 Chapter 0 - The Promise

    ¡°The legends have told of their coming. When I was a little girl, my mother explained that they were salvation, given form¡­ Who would have known, she was right all along. Do you¡­ remember what I said to you that night? The night we all died?¡±


    ¡°It was hard to forget when it was my only reason to keep going,¡± he whispered, refusing to look at her.


    She smiled as tears gently rolled down her cheeks. The couple stared into the night sky admiring the stars and comets falling.


    ¡°So much for keeping our promise, though. I¡¯m sure my mother wouldn¡¯t mind.¡±

    ¡°I think¡­ she was trying to save them. Trying to save us,¡± he explained.


    She giggled, ¡°You think so?¡±


    He turned to face her. After realizing they were both crying, he embraced her and held her close to his chest.


    ¡°I wanted to share this with you,¡± he cried, ¡°I wanted you to feel just as human as me.¡±


    She cried into his chest, ¡°Silly demon¡­ Are you sure you¡¯re human now?¡±


    He smiled at her and stared into her eyes, ¡°I know for certain I am,¡± he grabbed her hand and placed it over his pulsing heart, ¡°Can you feel that?¡±


    She smiled through her tears at the feeling of his beating heart. She then grabbed his hand and placed it over her cold, still chest.


    ¡°What? But we did it, we found each other just like we promised¡­¡±


    ¡°I know¡­ I¡¯m sorry I can¡¯t go with you, but I love you. I will always love you.¡± she rested her left hand on his.


    She looked into his glossy eyes and gently wiped the tears from his face.


    ¡°Now tell me my love, what does it mean to be human?¡±
