Skr suddenly grabbed Aiken’s arm tightly.

Aiken turned to look at her and asked, “Can you still hold on?”

These simple words answered the question that had been pressing at the bottom of Skr’s heart

since she stepped out of the elevator.

It was an answer she didn’t want to guess or admit.

Her eyes reddened as she looked at Aiken, unable to say a single word. She didn’t know how to

    ask.

The morgue was freezing. It was so cold that it made her shiver uncontrobly.

Aiken looked at her with sympathy. “Maybe you shouldn’t see this. I can exin what I know

    outside.”

He had seen Skrugh, being serious and confident when she was being professional, but he

had never seen her like this–so pale and afraid. He felt a sudden urge to protect her, thinking she

shouldn’t have to face this. It was too cruel for her.

“I need to see her. Maybe it’s not Grandma Vi,” Skr said firmly.

Although her eyes were red, there was no trace of hesitation in them.

Aiken looked at her deeply before nodding. “Alright, let’s go.”

A few minutester, Skr saw Vi.

She was lifeless. But her face looked peaceful as if she were merely asleep.

Skr looked for a long time, confirming what she was seeing. She looked closely at the mole near

the corner of the eye, another one near the ear, and the wrinkles around the eyes.

Vi had wrinkles, but her skin had always been smooth and fair.

Skr closed her eyes tightly, her chest aching unbearably.

“It’s… Grandma Vi,” she finally managed to say.

Aiken nodded and supported her. “Are you okay? Let’s talk outside.”

Skr’s eyes were bloodshot, but she held back her tears. She looked at Aiken and nodded.

    “Okay.”

The two of them walked out of the morgue and made their way to the hospital’s first floor.

They went out of the hospital, where sunlight fell on them, dispelling some of the chilliness.

Skr remained silent for a long time, and Aiken waited patiently.

“How did you find her? And how did this happen? She had always been healthy. I remembered that

she would only get a fever or a cold asionally and recover quickly,” Skr asked Aiken, her mind

filled with questions she couldn’t understand.

She couldn’tprehend why Vi would be gone just like that. She couldn’t ept it.

“ording to the investigation, Madam Vi lived abroad for a while. She just returned recently

and was found a few days ago on a park bench. She passed away in her sleep with no signs of

poisoning or illness. It was peaceful.

“As for why she didn’t contact you after returning, I still don’t know,” Aiken exined slowly.

Skr was stunned. “Grandma Vi went abroad?”

    2/2

“Yes, she lived abroad–for some time. I was able to find out when she left and returned, but I

couldn’t find out where exactly she stayed or why she went there,” Alken said honestly.

    Skr was bewildered.

Vi had never mentioned going abroad. She had once said she had no family left in the world, and

despite hearing about how beautiful foreign ces were, she had never expressed any desire to

    emigrate.

She had even said that unless there were something urgent, she would never leave the country. No

matter how lovely the scenery abroad, it couldn’tpare to the mountains and rivers here in the

    country.

So why had she gone abroad?

As Skr found herself feeling confused, Joe’s call came in.

The moment she answered, the tears she had been holding back finally poured down.
