《The Games of Raz》
Prologue
Nexus jolted awake, his crystalline form trembling as an overwhelming sense of dread clawed at his chest. For a moment, his mind remained trapped in the lingering echoes of his nightmare, his heart hammering so violently that it threatened to fracture his very core.
Taking deep calming breath ¡°Breath, Nexus calm down.¡±
He forced himself to remember that. But the memory was so vivid, so raw, that the screams still rang in his mind. The cries of his people, the clash of shattered defenses, the sickening finality of it all.
He had been there, standing on the front lines as the tide of destruction bore down upon them. He had fought. They all had fought. But the Razian Emperor had torn through their ranks with the ease of a child toppling a fragile tower of cards.

The battle was never fair. Never meant to be.
The only force that had ever truly defied the Emperor¡ªtheir last, desperate hope¡ªhad been those born of the Unchained. The ones who had stood unshackled, wielding a power that defied control. The last protectors of their people.
And yet, even they had fallen.
Nexus had slept just long enough to relive the moment again¡ªthe Emperor of Raz, his merciless spear piercing the heart of the last of the Unchained.
The light in their eyes had faded, and with it, so had the last remnants of their people¡¯s freedom.
Nexus clenched his fists, his crystalline fingers grinding together with a sharp, grating sound. His body ached from the phantom weight of a war long lost, but he had no time for grief. The past was etched into his being, but the future?
That¡ could still be changed..
Chapter One
Jason sighed as he walked down the street toward his one-bedroom apartment, rolling his shoulders after what had officially become the worst month of his life. First, his girlfriend dumped him. Then, two weeks later, he got fired. Sure, he¡¯d been slacking, but could anyone blame him? The city buzzed with life around him, but all he wanted was a hot shower, his couch, and the latest episode of his favorite show.
Then, a sudden flash of bright light in the sky caught his attention.
Another police chase? He squinted, watching as the glow pulsed erratically. ¡°Looks like the cops are after Reaver again,¡± he muttered, quickening his pace into a light jog as he crossed the street.
As he reached his apartment, the same light from earlier now shone through his window, growing impossibly bright. A warning prickled at the edge of his mind.
¡°What the hell?¡± Jason whispered¡ªbefore the world erupted into a brilliant white flash.
¡°Welcome, Contest Number Fifty, to the Fiftieth Annual Games of Raz.¡±
Jason''s vision blurred, his eyes burning as he blinked furiously against the searing light. ¡°Feels like I just had a staring contest with the sun... and got my ass kicked,¡± he muttered.
As his sight returned, he realized he was no longer in his apartment. He was floating. Suspended in an endless void of blinding white¡ªno walls, no floor, just nothingness.
A glowing blue orb hovered before him, pulsing gently like a slow heartbeat.
The moment Jason¡¯s eyes locked onto it, the orb spoke again.
¡°Contest Number Fifty, formerly known as Jason. I am one of the Oracles of Raz. You may call me Nexus. Contestant, what name will you be known by in the Razian Empire?¡±
Jason¡¯s stomach churned. ¡°Jason is fine,¡± he said cautiously. ¡°But¡ what the hell is going on?¡±
¡°Well, Jason,¡± Nexus spoke in a disturbingly calm tone, ¡°you have been selected to compete in the Games of Raz for the sole purpose of entertaining His Majesty, the Emperor of the Razian Empire.¡±
Anger surged in Jason at the floating... whatever-the-hell this thing was. ¡°Hold up. I¡¯m not doing some stupid game for some guy I¡¯ve never even heard of! And what empire? Last I checked, the USA doesn''t have an Emperor.¡±
A deep resonance vibrated through the void.
Before Jason could react, a bone-piercing ring shattered the air, slamming into his chest like a sledgehammer. Pain detonated through his body. He gasped, clutching at his chest as an invisible force ripped through his very soul. A violent cough wracked his body, blood splattering onto the empty space below him.
Gritting his teeth, he glared at the floating orb. ¡°If you think a little sound is gonna¡ª¡±
The ringing struck again.
Agony tore through him, white-hot and relentless. His thoughts shattered, and the last thing he felt before darkness swallowed him whole was the sickening sensation of falling.
Jason stirred, his body aching as he struggled to consciousness.
A voice, calm yet commanding, cut through his daze.
¡°Hello, Jason. Let¡¯s try this again.¡±
His eyes snapped open.
He was no longer in the void. Instead, he stood in a forest unlike anything he had ever seen. Towering crystal-like trees loomed overhead, their translucent leaves catching the sunlight and refracting it into dazzling prisms. A cool, electric energy crackled in the air, making his skin tingle.
And in front of him sat a being made of the same blue crystal as the trees.
Humanoid in shape, it glowed softly from within, its smooth, faceless form watching him with eerie stillness.
¡°Jason, I have concluded that we need to start over. Before we begin, it is not permitted to speak ill of the Emperor or his Empire.¡±
Jason scoffed. ¡°If you think I give a damn about that piece of shi¡ª¡±
His voice vanished.
His throat tightened, his breath hitching. He tried again, but nothing came out.
¡°I have prevented you from committing a heinous crime,¡± Nexus continued, unbothered. ¡°By removing your ability to make sound, I¡¯ve spared you the consequences of further disrespect. You¡¯re welcome.¡±
Jason gritted his teeth, rage curling in his gut.
A low thump echoed in his chest.
Nexus tilted its head. ¡°Curious.¡±
Another thump.
Jason clenched his fists. The air trembled around him. A crack formed along Nexus¡¯s crystalline form.
A thin stream of crystalline blood trickled from its eyes.
Nexus let out a sharp breath, its glow flickering. ¡°You cannot subdue me,¡± Jason growled, his voice returning as something deep inside him shattered Nexus¡¯s hold. He stepped forward, a smirk playing on his lips. ¡°However¡ I am intrigued. I won¡¯t provoke you further regarding your Emperor.¡± His eyes darkened. ¡°For now.¡±
Nexus steadied itself, though its glow had dimmed. For the first time, Jason saw something in its expression¡ªhesitation.
¡°¡Very well,¡± Nexus said, its voice tight. ¡°Let us proceed.¡±
With a wave of its hand, five translucent screens materialized before Jason.

