《Fusion In a Fantasy World》 Chapter 1: The threat Cold, it was very cold, but it wasn¡¯t the type of cold that would make when you shiver, not the cold that formed icicles onto your beard, no this was the coldness of death. I¡¯m currently in a briefing, commander reeves was trying to sound professional and smart without actually knowing anything himself, that much was obvious by his rambling, no one else ever seemed to notice, however. Not that it was important right now, not that anything was really, I even let my coffee go cold, the last of my instant coffee sashes that I had been saving, they were quite the delicacy round here, oh well. Reeves was still talking, invasion this, death toll that, go here, go there, etc not that any of us would actually listen, there was too many contingencies involved with these things, the best plan was to realise that you can¡¯t plan, especially when you don¡¯t even know what you¡¯re up against. I was pulled out of his thoughts Elias to my left who we call wires, he was quite the tech wiz, he even got arrested once for bringing a ¡®bomb¡¯ to school, but after some further investigation it was found he had only built some form of computer, again not that this is relevant. He could also see malik who seemed to be nodding off, we call him T, not too sure why I just know its related to TNT, but TNT got on his nerves the big guys got a small fuse, ignore the pun. He used to be a heavy weight boxer before he started serving, he could teach you any form of self-defence you can think of, but he¡¯s no good with a gun, the guy can¡¯t even fit his paws round the holster properly, so now he just blows things up, with ¡®precision¡¯ he likes to call it, even seen the guy blow up a whole block on a stealth mission. Next up sunny, the scout, his name doesn¡¯t have a cool backstory or anything its just shadow, pretty typical if you ask me, sounds like an old gamertag you¡¯d used to see back in the day might as well be darkshadowdragonassasin69xx I wouldn¡¯t say that to him of course, otherwise how could I sleep with both my eyes shut, he seems to be a pretty chill guy though, not the talkative type. And finally, Kara the squad leader, she was the only current member of the squad that was actually paying the commander any attention, she liked to play the part, she has no specific skill set just a jack of all trades with a persuasive character if you asked me. but she earned my respect long ago, so I follow her along with these clowns. Oh and of course myself, Titus I don¡¯t have some special name or anything I¡¯m just called the smart dude or brains etc, it all started when the exams came and I achieved the best scores of the lot, not really that impressive when the competition is these collage dropouts and meatheads but then apparently my IQ was one of the highest ever recorded, can¡¯t say I remember the number I didn¡¯t really care that much back then, thought it was beneath me in a way. I¡¯m the tactician of the group not that it sounds too impressive, but I¡¯d say I¡¯m needed. After another 10 minutes of lecture, Reeves had finally shut up and now it was time to save the world baby that was hopeful optimistic thinking of course, the world wasn¡¯t going to be being saved. ¡°Hey malik, what was the plan again, I¡¯m sure you were listening right big guy¡± I asked knowing dam well the guy wouldn¡¯t remember even if he had his eyes open. ¡°Why don¡¯t you tell me smart arse¡± he sounded like a mocking caveman however that¡¯s just how he speaks he doesn¡¯t know what sarcasm is Then the leader Kara stopped the two ¡°shut it, both of you¡± then she carried on ¡°all we know is that some unknown threat has appeared in out skies and is now invading, out task is to kill as much of the bastards as we can and of course save civilian lives¡±If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it. ¡°What exactly is this unknown threat, I know it¡¯s unknown, but someone has had to of seen it right?¡± this time Elias or wires had asked he sounded slightly shook. No one answered Elias¡¯s question, but they were all asking the same question in their own minds, just exactly what are we up against. The truth is all of them knew it was likely going to be their last mission, they were the front lines of some alien invasion, all of them felt the breath of death growing heavier on their necks, but it was their job after all, and if not them then it would be someone else. They all boarded the armoured rhino gx it was a personal SUV carrier with a turret gun mounted on the top. Good old T will be on the gun with his dead shot accuracy, lets just hope there are that many of these invaders so he can¡¯t exactly miss. ¡°You don¡¯t think it¡¯s actually aliens, do you?¡± Sunny asked, his voice barely more than a whisper. ¡°If you¡¯d asked me that under any other circumstances¡ªor on any day other than this¡ªI¡¯d have said no,¡± Titus replied. He paused, his gaze distant for a moment, then continued. ¡°But based on everything I¡¯ve heard, and depending on your definition of ¡®alien,¡¯ I can say with certainty that¡¯s exactly what we¡¯re heading towards.