《Let The Butterfly Touch You_ Quests to Reach Thalassa Grave # 4897》
Prologue___I just like to play the games...
Elowen soared through the shimmering plains of the Kaelith realm, a magical place between heaven and earth. The moon hung like a pearl in the sky, casting its soft light on the sparkling air. Trees with glowing leaves swayed gently in the breeze, their branches forming arches as if holding the stars. Beneath her, flowers in every color bloomed, filling the air with sweet fragrances. In this realm, Elowen, a moon spirit, thrived, bringing light to both the ordinary and extraordinary. Life here was full of magic and adventure. Elowen had always been drawn to the night sky, longing for freedom beyond her realm.
But today, a heavy feeling hung in the air. A deadly plague called Malice Bloom Plague had spread through one of the Kaelith villages, casting a shadow over the once-bright glades. Elowen felt responsible for this, as if her carelessness had caused the illness. The villagers were trapped in a fevered sleep that worsened each day. Every night, Elowen stayed by her mother''s bedside, offering empty reassurances while brushing the wet hair from her forehead. Her heart raced with despair as she hovered outside their cottage, covered in ivy. Her mind kept replaying the mistake she made, filled with regret.
"Maybe the new herbalist in town can help," Elowen muttered to herself. The thought of leaving her mother''s side was unbearable. Her eyes drifted across to the room. Her father lay there, motionless. Even in slumber, he appeared weak, his breaths labored. Elowen felt a pang in her chest, wishing there was more she could do¡ªthat she hadn''t let him go outside that day.
She stood up and checked the jar to find some money for medicine, but all she got were some coins, which were not enough. "I had to ask Balthazar for a loan. After the plague was over, I would work hard enough to repay him¡ª"
Her gaze dropped to her feet. She had spent most of it on healing herbs and supplies for the home, which was the very thing she needed to pay off. Her heart sank at the realization, but she had to get the medicine. She quickly made her way to the herbalist''s shop, her steps frantic as she passed through the familiar streets, now clouded with fear. Walking through the village, Elowen''s heart sank as she saw the people, their laughter silenced by the epidemic. She could hear children crying, their voices thin and shrill with panic. Mothers held onto their children, trying to soothe their fears. Many of the men wore grim expressions, carrying tools or bundles of goods on their backs. They passed Elowen as she hurried toward her destination, but they said nothing, their faces blank and emotionless.
Elowen arrived at the herbalist''s store, the door swinging open with a creak. Inside, a woman stood behind the counter, her eyes fixed on the papers laid out before her. The air was thick with the scent of herbs and potions. The shop was cozy, adorned with colorful vines and strange items. Shelves were filled with jars of ingredients, each promising either harm or healing. The elderly herbalist, with a knowing smile and piercing eyes, turned to face her.
"Elowen, dear! What brings you here?" she asked in a whisper that echoed in the quiet store.
Elowen pleaded, her voice trembling, "My mother is sick, and I need a cure. Please, anything to save her!"
The herbalist studied her closely, narrowing her eyes. "I can help, but it will cost you," she said thoughtfully.
Elowen''s heart raced. "I have money," she said, pulling out the Nimbus Notes she had gotten from Balthazar.
The old woman frowned slightly, eyeing the notes. "No, money won¡¯t do. There¡¯s another price to pay. Just a small one," she added, her tone cryptic.
Elowen was taken aback. This didn¡¯t feel right. If the herbalist didn¡¯t want money, what could she want instead? "What price do you ask?" she asked nervously, her hands shaking.
The herbalist leaned in, her voice low. "It depends on how much your mother is worth."
Elowen was confused. "What do you mean, ¡®how much my mother is worth¡¯? She just needs a cure!" But the herbalist¡¯s intense gaze and cryptic words made her uneasy. "What does that mean?"
The herbalist smiled knowingly. "You know exactly what I mean. I just like to play games."
Elowen frowned, but the herbalist continued, "I want you to find the nine simple keys."If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement.
Eager to help her mother, Elowen didn¡¯t hesitate. She signed the ornate contract before her, though a shiver ran down her spine. How hard could it be to find nine keys?
"This quest is just nine tasks," the herbalist said, her smile mysterious.
Elowen¡¯s heart sank, but before she could speak, the herbalist sent her off with a cryptic blessing. "Go forth, and may the moonlight guide you."
Elowen blinked, surprised by the strange treatment, but she curtsied and left the store, walking in a daze. She felt anxious, yet determined. "I have to save my mother, no matter what," she thought. She didn¡¯t understand the significance of her choice but felt something was wrong. "Now the whole village is suffering because of me," she thought, troubled. "The herbalist said it¡¯s just nine tasks."____But she lied!!
After a few days, she set off alone on her quest. She couldn¡¯t let anyone down. She had already caused enough trouble, and she had to finish this mission. Each quest pushed her to her limits, forcing her to face fears and challenges she had never imagined. She battled storms, navigated dangerous forests, and solved ancient riddles. With every challenge, she grew stronger, more resilient, and more determined.
But the deeper she went, the more the weight of the journey began to take its toll. The once-vibrant landscape of Kaelith began to feel heavy with doubt. But all these were beast quests, not the key quests which she had to play.
After completing 32 quests, Elowen felt almost invincible. She had overcome the dangers of Darkwood Forest, outwitted the Elder Tree, and survived the Misty Mountains. Each victory ignited a spark of hope within her, but doubts still lingered. What if she couldn¡¯t find the keys? What if she failed?

