《The Silent Protector: A Martial Peak Story》
Chapter2. The Cave of Legacy
Eight years i have now ventured alone in the outside world.
I have seen mountains -
Rivers and Forests.
Many beasts and animals roaming these parts.
All looked different,
no place for me among them.
Until that one fated day...
I stumbled upon a road.
To me, strange creatures walking on 2 legs gathered around -
a hole in the ground.
They looked the same age as me.
Looked exactly as me.
Their Body¡¯s similar to mine, but moving differently.
They made strange noises to each other,
unable to understand for me, but it seemed they understood.
I was curios - it was new and unknown to me.
But my instincts told me,
don''t approach¡ªdanger!
So i stayed hidden,
In the forest trees. Just observing for the next days.
I observed them for two days and nights.
Then they started to gather again
Forming lines ¨C jumping into the hole they surrounded.
I was curios.
Then I felt it ¨C a call from the hole.
Drawn to it, but I could not enter. I was not one of them.
Then, an idea flickered in my head.
inner thought
check surrounding?
I checked ¨C I looked around. But no entrance to be found.
There was only the hole.
Stepping closer to the hole -
a strange circle appeared below me.
Then a flash of light ¨C and then darkness surrounded me.
My eyes, slowly adjusting.
I was inside something ¨C a cave.
And there were these strange noises again.
inner thought
am i inside?
They didn¡¯t notice me yet. I was behind a boulder.
To far away for them to see me.
The humans seemed to be fighting some Golem like creatures. All out of stone.
I learned from the wolves and living in the wild -
i should only hunt when i need to and only be seen when necessary.
Life can be unforgiving and i should not risk it without reason.
So i decided to look around myself.
I walked around the cave i got teleported into.
A smell¡ a stream of thin Air heading towards a direction.
It was subtly, barely noticeable.
I followed it for a while.
There it was ¨C a dark room, a chamber appeared.
It looked like a small cave in a bigger cave.
But something was off. It was dark¡ªdarker then any cave, darker then any night.
I felt it, a distortion in space.
I knew, because i was always aware of space around me.
After i got closer to the entrance of the Chamber, i finally saw it.
It was a scale.
Seemed like a dragon scale in Black, Blue and purple.
It was beautiful and the air around it seemed to form waves.
Before noticing that i have gone closer -
i was already in front of it.
Breathing slow and calm, just looking at it, observing it.
It felt like something important¡ªsomething i have never seen before -
something of meaning.
I picked it up and stored it away closely -
then I left.
While walking back to where i saw the humans -
i was reminiscing about it.
It felt weird but also comforting¡ªAs if it called for me to be taken away.
And i knew instinctively, the humans didn¡¯t notice the stream of air.
They didn¡¯t know about this Chamber and what i found.
After my return to the place were I saw the humans fight.
It seemed as if they have just finished fighting and were about to leave.
So i followed.
Hiding behind boulder and in shadows.
Always keeping my distance and always observing.
And there it appeared.
Days have passed but the environment did not change.
A faint light appeared ¨C The Exit.
Finally able to leave the Cave -
i went my own way.
Directly into the woods.
The land was strange, but hunting felt more natural.
After not eating for days in the cave, I felt hungry.
I found a small animal.
While hunting it, my prey fled towards other Cultivator¡ªOther humans.
I stopped¡ but to late.
They have already noticed me.
First they looked at me -
trying to figure out to which sect i belonged of those who entered.
But i didn¡¯t stand like any human would.
I didn¡¯t act like any human would.
So they asked:
Which sect are you from?
I didn''t understand.
It was again these strange noises.
I shifted my head slightly, questioning what he was saying.
But that seemed to provoke them, their faces changed slightly¡ªmore aggressive and i felt it.
They began to become hostile.
Immediately I growled, a warning, but ready to fight.
Then they snapped.:
So you don''t want to answer, just say that you want to fight.
I never have cultivated, so they thought i was weak, a normal human.
The fight begun.
I was used to hunt from the shadows and only rarely had to confront someone directly -
and now there was not 1 but 3 opponents.
It was a disadvantage, but it was also my life threatened.
I didn''t wait for them to charge at me.
I saw humans fight already against the stone Golems.
I charged at them-
jumped to the side.
Then i circled around them. Fast. Focused. Looking for an opening.
There.
One turned his back.
I moved.
