《Monsters Among Men》 Chapter 1 Have you ever dreamed of wanting to become a hero? I''m sure you must have thought that at least once when you were a kid. I remember those days when I was a kid, watching all those superhero shows and dreaming of soaring through the skies, saving the day, and battling against the forces of evil. All the other kids my age were always talking about how they wanted to be a hero. My best friend and I would spend hours glued to the TV, watching those shows. We never got tired of it - we''d act them out in the living room, running around and pretending to have incredible powers. The other neighborhood kids would join in, and we''d all take turns being the hero. But I didn''t feel the same way as them. What I admired in those shows were the monsters those heroes fought. Yes. The monsters. I don''t remember when it started, but I could never forget the first time I saw them - their sharp fangs bared and eyes burning with a primal ferocity. I know I''m different from the other kids, so I keep my love of monsters a secret. They all dream of being heroes, swooping in to save the day. But not me - I''m fascinated by the monsters. I don''t think the monsters are "bad" - they''re just driven by their most basic instincts, fighting to survive like any other wild creature. But I know the other kids, and even my own parents, would never understand. They''d think I''m weird. Still, I know this is what I want to become. To be like those monsters. And it''s a dream I continue to chase after to this day.

BEEP BEEP BEEP I hear my alarm blaring from my phone and quickly silence it. Sighing, I climb out of bed. I slip on my tailored blue blazer and grey pants, then top it off with a crisp white shirt and a red tie. Heading downstairs, I prepare a simple breakfast of toast and eggs. As I take the last bite, a loud knock echoes through the house. "Eddie! You awake?! Hurry up! We are going to be late!" I open the door to find my childhood friend, Miyuki, her red hair flowing behind her in a ponytail. "Do you have to be so loud in the morning?" I ask, already knowing the answer. Miyuki grins. "Of course, it''s the only way for you to wake up." I look at the girl in front of me - Miyuki Shibata, my childhood friend. We''ve been neighbors and best friends since we were kids. Our parents hit it off, and we''ve always been close. I remember when we were little, how Miyuki would drag me outside to play, no matter how much I protested. She''d always find a way to get me excited and involved, even if I was reluctant at first. That infectious energy of hers hasn''t changed a bit over the years. She''s still the same spirited, enthusiastic Miyuki I''ve known all this time. I walk alongside Miyuki as we head to school, the morning sun peeking through the trees. "Are your parents still not back yet?" "No, they are still aboard working. They won''t be back for at least a few months." "I see; then, do you want to live with us for a while? It will be just like old times. Mom would also like it if you stayed over." I grimace at the thought. "And hear about you talk about Ember Nova again? No, thank you." Miyuki pouts, grabbing my arm and shaking it playfully. "Mou~ you''re no fun. Come on~ stay over tonight~" I firmly shake my head. "No!" We arrive at the imposing gates of Valor Academy, its towering architecture and pristine grounds exuding an air of prestige. Students in their uniforms bustle about, chatting excitedly as they make their way to their classes. I follow Miyuki as we make our way to our classroom. Once we step inside, Miyuki''s other friends immediately start chatting her up. I take my usual seat at the far end of the room, near the window. Miyuki''s always been one of the most popular kids at school. She''s got the whole package - straight A''s, athletic prowess, and looks that turn heads. The girls all want to be her, and the guys are constantly vying for her attention. I settle into my desk, content to observe from the sidelines as Miyuki holds court with her adoring fans. I hear the girls chattering excitedly around Miyuki. "Ooh, Miyuki, I love your new hair clip! Where did you get it?" Miyuki grins. "Thanks! My mom got it for me last weekend. Isn''t it cute?" "It matches your uniform so well! You always look so put together." "And did you see the latest Ember Nova movie? I can''t get enough of her!" The girls erupt into giggles, discussing the latest hero trends and fashion. I tune out their conversation, focusing instead on the view outside the window. As the chatter dies down, our teacher walks in and calls the class to order. "Alright, everyone, settle down and take your seats," she says, her authoritative tone cutting through the chatter. "We have a lot to cover today, so let''s get started." The class falls silent as the teacher launches into the lesson. Time seems to crawl by as she drones on, but eventually, she shifts the focus to history. "As you know, hundreds of years ago, babies with a unique set of powers started manifesting around the world," the teacher begins. "It started with a child in Africa who could create water with his hands. More babies with powers started appearing around the world from then on." "There was panic in the beginning, and people thought they were monsters," she continues. "However, scientists have found that these people with powers have a unique set of genetic traits found in their genes, which gives them superpowers." "These people are now called S.U.P.E.R. (Specialized Users of Powers Enhancing Reality)," the teacher explains. "Currently, they are 30% of the population around the world." "The emergence of S.U.P.E.R.s also gave rise to supernatural crime," the teacher explains. "Many of the crimes committed by those with powers proved extremely difficult for regular law enforcement to apprehend. However, other S.U.P.E.R.s began to appear, taking it upon themselves to stop these criminals." She pauses, adjusting her glasses. "These vigilantes gradually became recognized as heroes, forming an organization to protect the public from those who would abuse their powers. Their efforts have been crucial in maintaining order and safety in our society." I sigh, glancing out the window at the bustling school grounds. Heroes have become a popular profession in this world. Ember Nova, the idol my friend Miyuki adores, is one of many celebrated heroes. She''s one of the top heroes in the country. These top Heroes are revered and feared. Their exploits are made into films, TV shows, and an endless array of merchandise. That''s why so many SUPERs, like Miyuki, have come to Valor Academy - it''s a prestigious school that trains the next generation of heroes. Miyuki is a SUPER herself, with her own unique set of powers, and she''s enrolled in the Hero course. As for me, I''m just here to accompany my childhood friend. While Miyuki is pursuing her heroics, I''m taking the general education track. I may not have the same aspirations as her, but I''m content to support her in whatever way I can. The teacher''s lecture on the history of SUPERs and the rise of heroism fades into the background as I gaze out the window, lost in my own thoughts. The world of heroes and powers has not interested me, even if it''s not the path I''ve chosen for myself. But as long as Miyuki is chasing her dreams, I''ll be right here, cheering her on. The lunch bell rings, and I head to my locker, eager to grab my textbooks for the next class. As I open the door, it suddenly slams against me, causing me to stumble back. I turn to see Kazuya standing nearby, his messy blonde hair and arrogant blue eyes making him look every bit the delinquent. He''s the last person I want to see right now. Kazuya is a bully and a prick. He''s always targeting me, finding new ways to make my life miserable. "Watch where you''re going, nerd," Kazuya sneers, his tone dripping with contempt. I resist the urge to snap back, knowing it will only make things worse. Kazuya thrives on getting a reaction out of me, and I refuse to give him the satisfaction. Instead, I simply gather my books and close my locker, doing my best to ignore his taunting gaze. "What''s the matter, Logan? Cat got your tongue?" Kazuya jeers, stepping closer to me. I was about to confront that jerk Kazuya when suddenly I felt an invisible force shove me against the wall. Kazuya laughed, his arrogant smirk plastered all over his face. The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. "What''s wrong, Logan? Feeling a little pinned up against the wall?" he taunted. That Kazuya - he''s got the power of telekinesis, being a SUPER and all. He thinks just because he has these powers, he can push people around. Well, he may want to be some big-shot hero, but I doubt his reasons are anything noble. All he cares about is stroking his own ego. I grit my teeth, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me rattled. "What do you want, Kazuya?" "Oh, nothing much," he sneered, his blue eyes gleaming with malice. "Just putting the pathetic little sidekick in his place." Sidekick? I may not have powers like Miyuki, but I''m no one''s sidekick. I open my mouth to give him a piece of my mind, but before I can, a familiar voice cuts through the tension. "Hey, what''s going on here?" I turn to see Miyuki standing there, her eyes widening in alarm as she takes in the scene. "Kazuya, let him go!" Miyuki demands, her voice sharp and authoritative. Kazuya''s smirk only widens as he maintains his telekinetic hold on me. "What''s the matter, Shibata? Don''t like seeing your little friend get put in his place?" Miyuki''s expression hardens. "I said, let him go. This isn''t funny." "Oh, I think it''s pretty funny," Kazuya taunts, his blue eyes glinting with malice. "Maybe you should teach your sidekick friend to stay out of my way." I watch as flames suddenly burst from Miyuki''s legs, and the floor beneath her feet starts to smoke. I know her power is to emit flames from her legs - she can shoot them like fireballs or use them for propulsion, allowing her to fly. Miyuki is incredibly skilled with her abilities, and I''ve seen firsthand what she''s capable of. "Kazuya, let him go. Now." Her voice is low and serious, leaving no room for argument. Kazuya''s smirk falters slightly, sensing the shift in Miyuki''s demeanor. He pauses, considering his options, before finally releasing his telekinetic hold on me. I stumble forward, catching my balance as the invisible force dissipates. "Tch, whatever." Kazuya scoffs, turning to walk away. "This isn''t over, Logan." Miyuki steps closer, her eyes still on Kazuya as he retreats down the hall. "I''m fine, Miyuki," I say, adjusting my glasses. "I could have handled Kazuya on my own, you know." Miyuki frowns, crossing her arms. "Don''t act so tough, Eddie. You know how he gets." I sigh, glancing down the hall where Kazuya disappeared. "It''s the same old with that guy. He''s just trying to get a rise out of me." I sigh, glancing down the hall where Kazuya disappeared. "It''s the same old with that guy. He''s just trying to get a rise out of me." Kazuya has been bullying me since we were first years, and Miyuki has had to save me at certain times. But I''m not afraid of that jerk. I know how to stand up for myself, and that seems to annoy Kazuya. It also didn''t help that I''m the top scorer in the school in terms of grades. Kazuya loves to flaunt his powers, thinking he can push people around just because he''s a SUPER with a powerful ability. The school also turns a blind eye to his actions to a certain extent because of his talent and potential as a future hero. If people think he is hero material, then they must be blind. "Let''s go grab some lunch," Miyuki suggests. I nod in agreement, and we make our way to the cafeteria

