Light at the end of the tunnel

    Sofie’s POV

“Is there anything I can help you with?” Amy asked, from where she was perched on the kitchen ind.

I stared at the freshly rolled cinnamon roll on the baking sheet, and shook my head. “No. It’s alright, I can manage.”

She nodded in response as she threw some popcorn into her mouth. “You know we could have ordered in some cinnamon rolls instead of you stressing yourself.”

I rolled my eyes. “It’s been three weeks since I had home-made food, Amy and it’s the baby craving for it, not me.”

Amy raised her hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay. I’m sorry for asking.”

I just scoffed before cing the cinnamon rolls into the preheated oven.

“By the way, you still haven’t told me about how your lunch date with Damien went yesterday.” I said, taking a seat beside her on the kitchen ind.

She blushed and I huffed in amusement.

The effect Damien had on her was crazy.

Her lips instantly curved into a coy smile as she fiddled with her fingers. “It wasn’t a date, Sofie. We just went out to get lunch.”

“Yeah, I see.” I nodded in mockery. “You just went to get lunch, didn’t you? You came home with messy hair and hickeys all over your neck and back, at eight in the evening, but you went to get just lunch, didn’t you?”

“The housekeeper failed to properly clean this ce again.” Amy grumbled, as she climbed off the kitchen ind and retrieved a rag from the countertop.

“See, you’re avoiding the question.” I taunted her, with a wicked smile arching my lips.

“I need to reprimand the housekeeper when next shees here. Everywhere is just so dusty.” Amy muttered, deliberately dusting my hands with the tag.

“Oops, I’m sorry.” She imed, to which I just snorted.

I was about to tease her again when my phone vibrated with an iing call from Damien.

Damien rarely called me. Whenever he had something to tell me, he always came over to the house.

Something serious must have happened for him to have called me, and the thought caused me to feel uneasy.

I felt my heart thump with nervousness as I roamed my thumb over the screen.

Inhaling deeply, I mustered up enough courage and clicked on the answer button and pressed my phone against my ear.

“Hey, what’s up?” I asked, feigning a cheerful tone.

“I have good news for you. Our efforts have finally paid off.” He supplied, and my anxiety instantly fizzled out, and got reced with tion.

“You have good news for me? That’s great to hear. What is it?” I asked.

Amy stopped cleaning, and moved closer to sit beside me on the kitchen counter.

I put my phone on speaker before cing it on the countertop.

“Alexander Guilon has agreed to testify against Lana Hernandez, and he has also confessed to aiding and abetting her in carrying out her crimes. The search warrant is currently being processed, it should be ready by eitherter today or tomorrow morning.” Damien revealed, which caused Amy and I to gasp in unison.

“Oh my goodness! Finally, babe! Fucking finally!” Amy shrieked, pulling me into a hug.

I went limp in her arms as tears of relief welled up in my eyes at the unexpected yet joyful news.

“Sofie, are you still there?” Damien’s voice rang out from the other end.

I could only nod because my voice was clogged up by tears.

“She’s still here. She’s just using a moment to take everything in.” Amy replied to him, being the sweetheart she was.

“Oh, I can understand. It also sounded unreal to me when the detective told me earlier today. It was only when I read through his written confession and listened to his recorded voice confession that I also believed it.”

“Thanks for everything, Damien. You’ve done so much for us that I don’t even know whether I’d be able to reward you in this life or the next.” I sobbed. This belongs to N?velDrama.Org: ?.

“Now is not the moment to cry, Sofie. This is a time for jubtion because Roman has also agreed to start psychotherapy tomorrow. It’s only a matter of time before everything goes back to how it used to be.”

    “I’m d to hear that.” I whispered.

“I have to get back to work now. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He replied before hanging up.

“Pinch me.” I said, outstretching my arm to Amy.

She hesitated before giving me a hard, nasty pinch on my forearm.

When I darted her a re, she just shrugged.

“You asked for it.” She imed.

“I still can’t believe it. What could have brought about the sudden change of heart? What if this is just one of Lana’s ns? What if they’re plotting to finish Roman off this time? Wh-”

“Okay, that’s enough.” Amy cut my anxiety-induced rant off, as she led me away from the kitchen to the living room.

“Don’t you think this is all happening too fast?” I asked her, to which she sighed.

“Trust me, it’s not happening too fast. The detectives have been on this case for almost eight weeks now. That’s more than enough time for them to get a fruitful response.” She responded, holding my hands.

    “You think?”

“Yes, babe. Stop overthinking and jubte just like Damien told you to.”

“I just want to give my child a happy, and loving home without having them worry about anything. Knowing Lana is still out there greatly unnerves me.” I confessed.

“By this time tomorrow, she’d have been locked up and vo, you will have that life and family you’ve always dreamed of.” Amy reassured me with a soft smile which I mirrored.

I was surprised when my phone suddenly vibrated with an iing call from Damien for the second time.

Amy and I shared a look before I answered the call, with my heart mming against my ribs.

“Sofie, he’s back. Information reaching me right now is that Roman has just regained his lost memory and he’s asking for you. Also, Lana has just been arrested at the hospital.” Damien disclosed.

If the grip I had on my phone at that moment had been slightly weaker, my phone would have ended up on the floor with a cracked screen.
