《Black Forge》 001 - New companion Chapter 1 ¡®¡¯¡¯ 997 , 998 , 999 .. ¡®¡¯ The bright summer¡¯s sun pierced through the crumbling white clouds . The light gently laid on David¡¯s skin as he did his handstand push ups . He was drenched in sweat , each droplet being reflected off his chocolate brown skin- only his lower half had not been seen by the sun . His ink-black dreadlocks hung low , reaching for the tall grass below ¡®¡¯ 1000 ¡®¡¯ With a loud thud David hit the floor ,the tall grass felt comforting , like resting on a bed of clouds . He had been doing his training even before the sun showed it face to the Midburrow . To his left was the sword his sister used in battle . Despite the many battles the sword had endured it remained firm , as the day it was first forged . ¡®¡¯ I promise I¡¯ll bring you back ¡ somehow ¡®¡¯ he says , gripping the sword tightly . David went to the Star Piercer Guild , it stood out from rest of the other guilds in the kingdom due the sponsorship of the Hawthorne household - the sponsorship was a mutually beneficial , by supplying the funds for the guild , the guild would assign adventures to protect their land from monster attacks or raids . The guild stood as a testament of the kingdom¡¯s strength and magnitude. The towering monument pierced the sky , covered in the banners of the Hawthorne chest fluttering proudly in the wind . The air was filled with a bustling of adventures - different voices flooded the room , some of joyous laughter , plotting and arguments as some roamed to and fro the guild . Memento¡¯s of great battles and noble deeds dressed the walls . On the notice boards were names of criminals and their bounties . The guild members were adorned with great armor , cloaks and weaponry forged by the finest of blacksmiths . It was a place where both warriors and strategists shared a table in unity . David walked up to the receptionist¡¯s desk , noting that there weren¡¯t any new adventures like the previous day . The receptionist recognized him , she smiled softly - desperately trying to hide her sadness. Among everyone in the guild she stood , not because of her beauty or uniform - she stood head and shoulder above everyone in the guild . At first glance it would¡¯ve been hard to believe Melissa was not an adventurer . ¡®¡¯ David , it¡¯s ¡ it¡¯s great seeing you again , ¡®¡¯ her eyes filled with joy and sorrow . ¡®¡¯ I heard abou- ¡®¡¯ ¡®¡¯ Thanks you , Melissa ¡®¡¯ After a brief silence , she regained her steadiness . She lays the adventurer¡¯s application in front of him . ¡®¡¯ So what brings you to the guild ? ¡®¡¯ ¡®¡¯ any quest available ? ¡®¡¯ ¡®¡¯ About 5 km to the east , close to a mining village . I take it that your level is high enough ? ¡®¡¯ ¡®¡¯ I¡¯ma be fine , thanks Mel ¡®¡¯ He yells running off . ¡®¡¯ You forgot to sign ! -¡¯¡¯ she sighs ¡®¡¯ just forget about it ¡®¡¯ *** The next day rolled around , bringing with it a pale light of dawn spilling of the jagged edge of the mountain reach . The village became silent , what was once a prosperous town filled the joyous laughter became quiet , only giving way to the sways of the leaves of the trees . Hidden between towering mountain ranges , with snow adorned peaks in the distance . Stoneveil was located next to a river , between the village and mountains laid a thick massive forest .Year round the town is layered in a light snowfall , with haunting screams of the wind through mountain pass . ¡®'' Elder this can¡¯t continue like this ¡®'' One of the village said angrily , ¡®'' We can¡¯t rely on Gabi ¡®'' They all congregated into the town hall , despair and fear hung over the wooden building . ¡®'' Settle down , everyone ¡®'' the orange bearded blacksmith said . ¡®'' Thank you , Charles ¡®'' the old man said before standing up , ¡®'' I understand how and why you are terrified ¡®'' he says pausing briefly ¡®'' A adventurer from The Heavenly Piercer guild should be arriving any moment - ¡®'' , like it was divine preordained David opened the town hall¡¯s old wooden doors , as he walked through toward the elder he could hear snippets of conversation ¡®'' Is he who the elder requested ? ¡®'' , ¡®'' it can¡¯t be look at him ¡®'' , most were curios to who this mysterious warrior was . The once- polished armor he wore tarnished , it didn¡¯t look durable enough for any adventurer , the various marking and dents and make shift repairs stood as witnesses . On his back he carried a black sword , the Raven Blade a legendary sword that was forged with rarest metal of them all , black steel . ¡®'' I am truly thankful you arriving so soon ¡®'' the old man said .Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. ¡®'' I tried gettin¡¯ here quicker .. ¡®'' ¡®'' It¡¯s okay sonny ¡®'' ¡®'' What has happened ? ¡®'' ¡®'' Strange things has been happening lately , it¡¯s been weeks since the first body appeared - the whole family was found dead ¡®'' ¡®'' Was it a animal ? ¡®'' ¡®'' That¡¯s what we all thought but they all were as pale as ghosts with two little bite marks on their necks , most folk have been on edge ever since that day ¡®'' ¡®'' When do ya think it¡¯ll attack ? ¡®'' ¡®¡¯ Probably tonight ¡®'' ¡®'' It could be a vampire , but if it is , how¡¯d it get past the barrier ¡®'' he thought before turning around , some still gossiping among themselves about David , ¡®'' Where¡¯s the towns priest ? ¡®'' he asked , a young girl emerged from the crowd , her eyes were as oceans honey bathing in the sunlight , soft and inviting . Naturally the village was suppose to have a church where they would masters would teach apprentices how to create a barrier but due to their fortune monsters never populated the region until recently . ¡®'' Why didn¡¯t set up a barrier ? ¡®'' his voice gentle but firm , his gazing unwavering . The question pierced right into her soul , she could feel a lump forming in her throat as she tightly gripped her golden staff , the thought of explaining her own incompetence and why she couldn¡¯t save those who she considered her own . She knew exactly why - the fear became too great