School had just ended, and I was about to go home, but suddenly, I felt someone''s arms wrap around my neck. "Eddie! Come with me. There are new Ember Nova merch. Let''s go buy them!" I sighed. "Miyuki, you don''t have to drag me to buy your merch. I''m busy." "Stop lying. Every time, you just go home and hole up for days. You only come out for school. I''m sure you''re just lazing about in your house. I''m worried you''ll become a hermit in the future. So, come on! Let''s go!" "Ah! Miyuki! Don''t pull so hard!" I exclaimed, trying to pry her off. Miyuki yanks me along as we head to the store. We see a long line of people wait to buy the new Ember Nova merch. I sigh, knowing I''ll be stuck here for a while. "The line''s way too long, Miyuki. I think I''ll just wait over there," I said, nodding towards an empty spot off to the side. But Miyuki refused to budge; she held onto my sleeve firmly. "No way, Eddie! You''re lining up with me, whether you like it or not." I let out an exasperated sigh, resigning myself to my fate as Miyuki dragged me into the queue. As our turn came, Miyuki was getting excited. "Hee hee~ It''s almost our turn." "I see¡" I''m on my phone, scrolling through different animal species and reading about their biology. Suddenly, a news alert pops up - there''s a robber on the run nearby. That''s concerning. It was our turn to buy, so I quickly put my phone away,. Miyuki gazed at the array of Ember Nova merchandise, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Waa~ What should I pick? What are you getting, Eddie?" I shrugged. "I don''t know. I''m not getting anything." Miyuki pouted. "You''re no fun." She tapped her chin, then her face lit up. "Okay! Let''s get everything!" I let out an exasperated sigh as Miyuki began piling up armfuls of Ember Nova goods. Her devotion to the hero was unparalleled, and I have to be the one carrying most of it back. I suddenly spotted a massive figure barreling down the street straight towards us. "Look out!" I cried, yanking Miyuki out of harm''s way just as the thing smashed through the wall. "Are you okay?" Miyuki blinked, a little shaken. "Yeah, I''m fine. What was that?" Miyuki and I turned around to see a hulking figure with skin-like, gleaming silver metal barreling towards us, clutching bulging sacks of cash. I realized he was the robber from the news alert. "Get out of my way!" the thief bellowed, his voice booming. People scattered in all directions, screaming and ducking for cover. "Miyuki! We should run!" "No! I''m staying." "Don''t be ridiculous. We need to get to safety. A hero should arrive anytime now." "Then I''ll stall him until a hero arrives." Miyuki takes off her shoes and starts running towards the robber. "Hey, Miyuki! Come back!" Miyuki started sprinting toward the robber, and she used her powers. Miyuki''s legs caught on fire, and using her fire, she propelled herself towards the robber. "Hey, metal man! Look at me!" The thief whirled around, his metal skin gleaming. "Hah?! Get out of my way, brat! Or I''ll squash you like a pancake!" Miyuki''s legs erupt in flames, propelling her forward with incredible speed. She leaps into the air, spinning and kicking out with her fiery limbs. "Hrah!" Miyuki cries, her flames lashing out at the robber. The metal man roars, his thick skin shimmering as he raises his bulky arms to block Miyuki''s assault. The flames seem to have little effect, merely scorching his metallic surface. "Is that all you got, little girl?" the thief bellows, swinging a massive fist at Miyuki. Miyuki darts to the side, narrowly avoiding the powerful blow that smashes the ground where she just stood. She retaliates, firing a barrage of fireballs at the robber''s face. The metal man grunts in pain, staggering back as the flames singe his eyes. He swipes blindly, his metal claws raking the air. "You little pest!" he roars, swinging wildly. I watch, transfixed by the intensity of the battle. Miyuki''s agility and fire powers are the only things keeping her from being crushed by the robber''s brute strength and metal skin. I watch, transfixed by the intensity of the battle. Miyuki''s agility and fire powers are the only things keeping her from being crushed by the robber''s brute strength and metal skin. Suddenly, the metal man swings his massive fist, creating a shockwave that knocks Miyuki off balance. Before she can recover, he lunges forward, his clawed hand poised to strike. I gasp in fear, bracing myself for the impact, but just as the robber''s hand reaches Miyuki, a blur of blue and black intercepts the blow. A towering figure in a striking tiger-themed costume stands between Miyuki and the metal man, his muscular frame radiating power. "That''s enough for you, criminal!" I watched in awe as the blue figure effortlessly blocked the Metal Man''s attack with his powerful hand. This guy was seriously built, his muscular frame and athletic physique reminding me of a professional wrestler. His costume was a deep blue bodysuit with bold black tiger stripes, and he had sleek black and silver arm guards that added to his intimidating presence. I recognized him as Blue Stripes, a relatively new hero in the area, but one who had quickly gained a lot of popularity recently. From what I knew, Blue Stripes possessed incredible super strength and abilities akin to those of a tiger. He was definitely the right hero to have show up and put a stop to this metal-skinned criminal. The Metal Man lets out a frustrated roar. "Get out of my way! This money is mine!" "I can''t let you continue your rampage. It''s time to face justice." With that, the hero launches himself at the Metal Man, his movements swift and precise. He lands a series of powerful blows, each strike echoing with the sound of metal against flesh. The Metal Man staggers back, growling in anger and pain. "Grr... You''ll pay for that!" the villain bellows, swinging his massive fists in a desperate attempt to land a hit. But Blue Stripes is too fast, too agile. He ducks and weaves, dodging the attacks with ease. Then, with a sudden burst of speed, he leaps into the air, his leg muscles coiling with power. Miyuki and I watch in awe as he delivers a devastating kick straight to the Metal Man''s chest, sending the villain crashing to the ground in a shower of sparks and debris. I watch as the metal-skinned villain collapses to the ground, his shiny armor reverting to normal flesh. Blue Stripes stands over him, triumphant. I watch in awe as Blue Stripes delivers a devastating blow, sending the metal-skinned villain crashing to the ground. The villain''s shimmering armor fades, revealing his normal skin. Blue Stripes stands tall, addressing the crowd. "Justice is served!" he proclaims, his voice booming with confidence. The crowd erupted in cheers all around us. "Alright, Blue Stripes!" "You showed that metal creep who''s boss!" "Way to go, hero!" Blue Stripes takes in the crowd''s cheers and waves at them. "Thank you! Thank you!" I watch in awe as Blue Stripes strides over to Miyuki, "You showed a lot of bravery out there, young lady," he says, his deep voice laced with admiration. "But leave the villains to heroes like me from now on, okay?" "Yes! Thank you for saving me. I just wanted to help people¡" "HAHAHA, that is good. I''m sure you will make a fine hero someday." I watch as the police arrive and swarm the downed metal-skinned robber, quickly apprehending him. Blue Stripes speaks with the officers, likely providing details about the incident. I turn to Miyuki, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Come on, Miyuki, I think it''s time we head home. We didn''t get your Ember Nova merch after all." "Aww, I really wanted those new items." "Don''t worry, I''m sure there will be other opportunities. For now, let''s just get out of this mess." As Miyuki and I headed home, I couldn''t help but lecture her about her reckless actions. "Miyuki, you can''t just run into danger like that. What if Blue Stripes hadn''t shown up in time?" I scolded. "I''m sorry, Eddie. I just wanted to help." She clasped her hands together, giving me her most adorable pout. "Forgive me?" I let out a long sigh, unable to stay upset with her for long. "Fine, but please promise you won''t do something that dangerous again." Miyuki tilted her head, her ponytail swaying. "I can''t promise that, Eddie. I want to be a hero just like Ember Knight!" I could only shake my head and sigh even deeper at her unwavering determination. I let out a long sigh as Miyuki and I arrived at our neighboring homes. "Well, this is where we part ways," I say. "I''ve got some things I need to take care of at home." Here''s the text rewritten without action beats and dialogue tags, in first-person perspective: "You don''t want to come over to my place for a bit?" "Thanks, but I think I''ll just head inside. I''ll see you tomorrow, okay?" "Alright, Eddie. See you tomorrow!" She waves goodbye and heads into her house, leaving me to enter my own. As I closed the door behind me, I was greeted by silence. I''ve been living on my own for a while now since mom and dad are living overseas. That attack from the villain was a close call today. I wished Miyuki wasn''t so reckless, but I can''t fault her for the way she is. I never really related to Miyuki''s liking for heroes. I''m not all that excited about them. I head to the bathroom to clean myself up a bit. After changing into fresh clothes, I open the closet where I keep my collection of monster action figures. I''ve had a lot of them since I started collecting when I was a kid. I look at them wistfully, then close the closet door. I headed towards a hidden panel in the wall of my room and pressed my hand against it. The wall slid open, revealing a keypad and scanner. I quickly punched in my password and scanned my eye. With a quiet hiss, the wall parted to reveal a circular staircase leading down. I descended the steps, entering my private laboratory. The space was filled with an array of scientific equipment - PCR machines, centrifuges, microscopes, and more. Many of the instruments were of my own design and construction. I conducted my research here, something I kept hidden even from my parents and my best friend, Miyuki. For years, I had been working tirelessly on my life''s passion project. In the center of the lab stood a large glass tank filled with liquid. And floating within it was my creation - a towering, reptilian creature with dark armored skin, sharp claws, and a maw full of jagged teeth. It was nearly 7 feet tall, its long tail swaying gently in the fluid. I approached the tank, gazing upon my masterpiece with a sense of pride and wonder. "Hello, my child," I murmured, placing my hand against the cool glass. "It won''t be long now." Chapter 2 "Ahh~ You''re so beautiful~. Don''t worry; it is almost finished. You will be able to awaken soon." I can''t stop staring at my creation in awe. After countless hours of painstaking research and studying genetics, it''s finally come to life. I took a common lizard as the foundation and edited its DNA, growing it and splicing in the genetic material of various other animals. It was a complex and costly endeavor, so I had to take on some "side businesses" to fund the project. But it was all worth it - my creation, which I''ve named Talon, is a marvel to behold. The way the scales shift and shimmer as it moves is simply mesmerizing. I can see the power coiled within its muscular frame, ready to be unleashed. Its eyes gleam with a keen intelligence that belies its reptilian nature. I feel a surge of pride knowing that I''m the one who brought this incredible creature into existence. As Talon lets out a low, rumbling growl, I can''t help but smile. My vision has become a reality, and it is magnificent. When I first started this project, I had considered the possibility of it going on a rampage. During my early experiments, I mixed the DNA of a lizard and a rat, creating a creature about the size of my palm that moved only on pure instinct. Those initial trials were a mixed bag. Most ended up with similar results - small, mindless beasts driven solely by their primal urges. I tried increasing the size of their brains, which helped a bit, making them less reliant on instinct. But their intelligence was still quite limited. I tried splicing in some human DNA, hoping it would make the creature more intelligent. And it did help - the thing''s cognitive abilities were a bit better than the earlier experiments. But it still had the mental capacity of a newborn baby. Not exactly what I was going for. "Welcome back! Welcome back!" I turn to see one of my earlier creations. "Hey there, Cliff." Cliff is a unique specimen - a fusion of lizard, parrot, and human DNA that I created during one of my experiments before. Four scaly legs, two vibrant wings, and a touch of human intelligence in those beady eyes. A real marvel of modern science, if I do say so myself. "How''s it going, buddy?" I ask, reaching out to give his feathered head a gentle scratch. Cliff lets out a contented chirp, nuzzling my hand. "Miss me while I was out?" My little avian-reptilian hybrid tilts his head curiously, as if pondering the question. Then, with a flap of his wings, he hops up onto my shoulder, settling there comfortably. I chuckle, giving his back a few affectionate pats. "I''ll take that as a yes." "Eddie, Cliff wants food, food!" I chuckle and head over to Cliff''s enclosure, retrieving a few dead mice and some hard-boiled eggs. "Here you go, little buddy. Eat up." Cliff''s beady eyes light up as I place the food in front of him. "Ooh, yum yum! Cliff