《War in the Afterlife》 Chapter 1 Welcome back Max You have been dead foriiiyears. Stored spirit energy has exceeded maximum capacity by 500%. Increase level to access more spirit energy. Level: 1 Current usable spirit energy: 100/100 I''m dead? Flashes of memories bombard my mind. The hospital, the pain, the blood. I wince remembering my death. They say driving cars is one of the most dangerous things you can do, but you forget when driving is just a daily occurrence. How many years have I been dead? All I can remember after my death are fuzzy moments of complete insanity. It does seem like the afterlife system I created worked. Though I don''t remember adding things like spirit energy or levels. What even is spirit energy? The system I originally created was designed to keep memories after death. Storing them and releasing them into the soul using electromagnetic signals. It seems like someone added to my experiment. The system seems more like a video game than I remember. Before I died I programmed it to place words in your mind giving as much of a guide to navigating death as I could. Though as I had never spoken to someone dead before, most of the guide was to be created after my death. Now, however, the words appear in my sight like a screen. Levels and spirit energy. I have never even heard of spirit energy, and what does levels have to do with anything? My experiments on haunted buildings gave me a grasp on how ghosts work. It''s simple really, the older the ghost is, the stronger. For example, if someone was saying their grandma, who died last month, was watching them sleep, an EMF reader would be at a two. While the ghosts of the haunted prison from the eighteen hundreds would be a five and probably try to throw things at you. Death from ghosts is actually pretty rare. I wonder if someone can detect me with an electromagnetic field reader? If they still exist. Curious, I started playing with the system window. Shoving the system to the side makes it disappear. Willing it to appear makes it pop up. Max Level: 1 Spirit energy: 100/100 Class: Unassigned Skills: Unavailable Hmm lets see, ¡®skills¡¯ I mentally speak. Nothing happens, hmm maybe ¡®inbox?¡¯ Inbox: empty Dismissing the system, I finally look up from the system window. I was in the middle of an abandoned shop. The large area filled with debris and rotting furniture. Reaching down to touch an old dirty green couch my hand passes right through it. Oh right, the dead thing. I can see through my hand I always thought that a ghost to a ghost would look solid but¡ The best part about being dead is that instead of going around the piles of trash littering the ground I can just walk through it. That was until I saw a large black blob of rotting trash. No way am I walking through that. Finally making it to the door I take my first steps outside as an unbodied soul. It was clear that this wasn''t the best part of town. It looked overpopulated, though I couldn''t see any people. The buildings were small like mobile homes stacked on top of each other like makeshift apartments. With the exception of larger warehouse type buildings, probably just businesses. ¡°What you doing there old man?¡± a gravelly and sinister voice draws my attention. The man looked to be in his twenties. He was buff, had short grey hair and wore baggy clothes in black and dark grey. He was mostly see through like me, but what caught my attention was that he was flying. Just floating in the air above me. ¡°Who are you calling old, I''m barely middle aged.¡± I replied. Stroking my slightly greying beard to confirm this. The man drops down from the sky. ¡°What are you wearing?¡± he asks, looking me up and down. ¡°You mean my lab coat, jeans, and the fancy blue shirt underneath?¡± ¡°Umm, it looks like you went to Walmart, threw on anything that fits, then put a lab coat over it to hide the mess.¡± he said, settling on the ground. The man holds his hand out. Thinking he wants to shake hands, I reach out. Upon touching his hand I feel a shock run through my hand and into my body, stunning me. The man cackles, removes his hand and pulls out a long knife from behind his back. Why can''t I move? I try to move but my arms are stiff. I try willing any muscle I can to do something, but the only thing I can do is look around. The man is now holding his knife at my neck. Can a ghost even get shanked? The man probably sees the confused look on my face. ¡°This won''t kill you permanently, unless you run out of energy. You will just respawn.¡± He said, ¡°but, everytime you die you leave behind a spirit energy that I can absorb.¡± Huh, so he can just absorb my spirit energy? Why do I have to be dead or whatever a spirit would call dying, for him to absorb it. This time the man didn¡¯t speak, instead slowly shoving the knife into my throat. The knife didn¡¯t hurt. It was very uncomfortable. It felt like a sore that reached bone deep; the feeling was like something in my core was being broken down. The man looks confused as he cuts deeper. The confusion grows as he pulls the knife out and stabs me somewhere else.Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there. Skill unlocked Rapid Regeneration level:1 Passive Regenerate 10 spirit energy a second as long as you have overloaded spirit energy. The screen pops up. Wait, is it saying that I regenerate for being low level and having tons of excess energy? Are skills usually this easy to gain? Or does it have something to do with having an absurd amount of energy for my level? Willing the system to disappear removes it from my sight. ¡°Hmm you must have some kind of regeneration, rare but that won''t matter. If I charge up a big enough attack.¡± The man said while generating a ball of lightning that doubles in size every ten seconds. ¡°I don''t like bullies,¡± a man said. His voice was much smoother than the man with the knife. Looking at the new guy with the side of my eye. The man''s lanky frame gave an appearance of weakness. He wore casual clothes, blue jeans and a navy blue shirt. His hair¡ was also blue. Okay, that''s a little too much blue. Hold on, I strain my eyes to look down at his shoes. Black and red Nikes. Good. ¡°Who are you?¡± the knife man spat, still channeling his lightning ball. ¡°Names Alex,¡± the blue man answered. ¡°Well Alex, take this!¡± The knife man turns and launches the lightning ball at the lanky man. I close my eyes at the bright light coming from my left. Opening my eyes Alex and the knife guy are right in front of me. ¡°Leave¡± Alex demands. ¡°Like hell I will, do you know who I work for?¡± knife man asks ¡°No one is important given the fact you are bullying new spirits.¡± Knife man points at Alex and a small bolt of lightning flashes from his finger tip. Alex side steps the lightning and summons a massive great sword from thin air. The sword was just as tall and wide as the man wielding it. The size didn''t seem to hinder Alex as he swung. Slicing the knife man in half with one blow. Knife man disappears leaving a slight glow where he used to be. As soon as the knife man was gone the stun effect wore off. Alex reaches out and the glow flows into his outstretched hand. When all the glowing substance Alex absorbs is gone he walks up to me. ¡°Are you alright, new spirit?