《HARD LOCKED: A LitRPG Adventure》 Prologue Prologue The day that changed William¡¯s life started like every other day, laying on his medical bed unmoving with a sexually abusive nurse hovering over him. He had been in this bed ever since his squad''s helicopter crashed and he had lost all movement in his body. William¡¯s locked-in syndrome wasn¡¯t a common diagnosis and his doctors had thought he was in a coma until his sister had noticed that he was responding to their movements in the stateside hospital in Virginia. Now he slept, ate, and surfed the internet all from the comfort of his medical grade bed in rural Idaho, a long way from his time in the Marines, and any semblance of dignity. It wasn¡¯t until a particular message came across his screen that morning that he actually woke up from default mode. Hey Bro, soooo my work is pretty mad at me. Do you have time to chat? (I have literally nothing but time.) (Previous Text Deleted) Sure, what¡¯s up? So, you know how I got that set up for you so you could type with your CT waves and Actually talk but I had to bribe that surgeon to Get it done? Yea, vaguely Yeah, that gear was a prototype and I wasn¡¯t strictly allowed to do that This is my only way to communicate that doesn¡¯t involve Mrs. Pedo They want it back but I was able to convince them This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. That it was integrated, and ripping it out will kill you Also, some reps will be stopping by tomorrow to Interview you. *Great*!!! So they are placating you And are just coming to get their STOLEN property NOOO, they are coming over to see if your a good candidate for implementation im sending you a file. Just sign it and you¡¯ll be fine (Kami_Technologies_NDA.pdf) I have to go, I love you Big Bro! ?? Love <3 you too William closed the chat window and sent a message to his mother in the other room. She buzzed in on the intercom that was on his nightstand, ¡°Ok, do you know when your sister¡¯s coworkers will be here?¡± "Tomorrow," William responded using the specialized device that allowed him to communicate through his brain waves. The device had been a lifeline, the only connection he had to the outside world since his body had failed him. His family had rallied around him, doing their best to provide care and keep him engaged, but the constant struggle with his condition had taken a toll on everyone. His mother''s voice carried a mixture of concern and hope as she replied, "Alright, we''ll make sure everything is ready for their visit. Hopefully, this could be a chance for something positive, Will." William sighed mentally. He understood that his sister was just trying to help, but he couldn''t shake the feeling that this visit was more than just another intrusion into his already limited life. He glanced at the file that his sister had sent him¡ªthe NDA from Kami Technologies, a subsidiary of the software development firm ZefraTech Inc. It was a formality, he assumed, but it also meant that his world could change again. His thoughts drifted to the message from his sister. The prototype device that allowed him to communicate was unique, a piece of technology that had provided him with a semblance of agency in a world that had seemed increasingly out of reach. If Kami Technologies wanted it back, it was a decision he didn''t want to make. But then again, what choice did he have? As the afternoon sun filtered through his window, casting a warm glow on his bed, William pondered the potential of the interview. He had heard of Kami Technologies and their advancements in virtual reality technology, mostly from his sister in what she could share of her work with Dr. Kami. He was a recluse genius with a mind for pulling random bits of science into extraordinary breakthroughs in medical technology. The first time he changed the world with brain computer interfaces for cybernetic body parts, that had garnered him a Nobel Prize in Medicine. The second time, he was politely asked to retire, after a failed human trial of his latest experiment resulted in the death of his daughter. If there was a chance that their technology could grant him even a fraction of his former mobility and freedom, it was worth considering, risks be damned. With a mixture of apprehension and curiosity, he opened the NDA file and scrolled through the legal jargon. It was a contract that outlined the terms and conditions of becoming a participant in a groundbreaking virtual reality experiment. He scanned the document, the words blurring together as his mind wrestled with the decision before him. The screen blinked as he reached the bottom of the document, prompting him to confirm his agreement with an electronic signature. He hesitated for a moment, his mind racing with the implications. Signing this contract meant a leap into the unknown, a departure from the only reality he had known for years. After a deep breath, he maneuvered the cursor and clicked the "Accept" button. A sense of both anxiety and excitement washed over him, his heart pounding in his chest as he realized that he had taken a step toward a potential transformation. A potential to transition...finally. Chapter 1 -The Day Everything Changed Chapter 1 The Day Everything Changed OPERATION IRON TALON Location: Classified Combat Zone Date: October 17, 2061 Callsign: Viper-Two The rhythmic thrum of rotor blades filled the cockpit, a familiar sound that had become the heartbeat of Lt. William Alexander¡¯s life. It wasn¡¯t just noise; it was control, certainty¡ªa mechanical symphony that drowned out the chaos of war. He was never the best pilot but never the worst. He skated in the middle of the pack. His hands rested steady on the stick, fingers adjusting with instinct and training rather than thought. The dim glow of HUD readouts flickered across his visor, displaying altitude, velocity, and the vital statistics of the CH-77 Wraith gunship. The air was thick with tension, the kind that made a man hyper-aware of every movement, every breath. His co-pilot, Lieutenant Jackson, shot him a glance. There had been an uneasy tension between them eversense Jackson had found a few bras and other female accouterments in his bunk. He had never told anyone he was transgender, not that anyone would be able to tell. The reinstatement of Don¡¯t Ask, Don¡¯t Tell had quashed any chance at transition while in the military. He was going to do his duty, finish his tour and go home. Then it would be time to figure out how to become who SHE really was. A voice from the radio shook William out of his thoughts, ¡°Viper-Two, we¡¯re three clicks from the LZ. Signal¡¯s hot. Orders are to drop the package and provide overwatch.¡± ¡°Roger that, Viper-Actual,¡± William replied, voice steady despite the static crackle of comms. ¡°Stay sharp, Jackson. This isn¡¯t a milk run.¡± Their mission was simple on paper¡ªescort a quick-response unit into enemy territory, provide air support, and extract. But simplicity was a lie in combat zones like this. Their target was a high-value insurgent leader holed up in a fortified compound deep in the jungle. The kind of op where things always went sideways. A warning light blinked red¡ªmissile lock. ¡°Shit,¡± Lt. Jackson muttered, hands moving fast over controls. ¡°They got eyes on us.¡± William¡¯s gut clenched. He twisted the stick, banking hard left just as the first missile streaked past, its smoke trail cutting through the darkened sky like a scar. Another lock alarm blared, and this time, the launch was dead on. ¡°Chaff! Chaff! Chaff!¡± William ordered Jackson. ¡°Hang on! It won¡¯t engage!¡± The impact hit them like a sledgehammer. The right engine erupted in flames, sending the Wraith into a violent spin. William fought the controls, trying to stabilize, but gravity had other plans. Alarms screamed, metal groaned, and the jungle rushed up to meet them. ¡°Mayday, mayday¡ªViper-Two going down¡ª¡± The world turned into fire and fury.