likes mice and eggs!" He snatches up the mice eagerly, gulping them down with relish. Then he pecks at the eggs, letting out contented chirps between bites. "Mmm, so good! Eddie, thank you!" Cliff says, his voice a delightful mix of parrot-like squawks and childlike wonder. "You''re welcome, Cliff." I gaze upon Talon with a surge of pride. After countless failed experiments, this reptilian creature is my greatest creation yet. I combined the DNA of a lizard, human, and various other animals to craft this marvel. While Talon lacks advanced intelligence and consciousness, that was intentional. I''m currently making a device that will allow me to transfer my own consciousness into him. Once complete, I will be able to control Talon directly, fulfilling my lifelong dream of becoming a monster. I''ve already installed a special receiver on Talon''s brain, ready to interface with my consciousness transfer device. The anticipation builds as I imagine experiencing the world through the eyes of my creation, wielding its formidable strength and capabilities as my own. This is the culmination of my obsession with creatures like Godzilla and King Kong. No longer will I simply admire them from afar - I will become one with my own monstrous creation, blurring the line between man and beast. The possibilities are thrilling to contemplate. Soon, Talon and I will be one. My dream is finally within reach. Bzz Bzz I suddenly got a notification from my phone. [Mom: Hey Eddie, how are you doing?] I glance down at the text message from my mom, a small smile tugging at my lips. [Eddie: Doing okay, Mom.] [Just working on some...projects.] My parents don''t need to know the details of my genetic engineering experiments or the monster I''ve created. I''d rather keep them in the dark. Talon lets out a rumbling growl, and I turn my attention back to my masterpiece. "Don''t worry, big guy. You''ll be up and running soon enough." I turn my attention to the device I''ve been working on - a helmet-like apparatus with a sleek visor. This is the device that will merge my consciousness with Talon''s body. I''ve been studying the human brain, fascinated by the idea of transferring my mind to another body. At first, I thought about turning my own body into a monster, but that''s far too risky. The testing would require human experiments, which is just too unethical for me. And finding willing subjects would be a major challenge. I''m already struggling to hide my current experiments from the people close to me. Grabbing a screwdriver, I carefully tinker with the inner workings of the device, making final adjustments. The intricate circuitry and wiring must be perfectly calibrated to ensure a seamless transfer. "Eddie, Eddie! Cliff wants to help!" my feathered companion squawks, hopping around my workspace. "Not now, Cliff," I murmur, gently shooing him away. "I need to focus." Cliff tilts his head, blinking his beady eyes curiously. "But Cliff can help! Cliff is smart!" I chuckle and give Cliff a reassuring pat. "I know, buddy. But this is delicate work. I don''t want any accidents." Cliff lets out a disappointed chirp but obediently flutters to a nearby perch, watching me intently. I return my attention to the consciousness-transferring device, carefully tightening a few more connections. The final piece is almost in place. I tighten the last connection on the device, finally completing my masterpiece. I grin as I admire the sleek, futuristic design - the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E., as I''ve named it. Subconscious Yielding and Neural Action Point Synchronization Engine. The key to merging my consciousness with Talon.Support the creativity of authors by visiting Royal Road for this novel and more. With a flourish, I set the helmet-like device aside, running my fingers over the smooth surface. "Time to take you for a test run, big guy." I turn to Talon, my creation, my future. Cliff chirps excitedly from his perch, hopping up and down. "Ooh, Cliff wants to try too! Can Cliff be a monster too?" I chuckle and give the little hybrid a gentle pat. "Not this time, buddy. But who knows, maybe I''ll make you an even bigger, scarier monster someday." Cliff lets out a delighted squawk at the prospect. Facing Talon once more, I feel a surge of anticipation. "Alright, let''s do this." I pick up the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. and slowly lower it onto my head, securing it in place. I start the mind transfer sequence on the computer. "Alright, here we go." The transfer will begin in 10 seconds. I watch the countdown tick down, my heart racing with excitement. "This is it, Talon. Time to become one." The massive creature rumbles in response, its eyes gleaming with an almost eager anticipation. Cliff chirps from the side, hopping up and down on his perch. "Exciting, so exciting!" I just hope the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. won''t fry my brain. The countdown hits zero. "Here we go." I take a deep breath and lower the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. helmet onto my head. For a moment, everything fades to black as the device activates.

I open my eyes, feeling like I''m drifting in midair. Everything seems muted and my body responds sluggishly. As my vision clears, I wonder if the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. experiment was a success. I find myself suspended in some kind of liquid, which gradually drains away. The tube enclosing me releases, and I collapse onto the floor. I try to move my body, but it responds sluggishly. Gritting my teeth, I manage to stand up, my claws scraping against the floor. Wait... claws? Glancing down, I see my front limbs are long and scaly, tipped with sharp talons. Turning to a nearby reflective surface, I gaze upon my form, standing on my four feet, staring back at me. A surge of exhilaration rushes through me - the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. experiment was a success! I''ve transferred my consciousness into Talon''s body. Nearby, I spot my original human form sleeping in a chair, the headset still attached. I hear a familiar chirping sound and turn to see Cliff approaching. The small hybrid creature cocks his head and asks, "Cliff wonders, is Eddie inside?" I nod, a rumbling growl escaping my new reptilian form. Cliff lets out an excited squawk, his wings fluttering. "Yay, Cliff is so happy!" I examine my clawed hands, marveling at the power contained within this body. My senses feel heightened, and I can detect the various scents in the lab. Glancing around, I take in the details of Talon''s form, testing the range of motion in my limbs. Though I cannot speak, I express my awe through a series of low growls. I notice my eyesight is much better, and I can see in the dark with ease. Glancing around, the details of the lab come into sharp focus. Curious, I spot a wooden plank nearby. Gripping it in my clawed hand, I give it a firm bite, feeling it crack and splinter under the power of my jaws. The wood breaks apart, and I let the pieces fall to the floor, impressed by my own strength. I want to test Talon''s movements. It''s already night, so I''ll be less likely to be spotted if I go out. The lab''s connected to the abandoned subway system when I first started making. I head to the tunnels, seeing the long stretch ahead. Thanks to the night vision, I can see everything clearly. I take a few steps forward, feeling the weight and power of this new body. My clawed feet grip the ground effortlessly as I pick up speed, testing the limits of Talon''s agility. The tunnel walls blur past as I bound down the tracks, my reptilian senses heightened. I can smell the damp air, hear the distant dripping of water, and feel the vibrations of the ground beneath me. Reaching the end of the tunnel, I pause, my tail swishing back and forth. Glancing around, I spotted a manhole and went to the surface. I exit to a secluded alleyway, making sure nobody''s around. Emerging from the tunnels, I spot the four-story building next to me and start climbing. No need for my claws - the tiny hairs on the soles of my feet, like those found in lizards and spiders, use Van der Waals forces to let me scale any surface with ease. The building''s rough exterior provides plenty of grip as I ascend, my movements quick and effortless. Reaching the rooftop, I pause to take in the city skyline, the lights twinkling in the distance. A light breeze ruffles my scales, and I relish the freedom of being up high, away from prying eyes. Crouching low, I scan the area, alert for any signs of activity. Satisfied that I''m alone, I leap across the gap to the next building, my powerful legs launching me through the air. I land gracefully, the impact barely registering, and continue my rooftop journey, testing the limits of Talon''s agility. I land on the building''s rooftop, my claws gripping the rough surface with ease. A surge of exhilaration rushes through me. Throwing back my head, I let out a mighty roar that echoes across the city skyline. I saw the hero approaching and quickly hugged the wall, my skin''s pigmentation shifting to match the surface. Thanks to the chameleon DNA I''d added to Talon''s genetic makeup, I blended seamlessly into the environment. The hero arrived, his spring-like arms and feet propelling him in a yellow spandex suit. He looked around, but found nothing. "Was I imagining things? Must have been the wind." I drop my camouflage, sighing in relief as the hero leaps away. I got too excited and rushed things - if I''m spotted, it''ll only mean trouble. Dropping down from the rooftop, I stick to the dark alleyways, keeping a low profile. I suddenly felt my movements becoming sluggish. There was a delay when I wanted to move my body, and I could feel Talon''s primal instincts creeping up. What was happening? Damn, the signal to the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. must be weakening. The range to my body is too far, which is weakening the connection. I wanted to test more of Talon''s capabilities, but I guess I''ll have to call it a day. After spotting a manhole, I quickly returned to the underground tunnels and headed back to the lab. I stand on the platform where Talon''s body was previously. The tube surrounds me again, and liquid starts flooding the tube. I close my eyes as the transfer sequence starts, feeling the familiar sensations of my consciousness returning to my original body. The tube releases, and I collapse onto the floor, pulling off the headset. Cliff comes bounding over, his little wings fluttering excitedly. "Eddie! You''re back! Again!" I give Cliff a gentle pat, relief washing over me. "Yeah, buddy. The transfer went well, and I got to test out Talon''s capabilities a bit more before returning." "Did you have fun exploring?" I chuckle. "You could say that. Talon''s body is incredible - the strength, the agility, the senses. I couldn''t resist pushing the limits a little." I flex my fingers, still feeling the phantom sensation of the powerful claws. "But the connection started to weaken, so I had to cut it short. Guess I''ll have to work on extending the range next time." "Ooh, can Cliff come with you next time? Pleeeease?" I consider it for a moment, then nod. "I don''t see why not. Just as long as you promise to stay out of trouble." I give him a playful poke, and he squeaks in delight. "Yay! Cliff can''t wait!" He flutters up to perch on my shoulder, his tiny talons gripping my shirt. Cliff flutters away, returning to his cozy enclosure. I watch him go, a proud smile tugging at my lips. Turning my attention to Talon''s body, I run a battery of tests, meticulously checking each system. The scans come back clean - no issues detected. I let out a sigh of relief, the tension in my shoulders easing. "Looks like everything''s working as it should," I murmur, marveling at the sheer power and potential of this creation. My dream has finally been realized. Talon may not be perfect, but the foundation is solid. This is just the beginning. I can''t help but feel a surge of excitement coursing through me. There''s so much more I can do, so many other DNA strains to explore and incorporate. Talon won''t be the last of its kind. I''ll need to work on improving the range of the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. technology, but the possibilities are endless. Clenching my fists, I can still feel the phantom sensation of Talon''s powerful claws. The strength, the agility, the heightened senses - it''s all there, waiting to be unleashed. I can''t wait to see what other marvels I can create, what new boundaries I can push. The future is bright, and I''m just getting