¡°As a Forerunner, you will be granted five class selections based on your soul calling.¡±
Class Selections:
- Fighter (Common): A balanced warrior trained in physical combat and weapon mastery.
- Mage (Uncommon): Channels arcane forces for devastating magical attacks, fragile but powerful.
- Shadow Dancer (Rare): A master of stealth and assassination, able to phase through darkness.
- Lord of the Undead (Epic): Raises the dead, sacrifices life force for immense power. Converts user into undead.
- Mystic Swordsman (Forerunner): Summons swords infused with unique abilities, adaptable to any combat situation.
Jason¡¯s breath slowed as he read through the descriptions. Undead could be cool¡ but I don¡¯t like the whole ¡®turn into a zombie¡¯ thing.
That left Shadow Dancer or Mystic Swordsman.
His gut told him Mystic Swordsman. It was versatile, unpredictable¡ªand something about it just felt right.
He reached out and made his selection.
Instantly, a surge of power flooded through him.
A new notification appeared in his vision:
Innate Skills Acquired:
- Dimensional Space: Store non-living items in a pocket dimension.
- Sword Mastery Level 1: Enhanced sword proficiency.
- Identify Level 1: Grants insight into objects and beings.
another notification flashed
Sword Selections Remaining: Two
Options Available:
Blade of Undying Flame ¨C Forged in the Ember Peak Forge, this blade grants the user fire-based attacks capable of lighting even stone ablaze. The user gains a spike in strength and stamina.
Thunder Shock ¨C Once an ordinary sword, Master Swordsman Tempest Edge Azra meditated over it in the Valley of Endless Storms until the storms bent to the blade¡¯s will. This sword grants the Mystic Swordsman the ability to coat themselves in lightning, providing powerful magical defense. The user receives a large boost to agility.
The Devourer ¨C Created from the bones of a galactic-devouring worm, this blade retains the properties of endless hunger. Feed the blade, and it will rival the gods themselves.
Jason studied the options carefully. His first choice was clear. He had always been a long-term strategist in his gaming career bunker down, max out his tech, and then obliterate any opposition. He selected The Devourer.
A small black hole, speckled with glowing white lights, appeared before him. A strange urge compelled him to reach into the void. As his hand entered, an overwhelming feeling of hunger consumed him. When he withdrew, a bone blade the length of his forearm formed in his grasp. Its hilt was wrapped in a worn leather strip. Examining it, Jason ran his thumb along the edge, it was so sharp it immediately drew blood, which the blade absorbed hungrily. A pang of hunger hit him again, a gnawing emptiness that demanded to be fed.
A notification flashed:
Touch of the Devourer, Allows the bonded user to break down defeated prey into base components for absorption.
Warning: the use of this blade can influence the user causing the user to loose themselves to an all consuming desire to consume all.
Well that''s just great love a weapon that will make me go crazy. Jason though with a roll of his eyes.
All other skills locked.
Jason frowned thoughtfully but looked back at the menus for his second choice. Both options were appealing: Undying Flame for offense, or Thunder Shock for defense. But in the end, Jason knew his preference. Better to deliver the blows than receive them, he thought, selecting Undying Flame.
As before, a tugging sensation pulled at him. A warning appeared:
Warning: Can only have one sword equipped at a time.
With a thought, the void holding The Devourer opened again, swallowing the bone blade into the darkness. Jason shifted his focus to the new sword, and suddenly, a rent in reality made of roaring fire sprang into existence beside him. He reached into the flame, feeling a warmth that fueled his very soul. But beneath that warmth, he sensed a terrible, violent power capable of unimaginable destruction.
Jason drew Undying Flame from the fire. It was a katana, its polished steel glowing with an inner fire, as if molten embers pulsed just beneath the surface. With every movement, the blade cast flickering light. Its razor-sharp edge gleamed with a golden hue, radiating elemental power and untamed fury.
Skills:
Flame Crescent ¨C Coat the edge of the blade in fire, sending an arcing slash up to ten feet.
All other skills locked.
Jason marveled at the blade¡¯s beauty and power, feeling its potential coursing through him.
"Congratulations," Nexus said with a calm, almost eerie smile. "Now that you have become imbued, we can move on to more pressing matters. There are several stages to the Games of Raz. First, you and the five other Earthlings will be given a proving ground to help you catch up with your newfound powers. You will be given ninety days. The other competitors have had their powers for generations¡ªyou all have some serious work cut out for you."
Jason¡¯s mind raced. ¡°Who are the others? Why was I chosen? What do you mean, ¡®catch up¡¯? Are we expected to battle these other beings? What are all the challenges I have before me?¡±
Nexus remained unflinching. "All will be answered in time. Your first task is to clear as much of the proving ground as possible. You may work with the others, or you may kill each other. the decisions are yours. Make the Emperor proud!"
With a slow, deliberate motion, Nexus outstretched his arms.
a golden prompt appeared in front of Jason.
Quest:
Defeat the three bosses of the Triumverge Citadel:
- Pyraxis, the Flame Sovereign
- Frostmaw, the Eternal Warden
- Umbraxis, the Shrouded Betrayer
Jason barely had time to process the words before the world collapsed.
The world around him began to fall apart breaking piece by piece simultaneously being replaced by a vast, twilight realm where the light seemed to bend and twist, creating endless illusions. He was surrounded with a faint mist, and uneven ground, that was covered with creeping black vines that pulse with a dim, ghostly glow. Tall, jagged spires of obsidian rise from the ground, their reflective surfaces creating distorted reflections of everything around them. Shadowy figures flicker in and out of view, making it hard to distinguish what is real from what is merely a figment of the mind.
An oppressive aura pressed down on Jason''s mind, the air around him thickening with malevolence. Whispers echoed from the shadows, hissing accusations that cut deep into his soul.
"It was all your fault... you Could have saved her. Should have saved her. But you were weak, afraid... cowardly. You abandoned her to save yourself."
"No... that''s not true," Jason muttered, his voice trembling.
"Oh, but it is," the ghostly voice hissed, growing louder, more sinister. "You know this in your heart. Why do you deserve to live... when she deserved to die?"
Jason fell to his knees as images swirled in the shadows around him. A young girl, no older than twelve, running ahead, glancing back at him with a wide, innocent smile. His heart clenched.
"No!" Jason screamed. "Turn back! I can''t... I can''t see this again!" Tears welled in his eyes as he choked on the memories. "I... I didn''t mean to¡ª"
Thump. Thump.
The vision shattered, the shadows dissolving like smoke. Jason¡¯s heart pounded in his chest, the oppressive feeling replaced with something even more chilling. Standing just five feet in front of him was a figure so terrifying, the very air seemed to twist and darken around it.
The figure loomed over him, its body shrouded in tattered, shadowy cloth that fluttered in an unseen wind. Beneath its hood, two faintly glowing eyes burned through the gloom, cold and pitiless. Long, skeletal hands extended from the folds of its robe, eager to ensnare him.
Thump. Thump.
With a guttural hiss, the creature recoiled slightly, as if it sensed something within Jason. Instinctively, Jason used Identify.
Harrower
An undead that breaks the will of its victims by forcing them to relive their worst memories repeatedly until their will shatters. Once their will is broken, the Harrower harvests their soul.
Jason''s breathing was ragged, but the fear gave way to something deeper anger. He wouldn''t let this thing break him.
Fueled by a surge of rage, Jason acted on pure instinct. A rent of fire burned through the oppressive darkness, and in a single, fluid motion, he unleashed his first skill: Flame Crescent.
A brilliant arc of fire sprang to life, slicing through the shadows and forcing the darkness to retreat. The Harrower, caught in the center of the blazing crescent, let out a pitiful shriek its final sound before it was completely engulfed by the searing flames. The creature writhed for only a moment before its form fell to the ground smoldering, the air left smelling of burning decay.
Jason stood there, breathing heavily, his eyes still locked on the space where the Harrower lay. The rage that had fueled him simmered down, but the intensity of the moment lingered.
From afar, Nexus silently observed the encounter. His crystalline eyes glimmered with curiosity.
¡°Terrifying,¡± Nexus whispered to himself, almost reverently. ¡°Truly terrifying. If he survives, he may be just what we¡¯ve waited for, Master.¡±
Chapter Two
Chapter Two
Jason stood over the fallen Harrower, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The battle had drained him, but the familiar tug from the void pulled at his senses, relentless and hungry. With a single thought, he willed The Devourer into his hand. The weapon pulsed in response, its hunger surging through him like a living thing.
He barely needed to think before whispering, "Consume."
At once, the Harrower¡¯s body lifted from the ground, caught in an unseen current. Darkness coiled around it, a swirling vortex speckled with faint lights, like stars in an infinite void. The creature¡¯s essence drained away, and Jason felt The Devourer shift¡ªits presence growing stronger, heavier.
Harrower Consumed.
Three options materialized before his eyes:
- New Skill: Depths of Despair ¨C Force a target to relive their worst memory. Can break the target¡¯s will. Warning: Only one new skill can be added at the current grade.
- Hood of the Harrower ¨C A cursed hood granting minor mental protection from negative emotions (Passive) and Piercing Gaze (Passive), allowing the wearer to see through minor illusions.
- Break down the Harrower for one Razian Coin.
Jason smirked. This weapon can absorb the powers of the monsters I slay? His mind raced with possibilities. Depths of Despair was tempting¡ªbut too cruel. He had spent too long walking through his own haunted halls to subject someone else to that same torment.
Unsure of the coin¡¯s worth, he selected Hood of the Harrower.
¡°Hood of the Harrower added to dimensional storage.¡±
He could feel it¡ªa presence lingering in the back of his mind, like an item tucked into a bag. A notification flashed:
Hood of the Harrower (Uncommon)
- Pierce the Veil ¨C See through minor illusions.
- Minor Mental Protection ¨C Reduces effects of minor mental attacks.
Would you like to equip? Yes or No
Jason selected Yes, and tendrils of shadow curled around his head, twisting into the shape of a tattered hood. The fabric felt both weightless and suffocating at once, like wearing the last whispers of the dead. A chill ran down his spine as a faint sense of detachment settled over him¡ªthe world¡¯s noise now a distant murmur.
As he walked along the overgrown path, movement flickered at the edges of his vision. A creature formed from the same blackened vines that coated the ground. Jason used Identify.
Brierhound ¨C Grade F. A predator born from the creeping darkness. Its sinewy vines coil like living chains, wrapping around prey to strangle and ensnare.
You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.
Jason¡¯s pulse quickened as he noticed another lurking just beyond the first. They hunt in packs.
With growing unease, he drew Undying-Flame from the rent in reality and lunged at the nearest beast. ¡°Flame Crescent!¡± he shouted, slashing wide. A wave of fire erupted forward, striking the Brierhound dead-on. Flames spread across its twisted form as it yelped and thrashed violently.
The element of surprise was gone.
Jason barely had time to react before the second Brierhound lunged. He rolled, but the vines lashed out, wrapping around his ankles and yanking him off balance. The creature sank its fangs into his left shoulder, and pain exploded through his body. His vision swam as a wave of white-hot agony coursed through him.
Panic surged. His blade clattered from his grasp, vanishing into flames. He lashed out, landing desperate blows with his fists, but the Brierhound held firm.
Thump. Thump.
A deep pulse resonated inside him. His mind cleared.
With a single thought, Jason summoned The Devourer into his hand. He wasted no time, driving the blade into the Brierhound¡¯s side¡ªagain and again¡ªuntil the creature finally slumped lifelessly beside him. The moment stretched, breathless, before Jason shoved the corpse aside and staggered back, panting.
His shoulder burned, blood soaking through his sleeve. Then, a long, mournful howl echoed through the valley.
Jason looked up, eyes narrowing.
At the top of the hill stood another Brierhound. This one was twice the size of the others. Dark vines coiled and shifted across its massive frame like serpents waiting to strike. Jason¡¯s gut twisted as he used Identify
Alpha Brierhound ¨C Grade F. The relentless ruler of the pack. Larger, faster, and far more cunning than its kin. Its coiling vines move like living chains, striking before prey can react.
Jason clenched his fists, his shoulder throbbing¡ªa painful reminder of how narrowly he had survived the last fight.
Glancing at the fallen Brierhound, Jason muttered, ¡°Consume.¡± Once more, the void wrapped around the carcass, swallowing it in a silent vortex.
Brierhounds Consumed.
- Whip of the Brierhound ¨C A weapon crafted from its enchanted vines. Ensnares targets.
- Skill: Ensnare ¨C Control the vines of Umbrithil to trap a target. Warning: Only works in the domain of Umbrithil.
- One Razian Coin.
Jason sighed, knowing a skill locked to this region wouldn¡¯t benefit him in the long run. He selected the coin twice. A notification blinked, but he had no time to check.
The Alpha was already moving.
Unlike the others, it didn¡¯t charge recklessly. Instead, it stalked forward, its vines snaking across the ground, testing the terrain, waiting for an opening. Jason tensed. This wasn¡¯t just a brute¡ªit was a predator.
With a steadying breath, he switched back to Undying-Flame, gripping the hilt tightly. ¡°Flame Crescent!¡± he roared, slashing through the air. Fire surged forward, aimed at the Alpha¡¯s chest.
But the Alpha didn¡¯t dodge.
Instead, a thick vine lashed out, intercepting the attack. The fire sputtered against it, barely leaving a scorch mark before the vine recoiled and snapped toward Jason like a whip.
Jason braced himself, but another vine lashed out with blinding speed, slamming into his chest like a battering ram.
The impact sent him flying. He soared back fifty feet, crashing into an obsidian pillar. The stone cracked on impact.
Pain exploded through his ribs. His vision blurred.
Jason groaned, trying to push himself up, but his body refused to cooperate. Every muscle screamed in protest.
Darkness curled at the edges of his vision. He forced his fingers to move, his breath ragged. Not yet.
Then¡ª
A figure stepped into his fading sight.
His mind screamed at him to move, to react, but his body was already shutting down.
Everything went black.
Chapter Three
Agony.
It consumed him, stretching beyond pain into something deeper¡ªsomething elemental. Every fiber of his being screamed, but in the heart of that torment, a flickering candle stood. A fragile light, glowing with gentle warmth. Jason crawled toward it, desperate, drawn by the promise of relief just within reach.
Then, a voice rang out from the past.
¡°Jason, I know you¡¯re scared, but we¡¯re not powerless.¡±
His sister¡¯s voice¡ªsoft but strong, a shield against the storm of his suffering.
¡°I¡¯ll always be by your side, just like I know you¡¯ll be there for me.¡±
The light pulsed, beckoning him forward. But Jason hesitated. The warmth offered release, yet his sister¡¯s words anchored him. Even in the depths of his suffering, he knew he couldn¡¯t let go. Not yet.
Jason''s eyes snapped open.
A woman knelt beside him, her face etched with relief. Mid-twenties, strikingly beautiful, with an air of quiet determination.
¡°Oh, thank goodness you¡¯re awake!¡± she exclaimed.
Jason¡¯s throat felt like sandpaper. He forced out a hoarse whisper. ¡°Where... am I?¡±
¡°Not too far from where that Alpha Brierhound tossed you,¡± she said quickly. ¡°I saw you get launched and ran as fast as I could.¡±
Jason winced, shifting his sore body. ¡°How did you beat it? That thing was nasty.¡±
She smiled faintly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Oh, I didn''t defeat it. I used my ability, Sacred Sanctuary, to escape. It lets me move myself and up to two others to a safe location within one-hundred and fifty meters.¡±
Jason blinked. "That¡¯s incredible." Instinct took over, and he focused, using Identify.
Maggius
Race: Human
Grade: F
Class: Spirit Warden (Forerunner)
Jason raised an eyebrow. ¡°Maggius, huh? that''s ah... Unique name.¡±
A flush of embarrassment crept into her cheeks as she quickly averted her gaze.
¡°I... I didn¡¯t think this was real,¡± she admitted. ¡°When I got a prompt asking what I wanted to be called, I just said my gamer ID. But, uh... just call me Maggy. Please.¡±
Jason chuckled, despite the lingering pain. ¡°Maggy it is, then.¡±
You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.
His amusement faded as he frowned. ¡°Wait, you got a prompt? Weren¡¯t you greeted by an Oracle?¡±
¡°Oracle?¡± Maggy shook her head. ¡°No. One minute I was at dance practice, went to the restroom, and then... I was here. A few prompts popped up, I made a class selection, and then I got a quest to clear Triumverge Citadel. Killed some skeletons, and well... here we are.¡±
Jason exhaled slowly. She wasn¡¯t pulled in the same way I was.
¡°Well, once I heal up, I need to start hunting,¡± Jason said. ¡°Could use the practice. And I definitely need to get stronger.¡± He grimaced, feeling the dull ache still lingering in his body.
Maggy smiled, kneeling beside him. ¡°I can help with that.¡±
She placed her hands gently on his chest, and a soothing warmth spread through him. The pain eased, the bite marks closing into scabs. His breathing became lighter, easier.
Jason sat up, blinking in surprise. He still felt sore, but the crushing pain had lifted. Looking up, he saw that the sky had deepened into a sea of stars.
¡°Once morning comes, I need to get out and push myself,¡± Jason said. ¡°I didn¡¯t stand a chance against that Alpha, and I plan on changing that.¡±
Maggy nodded, but there was hesitation in her eyes. ¡°Do you mind if we ah... stick together? This place has me a little... unnerved.¡±
Jason nodded. ¡°Of course.¡±
It was time to address his notifications.
As he focused, an unfamiliar sensation swept over him. a wave of power washed through his body.
Well of power 20% full.
His body felt... stronger. Not in a sudden burst, but as if his injuries had forged something new within him. His body had adapted, growing leaner, tougher.
His reflexes felt sharper; his limbs lighter. His endurance had deepened, his body reinforcing itself.
Jason clenched his fist, feeling the subtle difference. I¡¯m changing.
Maggy studied him. ¡°You feel it, don¡¯t you?¡±
Jason nodded. ¡°Yeah. I feel like I could lift a car...¡±
She smiled knowingly. ¡°it''s crazy when I first got my... I guess level up I felt this pool of power swell inside me I''m guessing it''s the games version of mana.¡±
Jason exhaled, steadying himself. His fight with the Alpha Brierhound had nearly killed him. Next time, he wouldn¡¯t just survive. He¡¯d dominate.
Jason pulled one of the coins out from his inventory
Another notification flashed.
Arcane Emporium:
Base shop
the shop had several tabs all but two where locked to Jason the first was a survival tab the other basic food and drinking supplies.
opening the survival tab.

All other facets of the shop of the Razian Empire is restricted to those with merchant-class qualifications. please see a merchant to access the store. Jason frowned. He glanced at Maggy.
¡°You ever use the Arcane Emporium?¡± he asked.
Maggy shook her head. ¡°Nope. i havent heard of that."
"Here." Jason tossed her the coin.
The moment Maggy caught it, her pupils dilated as if she were reading something only she could see. After a second, she blinked, shaking her head.
"Huh... just got a prompt about a store. But it says it''s locked¡ªonly accessible to merchant-classes."
"Just another mystery to add to the list," Jason muttered, tossing the coin back into his inventory. He stretched, feeling the last remnants of exhaustion settling in. "Let¡¯s get some rest. We¡¯ll deal with this in the morning."
Chapter Four
This freezing wasteland thought it would be the death of him, sending those frozen bastards after him. But he made them regret it. He made them suffer. Their agony was satisfying, their screams carried on the icy winds. Yet, even that wasn¡¯t enough.
The true euphoria, the kind that surged through him like fire, came from hunting his favorite prey¡ªothers of his kind. Their fear, their pain, the way they struggled against the inevitable¡ it was unmatched. Nothing gave him greater pleasure than watching them break.
Each kill was a work of art, a masterpiece painted in crimson. Some begged. Some fought with all they had. Others, the pathetic ones, simply accepted their fate. Those were the least entertaining. He much preferred the ones who thought they had a chance, the ones who clung to the false hope of survival. It made their final moments all the sweeter.

He pulled his cloak tighter against the biting wind, his breath curling in misty tendrils before vanishing into the endless white expanse. The air was sharp, cutting into his skin like shards of glass, but he welcomed the pain. It reminded him that he was alive, that he was stronger than the pathetic weaklings he hunted.
A fresh trail of footprints stretched ahead, barely visible beneath the snowfall. His next target. His pulse quickened, excitement thrumming in his veins. It had been too long since he had tasted the thrill of the chase. He quickened his pace, his boots crunching softly against the frozen ground.
The hunt was on.
Chapter Five
Over the last few hours, Jason and Maggy had honed their skills through relentless battles, each fight sharpening their instincts and refining their abilities. Now, they stood before their most difficult challenge yet.
¡°Death Stalker ¨C Grade F. A petrified human wrapped in cursed rags, using those rags as weapons sharp enough to cut through steel. Left unchecked, these stalkers have razed entire settlements, their thirst for blood ever-growing.¡±
With a nod, Jason summoned Undying-Flame. He¡¯d learned that the creatures in this region were especially vulnerable to fire.
Handing Maggy a staff he¡¯d looted from an earlier fight, Jason said, ¡°Same as before. I¡¯ll attack from the front. Once it¡¯s distracted, hit it from behind.¡±
They waited for the Death Stalker to expose its back. The moment came, and Jason unleashed Flame Crescent. The searing fire arced through the air, slicing deep into the Stalker¡¯s back and severing one of its four rags. Encouraged by his progress, Jason charged in, fully engaged.
But the Death Stalker was blindingly fast. It lashed out, and though Jason defended as best he could, his inexperience with the blade became evident. Two of the rags struck deep into his legs, pinning him to the ground. The creature snarled, sensing victory as it loomed over him, ready to strike.
Luckily, Jason wasn¡¯t alone.
With a deafening crack, Maggy had cast Spirit Bolt, causing the Death Stalker to stumble. Grunting through the pain, Jason forced another Flame Crescent forward, the fiery arc carving another burning gash into the creature. Howling in fury, the last remaining rag shot toward Maggy¡¯s chest. It was mere inches from her when she vanished, her Sacred Sanctuary skill activating in the nick of time.

