《The Journals of Noiruzi Sangsung》
Salutations!
Hi! My Name is Noiruzi Sangsung, and I am from A Future!
OK I am really from the Momentarium, which is the point towards which all futures tend - the same way a person jumping off a high building tends towards the ground!
I am writing this for a lot of reasons. I am writing because I like people and I like you and it would be great to talk! Even though I live when you have long since crumbled to dust and your constituent atoms have been repurposed to build some humble piece of the Momentarium where I live and have lots of fun.
And I am writing this because I am an intern at the Momentarium Educational Stream, like all of my friends, like pretty much everyone I know except for a few who are actually teachers or even better full tenured employees of the Momentarium and available for time and space missions and determining what the pasts of everyone is like, to ensure they continue their easy and trouble-free tending towards us.
And as an intern I should have a super cool project to show at the end of my internship. I want something that really shows my tech jops - so I can get the tech job!
I will brag here, but it is true - I am one of the smartest and most ambitious in my class.
I''m even smarter sometimes than Nerv¨¦. Although maybe not as ambitious as Sausalito. Those two are my best friends.
My feels are always ?? ?? ?? ??!!!
Sausalito Bratfirst is almost always that but also ?? and ??
But Nerv¨¦ is so much ???? sometimes it makes me worried. It''s because a part of them died a while back. I don''t have time to talk about that now though.
I feel sad for Nerv¨¦ though, because of the death, and because of what it will probably mean.
But mainly I am writing this because it is a super cool project and I will show my teachers, including the mean ones, that I managed to set up a self-looping time messaging stream, so I could send text to many sites in your time, and these sites did not die or get attacked by dinosaurs because I remembered to set up all my failbacks. And this is also a super example of redundancy, which is a data saving strategy much used in your time when you had not yet developed superior data storage mechanisms for making sure things did not get kibbled. If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
To do that I am definitely going to have to figure out a way to make money down in your time, you are the times where people have money right? I think so - ooh, this is another part that is really good about my writing this, because I am going to specialize in the generations from 10 years before this is written to ten years after, which is a good solid time block if I go on missions, which I sure hope to at some point. The best way to earn extra bodies is to complete missions with glory. I already have 4 bodies.
I HAVEN''T EVEN USED TWO OF THOSE BODIES YET!! Sorry, I am sort of just squee over how lucky I''ve been.
Poor Nerv? of course only has the one body. That is why so sad, and why sometimes when I look over I catch the single body he has (might as well call him a he, because that is all he has to be) making this face ??. Because he is probably thinking about how he lost that body.
And it''s not fair when I think about it, Nerv? really loved his girl body, and now she is gone, and I miss hanging out with her.
Do you have anyone you miss hanging out with? I think it is sad not to hang out with people.
So I am writing this because I want to learn to hang out with people from your time, and you can give me pointers sometimes on my school assignments (which is totally allowed) and we can be friends across space and time, the way people are meant to be! And tell me how to make your money so I can set up payments here to keep service from this side, instead of spending super-high energy streams from this side - which as you can imagine is not the most efficient and would probably get me negative marks on my project when I turn it in for grading, especially if I get a mean teacher like Malburger Bombfrazz.
I don''t like him. I mean I totally respect and admire him, don''t get me wrong, he is the perfect teacher, but I find some of his hobbies icky. Like, he''s a serial killer. I know that''s his right and all but I still think it''s freaky.
Part of his recuperation phase in any time mission he goes on he uses to hunt down and kill people. Everything is done right, so there''s definitely not even a the slightest blip on the time stream from what he does, but I think it''s mean and it''s wrong. I know that''s my hangup and my Theoripute has said I need to work on myself and accept Malburger and understand he has the things he enjoys like torturing people who are anyway long dead just like I enjoy making funny memes and sharing them with you and hopefully getting a top grade and a good job from this!
So that was me and that my introduction, until later I remain your friend - Noiruzi Sangsung!
OOPS, IM LATE!
I almost missed it. I had a meeting with my Theoripute. I was at quad 78 running some skateboarding tricks. I have been learning skateboarding, it will be my physical skill if I ever - no - I mean when I come to your time.
Skateboarding was a big skill in your time, everybody needs a physical skill, a language, and at least one main mental preoccupation pertinent to a time when going to that time.
My mental preoccupation is reading / writing, that''s another reason why I am writing this so I can work on my preoccupation and get a good score. Mastery of the preoccupation is necessary to get a good score, and graduate and not be discarded and get a good job and be somebody important in the world. So you better believe I will do well with my preoccupation.
My friend Nerv¨¦ is going to Elizabethan England, or at least that is where he has focused his studies, real old time or that''s his goal, and his physical skill is sword-fighting. That worries me a lot for him, because he only has one body - what would happen to him if something were to happen to it? His preoccupation is the stage, which is cool, because his and my preoccupations have overlaps and we can sometimes help each other out.
So I was practicing my heelflips - I can do 3 tricks real good so far - ollies, nollies, and boardslides, obviously there is even more basic stuff than that. So I was practicing and Sausalito walks by and holds up her right fist and points at the extra thumb extension (she''s been learning to program and helped me set up this connection for the stories here) and the little timer hologram came out and I said a phrase I just learned from your time, really natural "Oh shit!"
And then I started running (it would be a big rule break to skateboard outside the designated training quads) and I got to my appointment with the Theoripute with only 150000 milliseconds to go!
That''s not very good writing is it? I should do it so I describe how I ran, and how I felt running, and the things I ran by and how difficult it was and what it meant to me to be running to make my Theoripute appointment.
And that is difficult of course because you might not understand a lot of it, but maybe that won''t be that important - I was reading a book recently and it had this in it
"I remember around three o''clock that afternoon I was standing way the hell up on
top of Thomsen Hill, right next to this crazy cannon that was in the Revolutionary War
and all. You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams
bashing each other all over the place. You couldn''t see the grandstand too hot, but you
could hear them all yelling, deep and terrific on the Pencey side" -- From A Book!