¡± Alex asks. ¡°Ya I''m alright, how do you know I''m a new spirit?¡± I am confused by all the new experiences today. Now it''s time to get some answers. ¡°Well it''s the way you look.¡± Alex answers. ¡°What do you mean?¡± ¡°Lets go to my place this isn''t the most comfortable place to speak.¡± Alex begins walking, continuing the path he was taking when he ran into the knife man. ¡°So what does my looks have to do with anything? The other guy called me old. I would assume there would be lots of old people in the afterlife?¡± I ask while following Alex. ¡°It''s about spirit energy. Spirit energy can be used for anything. If you use about eighty to ninety spirit energy you can change the way you look.¡± ¡°Does that include clothes?¡± ¡°It does, now that you¡¯re dead the only way to change clothes is to use spirit energy.¡± ¡°What even is spirit energy?¡± ¡°Umm, that''s hard to explain. I don''t completely understand it. But umm, it''s the stuff you use if you want to do something. That''s how I made my sword. It''s made out of spirit energy.¡± ¡°What about that guy''s lightning?¡± ¡°That''s a little different. He turns his spirit energy into the lightning element.¡± ¡°That sounds like a pain to have to manually change energy¡± ¡°It''s not that difficult because of the system. Once you gain the class for lightning elemental, or something else with lightning, the system converts it for you. The same can be said for the other elements like fire and water.¡± ¡°How do you gain classes and skills?¡± ¡°Curious aren''t you, but that will have to wait. We are here.¡± Alex leads me up the driveway of a light brown two story house. The house looked to be about three bedrooms. With all the other necessities for the living. The inside looks homey, lived in but well organised. Tons of stuff littered every wall, in either picture frames or shelves. To the right of the door is a living room. An old brown couch sits opposite of a blank wall where a tv should be. To the left was a stairway leading up. Opposite of the living room was a kitchen, where a table had two plates of spaghetti on it. ¡°Welcome back honey,¡± a red headed woman steps out of the kitchen. ¡°Whos this?¡± ¡°I found someone beating on him while heading home.¡± Alex answers. ¡°Can I speak to you for a sec?¡± she said. Alex walks over and they argue in hushed tones. ¡°You didn¡¯t tell me you were bringing company or I would have gotten more food.¡± she started. ¡°I didn¡¯t know I was going to bring someone until just a moment ago.¡± Alex said ¡°And that reminds me you said you weren''t going to fight anymore.¡± ¡°I can¡¯t just let someone be bullied in front of me.¡± Well this is awkward, do I just let them keep going or ask a question. I never know what to do in these situations. My life was spent studying the supernatural, not socializing. ¡°Uhem¡± Alex cleared his through earning a glare from the women. ¡°This is my wife Emily. Oh I forgot to ask your name. My name¡¯s Alex.¡± ¡°Hello Emily, Alex, I¡¯m Max.¡± ¡°Well, it''s nice to meet you Max¡± she said ¡°would you like to join us for dinner?¡± ¡°Spirits can eat?¡± I ask. I always thought the dead wouldn¡¯t need to eat. ¡°Well it''s not necessary, but it tastes good.¡± Alex answers while sitting down at the table. ¡°Are you sure?¡± I ask, ¡°it sounded like you guys don''t have much food.¡± ¡°Don¡¯t worry about it, my husband will be happy to share some with you. Right?¡± Emily said, glaring at Alex. ¡°He''s right we don''t have much...¡± Alex began. ¡°Right Alex? You will share, right?¡± the glare intensifying. ¡°Right dear,¡± Alex gave in with a shoulder slump.
¡°Thanks for the food.¡± I say instinctually leaning back as if full. ¡°Its weird how I don''t get full.¡± ¡°Tell me about it, but at least we don''t get fat.¡± Alex agreed. ¡°You can stay here tonight. Not that you need sleep but it''s nice to have a quiet place to think.¡± ¡°I think I''ll take you up on that offer.¡± Alex walks down the hall left of the entry and opens a door. Stepping into the room I notice it''s a boys bedroom. In the right corner was a queen sized bed. A desk with multiple papers of what I could assume was high school homework. The dresser was sloppy, clothes hanging out, but at least the floor was clean. ¡°Let me know if you have more questions.¡± ¡°I think I have enough to think about for right now.¡± Since my head''s spinning with questions I should narrow them down. Before I kill this guy with overload. After Alex leaves I move to sit down at the desk, falling straight through the chair. Oh right, the dead thing. What has happened since my death. I designed the system but it''s been added to, Changed even. My goal was to create a guide after my death. What am I supposed to do now that someone beat me to it? ¡°What should I do now? My after-life goal has been stolen.¡± My heart drops at the thought. Ping I jump at the sudden noise. What''s this? Self added quest Dead men tell the best tales: Discover a way to speak to the dead. As I watch the window the message distorts, changing the words. Self added quest has been changed Dead men tell the best tales: Discover a way to speak to the living. Chapter 2 Right, I almost forgot about the quest that I added to the system. I wanted to see if I could make the system work while I was alive. No dice. I wanted to speak to the dead for mostly two reasons. One, I have never found any believable stories about someone speaking to the dead. I wanted to be the first to ever accomplish the feet and record the results. Two I wanted to get information about the afterlife to develop my system even further. Lets see if the system can give me any information about the mysterious I would find myself in. Max Level: 1 Spirit energy: 100/100 Class: Unassigned Skills: Rapid Regeneration ¡®What am I made out of?¡¯ Max Level: 1 Spirit energy: 100/100 Class: Unassigned Skills: Rapid Regeneration Ya, didn''t think that would work ¡®Administrator¡¯. Administrator privileges Passward [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] Hmm lets see¡ oh how about my old password. ¡®Captain¡¯. Captain was going to be my name for the system. but I decided the system was more self explanatory. Admin permissions now active Admin Search Vote Contacts System settings They really kept the same password. I mean. I was dead for who knows how long before the afterlife was integrated with the system. So, they probably thought I was lost in the void. Let''s see. I reach my hand out to touch system settings. My hand goes right through. I don''t think this is a dead thing. The system was designed to be mental so I think the screen is just in my eyes. Alright then ¡®system settings¡¯. System settings General Spirit memories Spirit energy Level I spend some time going through some of the settings. General setting is where you can change how the system operates. Size, speed, and many other minor details. Selecting anything in the general settings gives a message. System settings Must get 4 out of 10 votes from the originals to change system speed. Are these the controls for the entire system? Maybe they need to vote on things for a check and balance or something. Are the originals the ones that changed my system? I''ll ask Alex later. Going back to system settings I select levels. System settings Must get 10 out of 10 votes from the originals to be permitted level access. Selecting memories and spirit energy gives me a similar message. Most of that was useless. It did give me some information though. Mostly about these originals, and that fact I need their permission to change things. ¡°Hey my wife made¡¡± Alex began barging through the door literally he just walked straight through. ¡°Why are you sitting in a chair?