Why My Wings Turned into Tails?
Elowen lay in a forest, a dark and surreal forest filled with nothing but leaves as far as the eye could see. The sun had long since set, and the darkness swallowed her whole, leaving only the stars that glittered against the night sky as an occasional source of light and sound to guide her. The trees were alive; they whispered softly to one another in the wind that rustled their leaves. She heard them singing to her in the voice of a woman who knew the words. With that music, she heard her breathing, her own heartbeat... it sounded unnaturally loud, too loud for a place this quiet. Yet there was nothing that disturbed such peacefulness within sight, not even herself. There was something so calm about this quietness.
Her nine tails flowed in the air like water from all directions. They were so long that they dragged behind her and sometimes caught on other bushes and roots that seemed just a little bit out of place in a small clearing in the middle of the forest. Her eyes closed, and she drifted through this peaceful dream, almost unaware that she was dreaming. A sense of peace flowed down her spine as if the gentle breeze carrying these feelings had a soothing effect on those who dwelled within its depths. Suddenly, she opened her eyes as if she jolted awake at some thought or feeling. The dream ended abruptly, and her senses returned. She found herself sitting upright on the ground and looking around.
"What... what the hell is this..." she wanted to scream as she looked at her nine tails. Their indigo color resembled a black ocean under the moonlight now that she thought about it... "Oh god," she breathed and started running wildly through the forest. Her nine tails followed her as if by instinct. In fact, she felt when the tips brushed against the leaves of nearby plants to move faster, as if their own tails wanted to reach her, to keep up. Her fear reflected as her nine tails followed her and fluttered gently, almost lovingly. Her feet pounded against the Earth, her fur swirled around her neck, her teeth clattered. Her mind felt like it spun as images of people being slaughtered by the woods flashed before her eyes.
"Where did these tails come from?" She thought as she rubbed her back against the tree furiously, thinking she could get rid of them and then everything would go back to normal. Her heart raced as she thought of herself becoming a nine-tailed fox. But then she stopped and sighed as reality came back into focus and the pain of reality began to sink in. She couldn''t think of this now, not while her life was literally hanging in the balance. No, she had to find help, and that meant getting out of this forest somehow. But before that, she had to turn normal, like a human, because she was in the human realm. For that, she started searching for her leaf-shaped arm cuff which she used to wear in Kaelith to hide her real identity.
After a few minutes, she finally found what she was looking for and put it on. Her indigo hair was replaced with human skin and her tails vanished, leaving scratching marks on her back, where she tried to cut her tails off while rubbing herself against the tree. It hurt her but not much, so she managed. She breathed a sigh of relief as she looked exactly like she did in Kaelith. "But why did my wings turn into tails as soon as I came to Earth?" She thought. "I was a moon spirit there, and on Earth, I turned into a nine-tailed fox____how?"
She closed her eyes and shook her head to clear away all the confusing thoughts. It wasn''t time yet to think about such things. She needed to focus first. What should she do now? Her only option was to get out of this forest as soon as possible. Her deep indigo moon thread, flecked with silver specks, wrapped around her finger like a ring and followed her out when a soft, melodic hum filled the air, echoing like the distant ringing of a chime and drawing her attention. This soothing sound harmonized with the whispers of the forest, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Elowen often sensed its presence before she saw it. She noticed a sudden shift in the light around her. The forest sparkled, and the shadows deepened, hinting at the butterfly''s arrival. Just when she thought to look around, the Moonveil Butterfly appeared in a graceful swirl, its wings unfurling with a soft rustle.
It was a stunning creature, its wings shimmering with iridescent colors that shifted between deep yellow and soft silvers, reminiscent of a starry night sky. Each wing was adorned with delicate patterns that resembled celestial constellations, glimmering like tiny stars in the dark. The edges of its wings were laced with a faint glow, giving it an ethereal presence that felt almost otherworldly. With a flick of its wings, the butterfly danced in front of Elowen, its glow illuminating her surroundings. Its wings shimmered in the dim light of the forest. The melodic hum filled the air, creating a tranquil ambiance. With a gentle swirl, the butterfly gilded closer, its glow intensifying as it prepared to deliver its message. With each word, the butterfly''s wings pulsed with light, illuminating the surroundings and creating a mesmerizing display of shimmering patterns.
"__Elowen, seeker of paths unknown,
A journey awaited where the wild winds blew.
Follow the trail of the moonlit glade,
And seek the lost spirits in twilight''s shade.
Gather their whispers, let their stories unfold,
For within their tales, your purpose will be told.
But beware the shadows where the Arachnid lay,
A creature of darkness beneath starlit skies.
With fangs sharp and venom that chilled to the bone,
Prepare for the battle, for you were not alone.
Draw strength from the whispers, the spirits you found,
For their ancient wisdom sharpened your mind.__"
As it spoke, the butterfly circled Elowen, casting gentle light on her and the ground around her, making the moment feel magical. Each line resonated with Elowen, wrapping her in a sense of adventure and purpose.
Once the message was completed, the Moonveil Butterfly fluttered back slightly, allowing the words to sink in, its presence still shimmering with the promise of the journey ahead. With a final, graceful flap, it gestured toward the direction of the first quest, inviting Elowen to begin her adventure.
She let out a weary sigh, her voice laced with frustration. "Oh, Seraphiel, not now! I just wanted some rest....."
Her heart was heavy with the weight of her recent punishment, she felt the exhaustion settle in her bones. She had run nonstop ever since she arrived in this strange land called Earth with no idea how to return to Kaelith. For the past few days, she wandered around, trying to stay hidden and avoid detection. Yet every day, something new happened around her. Before she could gather her thoughts, the air around her shimmered with energy, and the quest system activated. A soft, glowing screen appeared, suspended in front of her, displaying four quests she had to complete before she could receive the main quest to leave the forest.

Elowen had to find nine keys that would unlock her path forward. Each key represented a different challenge, and she had to pass 1067/1100 quests to earn the right to depart. She closed her eyes and the holographic screen appeared in the air, reflecting the dashboard.
The screen glowed brightly, reflecting Elowen''s frustrated expression. The quests seemed to mock her desire for rest, reminding her that duty called louder than her wishes.
With a resigned sigh, she glanced at the Moonveil Butterfly, which fluttered nearby, its gentle glow still inviting and reassuring. Elowen knew she had to gather her strength and push forward, even if her heart longed for a moment of peace. The forest still held mysteries to uncover, and perhaps, within these quests, she might find a sliver of solace amid her obligations. With a small nod, she turned her gaze back toward the system, reading the list of four quests in an effort to determine where to start. It took her a minute to read over each quest again.
"Alright, let''s get this tutorial phase over with," she said quietly.

First Trial Quest___Finding the Firefly Lantern
Elowen was standing outside the huge dungeon, perhaps waiting for something or a signal to enter, or maybe she was afraid to do so. The forest seems cold and dangerous, especially after hearing about the dangers that lurk within the depths of it. But she couldn''t sit idle for much longer. She has to find all nine keys and return to her mother. The air shifts, and the Moonveil butterfly appears again, carrying the message. Elowen looks at the butterfly, then at the gate. She knows the guards are watching her closely. She looked at the notification bar, which appeared due to the Moonveil butterfly.