If I showed you all the notes I had to make and all the deep searches to even get a clue about what all of that meant you would glitch.
So when I said "Oh Shit" and started running I was starting in quad 78. I of course held my board under my left hand as I ran, I shortcut through the big arboretum that is focused on the DevonianThis content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
(I can''t send Video back from my time yet because of the cost of maintaining this stream, so here is a video from one of the video services in your time about what the Devonian is like)
https://youtu.be/KJdCytwAigU
Everybody jogs in the Devonian arboretum because the trees love carbon dioxide, so I was being good. Although most people jog in orderly rows and I was all crazy, but these trees here put out so much oxygen I didn''t even get out of breath, in fact I got maybe a bit high off of it.
I came out on the side with the white turtles and the pools with the Silurian life. The turtles are irritatingly hard to run around, slow but big so they''re in the way. You gotta go somewhat slow and careful because what if two turtles came and crushed you, well at least then I''d have a good excuse.
Oh why did I ever accidentally turn off my notifications!?!?
I zigzagged between their giant shells, somebody had graffitied ?? on the side of a really big turtle, I pictured with my eyes for later analysis and I jumped out the other side - that put me on the big curvy road with the food stops set up that follows the veldt where people go to tan between classes. Now I just had to follow the curve past the guardhouse where the Momentarium timekeepers come out on the hour and march about in their fanciest uniforms.
See recently I found a bug in the notifications template that tingles your inner ear when you have to be places and do things, and is so irritating because of course it has to be irritating to be useful! When you doze off in the cubbyhole near the timekeepers exit with the big old gloomy archway and you put your head up against the warmstone the radiations from within resets your notifications ticker. So I discovered that if you put on the warmstone right before timekeepers exit and then rub an ice cube counterclockwise below your ear you can set the notification tingle strength - and I accidentally completely turned mine off. Which was a silly mistake. I was going to write up a bug report but haven''t done it yet. It would be a major infraction to turn off notifications on purpose but not if it''s on accident like this was in the service of writing a complete bug report. Anyway I better turn it back on after this meeting.
Now I was on the home stretch where the road is by giant Ordovician lake with the graveyard of pirate ships, the ship closest to the shore is one called the Whydah Gally, its mast has fallen over to the side and I ran up it, and jumped across to the HMS Black Plague, which Nerv¨¦ and I learned you can swing from onto the top of the artzibition center because there is a loose rope hanging from its mast that nobody has ever thought to take away.
The artzibition today is the evolution of Butterflies. Only there is some sort of technical glitch in it because there are some butterflies that should have died out in the Pleistocene but then ended up in Salzburg about the time of Mozart which is weird. Everybody is talking about it.
So naturally I swung right into a swarm of Pleistocene butterflies, but escaped with only a few caught in my hair by going through the glass doors and then I took the elevator downstairs and I''m here, outside my Theoripute''s office with only 150000 milliseconds to go!
Oops, still got a butterfly in my hair. I put it in my side bag with the time stasis lock, and lock it. Otherwise it would probably die in there. I am nice like that and don''t like to kill anything.
The green light above the Theoripute door just dinged green, so that means it''s my turn!
That''s it for me now, Noiruzi Sangsung, time to go, talk to you later!
My Theoripute Appointment - 2217
The Theoripute is the guide that makes sure that we trend towards our perfect future, in the same way that you in the past trend towards us!
My Theoripute has an oldie look almost all the time, I''d say 89%, this. is a calming tactic enabling self-reflection, it also is almost always a male look, although sometimes it is non-human automaton and genderless. But today it is an old man, in an old office, and it''s computing eye is opened and visible with the colors yellow and blue. Everything is very blue, calming. It can probably tell my blood pressure is heightened from being late and having run.
"What''s that?" he asks, this is of course unneeded, he knows what a skateboard is.
"It''s a skateboard" I answer truthfully, it is always necessary to be 100% truthful with your Theoripute for obvious reasons!
"So I guess this means you have chosen your physical skill" he asks with a slight smile and upraised eyebrow.
"Yes!" I answer emphatically "Skateboarding is cool!" And it''s true, I like it.
I come further into the room and sit at an old leather chair that is extremely comfortable. I wonder if that is because we know how to make things comfortable now or if it is accurate - the things I have sat in that were meant to acclimatize us to your time were just not that comfortable, but this may be one of the most comfortable things I have ever sat in . I would like to sit here a long time. I smile at my Theoripute.
I discover an idea - what if the chair is so comfortable now because it is our technology trying to make a chair as comfortable, in relation to all the other chairs of its time, as the chair this one is modeled on must have been?
Perhaps the version of this chair in the past was not as comfortable as this one, but it was the most comfortable chair possible in the world of its time, and now - thanks to the tech available to us - I am sitting in a chair as great in comfort relative to all the other ways we may sit in our time as that original chair was great in comfort relative to all the other chairs of its time.
"What are you thinking?"
I tell him, of course.
He chuckles appreciatively, and writes in a little leather notebook on the desk in front of him. He doesn''t need to do that, it is a signifying communication that my clever observation is being recorded and I am being graded on it. The blue and yellow eye on his forward rotates and dilates, another communication. UX research on Theoripute communication shows that it is good to have multiple reinforcing signifiers on different levels so that all people are totally aware of what context they are in. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source.
"That is very originally thought, good points awarded!"
I blush and look demure a bit to signify I am pleased to be awarded good points.
"You have always been creative still..."
uh-oh
"Still, I wonder if sometimes you do not create too much, if you do not take on too many things. What do you think, Noiruzi?"
"I think you''re right, but I''m working on tying that down" smile
"I know you chose reading / writing as your mental preoccupation. What''s your special project going to be?"
"I''m doing a journal"
"A.. journal?" sits forward "that seems pretty.. trivial, unlikely to get noticed"
"I''m counting on writing really well, and scoring on substance over style"
The iris of the third eye dilates twice and goes back to normal, sits back, puts pen to lip, smiles tentatively "Good, I think this is very Good Noiruzi! I''m glad to see our previous talks have had an effect!"
