    Larissa made a call to Bethany’s mother. Regardless of the oue, she had to let Bethany’s mother

    The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered.

    Larissa tucked Aster into bed and stayed up all night toplete most of her work for the next


    day.


    The next morning, she raced through her tasks and took half a day off from work.


    Larissa left the hotel early and managed to arrive at the kindergarten in time for the students to


    go home.


    After the children from toddler and junior sses had left, the students from the senior ss


    lined up to go home.


    The parents and guardians walked inside in an orderly manner to pick the children up.


    Although the kindergarten appeared crowded due to therge number of people, it wasn’t chaotic.


    Suddenly, someone grabbed Larissa’s arm from behind. “Lari?”


    The familiar voice made Larissa stop in her tracks.


    Her body stiffened instantly as her racing heartbeat seemed to thump louder and louder.


    It grew so loud that the sound reverberated in her ears like a drumbeat, making her momentarily

    She hadn’t aged much in the past five years. Her face was as wless as Larissa had remembered


    previously, probably due to her anti–aging skin routine.


    Larissa almost called her “Mom,” but she caught herself in time and greeted Violet politely.

    Tears of sorrow welled up in Violet’s eyes as she tried to regain herposure.


    “Lari!” she choked up, gripping Larissa’s arm tighter.


    Their strange behavior caught the attention of other parents nearby, who turned to stare at them

    conscience.


    They walked up the stairs together and stopped at the entrance of the same ssroom.


    Larissa and Violet exchanged nces and saw the same surprise in each other’s eyes.

    Larissa let Violet go into the ssroom first.