She took a deep breathe and looked at the dungeon in front of her. This is it. I''m going to complete all quests. The air shifts as she steps into the dungeon. She enters a vast, dimly lit chamber, its walls lined with ancient stone and strange symbols that pulse with dark energy. As she steps deeper into the dungeon, more and more of those markings appear, but they''re only visible when the lights pulse on or off. As soon as she crosses the threshold, a strange hum fills the air. The dungeon is alive, ready to present its first challenge. But something unexpected happens.
She stops abruptly as she hears something approaching, and turns around. In the distance, another light pulses on, but this time it''s moving in opposite direction, almost like a slow motion camera shutter. From the shadows, Elowen hears the sound of shifting feet, the rustle of clothing, the murmur of voices. She started walking toward the noises , trying not to look too anxious. She didn''t know why, but she sensed an uneasy feeling that something bad was happening. It felt as if something big was going to happen. Something important.
She saw one figure step out of the shadows. At first glance, she assumed he was some kind of beast, a demon or a monster. He had long, tangled brown hair that fell over his shoulders, pale skin covered with tattoos, and dark brown eyes that seemed to glow even in the darkness. He wore a black leather jacket with a leather band holding back his long locks, and pants ripped into pieces around his knees. His right leg was wrapped with bandages, and there were a couple of scratches on his face.
But he was not alone; there were fourteen other figures standing in the room, scattered throughout the space, their eyes fixed on her. They, too, are players, each of them ready to play their part in this twisted game. Elowen''s eyes widen in surprise. She hadn¡¯t expected to find anyone else here¡ªespecially not so soon. But here they are, other adventurers, their eyes glowing faintly in the dungeon¡¯s eerie light. Some stand frozen in place, others appear to be sizing her up. A few seem unbothered, absorbed in preparing for the trial ahead.
For a moment, she simply observes them, noting the differences in their appearances: a warrior with a massive sword, a mage with a shimmering staff, a rogue with a hood drawn low over their face, a knight clad in weathered armor, the metal glinting in the fading sunlight; a sorceress with eyes like molten gold, her robes flowing like liquid silk; a ranger with a quiver of arrows slung across their back, the tips gleaming sharp and deadly beneath the cloak of forest green; and a bard, her lute strapped securely to her side, a smile playing at the corners of her lips as though she already knew the outcome of this encounter. Each one was unique, a reflection of their chosen path, yet all were bound by the same unspoken understanding that the trials ahead would change them forever. There was an air of competition among them, tempered by an unspoken camaraderie, with each person aware that the dungeon had a way of twisting everyone¡¯s intentions into something far more dangerous.
Suddenly, a soft breeze stirs the air, carrying with it the scent of fresh earth and wildflowers. Everyone stopped and looked at each other in confusion before realizing what the scent reminded them of. For a moment, Elowen wondered if she was smelling perfume, but then noticed how the rest of the players'' faces changed, their expressions suddenly becoming surprised and tense as they saw it: the Herald butterfly carrying their message.
The Heralds are a special breed of enchanted butterflies that serve as both messengers and guides throughout the game. These butterflies are larger than ordinary forest butterflies, with wings that shimmer with faint, glowing symbols etched into them. When they appear, they come in small groups, each one carrying a different color or glow based on the type of message they bear.

3. Dimming Glow: Once Player takes the Firefly Lantern, its glow will begin to fade after one minute. If the player doesn¡¯t find the exit before it goes out, the entire dungeon will be plunged into complete darkness, making the quest infinitely more difficult.

The scroll disappear into dust, and the Herald butterfly vanish with a loud and gentle hum.
The game begins!!
Every move you make is a step toward life¡ or death!!
I still feel bad
The dungeon was silent, save for the occasional drip of water echoing through the stone corridors. It was an ancient place, forgotten by time but very much alive with dangers that sought to claim any who dared enter. Sixteen players stood at the threshold, their breaths shallow, their hearts racing. Each of them was a part of something far greater than they understood, but they knew one thing for certain: survival would be a test of both strength and wits.
A slight shiver ran through the hair on Elowen''s neck. She hadn¡¯t expected to encounter other players in this particular challenge. Her mind races for a moment as she weighs her options. Should she team up with them, or is this a race to the Firefly Lantern? The dungeon is designed to test everyone equally, but there is no rule about cooperation¡ªor sabotage.
She glanced over at Kael, who was sitting comfortably next to her. He wore a calm expression and didn''t seem bothered by the situation. Perhaps he had seen worse than this already. Maybe this wasn¡¯t such a bad thing?
Before she could ponder further, a small sound of excitement caught her attention.
"Ohh!!!" exclaimed a young girl dressed entirely in red, running towards the center of the room. "There''s a staircase here! I''ll bet there''s another door somewhere¡"

The players advanced cautiously, step by step, moving through the cold, dark corridors towards the staircase. They had no choice but to rely on each other, even if some of them weren¡¯t ready to trust completely. Ashlan¡¯s sharp eyes scanned the floor as they moved, his warrior instincts alert for any signs of danger.
Suddenly, a flash of blue flashed across the hallway. The color instantly alerted him, prompting him to glance behind him. There was nobody else there.
Ashlan narrowed his gaze as he turned back. ¡°Who''s there?¡±
"I saw nothing," Lyra muttered under her breath, gathering her focus as she prepared for any magical attack that might spring to life in the corners of their path.
Ashlan frowned.
"Are you sure?" Kael asked, eyeing the corner. "You seemed pretty interested just then."
Lyra nodded, though it was obvious that she was still uneasy. "Yeah. I''m sure."
The atmosphere feels tense as players begin to move, assessing the traps and the rules of the game. Elowen can¡¯t help but notice the flicker of excitement and fear in their eyes¡ªthere is something primal in the way they prepare, each of them calculating their moves carefully. The dungeon has thrown them together, but will they fight each other for the lantern or work as allies? There¡¯s a mix of uncertainty and greed in the air. Her instincts scream at her to remain cautious. In a game like this, alliances are fleeting, and every player is a potential threat. The dungeon does not reward the weak or the foolish.
The group reached the next intersection. As usual, the corridor had no windows. Instead, the walls were lined with torches that cast flickering shadows on the stone floor. Ashlan paused, taking everything in, trying to figure out what they should do.
¡°We need to decide how we¡¯re going to take it,¡± he stated finally, turning back to face the team.
¡°What do you mean?¡± Elowen wondered.
Kael leaned against the wall. ¡°If we don¡¯t do anything immediately, we¡¯ll get ambushed. Either way, we won¡¯t have enough time to find the Lantern Lantern. And since there¡¯s no exit¡ there¡¯s only one solution. We split up, and find it ourselves.¡±
¡°Split up?¡± echoed Vespera, a frown marring her brow. ¡°I don¡¯t think so.¡± She sighed heavily, running a hand through her black, silvery locks. ¡°Look, the last few games we played in Oakridge Town have taught us our lessons; if it¡¯s dangerous, we shouldn¡¯t go alone.¡±
¡°Besides, what if any of us gets captured?¡± Elowen added.
¡°Well¡ yeah,¡± Kael admitted reluctantly. ¡°But it¡¯s safer if we split up. That way, we can cover more ground and cover each others¡¯ weaknesses better.¡±
¡°And then we have a better chance of finding it faster,¡± Ashlan added.
Elowen stared at each of the players, searching for their approval before speaking. ¡°Alright, I¡¯ m willing to compromise, but let me make clear that we can¡¯t just run around blindly trying to look for the lantern when we really haven¡¯t explored this whole dungeon yet.¡±If you come across this story on Amazon, it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it.
Her companions nodded in unison. Even Lyra seemed less inclined to disagree.

