Chapter Forty-Nine

    Chapter Forty-Nine

Ambrose sat down against the tree. Class upgrades felt serious to him, it would establish his path further and how he progressed in the world. It informed the skills he would late receive, and likely shape how his existing skills upgraded. Before he got down to it, he wanted to see his character sheet now before he did anything to it.

Studying his sheet, he summoned Noelle, and the white arcane tiger settled down next to him, head in his lap. She was do an upgrade as well, and Ambrose felt fairly sure that would come after he selected his class upgrades.

Idly, he scratched Noelle’s ears. He decided to assign his points before he looked at his potential classes. He had gained forty levels for closing the final Incursion, which was wild to him, but he wasn’t the one deciding. More power was welcome, since it served his goals.

Assigning his points was easy, he just put sixty-four points into each of his five stats. When he was done, he brought up just his new stats.

    [Constitution: 399

    Strength: 399

    Intellect: 399

    Wisdom: 399

    Willpower: 413]

He was beginning to feel truly powerful, and he wasn’t even done progressing yet. Willing his answer to the System, he brought up his class choices.

[Infernal Crusader of Realm Walking-Legendary (Sage)]: Infernal Crusaders bring the their will and fight to all realms. They use portals not just as a means of travel, but of attack. With this class you are able to freely manipulate portals, and are able to open up multiple portals. +10 attribute points per level up.]

Ambrose liked the class. The portals he currently used allowed him a lot of tactical freedom. He could use them to get around the battlefield, redirect attacks, and even dodge if need be. This class would also give him the freedom to go wherever he wished.

That was useful in more ways than one. First of all, he would need to start hunting down criminals again. His profession was falling behind, and Avalon needed energy. He had neglected it so far, and though he had gotten away with it so far, he felt like it wouldn’t be long before that might bite him in the ass.

Being able to realm walk, as the class called it, would give him options.

    He pulled up another class.

[Infernal Paladin-Legendary (Sage)]: Continue down the same path you have walked so far. Being farther down the path, you grow in power. +10 attributes per level.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to continue as he had been. There was something to be said for not fixing what wasn’t broken. It just felt stagnate, like he wasn’t moving forward. Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

Marking it with a mental maybe, he moved on.

[Infernal Lumberjack-Legendary (Sage)]: Your power with an axe is unmatched. Wield infernal powers related to the axe and-

Ambrose dismissed the notification, not bothering to read it further. He wasn’t interested in focusing on a single weapon. He moved on to the last option,

[Infernal Wizard-Legendary (Sage)]: Wizards use skills through incantations and lean into using Words of Power. People on this path are on the path to power some would say is even beyond the System. +10 to attributes per level.

Ambrose paused in scratching Noelle, who chuffed at him, letting out a little mooing sound. She batted his hand for him to keep going, and after a moment, he did. The class offered looked simple on the surface, but he knew it was anything but.

He wasn’t interested in a pure skill path, which this seemed to be. What he was interested in was the Words of Power. Something told him that selecting this class would make using, and acquiring Words of Power a lot easier.

However, the problem was that he didn’t want to be a wizard. Wizards were squishy, as one of his very first encounters had shown. If Words of Power were locked behind the class, then that would decide the matter for him. But that wasn’t so, because he had already gained access to one.

Clearly, that meant he didn’t need the class. Power beyond the System was alluring, but Ambrose felt like that was because of the Words of Power.

Infernal Crusader and Infernal Paladin appealed to him more. Infernal Paladin was just an upgraded version of the class he already had. Infernal Crusader though really opened up his options. It felt like a continuation of his path, like an apprentice becoming a journeyman or expert.

Yes, it was a little more…niche than what he was doing now, but that was okay. Specializing your craft was a path people often took. A blade smith, for example, obviously focused on blades. Whilst a farrier focused on shoeing horses.

    Specializing wasn’t a bad thing.

Portals gave him a tactical advantage, and expanding on that was something he really wanted to do.

He thought about it for a while longer as he allowed his fingers to glide through Noelle’s soft white fur. He had promised not to rush into things any longer, and he wasn’t about to do that here.

After a few moments, he realized he had already made his decision. Taking a breath, he willed his answer to the System.

[You are now an Infernal Crusader. Your Hellfire Manipulation Skill has evolved. As a C-Grade being with an upgraded class, Noelle will be upgraded, Merlin’s Grimoire will be upgraded. Standby…]

White light enveloped Noelle, and the grimoire within his Infernal Realm pulsed with radiant crimson light. Noelle rose in the air, and her form shimmered, twisting, and changing.

Ambrose felt his eyes widen as Noelle was changed from a tiger, to a young woman.

A smattering of white and black freckles dusted her face, and her eyes were like lightning crafted into crystalline orbs. Her white hair was wild, frizzy and with no sense of style. Black and white furred ears poked through her hair, twitching back and forth.

She wore an oversized shirt with stripes of white, blue and black decorating it. A tail swished from her back almost as if it had a mind of its own. Noelle lifted her delicate hands, looking at them while Ambrose openly gaped.

Ambrose would have placed her at maybe twenty-years old, small and lithe, the shirt she wore went past her knees. Lightning arched around her hands, and she made a fist.

Her eyes glanced upward, meeting Ambrose’s own. She beamed, and promptly through herself into his arms.

She tried to chuff like she had before, but what came out was a squeak. She frowned, and opened her mouth, trying again. Her frown deepened, she poked at her throat.

Opening her mouth, she attempted to speak,

    “A-ah-ah.”

    Another frown.

Ambrose couldn’t help it, he laughed. He held his hands to his sides, air leaving his body as laughter bubbled out of him in an uncontrollable burst, He tried to suck in air, couldn’t, and fell to the ground.

Noelle was not amused, fist on hips, she puffed out her cheeks, and her glare could split a tree.

    “You’re-ah..Hahaha! C-aat girl, ah!”

Somehow, he should have saw that coming.