In a blink, I was on him. I jumped.
A clean strike¡ªprecise to the neck. He dropped.
Already gone, back into the shadows, circling once more.
The other 2 were shocked for a moment -
but then they turned more cautious.
Looking to where I disappeared, towards every shift in the wind.
They found me.
One charging at me.
I looked at him, still running.
The second person already moved.
He was almost beside me.
That''s when i noticed-
the one charging at me, was for drawing my attention away.
A breath later-
i felt a kick towards my side. And then
i flew through the air, landing meters away from them.
They were strong, i had to acknowledge.
My side pained but it wasn''t bad.
So i stood up again, this time i just charged at them.
We exchanged punches and kicks.
I aimed for the vital spots, as i have learned.
I was fast and agile.
My movements were different and not easily traceable by them.
They landed a few hits, but the damage they took was to great.
After a few breaths,
they started to loose ground.
One tried to flee, but he didn''t reach far.
There was a rule in survival. ¡®¡®Never leave your back open to an enemy.¡®¡®
i ran towards him and struck his throat.
Now only one was left.
We both were injured. Both breathing hard.
But that''s what a fight was like, when the life was on the line.
I had many of those in the wild.
I walked up to him.
First slow. Then growing faster.
With a fast strike to the heart, he fell.
Then a roar fell over the forest.
It sounded like a beast fell.
But i did not pay much attention to it.
I was injured and there was nothing for me to do.
So i rested for a few hours.
After resting i started to hunt again.
Still injured but also hungry, i had to eat something.
Finally, after a successful hunt, I was able to go and sleep.
The light faded. The darkness came.
My eyes closed-
the dawn arrived.
I opened my eyes, slowly. It was like every day.
I was still injured, but i began to wander around. Take in whatever i saw.
The trees dancing with the wind.
The shadows aligning along the world.
The wind singing his own melody.
It was peaceful.
And soon the evening was about to approach, so I began my hunt again.
I hunted every day for something to eat.
But this time, it was not supposed to be for me alone.
Yang Kai¡¯s perspective:
Old demon:
¡®¡®Young Master¡ we¡¯re not alone.¡®¡®
¡®¡®There is someone nearby. Quiet. Close. He is not a cultivator¡ not in the traditional sense atleast. Their aura is strange. Balanced. No killing intent. But clearly watching.¡®¡®
Yang Kai exhaled quietly.
¡®¡®Danger?¡®¡®
¡®¡®Not immediately. I can strike if you wish¡ but I''d advise waiting. This one¡ feels like the forest itself. Like a beast that chooses not to bare its fangs.¡®¡®
Yang Kai, didn¡¯t answer.
He simply listened to the wind.
And then, he felt it too.
A presence at the edge of awareness ¨C it wasn''t hostile. Not loud. It was just there.
He turned his head slightly, slowly and his eyes settled upon that beast. (Me)
A figure crouched in partial shadow, half hunched, body relaxed but cautious. More like a wold than a man. Dressed in rough hide, wild eyes watching, blood still staining the hands from his last hunt.
He didn''t flinch under my gaze.
He simply observed.
Then he stepped forward. No sound. No words.
He approached slowly, deliberately, until he reached a comfortable distance. Just out of reach, just close enough to be seen.
I watched.
And when he dropped the prey to the floor and sat ¨C not as a guest or intruder, but as one who knew how to share a den. I understood.
He tore meat with his hand, set aside 3 pieces.
Two for the sisters and one for me.
After that, he sat down again and ate.
Old Demon:
A faint chuckle.
¡®¡®A wolf who brings his own kill to the pack. How rare.¡®¡®
My perspective:
While hunting, it got dark.
The shadows stretched over the world. The wind began to grow colder and i was exhausted from the hunt.
I found a cave nearby.
The perfect place for the night.
Starting to get closer with my prey, i felt a presence.
Someone was already there.
Cautiously i got closer, not threatening¡ªJust checking.
It was a man and two woman who looked identical.
They didn''t seem to be hostile, they just looked at me.
I didn''t feel any danger from them, so i moved forward, slowly.
There seemed to be no food with them.
So i wondered.:
¡®¡®Did they eat already? Do they need food?¡®¡®
Then i decided.
¡®¡®I just give them a slice. I can hunt again tomorrow and they allowed me to stay.¡®¡®
I put down my prey.
Sit down. Then cut three pieces.