¡°Then let¡¯s start looking,¡± Ashlan said looking at the notification. His tone held a hint of reluctance, but he wasn¡¯t going to back down.
Elowen takes a deep breath and moves forward. A tall, heavily armored player strides past her, barely glancing her way. His footsteps cause the floor to creak ominously beneath him, reminding Elowen of the pressure-sensitive traps that line the dungeon. She steps to the side, careful not to make her presence known to him. His confidence is unsettling; he clearly believes he has the upper hand.
She watches the others more carefully now. The rogue seems to be moving toward the shadows, trying to blend into the walls. The mage, whose glowing staff illuminates the area for a brief moment, suddenly stiffens as if sensing something off. Elowen realizes that even though they¡¯re all facing the same deadly game, their responses to the dungeon¡¯s challenge are different.
Suddenly, the air seemed to shift. The faintest sound¡ªa clicking¡ªechoed from the walls, and before anyone could react, the floor gave way beneath them. Ashlan barely leaped back in time, his sword scraping against the stone as he regained his footing. The sudden shock wave knocked everyone backwards, slamming them against the hard stone wall. They were trapped in the dungeon.
"This isn''t good," Kael breathed, struggling to keep his balance. His face contorted in agony as the sharp rocks dug into his skin.
Elowen pulled him closer to her, offering him whatever comfort she could. The floor was littered with hundreds of deadly spikes and jagged teeth. The room was lit by flickering torchlight, providing a dull yellow reflection that made her heart jump with anxiety. She tightened her grip around Kael''s shoulder as if he were an anchor.
"Let''s try our best to stay focused," she said firmly. Despite her words, she couldn''t quite shake off the nagging feeling that this was going to end terribly.
Their only escape route was a steep staircase made of stalagmites which stretched upwards. However, climbing it meant that each person would have to take one step at a time. It was a long way up and they¡¯d have to tread lightly lest they slip on some treacherous rock or fall to their deaths. Elowen swallowed hard as she looked up the narrow stairs. If one wrong movement caused the trap below to explode, the group would be done for. But there was no turning back. Their quest would be over if they stayed where they were.

One by one, the players started moving up the staircase with caution as they attempted to avoid the dangerous pitfalls lying dormant beneath their feet. Each step on the stairs seemed to pull the players deeper into the heart of the dungeon''s treacherous labyrinth, and the clock was always ticking. The atmosphere was thick with tension. Elowen, known for her agility and sharp instincts, was already several steps ahead of the others, her eyes fixed on the prize at the top. Behind her, ten players rushed up, each determined to claim the Firefly Lantern for themselves.
Elowen was no stranger to danger, and she had trained her entire life for moments like this. The first few stairs were smooth, the stone cold beneath their feet, but the higher they climbed, the more unpredictable the obstacles became. Every step seemed to be a test of their resolve.
But then, it happened. Elowen misjudged the angle of one of the stairs, her foot slipping slightly on the stone. A sharp pain shot up her leg as she twisted her ankle. She gasped in pain, stumbling as she tried to regain her footing, but it was too late. With a sharp cry, Elowen collapsed onto the stairs, clutching her ankle.
"Shit," she growled quietly.
¡°Are you alright?" Kael whispered, and Elowen nodded, pressing her lips together to prevent any groan from escaping."
Her breath came in shallow gasps as she looked up, watching the others speed past her. She cursed her luck, knowing how precious every second was.
¡°Come on, Elowen! Get up!¡± one of the players shouted as they passed, but she could only watch as the group continued to surge ahead.
Dax, a player known for his ruthless determination, was the first to reach her. He saw Elowen writhing in pain, but his eyes remained cold and focused on the goal ahead. The Firefly Lantern was close now, and he wasn¡¯t about to be slowed down by anyone.
"Move, Elowen!" Dax barked, his voice harsh. "The clock¡¯s ticking. We need to find the Lantern. Now!"
Without a second thought, Dax shoved Elowen aside with a brutal push, sending her sprawling. She groaned in pain, but her injury prevented her from retaliating. Dax didn¡¯t even look back as he continued to ascend the stairs with reckless abandon, eager to claim the Firefly Lantern for himself.
Elowen gritted her teeth, fighting to regain her footing. Her hands balled into fists as she struggled for control, cursing silently. Reaching for the dagger at her belt, she winced as it pressed into her flesh but pushed through the pain, focusing on the task ahead. She knew that letting fear take over would mean defeat. With determination, she gritted her teeth and forced herself to stand once more.