¡± ¡°What do you mean by that, Brains?¡± T asked, his deep voice cutting through the tense air. Titus turned to him; his tone measured but firm. ¡°I mean our planet is being invaded by some force from the outside. What exactly they are? Alien, monster, God? How the hell am I supposed to know?¡± That seemed to satisfy them, at least for now. One by one, they nodded, the explanation clicking into place with the scraps of information they¡¯d been given. ¡°Alien, monster, God? Who cares?¡± T said, cracking his knuckles. ¡°Let¡¯s give ¡¯em hell.¡± ¡°Well said, big guy,¡± Tara finally spoke, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. The convoy was heading in the complete opposite direction to every other vehicle in sight they had an empty and open road, the evacuation must be happening right now based on the traffic on the other side of the road, it didn¡¯t seem to be going to plan however, there was lots of congestion and shouting happening, leaving many vehicles at a standstill. Above, the steady thrum of helicopter blades beat against the heavy air. Military choppers crisscrossed the skies, their searchlights cutting through the gathering gloom as if looking for something unseen. The occasional roar of a jet screamed overhead, rattling the vehicle windows and setting everyone¡¯s teeth on edge. The barricades came into view first, looming metal and concrete barriers stretched across every potential entry point into New York. Tanks idled nearby, their massive barrels pointed outward, a silent warning to anyone foolish enough to try and breach the perimeter. Soldiers manned the checkpoints in grim silence, their faces hardened by fear and resolve. Titus couldn¡¯t shake the unease crawling up his spine. The city skyline loomed ahead, but it wasn¡¯t the familiar sprawl he¡¯d grown up seeing in movies or news reels. This version of New York was shadowed, shrouded in a creeping darkness that seemed unnatural. The air felt heavier the closer they got, pressing down on them with an oppressive weight, up in the sky was this giant black triangular ship that seemed larger than the sky itself, in fact putting into perspective it might be larger than the earth itself, hovering in the sky could only be described as a war vessel. ¡°Doesn¡¯t feel right,¡± Sunny muttered from the passenger seat, his voice barely audible over the engine¡¯s hum. ¡°No kidding,¡± Titus replied, his eyes fixed on the horizon. Even the distant glow of city lights, usually a beacon of life, seemed muted¡ªlike the city itself was holding its breath. Further up, a checkpoint officer flagged their convoy through with a terse wave. Behind him, a hastily erected barricade of sandbags and razor wire stood guard against an enemy no one could see. ¡°Think they¡¯re stopping people from getting in,¡± Sunny said, nodding toward the barricades. ¡°Or keeping something from getting out,¡± Titus muttered, his voice grim. The words hung in the air, heavy and final. For a moment, no one spoke. Outside, the world felt like it was unravelling, the thin veneer of control stretching to its breaking point. ¡°Eyes up,¡± Kara¡¯s voice broke through the comms, sharp and commanding. ¡°We¡¯re almost there. Whatever this is¡ we¡¯re stepping right into the thick of it.¡± ¡°How can we even go against something so large, isn¡¯t this futile?¡± T said his lips quivering, it didn¡¯t look right on the big guy. The convoy pressed on, the road ahead narrowing as the city loomed larger. Dread pooled in Titus¡¯s chest, cold and unyielding. Whatever awaited them on the other side of this empty road wasn¡¯t something any of them were prepared for. It was the kind of cold you didn¡¯t shiver from¡ªthe coldness of death. Chapter 2: Contact The convoy rolled to a stop just outside the city limit. The silence that followed was oppressive, broken only by the faint hiss of air brakes and the creaking of metal as the squad got out. The troops moved purposefully, but their faces showed the uncertainty that was chewing them up. They were the only ones out there, the place felt dead, like some wasteland. Everything was still in place no one had bothered to take anything with them, it felt unsettling. Shop lights were still on but no one was there tv¡¯s still played but no one watched, it was kind of lonely and depressing. The first sighting came moments later, emerging from the shadows beyond the flickering streetlights. At first glance, it was impossible to define¡ªa shifting mass of blackness that seemed to drink the light around it, a shade of black that you couldn¡¯t even see. Its form twisted and stretched unnaturally, flowing like liquid one moment and solidifying into jagged, sharp angles the next. "Contact," Kara''s voice crackled over the comms, steady but tense. Titus froze, his heart hammering as more of them appeared. Some were tall and slender, their limbs elongated like grotesque shadows come to life. Others were squat and wide, hulking brutes with shapes that defied logic. No two were alike, each a chaotic