    Chapter 192 The second story

    CASSANDRA

At the mention of my family name, I clenched my palms around the arms of my chair until it hurt.

    Felix.

My heart sank when I heard my true surname. My mind immediately flew to my father and brother, and

as their images shed through my memory, sorrow bloomed within me. I missed them more and more

with each passing day, and the heartache haunted me in my dreams.

But despite the fear that gued me in anticipation, I managed to stay calm. Luckily for me, Kaleb

didn’t seem to notice my stiffness and the king of Yurene carried on in a disgustingly light tone.

“Well, in case you didn’t know much about the so–called loyal warrior family, I’ll tell you a little bit about

them,” he began, and then he let out a small sigh. “The Felixes were rather famous for their loyalty to

the King of Wega as well as their capability. It was said that the leader of the Felix n was

considered a ‘god of war” and the watchdog of Wega’s royal power. From what I’ve heard about

Darrin and Ector Felix, they were quite strong.”

I remained silent when Kaleb was introducing this backstory I wanted to stop him but I couldn’t because

I was afraid that if I opened my mouth, screaming and shrieking wou d tumble out. I

I wasn’t certain if the arrogant Northern king knew my true identity, but I assumed by his expression

that he didn’t. The identities of my father and brother were spoken about too lightly to suggest he knew

the truth, On the one hand, I hated it, but on the other, I realized it was the first time I’d heard my father

and brother’s names after all of these years.

Asher and Erika did their best to avoid talking about anything rting to my past.

The way Kaleb described them was like he was talking about some heroic models, which was

surprising. given their shift in reputation post–usation.

But then, a momentter, Kalebmented on the usation, and I fought to not release a sigh.

“Do you believe that the Felixes wanted to kill the Betas?” he asked, and I was a little confused. Why

would he ask a in healer from a small Pack on the border what I thought when I was so far from the

    core of this incident?

Or at least Cassandra Keller was, of course.

“I don’t know much about it,” I replied, and I shrugged for good measure.

The king raised an eyebrow in surprise. “I figured it would have been breaking news back then. Even

the residents of Yurene were discussing it at length.”

mean, I’d heard about it vaguely, but I didn’t know much of the details,” I tried to exin, and I made

sure to keep my expression even.

Kaleb seemed satisfied by that answer and nodded his head thoughtfully. He ran a hand through his

long golden–brown hair and then returned his attention to me.

*1 could understand that,” he remarked. “Wega seems to have buried this and prevented their

citizens from speaking about it ever since the conviction was settled. But do you truly believe that

Darrin Felix, the loyal man that he was, betrayed his country and the ruler he pledged his loyalty to?”

My voice caught in my throat as I fought to find an answer he would ept.

Why indeed would anyone doubt my father, who had devoted his entire life to the crown?

Finally, I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

Kaleb’s eyes narrowed and he released a sigh.

“But you did know,” he used. “Everyone in Wega would have known, even Wild Crawler. It was a

political game, obviously, but no one dared to question it. They all epted what they had been told. I

feel. deeply sorry for the Felixes. They were wrongfully used and punished for no reason.

I didn’t want to continue this topic. It was too hard to hear about my family members, even if the

Northern king seemed to regard them highly. I didn’t understand Kaleb’s angle and what he was trying

    to get at..

So, I remained silent and let him continue.

“It will always be like this,” he remarked thoughtfully, his tone underscored with a little irritation. “At the

height of one’s power, they seem to get all of the good things, but when the power disappears…

nothing is left and nobody is on their side.”

As much as I didn’t want to admit it, Kaleb’s words were hurtfully true. I remembered back in those

days, after the usation that tore my family apart, everyone shifted their opinions. My family had once

been so revered, but the moment they were used, it was as if we were nothing.

“I don’t understand why you’re telling me this,” I said with a slight sigh of my own: “I’m not interested in

    politics.”

Kaleb smiled. “Everyone is involved in politics, Cassandra, either consciously or subconsciously. Don’t

you wonder about the truth behind the incident?”

“Do you?” I questioned, even though my breath wavered. “Or do you already know the truth?”

“Not the whole picture, but I know some interesting parts,” he remarked. “Interesting enough for you to

decide if the great Alpha King of Wega is worth being so loyal to. The game, which everyone

believed to be between the Beta and the Felixes was actually directed by the former Alpha King. He

was the master of the puppets, and of course, it was his will to wipe out the warrior family. The Beta,

fully submitting to his Alpha, was used as a pawn.”

I frowned, but when I heard what Kaleb said, I wasn’t as shocked as I thought I would be. It could very

    well

    Chapter 192 The second story

be a lie, as Asher had mentioned that Kaleb had been visiting Oliver Moses for a couple of days

    recently.

But I had my doubts about the matter.

Kaleb might not believe what Oliver most likely told him during their visits to clear himself of guilt, but

he surely thought it was a good enough story to coax an innocent healer like me.

It could be real. After all, my family had been convicted by the blind emperor. But I couldn’t think about

that, not now. This story was a distraction that was meant to shift me to Kaleb’s side of this dispute.

“I don’t find this interesting at all,” I remarked with a bored inflection.

“You don’t?” Kaleb questioned, and he seemed rather amused. His deep blue eyes narrowed, and then

he grinned. “Well, Cassandra, what if I told you the Alpha King of Wega wanted Darrin Felix to die

because he found out that he was obsessed with sorcery? Or more precisely, that the Alpha King

wanted to use sorcery to be immortal?”

“What?” I blurted out before I could stop myself and my eyes widened. Quickly, I felt dazed. My vision

was blurred and the image of Kaleb started to twist. I felt woozy and off–kilter, and I tried to push aside

the feeling. but it was no use.

A wicked smile appeared on the Northern king’s face, and before I lost consciousness and fell into

oblivion, I heard him utter something, but I couldn’t make sense of it.