¡± Looking up I notice I''m resting on the floor, my head is sitting a little over the seat of the office chair. The rest of me was in the wheels or base. ¡°I went to sit down and fell right through.¡± I feel a little embarrassed. ¡° I think I can give you a few tips.¡± Alex chuckled. I can''t help but give him a slight glare before standing up. ¡°Sorry,¡± he chuckled again. ¡°You were saying something about tips?¡± ¡°Oh right, if you use your spirit energy to fill your body you can interact with stuff. But, it does use up spirit energy so be careful not to use all of it.¡± ¡°What happens if someone uses all their spirit energy?¡± ¡°They disappear. It''s what spirits call death, when you run out of energy and disappear into the void.¡± ¡°How come I could sit and eat at the table with you and Emily but not this chair?¡± ¡°That is because it gets annoying to have to use spirit energy in order to touch every little thing. Now we have begun infusing things with spirit energy. This allows us to interact without needing to fill ourselves with spirit energy.¡± That makes sense. Instead of having to constantly be draining spirit energy in order to touch something. Someone can buy things that already have spirit energy in them. ¡°Why didn''t I see anyone alive while I was outside?¡± ¡°That is because we are not in their world. We are in an astral realm, they are in a real one. If we use spirit energy we can influence things in the real world. But that takes energy and tipping a bottle over doesn''t really mean much. If people saw that they would just assume a small earthquake or their cat.¡± ¡°What are the originals?¡± I ask.Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon. Alex frowns briefly ¡°how do you know about the originals?¡± ¡°Knife man said something about them.¡± I lied Alex, now confused, answers, ¡°the originals are the people who designed the system. This was centuries before I was even born. When did the knife man say that?¡± ¡°Something about the difference in power between old and new spirits or something,¡± I lied again. It could get complicated if he knew I could access the systems admin privileges. ¡°Oh right, here¡± Alex, who I hadn''t realized was holding something, hands me a cup. ¡°My wife made some juice.¡± ¡°Thanks¡± I take a sip. I was half expecting it to be mysterious like the new world I''m in. But it''s just some orange juice. pretty good though. ¡°Find any questions?¡± Alex asks. ¡°How do I change my appearance? It would get annoying if everytime I go outside someone calls me old and attempts to attack me.¡± ¡°Very true. Channel about forty to fifty spirit energy into yourself and think about each part that you want to change.¡± ¡°Alright.¡± Channeling spirit energy is easier than I thought it would be. It was natural, all I had to do was will it where I wanted it. Willing about sixty spirit energy into my entire body, I decided to go from top to bottom. Starting with my hair I decided to keep it slightly long and black just above my eyes. Spirit energy 90//100 For my face I decided a clean shaven twenty something would be nice. Spirit energy 80/100 Hmm¡ what shirt would go well with a lab coat. black wouldn''t be bad. Might as well make the pants a darker blue jean. This gives a kind of professional and casual feel to it like a doctor or businessman, with a lab coat. Either way it mixes professionalism with casualness. Spirit energy 60/100 For the shoes let''s just go some black slip ons. Spirit energy 55/100 ¡°Interesting look you''re going for.¡± Alex commented. ¡°Kind of like a mad scientist.¡± ¡°I was going for more of a causal professionalism but mad scientist has an appeal of its own.¡± Turning my gaze on Alex. ¡°Speaking of looks, why all the blue?¡± ¡°A few reasons. One, blue always gives a feeling of peace. Not to mention I just like blue.¡± ¡°Alex, I have a few questions.¡± ¡°Ask away, no promises I can answer all of them.¡± Talking to Alex answered a lot of questions. Turns out getting stabbed doesn''t kill you. The only way for a spirit to die is if they completely run out of spirit energy. The only way to hurt a spirit is to disperse their bodies with energy. All that does is break them allowing them to reform somewhere else like some kind of respawn. To keep it simple people just call it resurrection. Everytime someone resurrects they lose some spirit energy. Absorbing this spirit energy allows people to grow stronger. It''s kind of a weird process. You stab someone, eat their soul and get stronger by doing so. ¡°I think I''m going to take a walk. Get a feel for this new world,¡± I say walking towards the door. Emily who is now sitting on the couch offered, ¡°you are welcome to come back and stay with us for a while.¡± She takes a sip of orange juice before placing it on her knee. She wore blue jeans with an oversized red sweatshirt that complements her red hair and eyes. ¡°We get bored, teaching a new spirit might be fun,¡± Alex added. Going out the door I decided to head the opposite way from where I ran into knife guy. This world is strange. It''s almost empty. Every now and then I would spot a mostly see-through person walking down the road or entering a building. It lacked all the usual noise and population of a city. As I got deeper into town I noticed differences from what I''m used to. Many cars looked unusual, most a different type or brand than I remember there being. All of them electric. It appeared as if Tesla took over car manufacturing for the entire country. Most sleek with a kind of rounded look. It wasn''t just the cars either; the roads were more clean and smooth. Usually they are filled with cracks. It''s possible this road is new but everywhere I look I see the same perfection. ¡°How long have I been dead?¡± I monologue while walking around a corner. ¡°Doesn''t really matter, you''re going to be dead again soon.¡± A familiar sinister voice draws my attention. He is standing directly in front of me. With him a small gang of around five guys. A few were carrying swords. ¡°Knife guy?¡± I ask. ¡°Who? My name is Jack,¡± knife guy responds. ¡°Huh, must be the wrong guy then.¡± I say beginning to walk past them. ¡°Wait,¡± Jack steps in front of me blocking my path. ¡°It has to be you.¡± ¡°No, I think you have the wrong guy. I have never seen you before in my life.