Chapter 5 The Wedding Rings
On Monday, Betty went to work at Filson Magazine and came to the finance department during the
lunch break. It took her a lot of effort to get an advance on her sry.
After confirming her paycheck, Betty called Kerwin. The phone beeped.
“Hello.”
A deep, attractive voice came. For some unknown reason, Betty felt a little nervous.
“Mr. Martin, it’s me,” Betty said. “The other day in the restaurant, you paid the bill for me. It was $5,000.
Could you tell me your bank ount? I’ll wire you the money.”
The man on the other end was silent. Betty was wondering if he had forgotten about his ‘new wife’
when the cool, deep voice came again.
“You’ve kept it in mind?” he asked in an amused and helpless tone. “It’s okay.”
“I have to pay you back,” Betty insisted.
“We’re married and keeping careful ounts is unnecessary.”
He then hung up the phone without waiting for Betty’s response.
Holding the phone, Betty sighed under her breath.
There were still two hours to go before the interview in the afternoon. Betty thought of what Kerwin had
said earlier, grabbed the bank card, and went to the nearest mall.
Wedding rings were necessary for their marriage.
Betty didn’t have the slightest clue of Kerwin’s financial conditions and thus bought the cheapest pair.
She put one ring on her finger, put away the other one in the box, and went back to work.
Betty sat down at her desk and prepared to go over the interview file again. Sarah and Jessica, who
were in the same office, side over in their chairs. Their eyes glittering, they asked, “Betty, did you buy a
ring?”
Betty froze, looked down at the glow, and gave a dryugh.
“Your eyes are sharp.” Betty didn’t n to keep it from them. After all, those in the HR department had
learned about her permanent residency in Chicago. Probably, the others would soon hear about her
marriage. “I’m married.”
“What, this is so sudden.” Jessica’s eyes rounded, and she said, “Congrattions.”
Betty smiled. Sarah couldn’t wait to size up the ring,
“Betty, did your husband buy it for you?” Sarah leaned over for a closer look but furrowed her
were in the same office, side over in their chairs. Their eyes glittering, they asked, “Betty, did you buy a
ring?”
Betty froze, looked down at the glow, and gave a dryugh.

Betty smiled. Sarah couldn’t wait to size up the ring.
“Betty, did your husband buy it for you?” Sarah leaned over for a closer look but furrowed her brows,
“Ah, the diamond is not quite big. How much is it?”
The pair of rings Betty had selected was the cheapest, and the diamond was just a splinter. Not a vain
woman, she replied frankly, “Around 1,000 dors.”
Sarah’s brows were knitted together.
“Betty, this is not okay,” she said in a serious tone. “This ring is a symbol of marriage. A man, who
wouldn’t buy a fine ring for you, is not reliable.”
Betty smiled instead ofmenting on it. She knew that girls at Sarah’s age were vain. To her,
however, rings didn’t matter at all.
“Never importune things out of your power.” Betty scratched the surface of the problem, but the eyes of
Sarah and Jessica glimmered with sympathy. Probably, they saw her husband as a poor man.
Truth be told, Betty didn’t know whether Kerwin was poor or rich.
It didn’t bother her.
“Well, let’s not talk about that.” Betty was unwilling to dwell on it. “How is the preparation going?”
“Haha, I’m totally ready!” Betty’s diversion worked as Sarah enthused. “Betty, how do I look today?”
Only then did Betty notice her pink-and-white suit and skirt. Her hair had also been preened.
“Gorgeous,” Betty sang her praise.
Sarah’s eyes glittered with joy, “What do you say? Would the bachelor CEO of Watkin Fund take a
Tiking to me?”
Betty froze for a moment before realizing why Sarah had been dressed to the teeth. It was for the
sake of their interviewee, the CEO of Tylman Group.
