His fingers stalled on the keyboard, momentarily at a loss for words.
Fitch''s fingertips paused on the address bar, "But some aspects of Maja''s past seem off, not matching
her own memories. And ording to the neighbors, she and Lillian would often leave the house when
her stepfather, Neil, was busy at work and couldn''t attend to family matters. I suspect that parts of
Maja''s childhood memories have been altered or perhaps there''s a year or two missing that she herself
hasn''t realized."
This could exin why Maja never sensed anything amiss about Lillian. Whenever Maja thought of her,
the most vivid memory was of Lillian''s protection and love, but the finer details eluded her.
She couldn''t recall how exactly she interacted with her grandparents, only that they disapproved of her
because she was a granddaughter.
Nor could she remember how her uncle had supported her mother, only a vague recollection of staying

"I''m certain that Maja is the lost daughter of the Sanders family, and Lillian is indeed her biological

many people involved. I couldn''t dig deeper. The lunatic only got a glimpse, but if you show Maja a
photo of Arlene, she''ll realize she''s the spitting image of Lillian. Moreover, a paternity test with Augus

Ian was wearing headphones, and so was Beck, seated behind him. Both headsets allowed them to
hear Fitch’s voice.
Beck had been stunned into silence from the start, and by the end, it felt like a lightning bolt had struck
his brain.
The affection he felt for Maja now made sense.

But Dn was out there, endangering his own sister over an impostor. How bitterly ironic was that?
Beck was burning up with urgency, almost wishing he could leap from the helicopter to stop Dn from

"There''s something fishy about Phelps. He had contacted Jolin before and must have known early on
that Maja was the Sanders family''s daughter. The fact that Augus asked him to investigate in
Greenfield was a misguided request. Phelps has been concealing the truth, and even stirred up trouble
with Maja''s oddball parents. That''s all his doing. Ian, this is all I''ve managed to find out. Lately, I''ve
been tailed, not sure if it''s by higher-ups or Phelps''s people. We''ll talkter."
"Thanks for your hard work, Fitch."
After hanging up, Fitch rubbed his temples. He hadn''t slept in days, his team working tirelessly through
the night on those records. Now, atst, he could get some rest.
Checking his phone, he saw several missed calls from Zoey.
His brow furrowed instantly. Did she think that sleeping together a few times made her special to him?
A flicker of disgust crossed his eyes as he promptly blocked the number.
He should keep her at a distance for a while longer, to avoid any further pretense of ying the role of
his wife.
Though he was partly to me for their entanglement, Zoey had been fully aware, yet had yed
along. It had started with her climbing into his bed, then exploiting his amnesia to leave her mark.