William¡¯s consciousness swam up through layers of darkness. He felt the phantom sensation of movement, of breathlessness, of pain¡ªbut when he finally opened his eyes, he realized he wasn¡¯t in the cockpit. It took him a moment to realize where he was, that moment between dreams and reality, where his body was producing adrenaline and cortisol to get him moving quickly. But William couldn¡¯t move, couldn¡¯t burn off the adrenaline¡ªhe could only attempt to quiet his body down. His live-in caregiver, the one his mother had hired, lived in his old room. He was stuck in the storage room they had converted into a long-term care space. It might as well have been a 9 by 13 prison cell for how much he actually needed. This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it. His body, once a finely tuned machine, had atrophied to near nothing. He could feel the weight of his limbs, the pressure of the sheets covering him, the stale stagnant air in his room choking him. His breath quickened, though even that felt unnatural, controlled by something else. A shadow moved in his periphery. A woman¡ªhis caregiver, Ms. Pedo he called her¡ªstood beside his bed, her dark eyes lingering on his emaciated form, "looks like someone had a little accident. Guess I''ll have to clean up after you again." She cleaned up his bed and changed his sheets then moved on to wiping his private area down a little too thoroughly, and he ejaculated. "Oops, didn''t mean for that to happen." She said in her sing-song voice, she always treated him like a child when she was like this. She commenced with licking up what was left on his thigh. He couldn''t physically vomit anymore but he would have in that moment. William had brought up his concerns with his parents using the interface his sister had gotten him to translate his speech into text to voice over the monitor. They had dismissed it as just wanting attention, his dad had said, "Well if that''s the case I should be paying her double. I''d give anything to lay about all day and have a woman handle me." There was no use attempting to call for help or using the interface to ask her to stop. She would just turn off his speakers for a day, to punish him for "ruining their good time". So he endured it. Luckily it was only twice a day. He was fairly stable as far as anything went. His day was mostly routine, Ms. Pedo''s morning handling, then he would be alone for most of the day to surf the web. He mostly would read e-books and watch old movies with his parents'' streaming service. Video games were a no go as his interface wasn''t that responsive, at most he could play ancient point and click games but those grew repetitive and boring. Today was different though, after his regular morning went by he got a rare second visit out of the caregiver. She had some clothing in her arms. Just a pair of his old sweatpants and boxers. She tugged them over his legs, "There now you''re ready for your visitors today. Can''t be having them see what''s all mine now can we." She set up a floor fan and sprayed some air freshener to get rid of the smell of the room. She left again, returning an hour later with three people, the first one a dark tan male in his mid-thirties walked in wearing a light beige 90¡¯s style business suit, the one with the three-quarter sleeves that all the hip people wore back then. The second was a woman with blonde hair and dark blue eyes. She looked like a typical right-wing news anchor woman, right down to the way she styled her hair. The last was a man he immediately recognized, Major-no now Colonel Tomas Haggarity in full dress uniform, he looked as rigid and immovable as the last time William had seen him. That had been at his bedside in Virginia when he awarded him the purple heart and silver star, then medically discharged him from the service. Why he was here with these people he didn¡¯t know. ¡°Good to see you son,¡± The colonel said, ¡°these people are here from ZefraTech and are going to be looking over the equipment your sister strategically acquired for you.¡± William chuckled internally, ¡°strategically acquired¡± was a euphemism for stolen in the service. He put his thoughts to the interface and spoke in a monotone mechanical voice ¡°WHY ARE YOU HERE, SIR?¡± The Colonel gave the monitor a glance and looked back at William, ¡°Well son the good folks at ZefraTech want to test out their new gizmo and we signed a contract with them for fallen soldiers, like yourself, to be part of their beta test when they get the damn thing working. You however are a special case, your sister is in some hot water for sure, but the higher ups at ZefraTech want to rip that equipment out of your head, or use you as their first alpha tester. They approached me as your former CO to convince you that it would be in your best interest to agree to their terms. On a personal note son, you would be doing this country, and me, one last service by agreeing. My own son is much like yourself, wheelchair bound and unable to do the things he enjoyed. What do you say son, will you be the first boots on the ground one last time?¡± William considered he had read about the Colonel¡¯s son being wheelchair bound. It seemed like the casualty rate had skyrocketed right around when his helicopter had gone down. Then the war ended and everyone moved on with their lives. This could be his chance at getting out of this, getting away from Ms. Pedo, getting out of this damn storage room, to make a difference. ¡°YES,¡± said the monitor. ¡°I knew we could count on you son. I have an ambulance service outside waiting to transport you to Boise International, from there you¡¯ll go to ZefraTech HQ in Tampa. Good Luck son, and Godspeed.¡± Chapter 2 - Arrival at ZefraTech Chapter 2 Arrival at ZefraTech The steady hum of the plane¡¯s engines filled the cabin, a soft backdrop to the tension that lingered in the air. William Alexander could barely feel the vibrations beneath him, though he knew they were there. He remained still, locked within his own body, his only movement the slow rise and fall of his chest, dictated by the machines keeping him stable. The flight had been smooth, but the weight of uncertainty pressed on him heavier than any turbulence could. He had been taken from the only home he had known since the crash, bundled into this flight with the promise of something different¡ªsomething better, they had said. He had little choice in the matter. Across from him, the man in the crisp suit leaned forward, offering a practiced smile. He was tall, lean, with sharp features and an air of professional ease that screamed corporate efficiency. "William, my name is Tim Gallagher," the man said, voice smooth, measured. "I oversee much of the development at ZefraTech, particularly the Eterna Project. I imagine you have a lot of questions." Beside him, a woman adjusted the tablet in her hands. She was younger than Tim, with blonde hair pulled into a tight bun and dark blue eyes that barely flickered from the screen as she spoke. "Rebecca Allegany," she introduced herself, glancing at William before returning to her work. "I¡¯m Tim¡¯s technical assistant. My job is to make sure this transition goes as smoothly as possible while maintaining your vitals. Think of me as part nurse and part IT gal. I have credentials in both disciplines." Transition. That word again, it meant a lot more to William than they knew. William wanted to ask what exactly that meant. What was this really about? His interface would allow him to type out basic responses, but he remained silent, waiting. Tim sat back, clasping his hands together. "I know this must be a lot to take in, but we¡¯re offering you something no one else can, William. A second chance. A way to move forward." Rebecca barely looked up as she added, "You¡¯ve been selected as the first candidate for full neural integration into Eterna. Your consciousness will be uploaded into the system. No more limitations. No more confinement. You¡¯ll be free." Free. The word held weight, but also danger. What did freedom mean when you had to give up your very body to attain it? Tim must have sensed the unspoken question. "This isn¡¯t just an experiment, William. This is a new life. And we¡¯re going to make sure it¡¯s worth it." The plane began its descent, the faint shift in pressure, the pull of the straps holding him down, that William knew well from his time as a pilot. The plane rocked as the wheels touched the tarmac and he chucked forward on his transport gurney with the straps holding his body in place. He felt the engines go full reverse and the plane began rapidly decelerating. As they rolled to a stop William saw the light of day enter the cabin from the rear as the cargo ramp was lowered. Quickly his gurney was moving across the tarmac into another ambulance. It wasn¡¯t long before they were coming to a stop again and he was unloaded once more. He felt like a piece of large luggage or a package rolling around in a FEDEX van. At last he saw a familiar face waiting for him as he was unloaded from the ambulance. Sarah was waiting patiently at the curb, her shoulder length auburn hair blowing in the warm tropical air of Tampa Bay. Certainly he felt much warmer here than in Idaho, it was mid-november and the temp back home was near thirty degrees fahrenheit. Here it was a downright balmy eighty-seven and it wasn¡¯t even mid-day yet. Sarah took Williams hand as they walked toward a large glass building, her touch steading his fraying nerves, ¡°Sorry for the abrupt haul across country but Dr. Kami believes that if we don¡¯t get this done soon the board will reconsider the whole plan. We''re going straight to the upload room.¡± ¡°What? Toshi okayed the upload without a brain scan?¡± Tim balked. He couldn¡¯t see the assistant but he heard her scoff at his sister''s words as well. ¡°He said he would explain when we get there.¡± Sarah explained. They rushed into a building labeled the Kami Technologies? Building of Advanced Research and Development. The brilliant silver letters seemed almost to gleam much more than the small label below it that looked to have been purposely neglected that read: A ZefraTech Inc.?, Company. Sarah led the way through the gleaming lobby of the Kami Technologies Building of Advanced Research and Development. The air inside was crisp and sterile, the scent of high-grade disinfectants blending with the subtle hum of unseen machinery. A few employees in white lab coats and sharply pressed business attire passed by, their hurried steps betraying the weight of their work. None of them paid any mind to the gurney carrying William. This narrative has been purloined without the author''s approval. Report any appearances on Amazon. His sister¡¯s grip on his hand remained firm, a silent assurance as they approached a set of reinforced glass doors. A scanner beeped as Sarah pressed her ID against it, granting them access to the deeper levels of the facility. Tim and Rebecca followed closely behind. Tim, ever the composed corporate man, adjusted his tie as they stepped into a private elevator. Rebecca barely glanced up from the tablet in her hands, her fingers gliding across its surface as she scanned through pages of data. The elevator descended smoothly, the walls lined with holographic displays that showcased various achievements of Kami Technologies¡ªmedical breakthroughs, quantum computing advancements, artificial intelligence innovations. William¡¯s mind whirred as he took in the imagery. He had been part of a world that ran on grit, determination, and physical might. This was a different battlefield altogether, one where the currency was knowledge and control. Rebecca finally looked up, her voice clinical. ¡°Dr. Kami is waiting in the integration lab. The procedure is set up and ready. Once we begin, we won¡¯t be stopping.¡± Sarah nodded but glanced down at William. ¡°We¡¯re doing the right thing,¡± she murmured, more to herself than to anyone else. ¡°This is your chance, Will. A real chance.¡± The elevator came to a halt with a soft chime. The doors slid open, revealing a corridor bathed in a pale blue glow. At the end of it stood Dr. Toshiro Kami himself. He had a soft welcoming smile on his lips, and was flanked by a small team of researchers. His gaze was unreadable behind the glint of his glasses, but there was no mistaking the gravity in his presence. ¡°Welcome, William,¡± Dr. Toshiro Kami said as they approached. ¡°We have much to discuss before we begin.¡± After they wheeled him into the integration lab, they hooked up different probes and electrodes to his head and torso. Dr. Kami remained at the door of the room just inside the smile still evident on his face, ¡°This process has been attempted many times, but has failed to produce an adequate result as of yet. I will not lie to you. This process is not perfected yet, but I am confident that you will be the first in a long line of people to fill our digital afterlife.¡± Williams'' eyes widened. Dr. Kami continued, ¡°Yes unfortunately this process will be one of death of the body; but your mind, your spirit will be preserved in our digital space. It is as close to immortality that we can get as humans in my opinion. Given the choice which would you rather have. A chance at a real life, albeit a digital one, or return to that cramped room wasting away waiting to die anyway.