"Thank you"
"You''re doing a journal?"
"Yes" big smile.
"OK that seems pretty clear cut. Now.." dramatic pause "How has your interpersonal authority issues been lately?"
I knew that one was coming "I think everything has been great, I realized what you said about Professor Malburger was true, and I should have considered that beforehand"
He sits for a moment, the third eye rotating its color wheel "Have you been experiencing any issues with your notifications?"
"No I have not experienced anything with my notifications" That is 100% true, because the notifications being off I have not experienced anything.
"hmm, there is difficulty reading you, but it seems you are aware that what I said about Professor Malburger was true and there will be no more problems because now everything is great"
And I discover now something I had not ever known - that the notifications tech also is connected to the mind sensing tech, which makes good engineering sense. Having found a way to turn off the notifications tech 100% on accident I have accidentally turned off the mind sensing tech. I will have to get to work right away on turning both of those back on, but I do have so many other things that are super important it might take a while.
I make a big smile to let him know everything really is great and I say "I am happy we are both in agreement"
The eye rotates, he can see me smiling and hears my words, and cannot divine anything below them - so he says "I am happy we are both in agreement!"
There is a silence and then he says "We should determine our next appointment"
Determining the next appointment is always difficult, if you want it too quickly then it is obvious there is a problem, that you are disturbed and want help, if you want it too late you are avoiding the difficulties of interacting with your Theoripute, which is not good.
"hmm, my schedule this segment is pretty busy because I have some lit reports to make" which is true "but if you want we can do it in 4 days, although may be that is overly soon given how good things are going - what do you think?" Earnestness.
"I think it is too soon given how good things are going - lets'' say we wait till next segment - 9 days"
Surprised face "OK, that seems a pretty good pick" 9 days is forever!
"Ok See you in 9 days, Noiruzi Sangsung"
How Bodies Work
I was going to talk about my class schedule, but then I thought that maybe I should talk about bodies because you don''t have more than one body where you are from and it might be confusing for you to hear that I have four bodies - FOUR - or that Nerv¨¦ only has 1.
I''ve heard rumors Malburger has over 30 bodies, figures. Also I heard they''re all male bodies. But I''m not supposed to think he''s weird, a teacher, a serial killer, and a time agent with over 30 bodies, all men, no female, not weird or open to criticism from a lowly student like me at all. Which I totally think is the way it should be, he''s paid his dues, as the saying goes in your time.
I don''t really know what the saying is in my time, but I know I am wrong for thinking he''s weird so I should stop it.
In your time people often think how cool it would be to be able to clone themselves, and make multiple versions of themselves, and if one of those selves died you would then have the many clones running around all being you.
Well that is a super-stupid idea!
When that happens then you have a bunch of versions of you all running around at the same time arguing over who is the prime, if you''re competitive in some area you''ll be competing with yourself in that area all the time, and any psychological issue you have is bound to cause conflicts between your selves.
But it is nice the idea that if you were to die you could carry on beyond that unfortunate occasion.
So before we are born each person gets two bodies, the first is whatever you were going to be born as - male or female body - the second is a clone of that with the gender reversed, so if your original body was going to be male it would be female or if you were going to be female that other body would be male.
Because these bodies are essentially both you it is actually easy to transfer your persona, your memories and thoughts between them at any time. The secondary body is kept without a persona, and the primary one develops, at about the third month after you are born the transferal starts regularly, so that you may be male one day and female the next, then as you get over you decide what you want to be that day, and then after a bit you probably decide what you want to be for weeks at a time or most of the time or even like Malburger all the time (not weird at all!)
I am female about 62% of the time, Nerv¨¦ before his other body died was about 50 / 50, now he''s always male of course, and my friend Sausalito has 3 bodies, and is sooo jealous of me because I have 4! Sausalito is female about 80% of the time, two of her bodies are female. She really only ever takes male out when she is going on outings that benefit from upper body strength, and I have to hand it to her, her male body is jacked, she totally works it out and focuses on getting good muscles. Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site.
Nerv¨¦ is also a bit muscular, but he is more like a runner / dancer and of course sword-fighter body (sword-fighting is his physical skill) He sometimes makes fun of Sausalito and his big muscles when Sausalito is a male.
So that''s why Nerv¨¦ only has one body, because it died, and it is a big worry for me. He says he doesn''t worry, he says actually he doesn''t care at all but he says it in a way that makes me think he cares so much he hates the world for it, and if you would offer him the body back he would refuse it just because of how mad he is.
I mean you think about it, how did Malburger end up with all male bodies? Obviously his female one died, and then he decided for some reason not to replace it. What is wrong with that guy? Nothing, I''m told.
I should probably get going I have class in a bit, but before I do I bet you''re wondering how we get more bodies.
The Momentarium being a. meritocracy and the most perfect society ever built, which it ought to be having been made at the end of everything, of course rewards people who have done things especially well, and one obvious way to reward people is to give them more bodies because that way, if one of your bodies dies like it did with poor Nerv¨¦ you still have a backup, or multiple backups - have enough backups and you are functionally immortal, unless some catastrophe was to strike the Momentarium and destroy all your bodies at once.
Now since we have time travel the answer is obvious, when you have done something to earn an extra body a message is sent back to the time of your gestation and instead of doing 2 versions of you - a male and female, they add a version of the gender specified, most people do 50 / 50 gender types, that is what I have right now - 2 males, 2 females, but obviously if you got to be really powerful and were getting rewarded with extra bodies all the time you might start requesting a favored gender more often than not. But most people like to just stay 50 / 50 because it is what most people like, no reason to flaunt your preferences like you don''t care about the opinions of other people at all!
Anyway this is your friend Noiruzi Sangsung signing out and hoping my explanation of how bodies work here has cleared some things up for you, I hope you like my journal and leave comments because it will be a big plus for my grade that my writing was able to make an impression even on people from a far more primitive and exciting time than my own!