¡± Jack looks confused. ¡°You just called me a knife guy.¡± ¡°Did I? Must have been a mistake.¡± I plaster on the best confused look I could muster. ¡°Jack, I''m not sure this is the guy.¡± A big bald man wearing¡ Kung fu clothes? That''s the best way I could describe the robes. They had pictures of people fighting and martial arts moves covering the entire thing. ¡°It''s the guy, who else would wear a lab coat?¡± Jack spat. ¡°Didn''t you say he was old?¡± another said. This one was shorter, had messy blond hair and a casual look to him. ¡°So he figured out how to change his appearance.¡± Jack counters. ¡°Let''s jump him and take his energy.¡± ¡°But we are out here to take revenge, we should get the right guy.¡± Kung fu robes said. ¡°I''m the one. who saw this guy. I am. Saying. this. is. the guy.¡± Jack said, biting off his words. ¡°Now that''s not the proper way to remove your enemies.¡± Another man wearing a black suit and tie walks up from behind Jack. ¡°Boss,¡± all six say at once. ¡°Put these on him and take him back to base.¡± Jack''s boss hands the crew a pair of handcuffs. ¡°Boss, these are highly illegal.¡± Jack said. ¡°It''s fine, just don''t get caught.¡± the boss said. ¡°Now cuff him and bring him back.¡± Not wanting to go on a field trip, I immediately turn around and make a run for it. Turns out I''m slow. Jack now glowing slightly with a yellow hue flashes in front of me at superhuman speeds. I barely had enough time to blink. My attempts at throwing a punch are sidestepped. It didn''t take much after that to be surrounded, cuffed and dragged down the road. Now in a small room and cuffed with spirit energy infused cuffs I can''t just pass right through. The chair I''m on is similarly solid. Well, this might be a great introduction to the world. if. This is what it''s like. ¡°Boss, isn''t this a little far for killing Jack earlier?¡± Blondy asks. ¡°One, he saw your face, if he wants revenge someday that could cause a problem in the future. We still have business to do. Being outlaws would only hurt us. Besides we already got him in spirit infused handcuffs.¡± ¡°That''s the thing, boss. If we didn''t put him in handcuffs, we might not be breaking important laws.¡± ¡°It''s about reputation, killing a new spirit isn''t an issue because they would just resurrect. But, coming at him again makes us look obsessive. We lost to a new spirit now you go after him again in broad daylight of all times.¡± Boss scolds. ¡°But it wasn''t this spirit that killed me.¡± Jack said. Sounding sheepish ¡°That doesn''t matter. All people will remember is you attacked a new spirit and failed.¡± Boss¡¯s frustration was obvious. And here I thought listening to Alex and Emily argue was awkward. How am I supposed to get out of this? I can feel the energy in the cuffs. This energy feels like glue. It sticks to the cuffs before hardening. I can still use spirit energy. I can infuse my hand with it but that doesn''t do anything. The spirit energy of the cuffs doesn''t react at all. ¡°Alright, I created a barrier. His energy shouldn¡¯t be able to escape the barrier so he should resurrect in that same chair. we can kill him however many times it takes.¡± Boss says, stepping back, ¡°Jack you''re up.¡± Like hell I''m dying again. Lets see about these cuffs. The cuffs are infused with energy. Spirits like to manipulate energy. Why can¡¯t I just... Using my spirit energy I try to stick it to the energy in the cuffs. Nothing happens, my spirit energy feels like it''s poking a solid rock. Jack now closes the distance, knife in hand. Before he looked uneasy. At first I thought it was because he was about to kill a man in cold blood. But now with the slight glee in his eyes, it was about getting in trouble with the boss. The boss must be high up in the scumbag ladder. All the lackeys look nervous when asking questions. He''s getting close, probably the last chance I have to figure this shit out. The only thing I can think of is controlling the spirit energy in the cuff. But how do I do that? The only spirit energy I can control is my own. People have to infuse them somehow. Do they just shove their energy in it and never touch it again? I bet they have a way. Jack now in the barrier raises his knife and cuts me straight down the middle. My body gave little resistance. He cut so fast and deep my regeneration skill didn''t have time to activate. Why didn''t he do that the first time? Maybe to show off? Spirit energy 30/100 That actually hurt a bit. more like stubbing a toe hurt but the feeling of being torn apart without pain was odd. But I think I figured something out. Why can''t I use others'' spirit energy? They are both spirit energy, or so I thought. To infuse an item with spirit energy you have to make it like glue. Like the chair for example. To make it, someone has to turn their spirit energy into a sticky substance and cover the entire chair in it. Same with the handcuffs. If I mold my spirit energy to be exactly like the cuffs, I should be able to touch it. Studying the cuffs I mentally mark every detail about the spirit energy. All the while Jack is raising his knife. The spirit energy is hard to my touch but sticky to the cuffs. Molding my spirit energy into a similar makeup has no effect. What am I missing? I feel a slight energy emanate from it. Different from spirit energy it''s some kind of sub element like Jack''s electricity. Probably a craftsman or some other class specific energy. Either way it doesn''t matter. I force my spirit energy into something new. It''s not spirit energy it feels different. Like its purpose is durability. Shoving my new energy into the cuffs I feel the two stick together. Like glue they fuse. I use the new energy to move the substance from the top of the cuffs. The cuffs fall and I immediately jump out of the chair. Missing the knife coming down by a hair''s breadth. Not waiting for the other spirits to regain themselves I use twenty spirit energy to form a katana. The first sword I could think of. Spirit energy 10/100 No more second chances, one death and that''s it. The event took less than a second. grabbing my sword I head straight for the boss. Cutting off their leadership should stagger them. The surprise on the boss''s face was evident. It took only a step for me to close the distance. In that time he had summoned a sword of his own. The boss¡¯s black, long sword made an attempt to block. The long blade and the close proximity to me was just a little too slow. My sword slashing through him. The boss is now disappearing. I turn my attention to the lackeys. Three of the lackeys summon a variety of swords while the others start forming power between their hands. Jack, using his speed, zips behind me and aims a strike at my back. Not even glancing at him, I dash towards the lackey that was growing a fireball in his hands. The little room, not taking many steps to close the distance to the spirit. Striking him the spirit disappears leaving behind a slight glow. The other mage immediately ran back cowering behind the two sword wielders. Reaching my hand out I begin absorbing the energy lingering