    11 am, July 26th – King Michael’s private hospital, 5-9 Bedlar St, London


    Two weeks later, Finch’s expression bore the lines and weariness of having aged a decade. He was lying on the ground by a side street, the clamour of King Michael’s Hospital sirens still echoing in his ears. Unseen, he blended into his surroundings. His eyes had become feverish and over-bright.


    He attempted to explain his travels to a passerby, but he jeered and laughed. Others nodded in agreement, but their hearts weren’t in it.

    He sat up to look at the hospital entrance. There was a change that day. The small crowds that had been taking vigil outside of King Michael’s grew in size. Finch’s eyes widened. “Mum!” she must be getting better! He stood up. Indeed, a press junket had parked outside the hospital doors. Finch’s gaze flitted between the reporters, the fans, and the hospital doors.


    At last, the Kinslows emerged, and his mother in a stretcher.


    Finch crossed the barricade, resolute he walked towards his mother, who lay motionless.


    “Mum!” he shouted “Mum! Papa!”


    The crowd burst out laughing. Bodyguards tackled Finch, and more police joined them.