My Report On Time Travel Fictions
(this was the cover for my report, done using p.layers, one of the cool mental assist graphic programs from my time!)
Special Note: Sausalito says Image quality will probably be degraded for a bit because of time stream problems, which sucks I wanted to show you my dorm and my room which I have made up to look like dorm rooms from your time, as much as I could from remnants I scrounged aound the Momentarium.
I have a project this segment to do something that shows how your central preoccupation relates to time travel, this is a common thing we have to do, they are always throwing out "how it relates to time travel" projects, Nerv¨¦ calls it the "lazy curriculum strategy", but I figure it is probably pretty smart to get us always thinking about what our purpose is - to travel time and make sure everything trends in the correct way, as well as bringing back things to the Momentarium that the Momentarium needs.
Sausalito says the Momentarium is a harbor at the end of time, and all the merchant ships dock at our port, and unload their cargo, Nerv? said "no, we''re the pirates and the Momentarium is our Isle of Tortuga!" and then he did pulled out this sword he is always about with now (it''s his physical skill!) and struck with a point of the sword at the privates of the big statue along the Veldt where we were eating our lunch.
But obviously my project is easy because my preoccupation is reading / writing, there have been lots of different time travel books and ideas throughout the ages, and a lot in your time, so I wrote about those.
Since his preoccupation is theater Nerv¨¦ rewrote and staged a version of A Midsummer Night''s Dream using chrono-tricks for all the effects. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
Maybe I should write more about that in some other entry - I don''t want this journal just to be about me because that''s not what being a good friend is all about.
So my report is done, and I am turning it in today, it will be focused on some time travel stuff I found on some sites in your time through the monitor Sausalito set up , and also some things I watched in video archives, and of course cool stuff I found on your "internet" which is where I am publishing my journal!
I''m going to try to add the links to these sites to the chapter, this might be difficult to do because it is not just sending text through the time stream but also events such as mouse clicks and the link to interact with the browser''s user interface. Sausalito set that kind of thing up for me before so that it is automated to start the application and navigate into creating a new part, but this is probably going to be a lot more difficult - wish me luck! I''m going to try to do it but I can''t promise I succeed. If you don''t see the links it might take a while, ooh this is exciting - will it work..??
AAARGGH, it did not work. I can only add one external link at a time but there are several links I want to add. So I will add the most important link to the story but also write both the links I wanted to add here - the most important link was this one
https://qntm.org/time
which is to qntm.org which has a bunch of important but wrong ideas about time travel from your time. The other one was to a funny little article from a collective of writers which was a criticism of a time travel movie from your time named "About Time", I''ve monitored this movie, it''s sweet, totally wacky though, anyway qntm.org hated it and this article shows how qtnm.org was wrong!
https://medium.com/luminasticity/oops-someone-is-wrong-on-the-internet-2068c7dbf072
I''ve taken a screenshot of that page and sent it along, but it didn''t come out too good because obviously it needed to be screenshot in your time, transmitted to my time, and then back to yours - with the time stream problems we''ve been having there was bound to be some informational loss
Anyway it''s a funny article because whoever wrote it really goes into a lot of detail about how qtnm.org was wrong about this or that thing and maybe they were on drugs or not paying attention for other reasons. Like they take it as a personal insult that qtnm.org was wrong. Maybe one of the members of the collective of writers was the writer of the movie, I don''t know but it''s possible, that would explain the being really upset part, although I have noticed that people from your time are often really upset - which is one of the things that made me interested in your time and I think is so interesting - how does it feel to be really upset all the time!? Must be exciting and cool!
Next Chapter I will send you the full report to your time and also hopefully great news about my grade!
I am going to turn it in now - bye from
Time Travel Fictions Part 1 - Noiruzi Sangsung
(Hey, I am putting in my essay from school here in parts, as it is too long to be sent via just one transmission - I am of course putting it in because the extra credit I should get by having transmitted by essay on time travel fictions in the time of my destination, to the time of my destination, using my special project - is going to be pretty rip)
Time Travel in the period that is my chosen destination point - Earth, Human Civilization, 33.9mil+990000199199(*1000) is a well known and much beloved literary genre despite their inability to actually travel in time, or perhaps because of that very inability!
In this essay I am going to give an overview of some of the various trends in the genre, during my destination period.
For reference I will be using qntm.org, which is a website from your time that has really simple texts to read
As you can see there is something about time there, that word time is a link - like a thought link only now it is a word in a piece of paper or a word in somebody''s computer, and the person reading that word can interact with it via some tool that allows them to click on it, and that will go to a whole lot of other words somewhere else, this is called clicking on a link, and so if you were to "click" on time you would end up on another page that is very much like the previous one, with some differences, that looks like this
And you can see from this that the person or peoples who run qntm.org has two main concerns those being time formats, and how time travel work in the various popular entertainments of their own time.
I would say this is the primary resource for understanding how people in near pre-temporal civilization understood the possibility of time, and what their concerns were.
As an example qntm.org has a great deal of concern as to how time travelers would use language to communicate regarding their travels with each other, which would be a valid concern if time travelers did not all come from the Momentarium and thereby share the same context. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
Qntm.org also has thought a good deal about modelling how time travel would work, based on how it works in their fictions of the time, this is how I first found this site ( a site in the world of my intended destination is a computer that talks to other computers and lets the other computers have information to give to humans), because it was evidently a favorite of famous physicist and temporal engineer Poul Scherarcj, who in an interview with our MindPreservers division said this:
"Quantum dot org was always a favorite of mine back when I was a kid and first getting interested in time travel, it seemed like he (the author of that site) had really figured everything out.
