The moment the clock ticked the turn of the millennia, the world changed. Instead of the computers crashing and causing a world apocalypse because of the now ridiculous Y2K bug, a gate spewing monsters appeared. They were weak and easily contained, but still a huge shock for humanity. Shortly after any immediate risks were addressed, more gates, including the planet gate that connects us to the rest of the universe, and the Admins appeared, and they explained how they had come to this planet to start the 50-year tutorial.
As the name implies, we were now slowly transitioning to a new world, learning all there is to know before hitting the main ''game''. The planet gradually became infested with monsters and the Admins helped us develop and trade with other planets while ensuring our survival.
A portion of the population awakened and we were told that the process of awakening will happen to everyone born after the first of January 2000 before the age of twenty. I was born on April 30th, 2028 and today is April 30th, 2048, so only two years left of the tutorial.
Everyone gets a skill when awakening. There are 6 known ranks used by the system, common, rare, epic, legendary, mythic, and unique. Unique doesn''t mean powerful, it means quite literally unique at least on the planet. Those are skills that only have one copy and can only be obtained as an innate skill. After the tutorial people will awaken with stats between 5 and 10 but the tutorial bonus assures an overall 10.
Now, back to my awakening, which, all things considered, is pretty exciting since, well, I got a unique skill! It even sounds strong! What does it do?

This affinity means you are just naturally suited for your new race, generally even more so than your original race! Also in the tutorial, there is a calming effect that the system uses to help. As you''ve mentioned, The skill is segmented and after the initial transformation, becomes a quest. It''s only after completing it that you will gain most if not all of your racial traits. Generally, said quest consists of simply accepting your new body and life, something that will come naturally in due time. Of course, exception happens but those are case per case and unpredictable.
Race-changing skills only occur during a planet tutorial to create new races on the planet, and since it gives the person a great amount of responsibility, the system balances things out with a good amount of power. Like you humans say, with great power comes great responsibilities"