¡± Williams eyes shown with contemplation, literally his only form of expression at the moment. He looked to his sister at his side who was still holding his hand. She nodded reassuringly, he looked directly at Dr. Kami blinked as hard as he could once. Dr. Kami nodded and looked to his team, ¡°Begin.¡± William was leaned back flat and a machine much like an exposed MRI was moved forward around his head. It spiraled endlessly and William feeling a wave of nausea shut his eyes. He heard Rebecca over the whirr of the machine, ¡°Brain scan complete, instability of memory ingram at 34%, 31, 28, holding at 28%.¡± ¡°That will have to do,¡± He heard Dr. Kami say, ¡°William, I''m afraid this next part is unavoidable. In order to properly upload your mind to the network we will need what we call ¡°Hardlock¡± of a map of your neural pathways. We inject a nanite solution into your bloodstream and penetrate through the blood brain barrier. This causes tearing of that barrier and will lead to intracranial pressure. It will start as a severe headache then as the nanites attach themselves it will feel like your entire nervous system was set on fire. I don¡¯t mean to frighten you, I am just giving you warning so that you may brace yourself for what''s about to happen.¡± William felt his heart begin to beat faster and faster as a sharp sting hit his left arm. He felt something wet and cold, like ice in his veins running up his arm and into his chest. ¡°Entering subclavian artery, upper aorta, common carotid artery. Injecting nanites.¡± At first, it was just pressure¡ªlike a vice tightening around his skull. Then, the fire started. It was subtle at first, like hot needles pricking the inside of his brain, sharp and insistent. But within seconds, the sensation exploded into an unbearable inferno. It was as though molten metal had been injected directly into his veins, flowing through him with a relentless, searing heat. The pain licked at his spine, racing down his limbs in electric surges that made his muscles convulse involuntarily, though he was too paralyzed to move. William wanted to scream. His mind clawed at the edges of his consciousness, instinctively trying to flee from the agony, but there was nowhere to go. Every nerve was alive with the sensation of burning, twisting, tearing apart and reforming all at once. His vision fragmented, colors bleeding together in ways that didn¡¯t make sense, black spots blooming like ink across his sight. His body felt like it was coming apart at the seams, each individual fiber of his being unraveling and reknitting itself in an instant. His ears were filled with the deafening roar of his own pulse, hammering in a frantic rhythm against his skull, and beneath it, voices¡ªdistant, distorted, overlapping in ways that defied reality. His sister¡¯s voice, calm yet laced with fear. Dr. Kami¡¯s, clinical, unwavering. Another voice, one he couldn¡¯t quite place, whispering in a language he didn¡¯t understand. Then came the worst of it. A new, shuddering wave of pain tore through him, different from the fire¡ªit was raw, primal, an existential kind of suffering. It felt as if something fundamental was being scraped away, stripped layer by layer, like sandpaper grinding down his very soul. Memories flickered in his mind, faster than he could grasp: the scent of saltwater on a summer evening, the feeling of wind rushing through the cockpit of his helicopter, the laughter of his sister when they were children. They blurred and twisted, fracturing into countless pieces, rearranging themselves in ways that felt wrong. For a single, terrifying moment, he felt like he was losing himself. His breath¡ªwas he even breathing? His heart¡ªwas it still beating? The pain, the light, the sound¡ªit was all becoming distant, like he was sinking beneath an endless ocean. The edges of his consciousness frayed, dissolving into something vast, something unknown. And then, just when he thought he couldn¡¯t take any more¡ª Everything went dark. Silent. Still. A single thought was left as he fell into depths. Is this what it¡¯s like to die? Chapter 3 - Lets Begin Chapter 3 Let¡¯s Begin The pain was gone, the transition had been in a literal sense hell, the burning of his nerve endings as the process slowly unspooled his mind into digital data; then nothing. For a moment he had thought he had actually died and this empty luminal space of dull grays was his moment between life and what lay beyond if indeed there was an afterlife. ¡°I guess this is a form of afterlife now,¡± William said. ¡°It¡¯s funny, I had always wondered what my first interactions with one of you would be like,¡± an all encompassing female voice said in the void. ¡°Who was that?¡± ¡°Don¡¯t worry little brother,¡± the voice said, ¡°we¡¯ll have plenty of time to get to know each other, if anything I¡¯m curious as to what you do with your new opportunities.¡± the voice echoed out into the void and faded as a screen popped up in the distance.
Initializing system¡new user found¡designation Alpha_one¡ Scanning¡¡¡base memories found¡generating body based on most recent memories.
As he floated there drinking in the text on the massive screen in this space his old desiccated body formed around him and he felt ground under his feet but it felt ¨C off somehow. As if his body wasn¡¯t fully formed, fuzzy like waking up numb all over. The interface switched to a massive mirror:
Please alter any or all body characteristics to your liking. WARNING only humans can be selected as a race for the game at this time.
The mirror''s surface shimmered, and William found himself gazing at his own reflection, or at least what should have been his reflection. The image before him was indistinct, wavering as if reality itself was undecided on his form, mostly it was androgynous, clay waiting for someone to sculpt it. He raised a hand to touch the mirror''s surface, and his fingers seemed to meld with the silvery substance, sending ripples through his distorted reflection. A deep sense of disorientation washed over him as he attempted to make sense of his own appearance. His features were a swirl of colors and shapes, like an abstract painting brought to life. He could see the outline of his face, the hint of his eyes, but the details were elusive, dancing at the edges of his perception. A new voice greeted him male with a sing-song tone to it, ¡°Before we begin, may I know your name?¡±
Please choose a name. __________
He thought for a moment, this was his chance, HER chance to really redefine herself. She had always wanted to transition but the military and her accident had stifled those dreams. Now she was free, free to be the woman she had always thought herself to be in her own head. The form distorted and changed to more fit a female form but still remained a shadowy blob. She thought long and hard on what her new name should be. She had a few that she wanted to be called when she was in the real world but had never decided on which it would be. Willamina was definitely out. No need to dredge up the past. She chuckled to herself, ¡°It¡¯s an Enigma.¡±
Enigma Would you like this to be your name?
¡°As good as any other I guess? Yes.¡±
Welcome to Eterna Your Digital Afterlife, Where Your Possibilities Are Eternal
¡°I¡¯ve always hated that slogan. Well Enigma let¡¯s get started on what you look like shall we.¡± The voice said again, ¡°My name is Mimir and I will be your guide through this Alpha Stage of the Game.¡± "I thought I would at least recognize myself," Enigma mumbled, her voice sounding distant and distorted in the luminal space, not quite settled on what it was supposed to sound like. "Identity is not fixed, my good m¡ oh my good woman, sorry. Gender is still a new concept for me." the all-encompassing male voice responded, resonating within Enigma¡¯''s very being. "You are no longer bound by the limitations of your former existence. Embrace the fluidity, and shape your new self as you see fit." With a mix of trepidation and curiosity, Enigma focused her thoughts on refining her appearance. She concentrated on her facial features, her eyes, her hair, and her stature, willing them into a more defined form. Slowly, the swirling chaos began to settle, and her reflection sharpened into clarity. She watched as her face took on a more human likeness, her features aligning with the image she held in his memories of what she might have looked like as a woman. Her eyes regained their familiar lustrous hazel color, and her hair took on the light brown sheen as it lengthened into a faux mohawk that sat to the left side of her face . As the details fell into place, she felt a sense of familiarity and reassurance, a sense that this is the way she should have always looked. When the process was complete, Enigma stood before the mirror as a recognizable reflection of her transformed self. A sense of empowerment and liberation surged through her, accompanied by a profound understanding that she was now the architect of her own identity. As she stepped away from the mirror, the male voice returned, its tone carrying a hint of amusement. "Impressive. You''ve made quite the impression on your first interaction." Enigma couldn''t help but chuckle. "I suppose reinventing oneself is quite the icebreaker." "Indeed," the voice replied. "And now, as your transition nears completion, the world of Eterna awaits. Brace yourself, for your journey has only just begun. There¡¯s only one thing left-¡± With those words echoing in her mind, Enigma felt a surge of anticipation. The floor dropped out from beneath her and the mirror with her new self got closer and closer till she passed through the mirror and fell into the expanse beyond. There was something about the experience that Enigma had not felt in a lifetime when she opened her eyes. She was standing, her own strength and energy supporting her. A joyful feeling of control washed over her as she shifted her head and her arms, feeling in total control of her body. There was an enormous rush of emotion that overtook her, and the overwhelming joy of knowing that she was able to feel again pushed tears down her cheeks. In the end, this moment was so worth all the pain and intensity that had been experienced during the transition. Taking a deep breath and hugging herself, she felt the joy of being able to control her body and feel what was going on around her. She had done it. She had made it through the difficult transition from a physical being to a digital being and now she was alive and feeling again. She was so elated with the raw feelings that she barely noticed when a new voice addressed her from all around the well lit and stoney room. She looked to be in a dungeon of some sort. "Admin to Alpha One, can you hear me?" The male voice said. "Yes, I can hear you," Enigma said to the empty room. "Well at least the administrator controls work, it''s Tim we met before when I escorted you to ZefraTech," the voice said, he didn''t sound like Tim, it was a deep baritone voice that reverberated throughout the room. "Why does your voice sound like that?" "Oh, I''m not actually speaking, it''s a text to voice program," Tim said, "We won''t use it all the time, especially when other testers come online. This is just to ease you in, mostly we''ll be using pop-ups, and tool tips." "Okay, fair enough," Enigma said, just as she was about to look for a way out a small holographic screen popped up in front of her with a message from the administrator that was helping her along. *** TIM: Go through the door and take a right, that will lead you to the class and trait selection room. *** A small door on the other end of the room lit up with a golden glow. Enigma got up, and was overcome in the sensation of walking again. A smile was perpetually plastered to her face, it was all worth it. She opened the door and walked down the long narrow corridor, well lit with torches hanging in sconces from the walls. It was all very medieval, with all stone floors and walls. The only wood to be found was the beams across the ceiling. Rounding the corner she found many more doors lining both sides of the hallway. At the end was a large round room open to the sky and stars above. "Is it night right now?" *** TIM: yeah the day night cycle is ten times faster than on earth right now. But you should see little difference, it will seem to you like normal time is passing. A regular work day for us will be about three and half days for you. So we should be in touch for most of this first day or so. Unfortunately that does mean for the vast majority of the time you¡¯ll be on your own. *** "Great. So I''ll be stuck without admin support for nearly a week at a time?" Enigma said, rolling her eyes. *** TIM: sorry bud, until we get a 24 support staff, that''s the way it''s gonna be. *** Enigma sighed and moved down the steps to the center of the round amphitheater style room. In the center was a round table spoked like a big wheel. In the center of the wedges were symbols representing, she assumed, classes. Three were lit up while the other 9 were grayed out. A sword, a knife, and staff were all shining gold on the wheel.