manifestation of form and function, yet all radiating the same sense of danger. The creatures moved with an uncanny fluidity; their shapes blurred and slid into new configurations as they progressed. One moment, a sinuous, serpentine form crawled along the road surface; the next, it heaved itself up to reform into a spiky, impossible tower. A second entity elongated its body, insinuating its misty form into the intervals between the barricades before hardening into a clot of thorns. "Jesus Christ," Sunny whispered, her voice trembling. "What are they?" "Don''t matter," Kara snapped. "Focus up. Engage on my mark." Titus gripped his rifle tightly as his mind worked. They had trained for combat, for battlefields of flesh and blood. But this? This was something else entirely. The creatures moved like predators, their shapes blurring with each change in intent. They were malleable yet immovable, adapting to every obstacle with uncanny precision. The first shot cracked out, flat and rippling through the street. One of the bigger creatures recoiled as a bullet struck it, its form rippling like water. For a moment, it seemed to falter; then it surged forward, its mass hardening into a spear that lashed out with deadly speed. "Open fire!" Kara barked. Suddenly the street erupted into chaos. In strobe light of gun fires, the tracer rounds shot out to meet the oncoming horde. The creatures did not fall like any living thing Titus had seen: some went down, their bodies unspooling into pools of inky blackness that hissed and spat against the pavement; others soaked up the impact, morphed, changed shape and form, adapting¡ªand the more they were attacked, the less predictable they became. One of the smaller creatures sprang forward, its form compressing into a lean, low-slung shape that moved with terrifying speed. It leapt at titus, its limbs hardening into jagged spikes mid-air. "Malik, left!" Titus yelled. T responded instantly, a well-placed explosive tearing the creature apart mid-leap. But where one fell, two more emerged, their forms writhing as if born from the shadows themselves. If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. As the fight kept blared the convoy was almost in a retreat, they kept losing ground to the abominations, less and less shots landed and the creatures movements became more and more sporadic and irregular. "They''re learning," Titus muttered under his breath, his stomach sinking. "What do you mean?" Sunny yelled back, his voice tight as he let loose with another burst. "They''re learning to adapt to us," Titus said, his face grim. "Every shot, every move¡ªthey''re learning how to fight us.". KARA: "Fall back to secondary position. Regroup and reassess. This is not a fight we can win head-on." Her voice was calm but urgent, cutting through comms. The squad began to fall back, movements coordinated but strained, as the creatures pressed forward. Each step backward felt like a yielding, the weight of the unknown bearing down with each passing moment. Titus spared a last glance at the creatures: their fluid shapes an incarnation of chaos and death; formless, black, endlessly mutable, they were like nothing humanity had ever known. Malik, despite the beads of sweat rolling down his forehead, nodded and sprinted toward the mounted heavy weapon on the rear vehicle. The sound of gunfire and unearthly screeches filled the air, but Malik¡¯s focus was unwavering. Titus gritted his teeth, watching the creatures¡¯ relentless advance. They weren¡¯t just adapting¡ªthey were evolving. Every time one fell, it reformed, reshaping into something even deadlier. What had started as scattered forms now moved with an almost hive-like coordination, their shifting shapes adjusting to the squad¡¯s every tactic. ¡°We need to keep them guessing,¡± Titus muttered to himself, his mind racing. ¡°If we let them get ahead of us, we¡¯re done.¡± The heavy weapon roared to life, its booming reports momentarily drowning out the chaos. The rounds tore through the advancing creatures, their amorphous bodies splattering into pools of inky blackness. For a moment, it seemed to work, the relentless advance slowing as the creatures retracted, their movements hesitant. ¡°Yes! That¡¯s it, T! Keep firing!¡± Sunny yelled, his rifle still barking in tandem. But Titus wasn¡¯t so sure. He watched as the pools of darkness began to stir, the liquid-like forms coalescing back into shapes. This time, their bodies seemed denser, their movements more deliberate. One of the creatures shifted into a jagged form, its hardened exterior deflecting the heavy rounds with sharp, metallic clangs. ¡°Damn it,¡± Titus cursed under his breath. ¡°They¡¯re not just adapting¡ªthey¡¯re learning. Faster than I thought.¡± Kara¡¯s voice cut through the comms, her tone sharp. ¡°Brains, we can¡¯t hold them off like this. What¡¯s the plan?¡± ¡°We need to keep switching up our attacks,¡± Titus said quickly. ¡°Change patterns, change weapons, anything. The more we make them adapt, the more time we buy. But¡¡± ¡°But what?