    Just then, Skr stepped outside. Skr was surprised to see Vera as she was about to leave.

    As Joe took the bags from her, it dawned on her that he had already returned. “You’re back.”


    Joe replied, “Yeah, I got home about an hour ago.”


    “Oh… have you eaten?” Skr asked, unsure of what else to say, her tone polite.


    After their trip to the courthouse, their dynamic seemed to have reverted to that initial sense of distance.


    Joe looked at her and said, “I haven’t. Can you make something for me?”


    Skr couldn’t quite ce it, but Joe seemed a bit pitiful.


    Skr thought, “Could the CEO of the Martin Group really feel slighted just because he hadn’t had dinner?” Skr shook her head, dismissing the thought as her imagination ran wild.