Bring them slowly towards the female first, then the male.
After that, i return to my prey and start eating.
Finished eating and seeing the Moon rising, it was time to rest.
I positioned myself near the wall and then i cleaned myself as i was taught.
Wiping my hands on dry grass, licking my wrists clean and grooming. That''s what the wolves taught me. That''s how i grew up. That was me.
No speaking. No noises.
And i soon began to sleep.
As the night sky shifted, the sun began to rise.
It was a normal day, but it was different this time.
I stood up.
This time checking the humans in the cave.
Not saying anything, not thinking anything.
Then i went out. Without a word.
I went hunting again, but this time not for myself.
The last meal was meager, cause i shared it.
This time, i hunted for all of us.
After wandering through the rising of the light, i found a prey big enough.
I hunted it as usual from the shadows¡ªFrom the dark. Striking without them knowing.
Time passed as I¡¯ve returned to the cave.
Sitting down again at the same place as yesterday.
Cutting off 3 slices again, this time bigger.
And then giving each their slice.
Then i lay down, eat, clean and rest.
inner thought
I was almost like, the days I have spent with the pack.
Yang Kai¡¯s perespective:
Mei-er and Jiao-er remained in meditation, their auras slowly stabilizing. The cave grew quieter. Even the wind seemed to settle, as if in deference to the stillness within.
The stranger that appeared yesterday remained asleep for much of the evening. And at some point in the early morning, vanished without a word.
There was no scent. No sound. He was just gone.
But it doesn''t matter, if he wanted to harm us, he had plenty of opportunities.
It¡¯s already dusk and he did not return.
Then the wind shifted again and the strange but familiar presence returned.
Dragging another carcass. Bigger this time.
¡®¡®So he hunted again¡¯¡®
He approaches the same resting spot. Still doesn¡¯t speak.
He does the same thing as yesterday. First he sits down, then cuts slices with his hands and gives each of us a slice that he cuts off.
He followed his own rhythm. No unnecessary action. Doesn¡¯t waste effort. Like a beast that had survived too many winters to bother with anything less than what mattered.
And now after eating, he cleanse himself again. Grooms and curls up near the wall.
Softly saying:
¡®¡®¡You don¡¯t need words, do you?¡®¡®
immediately after, he stirred.
Not alarmed, just a shift.
His ears Twitched.
Then their head slowly lifted, eyes meeting mine with the same calm. Not aggressive, just... aware.
Then he tilted his head slightly, like a wolf trying to interpret the call of a strange bird or scenting an unfamiliar wind.
As if he is asking:
¡®¡®What do you want?¡®¡® or ¡®¡®What did you say?¡®¡®
I raised my hand, palm open, slow, and lightly shook my head.
¡®¡®Nothing.¡®¡® i said.

I didn''t expect him to respond.
When he suddenly rose slowly.
It didn¡¯t seem like he would attack me, but just in case i readied myself.
He started to walk over to me, not directly but cautiously, like an animal approaching a den it hadn¡¯t been invited into, but knew it would not be chased from.
I watched him closely, but to my surprise he lowered himself right beside me. Close enough for his shoulder to brush me.
He didn''t behave like a Human. He behaved like a beast and in their language, this meant... Warmth, Protection and trust.
He wasn''t submitting to me, it was saying. I trust you.
Then time passed and the night shifted to day.
My perspective:
I woke up, but i didn''t move yet.
I just lay silently next to Yang Kai. Listening to the wind.
My instincts told me, there was no need to hunt today. The hunt will come to me.
Then the two females opened their eyes. Jiao-er had traces of a breakthrough.
Both of them felt stronger, clearer and more connected then before.
After coming to their senses, they stood up.
Looked towards the mouth of the cave.
They saw Yang Kai, where he positioned himself for the entire time.
Back straight, eyes calm. Still alert and still not moving.
But there was something different.
Someone was next to him, half-curled against his side, lay a stranger.
A figure wrapped in rough hides and weather-stained cloth.
Hair tangled but clean.
Hands faintly stained with dried blood from a previous hunt.
He lay still, wasn¡¯t defensive, not hostile. He was just there.
Like a Watchdog at the alpha¡¯s side.
I heard them ask:
¡®¡®...Who?¡®¡®
Yang Kai answered quietly, voice steady.
¡®¡®He¡¯s no threat.¡®¡®
Jiao¡¯er narrowed her eyes slightly.