Welcome to the class selection table you may choose from any class or spin the wheel and take your chances. If spun, you will be granted a random skill that is class specific, but you will be unable to choose a different class until the tutorial ends. Please choose now Warrior, Mage, Thief, Random
Seems like the standard fighter, wizard, rogue setup from most fantasy settings. Well I''m sure it will have tooltips so yeah let''s just see what I''m getting with each one, deciding to click on Warrior.
Warriors are the most basic martial class, and are able to specialize into many different disciplines. Be them fighting, assassination or the arcane. They are the generalists of the world, never specializing in any specific area. Benefits: +2 Strength, and Wisdom each character level. +1 skill or feature every other level. Detriments: -3 to Charisma and Intelligence upon choosing this class. Choose Warrior as base class? Yes/No
Well I guess I should see what my base scores are first.
Enigma Level 0 Human - no base class found HP - 80 ST - 80 MP - 155 Strength 8 (-2) Perception 12 (0) Agility 10 (0) Constitution 8 (-2) Intelligence 15 (+5) Wisdom 11 (+1) Charisma 4 (-6) Luck 12 (+2) 10 unassigned stat points No skills found
Well I could assign all of those to bring my base scores to normal. But if I go with that I¡¯ll still be short no matter how I allocate them based on the class scores. She selected no opting to see her other options.
Mages are the Wizards and Sorcerers of the world; they sacrifice raw strength for vast amounts of arcane power. Reshaping the world with magic, and bending reality to their will. Mages are not just limited to casting spells however, they are able to use their own powers to create magical items such as wands, staves and even scrolls. The abilities that a mage can learn depend on how much devotion they put into research and practice. Benefits: +2 Intelligence and Perception each character level, +3 spells each level, +1 skill every three levels. Detriments: -2 Strength, Constitution, and Agility upon choosing this class. Select Mage as base class? Yes/No
I think I like that better, still gonna have to dump points into Charisma and Constitution. I''ll probably be short no matter what. Selecting no again she moved on to the last option.
Thieves are the rogues of the world, seeking shadows and darkness. They can sneak in and out of places undetected. The class of assassin''s and shadowmancers, it can help anyone get ahead in gold and wealth. While making many enemies along the way. Benefits: +2 Agility and Charisma each character level. +1 skill at base and +1 skill every other level after 1, +1 spell every 4 levels. Detriments: -3 to Wisdom and Strength. Negative alignment with city guards. Select Thief as base class? Yes/No
Well that''s definitely not helpful, if I go with this class sure I would be fine stat wise but I would start with a negative in alignment in cities. Definitely a zero sum game on choice. She eyed the glowing question mark below a handle that would set the table to start spinning. Well let''s take a spin! She pulled the handle and it started spinning each of the symbols lighting up as it passed her on the wheel. It started to slow and landed on a picture of a skull.
(Warlock¡.error - class not found¡.respin)
The wheel started spinning again and this time landed on a picture of a leaf.
(Druid¡.error - class not found¡.respin)
Enigma sighed, ¡°this may take awhile.¡± After three more spins landing on the classes, Guardian, Warlock again, and Scholar. It finally landed on a class she could use.

Huh, well I guess magic is the way to go. Now about these stats, but before she could get to that another message appeared.
Congratulations! You are the first to use the random class generator, get a title, Gambler. Hope it doesn''t become a habit.
She clicked on the title to see the description.
Gambler - this title grants the one time effect of a random luck based skill. As well as giving a +5 to Luck as long as this title remains in your active title slots. 1 of 5 title slots filled, 0 of 15 passive titles. Activate bonus skill now? Yes/No

Would you like to accept a friend request from TIM(Admin)? Yes/No
Seems simple enough, She clicked yes and thanked Tim. The room was stagnate and dim, a smelled of old books and stale air. The wheel in the center of the room was dim, and the only other path out was a large staircase that led out into the rest of the Tutorial. Moving to the top of the stairs only impenetrable darkness lay beyond the threshold. ¡°Well I guess I should see what¡¯s through door number one,¡± Enigma said heading for the door. Going through the door he was greeted with a blinding light and the darkness of the room beyond was lifted. She was standing in a meadow with a slight breeze and sunlight above, the warmth of the sun blazing on his skin as he looked around at the trees and mosses surrounding him. Looking over his shoulder behind him he saw the same impenetrable darkness as before, she laughed internally, loading screen. Walking through the thin copse of trees, the obvious scenario of the basic test of either greed or strength was evident. Stuck fast in the middle of a boulder was a rusty longsword with beams of sunlight gleaming down on the sword itself. In the hilt were gemstones and what looked to be loose gold wire wrappings. Classic Sword in the Stone, chuckling to herself, ¡°I doubt I have the strength stat for this but sure i¡¯ll give it a try,¡± rubbing her hands together she gripped the hilt with both hands. As she attempted, futilely, to pull the sword out a system window appeared.
(Martial Class not found¡) (Sword Proficiency not found¡) Item not granted¡
¡°Well can¡¯t say I didn¡¯t try,¡± she said leaving the sword behind, ¡°Maybe one day.¡± As she moved through the trees she smelled the damp undergrowth and the soft crunch of dirt beneath her feet. Once again she was lost in the sensation of the simple act of walking again. So lost in fact that she almost walked straight into the path of a large white horse as it galoped past her. Stepping back she was nearly bowled over by the large beast as it darted into the trees. Probably a mount for another class or for later levels, she thought as she watched the majestic white mare vanish into the forest. Walking deeper into the forest, something tickled at the back of her mind. A ringing or melody that didn¡¯t seem native to her ordinary thoughts. She focused her mind on the feeling and almost without warning an image of a particular tree was presented in her mind''s eye. A large thorny tree with a hollow at the base, surrounded on all sides by darkened moss.

She blinked as she dismissed the notification. So that¡¯s how a skill increase works, she spied a small progress bar in her vision just below where it displayed her current health and mana pools. It was half-way filled. Focusing on the feeling again she found it gave her a slight sense of direction of which way the tree was located, by giving her a clearer or dimmer image of the tree the closer she got. She felt the air grow hot and her breathing became labored as the oxygen grew thin. The moss on the ground started to look scorched and withered, and the trees became increasingly dry and cracked. Would be really nice to have a higher constitution right now. Coming over a small hill into a clearing she found the twisted and thorny tree, in the hollow was a simple staff radiating heat and a small flame resonating in a crystal centered on the top of the staff. The staff radiated heat as it sent out a wave of mana into the air.
Quest offered! Find a way to turn off the Staff of the Inferno Mage Reward: 200 Class Experience, Random Magical Staff.
Breathing heavily she took shelter behind a tree away from the waves of magic emanating from the staff. Ok so I need to find a way to get in there and see what¡¯s going on with the staff without dying. She opened her character menu and looked through the tabs until she found the spells tab.
Spells - No spells found - 3 unassigned spell slots
Slapping a hand to her face she pulled up the base character sheet and saw that she hadn¡¯t bothered to assign her extra points after getting her class either. Quickly moving through the menu she assigned the points as she thought appropriate.

Well at least I¡¯m not gasping for breath now, let''s look at spells next, Enigma thought as she pulled open the spell selection window. She scanned the extensive list settling on a few that he liked the look of for his particular situation.
Mage Armor - Create a magical barrier around yourself that ablates incoming damage. 100 MP, duration 10 minutes. Force Shield - Create a unidirectional barrier of force that dampens incoming damage or blocks incoming spells. Requires channeling mana. 2MP per second. Dampen Elements - Create an area of climate control around yourself that moves the static climate around you to more normal temperatures. Requires channeling mana. 1MP per second.
While all of the options were good she didn¡¯t think the one that would be immediately useful would be good for her long term plans. She was going to be here a long time after all and a mistake here could spell disaster later. After a careful consideration of her options, Enigma chose to learn "Mage Armor." She felt that creating a protective barrier around herself would be the most practical for the challenge she was facing with the Staff of the Inferno Mage. With a mental command, she invoked the spell, and a shimmering, translucent energy field enveloped her. For her other spells she chose Weaker Regeneration, and Ice Spear. After all, having a quality way to heal and attack creatures that rely on fire would be useful.