and she froze . Her heart raced even faster , she tried to calm herself , to think of something to say , anything , anything that would fix her mistake . But no words laid on her tongue , her mind was scrambled . Before she could even realize she had said what enchained her heart . ¡®¡¯ I ¡ I don¡¯t know , ¡®¡¯ she had whispered it , barely loud enough for herself to hear , ¡®¡¯ I don¡¯t know why i couldn¡¯t ¡®¡¯ her eyes became watery . She felt everyone staring at with pity and silent criticism , even if they said nothing she knew what they felt and thought , ¡®¡¯ Why didn¡¯t you put up the barrier , Gabi ¡®¡¯ . Her breathing became shallower , she had to go somewhere far , just anywhere from here . Before they could comfort her , her legs moved on their own , her feet echoed through the wooden lounge . She ran , and ran until she had no sight of the village . She hid in the shadow of the giant oak tree beside the snow , her tears vigorously flowing ¡®¡¯ after all this time i still can¡¯t do it ¡®¡¯ she whispered to herself , ¡®¡¯ Why am I so useless ? ¡®¡¯ She hugged her knees to her chest , wrapping her arms tightly around herself . ¡®¡¯ I¡¯m sorry ¡®¡¯ replayed in her mind . She knew her apology wouldn¡¯t be enough , nothing would ever bring them back . *** The afternoon sun sat lonesome in the sky , on a canvas of orange and red . The cold winter¡¯s wind , carried clean scent of fresh pine and damp earth . She had cried herself to sleep , the faint warmth of the fire wrapped itself over her , awaking from her slumber . She slowly opened up her eyes , her world still very muffled . She had never left her spot , her body only in an awkward position she likely slept in - but before a the flames reached with its orange tips toward the heavens . ¡®'' why did i run so far into the woods ? ¡®'' she though while desperately looking for something familiar . And then she noticed it . A heavy cloak draped across her , it was far too large for her frame , smelling faintly of smoke , battle and leather . It still held heat , a stark contrast to the ice snowy of the Odlheim winter . She gazed back into the fire , it reminded of David question he asked her earlier - the one question she no answer too . Why didn¡¯t you put up the barrier ? The guilt and shame blossomed again , this time sharper than before . ¡®'' I¡¯m still so useless , when they needed me the most i failed them . And now . I¡¯m just ¡ hiding ¡®'' . ¡®'' I don¡¯t think ya useless ¡®'' David voice rumbled behind , causing her to stiffen . Her heart skipped a beat and her muscled tensed as she was about to flee again . ¡®'' I ¡ didn¡¯t mean . I didn¡¯t know.. ¡®'' she tried apologizing for earlier , but she only stumbled over her words . She wanted to explain why she had run away. Her world began to shrink , the air became heavier . She wanted to make everything stop . She tried desperate to cling to warmth of the fire but there was no escaping . Not without facing it . ¡®'' Sorry for scaring ya ¡®'' he says laughing awkwardly after taking off his helm , revealing their how similar in age they are . For a moment , she blinked , her mind processing the image before her . Her feature were not what she expected . From the depth of voice and how battle hardened he seemed , it all suggested a man far older then her , experienced . She viewed him as a towering warrior , figure of strength .¡¯¡¯ He¡¯s ¡ just like me ?¡¯¡¯ ¡®¡®Is there somethin¡¯ on face ? ¡®'' he asked her , slight blushing . ¡®'' n-no¡¯¡¯ in trying to respond she choked on her own saliva . He let out little laugh , his face radiating with life and youthfulness . She had looked at her own hand finally realizing her own youth and inexperience . His expression soften ¡®'' You ain¡¯t useless ¡®'' slowly she turned from him . His tone not harsh but stead and reassuring , ¡®'' I won¡¯t be able to stop the vampire without your help ¡®'' he said before added the rabbit he had caught onto the fire . In his voice was no anger nor judgment , she tried saying something - anything - but no words escaped her mouth . She felt her shoulder sagging , as if the her load had lost a little of it¡¯s weight . ¡®'' It¡¯s my fault their dead ¡®'' she whispered , barely audible . ¡®'' when they needed me the most I let them down ¡®'' The was a long pause . He didn¡¯t rush to reassure her or to tell her that everything was going to be all right , because he knew - she needed to come to that conclusion by herself . ¡®'' Just cause you¡¯ve fallen doesn¡¯t mean you can¡¯t get back up ¡®'' She stared at him for a long moment , the sting of guilt was still raw but for the first time there was something else - something more , a faint ember of hope . She wasn¡¯t sure if she¡¯ll could ever live to the exceptions she had failed to meet but somehow being around him made it seems a slightly possible . For a moment neither of them spoke , Then breaking the silence his deep voice rumbled , like lighting , calm and steady . ¡®¡¯ We haven¡¯t introduced ourselves, right ? ¡®¡¯ he said , handing her the roasted rabbit . ¡®¡¯ I¡¯m David Gideon . ¡®¡¯ . Her stomach roared , the excitement of finally eating overwhelmed her - her face became crimson with embarrassment . ¡®¡¯ I¡¯m Gabi ¡ Gabriela Alira . ¡®¡¯ she replied, drooling from her waiting for her food to cool down .