《System Echo - A Time Loop Story》 Chapter 1 - System Start ¡°Finally done,¡± Daniel sighed, leaning back in his chair. It had been a close thing, but he¡¯d managed to finish the code his boss had requested before the end of the day. Guess that means I¡¯ve got Friday off. His whole team had been working on overdrive just to finish the project in time. His boss¡¯s boss had promised everyone that if they managed to finish their part before the actual due date, they could have the rest of the week off. Daniel had hoped to have been done before now, but he knew exactly how to spend his three-day weekend. ¡°I¡¯m off,¡± Daniel yelled across the room as he pulled out his phone. ¡°Got it, see you on Monday,¡± his boss yelled back from behind her screen. Daniel dialed as he stepped outside, and the phone rang twice before there was a familiar click. ¡°Danny, my boy,¡± a male voice said over the speaker. ¡°What can I do you for this fine Thursday evening?¡± ¡°Hey Greg,¡± Daniel said. ¡°Is Olivia there?¡± Daniel had met Olivia two weeks ago during a double date with Greg and his girlfriend. Daniel and Greg had been pretty good friends since college and Greg¡¯s girlfriend had known Olivia since grade school. Daniel and Olivia had hit it off during the double date and went on a solo date soon after. Daniel had told Olivia that if he got done with work early, he wanted to spend the weekend with her exploring the nearby forest as he knew she loved nature. ¡°Yeah, she¡¯s been here all day,¡± Greg said. Daniel heard him cover the phone with his hand and call out, ¡°Olivia, lover boy is on the phone!¡± He returned to the call and added, ¡°She¡¯ll be right with you.¡± ¡°Give me that,¡± Daniel heard Olivia say. ¡°Hey Daniel, does this mean you¡¯re done early?¡± ¡°No, I was just checking to see how you are doing,¡± Daniel teased. ¡°Yes, I¡¯m done early.¡± They chatted for a bit as he walked out of the building and onto the sidewalk. A strange stillness in the air, as if the city were holding its breath, caught his attention for a moment but was quickly forgotten. ¡°So,¡± he finally asked, ¡°what time should I pick you up?¡± ¡°I¡¯m free whenever,¡± Olivia replied. ¡°How about now?¡± ¡°Well then, I¡¯ll see you in five.¡± ¡°Okay see you!¡± As Daniel hung up and strolled down the sidewalk, something caught his eye¡ªa boy, no older than ten, darted into the street, chasing a bright red ball. Time seemed to slow as Daniel spotted the semi-truck barreling toward the child, who was oblivious to the danger. Everything narrowed to just the boy and the truck. Instinct kicked in, and without thinking, Daniel lunged forward. Before he knew it, he had shoved the boy out of harm''s way, leaving himself in the truck''s path. As his life flashed before his eyes, he couldn¡¯t help but wonder about the date he and Olivia would never have, how Greg would react to the news that his friend had been obliterated, how¡ª Woosh! The truck barely missed him as his forward momentum kept him just out of harm¡¯s reach. With his heart pounding like a drum, Daniel drew in shaky breaths, trying to steady himself as he watched the truck that had almost ended his life disappear down the street. After calming himself and receiving a profuse thanks from the boy¡¯s mother, Daniel cautiously continued on his way, the near miss leaving him unsettled. He didn¡¯t catch the ominous clouds gathering in the sky. As he got closer to Olivia¡¯s apartment, Daniel heard the faint sound of sirens from behind him. When he turned to look he saw what appeared to be a full-on police chase¡ªa yellow PT Cruiser was racing down the street with a group of cop cars in hot pursuit. The sound of gunshots echoed, and Daniel felt an impact on his stomach. Looking down, he saw a red stain slowly spreading across his shirt. He reached down and felt the stain¡ªit was sticky and cold. He felt a chill seep into him. Daniel collapsed to the ground, struggling to think clearly. He looked down at his hands and saw that they were pale and shaking. He looked back up to see an open-mouthed teen holding an empty ice cream cone looking at him. Daniel¡¯s gaze shifted back to the red stain. Since when is blood cold? As the static in his head subsided and his thoughts began to clear, Daniel glanced behind the teen. There, he saw a bullet-riddled ice cream truck with no sign of the driver. He brought the finger he''d touched the stain with up to his mouth. Sweet and strawberry-flavored. Nervous laughter broke from his lips. Ice cream. It¡¯s only ice cream! I¡¯m fine... This is only the second time today I¡¯ve almost died, but hey, I¡¯m fine! After what felt like hours but was probably only a few minutes, the police and EMTs arrived. They quickly loaded the ice cream truck driver, who had been found unconscious with a bullet in his thigh, into an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital. Meanwhile, Daniel, whose ribs had been grazed by the bullet that hit the teen¡¯s ice cream cone, was having his wound dressed by an EMT at the scene. ¡°You¡¯re lucky this wasn¡¯t a couple inches over,¡± The EMT advised. ¡°Any closer to your heart and we wouldn¡¯t be having this conversation. I¡¯d get yourself checked into a hospital when you have the time. You should be all patched up now, but better safe than sorry.¡± ¡°Yeah, luck,¡± Daniel grimaced, ¡°I¡¯m sure.¡± After getting the all-clear and eager to move on, Daniel warily resumed his trek to Olivia¡¯s as rain began to fall. Great. When Daniel finally reached Olivia¡¯s place, he saw her watching him through the window, her face a mix of frustration and concern. She threw open the door as he trudged across her yard, each step heavy with exhaustion. If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. ¡°Daniel!¡± Olivia exclaimed, her frown deepening. ¡°It¡¯s pouring out there! Why don¡¯t you come inside?¡± Daniel winced at her tone, knowing he¡¯d promised to be there in five minutes but had taken an hour instead due to his string of accidents. He managed a tired smile. ¡°I¡¯d love that. You wouldn¡¯t believe the day I¡¯ve ha¡ª¡± Before he could finish, a blinding light overtook him, and a rumbling roar echoed above. He felt himself falling backward, the acrid smell of burnt flesh filling his nose. ¡°Daniel!!,¡± He heard Olivia¡¯s voice shriek faintly as his vision began to fade. He floated in a black void, feeling nothing and thinking nothing. Was it seconds or eternities that had passed? He did not know. Abruptly, all he could see was a light in front of him. Had it always been there? He did not know. He reached out slowly, the light just inches away from him. Despite the effort, it felt like trying to grasp something in a dream¡ª tantalizingly close yet always just out of reach. Finally, he was moments away from making contact, but a sense of uncertainty lingered. What would happen when he touched the light? He did not know. Daniel¡¯s eyes opened. A familiar face was looking down at him with a frown. ¡°We really should meet in better circumstances,¡± the EMT who had treated him earlier joked lightly. ¡°Daniel oh my god I thought you died,¡± Olivia cried, her makeup smeared by the rain and her tears. ¡°Danny, I thought we lost you,¡± Greg said, standing next to her in shock. The rain continued its relentless assault, the sky brooding and dark. The wind howled with a fury that seemed almost sentient, its shrieks piercing through Daniel¡¯s thoughts. The relentless gale felt like an insistent voice, warning him of darker, more terrifying things yet to come. As Daniel began to stand, the rattling of metal caught his attention. A loose stop sign, shaking violently in the wind, suddenly came free and flew straight at him. Before he could react, a sharp pain struck his neck, and then he was on the ground. Through his dazed vision, he saw Olivia, Greg, and the EMT standing in shocked disbelief around a headless man who had collapsed in a heap. What the fu¡ª Darkness overtook him.