Time dragged on like an old clock as the players raced toward the stairs. With each passing minute, their adrenaline began to fade, replaced by exhaustion. By the time they neared the staircase, their movements had grown sluggish and slow.
¡°Elowen, are you okay?" Kael asked as he rushed down the stairs and sat near her. He looked worried as he saw her wound and the blood seeping from it on her waist. He quickly took off his shirt and wrapped it around her waist to stop the bleeding.
¡°Yeah,¡± Elowen replied, forcing a smile to her lips. She hated being vulnerable, but she knew that she couldn¡¯t afford to show weakness right now. ¡°Just a little bruised is all, I think.¡±
¡°I still feel bad,¡± Kael said apologetically. ¡°Dax shouldn''t push you like that."
It鈥檒l heal in no time
¡°It¡¯s alright. It¡¯ll heal in no time,¡± Elowen reassured him with a small smile.
¡°We don¡¯t have much time left,¡± Kael said looking at the ceiling. ¡°How much further?¡±
Elowen stood up with the help of Kael and started to move towards the stairs, but she saw they were in another room and there was only a door in the dim light. Something mysterious was written on the door, and she wanted to read the strange inscriptions, but they couldn''t use the light as per the rules. The darkness seemed to thicken around them, making the air feel heavier. Elowen strained her eyes, trying to make out the faint markings on the door.
Her heart raced as she strained to make sense of the markings. The air grew heavier with each passing second, thick with an oppressive darkness that seemed to close in around them. The rules were clear¡ªthey couldn''t use light. Yet, she had to see what was written on the door.
She took a slow, deliberate breath and closed her eyes, relying on her other senses. The faintest shift in the air¡ªcool, then warm¡ªseemed to point her toward the door. She reached out, fingers brushing the surface, feeling the deep grooves of the inscriptions. The markings were etched into the wood, rough and jagged, as if carved by something not human.
Through the delicate touch of her fingertips, the strange words began to emerge in her mind, as though her skin could sense their meaning:
"__In the silence of the void,
The web will stir, the beast will rise.
Bound by darkness, awake in fear,
The spider''s gaze will draw you near.
Beware the moonless hour,
For death comes on eightfold power.__"
The words lingered in her thoughts, their weight more palpable than ever. She could hear the faintest vibration in the air, as if the door itself was alive, holding a terrible secret that could not be seen, only felt.
The other 14 players successfully made it upstairs. At the top of the stairs, however, things were different. At the very top of the cavernous cave, which stretched across the entire floor, was a massive, gaping hole. The tunnel leading to the next level had never been visible from the ground. Dax groaned in anger as he saw nothing atop the stairs, slamming his foot on the ground with such force that it triggered something neither he nor anyone else could have foreseen. The dungeon designed with mechanisms beyond human understanding, responded to his actions. The air grew heavier, the very walls vibrating as a low hum reverberated throughout the staircase.
Dax reached into his bag, pulling out a small, artificial light. He didn¡¯t think twice about it¡ªthe light was a tool he had used many times before in dark spaces, and it would help him find his way down the stairs faster. But as the light flickered to life, it began to glow unnaturally bright.
That was the moment everything changed.

A cloud of toxic gas begins to spread through the environment, rapidly filling the air. The gas will persist for 5 minutes, and all players within the affected area will begin to suffer the following debuffs:
- Poisoned: 15% Health loss per minute
- Dizziness: -10% to movement speed
- Vision Impairment: Reduced clarity and focus
[Please be advised to follow the rules for your safety]
|
An invisible trap, hidden deep within the ancient stones, was triggered. The walls groaned as a hidden compartment opened, releasing a deadly, fast-spreading cloud of toxic gas into the room. The air thickened instantly, suffocating all who inhaled it.
Dax¡¯s breath caught in his throat as the poison filled the dungeon, turning the clear air into a choking fog. His eyes widened in panic. "What the hell?" he gasped, falling to his knees.
He could smell it now, a sickly stench that filled his lungs painfully. He could barely breathe, the toxin filling his head with dizzy disorientation. His chest tightened, constricting as he struggled to pull in air that refused to come. His vision blurred slightly, causing him to stumble backwards. He tried to fight against the effects of the gas, but found himself unable to do so; his limbs felt heavy as lead, and a wave of lethargy swept over him. His body was struggling to remain upright, refusing to accept any form of resistance. His legs gave way to the floor, leaving Dax fell on the floor as his sight began to blur even more.
¡°Help me¡!¡± Elowen coughed weakly as the poisonous mist filled her lungs.
The sound of someone running towards her pierced her ears, breaking through the cloud and helping her finally break free from its paralyzing hold. A soft hand gripped her arm, dragging her away from the toxic fumes that filled the room.
¡°Come on, Elowen! Come on open the door!¡± Kael shouted, pulling on her arm.
¡°But¡ª" she paused for a few seconds as another wave of dizziness hit her. She stumbled forward, allowing Kael to tug her away from the toxic fumes. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it.
"Get out of here first," Kael shouted frantically as he pulled her along, dashing through the murky smoke and disappearing behind a corner. Elowen coughed hard, almost losing consciousness as she struggled to keep up with Kael¡¯s pace. ¡°Just a bit more, Elowen!¡±
The two ran towards that deadly door__their only option at this point __while the poison continued to cloud Elowen¡¯s mind, her vision growing hazy as she fought against her own body. Her strength quickly drained, leaving her helpless as the poison took its toll on her.
The others, too, began to realize what was happening. A few attempted to cover their mouths, but it was too late. The poison spread quickly, the pungent fumes attacking their lungs, burning their throats, and blurring their vision. The staircase became a nightmare, filled with gasping, coughing players who stumbled blindly in search of escape.
Some players fell, crying from the excruciating pain they felt every time the poison took full effect, but most continued on, hoping to reach the exit before dying. The toxic gas took over most of their vision, leaving everyone struggling to see in the dark. They struggled to stay standing, stumbling over one another. One player tripped on the edge of the last step, dropping down into it. The rest stopped and turned to look at him, noticing his sudden fall. There was a tense pause, and then one after the other, the players began moving forward again, searching for some semblance of comfort amid the chaos. They all had to leave the dungeon now, or die trying.
Kael opened the door and dragged himself into the room, followed by Elowen. As soon as the door clicked shut behind him, another panel slid shut at the bottom. The light above went off, plunging both of them into darkness once again, save for the tiny little flame that remained glowing in front of Kael¡¯s face.

In the instant the countdown hit zero, the pressure was overwhelming. Elowen and Kael had barely a second to react.
¡°Quick, now!¡± Kael shouted, already darting to one side of the wall, his hand reaching for a Glowstone Block that shimmered with an ethereal light. The block was warm to the touch, its surface covered in intricate patterns that seemed to pulse faintly. Elowen followed suit, her fingers trembling as she grabbed the second Glowstone Block. The smooth, radiant stone felt almost alive as she sprinted to the left side of the wall. The seconds felt like an eternity as they scrambled to place the blocks in the right spots. The sound of the system¡¯s countdown echoed in their minds as they worked in tandem, adrenaline flooding their veins. Elowen glanced over her shoulder once, her heart pounding heavily as she watched a strange shadow begin to appear in the wall opposite them. It appeared to be a single large square, yet there was no discernible door anywhere nearby.
With a final push, both Glowstone Blocks slammed into place at the exact same moment.