Later on when I went to college and I met Evon all that stuff came back to me and we spent a lot of time talking it over and doing the math and figuring out how it would really have to function and how there were in fact divisions within the ideas about time through which the actual, underlying reality ran"
But qntm.org puts the types of time travel that can occur into three categories - these are:
1) Fixed History model - this assumes time cannot be changed, but it also gives examples where time is not changed because there are forces making sure that it is not changed, the way the Momentarium makes sure that the Momentarium will come to exist as it ought to.
2) Malleable History Model - this assumes time can be changed - this is sort of similar to how the world actually works but funny enough qntm.org does not like it and says "This doesn''t actually make a whole lot of logical sense. Scientific impartiality necessitates that every point in history be as significant as every other point, and chaos theory dictates that small changes to a highly complex system such as the Earth''s weather system can result in massive changes in the long term" which seems to have been the scientific consensus of how things worked at the time this was written.
3) Sensitive History model - obviously part of this was important to Evon Cantelwitz - it isn''t hard to see how the text "If you go back to before you were born and change history enough that you were never born, or worse, somebody else was born in your place (your sibling, by most definitions), you''re in trouble. But if you go back five minutes, who cares?" fits into Cantelwitz'' seminal paper "Topological Variance Inside Invariant Time"
4) Multiple History model - This is the model favored by qntm.org as explaining things that they see as "paradoxes" of time travel, note of course this is a fictional model meant to allow literary productions to deal with time travel, as understood by their time period, in a satisfactory manner, and not a mathematically rigorous model that allows such things as actual temporal vessels like the 9S-ybilia
(Picture of an 9S-ybilia orbiting Earth in the approximate time of my destination)
Having constructed his model of how time travel works in fiction of his time he sets out to categorize various movies and books using his critical framework, and that''s where he runs into my favorite kind of trouble:
A WRITER*S FIGHT
Time Travel Fictions Part 2 - Writers Fight
Time Travel Fictions Part 2 - Writer''s Fight
This continues on the transmission of my report on time travel fiction in your time my friends..
As I said qntm.org had defined a large typology to describe every potential time travel fiction - meaning really the fictions they were familiar with from their time - and then had used this typology to do analysis of many famous time travel narratives they were familiar with.
The did a good job, generally, and I would recommend that literary historians read these essays to understand the ways that people thought about time and the ways that they were wrong because this is coming from a top level analytical mind who also writes time travel fictions of their own!
But one of their essays made someone mad, this was an essay they wrote about the movie "About Time".
You see qntm.org absolutely hated this movie! But there was someone else who wrote in the same continuum as qntm.org that evidently liked the movie quite a lot as they had also written a review of it
This was written by a semi-anonymous writer, or a pair of semi-anonymous writers, in the same way I suppose as qntm.org is semi-anonymous. These writers are given the identifiers Agent 77 and Agent 19, which is because they were members of some sort of collective of visual artists, writers and musicians named Illuminati Ganga, although some descriptions I have read regarding their membership also mention assassins, criminals, and people who make living balloon animals - which was probably a very niche occupation back when they were a going concern - I''ve never actually read about it before them, so maybe they are just something that a few billionaire''s pay outrageous prices to own ( a billionaire is a person who commands a significant portion of the world''s resources in the time under discussion)
So when these guys found that qntm.org was dissing their favorite time travel movie they wrote back a really mean response!
I haven''t been able to watch all of the movie, because of the energy expenditures involved in getting the information from the time of my destination back to our time, but I have packaged a fragment that describes the movie which in the time of my destination is called a "Trailer", why I''m not sure as a trailer is generally something that follows a primary vehicle to carry a lot of excess baggage.
From what I have been able to make out though is that Illuminati Ganga''s criticisms are mainly correct, Qntm.org really didn''t seem to pay too much attention to the movie, causing them to miss or misinterpret several relevant plot points. Although Illuminati Ganga probably didn''t need to be that mean, but probably when you care about something you get mean in its defense, and probably also when you care about something you really pay attention to the plot points, which is why qntm.org missed some, because they didn''t care - because About Time is really the kind of time travel that qntm.org would hate and not care about - because About Time is magic based time travel, whereas qntm.org strongly prefers science based time travel.Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
This is funny because neither qntm.org or Illuminati Ganga seems to realize that there is this overarching typology that separates the types of time travel stories (although maybe Illuminati Ganga realizes this as they don''t seem to care as much about identifying the forms of time travel stories).
But at any rate qntm.org really likes his time travel to be science based.
Illuminati Ganga described scientific time travel movies like this in their first article on About Time:
Most time travel movies are about time, and about the in-universe rules the movie has made for how to tamper with time, how to make it work to your advantage, how to play little tricks with time and how to figure out the little tricks the movie is playing with time. Most time travel movies are tricky little puzzles that you need to sit there with a pen and paper to keep track of the various ways the movie is rearranging its narrative as it goes.
This is because most scientific time travel narratvies are concerned with essential aspects of time and time travel that they could logically infer would happen but did not have the math and theories to explain why it would and should work and thus, with an interest of science, these narratives are drawn to investigate what to them is inexplicable. The true scientific impulse.
Thus in the narratives that qntm.org prefers people often explain why "paradoxes" cannot happen, or try to take advantage of "paradoxes", a paradox is a literary trope that means that something cannot logically happen given the predicates of its happening, for example a common paradox one encounters in these works is the object created flex nihilo ( flex out of nothing) or what Cantelwitz often referred to as the "necessaries of time", those things that are created as side effects of the reality maintaining function of the 4 dimensional bounds constraining reality.
Time travel narrative with a scientific bent often do this, a future you comes back in time to give you the time machine and then you come back in time to give it to yourself at the end of your time travel adventures - where did the time travel machine come from? Nobody built it. The scientific minded had a big issue with the necessaries of time.
The narratives that are assuming a magical process allows the time travel do not spend as much effort in considering paradoxes, probably because magic is considered as providing a framework that exists at a higher level of power over reality than time, in the science qntm.org was familiar with time was the greatest power over reality, even if we can use a machine of some sort to travel through time the physics of time still determine reality and as such anything that seemed to violate it would call all sorts of logic into question, but in a magical narrative we implicitly put magic as a power greater than time, if something seems logically suspect the magic will fix it.