¡¯¡¯ Nice to me ya . Gabi ¡®¡¯ he says, laughing a little . He leaned forward slightly , spreading the rough he made of the area , hovering his finger over all the possible locations of the creature . ¡®¡¯ We are here and If i was a vampire I¡¯d probably be by the graveyard ¡®¡¯ Gabi nodded at him , still munching on the roasted rabbit ¡®¡¯ This is so good ¡®¡¯¡¯ she thought . ¡®¡¯ You think we can ¡®¡¯ she said , flickering to see the map but not really seeing anything . He glanced at her , grinning a little ¡®¡¯ Only if we work together ¡®'' 002 -The Hunt Beneath the endless deep indigo sky , lies a desolate graveyard shrouded by fog seeming untouched by time . The faint whispers of wind can be heard through the overgrown - with each gust the dying trees danced , forsaking their last remaining leaves . The overgrown weeds consumed the tombstone of the unfortunate , only to be remembered by the grieving moss- covered angelic statues , the damp air clung to you like a child to its mother , bringing with it a haunting silence . The gloomy shadows loomed over the uneven ground , seemingly bringing figures eager watching their next move . The rusty gates creaked as they swung it open , the ground was riddled with gnarled roots and hidden hole , a icy chill seeps into Gabi bones , she swallowed hard , frantically her heart beat, growing louder and louder , louder than any other noise , she had never dreamed of her first quest being in a graveyard , the raw terror made her legs weak and her heavy - but she had faith that''ll turn out okay ,maybe it was David''s presence . She hadn''t noticed how tightly he had gripped his sword , and just staring into blood-lusted crimson eyes of the beast that stalked them . The figure emerged from behind the mausoleum - spreading it''s massive leathery wings , enveloped the little light the moon provided , covering in a total darkness . Smelling the fear leaking from them , monster''s lips form a sadistic smile , stretching from ear to ear . '''' I am eternally grateful to you for saving me the hunt , as your reward you may play with my sons and daughters '''' , All those thought to have been in eternal slumber , returned in a ghoulish manner , someone decaying corpses with rotten flesh hanging from their once youthful bones , others raging skeletons reading for battle . Gabi''s eyes started to water , her throat dried up with every step on the horrific creatures , her knees had buckled giving in under the overwhelming fear , she had never seen such horror before , '''' Gabi , just focus on releasin'' enough holy mana to keep them away '''' He looking down at smile at her softly . '''' Leave the rest to me '''' . The growls of the undead rumbled a low , ''''grrroooaaarrrr '''' as they shuffled closer . He leapt toward the horde , effortlessly slicing through their undead bodies . '''' They wont stay down '''' he said , panting heavily, slowly he raised his sword again reading to clear the horde . One of the zombies leapt at him vigorously , sinking its rotten teeth into the his steel shoulder plate . But instead of tearing through the metal plate , the impact of the sickening crunch , followed a violent explosion . It''s skull shattered , showering the surrounding undead in blood and bone , its lifeless corpse collapsed onto another of it''s kin . The vampire lunged with a unnatural speed at Gabi , before David could react to stop him , the beast retreated . It''s pale skin burnt a putrid brown , it hissed in pain , David rushed it readying to slay the beast . In the nick of time he moved out the way , David''s blade landed on a tombstone, shattering on impact . His muscles tensed as he lunged forward , swinging his blade at the vampire , '''' Foolish knight , you a thousand years too slow '''' it said , dodging the blows effortlessly , he closed the gap between him and David , landing a devastating blow to David''s stomach . He is sent upward , with an insane speed , his limp body flew right through tombstones . '''' Sir Gideon !! '''' she yelled . '''' dammit i got careless again '''' he says , struggling to get up . He desperately hung onto consciousness - as his vision became blurry , his strength started to fail him . Before Gabriela''s mind could catch up , her legs moved , running to heal David . '''' No , no ¡ please don''t die '''' She frantically said , trying her best to remember the words to perform a healing hymns . He gritted his bloody teeth , he knew several his bones were broken but staying down would only get them both killed , he noticed that the mana that radiated around was slowly disappearing . Every muscle screamed in protest as tried getting up , his fingers trembling - clawing at the ground for leverage . With all her might Cora tried lifting him , his armor was way too heavy for her slender arms , tenaciously the dead walked toward them in great magnitude . '''' Blood , i need blood to heal '''' the unholy creature proclaimed , once more is sprouted it''s enormous wings readying to fly to Stoneveil . David had grinned under his blooded helm - it had fell for the trap they had set up the previous day . { " Why are we planting these strange objects ? '''' Gabriela had asked , holding the cold metallic object '''' Remember last nights plan of trappin'' our guest in own house '''' he replies before handing the rest of silver rods . '''' Do you need me to add holy mana to them ? '''' '''' Yep , we gonna place the buffed up rods all around the graveyard '''' } He flew straight into the barrier , the raw power of the enhanced holy mana engulfed the one side of his face , searing his skin . Faintly a thin, curling smoke rose from his skin , dragging along a sickening stench of burnt dead flesh . The monster hit the floor with an insane speed , crashing into the mausoleum .Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site. ''''Can you still buff me ? '''' '''' but what if I can''t.. I''ll ¡ª '''' '''' Remember how easy it was for you to use mana earlier , just do the same thing - I promise to get us outta this mess '''' She had no response , but it was another matter of life or death - mustering the little courage she had, she placed her hand on the back off his armor , golden - white mana started glowing from her hands , she boosted the his bodies the natural amount of adrenaline his body could produce, boosting his movement speed and strength . He effortlessly sliced through horde , he sprung backward back to Gabriela - he pulled her closer , one arm firmly around her , it not being to harsh but just precise enough to ensure he safety . Before she could even finish their gasp , her world began to blur - as color became no more that flashing streaks . Each step turning into a leap , by the second his movement speed greatly increased - the wind rushes past her , holding