[Time Left: 5 seconds]
|
The air was thick with tension as Elowen and Kael moved swiftly through the dungeon¡¯s shadowed corridors. The oppressive silence was shattered only by the sound of their hurried footsteps and ragged breaths. They had found the Firefly Lantern, its faint glow barely enough to illuminate their immediate surroundings. But as each second passed, their light grew less and less strong until all they had left were flickers.
¡°Kael, we don¡¯t have much time!¡± Elowen hissed, clutching the lantern tightly. She could feel the soft warmth of its light against her palm, but it was fading. A quick glance at the dimming flame told her it would be out within moments.
Kael''s eyes scanned the darkness ahead. ¡°We need to run faster. If it goes out, we¡¯ll be blind in here.¡±
The glow of the lantern flickered. The shadows in the dungeon seemed to pulse, creeping closer with each passing second. They ran down the narrow corridor, but the maze-like structure of the dungeon made it feel like they were getting nowhere. Every turn felt the same, and the light grew weaker with each step.
Elowen¡¯s pulse quickened as the flame dimmed even further. Her heart raced, and the air grew colder. The thought of being trapped in total darkness with no way to navigate sent a chill down her spine.
¡°Where is the exit?¡± she whispered urgently, her voice strained.
Kael¡¯s eyes darted from side to side, but all he could see were the same old stone walls, no indication of the exit. The lantern¡¯s glow weakened even more, now barely more than a faint ember. It was almost gone.
¡°Don¡¯t panic,¡± Kael said, though his voice lacked conviction. He grabbed her arm, pulling her toward what appeared to be a large stone door ahead. ¡°It¡¯s got to be there. Come on!¡±
Elowen¡¯s legs burned, her breath shallow from the adrenaline. The last sliver of light flickered, and she felt the world around them closing in. Then¡ªsnap¡ªthe lantern¡¯s glow completely vanished.
Darkness surrounded them, engulfing the entire dungeon. They couldn¡¯t find any signs of life. The darkness seeped into her bones, chilling her from the inside out.
"I can¡¯t... I can¡¯t see anything..." Elowen muttered as she slowly lowered herself down onto her knees. She leaned forward and placed her forehead on the cold stone floor.
There was nothing else for her to focus on. Just her and the icy feeling spreading throughout her chest. She knew the effects of the poison would pass, that the effects would wear off shortly, but she still felt sick from the effects of the poison. The lightless darkness surrounded them. Elowen couldn¡¯t make out anything in front of her. All she saw was a dense void where the hallway used to be. Darkness enveloped everything, blocking her sight of any obstacles. It was like falling endlessly. Her heart beat wildly against her chest. The world plunged into darkness. The faintest sounds became amplified in the sudden void¡ªthe soft skitter of unseen creatures, the eerie echoes of their breath. Elowen froze, her hand still gripping Kael¡¯s, when they felt someone suddenly drag both of them.
The keys... Are they really the answer?

[Quest Completed: Finding the Firefly Lantern!]
[Reward: 50 Experience Points, Firefly Lantern Item added to Inventory...]
|
Elowen felt something glowing red on her wrist, but she was too tired and injured to focus on it. It looked like a butterfly charm. She could sense it wasn¡¯t rough or cold, but smooth and wet. It wasn¡¯t the dungeon; it was the forest. This meant they were alive and had made it out. Slowly, she opened her eyes and looked around, confirming that she was definitely in the forest, safe and free.
The Orange Herald Butterfly fluttered into view, signaling the completion of her quests. Elowen gathered all her remaining courage and sat up. She turned her head around and gazed at the dark forest in amazement. It was like the entire forest had been enveloped in a halo of white. It stretched out from the horizon, giving it a mystical yet peaceful appearance. Even the forest floor was blanketed in a thin layer of frost which reflected a hazy silver glow. Elowen let out a sigh of relief, relaxing against the cool breeze. The lantern was lying near her, dim and cold, its light long extinguished. She extended her hand to touch it.
It was a stunning object, its rounded glass body shimmering like a crystal orb filled with swirling mist. Intricately woven silver vines spiraled around it, adding an ethereal beauty that made it seem almost alive. Inside the lantern, tiny, luminescent fireflies flitted about, their soft, golden light pulsating gently like a heartbeat. The glow cast mesmerizing patterns on the forest floor, creating an enchanting aura that lit up the surrounding darkness.
As Elowen drew closer, she noticed delicate silver filigree motifs resembling leaves and stars adorning the lantern''s frame, further enhancing its mystical charm. At the top, a small handle shaped like a crescent moon beckoned her to lift it. When she grasped the lantern, a faint, melodic hum filled the air, like a distant lullaby that soothed her frayed nerves. The warmth radiating from it felt like a gentle embrace, rekindling her spirit as she realized the lantern''s true purpose-it was not just a source of light, but a beacon for lost souls, guiding them home.
Slowly, the lantern vanished into the air, and she raised her head. There was no sign of any monsters lurking around, but the atmosphere still made her feel uneasy. The last thing she wanted was for it to vanish completely. Just as she started to think about returning home, she noticed movement to her right and noticed some shadowy figures appear in her peripheral vision. She turned to look around when suddenly her system activate flickering in front of her eyes.