started. I place my palm against the glass tube, gazing at Talon''s hulking form within. "We''re finally on the starting line, buddy." Talon rumbles in response, the deep growl vibrating through the liquid. Even without a true consciousness, I can sense his eagerness - this is what I''ve been working towards all along. I research more DNA strains that could enhance Talon''s capabilities. Some are hard to come by in the city, but I don''t need to rush. I also look into ways to improve the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. signal''s range. I may need to build my own signal boosters or find methods to move Talon through the city without being detected. I researched late into the night, until I finally dozed off at my desk. Something wet and rough suddenly licks my cheek, and my eyes snap open to see Cliff hovering beside me, his tiny tongue darting out. "Ugh, Cliff! What are you doing?" I groan, wiping my face. "Late! You''re going to be late!" Cliff chirps, his little wings fluttering anxiously. "Late?" I glance at the clock and my eyes widen. "Crap, I''m going to be late!" I hurry to the bathroom, splashing cold water on my face and quickly changing into a fresh set of clothes. Grabbing a slice of bread, I shove it in my mouth as I rush to the door, where I hear Miyuki''s familiar knock. "Eddie! Are you awake?" "Just a sec, I''m coming!" I call, pulling open the door with my shirt still half-buttoned. Miyuki''s eyes widen at my disheveled appearance. "Wow, you look like you had a rough night. Did you stay up too late watching that documentary again?" "Uh, yeah, something like that." I chuckle sheepishly, shoving the last bite of bread in my mouth. "Come on, we''d better get going or we''ll be late." Miyuki shakes her head, a small smile playing on her lips. "Mou, you really need to work on your sleep schedule, Eddie." I trudge alongside Miyuki, struggling to keep my eyes open. Without her by my side, I''d likely be stumbling through the streets, half-asleep. Chapter 3 I soar through the city, leaping across towering skyscrapers with ease. The wind whips through my scales as I glide effortlessly, taking in the dazzling lights and bustling streets below. This power, this freedom - it''s exhilarating. I let out a mighty roar, relishing the sheer force of my creation. The city spreads out before me, a dazzling tapestry of lights and movement. I bank sharply, cutting through the air with effortless grace. My claws extend, ready to grasp the edge of the next building. I pull myself up, perching atop the skyscraper and surveying the world below. Down there, the people scurry about their business, unaware of the magnificent creature soaring overhead. I flex my wings, feeling the power coursing through my body. With a powerful downstroke, I launch myself back into the air, weaving between the towering structures with ease. The thrill of flight is unlike anything else. I revel in the freedom, the sheer exhilaration of defying gravity. My roar echoes through the city, a triumphant declaration of my dominance. I am the master of the skies, a force of nature to be reckoned with. Ugh, a sharp pain shoots through my head. I blink, disoriented, and look up to see my math teacher looming over me, her brow furrowed in a stern expression. "Is my lecture that boring to you, Mr. Logan?" she snaps, her voice dripping with impatience. I realize it was just a dream, and I wince as the entire class erupts in laughter at my expense. Miyuki just shakes her head with a sigh, and I feel my face flush with embarrassment. "Uh, sorry, teach." The teacher''s eyes narrow. "Since you think this is a joke, how about you answer this question on the board." I glance up at the math problem written on the whiteboard. "The answer is 42, ma''am." She pauses, her eyes narrowing. "Correct... Mr. Logan." Shaking her head, she turns back to the board, continuing the lesson. I sink down in my seat, trying to avoid any more attention. I get my notebook out, ready to jot down some ideas for improving the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. system. The class material is a breeze for me - a little studying was all I needed to get a handle on it. Hmm, the range of the Synapse could use some work. I can probably grab the materials I need after school, but even with those upgrades, the max range is still gonna be too limited. Unless I can somehow get access to a satellite or some radio towers, I don''t think I''ll be able to extend it as far as I need to. I need to figure out a Plan B. Hmm, maybe I can find a used van and rig it up to transport Talon wherever I need to go. That could work. I''ll have to see what kind of van I can find and how I can modify it to safely move Talon around. It''s not ideal, but if I can''t come up with a better option, this might be my best shot. I can also use the van as a mobile lab. I can do maintenance on Talon if needed, without the need to go back to the lab at home. This will give me more flexibility and independence to work on Talon wherever I need to. I continue jotting down notes in my notebook, brainstorming more ideas to improve the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. system. Before I know it, the lunch bell rings. Miyuki comes over and taps my shoulder. "Eddie, let''s go grab some lunch." I blink, surprised by how much time has passed. "It''s already lunchtime?" Miyuki nods. "Yes, were you that focused in class?" "Yes..." I trail off, then quickly change the subject. "Nevermind, let''s just go." "Okay!" Miyuki flashes me an excited grin, and we head out of the classroom together.
(Miyuki POV) (Flashback) I have a weird childhood friend. I first met him when his family transferred right next to our house. His black hair and framed glasses made him look fragile. "Hello! I''m Miyuki! What''s your name?" "Eddie, nice to meet you." "Then, Eddie do you want to play?" "No thanks, I would rather study." "Eh? Come on, that''s boring. Let''s go to the park." I grab Eddie''s hand and brought him to the park. "Hey, don''t suddenly grab me!" Eddie protests, but I ignore his objections and continue pulling him along. The park is full of kids running and laughing. I look over at Eddie, who seems uncomfortable and out of place. "See, isn''t this much better than studying?" I say, bumping his shoulder playfully. "You need to get out and have some fun once in a while, you know?" "I just don''t see the appeal of aimless play. There are so many productive things I could be doing with my time." I roll my eyes. "You''re such a stick in the mud, Eddie. Come on, let''s play!" I easily scale the monkey bars, swinging from one bar to the next with practiced ease. Looking over, I see Eddie struggling to climb. "You doing alright down there?" He huffs, "Yeah, pant I''m fine!" Eddie loses his grip and tumbles down, landing flat on his rear. "Eddie! You alright?" He brushes the dirt off his pants, trying to maintain his composure. "Never better," he replies, a hint of embarrassment in his voice. I keep trying to catch Eddie as we play tag, but the other kids are much faster than him. He''s always the first one to get tagged. Still, I know he''s really smart - when we play Reversi, he always beats me. He gets this smug little grin on his face every time he wins, so I keep challenging him, but he just keeps on winning. "You''re way too good at this game, Eddie!" I say, playfully nudging his shoulder. "How about we try something else? I bet I can beat you at that." Eddie grins smugly, adjusting his glasses. "What''s this? Giving up already? I guess we could try something else. You''re just not good in these types of games. It is not even a challenge." "Why, you little--." I clench my fists, glaring at him. "Alright, mister, prepare to have your glasses knocked off! I''m about to wipe that smug look right off your face." I love hanging out with Eddie, even if I have to practically drag him out of his room sometimes. That guy would just stay cooped up studying all day if I didn''t force him to take a break. We''ve become the best of friends over the years, and I know he feels the same way, even if he doesn''t always show it. There''s a little part of me that gets all giddy whenever he acknowledges that I''m his best friend too. It just makes me so happy to know I mean that much to him. Sure, Eddie can be a real stick-in-the-mud sometimes, always studying instead of just having fun. But that''s part of what makes our friendship work. I keep him from getting too serious, and he keeps me grounded when I get a little too crazy. We balance each other out perfectly.Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings. I wouldn''t trade our friendship for anything. Eddie might be a total nerd, but he''s my nerd, and I wouldn''t have it any other way. We''re sitting in Eddie''s living room, watching the news broadcast. Ember Nova is on the screen, her vibrant red costume billowing as she takes down a group of criminals. "Go, Ember Nova!" I cheer, bouncing excitedly on the couch. "Isn''t she amazing, Eddie?" "I don''t see the appeal of these so-called heroes. They''re just people with powers playing dress-up." I nudge him playfully. "Aw, come on! Where''s your sense of adventure? Live a little!" I turn back to the screen as Ember Nova strikes a heroic pose. "No matter where you hide, my flames will burn bright and stop you, evildoers!" she declares. I can''t resist jumping up and reenacting the scene. "No matter where you hide, my flames will burn bright and stop you, evildoers!" I strike the same pose, grinning at Eddie. "See, it''s fun! You should try it." Eddie just shakes his head, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "I''ll pass. That''s a bit too...embarrassing for my tastes." I huff and plop back down on the couch, my eyes glued to the screen as Ember Nova continues her heroic exploits. "I want to be like her someday," I say, my eyes shining with excitement as I watch Ember Knight on the TV screen. Eddie scoffs. "Then you better start praying you will be a S.U.P.E.R. Only 30% of the population gets to be one." I bounce on the couch, mimicking Ember Knight''s heroic poses. "I will! I''m going to get a cool power and gonna BAM! SWOOSH! CHA!" He rolls his eyes. "Or maybe you will get a power like farting nauseous gases." "Don''t jinx it!" I playfully nudge him, my enthusiasm undimmed. Even if Eddie doesn''t share my excitement, I can''t help but get swept up in the thrill of imagining myself as a superhero, soaring through the sky and saving the day. Superheroes are just the coolest! One day, Eddie and I are playing near the riverbank. I sprint along the riverbank, the wind whipping through my hair. "Come on, Eddie! Try and keep up!" "W-Wait up..." Eddie pants, struggling to match my pace. Suddenly, I catch a whiff of something burning. "What is that smell?" Eddie''s eyes go wide. "Miyuki!" I glance down and to my shock, my legs are engulfed in flames! "AAHH! Put it out! Put it out! Put it out!" "Hurry, jump into the river!" Eddie shouts. I leap into the rushing river without hesitation, putting out the flames on my legs. Once I reach the shore, Eddie rushes over to me. "Are you okay, Miyuki?" I nod, still trying to catch my breath. "Y-Yeah, I think so. What just happened?" The flames start appearing again, and I panic. "Oh no, not again!" I cry, waving my arms frantically. "Miyuki, stay calm!" Eddie says, placing his hands on my shoulders. "Are you feeling any pain?" I pause and realize despite my legs burning. I didn''t feel any burns. "No, actually... it doesn''t hurt at all." "Miyuki, I think you''ve awakened your power. You''re a S.U.P.E.R. now!" My eyes go wide. "A S.U.P.E.R.? Like Ember Nova?" I can hardly believe it. "Congratulations. You now have a chance to be a hero." I celebrate and start jumping up and down. "Yes, yes, yes! I''m a SUPER, just like Ember Nova!" I can hardly contain my excitement. "Miyuki, calm down and focus on turning the flames off. You''re burning your clothes!" "How do I do that?" I ask, my legs still flickering with fire. "I''m not sure," Eddie admits. "Maybe try thinking of something cold? Like ice or snow?" I furrow my brow in concentration, picturing a snowy winter wonderland. Slowly, the flames begin to sputter and fade from my legs. "It''s working!" I try to summon the flames again, focusing on hot thoughts. Sure enough, the flames flare up from my legs once more. "Yes! It worked!" I exclaim, grinning from ear to ear. "This is so cool! Just like Ember Nova!" I bounce up and down, the flames trailing behind me. "I''m going to be the greatest hero ever, just you wait and see, Eddie! With these amazing powers, I''ll be unstoppable!" "I don''t