That said even though many narratives seem to be scientific in nature they only make some light nods towards science, and the various methods used to travel through time do not at all seem to match common scientific and engineering solutions to problems.
One of the most famous time travel narratives then was a serialized video show that involved an alien, who looked human, and traveled through all space and time in a box that looked like a special type of communications box that in fact was no longer familiar to anyone likely to watch the show, and which box was bigger on the inside than the outside because of having an idea they called a pocket dimension inside of it.
There was at no point any sort of regard to what the energy needs would be of such a mode of travel.
In fact, Illuminati Ganga also has their own time travel stories that I have not spent much effort on reading, as they seem to be primarily about a guy who wants to beat up somebody named Giddy Hayes because Giddy owes him a very small amount of money, and comes close to destroying reality at least every other weekend or so. But the method of time travel is a bathtub! Which definitely strikes me as being somewhere in the magic base for time travel category of stories.
In reality, it was not until Cantlewitz and Scherarcj that the world had a solid enough mathematical and physics basis to start producing realistic time travel fictions about 2 decades before the actual establishment of the first instance of the Momentarium.
Long after qntm.org was dead and Illuminati Ganga had disbanded, as far as I can determine from my research of their organization.
Until when I remain Noiruzi Sangsung!
Chill
In between classes we hang out, I bet that''s what you do to, unless you are not in classes anymore but have a job. I wonder what a job is like. I guess it is just like being an actual time agent for the Momentarium.
I''m not an actual time agent myself, but I have done tours and helped out which looks really good on my stats.
Looking good on the stats is the most important thing in the world!
Today we were hanging out at the quad, we go there a lot. Quad 78, because there are lots of quads around, but we just say the Quad because it''s closest to our dorms, a lot of people who go to this area are destined for your time because it''s a simulation of a downtown area, with some fountains, and some stairwells leading into buildings although the buildings aren''t like most of what you find around your time, the simulations only go so far, and a lot of things for skateboarding too, a couple half pipes, stone benches by the fountains, it''s nice. Your time really had some nice things, it''s pleasant to hang out in.
Nerv¨¦ who is supposed to go a bit before your time, to Shakespeare and London and all that, is a bit the odd one out here, but I guess he just likes hanging out with me and Sausalito more than he likes constantly preparing for his future, which I worry about, he already has the downside of only one body, he doesn''t focus that much, it could go bad.
Sausalito was talking to this girl from underclass - Animita Verit¨¦ - and they were drawing things on each others arms, constellations, fluid dynamics calculations, hearts, stuff like that.
I was practicing my skateboarding tricks as usual, and Nerv¨¦ was, I think partly to annoy me, talking only in iambic pentameter (which funny thing is I know a girl named Iambic, and a guy named Pentameter)
I''m not the only one that boards here, which is sort of fun because you can tell who has a particular time they are planning to visit by the skill they are working on, and even how close they are to going to that time or if they have been, for example that Iambic girl I told you about - she''s pretty smart in business hacks and crimes of your time, and she boards and she is here and her board has two stickers on them which she obviously picked up from your time.
One sticker says Alien Workshop with a gray Alien,
And the other is a Tardis - which is a time machine from one of your fictions! It has the words Bad Wolf on it which I don''t what means, I should ask her but I am sort of intimidated because she has an attitude and because she is also very skilled when I am total newb in our physical skill - that is skateboarding.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
Anyway these are both pretty funny because the Grays are (mostly) just us Time Travelers, generally main recon and data collection teams sent to do quick intelligence gathering on the temporal landscape, not concerned with integrating into the society for longer terms projects, and like I said the Tardis is an idea of a time machine in your time. I wrote about it in the last chapter, it''s basically one of those fantasy disguised as science things where the time machine is a big box that has an alternate dimension in it. And the guy who owns it is an alien too, but sometimes he''s a girl, so also a lot like us from the Momentarium because we have multiple bodies of both physical genders - but he only changes body when he dies although we could decide to change if we feel like it.
Damn, now I am starting to wonder if the person who wrote that show even knew any time travelers, the coincidences here are uncanny.
Thinking about that, and looking at her board as I''m doing a drop in off of the slope of the hill I lost my balance and fell off, damn, real smooth..Iambic looks over for a sec and gets a smile, yeah funny.
Of course Nerv¨¦ stands up and takes a posture like giving a speech on stage and says
"Boards and Boredom do not mix
For Noiruzi when she trips in tricks
Her mind elsewhere her thoughts are gone
Her eye go sideways she steps wrong.."
"Yeah, yeah" I said, getting up "thanks for the audience when I bomb"
Nerv¨¦ gave me a hand up as I climbed up the side of the half pipe.
"You, dear Noiruzi, always bomb with such aplomb, by my god I must applaud."
Sausalito shouted from the bench she was sitting at "I swear you rhyme one more time I''ll lose my mind"
I flipped her off which is an insult that you could also use to your friends from your time, Nerv¨¦ bit his thumb at her, which is a thing where you put your thumb on your front teeth and then flick it out which was popular in the time of his intended destination.
Why? Not sure.
I can sort of understand the flipping off thing because the middle finger is supposed to imply an erection although when I''ve been in my male body having one of those was generally a good time so that is also strange, I guess flipping the thumb on the teeth is supposed to imply you have some food in your mouth and you are flicking it at them? It is a pretty weird insult. Maybe all insults are weird. Especially these friendly insults.
I saw then that Iambic was walking over "Be cool" I said to Nerv¨¦ under my breath, he rolled his eyes. Then she stopped and she was looking to the side and she had an expression on her face that was at the same time sad, and angry, and maybe scared, and she turned and walked away.
I turned to look where she had looked, and it was Malburger, the meanest teacher and top level time agent, he was looking around and then he saw me, and he motioned with his finger as if to say I want to talk to you
The Conversation
BIG NEWS PEOPLE!
