《Keeper of the Shrines [Reverse Harem, Why Choose, LitRPG]》 Chapter 1. Vivid Dreams The foxkin''s golden eyes locked with Nora''s across the moonlit clearing, freezing her in place. "You don''t belong here," the creature whispered, her black-and-white fur rippling in the otherworldly breeze. "And yet, you keep coming back." Nora took a hesitant step forward, drawn by something in that piercing gaze. The air between them seemed to shimmer with an electric current. The foxkin''s ears twitched as she tilted her head, studying Nora with a mixture of curiosity and¡ was that longing? "Who are you?" Nora''s voice caught in her throat. "Why do I keep dreaming about you?" The foxkin''s mouth curved into a playful smile. She extended one elegant hand, clawed fingers beckoning¡ Nora bolted upright in bed, heart hammering against her ribs. Sweat plastered her dark hair to her forehead as she gasped for breath, the phantom scent of pine and moss filling her nostrils. She brushed frantically at her arms, half-expecting to find dirt from the forest floor clinging to her skin. "Damn it," she whispered to her empty apartment. "Again." Over the past few weeks, Nora''s dreams had evolved from fleeting impressions into vivid, strikingly realistic adventures. She had always been a vivid dreamer, but these were something else¡ªso strikingly real that she often found herself catching phantom scents or feeling the lingering touch of beings who couldn''t possibly exist. "Just stress," she''d muttered to herself after she got to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face, trying to wash away the lingering scent of a forest she''d never visited. Still, it was hard to deny that the dreams felt far too structured to be random. Every night picked up where the last had left off, as though someone behind the scenes was crafting a carefully choreographed story. The dreams drew her into a world teeming with fantastical beings: beast-human hybrids with sleek, animalistic grace and creatures so alien they seemed plucked from another dimension. They weren''t just figures in the background; they interacted with her, pulling her deeper into their realm. Despite the unsettling nature of these encounters, Nora found herself looking forward to nightfall, her heart racing with a forbidden anticipation she hadn''t felt in years. Her fingers would hover over the sleep aid her shrink had prescribed, only to withdraw at the last moment, craving the intoxicating thrill that awaited her on the other side of consciousness. These imaginary adventures filled the void left by her lack of real-world romantic life. They provided an exhilarating and profoundly intimate escape. In her dream world, she experienced myriad interactions with unusual companions. And some of them¡ oh, they were quite sensual. Nora stumbled into her kitchen, her body moving through the morning routine on autopilot as her mind lingered in the forest clearing. Tea. Toast. Put the dishes into the sink. Each mundane action felt hollow compared to the vivid sensations of her dream. The foxkin''s golden eyes haunted her, that almost-touch lingering like static electricity on her fingertips. By the time she reached her desk and logged into her workstation, reality had grudgingly reasserted itself. The lines of code on her screen blurred as her eyelids drooped. Three days until the deadline, and the API integration was still failing. The big boss would expect an update by morning, but all she could think about was whether she''d return to that same clearing tonight. "Focus, damn it," she muttered, taking a sip of lukewarm tea that had long since lost its comforting aroma. Her desk was littered with empty energy drink cans, a half-eaten protein bar. A small framed photo stood near the screen: her parents posing by the Amalfi Coast in Italy¡ªa family holiday she''d been too busy to join last year. Next to it sat her neglected sketchbook, unopened for months now. Art had once been her escape, her way of processing emotions, but lately, even that felt like too much effort. Nora''s phone buzzed with a message from a friend: "Game night Friday? It''s been ages!" The third invitation this month. Nora sighed, typing a quick "Sorry, raincheck? Deadline hell," before tossing the phone aside. They were drifting away, one ignored invitation at a time. Her fingers absently traced the small crescent-shaped scar on her wrist¡ªa childhood memento from falling out of her grandfather''s apple tree, the same grandfather who''d filled her head with stories of spirit worlds and creatures that walked between realms. "Some people have one foot in each world," he''d told her, his eyes twinkling. "Just like you, little dreamer." She''d dismissed those tales as she grew older, embracing logic and code instead of fantasy. Now, she wasn''t so sure. Turning back to her monitor, she rubbed her tired eyes and forced herself to focus on the failing code. But inside her mind, a quiet voice wondered if the foxkin would be waiting for her tonight, and what secrets might finally be revealed if Nora had the courage to reach out and take her hand. The foxkin''s sharp, elegant features had an almost otherworldly beauty, and her playful yet piercing gaze lingered with Nora long after waking. She wasn''t like anything Nora had read about or seen in her usual media. The mystery gnawed at her, prompting a few awkward late-night Google searches that led her down an unexpected rabbit hole. Even now, instead of working on the project, Nora couldn''t stop muttering. "Foxkin¡ kitsune¡" Her screen glowed in the otherwise dark room. She skimmed pages of mythology, game lore, and fan art, her face burning as she stumbled across questionable sites. "What the hell am I even looking at?" she groaned, closing the tab. Where did these dreams originate? No amount of research explained why this character haunted her dreams¡ªor why these nightly visits felt so personal. The dreams weren''t just entertaining escapes. They were¡ intimate. Nora had never felt anything like the rush of excitement and connection she experienced with the foxkin. Each encounter left her both exhilarated and disoriented. The therapy changed nothing, and dreams continued to animate Nora''s sleep on a daily, or maybe it should be said on a nightly basis. And while Nora immensely enjoyed these pleasurable moments, she still wanted to figure out the source of these unusual experiences. She tried to ignore the allure at first, but the curiosity became unbearable. Determined to find a system in the madness, Nora began keeping a journal, scrawling down fragments of memory before the details faded. Drawing small faces and figures on the margins. She recorded every strange sensation, every interaction with the dream characters, and every emotion that bubbled to the surface. "So, if I''m going crazy," Nora said out loud, laughing while writing the first memories in this diary. "At least I''ll do that in a proper way, and leave thorough documentation for my shrinks." As if that wasn''t enough, Nora meticulously recorded the times she went to sleep, the encounters she experienced, the variety of characters she met, and the intensity of each interaction. The patterns were undeniable. When Nora stuck to a healthy routine¡ªearly nights, clean eating, and exercise¡ªher dreams became more vivid, and her connection to the foxkin grew stronger. Nights when she stayed up late or let stress consume her led to chaotic, less coherent dreams. It was like the dream world rewarded her for taking care of herself. Finally, Nora found at least some sense of control. And not only over her dreams but also over her life in general. And that stability was lacking since even before one of the first unusual dreams came to her a couple of weeks earlier. Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings. Nora tapped her pen against her lips, staring at the patterns emerging in her journal. "Either my subconscious has become my personal health coach, or something else is at work here." A chill ran down her spine. "What if I''m not the one in control?" Still, if for a moment Nora considered this dream manipulation the new norm, it had a lot of limitations. And it wasn''t like she planned to go to bed at three in the morning, ruining her healthy habits and daily routines only to test a hunch. Or should she try that? Nora flipped through her diary, tracing patterns with her fingertip. "I can change the scenery but not the story." She laughed, the sound hollow in her empty apartment. "Next I''ll be claiming I''ve found a portal to another world." Her laughter faded as she stared at the detailed sketches she''d made of the foxkin''s eyes. Frustrated but determined to gather additional experimental data, she sought even more unusual ways to prepare her mind and body before sleep, hoping to gain more control over her visions. Following a hunch, Nora booked a spa day, indulging in hot baths and a blissful head massage that left her body humming with relaxation. That night, as she sank into bed, she whispered a silent hope: "Let it work. Let me see her again." She was primed for an immersive experience. *** The air was alive when Nora opened her eyes. Sunlight filtered through the emerald canopy of a forest, painting the ground in shimmering patches of gold. The scent of moss and damp soil filled her lungs, grounding her in the surreal beauty of the dreamscape. She crouched, running her fingers through the dew-covered grass, marveling at how real it felt. This time, she definitely wasn''t just an observer. She had agency. Pushing herself to her feet, Nora strode forward, her steps confident yet cautious. The forest felt alive, not just with the rustle of leaves but with an underlying energy that thrummed beneath her feet. As she approached a sunlit glade, her breath caught. Under the shade of a massive oak sat the foxkin. Her black-and-white fur gleamed in the dappled light, and her golden eyes sparkled with mischief as she noticed Nora''s approach. The foxkin''s tail flicked lazily behind her, a hypnotic motion that matched her sly smile. With a playful glint in her eye, the¡ woman¡ gestured for Nora to sit near her. "Aren''t you sneaky?" she said, a smile playing on her foxy face, her voice rich and teasing. It wasn''t the first time people from Nora''s dreams addressed her. But before, most interactions ended there, after her presence was acknowledged. Now, it felt different¡ It was only the beginning¡ªthe first steps of something more profound. Slowly, Nora sank onto the grass. "Weren''t ordinary dreams enough for you?" the foxkin asked, cocking her head. Feeling a strange mixture of annoyance and curiosity, Nora shot back: "I can leave if I''m not expected here. But something tells me that you were waiting for me. And if so, why are you even surprised that I was looking for something more?" The foxkin''s eyes sparkled with a knowing look, and Nora felt a shiver of excitement. She realized that the boundaries between waking life and the world of dreams were beginning to blur, opening a doorway to possibilities she had never imagined. The world as she knew it was about to change forever. The scenery around her was no longer a passive backdrop. And she finally might have a say in what unfolded next, be the showrunner of her own story. "Oh, I am waiting for you, alright," said the foxkin woman. "But I wasn''t sure that you''d be able to get through. Let alone get here so soon!" She stopped, her gaze softening as she looked at Nora appraisingly and leaned closer to Nora''s ear. "I should say that this is an unusual situation for me as well," she whispered as if sharing a secret. "I''ve seen you before in my dreams, and there was this feeling of connection. Did you sense it as well? We have something in common. But I''m not yet sure what it is." The foxkin drew back and started playing with her gorgeous black and white tail. "Name is Sumi, by the way," she said. "And you?" "I''m Nora. Nice to meet you!" "This morning," Sumi continued, "I felt I had to be here. This powerful urge like if I didn''t drop everything and walk to this glade, something terrible would happen. And it''s bizarre. I never had any premonitions like that before. I don''t think anyone in my family ever had a similar experience. Before this day, it was only dreams, nothing more. But a meeting in the real world? That''s insane!" Nora''s chest constricted, each breath coming in shorter gasps. The ground beneath her seemed to tilt and spin as her vision narrowed to pinpricks. "Oh my god," she heard herself gasping, her voice sounding distant and unfamiliar to her own ears. Her fingernails dug into her palms, the sharp pain the only thing anchoring her to this strange reality. It was true, and the sensation was so real that she could almost forget she was dreaming. "Real world, you say," Nora commented as if she wasn''t talking about some fantasy. "But I''m sure I''m still dreaming. How is it even possible?" The foxkin woman smiled, her ears twitching playfully. "I know that you come from a different world," she said. "That much is obvious. Who else could have entered my dreams so intensely? But yes, this is a real world. For me and for many other people." Nora frowned, trying to make sense of the foxkin''s cryptic words. "What do you mean?" Sumi''s smile faded slightly, her tone becoming more serious. "This place isn''t just a dream," she said. "Well, maybe it was for you. But for me, it''s just my world where I was born and where I''ve lived my whole life. Generations of my ancestors were born here, made babies, and then I appeared. Somehow, you''ve been able to create a connection and now you''re here as well¡" A mix of excitement and disbelief washed over Nora. The idea of all the people she met in her dreams of the past weeks being more than mere figments of imagination was overwhelming. "How is that possible?" she asked. "I''m just an ordinary person." Sumi smiled and shook her head. "Do I look like a fountain of knowledge to you?" she exclaimed. Nora glanced around, taking in the vibrant colors, the surreal beauty of the forest, and the palpable sense of possibility. The allure of this place was undeniable, but so were the questions it raised. "But how¡? Just the previous night, I wasn''t able to control most of the things about my dreams," Nora said as if trying to prove something to Sumi. "Today, I have this conversation with you. It looks like some kind of progress but how can you be sure that I''m staying here?" Sumi''s gaze held a mixture of warmth and caution. "I don''t know. And I don''t know who can answer all of these questions for you," she said. "But I probably can help you with getting at least some answers." Nora''s heart pounded as she weighed her options. It was thrilling to explore a fantastical realm, uncover its mysteries, and perhaps even shape its destiny. But the unknown consequences loomed large. If she stayed here, would she even be able to see her home again? To return to her world? That is, even if staying here was an option. Back on Earth, she had lots of unfinished tasks and obligations. Her work. Her parents! What about being a responsible person? Before Nora could voice her thoughts, Sumi''s hand brushed against hers¡ªa jolt of energy shot through her, powerful and undeniable. A thrilling current surged through Nora''s body as if Sumi''s touch had awakened a primal energy deep within her. The ground beneath her seemed to pulse in response, the forest itself attuned to their connection. "Whoa!" Nora gasped. "What was that?" she whispered, her voice shaky. Sumi''s playful demeanor shifted to something more serious. She seemed to be as surprised as Nora by that surge of energy between them. Her gaze held Nora captive, her voice a soft, enticing murmur. "Take your time," she said, her fingers lingering against Nora''s. "The choice is yours, and it''s a significant one. But I can sense that you feel it: this realm has already begun to stir something deep within you. It''s part of you now." As Sumi''s words wrapped around her, Nora felt a sensual heat rise between them. The forest''s vibrant energy seemed to flow from Sumi''s touch, mingling with the growing desire that fluttered in Nora''s chest. She was drawn to Sumi, captivated by her presence and a promise of something more. Standing on the brink of a new reality, Nora felt her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and desire. She had always yearned for something beyond the ordinary. Everybody who knew how nerdy she was wouldn''t be surprised either. And now it seemed she had stumbled over something exciting in the most unbelievable of places. It was a whole magical journey that was only beginning. And the choices she made here would not only shape her dreams but the very fabric of both of their worlds. As Sumi''s hand lingered on hers, their fingers entwined for a brief, intimate moment. Nora felt a flush of warmth and excitement. There was a promise in Sumi''s touch, an unspoken invitation to explore not just the mysteries of this realm but the tantalizing connection growing between them. However, before Nora could fully immerse herself in the moment, the dream world began to waver. The vibrant colors of the clearing dulled, the ethereal glade blurred, and a strange pulling sensation tugged at Nora''s consciousness. "No¡! Wait¡!" Nora reached out instinctively, her fingers slipping through the thinning air as the forest and its inhabitants faded from her view. Chapter 2. Unexpected Release (E) Just a moment ago, a warm glow caressed Nora''s skin, and the gentle touch of a foxkin woman electrified and enticed her. But then, abruptly and without warning, she woke up in her bed. It was a dream, after all. A vivid, hyper-realistic, but only a dream. Or was it more than that? Nora''s breathing was quickened as the dream''s afterglow still hung in the air. It filled her with a warmth unlike anything she had ever experienced. She could feel her heart pounding and her body tingling with an otherworldly energy. As she slowly regained consciousness, Nora became fully aware that her encounter with the foxkin awakened something powerful in her. Never before she remembered her dreams in such detail. It was as if it was becoming¡ real. Nora felt shivers running up and down her spine, and goosebumps prickled on her skin from the thrill. Her trembling hand slid beneath the sheets, inching downward across her heated skin. Nora''s fingertips found the soft curls between her thighs, already damp with evidence of pleasure. The wetness there spoke of a powerful orgasm¡ªone that had shaken her from sleep. But something else lingered, something electric that pulsed through her core, demanding attention. Her inner muscles tightened of their own accord, preparing for another release. The need coiled within her like a spring wound too tight, impossible to ignore. She couldn''t resist any longer¡ªdidn''t want to. She gasped, and a low, husky moan poured from her, a sound so primal and uninhibited it sent shivers through the air. A sound that she would rather expect to hear from that cute foxkin. Nora covered her mouth with trembling fingers, her wide eyes reflecting disbelief in the moonlit room. Golden eyes¡ªSumi''s eyes¡ªflashed in her memory, and her body responded with a fresh wave of heat. "Am I really this aroused by a dream woman?" she whispered into the darkness. But that electrifying touch when their hands had met in the forest clearing... Nora''s skin still carried the memory, her nerve endings singing with it. There was something powerful here, something that transcended ordinary dreams. Something worth exploring. Her fingers found their way back to the slick folds of her sex, tentatively exploring the sensitive flesh. The touch sent waves of pleasure coursing through her system. Sumi''s voice from the dream echoed in her ears, whispering naughty words that made her shiver with delight. Nora moaned, this time softly, longingly, as she pressed two fingers inside herself, feeling every ripple and undulation of her walls around them. The sensation was overwhelming, almost too much to bear. It felt like she was on the verge of something bigger than just an orgasm¡ªit was primal, primordial even. She spread her legs wider and threw away the sheets, fully uncovering her naked body. Her passion needed more space for this newfound desire to unfurl within her. Her fingers moved faster, seeking that magical spot that would send her over the edge once again. The headboard banged against the wall in rhythm with her frantic movements, the sound punctuated by soft grunts of pleasure that escaped from deep within her throat. Nora''s hips bucked off the mattress in search of release, driven by this insatiable longing that seemed to consume every fiber of her being. With each thrust of her fingers inside herself, she felt as if she were connecting with something on a fundamental level. The raw core of passion that had always been hidden from view until now. The tension coiled tighter, her fingers working frantically. Almost there. Almost... Nora''s back arched off the mattress as lightning struck through her core. Her scream echoed off the walls as she came undone completely, surrendering to the force of yet another mind-shattering orgasm. Hot, honeyed fluid surged from deep within, soaking the already damp sheets beneath her trembling hips. Throbbing waves pulsed outward from her center, washing over every inch of her flushed skin. Each spasm carried Sumi''s name on her lips, the boundary between dream and reality crumbling with each shuddering breath. Finally, satiated and panting heavily, she collapsed back onto the bed, her fingers still twitching with the memory of her climax. As Nora caught her breath, she wondered at this newfound desire within her. Was this passionate beast hiding inside her all along, just waiting for release, or was it something new created by this dream connection? Nora''s stomach tightened again from the aftershocks rippling through her body, reminding her that she had even more profound depths of sensations to explore. But for now, she allowed herself a slow moment to simply breathe and relax into the contentment washing over her. A small smile appeared on her lips as she recalled Sumi''s presence. For an instant, there was desire again before rational thought returned fully. "Oh, well," she said out loud, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. "Two mind-blowing orgasms certainly beat any alarm clock." Her laughter echoed in the empty apartment¡ªwhen was the last time she''d laughed here? She rolled out of bed on unsteady legs, the ordinary prospect of work seeming almost absurd now. How could she focus on debugging code when her body still hummed with otherworldly pleasure? Her heart pounded with a cocktail of excitement, lingering lust, and something else¡ªanticipation. The thought of seeing Sumi again sent a fresh shiver across her sensitized skin. Tonight couldn''t come soon enough. Nora made her way to the bathroom on shaky legs, her body still buzzing with aftershocks. The first blast of cool water made her gasp, goosebumps racing across her heated skin. Then¡ªbliss. The cascade pounded against her shoulders, washing away sweat but not the memory of pleasure. Her nipples remained stiff and sensitive, each droplet striking them sending little jolts through her core. She watched, mesmerized, as rivulets traced the contours of her body, following paths down her breasts, across her stomach, between her thighs¡ªlike invisible fingers continuing what her dream had started. She glided her palms over soapy skin, the boundary blurring between cleansing and caressing. Her fingertips traced where dream-memory and physical reality mingled¡ªsoap and her own lingering arousal creating a slick, intoxicating mixture. A simple touch against her collarbone sent an unexpected shiver cascading down her spine. Even as she patted herself dry with a towel, her nerve endings still sang, hypersensitized to every sensation. The rough terry cloth against her inner thigh made her breath catch¡ªher body refusing to return to its normal state of dormancy. It was as if Sumi''s touch had awakened something primal in her, switching all her senses to overdrive. Nora leaned against the bathroom counter, studying her flushed reflection. The woman staring back looked different somehow¡ªeyes brighter, lips fuller, skin glowing. Never before had she experienced such prolonged, earth-shattering pleasure. Past lovers had tried and failed to bring her to such heights. Even her own practiced touch during lonely nights had never unleashed anything close to what had just happened. Whatever connection was budding between her and that foxkin transcended physical boundaries. Reality beckoned with cold persistence. The harsh of her smart watch cut through her pleasant haze¡ª5:47. Night was surrendering to dawn, her dream slipping further away with each passing minute. Nora pressed her forehead against the cool bathroom mirror, watching daylight begin to infiltrate through her blinds. The light brought questions with it, unwelcome companions to her afterglow. What did this mean for her waking life? How could she possibly bridge the gap between sterile reality and the vibrant, seductive dream she''d just been torn from? The Thornfield project deadline loomed over her, its weight crushing down on her shoulders. She couldn''t just drop everything and chase dreams. Her team depended on her. Her career, her apartment, her entire constructed life demanded her return. She met her own eyes in the mirror. "Or could I?" The whispered question hung in the steamy bathroom, dangerous and tempting. "Well, fuck it!" The words burst from her with surprising force. "Time to leave for work!" She slammed her palm against the countertop, the sharp sting anchoring her firmly back in reality. *** The day at work was a study in contradiction. Nora floated through meetings with an uncharacteristic smile, her colleagues raising eyebrows at her sudden brightness. Even Jenkins'' passive-aggressive emails about the API documentation couldn''t penetrate her bubble of lingering euphoria. Yet beneath this elation ran an undercurrent of restlessness¡ªa constantly ticking clock counting down the hours until she could return to bed, to sleep, to her. Cursor blinked accusingly on the screen, having barely moved in twenty minutes. Every line of code she wrote was interrupted by flashes of golden eyes and black-and-white fur, Nora''s fingers stilling on the keyboard as she relived that electric moment when their hands had touched. Focus became a battle she was slowly losing. Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. Now, Nora was consumed with an almost desperate longing to return. Her fingers trembled as she dialed her preferred spa, only to hear the receptionist''s apologetic voice informing her they were fully booked. A cold knot formed in her stomach. What if she couldn''t get back? What if Sumi was waiting for her? She paced her apartment, gathering every scented candle, bath bomb, and relaxation technique she could think of. Tonight, she would recreate that portal by sheer force of will if necessary. One thing gnawed at her resolve, though. "Am I really prepping myself for a date with an imaginary woman?" she thought while lying in a warm bath with the surface of the water covered with pleasantly smelling foam. "How did I get here? Am I going mad? Is it my mediocre love life playing mind tricks?" Hours later, at home, Nora stared at her bedroom ceiling, the sheets twisted around her legs like restraints. Nothing. No golden-eyed foxkin, no moonlit clearing¡ªnothing but the mundane darkness of her bedroom. The next night brought the same result, and the next, and the next. Her frustration morphed into a physical ache, a hollowness expanding beneath her ribs. She followed her notes with scientific precision¡ªsame tea, same meditation, same sleeping position¡ªyet the door to that other world remained firmly shut. She clawed at her pillow, tears of frustration wetting the fabric. The tantalizing world that had felt so real now seemed cruelly beyond her reach, like a lover who had ghosted her without explanation. Nora poured over her dream diary for hours, scrutinizing every detail of her routines. She meticulously replicated her schedule down to the minute: the precise time she went to bed, the exact temperature of her room, and the relaxation techniques she employed. But still, nothing seemed to work. The vivid, sensual dreamscapes were now stubbornly inaccessible. Even the more bizarre dreams from previous restless nights refused to come to her. The frustration only built up with each passing night as Nora desperately sought to re-enter the magical realm. On a particularly restless day, Nora decided to repeat her most successful routine in full. Luckily, she prepared in advance and found an appointment at her favorite spa. This time, though, she decided to go all in, taking a day off at work. "I deserve that," Nora thought. "I work hard, I earn enough money to allow myself another day at spa." But the main hope, of course, was that the combination of relaxation and indulgence might finally unlock the gateway to the dream world. Still, when Nora arrived at the spa, her anticipation was tempered by a nagging doubt. The serene atmosphere and soothing scents worked their magic, and she felt her muscles relax under the expert hands of the masseuse. Her favorite part was the head massage, and she closed her eyes, willing the tranquility to seep into her subconscious. But would that be enough? At home as she settled into her bed, Nora felt a spark of hope. Indeed, this would be the night she broke through the barrier and found her way back to the dream world. But as the hours ticked by, Nora lay awake, staring at the ceiling, her mind a frustratingly blank canvas. There were no whispering trees, no fantastical beings, and no tantalizing touch of Sumi to guide her. Nora closed her eyes tighter, trying to summon the images from her last dream. Still, the harder she pushed herself, the more elusive this distant realm seemed to be. Her sleep, when it finally came, was restless and unsatisfying. Nora drifted in and out of shallow, unremarkable dreams¡ªnothing like the vivid adventures she had experienced before. Morning arrived too soon, and she woke up feeling groggy and irritable, her mind heavy with the fear of loss. The previous day''s relaxing experience was a complete write-off. *** It wasn''t the last time she attempted to reach that blissful state. But with no definite results, Nora''s frustration grew with each passing night. She tried everything¡ªexperimenting with different sleep positions, altering her diet, and even using guided meditation apps to help her relax and focus simultaneously. But, alas! Despite her efforts, the dream world remained frustratingly out of reach, making her longing for Sumi only more intense. Even more sleepless nights later, Nora''s finger hovered over her phone, trembling with the admission of defeat. She pressed Dr. Sharma''s contact, requesting an emergency session. The next afternoon found her sinking into the familiar embrace of the therapist''s overstuffed armchair, the soft ticking of the whimsical corner clock marking each second of her growing obsession. The room smelled of sandalwood and professional concern¡ªa sterile contrast to the wild, earthy scent of