know, Miyuki. Having cool powers doesn''t automatically make you a hero. You''ll need to train and hone your skills if you really want to be like Ember Nova." "What do you mean? Of course I''ll be a great hero! I have the powers, don''t I?" "It''s not that simple," Eddie sighs. "You need discipline, strategy, and the right mindset. Powers alone won''t cut it." I cross my arms, a determined gleam in my eye. "Well then, I guess you''ll just have to help me, won''t you, Eddie?" He blinks in surprise. "Huh? Why do I have to help?" "Because we''re best friends, silly!" I nudge him playfully. "And I''m going to need all the help I can get if I want to be the next Ember Nova. So you better get to training me, mister!" Eddie opens his mouth, then closes it, considering my words. Finally, he sighs in defeat. "Alright, fine. I''ll help you train. But don''t expect miracles, okay?" I pump my fist excitedly. "Yes! This is going to be so much fun, I just know it! Get ready, Eddie, because I''m going to be the greatest hero ever!" Years have flown by, and Eddie and I are still the closest of friends. He''s been an invaluable support, helping me train and offering guidance whenever I need it. I don''t know where I''d be without his assistance - probably not ranked among the top students at our school. I''m so grateful to have Eddie in my life. He''s always there for me, no matter what. Even when I''m struggling or feeling down, he finds a way to lift my spirits and keep me motivated. His unwavering belief in me means the world. Sure, he can be a total nerd sometimes, but that''s part of what makes our friendship work so well. We make the perfect team. I don''t know what I''d do without my best friend by my side. He''s been there for me through it all, and I know I can always count on him. Eddie is one in a million, and I''m the luckiest person to have him in my life. (Present) I head out of the school building with Eddie, like we do every day. "Hey, Eddie. Want to watch the new Air Dynamic movie at my place?" He shakes his head. "Not today, Miyuki. I''ve got some errands to run, so you can go ahead without me." "Do you want me to come with you?" "No, it''s going to take a while. I don''t want you to get bored waiting around." Eddie gives me an apologetic smile. "I''ll catch up with you later, okay?" "Alright..." I try to hide my disappointment as I watch him walk away. As I''m about to head home, I spot Kazuya and his group of followers heading somewhere. I wonder what they''re up to now. I got a bad feeling, so I followed them. As I trailed behind, I couldn''t help but notice their slimy behavior - they were flirting aggressively with girls on the street, and the sight of it made my skin crawl. My suspicions only grew when I saw them corner a timid-looking girl and lead her into a secluded alley. Something was clearly not right. I quickened my pace to follow them. I quicken my pace as I follow Kazuya and his group down the secluded alley. The timid girl they''ve cornered looks terrified, and my heart sinks as I realize what they''re about to do. "Hey, leave her alone!" I shout, rushing forward. Kazuya and his cronies turn to face me, sneers spreading across their faces. "Well, well, if it isn''t little Miss Miyuki," Kazuya drawls. "Come to play the hero again, I see." "Stop this right now," I demand, stepping between them and the girl. "Let her go." Kazuya chuckles darkly. "I don''t think so. We were just getting started." The other boys move to surround me, but I stand my ground, flames already flickering to life around my legs. "I won''t let you hurt her," I growl. Kazuya''s eyes narrow. "Always sticking your nose where it doesn''t belong, aren''t you, Miyuki? First, it was protecting that pathetic friend of yours, and now this?" He takes a step towards me, his telekinetic powers crackling around him. "I''m getting real tired of you interfering with my fun." "Your ''fun'' is terrorizing innocent people," I spit. "That''s not fun, that''s just cruel. Didn''t you want to be a hero?! Then how could you do something like this!" "Hey, hey, you''re making this sound more ridiculous than it is," Kazuya said dismissively. "We''re just having a bit of fun. Besides, I''m going to be a future pro hero. I''m going to be the best of the best. I''m just giving her a chance to be my woman in advance." His arrogant words and casual disregard for the girl made me angry. You think you can just play with women whenever you want. Without hesitation, I launched myself forward, flames erupting from my legs to boost my speed, and I delivered a powerful kick directly to Kazuya''s face. "You scum!" I yelled as he reeled back, a trickle of blood running from his nose. Turning to the frightened girl, I asked with concern, "Are you okay?" "Y-Yes," she stammered in reply. "That hurts, you gorilla woman!" Kazuya shouted, glaring at me as he got back to his feet. He gestures to his followers. "I don''t know why I bothered talking to you. Boys, teach this little girl a lesson!" I brace myself as the other boys close in, their faces twisted with malice. The flames around my legs flare up, ready to defend myself. "Run!" I shout to the girl, who doesn''t hesitate to flee. I unleash a torrent of flames, driving Kazuya''s cronies back. Without powers, they''re no match for me one-on-one. But their sheer numbers, coupled with Kazuya''s telekinetic support, make it a challenge to keep them at bay. I duck and weave, my fire blasts scorching the ground around us. But Kazuya''s followers are relentless, and I can feel myself starting to tire. "What''s the matter, Miyuki? Already feeling tired?" Kazuya taunts, his voice dripping with malice. I grit my teeth, refusing to show any weakness. "Not a chance, Kazuya! I''m just getting warmed up!" Summoning my remaining strength, I launch myself forward, raining down a flurry of fiery strikes. The boys scramble to dodge, their arrogance giving way to panic. "Don''t just stand there, you idiots! Get her!" Kazuya barks, his telekinetic powers lashing out. I weave through the attacks, my flames blazing brighter with each passing moment. Kazuya''s cronies lash out, but I''m too fast for them. I duck and dodge, my fiery kicks and punches driving them back. He hurls a metal pipe at me, and I barely manage to dodge it. The impact cracks the concrete where I was standing just moments ago. My heart races, but I refuse to let them intimidate me. I charge forward, unleashing a furious assault. Flames erupt from my legs, propelling me towards them. But Kazuya is ready, and with a flick of his hand, he sends a dumpster hurtling towards me. I tried to dodge, but it caught me off guard. The dumpster slams into me, knocking me to the ground. My head cracks against the concrete, and I feel a searing pain. Spots dance in my vision as I struggle to stay conscious. As my consciousness starts to fade, I hear Kazuya''s panicked voice. "Damn it, that wasn''t supposed to happen..." Then everything goes dark. Chapter 4 After parting ways with Miyuki, I headed to the tech district to stock up on supplies for upgrading the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. I head to the tech district, determined to find the components I need to upgrade the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. Stepping into the electronics store, I quickly scan the shelves, my eyes darting from one item to the next. I need specialized circuitry, high-density memory chips, and the latest neural interface sensors. I grab a basket and take the components that I need; the clerk eyes me curiously, likely wondering what a teenager could possibly need with such advanced hardware. I offer a polite smile, not wanting to draw unnecessary attention. "Quite the haul you''ve got there. Building a new computer?" the clerk asks, eyeing the basket. "Oh, just a personal project. I''m always tinkering with tech, you know how it is." I chuckle, trying to keep the conversation casual. The less I reveal about the true nature of my work, the better. "Well, you seem to know what you''re doing. Let me know if you need any help finding something specific." The clerk nods, returning to their duties. I nod in acknowledgment With everything gathered, I approach the counter, pulling out my wallet. The total cost is steep, but I''ve been saving up for this. I hand over the cash, eager to get back to the lab and start the upgrades. The clerk nods, handing me the bag of supplies. "Good luck with your project," he says, a hint of curiosity in his voice. I nod in thanks, quickly making my way out of the store. The sooner I can enhance the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E., the more I can freely use Talon. I clutched the bag of tech supplies, eager to get back to the lab and start the upgrades on the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. With everything I needed. The next step was to find a way to transport Talon when I wasn''t connected to him. Heading to the local dealership, I scanned the lot, my eyes landing on a sleek, roomy van. Perfect for discreetly moving around without arousing suspicion. I approached the salesperson, giving them a friendly smile. I approached the salesperson, my heart racing with anticipation. "Excuse me, I''m looking to purchase a vehicle for a personal project. Something large enough to accommodate a special...cargo. Do you have anything that might suit my needs?" The salesperson eyed me curiously, no doubt wondering about the nature of my "special cargo." Nevertheless, they quickly led me to the van I had spotted earlier, its sleek design and ample interior space catching my eye. "This van should do the trick," the salesperson said, gesturing towards the vehicle. "It''s got plenty of room in the back and the latest safety features. What do you think?" I examined the van, picturing Talon safely secured within. "This is perfect. How much are you asking for it?" I grimaced at the high price the salesperson quoted me. "The price seems a bit high, don''t you think?" I asked, hoping to negotiate a better deal. I couldn''t help but feel the sting of the steep cost - every penny counted when it came to funding my ambitious projects. I''ve been making some money from my "side business," but it''s still not enough to cover all the costs of the equipment and materials I need for my lab. I gotta be really careful with my spending, making sure I budget every purchase. The salesperson paused, considering my request. "I''m afraid the price is non-negotiable," I grimaced at the high price, knowing I couldn''t afford to pay that much. But this van was essential for my plans. As I inspected the vehicle more closely, I noticed a few signs that it was previously owned and not brand new. "Hold on. This van looks a bit... pre-owned," I said, raising an eyebrow at the salesperson. I can''t justify paying top dollar for a secondhand vehicle." The salesperson''s eyes widened, realizing I had caught on to their attempt to sell me an older model at a premium price. "W-well, I... uh, I can certainly look into adjusting the price for you," they stammered, clearly flustered. I crossed my arms, maintaining a calm yet firm demeanor. "Alright, how about we negotiate the price?" The salesperson paused, considering my request. "Hmm, let me see what I can do." He tapped their chin and glanced at the van. "Okay, I think I can shave a few hundred off the asking price. Does that sound more reasonable?" I scrutinized the offer, considering the pros and cons. This van was essential for my plans, but I couldn''t afford to overspend. "That''s better, but I was hoping we could go a little lower. How about..." I named a price that was closer to my budget. After some tense back-and-forth, we finally settled on a price that was much more reasonable for a secondhand van. I let out a small sigh of relief, pleased that I had managed to secure a deal that fit within my budget. "Looks like we have an agreement," I said, shaking the salesperson''s hand. I fill out the necessary paperwork, carefully providing all the required information. The salesperson hands me the keys, and I can''t help but feel a surge of excitement. This van will be the perfect way to transport Talon without drawing unwanted attention. Clutching the keys, I offer the salesperson a grateful nod. "Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it." With that, I turn and make my way to the van, eager to get behind the wheel and head back to the lab. The engine roars to life as I start the ignition, and I can''t help but smile. This is another step closer to fully realizing my ambitions. Putting the van in gear, I pull out of the dealership, my mind racing with the possibilities that lie ahead.