onto to her pearly white dress . He maneuvered through the gravestone with a dancer''s elegance , effortlessly dodging the dead , dashing toward the mausoleum . The monster lied on the ground , impaled by the crypt''s spiked cross - beside him was an ocean of his own blood , the monster was almost slain . '''' You repulsive mortals dare look down on me '''' he growled with the little energy he had , cough blood in the process . '''' Where ¡ is the End ¡Fortress ? David asked , '''' You are a.. fool among fools , mor.. tal '''' he replied , with a brunt , blooded smile - before finally dying . David''s body went limb , hitting the ground with a thunderous thud - the adrenaline wore off and the gravity of how much damage he and the fatigue crushed him . He tried moving a muscle but it was all in vain , thoughts of this being the end was circling his mind - he desperately tried clinging to consciousness , maybe Gabi''s terrified cries could help , but that too , yielded no fruit. *** The bright morning sun glowed over the horizon with a serene warm, golden light , amid the sunrise an array of soft reds and pinks spilled, casting an ethereal beauty over the town Stoneveil . The air quietly awakened, bringing alongside it a drifting gentle breeze . In the distance a shadow figure road toward the village , she was adorned in all black leather , save for her large fur cloak and gloves she wore . Peaking out behind her was the bundle of arrow she had collect and the giant wooden monstrosity she calls a crossbow . Ripping the through the harmonious chirping of the early morning bird , was the echoes of her proud steed steps . '''' Of all the places , he choose to go to the coldest one '''' she thought - the cold , with its icy love , kissed her on its her cheeks and nose , reddening it for the world to see . The corners of her mouth lifted , forming a smile of relief - when her laid eyes on what seemed to be a silhouette of a town in the distance , ''''At l-l-last, I s-s-shall be f-f-free of this wretched c-c-c-old. '''' . With efficiency she drew her crossbow . The rustling of the bushes beside her abruptly brought her joy to a momentary halt , startling her and her horse . '''' Calm down , boy '' she utters , tugging on his lead line - creating more space between them and the unknown threat approaching them . She quickly drew her weapon to her face , '''' Reveal yourself at once !! '''' she yelled , reading to end any beast daring to ambush her . What revealed itself was not a monster , but a heavily fatigued Gabriela dragging a injured David on her back . Every muscles in Gabriela body yelled in torment and anger , but she rebelled , her determination overwhelmed her desire to fall . '''' Must .. get .. to .. town '''' she muttered , barely audible . Elara just stared at her , amazed at her resolve , David was almost twice her size but she relentlessly carried his unconscious body for several hours . Her vision became blurry - but she knew when she saw her village in this distance , that her mission was almost complete - all she needed was one final push then she would finally have done it , her body had reached its limit , all night''s walking had finally taken its toll on her .'''' Just a little ¡ further , Gabi . You cant let him¡ down too '''' before she could collapse , long slender arms caught . ''''It is alright¡ªyou have done more than enough '''' Elara said , greeting her with a warm smile . Gabriela could barely see the face of her savior - but the sincerity of the smile was all the confirmation she need , and with her last energy , she too greeted her with a smile . Elara lifted and placed the two on her horse , their combined weight posed no problem for him - it was one of the finest horses in the capital , one she watched grow from a foal to a mighty stallion . '''' You two are, without a doubt, cut from the same cloth." she thought looking at David and Gabi''s unconscious bodies - they rode for the town . When they arrived in the town , a elder man was sitting on his porch , lost in thought . His trance was shattered when he heard the rhythmic clip-clop of Elara''s horse . '''' Morning young visitor , Welcome to Stoneveil '''' he says , his adorned with a polite smile . '''' Good morning, sir. Might there be a healer available for these two? '''' she replies , smiling awkwardly . His eyes widened greatly when her notice it was Gabi , with all the energy his old body could muster he ran toward the horse , '''' Gabi , please be okay . What happened to you ? '''' , he says , searching a wound , '''' She must hail from this village'''' Elara thought , ''''No harm has befallen her. Look¡ªher chest still rises with each breath. '''' '''' sleeping ? like this this ? look at her it looks like she - '''' ''''- collapsed? Indeed, exhaustion seems the likely cause. She hauled David''s body from the battlefield they had fought upon. Judging by his condition, he is in dire need of medical attention'''' she replied , she the elder the dried blood by David''s nose . He let''s out a sigh of relief , '''' she ''s always caused me trouble from the day i found her on my doorstep '''' the old man says , smiling. '''' I''m sorry to inform young lady , that right there was our Healer ''''. 