her dream forest. Her leg bounced uncontrollably as she waited to confess that she was losing her mind over a woman who didn''t exist. Nora recounted her dreams and futile attempts to return to them, hoping that her therapist might offer some insight or technique that could break her mental block. And then, after a short hesitation, she opened up about her encounter with Sumi. "I''m not going mad, am I?" Nora asked with deep concern in her voice. "All of that can''t be real!" The therapist listened intently, her expression thoughtful. "Let''s not put any labels on the situation. Dreams can be tricky, especially when they''re so vivid," she said. "It sounds like you''ve built a strong association with a specific routine, but sometimes our subconscious needs more than just repetition to unlock certain doors." "But it was so real," Nora insisted, her voice tinged with frustration. "I could feel everything¡ªthe forest, Sumi''s touch. And even more. I can''t just let that go." Nora blushed, remembering that electrifying connection she only sensed for a brief moment. Nodding sympathetically, the therapist agreed: "I understand. But perhaps it''s not just about recreating the exact circumstances. It may be about finding a specific mood," she said. "Sometimes, it''s about allowing your mind to wander freely, without the pressure of trying to control the outcome. Have you tried just letting go and seeing where your dreams take you?" Nora sighed, feeling a mix of frustration and exhaustion. The rest of the session didn''t help her figure out exactly what she had to do. The therapist only gave vague recommendations and deflected some of Nora''s questions and doubts back to her. Still, there was one thing in the therapist''s words that stuck in Nora''s mind. Since the beginning of these vivid dreams, she had always approached them with scientific rigor, meticulously recording every detail. The idea of relinquishing control was daunting, yet she couldn''t deny that her methods were failing. Returning home that night, Nora decided to follow that therapist''s advice. She abandoned her detailed notes and routines, instead opting for a simpler, more relaxed approach. Nora dimmed the lights, played her favorite music, and let her mind drift as she climbed into bed. For the first time in weeks, she didn''t focus on trying to summon the dream world. Instead, she allowed her thoughts to meander, hoping that a more relaxed state might be the key to breaking through her mental block. As sleep enveloped her, Nora felt a gentle tug at the edges of her consciousness, a faint whisper of something familiar. Something, she felt before. The sensation was subtle but unmistakable, a delicate thread connecting her to the dream world she longed to return to. Nora found herself drifting, her mind teetering on the brink of that elusive realm. But as soon as Nora focused on her hope that Sumi would meet her with her soft touch, she realized that it was something much more powerful and almost inhuman. She hovered in that liminal space between wakefulness and dreams, her consciousness floating untethered. Then¡ªa shift. The air around her seemed to thicken, pressing against her skin with gentle insistence. Something had changed. Someone was there, observing her from just beyond the veil of perception. A voice whispered directly into her mind, bypassing her ears entirely: "Nora, fill yourself with Love!" The words vibrated through her very being. "You have to make a conscious choice. You have to choose this path! I need you..." The voice wasn''t Sumi''s¡ªit carried weight and age, power and urgency. It reached into her chest and squeezed, demanding a response she didn''t know how to give. The connection wavered as if something prevented Nora from getting the whole message. Startled, Nora opened her eyes. The room was blanketed with darkness, the faint glow of streetlights barely filtering through the curtains. Nora sat up, her heart racing. She tried to shake off the eerie feeling that lingered like a shadow, but it remained somewhere really close but still out of touch. "Is there someone there?" Nora whispered into the silence, her voice trembling slightly. There was no response, only the quiet hum of the night outside her window. Nora glanced at the clock. It was late. Or maybe it was more correct to say that it was already very early in the morning. There was not enough time left for her to get enough sleep before the new day. With a deep sigh, Nora laid back down, determined to push aside her unease and reclaim at least some of the rest she desperately needed but understanding that she probably wouldn''t be able to fall asleep once again. However, the exhaustion finally claimed her. Still, the sleep was tumultuous. She couldn''t shake the unsettling notion that something beyond her understanding was at play, keeping her from the dreams that had once welcomed her so warmly. As days bled into nights and back again, Nora found herself trapped in a twilight existence¡ªtoo exhausted to function in her waking life, yet unable to reach the dream world she craved. When fragments of sleep did come, they brought disturbing new elements: whispered voices arguing over her fate, shadowy presences that circled her consciousness like hungry predators. Some voices called to her directly: "Your path lies with us..." "The Shrines await you..." "Choose, Chosen One..." Others hissed and spat, working frantically to block her passage: "She must not cross again... The balance..." Nora began to miss meetings at work. Her code grew sloppy. Dark circles formed permanent residences beneath her bloodshot eyes. The meticulous routine that had once defined her existence lay shattered at her feet, replaced by a single desperate goal: to reclaim not just the vivid world and its golden-eyed inhabitant, but the simple mercy of unconsciousness. Each night stretched longer than the last¡ªan endless expanse of ceiling-staring and sheet-twisting. Her pillow became damp with frustrated tears as she sensed the door to that other reality just beyond her reach, barred by forces she couldn''t begin to comprehend. Something was happening¡ªa battle being waged over her, with her as both prize and battlefield. And she was powerless to influence the outcome. Chapter 3. Echoes of the Wild (E - on Patreon) The fluorescent lights of the office buzzed overhead, their harsh glare highlighting the dark circles under Nora''s eyes. She hadn''t noticed when her colleagues'' concerned whispers had started, but she felt their stares following her as she stumbled through another day at the office. Their worried glances and gentle offers of help¡ªa coffee, a ride home, someone to talk to¡ªwere well-intentioned but futile. How could they possibly understand what she was going through when she barely understood it herself? Nora hunched over her keyboard, squinting as the lines of code swam before her eyes, characters shifting and rearranging themselves like living things. Her fingers hovered over the keys, trembling slightly¡ªwhen had they started doing that? Sleep had become a cruel game of chance. Some nights, unconsciousness claimed her the moment her head hit the pillow; others, she''d lie awake until dawn, her mind racing with whispered voices and golden eyes that hovered just beyond reach. The boundaries between wakefulness and dreams had blurred, leaving her stranded in a perpetual twilight state. Nora sat at her desk, but instead of working, she was reviewing notes from past nocturnal visions when a wave of drowsiness washed over her. She fell into a dream right away. Right there, in the office. This time, she appeared in a place of total darkness. But at the same time, she felt like she was at a concert of a doom metal group. Deep vibrations were passing through her body, bringing the feeling of total alienness. As abruptly as it began, as unexpectedly, the dream has ended. As if somebody turned off the switch. "Well, if you are trying to recruit me, maybe use a language I know?" she whispered in the emptiness, "And either help me to get through or fuck off!" "Nora, are you alright?" asked Pete, her boss. He was standing right in front of her desk, looking at her with concern. Nora promptly sat straight, trying to put her disheveled ginger hair in order. She felt several keyboard buttons imprinted on her cheek, where her head fell on her desk. "Ahhhh¡" she mumbled nervously. "Sorry, Pete. I had some sleep issues in the past few weeks. I went to my therapist several times, but nothing seems to help¡" Pete leaned against her desk, his brow furrowed with genuine concern. "You know what, Nora?" His voice was gentle but firm, the tone he reserved for when he needed her to really listen. "You''ve been carrying this team for months. I''ve watched you push yourself past any reasonable limit." He held up a hand when she started to protest. "Take a week off. That''s not a suggestion¡ªit''s an order. Get some actual rest, put your head in the right place." His eyes softened. "And come back when you''re ready, not when you think we need you back. We''ll manage." The kindness in his voice nearly broke her more than the exhaustion had. "Thanks, Pete!" said Nora after a brief hesitation. "That''s very kind of you. I should have probably figured out that I need a vacation or something. I just wanted to tie up all the ends properly." "Don''t worry about that," said Pete. "We will figure out how to get through this week. Take your time." *** And that''s how Nora found herself on a train to a small town a few hours away from the place she called home for the past five years. She moved away from her parents when she began studying at the university. Every year, she spent less and less time in her parents'' house. But that''s life, right? At least all the modern technologies allowed them to see each other as often as they wanted through video calls and photos on social accounts. This abrupt homecoming unleashed a tidal wave of parental nurturing that Nora hadn''t experienced since adolescence. Her childhood room awaited her like a time capsule, preserved with almost museum-like care¡ªthe same faded band posters, the same stuffed bear with the missing eye perched on the pillow. Her mother practically materialized with her comfiest clothes before she could even ask, while her father quietly placed a steaming mug of cocoa on her nightstand, made precisely the way she liked it. Each day unfolded in a gentle rhythm of favorite foods appearing without request, board games with rules they all pretended to remember, and movies they''d seen a dozen times before. The familiarity should have been comforting, but it made the strangeness inside her feel even more alien. She immersed herself in memories. Console games from her childhood, music, and old posters on the walls. Browsing through her old CDs, she recounted that strange dream in total darkness. Maybe the code was hidden somewhere in these old records? The details and rhythms from that unexpected dream had already faded out. Still, she hoped she might revive some of them just by listening to some of her old heavy metal records. But alas, while she was able to recover some sensations, it didn''t help her fully immerse herself into a similar dream. Even worse, when she listened to that music before sleep, she''d tumble for hours, without any hope for rest. Time passed swiftly, as it always does when you enjoy it, and this brief vacation at her parents'' house was coming to an end. Nora felt a bit more relaxed and connected to her childhood. Still, while it brought some peace of mind to her and restored her sleep patterns, she wasn''t getting any closer to reconnecting with Sumi. That evening before the final weekend, Nora''s mother paused in the doorway, a familiar silhouette backlit by the hall light. "Do you remember our hikes?" she asked, her voice soft with nostalgia. "Those weekend walks when you were little, and later..." She smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkling. "When you grew older, you''d venture out alone and come back transformed¡ªcheeks flushed, eyes bright, laughing in a way you never did otherwise." She sat on the edge of Nora''s bed, the mattress dipping slightly. "Maybe that''s what you need now¡ªto find your balance again. Fill yourself with love of nature, as you did before. They''ve cleaned up the National Park since you moved away. The old trails are still there, but better maintained. It''s magical, especially this time of year." Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings. Something in her mother''s words resonated with Nora, striking a chord that vibrated in harmony with the whispers from her dreams. And of course, Nora''s mother was right, as it often happened. That was a splendid idea, and Nora was surprised she hadn''t thought about it herself. Literally, a chance to ground herself. Remove all the noise. Not wasting any time, Nora''s parents found all the gear she could need for a weekend hike in their basement. They gave her enough food and water to survive the two days in the wild. And instructed about the changes made over the years to the local paths. Finally, as the vacation was ending and there wasn''t much time left, they decided that Nora would get to the train station Monday morning to head straight from the National Park to the city. She''d either keep the gear in her city apartment or return it during her next visit. But this way, she''d have a chance to spend more time in the wild. The moment Nora''s boots touched the trail, something electric shot through her¡ªa jolt of recognition that had nothing to do with memory and everything to do with instinct. The forest embraced her, the familiar scents of pine and rich earth filling her lungs while birdsong created a symphony overhead. But beneath that ordinary beauty lurked something else¡ªsomething that pulsed just below the surface of perception. The trees seemed to whisper as she passed, their ancient voices almost familiar, like an echo of Sumi''s world. Each step deeper into the forest heightened the sensation as if she were walking along the border between two realities, the veil between them growing thinner with every footfall. Maybe she just imagined that. But it felt like she was losing the weight of years spent in a bustling city, buried under the stress of university and demanding work. It lifted from her shoulders as soon as she stepped under the canopy of the trees of the National Park. There, she was transported to a time when she was ten years younger and much more carefree. After a few hours of walking, the trail widened unexpectedly, opening into a sun-dappled glade that seemed to be waiting just for her. Nora stopped, transfixed by the perfect circle of emerald grass surrounded by towering sentinels of pine and oak. Sunlight spilled through the canopy in visible rays, illuminating dancing motes of pollen and seed fluff. Something about this place felt significant. It was charged with potential. Nora''s hands moved automatically, setting up her small gas stove while her senses remained attuned to her surroundings. The sizzle of meat hitting the hot pan and the steam rising from simmering vegetables created an aromatic cloud that mingled with the forest''s primal perfume. The ordinary act of cooking in this extraordinary place felt like a ritual, a communion between her world and something wilder, older, more magical. *** While the soft moonlight bathed the forest floor, nothing out of the ordinary occurred. The night passed for Nora in a peaceful slumber, devoid of any dreams or disturbances. Dawn arrived with gentle insistence, golden light filtering through leaves to dance across Nora''s closed eyelids. She woke with a clarity she hadn''t experienced in weeks¡ªperhaps months. Nora''s mind was finally quiet, the voices that had haunted her dreams blessedly silent. As she emerged from her tent, the forest greeted her with a symphony of morning sounds¡ªbirds calling to one another, the rustling of small creatures in the underbrush, the persistent melody of the stream. She filled her lungs with air so pure it almost hurt, rich with pine resin, damp earth, and something indefinable that seemed to vibrate with life itself. "Thank you, Pete," Nora whispered to the trees, a smile tugging at her lips. "Thank you, mom," she added. The tightness in her chest had loosened for the first time since her dreams began. Here, cradled in nature''s embrace, Nora felt her fragmented self beginning to reintegrate, reconnecting not just with the world around her but with something essential within. With a granola bar in one hand and a water bottle in the other, she trekked through the dense forest. Nora started with familiar trails and followed her parents'' instructions. However, even if she had spent countless hours wandering these woods as a child and young adult, there were still hidden pockets she had yet to discover in this expansive nature reserve. As Nora ventured deeper into the forest, the trees grew taller and thicker, blocking out more sunlight. The dense canopy above cast a dappled pattern of light and shadow on the forest floor as if nature had created its own stained glass windows. These scenes triggered a feeble memory in Nora''s mind. Still, she couldn''t quite put her finger on what it was. She felt a strange sense of familiarity, a blend of past experiences and recent days spent in the small town and nature. The earthy scents of moss and soil, damp because of the morning dew, filled her nose, mingling with the crisp freshness of the air. Every step she took felt like a journey back in time to a place where magic and wonder still existed. Setting up for lunch, Nora chose a different glade. She had to make some progress, getting closer to the train station every day. By that moment, Nora had already walked a reasonable distance from her parents'' house, and her feet ached with each step. Even if hiking was Nora''s favorite activity before, she wasn''t used to this sort of long walks anymore. But at the same time, she couldn''t help the smile on her face as she trekked through the lush forest. The sunlight streaming through the trees warmed her skin, filled her with vitality, and brought a profound sense of harmony with the natural world around her. Despite the physical exhaustion, she felt renewed and alive. Exhausted, she found a patch of soft grass on the hill and lay down, letting the warm sun kiss her skin. A light breeze rustled through the trees, carrying the sweet scent of wildflowers. She closed her eyes and let herself fully relax before continuing with her day. The solitude enveloped her like a second skin. Hours had passed without a single human sound reaching her ears¡ªno distant voices, no planes overhead, no reminders of the world she''d left behind. The forest had accepted her, wrapping her in a cocoon of isolation that felt not lonely but liberating. Sunlight poured into the small meadow she''d discovered, a hidden pocket of warmth nestled within the cool shadows of the forest. An urge seized her, primal and impossible to ignore¡ªto shed the barriers between herself and this place, to feel the sun''s caress on her bare skin. Her fingers moved to her shirt buttons before conscious thought caught up. What was she doing? Yet the impulse persisted¡ªa yearning that seemed to originate not from within her but from the land itself. Hesitantly, she slipped off her hiking shirt, then her boots and socks, her pants following. The air kissed her exposed skin, unexpectedly sensual. Nora stood in only her underwear, heart racing¡ªpartly from nerves, partly from something deeper, more primal. The meadow remained empty, and the trees were her only witnesses. A foreign boldness possessed her. When would she have another chance like this? When would she feel this alive, this connected to something greater than herself? Her fingers trembled slightly as they moved to the clasp of her bra. Some of the spicier content is available to my subscribers on Patreon. You''ll have access to all published chapters there. (E - on Patreon) The realization hit her like cold water¡ªwhat was she doing? Heat flooded her cheeks as shame and self-consciousness crashed over her. This wasn''t like her at all. She didn''t do things like this¡ªlying naked in broad daylight, touching herself in a public park, no matter how secluded it seemed. These trails had been part of her childhood, places of innocent exploration and family hikes. What had gotten into her? But even as the rational part of her mind protested, something deeper resonated with this wild impulse. Hadn''t she come here precisely to reconnect? To find herself again? "Connecting with nature!" Nora breathed, the revelation washing over her. "Connecting with myself! Yes, that''s what I''ve been doing all week." The truth of it resonated through her body like a tuning fork struck against a stone. She had reconnected with the world around her, with her parents, even with parts of herself¡ªbut always with the past. Never with her present reality, her current self with all its needs and desires. Warmth was spreading from within her, from the area near her pubic mound. It lured her and willed her to explore her body like never before. The forest seemed to hold its breath around her, waiting, encouraging. Nora touched her flushed cheeks, her fingertips cool against her heated skin. She traced a slow path downward, discovering herself anew. Her nipples stood stiff against her exploring touch, her breasts fuller than she remembered, hypersensitive to even the lightest caress. Something was changing within her¡ªa new awareness and heightened sensitivity that transformed each touch into an exquisite sensation. With a decisive motion, she ventured lower. Something had shifted. The meadow remained¡ªsoft grass beneath her still-trembling body, sunlight filtering down through leaves¡ªbut the quality of the light had changed. It was more golden now, more luminous as if each ray carried its own consciousness. The trees surrounding her stood impossibly taller, their bark no longer merely brown but intricate with swirling patterns that seemed to move when she wasn''t looking directly at them. Colors vibrated with intensity, sounds layered upon each other in complex harmonies, scents told stories in a language just beyond her comprehension. She hadn''t moved physically¡ªher body still lay in the same position on the same meadow floor, the imprint of her form still fresh in the crushed grass¡ªand yet, everything had transformed. The very air tasted different on her tongue, sweeter and more vibrant, carrying whispers of exotic spices and flowering plants she couldn''t name. It was as if the boundary between worlds had thinned to nothing in her moment of complete abandon, allowing her to slip through as effortlessly as passing through a veil of water. Nora''s fingers dug into the soil, seeking something solid to anchor her in this altered reality. The earth felt the same yet different¡ªmore responsive somehow, as if it recognized her touch. Slowly, the truth crystallized in her mind: this was unmistakably the forest of her dreams, the realm where Sumi existed. The realization dawned gradually, then crashed over her all at once: she had crossed over. The air pulsed with life, rich with the scent of earth and green growing things¡ªfamiliar, yet heightened, as if she were experiencing them with new senses. Sunlight filtered through the canopy in visible beams, turning dust motes into constellations of floating gold. This forest breathed in a way the one she''d left behind did not¡ªit was aware, watching, waiting. Nora''s heart hammered against her ribs as she scanned the surrounding trees, hope and fear warring within her. Had she truly crossed over, or was this merely another dream, another cruelly vivid fantasy that would evaporate upon waking? A flash of movement caught her eye¡ªnot random but purposeful. The underbrush rustled and parted. And there she was. Sumi emerged into the clearing like a spirit materializing from myth, her black-and-white fur gleaming with an inner luminescence that seemed to bend the light around her. Her fox-like ears twitched forward, focusing on Nora with laser precision. Those golden eyes¡ªthe eyes that had haunted Nora for weeks¡ªsparkled with recognition, surprise, and something more profound that made Nora''s breath catch in her throat. Sumi''s lips curved into that familiar, knowing smile that had tangled itself around Nora''s dreams and refused to let go. Sumi''s gaze swept over Nora''s bare form, lingering on the subtle sheen of sweat and the unmistakable flush of satisfaction that still adorned the woman''s skin like a sign of the lover''s caress. The foxkin purred, her voice teasing as a sly smile played at the corners of her lips. "Well, well, someone''s been making the forest jealous," she said, her words laced with playful mockery, tail swishing mischievously behind her. "Such a shame I wasn''t here to join in. Or at least to watch." She tilted her head, golden eyes sparkling with undisguised desire. "Imagine all the delicious ways we could''ve played together under these trees." She circled Nora slowly, her movements soft and deliberate. "I love your scent, by the way!" she practically purred, inhaling deeply with evident pleasure. "It betrays your recent... activities. Such a heady mix of sweat and musk that lingers even from here." She leaned in, her breath warm against Nora''s ear. "Makes me wonder just how much fun you had without me. Did you think of me while you touched yourself?" Nora felt a blush creep up her cheeks, a warmth spreading through her that had nothing to do with the sun. Her mind quickly calculated her options¡ªdenial? embarrassment? owning it?¡ªbefore settling on honesty. "You caught me," she said, her voice catching between straight acknowledgment and unmistakable desire. "But objectively speaking, can you blame me? The forest has its... charms." Sumi stepped closer, her movements fluid and soft, each step deliberately slow as if stalking prey. The space between them charged with electricity. "Oh, I can see that," she murmured, her fingers brushing lightly against Nora''s leg, leaving goosebumps in their wake. "Though I must admit, I prefer a more... interactive experience." Her tongue darted across her lips briefly. "Just imagine, wouldn''t it have been better with some help? My hands are quite skilled, you know." Nora''s pulse quickened, her body reacting to the suggestive undertones of Sumi''s words. "Is that an invitation?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Sumi''s laughter was a melodious whisper on the breeze. "Only if you''re ready to handle a foxkin who knows exactly where to touch to make you purr," she retorted, her eyes gleaming with challenge. Nora sat up, feeling the cool grass beneath her and the gentle kiss of the wind on her skin. "I think I''ve proven I can handle quite a bit," she said, her tone matching Sumi''s playfulness. "But maybe you should show me what I''ve been missing." Sumi''s smile widened, and she leaned in close, her breath warm against Nora''s ear. "With pleasure, but we need to help you settle in first." She measured Nora with her gaze. "And probably find you some clothes." Nora gasped, only now figuring out that all of her gear was left somewhere far-far away. Forgetting all the playfulness of the previous moments, she covered her sex with her hand, smiling shyly at Sumi. This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author''s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. "Right," said Nora. "Clothes! And all my stuff! Everything is left in the park back home!" "Now, now," said Sumi. "Everything will be alright. And there''s no need to cover up. Every inch of you is delightful. I''ve seen it all and I thoroughly enjoyed the view!" As the initial joy of their reunion began to fade, Nora''s heart plummeted with a sickening realization. A tsunami of anxiety crashed over her, drowning out any sense of peace. She couldn''t breathe, her chest constricted as she began to hyperventilate, each gasp coming faster and more desperate than the last. "Oh my god!" she cried out, feeling the weight of everything she left behind crashing down on her. Her hands trembled uncontrollably, as she moved them to her mouth. "I''m so stupid! My clothes aren''t even the biggest of my problems! My work, my apartment...my parents!" Panic rose in her throat like bile, suffocating Nora. Her lungs seemed to shrink, each breath coming shorter and more painful than the last. Her vision tunneled, the lush forest around her blurring into smears of green and brown as her heartbeat thundered in her ears with such intensity that she could feel each pulse throbbing in her temples. The ground beneath her seemed to pitch and roll like a ship in a storm. Sumi''s expression instantly shifted from playful to concerned, her ears flattening against her head in alarm. She knelt beside Nora, her movements no longer seductive but urgent and protective. She placed a calming hand on Nora''s shoulders, her touch now gentle and steadying. "Breathe, Nora," she said softly, her golden eyes wide with genuine worry. "It''s alright. I''m sorry if I overdone it with the innuendos¡" Her tail swished anxiously behind her. "Sometimes I just can''t help myself and my nature spills out. We''ll figure your problems out together." She squeezed Nora''s shoulder reassuringly, her clawed fingers careful not to press too hard against the human''s delicate skin. Nora tried to focus on Sumi''s soothing presence, but the fear gnawed at her. "What if they think something happened to me?" she asked. "And they will! They will be devastated. What if they call the police? I can''t just disappear without a trace!" Sumi gently turned Nora to face her, her fox-like eyes filled with reassurance. "Listen to me," she said firmly. "You''re safe here. I don''t know how to communicate with your world. But you have bridged the distance once, I''m sure you''ll be able to do that again! For now, just take deep breaths and try to calm down." Nora nodded, attempting to slow her breathing as Sumi guided her through each inhale and exhale. The tranquil setting of the forest began to seep back into her consciousness, and the immediate panic started to fade. "I... I don''t know what came over me," Nora said after a moment, her voice trembling slightly. "It just hit me all at once." "It''s alright," Sumi replied, stroking Nora''s hair gently. "Well, it''s obviously not perfect. All these changes can be overwhelming. I don''t know how I would have reacted if I were in your place. But you''re not alone in this. I''m here with you, and we''ll face whatever comes together." Nora felt her racing heart slow as Sumi''s words washed over her. There was something in the foxkin''s touch that anchored her, a steadiness that seemed to flow from those delicate fingers directly into Nora''s frantic mind. The panic was still there, hovering at the edges of her consciousness, but Sumi''s presence created a small island of calm in the storm of her thoughts. How strange that a creature she''d first met in dreams could now be her only lifeline in this bewildering reality. "Thank you, Sumi," Nora whispered, leaning into the comforting touch. "I don''t know what I''d do without you. And I don''t know why I even deserve your attention and help. But thank you." "You don''t have to thank me," Sumi said softly. "But