¡®¡®Not a disciple¡ but not an enemy?¡®¡®
My ears twitched and I felt, they were still wary of me.
Mei-er tilted her head.
¡®¡®He¡ or She? Do you know?¡®¡®
Yang Kai answered:
¡®¡®Does it matter?¡®¡®
and then the sisters exchanged a glance.
It didn''t matter.
Then i stood up.
I looked at them.
Then slowly walked up to them and pushed over their slices of meat i gave them to eat.
I didn¡¯t wait for a reaction cause my point was clear. ¡®¡®Here is food, strengthen yourself.¡®¡®
After that, i went back to Yang Kai.
Shortly after i laid down, a sudden roar ran over the land.
It was a dangerous sound but i already knew about it.
I felt a beast fighting not to far away.
It was strong, to strong for me alone.
So i waited for them to move with me.
After the roar went over the lands.
There was no need to speak. We rushed towards it.
But when we arrived, i stopped.
Humans firing weird things.
Rushing onto that Beast.
It was a scary sight seen.
The beast was strong so many Humans were attacking it. So many strange noises i never heard.
My instincts told me, this beast was not the only danger here.
Then i noticed someone approaching.
I Hid behind Yang Kai.
He was calling out for Jiao-er.
He(Long Jun) explained to her:
¡®¡®Jie Hongchen led a bunch of people to try and steal the treasure it was guarding while it was asleep. Unfortunately, it woke up and gave chase. That idiot then led it all the way back to High Heaven Pavilion¡¯s gathering spot, and, well, that¡¯s that.¡®¡®
Yang Kai then asked:
¡®¡®What did Jie Hongchen find?¡®¡®
Long Jun then replied:
¡®¡®Who the hell are you?¡®¡®
Jiao-er intervened:
¡®¡®Answer the question, i want to know too.¡®¡®
Then he answered:
¡®¡®I¡¯m not sure. But according to him, there was nothing there.¡®¡®
and so the conversation went on for a moment longer.
I did not understand. I did not care. I just knew. The beast, was a key to something.
I observed the battle. Already looking for a way, for weaknesses.
Su Yan:
¡®¡®High Heaven Pavilion Disciples, retreat!¡®¡®
And the turtle like Beast launched an attack at her.
Somehow she managed to summon a big ice like statue which then attacked the Turtle Beast and froze it.
But the women coughed and blood came out. And the beast attacked once more before it froze completely.
I noticed a sudden shift next to me.
Yang Kai moved.
He charged in to catch her¡ªSave her.
But the attack that was meant for the women, hit him instead.
He was hit directly, launched meters away on the ground.
But got up a few breaths after the hit.
I already started following him from the ground. He was the only one i felt safe around.
He didn¡¯t hurt me. He didn¡¯t harm me and he charged in for someone else.
I thought:
¡®¡®He is like me, he also helps others who need help and protects them.¡®¡®
When i arrived at his side:
Old Demon:
¡®¡®Hehe¡ Young Master, your little stray has returned. Like a hound that found its pack.¡®¡®
Su Yan:
¡®¡®Who...?¡®¡®
But she did not finish the sentence.
I looked into her eyes for a moment.
Then turned-
facing the beats.
Yang Kai:
¡®¡®He¡¯s with me.¡®¡®
Then the ice cracked, the Beast turtle was about to break out.
I charged in, attacking it¡¯s limbs-
while Yang Kai charged his new found technique.
The turtle Beast¡¯s head fell down, but i knew it was not yet finished.
I kept attacking, while the other cultivator¡¯s started to charge in.
Su Yan then finished it off,
but in this last breath.
A desperate flick with his tail hit me and launched me to the side.
I curled up as i usually did when i was wounded.
Two ribs were broken.
It was not good, but it wasn¡¯t the worst i ever had either.
Yang Kai noticed me flying through the air.
He was weakened but not blind.
He was moving towards me.
When he arrived, he saw me.
Mei¡¯er and Jiao¡¯er followed behind him.
A figure curled inward, half hidden in the broken stone.
Blood smeared across my ribs, one arm pulled tight against my side.
Not moving-
but breathing.
I looked up at him. Slowly.
inner thought
He came, he cares?
Then I noticed the other two. The females.
inner thought
They also came. Strange.
Sharing food was good.
