    Chapter 127

Howard handed the smartphone to her with a casual flick of his wrist and said, “See it.”

Gwendolyn tapped the screen awake, navigated to the settings, and found the emergency contacts list.

    It was nk.

Her fingers caressed the edge of the phone as she mustered the courage to look up at him and ask,

“Mr. Chadwick, could I be your emergency contact?”

Howard set aside the tablet he’d been reading from, took the phone, and punched in her number

    without a second thought.

A smile crept onto Gwendolyn, unbidden.

“Happy now?” He raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smirk ying around the corners of his eyes.

She nodded, eyes lingering on him..

“I’ve got a lot on my te these days. Cliff will drive you home from work. Someone with your skills

shouldn’t have to grind through the ranks at the hospital,” he said, as though he thought the ce

    beneath her.

The hospital was a jungle. With her gentle nature, she was bound to get the short end of the stick.

Warmth flooded Gwendolyn, touched by his concern.

“Mr. Chadwick, I’m working toward my medical license. Just one more year of residency and I’ll have it.

Dr. Yates supervises my consultations, which wouldn’t break any rules.”

She yearned to stand on her own two feet.

Howard regarded her with a deep look.

Truth be told, if Enoch just acknowledged her, none of that licensing would matter. The apprenticeship

route was still recognized, and she’d been by Enoch’s side since she could walk. She was more than

    qualified.

So, she was ready to fly solo, really.

The car veered in the opposite direction of her expectations.

As unfamiliar street signs slid past the window, she asked, “Mr. Chadwick, where are we going?”

“We’re diving into high society tonight to see if it’s anything like those TV dramas you love,” he said.

It took her by surprise that he remembered her offhandments.

    12.47

Dressed in her simple jeans and blouse, she felt out of ce. She wondered if she would embarrass

him. But her worries evaporated when they arrived at Bayridge City’s most famous revolving

restaurant, which was closed off for a private event.

The top–floor dining room was quiet, save for a few select waiters. The dim, romantic. lighting and

opulent decor set the scene. Through the expansive ss walls, Bayridge City’s glittering nightscape

unfolded, crowned by the newly risen moon.

The restaurant made one full rotation per hour, offering a 360–degree view of Bayridge City’s skyline.

A long table was set. Candlelight flickered. The table was adorned with exquisite floral arrangements

with the stuff of fairy tales.

Gwendolyn recognized this from whispers and movies. There was the legendary candlelit dinner,

    complete with a violin serenade.

    Têxt belongs to N?velDrama.Org.

*Does it match what you’ve seen on screen?” Howard’s voice was soft, his presence

    anchored even in his wheelchair.

    She nodded, “It does.”

But the scenes from the dramas paled inparison to the reality of tonight.

The waiter served their meal with a silent grace, poured the wine, and retreated.

“Mr. Chadwick, is tonight a special asion?” asked Gwendolyn.

“The Summit Corp building had its grand opening today. I just wanted to celebrate with you,” he said

intently, his gaze locked on hers.

Her heart raced, emotions swelling beyond her control.

Howard sliced into his steak with elegance, his hands exuding an air of aristocracy.

He offered his te to Gwendolyn, “I know you don’t like it rare, so I ordered yours

    well–done.”

Gwendolyn bit her lip, “Isn’t eating a steak well–done kind of unsophisticated?”

Howard chuckled, eyes downcast, “Who’s to say? Gwendolyn, being yourself is enough.”

With her eyes fixed on him, she felt a warmth in her chest that threatened to overflow. She lifted the

wine ss and took a generous sip to hide her fluttering heart.

But the more she drank, the drier her throat became.

A voice inside told her she was falling hard. Yet a sour note of doubt crept in. Could she. really have a

    man like this?