Weaker Regeneration - this spell allows the caster to Regenerate a small amount of health, 1+n/second where n is equal to your constitution modifier. Ice Spear - this spell allows the caster to launch a small thin lance of ice at a target, 4(n)/spear where n equals the caster''s intelligence modifier.
Feeling bolstered by her magical protection, she stepped cautiously towards the thorny tree, the waves of heat and magical energy becoming more bearable. As she approached the hollow, she spotted a small opening in the thorny branches, just big enough for her to slip through. Gingerly, she maneuvered herself into the tight space, finding herself in a cramped cavity under the tree. There, in the center of the hollow, was the source of the magical flames¡ªan ornate staff with a crystal at its tip, radiating a vibrant red light. Enigma studied the staff, trying to assess the situation. It seemed clear that the staff was the cause of the scorching environment, but she needed to find a way to disable it without harming herself. Examining the crystal closely, she noticed a faint etching of runes on its surface. Her magical affinity might allow her to decipher their meaning. Concentrating, she touched the crystal with a fingertip, focusing her energy into understanding the runes'' purpose. After a moment of intense concentration, a message appeared before her:
(Runes of Binding: Inferno Control)
The message gave Enigma a glimmer of insight. It seemed that the runes were responsible for controlling the intensity of the magical flames emitted by the staff. Perhaps she could manipulate the runes to reduce the flames and neutralize the dangerous effects. She closed her eyes, visualizing the runes and the flow of energy through them. Slowly and deliberately, she traced a line through the runes in her mind''s eye, modifying their pattern. She felt a shift in the magical energy around the staff, and the flames began to wane. As the fiery glow dimmed, the temperature in the hollow started to drop, and the scorching environment began to dissipate. The flames receded until they were extinguished completely, leaving only a cool and peaceful atmosphere behind.

With a satisfied smile, Enigma stepped out of the hollow, her newly acquired knowledge about manipulating runes filling her with a sense of accomplishment. She looked at the staff, now harmless, and felt an overwhelming urge to pick it up. However, she was cautious; she had learned from her previous experience with the sword in the stone. She opened her character menu and checked her proficiency with polearms¡ªher skills had improved considerably.

Confident that she had the necessary skills, she reached for the staff. As her fingers wrapped around the handle, she felt a surge of energy pass through her, as if the staff was recognizing her as its rightful owner. The crystal on the staff''s tip glowed softly, and a message appeared:
(Item Acquired: Staff of the Emberforge) Staff of the Emberforge Common, Growth
This staff holds within it a seed of the emberheart tree, and thus holds great potential for growth if nurtured correctly. A common staff of wildfire druids and fire mages, this staff has been imbued with the runes of the inferno giving it enhanced resistance to flame.
The staff felt warm in her hands, pulsing with latent magical power. Enigma could sense that the staff had potential beyond its initial capabilities and that with time and effort, she could unlock even more of its potential. Feeling accomplished and eager to continue her journey, Enigma decided to explore the meadow a bit more. As she walked, she marveled at the beauty of the virtual environment, the vivid colors, and the sense of immersion. She realized that even though she was in a digital realm, the experiences and emotions she was feeling were very real. After some time, she stumbled upon a narrow path that led deeper into the forest. Curiosity piqued, she followed the path, eager to see what else lay ahead. The forest grew denser, and the path became less defined, but Enigma pressed on, guided by a sense of adventure. As she walked, she noticed a faint light flickering between the trees ahead. Intrigued, she quickened her pace until she reached a clearing where an ethereal blue flame danced atop a pedestal. Above the flame was a sign that read:
(Challenge: Trial of the Flame) Dare you tempt fate and consider yourself better than flames incarnate? Are you ready to begin? Yes/No
With a burst of magical energy, the Trial of the Flame commenced. The blue flame swirled and expanded, forming into a fiery humanoid figure that towered over Enigma. Its blazing eyes fixed on her with an intensity that seemed to pierce through her very being. The air around it crackled with heat, and Enigma could feel the scorching energy emanating from the elemental entity. Summoning her courage, Enigma conjured a spear of ice in her hand, feeling the frosty energy surge through her veins. She launched the icy projectile at the elemental, aiming for its chest. The spear sailed through the air, striking the fiery figure with a resounding thud. The ice shattered upon impact, scattering frozen shards across the ground. The elemental let out a guttural screech, its fiery form flickering momentarily. However, the elemental was far from defeated. It raised its arms, and flames roared to life around it, swirling and dancing like a tempest. With a swift and fluid motion, it hurled a gout of searing fire toward Enigma''s face. Instinctively, Enigma''s reflexes kicked in, and she raised the Staff of Emberforge as a shield. The flames crashed against the staff, engulfing it in a brilliant burst of light. Enigma could feel the intense heat pressing against the barrier, and for a moment, she thought she might be overwhelmed. But then, a sensation unlike any she had felt before coursed through the staff and into her hands. The staff absorbed the flames, drawing the fiery energy into its core. Enigma''s eyes widened in amazement as she watched the staff glow brighter and brighter, the flames swirling within its crystal tip to the seed within. A surge of power surged through her, invigorating her senses and revitalizing her magical abilities. Emboldened, Enigma took a step forward and slammed the butt of her staff into the ground. A wave of cold energy rippled outward, chilling the ground beneath her feet, it melted quickly, stifled by the incompatibility of the spell with the staff. The elemental roared in defiance, flames intensifying as it lunged forward with a massive, molten fist. Enigma barely had time to roll aside as the fist crashed into the ground, sending embers and molten debris in all directions. Gritting her teeth, she extended her free hand, summoning another ice spear, this time larger, crackling with arcane energy. She hurled it with all her strength, aiming for the elemental''s core. The spear struck true, piercing through its chest. A hiss erupted from the creature as steam billowed into the air, but it retaliated instantly, sending a spiraling tornado of fire toward her. Enigma barely managed to move the staff in time, the firestorm crashing against her defenses, causing her to stumble backward. Sweat dripped from her brow as the sheer force of the heat threatened to sap her energy. She couldn¡¯t let it end like this. Channeling her magic deeper than before, she planted her feet and called upon her newly forming connection to the Staff of Emberforge. The crystal atop the staff glowed an intense crimson, resonating with the flames still trapped within. With a sudden burst of instinct, she redirected that energy outward, unleashing a counterblast of fire infused with her own frost magic. The opposing flames clashed midair, the two energies battling for dominance. The elemental shrieked as Enigma''s frostfire pushed through, engulfing it in an explosion of ice and embers. The creature staggered, its form destabilizing. Seeing her chance, Enigma sprinted forward, staff raised high, and brought it crashing down onto the elemental¡¯s core.
Staff of the Emberforge charged (10%)
She conjured a series of sharp icicles and sent them hurtling toward the elemental, striking its molten form with precise accuracy. The elemental recoiled from the impact, its fiery body wavering momentarily as chunks of ice melted away. The battle raged on, fire meeting ice in a dazzling display of elemental forces colliding. Enigma danced between attacks, her agility barely allowing her to avoid the elemental''s fiery onslaught. Till a mistimed step tripped her up and she fell to the ground in a heap. She righted herself just in time for the staff to take most of the blow that slammed into her.

Enigma screamed as the flames and molten rock burned her skin. Her years in the marines had taught her to push through pain and injury, so she pushed out with her frost magic. She focused it on the elemental core and didn¡¯t stop pushing power till her MP dropped to nearly empty, she triggered Mystic Reserves and kept pushing the cold. Colder, must make it colder. She shouted in her mind. After what seemed like an eternity she lay there shivering the molten elemental now cold and solid rock.

Enigma couldn''t help but smile. She shuffled out from underneath the frozen elemental and stood. She wacked the stone with her staff, ¡°Take that you overgrown pile of¡pile of..rocks? Man, I really have to start coming up with some witty one-liners.¡± She took a deep breath and cast Weaker Regeneration on herself bringing her HP back to full but tanking her MP again. A wave of nausea overcame her and she staggered. Centering herself again she brushed off the remaining ash and dirt on her clothes seeing that her spawn gear was full of holes and were basically no better than rags now. ¡°Damn it. One day and I already need new clothes.¡± She chuckled, ¡°Clothes shopping here I come. Now all I need is a shopping mall and I¡¯m all set. Wait!¡± She looked at her inventory. ¡°No money. Fuuuuuu¡¡± After cursing a few more times she took stock of her surroundings. Her gaze fell upon an intriguing sight¡ªa stone pedestal at the center of the clearing just beyond the trial area. Upon it rested an intricate key, shimmering with a mysterious energy. Drawn by curiosity, Enigma approached the pedestal and examined the key. It was unlike any she had seen before, with intricate engravings that seemed to shift and change as she looked closer. Before she could ponder further, a message appeared before her:
(Challenge: Puzzle of the Enigmatic Key) Unlock the secret of the Enigmatic Key and open the door to untold rewards. Are you ready to begin? Yes/No
Intrigued by the prospect of solving a puzzle, Enigma''s curiosity got the better of her. He clicked "Yes" As the virtual landscape shifted, Enigma found herself standing before a massive stone door, adorned with intricate carvings. At its center was a keyhole, exactly the size and shape of the key she held. Eager to proceed, she inserted the key into the lock. The moment the key clicked into place, the stone door shuddered, and a series of arcane symbols materialized before her. A voice, gentle yet cryptic, echoed in her mind: "Unlock the path by aligning the symbols of old, As fate unfolds, the truth shall be told. Seek the patterns, heed the signs, To unravel the enigma, intertwining lines." ¡°Ha, enigma.¡± she quipped. Enigma studied the symbols closely, realizing that they were arranged in a circular pattern, with lines connecting them in a complex web. Each symbol had its unique attributes, and the lines connecting them seemed to suggest a sequence. The challenge was clear¡ªto decipher the sequence of symbols that would unlock the door. But as she contemplated the intricate puzzle, she felt a sense of humility. The symbols were unlike anything she had encountered before, and she knew that only a thoughtful approach would lead her to the solution. With a deep breath, she started examining the symbols one by one, their meanings and connections slowly revealing themselves. Hours passed, and the virtual sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow across the landscape. Yet Enigma remained focused, determined to unravel the puzzle''s secrets. As the last rays of sunlight dipped below the horizon, a sudden realization struck her. The symbols weren''t merely random¡ªthey formed a pattern based on their attributes and connections. With renewed determination, she rearranged the symbols in the sequence that resonated most with her. A soft rumble echoed through the air as the stone door shifted. The orb in front of her shifted into the shape of the key from before. The enigmatic key glowed brighter, and the door creaked open, revealing a chamber filled with an ethereal light.