I slowly move-
trying to stand up.
Cause I noticed, the air was changing.
The true inheritance is about to appear.
Yang Kai shouts:
¡¯¡¯Retreat ten miles if you don¡¯t want to die!¡¯¡¯
No reaction.
Su Yan shouts:
¡¯¡¯high heaven Pavilion retreat ten miles!¡¯¡¯
Then they started to move.
Wondering about why she listens to Yang Kai.
I follow behind Yang Kai.
inner thoughts
I¡¯ll have to stay close to him.
To dangerous.
Ten miles away.
Su Yan:
¡¯¡¯Should we get away further?¡¯¡¯
Yang Kai:
¡¯¡¯No, I think we¡¯ll be fine.¡¯¡¯
In that moment I felt two people arriving.
Junior Sister to Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯He¡¯s hurt. Who is that with him?¡¯¡¯
Fang Ziqi to Junior Sister:
¡¯¡¯No idea. Not important right now.¡¯¡¯
Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯Brother Yang.¡¯¡¯
Junior Sister:
¡¯¡¯How¡¯s your injury, Yang Kai?¡¯¡¯
Yang Kai:
¡¯¡¯I¡¯m fine. Thanks for your concern.¡¯¡¯
(junior sister gazes at me)
Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯I¡¯m Fang Ziqi. That punch you threw earlier was certainly phenomenal.¡±
Yang Kai:
¡¯¡¯You flatter me.¡¯¡¯
Fang Ziqi:
¡°You are a true man, the most heroic I¡¯ve ever seen. If it weren¡¯t for us being in different sects, I¡¯d truly love to swear to be blood brothers.¡±
Jiao¡¯er:
¡¯¡¯Excuse me!¡¯¡¯
Yang Kai:
¡°Ahem. Let¡¯s stop this conversation here. Does Brother Fang have something to discuss?¡±
Fang Ziqi:
I¡¯ll get straight to the point. How much do you know about what¡¯s happening now?
Earlier, it was you who told us to move away¡ªbefore anything happened.
I¡¯m guessing you have some prior knowledge¡ but I¡¯m not going to force you to share if you¡¯re unwilling.¡±
Yang Kai:
¡°Brother Fang, I do have some information, but it can only be confirmed after the thing within the clouds shows itself.¡±
Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯Shows itself? What thing?¡¯¡¯
Yang Kai:
¡°Brother Fang, we are in a cave of legacy. Surely you could guess.¡±
Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯Thank you for the tip, Brother Yang.¡¯¡¯
Then his eyes shift slightly ¨C not toward Yang Kai ¨C but toward the quiet, crouched figure beside him. Me.
Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯...The one with you¡ not from your sect?¡¯¡¯
Yang Kai:
¡¯¡¯No. But he¡¯s with me.¡¯¡¯
Fang Ziqi:
¡¯¡¯¡I see. Then I¡¯ll take my leave.¡¯¡¯
inner thoughts
Words¡ again. Too many words.
But the land speaks louder now.
The space breathes strange.
The den is opening.
The staircase of Trials appeared.
A strong gust of wind swirled through the air. Behind it, a Golden staircase going up into the Sky towards a Golden Palace.
That was the true inheritance -
That was all we have been waiting for.
That was what called me here. Not to take but to be there.
After it finally settled down and the Staircase finished descending.
Many disciples from all sects rushed towards it.
Su Yan was the first to arrive on it.
Yang Kai followed a bit later.
And then I followed slowly after Yang Kai.
My trial of walking up the stairs began.
My first step, I felt it.
Weight.
What is this pressure?
Is it¡ presence?
I¡¯ve asked myself.
The air thickened, not like mist or cold, but like a mountain pressing down through time.
Looking ahead-
The stairs stretched high, vanishing into glowing mist above.
Each one carved with ancient lines, runes I could not read. But I felt them.
They where watching.
They judged.
Many were climbing, but I did not see anyone. Each in their own trial.
This was no hunt.
There was no predator or prey.
Just a Path and the question.
Will you walk it?
I did.
Step One. Pain.
It hit me like a pressure in the ribs ¨C the exact place I¡¯d been struck earlier.
Old pain returned, flaring bright and fresh.
But it was not enough to stop me.
I exhaled-
then continued walking.
Step Four. Heat.
My skin burned, though there was no flame.
Memories surfaced¡ªthe day I lost my pack, the warmth I could never find again.