Jason clenched his jaw. No more mistakes.
Focusing through the pain, he unleashed a final Flame Crescent. Any more than three in quick succession, and he¡¯d pass out from the strain. But luck was on his side¡ªthe blade struck true, fire engulfing the Death Stalker before it disintegrated into ash, leaving behind only the scorched remains.
Jason used the familiar skill, Consume.
A notification popped up. Not enough remains for consumption. Skill failed.
A surge of energy coursed through Jason¡¯s body, filling his Ascendant Core. He could feel himself growing stronger, his power deepening.
Benchmark hit ¨C Ascendant Core filled 25%. New skills available.
¡¤ Skill Sync (Common): Gain the ability to use all non-combat-related skills without drawing your weapon.
¡¤ Harmonic Slash (Uncommon): Passive. The swordsman, attuned to their blade, can sense the weak points of their foe.
¡¤ Flash Step (Epic): Allows the user to teleport a short distance at high speed. However, each use places a heavy strain on the body. A physical step is required for activation.
Jason examined his choices carefully. Skill Sync was convenient but not immediately useful. Harmonic Slash had potential, but against these fire-weak enemies, he needed something more versatile. Flash Step, however, was a game changer. The ability to reposition mid-fight was too valuable to ignore.
A rush of exhilaration hit Maggy as their plan came together perfectly. The Death Stalker fell, and she could feel her own power surging as well. Smiling, she turned to glance at Jason¡ªjust in time to see him step forward and vanish from sight.
THUD.
The sound was followed by a loud smacking noise, and she turned to see Jason bouncing off one of the obsidian pillars, dazed and stumbling.
Jason groaned, staggering before collapsing onto his backside. ¡°Okay, maybe dreams of being a ninja, flashing in and out of combat, were a little out of reach for the moment.¡±
Maggy laughed softly, shaking her head. ¡°I thought you were supposed to be the warrior here, not the jester.¡±
Jason smirked, rubbing the back of his head. ¡°I¡¯ll get there. Just¡ need a little practice.¡±
Chapter Six
Maggy and Jason stalked back to where they first met. After hours of practice and a night''s rest, Jason had gained a better grasp of Flash Step. He estimated its range to be around a hundred feet. Off in the distance stood the beast that had crushed him before, the Alpha Brierhound.
This was it¡ªhis rematch. The beast that had humiliated him, left him bleeding, gasping for breath. But that was then. Now, he was stronger. He had trained for this moment, and he refused to be beaten again.
Two other Brierhounds lurked behind the Alpha. Jason turned to Maggy, grinning. "Let me take the Alpha. Can you handle the other two?"
"Not a problem. These things are more plant than beast, and my Spirit Bolt can tear them apart."
"You take the first shot. Wipe one out, and I¡¯ll get the Alpha¡¯s attention."
A flash of ethereal light lanced out from Maggy, striking the nearest Brierhound. A ghostly green shimmer spread through the creature before its eyes flared one last time. With a final, strangled howl, it collapsed to the ground, lifeless.
Jason let out a low whistle. "Remind me never to get on your bad side."
The Alpha turned to Maggy, locking onto her with glowing, predatory eyes. Jason reacted instantly. A brilliant arc of fire streaked toward the Alpha, striking its flank. With a furious roar, it spun and charged at him.
The Alpha Brierhound barreled forward, tearing into the earth with each powerful stride. Its vines twisted and coiled like living serpents, eager to ensnare him. Jason tightened his grip on Undying Flame. This was his rematch. The creature had nearly broken him before¡ªbut not this time.
With a burst of speed, Jason sprinted forward. The Alpha lashed out with a thick vine, but Jason activated Flash Step. His vision blurred for a split second before he reappeared behind the creature. The sudden shift nearly threw him off balance, but he recovered in time to slash a fiery arc across the Alpha¡¯s hindquarters. The beast howled as the flames seared its flesh, but it spun back, enraged.
The Alpha''s vines lashed out in rapid succession. Jason barely managed to block, each strike rattling his arms. One vine snaked around his ankle, yanking him off his feet. He slammed onto the ground, the impact knocking the breath from his lungs. The Alpha loomed over him, its fangs bared.
Jason¡¯s vision blurred as the Alpha loomed closer, its fangs bared. His body ached, exhaustion creeping into his limbs. He rolled onto his feet, body screaming in protest. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself forward, activating Flash Step.
The Alpha spun, eyes flashing as it locked onto him again, surging forward without hesitation., its glowing eyes locked onto its prey. Jason gritted his teeth, pain flaring through his limbs. He had to end this now.

As the Alpha closed in, Jason raised Undying Flame and shouted, "Flame Crescent!" A scorching arc of fire slashed through the air, colliding with the Alpha¡¯s chest. The beast roared but did not stop. Vines lashed out like whips. Jason dodged one, parried another, but the third struck him hard across the ribs, sending him sprawling.
Desperation drove him forward. Summoning every ounce of strength, he swung Undying Flame, pouring all his remaining mana into a final, devastating strike. The blade cut deep into the Alpha¡¯s neck. Flames erupted from the wound as the creature let out a bone-rattling howl.
Everything went still.
Then, with a heavy thud, the Alpha collapsed, smoke rising from its lifeless body.
He looked down at the Alpha¡¯s smoldering body, breath ragged. It had nearly killed him before¡ªnow, it lay defeated at his feet.
He clenched his fist, exhaling slowly. The tension in his muscles unwound, the exhaustion catching up to him. Not bad... I actually did it. A tired grin formed as he turned to Maggy.
Maggy, standing victorious over her own slain opponent, rushed toward him. He gave her a weak thumbs-up, wincing at the pain in his ribs. "I think... that went better than last time."
Maggy grinned, her relief evident. "That was insane. But we did it."
Jason turned to his fallen adversary, placing a hand on its massive body. The word came naturally. "Consume."
Alpha Brierhound Consumed.
Options available:
Leader of the Pack ¡ª With a feral howl, send your party into a state of bloodlust, increasing their physical abilities and granting a significant boost to resilience.
Chest Plate of the Alpha ¡ª Sturdy vines form perfectly to the wearer, providing excellent protection against piercing and slashing attacks. With a moderate amount of mana, the armor can self-repair.
5 Razian Coins
Jason carefully considered his choices. Leader of the Pack offered power, but it felt too primal for his style. The Constitution boost was tempting, but his focus shifted to his tattered clothes. The Chest Plate, sturdy and capable of self-repair, was too good to pass up.
He made his decision.
A low hum pulsed through Jason¡¯s core as the fallen Alpha¡¯s energy unraveled, reshaping itself into something new. A heartbeat later, the vines coiled around his torso, shifting into place. The vines slithered up his torso like living tendrils, tightening before solidifying into a rigid, protective weave. A faint pulse of energy coursed through him, and for a brief moment, Jason could feel the primal force of the Alpha within him.
Jason stretched lightly, testing the armor¡¯s flexibility. It moved with him, feeling almost like a second skin.
Maggy smirked, giving Jason¡¯s new armor an exaggerated once-over. ¡°So, what¡¯s next? Gonna start howling at the moon? Maybe challenge the other packs for dominance?¡±
Jason flexed, striking a ridiculous pose. ¡°Obviously. First order of business¡ªestablish my rule, then form an elite squad of flame-wielding werewolves.¡±
Maggy snorted. ¡°Right, and I¡¯ll just casually summon an army of ghosts to haunt the competition. We¡¯ll be unstoppable.¡±
Jason chuckled, stretching out his arms. ¡°Jokes aside, this armor¡¯s pretty great. You think it comes in different colors, or am I stuck looking like I rolled around in a hedge?¡±
¡°Nah, it¡¯s got that ¡®mysterious warrior¡¯ vibe. Very brooding. You¡¯ll be drowning in admirers.¡±
Jason scoffed. ¡°Yeah, because charred clothes and smelling like burnt dog really scream ¡®eligible bachelor.¡¯¡±
Maggy patted his shoulder. ¡°Embrace it. You¡¯re officially part dog now.¡±
Jason groaned. ¡°Great. First, I get nearly eaten. Now, I¡¯m stuck wearing my enemy.¡± He sniffed the air theatrically. ¡°Think I¡¯ll start chasing sticks too?¡±
Maggy smirked, tossing a twig in his direction. ¡°Only one way to find out.¡± Jason rolled his eyes but caught it mid-air. ¡°I hate how instinctively I wanted to grab that.¡±
Chapter Seven
¡°What¡¯s our next move?¡± Maggy asked, her voice soft over the crackling fire.
¡°We need to push inward,¡± Jason replied, staring into the flames. ¡°The boss is toward the center, and honestly, I wouldn¡¯t mind getting out of this godforsaken land.¡±
Maggy nodded, though her expression was troubled. ¡°I agree... I just don¡¯t like the whispers I hear when we get close to the center.¡±
Jason glanced at her, his face hardening slightly. ¡°I know what you mean. The first creature I faced here was responsible for those whispers. They¡¯re called Harrowers. They show you your worst memories, hoping to break your spirit.¡±
Maggy¡¯s eyes filled with tears, her voice trembling as she spoke. ¡°Jason, I don¡¯t know if I can... I¡¯ve almost broken with those whispers.¡±
"Here," Jason said, pulling off his hood and handing it to Maggy. "This should help. It won¡¯t block everything, but it¡¯s kept the worst of the whispers at bay." He hesitated before adding, "Back when I fought the first Harrower, something¡ snapped inside me. I don¡¯t know what it was, but it broke their hold over me. I need to figure out what that was¡ªand how to control it."
Maggy looked at him, her eyes softening with concern. She could see the fear lingering in his gaze. "Jason¡ I don¡¯t need to know every detail, but I can see what this is doing to you. You¡¯ve been carrying this alone for too long. You don¡¯t have to. If you ever need to talk, I¡¯ll listen. No judgment. No pity. Just¡ someone to share the weight."
Jason sighed, his shoulders sagging. He hadn¡¯t talked about this in so long, and yet, for some reason, the words began spilling out before he could stop them.
¡°I was seventeen when my sister and I lost our mother. She was all we had. Our father walked out years before she passed. I got a job and took care of us. It wasn¡¯t easy, but we had each other, and that was enough.¡±

Maggy listened quietly, watching the way his hands clenched into fists, his knuckles going white. He spoke in a steady voice, but there was something raw, something aching beneath his words.
¡°I worked every extra shift I could get for months,¡± Jason continued, his voice growing distant. ¡°I saved up, tried to make things normal for her. On her twelfth birthday, I took her to an amusement park. It was the happiest I¡¯d seen her in years¡ªlaughing, running from ride to ride like a kid should. And for the first time since Mom died... I thought maybe things would be okay.¡±
His breath hitched.
¡°Then we went home.¡±
Maggy¡¯s heart pounded. He was getting close to something¡ªsomething painful. But Jason didn¡¯t look at her. His gaze was locked onto the fire, as if he could see something beyond it.
¡°We had just started eating her birthday cake.¡± His voice was quieter now, each word slow, deliberate. ¡°Then, the front door flung open. I told her to run to the closet. But that sound... the way the hinges creaked¡ªI''ll never forget it.¡±
His hands were shaking now. His breathing turned shallow.
Maggy¡¯s stomach twisted. ¡°Jason...¡±
But he didn¡¯t seem to hear her. His shoulders tensed, his jaw clenched, and his breath shuddered as if the weight of that night was pressing down on him all over again.
¡°I¡ª¡± Jason¡¯s voice cracked. His fingers curled into his palms, nails biting into skin. He wanted to hold it in¡ªto lock it away, like he always did. But the weight of it, the memory, it was too much. His chest ached, breath shallow. And then... it broke him.
Maggy didn¡¯t think. She moved. Her arms wrapped around him before her mind could catch up¡ªbefore doubt could tell her to stop. But when he didn¡¯t pull away, when his entire frame trembled against her, she knew she had done the right thing.
His hands gripped her shirt tightly, his entire body shaking against hers. Ragged, uneven breaths turned into something deeper, uglier¡ªa storm of emotions he had buried for years, now crashing over him with no way to stop it.
Maggy said nothing. There was nothing to say.
So she held him. And he let her.
The fire crackled softly beside them. The night stretched on. Jason¡¯s breathing, though still unsteady, slowed as exhaustion pulled at him. And Maggy simply stayed there, her presence the only thing grounding him to the world.
Neither of them spoke. Not yet. The fire crackled, the weight of the night pressing on them both. Eventually, exhaustion won, pulling them into sleep¡ªtwo souls resting in the quiet, no longer alone in the dark.
Chapter Eight
Jason and Maggy had fought their way through 50 or so skeletons to push towards the middle, but by now, the undead barely slowed them. Each swing of Jason''s Undying Flame and every ethereal bolt from Maggy''s Spirit Bolt cut down the skeletal creatures with ease.
As they neared the castle, Maggy let out a breath of relief. She had finally reached the 25% threshold, and with it, unlocked a powerful new ability: Spirit Warden''s Aura. The notification glowed in her vision.
Spirit Warden¡¯s Aura
A protective aura radiates from the Spirit Warden, enveloping allies within a 100-yard radius. Those within its reach experience heightened resilience, their willpower bolstered, and wounds mending at an accelerated rate. The aura also dampens incoming physical damage, reducing its impact by a significant margin.
"Nice!" Maggy exclaimed, feeling the surge of power as the aura swelled. A soft glow radiated from her, extending outward in all directions. Jason felt it, too¡ªthe weariness in his limbs eased, and the toll of using Flash Step and Flame Crescent no longer weighed as heavily on his body.
¡°Spirit Warden Aura, huh?¡± Jason said with a grin. ¡°Looks like I¡¯ve got a little more breathing room now.¡±
Maggy smiled back, nodding. ¡°I¡¯ve got your back. We¡¯re not going down nearly so easily.¡±
A looming castle stood before them, its towering spires clawing at the sky like jagged bones. The structure was ancient, worn by time and the harsh elements of the region. The dark stone walls were cracked and crumbling in places, but the most striking feature was the thick, twisted vines that covered nearly every surface. These vines, the same as those Jason had seen throughout the region, were blackened and pulsated faintly with a sinister energy, as if they were alive¡ªfeeding on the castle itself.
The vines wove in and out of the stonework, wrapping around battlements and crawling up the towers like creeping fingers. Some even hung down like dark tendrils, swaying slightly in the unnatural breeze, as though they were waiting to ensnare anything that came too close. Thorns protruded from the vines, dripping with an oily black sap that gleamed in the low light. The vines, much like the Brierhounds they had faced, exuded a sense of malevolent hunger, as if they could choke the life out of anything they touched.
The castle¡¯s massive iron gates were rusted, their once proud sigils long faded and marred by the relentless encroachment of the vines. The gate was half-open, creaking in the wind, as if beckoning them forward into the darkness beyond. A low mist clung to the ground, swirling around their feet, giving the entire scene an eerie, almost ethereal quality.
Maggy glanced nervously at the vines, her voice low. ¡°The vines are everywhere... it¡¯s like the whole castle is being consumed by them.¡±
Jason nodded, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the fortress. ¡°It¡¯s like they¡¯re part of the castle now. And something tells me whatever¡¯s inside is feeding off them too.¡±
The castle radiated a palpable sense of dread, as if the walls themselves were watching, waiting for their next victim. Jason tightened his grip on Undying Flame, feeling the warmth of the sword as it flickered with inner fire.
Standing at the gates of the castle, a humanoid figure blocked their path. Its tattered, shadowy robes fluttered in the cold wind, the fabric eerily similar to the hood Maggy wore, though far more ornate and sinister in design. Chains hung from the figure¡¯s wrists, their ghostly links trailing off into the air, tethered to several pale, tormented spirits that hovered around it, their hollow eyes filled with despair.
Once they were within range, Jason instinctively used Identify.
The Harbinger of Despair
Grade F,
A fully awakened Harrower, this monstrosity has captured several souls to fuel its hatred for the living. Uses its chains to bind its prey to eternal torment.
Maggy¡¯s eyes narrowed, her voice filled with barely concealed rage. ¡°That thing... is pure evil.¡±
Jason, however, stood frozen. His face had gone pale, his body shaking. His eyes were hollow, lost in some far-off memory. The sight made Maggy¡¯s heart ache. She recognized that look the same haunted expression Jason had when he told her about his sister.
Reaching out, Maggy gently grabbed his hand, her fingers wrapping around his with warmth and reassurance. Jason latched onto her hand as though it were his lifeline, his grip tight, trembling like a drowning man clinging to safety. His breath came in ragged gasps, and his eyes flicked toward hers, full of fear and uncertainty.
¡°Jason,¡± she whispered, concern and urgency in her voice. ¡°Are you okay?¡±
For a moment, Jason couldn¡¯t answer, his mind swirling with the shadows of his past. But Maggy¡¯s presence grounded him, her hand a steady anchor in the storm of his emotions. He swallowed hard, blinking rapidly as he fought to regain control.
Smiling through the pain, Jason nodded. ¡°I am. I know the last thing she would want is for her memory to break me. We need to hit this thing fast and hard, break it before it can break us.¡± He glanced at Maggy, concern in his eyes. ¡°And how are you holding up?¡±
Maggy touched the Harrower hood on her head almost reverently. ¡°Surprisingly well. For now, don¡¯t worry about me. Let¡¯s focus on the challenge ahead.¡±
With those words, Jason summoned Undying Flame. His eyes narrowed as he activated Flash Step, instantly flickering to the side of the Harbinger. In a fluid motion, he unleashed Flame Crescent, the arc of fire slicing through the air. At the same time, Maggy fired a Spirit Bolt. Both attacks struck true, colliding with the Harbinger in perfect unison.
Flames, tinged with an ethereal glow, engulfed the Harbinger. Its agonized screeches filled the air, the only sign that something living was caught within the blaze.
Jason smirked, glancing at Maggy. Their battle chemistry had become something formidable a deadly combination of fire and spirit.