¡ªck! An earthy smell assaulted Daniel¡¯s nose. A gentle breeze blew against his face. Opening his eyes, the familiar street or the sterile lights of a hospital were nowhere to be found. Instead, he was lying in a lush forest with sunlight filtering through the canopy above. Groaning, he pushed himself up, only to be jolted back as a grey holographic screen engulfed his vision. Greetings Daniel, you have died. Generating system¡ Daniel stared at the screen in a daze, his thoughts struggling to catch up. Just as he began to try to make sense of the situation, a light ding echoed, and the text on the screen shifted. System Generated: Harem System. Congratulations. Due to your actions with the System: null, you have been awarded the following starting stats: Dexterity +1, Intelligence +3, Willpower +2, Perception +1. His eyes widened in confusion as the screen faded away. Looking around, he saw moss-covered trees all around him, their thick trunks reaching high into the leafy canopy above. Daniel seemed to be in an opening in the forest, where the dense foliage parted just enough to offer a glimpse of the sky. As he glanced down, Daniel found he was clad in a simple tunic and trousers¡ªboth unfamiliar yet surprisingly well-fitted, as if tailored just for him. He wore sturdy boots that felt strangely comfortable against the soft grass beneath him. A leather satchel hung comfortably across his shoulder, and as he looked down at it, a wave of curiosity and unease washed over him. Taking a few tentative steps around the clearing, he quickly realized that the boundaries just led back into the depths of the forest¡ªdense, shadowy, and uninviting. The last thing he remembered was getting up off the street and¡ª Almost instinctively, his hand went to his neck. Was that a stop sign? ¡°What is going on?¡± Daniel exclaimed. ¡°What did that screen mean by System?¡± Ding! A new screen popped up in front of him: Status Name: Daniel System: Harem Stats Strength: 1 Constitution: 1 Dexterity: 2 Intelligence: 4 Perception: 2 Willpower: 3 System Abilities: Seductive Charm: Attempt to use your charisma to ensnare sapient entities into your harem. Power of Desire: Unlock unique abilities from your harem members, allowing you to wield their strengths as if they were your own. The more diverse your collection, the greater your power. Intimate Bonding: Forge deeper connections through whispered secrets and shared moments. Stronger bonds grant access to hidden potential and elevate your power-sharing capabilities. Daniel blinked at the screen incredulously. He¡¯d devoured countless LitRPGs in his free time, daydreaming about living in a world filled with stats and powers¡ªbut a Harem System? It felt absurd. What is happening? His heart raced as he thought of the implications, a gnawing feeling settling in his stomach. The reality of the situation began to set in. The lush forest seemed to be closing in around him, and he couldn''t shake the dread creeping into his mind: What if he never made it back to Earth? Daniel tried to breathe deeply, focusing on the soothing sounds of nature, but each attempt felt increasingly futile. The dense shadows of the trees loomed overhead, pressing in on him. A knot formed in his throat, tightening with every moment. Freaking out isn¡¯t going to help, he desperately tried to remind himself. The words from the system echoed in his mind, a cruel reminder of his situation. He¡¯d always prided himself on being rational, but faced with the reality of his current existence, reason felt like a distant memory. As if to make matters worse, Daniel noticed the forest had fallen silent. The cheerful chorus of birdsong and the buzzing of insects had been replaced by an eerie stillness that enveloped him. Had he been too loud? Heart pounding, he slowly spun around, scanning the surroundings, but he couldn¡¯t see anything. It felt as if he had drawn something¡¯s attention. A low growl filled the clearing, seeming to echo from all directions and sending a chill down Daniel''s spine. A wolf materialized from the shadows, its eyes locked on him with an intense, predatory gaze. Another wolf padded out beside the first, each step deliberate and silent, their bodies tense and poised. Daniel''s heart raced as panic surged through him. Were there more lurking just out of sight? Was he surrounded? Is this how I die? With adrenaline pumping through his veins, Daniel chose a direction and ran. It felt like the wolves were right on his tail, ready to rip his throat out. As he sprinted deeper into the forest, he could hear their growls escalate into sharp barks, each sound reverberating in his chest. He ran and ran. It felt like hours¡ªeach second stretching in his terrified mind¡ªbut with how little he exercised, it couldn¡¯t have been more than a minute. Suddenly, he burst into a clearing, a hollowed-out section of the forest where the underbrush had been pushed aside, revealing a dark hole tucked beneath a cluster of gnarled roots. The entrance was framed by soft, damp earth and a few scattered stones, while the faint scent of musk filled the air. The hole was a low cave-like space, sheltered from the elements, with the remnants of animals¡ªbones and fur¡ªscattered just outside. Daniel''s mind raced as he realized this was the wolves¡¯ den, and he had unwittingly run straight to it. He skidded to a stop, heart pounding, unsure of what to do next. Curious cubs peeked out from the entrance, their eyes wide and innocent, drawn to the unfamiliar scent wafting through the air. The adults watched from a distance, low growls rumbling in their throats as they warned him to stay away from their young. Daniel backed away slowly, arms raised. He just had to show he wasn¡¯t a threat. Heart pounding, he kept his eyes locked on the den, cautiously creeping backward and trying to avoid any abrupt movements. Unfortunately, his foot snagged on a root hidden beneath the damp earth. He stumbled forward, arms flailing, and for a brief moment, it looked like he was lunging toward one of the curious cubs that had ventured out. The growling escalated, and before he could regain his balance, the wolves surged forward. Their instincts kicked in, perceiving him as a threat to their cubs. Daniel¡¯s eyes widened in horror as he realized he had made a fatal mistake. He turned to flee, but it was too late. The wolves were upon him, swift and relentless. A flash of fur, a sharp snap of jaws, and the world went dark as the weight of their powerful bodies overwhelmed him, leaving nothing but silence in the forest. Greetings Daniel, you have died. Generating system¡ Chapter 2 - First Loop Greetings Daniel, you have died. Generating system¡ An earthy smell assaulted Daniel¡¯s nose. A gentle breeze blew against his face. Opening his eyes, Daniel saw a grey holographic screen. Behind it was the canopy of a lush forest. He was lying on his back, but he didn¡¯t move to get up. A light ding echoed, and Daniel was almost unsurprised when the text on the screen changed. System Generated: Quest System. As the screen faded away, Daniel remained lying on his back, processing the events that had just transpired. The pain of getting torn apart was too real, too visceral, to be a dream. Daniel replayed his death in his mind with a detached curiosity. He knew he should be overwhelmed, but something was missing. The memories of dying were there, but the emotions that should have accompanied them were absent. A loud bird call sounded in the distance, snapping Daniel out of his thoughts. He pushed himself up from the ground and started to pace around the clearing. What was going on? Now that he could think more clearly, his walk to Olivia¡¯s seemed more suspect. It was almost as if he was being targeted by some malicious force. Did they just want him dead, or had they sent him here? If so, where were they? Though his mind was racing, he thought that train of thought wasn¡¯t going to lead to anything useful, so Daniel shifted his focus to another pressing concern. If this was real, why was he back in the clearing? He should have been dead after the attack by the wolves. He thought about it a bit. Was he in some sort of time loop? The fact that he was in the same clearing as before lent credence to that idea, but he couldn¡¯t be sure. And he certainly didn¡¯t want to try and test that theory. There was something else he thought he could check out, though. That screen from before¡ªit said something about generating a system, but this time it was different. What was it he had said to trigger the screen the first time? ¡°Screen? Show? System?¡± Ding! Find someplace to live, something to eat, somewhere to drink, or any combination of the 3. Though he had been expecting something to appear, Daniel sill reeled back at the bombardment of screens filling his vision. The last time he did this, he only got one screen. Gathering himself, and feeling curious, Daniel began reading through each line of text, immediately noticing one major difference: the system was labeled Quest rather than Harem, and the abilities were changed accordingly. Though he wasn¡¯t complaining about not having to deal with a Harem System, Daniel couldn¡¯t help but wonder as to why it was different this time. Daniel paused. Something about his previous thoughts felt distinctly odd. He decided to test something. I¡¯m glad I have a Quest System instead of a Harem System. There! He wasn¡¯t imagining it. It was as if certain parts of what he was thinking were more present, more emphasized than others. What was causing this? Why was it only happening when he thought about the Syste¡ª A low growl filled the clearing, sending a familiar chill down Daniel''s spine. Two wolves emerged from the forest, their eyes locked on him. Ding! Quest Gained: Escape the Wolves! Oh no, the wolves that tore you apart are back! Looks like you took too long thinking when you should have been running. Escape the wolves by any means necessary. Damn it! The screen was right. The last time he was here, he¡¯d spent too long panicking and the wolves had showed up and chased him to their den. He should have left the moment he could, but he had gotten distracted and hadn¡¯t thought about it.Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings. Looks like I may get to test out my time loop theory after all. Luckily, Daniel wasn¡¯t having a panic attack this time and could react a little more succinctly to the situation. He thought back to the den¡ªthe last time, the wolves hadn¡¯t attacked immediately. Only after he tripped had they come after him. Armed with that knowledge, Daniel backed away slowly, his eyes on the lookout for any roots. As he walked back, the wolves exchanged a glance, their growls deepening. They were tense, muscles coiled like springs, ready to react. The forest around him seemed unnaturally quiet now, the usual hum of insects and birds silenced¡ªas if the woods themselves were still, waiting to see what would happen. The soft rustling of the trees felt unnervingly loud. The first wolf took a cautious step forward, a low rumble resonating in its throat. Daniel felt a surge of adrenaline, his heart pounding in his chest as he moved back another step. He could almost hear the blood rushing through his ears, his entire body poised and ready to bolt at the first sign of attack. A sudden crack of a twig under his heel made Daniel flinch, the noise impossibly loud in the still air. He saw the first wolf¡¯s ears twitch, its lips curling back to reveal sharp teeth. Time seemed to slow as Daniel swallowed hard, his throat dry. They¡¯re watching, waiting for a mistake. He kept backing away, never taking his eyes off them until his foot brushed against a patch of fallen leaves near the far edge of the clearing. The wolves tensed, muscles rippling under their sleek coats. For a moment, Daniel could almost see the scenario play out¡ªthe wolves lunging, him running, the sharp pain of fangs sinking into flesh. His breath came faster, chest tight as he struggled to keep his movements controlled. Suddenly, the second wolf flicked its ears back, the growl shifting into a warning bark. It was a clear signal¡ªthis was their territory. With a final piercing glare, the wolves turned as one and flowed back into the shadows of the trees, tails flicking in a clear sign of dismissal. Daniel breathed a sigh of relief as a screen appeared in front of him with a Ding. Quest Complete: Escape the Wolves! You managed to escape the wolves! For using previous knowledge and staying aware of your surroundings, you receive +2 Intelligence and +1 Perception. As his nerves settled, Daniel studied the new screen with interest. He didn¡¯t know what these stats would do, but he could guess¡ªand having more definitely of them wouldn¡¯t hurt. He glanced around the clearing, trying to feel a difference. Maybe the forest was a little brighter, but he couldn¡¯t tell. Was he thinking any faster? He paused, trying to focus on his thoughts. Nothing seemed to be speeding up, but perhaps it wasn¡¯t as simple as that. With a shrug, he decided it didn¡¯t matter for now¡ªhe could try and figure it out as he went. Daniel moved away from the clearing, leaving the place where he''d come back to life¡ªagain¡ªbehind him. The quest screens still floated in his mind. He figured completing one of the quests would be a good start to surviving this time. Shelter, food, or water¡ªany of them would do. The deeper he walked into the woods, the more the trees seemed to close in around him. Each one stretched high, branches tangled above like a massive, green web, filtering the sunlight into patches on the ground. Underfoot, a mix of leaves, dirt, and occasional patches of moss crunched softly as he wandered. It was peaceful, but that sense of calm only made him feel more on edge. Every gust of wind seemed to carry the whisper of unseen threats lurking nearby. He wandered for what felt like hours, scanning the forest floor and trees for any signs of water or a place to rest. Here and there, birds flitted through the branches, their calls sharp against the stillness. But there were no streams, no signs of animal tracks leading to food sources, and no caves or hollows large enough to serve as shelter. It was just endless forest. Suddenly, something shifted in his peripheral vision. A flicker of movement, so subtle he almost missed it. Daniel froze, his eyes darting to the spot where he''d seen it¡ªnothing. Just the brown bark of a tree blending into the leaves around it. He let out a breath. I must be imagining things. Daniel continued on his way when¡ª Rustle. Without warning, a coiled shape lunged out from the brush, heading straight for his leg. Time seemed to slow as Daniel¡¯s mind processed the threat. He leaped back just in time. A snake, its body patterned to blend perfectly with the forest floor, snapped at the space where he''d just been standing. Its scales glinted briefly in the sunlight as it struck again. Once more, Daniel dodged. His mind moved quickly, processing the danger with sharp precision. His heart raced, but his head remained clear, the heightened awareness giving him a strange confidence. Was this... the stats? His newfound Intelligence? He couldn''t be sure, but something had definitely changed. The snake, realizing it had missed its chance, slithered back into the underbrush, disappearing as quickly as it had appeared. Daniel exhaled slowly, his muscles relaxing. As he caught his breath, Daniel glanced around the area where the snake had ambushed him. A jagged opening caught his eye¡ªjust a few feet away, half-hidden by overgrown foliage, was a small rocky overhang. It wasn¡¯t much, but it was the closest thing to shelter he¡¯d seen all day. The overhang jutted out from a large boulder, creating a shallow cave that might just keep him dry if it rained. He pushed aside the leaves and examined the space more closely. It wasn¡¯t deep enough to hide from a serious predator, but it would at least offer cover for the night. And that was all he needed for now. As the last traces of daylight began to fade, Daniel made the decision. He would stay here. It wasn¡¯t perfect, but it was better than wandering the woods in the dark. Ding! The now familiar sound filled the air, and Daniel glanced up at the new screen that appeared in front of him. Quest Complete: Rule of 3 - Shelter! You¡¯ve successfully found shelter! For taking the time to assess your surroundings and locate a safe space for the night, you receive food and water. A moment later, a small pouch appeared in his hand. It felt light, but when he opened it, he found a neatly wrapped bundle of dried food and a canteen of water. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth¡ªthis would help him. Tossing the pouch into his satchel, Daniel noticed something odd. It slipped in without much resistance, but the satchel hadn¡¯t even looked large enough to fit it. Frowning, he reached inside, feeling the familiar leather interior stretch further than it should. His hand moved through the satchel¡¯s depths, and his eyes widened in realization. The inside was bigger. A sense of wonder washed over him. This was something magical¡ªproof that he had stepped into a world unlike any he¡¯d known. While everything else felt abstract, this was the first tangible interaction he¡¯d had with something like this since waking up here. Curious, he inspected the other items he had on him, searching for any hidden properties. The boots felt incredibly comfortable, but beyond that, he couldn''t discern much else. Eventually, feeling the weight of exhaustion pressing down on him, he lay back against the soft forest floor, staring up at the canopy of leaves. Now that he had time to think, Daniel turned toward something he¡¯d been consciously avoiding. He could no longer ignore everything he had endured. Ding! Quest Gained: Process Your Grief You¡¯ve left your old life behind and faced death multiple times. Find a way to come to terms with what has happened to you now that you¡¯re in a safe space. He ignored the screen that popped up in front of him and simply let everything he had been keeping bottled up flow through him. As he lay there, grappling with his emotions, tears slipped down his cheeks. Daniel allowed himself to feel the full weight of his sorrow, embracing the pain rather than shying away from it. Daniel cried as memories flooded his mind¡ªthe laughter shared with his friends, the warmth of his mom¡¯s hug, the simple joy of quiet moments shared with another. Each recollection struck him like a wave, threatening to pull him under. But he held on, acknowledging the hurt and letting it wash over him. He realized that to heal, he needed to honor these memories, to carry them with him rather than bury them in the depths of his mind. With each breath, he felt a little lighter, the act of confronting his grief helping him let go of the weight he hadn¡¯t realized he was carrying. The tears, though painful, were also cathartic, creating space for better thoughts to emerge. As his sorrow began to dissipate, he found a flicker of determination igniting within him. He didn¡¯t know if he¡¯d ever make it back home, but he knew he had to keep moving forward one step at a time, embracing whatever lay ahead. Ding! Quest Complete: Process Your Grief You have taken the first step in processing what you¡¯ve been through. For your perseverance, you receive a Good Night¡¯s Sleep. Daniel