Bree’s words took me by surprise.

Bree shook her head. “Maddie, you don’t have to do this. If you feel awkward or uneasy, you could
transfer to the subsidiary or another department and keep your distance from him.”

explore other opportunities,” I asserted firmly.
Bree’s eyes were once again brimmed with tears. She shook her head and said, “Why did it have to
end like this?
“If you can’t be my daughter–inw, that’s one thing, but now, you won’t even stay with the
company. Maddie, are you nning to leave uspletely?”
Her distress weighed heavily on me. After all, we had developed a bond over the past decade that

“Bree, I promise I’ll visit you and Zack often,” I reassured her.
Upon hearing this, Bree wiped away her tears and asked, “Maddie, tell me. Did you already have a
new boyfriend?
“Did you make this decision because you’re worried he might have
reservations about your past with Chris?”
I couldn’t help butugh at her assumption. Brandon and I were just friends, yet everyone seemed
to think otherwise.
“Bree, I’m not currently dating anyone. And even if I were, he doesn’t have the right to dictate my
life. You’re overthinking it,” I rified.
“Then, promise me you won’t leave thepany, Maddie,” Bree urged.
She paused briefly before continuing, “At the very least, keep me informed of where to reach you. A
simple phone call when I want to see you.”

“Maddie, Zack ns to let Conrad grow independently by establishing apany for him. Would
you consider helping him?” Bree’s words were subtle, but I understood her implication.
This wasn’t merely about assisting Conrad. She was attempting to set me up with Conrad after
things didn’t work out with Chris.