But then, the flames suddenly shot out in all directions, extinguishing themselves. The Harbinger emerged, standing taller than before, its body seemingly filled with more power. Its shadowy form rippled, and the chains around it clinked ominously.
¡°I should thank you both,¡± the Harbinger hissed, its voice dripping with malice. ¡°My pets have not known the beauty of suffering in quite some time. They could use some new friends.¡±
The Harbinger¡¯s glowing eyes locked onto Jason. ¡°You,¡± it whispered, its voice sending icy tendrils down Jason¡¯s spine. ¡°You have known the depths of despair. Let us explore those memories of yours.¡±
With inevitable, measured steps, the Harbinger approached Jason, its presence overwhelming. The whispers of dread filled the air, growing louder, more oppressive. Jason¡¯s body froze in place, locked in the grip of those voices. His breath hitched, fear clenching at his chest.
The Harbinger reached up, almost gently, and clasped a spectral chain collar around Jason¡¯s neck. The cold touch of the metal sent a shockwave of terror through him, the chains tightening as the weight of his worst memories began to pull him down.
¡°Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, dear Sabrina¡ happy birthday to you,¡± Jason finished singing, his heart light.
The moment shattered with the sound of breaking glass near the front door. The door rattled. Jason grabbed Sabrina, pushing her into the closet, holding her close as they both shook with fear. The door creaked open.
¡°I know you''re in here,¡± a voice called. ¡°Come out, give me all your money, and I¡¯ll be on my way.¡±
Jason stepped out, hands raised, trembling. ¡°I¡¯m sorry,¡± he stuttered. ¡°We don¡¯t have any money. This is all we have.¡± He pulled out four crumpled one-dollar bills.
The man sneered. ¡°Do you think I¡¯m an idiot?¡± He smashed the butt of his pistol into the side of Jason¡¯s head.
Jason hit the ground, stunned. Sabrina, brave beyond her years, ran out towards him.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A wet thump was the only sound that followed, then running footsteps echoing into silence.
Maggy gasped in horror as the Harbinger locked the chain around Jason¡¯s neck, her heart sinking. She had been selfish, keeping the hood. Jason was strong, but even he couldn¡¯t face that memory¡ªnot again. No one could. Now, because of her, Jason was trapped in that nightmare, forever.
Shaking her head, she firmed her resolve. She raised her hand and cast Spirit Bolt. The Harbinger grinned, outstretching its arms as if to embrace the attack. The glow rippled through the creature and snaked down the chains, directing the energy into Jason. His body convulsed, collapsing to the ground.
Maggy¡¯s heart pounded. Jason was slipping away¡ªshe could see it.
¡°Jason, listen to me! This isn¡¯t real! Don¡¯t let it win!¡±
The Harbinger laughed, the sound cold and mocking. ¡°You think he can hear you? No. He¡¯s mine.¡± The Harbinger laughed, its voice dripping with malice. ¡°You save him? I don¡¯t need to touch you to see your despair. You are weak and incapable of saving anyone. You should run while you still can.¡±
Maggy''s legs ached to run. she refused to leave Jason.
Inside Jason¡¯s mind, the nightmare began again. Sabrina lay no more than a foot away, her body cold and lifeless.
¡°Happy birthday to you¡¡± The song played again. The events unfolded just as they had before, but this time, cracks began to form in Jason¡¯s mind. He could feel himself slipping, piece by piece.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A little girl ran from the closet. BANG! BANG! BANG!
A little girl was yelling. BANG! BANG! BANG!
What was she yelling. BANG! BANG! BANG!
Jason¡¯s world blurred. He was fading, his will nearly gone. Sabrina ran out again, her voice piercing the haze, but something was different. She was yelling his name.
¡°Jason,¡± she screamed, over and over. ¡°Jason!¡±
¡°I can¡¯t do this anymore,¡± Jason whispered.
¡°Give in,¡± a voice echoed, smooth and dark. ¡°You¡¯ve already failed the one person who needed you. Give in to your despair.¡±
Jason sank deeper, slipping into the abyss. He was fading, his will nearly gone. Sabrina ran out again, her voice piercing the haze, but something was different. She was yelling his name.
¡°Jason,¡± she screamed, over and over. ¡°Jason!¡±
Jason¡¯s world blurred, the past and present twisting into a suffocating loop. But then¡ªher voice. pierced the darkness.
¡°None of this is your fault.¡±
¡°Yes, it is,¡± Jason sobbed. ¡°I was supposed to protect you. I failed you. I¡¯m so sorry.¡±
Her small hands caressed his face, tender and warm. ¡°Good men are not responsible for the choices of evil men. You are not to blame for this pain. But you are responsible for confronting it and healing from it.¡±
Jason¡¯s voice broke. ¡°How can I heal from a wound that runs so deep? How can I forgive myself for your death?
Sabrina pulled him close, her voice soft. ¡°The healing process is a long and unpaved road, but I know my big brother won¡¯t let my memory crush him. You¡¯re stronger than that.¡±
Thump. Thump.
Sabrina began to fade as Jason¡¯s senses slowly returned. With a parting word, she whispered, ¡°I love you, Jason.¡±
Maggy, still frozen in fear, suddenly doubled over in pain as the Harbinger kicked her hard in the stomach, leaving her gasping for air.
¡°You are unworthy of my chains,¡± the Harbinger snarled. ¡°I shall break you the old-fashioned way, nice and slow.¡±
It cocked back a fist, launching a brutal strike aimed at the back of Maggy¡¯s head. But before it could land, a hand caught its fist mid-air. Shocked, the Harbinger whirled around.
What it saw made it recoil in horror.
¡°Who is this man?¡± the Harbinger thought, staring at Jason in disbelief. ¡°This is impossible. He is my slave.¡±
Pulling on the chain wrapped around Jason¡¯s neck, the Harbinger tightened its grip, forcing more memories into Jason¡¯s mind. He screamed, eyes rolling back as the weight threatened to drag him under.
¡°You are mine,¡± the Harbinger hissed, voice thick with certainty. The chains tightened further¡ª
Thump. Thump.
A small crack appeared in the links as Jason grabbed the chains. The Harbinger stumbled backward, panic rising in its chest. ¡°What¡ what are you?¡±
The Harbinger lurched forward, grasping at Jason¡¯s mind one final time. The shadows surged, trying to pull Jason back down.
Thump. Thump.
The chain shattered with a deafening crack, the sound rippling through the air like a thunderclap. The Harbinger staggered back, clutching at its severed bonds, its spectral form flickering in panic.
"This... this isn¡¯t possible," it rasped, its voice no longer taunting, but trembling.
Jason stepped forward, the chains of lost souls still lingering in his grasp, their energy pulsing like an untamed storm. He felt them, not as shackles, but as something lighter, freed from their torment. They whispered not in despair, but in relief.
"You¡¯ve held them long enough," Jason said, his voice low, seething. With a single motion, he pulled. The chains vanished into him releasing the tormented soul, and with them, the Harbinger¡¯s last hope.
The monster gasped, stumbling, its form dimming as if the shadows themselves were abandoning it.
¡°You¡ you think you¡¯ve won? You carry me still, Jason. No flame can purge what is already inside you.¡±
The Harbinger¡¯s form flickered, chains unraveling into nothing.
¡°You can¡¯t kill me, Jason.¡±
Jason lifted Undying Flame, its fire roaring like a caged beast finally unleashed. The heat rippled through the air, the blade¡¯s light casting long shadows across the ruins.
The Harbinger, now just a flickering remnant of its former power, recoiled.
Jason¡¯s grip tightened.
"Burn."
And then he swung.
A pillar of fire erupted as the blade connected, consuming the Harbinger in a blinding inferno. Its final scream was drowned in the crackling flames, its form unmade, vanishing into the abyss from which it had come.
Jason took a shuddering breath, his body trembling from the weight of what had just happened. The chains were gone. The voices were silent.
His fingers brushed his throat, where the Harbinger¡¯s collar had burned into his skin.
No chains. No whispers. No ghosts pulling him back.
For the first time in years, the silence wasn¡¯t empty.
It was peaceful.
His knees buckled.
¡°Jason!¡± Maggy lunged forward, catching him before he hit the ground.
His vision swam. Maggy¡¯s voice was distant, frantic, but warm.
Maggy shook him, her voice breaking. "Jason, don¡¯t you dare. Don¡¯t you leave me!"
His weight sagged against her, his breathing shallow.
"Dammit, Jason¡ªstay with me!"
And then, everything went dark.
Chapter Nine
Jason stirred, his head still resting on Maggy¡¯s leg. The warmth of her fingers combing through his hair was soothing, almost enough to lull him back into unconsciousness. Almost.
Then, he heard her whisper.
¡°You¡¯ve always been weak... you always will be.¡±
Jason¡¯s breath caught. His eyes remained closed, but his body tensed ever so slightly.
¡°Once he''s recovered... I¡¯ll leave him,¡± Maggy continued, her voice barely above a breath. ¡°I can''t keep burdening him with my weakness.¡±
The words cut deeper than any blade. Jason had known that pain¡ªthe quiet agony of never feeling enough, of believing you were a burden. It had haunted him for years, its grip never fully loosening. And now, Maggy¡ she was drowning in the same doubt. He wanted to reach out, to tell her she was wrong. But exhaustion dragged him down, his thoughts slipping beneath its heavy tide before he could act.
The morning air was crisp, carrying the lingering scent of smoldering embers from the dying fire. Jason stirred, his senses slowly coming back to him. For the first time in what felt like days, he noticed a pang of hunger gnawing at his stomach.
A soft breath beside him caught his attention. Maggy was still asleep, curled up near the fire, her face relaxed in a rare moment of peace. Jason sat up slowly, careful not to disturb her, and stretched out the stiffness from the battle the night before.
The embers still glowed faintly, their warmth barely cutting through the crisp morning air. Jason pulled up the store interface, scanning through the options. A simple breakfast¡ªeggs, bacon, a small pan¡ªappeared before him in a soft shimmer.
He worked in silence, rekindling the fire before laying the pan over the heat. The first crack of an egg echoed through the quiet morning, followed by the rich sizzle of bacon. The scent of cooking food wafted through the air, stirring Maggy awake before Jason even had a chance to call her.
She groaned softly, stretching her arms as she blinked away sleep. Then, she inhaled deeply and sat up almost immediately, her eyes snapping to the fire. ¡°Holy hell¡ is that bacon?¡±
Jason smirked as he turned the strips over. ¡°I figured we deserved something better than dried rations.¡±
Maggy¡¯s expression was one of pure delight, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. She took a bite, closing her eyes as she let out a quiet hum of satisfaction. ¡°You might be my favorite person right now.¡±
Jason smirked, shaking his head. ¡°So, I¡¯ve been fighting undead for my life, but it¡¯s the bacon that makes me your favorite person?¡±
Maggy pointed at him with her fork. ¡°Correct.¡±
They ate in companionable silence, the fire crackling between them. But Jason¡¯s mind wasn¡¯t on the food. The words he had overheard last night still lingered, carving at the edges of his thoughts.
He set his plate down. ¡°Maggy¡¡± He hesitated, searching for the right words. ¡°About what you said last night, before I woke up.¡±
Maggy froze, her fork hovering mid-air. Slowly, she lowered it, her fingers tightening around the plate. ¡°What¡ what did you hear?¡± Her voice was quiet, hesitant.
Jason exhaled. ¡°You said you were weak¡ that when I recover, you¡¯d leave because you didn¡¯t want to be a burden to me.¡±
Maggy froze. A flicker of panic crossed her face before she quickly looked away. Her hands tightened around the plate, her knuckles turning white. ¡°I¡ I didn¡¯t think I said that out loud.¡±
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Jason reached over, his hand resting gently on hers. ¡°I used to think the same thing. That I was a burden. That people were better off without me. It took me too long to realize how wrong I was¡ªand I¡¯m not letting you make the same mistake.¡±
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she looked like she wanted to deny it. ¡°I don¡¯t feel strong,¡± she admitted, voice barely above a whisper. ¡°Every fight¡ every time I see you throwing yourself into danger, I just¡ª¡± She shook her head, swallowing hard. ¡°I feel useless. It was my own weakness that made you relive that torture; you need to give me the only protection you had.¡±
Jason¡¯s grip on her hand tightened, grounding her. ¡°You¡¯ve kept me going more times than I can count. You saved me, Maggy. you saw a complete stranger get flung by a monster that obviously stronger thana you and what did you do? you dove into the fray regardless of the danger to yourself. You¡¯re stronger than you give yourself credit for.¡±