¡± Sunny pressed, his tone frantic. Titus hesitated, his mind grappling with the grim reality. ¡°But it¡¯s a stalling tactic at best. We don¡¯t have infinite ammo or infinite options. We can¡¯t outlast them like this.¡± The squad fell silent for a beat, the truth of Titus¡¯s words sinking in even as the fight raged around them. ¡°We need an edge,¡± Kara said finally. Her voice was steady, but there was an urgency beneath it. ¡°Something they can¡¯t adapt to.¡± ¡°Like what? A miracle?¡± Sunny shot back, his frustration bubbling over. Titus¡¯s gaze flicked to the sky, where the choppers still circled, their searchlights sweeping the battlefield. An idea began to form, reckless and desperate. ¡°Not a miracle,¡± he said slowly, his tone thoughtful. ¡°But maybe we can use their own adaptability against them.¡± ¡°What the hell are you talking about?¡± Kara asked. ¡°These things adapt to whatever we throw at them, right? But adaptation takes time¡ªat least a few seconds. What if we hit them with something they can¡¯t adapt to fast enough? Multiple attacks, layered and simultaneous.¡± ¡°You¡¯re saying overwhelm them,¡± T said from the gun, his voice strained but steady. ¡°Exactly,¡± Titus replied. ¡°They¡¯re fast, but even they have limits. If we can throw enough at them at once¡ªdifferent weapons, different tactics¡ªit might be enough to break through. Even if it¡¯s just for a moment. And if that doesn¡¯t work, lets hope someone nukes this place¡± Kara nodded. ¡°Alright, Brains. Let¡¯s do it. Everyone, listen up. Sunny, you¡¯re on explosives. T, keep that heavy gun firing. I¡¯ll coordinate fire patterns. Titus, you come up with the rest.¡± Titus took a deep breath, his mind racing as the creatures pressed closer. If this gamble didn¡¯t work, it might be their last. But it was a chance¡ªand right now, a chance was all they had. ¡°Alright,¡± Titus said, gripping his weapon tightly. ¡°Let¡¯s give them hell.¡± Chapter 3: A Sacrifice The squad moved with renewed urgency, each member snapping into their roles with the precision born of desperation. Malik kept the heavy gun roaring, its deep, thunderous bursts shaking the ground beneath them. Sunny worked quickly, rigging explosives along the convoy¡¯s perimeter while muttering to himself under his breath. Kara barked orders, her voice cutting through the chaos like a whip, directing fire and rallying the soldiers. Titus, perched behind cover, recalibrated his rifle¡¯s scope, his sharp eyes scanning the advancing horde. He could see them shifting¡ªadjusting. The creatures moved as one, a single, nightmarish mass of darkness that split apart and merged again, like water endlessly flowing and reforming. Each individual attack only delayed their advance for a moment before they adapted, reshaped, and pressed on. ¡°They¡¯re spreading out!¡± Titus yelled, firing off a shot that sent one of the smaller forms sprawling. It disintegrated into a pool of darkness but reformed almost instantly, its new shape even deadlier than before. ¡°We¡¯re running out of time here!¡± Kara snapped back. Titus¡¯s mind raced. They couldn¡¯t hold the line much longer. The creatures weren¡¯t just adapting individually¡ªthey were part of a singular force, learning and evolving as a whole. Every bullet fired, every grenade launched¡ªit all just fed the collective intelligence driving them forward. ¡°Sunny, detonate on my mark!¡± Kara shouted. ¡°Ready when you are!¡± Sunny replied, his hands trembling as he gripped the detonator. ¡°Wait!¡± Titus called out, his eyes narrowing on the horizon. He could see something¡ªa massive shape emerging from the darkness. It moved with deliberate, terrifying intent, towering over the others. ¡°What the hell is that?¡± Sunny whispered, his voice barely audible. Kara¡¯s voice cracked through the comms. ¡°If we don¡¯t stop that thing, we¡¯re done. Focus everything we have on it!¡± The creature looked like an amalgamation consisting of at least 100 of its counter parts, if before you could sense the air of death, now you could feel it. Looking at the giant, it didn¡¯t look possible to harm the thing, the pure size of it made you realise you were only in the pond but now you were in the sea. The convoy erupted into coordinated chaos. Bullets and grenades flew toward the massive entity, their explosions lighting up the dark like fireworks. The creature hesitated briefly, its form rippling under the assault, but then it surged forward again, faster and more relentless than ever. ¡°Now, Sunny!¡± Kara shouted. Sunny slammed his fist on the detonator. The charges exploded in a deafening roar, tearing through the advancing creatures and sending shockwaves across the battlefield. For a moment, everything seemed to stop. But then, the mass shifted. The smaller creatures surged forward, covering the larger one as it pressed on, its form twisting into a spear-like shape. It struck the first vehicle with brutal force, flipping it like a toy. Soldiers scattered, their screams lost in the chaos. The giant amalgamation was still moving, barely harmed by the blast that could¡¯ve taken out a whole block of houses, the thing seemed to be immortal, there was nothing any of them could do. ¡°T! Keep firing!