closed his eyes, feeling a sense of peace envelop him as he surrendered to the darkness. Chapter 3 - The Forest Daniel woke up to another screen filling his vision. That¡¯s going to get old, isn¡¯t it? Good morning, Daniel. Due to your actions during the previous day, you have been awarded the following stats: Constitution +1, Intelligence +1, Willpower +1, Perception +1. Daniel stood from where he was lying, not feeling any of the aches and pains one should get from sleeping on a random patch of forest floor. That Good Night¡¯s Sleep must¡¯ve been putting in a lot of work. He surveyed his environment, scanning the forest, before turning back to the screen. Actions during the previous day, huh? Does it mean with the wolves? That seemed plausible, given that he¡¯d received rewards for it, but he still felt uncertain. Where had the willpower come from? Maybe it was for resisting the urge to run screaming through the trees. As for the constitution¡ªhe had no idea. He put that aside for now¡ªif this morning was any indication, tomorrow morning should have some answers for him. For now, he needed to focus on the present and figure out his next steps. Thinking for a bit, Daniel opened his System Screen and looked at his Abilities. He took a second to look through his Quest Log, noting the crossed-out completed quests and the still active What¡¯s going on? quest. After, he focused his attention on the true reason he had opened the screen in the first place: Quest Insight. The ability said that it would give him quests based on his current situation or actions. Find yourself with no food or water, and no place to sleep¡ªfind one of those things. Wolves show up wanting to tear you apart¡ªescape the wolves. Cause and effect, through no action of his own. Except for one thing. He hadn¡¯t received the quest that helped him sleep until after he had decided to deal with his emotions. If it was just the feelings, it should¡¯ve happened while he was walking through the forest. He may have been ignoring them, but they were there. Could he cause a quest to appear just by thinking about it? Maybe if he focused enough, one would appear. Daniel figured he¡¯d give it a go! ¡ ¡ ¡he was drawing a blank. Daniel frowned¡ªhe could not, for the life of him, come up with anything. The harder he focused, the more his ideas slipped away. Frustrated, he muttered under his breath, ¡°Come on, there has to be something.¡± Ding! Quest Gained: Quest Creation You¡¯re exploring your abilities and attempting to figure out how they work. Unfortunately, it seems you can¡¯t think of a single thing to do in this mysterious forest! Find something to do. Daniel stared at the screen, embarrassment flushing his cheeks. Great, now his own System was mocking him. Still, it helped him focus enough to come up with an idea. I guess I could explore the forest and find out what¡¯s out there¡ª Ding! Ding! Quest Gained: Exploration Now that you¡¯ve had yourself a little nap, it¡¯s time to explore the forest! Find anything interesting. Quest Complete: Quest Creation You¡¯ve purposefully created a new quest! ! For managing to think of a worthwhile goal, you receive +1 intelligence. Daniel raised an eyebrow. ¡°Did I just get smarter by... thinking of something obvious?¡± He chuckled, shaking his head. ¡°I guess I¡¯ll take it.¡± With the new Exploration quest nudging him onward, Daniel started his journey deeper into the forest, brushing past low-hanging branches and stepping carefully over tangled roots. The morning mist clung to the undergrowth, giving the forest an otherworldly, muted feel. After a few minutes of walking, Daniel spotted a patch of oddly colored mushrooms sprouting along the base of a tree. Curious, he crouched down to examine them. Ding! Quest Complete: Exploration You¡¯ve found something interesting! For finding something interesting, you receive an Edible Mushroom. A mushroom appeared in Daniel¡¯s hand as he tilted his head, unimpressed. ¡°This counts as interesting? I¡¯ve seen weirder in my fridge.¡± Almost as soon as he stood up, another screen popped into view. Ding! Quest Gained: Exploration Keep exploring the forest. There¡¯s bound to be something even more interesting! Daniel glanced from the screen to the mushroom in his hand, eyebrows raised. ¡°Is this just going to keep repeating?¡± he said. ¡°I¡¯ll run out of space if it keeps handing me random stuff.¡± With a shrug, he decided to eat the mushroom. After all, the System hadn¡¯t hurt him so far¡ªand he was pretty sure it wouldn¡¯t give him poisonous food, right? He took a tentative bite, half-expecting a bitter taste, but to his surprise, it was actually quite good. Slightly sweet, with a nutty flavor that left him wanting more. He quickly finished it, savoring the unexpected treat. As he chewed, Daniel waited for something to happen. Maybe some kind of boost, a burst of energy, or some hidden magic¡ªafter all, this was a magical system. He braced himself, eyes scanning for any notifications or effects. A minute passed. Then two. Nothing. He blinked, sitting down on a nearby log. ¡°Really? No buff? No boost? Just... a tasty mushroom?¡± The silence of the forest around him felt almost mocking. Well that¡¯s disappointing. He looked at the mushroom patch that had originally completed the quest. They looked different than the one he had just eaten¡ªsmaller, with a darker cap and a faint, almost iridescent shimmer to them. Not being a mushroom expert, Daniel had no idea if they were safe. He stared at them for a moment, as if expecting them to do something magical. But the patch just sat there, unmoving. A slight hesitation passed over him.You might be reading a pirated copy. He didn¡¯t need any surprise side effects¡ªespecially not with what was already going on. With a sigh, Daniel pressed onward. The sooner he figured out what was going on with this place, the sooner he could get a grip on it. Maybe the forest had something else to offer. A few minutes later, he stumbled across a tiny stream winding through the trees. Ding! Quest Complete: Exploration You¡¯ve found something interesting! For finding something interesting, your canteen has been refilled. Daniel squinted at the screen. ¡°So... every random thing I come across counts as ¡®interesting¡¯?¡± The System chimed back with yet another Exploration quest, almost as if it was eagerly prompting him to continue. Following the stream, Daniel paused as his eyes caught a glimmer of something partially buried in the dirt. Curiosity piqued, he knelt down, brushing away the leaves and twigs that had settled around it. A stick. But not just any stick. It was long and straight¡ªthe color a deep, rich brown with streaks of gold running along its length. He took the stick in his hands, giving it a spin. It felt... well, it felt kind of cool. But Daniel was not some kid getting excited about a random piece of wood¡ªhe was an adult. He stood up, tossing the stick from one hand to the other as he examined it more closely. The texture was almost perfect. Not too rough, not too smooth. It was almost like the universe had just handed him the perfect walking stick. He started walking again, the stick lightly tapping against the ground with each step. As he walked, Daniel glanced at the stick again. You know, it is a nice stick... Ding! Quest Complete: Exploration You¡¯ve found something interesting! For finding something interesting, you receive +1 Strength, and your Cool Stick is upgraded into an Even Cooler Stick. Suddenly, the stick shimmered in his hands. The grain of the wood shifted, its color deepening, and it seemed to become just... better. More refined. Stronger. Daniel blinked, staring at the now transformed stick. At the same time, a subtle warmth spread through his body. Going from one strength to two wasn¡¯t a massive leap, but it was more noticeable than any of his previous stat increases, likely because it was a physical stat. Maybe each boost in his stats added a small base increase, or perhaps it was exponential. He couldn¡¯t tell for sure ¡ªhe hadn¡¯t been keeping track. Either way, the stick now felt lighter, as though the extra strength had somehow balanced its weight. The texture of the stick had changed to something impossibly smooth, and the gold streaks had turned into intricate patterns, almost like runes embedded in the wood. It was longer now, a little heavier, but the balance was perfect. This wasn¡¯t just a stick anymore¡ªit was the stick. Daniel''s mouth went dry as he twirled the stick in his hand, fully aware of just how absurd this situation was. ¡°I am an adult,¡± he stated to himself. But then he gave a small grin and looked at the stick again. ¡°I am an adult... with the coolest stick.