    FREDA WHITLOCK


    I had no idea how many seconds passed between us but I stood frozen unable to react while she


    kept smiling.


    “What?” I voiced out when she turned to leave. I hoped that I was the one who misunderstood her


    statement. Maybe she said. something else and I misheard?


    “Yes, Mrs. Whitlock?” She called, turning back with a chaste smile on her face. The smile suddenly


    annoyed me, how could she still be all smiles after dropping that bombshell?


    And for goddess’s sake, it was Ms. Whitlock and not whatever she kept saying.


    “Is it necessary?” My voice came out h**e, barely above a whisper due to my parched throat. She


    looked cluelessly at me as if she hadn’t gotten my question. “Is it necessary that Cisco’s father


    come as well?”


    She gave me a look that made me uneasy. She seemed to have questions swirling in her head as


    to why I was asking such a question. It made me angry but I couldn’t react. People were bound to


    feel the same way she did, I just had to get used to it as time went by


    “It is. The children must be here with both parents else they will be disqualified and sent home” She

    What type of absurd requirement was that? Moon goddess, what sort of conspiracy was this?


    “Oh! And the best student would be awarded greatly. I expect to see Francisco present ma’am” She


    added and tapped my shoulder lightly before walking away. My eyes were on her figure as she left


    and when she was gone, they turned misty. Today was going great. Everything was fine so why did

    “How was your day, sweetheart?” I asked, crouching to his level to engulf him in a big hug. For a


    moment, while he was in my arms, I forgot about everything I had been worried about.


    “I had lots of fun today” He beamed and I tapped his nose

    “Shall we?” He nodded and we began heading toward the car.


    “Mom?” He called as we got to where my car was parked. I hummed with a nod, urging him to


    speak.


    “The teacher said there’s going to be a party and I am invited because…” He paused as though


    searching for the right word to say, “Because I’m smart” He said with a smile so wide that I pouted


    at how cute he looked.


    “You’re smart indeed and yes hunny I know about the party,” I said, pulling his cheeks, and his


    giggles rented the air. I led him to the passenger seat and opened the door for him but he didn’t get


    in immediately as he turned to me swiftly.


    “Mom, she said we should bring our dads with us. We’re bringing a dad right?” He blinked with


    innocence as he spoke. While it was a mere question to him, it sent my mind reeling with many


    thoughts. When I looked down at him again, I gulped down nothing. His hopeful eyes wererge


    and round as they gazed up at me.


    My heart began to race as I thought of the right words to say in response to his question. He said, a


    dad. How do I tell him that, a dad was not an item but a person? His other parent. How do I tell him


    that he had a father but he was not with him? He had another family.


    “How about we go home and guess what I made? Your favorite meal!” My voice was shaky as I


    brushed his question off. His eyes shed with excitement and he pped gleefully, hopping into


    the passenger’s seat and I closed the door.

    The thud from the door shutting made me s**p. I was scared now. How would he feel when I told


    him he wasn’t going to be apanied by his father? Would I do that to him? He could get


    disqualified.


    Oh moon goddess please, spare me already.


    When I got into the driver’s seat, I yed his favorite tracks and got ready to drive. My hands were


    shaky on the steering wheel. I took deep breaths to calm myself while slowly bobbing my head to


    the tunes booming in the car. He looked excited, and I knew it had something to do with the party.


    Would I break such hopes?


    I couldn’t even if I wanted to. But then, I would never call Kaiden for his help. However, I was in a


    fix. There was no other option for me than getting Kaiden toe to this event and leaving our lives


    for good. Now, the problem was how willing was Kaiden to do this one thing for me without wanting


    something in return. I knew he would want Cisco but what about me?


    I finally started the car and drove it out of the school. As I drove, I would smile at Fransisco as he


    had his fun listening to the


    tunes.


    How many more times would he ask about his father and for how long would I keep brushing him


    off? He was growing up and the more he hung out with friends, the more he learned about having a


    father. Now, this g**d-d**d school insisted on this throwing me off my feet.
