Then, Ellie looked at me, her face beaming. “Do you have an idea, Mae?”

    I was quiet.

I did have an idea, but this was something that even Brandon wouldn’t dare to risk. How could I do

    it?

It would be wonderful if the surgery seeded. But if it failed, Brandon being unable to forgive me

would be the least of our problems. He would die of misery.

“You don’t, do you?” Ellie Interpreted my silence as the absence of hope.

She turned her gaze downward, disappointment crossing her face. “Even Brandon doesn’t dare to

do it because of the dangers involved. I know that my condition isn’t something that people have a

    lot of faith.

    in.”

She sighed, looking up at me with a smile. She was no shapeshifter. She simply didn’t want her

    feelings to affect my mood.

“It’s okay, Mae. I’m happy now. I’ll just live until the day I die. Who knows, I might even make it

    hundredth birthday.”

The more she spoke, the more my heart ached for her.

    to

    my

How could I let such a beautiful girl lose hope? Iforted her, saying, “I have a friend who’s a

doctor. She studied abroad. Now, she’s an obstetrician and gynecologist. However, she has a lot of

friends in the medical field. She has cardiologist friends, too.”

“Really?” Ellie’s eyes lit up at once, shimmering with hope.

“Of course. I came here to have a look at your condition.” I might beforting her, but I was also

nting the possibility of surgery in her head.

Despite me understanding the risks involved, I felt unable to resist the eager anticipation in Ellie’s

    eyes.

Life wasn’t about a destination for her. She merely wanted to live a healthy life.

Although her life was a utopia to most and her yard looked straight from a fairytale, she yearned to

explore the world beyond those fences.

She probably wanted to climb mountains, swim in the ocean, ride bicycles, and run around freely.

She wanted to enjoy life with the people she loved.

But with her weak heart, she was unable to do it all. She had no choice but to be kept here, far

away from the city. She couldn’t even fall in love, marry, or have children.

It might appear to be freedom, but it was actually extreme loneliness.

How else would she have all that time to collect her own water? She was so lonely that it was the

only way she could spend her time.

“Really? Thank you, Mae.” She held up her teacup as a sign of her gratitude.

    *Really,” I assured her.

That single word of mine seemed to have illuminated her entire mind. She was beyond happy.

She sat with me in the yard, drinking tea. Then, she brought me into the house and into Brandon’s

room. You can stay in my brother’s room, Mae. Look at how neatly I kept it.”

It was certainly neat. There was a beautiful view of flowers right outside the window.

I put down my suitcase and looked at the way the room was decorated. There were a few

    photographs on the walls.

I had photographs at home, too. They were left behind by my parents. I didn’t think that there would

be photographs here. I walked over curiously.

“My brother says that these are photos of our parents when they were younger, but I don’t

    remember anything anymore,” Ellie exined.

These photos were taken with exactly the techniques as the ones that my parents had.

Brandon’s mother was holding a young child, and his father was holding an older child. I could tell at

once that the kids were Brandon and Ellie.

“Brandon said that our father left after this photo was taken.” Ellie’s words made me feel upset.

I didn’t want it to affect my mood, so I turned my attention to another photograph. It was of Brandon

carrying a girl. The photo was shot from the back.

“Is this you and your brother?” I asked Ellie.

Ellie smiled. “Of course not. That’s his…”

She paused. I saw her sticking out her tongue, as if realizing that she’d said something she

    shouldn’t have.

I wasn’t dumb. I smiled. “Was that his first love?”