¡± He couldn¡¯t help but feel a little giddy. Of all the strange things happening around him, this might just be the most ridiculous, but also... the most satisfying. As Daniel continued walking through the forest, now wielding his Even Cooler Stick, his mind drifted to a nagging thought that had popped up after the stick¡¯s transformation. He¡¯d been so focused on the immediate reward that it hadn¡¯t occurred to him until now: Why hadn¡¯t the quest completed until after he stopped trying to downplay the stick in his head? It wasn¡¯t as though he¡¯d suddenly became super excited about it. Sure, he¡¯d accepted it was cool, but the stick¡¯s sudden transformation had caught him off guard. So, why had the System chosen that moment to reward him with the ¡°cooler¡± version of the stick? He paused, leaning on the transformed walking stick, and stared at the forest floor, mulling over the question. Maybe the System was more in tune with his subconscious than he realized. That would explain how his thoughts seemed to dictate the quests and their completion. It also made him cringe to think that finding a stream ¡°interesting¡± had triggered a quest reward. What that said about him, he did not know. But then his mind drifted to past quests. Take the wolves, for example. The memory replayed in his mind: the clearing, the growls, the tension in the air, and the way the wolves had finally turned and retreated into the trees. It had all felt so clear at the time¡ªhe¡¯d been in danger, he¡¯d backed away, and then they¡¯d just... left. But now that he thought about it more, a seed of doubt started to sprout in his mind. How had he known they¡¯d left? He hadn¡¯t heard them moving, hadn¡¯t seen them slip away behind the trees. All he remembered was the final, lingering glare they had given him before they disappeared. What if they hadn¡¯t really left at all? What if they¡¯d just¡ gone out of sight? He¡¯d been so focused on the quest completing, the ding of the notification that had rung in his ears, but how did he know? The doubt gnawed at him, making his grip tighten around the stick. It wasn¡¯t that he was worried about the wolves returning¡ªnot right now anyway¡ªbut the idea that they could have stayed just out of sight, watching him, made him uneasy. A sudden idea jolted him out of his worries. If the System was responding to his thoughts, could he use that to his advantage? What if he could manipulate it to give him rewards on command? He''d already triggered a reward by just thinking the stick was cool, but could he do it again? Daniel glanced back down at the stick in his hand, now a perfect blend of gold and wood. It really is kind of cool... He cringed at the thought. "Oh God, I¡¯m getting attached to a stick." He looked up at the sky, squinting through the canopy of trees. The sunlight that filtered through the leaves gave the whole forest an ethereal glow. ¡°Ah, the sky¡¡± he sighed, looking up in wonder. He waited. A frown tugged at his lips. So much for that. Apparently, you couldn''t just point at something and expect the System to reward it. He hadn¡¯t felt anything about the sky¡ªhe¡¯d just said it. With a sigh, Daniel resumed walking, his footsteps muffled by the forest floor. The stick tapped rhythmically against the ground with each step, its weight solid in his hand. He looked around, genuinely curious now. What else would the System¡ªor him, rather¡ªconsider ¡°interesting¡±? As it turned out, the answer was... quite a lot. As he wandered around, Daniel soon stumbled upon a patch of wildflowers blooming in a breathtaking display of color. Shades of purple, yellow, and blue were scattered across the forest floor, their delicate petals swaying gently in the breeze. He bent down, a faint smile tugging at his lips as he took in the vibrant scene. Ding! Reward: A Medicinal Flower. Later, as he paused to rest against a sturdy oak, he tilted his head back, letting his gaze drift upward¡ªand caught sight of an owl, quietly perched among the branches, watching him with wide, golden eyes. It sat still, regal and unbothered, resting in the tree. Ding! Reward: +1 Intelligence and +1 Perception. Further on, he spotted a gnarled tree that, in the right light, seemed to have a face¡ªknobby bark forming something like eyes and a mouth, frozen mid-laugh or mid-scream. It was hidden within a ring of other trees, and he had only noticed it because of the almost perfect symmetry of the surrounding circle. Ding! Reward: +2 Perception. His pouch, though larger on the inside, was now stuffed with an assortment of treasures by the time he was almost done with his trek through the forest. The sun, no longer as bright, cast a softened light through the canopy, shadows beginning to stretch out around him. There was still daylight, but dusk would soon settle in, and the forest held an unsettling quiet as the afternoon wore on. Daniel continued walking, tapping his stick along the ground, when he noticed something odd¡ªa faint shimmer in the distance¡ªa fleeting flicker just beyond the trees. He blinked, shrugging it off as a trick of the light, maybe a glint of setting sun through the leaves. Nothing there. But something in the back of his head nagged at him, whispering otherwise. He squinted back at the spot, and just barely, a shimmer hovered again, almost like¡ no, surely it was his imagination. He took a step forward, trying to get a clearer look, and for a moment the shimmer flickered again¡ªthere, and then, as if brushing it aside, gone. ¡°Must just be my mind playing tricks on me,¡± he muttered, feeling an urge to keep moving, to look away. He half-turned back to the path but hesitated. A thought crept up: What if it''s not? He frowned, focusing harder, feeling a subtle push against his thoughts¡ªsomething nudging him to dismiss it. But there it was, persistent, just at the edge of his vision: a hazy, dark shape hidden behind the trees. Something pressed against him again, trying to turn him away, but this time he held firm, slowly pushing back against the pressure in his mind. A chill skated down his spine. That shimmer wasn¡¯t just his imagination. And then, like breaking through the surface of water, he felt the mental effect fade. The shimmer sharpened into a structure in the distance¡ªa dark, towering shape just barely illuminated against the shadowed trees. Ding! Quest Complete: Exploration You¡¯ve found something interesting! For persisting against a magical effect meant to turn you away, you receive +3 Willpower and +2 Perception. Daniel¡¯s eyes widened as the image solidified. Before him stood a massive, crumbling fortress, its walls thick and ancient where they hadn¡¯t succumbed to decay. Shadows pooled beneath its twisted battlements, and the air seemed to grow colder, heavier. As he stared at the fortress, an inexplicable dread took root. It was as though something within its walls was stirring, aware of his presence. Chapter 4 - The Fortress I Daniel could only gape at the fortress looming before him. Finding any sign of civilization out here was a shock¡ªbut a castle? And on top of that, he was still reeling from the realization that something had been attempting to mess with his mind. He gave a surprised yelp as a new screen popped up with a Ding! Quest Gained: Explore the Fortress Having recently broken through a mental effect, you find yourself faced with an ancient fortress. Explore the fortress and see what it has to offer. Daniel stared at the screen for a moment before turning back to the fortress. There was something about it that wasn¡¯t quite right, beyond the obvious. His eyes scanned the structure again, his eyes wandering over its overgrown walls, vines and moss covering patches of the stone. Some towers were collapsed, while others still had their roofs intact. Bits and pieces of other buildings peeked through the walls, their edges softened by time¡ª Wait. Daniel¡¯s gaze snapped back to the towers. Some were crumbling, but the wooden roofs of others were still standing? From what Daniel understood, wood would rot long before the stone became this damaged. Looking even closer, he picked out more oddities. The sections of wall that weren¡¯t destroyed were pristine, untouched by nature. There was no gradual fade of greenery, just a sharp line where the moss stopped, as if the stone itself had repelled it. He blinked, his mind struggling to make sense of it. And it wasn¡¯t just the roofs. Other wooden features¡ªdoors, beams¡ªweren¡¯t rotted away. They looked¡ fine. Like they¡¯d been freshly placed. And yet, part of a broken wooden beam lay half-eaten by time while the other half remained perfectly intact. Daniel scratched his head, his mind racing. He glanced back at the screen, still hovering in the corner of his vision. It wanted him to explore the fortress, but he wasn¡¯t sure if that was a good idea. He glanced at the darkening sky¡ªnight was creeping in faster than he¡¯d realized. With a sigh, he turned to head back, deciding that sleep was his best option. The thought of staying out in the open any longer didn¡¯t sit well with him. As he turned away, though, something caught his eye. There, standing just at the edge of the clearing, was a shadow. It wasn¡¯t human. It was tall, its body hunched in a way that suggested something both predatory and intelligent. Its eyes¡ªglowing faintly¡ªscanned the area with sharp movements, as if it were searching for something specific. Daniel froze. The creature¡¯s gaze flicked straight toward him, and for a moment, he swore it could see him. His pulse