She blinked rapidly, her emotions threatening to surface. ¡°I just don¡¯t want to hold you back.¡±
Jason gave her a reassuring smile. ¡°You¡¯re not, if anything pushing forward, giving me more of a reason to grow. We¡¯re in this together. And I need you here.¡±
Maggy studied his face for a long moment, then let out a shaky breath. A small, reluctant smile tugged at her lips. ¡°Alright. I¡¯ll stay.¡±
Jason grinned, nudging her shoulder lightly. ¡°Good. I wasn¡¯t planning on letting you go anyway.¡±
The air between them shifted, lighter than before. They finished their breakfast, the doubts and fears that had once weighed heavy began to lift.
After the meal, Jason leaned back, stretching his arms over his head, his body still aching from the previous night¡¯s battle. His mind wandered briefly to the unread notifications hovering at the edge of his vision. Filled with excitement he opened the notifications to see what he''d earned.
well of power filled 33%
A slow warmth spread through Jason¡¯s limbs, but it wasn¡¯t just heat¡ªit was something deeper, something raw. His muscles tensed, his heartbeat steadied, and when he clenched his fingers into a fist, power coiled beneath his skin, ready to surge at a moment¡¯s notice. He exhaled sharply. This¡ This was Addictive.
he opened the final notification
Blessing of the Forgiven
Bestowed upon those who have confronted the ghosts of their past and emerged with newfound purpose, this blessing grants the ability to sever the chains of suffering. The bearer may bring solace to the lost, granting them release from torment. Only those who have endured the depths of sorrow may wield this power with true understanding.
Jason¡¯s breath hitched as tears welled up¡ªnot from exhaustion or pain, but from recognition. A truth he hadn¡¯t been ready to face until now. he wasn''t to blame for the decision of another person. it was not his fault that evil had found him and his sister that day. that was a burden that was not his to carry. and with this blessing he knew that he had to help those who were trapped in the same lie. He could help them find release; the same release Sabrina had offered him.
a smile crept onto his face. in all the years since his sister passed not once did, he expect that he''d be able to forgive himself.
But last night, in the depths of his nightmare, he had faced it. And hearing Sabrina tell him to not let her memory crush him. Something changed in him at that moment. The guilt, once suffocating, finally loosened its grip. For the first time in years, moving forward felt possible.
Maggy noticed the shift in his expression. ¡°What is it?¡±
Jason turned to her, his voice soft but filled with awe. ¡°I received a blessing¡ the Blessing of the Forgiven. It¡¯s... it¡¯s hard to explain, but I think it means I can help those who are stuck in their own darkness, who can¡¯t find their way out. I think that is what I did for those tormented souls the Harbinger collected.¡±
Maggy stared into the fire, her brows furrowed. ¡°that''s well incredible." she paused for a moment considering "I don¡¯t know if I¡¯ll ever understand why we were chosen for this, or why this is happening.¡± she murmured. ¡°But¡ if we¡¯re changing, if we¡¯re becoming something more¡ maybe that¡¯s not all bad. for a blessing to help lost souls. maybe just maybe something good can come from all this.¡±
Jason nodded, still processing the weight of the blessing. ¡°Yeah... maybe. I just never imagined something like this. Honestly, I never imagined the thought of forgiving myself.¡±
¡°You¡¯ve earned it,¡± Maggy said gently. ¡°It¡¯s part of your journey, moving past the pain, and using what you¡¯ve learned to help others do the same.¡±
Jason smiled, feeling the truth in her words. The burden of his past would always be with him, but now it felt lighter. Not that it was gone, not entirely. But because he learned to carry the weight.
The blessing was more than a gift, it was a responsibility. One that he was ready to embrace.
They made their way to where the Harbinger had fallen, its dark, twisted form still radiating a faint, malevolent energy. Jason knelt beside the fallen creature, placing his hand over its remains. He steeled himself and called out,
¡°Consume.¡±
Harbinger Consumed.
Chains of the Tortured (Epic)
Call forth ethereal chains binding the souls of the broken. The more the souls suffer, the more strength they offer. Direct damage received is transferred to the souls, enhancing your strength. If the damage exceeds the souls'' limit, the chains will shatter, releasing the souls.
Staff of Eternal Sorrow (Epic)
Forged from the remains of the Harbinger of Despair, this staff channels the lingering torment of lost souls. Twisted and gnarled, the staff is blackened as if scorched by despair, with faintly glowing spectral chains coiling around its length. Its head is adorned with a shard of translucent obsidian, pulsing with the tortured energies of those it has claimed.
100 Razian Coins
His eyes lingered on the Chains of the Tortured. The thought of absorbing that kind of strength¡ªof wielding the same power that had nearly broken him¡ªmade his fingers twitch. But then he remembered the sight of those tormented souls, their eyes hollow, their suffering endless. He exhaled sharply, disgust rolling in his gut. Some power wasn¡¯t worth the cost. The Chains of the Tortured, the Staff of Eternal Sorrow¡ªboth were forged in suffering, built on the pain of others. He felt a knot in his stomach, repulsed by the very idea of using such dark, twisted power.
He selected the third option, choosing the 100 Razian coins. As soon as he made his choice, the sickening aura of the other options seemed to recede, leaving him with a sense of relief. Jason stood up, taking a deep, and was thankful he was strong enough to not fall into the temptation of that power.
Maggy approached, noticing the tension in his face. "You okay?"
Jason nodded slowly. "Yeah... I just¡ª" He shook his head, trying to shake off the lingering unease. "I couldn¡¯t stomach the thought of using something made from that thing."
Maggy smiled softly, understanding. "Smart choice. We don¡¯t need more darkness hanging over us."
Jason glanced back at where the Harbinger had fallen, his resolve hardening. "No, we don¡¯t,¡± Jason said, glancing at the sky. For the first time in a long while, he felt like he¡¯d truly made the right choice. No chains. No ghosts. Just a path forward."
Chapter Ten
Pushing against the heavy, iron-bound doors of Dread Spire Keep, Jason and Maggy entered the foreboding halls. The aura of despair that emanated from the keep was palpable, an oppressive weight that pressed down on them as soon as they crossed the threshold. The air hung thick with the scent of damp stone and decaying wood, the eerie stillness filled the corridors, as if the keep itself was waiting for them to falter.
The world around them was twisted in unnatural ways. Blackened vines, thick and pulsing faintly with dark energy, slithered up the cold, cracked stone walls. The ceiling loomed high above, lost in shadows that shifted and moved as though something unseen lurked within them. Occasional torches flickered dimly, their flames barely able to hold back the encroaching darkness. The oppressive silence was broken only by the distant, hollow echoes of unseen movements deeper within the keep.
The whispers of the past reverberated, louder and harsher than ever, clawing at their minds, their venomous words sharper in the suffocating atmosphere.
Jason clenched his fists, feeling the cold dread creeping at the edges of his mind. But this time, something was different. The Blessing of the Forgiven pulsed within him, a small but steady light, pushing back the whispers. The memories they tried to dredge up no longer held the same power over him. His resolve remained firm, even as the malevolent aura tried to break him. It wasn¡¯t easy, but the blessing had already begun to show its worth.
Maggy, on the other hand, faltered momentarily. Her hand reached up, gripping the hood of the Harrower that Jason had given her. The whispers clawed at her insecurities, but she pressed forward, determined not to give in to the despair that lingered in the air like a poisonous fog.
¡°This place¡¡± Maggy whispered, her voice strained, ¡°it feels alive. Like it¡¯s feeding off of us.¡±
Jason nodded grimly. ¡°It is. Stay close. We¡¯ll face whatever comes together.¡±
The halls of the keep seemed to stretch endlessly, each turn revealing more of the same. Every step echoed hollowly, amplifying the sensation of being watched by unseen eyes. The stagnant air made each breath feel labored, and the deeper they ventured, the heavier the weight of the whispers became.
The first Harrowers came in silent, drifting specters of torment, their chains dragging against the stone with an eerie metallic hiss. Jason and Maggy barely had time to brace before the nearest one lunged.
Jason swung Undying Flame, its fire carving a brilliant arc through the darkness. The Harrower screeched as flames consumed its tattered form, but behind it, two more figures emerged from the gloom, their ghostly eyes pulsing with malignant hunger.

Maggy thrust her hands forward. "Spirit Bolt!" A lance of ethereal light tore through one of the creatures, its form unraveling like smoke. But even as it faded, the whispers in the air grew louder, as though the keep itself resented the destruction of its servants.
Then, the tide surged.
From the shadows, more Harrowers slithered forth, their hollow moans filling the corridor. Jason counted at least six now, their chains writhing like living things. They didn¡¯t run or charge¡ªno, these things stalked, closing in with slow, deliberate movements, as if savoring their prey¡¯s growing exhaustion.
One of the Harrowers flicked its arm, and a spectral chain shot out, wrapping around Jason¡¯s forearm. The moment it made contact, The whispers clawed at his mind, dragging him toward memories best left buried. But where before they had crushed him, now they faltered against the steady warmth in his chest. The Blessing pulsed¡ªsmall, but unwavering¡ªa flicker of light against the endless dark.
"Jason!" Maggy¡¯s voice cut through the fog. She raised her staff and slammed it down.
"Spirit Ward!" A ripple of protective energy surged outward, breaking the chain¡¯s hold on Jason.
Shaking off the mental attack, Jason gritted his teeth and flashed forward. With a burst of speed, he slashed at the Harrower that had nearly ensnared him, his flaming blade cleaving through its chest. The specter howled as it disintegrated, but already, more were crawling forth from the depths of the keep.
The air itself felt like it was growing heavier, pressing down on them, suffocating. The whispers turned to screams¡ªlaughter, sobbing, voices pleading for salvation.
"There''s too many!" Maggy panted, her hands trembling as another Spirit Bolt left her fingertips, piercing through yet another specter.
Jason turned, scanning their surroundings. They couldn¡¯t hold this ground forever. or every Harrower they felled, another two emerged, seeping from the cracks of the keep itself. The air thickened with their presence, the very walls whispering their despair. The stone beneath Jason¡¯s feet pulsed¡ªseeming to give way to chains trying to drag them under.
"Stick together," he ordered, stepping in front of Maggy. "We cut through, we don¡¯t stop!"
Another Harrower rushed them, its arms unraveling into long, bladed chains. Jason ducked low, then surged upward, his sword carving a molten crescent through its form. As its scream faded, he grabbed Maggy¡¯s wrist.
"Run!"
The two bolted down the corridor, dodging outstretched chains and spectral hands that clawed from the walls themselves. Jason cut down anything that got too close, his flames illuminating the suffocating darkness.
The keep howled around them, as if enraged at their defiance. The halls twisted¡ªshadows deepened, doorways seemed to vanish, and the air thickened with dread.
They pushed forward, pushing against the suffocating force of despair, battling through the endless tide of Harrowers. With every step, Jason felt the Blessing of the Forgiven burning within him, keeping the crushing weight of the keep¡¯s influence at bay.
Then, finally¡ª
A massive set of doors loomed ahead, towering monuments of black iron, etched with symbols long worn away by time. Every step forward felt like wading through a tide of misery, the air thick, suffocating. The whispers screamed now¡ªa deafening chorus of agony, demanding they turn back
He didn¡¯t slow. "Maggy, together!"
With a shared nod, they threw their weight against the doors. Stone groaned, reluctant, before the hinges finally gave way. The doors yawned open, unveiling the heart of Dread Spire Keep¡ªand the nightmare waiting beyond.
Chapter Eleven Umbraxis, the Shrouded Betrayer.
The massive doors to the central chamber swung open with a heavy creak, revealing a sight that sent a chill down Jason and Maggy¡¯s spines. The room was vast, its high ceilings lost in shadow, but the most disturbing sight was the hundreds of tormented souls chained to the walls. Their hollow eyes stared blankly ahead, their bodies emaciated and twisted, veins of dark energy weaving in and out of their ghostly forms like parasitic vines. They barely moved, their suffering so deep it had reduced them to nothing more than shadows of what they once were.
In the center of the room, a throne carved from obsidian dominated the space. The throne pulsed with an eerie, ghostly glow, as though the very stone was alive and feeding off the agony of the souls that filled the chamber. The faint whispers of the tortured echoed around the room, their suffering palpable, a constant reminder of the horror that had taken hold of this once-thriving kingdom.
Maggy and Jason stepped cautiously into the room, the oppressive atmosphere weighing heavily on them. Every step felt like they were walking deeper into a nightmare. As they approached, the figure sitting on the throne stirred, his form shrouded in darkness save for his eyes, eyes that glowed with an unnatural inner light, burning with malevolent power.
¡°Welcome,¡± the figure said, his voice smooth and cold, laced with a dark charisma. ¡°Welcome to my humble home.¡±
Jason tightened his grip on Undying Flame, his muscles tensing. Maggy stood beside him, her heart pounding as her gaze flickered around the room, taking in the sight of the enslaved souls bound to the walls.
The figure on the throne shifted slightly, his eyes settling on Maggy, a faint smile curling his lips. ¡°My name is Umbraxis,¡± he continued, ¡°and I am the lord of these lands.¡±
Umbraxis¡¯s gaze lingered on Maggy for a moment longer before he chuckled softly, his voice carrying a chilling undertone. ¡°I see you¡¯ve killed what were once my citizens and know wear them like a trophy.¡±
Maggy flinched at his words, her breath catching in her throat. Her hand rising towards the hood, but she forced herself to stand firm, her hand instinctively tightening around the handle of her staff.
Umbraxis¡¯s smile widened as he watched her reaction. ¡°No need to fear, my dear. You see I too understand the weak are nothing more than steppingstones for the strong. You see the reason they became those dreadful creatures, the Harrowers, is because of a pact I made long ago. A small price to pay for great power.¡±
He rose slowly from his throne, the air around him thickening with dark energy. His movements were deliberate, calculated, as if every step he took commanded the very shadows themselves. ¡°You see,¡± he continued, ¡°this land was once a thriving kingdom. My kingdom. Its people loyal, prosperous, and full of hope. But power... true power... requires sacrifice.¡±
His voice grew darker, and the room seemed to grow colder. ¡°I wanted more than to be a king of a mere kingdom. I wanted dominion over souls of my subjects. So, I made a deal. I sacrificed every last one of them, my people, my citizens, so that I could gain mastery over life and death.¡±
Maggy¡¯s eyes widened in horror. ¡°You sacrificed an entire kingdom¡ for power?¡±
Umbraxis nodded, as if the weight of his actions meant nothing to him. ¡°Power always demands a price. What is a kingdom of lives compared to the eternal mastery of souls?¡± He gestured to the chained spirits around the room, his voice almost reverent. ¡°These souls are my strength. Their torment fuels me, their suffering binds me to this power. They are mine, forever. In death, they serve me more than they ever did in life.¡±
Jason¡¯s jaw clenched, his anger rising. ¡°You turned your own people into those things,¡± he spat, his voice thick with disgust.
Umbraxis¡¯s gaze flickered to Jason, amusement flashing in his glowing eyes. ¡°Do not mistake me for a ruler who cared for his people. Their lives meant nothing, compared to the power I have gained. And now, even in death, they serve me, same as you.¡±
He paused, his smile fading slightly as he looked back at Maggy. ¡°But you... you are interesting. I see in you the potential for great power, if only you¡¯d be willing to sacrifice what holds you back. You too may command the souls of the dead.¡±
Jason stepped forward, the heat of Undying Flame intensifying in his hand. ¡°We¡¯re not here for your offers, Umbraxis. We¡¯re here to end the suffering of these people.¡±
Umbraxis let out a low, menacing chuckle, his form becoming more imposing as the shadows around him seemed to grow darker. ¡°End this? Oh, no, little mortals. You¡¯ve only just arrived. This conflict this war has nothing to do with an insignificant creature such as yourself. And you think you can stop me? You think you can undo the power I¡¯ve forged from the despair of thousands? I have become eternal!¡±
The air in the chamber began to pulse with dark energy as Umbraxis raised his arms, the souls chained to the walls writhing in agony as they fed him more power. As the wails rang out the shadows around Umbraxis began to form into Harrowers. ¡°Soon enough you will goin them, and you will become part of my eternal kingdom¡± he hissed. looking at Jason. ¡°And you shall embrace your potential and serve me.¡± he said this last part looking at Maggy.
Jason¡¯s heart pounded, his grip tightening on his sword as the room filled with dark energy, but his resolve did not waver. Maggy stood firm beside him, her eyes filled with determination despite the fear that gnawed at her. They had come too far to let Umbraxis break them now.
Umbraxis smiled coldly, the light in his eyes flaring as the shadows swirled around him like a living storm. ¡°Come then, little want to be heroes. Face the true power of despair.¡±
Without warning, dark chains erupted from the floor, lashing toward them. Jason reacted instinctively countering with a powerful Flame Crescent, the fiery arc slicing through the air toward Umbraxis tearing through multiple Harrowers. The dark lord simply raised his hand, summoning a barrier of black chains that absorbed the flames channeling them to the tortured souls linked to the chains, causing them to shirk. He smiled darkly, eyes glowing with malice.
Maggy raised her staff, firing a Spirit Bolt directly at Umbraxis. The ethereal energy shot across the room, sensing the strike Umbraxis simple stepped to the side allowing the bolt to pass striking harmlessly against the wall.
Jason dodged another set of chains, his mind racing. He needed to weaken Umbraxis a direct attack didn''t seem to have any effect. he needed to break his connection to the enslaved souls fueling his power. But the dark lord was relentless, summoning more and more chains, each one faster than the last.
In a blink of an eye, one of the chains smashed into Jason throwing him across the room. Umbraxis laughed, his voice reverberating through the chamber. ¡°You cannot hope to stop me, boy. You are far beneath my notice.¡±
the shadows around Jason began to solidify twenty or so Harrowers formed around Jason separating Maggy and Jason. As he stumbled back to his feet, he slashed through another Harrower, its form dissolving in a burst of dying wails. His breath came in sharp, ragged gasps, but he didn¡¯t stop. Couldn¡¯t stop. Maggy was still in the thick of it, weaving through the storm of chains that lashed toward her. She twisted, barely ducking one that would have snapped her spine in half.
Another chain shot from the darkness.
¡°Maggy, left!¡± Jason shouted, lunging toward her.
She pivoted on instinct, narrowly dodging the strike. But the moment of distraction cost her. Her foot caught on uneven ground. Jason watched, horror blooming in his chest, as her balance faltered¡ªjust for an instant.
That was all it took.
A shadow-forged chain snapped forward like a viper, coiling around her ankle before she could react. It yanked her off her feet, dragging her toward Umbraxis¡¯s waiting grasp. She clawed at the bindings, thrashing, but the more she struggled, the tighter they constricted.