now, let''s find you something to wear, and then we can start figuring out how to pass a message to your parents. One step at a time." Nora nodded, feeling a glimmer of hope. "One step at a time," she echoed. Seeing that Nora wasn''t as panicked anymore, Sumi rummaged through her backpack, her clawed fingers deftly sorting through her supplies. She pulled out a thick, fleece blanket, its fabric worn soft from years of use, carrying the faint scent of herbs and something sweet and unfamiliar¡ªa smell that was uniquely Sumi''s. "Here," she said. "I don''t have any spare clothes, I didn''t know I''d have to come prepared this way. But I usually take this blanket with me when I leave home for a long time. It should comfort you." She wrapped the blanket around Nora''s trembling form and hugged the woman. "Everything is going to be alright," said Sumi. *** Sumi worked with practiced efficiency, her movements fluid and purposeful as she gathered a few large stones to form a perfect circle. Her hands moved in a blur, arranging kindling and branches in a precise pattern that spoke of years spent mastering woodland survival. With a flick of her wrist, she sparked her lighter, and the flame caught instantly as if the wood itself were eager to please her. Soon, flames danced merrily within the stone ring, and a pot of water caught the firelight as it began to simmer, sending tendrils of steam spiraling upward into the cooling evening air. "Nora," she said softly. "I think you should know that. I''ve been trying to reach you. All these weeks, I felt a feeble connection but something stopped me from getting through." Sumi handed Nora a mug of herbal tea and sat beside her on the log. "I know what you are talking about," said Nora. "These were the hardest weeks of my life. I tried everything to get back to this glade. There were many other presences there, in my dreams, but nothing concrete. Nothing I could figure out. I was sure I''ve been losing my mind¡!" She looked at Sumi searching for support and understanding. "Now, I''m not even sure what was real and what was just a consequence of those long sleepless nights," Nora continued. "Something tried to speak to me¡ Once, they told me I had to fill myself with Love. And it felt like Love with a capital L, you know? Things just can''t get any more ridiculous than that, can they? Was it some sort of missionary shit where they try to give you a book that has all answers?!?" Nora started laughing helplessly. Sumi''s eyes widened, and her mouth dropped open in disbelief. She shook her head and whispered something inaudible to herself. "You are scaring me," said Nora. "What is it?" "It can''t be...!" Sumi said, now loud enough for Nora to hear. "I felt the spark between us... And the way our hands brushed during our first encounter... It''s impossible." This didn''t dissolve Nora''s worries, though. "Sumi, please stop mumbling," she said. "I don''t understand. Wasn''t that just some projection of my tired consciousness?" "Don''t you see," said Sumi. "So many of the things you experienced recently can be perceived in the same way? No, it''s something much more serious, and I''m a bit scared if I''m being honest." "Let me guess, there''s also a God of Love?" Nora asked with a wry smile, the sarcasm a flimsy shield against the madness of her situation. "All-powerful and he plays with people''s fates, not caring much if mortals get damaged in the process?" Sumi looked at Nora in disbelief, her pupils dilating until her golden eyes were nearly black. She slowly shook her head, and her ears perked forward with such intensity that they quivered with tension. "No, not a god..." she said, her voice dropping to a superstitious whisper that seemed to make the very air between them grow still. The campfire dimmed for a heartbeat as if bowing in reverence. "But there is a Goddess of Love." "Now you are just pulling my leg!" Nora exclaimed. Yet the deadly serious expression on Sumi''s face made her stomach tighten with apprehension. "I''m sure," Sumi began explaining, "that it was the Goddess who put me on my way to meet you. And I''m grateful to her! It was a truly fateful moment!" "So, you are being serious," said Nora, a frown on her face. "Well¡ Damn. Should I stop making all the blasphemous jokes from this moment on? Will some powerful being strike me with lightning for my atheistic stance?" "I don''t think so," said Sumi. "The Gods of this world aren''t that petty. They have some interests and from time to time may bless a mortal to use them in one way or another. I can''t tell you much, I don''t normally have any business with all that divine stuff. Well, I didn''t normally have to deal with that. Not anymore, obviously, now, that I have you." Sumi paused and softly patted Nora on her back. "But it seems that it''s exactly your case," Sumi continued. "I don''t have a different explanation for why a person would have been brought from another world to ours." "Oh¡" sighed Nora, her fingers unconsciously tracing the edge of Sumi''s blanket. "Like there weren''t enough problems on my plate already. Now there are Gods with their own agendas." She stared into the dancing flames, watching as they licked hungrily at the night air, consuming everything they touched. A chill ran down her spine despite the fire''s warmth. "And I''m just a cog in that arcane mechanism." As she spoke the words, something stirred deep within her¡ªa power she hadn''t felt before, awakening like an ancient creature from slumber, stretching through her veins with a sensation both terrifying and exhilarating. Chapter 5. Basics of the System The campfire crackled softly beside them, casting dancing shadows across the trees that encircled their small camp. As their conversation meandered, Nora found herself sinking into the first true moment of peace since arriving in this world. Her body still hummed with the afterglow of her forest experience¡ªthat unexpected, primal release that had somehow opened a doorway between worlds. The memory sent a pleasant warmth through her limbs, a secret heat that made her glance shyly at Sumi. Night descended, stealing away the forest''s vibrant colors and replacing them with muted twilight¡ªyet paradoxically, everything felt more intense to her senses. Perhaps it was the lingering sensitivity from her earlier awakening, but colors seemed oversaturated, sounds carried farther, scents lingered longer. Nora''s mind was racing, trying to make sense of Sumi''s revelations. A Goddess of Love. The concept went against everything she''d built her understanding of the world on¡ªwhere things could be explained, where reality followed rules. Yet here she was, sitting in a forest she''d previously only visited in dreams, speaking with a foxkin woman who¡ªby any reasonable measure¡ªshouldn''t exist. Her grandfather''s words echoed through her memory: "Some people have one foot in each world, little dreamer." She''d dismissed those tales as she grew older, filing them away as childhood fancies. She''d chosen a path of logic and reason, of concrete reality. And yet... What if her grandfather had been trying to tell her something important? What if those weren''t just bedtime stories? He''d spoken of paths between worlds, of beings who could walk freely between them, of ordinary people chosen for extraordinary purposes. She could almost see his weathered face, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he described the hidden doorways between realms. If she accepted that a Goddess of Love existed and had somehow helped her cross between worlds, then what did that mean for her? What was she supposed to do here? And more importantly, why her? The fire''s warmth and reddish hue created a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The sounds of the forest had quieted as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for something profound to happen. The flickering light created shifting patterns on the ground and nearby tree trunks, the shadows stretching and retreating with every gust of wind. Feeling the weight of exhaustion finally catching up with her after the intense day, Nora shifted closer to Sumi, seeking warmth and comfort. The ground beneath her was cool, but at least the blanket of moss and grass softened it. Nora''s head rested gently in Sumi''s lap, and the softness of Sumi''s fur-covered thighs offered a sense of peace that Nora hadn''t felt in weeks. Sumi, smaller in stature but strong and sure, instinctively adjusted her position to cradle Nora more comfortably. She ran her fingers through Nora''s fiery red hair, her golden eyes glowing softly in the firelight. The gentle touch of Sumi''s hand on Nora''s forehead was calming, a rhythmic motion that lulled Nora into a sense of security. Nora could feel the soft rise and fall of Sumi''s breathing, a steady rhythm that somehow complemented the quiet crackle of the fire. Sumi''s scent was unexpectedly pleasant. It wasn''t absolutely foreign but, at the same time, definitely not human. And it only improved Nora''s sense of calm. "So," Nora broke the comfortable silence, "if what you''re saying is true, and there''s a Goddess of Love involved here, I need to understand why. What does she want from me? What am I supposed to be doing here?" Sumi smiled warmly, her tail curling around Nora''s ankle in what was becoming a familiar, comforting gesture. "The gods don''t always spell things out clearly, you know. They tend to nudge rather than push." Nora frowned slightly, dissatisfied with such an open-ended answer. "But there must be some reason, some pattern to all this. Even magic must follow some kind of rules, right?" Around them, the flickers of fire continued to play tricks in the darkness, stretching tall and thin along the trees before vanishing into nothingness, only to return again with each move of the flames. The light danced on their faces, illuminating Sumi''s soft fur and Nora''s sun-kissed skin in a warm, amber glow. The night air carried a cool breeze, but it wasn''t chilling. It was too early to judge, but this world seemed very mild in many aspects. And the heat from the fire kept both women comfortable, a cocoon of warmth in the darkness of the night. Their bodies entangled, and their voices dropped to a whisper. Nora and Sumi whispered about their strange connection from the first serendipitous encounter to the present moment. They shared stories of their worlds and the unexplainable events that had brought them closer. But they also talked about simpler things, like their biggest dreams and deepest fears, and building this... relationship... that started developing. When she was almost ready to drift to sleep, Nora felt a profound shift deep within her. A sensation that went beyond the physical. It was as if something bigger-than-life had taken root, a connection between her and Sumi that transcended mere companionship. It was a feeling of unity, of being understood on the most basic level. Simultaneously, Nora felt Sumi''s hips tense under her head. The foxkin woman sensed this change as well. And she gently placed a hand on Nora''s shoulder, her touch tender and grounding. "Don''t be afraid," said Sumi. "That''s absolutely normal." "What''s normal...?" asked Nora. But then... ...It wasn''t merely a feeling. Reality seemed to split open¡ªnot before her eyes, but within her mind. Something foreign yet oddly familiar crashed through her consciousness like a wave breaking against shore. Text materialized against the darkness of her thoughts, luminous and impossible, assembling itself like code being compiled in real-time. A interface, hovering in her mental landscape. A system. === System Console === Name: Nora Foxgrove Title: Chosen One of the Goddess of Love Level: 1 out of 5 - Apprentice Total skill slots: 10 Used skill slots: 8 Skills left to choose: 2 === Skills === Aura Defences: 0.0% (new skill) Dream Manipulation: 0.0% (new skill) Emotional Influence: 0.0% (new skill) Empathic Sensing: 0.0% (new skill) Energy Sharing: 0.0% (new skill) Healing: 0.0% (new skill) Sensory Enhancement: 0.0% (new skill) Sexual Magic: 0.0% (new skill) Continue for more info [Y/N]? Nora''s body jolted with surprise, causing her to quickly start up from her comfortable position in Sumi''s lap. She tried to swat the glowing text with her hand, but it didn''t want to go away. It didn''t even react when her arm passed through the letters. "What the hell? Sexual magic?" Nora blurted out, her voice cracking on the words. Back home, she''d written code for dating apps and financial systems¡ªpractical, logical applications. But this? This was something from fantasy novels she''d sneakily read during lunch breaks. Sumi''s throaty laugh bubbled up, her golden eyes crinkling at the corners. "Can you really be that surprised after how we first met?" she teased. "Some connections transcend worlds, you know." Then, Sumi momentarily became serious. "But you want to tell me you know the names of your skills?" she asked. "That''s strange. I don''t think I have ever heard about any initiates knowing their skills right away. It is supposed to be no more than a vague feeling. Not that I know much about that stuff¡" When Nora stopped reading the menu, she noticed that Sumi suddenly became very quiet. Her gaze was introspective as if she was exploring something deep within her. "What is it, Sumi?" she asked. "What do you feel?" "That''s bizarre, you know," said Sumi. "I had always known magic existed in my world. But I never expected to experience it firsthand. Well, besides some simple rituals made by a village''s herbalist." "So¡ magic¡ right¡" said Nora. "What else did you expect after you were transferred into a world of your dreams?" asked Sumi incredulously. "Yes, we have magic. But again, it''s not that widespread. I don''t think a proper mage ever came to our village. Even if I had some arcane wielders among my ancestors." This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. She looked at Nora expectantly. "So, about the names of the skills," Sumi prompted. "This is very unusual. What else can you tell me, Nora?" "It''s like text is appearing in my mind," Nora said. "It says I''m the ''Chosen One of the Goddess of Love,'' whatever that means. Wait, it looks like I can access more information." Nora moved her finger before her, following the text and opening new menus. A moment later, she exclaimed: "Yes! I have more!" Then she read aloud: === Special Powers of the Chosen One === Connection with Shrines of Love Perceive the Stats of the True Mates Share your Skills with the Keepers Channel Skill Improvement from the Harem Perceive the Affection of Mates === Quests === Main: Unite the World with Love Continue for more info [Y/N]? Sumi leaned in close, her fur tickling Nora''s ear. And with a voice barely above a whisper, she spoke: "You don''t have to shout." Then she drew back a bit and said, gesturing towards her own head: "It''s all happening within your consciousness," she tapped her temple for emphasis. "You don''t even need to speak aloud." "Ah, right, that''s reasonable," answered Nora. "But what the hell? True Mates? The Harem?!?" "To put it bluntly, all of that sounds right up the alley of the Goddess of Love," Sumi said. "But again, I''m not an expert. But even I have some ideas about some of these things." "Yes?" said Nora. "And those ideas are?" "You," Sumi purred, wagging her finger while her tail curved suggestively, "are deliciously naughty and wonderfully impatient." She leaned closer, her fur brushing against Nora''s arm in a way that couldn''t possibly be accidental. "This definitely confirms what I suspected before. Can you see anything else in there? For me, it''s all just... feelings. Instincts." She tapped her temple, golden eyes glinting in the firelight. "Like knowing exactly where to touch to make someone¡" she paused, grinning mischievously, "¡or something respond. But also, it''s more about nature, connections, healing. Good, but not as exciting as¡ Sexual Magic! Still, nothing as specific as what you''re seeing." "Wait, skills, let me see¡" said Nora. "There was something about that as well. I need to choose two!" "Two? That''s very unusual," exclaimed Sumi. "How many do you have in total?" "Ten," said Nora." Is that strange?" "Well, as I said, I''m not an expert," answered Sumi. "People with powers aren''t that rare, but it''s not like all the intricacies of their abilities are readily available and disclosed. Especially to us, non-mages. I only know that skills are usually granted to people touched by Higher Powers. And in the beginning, there should only be four skills available. Three are given right away, and one left for the person to choose. Legends say that the higher forces know your path and select the skills that fit you the best. But you are still given an opportunity to forge a personal story for yourself. Hence, the choice." She took a deep breath, trying to calm her excitement. But in the end, she couldn''t hold it at bay. "But ten skills?!?" she shouted. "Ten skills is insane! I guess it is because you are the Chosen One." Nora pressed her palms against her temples, the information swirling through her mind like data packets flooding a server. "I''m drowning in all this," she admitted, her voice steadying as she fell back on what she knew best: breaking complex problems into manageable parts. "Let''s approach this systematically. I''ll explore what I''m seeing and share it with you. Together, maybe we can make sense of whatever''s happening to me¡ªto us. Deal?" "Deal!" Sumi''s hand extended, delicate claws retracted, palm up in offering. The simple gesture¡ªso human yet not¡ªsomehow grounded Nora more than anything else in this strange new reality. Nora clasped Sumi''s hand, the initial contact sending a small jolt through her fingertips. The soft fur against her skin anchored her somehow¡ªa tactile reminder that amid all this impossible magic, there was something real to hold onto. Almost without conscious thought, her fingers traveled upward, tracing the silken path where fur met the foxkin''s warm skin. She followed the contours of Sumi''s forearm, mesmerized by the contrast of textures, only stopping when she reached the hollow of her throat. There, Nora paused, feeling Sumi''s pulse quicken beneath her fingertips, both of them caught in a moment that suddenly felt charged with more than just magic. "I''m feeling overwhelmed again," Nora said. "But I''ll try to focus on smaller things." She mentally reached out to the list of skills and started browsing, exploring the options. === Skill Availability === Camp Building Craftsmanship Enhanced Physical Strength Magic of Love Nature Attunement Optimism Telepathic Communication You have to choose 2 skills out of 7. Are you ready to choose [Y/N]? "So," said Nora, "It seems that fair share of the skills they imposed on me are mostly focused on sensual stuff. Wouldn''t it be nice to balance them with something more useful? Here''s what I have offered to me: Camp Building, Craftsmanship, Physical Strength, Magic of Love, Nature Attunement, Optimism, Telepathic Communication." She looked at Sumi with a pleading expression. Almost as if she wanted the foxkin to make that decision for her. "What''s your opinion, Sumi?" Nora asked. "Or, at least, any advice?" Sumi fiddled with her fingers as she spoke. "You are telling me that you are overwhelmed," she said. "But I can''t make this decision for you. At least you can see the names of the skills, thanks to your special powers. For me¡ I''m having trouble categorizing my skills as well as you do," She looked away, biting her lip nervously. "But if you really want my opinion, I feel like one of my skills aligns with your Healing Touch," Sumi said. "It feels like we''re tapping into the same source." "Is that even possible? "asked Nora incredulously. "That''s exactly what I''m trying to tell you!" exclaimed Sumi. "I don''t know! I don''t have any experience with any of that magical stuff! Even if my world has magic, I never had any. But maybe I should choose that one skill so we can compare notes and progress together?" "Sounds smart," said Nora with an encouraging smile. "As for your choice," Sumi continued, "Craftsmanship and Camp Building seem a bit too narrow. Nature Attunement is definitely something I have as well¡ªit''s a skill that was present in my family more than once among the previous generations. If I were you, I''d take Telepathic Communication. I didn''t even know telepathy was possible at all. Probably, the people who have it prefer not to share they have this power." "Right," said Nora. "I''ll take it and Enhanced Physical Strength as well. Not that I''m complaining about my physical abilities, but I feel it may become handy if we need to build something." They both closed their eyes, and each took a deep breath, exploring the new abilities within themselves. After a moment of contemplation, Nora and Sumi nodded in agreement simultaneously. The decision had been made. === System Console === Name: Nora Foxgrove Title: Chosen One of the Goddess of Love Level: 1 out of 5 - Apprentice Total skill slots: 10 Used skill slots: 10 Skills left to choose: 0 === Skills === Aura Defences: 0.0% Dream Manipulation: 0.0% Emotional Influence: 0.0% Empathic Sensing: 0.0% Energy Sharing: 0.0% Healing: 0.0% Sensory Enhancement: 0.0% Sexual Magic: 0.0% === New Skills === Enhanced Physical Strength: 0.0% (new skill) Telepathic Communication: 0.0% (new skill) The next 2 skills available after level up to Initiate "Did you know there will be more skills available after level up?" asked Nora in surprise. With a deep sigh, Sumi frowned and rubbed her tired eyes. "No, as I said before, it''s not a widely discussed topic." Her words trailed off into a yawn that caused her mouth to stretch wide open. "And besides," Sumi continued, stifling another yawn, "it''s not like we''re going to reach that point anytime soon." She leaned back against the tree trunk, the weariness evident in her posture and voice. Nora was still excited about all the changes and new abilities she gained. To her, all of that felt like a fairy tale. Completely unreal. Even if it was getting late, her mind was focused on exploration. But it wasn''t the same for Sumi. "I know it''s a lot to take in," Sumi said. "But it was an intense day, maybe we should go to sleep?" "Yeah, you are probably right," said Nora and also yawned. Now, tiredness was overcoming her as well, as soon as she allowed her focus to slip away from the strange events of the recent hours. The fire surrendered to night, its final embers pulsing like dying stars against the darkness. Nora''s breathing slowed, unconsciously synchronizing with the gentle rise and fall of Sumi''s chest beside her. The day''s revelations still echoed through her mind¡ªChosen One, magic, skills, harems¡ªbut the weight of them seemed lighter somehow, shared between them on this forest floor. Nora''s last conscious thought wasn''t of the code she''d left unfinished in another world, nor of the mysterious goddess who had marked her. Instead, it was of this moment: the warmth of Sumi curled against her, the canopy of stars overhead, and the strange certainty that she belonged here more than she ever had in the world she''d left behind. The shadows danced one final time across their sleeping forms¡ªa true spell in motion¡ªbefore the forest stilled around them. Two figures, barely visible in the vast wilderness, yet somehow at the center of something much larger than themselves¡ªsomething that had only just begun to awaken. Chapter 6. The Guardian Nora''s eyes snapped open, her heart already racing before her mind could grasp why. The glade lay bathed in the pearly light of dawn, dew glistening on spider webs strung between blades of grass. Birds trilled their morning songs overhead, too peaceful for the unease knotting in her stomach. Nora stretched, goosebumps rising as cool air kissed her skin. She marveled at how she''d slept through the night under an open sky without shivering from cold or aching from the hard ground¡ªas if the forest itself had cradled her through the darkness. Back home, even camping with the best gear had never felt this comfortable. Nora''s hand reached out instinctively for Sumi, fingers finding only the hollow depression in the moss where the foxkin''s warmth should have been. The indent was still warm, the ghost of Sumi''s body heat lingering like a cruel taunt. Nora''s throat constricted as her gaze darted around the glade, searching for that familiar flash of black and white fur. Nothing. Only the faint musk of foxkin still hanging in the air¡ªproof that Sumi had been real, that Nora hadn''t dreamed her into existence. Nora cupped her hands around her mouth. "Sumi!" she shouted, her voice shattering the morning stillness. Birds scattered at the sudden noise, their wings flapping in protest. She scrambled to her feet, scanning the clearing with increasingly desperate eyes. Nothing¡ªno discarded clothing, no backpack, not even footprints leading away from their sleeping spot. Just the blanket wrapped around her own shoulders, the only evidence that Sumi had ever existed. She dropped to her knees beside the moss where they''d slept, fingers probing the soft ground for clues. The indentation of Sumi''s body remained perfect, undisturbed¡ªas if the foxkin had simply... dematerialized. As panic crept in, Nora''s thoughts raced. Had Sumi left her? Was this some kind of test? A trap? A cruel joke? Her mind churned with questions, each one more distressing than the last. She couldn''t shake off the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Nora''s feet pounded against the ground as she paced the clearing, her frustration building to a boiling rage. "How could you do this to me?" The words tore from her throat, scraping it raw. Her fists clenched so tight her nails bit half-moons into her palms. "After everything we promised each other¡ªafter you helped me get the basic understanding of this world¡ªyou just... vanish?" Her voice cracked, betrayal and rage warring for dominance. She kicked at the moss where they''d lain together, sending clumps flying. "Was I just some novelty to you? A strange human toy you got bored with?" The forest swallowed her accusations, offering no answers, no defense. As minutes passed without sign of Sumi, Nora''s anger turned inward. She felt foolish for letting her guard down, for trusting so easily. The feeling was exaggerated even more when she remembered how foolishly she presented herself nude to the fox-like young woman. "What was I thinking acting like that!" exclaimed Nora. "Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! " Her shouts disturbed the serene forest. It had felt like a sanctuary the previous day, but now it seemed cold and indifferent. Nora sat down to analyze her surroundings. Somehow, when she paid closer attention, the glade felt wrong. It didn''t seem possible, but it wasn''t the same place she laid down to sleep on the previous day''s evening. "What do I know about possible and impossible? "asked Nora aloud. "Before that I fell asleep in a forest on Earth and woke up in a different world. I can''t be sure that wouldn''t happen again. " Nora''s eyes darted around the tranquil glade, and her hands trembled as she spoke. It was a different place. "Right¡ It happened once... it could happen again," Nora said, her voice barely above a whisper. Her gaze shifted towards the forest. Nora''s heart raced at the thought of Sumi searching for her somewhere in this strange new world. Or was it another world all over again? "Maybe it wasn''t Sumi who left me..." Nora said, analyzing the situation." Maybe she''s out there right now, looking for a lost redhead who disappeared in the dead of night." That thought, even if disturbing, aroused new hope in Nora. There still was a chance. Nothing seemed impossible anymore. *** Unable to sit in one place, Nora stepped into the dense forest, her eyes scanning the trees and underbrush for any sign of her missing companion. The weight of Sumi''s absence bore down on Nora''s heart, and she felt disoriented, surrounded by unfamiliar flora and fauna. The reality of her situation hit Nora like a physical blow. No food. No water. No shelter. Just herself and a borrowed blanket in an alien forest that seemed to be actively reshaping itself around her. Her stomach clenched with hunger, her throat already parched. If she didn''t find water soon, the question of Sumi''s whereabouts would become moot. Survival first¡ªthen answers. But that wasn''t all. The sense of betrayal gnawed at her, threatening to undermine the resolve she had begun to build. But then, she wasn''t sure where to target her anger. As she moved deeper into the forest, the air grew colder, and the light dimmed even more. Trees seemed to close around her, their branches twisting at unnatural angles. Nora shivered as if in the presence of something powerful and foreboding. She stopped for a moment to explore her feelings. It was a sensation she recognized¡ªthe same force that had barred her entry into the dream world before. Determined not to be intimidated, Nora pressed on. Now, she just had to face that mysterious force. She had to figure out who was preventing her from being with Sumi. The path ahead was obscured by shadows, but soon, she could make out a faint glow in the distance. Nora followed the light, her steps cautious yet resolute. The otherworldly glow pulsed ahead¡ªbeckoning, retreating, beckoning again¡ªleading Nora through the mist that clung to her skin like cold silk. The vapor parted reluctantly, revealing a small clearing where reality itself seemed to bend. At its center stood a figure that violated the logic of her eyes. Tall¡ªimpossibly so¡ªits form shifting between solid and vapor, darkness folding into itself like smoke caught in contrary winds. It seemed to both absorb the ambient light and emanate its own anti-luminescence, a presence defined as much by what it wasn''t as what it was. Despite her racing heart and heightened senses, Nora couldn''t help but move closer, her steps tentative yet determined. "Who are you?" she demanded, her voice steady despite the fear that gripped her. "And what do you want from me?" The figure turned, their eyes glowing with an eerie light. Their voice boomed through the darkness like a haunting echo: "Most who perceive me call me the Guardian," the voice resonated not just in her ears but in the hollow of her chest, in the spaces between her thoughts. "I maintain the equilibrium between realms when forces would destabilize them." The figure seemed to look through her rather than at her. "And you, Nora Foxgrove, are a fundamental disruption to patterns woven since before your world had air for creatures to breathe." Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there. Nora squared her shoulders and took a step forward. She balled her fists at her sides, ready for a fight. "I''m not a disruptor," she retorted. "I just want to understand what''s happening and find my friend." The Guardian''s form flickered, their expression unreadable. "Your presence here has put in motion a sequence of events that cannot be undone," the Guardian said." The Goddess of Love has chosen you, and her plans for you are crucial to the fate of many worlds." Nora''s eyes narrowed. "Chosen for what?," she asked." And where is Sumi? Or¡ Where am I?" The Guardian seemed to hesitate, their form wavering. "I can tell you this: you were right to think that Sumi wasn''t the one to leave you," the Guardian said." I prevented you from connecting to this world before and I brought you to this construct now. As I said, you may be the one who breaks the fragile balance that is already shifting." "So, you are just one more force that tries to coerce me into doing something I may not even want to do!" exclaimed Nora angrily, balling her fists once again and stomping her foot. "I''m not going to give you a direct answer to that," said the Guardian." It may infringe on the plans of the other forces. And it isn''t my place to uncover their secrets. However, I can say that I''ve been following your actions closely over long time. You''ve demonstrated consistency, experimentation, and will to find balance." The Guardian seemed to be lost in thought for a moment. Then, the shape shifted once again, changing form. "And as you''ve probably heard from me already," the Guardian said," balance is something I care about the most." There was a noticeable shift in the figure''s demeanor. It was slight, but still quite present. The once cold voice now carried a hint of warmth. The shadowy form leaned in closer, the Guardian''s movements less menacing and¡ more gentle. Momentarily, Nora couldn''t help but feel a glimmer of hope that this could be the beginning of a new understanding between them. "I have to say, that I won''t be a pawn in your games," Nora said. "I''ll find Sumi, and I''ll decide my own path." The Guardian''s form solidified, their eyes locking onto Nora''s with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Well, that''s exactly what I wanted to offer you." Nora took a deep breath, her determination unwavering. "So, what do I have to do?" As the Guardian''s hand reached out, a thick mist swirled around them. Slowly, it started to disperse, following the direction pointed out by the mysterious figure. A path that was hidden moments before suddenly cleared. A dark, winding road. "Follow this path," the Guardian instructed, their voice echoing between the surrounding trees. "Face the trials that await you. That is how you can prove you are ready to begin your quest." Nora took the first step towards the path. Then she stopped and turned to face the Guardian. She felt a sudden surge of determination as she looked at the strange figure. "I will," she said confidently. "And I will find Sumi." As the Guardian''s presence slowly faded away, the weight of the conversation settled in Nora''s chest. More trials, more tests¡ªas if being ripped from her world hadn''t been trial enough. Yet beneath her frustration burned a spark of hope. If these cosmic forces could separate her from Sumi, perhaps they could reunite them too. With renewed purpose, she stepped forward on the path, only to freeze as glowing text materialized before her eyes. === Quests === Main: Unite the world with Love Main: Overcome the Five Trials Continue for more info [Y/N]? Her face flushed hot. "I''m not some medieval damsel being bartered off in a cosmic arrangement! I can find my own partners when I want them." She crossed her arms, muttering, "Even if dating apps back home were a wasteland of disappointment lately." Shouting into the darkness wasn''t very efficient. Nora realized that well enough. But still, after blowing off steam, she felt much more confident. Nora returned to the path, the shadows closing in around her. As she walked, the forest seemed to shift and change, and the landscape morphed into a labyrinth of dark hedges and hidden dangers as if it was being formed around her even while she was moving forward. Her senses were on high alert; each sound and shadowy movement caught her attention. The path ahead was still not fully visible, but Nora pressed on, her determination guiding her. *** The Guardian''s presence evaporated like morning mist under a harsh sun, leaving Nora standing before an imposing stone arch that dominated the clearing. Beyond its curve lay not forest, but a shimmering wall of iridescent nothing¡ªlike oil slicked across reality itself. ''Trial Grounds,'' her mind supplied helpfully as if this were just another level in one of those fantasy RPGs she''d binged during her last vacation. She gave a bitter laugh. Of course, her programmer''s brain would try to categorize the incomprehensible into familiar patterns, to force cosmic mystery into neat data structures she could parse. The square before the arch was surrounded by several small cabins. There was a well in the center and a few trees and bushes between the buildings. It didn''t look like a village; it was more like a place that was envisioned for some different purpose. The place felt a bit artificial. But then, it didn''t look menacing if you forgot about the grand entrance looming above her. That was a plus. Contemplating the ominous structure, Nora suddenly felt a new presence behind her. It was a bizarre feeling, knowing that someone was moving in her direction. She hadn''t heard the person yet, and it was too early to see them. But she knew. Nora''s senses improved during her recent transformation. More than improved, they changed, expanded, and became more subtle. Her instinct proved true. The underbrush rustled, and a figure emerged from the dappled shadows. Where Sumi was all sleek lines and fox-like grace, this newcomer was solid power wrapped in silver-gray fur. The word ''wolfkin'' surfaced in Nora''s mind¡ªa term she''d stumbled across during those late-night internet searches when she''d first tried to understand what ''kitsune'' might be. This was unmistakably one of those wolf-human hybrids she''d seen in illustrations¡ªbroad-shouldered and standing a head taller than her, with piercing green eyes that assessed her from a face that balanced human intelligence with lupine features. His tail, thicker and less agile than Sumi''s, swayed slightly as he approached with the measured caution of someone encountering the unexpected. The arrival seemed almost orchestrated. So Nora started with the greatest opening of all time: "Hey! You alright?" As she had promptly learned, the person''s name was Lukan, and he was a wolfkin. Interestingly, he wasn''t even sure what he was doing at the entrance of the trial grounds with Nora. Just a few moments before, he was minding his business, traveling through the forest when the area started shifting into something unfamiliar. Bit by bit, the trees changed around him, pushing Lukan to follow a path that led him here, to meet Nora. Though their meeting was serendipitous, Nora couldn''t shake the feeling that there was more to Lukan''s presence than mere chance. His easy charm and natural confidence felt like something that could support her during the unknown trials ahead. After some small talk, Nora and Lukan exchanged introductions and shared a few laughs. But somehow, Nora had a strong sense that they would have to explore a lot together. Much more than this strange place. "A journey of a thousand li begins with a single step," she muttered, the ancient Earth proverb feeling strangely appropriate in this realm of myths come to life. Lukan''s ears flicked forward, catching her words with their enhanced sensitivity. "Sorry, what was that?" he asked, genuine curiosity warming his voice. "It sounds like something the wandering sages would carve on waymarkers in the northern mountains." Nora looked up, surprised by the connection. "It''s a saying from my homeland. I didn''t expect it to sound familiar here." "Different places, same wisdom, perhaps," Lukan offered with a slight tilt of his head. "The old ones say wisdom circles through all landslike water through all rivers." He gestured toward the imposing arch. "Though I doubt much wisdom awaits us through there." Nora''s lips quirked into a half-smile despite herself. "Well, we won''t know until we try, will we?" Chapter 7. It’s a Bloody Tutorial, Isn’t It? "Oh, don''t worry, nothing special," Nora said, massaging her temples. "Just contemplating ancient wisdom while facing magical talking wolves and trial grounds that appear out of nowhere. You know, Tuesday stuff." Her attempt at humor felt hollow even to her own ears, but it was better than admitting how utterly lost she felt. That proverb about journeys and single steps felt painfully literal now¡ªeach step deeper into this world seemed to take her further from everything familiar. Lukan continued to look at Nora incredulously for a few seconds and then shook his head. "Alright," he said hesitantly. "If you say so. Anyway, if we are stuck here, should we explore a bit?" Nora circled the well, running her fingertips along the cool stonework. No hidden runes, no magical shimmer, just a perfectly ordinary well that happened to exist in an extraordinarily non-ordinary place. The incongruity made her skin prickle. She leaned over the edge, inhaling the clean scent of fresh water. "Expecting it to start talking?" Lukan asked, a hint of amusement in his voice. "At this point?" Nora dipped her fingers in the water, half-expecting it to turn to fire or blood. "I wouldn''t rule anything out." The cabins drew their attention next. Nora pushed open the weathered door of the first structure, wincing at the creak of ancient hinges. Inside, the air hung cool and still, carrying the faint scent of wood smoke and dried herbs. Shadows retreated as sunlight poured through the open door, revealing a small, surprisingly tidy entrance room that branched into two separate chambers. Each held a bed¡ªnothing fancy, just solid craftsmanship that promised actual rest. After nights on the forest floor, even these plain furnishings looked like luxury. The wooden floors creaked softly under their weight as they explored. Everything seemed to be well loved and used, but there was no dust to be seen anywhere, no rubbish, no things left out of place. It was as if the cabin was just cleaned or even created out of nothing in its current state. Lukan knocked on the walls, took the measure of the beams and support structures, and nodded approvingly. "Sturdy, good quality," he said. "This should be safe for us to sleep in later." "So, are you an expert?" Nora said and smiled. "At least we won''t be sleeping on the ground tonight." "I am, as a matter of fact," Lukan said. "I''m a professional builder." "Creating something real with your hands," Nora said, genuine admiration warming her voice. "Must be satisfying to actually see what you''ve built." She brushed her fingertips against the cabin wall. "I''m a software engineer¡ªI build things too, but they only exist as... patterns. Instructions that make devices work." Lukan''s ears twitched forward. "A soft-what now?" Nora laughed, the sound surprising even herself. "Right. How to explain this?" She scanned the room for analogies. "Do you have machines here? Not just carts, but things with gears and levers that do complicated tasks?" Lukan nodded slowly, curiosity brightening his eyes. "I write instructions that tell these machines what to do," she continued. "Like invisible commands that make things move, calculate, or communicate. Except where I''m from, these machines are a thousand times more complex than anything you''ve probably seen." "So, you are a mage and work with artifacts?" asked Lukan. "You could have just told me that." "Well¡ No, but really, I guess, I am a mage now," said Nora. "But it isn''t what I did before... Sort of... But if you look at it from your perspective... Well, we can call it that. But I just got my powers recently." Nora stopped and looked at Lukan in frustration. "It''s hard to explain!" she exclaimed, throwing up her arms. Lukan raised his palms in a placating gesture, a broad smile on his face. "Wait, wait, wait!" he said. "Don''t worry. We were just having some small talk. No need to sweat it out! Everything''s fine! I''m a builder, and you are a soft-whatever-mage. That''s fine!" "Software engineer," said Nora with a sigh. "Alright, we sleep here. And they got us separate rooms. What else do we have?" The pair moved to the second cabin, which housed a modest kitchen and a pantry. Wooden shelves lined the walls, stocked with essential ingredients: grains, herbs in jars, and even some cured meat hanging from hooks. A small cellar revealed more food¡ªenough to last them for quite some time if needed. "Whoever set this place up really wanted to make sure we''re not starving," Lukan said, peeking into the storage jars. "There''s enough food here to feed us for at least a week. Maybe more!" Nora nodded, impressed by the foresight of the Guardian or whoever made this construct for her. "You are right. It seems they expect us to stay here for a while," Nora said, taking all the food into account. "Should we expect more guests?" "No idea! How would I know?" said Lukan, not stopping the exploration. It was the third cabin that caught Nora''s attention the most. Her eyes lit up as she entered the sturdy building, immediately spotting a rack and a few shelves filled with what looked like very practical outdoor clothes. They looked a bit like they were taken out of a medieval reenactment museum or a fantasy game. Still, it wasn''t like Nora was in a position to complain. "Oh thank god," Nora breathed, relief washing over her as she spotted the racks of clothing. Her fingers traced the rough-spun fabric of a tunic. "Actual clothes. I was starting to think I''d be wrapped in a blanket for the rest of my life." Without thinking, Nora reached for a set of undergarments and an outfit that looked her size. Years of changing in crowded gym locker rooms had eliminated any natural modesty. She let Sumi''s blanket fall away and reached for the clothes, only realizing her mistake when she heard Lukan''s strangled cough. Nora stood there for a moment, completely nude in the soft light that filtered through the cabin''s window, her skin bathed in the warm glow. The sunlight accentuated the toned muscles of her body, shaped by years of hiking and regular physical training. Somehow, the warmth felt more magical than anything she had ever experienced. For a brief moment, it returned her to that glade where her life was changed forever. However, Nora''s entrancement was interrupted by Lukan''s surprised cough. Nora turned on the spot, finally remembering she wasn''t alone. Momentarily, she tried to cover her body with her hands and grab Sumi''s blanket from the floor once again. Lukan immediately averted his gaze, his cheeks flushing a little. It was strange to see that blush coming through from under his dark fur, and Nora couldn''t stop herself before laughing out loud. "Uh... maybe I should give you a moment," Lukan muttered, his voice awkward and strained. "I didn''t want to startle you. But I didn''t expect this... display either." Nora chuckled again, regaining her composure. "Ah, I''m sorry, I got distracted," she said. "This place is different. And you don''t need to be so shy, Lukan. I''m just getting dressed." After putting on the panties and a surprisingly comfy top, she began pulling on the leather pants. All the clothes were amazingly well-fitting and felt nice under Nora''s touch. Still looking away, Lukan managed a sheepish smile. "It''s not that. It''s just¡ªwell, you clearly don''t skip out on physical training," he said. "You''ve got a body that''s definitely ready for what awaits us. Whatever it is. Strong, capable... not something you see every day." The author''s content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon. "I have my pants on. You can look," said Nora, grinning at the compliment. "Well, glad to hear I''m not completely out of place for this kind of adventure. Thanks, though." Nora couldn''t stop herself but to run her hand again over the clothes she just put on. The feeling was... magical. She had never worn anything that felt that good. "Are all the clothes here so nice?" she asked. "Is it some magic or whatever?" "I don''t know. I guess my clothes are ok," said Lukan. "I''ll have to test the ones left for us here to tell." As Nora pulled the tunic over her head, Lukan finally chanced a glance back, clearly relieved to see she was now fully dressed. "I wasn''t trying to make things awkward," he added, scratching the back of his neck. "But yeah, you look like you can handle yourself out here." "No worries," Nora said. She adjusted the tunic, folded Sumi''s blanket, and put it aside. "No harm done. Now, let''s get ready to tackle whatever this place throws at us. That is if you don''t want to change clothes as well. I can wait outside if you prefer that." *** Fully dressed in practical clothes and outfitted for the forest and whatever magical elements might come into play, Nora felt a bit more prepared. Prepared for what, though? She still didn''t know what exactly awaited her. A trial? A test? Did her clothes and gear even provide any benefit? After regaining his composure, Lukan gave Nora a nod. "Well, if you''re suited up, there are a few things to keep in mind," he said, shifting into a more serious tone as he surveyed their surroundings. "You mentioned that you are from a different place," Lukan said confidently. "And your¡ profession¡ sounds strange. So, here is my advice. Out here, survival isn''t just about strength. You''ll want to be mindful of your surroundings¡ªlisten for unusual sounds and watch for changes in the environment. I''m not a great expert in magical places. But if you say you have at least some magical powers, we''ll probably have to use all you can muster." Lukan looked at Nora as if expecting her to start complaining or contradicting him. But she kept silent, listening intently to what he had to say. When he didn''t continue, she said: "Well? I''m listening!" Nora said. "I''m happy to get any advice. You say you are not an expert. In that case, I''m not even an apprentice." "In that, you are probably wrong," said Lukan. "If you have magic, you are an Apprentice. But we''ll figure out that soon anyway. I''ve traveled a bit and this definitely is a magical place. It probably means it can shift and transform in ways that mess with your senses." He gestured toward the equipment in the cabin. "Good boots will keep you steady. And always carry something sharp," Lukan looked at Nora as if calculating how much experience she had. "I mean like a knife. Even if you don''t think you''ll need it. You never know what''s coming." Nora nodded, listening intently as Lukan continued giving her practical advice on surviving in natural and magical environments. "And don''t forget," Lukan added. "Stay hydrated. That well''s here for a reason. And it would probably be safe to use its water. It would have been strange if the powers that put us here decided to poison us after all that trouble. Drink when you can. But don''t drink from random streams we''ll meet later unless you''re sure the water''s clean. As I said, magic messes with things out here. It''s not just the creatures that''ll get you¡ªsometimes, it''s the land itself." Nora fastened a leather belt around her waist and grabbed a small utility knife from the shelf. "Got it. Be prepared, stay alert, and watch the water," she beamed at Lukan. "It looks like many basic things remain the same no matter where you come from." Lukan smiled approvingly. "Good! Now, let''s take stock of the supplies here and figure out our next move." Together, they explored the rest of the cabin, gathering some essential gear before heading back to the kitchen area for a quick meal, ready to face the trials ahead. Finally, Nora felt like she had recovered most of the items she had lost during the transfer to the dream world. When they came outside, Lukan started laughing. "I''m sorry, I didn''t want to comment on your choice of clothes before," he said with a wide grin. "You never know what people choose to wear in a strange land. And you sort of confirmed you weren''t from these parts. But still, I''m happy you finally got to choose something more fitting." "Don''t get me wrong, I''m happy that Sumi had this blanket," said Nora, unable to resist smiling as well. "Otherwise, I''d have to walk around tits out. That may be a bit unreasonable in an unfamiliar forest, right?" "Sumi?" asked Lukan. "She''s my friend," said Nora. "We got separated earlier. I really hope to find her soon." "Well, I''m sure we''ll find her," said Lukan. "At least I was traveling alone. And as you are comfortably clothed now, let''s rest a bit, get some food, and start figuring out our next steps. It seems to be the only way for you and Sumi to reunite!" *** A while later, after a hearty meal and another round of herbal tea, Nora and Lukan stood beside each other, their gazes fixed upon the looming stone archway adorned with ancient runes. Nora''s hands trembled slightly as she reached out to touch the rough surface. Her heart raced with anticipation for the unknown challenges that lay ahead. The stone arch dominated the clearing, ancient and imposing. Beyond its frame, reality seemed to warp and bend¡ªnot quite transparent, not quite opaque. A veil of shimmering energy distorted whatever lay on the other side, transforming it into blurred shapes and indistinct colors that certainly didn''t match their current surroundings. Nora''s stomach dropped at the realization: not just a doorway then, but a portal to... somewhere else entirely. "That''s our way forward, isn''t it?" she whispered, her mouth suddenly dry. Lukan, sensing Nora''s nervousness, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Are you ready for this, ginger girl?" Nora took a deep breath, gathered herself, and flashed him a determined smile. "More than ready, wolf boy." Lukan''s ears perked forward, his muscles tensing like a predator preparing to pounce. Without warning, he strode toward the portal with purpose, shoulders squared. "Wait¡" Nora''s protest died in her throat as he disappeared through the shimmering veil with barely a ripple. "Damn it," she muttered, clenching her fists. The arch waited, patient and ancient. Whatever lay beyond had swallowed Lukan whole¡ªshe couldn''t exactly abandon him now. Swallowing the knot of fear in her throat, Nora closed her eyes and stepped forward. The air around her turned electric, raising the fine hairs on her arms as reality itself seemed to flex and warp. As they stepped further into the unknown, Nora couldn''t help but wonder what dangers and surprises awaited them. But one thing felt certain¡ªeven if they didn''t know each other for long, they were in it together. The air around her compressed, then exploded outward. Nora''s ears popped painfully as the shimmering mist evaporated like morning dew under a blazing sun. She stumbled forward, disoriented, blinking rapidly to clear her vision. Trial 1: Offense or Defense? A vast arena stretched before them, its scale so imposing that Nora felt like an insect that had wandered into a coliseum built for giants. The ceiling¡ªif there even was one¡ªdisappeared into shadows so high above that she couldn''t make it out. Lukan and Nora stepped inside, immediately struck by the sheer scale of the arena. On one side, towering stone pillars stood on the ground, their surfaces worn and cracked as if they had stood for centuries. The pillars seemed to form a complex puzzle of sorts. Nora''s mind raced as she tried to make sense of them¡ªdid they have to be moved? Did Nora and Lukan have to climb to the top? Or perhaps there was a hidden mechanism to be unlocked through their proper arrangement? She approached and ran her hand over one of the stones, feeling its rough, ancient texture, her brow furrowing in concentration. Still, there were no other sensations to guide her through the process yet. Nora pushed one of the pillars a little bit, and it shifted a few millimeters. "Why would I even think something magical would happen if I touched them?" Nora groaned, frustration bubbling up inside her. She pressed her palm harder against the stone, willing it to reveal its secrets. "God, listen to me. It''s been one day with magic and already I''m expecting everything to glow or speak or transform." She laughed bitterly, glancing at Lukan. "Is this what it''s like? Constantly second-guessing if the most mundane things are secretly magical?" Lukan stood beside her, his sharp eyes scanning the area. "Maybe it''s not exactly about magic," he muttered, his voice thoughtful. "But these pillars don''t look like they''re here for decoration. And you should trust your instincts. That''s how it usually works." He approached one of the pillars in turn, giving it a tentative push. It didn''t budge. "Whoa! They''re solid as mountains," Lukan grunted, muscles straining visibly beneath his fur as he pushed against the stone with all his considerable strength. He stepped back, ears twitching in confusion as he looked between Nora and the pillar she''d moved. "But you¡ªyou barely touched it and it shifted!" His green eyes narrowed, studying her with newfound respect and curiosity. "That''s not normal, even for someone with magic. These pillars were placed here for you specifically." He circled the stone, sniffing at it like he might detect some hidden clue. "Your abilities are activating them somehow. You just need to figure out which skill is the key." "Yeah... sure..." said Nora. Lukan paced between the pillars, evaluating their spacing and alignment. Nora joined him, her mind working in overdrive. This was like debugging without documentation¡ªa system with unknown parameters and no clear output. If only she could see the code behind this magical construct. Nora cataloged each pillar''s position, looking for patterns in their arrangement¡ªsymmetry, geometric relationships, anything that might reveal their purpose. Her fingertips tingled each time she touched the stone, but walking between them yielded nothing. No activation, no response. Just silent, ancient sentinels observing her frustration. "Holy shit," Nora whispered, her eyes widening as she turned toward the opposite end of the arena. Where the stone pillars had offered a mysterious but benign puzzle, this side promised something altogether more lethal. Pillars of flame erupted in violent, unpredictable patterns, their roars echoing across the chamber. Even from this distance, waves of scorching heat pulsed against her face, drying her eyes and making her skin tighten uncomfortably. Sweat immediately beaded along her hairline, evaporating almost as quickly in the infernal heat. "I''m guessing that''s part two of whatever test this is," she muttered, unable to keep the dread from her voice. She looked back at the stone pillars, then to the wall of flame, understanding dawning like ice water down her spine. Chapter 8. The First Trial Nora was twisting and untwisting a curl of her ginger hair, looking in the distance. "Do you think we''ll have to get through those?" she asked, her voice betraying a hint of worry. "Wouldn''t we need some sort of protection to do that? We don''t even know if the fire is real or just some kind of magical illusion. But if it''s real¡ How could we possibly get through? You told me you don''t have any magic. And I... I''m new...!" Lukan crossed his arms, watching the flames with narrowed eyes. Then he put his hands on Nora''s shoulders reassuringly and looked her in the eyes. "It looks insane, that''s for sure," he said. "Even if the flames are a magical illusion, I''m not keen on testing that with my fur. We''ll need to figure out if there''s a way to turn them off or at least dampen their intensity. Maybe there''s a trigger or some kind of ward we can activate. But I''m sure that if you were put here on purpose, there should be a way." They both stood at the center of the arena, looking back and forth between the stone pillars and the fiery obstacles, their minds racing. The contrast between the two challenges couldn''t be more prominent. "It''s like they want us to choose," Nora murmured. "Do we tackle the brute strength challenge with the pillars or risk the flames? Either way, we''ll have to figure out how to use our skills to get through this. I have some defensive magic I can try, but I never used it and don''t know how long will it last!" "Don''t look at me," Lukan said. "You have at least some magic. I have none. So, the only way I see us getting through this is with you testing your skills. And believing in them." "Alright, I will," said Nora. She balled her fists and took a step forward. "I was made to face these trials as soon as I got my new skills. It''s only reasonable that they are what I should use to get us through. It would be just fucking stuping otherwise!" Lukan nodded, his eyes gleaming with a mix of determination and wariness. "That''s the determination I hoped to hear!" he said. "We''ll have to be smart about this. Let''s try the pillars first. They seem less likely to singe off your bright hair or a patch of my fur." With that, they slowly moved toward the towering stones, flinching at any surprising sound or exceptionally bright flicker of the flames. They knew that the actual trial hadn''t even begun yet. The Challenge of Strength Stepping closer to the pillars, Nora mentally appraised her newly acquired skills. She remembered what Sumi had said earlier, that no other beginner mages knew the names of their skills or their detailed functions. These fresh mages had to explore these new abilities by trial and error, gaining experience and improving them blindly. But Nora had an advantage. And she planned to use it to the maximum. She felt a surge of energy as she stepped forward, Enhanced Physical Strength skill kicking in, her body tingling with newfound power. Other skills, on the contrary, as if dimmed in her mind''s eye, made themselves secondary. "I think I can handle the pillars," Nora said, her voice filled with determination. "I just feel the strength in my arms right now. It''s so strange I didn''t realize it earlier!" Lukan watched as she approached the first pillar. "Well, I didn''t lie when I commented on your fitness earlier," he said. "But if it could be boosted by a magical skill, that''s a different story. I''m not surprised one of the pillars shifted before when you just slightly touched it. Show me what you''ve got!" Nora placed her hands on the pillar and pushed, her muscles straining. She pushed and pushed and pushed. But nothing changed. "I remember that feeling from when I touched it earlier," said Nora. "I felt empowered. But now, it''s nothing. What has changed?" Then, Nora made a conscious effort to focus on her skill. As soon as she did that, she felt the massive stone structure beginning to shift bit by bit. Soon, it was impossible to stop it. Lukan''s eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, wow! Nice!" he said. "Didn''t expect it to go that smoothly." Nora smiled, feeling a rush of satisfaction and relief that her Enhanced Physical Strength skill was working and providing enough force for this challenge. The only remaining thing was to figure out the sequence and the positioning of these pillars, of these pieces of the puzzle. "So, were you sure my fitness would be enough before?" Nora asked playfully. "Or are you surprised now that I was able to do that? Choose your answer wisely!" She wiggled her eyebrows. "There''s a lot you don''t know about me," Nora said with a smile. "You just watch!" "Sure, I''ll watch," said Lukan returning a smile. "But I''ll join you with the other pillars." After that, they combined their efforts and moved the rest of the pillars, promptly figuring out the correct pattern. Ultimately, this challenge reminded Nora of countless puzzles from the old computer quests she loved so much in her childhood. Physical exertion was exhilarating. There was plenty of time for friendly banter. Soon, the unlikely pair was exchanging jokes and laughing loudly at each other''s awkward childhood memories. Suddenly, Nora felt a strange warmth spreading all over her body, and happiness filled her. She was content that she didn''t have to face the challenges alone. Lukan''s presence made moving through this bizarre magical obstacle course so much more bearable. She had only met two people in this magical world and wanted both of them to be her friends already. Well, three people, if one counts the Guardian. But Nora wasn''t yet sure he was a person. A soft sound chimed over the arena as Nora and Lukan placed all the pillars in their designated spaces. There was no other indication that the first challenge was fulfilled. But at the same time, there didn''t seem to be anything else to do with the stone fixtures. It was time to face the fire. The Wall of Flames Their next challenge presented itself as a series of burning obstacles. During all the time they spent figuring out the first challenge, the intensity of the flames didn''t change. There were sudden outbursts, but it didn''t change the general quality. Luckily, at least it didn''t intensify. But it wasn''t looking any safer either. Flames shot out from the walls and floor, creating a dangerous obstacle course. They could walk around it and approach the challenge from any side. But it did nothing for them. No chimes sounded. Nothing changed in the arena in general. Once again, Nora felt like she was in the middle of a reality show obstacle course. Or that sequence of challenges they create for the dog shows. She could avoid it for whatever long period of time she wanted. But in the end, she just had to step in the very middle of that flaming shitshow. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Nora hesitated, recounting her skills once again, thinking about how they could get through. Still, it was easier said than done. Some of the names of the skills were cryptic at best. Sexual Magic sounded pretty straightforward. But what would the use of Empathic Sensing or Emotional Influence be? "We need some sort of shield," Nora muttered, trying to focus. "What can make me a shield?" Suddenly, a wild thought struck her, and she raised her hand, willing a protective barrier to form. To her amazement, she sensed that it was Aura Defenses that provided a shimmering shield that surrounded her arm from all sides. "Whoa," Lukan said, impressed. "You really are full of surprises." "I thought Aura Defenses would protect me from bad juju or burning gazes of hateful people," Nora answered, scratching her forehead. "Not from real flames. But, whatever! If it works, it works! Care to test it with me?" Nora smiled, a bit relieved. Still, she needed to be sure that she would be able to cover not only herself but also her companion. "Stay close to me," Nora said. "I need to test it first. I''m not even sure I''ll be able to cover both of us. But then, something tells me that''s the right choice to guide us through this challenge. We just have to move quickly." Lukan nodded, his eyes reflecting the raging flames. "Lead the way, Nora." They moved forward, staying so close that Nora could feel the heat of Lukan''s wolf-like body. His fur tickled her bare skin, where it wasn''t covered with clothes. The feeling was both otherwordly and amusing. But Nora''s guess was correct. This protective skill safeguarded both of them and even absorbed the heat and the flames. Soon, the first fiery barrier began flickering and gradually waned. For now, with the skill''s defensive power, they didn''t even break a sweat. That''s how they continued for a while. Nora pushed on, determined to keep them both safe. Lukan stayed close, following each Nora''s step. Supporting her with his calm presence and witty comments. His trust in his new companion increasing with each move. "You''re doing great," he whispered. "Just a little further. We are almost there!" Nora gritted her teeth, focusing all her energy on maintaining the protective barrier. She didn''t have an innate ability to sense her reserves. She couldn''t even guess if there were any reserves at all. But still, there were no hints that the protective shield would disappear soon. They still had time. "Thanks, I just hope this holds," Nora answered. "All of this is quite exciting, but I don''t really know what I''m doing. Thanks... for believing in me." As soon as she said that, the flames intensified. It was as if they were listening to her. OR sensing her emotions. The nearest barrier began to flicker, at moments seeming to burn even more intensely. Under this magical assault, Nora finally felt her strength waning. There were limits to her abilities. And she was getting closer and closer. "Lukan, I need your support," she said. "I can''t keep this up much longer." Lukan placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You''re not alone, you''ll get us through, I''m sure!" Surprisingly, these words of reassurance were precisely what she needed to find some untapped reserves. With renewed determination, Nora pushed forward, using the last bits of her strength to clear the remaining obstacles while maintaining the protective barrier. As soon as they passed the last obstacle, it flared up brighter than any of the barriers they faced earlier. This final burst was so powerful that the flames reached out to Lukan, who was otherwise somewhat protected by Nora''s body. "Damn!" he exclaimed with a wild grin. "Now I''ll need a haircut!" *** The same soft sound chimed as soon as the last flames died down. It wasn''t like something prevented them from exiting before, besides the innate understanding that they had to pass two challenges. But now, there was no reason to stay in the trial arena anymore. Moving towards the exit, Nora almost jumped with every step. A broad smile was shining on her face, and she made loops around Lukan, retelling and even showing the steps that allowed them to overcome the recent challenges. "Ah-ha-ha! That was bizarre!" she exclaimed. "We did it!" "Yeah, I''ve been there," said Lukan with a smile. "Remember?" Nora laughed so hard that she doubled over, clutching her stomach. "What just happened to us?" she said. Nora continued to laugh so uncontrollably that every few breaths were interrupted by small, hiccup-like sobs as if her laughter had become too much to contain. "Were we safe here or not?" she asked. "The flames definitely weren''t an illusion." She rumpled Lukan''s singed fur. "You are right, I''ll have to give you a haircut," Nora said. "Did you ever do a haircut to a wolfkin?" asked Lukan, suspicion in his voice. "No, but I don''t think I can do any worse than it is now," said Nora. "Anyway, maybe we were in mortal danger here. What do you think?" "It was a test. And it pushed us. But it all seems to be about balance," Lukan said, nodding to some unspoken thoughts. "I feel reassured after what I saw here. We only met recently. But with a partner like you, I''m ready to pass any other trials this place will throw at us! But then, you can''t just rely on strength or protection alone here. You need both. Again, balance. It seems that''s what it tries to teach you. And sometimes, you also need to connect with other people and have moral support. That''s what it tries to teach me." He stepped back and bowed deeply, with an exaggerated flourish, as if the very act of lowering himself was a grand performance for all to see. "You''re right," Nora said and smiled. "Thank you for being here. We make a pretty good team, eh? Even if your fur got a bit fried because of me." "Well, I can''t say I did much during this trial," said Lukan. "And I can see that you did everything you could. Maybe one of the next trials will allow me to be of more use¡" "What are you even talking about?!" Nora said as if offended. "When I felt exhausted during that last part, only thanks to your confident and kind words, I was able to brave through. I wouldn''t get to the end without you! It was definitely a team effort!" *** As they stepped out of the arena, Lukan and Nora were greeted by the warm sun and familiar sights of the town square. At first glance, not much has changed here. But the light has shifted, and they felt the passing of time right away. "So, how about I make a pot of this nice herbal tea, and we''ll discuss what happened and what''s next?" asked Lukan, heading toward the cabin with the kitchen. But before he was able to put the kettle on fire, a message popped up in Nora''s vision: === Updated Skills === Aura Defenses: 5.0% (+5.0%) Enhanced Physical Strength: 5.0% (+5.0%) === Skills === Aura Defenses: 5.0% Dream Manipulation: 0.0% Emotional Influence: 0.0% Empathic Sensing: 0.0% Energy Sharing: 0.0% Enhanced Physical Strength: 5.0% Healing Touch: 0.0% Sensory Enhancement: 0.0% Sexual Magic: 0.0% Telepathic Communication: 0.0% === Quest: Overcome the Five Trials === The Guardian has set you on the Path of Five Trials. "What?" asked Lukan. "I got exactly the two of the skills I used in the arena improved," Nora answered. "I guess they will be more powerful now, right?" "Where are you from, Nora?" asked Lukan in astonishment. "Every child knows that there are magic skills. And that they can be improved by doing relevant tasks." "Let''s say¡" started Nora. "I come from far away. I''ve already mentioned that! Or did you not listen?" Lukan tilted his head, his eyes unfocused momentarily as if he was trying to remember something. "Ah, yes, you told me your profession was soft," he said with a smile. "After watching you pass this trial, I would never say you are soft. Not at all!" "Ah-ha-ha, software engineer, right!" Nora laughed. "But it doesn''t seem to be relevant anymore. I don''t think you have any computers here." "Comp-what?" asked Lukan. "Yeah, that''s exactly what I guessed, "said Nora. "I''ll probably tell you later. If we spend more time together." Lukan reached out, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Take your time, Nora. Get used to this place. We''ll explore the trials together. We will find a way out and reunite you with your friend. What was her name? Sumi, right?" "Yes, I hope we''ll do all of that," said Nora softly. "It would also be nice to figure out what the hell am I doing here." Chapter 9. Dreamscape (E - on Patreon) Time warped strangely within the Guardian''s construct¡ªhours slipping away like water through cupped hands, the ordinary rhythms of day and night blurring into each other. Nora and Lukan barely noticed the sun''s descent as they traded theories about magic and skills, riding the lingering adrenaline high from their first successful trial. "Do you think that''s even a real sun?" Nora asked suddenly, gesturing toward the golden orb hanging impossibly low on the horizon. "Or just another magical fabrication, like everything else here? A sort of magical hologram?" "Holo-what?" asked Lukan, narrowing his eyes and looking at the setting sun. "It looks normal. But now I don''t know. How would you even guess if it''s real or not?" "Yeah, you are probably right. Ahhhh¡ What time is it?" asked Nora, yawning. "How is it so late already?" "I guess we spent more time battling this trial than we thought," said Lukan. "Alright, we had our dinner. Let''s have some rest, and in the morning, we''ll see what''s happening next." The tiny hamlet of three houses that was their temporary home during the trials was ready for the night. Smoke curled lazily from the stone chimney of the kitchen cabin as the last rays of the setting sun painted the thatched roofs in hues of gold and amber. Still, the place felt sterile. It was deprived of the scents and sounds of a typical village. There was no smell of hearth being lit up for the night or the chatter of the passersby''s in the streets. Still, it was hard not to notice the magic of the evening. As Nora and Lukan made their way to their respective bedrooms, the cobblestone path beneath their feet was bathed in the warm glow of the flickering lanterns that lined the way. The gentle breeze carried the distant sound of crickets and the rustling of leaves. This soothing lullaby only made their desire for sleep even stronger. Nora paused at the threshold of her bedroom, her hand resting on the worn wooden door. She glanced over her shoulder at Lukan, a soft smile on her lips. "Sleep well, Lukan. Tomorrow''s another day of challenges, but I know we''ll face them together." Lukan returned her smile, his green eyes glinting in the lamplight. "You too, Nora. We''ve got this. Whatever comes our way." Trial 2: The Dreamscape Arena After having a substantial breakfast with some warm and stimulating herbal tea, Nora and Lukan stood in the same spot on the square as before the first trial. There was still a portal in front of them. But its arch was changed beyond recognition. Gone were the runes they''d seen yesterday. And even the shape of the structure shifted and morphed. However, what stayed the same was the shimmering nothingness in the center. Nora felt power emanating from the strange pathways and grooves that now covered the arch. But she still couldn''t figure out anything besides that. Was it a hint that she had to get more powerful before sensing anything? There was no one there to give her an answer. Lukan glanced at her, concern not pairing well with his wolfish grin. "Ready for another round?" This time, they stepped through the archway together, holding hands. The world around them rippled and shifted, the familiar square dissolving like sugar in hot tea. Reality rewove itself into a dreamscape that assaulted their senses¡ªfloating islands hung suspended in a gravity-defying dance, their jagged edges bleeding tendrils of mist that curled upward instead of falling. Massive roots, thick as ancient trees, twisted between the islands, pulsing with a faint bioluminescence that seemed to beat in time with Nora''s racing heart. The sky above shifted constantly, reminding Nora of that shimmering nothingness she''d seen within the arch just moments ago. The hues ranged from deep purples and blues with streaks of vibrant oranges and golds. Auroras danced in the distance like ribbons of light. The whole scene brought the feeling of the very fabric of reality being unraveled and woven back together in a dreamlike mosaic. The ground beneath Nora and Lukan''s feet felt strange¡ªsolid yet ephemeral, as though they were walking on the surface of a magical cloud. Each step felt buoyant, their weight distributed in a way that made them feel weightless, yet there was enough resistance to ground them. Nora glanced down, noticing how her footsteps caused gentle ripples to spread across the ground as if the surface were responding to her presence. Nora''s mind tingled¡ªnot the familiar electric spark of a coding breakthrough, but something alien that crawled across the inside of her skull like spider legs made of static. The sensation buzzed at the base of her brain stem, impossible to swat away. The dreamscape wasn''t just surrounding them; it was reaching into her, probing her thoughts with gentle but insistent fingers. Each pulse of intrusion pushed deeper, like a curious child opening doors they shouldn''t. Nora''s breath caught in her throat¡ªhalf terrified, half intoxicated by the vulnerability of being so thoroughly known by something so utterly inhuman. "This place... it feels alive," Nora whispered. "This whole space! It is¡ bizarre¡ and awesome!" Nora''s eyes were wide open in amazement as she took in the floating islands and the way the skies shifted as if reacting to the presence of Lukan and Nora. The energy of this dreamscape wrapped around Nora, both foreign and familiar, and she sensed the potential of something deep within her waiting to be unlocked. The Challenge of Dreams Nora focused, reaching out with her mind to grasp the threads of the dreamscape. As her thoughts entwined with the ethereal fabric of the world, she felt a surge of energy course through her, the raw power of her Dream Manipulation skill responding to her mental command. The air shimmered around them, colors swirling like liquid paint as shapes and forms began to morph at her will. The dreamscape shifted, bending to her thoughts, forming pathways and obstacles in a dazzling array of possibilities. Lukan, standing beside her, watched in awe. "What was that?" he muttered, his eyes wide as the landscape around them danced in response to Nora''s command. "It felt¡ strange¡! Can you influence this space? Create a path for us?" Nora nodded, concentrating harder. "I think so. Let''s see where this leads us." She wove her thoughts carefully, trying to shape the floating islands into a coherent path. At the same moment, Nora felt the surrounding space becoming an intelligent force on its own. It interacted with her, responding to her mental greetings. But then, it became even more active and intrusive. Nora felt her mind being probed in response to her actions. It went deeper than she had ever expected. Digging up the most vulnerable moments of her recent and distant past. Bringing them to the surface. It continued for a while as a mental sensual interplay. Bit by bit, this external force reminded Nora of her old encounters. Until it reached out to Nora''s dreams. Her connection with Sumi, the short but intense intimate encounters they already had a chance to share, began bursting into the dreamscape. The dreamscape tore through Nora''s mental defenses with terrifying precision, latching onto memories and desires she''d barely acknowledged to herself. The air around them shimmered, and suddenly, her most intimate fantasies unfurled in three-dimensional splendor. Behind her, Lukan''s sharp intake of breath registered dimly through her shock. The dreamscape had breached her innermost sanctuary, and there was nothing she could do but watch as her private world became disturbingly, beautifully public. She felt exposed in a way that transcended her physical nakedness, her fingers twisting anxiously in the fabric of her clothing. The magical construct had forced an intimacy neither of them had chosen¡ªher most private desires laid bare before someone she''d known for mere days. Worse, the lingering sensations of phantom pleasure still echoed through her body, making it impossible to pretend the display hadn''t affected her. The final images dissolved like mist in the morning sunlight, leaving behind an aching silence. Lukan''s uncomfortable cough cut through it like a knife, dragging Nora back to their shared reality. He deliberately averted his gaze, studying a distant floating island with sudden intense interest. "So, it seems that before Sumi you mostly had human partners?" he said in a feeble attempt for small talk. "But is there a chance, just, uh... maybe focus on the path?" Nora shook her head, exasperated, and closed her eyes, forcing herself to concentrate. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. "Come on, Nora, get it together," she muttered under her breath. Nora forced a deep breath, her chest tight with a cocktail of embarrassment and determination. Beneath the mortification, a spark of anger flared¡ªthis was her mind being violated, her privacy being stripped away without consent. She summoned the analytical focus that had once debugged impossible code at 3 AM deadlines, finding comfort in its familiar precision. This violation wouldn''t break her. Her fingers trembled, but her resolve hardened like cooling steel. This was just another system to understand¡ªcomplex, alien, but governed by rules nonetheless. As she pushed back against the dreamscape''s invasion, she felt a fierce pride blooming alongside her shame. She visualized her consciousness interfacing with the dreamscape, transforming chaotic emotion into ordered intent, her thoughts crystallizing into elegant lines of Haskell code¡ªthe pure functional language whose mathematical beauty had always given her a sense of control when everything else felt chaotic. dreamscape >>= \realm -> filterImages realm >>= \clearedRealm -> return (stabilize clearedRealm) As the line appeared in her System interface, she read it in her mind: "Dreamscape bind to realm, filter images realm bind to cleared realm, return stabilize cleared realm." The skill responded sluggishly at first¡ªlike running software on outdated hardware¡ªbut then she felt it: threads of reality responding to her will, invisible filaments bending to her mental touch. The explicit scenes wavered like reflections in disturbed water, then dissolved into mist. Nora pushed deeper, no longer fighting the dreamscape but partnering with it, her mind weaving new patterns into its fabric. This wasn''t just manipulation¡ªit was collaboration, a dance between her intentions and the dream''s natural flow. This time, she focused on clarity and direction, weaving the path through the dreamscape with precision, adding new lines of code to this imagined reality through her interface. She visualized a safe passage ahead, and the dream world began to respond, forming a clear path through the floating islands, far away from the distracting images. Until the road in front of them was clear. "Oh well," gasped Lukan. "When you told me to watch you, I didn''t expect that. It was quite intense¡!" Nora punched Lukan''s shoulder with her first and smiled coyly. "You know it''s this¡ trial playing mind games with us, "she said. "I wouldn''t be surprised if it was about testing you to the same degree as about testing me!" Lukan, still slightly flustered but clearly relieved, nodded in agreement. "You may be right," he said. "Just give me a moment to clear my head. Those images would stay with me for a long time. But at least it looks like we can move forward now." "Yeah, sorry about that," Nora mumbled, still flustered as she avoided eye contact. "I didn''t expect that. But then, when would I have a chance to test any of these skills? I didn''t even expect that this¡ space will react to Dream Manipulation in such a peculiar way!" Lukan chuckled softly, his tone light. "Hey, no judgment," he said. "I get it that it''s all new to you. And¡ We all have our... distractions." He gave her a teasing grin, easing the tension. "Let''s hope we''ll get through this without any more surprises, yeah?" Nora smiled sheepishly, finally feeling her nerves settle. "Deal," she said. "Not that I could predict any of that." With the dreamscape entirely under control, they continued forward, quickly navigating the floating islands as the path shifted before them. Surprisingly, despite the earlier mishap, Nora felt more confident now. She knew that she could control her skills. Not only that, but her control over the dreamscape grew stronger with each step. Would she be able to affect only this construct of a world, with conditions tailored to challenge her in some unknown ways? Or was it about the wider world as well? To answer that question, Nora would have to go through all of the challenges first. And figure out their purpose. But for now, she walked along with Lukan, who took her hand in his large palm and tried to comfort a person he didn''t know just a few days ago. The surreal world around them continued to respond to her intentions. Morphing, reacting, but not intruding into the most delicate parts of her soul anymore. The Challenge of Communication The dreamscape shifted again as they walked, the floating islands drawing closer together. The air grew cooler against Nora''s still-flushed skin, carrying a subtle vibration that made her teeth ache slightly. Something was changing¡ªthe trial evolving into its second phase. Nora''s analytical mind wouldn''t stay quiet, even as embarrassment still clung to her like a second skin. Patterns were emerging, and recognizing them might be the difference between success and failure. Her fingers traced invisible connections in the air as she organized her thoughts. "The next challenge is coming," she murmured, more to herself than to Lukan, whose green eyes remained alert, scanning the shifting landscape ahead. "Whatever it is, I doubt it''ll be as... revealing as the last one." Nora rubbed her temples, mentally mapping connections between her growing skill set. "I''m seeing a pattern in these trials," she said. "Yesterday''s challenges paired skills that seemed opposite but connected¡ªboth dealing with force, just directed differently." Lukan''s ears perked up. "I''m not following. How were those skills related?" "Think about it," Nora gestured expressively, warmth creeping back into her voice. "It''s like two sides of the same coin¡ªone skill pushes out, the other pulls in." She traced opposing spirals in the air, illustrating the concept. "Like breathing¡ªyou can''t just inhale or just exhale forever." Her eyes lit up as pieces clicked together in her mind. "Yesterday was about physical power. Today?" Her voice softened. "The dreamscape ripped open my thoughts, made me face the most private parts of myself..." "Which we''ve now all seen in vivid detail," Lukan interjected with a wry smile, his momentary awkwardness transforming into gentle teasing. Nora rolled her eyes but couldn''t suppress a small smile. "My point is, the pattern holds, this challenge pushed me to protect myself from within. The next should be about connecting outward¡ªbeyond myself." Lukan cleared his throat abruptly, the sound breaking the tense air like a snapped string. A slight cough followed as if he was trying to force away both the awkwardness and a sudden lump in their throat. "Oh, uh, ahem... That I''ve noticed," said Lukan. "So, I think the next challenge will demand me to reach outward," said Nora. "And among my skills, there are several that fit the bill. Emotional Influence, Energy Sharing, Sensory Enhancement, and Telepathic Communication. I guess I''ll just have to try!" "If anything happens, please try them one after another as soon as possible!" said Lukan. "Well, I''m sure you''ll understand if it takes some time," said Nora, her voice still unsteady after her recent experience, her words coming out slightly higher-pitched than usual. She kept her gaze fixed on the path ahead, unable to meet Lukan''s eyes. "But then, I really hope it would differ from the first challenge as much as the challenge of fire differed from that puzzle where my Enhanced Physical Strength skill appeared so useful!" Lukan couldn''t help but feel a blush spread across his cheeks, even under his fur, every time he was remanded about the recent spectacle. "I''m not a prude, you know." Lukan''s ears flattened slightly as he rubbed the back of his neck. "It just was a bit¡ unexpected. I didn''t know where to look¡" "Ha-ha, I hope you at least liked the display in the end." Nora''s teasing smile didn''t quite reach her eyes, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt, shoulders still tense and slightly hunched as if bracing for another wave of exposure. Lukan''s posture relaxed as he recognized her attempt to diffuse the tension. "You passed this challenge with flying colors." A hint of admiration crept into his voice. "I may have complained, but you reacted remarkably fast." He gestured toward the path she''d created. "Most mages I''ve known¡ªtrained ones with years of practice¡ªfreeze under that kind of pressure. You just... adapted." "Ah¡" Nora tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, glancing away. "You''re just saying that to make me feel less mortified." "Truth is truth." Lukan offered his palm, an invitation rather than a demand. "Ready for whatever''s next?" As Nora and Lukan ventured deeper into the dreamscape, the air grew heavier with the scent of ozone and something sweet like overripe fruit. Goosebumps prickled across Nora''s skin as strange, ethereal creatures emerged from the mist. These beings floated through the air with a sound like distant wind chimes or slithered along the shimmering ground, leaving trails of luminescence that tingled when stepped upon. Their forms felt both solid and incorporeal when they brushed against her¡ªlike touching static electricity given substance. Some resembled shadowy animals with eyes that glowed like molten copper, giving off faint warmth when they stared too long. In contrast, others manifested as abstract shapes that twisted and morphed with a sound like silk sliding over steel. "Is it something you ever saw before?" asked Nora. "I''ve never seen beings like that." "No, it definitely isn''t anything normal," said Lukan. "I''ve never even heard about anything like that. But then, I''ve never heard about this kind of trials either." At first, these creatures merely observed from a distance, hovering in place or moving about aimlessly. However, the closer Nora and Lukan got, the more the beings began to shift and react to the presence of the intruders, blocking the path, swirling around Nora and Lukan in agitated circles, or hissing softly with unspoken warnings. The air felt thicker, and the vibrant colors of the dreamscape dimmed as if the space itself was becoming unsettled. They were not mere obstacles; they were part of the dreamscape, linked to its core in some way. Nora''s instincts told her they needed to do more than just navigate around these beings¡ªthey needed to understand them, communicate, and possibly influence their behavior to progress. "Lukan, these creatures¡" she said, hesitation in her voice. "I don''t think we can just force our way through. They''re connected to this place. We need to talk to them somehow." Lukan studied the creatures warily, his tail flicking as he considered their options. "Talk to them?" he asked. "How do you suggest we do that? They don''t look like they''re in the mood for conversation. If they even are sentient. That''s yet to be determined. And what even makes you think that?" "I don''t know!" exclaimed Nora. "And that''s exactly the thing! All these strange feelings overwhelm me every time I face a new challenge. I can try using logic but then, it ends up with just doing what feels right. It''s almost like it isn''t me choosing a skill, but a skill insisting on being used! I never had that kind of sensations before¡" Chapter 10. The Balance Within Lukan carefully navigated the kitchen, ducking under the low beams and squeezing himself between the tables and the cupboards while searching for ingredients to make dinner. He tiptoed around Nora, who still seemed deeply immersed in her experience. The woman sat motionless on a wooden chair by the window. She didn''t even notice Lukan''s fur brushing against her body when he moved around. She''s been there since the moment they left the trial grounds and came to this cottage to have some food. The experience of both challenges was overwhelming, even for Lukan. And that''s while he didn''t have the capabilities to sense the full onslaught of the dreamscape and the beings that inhabited it. For Lukan, it was only wisps of emotions and sensations. Of course, he could see the things that manifested visually, like in the first part of the trial. Watching Nora''s sensual moments and dreams being recreated in such a vivid way was a powerful experience. A bit disturbing. But he could only imagine what it meant for her. The second challenge was different in so many ways, but Lukan could see how much