¡± Kara yelled, but Malik¡¯s gun fell silent. He was overloaded with the smaller creatures, the creature¡¯s tendrils had pierced the turret, dragging Malik and the gun into its writhing mass.If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. ¡°No!¡± Titus shouted, his voice breaking. The squad was falling apart. The creatures overwhelmed the convoy, their unrelenting force consuming everything in their path. Titus¡¯s gaze darted around, searching for any chance¡ªany way to turn the tide. His eyes landed on a nearby refinery, its massive storage tanks looming like ghosts in the dark. A spark of hope ignited in his chest. The tanks were filled with volatile fuel¡ªenough to cause an explosion that could level the area. ¡°Titus, what are you thinking?¡± Kara¡¯s voice cut through the comms, strained and desperate. ¡°Just keep firing, if we don¡¯t make it, I¡¯ll make sure they also won¡¯t make it¡± ¡°Understood, it was short but sweet Titus¡± she replied soberly There was only Titus, Kara, Sunny and Elias left, however one of them was going to going the big guy soon. ¡°We¡¯re running out of ammo and time!¡± Elias shouted, blood streaking his face as he fell back toward the group. "Kara!" Titus barked. "We have to get those things in that building. If we can lure them in and blow it, we might be able to wipe them out!" "Are you insane?" Kara shot back, firing at one that had wandered too close. "You''d destroy half the city!" "Better half the city than all of us!" retorted Titus. "It''s our only hope!" Kara hesitated for only a moment before nodding. "Alright, you heard him! Fall back to the building! We''ll make our stand there!" The team was quick on their feet, covering each other as they fell back toward the looming structure. The creatures gave chase, their shrieks and growls echoing through the ruins. Titus lobbed a grenade over his shoulder, the explosion slowing the horde''s advance. At last, they came to the building with its yawning entrance, like the maw of some giant beast and Titus knew it might as well of been. Inside, one could feel that the air was heavy with the acrid smell of chemicals. Old machinery and rusted barrels lay everywhere on the floor, their contents long forgotten but still dangerously unstable. "Sunny, lay charges on the bottom of those tanks," Titus ordered, pointing to a bank of rusted vats stinking of petrol. "Kara, Elias, cover him!" The team sprang into action, movements choreographed amidst the chaos. Sunny rushed to plant his last explosives while Kara and Elias opened fire on more of the creatures that flowed into the building. "Titus, this charge, better work!" Sunny bellowed as he finished the charge. "It will," Titus said, though he wasn''t entirely sure himself. He glanced over at Kara, their eyes meeting for a brief moment. She nodded, understanding the unspoken weight of what he was about to do. "Everybody, fall back!" Titus bellowed. "Get out of here, now! And make sure you find cover¡± "What about you?" Kara demanded. "I''ll bring them in," Titus said. "Get ''em all in before we blow it." Kara opened her mouth to protest, but Titus cut her off. "Go, Kara! That''s an order!" Reluctantly, Kara and the others turned to retreat; their silhouettes receded into the night. Titus turned back toward the horde; rifle raised. He fired his rifle time and again; each shot drew the horde deeper into the structure. They were surging toward him now, becoming more frantic and aggressive in appearance. When he was sure most of them had entered, Titus backed toward the tanks. The creatures were almost on him, their forms blotting out the faint light of the fires outside. Titus waited till his squad had found cover, he knew there was a possibility that even his sacrifice wouldn¡¯t save them, but he had to try otherwise he¡¯d still die a worthless death at least now he could potentially save his fellow comrades lives as well as put a dent into the invading forces. "This is for my squad, and for earth," Titus growled, fetching a flare from his belt. He scraped it across the floor, the intense red glow cutting through the darkness ¡°GO TO HELL!¡± With a final roar, he hurled the flare at the tanks. The explosion was instantaneous. A giant fireball filled the building, and a shockwave tore through the surrounding area. The creatures were incinerated, their forms reduced to flying ash. Outside, Kara, Sunny, and Elias stood in silence, watching the building cave in on itself as flames licked high into the sky. The silence that followed was deafening. "Titus¡" Kara whispered, her voice breaking. But there was no answer. Only the crackle of flames and, in the distance, the dying shrieks of the creatures. Titus had done it¡ªhe had saved them. But at the cost of his own life. So she had thought, next thing Kara saw was another wave of the same creature however there was new variations and more of them as well as what looked to be human like figures leading them.