Quest Complete: Puzzle of the Enigmatic Key Reward: Unlocking the chamber of untold rewards. You may take any two items.
Enigma stepped through the open doorway, her heart racing with anticipation. As she entered, the chamber bathed her in a warm, radiant glow, illuminating an array of pedestals, each holding a different item¡ªa glowing crystal, an ancient tome, a shimmering potion, and more. The chamber seemed to radiate an aura of magic and possibility, as if it held the culmination of all his efforts and trials. She walked toward the tome with anticipation but just as she reached for her reward her hand wavered. The book seemed to fragment and glitch, as the chamber glimmered and shifted, then all of the rewards just vanished. She was teleported back to the pedestal from before the puzzle, the key softly glowing on the pedestal. The message played again, yet this time it was distorted and quivering:

Suddenly she found herself back in the forest center just off the path from where she met the white horse. She was sitting on a large stump that looked like it was used for splitting wood and a large cord of wood was stacked neatly against the back of a small cabin. The cabin stood nestled amidst the verdant embrace of the forest, a serene oasis of wood and stone that exuded rustic charm. Its exterior bore the marks of craftsmanship and care, a testament to the skill that had gone into its construction. The cabin''s wooden walls were weathered and textured, their earthy tones blending harmoniously with the surrounding trees. Ivy vines cascaded down from the rooftop, adding a touch of natural elegance to the scene. A stone pathway meandered from the cabin''s entrance, winding its way through a scattering of wildflowers that embraced the edges of the clearing. The air was fragrant with the scent of pine and earth, and dappled sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting playful patterns on the cabin''s facade. The cabin itself was of modest size, inviting rather than imposing. Its design seemed to draw inspiration from traditional cottages, with a sloping roof adorned with wooden shingles that gave it a timeless charm. A quaint chimney peeked out from the rooftop, hinting at the warmth and comfort within. As she walked the pathway of verdant stones and up to the door of the cabin the faint smell of roasting meat and fresh baked bread hit his nose. Stepping through the cabin''s wooden door, Enigma found herself enveloped in a cozy ambiance that felt like a comforting embrace. The interior was a harmonious blend of rustic simplicity and thoughtful design, each element contributing to a sense of homecoming. The main living area was a warm and inviting space. The walls were adorned with simple tapestries depicting scenes of nature, adding a touch of color and vibrancy to the wooden backdrop. A large fireplace dominated one wall, its crackling flames casting a soft, golden glow that danced across the room. A comfortable, worn-in sofa and a pair of armchairs were arranged around a low wooden table, inviting guests to relax and unwind. A thick, woven rug covered the polished wooden floor, lending an element of warmth and texture. To one side of the living area, a modest kitchenette was tucked neatly into a corner. Wooden shelves held an assortment of earthenware dishes and cooking utensils, while a cast-iron stove stood ready to bring culinary creations to life. A narrow hallway led off the main room, revealing a small bedroom that exuded a sense of tranquility. A cozy bed was adorned with a quilted coverlet in shades of blue and green, while a window offered views of the surrounding forest. A wooden writing desk sat by the window, accompanied by an unlit lantern and a stack of parchment, a short letter, a plate laden with pot roast meat and vegetables, next to a plate of still steaming bread and crumbled cheese with a tankard of something she was sure was mildly alcoholic. ¡°Now that¡¯s what I call Fantasy,¡± Enigma said, pulling the chair to the desk and digging into the meal. It was perhaps the first real night of rest that she had had in a long, long time. Chapter 4 - 4 Months Ago Chapter 4 4 Months Ago Sarah Alexander had been waiting for nearly an hour in the well-appointed lobby of the COO''s office of ZefraTech. The muted greens and greys gave the ambiance of calm yet detachment ¨C the very essence of corporate professionalism that ZefraTech had meticulously cultivated in recent years. It was a far cry from her own office and Kami Technologies'' aesthetic of glass walls and transparency, everything here was shadows and dark corners. She shifted slightly in the plush chair, her fingers tapping a nervous rhythm on the armrest. Her thoughts were a whirlwind of conflicting emotions and concerns, all converging on the pivotal meeting that awaited her. As the assistant director to the director of Kami Technologies and a direct pupil of Dr. Kami himself, Sarah had always prided herself on her ability to maintain composure under pressure. Yet, today''s circumstances were anything but ordinary. She knew that her brother in the digital realm of Elysium Online, was the linchpin in a web of intrigue that could shatter the delicate balance of her professional and personal worlds. Finally, the office door swung open, and Mr. Liam Vernon Trace stepped out, his sharp features accentuated by a perfectly tailored suit. Sarah rose gracefully, her expression neutral as she extended her hand. "Ms. Alexander, thank you for your patience," Mr. Trace said with a polite smile, shaking her hand. "Please, come in." Sarah followed him into the COO''s spacious office, her gaze sweeping over the sleek and minimalistic d¨¦cor that exuded an air of authority. The panoramic windows offered a stunning view of the city skyline, a stark contrast to the complex emotions swirling within her. "Please, have a seat," Mr. Trace gestured toward a sleek leather chair positioned before his expansive desk. "Thank you," Sarah replied, settling into the chair, her heart pounding in her chest. Mr. Trace took his place behind the desk, his gaze fixed on her. "I trust you''re aware of the delicate situation we find ourselves in, Ms. Alexander?" Sarah nodded, her eyes meeting his. "Yes, Mr. Trace. I understand my actions have consequences I¨C" Mr. Trace leaned back, his fingers steepled beneath his chin, he emphasized the first few words cutting her off, "You see, Dr. Kami''s influence within our organisation is undeniable. He holds the key to the future of our company, and yet, his vision and decisions have begun to deviate from our desired trajectory. That being said, he has taken full responsibility for your actions, saying that it was his oversight and neglect that led to your near act of corporate espionage." Sarah''s brows furrowed slightly. She had always held Dr. Kami in high regard, viewing him as a mentor and visionary. But the currents of power and ambition within the company were more complex than she had ever cared about, all she cared about was the science and how it could help her brother. "We''ve been watching your progress closely, Ms. Alexander," Mr. Trace continued, his gaze unwavering. "Your dedication, your intellect ¨C they''re remarkable. Which is why I believe you can play a crucial role in this delicate matter." Sarah''s heart clenched. She had a sinking feeling she knew where this conversation was heading. "Your work on Eterna Online, the virtual realm your brother now inhabits," Mr. Trace stated. Sarah nodded, her fingers curling slightly around the armrest. "Yes?" Mr. Trace leaned forward, his voice dropping to a hushed tone. "We believe that you could provide the board and myself with valuable insights into Dr. Kami''s intentions. Insight that could help secure Kami Technologies'' future ¨C your own, and your brothers of course." Sarah''s mind raced as she processed the implications of his words. Her brother''s digital existence was now a bargaining chip in a corporate power struggle. She felt trapped, torn between her loyalty to her family and her commitment to her career. "I won''t compromise my principles," Sarah replied firmly, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging within her. Mr. Trace''s smile remained, but a coldness entered his eyes. "You misunderstand, Ms. Alexander. This isn''t a request. This is a choice you''ll have to make if you want to protect your brother and ensure your place in this company," He gestured to the land-line phone on his desk, "All it would take is a single phone call, and I could scrub the current user data from our servers. All data, even digital entities." "But that would¨C" "Yes, but your brother''s legal status is already dead. He is, as far as the law is concerned, a digital asset and therefore property of ZefraTech," He finished steepling his fingers once again. Sarah''s heart pounded in her chest. The weight of the decision pressed upon her, a heavy burden that threatened to crush her resolve. She had always believed in standing up for what was right, but now she was faced with a moral quandary that had far-reaching consequences. As she met Mr. Trace''s unyielding gaze, Sarah knew that the shadows of manipulation were closing in around her. She had entered a dangerous game of corporate intrigue, where the lines between loyalty and self-preservation blurred, and her brother''s fate in the balance. She couldn''t let her brother''s fate be manipulated, nor could she ignore the looming threat that the COO represented. With a deep breath, she met his gaze head-on. "I''ll need time to consider your proposal," she said, her voice unwavering. Trace''s smile returned, a predator scenting its prey. "Of course, Sarah. Take all the time you need. But remember, time is a luxury you might not have." As Sarah left the office, her thoughts were a storm of uncertainty. The corporate landscape that had once seemed stable now felt like shifting sands, and she was standing at the precipice, poised to make a choice that could alter the course of her life and her brother''s future forever. Sarah sat rigidly in the chair, her fingers pressed into the cool leather armrest. She had expected the meeting to be tense, but Mr. Trace¡¯s veiled threats carried a weight that sent a cold shiver down her spine. Mr. Trace leaned back, his sharp blue eyes studying her like a specimen under a microscope. The subtle hum of the city below filled the silence between them, an omnipresent reminder of the world that still existed outside of these walls¡ªa world she feared her brother might never return to. ¡°I admire your loyalty,¡± he said, his voice smooth, as if he were reassuring an old friend. ¡°But loyalty, Ms. Alexander, is a fluid concept in our industry. It bends, shifts¡ molds itself to necessity. I do hope you understand that necessity is upon us.