003 - Stygian Magus The clouds glided across the vast blue sky , the afternoon silently starred at everything below , punishing any who dare lock eyes with him . His body was drenched in an ice cold ocean of his sweat - deeply in thought he stared at the ceiling , maybe pondering if he should accept the call of the cloud- like a sapphire blanket . The regal curtain hung gracefully on the polished wooden floor , it reflected a small golden hew , hanging from above was a golden chandelier embossed with intricate details . The walls were embellished with fine arts , the kind you would find in art museums , - maybe that was just a testament to the skill of the owner of this room , he knew exactly whose house he was in , Elara Hawthorne , heir to The Hawthorne House . When he had tried lifting up his torso - a sharp pain pierced his side , a stark reminder of the growling battle he had survived the previous night . It had felt worse than any pain he felt before , one that made his ribs burn in agony , each breath was shallower than the last - intensifying the pain . He tried feeling where the pain was , gently brushing against the tightly wrapped bandages . '''' Dammit '''' , he muttered , his body started burning up again , enlarging the ocean of sweat around him . Beside his bed Elara sat reading , dressed in a long draping emerald green dress , except for the golden decorative corset belt . A long braid of crimson - red hair hung down her slender body . ''''Cease your movements, or you will only make things worse '''' She says , before applying a damp cloth on his forehead His expression sparked confusion in her , it was a mixture of annoyance and pain - '''' For someone whose life I''ve saved, you certainly show little gratitude. You were half-dead when I found you¡ I was astonished you were still breathing. '''' '''' Thanks '''' David said reluctantly '''' There''s no need for thanks¡ªthat is the duty of true companions. I see it as my noble quest to rescue you from your own ignorance and arrogance. Truly, what a Herculean task it has been. However, you should direct your gratitude to Gabriela. Had it not been for her efforts, you would have already joined the ranks of the dead '''' '''' where''s .. Gabi ? '''' ''''What a sight for sore eyes¡ªthough his body is broken, his thoughts remain with the one who has stolen his heart '''' She replies , her tone dripping with playful mockery. He hunched over , sweat beading down his forehead , his voice infused with pain . '''' Is .. she .. '''' he muttered through gritted teeth , each word adding more to his agony . ''''She is resting in the next room '''' Elara replied , smirking from ear to ear . '' ''You''re enjoying this , aren''t you ? '' '''' Every last second '''' The door creaked open , revealing a figure covered in white and gold robes , the scent of incense wafting in with him .His calm expression was in stark contrast to the scene before him - David in pain . '''' Thank you for arriving on such short notice, Segast '''' . Elara said , smiling softly . '''' I''m only doing the Lord''s work '''' he replies . He knelt beside , his hands glowingly a soft , gold and white light . ''''You''ve seen better days , David . '''' he said , his voice calm but laced with faint humor . '''' Hold on . This might sting '''' He let out a weak grunt , his lips curling into a painful smirk '''' No sermons , today ? It must be my lucky day '''' . Segast chuckled softly, hovering his hands above David''s broke ribs . The warmth of the healing spell spread across his torso , tingling at first before intensifying . He winced , trying his best not to groan as the magic did it''s work , mending the bones . '''' All done , I connected the bones - you truly have the Lord''s favor , the fact that none of the bones pierced your heart or lungs . You''ll need to rest for a few weeks than you''ll be back to normal . '''' '''' Thanks . Guess I owe you one '''' David replies , before exhales slowly . '''' Thank you once again for coming , Segast '''' Elara added on . One of the maids accompanied with Gabriela enters the room , the maid escorting Segast out . Gabriela rushed toward David bed side hugging him firmly '''' I''m so happy your okay , Sir Gideon '''' . '''' Oh my ¡'''' Elara thought , covering her mouth with her hand . '''' I''m .. still hurt '''' David''s cheeks reddened, his voice tight. After prematurely ending their hug , Gabi froze - she started burning up as a deep crimson flush crept up to her cheeks , spreading all the way to her ears . '''' Uh ¡ sorry , '''' she whispered . Quickly she averted her gaze , fidgeting with hem of her sleeve - failing to keep the corners of her mouth from curling into a small, embarrassed smile. '''' Shall I leave you two lovebirds to your matters ?'''' Gabriela eyes widened , her face burning even brighter . '''' No its not .. '''' '''' Stop teasing her , Eli '''' he says , trying to play it cool , though his smirk betraying him . '''' How''d you even find me ? '''' '''' Melissa has tasked me with keeping a watchful eye over you, fearing that this very situation would unfold. It was the first time I had seen my sister so distraught since the news of Cora''s passing. '''' '''' ¡ '''' David had no reply .This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it. *** Deep beneath the bustling city of Midburrow , sprawled an elusive labyrinth of interconnected tunnels leading to the lair of the most wanted criminals . Each tunnel was filled with intricate traps designed to ruthlessly dismember those foolish enough to try and venture through them - beyond each trap , the air was damp carrying a heavy scent of burning oil - lamps , their light was dim , perfect for those working in secrecy . Each shadow seemed alive - every corner gathered intel . They all congregated at the center , which they called Death''s Eye - it also served as an altar where new recruits would swear an oath of loyalty and silence . Their boss was a skilled assassin and thief dressed in all black leather except her short blonde hair , her name - Selene . Her bounty was one hundred thousand gold coins , the government had been looking for her for months on end - she was proud of her lighting- fast reflexes and cat - like agility . '''' How have the new recruits fared '''' she asked, sharpening her dagger . '''' The exceeding expectation , Kronnor and Draeven should arrive any moment '''' Kroger replied , watching their comrades from her office , some were refining their stealth kills , others mastering the art of lock picking and moving silently - and others hunched over parchment maps , plotting heists with meticulous detail . One of the spies came limping , drenched in his own blood and a cold sweat - his battered body was shaking uncontrollably . Everyone rushed toward him , '''' What happened to you ? '''' Drom , a asked a middle aged assassin asked . '''' A