The ache of hunger, the stillness of waiting, the loneliness of not being found.
I gritted my teeth.
That¡¯s not enough to stop me! I thought to myself.
And so I continued walking.
Step nine. Doubt.
A whisper in my ear¡ªnot sound, but emotions.
¡®¡¯You don¡¯t belong here.¡¯¡¯
¡®¡¯You can¡¯t even speak their tongue.¡¯¡¯
¡®¡¯You are a beast in skin¡¯¡¯
I did not argue.
I knew it was true, but I won¡¯t give up.
inner thoughts
Yang Kai accepted me.
There is hope.
And I climbed further. Not looking back.
I just climbed.
While climbing and going through trial after trial.
I lost sense of time.
I only climbed.
The world narrowed into steps, breath, heartbeat.
The ache in my side grew dull.
Whispers faded.
The pressure no longer crushed me-
instead, it walked beside me.
As I reached the Final platform, the pressure vanished.
The wind touched my skin again.
Finally able to breath freely again.
I had not ascended.
I had returned.
Returned to something old.
Something forgotten.
The platform opened into light¡ªnot blinding, but full.
One step forward, and the world bent.
Stone vanished.
Wind ceased.
Voices dissolved.
I stood in nothing.
Then ¨C color.
The ground returned beneath my feet, but it was not stone. It was forest soil. Damp. Alive.
Trees stretched high above me, but their leaves whispered without sound.
Moonlight dappled the ground in silver.
I knew this place.
Not exactly¡ªbut in essence.
It felt like home.
And that¡¯s when my last trial began.
Phase One: The Lost Pack
shapes moved in the trees.
Wolves. Shadows. Eyes like lanterns.
They didn¡¯t approach.
They just watched.
Then¡ªthey turned and began to run.
I followed them without thinking.
I moved like I once did¡ªsilent steps, low breath, pulse steady.
But no matter how fast I moved, the wolves remained ahead, always out of reach.
Fast.
Harder.
But I could not catch them.
¡®¡¯You are not one of us.¡¯¡¯
The words didn¡¯t come from a voice.
They came from the forest itself.
I stopped.
The wolves vanished into the mist.
And in silence, I whispered back, not with my mouth, but my will:
¡®¡¯I never was.¡¯¡¯
And the mist acknowledged it.
Phase Two: The Mirror of Men
I entered a clearing.
There I stood¡ªbut as a human you had never been before.
Clothed in fine robes, standing tall, clean, refined.
A face with no dirt, no scars, no hunger.
I was a cultivator.
Part of a sect.
A version raised among people.
They looked at me. Not with hatred but-
with Pity.
¡®¡¯You don¡¯t know what it means to be strong.¡¯¡¯
I stepped forward and struck.
Not with rage-
but understanding.
And the mirror-self shattered¡ªnot from power, but from truth.
I didn¡¯t need to what they were.
I never had.
Phase Three: The Fall
The world opened beneath me.
No ground. No Sky.
Only a great Void.
I fell ¨C or floated¡ªsurrounded by stars that shimmered and vanished like thoughts.
A voice¡ªancient, cracked and layered¡ªechoed.
¡®¡¯What is your path?¡¯¡¯
I didn¡¯t answer.
I didn¡¯t need to.
Instead, I closed my eyes¡ and reached out.
Not for a sword or power.
But for the shape of the world.
The way shadows moved.
The silence between heartbeats.
The feeling of space between trees-
the breath of wind across fur.
And the void answered.
Two lights flared around me¡ªone soft and dark-
like a breeze through a forest at midnight.
The other thin and bright-
like the edge of a blade parting the air.
Shadow.
Space.
They pulsed once¡ªand passed into you.
Not as gifts.
Not as part of the inheritance.
But as reflection.
When I opened my eyes again-
I was standing at the platform.
The staircase behind me.
And the Palace in front of me.
The trial was over-
I held no weapon, no scroll, no flame of glory.
But inside?
I knew, my path more clearly than ever.
inner thought
¡®¡¯That¡¯s the reason I came here, that was the call from the cave.¡¯¡¯
There I noticed.
From inside the palace two huge auras collided.
But the presence of the cultivators seemed familiar.
It was Yang Kai and Su Yan-
cultivating the inheritance cultivation technique.
I did not move.
I didn¡¯t intend to.