quickened. He took a step back, but the creature didn¡¯t follow. Instead, it hesitated, and turned as if to leave, only to stop suddenly, looking in his direction. It tried taking a step forward¡ªonly to falter, its glowing eyes twitching before it swiveled in another direction. Each time it drew closer, it turned away as if it lost interest, but it would quickly turn back, fighting itself, struggling against something it couldn¡¯t see. Daniel¡¯s breath hitched. It was like the thing could sense him, but each time it started to move, something made it turn away. What could be¡ªwait. The mental effect! The same one Daniel had just fought off¡ªit was interfering with the creature, forcing it to overlook the area and, thankfully, him. Daniel¡¯s heart hammered in his chest as the creature¡¯s gaze locked onto him once more. He took another cautious step back, realizing the risk. If he tried to leave¡ªif he stepped out of the curtain of influence¡ªthe creature would be free to chase him. The creature hissed, its frustration mounting as it paced again, jerking to a stop only to turn its attention somewhere else. It fought against the effect just as Daniel had, but it didn¡¯t seem to be able to break through. Then, without a sound, the creature slunk into the darkness, its glowing eyes dimming with each step until it vanished into the shadows of the forest. Daniel exhaled sharply, his body still tense with the adrenaline. The creature was gone, for now, but he couldn¡¯t let his guard down. The mental effect had saved him, but it had also kept him rooted to the spot. His gaze drifted back to the fortress. The strange, towering structure still loomed in the distance, a massive silhouette against the darkening sky. He hesitated. The creature was still out there somewhere, and there was no telling what else might be lurking in the shadows. After a moment, Daniel made up his mind and turned toward the fortress, his steps cautious but deliberate. The creature had been kept at bay by the mental effect, but he didn¡¯t know if that would hold forever. If something stronger came along, it might break through. The fortress seemed like the only option now, even if it came with its own dangers. Daniel¡¯s heart pounded as he stepped into the fortress, the air thick with the scent of decay and mildew. His hand clenched around his Even Cooler Stick, feeling its rough surface beneath his fingertips. The comforting texture was the only thing keeping his nerves from completely unraveling. He had no idea what was waiting for him in this place, but whatever it was, he had to remain vigilant. The fortress loomed around him, its ancient stone walls crumbling under the weight of centuries of neglect. The wind whistled through the buildings, the sound sharp and lonely in the silence. He shivered as the air grew colder, the chill seeping into his bones and tempting him to turn back. But he didn¡¯t. He couldn¡¯t¡ªnot until morning. As he moved through the outer courtyard, his boots crunched over loose gravel and dry leaves. He stopped for a moment, noticing large burrows dug deep into the earth. The edges of the holes were ragged and uneven, with loose soil spilling out and forming small piles around them. He couldn¡¯t make out any details from where he stood, but the sight made his pulse quicken. His eyes flicked from shadow to shadow as he entered a large stone structure, one of the buildings mostly untouched by time. He looked around, finding himself in what appeared to be an entrance hall, with numerous hallways branching off into darkness.Stolen story; please report. And then, he saw it. A tall figure, moving slowly down the hall. It seemed to be wearing armor of some kind. For a brief moment, Daniel hoped he might have found someone else¡ªsomeone he could ask for answers about where he was or what was happening. But as it moved closer, details became clearer: just like the fortress surrounding them, parts of it seemed untouched by time while other sections were decayed. Half of a bleached white skull was visible where its helmet had rusted away. Daniel¡¯s breath hitched. What the hell is that? His first instinct was to run, but his legs wouldn¡¯t obey. He was frozen in place, watching as the figure got closer, dragging one leg behind it in a strange, unnatural limp. The figure¡¯s armor was old, rusted and cracked. Its movements were mechanical and jerky¡ªlike a puppet pulled along by its strings. Finally, he regained control of himself. Quickly hiding behind a broken pillar, Daniel barely dared to breathe as the figure continued its slow march down the hall. As it passed, he stilled, pressing himself against the cold stone. He had to stay hidden, had to stay quiet. His heart was racing, his entire body trembling with fear. That wasn¡¯t a person. It had to be some sort of zombie or something. As the sound of its footsteps faded, Daniel exhaled shakily and stepped out from behind the pillar. Staying low, he kept his back against the wall, his movements cautious and deliberate. He was completely out of his depth, but he needed to keep moving. Tightening his grip on the stick, he crept forward, heading towards one of the hallways. The passage stretched out before him, dark and foreboding. The floor was uneven, cracked and broken, and the walls were overgrown with moss and vines. It felt like stepping into an ancient temple, claimed by nature and time. But as he moved deeper, something caught his eye. An area where the stone floor shifted abruptly. One part of the hallway had the same uneven, broken stone, but ahead, the floor was solid, clean, and seemingly untouched by the ravages of time. The walls, too¡ªat first weathered and crumbling¡ªwere suddenly pristine. The stone was smooth, undisturbed, and eerily perfect. A shiver ran down his spine. He couldn¡¯t make sense of it. How could something remain intact while everything else around it decayed? What was this place? What was that thing he had just seen? Before he could think further, a soft scrape echoed through the hall¡ªa dragging sound that made his blood run cold. Daniel¡¯s eyes snapped to the end of the hallway just as another figure came into view. It was dragging itself along, its body bent at an awkward angle. One foot was planted on the maintained part of the floor, while the other was trailing behind, barely attached. The torso was twisted, its armor cracked and ruined, revealing the skeletal remains beneath. The figure moved in jerky, disjointed motions, like an old puppet whose strings had been cut¡ªexcept for one. Its foot jerked forward¡ªpristine and unblemished¡ªdragging the rest of its body behind it, the torso and limbs swaying unnaturally. But as it crossed into the intact section of the hallway, something changed. The moment the rest of its body crossed into the more maintained area, the figure jerked upward as if pulled by invisible strings, its armor creaking as it straightened and rose to its full height. Daniel¡¯s breath hitched as it stood, still jerking slightly, its hollow eyes now glowing faintly in the dim light. He stepped back, instinctively pressing himself into the shadow of a nearby column. Panic surged through him. He had to run; he had to get out of there¡ªhe had no idea what this was or what it was capable of. Then, his heart dropped as another noise broke the silence¡ªthis time, from beneath his feet. He barely had time to react before a mass of black legs surged up from the cracks in the floor. Massive, writhing insects, each one the size of his hand, swarmed from the gaps in the stone. Their bodies were covered in dirt and grime, and the speed they moved at was terrifying. They scuttled across the floor like a flood, racing toward him with hunger in their every movement. Daniel¡¯s pulse quickened, his grip tightening on the stick. He swung at the nearest bug, and the moment it made contact, the creature crumpled, lifeless. It was no use, however¡ªmore surged forward, coming at him from every direction. He didn¡¯t have time to think. The air grew thick with the sound of the insects¡¯ clicking legs as they neared. He had to get out. He had to move, or they¡¯d tear him apart. Turning, he bolted for the nearest door, hoping it would lead to safety. His feet skidded across the uneven stone floor, his breath ragged and sharp as he sprinted. The bugs were close¡ªtoo close. Their chittering and clicking grew louder, a constant, unnerving rasp that echoed through the silence of the fortress. They were relentless, their movements swift and unyielding. There was no way he could outrun them forever. He reached the door¡ªa heavy wooden frame, the grain warped and uneven. Peculiar holes filled with dried remnants of rot and decay marred its surface, but he didn¡¯t have time to inspect it. He wrenched it open, throwing his body against it as he slipped through and slammed it shut behind him. The moment the door clicked into place, he collapsed against it, panting for air. The bugs weren¡¯t far behind. He could hear them scratching and scraping at the wood. But for now, they couldn¡¯t get through. He looked around¡ªtrying to gather himself¡ªand