Chapter 1377
Back when Ashlynn had not returned to the family, Meredith had brought joy to the Hiltons, so both
Beth and Marshall knew better than to neglect Meredith simply because of Ashlynn; however, they
were only human and could not help but favor their own daughter.
Ashlynn left after dinner, and Jeremy offered her a ride.
Beth and Marshall stood outside the door to see them off reluctantly, and Meredith saw every detail in
their expressions.
Meredith stayed the night with the Hiltons, and Aunt Cher brought her a ss of warm milk. “This will
help you sleep.”
Meredith was not at all in the mood and asked, “Don’t you think it’s weird for Uncle Marshall and Aunt
Beth to treat Ashlynn with such care? You mentioned that Ashlynnes here often, but why?”
“Probably to win Mr. and Mrs. Hilton over.”
“What a joke! Who does she think she is?” In Meredith’s perspective, Ashlynn was merely an outsider. ”
Uncle and Aunty must be out of their minds.”
“I think they see Ashlynn as their daughter. You saw them. That’s their intention. Every time Ashlynn
came here, they would order us to cook up a feast and prepare everything for Ashlynn. Both Mr. and
Mrs. Hilton woulde home to be with her, even Mr. Jeremyes home more often now!” Aunt
Cher said.
Meredith was confused as to how the Hiltons could be so smitten by a woman who grew up in a slum.
Beth was a proud woman who looked down on those of lower status, so she could not possibly take a
liking to Ashlynn. It would make even less sense if their actions were caused by Corentin.
Seeing how anxious Meredith seemed, Aunt Cher suggested, “Ms. Meredith, Mrs. Hilton isn’t your
actual mother, and your unstable bond with her can’t guarantee you anything…”
Meredith turned to look at her. “What do you mean?”
“Think of what happened during dinner After what Mr. Jeremy said, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton were clearly on
Ashlynn’s side and did not even try to defend you. They will soon want to give Ashlynn everything, so
you need to start fighting for what you want,” Aunt Cher reminded her.
Meredith instantly understood what she meant.
She knew just how powerful Beth was in the Hilton Family, so no one would ever object to whatever

If possible, old Mr. Hilton would even make Beth his heir because Beth was far too capable, and old Mr.
Hilton preferred to have an heir who could ensure the prosperity of the Hilton Family.
“You can’t be suggesting that Aunt Beth would allow Ashlynn ess to the Hiltons’ properties, can
you? That’s not possible! No matter how much they like Ashlynn, she still isn’t a member of our family”
“What I mean to say is that you can’t rely on what Mrs. Hilton feels for you! Even if Ashlynn isn’t a
concern, what about Jeremy? That’s her son by blood! The only male in the Hilton Family! Mrs. Hilton
lost her daughter, and she cares for you, but it’s a different story when ites to business!”
Meredith finally realized the severity of her situation and thought, That’s right! Why would she support
my im instead of helping her own son? She said that she won’t rely on her son, but what about now?
She is treating an outsider better than her own son.”
“Mrs. Hilton is a smart woman, and you have to see past the surface. You need to try and get her on
your
side so that you will be named heir to the Hilton Family. Once that is done, it doesn’t matter if she cares
for Ashlynn or Jeremy. None of that would matter to you anymore, and you won’t even have to worry
about Mrs. Hilton,” Aunt Cher said.
Meredith sat dazedly “You make it sound so simple. Corentin has called off our engagement, and
everyone isughing at me for it. Who would side with me?”
“Perhaps that’s why Mrs. Hilton lost confidence in you?” Aunt Cher said.
“But Corentin…”
“You might as well sleep with Mr. Lloyd once, and if he tries to abandon you after that, the Hiltons will
be the first ones to object to it.”
Meredith’s expression darkened.
“You can’t get too hung up on your pride now! What’s most important is to get what you want!” Aunt
Cher urged.
“You don’t understand…” Meredith was still traumatized by how Corentin came close to killing her.
“Ms. Meredith…”
“That’s enough. Let me think. You may go now!” Meredith said impatiently.
Aunt Cher left reluctantly.
Meredith’s heart sank at the thought that she might have to be intimate with a man as vicious and
ruthless as Corentin