in the air. Spirit energy 20/100 One more and I might be able to resurrect. Chapter 3 Lawrence is frustrated, mostly anxious but frustrated. He sighs, as he walks down the red carpeted halls. Not only had some unknown person accessed the administrator section of the system, but Marco lost significant resources in an attempt to remove a slight annoyance. He claimed it was the fault of one crew member. Jack was his name if remembered correctly. But now Lawrence has to report this problem to Victor, one of the Originals. The same Victor who is also a member of the ruling council. Lawrence stops at a fancy wood double door. The dark oak and intricate design made him nervous to even touch it. Glancing at the few papers he was holding. He fixes his tie and takes a deep breath before pushing the doors open. Stepping into the vast room gave him a feeling. A feeling of smallness. Like being tiny in comparison to a giant. Which Lawrance assumes is the point. In the middle of the room is a desk. The desk elevated slightly. Sitting at the desk was a man. The man was large, muscular. Middle aged, judging by his greying and trimmed beard. His hair was brushed back, giving a professional appearance. His exquisite suit and tie added to the image. ¡°Speak.¡± the man demanded. ¡°Yes, Victor,¡± Lawrence responded, his face a practiced blank, appearing calm and confident. Victor only glares, a look that makes anyone under it feel like an insect waiting to be squished for its insolence of entering one¡¯s home. ¡°I have two things that need to be brought to your attention. First, someone has accessed the system admin permission.¡± Lawrence began. ¡°So, the Originals access it all the time.¡± Victor said, his practiced glare morphing into one of slight confusion. ¡°Yes, but the admin privileges were not accessed by any of the Originals. We have confirmed this using the system logs.¡± Victor''s face gets red, clearly enraged at the thought of someone else accessing powers that should only belong to a few. ¡°What did they do?¡± Victor asks in a tone beginning to boil over. ¡°Nothing sir, it seems they were stopped by the voting in system settings. Luckily they haven''t found any of the ways to change their system. We should still have control over their memories and system faculties.¡± ¡°Good, do we know who it is?¡± Victor asks, sounding more calm. Lawrence can''t help but think about Victor''s childish mood swings. He hesitates before speaking, ¡°no, we don''t know who it is. As you know we can''t see names of admin users until they register their system as part of our organization.¡± Victor''s face grows dark ¡°Put whoevers available on it¡± he said, voice flat. ¡°Yes sir, but due to the efforts in the east our forces are significantly limited.¡± Lawrance showed no reaction to Victor''s sudden tone change. For Lawrance, Victor''s tone changes are as common and frequent as flowing water. ¡°Send Lockland¡± Victor holds his hands in front of his face appearing contemplative. ¡°But Lockland doesn''t understand the word restraint.¡± For the first time in the conversation Lawrance''s natural face changes into one of surprise. ¡°He might destroy half the town. If that were to happen it will have a negative influence on our control of the area, it may even push people to join the enemy.¡± Lawrence continued. ¡°We need to find them before the other Originals do. This outsider, if used correctly, may bring about a shift in power.¡± ¡°I fail to see how this outsider is so important.¡± Lawrence asks, face now back to its usual neutrality. ¡°Think about it, this outsider has the ability to access admin privileges, only Originals can have access.¡± ¡°You think they are another Original?¡± ¡°Hahaha, that would be ridiculous, Originals are those like me, who were part of the company that designed the system. Before we died we had a device implanted in our bodies that gives us special privileges.¡± ¡°Like access to admin privileges.¡± Lawrence said, finishing Victor''s thought. ¡°Exactly.¡± ¡°But, I''m still confused about one thing. If they can access admin then why can''t they be an Original?¡± ¡°I''m not sure, but I know every Original and each one received one of the devices. We also kept records of everything like materials bought, used, or broken so I don''t think it''s possible he has one. My best guess is he hacked it while he was alive or created his own device, though it''s unlikely.¡± ¡°The system has impossible security. It''s not feasible that anyone is able to hack it.¡± ¡°Which is why I don''t know how they''re doing it. We must find whoever this is in order to answer that question.¡±Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation. ¡°Yes sir.¡± Lawrence begins to walk out before he glances down at the papers he was carrying. On the top is a report regarding Marco¡¯s mistakes. Shit. ¡°um, sir.¡± ¡°Speak.¡± Victor ordered, reminding Lawrance of the first problem he had to bring up just minutes earlier. ¡°This is about the other topic I was needing to bring to your attention. Marco and his crew lost a significant amount of spirit energy in a fight yesterday.¡± ¡°Who?¡± ¡°Marco, one of the men you had bully new spirits in hope they would join our cause to gain the power we offer.¡± ¡°Right the project I put in place to bring in new spirits with a desire for strength. So one of my subordinates lost a fight. Why aren''t they fighting new spirits as ordered?¡± ¡°It''s a story but to put it simply they kidnapped a new spirit using handcuffs¡¡± ¡°They what?¡± Victor exclaimed, cutting Lawrance off, "their job is to kill them once, maybe twice, not kidnap them using a restricted item!¡± He roared. ¡°They kidnapped a new spirit and attempted to remove them permanently. The new spirit broke out of the hand cuffs and proceeded to kill them.¡± ¡°Impossible. The only ones who can remove the energy from cuffs are the ones with classes designed for the task. He didn''t have one of those classes, right?¡± ¡°No, judging by the way he manipulates energy according to the report, it sounds like he has a unique class.¡± ¡°A unique class. Only Originals can give someone a unique class. Keep an eye on this guy, he may have powerful backers.¡± ¡°Sir.