monster attacked¡ me .. he .. his on his way here ''''Kronor replied frantically - from the eastern entrance a pair of glowing eyes watched them from the shadows , it was as if death had come for all of them . Their bodies froze in place , the room went quiet - no one dared to move . A large metallic clang broke the silence , it was Selene''s knife . '''' What is this ? '''' she had asked herself , visibly shaken up by this unknown presence , she wanted to run but her body wouldn''t listen . She turned toward Kroger , his eyes widened , paralyzed with fear . '''' I have to run but where ? The northern entrance ? Will I even survive if I run ? ¡ I can''t fight it , I''ll certainly die . If run me and my comrades will die . Is there even a way out? '''' Selene thought . '''' Bring me your leader . Only the one who commands is , worthy of facing me.'''' he proclaimed , emerging from the shadows . His white angelic hair reached beyond his waist , his eyes a golden color none like they''ve ever seen before - the robe he wore was a pearly white , glowing for all the world to see . Reluctantly Selene came from the room she was in , '''' no one wanted to say a single - somehow they knew speaking out of terms would guarantee their deaths . '''' No . I''m ready to die . This ¡this thing isn''t human . '''' she thought , as their locked for the first time . '''' How fascinating . The leader of a guild of shadows and daggers is clothed in such beauty and shiny coins . But tell me , is it enough ? No , it''s far enough , your greed far exceeds your reputation. '''' With inhuman speed he moved closer to Selene , close enough to whisper in her ear . '''' I offer you a choice : Bring me another piece of the End Map, and I will grant you riches beyond your wildest imaginings¡ªtreasures so vast and ancient that even kings have longed for them. Gold, jewels, artifacts¡ things your kind has only dreamed of , Refuse, and I will show the true cost defiance '''' . '''' Choose wisely . I''ll be watching ,as always '''' Calmly he walked past everyone , before blending into the shadow once more . The cold , heavy air he brought - finally lifted . They all stood frozen in their places, no one daring to move . *** The inky - black sky blanketed the endless sky , enveloping The Hawthorne Manor was a full moon - the stars glimmered with no interruption , the clouds had been hiding . Alongside the forest behind the manor lurked the Selene and her soldiers , they were reading to slink inside the manor , '''' Boss , from what we gathered David the brother of Cora should most like have her piece of the manor , we too prepared for just in case he didn''t we sent one to her burial site . '''' Kroger whispered , cloaking himself from the light of the moon . '''' Good work as always , Kroger '''' Selene replies , '''' We can''t afford to fail otherwise ¡ '''' She thought , taking a loud gulp . They all marched toward the manor , leaping from tree to tree - the assassins moved like wreaths , their footsteps silent . They were draped in muted black and gray , their faces hiding by cloth masking . With ruthless and surgical precision they eliminated the guards patrolling the ground - silent as the falling snow , only leaving behind a faint scent of poison. Inside the David room the cold air blew , waking up Gabriela who fell asleep on the couch - when she had attempted to close it , a sharp blade was at her throat . Selene had softly placed her hand on Gabriela''s mouth , '''' You speak you die , understand ? '''' she whisper to Gabi . '''' Why is this person here ? '''' she thought before , nodding in agreement - piercing the silence of the night was the shrieking of a woman , before her body hit the floor . " shit ¡ i messed up '''' the young assassin muttered . Elara''s bedroom door flew open , before the assassins could even react she had stood behind them with her cross bow . ''''Your vile band of thieves! '''' she said , as her arrows pierced their bodies , another assassin lunged at her , reading to stab her with his poison knife . She skillfully evaded his attack , grabbed his lanky arm and drove the blade into his jaw . '''' Those idiots '''' Selene thought . The loud noise had woken David up from his sleep , '''' what''s happenin'' ?'''' he asked , frantically looking around , until he spotted Selene and Gabi - his eyes widened and anger began to stir up in him . '''' Let her go , you bastard ! '''' he yelled , reaching for his . '''' Stop right . Hand over the sword and the girl lives '''' Selene replied , as they moved to the center of David''s room . '''' Sir Gideon please help me '''' Gabi said , tearing running down her tanned brown skin . The door to David''s room burst open , '''' What are you scoundrels doing in my house?! '''' she yelled , holding a poisonous blade to Kroger''s neck ,'''' Just kill me already '''' He yelled . '''' Why did it turn out this way -'''' before she could finish her thought Kroger yelled , '''' No matter , boss . Complete the mission !! '''' . Hearing those sparked long forgotten memories , memories of when it all when she established the Shadow Council , it was only her and Kroger - he had always been her trusted advisor and protected like an older sibling . They swore to an oath of undying loyalty and secrecy - she never foresaw the day would arrive where she of all people would break the oath . She dropped the knife . '''' I am a fool among fools '''' she muttered , letting go of Gabi . Elara pushed Kroger to where Selene stood , and Gabi ran toward David . "I''ll ask again, and this time I expect a proper answer. Why are you scoundrels in my house ?! '''' she asked , raising the crossbow she held in her other hand . '''' Let''s make a break for it '''' Kroger whispered , '''' The End map , we were sent to retrieve the piece that Cora had '''' . '''' What !? . No way she''d have that '''' '''' But she did , the king entrusted her with protecting the kingdom''s most valuable treasure, for years and months we''ve been looking for -'''' before she could finish her sentence David