Jason lunged, heart hammering, but another chain lashed across his chest, sending him sprawling. No, no, no! He scrambled to his feet, pushing past the searing pain in his ribs. His vision tunneled¡ªMaggy was the only thing he saw.
Umbraxis loomed over her, a slow, predatory smile curling on his lips.
¡°You¡¯ve worn this little trinket for long enough,¡± he murmured, fingers curling around the hood that shielded her from his whispers.
With a slow, deliberate motion, he peeled the hood away.
Maggy¡¯s scream cut through the chamber like a dagger.
The moment the fabric left her skin, the unseen barrier that had protected her mind shattered¡ªand the whispers crashed into her like a tidal wave.
She convulsed; her eyes blown wide in terror. Her breath hitched, coming in short, sharp gasps as her body locked up. Jason knew that look. He had lived it.
"No!" Jason roared; his voice raw with desperation.
A torrent of Flame Crescents erupted from his blade, a wall of fire raging toward the dark lord. But Umbraxis merely turned his head, watching the inferno approach with a bemused smile.
Then he raised a single hand.
The fire collided with the chains around the enslaved souls instead, igniting Umbraixs a blaze. The flames ignited the captured souls, tormented wails filled the chamber funneling power back into Umbraxis, his laughter ringing like a death knell.
"This is delicious," he said, mockingly. "Watch as your pitiful attacks only fuel my power." Pulling harder on the chains using the newfound agony of the souls the shadows coalesced into a Harbinger of Despair the same creature that nearly broke him the day before. "Go and deal with that one."
Jason¡¯s fury burned hotter than any fire his sword could summon, but the reality of the situation crashed down on him. He quickly gave any ground he made up under the attack of the Harbinger and Harrowers. he wasnt strong enough to protect her.
And Maggy¡ªMaggy was utterly defenseless.
Umbraxis¡¯s fingers curled around the edge of her hood.
And with one smooth motion, he pulled it away.
Maggy¡¯s breath hitched.
The moment the hood left her head, the floodgates burst open.
The whispers hit her like a tidal wave.
She convulsed, her eyes going wide as she gasped for air, her entire body trembling. The voices clawed at her mind, slithering into every crevice of her thoughts. They whispered her worst fears, her deepest doubts.
"You are weak."
"You are nothing without him."
"You hold him back."
Maggy¡¯s body locked up, her spirit under siege, her breathing was ragged, but she forced herself to focus. No. No, I¡¯m not. She dug her nails into her palm, the sharp pain grounding her. She wouldn¡¯t let Jason fight this thing alone.
Jason skidded across the floor, chains binding him tight, twisting his arm forcing him to drop his blade. The Harbinger grinned as he approached, dagger poised to strike.
"Do not kill that one. ive nearly broken this one, he will serve as her first bound soul." Umbraxis commanded.
The shadows thickened, pressing down on Maggy like an overwhelming weight. The faint spark in her eyes flickered, growing dimmer with every whispered word from Umbraxis.
Jason fought against the chains with all his strength, his muscles screaming, his breath ragged. But it wasn¡¯t enough. He wasn¡¯t fast enough. Strong enough.
Maggy saw the panic in Jason¡¯s eyes as Umbraxis loomed over her. She couldn¡¯t let him break¡ªnot now.
"Jason!" she shouted, forcing strength into her voice. "I need you! I need you to fight!"
Jason¡¯s breath hitched.
Thump. Thump.
Umbraxis sneered. "He cannot save you."
Maggy didn¡¯t listen. She focused on Jason, her voice rising above the whispers. "You¡¯ve never been powerless! You¡¯re stronger than this!"
Thump. Thump.
Jason¡¯s fingers curled into fists. His breath grew heavy.
"Only I can free you," Umbraxis whispered, his hand gripping Maggy¡¯s chin.
Jason gasped for air. His hands shook¡ªnot from weakness, but from cold, bitter reality that he could lose her.
"No... No, I won''t lose her."
Jason¡¯s heart pounded. His mind screamed. He wasn¡¯t strong enough, wasn¡¯t fast enough¡ªand Maggy was about to suffer for it. NO. That was when he felt it¡ªthe crack deep inside his soul. A pressure, a force. Then, something inside him shattered. Fire surged. His body ignited. With a monstrous roar, power erupted from his core, his very being igniting like a wildfire. The chains binding him cracked¡ªthen shattered. The Harbinger closest to him barely had time to react before Jason ripped its head clean off.
Umbraxis¡¯s glowing eyes widened in shock. ¡°What¡ª?¡±
With blinding speed Jason closed the distance fist connecting with Umbraxis making him stagger and lose the connection he had with Maggy.
Jason pursued, his fists blazing with the fury of his awakening. Every punch connected with a sickening crunch, Umbraxis¡¯s shadowy form splintering under the relentless assault.
Umbraxis realizing he was not going to overpower this mortal with raw strength, he changed tactics.
As Jason reared back for another devastating blow, Umbraxis¡¯s form rippled¡ªdissolving into pure shadow. His entire body melted into darkness, retreating like ink spilling into water. Jason¡¯s next strike hit only air.
¡°You think brute force alone can destroy me?¡± Umbraxis¡¯s voice slithered through the chamber, coming from every direction.
Jason spun¡ªtoo slow. A shadow tendril coiled around his throat, yanking him off the ground. He gasped, vision darkening. Then¡ªa crackling bolt of spiritual energy ripped through the tendril, severing it.
Seeing the odds begging to stack against Umbraxis raised his hands, summoning the remainder of his strength into a massive wave of shadow to crash down onto Jason. breathing heavily Umbraxis felt relief, that mortal had startled him. That surge of power was terrifying, but ultimately futile, just like this woman''s attempts at resisting his will. then horror struck Umbraxis as Jason broke free from the shadows. what happened next he barely had time to registered. Before he could react, his body hit the ground. The room spun as Jason appeared above him, eyes burning with a fire unlike anything the dark lord had ever seen. Then came the first punch. And another. And another.
Each blow sent cracks through Umbraxis¡¯s form. Shadows sputtered, trying to hold him together, but Jason was relentless.
Jason pinned Umbraxis, but the dark lord''s shattered form twisted, struggling to pull itself back together. Jason¡¯s world had narrowed to a singular, unrelenting focus: destroying this bastard.
Fists cracked against Umbraxis¡¯s dissolving form, each strike sending ripples through the dark energy that struggled to reform him. Again, and again. Jason couldn¡¯t stop, wouldn¡¯t stop, not while this shadowy bastard still had breath.
His knuckles split open, blood mixing with the remnants of Umbraxis¡¯s body. He didn¡¯t care. The raw pain barely registered. This thing had tried to take Maggy from him¡ªhad nearly succeeded. The beast within Jason howled for vengeance, and he was happy to oblige.
Behind him, Maggy staggered forward, leaning on her staff for support. He was winning, but it wasn¡¯t over. The dark tendrils still pulsed, still grasped at Umbraxis, trying to pull his shattered form back together.
"I believe you said something about me controlling souls," Maggy said, her voice hoarse but unwavering. "Let¡¯s put that to the test."
Maggy¡¯s fingers trembled as she pressed them against the writhing mass of shadows, sweat slicking her palms. She could feel the souls trapped within¡ªhundreds, maybe thousands¡ªall clawing at the void, desperate for freedom. But they weren¡¯t just suffering. They were fueling Umbraxis. Each wail, each flicker of pain, fed him, stitched him back together like a cursed tapestry of despair.
Jason was winning, but it wasn¡¯t over. So long as those souls still fed Umbraxis, he would never die.
Maggy reached out with her spirit, trying to sever the link. The moment she did, she recoiled. It was like plunging her hands into a sea of rot¡ªfoul, festering, ancient. The shadows bucked against her, resisting with a will of their own. The sheer weight of Umbraxis¡¯s power crashed against her mind, pushing her back like a storm tide.
She wasn¡¯t strong enough.
Her teeth clenched. But Jason was.
Her gaze snapped to him. His fists rained blow after blow on what remained of Umbraxis. His eyes burned too bright, his muscles rippling under the strain of something beyond him. The air around him hummed with barely contained power.
That flame inside him¡ the blessing¡
Maggy had seen it before, felt it when she healed him and knew she could guide it. She forward lunged, pressing one hand to Jason¡¯s back and the other against the writhing shadows. Maggy¡¯s breath hitched as raw, blistering energy coursed through her veins. It was like holding the sun in her hands. Too much. Too bright. Too vast. She didn''t know if could she survive it let alone control it?
"But Jason needed her. And if she couldn¡¯t do this¡ they were both dead.
The moment she tried, it was like throwing open a dam.
Fire surged through her.
Maggy gasped as raw, blistering energy coursed through her veins. Her nerves screamed as her body became the conduit¡ªas Jason¡¯s blessing passed through her, down her arms, and into the seething core of Umbraxis¡¯s soul severing the connection to the tormented souls.
The reaction was immediate.
the shadows around Umbraxis convulsed pushing Jason and Maggy backwards.
Umbraxis howled as the spectral chains shattered, his stolen souls vanishing into the ether. The darkness around him rippled, collapsing inward, but his eyes burned with pure hatred.
¡°No,¡± he hissed. "You are nothing but sparks in the abyss. You cannot¡ª"
Jason moved.
He Flash-Stepped forward, a blur of motion. Umbraxis barely had time to react before Jason¡¯s hand clamped around his throat.
¡°You wanted my despair?¡± Jason growled. ¡°Choke on it.¡±
A firestorm erupted. As Jason summoned Undying Flame burning white-hot, the intensity of Jason¡¯s will igniting a blaze that consumed everything. The castle walls shook, shadows evaporated into searing light. Maggy stumbled back, shielding her eyes as the heat surged.
Umbraxis¡¯s form writhed, eyes wide with something he hadn¡¯t felt in centuries¡ªfear. ¡°No, no, this isn¡¯t how it ends¡ªI cannot fall to a mortal! You¡ you don¡¯t understand what¡¯s coming!¡± His voice cracked, the last vestiges of his pride turning to desperation. ¡°I can give you power, knowledge¡ªanything you desire! Just don¡¯t¡ª¡±
Jason¡¯s grip tightened. The flames silenced Umbraxis forever.
Silence fell. Jason staggered, sword digging into the ground. The castle trembled. The darkness was gone.