¡± ¡°That was stressful,¡± Max monologues. I wasn''t expecting to make it out alive. I was lucky enough to catch two of them off guard, Even more lucky that all of them except Jack were scrubs. Encountering them was unlucky, yet surviving was pure luck and not much else. Max internally chuckles at the duality of it all. In that small room the door was blocked by three men with swords, one with a knife and lightning powers, and one more beginning to grow a ball of water in his hands. It had all been luck. The luckiest part however was gaining a class after absorbing the fire mage¡¯s spirit energy. You have received the unique class energy manipulator. You have the ability to manipulate energy outside of yourself. You may transform your spirit energy into whatever form of energy you desire. Accept Yes/No ¡®Yes¡¯ absolutely yes. The second I agree I can feel the spirit energy in the air around me. Trying to draw it into myself does nothing. The Kung fu guy charges at me aiming a foot to my mid section. Dodging, I try to figure out this new power before I''m overwhelmed by numbers. I grab ahold of the spirit energy in the air. I grab as much as I can, only about two or three feats worth. Moving the energy to my arm I spread it out before squeezing it together. It hardens making a see through barrier, with numerous small lines of static electricity jolting through it. Moving my arm around the barrier stays in place. My idea was to make a shield, guess it''s only stationary, and temporary as I watch it disappear. Well this can at least help me block attacks. The mage in the back flattens the water ball and launches it. The water blade whips through the air at speed. Forming a barrier, I watch the water blade smash into it shattering the shield and dispersing the water blade. The water blade made out of energy soaks everyone in the room. Now soaked, Jack looks angry; he uses his lightning speed and dashes at me knife in hand. Swinging the knife down at blinding speed, I jump away. Falling back was what Jack was waiting for. He points his finger and a bolt of lightning flashes from his finger tip. Not able to dodge as fast as Alex, I form another barrier. The barrier is not able to handle the power, it shatters. The lightning bolt not done hits me in the last millisecond, stunning me. Jack walked up to me with his knife. ¡°Not so tough without a surprise are you?¡± Ignoring him I focus on the lighting energy filling my body. It''s wild, crazy, bouncing around my body. Ignoring the ground entirely. It''s strange, lightning likes to go from wherever you touch it to your heart then the ground. Plus I don''t have muscles to freeze so why would I be stunned. I have an idea. Filling my body with spirit energy has an interesting effect. It kicks some of the lightning out of my body like there isn''t room for it. But, that doesn''t get all of it out. I don''t have enough spirit energy. Guess I''ll try my new ability. Mentally reaching in I try to take hold of the lightning energy. Just like with the cuffs, I can''t. Guess I''ll try the same thing as I did with the cuffs. Focusing on the spirit energy while ignoring the snickers and jabs from the bozos gathering around me. I study the lightning feeling, how it moves and its consistency. Changing my spirit energy into an energy exactly like the lightning I take hold of it. The lightning became more consistent and tame. The stun effect neutralized, I stood up, body filled with all the lightning elements I could manage. The world slowed, not much but enough. slowly, or maybe it''s my speed, their faces turn to surprise, again. Sword in hand I slice at Jack first. Jack¡¯s reflexes as fast as lightning dodges. Next target Kung fu guy, who is standing right next to Jack, takes the full hit. Dispersed into nothing, leaving behind a faint glow. Not giving up my advantage, I swung three more times leaving only Jack and I with a room full of glowing fog. Jack reaches out a hand and before he can absorb any energy, I grab it. Pulling the energy away from Jack, I begin absorbing it myself. Spirit energy 100/150 Spirit energy is one fifty? Maybe I leveled up? Returning my attention to Jack he looked confused. I have to admit that confusion suits him well. The way he looks makes confusion natural on that face like it belongs. Deciding that leaving would be beneficial, I started backing up, stepping towards the door. Jack notices, he flashes to block the door. The smug look on his face makes him so punchable. So I threw a punch, this one much faster than the first time. The punch assisted by now one hundred spirit energies worth of lightning element. The speed not even my eyes could spot. In one second there was my hand and jack blocking the door. The next no jack, an area filled with glowing fog, and my arm disintegrating in an electric filled burn. Spirit energy 30/150 Maybe I went overboard. Can I regrow my arm? Looking at my missing arm I decide to throw spirit energy at the problem. Shoving around ten into where my arm should be it grows back good as new¡ I wonder if Emily is going to make dinner again? I thought, while absorbing Jack''s energy and exiting the small, gloomy room. Spirit energy 40/155 Chapter 4 ¡°Damn that''s good, thanks a ton for the food Emily.¡± I comment. ¡°Oh it''s no problem,¡± Emily said. grabbing the plate in front of me and adding it to the small stack in her hands. ¡°So you took down an entire group of lowlifes by yourself, how in the afterlife did you do that?¡± Alix asks. ¡°I got a class that allows me to manipulate energy.¡± I say. ¡°That must be some class,¡± Emily adds while walking into the kitchen and starts doing dishes. ¡°Yes it must, what kind of class is it?¡± Alix asks. ¡°It''s called Energy Manipulator. I can basically use any form of energy I want. I can also use spirit energy from the air,¡± I answer. Playing with a napkin, folding and unfolding it in different ways. ¡°Energy Manipulator?¡± Alix says, looking thoughtful for a moment before continuing, ¡° how did you get a class like that?¡± ¡°I don''t even know how to get classes to begin with. I just got a ping from the system and accepted it, I didn''t really have another choice.¡± ¡°You get classes by doing things or making something. For example, by making my sword I unlocked Warrior and Swordsman classes, I declined both. but after I defeated a powerful enemy with my sword, I got the Sword Master class.¡± ¡°I should have gotten sword classes for making a katana?¡± ¡°Yes, but I think something else you did triggered your class to appear instead of the others.¡± Looking back I guess the obvious answer would be when I removed the energy off the handcuffs. I can''t think of anything else that could trigger getting a class that manipulates energy. Some things are not right here. If energy manipulation allows me to manipulate energy outside of myself, and regardless of element type then how did I interact with the handcuffs at all. When I broke the handcuffs I didn''t have a class yet. ¡°I think It was when I broke the handcuffs, but I¡¯m not sure how I could have without the class.¡± ¡°Usually people have to start from the beginning when gaining an elemental class. Like Jack for example, he had to start by forming slight amounts of lightning in his body. It would take days for him to make progress. When most of his spirit energy was lightning he probably unlocked the class Lightning or something similar.¡± ¡°So to turn my spirit energy into an elemental energy that would take days?¡± ¡°More like weeks. It would take weeks to turn your spirit energy into one that can remove energy from the handcuffs. Did it say how rare your class was?¡±Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site. ¡°It said it was a unique class.¡± ¡°A unique class?¡± Alix looked surprised before changing into a slight frown, his blue eyes lowering to the table in thought. ¡°Yes, ¡° I say hesitantly. ¡°Is that bad?