leapt from Gabi''s grasp toward Selene - aiming his sword at her throat . '''' If you even think about touchin'' her graveside I''ll kill you '''' he muttered . She remained , stoic not in the slightest by his words , Krogar launched himself at David reading a punch to his bandaged ribs . '''' Stand down , Krogar '''' , Selene said , calmly . '''' Stop right there , baldy '''' Elara said, circling toward David''s bed - crossbow ready to fire . '''' You remember the day she found you , when you were all helpless and on the verge of death ? Why do you think that really happened in that village ? '''' '''' Don''t ever talk about that ever again '''' , He gritted his teeth , his eyes filled with anger and irritation , he placed the blade on her throat , yet she remained calm - no matter how angry he got , Selene knew that he was no killer . '''' Sir Gideon , stop it ! '''' Gabi cried , her cries weakened his resolve - he lowered his blade , he stared at the wooden floor , gazing at his own reflection . Only he was allowed to see how much it hurt to think about those memories . 004 - Mutations [ Six years ago ] The cold wind carried with it , an unrelenting rain that pounded down the scorching town below it - the rain sizzled when it came in contact with the roaring inferno . The fire had engulfed everything around bringing down the small , the air was heavy with the scent of corpses and ash . '''' Kill the monster ! '''' the young warrior yelled , it had claimed the live of many in a blind rage - it was not just a mere beast by a horribly mutated child , what once was a left arm , was now twisted malformed union of man and beast . The child''s eyes glowed a blood curling red but his eyes never ceased to water . The boy let out a thunderous roar , rooting all too the ground - it saw their fear and dashed toward reading to end their existences . Instantaneous his attack collided with the Raven Blade , the sword that belong to a legendary hero of Eldara , Anaya - her hazel brown afro swayed in the cold breeze . '''' Mel , get them to safety ! '''' she yelled , Swiftly Mel grabbed the young warriors and toke them to safety . When Anaya looked closer to the monster she noticed it , '''' Why is it a - '''' she thought , the monster over power her , nearly killing her . The beast came charging back at attempting to pin her down , she effortless dodged him , the exchanged last for a while . The monster would just attack and Anaya would dodge , '''' Why is she doing that ? '''' , Melissa asked . '''' It seems like she studying it movements and behavior '''' Segast replied , as he healed those the wounded . '''' But why ? '''' , Mel thought .With each missed attempted the monster grew in size , it''s rage was rapidly strengthening it , Anaya placed her sword back into it''s sheath . Swiftly she appeared behind him and knocked the monster out . The monster''s body went limp and he fell like a stone , reverting back it''s human form , it was a nine year old David . She placed the child on her back and ran toward her comrades . '''' Segast , can you heal him ? '''' Anaya asked , as she placed the boy before Segast . '''' I do not know but I''ll try '''' Segast replied , he hovered his hands over the child body , faintly it glowed white and gold . More and more section of the child''s body became a dark purple , the mutation was spreading rapidly until his body was engulfed with holy mana . It momentarily stop the spreading , '''' My apologies , I could only do so much '''' Segast said , he hung his head low . '''' You did enough to stop it '''' Mel said , placing her hand on his shoulder . '''' Captain , we''ll deal with everything here . That child needs to be at the Cathedral '''' Mel , added on . Anaya picked David up again and dashed to the forest behind them . '''' Just hang in there , soon you will receive the help you need '''' , Anaya whispered as she ran through the forest . *** [ Present Day ] '''' We''re not here because we want to be , if we leave without the fragment of the Map , me and my comrades will be killed . But ¡ if you manage to ensure my men''s survival I''ll tell who wants the map '''' Selene said , her voice ever so calm . Kroger just looked her way , not uttering a single word . '''' You expect us to believe you''ll help , when you just attempted to kill one of my friends '''' David replied , '''' You are correct . But there''s a greater chance of gaining your trust than facing him in battle . None of you could fathom what he is capable of . '''' Her eyes drifted toward the window , '''' He needs no army to find you , He sees everything , he knows everything . Your sister''s death was no accident , He knew she had it , and he''ll know you''re after it too . '''' He jabbed his blade right next to Selene''s neck - giving her a tiny cut . '''' Sir Gideon ! '''' '''' Bullshit , all of it is bullshit . You know nothin'' about me or my sister '''' '''' What if ¡ she is telling the truth ? Gabi proclaimed . '''' Why would I just ask for the Map ? She had a chance to kill me .. but she didn''t '''' . "As much as I loathe to admit it, Gabi raises a valid point. If her intent were truly murderous, she would have acted by now. Besides, even with our combined strength, we wouldn''t stand a chance against either of them.". '''' Elara said , Selene slightly smirked , amazed at Elara''s keen eyes and battle assessment . '''' But - '''' David tried thinking of something to say , anything that would cement her arguments , yet he had no answer - Gabi had a point , even though he hated it , he knew that if it was an assassination attempt everyone in the room would''ve been declared dead by morning . Elara lowered her crossbow , with a loud sigh ."If what you claim is true, and this ''He'' sees all, wouldn''t that mean he''s already aware of your betrayal¡ªand perhaps even orchestrated this very situation?"'''' Most definitely '''' Krogar replied , before anyone noticed he drew his blade to strike Selene down , just in time she ducked underneath - his knife hitting David''s blade with a sharp , metallic clang . The force reverberated through the air as sparks flew from the contact . In one swift motion , she wrapped her arms around David and slid toward the bed . Her eyes were locked on him , waiting for his next move . Before realized he was sitting next to Gabi - '''' How did she - ? '' he thought , it finally dawned on how far in skill gap was between Selene and him . The illusion spell began to wear off , the light around Kroger''s body began to shimmer , as if the veil was being pulled back - the light began to ripple like a pond . Different colors began to emerge as it''s true form was revealed .This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. Beneath the mask of what was taught to be human , emerged a corpse twisted by grotesque mutations - it''s skin was layered rotting flesh , scales akin to that of a serpent , and thick labyrinth of veins , radiating dark mana . The one side of his resembled the man Selene consider her brother , though it was horribly deformed . Across it''s face was twisted smiles , riddled with the grotesque amalgamations of various beastly features ; a maw filled with razor - sharp fangs . It starred at David with its glowing red eyes , piercing his soul . The feeling dread filled the room , they could all feel it''s killing intent .The beast launched itself toward David with a terrifying speed , its eyes filled with blood lust and a desire for carnage - its massive beast-like arm pulled back for a devastating blow . With a thunderous boom the monster flew through the wooden wall behind the bed , pieces of the wall flew everywhere - from the hole arose smokes and the loud roar of a hungry beast .No harm was done to Gabi or David - thanks to Selene''s lightning fast reflexes and reactions .'''' We need to leave ! '''' , Selene yelled .They wanted to process what they had just saw but there was no time they had to run or be ripped to shreds . They ran onto the long corridor outside the room , but when they taught had escaped one monster outside were greeted a few more , the corpses of the assassins that Elara killed came back to life and they too became nightmarish creatures . The monsters were feasting on the flesh of the maids , '''' Did you bring these monsters on purpose ? ''''David asked Selene , '''' He must be the one behind all of this '''' she replied , with her cat-like agility she leapt toward them and swiftly cut them down , creating a clearing for them . David had fallen behind , the injury placed him a world of unfathomable pain , with each the step pain became greater but he had no time to stop , Krogar busted through the wall onto the corridor . The beast salivated at the mouth , when it laid eyes on David , "Take a right¡ªnow!" Elara yelled , David heart started beating faster , but the pain was starting slow him down - his body was at its limit , one of his ribs broke again . The monsters rapid footsteps grow louder and louder , his stomach was turned into a million knot , with an insane speed the monster hurled itself at him , reading to rip into David flesh . Right before the monster could sink it''s teeth into him , Gabi pulled into the room - once more the monster crashed into another wall , '''' Barricade the door right now ! '''' Selene yelled as they pushed every heavy object in the room in front of the door . David fell to one knees , his on the area on pain , Selene extended her hand to him . He gritted his teeth , he wanted to reject her offer , but they needed to leave immediately and that he needed all the help he could get . She lifted him , placing his arm over her shoulder . he room they were in was her grandfather''s study - a massive room , each corner was filled with all sorts of books ranging from world history of all manor of literature . '''' Where is it ? '''' she aid , frantically pulled different books from the shelf . '''' What are you doing ?! '''' Selene yelled , pushing a clock toward a door . '''' Looking for a way out !!" She yelled . They could hear the monster risen form the rumble it found itself . '''' His gettin'' up , hurry up Elara !!'''' David . The monster continuously rammed against the wall , luckily the walls was made from the strongest wood in all of Eldara , Mammoth Oak . The room was originally made as an panic room with a secrecy tunnel leading outside the manor . Continuously the monster rammed against the walls , shaking the very foundation of the house . '''' Please hurry , Miss Elara '''' Gabi said , her voice riddled with fear . "I''ve got it." Elara said , she pull the massive book from the rack , the wall full of books moved forward revealing the passage .One by one they all ran through the barely lit passage way . '''' Where does it lead too ? '''' Gabi asked , '''' That I don''t know but I just want to be anywhere but here '''' she replied . Everyone except Selene was visible shaken up , by now such monsters had become a norm to her . The long trek made David reflect on what Selene revealed to him , his mind started to fill with questions : what if she spoke the truth ? , why would Anaya hide something like that from me ? , Did she not trust me ? Can i even get strong enough to bring her back ? '''' They reached a old rusty lady , what they presume led upward to a safe haven , far from the ''it'' , the hatch opened to somewhere deep in the dense forest . '''' You think the monster followed us ? '''' David asked , ''''We should be beyond its reach now ''''Elara replied , leaving just Gabi as the last to reach the surface . . ''''I''m so glad we escaped that thing .'''' Gabi said , being the last to climb out . Whats she didn''t not notice was emerging black smoke rising from where the manor was , Elara''s heart sunk . That was just not any old building it was one where she spent her whole life , the best days and the worst . Gabi had noticed how distraught she looked , even though there was nothing she could say to make her feel better , she couldn''t they only met a day ago . David placed his hand on her shoulder and gave her soft smiled painted in pain and anguish .