Jason grimaced at the Chains of the Fallen. It was just another darker version of the same abilities he''d passed on before. Power gained by enslaving others¡¯ souls, no matter how strong, it wasn¡¯t a price he was willing to pay.
His eyes settled on the second option: Essence of the Dread Lord. A legendary item. The idea of becoming a Dread Lord repulsed him, but something about the third option gave him pause. Could it enhance Maggy¡¯s spirit-based skills? She did touch both our souls, I Imagine this could help her.
With a nod, he selected the Essence of the Dread Lord. A vial appeared in his hand, filled with dark liquid that glowed faintly, swirling like liquid shadow. Jason looked at it for a moment before slipping it into his dimensional storage. A smile crossed his face as the next notification appeared.
Bloodline Awakened: Blood of the Unchained.
A bloodline forged in defiance of control, the Blood of the Unchained grants its bearers the ability to break free from all forms of restraint, both physical and mental. The more their freedom is threatened, the more savage and powerful they become.
So that''s how I gained that strength, Jason murmured. Memories flickered¡ªhis first-grade teacher scolding him for his defiance, his bosses growing frustrated with his inability to blindly follow orders. It had always been there, lurking beneath the surface. He wasn¡¯t just stubborn.
This power... it wasn¡¯t just there, waiting. It had always been inside me, pushing against every rule, every chain. And now, I finally understand why.
Jason could feel it, the raw energy of his bloodline coursing through his veins. His heart pounded, his muscles feeling more responsive than ever, his senses sharpened. Though the intensity had dimmed since the fight, it still lingered just beneath the surface, ready to unleash itself again when needed.
Another notification blinked into existence.
Skill Unlocked: Firestorm
Born from the eternal flames of the Ember Peak Forge, Firestorm allows the wielder to summon searing waves of heat and fire through direct contact. The very essence of the forge courses through their body, enabling them to unleash flames so intense they warp the air itself. Skill activated through touch.
Jason smirked. "Looks like our dead friend left us some parting gifts."
Opening the last notification trumpets blared in Victory.
Quest Update: Defeat the Three Bosses of the Triumverge Citadel.
Umbraxis, the Shrouded Betrayer has been slain. Bosses remaining: 2 of 3. Days remaining 65 of 90
Jason turned toward Maggy, a grin spreading across his face. ¡°Hey, I got you something I think you¡¯ll want.¡±
Maggy raised an eyebrow as Jason handed her the Essence of the Dread Lord. She eyed the swirling liquid with suspicion. ¡°I¡¯m not drinking that.¡±
Jason chuckled. ¡°Good call. Pretty sure that¡¯d turn you into some kind of undead nightmare.¡± He kicked the pile of ash that had once been Umbraxis. ¡°But I think it can enhance one of your skills.¡±
Maggy hesitated, her fingers tightening around the vial. ¡°Enhance how?¡±
Jason shrugged. ¡°You tell me. I don¡¯t have spirit magic, but I figured it might boost something important.¡±
A notification flickered in her vision, offering a choice. She glanced up at Jason. ¡°It¡¯s letting me pick which skill to enhance. Spirit Bolt, Spirit Stitch, my aura¡ or Sacred Sanctuary.¡±
Jason crossed his arms. ¡°Spirit Bolt¡¯s already a powerhouse. Stitch keeps me alive, but it¡¯s solid as is. Aura? We¡¯d have to gamble on what it¡¯d evolve into.¡± He met her eyes. ¡°I trust your gut. What¡¯s it telling you?¡±
Maggy stared at the vial, heart pounding. Her mind replayed their fights¡ªthe near-deaths, the frantic escapes, the moments she barely made a difference.
She wasn¡¯t enough.
Not yet.
A pulse of energy rippled through the vial, almost as if responding to her hesitation. She swallowed hard.
Then, she made her choice.
A rush of power surged through her, and the notification appeared:
Spirit Sanctum (Evolved from Sacred Sanctuary)
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
A rift to the Spirit Warden¡¯s soul manifests, creating a sanctuary where allies can recover. Spirit-based skills are amplified, and the body and soul rejuvenate at an accelerated rate. The sanctum reflects the wielder¡¯s resolve, growing stronger as their will deepens.
Jason watched as the aura around her subtly shifted, becoming something more refined, more potent. Maggy exhaled, stunned.
¡°I think¡¡± she breathed, ¡°this is going to be even more useful than we thought.¡±
Jason grinned, rolling his shoulders. ¡°See? Told you your gut was worth trusting. And if you don''t mind I could use some healing my body aches something fierce.¡±
Maggy approached him, but as she got closer, her smile faltered. Her eyes widened in horror as she noticed hundreds of tiny, jagged tears crisscrossing Jason¡¯s skin, like barely-healed scars shimmering faintly in the low light. The wounds were small but unmistakably deep, as though they didn¡¯t belong to his physical body at all.
¡°What... how did this happen?¡± Maggy whispered, her voice tight with concern. She reached out, her fingertips lightly grazing his arm, and without thinking, she cast Spirit Stitch. Her magic flowed into him, and the bruising from the battle with Umbraxis faded instantly. But the tiny, ethereal tears remained, stubborn and unyielding.
Maggy¡¯s breath hitched. Her fingers trembled as she pulled away, horror flooding her veins. "Jason¡ these wounds¡ª" her voice cracked, "they aren¡¯t just on your body. They¡¯re on your soul."
Jason frowned, looking down at himself. He hadn¡¯t even noticed the strange marks before, but now that Maggy pointed them out, he could feel it, the dull ache running deep inside, as though something within him was stretched too far. ¡°What the hell...?¡±
Maggy¡¯s brow furrowed as she looked at the strange tears, her mind racing. ¡°It¡¯s not from Umbraxis.¡± She shook her head. ¡°No... this is something else.¡±
Jason blinked, his eyes narrowing. ¡°You¡¯re saying it¡¯s not from the chains or that fight?¡±
Maggy shook her head, her eyes fixed on the faint, ethereal tears crisscrossing his body. ¡°No, it doesn¡¯t make sense. These aren¡¯t normal injuries. It¡¯s like... it¡¯s like your soul itself is damaged.¡±
Jason took a deep breath, trying to make sense of everything. He thought back to the battle, to the surge of raw, wild strength that had coursed through him. That overwhelming power felt so natural like it had been him accepting himself.
¡°I''m not sure how or why but That power¡ªit wasn¡¯t just there. It wasn¡¯t waiting. It was breaking free. And now, I don¡¯t know if I can hold it back.¡±
Maggy looked at him, her brow furrowing with concern. ¡°What are you talking about?¡±
Jason hesitated for a moment, then sighed. ¡°It¡¯s my bloodline.¡±
Maggy¡¯s eyes widened in surprise. ¡°Your bloodline? What do you mean?¡±
He glanced down at his hands, flexing his fingers as if he could still feel the remnants of that primal power running through him. ¡°When I fought Umbraxis, when I thought I was going to lose you... something took over. I¡¯ve had this feeling inside me for a while now, this pressure building up, and in that fight, during the fight it broke free. It¡¯s called the Blood of the Unchained.¡±
Maggy¡¯s confusion deepened as she listened. ¡°Unchained?¡±
Jason nodded, his expression grim. ¡°It¡¯s a bloodline i dont know. Some power, something deep inside me that I didn¡¯t even know I had. I started to think something was odd after the first Harrower then after the Harbinger I Knew something was up. When it activates, it gives me this... raw, untamed strength. But it¡¯s not just physical, I almost lost myself to it I wanted so badly to destroy the thing that bound me and threatened my something I cared about that all tactics fled my mind. Also it appears that it come at a cost.¡±
Maggy¡¯s eyes widened in horror as the realization sank in. ¡°Your bloodline is doing this to you? It¡¯s tearing your soul apart?¡±
Jason nodded slowly. ¡°It seems that way. If I had to guess not every time since this is the first time I''ve been hurt from it."
Maggy stared at him, her face pale with shock. ¡°Jason... why didn¡¯t you say something before? How long have you felt this? How long have you been hurting like this?¡±
¡°I didn¡¯t know I had it until now. I thought something was up but never expected this.¡± Jason admitted, his voice thick with frustration.
Maggy shook her head, her hand reaching out to touch one of the faint tears on his arm. ¡°This is serious. You can¡¯t keep using it if it¡¯s going to keep doing this to you. If your soul breaks, Jason...¡±
Jason clenched his jaw, his eyes hardening. ¡°I know. But we¡¯re in the middle of all this. We don¡¯t have a choice. That power... I need it. I can¡¯t afford to hold back right now, not with everything that¡¯s happening.¡±
Maggy¡¯s hand lingered on his arm, her worry evident. ¡°But you can¡¯t keep pushing yourself like this. If your soul gets torn apart...¡± her voice cracking.
¡°I¡¯ll figure it out,¡± Jason said. ¡°I have to. But right now, I... We need that strength. I¡¯ll be careful, I just need to learn how to just barley tap into it."
Maggy looked at him, her eyes filled with concern. ¡°Jason...¡±
"I¡¯ll be careful," Jason said, though even as the words left his mouth, he wasn''t sure he believed them. He needed the power. But at what cost? He swallowed the doubt and forced a grin. "One way or another, we¡¯ll figure this out."
Maggy nodded slowly, though the fear didn¡¯t leave her eyes. ¡°Just... promise me you won¡¯t let it go too far.¡±
Jason met her gaze, the tension between them thick. ¡°I won¡¯t. But I can¡¯t let this power go, not now. Not when we need it.¡±
Maggy stepped back, her hand dropping from his arm. She didn¡¯t say anything, but the worry in her eyes spoke volumes. Jason knew he was playing with fire pushing himself too far. But deep down, he also knew there was no other option. He needed the power of his bloodline to survive what was coming. Even if it came with a terrible price.
¡°Maybe my new skill can help heal those wounds even a little.¡± As she finished she cast the new skill.
As Maggy activated the skill, the world around them rippled. A low hum resonated through the air, a vibration that wasn¡¯t heard, but felt deep within the soul. Then, with a soft pulse, the sanctum bloomed into existence.
Jason stepped forward, and the world around him transformed.
The Spirit Sanctum was vast¡ªan ethereal expanse bathed in a soft, radiant glow. The ground beneath them shimmered like polished glass, reflecting the golden sky above. A warm breeze carried the faint scent of something ancient, like the air before a storm yet untouched by rain.
Towering trees with silver leaves stood in the distance, their branches stretching toward the light. Soft wisps of spirit energy drifted lazily through the air, whispering like distant echoes of lost memories. It was beautiful. Tranquil.
But then, Jason saw it.
A faint shadow at the far edge of the sanctum.
It was subtle, like an approaching storm, but the more he focused on it, the more apparent it became. The golden glow dimmed the closer it got to the horizon, where wisps of black mist curled and flickered, as if waiting for a moment of weakness.
The contrast was striking.
The light was strong, overwhelming, yet it did not erase the darkness entirely. Instead, the two forces coexisted, locked in silent tension. A reflection of Maggy herself.
Jason turned to her, but Maggy was already looking toward the shadowed horizon.
"So this is your spirit realm?" Jason asked, his voice low.
Maggy nodded, ringing her hands. "Yes. It''s me. All of me."
The Spirit Sanctum was a sanctuary, but it was also a battlefield¡ªa place of recovery, but also a reflection of her struggles. The light pushed back the darkness, but the shadows lingered, whispering at the edges, waiting.
Jason clenched his fists. He understood now. This place wasn¡¯t just for healing. It was a representation of Maggy''s growth, a promise that she would never let the darkness consume her again.
And standing within it, Jason felt¡ lighter. The strange spiritual wounds across his body ached less, the tension in his soul unwinding as the sanctum¡¯s warmth washed over him.
Maggy turned to him, a small, knowing smile on her lips. "Told you it¡¯d be more useful than we thought."
"Jason let out a slow breath, the weight in his chest easing¡ªbut not disappearing. He looked at Maggy, then at the sanctum around them. The light pushed back the darkness, but the darkness never left.
Neither did his.
Maybe that was the truth of power. It wasn¡¯t about winning or losing against the void inside them. It was about learning to stand in the balance.
And as long as they stood together, the darkness would never have them.
Chapter Thirteen. The thrill of the Hunt.
Euphoria rushed through the Reaver as the screams finally died down, fading into the stillness of the night. It had been ages since he had felt the thrill of true prey, the kind that could challenge him. But this¡ this was different. The thrill was sharper, more intoxicating. A grin split his face, blood still dripping from his hands. To his delight, a surge of power rippled through him; his class, Bloodbound Reaper, had evolved with the kill of a fellow Forerunner.
A low, satisfied laugh escaped his lips. This¡ this was true ecstasy.
The hunt had been more satisfying than any in recent memory, not just for the challenge but for the look in his prey¡¯s eyes, the moment when hope left him. The Reaver could still see it: the old man¡¯s defiance crumbling as realization set in, as he grasped the futility of his resistance. The Reaver relished it, savoring the fear, the resignation. He lived for that fleeting moment when the strongest-willed finally understood they were doomed.
And if the Reaver was being honest with himself, the old man would have killed him¡ªshould have killed him¡ªif he had only known what he was truly facing.
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it.
But that was the beauty of the hunt, wasn¡¯t it? The thrill of being on the edge, that one wrong move could be the end.
This kill was different. The familiar thrill of the hunt was there, but this time, it came with something more¡ªpower. He felt it surge through his veins, the essence of his fallen prey feeding him, sharpening him. And with it, a greater hunt had begun.
He looked down at the remains of the Forerunner, his grin widening. The lifeless eyes stared back at him, empty now, devoid of the fight that had burned within them only moments ago.
¡°Thank you for the gift.¡±
With a slow, deliberate motion, the Reaver wiped the blood from his blade, letting it drip onto the snow-covered ground. The crimson pooled beneath his feet, a stark contrast to the pale frost.
He stepped away, senses sharp, already thinking of the next hunt. The next Forerunner. The next taste of power.
This was his purpose. His reason for existing.
The wind howled through the ice-covered peaks, carrying the scent of fresh blood far into the night.
These Games truly were a gift. The next hunt awaited¡ªand this time, he would make it last.

Chapter Sixteen
Staring at the fallen remains of the Molten Goliath Jason called out.
"Consume."
Energy already harvested no items to be collected.
Well, that''s new.
Devourer Evolution Initiated
The blade stirs with newfound hunger. To evolve, it must be fed¡ªthe life force of the living fuels its growth. The more it consumes, the more it will become.
Jason thought over the implications of the notification as he and Maggy neared the castle, the oppressive heat from the volcanic landscape seemed to intensify, the air thick with ash and the distant rumble of lava flows filling the heavy silence. The castle loomed ahead, a dark, hulking structure that stood defiant amidst the sea of molten rock. Its blackened stone walls glistened in the glow of the surrounding lava, casting eerie shadows that danced across the jagged landscape.
Massive spires jutted into the sky, their tips glowing faintly with a deep crimson hue, as if the very heat of the earth had been absorbed into the stone. Rivers of lava flanked the path leading to the gates, molten streams bubbling and flowing like the lifeblood of the castle itself. The ground beneath their feet was uneven, cracked from years of volcanic activity, and it seemed as though the earth itself was alive, shifting beneath the intense heat.
The gates of the castle loomed large ahead of them, wrought from dark iron and covered in scorch marks. The metal was twisted, as if it had been warped by intense heat over time, and intricate engravings lined its surface, symbols that pulsed faintly with an ominous red glow. Lava flowed down from the castle¡¯s upper levels, forming molten waterfalls that cascaded over the gate¡¯s edges, pooling into the fiery moat below.
The air was thick with the scent of sulfur, and the ground trembled slightly with every step they took. From where they stood, they could feel the immense power radiating from within the castle, a heat so intense it felt almost alive. Despite the fortress¡¯s apparent abandonment, a sense of danger clung to the air, as though the castle itself was waiting for their arrival.
Jason stopped for a moment, wiping the sweat from his brow as he surveyed the structure. ¡°This place looks like it¡¯s been through hell¡¡±
Maggy nodded, her eyes fixed on the twisted gates.
With the castle looming ahead and the path behind them disappearing into the volcanic expanse, Jason and Maggy took their final steps toward the massive gate.
The massive gates groaned open with a challenging, ominous creak, revealing the figure that awaited them inside. Emerging from the fiery glow within the castle walls was a hulking giant, easily twice the height of any man, its body encased in armor crafted from molten rock. The blackened, jagged plates pulsed with the glow of magma coursing through the cracks between them, as if the armor itself was alive with volcanic fury.
The giant carried a shield almost as large as the iron doors themselves, its surface glowing with molten veins. It was a slab of raw, molten rock that seemed impossibly heavy, yet the giant held it with ease, using it to block the way as if daring Jason and Maggy to step forward.
But it wasn¡¯t the shield that drew their gaze, it was the sword.
The massive blade in the giant¡¯s hand flowed with lava, as if the weapon had been forged in the heart of a volcano and never cooled. With each movement, molten liquid dripped from the sword, sizzling as it hit the ground. When the giant shifted, the lava on the blade sprayed outward in arcs of fiery liquid, scorching the blackened earth beneath its feet. The heat radiating from the weapon alone was intense enough to make Jason and Maggy step back instinctively.
The giant¡¯s molten eyes locked onto them, burning with a primal rage, as if it was born of the very lava that surrounded them. It let out a low, rumbling growl, the ground beneath them trembling in response. With each step it took, the earth cracked and hissed, small bursts of flame erupting from the ground where its feet landed.
Jason gritted his teeth, as the giant moved closer, the heat of its presence already unbearable. ¡°Well, that¡¯s doesn''t look very nice,¡± he muttered, eyeing the giant¡¯s sword warily. ¡°We might want to stay clear of that thing.¡±
Maggy swallowed, her gaze fixed on the giant as it approached, its molten sword spraying lava with every movement. ¡°Yeah¡ I don¡¯t think we¡¯ll survive a direct hit.¡±
The giant raised its shield, its molten eyes blazing as it prepared to charge.
Molten Titan Grade F
A guardian born from the heart of a volcano. Its molten armor grants near-impenetrable defense, while its lava sword delivers devastating attacks. The shield it wields can absorb elemental magic, reflecting fire-based spells back at its opponent.
Jason¡¯s heart sank. ¡°That things can reflect fire-based magic.¡±
Maggy smirked. ¡°So¡ don¡¯t use fire.¡±
Rolling his eyes with a smile forming at his lips. Jason summoned the Devourer. ¡°Well, it looks like I get to start working on leveling you up. just leave my mind alone would ya.¡±
The Molten Titan''s molten veins pulsed brighter, as if responding to their presence. The air warped with the sheer heat rolling off its body, waves of suffocating pressure forcing Jason and Maggy to step back instinctively. Then, with a bone-rattling roar, it moved.
It wasn¡¯t slow. It exploded forward, molten footsteps sending fountains of lava surging from the ground. Jason barely had time to react before the colossal sword came crashing down, a pillar of molten fury.
Jason reacted quickly, using Flash Step to dart out of range, the heat from the molten sword searing the hairs on his arm as he narrowly avoided the devastating blow. The Titan¡¯s massive blade slammed into the ground, molten lava spraying in every direction. Maggy, quick on her feet, ducked behind a nearby boulder, using it for cover as the liquid fire splattered across the scorched earth.
Jason, already moving, used another Flash Step to close the distance, aiming for a gap in the Titan¡¯s molten armor. But before he could strike, a massive wall of rock and fire came crashing into him. The Titan had swung its massive shield with blinding speed, Jason twisted at the last second, but the shield still slammed into his ribs. A sickening crack. His body rag dolled across the battlefield, skidding through the volcanic ash.
¡°Holy hell,¡± Jason muttered through gritted teeth, wiping blood from his mouth. ¡°That thing is a monster. Even with me anticipating that it you still messed me up.¡±
¡°Jason, are you okay?¡± Maggy called out, her voice tight with concern as she peeked out from behind her cover.
Jason grinned through the pain, trying to shake off the daze. Dancing out of range of the Titan¡¯s next attack, he gave Maggy a thumbs up, though he winced as he moved. ¡°Still alive! But this thing¡¯s not playing around. Make sure you stay out of its range.¡±
The Molten Titan roared, its molten sword spraying more lava as it readied its next strike. Jason could feel the heat intensifying, his body aching from the impact.
The Molten Titan charged at Jason again, its massive molten sword slashing through the air, striking the ground where Jason had stood just moments before. Jason blurred between the Titan¡¯s attacks, his form flickering like a shadow against the fire-lit battlefield, barely leaving the Titan any time to adjust. Each step was faster, more fluid, and now, with his core pushing the mid 50''s, the maneuver barely strained him at all. The ease with which he moved filled him with a sense of control. Even still the hulking Titan was learning adapting and predicting. The Titian roared in victory as it stomped with enough force that causing Jason to lose his footing not able to step down to activate flash step. Its colossal sword was descending faster than Jason could regain his footing.
A sharp crack of energy surged through the air as another Spirit Bolt struck the Titan in the face, stunning it momentarily. Giving Jason enough time to reset and get out of the way. The Titians frustration grew, and it gave up on its relentless charge at Jason, the Titan¡¯s molten eyes turned, locking onto Maggy. With a furious growl, it changed targets.