You''ll remember last chapter I was in the quad chilling and that cool girl , Iambic Neopenses was coming over to talk to me and instead Malburger Bombfrazz the mean teacher showed up and motioned for me to walk with him.
So I did. Darn it!
I left my board and walked up the chalky white steps to him, Nerv¨¦ looked at him with the absolute hatred he definitely should feel, and he looked at me half pissed off I was going to talk to him (which what can I do!? He''s a teacher and a time agent!) and half sad for me having to go through talking to him, which I totally get because it is so unpleasant.
Except this time it wasn''t very unpleasant, usually he is mean and sarcastic but this time he was nice. Sometimes you forget what a kind and nice face he has because of all the meanness, but here is showed through. We walked up outside of the quad, along the side-paths that led down to the sports arena and open air gyms.
Malburger looked like he had come from the gym himself, he was wearing dark training clothes, and his silver time agent pendent hung down on his front. As we walked he talked and his voice was warm.
"I see your friend Nerv¨¦ is still angry"
"I don''t know, maybe I think it just hurts him a bit"
"Of course, I would expect it to hurt him. It was a horrible thing that happened" Malburger smiled warmly at me as we paused in front of the large Ayhua office building the time agents used in this sector of the Momentarium.
"But that''s not what I''ve come to talk to you about. What I''ve come to talk to you about is important and concerns..." here he tapped the pendent on his chest in the center of the lightning bolt that crossed the Tower representing the knowledge of the Ayhua significantly
Uh-oh, this was serious
"..Illuminati Ganga"
Or maybe not.
"What?" I asked, because that is something you say when you are really surprised.
"What do you know about Illuminati Ganga?"
"Uhm, they were an organization of artists and writers on Earth, Human Civilization, 33.9mil - 3plus - I can look up the exact coordinates if you need? They seemed to have some size to them but not sure how big, my initial study showed some variation in the time stream. They wrote some time travel stories, and some essays attacking other time travel writers of their time, as well as poetry and made music and did performance art. The usual kind of thing. It''s in my report for Time Travel Fictions in relation to my central preoccupation this segment" Big smile to show how happy I am to be helpful.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
He smiles back, he is appreciative of my helpful attitude.
"Yes, you know, Noiruzi, I am the only one who noticed anything about these artists, and then you, shortly after me, that makes you pretty smart" nod of approval from him, appreciative smile from me of receiving approval from someone that is big conceited dorkbag (is that the right phrase?)
"But you''re wrong about one thing, or I should say, have an incomplete understanding - they don''t just write stories about time travel"
Holy Macguffin! I could tell by the way he said "write stories" that he meant they actually had their own time travel tech, which first that would have been nearly a century before really usable time travel tech was established (capable of moving people for significant amounts of time and space - because if you are moving someone more than a few weeks you better be moving them in space too or accidents are almost certain to happen), so that was huge. Huge but scarcely believable.
"But how, their stories are that it''s a bathtub they''re traveling in?!"
"I don''t know that part, but it is sure they really are capable of traveling in time, and obviously we need to find out how"
"You mean ... we the Momentarium, or we you and I .."
"Actually by we in this case I primarily mean you, Illuminati Ganga may have importance but it is still pretty minor importance, but should be deal with, so here''s the deal"
He turned so that the sunlight was framing him dramatically as he spoke
"You''re on a special project now, you get a reduced class schedule, this is a primary project, meaning that as well as scholarly credit you will be earning all sorts of bonuses - bodies and all that. You can gather a team, up to 8 people, I''m sure I already know some of whom you will pick and I of course approve. All approval for your activities will be funneled through me. Time missions for data gathering will be possible - within reason. You will have offices here in this building, plenty of room. Get you out of the dorms. "
"Our task?"
"Find out everything about Illuminati Ganga, their time travel capabilities, what their plans are, the usual drill for tracking potential enemies and divergences of The Momentarium, I''m guessing you accept this task, but I''ll ask just to be sure. " This was said somewhat drily, and definitely, it would have been absurd to refuse. This was big.
"Of course! I.."
"Good! Your offices are the 4th floor, the whole floor other than hallway L which is given to building maintenance. It has already been keyed to your palm, you have admin rights and can approve others, although of course I may un-approve at some point if I deem necessary. Move in and begin work immediately, by which I mean tomorrow is somewhat late. You also have full Agentful access to libraries, although special collection requests must go through my office. Hope to hear on some amazing progress on this soon" nod of dismissal on his part.
He turned and left.
Damn.. offices, got to research a real opposing time traveling group... we could earn extra bodies. Now I just have to break it to Nerv¨¦ who we''ll be working for.
For now, Goodbye from your friend who is me - Noiruzi Sangsung
A Quick Pause For The Conveying of Important Technical Information
That image I took above is a clip from Illuminati Ganga''s instagram account. Here is the full image
Gee, that gives me the shivers. I mean they don''t even try to hide it, it says right there "Illuminati Ganga IS Pure Evil" who even is like that?!? Why would you sound so proud of being bad. It makes me sad for these people from long ago who anyway are all dead now, but also happy that they''re all dead now, because they were bad people, and proud and also sort of scared because maybe we will be the ones who end up making them all dead, what with the investigation we have been told to conduct into them.
Of course you remember the investigation we were told to do, and how Malburger gave us some cool swanky offices in the Ayhua building near our favorite quad, well he gave them to me but that means it is me and the gang.
We should have a cool name for our gang, since we aren''t started up yet I will come up with a name myself and hopefully we get a better name later - I will call us the Momentarians.
OK It''s not super cool, and it sounds sort of dorky especially when you put it up a name like Illuminati Ganga which is a whole organization full of doctors, writers, artists, musicians and evidently a lot of other stuff so obviously they ended up making up a cool name for themselves, because the probably had hundreds of people contributing to the name and right now I just have me (because I haven''t asked the rest of the Momentarians yet what they wanted to be called)
Anyway I have some important technical information, since what we''re going to be doing is going to involve a lot of analysis of these Illuminati Ganga we are going to need some place to hold resources in your time, because it will just be easier to keep things there than to transfer them here etc.
Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.
and we might need to add a lot, so Sausalito had the brilliant idea we would have a site somewhere else and link to individual pages of the journal and that site could have anything on it!!
The url of that site is https://noiruzi.neocities.org/ and is the external link associated with this story, and from now on in the individual chapters there will be a page on the site with the same name as the chapter and a link to all relevant information that you can follow!
When I got back from talking with Malburger and told Sausalito and Nerv¨¦ what had happened the reactions were what you''d expect, Sausalito was at first all excited, because what a big project, and she was also like we need more people than just us three and I was like right we need to get people, but then we could see that Nerv¨¦ was against it - just because it was through Malburger but I said
"Don''t you see what it means Nerv¨¦, it means new bodies, it means you can have more than one body, it means that you won''t be always worrying something happens to your one body that is left. It''s a good thing!"
And it was weird, because Nerv¨¦ hesitated and gazed down at his feet and his face was kind of dark, the way it is when he is mad about something but shy to say it. And I really thought he was going to refuse, which would have been crazy! And you could see Sausalito was uncomfortable because she was worrying the same thing.
And I said "Please Nerv¨¦, we need you" and he did a theatrical sigh like he was in one of those plays he is always going on about, and he said "Of course I''m in, it would be silly not to do it. It''s going to be great"
So that''s it, watch out Illuminati Ganga because Noiruzi Sangsung and the Momentarians are coming for you!
First Official Meetup!
This is me again! Noiruzi! And we''ve moved into those cool offices Malburger promised us, and it''s me, Nerv¨¦, and Sausalito, but Sausalito also went out and recruited some other people because if this is as big and important as Malburger says then we will need more people.
We essentially need at least 3-4 more people, because we need to have a data collection / time extraction team of our very own that we can send to other times - including yours - and gather data on Illuminati Ganga and their activities and do all the normal stuff like kidnap people and extract or implant memories as needed.
When you''re fighting against really bad people like Illuminati Ganga you need resources and organization!
So here is our list of people we''ve gathered and their skill sets - because it is important to have good skill sets, that allows you to organize stuff
ME, Noiruzi Sangsung: Preoccupation is Reading / Writing, language is English, obviously most of us have that language, my main physical skill is skateboarding, and my time period focus is your times - what you call the 21st Century! When I come to your time my story will probably be that I am a content writer online, or maybe even an author, or a librarian, something involved in the reading writing aspect of things.
Sausalito Bratfirst: Preoccupation is Computer Science - main focus on technology of the last bit of the 20th century early bit of the 21st, time period is of course that of main focus, so theoretically her and my time period overlap a bit. Physical skill is rock climbing.
Nerv¨¦: Preoccupation is Theater of Shakespearean times, language is English, and some old dialects, time period is that of main focus, physical skill is sword fighting. Probably Nerv¨¦ shouldn''t be in this project, because he isn''t an expert in the period, but he''s generally so smart I figure he''ll be a help anyway, and since Illuminati Ganga are time travelers it doesn''t mean we won''t have to fight them in times outside our focus time periods. Really the reason I have him though is because everyone involved in this project will earn extra bodies and so he can earn back the body he lost. Probably that''s why Malburger let him onto the project, because of maybe having guilt feelings for how Nerv¨¦ lost his female body in the first place.
Iambic Hipswerve: Preoccupation is hacking and business, physical skill is skateboarding - same as mine ??????, time period also the same ??????
Jamb¨®n Pentameter: Preoccupation is Math physical skill long distance swimming, Sausalito knows this guy and says he is super smart and he has already done a bunch of missions in the middle of the 20th century, his Erd?s number is 1, which is supposed to be an important number to have and he has already done quite a few time missions - deep cover not just extractions. His language is Italian but he also knows some English, one reason that I got him on the team, aside from his already having done missions, is that Illuminati Ganga seems to have some Italian connections from what our data drills have found.
Animita Verit¨¦: Her preoccupation is design, both graphic design and industrial design so she should come in handy when dealing with the artistic side of Illuminati Ganga, especially if we need to infiltrate, her physical skill is an ancient martial art called Capoeira, her language is also English but she has a side language of Portuguese, probably won''t come in useful. I think she and Sausalito like each other, I mean like like ??????!!
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
So we''re all meeting today in our new offices in the Ayhua building near quad 78! Which is so cool to be near our favorite quad, we''re high up in the building and can look out over the quads but also further out over the city.
The windows are Equilit, which is a kind of intelligent glass we have in our time, actually the glass has millions of little silica organisms in it that have a daily lifespan, there are not that many and most of them are dormant as the dawn hits the side of the building, as the sun builds during the day they organisms reproduce keeping always an equal amount of sunlight coming in. Then as the day starts to wane they die off, having overpopulated their environment, and thus again allowing only the right amount of sunlight in.
At night cleaning crews come in and empty out the dead organisms which will be sent to form the protein bars we use for nutrition here in the well-organized and superior future.
For today''s first meeting I have gathered some flowers from the arboretum, I had to get special permission for that of course because here flowers are super-regulated, at least those from the arboretum are, because if they were to get out they might wreak ecological havoc, not being suited to our time. We have a big round table made out of a single block of obsidian, and in the center I have the flowers all strewn about as a powerful aesthetic effect. Pink Roses. And in the golden half light of the Equilit windows at dawn it looks especially beautiful.
The office is already crowded even though nobody is here yet, because there is a lot of data on Illuminati Ganga that has been sent over, and more arriving all the time, in the big stone tablets that we use for superior data storage - many if not all of these tablets have not been digitized yet, which means we will have to digitize ourselves to figure out what we''re dealing with.
Cool projects are always hard projects, and this one is mega-cool.
So here I am, waiting for my team, until next time
??????????????????
