As he spoke, he reached into the box he’d brought along and pulled out a brand–new bedsidemp.
Then, with deft movements, he disassembled it into itsponent parts.
The deskmp wasn’t particrlyrge, but its frame’s weight was substantial. Adrian, holding it along
with the numerous bags of purchases from the supermarket, had been standing there for quite a while.
It was indeed no easy feat.
Lysander had a moment of hesitation, but in the end, she steeled herself and did not help him bedroom

Adrian was a man of refined manners. He wouldn’t enter her bedroom without her permission, even if
the door was left slightly ajar. He sought her consent, saying, “I can help you change it. It will be quick.”
Lysander rose and moved to the bedroom doorway. Looking at Adrian’s hand, she said, “You’re a
doctor, and your hands are invaluable. I can’t bear it if they were to get injured.
Adrian was somewhat taken aback. “What about yourmp, then?”
“Thatmp has been in use for quite some time. I’ll just have the property management take it down
and then purchase a new one,” Lysander suggested, her voice casual yet her gaze unwavering as she
looked at him.
Adrian slowly put down thempstand and began to repack the toolbox he had previously opened. He
admitted, somewhat helplessly, “You’re right. If it broken, we can just buy a new one.”
He knew Lysander was intelligent, and sooner orter, she would realize that his so–called errands and
lamp repairs were merely excuses to see her. But he didn’t expect that moment toe so swiftly.
He had only been back in the country for two days.
With a glimmer of hope, Adrian looked toward Lysander. Her impassive response gave him his answer.
A wave of guilt surged within him, prompting him to take the initiative to apologize. “I’m sorry for
causing you trouble again tonight.”
“You don’t need to apologize, but… Lysander paused for a moment then added deliberately. “Goodbye,
drive safely.
She didn’t attempt to retain Adrian. Instead, she subtly showed him the door. Even her reminders were
by the book, not giving him a shred of undeserved hope.
Adrian’s heart dropped. “All right.”
White Coat had been patiently waiting for him to take it for a walk. Seeing him about to leave after such
a brief stay, it dashed over and bit onto the hem of his trousers, continuously whimpering in protest.
Lysander whispered, “White Coal, let g
go.”
Reluctantly, White Coat heeded her words and began to circle around Adrian again. He was wary of
stepping on such a tiny puppy and found himself in a predicament, hesitant to take any steps at all.

Adrian had taken care of White Coat for such a long time, so how could he bear to see it in such a
distressed state? However, to avoid putting Lysander in a difficult position, he steeled his heart and
locked it up in the cage.
He had brought this cage originally, intending to use it when taking his pet to the vet for vinations.
He hadn’t expected it toe in handy so soon.
“All done.” Adrian feigned nonchnce as he spoke to Lysander. “I’ll be on my way.”
Lysander bade him farewell. “Goodbye.”
No matter how upset Adrian was, he still felt a pang of reluctance. As he stepped out the door, he
couldn’t help but add a reminder. “The weather forecast said there might be a thunderstorm tonight.
Make sure you close the windows before you sleep.”
“Okay.” Lysander replied sinctly, not wanting to utter a single unnecessary word.
The door closed with a soft click.
After a full day of hustle and bustle, Lysander was truly exhausted. After taking a hot bath, she quickly
changed into her pajamas and retired to her bedroom for a much–needed rest.
She wasn’t sure how long she had been asleep when the subtle rustling noises from the living room
forced her to lift her heavy eyelids.
Outside the window, the world was still cloaked in an inky darkness, illuminated only by the scattered,
dimly lit streetmps. Clearly, it was still the middle of the night.
It seemed like White Coat was causing a fuss again.
The little pup was naturally lively and energetic since birth. Lately, there were signs of it developing a
knack for wreaking havoc around the house. On several recent asions, she had found the rascal
gnawing on the legs of the couch.
Lysander was dead tired. If it had to chew, then so be it. After all, owning a dog meant having to
sacrifice some furniture.
She lifted the nket over her ears, intending to continue sleeping-
But the very next moment, something seemed off about the sounds emanating from the living room.
Amidst the soft rustling noises, footsteps could be heard. This was definitely not a sound that a small
dog could produce. It was a person!
Lysander was jolted awake, all traces of drowsiness gone in an instant. Her first instinct was to reach
for the switch by her bed. However, despite a faint click, the room remained shrouded in darkness.
Indeed, the light over here had been broken for a while, and she had just turned down Adrian’s offer to
fix it earlier that evening.

The timing of this event couldn’t have been more perfect.
The bedroom was shrouded in darkness. She reached out to the side of her pillow and suddenly
remembered. My phone! She had left it on the coffee table in the living room the previous night and had
forgotten to bring it in.

Outside, the sound of footsteps had faded away, reced by the frantic noise of someone rummaging
through things.
Gr…
It was White Coat!
It seemed to have sensed the presence of a stranger in the house, beginning to emit a low warning
sound.
But in the next moment, the low hum of the warning signal morphed into a high–pitched, piercing
shrick.
It seemed as though it had been kicked and was in pain. The puppy’s cries were sharp and shrill,
causing a sudden pang in Lysander’s heart.
Lysander waited for a few seconds, yet the terrified cries from White Coat escted, gradually
morphing into mournful wails.
Lysander could wait no longer. Barefoot, she stepped onto the cold floor, gently and carefully pulling
the bedroom door open just a crack.
Just at that moment, a bolt of lightning streaked across the sky, briefly illuminating the scene in the
living
room.
The person who arrived was unmistakably a tall, grown man.
This might have been a burr breaking into the house!
A pang of dread seeped into Lysander’s heart as she bravely reached out for thempstand to her
side. When Adrian left, he only took his toolbox with him, leaving behind the deskmp he had brought.
Moreover, he didn’t bother to reassemble the parts he had dismantled from themp.
The heaviest base was still lying on the ground.
Lysander carefully picked up the base, holding her breath and focusing intensely as she slowly
approached. the man with his back toward her.
The man had turned the living room into aplete mess in his search, yet he hadn’t found anything of
value. In his growing frustration, he failed to notice the subtle sounds of movement that were mingled
with the noise he was making.
Lysander lifted the base high up, and then forcefully smashed it down.
Apanied by a heart–wrenching scream, the man clutched his head and fell to the side.
In the darkness, thin lines of blood trickled down between his fingers.
Despite Lysander’s best effort to knock him out, the man merely staggered a few steps, falling against
a cab to one side. He was soon struggling to stand up again.
The thunderstorm forecasted in the weather report had arrived, with continuous rumbling sounds.

Lysander was well–acquainted with the room’syout. To escape, she would have to pass by the man.
Essentially, she was trapped with no way out.
And so, with a firm resolve, she lifted the base once more and brought it crashing down again.
I rather get sued over dying! At this point, it’s all or nothing!
Lysander’s second attempt failed tond. The man, enduring the pain, rafsed his hand to block it,
sessfully catching the edge of the base. His strength was far greater than hers, and this single
instance led her to a sorrowful realization.
In a situation where there was such a significant disparity in strength, she was able tounch a surprise
attack initially. However, once the man was on guard, she could no longer gain the upper hand.
Lysander hastily grabbed everything within her reach, hurling them toward the man. She was
attempting to buy some time, hoping to make her escape. All the while, she was shouting at the top of
her lungs, “Help! Someone save me!”
