Chapter 147

    Chapter 147

“The head of the design department told me that they have a new colleague named Avery Rumpley,

who just so happened to be a local of the small developing town. I wanted her to join the meeting so

that we could pick her brain, but it turned out that she didn''te to work.” One of the executives

    observed Cayden''s reaction after reporting.

He was surprised when the man smiled slightly instead of getting upset.

The expression did notst long, though.

The executive had worked at Trident Group for many years, but that was his first time seeing Cayden

smile. Why would he smile when one of his employees is absent for no reason?

Cayden''s sharp gaze thennded on the sketch of the town''s design.

He was not surprised that Avery did note to work.

Meanwhile, at the subway station, Avery had already purchased tickets.

Not too far away from Avery were Lindsay and the children, waiting for their ride to arrive.

With a deadpan expression, Avery remembered how Lindsay followed Xavier to the top floor back at

thepany. She could only watch at the lobby since she dared not go up there herself.

Without authorization, no regr employees were allowed to go up to the floor where Cayden''s office

    resided.

While Avery waited for Lindsay toe back down, questions began to pop up in her head. Lindsay

knows Cayden? What sort of rtionship do they have?

Recalling the distant past, Avery remembered that Lindsay was the Moores'' housekeeper and was in

charge of almost everything rted to the household.

Ever since Avery saw the bald, middle-aged businessman on the television behind Nina before she

went overseas, she refused to think about the past for fear of remembering the disgusting experience

she had had to endure that fateful night five years ago.

However, after seeing Lindsay go to Trident Group to meet Cayden, Avery had no choice but to dig into

    the past.

Night after night, her employer would force himself on her. As he rammed her forcefully, his intoxicating

    cologne would fill her nostrils.

Every detail told Avery that the man was Cayden, but she had no idea back then.

When Lindsay came back down with Zachary and Rory in tow, Avery froze like a statue.

The kids just called Lindsay Mrs. Hayward. For a reason Avery was unaware of, the five-year-olds

    seemed very close with Lindsay.

Avery could not help but wonder if she was the mother of the children but then remembered Lindsay

telling her that she had given birth to a girl, not twins.

Standing behind Lindsay and the kids, Avery spent quite a while trying to answer burning questions in

her mind. Did Lindsay purposely lie to me? Was she trying to hide the twins from me by telling me that I

only gave birth to a girl?

Even if Avery could remember the size of her belly, herck of experience made it impossible for her to

know if she had conceived twins.

After all, she was only eighteen then.

Moreover, Avery did not think what the doctors told her about her pregnancy was trustworthy either

since they had to follow their employer''s orders, which raised another question. If their employer was

also Cayden, what''s his reason for hiding the truth?

Back then, Avery was requested to be blindfolded and stripped naked, so even though she was as

close as she could be to her employer, she could not see his face.

On the other hand, the man knew exactly what her face and body were like.

The more Avery thought about it, the more unsure she was whether her employer was Cayden.

When the subway finally arrived, Lindsay led the children inside.

Avery, who regained her senses shortly after, quickly grabbed herptop and followed the trio.

After the subway started moving, Avery squeezed her way through the crowd and saw a young man

give up his seat for Lindsay.

“There are so many people here,”mented Zachary while looking around.

Avery made sure the boy could not see her.

“Zach, maybe you should be a subway operator when you grow up. That way, I can ride it every single

day!” suggested Rory in all seriousness.

Amused, Lindsay smiled warmly at the children.

The number of people on the subway slowly decreased as they passed through different stations.

While entertaining the kids, Lindsay would look around from time to time to ensure that no danger

    woulde to them.

After all, Zachary and Rory were no ordinary kids. Bringing the children of Trident Group''s CEO out

was risky business if nothing else.

Lindsay dared not let her guard down. The fact that Mr. Moore just allowed his children to take the

subway is almost unbelievable. If Old Mr. Moore were to hear about this, he would undoubtedly give

Mr. Moore a piece of his mind.

Since the crowd was getting thinner, Avery decided to move to another car, where she could still steal

nces at Lindsay, Zachary, and Rory from time to time.

When there were many passengers around, Zachary and Rory did as their father instructed and stood

still, fearing they would cause Lindsay trouble.

However, when only a handful of passengers were left, the children began to y around.

Lindsay lived in a remote area, so few passengers were bound for the same destination.

“This entire car is mine now!” dered Zachary in the middle of the almost empty car.

“No, it''s mine! You''re supposed to be driving it, Zach. I''m the passenger,” protested Rory with a pout.

“Oh, how I wish Daddy would get us a subway car of our own.”

“That''s not how it works. You can''t...” Zachary was in the middle of his sentence when he suddenly

noticed someone familiar in the other car. “Ms. Ery?” The boy managed to recognize Avery from her

    silhouette alone.

When Rory heard her brother, she quickly followed his gaze.

At that moment, the subway had reached another station and was only a station away from Lindsay''s

    home.

Avery immediately stood up when she noticed Zacharying toward her. After meeting the boy''s

gaze, the woman looked at the consternated Lindsay.

From Lindsay''s expression, Avery could tell that the woman recognized her.

“Get back here, you two!” As if Avery would steal the children away, Lindsay hurriedly pulled the

    children back to her.

“What are you doing here, Ms. Ery?” Zachary ignored Lindsay''s effort to keep him away from Avery and

    talked to the woman anyway.

“I''m on my way to work,” exined Avery at the door before ncing at Lindsay again.

“Hi,” greeted Avery when her eyes and Lindsay''s locked.

However, Lindsay did not respond. She simply knitted her eyebrows, wondering how Zachary and Rory

knew the woman. Do the kids know that she''s their mother? Does Mr. Moore know that they''ve met the

    woman?

When the subway reached the next station, Avery smiled at the children before getting off.

    ? 2024 N?v/el/Dram/a.Org.

Zachary and Rory called out to Avery, intending to follow the woman, but Lindsay held them back until

    the doors closed.

After the subway left, Avery sat on a bench and spent quite a long time there trying to rpose

herself but to no avail. How would I have been able to give birth to two healthy children if Cayden was

my stepbrother? That''s impossible. Then how do I make sense of it all? Were Zach and Rory born to

    another woman?

Shaking her head, Avery preferred to think that Allie had lied to her about Cayden being her

    stepbrother.

The children were given names that mirrored mine! That can''t be a coincidence. Their father must''ve

come up with those names for a reason. With that thought in mind, Avery rushed back onto the

subway, intending to return to the office to question Cayden.