¡± ¡°Well it''s rare for someone to gain a unique class. Usually unique classes can only be given to those an Original deems worthy. ¡°So then how did I gain one?¡± ¡°Unless you know an Original, I have no clue. Of course you could have tricked me, playing pretend newbie and fooled me into letting you in.¡± Alix says, staring me down¡ ¡°but that would be very unlikely, a plan like that would be unreliable. Even if they could guess I would do something like letting you stay with us. Even then there is no guarantee I would walk by that exact path on that exact day.¡± ¡°So¡ you think an Original gave me this class?¡± ¡°I doubt it, but I can''t think of any other way you could gain a unique class.¡± ¡°So it''s a mystery, so many mysteries.¡± ¡°Ha, must be confusing for you. Two days dead and already trying to figure out class skills and fighting a battle.¡± ¡°Is it rare for a new spirit to fight battles?¡± ¡°It used to be back in the day. Now new spirits are joining big conflicts by the thousands.¡± ¡°Why would they do that?¡± ¡°For some it''s about power. By defeating your enemies you gain more spirit energy, and spirit energy is everything in this world. Many fight tooth and nail to get more of it.¡± ¡°What about the others?¡± ¡°Others don''t like how the Originals are doing things.¡± ¡°What don''t they like about the Originals?¡± ¡°The Originals are the oldest and strongest, it''s not unusual for them to abuse their power.¡± ¡°I guess that makes sense. But what are they fighting over? You said join the fight not start a fight, which means that there''s already a fight going on.¡± ¡°It''s about how one side doesn''t like how oppressive the other side is.¡± ¡°What do you mean about oppressive?¡± ¡°They make strict laws and even tax spirits. They often kill spirits, for good, by taxing them to death.¡± ¡°That doesn''t sound good,¡± I say with a frown. ¡°I think I''ll go for a walk again.¡± ¡°Go for it, I know there is a lot to think about.¡± Alix¡¯s neighborhood is a lot nicer than the one I found myself waking up in. All the houses are rather large, the financial view of the neighborhood is not quite rich, but well off. Nearby is a city filled with tall buildings, colorful lights, and advertising boards. I wonder how I''m going to achieve my goal. It seems almost impossible to speak to the living, when I can''t even see them. Many things about the world are being kept secret. I''m not even sure why spirits are able to use energy in such a variety of ways. Spirit energy is strange in itself, it seems to be what everything is made of in one way or another. I guess the only way to start is to figure out the why. Why is spirit energy so important? Why am I full of spirit energy? Why do I need to increase my level to access more of it? And many more similar questions. The easy answer is to find an Original and ask them some questions, but somehow I don¡¯t think it''s going to be that simple. Another way is to play with the world myself but the system seems kind of restricting in this department. I''m limited by levels, classes, and skills. Chapter 5 ¡°So Alix?¡± I ask, sitting across from him on the couch. ¡°I had a thought, why haven''t I heard anything about people being traumatized upon entering the afterlife?¡± ¡°Huh?¡± Alix sitting on the couch book in hand pauses for a moment before registering the question. ¡°Oh, that''s because spirits aren''t allowed to keep their memory.¡± ¡°What, Why not?¡± I ask, getting frustrated. That''s one of the main reasons the system was made. To preserve memories. ¡°What the public is told is that memories are part of the body, only your soul can enter the afterlife. But the real reason is that the Originals can bribe people with the promise of gaining some lost memories.¡± ¡°That''s actually cruel.¡± ¡°Agreed, which is why I''m not going to lie about it.¡± ¡°I told you that you should lie about it anyways.¡± Emily adds placing her hands on her hips. ¡°It''s cruel and frankly unforgivable,¡± Alix insists. I began to nod and open my mouth to say something, but a sharp look from Emily makes me decide that I''m not helping. ¡°Traitor,¡± Alix murmurs at my sudden silence. ¡°My issue with you telling the truth about a massive secret is what if an Original hears about it. You know how they can be when it comes to keeping control over the population.¡± Emily scolds, tone making it clear there were to be no retorts. Alix wasn''t listening or didn''t care when he spoke. ¡°They also know that murdering everyone who talks back to them is going to sway everyone else against them. They have power, but not enough power to fight billions.¡± Emily¡¯s glare sharpens even more. Her eyes make it clear that she wishes intense pain upon her victim. ¡°And I¡¯ve told you, before. that people won''t care. about us going missing.¡± she says, spitting the words out. ¡°It''s not like we¡¡± Alix¡¯s retort is cut off by a large bang. The large bang sounded like a bomb going off. Seconds later a shock wave follows, blasting out all the windows and shaking the ground like an earthquake. Outside a short distance away a large dust cloud floats up into the sky. ¡°What the fuck is that?¡± I shout. ¡°Come on, let''s go find out.¡± Alix says, jumping off the couch, voice serious. Arriving at the blast zone, the night sky was lit up by several burning buildings. There is a small crater in the middle of the road, a humanoid stands at the center. The humanoid appears to be made of charcoal. It has red glowing eyes and produces a raging fire from all over its body. ¡°A demon!¡± Alix shouts, summoning his massive sword. ¡°What''s a demon?¡± I ask. ¡°Don''t have much time to explain.¡± Emily says, making a fireball in one hand. ¡°But, to keep it simple they show up randomly and try to destroy everything.¡± ¡°That doesn''t sound good.¡± I state the obvious. The demon isn''t content on being left out of the conversation. He jumps, attempting to land on top of Alix who took up the front. Alix leaps back. The demon¡¯s landing creates a shockwave of flame. Alix somehow cuts the wave of fire with his sword before charging in. The demon recovering from its earlier attack does not attempt to block. Alix¡¯s sword strikes it before bouncing off. ¡°Bastards tough,¡± he scowls before backing off. Alix backing off allows Emily to safely throw her fireball. Well, safely enough. The blast from Emily¡¯s fireball throws chunks of asphalt and charred dirt on Alix''s face. He looks back wearing a ¡®really¡¯ expression. It took a second for the dust to settle. In that second the demon threw a punch at Alix. Alix meets the punch with his sword. The powerful punch sends out another wave of fire. The wave of fire hits Emily and I, sending us both back a few feet. Standing up, I do a quick damage check. The fall didn''t hurt but my entire right side was burnt, making it hard to see or move on that side of my body. My body quickly heals. I turn my attention to Emily who appears better off. She barely looks charred. Maybe she has some natural fire resistance or something? ¡°You alright?