Chapter 2281
After leaving Pearl River Point, Charlie rushed to the wet market.
He had spent too much time dealing with Wendy''s matter. If he didn''t hurry to buy the food back to
cook, ire would not be able to eat lunch when she got home from work.
Although Aurous Hill was an ancient city, it was getting more and more modernized nowadays. Most
o f the old buildings were either destroyed, demolished, or renovated to suit the modernization of
the city.
They had basically turned into skyscrapers and high-rise buildings of the modern metropolitan city.
Many traditional craft stores and markets were gradually being reced by a variety of luxurious
shop lots as well as integrated supermarkets.
In the early years, there were a lot of roadside barbers who had excellent skills in haircutting and
shaving. A simple haircut or shave was only about two to three dors. 8
However, these ancient and old-schooled barbers had long since disappeared and were now
reced by the dazzling and high-end hair salons. The standard price for a simple haircut from the
mediocre at best or even unskilled hairdressers was a couple of hundred
dors and above. Some of these salons would even beckon the customers to apply for a
membership, and eventually, a simple haircut would end up costing a few thousand dors. These
kinds of shops were rife i n the city. 5
In the past, many roadside wagons and carts would sell fresh vegetables. The vendors were the
countryside farmers who picked their own vegetables from their farm in the morning and then drove
the wagon to the city to sell. Their vegetables and fruits were both fresh and cheap. 5
Regretfully, over the years, these self-operated vendors were not allowed to operate in the city.
Even the traditional wet markets were dwindling, so most people could only go to the supermarket
to buy vegetables. 4
The quality of the vegetables in the supermarket was not very good, yet the price was surprisingly
expensive. A pack of lettuce could fetch more than ten dors per pack.
This also made the ancient city gradually lose its traditional atmospheric livelihood.
In truth, Charlie did not like going to the supermarket t o buy food. He felt a sense of dullness
whenever he visited the supermarket, so he often went to the protected residential area in the old
town district where there was a very lively vegetable market. 2

The reason why he liked to go to the old residential area was not only because it was bustling and
spirited, but there was another reason hidden in Charlie''s heart that he had never told anyone. 2
In the past, when he and his parents had first arrived i n Aurous Hill, his parents had liked the
vibrant and unique characteristics of the old town district of Aurous Hill.
There were a lot of old buildings left over from the medieval dynasties in which the architecture style
was very different from the north. His parents had adored them very much.
Because of their love of traditional culture and relics, his parents had then rented an old residence
in the old town district. After his father had renovated and refurbished the house, they had lived a
comfortable life there. 5
Later, when his parents had passed away and Charlie had been sent to the orphanage, he would
often sneak out to the old town district with his buddies, Harvey and Stephanie.
Back then, Harvey and Stephanie had thought that Charlie sneaked out because he was yful and
wanted to have fun, but the fact was that Charlie was there to reminisce about his parents and their
lives there.
After his parents had passed away, the residence had been rented out for some years, changing
one group of tenants after another.
Later, a real estate investor had bought the residence i n hopes of demolition and appreciation.
Later on, the residence and the nearby old buildings were ssified as a historical building
protection zone. Due to this, demolition and renovation were strictly prohibited, so the residence
had been vacant for a long time.
Charlie had quietly inquired about the current owner. I t was said that the investor who had bought
the residence was the initiator of a property spection group in Lancaster. Although the residence
could not generate any revenue for him, he didn''t mind the money spent on the residence, hence he
had left the house as it was.
Later, the owner had been suspected of illegal fundraising in other provinces and was charged with
several crimes, so the residence had been seized by the court.
Two-something years ago, rumor had it that the residence would be auctioned out, but because the
owner had been involved in quite serious charges, it had not been closed over thest two years, so
the house had not entered the foreclosure process.
The wet market that Charlie wanted to buy food at was not far from the old residence, so he
nned to make a detour to take a look at the house.
As Charlie was on the way to the residence via his electric bike, a Rolls-Royce had already stopped
in front of the shabby residence.
An elderly man stepped out from the front passenger seat. He was Uncle Walters, the butler of the
Dunn family in Aurous Hill.