I''m driving back to the lab when I spot a girl waving her arms, calling for help. I slow down the van and roll down the window. "Excuse me, what''s going on?" The girl looks up at me, her eyes wide with fear. "Please, you have to help! A woman is hurt and needs assistance!" I hesitate for a moment, torn between getting back to my work and helping this stranger in need. But the worry in her voice tugs at my conscience. "Okay, where is she? Lead the way," I say, pulling the van over to the curb. The girl nods gratefully and gestures for me to follow. I quickly park the van and jump out, hurrying after her as she darts down the alley. "This way, hurry!" she calls out, her voice laced with urgency. This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there. I pick up my pace, my heart pounding as I wonder what could have happened. As we round the corner, I see a woman lying on the ground, unmoving. "There she is!" the girl cries, rushing to the woman''s side. I rush over to the woman''s side only to find out it was Miyuki, my heart pounding. "Miyuki? Miyuki! Miyuki, can you hear me?" I frantically check her for injuries, my hands trembling as I see the blood pooling around her head. "What happened?" I ask the girl, trying to keep my voice steady. "I don''t know, I just found her like this," the girl says, her own voice shaking. "We need to get her help, she''s bleeding really badly!" I nod, swallowing the lump in my throat. "Okay, help me get her to my van. We need to get her to the hospital right away." Together, we carefully lift Miyuki and carry her to the waiting van. I open the door and we gently lay her down in the backseat. Her face is pale, and I can''t tell if she''s breathing. "Hang on, Miyuki," I whisper, my voice cracking with emotion. "You''re going to be okay. Just hold on." I jump into the driver''s seat and peel out of the alley, tires squealing. My mind races, filled with a thousand terrifying thoughts. What if she''s badly hurt? What if I''m too late? I can''t lose her, not Miyuki. The hospital is only a few blocks away, but it feels like an eternity. I keep glancing back at Miyuki, willing her to open her eyes, to show some sign of life. The girl sits with her, trying to stop the bleeding with a piece of cloth. Finally, I pull up to the emergency entrance and leap out of the van. "Help! I need help!" I shout, frantically waving down a nurse. Within seconds, a team of medical personnel rush over with a gurney. They carefully transfer Miyuki and rush her inside, leaving me standing there, my hands shaking, praying that she''ll be okay. I rush to the doctor, my heart pounding. "How is she? Will Miyuki be okay?" The doctor''s expression is grave. "Her head has fractured, and she has serious head trauma. She''s also lost a lot of blood. She needs immediate surgery to stop the bleeding and repair the damage." My stomach twists with worry. "Do whatever it takes, please. I can''t lose her." The doctor nods solemnly. "We''ll do our best. We need to get her into the operating room right away." I watch helplessly as they wheel Miyuki away, my mind racing with a thousand fears. All I can do now is pray that she pulls through. I pace anxiously in the hospital hallway, my mind consumed with worry for Miyuki. The doctor''s words about her severe injuries have left me shaken, and I can''t stop imagining the worst. A young girl, the same one who led me to Miyuki, sits nearby, her eyes downcast. I approach her, needing answers. "Excuse me, can you tell me what happened?" I ask, my voice tinged with desperation. The girl looks up at me, her expression somber. "I was being harassed by some boys in the alley," she explains, wringing her hands. "She... she saw what was happening and came to my defense. She told me to run, and so I did." My heart sinks as I imagine Miyuki, brave and selfless as always, standing up to protect this stranger. "And then?" I prompt, dreading the answer. "I don''t know, I heard fighting and only came back to her with you." The girl''s voice trembles as tears well in her eyes. "I''m so sorry, I should have stayed, I should have helped her!" I reach out, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "This isn''t your fault. Miyuki did what she always does - she put someone else first. Now we just have to hope she pulls through." The girl nods, sniffling, and I turn my gaze back to the operating room doors, silently willing the doctors to save my closest friend. Hours passed, my pacing back and forth in the hospital hallway becoming more frantic with each minute that ticked by. Finally, the doctor emerged, his expression grave. "How is she?" I ask, my voice quivering with anxiety. "Is Miyuki going to be okay?" The doctor takes a deep breath. "The operation was successful, and we were able to stop the bleeding. However..." He pauses, his eyes filled with sympathy. "Miyuki has lapsed into a coma. I''m afraid we don''t know if she''ll recover." My heart sinks, the words hitting me like a physical blow. "What? That can''t be true," I stammer, my mind reeling. "She has to be okay, she has to wake up!" The doctor places a hand on my shoulder, his touch heavy with regret. "I''m so sorry. All we can do now is wait and monitor her condition closely. But I want you to prepare yourself for the possibility that..." He trails off, the unspoken words hanging in the air. I shake my head vehemently, refusing to accept this reality. "No, she''s going to be fine. Miyuki is strong, she''ll pull through. She has to." My voice cracks, the weight of the situation threatening to overwhelm me. The doctor offers me a sympathetic look, but I can see the uncertainty in his eyes. Miyuki, my closest friend, the one who has always been there for me, now lies unconscious, her life hanging by a thread. I can''t bear the thought of losing her. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I''m about to face. "Can I see her?" I ask the doctor, my voice barely above a whisper. The doctor nods solemnly. "Of course. This way." I follow him down the sterile hospital corridor, my footsteps echoing in the deafening silence. My heart pounds in my chest as we approach the room where Miyuki lies. The doctor pauses at the doorway. "Take all the time you need," he says gently, before stepping aside to allow me to enter. Slowly, I push the door open and step inside. There, in the stark white hospital bed, is Miyuki. Her vibrant red hair is matted, her face pale and still. A bandage wraps around her head, and an array of tubes and wires are connected to her motionless body, monitoring her every vital sign. I approach the bed, my eyes filling with tears. Carefully, I reach out and take her hand, my fingers trembling. The warmth of her skin is a small comfort, but the lack of response chills me to the core. I stand there, wordlessly, unable to find the right words to say. All I can do is hold her hand and pray that she''ll open her eyes. I exited Miyuki''s room, my heart heavy with worry and fear. I needed answers, and the girl who had led me here might have them. Approaching her, I asked, "Do you know who did this to Miyuki?" The girl looked up at me, her eyes filled with uncertainty. "There were a lot of boys, but their leader... he had blonde hair and was wearing the same uniform as you." As the words sank in, a surge of rage coursed through me. I knew exactly who she was describing - Kazuya, the bully who had tormented me for years. Without a second thought, I whirled around and slammed my fist into the nearby wall, the impact sending a jolt of pain through my hand. The girl''s eyes widened in surprise at my sudden outburst. "You know him, don''t you?" she asked hesitantly. I nodded, my jaw clenched tight. "Yeah, I know him. And he''s going to pay for what he''s done." My voice was laced with a fury I had never felt before. Cradling my bloodied hand, I turned and strode down the hallway, my mind racing with a single, unwavering thought: I would make Kazuya answer for this.
I got into my van and went to find Kazuya. I knew the spots where he and his cronies liked to hang out, and I headed straight for the arcade center. Pulling up, I spotted Kazuya lounging outside with a group of his followers. Without hesitation, I flung open the van door and stepped out, my eyes locked on him. "Kazuya!" I shouted, my voice laced with fury. "Get over here, you bastard!" Kazuya replied annoyingly, "What do you want, Logan? Come to cry about your little girlfriend again?" I didn''t say anything, I just clenched my fist and moved to punch him. But before I could reach him, Kazuya blasted me with a powerful telekinetic blast, knocking me to the ground. I groaned as I pushed myself back up, glaring at Kazuya. "This is your fault, you son of a bitch! Miyuki is in the hospital because of you!" "Oh? She''s alive?" Kazuya sneers, a twisted grin spreading across his face. "She''s in a coma because of you!" I shout, struggling to my feet. I lunge at him again, but he easily deflects my attack with a telekinetic push, sending me tumbling to the ground. Kazuya lets out a cruel laugh. "She''s in a coma? Hahaha! That''s a shame. I guess I hit her too hard." "You bastard!" I roar, charging at him again, but he simply waves his hand and I''m knocked back once more, landing hard on the pavement. Pain shoots through my body, but the anger coursing through me is far more intense. I clench my fists, refusing to give up. "I won''t let you get away with this, Kazuya!" I charge at him again, determined to make him pay for what he''s done. Kazuya simply waves his hand, and I''m suddenly pinned to the ground, his telekinetic powers holding me in place. "Give it up, Logan. You''re weak. Without powers, you''re nothing but a pathetic nerd. You''re just a nobody, while I''ll be the greatest hero of all time," Kazuya sneers, his voice dripping with arrogance. I struggle against his hold, glaring up at him. "You''re no hero, Kazuya. You''re just an asshole," I growl, my voice strained. Kazuya lets out a cruel laugh as he stomps down harder on my back. "That''s where you''re wrong, Logan. With my powers, I can easily be a top Pro Hero. People will love me and sing praises of me. And you? You''ll be nothing." I glare up at Kazuya as he sneers down at me, his goons flanking him. "Since Miyuki is in a coma, I guess I have one less rival to worry about," he says, his voice dripping with malice. I struggle against his telekinetic hold, but it''s no use. I''m completely at his mercy. "You won''t get away with this, Kazuya," I spit, my voice laced with anger. He just laughs and turns to leave, his goons following close behind. "We''ll see about that, Logan," I crash into a dumpster as Kazuya knocks me back with his telekinetic powers. His goons laugh as they turn and walk away with Kazuya. I groan, struggling to push myself up from the ground. The pain shoots through my body, but the fury burning inside me is far more intense. I glare at their retreating figures, clenching my fists. "I won''t let you get away with this, Kazuya!" I shout after them, my voice laced with determination. Chapter 5 I storm into my room, slamming the door behind me. Damn that Kazuya and his goons. My fists clench as I wince, examining the bruises blossoming across my skin. Wincing, I grab the medkit from my desk drawer and start dabbing antiseptic on the cuts, gritting my teeth against the sting. That jerk really did a number on me this time. But I won''t let him get away with it. Not again. He injured Miyuki, and I''m not going to let him get away with it. I can bear all of the insults and pain he has caused me. They were nothing to me. But Miyuki is a