    “We lost him!” Castar bellowed.

    Dripping with blood, Sophie’s hand lay motionless on the side of a chair. Darcy Bruston was preparing to hammer a sixth nail into the other hand.


    “Please, no more, no more!” she said.


    “Where have they gone?” asked Darcy.


    “No more, no more!” she slurred.


    “Where have they gone?” he shouted.


    She concealed her disfigured face.


    “Fetch me the Truethanol,” he commanded.


    Sophie closed her eyes.


    There was nothing more she could do.