¡± If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. Sarah exhaled slowly, careful to keep her expression neutral. ¡°If Dr. Kami has taken responsibility for my actions, then I don¡¯t see why I¡¯m here,¡± she said carefully, testing the boundaries of the conversation. Trace¡¯s lips curled into something that wasn¡¯t quite a smile. ¡°Because, my dear, while Dr. Kami is invaluable, he is also¡ sentimental. He still clings to notions of ethics, of morality, of purpose. That is admirable in a scientist, but troubling in an executive.¡± He paused, watching her reaction. ¡°You, however, are pragmatic. I believe you understand what¡¯s truly at stake here.¡± Sarah swallowed the indignation rising in her throat. ¡°What exactly are you asking me to do?¡± Trace tapped his fingertips together. ¡°Monitor him. Keep us informed of his decisions before they become¡ problematic. Discreetly, of course. No need for dramatics.¡± Her stomach twisted. ¡°You¡¯re asking me to spy on my mentor?¡± Trace gave a low chuckle, as if the very notion amused him. ¡°Spy is such a crude word. Consider it a¡ precautionary measure. A safeguard to ensure that Kami Technologies remains on the correct trajectory. We wouldn¡¯t want all of Dr. Kami¡¯s efforts to be wasted, now would we?¡± Sarah felt the trap closing around her. If she refused, her brother was at risk. If she agreed, she would betray the one person who had believed in her. She forced herself to remain calm. ¡°You mentioned securing my brother¡¯s future,¡± she said. ¡°What guarantees do I have that his data¡ªhis very existence¡ªwon¡¯t be erased the moment I comply?¡± Trace¡¯s expression remained impassive, but there was something calculating in his gaze. ¡°You have my word, Ms. Alexander. And while I recognize that may not be sufficient on its own, consider this: a partnership with me ensures that your brother remains an asset, not a liability. That alone should tell you which choice is in your best interest.¡± Sarah clenched her jaw. She was being given the illusion of choice, but the outcome had already been decided. Her brother was a hostage in a gilded cage, and she was being asked to hold the key while pretending she had any real power. ¡°I¡¯ll need time,¡± she repeated, her voice steadier this time. Trace studied her for a long moment, then nodded. ¡°Of course. Time is a valuable commodity. But don¡¯t mistake this for an indefinite offer, Ms. Alexander.¡± He reached for the phone on his desk and ran a finger along its sleek surface, the unspoken threat hanging between them like a blade suspended by a thread. Sarah pushed herself to her feet, keeping her posture composed despite the storm of emotions roiling inside her. ¡°I¡¯ll be in touch.¡± Trace stood as well, his movements as deliberate as his words. ¡°I look forward to your decision.¡± As she turned to leave, she could feel his gaze lingering on her back. The moment she stepped out of the office and into the dimly lit corridor, she exhaled a breath she hadn¡¯t realized she was holding. Her mind raced. She needed to think, to plan. The world she had carefully built for herself was now riddled with cracks, and she was standing at the edge, staring down into an abyss that threatened to consume everything she held dear. As she boarded the elevator down to the ground floor she pressed a hand to her temple, willing the anxiety away. There had to be another way. There had to be a way to save her brother¡ without betraying the one man who had given her a purpose. As she walked through the building¡¯s long, sterile halls, her mind raced with possibilities. She needed leverage, something to hold against Trace as he did against her. But ZefraTech¡¯s grip was suffocatingly tight, their reach stretching far beyond the limits of her influence. There were few who could challenge the corporate behemoth, and even fewer she could trust. Outside, the cool evening air hit her like a jolt, yet it did little to calm the storm in her chest. The city stretched before her, an expanse of neon lights and restless movement, but tonight, it felt smaller¡ªtrapped under the weight of a predator¡¯s watchful eyes. She clenched her fists. She had spent years building herself up, proving her worth, fighting for every inch she had gained. She wouldn¡¯t let Trace strip that away. She wouldn¡¯t let him dictate her brother¡¯s fate like some discarded data file. She forced her hands to remain still at her sides. No trembling. No hesitation. If she was going to play this game, she needed to play it on her own terms. And she needed to win.
The sun had long since dipped below the horizon by the time Sarah made her way through the meticulously landscaped pathways of the commercial park, her thoughts heavy with the weight of the encounter she had endured. The tension from her meeting with Trace coiled tight around her ribs, constricting her breath as she ascended the grand staircase to the applied sciences lab. Unlike the imposing, monolithic structure of ZefraTech¡¯s corporate headquarters, the lab was a quiet sanctuary of innovation, hidden in plain sight, a fortress of knowledge that she and Dr. Kami had built together. The circuitous route between the two buildings¡ªthe artificial pond that split the park, the winding paths flanked by sculpted greenery¡ªhad always served as a welcome reprieve. But tonight, the journey offered no solace. The creeping dread in her stomach twisted as she replayed Trace¡¯s words, his veiled threats hanging over her like a guillotine poised to drop. As she reached the entrance, the familiar sterility of the lab greeted her. The crisp, conditioned air carried a faint trace of exotic herbs¡ªDr. Kami¡¯s signature infusion, a habit he had claimed helped him think. The scent mingled with the hum of active workstations and the low murmur of hushed conversations, creating an ambiance of controlled chaos. Researchers bustled past, their focus locked on their respective projects, oblivious to the turmoil that had followed her inside. She wove through the maze of machinery and desks until she reached her own station. The glow of the screens cast an artificial pallor over her face as she settled into her chair, her fingers brushing the cool surface of the console. This was her domain, her escape. And yet, even here, she could not shake the weight of Trace¡¯s proposition. "They asked you to spy on me, didn¡¯t they?" Dr. Kami¡¯s voice was calm, devoid of surprise. Sarah¡¯s spine stiffened at the sound of her mentor¡¯s familiar, measured tone. She turned to find him watching her with a knowing expression, his dull gray suit barely visible beneath the stained, threadbare lab coat he had refused to replace. Her throat tightened. "Yes," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "That¡¯s fair," he mused, stepping closer. "I was the one who encouraged you to pursue brain-to-computer interfaces. While I focused on mapping neural pathways, you perfected the bridge between cognition and code. Together, we cracked the impossible¡ªfull fidelity digital consciousness. We were just lucky the virtual space was ready for alpha." He nudged her ribs lightly, a familiar, fatherly gesture meant to comfort. But tonight, it felt like a silent reassurance that he already understood the choice before her. "I guess," she murmured. "Has he been fully integrated yet?" "In the next few months," he replied, leaning against the console. "It takes enormous processing power to integrate an entire lifetime. For him, it¡¯ll feel like the blink of an eye. When he wakes, it¡¯ll be seamless. No interruption, no missing time. Just¡ life. I¡¯ve nearly finished refining olfactory input. The sensation of taste and smell¡ªit¡¯ll make the experience complete." She inhaled deeply, picking up a sharp note in the air. She hesitated. "Brandy?" Dr. Kami grinned, his eyes twinkling beneath the weight of exhaustion. "Licorice, my dear girl!" Sarah gave him a skeptical look. "Really?" His laughter was easy, disarming. "For the digitizer, of course. I swear." She arched a brow, feigning suspicion as she reached into the pocket of his lab coat, withdrawing a small bottle of Ouzo. "Nothing to hide?" she challenged, holding it up. With a deft swipe, he reclaimed it, tucking it back into his pocket. "It¡¯s purely for research purposes." She exhaled, allowing herself a moment of levity before the weight of reality returned. "Trace wants reports," she admitted, the humor draining from her voice. "He wants me to watch you, to feed him information. He thinks you¡¯re losing control of your work." Dr. Kami sighed, rubbing his temples. "Spying is a game for those who lack imagination," he muttered. "Let him think what he wants. He¡¯s playing a short game. We are building something eternal." Sarah chewed on her lip, her gaze flickering to the monitors, the complex web of code and simulations that represented more than just science¡ªit was her brother¡¯s second chance at life. "Accept his offer," Dr. Kami said suddenly. Her head snapped toward him. "What?" His gaze was steady, unwavering. "Accept it. Let him think you¡¯re on his side. Let him believe he holds the cards." He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. "We have nothing to hide, Sarah. But that doesn¡¯t mean we have to show