different matter altogether. He put her in a coma! Miyuki was going to be a pro hero! Now her dreams are crushed, and that asshole Kazuya is going to be one. Are people like him becoming heroes? Never! I won''t allow it! I slam my fist onto the table in anger, wincing at the pain but ignoring it. I remember all of their faces, Kazuya''s and his goons. Their laughs, sneers, and mockery are ingrained into my mind. They don''t deserve to live, and I''m going to make sure of it. I take a deep breath, trying to calm down. Miyuki wouldn''t want me to do anything reckless. But I can''t just sit back and let them get away with this. Kazuya and his lackeys have terrorized me and Miyuki for too long. And now he has crossed a line. It''s time I took matters into my own hands. I head down to my lab, the familiar scent of chemicals and the whirring of equipment greeting me. As I step inside, Cliff''s cheerful chirps catch my attention. "Welcome back, Eddie¡ª" His beady eyes scan me, head tilting curiously. "Are you okay, Eddie?" I pause, considering how to respond. "I''m fine, Cliff." My voice comes out more strained than I intend. Cliff flutters closer, his colorful wings beating the air. "Are you sure? You look to be in pain. If there is anything Cliff can do, Cliff can do it!" He hops from one scaly leg to the other, his excitement palpable. I manage a small smile, reaching out to give his feathered head a gentle scratch. "...Thank you, Cliff." The warmth of his concern is a welcome comfort amidst the turmoil swirling within me. With a newfound determination, I turn to Talon, sleeping peacefully within the containment tube. Those people¡ªKazuya and his goons¡ªthey''re not human, but monsters in human skin. To fight them, I must become the monster myself. No more hiding, no more running. It''s time to face them head-on. Miyuki''s dreams were crushed because of their cruelty. I won''t let them get away with it. They''ll learn the hard way that messing with me has consequences. I''ll fight fire with fire, and they''ll soon realize the true power they''re up against. I''ll show them who the real monster is. I head over to my workbench, Cliff''s curious eyes following my every move. Grabbing the specialized components I purchased, I started disassembling the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. helmet to add new components. "Ooh, what are you doing, Eddie? Can Cliff help?" Cliff flutters excitedly, his vibrant wings beating the air. "I''m upgrading the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. to improve the range of the connection with Talon," I explain, my brow furrowed in concentration. "The last time, the link started to weaken when I got too far away. I can''t let that happen again." Cliff cocks his head, his beady eyes filled with curiosity. "Does that mean you can stay with Talon longer?" "Yes, that''s the idea," I reply, offering him a reassuring smile. "With these upgrades, I''ll be able to explore the city as Talon for longer without risking the connection breaking." Cliff flutters closer, his feathers brushing against my arm. "That sounds exciting! Cliff wants to see the world with you and Talon!" His enthusiasm is infectious, and I find myself momentarily distracted from my dark thoughts. I finish the last of the upgrades to the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E., double-checking the connections and calibrating the range. According to my calculations, the connection should now extend 15-20% farther than before, allowing me to explore the city as Talon without the link weakening. This is the best I can do with the limited materials I have access to right now. I turn my attention to the van parked in my garage, considering how I can outfit it to transport Talon. This old beat-up van will have to do - I don''t have the time or resources for anything fancy. Grabbing my trusty toolbox, I get to work. First, I install a specialized containment unit in the back, similar to the one Talon is resting in right now. It''ll keep him secure and comfortable during the trip. I examine the unit, making sure the connections are secure and the life support systems are functioning properly. Can''t risk anything going wrong when Talon''s in there. With a satisfied nod, I move on to the next modification. I add a few compact generators to the van''s electrical system, ensuring it has ample power to support the containment unit and all the electronics. These generators will keep Talon stable and the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. functioning during our excursions. I know this setup isn''t ideal - the generators are noisy and require constant refueling. But for now, it''s the best I can do to get Talon out there. I make a mental note to look into solar power options in the future. That would provide a cleaner, more sustainable solution. But for now, I need to focus on getting this van ready. I can''t let Kazuya and his goons get away with what they''ve done. I was about to test the van, but Cliff fluttered over to me. "It''s getting late, Eddie. You should rest." His chirps are laced with worry. "I appreciate your concern, Cliff, but I need to keep working. There''s no time to waste." I turn back to the van, determined to get it ready. Cliff flutters closer, his feathers brushing against my arm. "Please, Eddie? Cliff worries about you. You need to take a break." His large, beady eyes plead with me, the worry evident in his expression. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. "Alright, Cliff. You win. I''ll try to get some sleep." I offer him a small smile, grateful for his care. I head to my room, Cliff''s concerned chirps fading behind me as I close the door. Exhaustion weighs heavily on my limbs, but the moment I lie down, Miyuki''s still form in the hospital bed flashes before my eyes. Kazuya''s sneering face, his goons'' mocking laughter - it''s all I can see. I squeeze my eyes shut, willing the images to disappear, but they only grow more vivid. Miyuki''s dreams are crushed, and just thinking about Kazuya becoming a hero makes my insieds churn. My fists clench at my sides, and rage bubbles within me. I won''t let them get away with this¡ªnot anymore. "I can''t sleep¡"
I head to school alone today, which feels strange. Miyuki and I have walked together every morning since we were kids. I couldn''t believe I would miss Miyuki''s chatter about Ember Nova. That superhero was all she ever talked about. I''d get an earful every morning about her latest exploits and how amazing she is. Now, that familiar voice and energy is missing. I guess quiet mornings weren''t really my thing. I enter the school gates and in the corner of my eye. I see Kazuya laughing with his friends, not a worry in the world. Anger flares up inside me, but I force it down. Causing a scene here would only backfire. I steer clear, keeping my distance. I don''t need his attention right now¡ªif I let my emotions get the better of me, I might do something I''ll regret, and I won''t get the revenge Miyuki deserves. I make my way to class, my mind racing. Miyuki''s absence is like a constant ache. Now, the halls feel hollow without her voice filling the air. But I know I have to stay strong, for Miyuki''s sake. I''ll find a way to make things right, no matter what it takes. I take my seat, trying to ignore the empty chair next to me where Miyuki usually sits. The teacher clears her throat. "It is with great regret that I must inform you all that Miyuki Shibata will not be able to attend school for the time being, due to an unfortunate accident." My hand instinctively clenches into a fist. I know the real reason - Kazuya and his goons are responsible for putting Miyuki in the hospital. The anger I felt earlier surged back, but I forced myself to remain calm. I can''t afford to lose control. "Miyuki has been an exemplary student, and we all wish her a speedy recovery. In the meantime, I expect you all to continue your studies diligently and support one another during this difficult time." As the lesson drones on, I find it increasingly difficult to focus. My mind keeps drifting to Miyuki, wondering how she''s doing, hoping she''ll wake up soon. The thought of her lying in that hospital bed, unconscious, makes my stomach twist with guilt. If only I had been there to protect her. When the final bell rings, I waste no time gathering my things and heading straight for the hospital. I arrive at the hospital and immediately spot Miyuki''s mother, Akira, sitting in the waiting room. Her long, dark brown hair is pulled back into a practical bun, and her soft brown eyes convey a mixture of worry and determination. Despite the stress etched on her face, she radiates a comforting warmth. Akira wears a simple cardigan over a pair of jeans, a community pin adorning her sleeve. I approach Akira, my heart heavy. "Aunty Akira," I say, my voice barely above a whisper. She looks up and her eyes light up with recognition. "Eddie, dear," Akira says, standing to embrace me. Her warm hug is comforting, "I''m so glad you''re here. Miyuki will be happy to see you." I return the hug, feeling a lump form in my throat. "How is she?" I ask, my voice shaking slightly. Akira''s expression turns somber. "The doctors say Miyuki is stable, but she hasn''t woken up yet." She places a gentle hand on my arm. "I heard you saved her. Thank you, Eddie." "I''m so sorry, Aunty Akira. I should have been there to protect her. If only I had¡ª" Akira cuts me off. "Don''t blame yourself, Eddie. This isn''t your fault. Miyuki is strong, and she''s going to pull through. All we can do now is be here for her." I nod, unable to find the words to express how I feel. Akira''s reassurance helps ease the burden on my heart, but I know I won''t be able to forgive myself until Miyuki wakes up. "Do you know how she became like this, Eddie?" Akira''s eyes were filled with worry. "She tried to save a girl." The words felt like a weight on my chest. "Is the girl safe?" Akira''s voice trembled slightly. "Yes..." I could barely meet her gaze. Akira sighed, a sad smile crossing her lips. "I guess that''s Miyuki for you. Always trying to help others." She shook her head, worry etching her features. "You''re always getting into trouble, to the point that I worry too much. But I can''t blame you¡" She placed a gentle hand on my arm, her eyes filled with a mixture of pride and concern. Seeing Aunty so sad makes me feel more guilty and makes my anger towards Kazuya stronger. "What''s wrong, Eddie?" Aunty asks, her voice filled with concern. "Nothing, Aunty..." I reply, not wanting to burden her further. Aunty places a gentle hand on my arm. "Don''t worry, Eddie. We both know Miyuki is not a quitter. I''m sure she will open her eyes sooner or later and just laugh this off." "...I''m sure she will." I nod, trying to match Aunty''s optimism, though the words feel hollow on my tongue. It''s good to see Aunty still being her optimistic self. "Eddie, dear, why don''t you come stay at our house for a bit? I could use the company, and I know Miyuki would be happy to have you there when she wakes up." I shake my head. "Thank you, Aunty, but there''s something I need to take care of first." The image of Kazuya''s smug face flashes in my mind, fueling my determination. Akira sighs, a sad smile crossing her lips. "I understand. Just remember, our door is always open if you need anything. Miyuki and I are here for you." "I will, Aunty. Thank you." I give her one last hug before leaving the hospital room, my resolve strengthening with each step. I promise to visit Miyuki as often as I can, no matter what it takes to make things right.