Instead I lay down in front of the palace next to the stairs.
Waiting.
inner thoughts
Humans spoke with their mouths.
How did they do it?
Thinking back to when I observed Yang Kai speak with others.
Then I tried to mimic the sounds.
¡®¡¯No, ink will be fain.¡¯¡¯ (No, I think we¡¯ll be fine.¡¯¡¯
And so I practiced quietly.
As time passed and I was consumed by practicing speech.
The doors of the palace opened.
A dim light and two figures.
Yang Kai and Su Yan came out.
Just a few steps ahead of them¡ªright before the palace threshold.
I lay curled in the wind, silent and still.
Not asleep, just waiting.
Su Yan paused mid-step-
her eyes narrowing the moment she saw me.
Her aura flared just slightly¡ªcautious, sharp, protective.
Yang Kai raised a hand.
¡®¡¯It¡¯s alright. He¡¯s not a threat.¡¯¡¯
Su Yan looked at him, then back at me.
¡®¡¯He¡¯s not just not a threat¡ he¡¯s waiting.¡¯¡¯
I stirred at that.
Not startled. Just rising slowly, fluidly-
like a beast waking at the scent of its pack.
I looked at them.
That was the moment I practiced for.
I opened my mouth.
Mimicking the movement I had watched Yang Kai make so many times before.
The words cracked out dry and uneven, as if unused to shaping sound.
¡®¡¯An I tay if yu?¡¯¡¯ (Can I stay with you?)
The wind held still.
inner thoughts
¡¯¡¯Did I say it wrong?¡¯¡¯
I didn¡¯t look away.
I just kept looking at them-
waiting for a reaction.
Yang Kai blinked.
He had expected silence. Perhaps a nod. A movement.
But he did not expect me to speak.
Yang Kai¡¯s thoughts
¡¯¡¯He spoke.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯Not with instinct, not through action¡ but with words.¡¯¡¯
Then he realized.
¡¯¡¯He¡¯s been watching me this whole time.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯Every word I spoke.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯Every shape my mouth made.¡¯¡¯
¡®¡¯Every rhythm in my voice.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯He¡¯s been trying to learn this whole time, hasn¡¯t he?¡¯¡¯ Yang Kai said, voice low.
¡¯¡¯He doesn¡¯t just survive. He learns. He adapts. And now¡ he reaches out.¡¯¡¯
Beside him, Su Yan¡¯s eyes sharpened-
tracking every slight motion in the stranger¡¯s face.
¡¯¡¯¡He¡¯s learning to speak?¡¯¡¯ She asked, almost to herself.
her thought
¡¯¡¯How long has he been holding it in? Mimicking. Practicing. Failing. Trying again.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯No,¡¯¡¯ Yang Kai said. ¡¯¡¯He¡¯ choosing to. That¡¯s different.¡¯¡¯
Su Yan watched the wild figure-
the one that had curled beside Yang Kai¡¯s side like a beast by its alpha.
The same one who had bled beside them.
Hunted for them.
Guarded the gate.
And now¡ªhe asked to stay.
She took a step forward, her voice cool but deliberate.
¡¯¡¯Not ¡®if you can stay¡¯¡¡¯¡¯
Her eyes held his. No fear. No Pity. Just recognition.
¡¯¡¯You¡¯re already here.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯He¡¯s not like us,¡¯¡¯ she thought. ¡¯¡¯But he doesn¡¯t have to be.¡¯¡¯
My head tilted.
Trying to grasp what she said.
my thoughts
I don¡¯t understand, but-
she didn¡¯t push me away.
Does it mean they allowed?
Somewhere, faint and dry like leaves rustling across stone, Old Demon¡¯s chuckle drifted past them:
¡¯¡¯Hehe¡ the little stray speaks. Not well¡ªbut from the heart. That¡¯s rare among humans, too.¡¯¡¯
Yang Kai straightened again, glancing once more at the figure beside the palace doors.
his thoughts
¡¯¡¯He didn¡¯t ask for power.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯He asked for place.¡¯¡¯
¡¯¡¯Come on then,¡¯¡¯ Yang Kai said. ¡¯¡¯Let¡¯s go.¡¯¡¯
my thoughts
Let¡¯s go?
That¡¯s like a ¡®¡¯follow me.¡¯¡¯ right?
A realization hit me in that moment.
I am allowed to follow them.
And so I did.