¡± Alix asks, shoving the demon¡¯s fist away before backing up even more. ¡°Yup,¡± we both answer. ¡°Alright, this thing is strong,¡± Alix says. The demon lets out a bellowing roar as its attack is fended off again. Summoning my katana, I can''t help but think about how this is the final battle in an action movie or something. ¡°Max, how much spirit energy do you have?¡± Alix shouts, authority in his tone. ¡°About forty.¡± I reply, stopping beside him. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. ¡°Not that much then.¡± Alix looks slightly down in thought, casually dodging the demon''s fist. ¡°We need a large attack to damage this thing. Max, you''re on distraction, get its attention. Emily, launch attacks when it looks safe to.¡± ¡°What are you going to do?¡± I ask. ¡°Oh me, I''m going to deal the damage while it''s busy.¡± he says, a smile growing on his face. Maybe a bit of a battle enthusiast. It makes sense, a battle without the fear of pain, and an unlikely chance of death. I''m even starting to have fun. Shaking my head to clear the useless thoughts I run in. Immediately my face meets with a fist. Should have seen that coming. At least it didn''t put much fire behind that one. I stood from where the punch, or more accurately from where I fell after I ran into its fist. I turn about ten spirit energy into the lightning element. The slight increase in movement speed, and reaction time allows me to dodge more easily. The demon throws a punch. Darting to the side a wave of fire flies out from the fist in all directions. Fire flying at my face, I put up a shield made from the spirit energy in the air. You have gained the skill Energy Shield Create a stationery shield made out of spirit energy from the air Nice, that should help. I wonder if it makes me use it faster. The demon punches don''t stop for long. A second later another punch is being aimed at my face. This time, I decide to try out the Energy Shield. Placing the shield in front of the demon''s fist. The shield takes the hit, resisting for a second before shattering. The punch losing a lot of momentum gives me enough time to dodge. I duck, a wave of concentrated flame flows above my head, appearing more like a large laser. ¡°Out of the way!¡± Alix shouts, from above me. Alix now in the air is falling. His greatsword glowing a light blue, which I could only assume is filled with spirit energy. Registering his words, I jump back as far as I can. Less than a second later Alix¡¯s sword is buried in the demon¡¯s right forearm. The demon resists. Using its other arm to shove the sword back at Alix. Alix presses harder, the light blue glow of his sword turns dark blue. Alix pushes, shoving the sword deeper into the demon''s arm. The demon, realizing it''s being overpowered, steps to the side, allowing Alix to completely remove its lower arm. The demon steps back, letting out a feral growl. Now enraged the demon begins to move on Alix with renewed vigour. Alix steps aside as a large twisting fireball hits the demon directly. A massive explosion that dwarfs the demon''s own entrance ensues. Emily who is standing at the back sits down exhausted. ¡°Did we do it?¡± I ask, hoping it was over. Another angry roar thunders from the new crater. Guess not. ¡°Same strategy!¡± Alix commands. Charging back in I have to refresh the lightning element that increases my speed. Only twenty spirit energy left. Much more of this and it''s over. This is officially no longer fun. Stepping into the demon''s range, the demon looks dishearteningly good. The arm is still gone but the explosion appears to have done little to no damage. Looking closer I can see a slight crack on its waist. The only proof that it had been hit by Emily at all. Getting within reach of the demon, it attempts to grab me. Ducking under its arm I hit its waist with my sword. The sword bounces off as expected. The demon brings its fist down attempting to smash me. Jumping back, I watch again as Alix hammers the thing with his sword. This time however, the demon couldn''t block. Alix¡¯s sword meets the demon''s back. The demon''s tough body only allows the sword to barely break through the outer crust. ¡°There''s a crack on its waist!¡± I shout, hoping it may be of use. Alix looks up then down at the demon that was now standing up. Alix kicks the demon to the ground, dislodging his giant sword. Alix winds up to take another swing. Directing his attack at the slight crack in its waist. The demon flips onto its back and moves to put its arm up to block the impact. Shoving five more spirit energy into the lightning element, I dash back in. Putting my sword up, shoving all the lightning elements into my sword, I swing it down on the demon''s arm. The hit, not enough to sever the arm, smacks it back to the ground. Alix swings down hitting the demon directly in its waist, right on top of the crack Emily created. The impact cut the demon in half. ¡°About time it''s over.¡± I say sitting down. ¡°Agreed.¡± Alix says, shoving his sword into the air where it disappears. I watch as the demon¡¯s body disappears into a black fog. ¡°What is that?¡± I ask, gesturing to the black fog that is now growing. ¡°I don¡¯t know. Whatever energy comes from demons. In a few minutes it should turn to spirit energy.¡± Alix answers, glancing at the fog. ¡°Oh and don''t touch it.¡± Emily adds, sitting down next to Alix. ¡°Why not!¡± I ask, getting up to take a closer look. ¡°Because it will hurt.¡± Alix says. ¡°I thought spirits couldn''t feel pain?¡± I dont have the heart to tell them I''m going to touch it anyways. ¡°That stuff is different. As far as I know that''s the only thing that makes you feel pain.¡± Alix says, the look he gave me makes it clear that he suspects my intentions. I quickly prove Alix correct, as I put my hand into the fog. Immediately my vision blurs. My brain fogs. I can''t think. I can''t feel anything but pain. Nothing exists in my mind, not even the idea of thought, people, language, nothing but pain. Waking up, I''m laying on the ground, Alix and Emily sitting next to me. ¡°That was stupid.¡± Alix says. ¡°Agreed, and even after I warned you.¡± Emily adds. ¡°I had to feel it for myself.¡± I say, sitting up, ¡°besides, you severely underestimated how much that would hurt.¡± I stand up, the black energy turning blue. ¡°I wonder what that black smoke is.¡± It''s weird, the black fog looks the same as spirit energy. The only difference is color and density. The black fog looks more dense than when I punched Jack with my lightning fist. Maybe it''s about power? That demon was a lot stronger than Jack. My thoughts are confirmed as the black fog turns blue. ¡°Max, I say you get first pick at the energy.¡± Alix spoke, standing up alongside Emily. ¡°What do you mean?¡± I say, confused. ¡°What''s there to be confused about?¡± he asks, also looking confused. ¡°What do you mean by first picks?¡± ¡°You get to take the spirit energy first.¡± ¡°Do I take up a little bit or a lot?¡± ¡°Take as much as you need. In this case there is a lot to go around.¡± Reaching my hand out, I quickly reach my maximum amount of spirit energy. Max Level: 14 Spirit energy: 170/170 Class: Energy Manipulator Skills: Rapid regeneration, Energy shield