¡°No!¡± Jason¡¯s mind raced as the Titan charged at Maggy. Its massive shield crashing through the boulder Maggy was hiding behind. Jason watched in horror as Maggy flew through the air. The massive blade was tracking Maggy and as her body hit the ground the blade quickly followed. lava erupted from the strike leaving behind a smoldering crater.
Time seemed to slow as Jason¡¯s heart pounded in his chest.
Thump, thump.
His pulse echoed in his ears, drowning out everything but the sight of the Titan attacking someone he cared about. Rage surged through him, hot and primal, boiling up from the depths of his being.
¡°How dare this thing attack her,¡± Jason thought, his vision narrowing, his body tensing with fury. ¡°How dare it take her from me¡ How dare it.¡±
as he yelled those words an inner voice spoke. Calm Jason don''t let it control you.
The world around him blurred as Jason focused on the Titan. His rage fueled him, sharpening his senses, turning his focus into a single, burning desire to destroy the creature.
the same voice echoed to him "The bloodline is a source of power, be its master don''t let it be yours."
the words had a calming effect on his mind the power pulsed through him. the difference this time is Jason''s mind was still his.
With a crack, the earth beneath his feet shattered as Jason activated Flash Step once more. But this time, something was different. His bloodline made the movement more explosive, more powerful. The ground itself seemed to crumble in his wake, as though it couldn¡¯t handle the force of his speed.
Jason appeared in front of the Molten Titan in an instant, his eyes blazing with unbridled fury. Without hesitation, he swung The Devourer, and the bone blade bit deep into the Titan¡¯s molten armor, cracking the surface and sending molten rock spraying into the air. The Titan howled in rage, its molten eyes now fixed solely on Jason, consumed by fury at the damage inflicted on it.
Jason grunted as the ethereal tears began to appear. I need to contain this, can¡¯t afford to let my soul be torn apart.
The Titan swung its massive sword, lava trailing from its blade in an arc, but Jason was faster. He vanished, he darted away just as the molten sword cleaved the ground where he had stood. Before the Titan could recover, Jason reappeared at its flank, The Devourer slashing through another gap in its armor. His speed was relentless, his form a blur as he flashed around the battlefield, each movement too fast for the Titan to track.
Again and again, Jason drove The Devourer into the exposed joints of the Molten Titan. Each strike bit deeper, carving through the molten rock and breaking its defenses. A large chunk of its chest plate shattered and fell to the ground, exposing the glowing core beneath.
I need to end this.
Enraged, the Molten Titan roared, its massive form trembling with fury. It changed its strategy, swinging its molten sword in wide arcs. With every swing, the blade launched waves of lava, filling the battlefield with molten magma, threatening to trap Jason in a sea of burning rock. The heat intensified, and the ground beneath them cracked and hissed as the lava spread, turning the area into a molten deathtrap.
Jason¡¯s speed was too much. His eyes burned with determination, his body moving in a blur of motion. Just a little more. With a surge of power, he used Flash Step again, dodging the molten waves. The battlefield was a chaotic swirl of fire and heat, but Jason danced through it, keeping a step ahead.
Jason felt his muscles scream as he pushed himself further, each Flash Step tearing at the edges of his endurance. The Titan was faltering, but it wasn¡¯t done. Its molten core swelled, veins of lava glowing brighter as the air grew impossibly hot. The battlefield trembled beneath Jason¡¯s feet.
It¡¯s about to explode.
Jason barely had a second to react as the Titan dug its shield into the ground, cracking the battlefield apart. The heat spiked, a vortex of molten energy spiraling upward, threatening to swallow everything in its path.
Now or never.
With one final push, Jason blurred forward, appearing inside the Titan¡¯s guard.
The Devourer sank into its core¡ªbut something was wrong. The blade trembled violently in his grasp, the Titan¡¯s boiling essence fighting back.
Jason''s vision blurred, as The Devourer drank deep¡ªtoo deep. His body convulsed as raw, volcanic energy flooded into the blade then into him, threatening to burn him alive from the inside out.
Too much¡ªit''s drinking too fast!
A sharp pain split his skull, his body locking up. If he didn¡¯t stop this, he wouldn¡¯t walk away from this fight.
His fingers tightened around the hilt, and with every last ounce of willpower, he ripped The Devourer free.
Jason stood over the fallen Titan, The Devourer pulsed in Jason¡¯s hands. The energy from the Titan surged through it¡ªthrough him¡ªburning, tearing, consuming.
His vision darkened. The world blurred.
More.
The blade whispered, its hunger seeping into his bones.
Jason gritted his teeth, veins bulging in his arms. Something deep inside him pushed against the Devourer.
With a final, defiant growl, he ripped the blade free, staggering as the energy whiplashed through him. The Devourer pulsed in his grip, as if displeased. As if it hadn¡¯t had its fill.
The voice that had calmed him whispered. "Well done."
Jason turned looking for the voice that had guided him. there was no one.
His mind finally cleared.
Maggy.
His thoughts raced back to the moment the Titan had attacked her, the molten sword crashing down where she had landed. He hadn¡¯t seen her since. His breath caught in his throat, and without a second thought, he broke into a run, sprinting toward the place he had last seen her.
¡°Maggy!¡± Jason shouted, his voice hoarse, his eyes scanning the scorched battlefield for any sign of her.
His heart pounded harder with every step. The area where the Titan had struck was a mess of charred earth and molten debris. Jason¡¯s eyes darted frantically over the blackened ground, the heat still radiating from the stone. His worst fear gripped him as his gaze fell on something lying amidst the burnt remains.
A cloak, charred, torn, and blackened.
Jason¡¯s breath hitched.
His fingers brushed against the tattered remnants of Maggy¡¯s cloak, the edges charred and crumbling in his grasp. His heart pounded in his ears, drowning out everything but the awful, suffocating silence that had settled over the battlefield.
No... no, this isn¡¯t happening.
His chest tightened, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He scanned the battlefield again, refusing to believe what his eyes were telling him. The heat from the molten battlefield still rose in shimmering waves, distorting his vision. Maybe she¡¯s just beyond the crater. Maybe she¡¯s already up ahead.
But no matter how much he tried to rationalize it, no matter how many desperate excuses his mind scrambled to conjure, the truth sat heavy in his gut, cold and unrelenting. He saw the blade hit her.
His knees hit the ground before he realized he had collapsed, his hand clutching the fabric like it was the last thing anchoring him to reality.
"Maggy..."
His voice was barely a whisper, cracking under the weight of the realization pressing down on him. His fingers curled tighter around the cloak, his entire body trembling. The world blurred as hot tears welled up, spilling down his face, but he didn¡¯t care. The battlefield, the fight, the castle¡ªall of it meant nothing in this moment.
She was gone.
A choking sob forced its way up his throat. His chest heaved, a raw, broken noise escaping his lips. The memory of her smile, her laughter, the way she always had his back¡ªall of it slammed into him like a tidal wave, threatening to drown him in grief and regret.
"I should have¡ª" His voice cracked.
He clenched his teeth, guilt festering like an open wound. He should have been faster. Should have protected her better. Should have¡ª
A slow, rhythmic tapping echoed through the smoldering ruins. Like a child idly drumming their fingers against a table.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Jason turned sharply, his heart still hammering in his chest.
She was sitting there. Perched atop the Titan¡¯s molten remains, her legs swinging idly. Her horns glowed faintly in the dying firelight, her eyes gleaming with the soft, flickering embers of something far too amused.
¡°You really are dramatic, aren¡¯t you?¡±
Jason whirled. A small figure sat atop the remains of the Titan¡¯s molten core, her legs swinging lazily. Her horns caught the dim glow of the lava, her eyes gleaming like embers. She trailed a single finger through the dust, humming softly, as if she had been there all along. The hope that had surged so violently in his chest crumbled the moment his eyes landed on her.
"You know¡ I really liked that one. You could¡¯ve at least let it last a little longer," the girl mused, kicking at the smoldering remains of the Molten Titan.
Jason¡¯s grip tightened around the cloak, his mind reeling from the sudden shift in reality. Jason muttered a response. ¡°It... it was the gatekeeper to the castle. We... we had to defeat it to gain access.¡±
The girl tilted her head to the side, an expression of innocent confusion crossing her face. ¡°What do you mean, ¡®we¡¯? It¡¯s just you. She went out just like that." snapping her fingers. "One moment here¡ then gone. Kinda poetic, don¡¯t you think?¡±
Those words struck Jason like a hammer, threatening to shatter him all over again. His hands tightened around the cloak as the pain began to swell once more. But in that moment, a soft light pulsed within him, Blessing of the Forgiven, its warmth washing over him.
¡°She¡¯s not gone... She can¡¯t be...¡± Jason murmured, his voice steadier than before, though the pain still lingered in every word.
The girl¡¯s expression didn¡¯t change. She blinked at him, almost curious. ¡°There are no other living creatures here, other than you and me. I would sense them if there were.¡± Her gaze drifted back to the fallen Titan, her tone casual, almost playful. ¡°And that thing? It wasn¡¯t the gatekeeper. It was just a toy I made.¡±
Jason¡¯s mind reeled. ¡°A toy...?¡±
The girl nodded, as if explaining something obvious. ¡°I am the one who protects the walls of the castle,¡± she said, a small smile playing on her lips. ¡°The Titan was just something to pass the time.¡±
Jason stared at her, trying to process everything. His heart was still heavy with the thought of Maggy, but now, confusion and a rising sense of unease mixed with his grief. This girl, this strange child, was the true gatekeeper?
¡°What... what are you?¡± Jason asked, his voice low, his grip tightening on the cloak.
The girl giggled softly, her horns glinting in the fiery light. ¡°Oh, I¡¯m many things,¡± she replied cryptically, her smile widening. ¡°But for now, I¡¯m the one you have to face if you want to get past these walls.¡±
Jason Identified her.
Isabella, Commander of the Hordes of Pyraxis, Grade E.
His breath stilled. Grade E? His exhausted body tensed instinctively, every muscle screaming that this girl¡ªthis seemingly harmless child¡ªwas more dangerous than anything he had faced so far.
Isabella smirked.
Chapter Seventeen
¡°This pitiful creature dared to call itself the King of this frozen wasteland,¡± the Reaver muttered, his voice dripping with disgust as he gazed at the severed head in his hand. The so-called gatekeeper¡¯s expression was frozen in defiance, even in death.
He scoffed, tossing the head aside with disdain. It had tried to freeze him, over and over again, repeating the same pathetic attacks. Each attempt was met with the Reaver¡¯s effortless counter, each strike more futile than the last. ¡°Pathetic,¡± he spat. ¡°Hardly worth the hunt.¡±
Yet despite its frailty, the creature had met death with defiance. Even in its final moments, the beast resisted, its last expression locked in silent rebellion. A wasted effort.

But as much as the creature¡¯s lack of fear annoyed him, it was the boredom that gnawed at him most. The fight had been monotonous, its tactics predictable, its demise inevitable. He had wanted a real challenge, something to test his growing power.
As if answering his unspoken demand, a portal ignited before him, stark and oppressive, a searing contrast to the icy wasteland behind him. Waves of heat shimmered through the air, the scent of molten rock choking out the last traces of frost.
A slow grin spread across his face. ¡°Hopefully this area will be a little more entertaining,¡± the Reaver mused, his eyes gleaming with dark anticipation. His blood sang for a worthy hunt, something that would reignite the thrill he so desperately craved.

Chapter Twenty-Six, The Reaver
Frustration, anger, and anticipation. He could not decide which he felt more. He had been handed three perfect things to hunt on a silver platter. It was almost enough to make him grateful.
Almost.
His frustration stemmed from the fact that Jason was stronger than him. He couldn''t bleed him, couldn''t watch the hope drain from his eyes. If Jason was awake, there would be no chance. Ending him in his sleep was the only option. But was that satisfying enough? Would it be enough to snuff out the thrill clawing at his veins?
The others would have to do for now.
Time dragged as the others talked over the fire, voices low, flickering in and out of his awareness, adding to the conversation when he''d deem it necessary. He never understood why people pretended to care about one another, he had learned however. If he played his part, nodding, smiling his practiced smile, and laughing when expected, those around him would drop there guard, and let him close to them. He knew the truth however¡ªwhen push came to shove, so-called loved ones would always abandon you to save themselves. The weak clung to each other for comfort, for survival, but in the end, everyone was alone.

He licked his lips, fingers twitching at his sides. The flames cast long shadows across their faces as they drifted into sleep. One by one, they faded into vulnerability.
Jason was the last to rest.
The Reaver rose silently, stepping forward. His pulse quickened as he loomed over Jason, the flickering firelight dancing across his face. One strike. That was all it would take. A quick, clean kill.
His breath came slow and measured. His muscles tensed.
Then, Jason shifted slightly in his sleep.
The Reaver froze. Even unconscious, Jason carried a presence, a pressure that pushed against the air itself. His fingers twitched toward his weapon, but something inside him whispered: Not yet. He might still be needed.
He gritted his teeth and exhaled silently, stepping backward into the shadows. Not tonight.
But soon.