I arrive back at my lab, my mind racing with thoughts of Miyuki and my desire for revenge. Quickly, I begin checking over my van, ensuring it''s ready for the mission. Cliff flutters over, his bright feathers catching my eye. "Eddie, Eddie! What are you doing?" he chirps, his head tilting curiously. I pause, meeting Cliff''s inquisitive gaze. "I''m preparing to go on a hunt, Cliff," I say, my voice resolute. Cliff''s eyes widen, and he lets out an excited squawk. "A hunt? Can Cliff come too? Cliff wants to help!" I shake my head. "I''m afraid this is something I have to do alone, Cliff. It''s too dangerous for you." Cliff''s face falls, his vibrant feathers drooping. Seeing his dejected expression, I offer him a reassuring smile. "But tell you what, when I get back, I''ll bring you a special snack. How does that sound?" Cliff''s eyes light up, and he lets out a happy chirp. "Yay! Cliff loves snacks! Hurry back, Eddie!" Cliff flutters back to his enclosure, ready to relax. I focus on the task at hand, determined to see this through. I continue working on my van, making the final checks. Tonight, I''m going on a hunt. My first target is one of Kazuya''s friends, a guy named Riku. He''s in the same class as me, and I know where he likes to hang out, so he''s a prime target. I''m leaving Kazuya for last. I load Talon into the van with the help of some of the arm robots I created before. I don''t want to damage its containment, so we load Talon carefully, but we manage to secure it. Talon lets out a low, rumbling growl. I know it senses my determination, my desire for vengeance. "Soon, my friend, we''ll make them pay." My voice is laced with conviction. With one final check, I close the van''s doors, ensuring Talon is safely contained. The creature''s powerful presence fills the space. I can almost feel its anticipation mirroring my own. I start the van and exit the lab through the underground tunnels. "Let the hunt begin." Chapter 6 I sit in the van, my fingers drumming nervously on the steering wheel as I stare at the entrance to the nightclub. Kazuya and his goons are in there. I could eliminate them all right now, but the risk of one escaping is too high. And the moment a pro hero arrives, it will be more difficult to attack them and Talon would be exposed. My goal is to eliminate them one by one, and the first will be my classmate Riku. He has been following Kazuya for a long time and is a Super. His power is enhanced agility and reflexes. He can bend his body in half, and his sharp senses make him able to see any movements with clear precision. It''s not entirely a strong power, but it''s still a useful one. I need to hit him quickly and fast. Hopefully, I can get his legs to immobilize him. I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. "This is for Miyuki¡" An ad for Ember Nova caught my eye. It reminded me of the countless times Miyuki had gushed about wanting to be just like her. Miyuki was always so happy when she talked about heroes, even though I never shared that fascination. I couldn''t relate to her enthusiasm for heroism and she would probably hate me for what I am about to do. Just remembering Kazuya and his goons'' faces makes my blood boil. I can''t forgive what they did to you, Miyuki. You and I travel different paths, and I just hope we can still remain friends in the end. I spot the nightclub''s doors swinging open, and there''s Kazuya and his goons staggering out. Liquor bottles in their hands¡ªthey''re clearly drunk. I can''t help but feel a pang of disgust watching them in their inebriated state. I watch as Kazuya and his goons stumble out of the nightclub, liquor bottles in hand. Riku breaks away from the group, heading towards a convenience store. This is my chance. I need to act quickly before he rejoins the group. I start setting up the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E., carefully checking each parameter and piece of equipment to ensure everything is running as it should. I take a few deep breaths, trying to steady my nerves. My gaze falls upon Talon, and I feel a renewed sense of determination wash over me. "It''s show time," I murmur, the anticipation palpable as I prepare to merge my consciousness with my creation. I start the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E., and everything goes dark. For a moment, I feel a strange sensation, like my consciousness is being pulled away from my body. Then, I open my eyes, and the world around me looks different. I blink a few times, adjusting to the new perspective. I''m looking through Talon''s eyes now, my senses heightened, my body filled with raw power. The containment unit opens, and I step out, my footsteps heavy and deliberate. I take a moment to adjust to Talon''s movements. With a deep breath, I exit the van, ready to begin the hunt. (Riku POV) I stumble into the convenience store, my head pounding. The fluorescent lights are way too bright. Gotta get something for this hangover. I head to the medicine aisle and grab a bottle of aspirin. As I approach the counter, the cashier eyes me warily. "Rough night?" he asks, ringing me up. "You have no idea," I mutter, fishing out my wallet. I hand him a crumpled bill, snatching the change and the aspirin. "Thanks." I exit the convenience store, the aspirin bottle gripped tightly in my hand. Popping the cap, I shake a couple of pills into my palm and toss them back, wincing at the bitter taste. Looks like Kazuya and the others have already moved on to another bar. Typical. I guess they didn''t feel like waiting around for me. Not that I''m surprised - Kazuya''s never been one for patience. I shove the aspirin into my pocket and start walking, hoping the medicine will kick in soon. The pounding in my head is making it hard to think straight. I''m suddenly struck in the back of the head by something. Wincing, I whirl around, searching for the culprit. "What the¡ª?" There''s no one in sight. Rubbing the sore spot, I glare at the empty street. Just as I''m about to shrug it off, another can comes flying out of nowhere, smacking me in the shoulder. "Alright, who''s the wise guy?" I demand, scanning the area. My eyes land on a dark alleyway nearby. "Show yourself, you coward!" Another can comes hurtling towards me, and this time I duck just in time. That''s it, I''ve had enough. Confidence surging, I stride into the alley, my enhanced agility and reflexes ready to teach this joker a lesson. "Alright, punk, come out and face me!" I scan the shadowy alley, but it seems empty. Still, I can''t shake this uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Something''s not right. My heart races as I cautiously move deeper down the alley, on high alert. "Alright, punk, come out and face me!" I demand, my voice echoing in the eerie silence of the alley. The deafening quiet presses in, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I strain my ears, listening for any sound, but there''s nothing - not even the faint hum of traffic from the street. The shadows seem to loom closer, as if the darkness itself is closing in around me. A cold sweat trickles down my spine, and I can''t shake the growing sense of dread that settles in the pit of my stomach. Something is very, very wrong here. My enhanced senses are on high alert, but I can''t pinpoint the source of this overwhelming feeling of unease. I start hearing a rumbling sound grow louder, like the distant roar of a wild beast. My body goes rigid, and a chill runs down my spine. At first, I think it was just the wind playing tricks on me. But then, without warning, my legs give out from under me.The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. I hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the breath from my lungs. Panicked, I try to push myself back up, but as I glance down, a scream of pure horror escapes my lips. My legs... they''re gone. Severed clean off, lying lifeless a few feet away. Blood gushes from the ragged stumps, soaking the ground beneath me. The pain is blinding, a white-hot agony that sears through every nerve ending. I can''t tear my eyes away from the gruesome sight, my mind reeling in disbelief. This can''t be happening, it has to be some kind of twisted nightmare. But the searing pain radiating from my mutilated limbs is all too real. Panic and terror consume me as I frantically try to stem the bleeding, my hands shaking uncontrollably. The world around me blurs, and all I can focus on is the agonizing, throbbing pain. I scream and scream, my cries echoing through the desolate alley, but no one comes to my aid. A shadow covers me, and when I look up, I''m met with a sight that chills me to the core. Perched on the alley walls, its massive frame blotting out the meager light, is a towering, reptilian creature. Its glowing eyes bore into me, and a deep, rumbling growl escapes its jaws, sending shivers down my spine. I''m paralyzed by sheer terror, my heart pounding in my ears as I stare up at this monstrous being. Its dark, armored skin glistens in the dim light, and its powerful limbs flex with barely contained strength. I''ve never seen anything like it before, and the realization that I''m completely at its mercy fills me with a bone-deep dread. I scream in pure terror as I try to drag myself away, my severed legs leaving a trail of blood behind me. The pain is agonizing, but the sheer horror of this monstrous creature has me in its grip. My pants are soaked with urine, the acrid stench stinging my nostrils. Snot runs down my face in thick, glistening rivulets as I sob uncontrollably. The beast descends, its massive clawed foot slamming down on my back, pinning me to the ground. I gasp for air, my ribs and back creaking under the immense pressure. "Please! Don''t kill me!" I beg, my voice cracking with pure terror. "I don''t want to die!" The creature''s jaws open wide, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. I try to scream, but the air is crushed from my lungs as its powerful arms wrap around me, squeezing the life from my body. I can feel my bones starting to crack as the monster pulls me closer to its gaping maw. "No, no, no!" I cry, the words barely escaping my lips. Time slows to a crawl as I stare into the abyss of those cavernous jaws, my mind consumed by the realization that this is how I die. The jaws slam shut, and everything goes dark. I continue to eat Riku''s lifeless body. The sensation of biting into his flesh and bones as it slid down my throat was almost satisfying, like quenching a deep thirst. I then rinsed away the spilled blood with water, leaving no trace of what had just occurred. The alley returned to its original state, as if nothing had ever happened there. Riku''s scream had been loud, but I doubt anyone heard it over the loud noises of the city. Still, I don''t plan to stick around and find out. I quickly leave the scene, keeping to the shadows and scaling the buildings with ease. I hurry to my van, and once I''m inside, I make my way to the containment unit. I quickly climb in and seal myself inside. The S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. sequence activates, and the familiar sensation of the neural interface envelops me. In an instant, I''m back in my own body, safe and sound. I sit in the driver''s seat, my hands gripping the steering wheel as I contemplate what just occurred. Killing Riku as Talon was a surreal experience. At first, I felt a sense of satisfaction and power, finally enacting my revenge against Kazuya''s goon. The thrill of the hunt, of stalking my prey, was strangely fulfilling. But now, as the adrenaline fades, I''m left with a twinge of unease. I didn''t expect the act of taking a life to feel so...visceral. The sensation of Talon''s jaws clamping down, the crunch of bones, the warmth of blood - it''s all still so vivid in my mind. I shake my head, trying to push those images away. Riku deserved what he got for his part in hurting Miyuki. I can''t afford to feel guilt or remorse, not when I have more targets to eliminate. Kazuya and the rest of his gang will pay for their cruelty. With a deep breath, I start the van''s engine and pull out of the alley, determined to continue my mission. The power I felt as Talon was exhilarating, and I know I''ll need to wield that strength again if I''m going to take down the rest of Kazuya''s group. My grip tightens on the steering wheel as I drive, my mind racing with the next steps of my plan. I head back to my lab through the underground tunnels, my mind still reeling from what I''ve just done. As I exit the van, Cliff greets me with his usual cheerful squawks. "Eddie, Eddie! You''re back!" Cliff chirps, fluttering over to me. "Cliff missed you! Did you have fun?" I give Cliff a small smile, gently petting his head. "It was...an experience, Cliff. That''s all I could say." "Eddie, Eddie! Where''s Cliff''s snack?" Cliff asks, hopping around excitedly. I wince, suddenly remembering my promise. "Oh, um, well..." I glance around the lab, my eyes landing on the partially consumed arm in the van. "Here, Cliff. I have something special for you." I retrieve the severed limb and present it to Cliff, who examines it curiously. "Ooh, what is it?" he chirps, tilting his head. "It''s, uh, a new treat I wanted you to try," I say, trying to keep my voice even. "Go ahead, dig in." Cliff lets out an excited squawk and begins tearing into the arm, ripping off chunks of flesh and bone with his sharp beak. I watch, a twinge of guilt rising in my chest, as he devours the remains of Riku with relish. "Mmm, so good!" Cliff exclaims between bites. "Thank you, Eddie!" I force a smile, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. "I''m glad you''re enjoying it, Cliff." As Cliff continues to eat, I can''t help but wonder if I''m truly doing the right thing. I return Talon to the main containment unit in my lab, securing the creature safely inside. Checking the diagnostic monitors, I''m relieved to see that Talon is functioning normally, its vital signs stable. The process of digesting Riku''s remains appears to be progressing without any complications. I can''t shake the unease after the alley encounter. Taking Riku''s life, even a despicable one, weighs on my conscience. But I also feel satisfaction, unsure if it''s my desires or Talon''s instincts. I push those thoughts aside, reminding myself that Riku and the others deserved it for hurting Miyuki. My friend is still comatose, and I won''t rest until I''ve made Kazuya''s goons pay for their cruelty. With renewed determination, I focus on refining the S.Y.N.A.P.S.E. and strengthening my connection to Talon. I step into Miyuki''s hospital room, the sterile smell of disinfectant hitting my nose. My heart sinks as I see her lying there, so still and pale. I pull up a chair beside her bed, taking her hand in mine. "Hey, Miyuki. It''s me, Eddie." I give her hand a gentle squeeze, wishing she would open her eyes and flash me that bright smile of hers. "School was...well, you know, the usual. Kazuya and his goons were being jerks as always." I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "But you know what''s exciting? Ember Nova just got a new action figure! I saw it at the store the other day. It has this cool flame effect and everything. I bet you''d love it." I lean in closer, searching her face for any sign of recognition. "I really wish you could see it. You''re always the one who gets so hyped about that kind of stuff." I grab her hand. Miyuki, I killed one of Kazuya''s friends yesterday. The one who attacked you. You might not forgive me, and that''s understandable. You know, it''s funny - I didn''t feel much remorse about it. In fact, I liked it. I don''t know if it''s because of Talon or if I''ve always been this way. The thought of being a crazy person is pretty scary. I don''t want to say too much in case you overhear, but I can promise you one thing - Kazuya is going to get what''s coming to him. "I hope you wake up soon, Miyuki." I linger by her bedside, wishing she would open her eyes and flash me that bright smile of hers. Leaving the room, I feel a renewed sense of purpose. I won''t stop until I make things right.