effort and will it took Nora to brave through it. To go through the skills one by one and finally find the right pair. Now, he watched Nora with concerned eyes, trying to understand if there was a way to help her get through this introspection. Of course, he was there with Nora for the trials. But so much obviously happened within her mind and soul. He had an opportunity to glimpse only small bits and fragments of the woman''s internal challenges. Nora remained lost in her own thoughts. Still not responding to his gentle inquiries. To this moment, the whole experience was bizarre. Lukan showed Nora his brave face, but the moment fire first touched his fur, Lukan was almost ready to run. Only the fact that he held Nora''s hand at that moment made him stay. Grounded him. Reminded that they are there to support each other. Just a few days ago, Lukan was minding his business, moving between gigs, traveling between towns. As a builder, he didn''t have the choice to settle down in one place. When one contract ended, he had to find another. A new place to earn money, a new project to fulfill. Never even considering putting roots down. But now, he was taken¡ or abducted by unknown forces. He met this strange woman who knew so much and, strangely, so little about everyday life. Was it fate? Divine intervention? Lukan knew about magic. Well, he knew about magic existing in his world. But rarely experienced it besides interactions with herbalists or healers. That was usually the most one could expect to see in the countryside. Proper magic was for the large cities, high politics, and legendary battles. Nora¡ She excited Lukan on some unexpected level. She felt different, as if she didn''t belong here. Not only to this magical construct, but¡ here. It was hard to pinpoint that feeling. Put it to words. And she seemed to overturn all his expectations. What was apparent was that Nora was ready to go through any challenges the magic of this place wanted to throw at her. She mentioned that she had ten skills, a bizarre number as everyone knew that Apprentices always had only four skills. Earlier, Lukan didn''t even believe Nora''s words. But now, when the four challenges were done, and Nora used four different skills, it didn''t feel like they were leaving the trial grounds any time soon. There had to be more challenges awaiting them and more skills Nora had to use. *** As she sat at the wooden table in the cottage they had designated as the kitchen, Nora''s mind continued to spin with emotions, thoughts, and doubts from the second trial. She absentmindedly stirred a spoonful of honey into her hot herbal tea, feeling its soothing warmth spread through her body. The scent of pine wafted in through the open window, and Nora took a deep breath, finding a small sense of peace in this cozy retreat. "That was¡ a lot," she finally said, glancing at Lukan. "What do you think?" "I can see that you were overwhelmed," said Lukan with a smile. "I tried to start a conversation with you for half an hour already. I even went away to check the area once again." "Huh? Did you find anything interesting?" asked Nora. "As a matter of fact, I did," said Lukan, his excitement showing. "Someone¡ªor something¡ªhas been here while we were gone." Lukan set down a loaf of bread he was preparing to bite, his ears flicking toward the window. The fur on his arms bristled slightly as he looked without. But the only movement is the swaying of the pines in the wind. "Oh, there''s nothing there¡" he muttered. "That''s¡ I don''t know if that''s unsettling or comforting," Nora said with a sigh. "So, how did you figure that out?" "The food''s been replaced," Lukan answered, gesturing toward several crates and baskets. "But there''s still no sign of anyone. How is that possible?" Nora nodded, her gaze falling on a small stack of food crates that hadn''t been there before. The supplies they used earlier had been replenished, and the unknown benefactor even considered their tastes. Fresh bread, fruits, and even some meat were piled in a neat arrangement, as though an unseen hand had ensured their comfort during the trials. "So, we are obviously watched here," said Nora. "If they brought the things we enjoyed more. It starts to feel like a reality show." "I wouldn''t even ask," said Lukan, grinning. "You love using strange phrases and words. I hope you''ll tell me more about all of that in the future, though." "So, how was it?" asked Lukan after a brief pause. "Did anything change for you after the trial ended?" Nora''s hand trembled slightly as she stirred her tea. Her gaze lingered on the steam curling upward, as though searching for answers in its delicate spirals. If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. "All this magic¡" Nora said. "All these skills. There were some changes there. It follows the same pattern as the last time." She brought up the System menu in front of her eyes once again. === Updated Skills === Dream Manipulation: 5.0% (+5.0%) Telepathic Communication: 5.0% (+5.0%) === Skills === Aura Defences: 5.0% Dream Manipulation: 5.0% Emotional Influence: 0.0% Empathic Sensing: 0.0% Energy Sharing: 0.0% Enhanced Physical Strength: 5.0% Healing: 0.0% Sensory Enhancement: 0.0% Sexual Magic: 0.0% Telepathic Communication: 5.0% "This time, I had Dream Manipulation and Telepathic Communication both bumped by five percent," Nora said. "Six skills left." "You know, I didn''t really believe you in the beginning," said Lukan. "When you mentioned that you only got your first magical skills, but already have ten of them." "How so?" said Nora. "But¡ I guess¡ Sumi was also surprised." "Well, where I come from, every child knows you first get only four skills," said Lukan. "And only after you progress and learn more, you get additional magical skills. I don''t know about that, though. It''s hard to find anyone beyond the Apprentice level. Especially someone who''d want to talk about that to people without magic." "So, do you know anything about the initial progress?" asked Nora. "Does it always happen like this? With a 5% increase each time? Or is it different for every skill?" She turned to Lukan, hoping he could shed some light on the matter. "I''m sorry, Nora," he said. "I can''t tell you much beyond what you already know. The aspects of magical skills are rarely discussed with non-practitioners. It''s mostly just rumors and legends." "And I thought every child knows these things," said Nora with a chuckle, softly punching Lukan''s shoulder. Lukan smiled, but then his brows furrowed in concentration. "I''ve never heard of such detailed knowledge of skills and their statuses before," he said. "I''ve only heard people talking about it as vague feelings that allowed them to use the skills intuitively, but not to tell exactly their uses and limitations." Nora''s eyes widened in surprise. "Really? So, I''m special?" Nora said smiling. "We should keep that in mind for future experiments then." She continued reading the System information, where more of the quest description was revealed. "Looks like we''re making progress," she remarked with a small smile. "I have more information about the quest revealed. " Lukan stood up and began pacing around the kitchen. He touched the pot with tea and then returned it to the stove. As Lukan moved to clear the table, he paused, carefully nudging Nora''s cup to a safer spot when her absentminded stirring sent ripples to the rim. She glanced up, catching his small act of care, and smiled faintly. "Sorry, Nora, but what is a quest?" Lukan said, visibly losing his composure. "You are so¡ not fitting everything I knew about life, about how everything works. I was startled by being pushed into this place with you. But you sort of grow up thinking that magical things will eventually happen to you. Even if the probability isn''t very high." "Oh, I can feel you. It''s all quite overwhelming," Nora sighed, warming hands with her mug of herbal tea. "How to explain that¡? Sumi mentioned that what I have is different. I have more skills, and I have some other things¡ Including quests. And I''m as lost as you are. I don''t know why it works differently for me." Nora called out the relevant System menu. "Among other things, I have some notion of the goals I need to achieve in the future," she said. "They are called quests. Did you ever hear about anything like that?" "No, I never heard about any quests¡" said Lukan. "Maybe people get them at higher levels?" "Maybe¡ How would I know¡?" said Nora, pouting. "So, you have a quest?" asked Lukan. "What does it say to you?" "One of them is related to these trials," said Lukan. "It hints that there are five of them, ten challenges in total. The name of the quest is pretty telling. Also, I know that we have completed 40% of the trials. And that tracks, as we have just finished our second challenge here." She read the description of the quest aloud. === Quest: Overcome the Five Trials === The Guardian has set you on the Path of Five Trials. Each trial will help you to use two skills and improve them. To pass each of the trials, you will have to find a balance between these two skills. So, choose wisely. Rewards: A mate??? Completion: 40% "Oh, so it changed a bit," said Nora. "Now I have more info!" "What did it say before?" asked Lukan. "There were more parts left out," Nora explained. "Like this part with the ''mate.'' I still don''t know what it means." "But it sort of confirms what we had already figured out," said Lukan. "That you have to find pairs of the skills. And, yes, you get them improved." Lukan stopped pacing and sat across the table from Nora. "So, you have to figure out things to get your quests revealed in full," said Lukan. "That''s neat. But also, the guidance of this quest system seems very limited." "At least it gives me the entry point," sighed Nora. "It''s much more than what I had in my previous life, before magic." "That''s how I feel on a daily basis," said Lukan with a smile. "So, you mentioned there are two quests?" "Yes," said Nora. "And the other one isn''t less cryptic." === Quest: Unite the world with Love === The Goddess of Love has made you the Chosen One. To ??? you need to ??? and ???. Rewards: ??? "What the fuck!?" Lukan exclaimed, his voice full of incredulous surprise. "A Chosen One? Seriously? I mean, come on! I was hoping your explanation would clear things up, not make them ten times more confusing. How the hell did you end up as a Chosen One of all things?" "I wish I knew," said Nora. "Well, it could explain your additional abilities," said Lukan. "Being a Chosen One isn''t unheard of. But it''s something out of legends. Or rumors." "So, do you know anything about it?" asked Nora. "It''s even harder to separate truth from myth with the Chosen Ones," said Lukan. "It''s not like you meet them every day. Sometimes a few generations pass between two people who were chosen by a god or a goddess. At least if we expect all of them to be known to the public." "I guess I''ll have to figure it out on my own¡" said Nora. "At least I''m on an almost even field with most of people." "I can be there for you," said Lukan. "If you let me. I saw you handling four challenges already. And I''m sure you''ll figure out the other six in no time!" "Thank you for your vote of confidence, Lukan," said Nora. "It means a lot. And I''d be happy to discuss that with you¡ after we finish the trials." "So, tonight we rest," said Lukan. "What''s the plan for tomorrow?" Chapter 11. Emotional Influence Nora awoke to the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze and the distant chirping of songbirds. She stretched languidly on the soft bedroll, her mind still hazy with the remnants of dreams. The events of the trials replayed in her mind''s eye¡ªthe heart-pounding challenges, the electrifying moment when her magic surged to new heights, and the profound connection she felt with Lukan as they faced each obstacle together. The emotional rollercoaster of the trials had left her both exhilarated and exhausted. The faint, melodic tinkling of pots and pans spread over the area, signaling that Lukan had already woken up and moved to the kitchen. The tantalizing aroma of spices and herbs wafted through the air, reaching even to the cabin where they slept. Nora got up slowly, breathing in the crisp morning air. The area surrounding the mystical arch was tranquil, the absolute opposite of what happened on the other side of the veil. A strange warmth spread through her limbs as Nora raised to her feet, like sunlight spilling into her veins. Her fingertips tingled faintly, and she could feel the hum of energy just beneath her skin, a reminder of the magic she had only recently awakened. It wasn''t intrusive but alive, waiting for her command. As the sun climbed higher in the sky, Nora made her way to the kitchen where Lukan had already worked with practiced efficiency, his tail swaying in rhythm with a low hum. He plucked a handful of herbs from a hanging bundle, rolling the leaves between his fingers before tossing them into the pot with a flourish. The scent of rosemary and sage curled into the air, blending with the earthy aroma of simmering vegetables. "Good morning," Lukan greeted her with a warm smile, his green eyes crinkling at the corners. "I hope you slept well." Nora returned the smile, settling at the table. "Better than I have in a long time," she admitted, accepting a steaming mug of tea. "But it took some time for me to calm down. After all the tribulations of the previous day." "Hear me out," said Lukan. "What if we take a day off today?" Nora started to protest, but Lukan signed that he wanted to explain himself. "We obviously have plenty of food here," he said. "They even replenished our stocks yesterday. So, no one is pushing us to go through it as fast as possible." "But what about Sumi?" asked Nora. "She''s probably losing her mind, not knowing why I disappeared." "That''s a valid concern," said Lukan. "But if you fail a trial because you weren''t ready and didn''t focus well enough, that wouldn''t help us to get back to her as soon as possible either. You''ve already got through four out of ten challenges. Let''s slow down just a little bit." Nora sipped her tea, savoring the warmth and the subtle herbal flavor. Despite the initial reservations, Lukan''s suggestion of a day off resonated with her. The trials had been intense, both physically and emotionally. Even more so emotionally. The previous day''s dreamscape overturned something deep within her. Made her feel both vulnerable and strong. She couldn''t deny the appeal of taking a moment to breathe, to process all that had happened. The vulnerability she felt was a stark reminder of her humanity in the face of the trials. "Alright," she conceded, meeting Lukan''s gaze. "A day off it is. But just one day. I don''t want to lose momentum." Trial 3: The Hall of Echoes That''s how, only in the early morning of the fourth day of their trial, Nora and Lukan approached the grand arch once again. The once proud stone structure was now covered in thick vines, giving it an eerie appearance. The leaves rustled softly, almost as if whispering to each other. Soft whispers spread from behind the veil, both luring and discouraging them. Nora took a deep breath, feeling a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. "The main goal today is to test our theories about the skill pairings," she said. "The quest sort of confirms that, but we still have to figure out the details. I need to balance the skills again." Lukan raised an eyebrow, his ears twitching with curiosity. "So, what''s the plan this time?" As they stepped through the doors, they were greeted by a vast hall filled with shifting shadows and flickering lights. The walls seemed to hum with an unseen energy, and the air was thick with the murmur of countless voices, each carrying a different emotion. Nora felt a tug at her heart, a strange mix of sadness, joy, anger, and fear swirling around her. She glanced at Lukan, who was looking around with a mixture of wonder and wariness. "This place feels...weird," Lukan said, his voice echoing slightly. "What do you think we need to do here?" Nora pondered for a moment, testing the sensations inhibited by the hall. "I think we need to influence these emotions and heal the life forms left behind," she said. "And I probably know which skill is suited for that." Lukan nodded, his eyes glinting with determination. "So, what should it be?" Nora''s eyes narrowed in concentration as she reached out with her mind, grasping at the swirling emotions around her. She tapped into her Emotional Influence skill, feeling the hall respond to her touch. The voices grew louder, their emotions becoming more pronounced¡ªfear, anger, sorrow. Lukan watched Nora intently, his eyes filled with curiosity and admiration for her power. "What do you feel?" he asked, voice hushed in awe. "Can you do anything about it?" Nora furrowed her brow, delving deeper into the sea of emotions. "There''s so much pain here," she murmured, almost overwhelmed by the intensity. "We need to calm the emotions and heal the wounds." But she couldn''t ignore the nagging fear that they would respond with anger. When she erroneously chose this skill last time, the beings that inhabited the dreamscape overwhelmed her and made her feel the worst fear and despair. "It wouldn''t stop me," whispered Nora. "This time, I''m sure I''m choosing the right skill." Gathering her strength and focus, Nora began to weave her influence through the hall. She could feel the shadows shifting and dancing around her, responding to her magic. The light grew steadier and warmer as she calmed the angry whispers and soothed the sorrowful murmurs. Slowly but surely, a sense of peace settled over the hall, replacing the tumultuous emotions that had once dominated it. As they ventured deeper into the grand hall, a haunting sight met their eyes. Strange, plant-like figures stood before them, covered in sores and wounds. They swayed faintly, their limbs twisted and gnarled like ancient roots pulled from the ground. Their translucent bodies glowed faintly, revealing dark veins of decay spidering beneath the surface. A low, mournful creak echoed from them as they moved. A wave of emotions covered Nora¡ Pain¡? Was it pain? How could these¡ plants... even feel any pain at all? Nora felt a hollow ache rise in her chest, a reflection of their suffering that pressed heavily on her heart. Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site. Suddenly, as if a sixth sense revealed to Nora: these were echoes of past traumas and unresolved emotions, manifested in physical form. Nora couldn''t tell why she was so sure about it, but with her whole being, she knew she needed more than just her influence to overcome the challenges ahead; she needed to heal these wounded beings and restore them to peace. "Lukan, we must help them," she said urgently, reaching out with her hands toward one of the figures. "Can you help me with your attention? Focus on something?" Lukan nodded, stepping closer with an eager determination. "Just tell me what I have to do." Nora placed her hands on one of the twisted figures and felt a wave of cold, aching pain radiate through her fingertips. But she pushed through it, closing her eyes and calling upon her powerful Healing skill to soothe and mend. A warm light glowed from her hands as she channeled her energy to heal. Lukan watched in awe as the injuries slowly faded away under Nora''s touch. "Incredible," he whispered, his eyes wide with wonder. "How can I help?" Nora smiled gratefully at him, feeling his mere presence strengthening her own focus. "Just stay by my side. You being here helps me channel my power. It''s all support I need at this moment." As they worked together, Lukan stayed close, his presence a steadying force. When Nora faltered, overwhelmed by the pain radiating from the figures, he placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip firm but gentle. She glanced at Lukan, her resolve bolstered by the quiet strength in his green eyes. Without a word, they moved in tandem, their unspoken connection guiding them through the challenge. It was so until they reached the very end, where they found an enormous mirror standing before them. Its ornately carved frame loomed over the whole chamber like a watchful guardian. However, as they approached, their reflections began to blur and distort, revealing the depths of their inner selves. Nora''s image flickered between fierce determination and a raw vulnerability that she had never seen before. Those were aftershocks of her experiences during the second trial. For a brief moment, she was unsure if it was indeed her own image or a reflection of someone else entirely. The mirror''s surface rippled like liquid silver, distorting their reflections into fractured mosaics. Nora''s image flickered¡ªone moment fierce and resolute, the next raw and exposed, her eyes glistening with unspoken fears. It was as though the mirror was peeling back the layers of her soul, laying bare every vulnerability and strength she carried within. Lukan came to stand by her side, his reflection showing a mix of curiosity and unwavering loyalty. "What do we do now?" Nora reached out tentatively, her fingers brushing against the cool surface of the mirror. "We need to find balance within ourselves and heal our wounds." With closed eyes, she focused on the storm raging inside her and the tangled mess of emotions that threatened to consume her. But with Lukan''s presence beside her, his unwavering support grounding her, they channeled their powers together. Using Emotional Influence to calm their inner turmoil and Healing to mend their hearts. This time, the skills worked in tandem to help bring peace to others and within themselves. As Nora approached the mirror, she noticed that its surface shined and glimmered. As she watched, the reflections became more defined and harmonious. The once dimly lit hall now brightened and any lingering shadows dissipated, leaving behind a sense of peace. Ultimately, a familiar chime sounded, and a new opening appeared in the distance. The third trial was done. *** Nora and Lukan were once again standing near the shimmering arch, leaving one more trial behind. Despite the doubts and uncertainties that still lingered in their minds, they slowly grew accustomed to the bizarre routine of the challenges. Lukan''s canine grin was infectious, his tail wagging with unbridled excitement. "We make a pretty good team, don''t we?" he exclaimed. Nora couldn''t help but smile, feeling a strong sense of camaraderie with her companion. "You bet we do," she replied confidently. "Now, I have no doubt that we''ll be ready for whatever comes next. And you seem to be quite excited as well!" The comment made Lukan glance behind his back. "Ah, that¡" he said. "I usually do a better job of concealing my emotions. But, as a matter of fact, yes, I am excited. We''ve done two-thirds of this trial, and I can almost smell you getting us a win soon!" "So, what do you think? Should we keep the schedule we agreed upon yesterday?" asked Nora. "Should we make breaks between the trials?" "That''s for you to say, Nora," answered Lukan. "You are doing most of the lifting. I''m just a support guy." "Well, today''s trial wasn''t too taxing and exhausting," Nora said, deliberating. "But we don''t know what happens next. Let''s rest tomorrow." "Then rest it is!" said Lukan. "I saw some really nice stuff delivered to us recently. I should prepare a real feast for you!" "Awww!" exclaimed Nora. "You are spoiling me!" However, before moving to the kitchen to prepare their dinner, Nora reached for her stats to check the progress. === Updated Skills === Emotional Influence: 6.0% (+6.0%) Healing: 4.0% (+4.0%) Nora''s brow furrowed as she stared at the numbers on the report. "A six percent increase instead of five? But why?" she questioned, her mind racing to find a logical explanation. Lukan, always quick to engage in intellectual banter with Nora, chimed in. "Did you notice any difference in using the skill?" "No, I can''t say that I did," Nora replied, lost in thought. "Every trial is draining in one way or another. And demands my full concentration. But...there was something different about using Emotional Influence during these challenges." "What do you mean?" Lukan asked. "It was the only time since the beginning of the trials that I felt conflicted about using this skill on live beings without their consent," Nora admitted hesitantly. "We had no way to communicate with them, and that made it even harder for me to go through with it." "And the four percent," continued Lukan, "You mentioned that this Guardian was fixated on balancing everything. It would be only logical if he wanted to make you notice something, to take away the points to keep the total score even." "I hope we''ll get some answers next time we talk to the Guardian," said Nora, heading to the cabins. "But the hopes are not too high¡ªlast time he was very circumvent about so many things¡!" As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the kitchen, Nora and Lukan sat at the table, sipping steaming mugs of herbal tea. The air was thick with the comforting scent of freshly baked bread and simmering stew. They shared stories of their past lives, leaning in close as if they were conspirators in a secret plot. Lukan watched Nora with admiration as she recounted her experiences. "You seem to handle these trials so well," he remarked, his eyes studying her face. Nora chuckled softly, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. "I don''t know about that. Back home, I was just trying to get by. I was always buried in work, constantly fighting to prove myself in a field dominated by men. It wasn''t easy." She paused, memories flooding back, and she took another sip of tea before continuing. "But I suppose it prepared me for this new journey," Nora continued. As she explained the gender dynamics in her world, Lukan''s ears perked up and his brow furrowed in confusion. He couldn''t imagine a society where men were considered superior just because of their gender. "Wait, what?" Lukan said. "Your world? You said you''re from far away. Now you are telling me you are not from here at all?" "I thought you''d guess already," said Nora. "After I was so clueless on so many basic aspects of life here." "Well, I thought you lived in some secluded village or whatever," said Lukan. "But then, I can''t say anything surprises me anymore. I just hope you''ll tell me more about your world at some moment in the future. It''s intriguing. Anyway, what you mean by that your work prepared you for these challenges. You said you didn''t have magic!" Nora let out a heavy sigh and gazed up at the sky, lost in thought. "I didn''t. Our whole worlds doesn''t have any magic. But¡ It was tough being a woman in my field," she said, her voice tinged with frustration. "Men held most of the power and made most of the decisions. It was like they automatically assumed they were better or more capable just because they were men." Lukan''s ears perked up, and his tail stiffened as he processed what Nora had just said. His green eyes widened, filled with disbelief. "Wait, hold up," he said, his voice tinged with confusion. "Men are considered better just because they''re men? What kind of backwards thinking is that?" Nora rubbed her temples, feeling the weight of years of frustration rise to the surface. "I know, right? It sounds ridiculous to me too, but¡ that''s how it''s been for centuries." She sighed, trying to find the words. "Where I''m from, it''s not about who''s better at what¡ªit''s about who''s holding the power. And guess what? Men have been doing that for a long time." The corner of Lukan''s mouth lifted in a genuine smile, creasing the edges of his crystal blue eyes. "Well, here," he gestured to their surroundings, "you''re seen for more than just your physical appearance. Your strength, intelligence, and kindness are what make you truly extraordinary, Nora." Nora felt her cheeks flush with warmth at his words, and she couldn''t help but smile back at him. "Thank you, Lukan. That means a lot coming from you." Chapter 12. Awkward! (E - on Patreon) It was another pleasant evening after a day of trials and challenges. The golden light of the setting sun draped across the trial grounds, turning the wooden cabins into silhouettes against a sky of burning orange and dusky violet. The distant hum of insects filled the air, blending with the occasional chirp of birds roosting in the surrounding trees. A warm breeze rustled through the leaves, carrying the earthy scent of sun-warmed wood and the faint spice of whatever meal Lukan had left simmering in the kitchen. === Updated Skills === Energy Sharing: 5.0% (+5.0%) Sensory Enhancement: 5.0% (+5.0%) If it was a simulation, it was really good. If this place was created¡ summoned¡ built¡ specifically for Nora''s trials, it was an impressive feat of magic. Not that Nora was an expert in these matters. She wiped the sweat from her brow and beamed at Lukan. "Another day, two more challenges done, and only two left!" she exclaimed, softly punching Lukan''s furry shoulder. "We are doing great!" "You''re the one doing all the flashy magic," said Lukan with a wide smile. "I''m just the guy making sure you don''t trip over yourself." "Not true!" said Nora. "You did almost half of the work providing me the baseline for using the skills. Without that, it would be ten times harder for me to figure out the right approach! Face it. You''ve been a very good assistant." "Oh, well. If you say so," Lukan said, dramatically placing his hand over his chest. "But where I''d be really useful is in the kitchen. I''m sure you wouldn''t like to miss the dinner, right? Let''s see what our mysterious benefactors left for us this time." "I''m starving!" said Nora. "I''d eat a cow!" "Well, I''m not sure we have a cow here," answered Lukan. "But I wouldn''t be surprised if our kind hosts replenished the stocks once again. Maybe there would be something else that will make you happy." As Nora and Lukan walked toward their kitchen cabin, they continued to discuss the day''s events. They compared the fresh experiences with what happened during the previous trials. After the constant feeling of overwhelm, it seemed that Nora was finally getting acclimated to this new life. To using magic on almost daily basis. "You know," she said. "We checked out two more skills from my list today." "It seems that''s how this trial works," agreed Lukan. "Where are you leading?" "It means¡" Nora sighed. "It means that there are only two skills left." "Ah¡" Lukan nodded his understanding. "We are getting to that skill." "Two skills left," Nora murmured, eyeing her list as though it might suddenly change. "Empathic Sensing and¡" she groaned, dragging a hand down her face. "¡Sexual Magic." Lukan blinked. "Oh. That is a choice." "Yeah, no kidding," Nora muttered, scuffing her boot against the dirt and sending a pebble flying into a nearby bush. "I barely got through the Dreamscape trial with all that happened there, and now I have to use something called Sexual Magic? Just¡ªwhy." "Well, it''s a skill, right? Maybe it''s less about¡" he cleared his throat, suddenly very interested in a tree nearby. "¡you know, and more about¡ magical energy stuff?" "If it turns out I have to ''magically'' seduce someone to pass," said Nora." I swear I''m going to haunt the Guardian for the rest of eternity." "Whatever you do," said Lukan. "I''m sure you''ll find the right use for it!" He messed Nora''s ginger hair. "Look, let me pamper you a bit tomorrow," Lukan said. "I''ll boil plenty of water for you to have a bath. I''ll prepare you some nice food. You''ll relax. And then nothing will stop you during the final trial! Does that sound like a good plan to you?" "It does. Thank you Lukan," said Nora. "You are just too kind." And that was exactly how they spent the next day. Nora relaxed, and Lukan treated her like the highest nobility he could imagine. *** Finding the opposing aspects of Empathic Sensing and Sexual Magic was what Lukan and Nora discussed as they confidently stepped through the arch and entered the final arena. Nora''s heart raced with anticipation as she recalled their earlier discussions and recounted the situations in which Nora had to use her other skills. Their working theory was that Empathic Sensing required a deep understanding of others'' emotions. On the other hand, Sexual Magic probably involved actively utilizing sexual energy for creation or manipulation. But all of that was only a guess. Now, they would have to put these ideas to the test. Still, who was Nora going to influence with this Sexual Magic? Lukan? A person she had started developing a friendly connection with? Yikes! Still, Lukan remained his supportive self. "If there''s something you need to do to me to pass these challenges, I give you permission," he said." Just let me know if anything goes wrong. I have a feeling it''ll be something different this time around. In the past, I was mostly just there as backup for the trials. It wasn''t until the final one that I had a more active role. So maybe this time, I''ll reprise my support role." "I hope so," Nora replied with a hopeful tone. Or should it be herself? The test subject? Or some other beings? Like it happened during other challenges. There was only one way to find out. Trial 5: The Empath''s Chamber The chamber breathed. Not literally, but the walls pulsed in a slow, rhythmic motion as if the very space around them was alive. Shadows slithered along the curved archways, shifting between solid and transparent like mist caught in candlelight. Whispers rose from the darkness¡ªsoft, coaxing, intimate. Some murmured in longing, others in quiet anguish, their voices curling around Nora''s ears like unseen fingers. A deep ache settled in her chest, an emotion not entirely hers. "Okay," Nora said, exhaling sharply. "That''s definitely unsettling." Lukan''s ears flicked, his fur bristling slightly. "Even I can feel it," he murmured, his voice unusually quiet. "Like it''s¡ waiting for something." "Yeah, there''s definitely a powerful vibe here," Nora nodded, attuning herself to the swirling emotions in the air." All my senses are on high alert. Including what I feel with magic. It''s strange¡ I''m still getting used to all of that¡ And we know for sure this trial is about Empathic Sensing and Sexual Magic." "So, how should we begin?" asked Lukan. *** As they ventured deeper into the chamber, Nora and Lukan were greeted by a dazzling display of intricate symbols etched into the walls and floor. Each mark seemed to radiate with its own unique energy, pulsating in a mesmerizing rhythm. Nora didn''t even have to do anything. Her Empathic Sensing kicked in automatically, allowing her to literally see the emotions emanating from the symbols. Her mind was flooded with a wave of feelings, each one represented by a different symbol. Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings. "These symbols are like emotional conduits," she exclaimed, awestruck by their power. "We need to tap into them somehow. But at least this challenge isn''t about Sexual Magic. We are starting with the easy stuff." Lukan''s eyes widened as he stepped closer to one of the symbols. "They don''t seem familiar," he said." But if you say it''s the easy stuff, I believe you. So, what do we need to do?" Taking a deep breath, Nora closed her eyes and focused all her senses on the symbols. She could feel their magnetic pull, drawing her in and connecting her to the emotions they represented. With each passing moment, she felt more attuned to their energy. "On the second thought¡" said Nora." Maybe I''m wrong. I feel more powers at play here. Let me try connecting with the symbols first, sensing the emotions. And then I''ll use my Sexual Magic to transform them," she explained, her voice laced with determination and excitement. Lukan watched Nora in complete disbelief. "How do you even know all of that?!?" "Right? That''s just insane!" exclaimed Nora. "That''s what I''ve been thinking all this time. But at least, I don''t have any chance to listen to my imposters syndrome. If I don''t do that, we wouldn''t return to the real world!" Nora took a deep breath and approached the first symbol, a swirling vortex of deep crimson. As she touched it, a wave of intense anger washed over her, nearly knocking her off balance. She gritted her teeth, fighting to maintain control. "What is it?" Lukan asked, concern evident in his voice. "Rage," Nora replied, her voice strained. "Pure, unfiltered rage. It''s... overwhelming." She closed her eyes, focusing on the roiling emotions coursing through her. Drawing upon her newly acquired Sexual Magic, she envisioned channeling that fiery anger into something else¡ªpassion, desire, intensity. The symbol beneath her fingers began to pulse, its color shifting from angry red to a deep, sensual purple. Nora moved along to the next symbol. It pulsed with a soft blue light, radiating waves of melancholy. A jolt of sadness coursed through her body as she reached out to touch it. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. "Whoa," she gasped. "That''s intense." Lukan hovered nearby, concern etched on his face. "Are you alright? What happened?" "I''m fine," Nora assured him, wiping her eyes. "Just got hit with a big dose of sadness from that symbol. But I think I know what to do now." She closed her eyes, focusing on the melancholy energy swirling within her. Drawing on her newfound Sexual Magic, she embraced it and lived through it. Explored the sadness to its fullness and used it as an inspiration. The symbols pulsed and swirled around her, each one a swirling vortex of raw emotion. She felt waves of joy, sorrow, anger, and desire wash over her in dizzying succession. Moving between them was like jumping between natural springs. One was cold, another was hot, the third was salty, and the next was sweet. Each symbol added something to Nora''s being, tuning her better and better to use her Sexual Magic skill. Nora''s breath caught in her throat as she took in the scene before her. The sheer magnitude of it all was overwhelming, causing her knees to wobble and weaken. Without hesitation, Lukan''s steady hand came to rest on her shoulder, providing much-needed support and sending a jolt of energy through Nora''s body. Lukan watched her intently, sensing her being entirely immersed in her feelings, in the magic of this place. "What do you feel, Nora?" Nora opened her eyes, her gaze steady. "I can feel everything ¨C all the emotions in this room. It''s like they''re alive, waiting to be transformed." She hesitated. "But¡ Something is missing," Nora continued, a realization dawning on her." It feels like there''s an ingredient¡ Something that isn''t present in the mix. And without it, I don''t think I''ll be able to perform the task¡!" "What is it?" prompted Lukan. Nora paused for a moment, looking at the supportive wolfkin. "I think this friendship we started building in these past days has to be the fulcrum of the process," she said, not even sure that Lukan''s support would go that far." I need to explore what you feel about this unusual place with my Empathic Sensing, pass it though myself and then manifest it with Sexual Magic. Moving from passive observation to some act of sexual creation. I know it''s a lot to ask, but are you ready to do that?" As Lukan spoke, he gently touched her shoulder and gave her a reassuring smile. "I said that before, and I''m ready to confirm it again and again. I''m still here with you," he said. "We need to get through this final trial together." His words filled her with determination and strength. "You''re learning so much about your skills and yourself," Lukan continued." But don''t think for a second that I''m not gaining anything from this experience as well. In just a few days, I''ve experienced more magic than in all my years as a native of this world. I''ll be telling the stories of these trials to my grandkids when I have them." "Okay, I don''t think you have to do much," said Nora." Just observe. Try to feel the flow of emotions emanating from the room. You mentioned that you begin to feel more and more what''s happening around you. The magic that swirls here. I''ll register what you sense with my skill and transform it with my Sexual Magic." Lukan nodded, standing in the center of the room and looking around with curiosity as Nora reached out with her senses. She felt his emotions¡ªa mix of friendship, trust, and a hint of something more. Lukan didn''t have any magic in him. Still, it seemed that the natural perception bolstered by the days of challenges allowed him to receive even the weakest signals from the chamber. It was enough. Nora just had to receive the data, transform and amplify it. Pass it through herself and become the final element of this challenge. Nora moved to the center of the chamber, surrounded by intricate symbols that glowed and pulsed with otherworldly energy. She closed her eyes and focused on her Empathic Sensing, allowing it to guide her towards Lukan''s emotions. The swirling emotions were becoming almost tangible, wrapping around her like a storm. Nora harnessed this raw energy, channeling it through her body and transforming it with her Sexual Magic. With an intake of breath, she felt being flooded with a powerful surge of sensual energy that deepened her connection to Lukan. All these feelings she explored moments ago were mixing together, modifying each other, influencing her, Lukan, and the space itself. It was overwhelming, but Nora reveled in the intense bond between her and Lukan as she explored his emotions directed towards her in return. With every minute, Nora''s breaths were coming in more and more shallow gasps. The intensity was almost unbearable. Beads of sweat now covered her forehead, and she felt perspiration in the other parts of her body. Her head felt heavy and then very light. She could feel her body reacting, her skin tingling, and her heart racing. Glancing at Lukan, who watched her with a mix of concern and curiosity, she knew he could sense it too. If not that intensely. "Nora, are you okay?" Lukan asked, his voice laced with worry. She clutched her chest, her breathing ragged. "Sexual Magic isn''t just desire¡ªit''s connection," she realized, the words slipping from her lips without thought. "It''s how emotions become something more." Lukan, watching her closely, nodded slowly. "Then maybe it''s not about¡ªuh¡ªthat part, but how you use it. Energy. Intent." Nora exhaled sharply, forcing herself to focus. "Right. It''s about channeling emotions into something transformative." Her fingers tingled, warmth pooling beneath her skin. The trial wasn''t testing lust. It was testing her ability to wield passion as power. She took a deep breath, struggling to hold back tears as she looked away from the insane intensity of the situation. Nora''s body was on high alert, the sensations intensifying and demanding her attention. Heat rose to her cheeks as desire pulsed through her blood. Her arousal was undeniable, a pooling wetness between her legs that demanded attention. Nora bit down on her lip, trying to hold back from giving in to the pleasure that threatened to consume her. She felt shy and embarrassed with Lukan standing nearby, even after the previous experiences and the way Lukan reacted to them in a very courteous manner. Still, the sensations were relentless, urging her towards release. Nora continued trying to bottle them up. To keep them under control. Within her mind, within her body. But with every passing second, the urge and the heat were becoming more and more intense, more visible, and more obvious even to Lukan. "Stay strong!" he exclaimed. "You can do that! Whatever you need to do, you can do that! Don''t mind me!" Nora couldn''t ignore the call any longer. The need to touch herself and find some relief. She parted her lips just a little bit, and a small moan escaped her mouth. She extended her fingers to touch her face in a daze, and a jolt of energy passed through her. With eyes closed, Nora focused on the overwhelming sensations coursing through her body, feeling every tiny movement of her clothing against her skin. It all was amplified. All these emotions that assaulted her moments ago were now thrown into the mix, only making Nora even more attuned to the magic pulsing through her. It was like a thousand delicate caresses, each one sending a wave of ecstasy through her. Battling the final remnants of hesitation and shyness, Nora couldn''t stop her hand trembling a bit as it reached up to brush against her breasts through her clothes. The simple touch sent a jolt of pleasure through her body, causing her to gasp. Her other hand touched the softness of her cheek, the familiarity of her palm, and then¡ found its way to her inner thigh until her fingers brushed against the slickness of wetness there¡ªa physical manifestation of the desire burning within her. "Quite lucky," Nora thought. "That I chose more cozy attire for this challenge. Wouldn''t be good to be so wet in leather breaches I had on my first day here." Sensing her need for privacy, Lukan took a step back, giving her space. He didn''t say a word, his presence a silent support. Still, despite this protective action, his emotions only intensified, amplifying what Nora received from the chamber, from the challenge. She was now fully immersed in this experience. Giving it her whole. Now, there was no stopping. Nora''s fingers moved with a sense of urgency, driven by the pulsing need within her. She could feel the wetness seeping through her clothes. Slowly, Nora opened her eyes, meeting Lukan''s concerned gaze. "Is everything¡ alright?" Lukan asked a moment later, his voice laced with genuine concern. Nora nodded, her weak smile revealing the exhaustion from the intense experience. "Yeah, I''m okay," she said." It was about lust as well, after all¡ That was... so intense." Lukan''s relieved smile mirrored her own. "You did it," he said. "You passed the trial. The final sound just chimed." Taking a deep breath, Nora could still feel the pulsing pleasure coursing through her body. "It did? Really?" she said." I didn''t hear it¡! "I can''t say I''m surprised," said Lukan. "You seemed to be very focused and¡ introspective." Chapter 13. Mating The square before the ancient arch felt eerily quiet. Too quiet. Where once a shimmering veil of radiant energy rippled like liquid starlight, now there was nothing but emptiness. The portal stood dormant, its surface stripped of its mystic glow, leaving behind jagged fractures running like spiderwebs through the once-pristine stone. The arch loomed like an ancient relic, every crack whispering tales of past trials. But now the old magic was gone. It was as if the portal was only one step away from the collapse, awaiting a final gust of wind to reduce it to dust. "So, we''ve successfully used all ten my skills now," Nora said, breaking the silence. "Does that mean our journey is coming to an end?" Lukan leaned back, a contemplative expression on his face. "Who am I to say?" he said. "It''s not like I''m a practitioner of magic. But it does feel like we''ve reached some kind of milestone. I¡ I feel a bit strange¡ I''d bet that something should happen now." Nora stared at the fractured portal, her chest tightening with the weight of everything that had happened. Just days ago, she had stumbled into this strange world. Nora was disoriented, and moments later, she had lost the only person who could be her guide here. Now, standing beside Lukan, an unexpected anchor, she could still feel the raw threads of magic woven into her very bones. What if this was just the beginning? The fear clawed at her, sharp and insistent, intermingling with a strange sensation of anticipation, whispering of responsibilities she didn''t yet understand. "I can¡ feel it too," she said slowly, still immersed in her introspection. "It''s like... I have a better understanding of my powers now and how to use them in harmony. Or¡ at least I made the first steps on that path." She looked at Lukan and gently touched his furry arm. "So, what about you? Do you feel any changes?" "I¡ I don''t even know how to explain it," Lukan stammered, his eyes wide. "It''s like¡ I can sense the heartbeat of this place. Every stone, every beam of wood. It''s all connected. I never thought it would be possible, but something''s shifted inside me." His hand trembled slightly as he touched the wall. "I think¡ No¡ I know, I''ve awakened something. I''m¡ an Apprentice now. I have magic." Nora looked at Lukan in amazement. Was it the place? Or was it she? "No, that can''t be¡" she whispered. "What is it?" asked Lukan. "Are you sure?" Nora asked. "How can you be so confident that you have magic now?" "It''s like the ground is whispering secrets to me," Lukan said, voice low and reverent. "I know how to reinforce the cabins, how to fortify the well so it never runs dry. But it isn''t just my experience and knowledge of the craft. I can almost see blueprints forming in my head, as if the stones and wood themselves are guiding me. This place... it''s speaking to me in ways I never imagined possible." He looked around as if seeing the place for the first time. "We aren''t staying here, right?" he asked, "My mind is already reeling with plans for the upcoming weeks. How to build a place for you. If you''d like that¡" "I know as much as you do," said Nora. "But, yes, my understanding is that we should exit the trial soon." Lukan jumped to his feet and danced a happy jig. "I''ve been training as a builder since I was a kid, but I never expected to use magic in my craft!" he exclaimed. "I aways hoped. But it''s¡ it is impossible to become an Apprentice. No one knows why and how it happens. Unless there''s a divine intervention." "Well, may be there was¡" Nora muttered. "An intervention¡" "Maybe¡ Who knows! But I don''t care!" Lukan said. "Unlike you, I can''t tell for sure what I have, but here''s what I can definitely sense. Three skills are related to management, building, and improving a settlement. I''ll have to explore more to be sure." Lukan stopped dancing and approached Nora. Her gently took her face in his large hands and smiled even wider. "Maybe it''s your influence that allowed me to become an Apprentice," he said. "And¡ It feels like I have to choose the fourth skill as well." Nora raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on her lips. "Oh, so now you''re saying I''m that divine intervention?" "Well, you did some impressive tricks that involved me during the last trial," Lukan said. "That has to count for something." Nora rolled her eyes, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips despite her attempt to look annoyed. Her cheeks flushed a warm pink as soon as the topic of the last trial came up, a memory that still made her feel a mix of embarrassment and humor. "Alright, Mr. Magic Builder, tell me about these skills of yours," she said. "And, by the way, the choice of the fourth skill¡ªthat''s something Sumi experienced just a few days earlier. It seems that you get the first three skills that are most attuned to you. And then there''s a fourth one, that you can choose to create your own path." "So, I was right, people around you are getting abilities!" exclaimed Lukan. Nora stood there, her eyes fixed on Lukan with a mix of disbelief and amusement. The only thing Nora could do in response to Lukan''s comment was to shake her head. *** The flickering flames of the hearth danced across Nora and Lukan as they sat down to a hearty dinner. The aroma of roasting meat and potatoes filled the air, making their mouths water in anticipation. Lukan looked at Nora with hopeful eyes. "I hope you''ll help guide me through these first steps," he said. "You obviously have at least experience with acquiring skills. Now I have to rely on the guidance of an outworlder! Tha tables have turned! But you also mentioned your friend, Sumi. Wasn''t she initiated recently as well?" Nora nodded, taking a bite of her meal before answering. "Yes, that''s right. But I must admit, I don''t fully understand how it all works yet." She paused, deep in thought. "For me, it''s been more of a process of receiving informative points, while for you, it seems to be more about feeling the general aspects of the skills you''ve acquired." The crackling fire provided a cozy backdrop to their conversation, enveloping them in a warm and comforting atmosphere. Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. "But wait, there was that one thing with Sumi," Nora continued. "And if you are right about me somehow influencing the initiation, it may also happen to you. But what a bizarre thought! It can''t be me!" "So, what''s the deal?" Lukan was quite curious. Nora tilted her head, contemplating. "It seems that if at least one of the skills offered to you is similar to what I already have," she said, her voice curious, "you''ll feel some sort of pull or vibration with me." She paused, waiting for his response. "Are you ready to test it?" Lukan''s expression turned contemplative as he considered Nora''s words. "Sure, it''s not like it''s something bad, right?" he said with a shrug. "It seems like you have some pretty useful skills if we got through all these trials without any major delays." He took a deep breath before continuing. "Let me try to explore my senses." There was silence between them for a moment as Lukan closed his eyes and focused inward. Then, suddenly, he leaned forward with excitement shining in his eyes. "Most of the options seem related to building as well," he exclaimed. "Which isn''t surprising, considering my experience." His gaze met Nora''s again. "But one feels different." A grin spread across his face. "And I''m pretty sure it''s something like your Enhanced Physical Strength skill." Nora listened intently, nodding as he spoke. "It seems we have found another pattern, thanks to you. Not that I''m sure what to do with that knowledge? Start walking around the land blessing strangers to give them magical powers?" She stopped abruptly, a bit frightened: "But please, seriously, don''t tell anyone about your guesses. Can you imagine what can happen if the rumor starts spreading?" Lukan''s expression softened into a warm smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Don''t worry," he reassured her. "I promise to keep your secret safe. But what about my fourth skill? Any recommendations?" Nora''s lips pressed together as she hesitated before answering. The weight of uncertainty hung heavy in the air as she spoke. "To be honest, I don''t know that much more than you do. But Sumi mentioned something about shared skills, that it may help us to advance together and help each other. Or allow us to guide each other, or something. I don'' know¡ It all is very new to me. That is, if you plan on continuing traveling with me after this ends..." A surge of realization hit Nora, causing her to gasp aloud. "Oh no," she exclaimed, her voice full of panic and disbelief. "I completely forgot about that mate clause in the quest description¡!" Lukan''s brows furrowed as he observed Nora''s turmoil. Her footsteps echoed against the wooden floorboards of their temporary home as she paced back and forth, her fingers twisting restlessly like they were trying to untangle invisible knots. Nora''s voice, a low murmur filled with agitation, kept repeating words like ''consent'' and ''slaves,'' each repetition more intense than the last. Lukan could almost see the waves of her anxiety, thick and palpable, filling the space between them. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, his wolfish fur brushing against her cheek like a warm, comforting blanket. The gentle pressure of his embrace melted away some of her tension. "What''s troubling you?" he asked softly. Nora looked up at him with tear-filled eyes. "Remember when I told you about my quest and how it promised me a mate as a reward? Well, what if that person is given to me against their will? I don''t want anyone to be forced into being with me like some sort of slave." Lukan''s hold tightened as he tried to calm her. "Nora, let''s not jump to conclusions. I don''t know how these quests of yours are meant to work, but it seems at least some things in the System align with our true desires and inner selves. I have faith that it will work out just fine." "Oh¡ well¡ Let''s hope you are right," said Nora, brushing her palm against Lukan''s fur. "I''m just¡" "What is it?" "I''m just so happy I don''t have an allergy because of your fur¡!" Lukan growled softly. "Don''t make me regret joining you!" But on his face, there was a wide smile. "Alright, let''s see if anything changed in the description of the quest," said Nora, checking her interface. "You are right, I don''t have to jump to any conclusions too early." === Quest: Overcome the Five Trials === The Guardian has set you on the Path of Five Trials. Each trial will help you to use two skills and improve them. To pass each of the trials, you will have to find a balance between these two skills. So, choose wisely. Completion: 100% You''ve proved able to balance not only your magical skills, but also your intentions. Remember that experience in the future and choose your actions wisely. Rewards: A mate can join your Harem if an agreement is reached between the parties. This ability is permanent and works towards any number of future mates. Harem functionality has been added to your System interface. Nora breathed a deep sigh of relief, her shoulders visibly relaxing as she leaned back against the couch. Lukan raised an eyebrow in question, prompting her to explain further. "All I had from the System in the past few days was really misleading," Nora said, gesturing towards the letters Lukan couldn''t see. "It''s so frustrating! Before completing that quest, it just said ''A mate, question mark, question mark, question mark.'' and I was worried we would be forced into some kind of intimate relationship. As if the System was asking me dramatically ''A mate?!? ''But now it mentions there has to be a mutual agreement between two people." Nora''s voice was laced with determination, and she made a cutting gesture with the rib of her palm as she clarified her intentions. "No slaves," she repeated. But the thought for a brief moment and added with an evil smile: "At least for now." Lukan chuckled at her comment, his eyes shining with playful sarcasm. "Looks like you''re getting used to this whole ''sex magic'' thing, aren''t you, my mistress?" *** As they sat at the wooden table that became the center of their plotting routines, Nora and Lukan picked at the last scraps of their meal and chatted about their experiences during the intense trials. Suddenly, Nora''s senses extended as if they were boosted by some unseen force. A new presence had entered the area before the defunct portal. But the arch didn''t feel like it was unusable anymore. For a brief moment, it was alive, letting through someone. The person''s energy pulsed through the air and caused Nora''s hair to stand on end. She glanced over at Lukan, who had also noticed the change in atmosphere. His undeveloped magical senses were beginning to work. Nora and Lukan exchanged cautious looks of curiosity before both stood up, ready to face whatever challenge or task lay ahead of them. The trials were finished. But there was something new waiting for them out there. As Nora emerged from the cabin, her eyes fell upon the same shadowy person she had already met. The Guardian stood tall in the center of the square, their imposing figure casting a shadow over Sumi, who cowered behind him. Her surprise at being in this unfamiliar place was evident. But as soon as she saw Nora, her ears perked up in excitement, and she leaped towards her friend. Sumi''s soft, trembling form collided into Nora''s arms with such force that it nearly knocked her breath out. Sumi''s fur was damp with tears, her body shaking as she clung to Nora like a drowning soul to driftwood. "I¡ I thought I''d lost you forever," Sumi''s voice broke. "Ten days. Ten agony-filled days¡ªI searched every inch of the forest. I didn''t know where you were. I didn''t know if you were alive. Until¡ Until the Guardian brought me here." Nora grunted as she adjusted the weight of Sumi, the desperate foxkin, leaning heavily against her. Her muscles tensed, but she silently thanked her Enhanced Physical Strength for allowing her to bear the burden of this emotional reunion. With a gentle hand, Nora brushed a lock of Sumi''s fur away from her face and pressed a tender kiss on her forehead, feeling Sumi''s warm breath against her skin. "It''s alright now," Nora soothed, trying to calm Sumi in her vulnerable state. "I''m here, you''re here, we''re together again. We''ll never be apart." Nora leaned in, her gaze fixed on Sumi''s face, which was mere centimeters from hers. The delicate blend of human features and foxlike characteristics appeared as if magnified, each detail more vivid than ever before. She traced the individual strands of Sumi''s fur with her eyes, noting how they transitioned from deep black to stark white in a mesmerizing pattern. Yet, it was Sumi''s eyes that genuinely captivated Nora. She realized she had never had the opportunity to study them this closely. The eyes shimmered as though filled with molten gold, their depths swirling with an enchanting, otherworldly allure that held her gaze as if spellbound. She never wanted to let Sumi out of her grasp again. But then as if sensing Sumi''s proximity and their moment of intimacy, a System message popped up in Nora''s vision. === System Console === === Harem Management === Invite Sumi to become a part of the Harem [Y/N]? Chapter 14. Sanctuary The System message hovered in Nora''s vision¡ªsterile glowing text against reality''s warm canvas. Before she could even process what that ''Invite Sumi to become a part of the Harem [Y/N]?'' truly meant, Sumi''s arms tightened around her with desperate intensity. The foxkin''s soft fur tickled Nora''s cheek, carrying the wild scent of pine and something uniquely Sumi, while her breath came in shallow, excited gasps that warmed Nora''s neck. "What the hell is this? Is it going to keep happening?" Nora exclaimed, almost dropping Sumi and rolling her eyes. "Yes!" Sumi''s voice trembled with raw urgency, her golden eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I don''t want to lose you again¡ I couldn''t stand not knowing where you were." Nora turned to face Sumi, her brow furrowed. "So, you understand what''s happening? How did it manifest to you? Did you get a message or what?" "Message? No¡" said Sumi, a bit unnerved. "I just felt this intense desire to be united with