I didn’t have a response to her question because I had never really thought of it. Cole was a nice
guy and he cared about Cisco and me, truly so why hadn’t I given him a chance yet? What exactly
was I scared of?
‘It’s because we belong to only our mate’ Gia purred and I scrunched my face in disgust. Ever since
she started talking, she didn’t seem to have a filter for her actions anymore.
“Freeds, what are you thinking about?” Lyra asked and I blinked, shaking my head. “Nothing”
“So?” She persisted and I sighed, “I don’t have an answer to that question Lyra but I would say I’m
not ready?” I said, more like questioned and she smiled as though she understood. She did.
Was I not ready though? It had been years right? I could move on and Cisco would have a father if I
met the right man. In many ways, it was the fair thing to do.
However, in a way, my heart ached when I thought deeper about moving on and I had no idea why.
I looked at Cisco as he yed with his toys. He was so bubbly as he conversed with his army of
cars he called the transformers. God, I recall when we binge-watched the movie series at the
cinema when it premiered. He made me buy him every design bot that there was. He was such an
insistent kid so
much that I wondered whose nature it was. Mine or Kaiden’s.
Shaking my head at my thoughts, I smiled when Cisco looked at me. He smiled back and my smile
widened. It was filled with pride I couldn’t contain..
“He’s so cute,” Lyra said and I nodded
“I can see him having the girls in chokehold already” She added and I frowned, “Don’t say such
things about my son”
“Wanna bet?” She asked, smirking, “He’s got the looks Freeds. Just wait and see, when he gets to
thirteen, all’s done. You’re going to be a judge for the girls who’d be after your son”
“I don’t like that prediction, Lyra” I warned and she chuckled, raising her hands in surrender. “Okay,
ma’am”
Rolling my eyes at her antics, I asked, “Are you sleeping over?”
“Of course, where would you have me sleep tonight?” She asked back, smirking as she stretched
out her arms.
I didn’t mind her sleeping over, hell, she had a room here even though she would always want to
stay in my room. I was worried about Dad. There was no one at home with him…
“If you’re worried about Dad then rx, I called the caretaker beforeing over here. He’s in safe
hands, okay?” Great. It’s been established that without Lyra, my life would be a mess. Literally,
I smiled gratefully at her as my shoulders slumped in relief. “The thought of him being alone scares
me so much that I forget how efficient you always are sometimes”

She yfully nudged at me, “I understand and I feel the same way too. But don’t worry, the
caretaker knows just how to take care of Dad”
“Thanks,”
“Yeah, you’re wee. Can we make dinner now? I’m hungry” Her cheery expression turned into a
grumpy one in an instant. and I let out a loudughter that made Cisco look at me quickly.
“Woah, he’s like your very own mini bodyguard, that’s so adorable” Lyramented, getting up and
pulling me along.
“What can I say, he loves me” Weughed as we headed to the kitchen.
“So what about you?” I teasingly asked once we were in the kitchen and she stared at me with her
brows furrowed, confusion evident on her face. “Do you have anyone on your mind to be your
mate?” I asked hoping for a positive response even though I was fairly sure she had no one. If she
did, I would have known.
Ever since I returned, I would stare at her and wonder why she wasn’t involved with anyone yet.
Lyra was so pretty and smart. She was the whole package and I bet guys were all over so why was
she not taken?
My thoughts were irrational, I agree but it felt like the best for her.
“No, I don’t” Just as I expected. A negative response but I was intrigued. Why?
“Seriously? Why? You’re so pretty. I know you have lots of guys

swooning over you” I said with a wink but instead of a smile or blush, she held a serious expression
as she shunned my question.
Feeling my questioning gaze, she muttered, “That doesn’t matter”
I chuckled softly, “What does?”
We paid more attention to making dinner now.
She responded to my question after she was done chopping the carrots, “I don’t want to get
invested in a man who would turn out to be someone else’s mate” Her words struck a cord in my
chest. I was reminded of Safiya and it left a fair amount of pain. “That’s why. I want to be on the
winning side at the end of everything between the man and me. The only way that can be achieved
is if he’s my mate. Only mine”
She added and I smiled. She spoke so passionately about love. in her life and I knew she’d be a
passionate lover. I hoped her mate woulde soon. I just know I would be punching whoever it
turned out to be for making my best friend wait for so long.
“That makes sense,” I told her and we continued in silence. My mind wandered to her statement
about loving someone else’s mate. Safiya fell for my mate. She loved him. What if she didn’t love
him so much, would things have been different today? Would we have been closer like before?
Would Kaiden and I have been together and happy? The probability of that happening was almost
at a hundred percent.
I sighed, but that didn’t happen and here I was, alone and without a mate. What a gamble!