took in the room he had just entered. It was a small personal library, well-maintained and orderly. Rows of neatly arranged books lined the stone shelves, their spines worn but intact. Soft, glowing orbs of light hovered near the ceiling, casting a warm, steady illumination across the room. The air smelled faintly of aged paper and leather, a stark contrast to the decay of the hallway outside. His heart still raced, his limbs shaky from the rush of fear. He gripped his stick tighter, his knuckles turning white. What the hell am I even doing here? Ding! Before he could spiral further, a screen appeared in front of him. Quest Complete: Explore the Fortress You¡¯ve ventured deeper into the fortress! For surviving, you receive +1 Dexterity, +1 Willpower, and +1 Perception. Taking a deep breath, Daniel forced himself to relax. As the adrenaline that had been surging through him started to fade, exhaustion quickly took its place, settling over him like a heavy weight. His body felt sluggish, drained. I won¡¯t be able to run like this. He glanced back at the door. It seemed to be holding. Thick and sturdy, with a heavy iron bolt, it looked like it had weathered the fortress''s decay for years. If it had lasted this long, it should hold for at least one more night. He¡¯d try to remain alert, but he was struggling to keep his eyes open. He needed to rest, even if just for a little while. For now, he was safe in here. Before lying down, he decided to take a quick look at the bookshelves. His fingers brushed lightly against the spines of several books, the cool texture of the leather comforting. He pulled out a thin blue volume, its delicate gold trim gleaming faintly. It looked old, its pages yellowed with age. Opening it, Daniel found the text to be written in a neat, flowing script that he couldn¡¯t read at all. After a moment of frustration, he put it back. His gaze drifted to the next row of books, and he pulled out a thick tome filled with detailed illustrations. At first, he thought it might be useful, hoping it would shed light on the beasts that roamed the fortress. But as he flipped through the pages, he quickly realized the descriptions were written in a language he couldn¡¯t understand. Despite the foreign text, the illustrations were vivid and intricate, offering glimpses of strange and terrifying creatures. He couldn¡¯t make sense of the words, but the drawings alone were enough to capture his attention. He turned the pages, his curiosity piqued. The creatures varied wildly¡ªsome with limbs that twisted in unnatural ways, others with eyes that seemed to watch him as he flipped past them. He was about to close the book when a particularly grotesque image made him freeze. It depicted a creature, its body stretched out over a victim, with jagged, bloodstained claws tearing into the person¡¯s back. The victim¡¯s ribs were exposed, their lungs visible as the monster pulled them outward, as if savoring the slow agony. The creature¡¯s eyes gleamed with malicious glee, and the victim¡¯s face twisted in pain and terror, their mouth open in a silent scream. Disturbed and a little queasy, he returned the book to the shelf and laid down on a large cushioned chaise, the soft fabric inviting rest. He pulled his legs up, trying to get comfortable, and then brought up his System Screen. Status Name: Daniel System: Quest Stats Strength: 2 Constitution: 2 Dexterity: 3 Intelligence: 9 Willpower: 8 Perception: 10 He stared at the screen for a moment, taking in the numbers. He still didn¡¯t fully understand how they worked, but at least they were growing. Maybe tomorrow, he¡¯d have a chance to improve them further. For now, though, the weight of exhaustion was too much to ignore. With a quiet groan, he finally gave in, settling deeper into the chaise, his body aching from the tension of the day. The moment his eyes closed, sleep quickly overtook him. The soft glow of the orbs above cast a gentle light, and the sound of the scratching bugs was now far behind him¡ªreplaced by the stillness of the library. Chapter 5 - The Fortress II Good morning, Daniel. Due to your actions during the previous day, you have been awarded the following stats: Strength +1, Constitution +1, Dexterity +1, Intelligence +2, Willpower +5, Perception +6. What in the¡? Daniel stared at the screen that had woken him up. At first, he¡¯d been pleased to confirm that stat updates were a morning occurrence, just as he¡¯d hoped. Yesterday¡¯s screen had been straightforward enough, awarding him a handful of stats. But as he stared at today¡¯s update, his initial satisfaction gave way to confusion. I only earned, what, four stats yesterday? How in the world did I end up with sixteen? He rubbed his eyes and looked again, half-expecting the numbers to change, but they didn¡¯t. The screen just stayed there, silent proof that what he was seeing wasn¡¯t a mistake. This didn¡¯t make any sense. Yesterday¡¯s haul? He could explain it¡ªsort of. It was possible to tie it to specific quests. But now? This was over the top. Yesterday had been¡ hectic. Exploring the forest, breaking through whatever was hiding this place, and then running and hiding from both bugs and reanimated corpses, he¡¯d been active, sure. But this? Sixteen stats in one day? He replayed his actions, trying to piece it together. He thought about the quests he¡¯d completed¡ªthe ones he could remember at least¡ªand how they might tie into his stat increase. There had been a lot of exploration ones, which could explain the Perception boost, and he had gained Willpower from finding this place. Still, as he went over the details, it didn¡¯t quite add up. He couldn¡¯t match every stat boost to a specific quest. A thought crept into his mind¡ªtraining. Was it possible the System didn¡¯t just give rewards based on quests? Could it instead be factoring in the effort he¡¯d put in along the way? That would explain a lot. But then why such a massive jump? Willpower and Perception alone accounted for eleven points, more than double the rest combined. Those kinds of easy gains didn¡¯t make sense. If the System handed out that much from simple actions then anything that had a system would be monstrously strong¡ªunstoppable, even. The idea left him unsettled. If something this simple could result in that kind of power, what else was the System capable of? Daniel shook his head to clear those thoughts and pulled up his status. Status Name: Daniel System: Quest Stats Strength: 3 Constitution: 3 Dexterity: 4 Intelligence: 11 Willpower: 13 Perception: 16 He stared at the numbers for a long moment, a faint sense of satisfaction creeping in. They were big numbers¡ªor at least bigger than they¡¯d been before. Testing them seemed like the logical next step. Quest Gained: Test your stats You¡¯ve grown since you first appeared. Put your newfound strength to the test by experimenting with each stat. Why not start now? Daniel focused on the far wall, narrowing his eyes slightly as if willing his Perception to activate. What he saw nearly made him stagger. Every groove, crack, and imperfection in the stonework stood out in sharp, vivid detail. It was like seeing the world in high definition for the first time. He blinked, stunned. Yesterday, he¡¯d been too preoccupied¡ªand his increases too incremental¡ªto notice the difference. But now, with the quiet of the moment and the chance to focus, the effect of his boosted Perception was undeniable. Curious, he strained his ears, and the world sharpened even further. A faint skittering sound reached him from outside. His stomach tightened, and a shudder ran through him. The bugs. They were out there, somewhere, moving. He didn¡¯t know exactly how he¡¯d deal with them, but for now, he could put that off and focus on testing his other stats first. His eyes returned to the screen, and Daniel hesitated. Willpower was the next largest stat¡ªit made sense to test it next. But how? What even was Willpower in this context? After a moment¡¯s thought, he decided to keep things simple. One step at a time. Intelligence was the next largest stat after Willpower, and at least he had some ideas on how to measure its effects. If he figured out a way to test Willpower later, he could always come back to it. For now, focusing on something concrete seemed like the smarter approach. During his high school years, Daniel had competed in several mental math challenges. He hadn¡¯t been a standout competitor¡ªusually finishing somewhere in the middle¡ªbut he knew his general speed and accuracy, even after years away from it. He hadn¡¯t thought to test this after the wolves earlier, mostly because he¡¯d wanted to get away from that clearing as quickly as possible. Between the constant movement and the looming threats, there hadn¡¯t been much room for experimentation. But now, with the time and quiet to concentrate, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to see what such a large Intelligence boost could actually do. He started with mental math, challenging himself with increasingly complex calculations. Numbers and equations seemed to slot together effortlessly, his thoughts moving faster and with more clarity than ever before.Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. He didn¡¯t have any way to keep accurate time, but he could tell he was solving problems far faster than he¡¯d ever managed before. Next, he tried reciting the alphabet backward. It was a little silly, but it was something that had always tripped him up in the past. ¡°Z, Y, X...¡± Daniel started. The letters rolled off his tongue smoothly, one after another. By the time he finished, he felt a grin spreading across his face. He couldn¡¯t help but grin, a giddy thrill bubbling up inside him. He¡¯d always liked the idea of getting magically smarter¡ªlike a supercharged version of himself. Now, it was real. This wasn¡¯t just a boost; it felt transformative. Feeling the rush of newfound confidence, Daniel scanned the room. His eyes landed on a thick, wooden chair tucked against a nearby desk. Solid and heavy, with ornate carvings hinting at its craftsmanship, it seemed like a good test for his Strength. He stepped over, gripped the chair by its arms, and lifted. The weight was substantial, probably more than he¡¯d normally attempt, but it didn¡¯t feel as heavy as he¡¯d expected. His muscles tensed as he hoisted it higher. The effort was far less taxing than he¡¯d imagined a day ago. He set it down with a satisfied exhale. Okay, so that¡¯s how that works. Next, Daniel reached into his pouch and pulled out a handful of small, smooth rocks. Why not try a bit of juggling? He¡¯d never done it before, but maybe with the boost to his Dexterity, it was possible. He tossed the first rock into the air, followed by the second. It felt clumsy at first¡ªhis hands moved too slowly, and the timing was off. One rock slipped, and he barely managed to catch it before it hit the ground. But after a few tries, he started to find a shaky rhythm. The two rocks bobbed unevenly in the air, his movements jerky but improving. With growing confidence, Daniel tossed a third rock into the mix. The added challenge proved too much; he fumbled the rocks, sending them scattering across the floor. ¡°Not bad for a first attempt,¡± he said with a small grin, picking them up again. He didn¡¯t get far enough to feel like a natural, but he could tell his hands were quicker, his reactions sharper. If this is where I¡¯m starting, maybe I¡¯ll get better with practice. When it came to testing Constitution, Daniel wasn¡¯t sure where to start. He assumed the stat had something to do with physical resilience, but how could he test that without pushing himself into danger? No immediate answers came to mind. For now, he decided to wait¡ªmaybe the system would offer a suggestion, or he¡¯d figure it out in the heat of the moment. Ding! Quest Complete: Test your stats You¡¯ve tested your limits¡ªthose you feel comfortable with at least! For your experimentation, you receive +1 Strength, +1 Dexterity, +1 Intelligence, and +1 Perception. Daniel glanced at his status to confirm the boost, then closed both screens. Turning toward the door, he noticed several holes scattered across its surface, allowing glimpses into the hallway beyond. He crouched down and peered through the largest one, taking a moment to survey the space. Now that it was morning, the hallway¡ªonce shrouded in darkness¡ªstill appeared as a mismatched blend of crumbling and intact features. But without the oppressive shadows, it felt less threatening, more inviting. Still, the danger was far from gone. Crawling along the walls were the same bugs that had chased him into the room the night before. This time, with no need to flee, Daniel was able to observe them more closely. They resembled a cross between a centipede and a mole. Their elongated exoskeletons glistened with a wet sheen, and dozens of spindly legs moved in synchronized waves as they burrowed through the cracks in the walls. Their mandibles clicked ominously, sharp enough to slice through flesh with ease. He couldn¡¯t help the shudder of revulsion that ran through him as he watched them. The bugs seemed to be going about their day normally. It was like he was inside an anthill undetected, able to observe them in their natural habitat. Beyond just the bugs were those corpse things. He¡¯d called them zombies when he first saw them, but they didn¡¯t look like any zombie he¡¯d seen on TV. The two he¡¯d encountered were like the fortress¡ªparts of them were pristine, while other parts were decayed and falling apart. He needed to get out of here. The previous night had left him with little choice but to stay, but now he had no excuse. The looming threat of both the bugs and the decaying corpses made it clear¡ªhe had to hightail it out of this place and never look back. Ding! Quest Gained: Escape the Fortress! You entered a dark and foreboding fortress in the middle of the night. Inside, you found corpses and bugs that both don¡¯t seem friendly. Escape the fortress at all costs. He mentally ran through the path he had taken to get to this room. It seemed like his best shot at escaping. With his newfound Intelligence, he was relatively certain he remembered the exact path. He took one last look around the room, scanning for anything useful. Stone shelves lined with books. A desk cluttered with paper, and what looked to be a quill. The chairs and chaise. He went over everything but couldn¡¯t find anything he thought would help. Maybe I could throw the chaise at a bug... The thought did little to ease the knot of anxiety twisting in his stomach. He had no idea what those things would do to him if he were captured, and the last thing he wanted to test was how his newly enhanced senses would handle pain. Taking one last, steadying breath, he leaned down to the hole in the door, peering through it to check the hallway one last time. The bugs were still there, their bodies scuttling across the floor and walls, oblivious to his presence so far. He psyched himself up and braced for what was coming. 3, 2, 1... Without any more hesitation, he pulled the door open and burst into the hallway. The moment he did, a cacophony of noise filled the air as the insect horde realized an intruder had entered their midst. Their clicking mandibles echoed off the walls, and the sharp scent of their chitinous bodies filled the air, as they skittered in a chaotic frenzy, eyes locking on him. He sprinted down the hallway toward the large entrance hall. There were none of those walking corpses to be found, which he was thankful for. Pillars, both broken and intact, lined the hall. Between them, he could spot paintings on the more intact parts of the walls¡ªpaintings of a powerful man, his eyes cold and glaring down. He hadn¡¯t been able to see them in the dark, and he didn¡¯t have time to admire them now. Wrenching open a door, he found himself face to face with a much larger version of the bugs he¡¯d been running from. Its segmented body was larger, its mandibles thicker and sharper, glistening with venomous promise. The creature¡¯s beady eyes locked onto his, recognizing him as prey. Both parties seemed surprised to see the other. ¡°Shit.¡± Slamming the door shut, his heart pounded in his chest, Daniel scanned the room. He could hear the echo of clicking mandibles getting closer. He couldn¡¯t go back down the hallway he had just left¡ªthere was a horde of angry bugs more than happy to rip the flesh off his bones. He looked at the other hallways. Some were more maintained while others were more decayed. Without much time to think, Daniel chose one of the more maintained hallways and started running. His breath quickened as he weaved through the stone hallways, the sound of his boots hitting the ground sharp and loud in the eerie silence of the fortress. Each step felt like a reminder of his presence. He darted from one hallway to the next, trying to stay focused on his escape, but the surroundings blurred with every turn. As he rounded a corner, he spotted something¡ªan imposing figure. Cloaked in dark armor, its back to him, a massive mace hanging at its side. Before he could make a move, the figure¡¯s head snapped toward him, its eyes glowing beneath its helmet. A split second later, the figure lurched forward. Heart racing, Daniel turned as fast as he could and bolted in the opposite direction, feet pounding the stone as he pushed himself harder. The figure''s heavy footsteps were relentless behind him, closing the gap with every stride. Despite its bulk, it moved with unnatural speed. Each movement was stilted, its limbs jerking with a harsh, unsettling rhythm¡ªas though its body could barely keep up with its own drive to chase him. His lungs burned, the sound of the figure¡¯s armor scraping along the stone growing louder. He pushed himself harder, the hallway seeming to stretch on endlessly as panic took hold. He glanced back¡ªtoo late. The armored figure swung its heavy weapon, a massive mace, aimed right at his head. The impact came with a sickening crunch. Despite the terror and confusion, Daniel could only think one thing before everything went black. Well, at least it was quick. Quest Failed: What¡¯s going on? Quest Failed: Escape the Fortress!