you. And a sensation of the System offering me to be one with you." Her expression was now dreamy as Sumi brushed her cheek against Nora''s shoulder. The ginger-headed woman gently set Sumi back on the ground and muttered under her breath, "We need to talk about this," Nora said. "It''s not a spur-of-the-moment decision." Nora shifted her gaze toward the shadowy figure that stood a few steps away and had not yet said a word. "And you too, Guardian. You also have to explain¡ things¡" *** Sumi and the Guardian settled into the wooden chairs that belonged to Nora and Lucan at the dining table. The Guardian''s form rippled and flowed like oil on water, darkness folding into itself as their towering silhouette compressed with unsettling fluidity to fit the cabin''s modest dimensions. Even in this diminished state, power radiated from them in waves that made the wooden walls creak and the flames in the hearth dance nervously. The air itself grew heavy, as if gravity had suddenly doubled its pull wherever their presence touched. And then, seemingly defying all laws of physics, they further condensed their form to fit behind the modest table. Nora and Lucan moved briskly around the cozy space, steam rising as they poured boiling water into teapots and carefully set mugs with steaming liquid on the table. As Lukan leaned forward to place the Guardian''s cup before them, a strange play of shadow cast both their profiles against the far wall. Or was is just steam from the cup playing in the sun? The moment passed as soon as Lukan straightened. The comforting aroma of chamomile and fresh mint lingered in the air, curling through the small cabin. However, even the warmth from the hearth couldn''t fully dissipate the anticipation lingering in the room. "So," Lukan stage-whispered, his ears twitching with barely contained amusement, "looks like we''ve cracked another mystery wide open. Behold¡ªyour destined mate!" He swept his arm in a mock-ceremonial gesture toward Sumi. "May the Goddess of Love shower her blessings upon this most fortuitous union!" He wasn''t able to finish as Nora''s face darkened, and she punched him. "Not. Funny." With a thoughtful expression, the Guardian finally decided to speak up. "Nora," they began, their deep voice carrying a sense of gravity and wisdom, "I am relieved to see that you have successfully passed through the trials. And I commend you for taking the time to consider and reason through your decisions. These challenges are not just mere tests but opportunities for self-discovery and growth. They reveal much about who you are as a person and the skills you possess." The Guardian paused before continuing, "As I mentioned before, I cannot divulge too many details about the Goddess'' of Love plans. But it should be obvious that no plan crafted by higher beings is ever as simple as it may appear on the surface." "What could the Goddess possibly want from me?" Nora''s voice cracked under the weight of frustration. "Unite the world with Love? Sounds like something out of a bad motivational speech. How am I supposed to do that when I don''t even know where to begin?" "The Guardian''s face shifted like clouds before a storm, shadows playing across features that seemed both ancient and ageless. "My lips are sealed, I''m afraid," they finally said, voice resonating with the weight of cosmic secrets. Nora''s shoulders slumped. "Not even a hint?" she pressed, that part of her that had always hated unsolved puzzles refusing to yield. The Guardian''s eyes flickered with something that might have been sympathy¡ªor perhaps warning. "The threads of fate are delicate things," they murmured, their voice dropping so low Nora had to lean forward to catch it. "Some, once pulled, unravel entire tapestries. Others, when snapped, set universes adrift." Their form seemed to momentarily dissolve at the edges. "I''ve already tugged more strings than wisdom permits." They paused before continuing, "All I can say is that as you embark on your journey through this world, your path will reveal itself in time. I don''t have any doubts about that. However, I am glad to see how you approached the trials. If you continue with the same balanced approach, there still may be some hope¡" "Hope for what?" asked Nora. The Guardian mimed zipping their mouth. "I''ve already said more than I should. Explore your skills. Work hard," they looked at Sumi, paused momentarily, and then shifted their gaze toward Lukan. "Cherish and cultivate your¡ connections." Nora''s gaze followed the Guardian''s, but then her eyes settled on Sumi. "So, connections¡" she muttered. "How are you, my dear? Are you feeling ready to merge with me in pure ecstasy?" Sumi paused, setting down her cup of fragrant herbal tea and meeting Nora''s gaze. "Are you serious? You would accept me as your mate?" Nora smiled softly, her eyes sparkling with affection. "I truly wish to," she said. "We have something special between us, my dear Sumi. But after all that we''ve just been through, I believe it would be wise for us to take a moment to reflect and process everything. Would that be agreeable to you? Would you be happy with a short pause before taking the next step? I''m sure we''ll find a lot things to do together in the meanwhile." "Well, yes¡" Sumi looked away, visibly slouching. She pushed her mug of tea away. "Not that I can make you." The Guardian let out a deep, hearty chuckle. "Good! A measured approach is the key," they boomed. "Let''s leave this forgotten place behind and be on our way. Chop-chop!" Reality folded without warning. One moment they were seated at the wooden table¡ªthe next, the cabin dissolved in a silent explosion of soft light that washed over Nora''s skin like warm water. Her stomach lurched, and suddenly they stood beneath a cathedral of ancient trees, their massive trunks stretching skyward like nature''s pillars. Honeyed sunlight spilled through gaps in the emerald canopy, painting their skin with dappled gold and throwing intricate shadows across the springy moss that cushioned their feet. A breeze whispered past, carrying the sharp tang of pine sap, wildflowers, and the earthy perfume of soil teeming with life. It was peaceful. Just a bit too peaceful after the chaos of the trials. And nothing reminded of the presence of the Guardian or the trials that Nora and Lukan had to brave through besides the changes deep within these three people. "But wait!" gasped Nora, her eyes widening in realization. "I forgot Sumi''s blanket!" "Don''t worry, I got you!" said Lukan, taking out the blanket from his backpack. *** As the orange sun dipped lower in the sky, its warm glow bathed the forest in a golden hue, casting long, dancing shadows through the tall trees. The trio exchanged knowing glances and silently agreed to set up camp for the night, postponing making any decisions until the morning light. The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there. Lukan walked around the clearing, measuring distances, touching trees, and placing markers in different places. He was practically bouncing with excitement, eager to demonstrate his newly acquired magical talents. The thrill of uncertainty buzzed through him as he was yet to start exploring the extent of his power. He had to figure out everything by the feel. And one of the first things he decided to try was to do what he was taught. But involving magic. Standing in the center of the clearing, Lukan rubbed his palms together, a grin spreading across his face. "All right, folks," he declared, glancing around at his companions, "what do we need to make sure we spend tonight in comfort?" Not even waiting for a response, he took out his axe and prepared all the materials. Lukan moved with astonishing swiftness, not stopping for a second until he gathered everything that was needed. "Is that how you feel when your strength skill kicks in?" he asked Nora. "I feel like I can lift up a whole house with my bare hands." Nora and Sumi only looked at each other and giggled, but their amusement quickly transformed to wonder as Lukan set to work in earnest. They found themselves stepping back, giving him space as his movements flowed with supernatural grace. Lukan''s axe became a silver blur, each stroke finding its mark with uncanny precision. Chips of wood exploded outward in golden arcs that caught the sunlight. Where his fingers brushed against wood, branches seemed to bend willingly, twisting and intertwining of their own accord. He''d pause occasionally, head tilted as if listening to instructions only he could hear before his hands would dart out in quick, decisive movements. The trees themselves appeared to offer their limbs, bending at impossible angles before snapping into place with soft sighs of contentment. Under his touch, dead wood awakened, gaps sealed themselves, and the emerging shelter pulsed with an energy that made the air around it shimmer like heat rising from summer stone. The weather was pleasantly warm, with no clouds to hide the bright moon. They didn''t need much to spend this night in the wild¡ªjust a shelter to protect them from the soft breeze and the morning sun''s light. "Not bad for an apprentice," Nora said, checking out the structure. "You know we don''t plan to stay here for longer than one night?" Lukan grinned, his ears twitching. "I''ll take that as a compliment, coming from someone who just learned that magic existed! And, yes, I know that, of course. I just¡ I had this burning urge to try¡ To experiment!" "And what do you think of your new abilities?" "I¡ I love it!" Lukan exclaimed. "I want more! I need¡ a project!" Nora laughed, the sound light and musical in the evening air. "Fair point. Thanks doing this for us, Lukan," she said. "As for the project¡ Maybe we''ll find something for you. What do you think, Sumi?" Sumi curled her fluffy tail around Nora''s leg as they sat close together. "Oh, I''m sure we will," she said with a sly grin, "You know, Nora, you looked pretty cute back there, all stern and serious with the Guardian." Nora''s cheeks flushed with a tinge of pink, and she nudged Sumi. "Oh, stop it. You''re the one who looks cute all the time." Sumi''s eyes sparkled mischievously. "Well, if you''re going to flatter me, at least make it more convincing." "You two are something else," said Lukan. "Get a room! Oh, wait... you can''t!" *** As the first rays of sunlight peeked through the trees, Nora, Sumi, and Lukan sat around the crackling fire in their makeshift forest camp. The smell of pine and smoke filled the air as they discussed their next move. "So, you need to make a decision," Nora said, looking intently at Lukan and Sumi. "Are you going to stay with me or are we splitting now." "Don''t look at me!" exclaimed Sumi. "I''m not going anywhere without you!" "I''d join you, if you''d have me," said Lukan, making long pauses between the words. "I owe you. Without you I''d never become an Apprentice, I''d never get my magical skills. If that''s fine with you, I''d join you and see where this adventure leads us. Gods or no gods, that doesn''t matter to me." "Good, I''m glad to hear that," Nora leaned forward, her brow furrowed in concentration. "As you know, I''m new to this world. I don''t know how the things work. And now, as it seems, I have two perfect guides for my quest!" Sumi purred in delight, softly touching Nora''s arm. Lukan sat a bit further away, patiently waiting for more information. "We need to find a location to establish our base," Nora said, gesturing with her hand. "Somewhere secure but also easily accessible for potential allies. If there are any allies to gain. Are there?" "This is a peaceful land," Sumi said. "If you help people, you''ll gain friends and connections. And, as a matter of fact, I know just the perfect place for us to settle. It''s a hidden glade, not too far from my ancestral region, surrounded by towering trees and natural barriers." "How far is it?" asked Nora. "It''s close enough to a few smaller settlements where we can find allies and trade partners, but remote enough to stay hidden from those who might oppose us." A sense of excitement filled Sumi''s voice as she described the peaceful sanctuary that could serve as their refuge. "And we can get there pretty soon if we pack fast." "That sounds perfect," Lukan agreed. "But we need more than just a location. What about supplies, shelter, all that stuff? Also, do we need to think about how to attract and welcome people who might want to join us?" "Let''s take it one step at a time," Nora said, her mind already racing with ideas. "First and foremost, we must scout the glade thoroughly, taking note of its potential for our cause. Then, it would be wise to create a comprehensive list of resources we will need to gather. However, we must also be discreet in spreading word about our plans." She paused, giving everything a thought. "Luckily, the three of us seem to possess at least some of the skills necessary for this undertaking," "I''ll handle the planning and strategy, while Sumi''s knowledge of the area and her attunement to nature will prove invaluable. And Lukan, with his skilled hands, or should I say that they are doubly skilled now, will construct a sturdy home for us to call our own. What say you to this plan?" Sumi stood, her tail swishing with excitement. "I love it! A home! What a dream! I''ll lead the way. It''s not far, and we can get there before the evening if we start right now. Let''s go!" But then she halted mid-step, her earlier confidence evaporating like morning dew. Sumi''s tail, usually a barometer of her boundless energy, hung unnaturally still as she took a hesitant step toward Nora. The foxkin''s golden eyes, normally dancing with mischief, now shimmered with vulnerability that made Nora''s heart clench. "And when we arrive..." Sumi began, her voice dropping to a whisper so fragile it might shatter if touched. Her fingers twisted nervously in the fabric of her clothing, claws catching on threads. "Will you..." She swallowed visibly, ears flattening against her head. "Will I become yours, Nora? Will you claim me as your mate?" The final words rushed out in a breathless tumble: "Allow me to join your harem?" *** With their new goal set, the trio set off into the forest, following Sumi''s lead with careful steps. The journey was quiet, their footsteps muffled by the thick carpet of fallen leaves and moss, each of them absorbed in thoughts about the mission ahead. Nora surveyed her surroundings with wide, curious eyes. The towering trees and the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy reminded her of the Natural Reserve she loved to explore back home. Yet, everything here seemed softer, as if the very air was imbued with a gentle, warm magic. Thoughts of home ambushed Nora without warning¡ªnot the abstract concept but a visceral assault of memory. Her father''s baritone laugh over Sunday morning coffee. Her mother''s reading glasses perpetually perched atop her head, never where they belonged. The faded coffee stain on their kitchen counter that nobody had ever properly cleaned. These fragments clawed at Nora''s consciousness with the precision of surgeon''s tools, carving hollows where certainty had been. Were they searching still? Had they found her abandoned hiking gear, her last footprints disappearing into unremarkable forest? Did they wake each morning with that first, blessed millisecond of forgetting before remembrance crushed them anew? The weight of their imagined grief pressed against her sternum until each breath became deliberate labor. As these thoughts swirled in her mind, she stumbled over a twisted tree root protruding from the ground. Despite the enchanting warmth of this world, she couldn''t shake the awareness that her absence had likely caused her family great pain. Would she ever find a way back to them to see their faces again? The answer to that question likely lay in expanding her magical abilities and training. Perhaps the Goddess of Love, who had marked Nora as her Chosen One, would offer guidance and assistance once her mission was accomplished. Even if it was she, the Goddess, who stole Nora from her ordinary life. They crested a gentle rise just as the midday sun reached its zenith, and suddenly the forest parted like a theater curtain drawn back to reveal its masterpiece. Sumi froze mid-step, her outstretched arm halting them as surely as a physical barrier. "There," she breathed, reverence transforming her voice. Before them stretched a perfect circle of land cradled in the embrace of ancient trees whose massive trunks stood shoulder-to-shoulder like silent guardians. Their uppermost branches reached toward each other across the open space, creating a natural dome that allowed sunlight to pour through in golden shafts. A crystalline stream bisected the glade, its waters catching the light and fracturing it into diamond sparkles as it tumbled over smooth, moss-covered stones. Wildflowers in shades of violet, yellow and white carpeted the edges of the clearing, their sweet perfume mingling with the rich loam of forest soil and the sharp tang of pine. The very air seemed different here¡ªclearer somehow, as if time itself moved more gently within this hidden pocket of wilderness. "This is it," Sumi said, her voice hopeful. She was almost jumping on the spot, barely containing her energy and feelings. "Is that¡? Is that good enough to be our starting point?" Chapter 15. First Night Together Nora surveyed the area, her mind buzzing with possibilities. "We have water. We can build shelters over there, gather supplies, and create a space where people feel safe and loved. This could be our home base." She stepped closer to Sumi and hugged her. It was a moment of connection, a silent promise of support and camaraderie. "That looks like a great place!" Nora said. "What made you choose this spot?" "Oh, you know, just a little foxkin intuition," Sumi said, flicking her tail playfully as she twirled in place. "And maybe the tiny detail that I know these woods like the back of my paw. No one''s claimed it, and the nearest villages are far enough that no one will come bothering us¡ªunless they''re curious about the lovely new settlers moving in!" "So, what are we waiting for?" asked Lukan. He was slowly moving around the clearing, his eyes already taking the measure of the area. "We''ll need sturdy timber for constructing shelter, a stockpile of food provisions, and an array of tools to sustain us." "It seems we have plenty tasks for each of us here," said Nora. "And we half half a day left." "Sumi, I''m sure you are skilled in hunting and gathering, as I am as well, so we won''t go hungry," said Lukan. "But we''ll probably need to teach Nora a few things." He stepped closer to Nora, winked an eye, and loudly whispered. "As she isn''t local!" "I''ll reach out to some of the nearby settlements quietly, I have friends there," said Sumi. "We need to find out if there are any prospects for trade. We have to start building connections and trust anyway." Nora inhaled deeply, the scent of fresh pine and damp soil grounding her, yet her chest tightened with the weight of it all. A lump formed in her throat, warmth prickling at the corners of her eyes. She quickly wiped at them, laughing softly, as if embarrassed by her own emotions. Sumi, noticing that, stepped closer. "What is it?" she asked. "Did we say something? Did we do something wrong?" "On the contrary!" exclaimed Nora. "You do too much for a person you didn''t know just a few weeks ago! I don''t know how to express my gratitude! And my heart¡ it''s swelling with emotions right now!" Sumi tilted her head with a sly smile, her golden eyes shimmering. "Duh, Nora. Haven''t you figured it out yet? You''re stuck with me now! Forever and ever! No returns allowed." She flicked her tail dramatically over Nora''s arm as if sealing a deal. "Nora, don''t even think about gratitude or whatever," said Lukan. "You''ve changed my life already. You don''t even know how much my status of Apprentice means." As Nora continued to look around at the vivid surroundings, a feeling of dizziness washed over her. It was hard to believe that she was stuck in her mundane job on Earth just days ago. Now, here she was, building a new home in the forest with beings that resembled a human fox and a mix of wolf and a man¡ªsomething she could never have imagined before. She couldn''t help but wonder if this was all just a dream, the last glitch of her dying brain, or if it was indeed her new reality. *** The trio started their planning by wandering across the glade they chose for their camp, taking note of potential building sites and jotting down a list of necessary materials. Sumi bounced around Nora, full of energy and laughter, her tail swishing from side to side and her hands often gently touching Nora''s. But when it came to business, she took charge and directed her fellow settlers with precision to get things done efficiently. Their first camp had to be functional, even if, inevitably, it would be pretty modest. Nora and Sumi gathered wood and set up a temporary shelter. After the previous evening, they knew what Lukan would need and were sure he''d be able to build a similar structure that should protect them, at least for a few nights, before they figured out something more permanent. Meanwhile, Lukan ventured into the forest to hunt and forage. Still, he returned with plenty of time before the sunset and fixed two simple shelters for sleeping. Between them, they constructed a primitive shed for storage, using branches and leaves to keep their supplies safe from the elements. Before the sun dropped below the horizon and the evening breeze came, they constructed a modest hearth in the very heart of the camp. Sumi and Nora encircled it with a ring of smooth stones they''d gathered from the stream. As soon as it was done, they''d lighted a fire. Flames flickered and danced, casting a warm glow on their faces as they sat around it, enjoying a brief moment of reprieve¡ªthe crackling of burning wood mixed with the aroma of sizzling meat and bubbling stew. As the stars began to blanket the sky, they huddled closer to the fire''s comforting warmth, their laughter and chatter punctuated by the occasional snap of a log. The night air wasn''t too cold, but the contrast with the daytime was still quite notable. Still, the hearth''s heat wrapped around them like a cozy blanket. Surveying the tidy camp, Lukan dusted his hands off. With provisions neatly arranged and his tools placed carefully in the temporary shed, the trio exchanged looks of astonishment. In just half a day, they had transformed an empty glade in the middle of the forest into something that looked like the beginning of an actual settlement. Before acquiring their magical skills, each task would have taken hours longer, leaving them exhausted and frustrated. But now, empowered with their newfound abilities, they felt like they could continue for hours and hours more. Nora let out a slow breath, stretching her arms above her head as she scanned the clearing. What had been an empty patch of grass just hours ago was now their home¡ªa fire crackling, shelters standing, food waiting. It felt surreal. "Not bad for a day''s work," she said, letting her fingers trail over the smooth stones circling the fire. Sumi plopped down beside her, stretching dramatically across the blanket. "Ugh, if I never lift another log again, it''ll be too soon. I should''ve just used my foxkin charm to make you two do all the work!" Sumi rolled onto her side, propping her head up with one hand. "I don''t know¡ maybe a little more of this?" She flicked her tail, brushing it against Nora''s leg. "Or this?" She let her fingers trail teasingly close to Nora''s hand before pulling away. Nora laughed, swatting her lightly. "You''re impossible." "Hm¡ But I''d correct you, if I may," said Lukan with a toothy smile. "Not a day''s work, but a half-a-day''s work. Which is even more impressive." He looked at his giant palms. "I knew I wasn''t a bad builder," he said. "But this¡ I can''t wait until I start building some proper houses here. It should be¡ quite amazing!" He reclined, leaning away from the fire, and wistfully looked into the dark sky, covered with countless stars. "I stand corrected," said Nora, returning Lukan''s smile. "I did a lot of hiking, and some survival stuff in my previous life. But these new abilities¡ They truly change how you perceive what''s possible and what''s not. And then¡ with you two¡ It feels like nothing is impossible!" "Oh¡" Sumi leaned closer to Nora and pecked her cheek. "We love you too, Nora!" Sumi adjusted her seating on the rough, woven blanket, her fingers brushing against the cool ground beneath. She gazed intently at the flickering flames that danced and crackled in the dim light, casting playful shadows across her face. "But in all seriousness," she continued. "It''s as if everything I once understood has been infused with a deeper, more potent significance. Some things have become so clear and instinctual. When I went to forage for food in the forest¡ It never felt as effortless as it did today. Each step felt guided, as if the forest itself whispered its secrets to me, making the harvest almost second nature." "So, you weren''t serious when you told you love me?" asked Nora. "What? When? What''s happening?" asked Sumi, a shade of fear on her face. "Ah¡! You''re teasing me! Such a tease!" Then, a serious expression returned to her face. "But no, I was serious when I said that. I never joke about love." Lukan, not joining Sumi''s and Nora''s games, flexed his fingers, then frowned as he rubbed his palm against his forearm. "Weird," he muttered, studying his hand. "I swear my hands didn''t get this calloused before I became an Apprentice. Feels like I built half a village today." Sumi perked up, ears twitching. "That''s because you did," she teased, tail flicking as she stretched her arms. "Congratulations, wolf boy. But probably that''s another thing we need to focus on with our healing powers. What do you think about it, Nora?" "We sure do," said Nora. "We don''t want our master builder to have any discomfort! We need him to build lots of things in the upcoming days!" Lukan huffed. "I appreciate any help! But honestly, I feel... stronger. Faster, even. It''s subtle, but it''s there." He flexed his fingers again, watching them as if expecting something more. "Is that how it feels for you, Nora? When you progress with your skills?" Nora tilted her head, considering. "Kind of," she admitted. "I don''t always notice it right away, but when I check, the progress is there." She hesitated, then swiped her hand through the air, bringing up the familiar glowing letters of the System messages. "Let''s see how today''s work measured up." Sumi scooted closer, leaning on Nora''s shoulder. "Ooooh, tell us, tell us! Did you get a additional points for lifting all that wood?" She wiggled her fingers playfully. Nora laughed. "Let me see¡" She scanned the stats. "Oh, some stuff did improve quite well! Let me read the full list." ========== Updated Skills ========== Empathic Sensing: 5.31% (+0.31%) Enhanced Physical Strength: 7.34% (+2.34%) Healing: 4.73% (+0.73%) Sensory Enhancement: 5.27% (+0.27%) ========== Skills ========== Aura Defences: 5.0% Dream Manipulation: 5.0% Emotional Influence: 6.0% Empathic Sensing: 5.3% Energy Sharing: 5.0% Enhanced Physical Strength: 7.3% Healing: 4.7% Sensory Enhancement: 5.2% Sexual Magic: 5.0% Telepathic Communication: 5.0% "Hey! When did you use Empathic Sensing and Sensory Enhancement?" asked Lukan. "I remember the effect they had during the trials and I don''t think I felt anything like that today!" "If you ask for my guess, and I don''t have anything besides guesses yet, they are just working in the background," Nora said. "I agree, I don''t think I did much to explore these skills today, but still, they improved." Nora rechecked the numbers and continued her thought. "Enhanced Physical Strength and Healing, I have in common with you, Lukan, and you, Sumi, respectively." "And we all had some minor cuts and other things that needed healing today!" exclaimed Sumi. "Did we just¡ fix them on the go? I didn''t even sense anything!" "Well, there''s only one way to be sure," said Nora. "If you remember where you had any cuts or bruises, let''s check if you still have them. My guess that they may have disappeared!" "You are right!" exclaimed Lukan. "I slightly hit my finger with one of the stones you''ve got for the fire pit." He looked at the finger with incredulity. "I forgot about it because we were so busy. But there are no signs I ever hit it there! No bruising, no nothing!" "Good," said Nora with a smile. "Maybe we should notice more of these things we do. That would help us learn and become better and better. At least that''s how I''d do these things. And as the load of work was pretty similar for all of us, I''d make an educated guess that the changes in these skills should also be within a similar range for you as well. Even if we don''t have a way to check that." "You are right! It isn''t much different from learning without magic," Sumi said. "But probably the changes aren''t that significant yet. So, I can''t confirm anything just by sensing how my skill abilities feel." As the last remnants of their meal vanished and the fire dwindled to glowing embers, each team member felt the weight of the day''s exertions settling heavily upon them. Nora, now sitting cross-legged close to the dying fire, flicked a glance at Sumi. Her eyes twinkled with a hint of mischief, and a playful smile danced across her lips. "You know," she mused, stretching her arms above her head, "I think it''s finally time to see if these so-called foxkin relaxation techniques are as good as you claim." Sumi''s ears perked up, her tail giving an excited flick. "Oh-ho, so you do listen when I talk about the important things in life!" She leaned in close, her voice dropping to a playful whisper. "But be warned, my dear Nora, once you experience my magic touch, you''ll never want to sleep alone again." Nora''s lips parted into a playful, husky laugh as she leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Well, that sounds intriguing," she said, her voice soft yet charged with interest. A warm flush spread across her cheeks, deepening their color, a reaction not at all prompted by the cool evening breeze. Lukan groaned, rubbing his temples. "Look, just¡ keep it down, alright? Some of us actually want sleep, not to be serenaded by you two whispering sweet nothings all night." Sumi gasped dramatically, clutching her chest. "Sweet nothings? Lukan, you wound me! I would never whisper! My declarations of love are meant to be shouted from the treetops!" She paused, grinning mischievously. "Or, you know, moaned into a pillow. Depends on the night. By the way¡ do we even have pillows?!?" As the fire dwindled into glowing embers and the stars emerged in the night sky, the trio settled into the two shelters erected by Lukan. The quiet rustle of leaves and distant calls of woodland creatures filled the air, blending with the gentle crackling of the dying flames. And after a series of passionate moans and whispers from Nora and Aira, the glade succumbed to a peaceful slumber. The forest seemed to embrace them, wrapping all three in its tranquil embrace as they drifted into dreams filled with magic and wonder. Exciting News for My Lovely Readers! 🦊