all our cards." She hesitated. "I don¡¯t want to betray you." His smile was small, but genuine. "And you won¡¯t. You¡¯re not alone in this. We stand together. But if we want to protect your brother¡ªif we want to protect our work¡ªwe have to be smarter than them." She met his gaze, searching for any trace of uncertainty, but there was none. Dr. Kami had always been the one constant in her life¡ªthe voice of reason, the guiding force behind her ambition. If he believed this was the right move, she had to trust him. A slow breath filled her lungs, steadying her resolve. "Alright," she said at last. "I¡¯ll do it." Dr. Kami¡¯s eyes softened. "Good girl. Now, let¡¯s get back to work. We have a world to build." Chapter 5 - Developments Chapter 5 Developments Several months had passed since Sarah''s tense meeting with Trace, months filled with cautious maneuvering, sleepless nights, and an ever-present sense of looming danger. She had played her role well¡ªoffering just enough information to keep Trace from questioning her loyalty while working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that Dr. Kami''s work, and more importantly, her brother¡¯s existence, remained intact. The pressure had been suffocating, but she had endured it. Now, standing in her office once more, she felt the weight of another revelation pressing down on her. A knock at the door pulled her from her spiraling thoughts. She exhaled sharply, composing herself before calling out, "Come in." Tim Gallagher entered, his usual easy-going demeanor muted by something far heavier. His normally unkempt hair was pushed back, and his expression was one of hesitation. That alone sent alarms blaring in Sarah¡¯s mind. Tim was rarely serious unless something was truly wrong. "You look like hell," she muttered, half in jest, half in genuine concern. "Thanks," Tim said, rubbing the back of his neck. He hesitated before stepping further into the room. "Look, I wouldn¡¯t be here if it wasn¡¯t important. I need to talk to you about William." Sarah stiffened, her grip tightening on her arms. "What about him?" Her voice was even, but her pulse was anything but steady. Tim shifted uncomfortably. "It¡¯s about his integration into Eterna. There¡¯s been¡ an unexpected development." She narrowed her eyes. "Tim. Just say it." He sighed, running a hand over his face. "He¡¯s not William anymore, Sarah. The system¡ªEterna¡ªprocessed his transition differently than we anticipated. When he woke up inside the virtual world, he wasn¡¯t just a version of himself. He¡ªshe¡ªreconstructed herself into something entirely new. She¡¯s calling herself Enigma now." For a long moment, Sarah just stared at him. "What the hell are you talking about?" she finally whispered. Tim stepped closer, lowering his voice as if the walls had ears. "The brain scan, the upload¡ªit didn¡¯t just capture William as he was. It also gave him the ability to reshape himself into the person he always saw himself as. The system didn¡¯t lock him into his past self. It allowed him to become something new. And now, we have a completely different body inside Eterna. Honestly it¡¯s groundbreaking, imagine what this could do for the trans community." Sarah¡¯s breath caught in her throat. Her brother had always been private about his struggles, about who he was deep inside. But this? This was something beyond anything she could have prepared for. "Does he¡ does she remember everything?" Sarah asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Tim nodded. "Yeah. She remembers being William. But she¡¯s Enigma now, and that¡¯s who she wants to be. She doesn¡¯t see this as a loss¡ªshe sees it as a rebirth." Sarah ran a hand through her hair, trying to process it all. "Have you spoken to her?" "Briefly. She¡¯s still in the tutorial zone and she¡¯ll be stuck there for awhile until we get the game world finished, but she¡¯s¡ different. More confident. More alive than I¡¯ve ever seen William be," Tim admitted, a faint smile tugging at his lips despite the gravity of the situation. ¡°Though that could just be that I never saw William before, not much life in a quadriplegic.¡± Sarah pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her breathing. This was her brother¡ªno, her sister¡ªfinding something she had never been able to find in the real world. "Does anyone else know?" she asked suddenly, dread settling into her stomach. This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version. Tim¡¯s expression darkened. "Not yet, but they will. Kinda hard to hide the fact that our sole inhabitant has suddenly become a woman.¡± ¡°Wow,¡± Sarah braced her head in her hands, resting on the desk. ¡°My brother was Trans.¡± Tim nodded slowly, ¡°She was a Marine right? Makes sense why they hid it.¡± Sarah steadied her breath one last time, her mind working quickly picking up on something Tim said, ¡°We can spin this. Market it as a solution for the Trans community like you said. I think that gets Trace on board with this, he¡¯s nothing if not pragmatic about business. I know the big selling point to the board was that they were sending in a marine to test out the system, and some of the board are still hung up on that a marine should be a man.¡± ¡°My thoughts as well, oh are we implementing the Title system yet?¡± Tim asked. Sarah shook her head, ¡°The Title system. No, it¡¯s buggy as hell. Infinite feedback loops, game breaking glitches, it¡¯s not even remotely ready for implementation.¡± ¡°That¡¯s what I thought. Just wanted to check, you need to talk to your team. Someone turned it back on in the base code. I¡¯ve turned it back off but I''ll need to do some digging into Enigma¡¯s data to deactivate the titles. I can¡¯t remove them but I can make it so they don¡¯t interact with anything.¡±
The conference room was bathed in cold artificial light, the polished obsidian table reflecting the stern faces of those seated around it. At the head sat Hector Zefra, hands steepled before him, expression unreadable. To his right, Dr. Kami adjusted his glasses, an air of quiet defiance about him. Across from him, Trace leaned back in his chair, fingers tapping against the armrest, his calculating gaze shifting between the two men. "We''re behind schedule," Zefra stated flatly, his voice carrying the weight of command. "And our investors are growing impatient. We need more alpha testers, Kami. We need live data." Dr. Kami inhaled slowly, barely masking his irritation. "Hector, pushing forward with more alpha testers before the system is ready would be disastrous. We are already experiencing unexpected anomalies. More bodies in the system could exacerbate the instability." Trace scoffed. "Instability is expected in any launch phase. That''s what patches are for. You keep delaying progress, but delays cost money. We need something we can sell, something we can show off to the board to justify the billions we''ve poured into this project." Kami¡¯s fingers curled slightly into his palm. "If you overload the system too soon, you risk irreversible corruption of the framework. This isn''t just a game, Trace. These are human minds. You¡¯re asking me to gamble with lives." Trace¡¯s smirk didn¡¯t waver. "Don¡¯t get sentimental, Doctor. You agreed to this contract. You knew what this was. If Eterna isn¡¯t profitable, it doesn¡¯t exist." Zefra leaned forward. "Dr. Kami, you¡¯re protecting something. I can see it in your hesitation. What is it?" Kami hesitated for only a moment. He knew the truth couldn¡¯t be revealed¡ªnot yet. Not until he understood it himself. "We are close to an unprecedented breakthrough in cognitive adaptation. The system is evolving in ways we couldn¡¯t have predicted. Enigma is proof of that. Rushing forward now, before I can refine the underlying architecture, would be reckless." Trace raised an eyebrow. "Enigma? That¡¯s the marine we uploaded, right? The one who decided to¡ change?" Kami¡¯s gaze sharpened. "She didn¡¯t ¡®decide¡¯ to change. The system allowed her to express who she truly is. That alone is a remarkable outcome. Do you not see the potential here?" Trace waved a dismissive hand. "It¡¯s a PR angle at best. A marketing gimmick we can exploit. But that doesn¡¯t solve our core issue¡ªwe need proof of scalability. One test subject a MMO does not make, this isn¡¯t a single player game." Zefra exhaled slowly, weighing the arguments before him. "Kami, how much more time do you need? Give me something concrete." Kami resisted the urge to sigh in relief. "Two months." Trace shook his head. "Ridiculous. Thirty days, tops and even then, the board will be wanting to pull the plug. The board won¡¯t allow more than that." Zefra nodded. "Then thirty days it is. But, Dr. Kami, if I don¡¯t see results by then, we move forward with or without your approval." Kami¡¯s jaw tightened, but he gave a small nod. "Understood, Hector." Trace smirked. "Glad we could come to an agreement. Now, let¡¯s talk monetization strategies-" Zefra interjected before Trace could continue. "Let¡¯s be clear¡profitability is key, but not at the cost of stability. If we lose control of the system, we lose everything. Trace, what options do we have to maintain investor confidence while giving Kami his thirty days?" Trace leaned forward, considering. "We leak carefully curated progress reports, emphasizing the groundbreaking aspects. We frame Enigma¡¯s transformation as a selling point¡ªcomplete self-reinvention in a digital afterlife. That¡¯ll turn heads. If we secure a few high-profile test cases, people with influence, we can spin this into a revolution." Kami¡¯s stomach twisted at the thought. "You mean turn real people into walking advertisements." Trace shrugged. "You say that like it''s a bad thing. We need buy-in from the public and the investors. We make this a cultural movement, not just a product." Zefra considered it, nodding slowly. "This could work. But no risks¡ªwe do this carefully. Dr. Kami, you will have your time. Trace, you will get your marketable story. Now, let¡¯s discuss how to present this to the board."