Elowen let out a sigh as she read through the notification. Finally she got the chance to explore the unknown world. Maybe her curiosity will keep her focused for a little longer. Suddenly her gaze immediately drawn to Kael. He lay a short distance from her, his eyes closed in unconsciousness. There was something strange, a glowing yellow butterfly charm on his wrist, catching her attention. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
She tried to stand, but then a sudden thought struck her. She had been injured in the dungeon. Her heart skipped a beat as she looked down at herself, and instinctively, she untied Kael¡¯s shirt from around her waist to check her own wounds. To her surprise, she found herself perfectly fine, her body healed. How¡? She wondered, her mind racing to understand.
She quickly rose to her feet, panic setting in, and ran over to Kael. He too seemed unharmed, his chest rising and falling with steady breaths. She needed to make sure they were both safe, and Kael needed to wake up.
¡°Kael? Wake up!¡± Elowen cried, shaking him gently. His eyelashes fluttered open. ¡°Are you okay?!¡±
Kael blinked a few times before focusing his bleary vision on her. ¡°Yea¡ I think so¡ why are you shouting? What happened?¡±
¡°We¡¯re in the forest!¡± Elowen exclaimed excitedly, unable to contain her happiness.
"What about the others? Did anyone survive?" Kael asked, sitting up with great effort and stretching his arms.
Her expression soured instantly.
"No. There were no survivors. Just you two." They heard someone''s voice, and Elowen looked back to see who it was.
"Balthazar," she whispered his name, an emotion rising in her throat. He was standing near the tree, his eyes cast downward as he stared fixedly at a particular spot in front of him. Elowen followed his gaze¡ªand saw that he was staring at Kael, but she ignored it and looked up at him again, noticing that he wasn''t alone. Eamon was also standing behind him. Both Balthazar and Eamon were also wearing the glowing yellow butterfly charm on their wrists.
"What? No one survived?" Kael looked surprised, his voice tinged with disbelief.
"No," Balthazar said, his voice cold, almost emotionless.
"So, it was you who dragged us out?" Elowen''s eyes narrowed, still not entirely understanding the situation.
Balthazar turned toward Elowen and his expression softened. His gaze lingered on her, and a faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at his lips.
He nodded, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant. "Yes... it was me. I never thought I¡¯d see you here, Elowen."
Elowen''s heart skipped a beat at the mention of her name. She stared at him, a mixture of confusion and concern in her eyes. ¡°How long have you been here, Balthazar?¡±
Balthazar ran a hand through his hair, the weight of the past month weighing heavily on his features. "I don''t know... probably a month. The herbalist, she... she asked me to find the keys if I wanted to save my family from the Malice Bloom Plague." His voice faltered for a moment, and he took a deep breath, as though the mere mention of the plague was enough to bring the pain back.
Elowen¡¯s eyes softened in sympathy. ¡°So, you¡¯ve been doing this... for your family?¡±
Balthazar looked away, the weight of his secret still heavy in his heart. "It wasn¡¯t just for them, Elowen. It was for everyone. The plague... it doesn''t discriminate. I couldn¡¯t stand by and do nothing."
A silence lingered between them, thick with unspoken emotions. Kael shifted uncomfortably but remained silent, sensing the tension between the two.
Finally, Elowen broke the silence. "The keys... Are they really the answer?"
Balthazar nodded slowly, his face a mask of uncertainty. "I believe they are. But there''s more. The keys alone won¡¯t be enough. We need to stop the source... and I don¡¯t know if I can do that alone."
Elowen stepped closer, determination in her eyes. "Then you won¡¯t be alone, Balthazar. We''re in this together."
Eamon nodded, his voice steady. ¡°We¡¯ll find a way. We always do.¡±
Balthazar looked at both of them, the weight of his past lifting slightly. For the first time in a long while, he allowed himself to believe in hope. It was a dangerous road they were treading upon, one filled with dangers and uncertainties. They weren¡¯t going to get back to Ferelden unscathed. If only they had a better chance of survival then maybe they would reconsider taking this risky path.
¡°Thank you,¡± she whispered softly.
Slowly, they walked towards the other side of the forest, scanning the area and listening for any unusual sounds. They paused when they picked up a faint rustling of leaves. Turning, they looked in the direction of the sound and listened closely. Straining their ears, they heard a soft meowing from a small hole concealed within the tree bark. They stepped toward the spot and carefully peeked inside. The moment they opened their eyes, they spotted two black eyes watching them cautiously from within the opening, almost daring them to do something. The eyes slowly blinked before disappearing into the tree.

"Okay, okay," Eamon mumbled quietly before stepping inside with others. The interior of the hole was covered in thick branches, obscuring their view of anything else except for a faint reddish glow. Their brows scrunched together, trying to decipher where the faint red glow came from. They continued creeping through the tunnel, following the slight glow until it faded and they could no longer hear it. After a few moments of silence, they continued cautiously down the tunnel until they finally reached a fork in the path.
|
[Difficulty Level: SSS]
[Difficulty level increased due to the path you choose]
|
The tunnel ended abruptly, as if it had been severed from the earth itself, its path suddenly blocked by a smooth, unyielding wall of stone. The cold, damp air of the tunnel gave way to a strange stillness, the silence pressing down on everything like a weight. At the end of the passage, the stone wall, smooth yet slightly weathered by time, formed an unexpected boundary. For a moment, it seemed as if the tunnel had no purpose¡ªno reason for existing at all. Then, as their eyes adjusted to the dimness, the truth became clear: this was no simple wall.
It was the threshold to something far more ancient. They took a deep breath, held it, and then exhaled slowly before cautiously approaching the wall. Their hearts began to beat faster and faster as they drew closer, but the wall remained perfectly still, even though their heartbeat should have been pounding in their ears by now. They took one final step toward the threshold, almost there. Then, without warning, they felt their bodies being yanked forward. As the floor dropped out from under their feet, they found themselves plunging into darkness. Their screams never escaped their lips. They quickly grabbed hold of the side of the rock wall, and after a few seconds, when their vision cleared, they realized they were in a chamber¡ªa very large room.
Slowly, they took a step into the space, and the corridor expanded into a vast, circular chamber, its edges disappearing into the dark beyond. The chamber wasn''t large in the sense of being cavernous, but the air within felt impossibly vast, as if the very shape of the place had been designed to amplify the sense of isolation. The walls were perfectly round, their curvature impossibly smooth, as if carved by some unseen hand with a precision that defied nature. There were no seams, no joins¡ªonly the seamless sweep of stone that created the illusion of endlessness.
The stone walls bore ancient, faded murals¡ªnow almost imperceptible. Some resembled archaic runes, while others displayed intricate patterns that seemed to ripple with a forgotten language. Elowen whispered, barely audible, to the sensitive ear, though their meanings had long been lost. The murals told a tale of an ancient world¡ªone steeped in mysticism, solar worship, and the cosmic forces of nature. They weren''t just images; they were stories, layered with meaning, woven together like threads in an old tapestry, waiting to be interpreted.
The murals stretched across the walls, their shapes intertwining with the natural curves of the chamber. Some were bold and clear, their lines sharp and crisp, while others had begun to blur and fade, as if time itself had tried to erase them. Yet even in their worn state, they pulsed with a strange energy, as if the stone still held the memory of what was once vivid and powerful. They stepped forward and began to read them.
| The First Mural: The Creation of the World:

|
The first mural were positioned at the base of the chamber''s walls, near the floor, where the stone was still relatively intact. They depicted the Creation¡ªthe moment when the world was born, shaped by cosmic forces. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
In the center of one panel, a massive sun dominated the scene, its rays radiating outward in a burst of energy. But the sun was not just a sphere of fire; it was a personified deity, its form crowned by rays that twisted into intricate, almost organic shapes. The figure seemed to hold both power and sadness in its gaze, as though it was both the creator and the sacrificed. Beneath this radiant figure, two smaller gods¡ªone with the features of the sea, long serpentine waves curling around its body, and the other a celestial being with the delicate outline of the moon¡ªwere seen kneeling before the sun. They offered gifts to the deity: water, in the form of curling waves, and light, in the form of star-like sparks.
|
Elowen stood before the mural, her wide eyes fixed on the intricate scene as if she could see something hidden beneath its surface. Eamon noticed the intensity in her gaze and, unable to contain his curiosity, asked, "Can you read it?"
She nodded slowly, her voice soft but filled with awe. "This... this is the creation. The birth of the world itself."
Kael frowned, his eyes narrowing as he scrutinized the details. The scene seemed almost alive to him, the figures etched into the stone vibrating with energy. "It looked like the sun was alive," he said slowly, his voice filled with a mixture of wonder and wariness. "Like it was a god or something. And those other two figures¡ªthe sea and moon gods¡ªwere offering something to it. Water and light?"
Eamon moved closer, his fingers brushing against the cold stone as he tried to decipher its meaning. There was something unsettling about the image, a tension in the way the figures were arranged. "There¡¯s something strange about it, though," he murmured. "It felt like the sun... it wasn¡¯t just giving life. It seemed like it was also taking something away, like it demanded a price."
Kael nodded in agreement. "Yeah," he said thoughtfully. "The way the sun''s face looked¡ªpowerful, but sad... as if it knew there was something it had to give up, but it did it anyway. Almost like it was resigned to it." He crossed his arms over his chest, his brow furrowing as he took in the scene once more.
Elowen, who had been studying the mural intently, gave a small, knowing nod. Her voice was gentle, yet sure. "Exactly. The sun wasn¡¯t just creating. It was sacrificing too. You could see it in the way its rays were twisted, almost like they were part of the sacrifice¡ªorganic, mixed with the very essence of life. And the sea god..." She trailed off for a moment, her eyes lingering on the figure. "You could tell it was desperate. Its body formed these long, curling waves, but it was kneeling to the sun as though it was bound by some unseen force."
Kael¡¯s eyes moved to the moon god, his expression pensive. "And what about the moon? It looked so fragile. Like it was the one that held the most delicate light. Why would it offer its light here?" His voice was filled with confusion, as though trying to understand a piece of a puzzle that didn¡¯t quite fit.
Elowen took a deep breath, her fingers tracing the faint lines of the moon god¡¯s image. "The moon¡¯s offering was light, but it was so small, so faint compared to the sun. It was like it was giving all it had left to the sun, knowing it might not get anything back. The gifts¡ªthe water, the light¡ªfelt like they were offered in desperation, like they had no choice but to give." Her voice softened, the weight of her words heavy in the stillness of the room. "The rhyme beneath the mural... it warned of a price that was hidden, one that wasn¡¯t seen at first. That price might have been the reason the gods were forgotten in the end."
_"At the heart of the sun, the first spark did gleam,
In the cradle of light, where the gods once did dream.
But the gift they did give, with a price left unseen,
Now lies in the hands of the stone guardians'' scheme."_
They read the rhyme etched beneath the mural. The words seemed to echo in the air, as if the very chamber was resonating with them.
Balthazar, who had been listening quietly, finally spoke in his voice uneasy. "And what did the guardians have to do with all this? The stone guardians? They must have been part of the price too, right?"
Elowen¡¯s gaze shifted toward the stone guardians depicted in the background, her eyes narrowing as she scrutinized their presence. They stood silent, ever watchful, their stone eyes seeming to follow them. "I think so," she said, her tone darkening. "The guardians were the ones who held whatever was given¡ªwhat the gods lost, what they gave up for creation." She paused, her voice taking on a warning edge. "This room, these murals, they were warning us. It was a cycle that started with creation, but the gods¡¯ bargain¡ªthis... this ¡®price¡¯¡ªwasn''t over. It was still binding them, and it was still binding this place."
A deep silence hung between them as the weight of her words settled over the group. Kael felt a shiver creep down his spine, the air in the chamber growing heavier. Elowen''s voice grew softer, almost a whisper, but there was no mistaking the seriousness in her words. "We had to be careful."
When they studied this scene, there was a sense of harmony and balance, yet also tension. The gods offered their gifts, but there was an undertone of desperation¡ªa hint that the gift-giving was not entirely voluntary, but part of a covenant or sacrifice. It felt like a fragile balance, as though the power being shared could just as easily be taken away.
The Second Mural: The Rise of the Thalassain Kingdom
| The Second Mural: The Rise of the Thalassain Kingdom:
|
|
Higher up, as the murals ascended toward the midsection of the chamber, they began to depict the rise of the Thalassain Kingdom¡ªthe once-great civilization that had inhabited this land. These murals were far more detailed, and the transition from celestial beings to human forms was striking.
One panel showed human kings and queens standing proudly before a massive stone temple, a great sun-shaped symbol emblazoned across the entrance. The rulers were depicted in regal attire, their bodies elongated and exaggerated, emphasizing their divine status. In their hands, they held ceremonial objects¡ªone king bore a sunstone, a stone that glowed faintly in the presence of light, and a queen held a crescent-shaped mirror that reflected the celestial bodies above.
Alongside the kings and queens, priests and priestesses were shown performing rituals in the open air, their arms raised to the sky in worship of the sun. The solar imagery here was impossible to ignore¡ªsmall sun-shaped amulets adorned the figures, radiating light toward the divine forms. However, there was a marked change in the mood of these murals: where the earlier depictions of the gods had seemed harmonious, here there was a sense of imbalance. The people of Thalassa were reaching for the divine, but their attempts seemed imperfect, as though they were grasping at something beyond their reach.
One particularly striking mural showed the Thalassain high priests preparing a grand sacrifice, standing around a massive stone altar. Atop the altar was a symbol of the sun¡ªa sunstone heart, pulsing with faint energy, surrounded by a ring of ceremonial candle jars, each containing a Wickwing butterfly trapped inside. The high priests'' faces were obscured by the symbols of the sun, but their postures were reverent and solemn. This scene hinted at a darker side of the kingdom''s solar worship: a ritualistic sacrifice, performed to ensure the continued favor of the sun god, and to bind the kingdom''s prosperity to the celestial forces. There was a shadowy and mysterious energy around these rituals, as though the gods had begun to demand more in return for their blessings.
|
Kael stood in front of the mural, his eyes narrowing as he examined the intricate details of the figures. The kings and queens depicted on the stone seemed to shimmer with an unnatural quality. "These rulers..." he muttered, his voice low, "they didn¡¯t look human anymore." He stepped closer, as if trying to make sense of what he was seeing. "Their bodies, they''re so elongated... almost alien. Like something''s gone wrong."
Eamon, who had been studying the same scene, leaned in with an air of quiet contemplation. He tilted his head, squinting at the figures. "It¡¯s like they were trying to elevate themselves, reach something divine. They wanted to become like gods, but the more I look at it, the more it feels wrong. Like they were mimicking the gods, trying to copy them rather than worship them." He shook his head slightly, disturbed by the implications. "It doesn¡¯t sit right."
Balthazar pointed toward the stone temple etched into the wall. His voice was heavy, as though he was trying to connect the dots. "Look at that sun symbol on the temple. It¡¯s central to everything. Almost as if they thought the entire kingdom revolved around it. Their lives, their culture¡ªeverything was built around that symbol."If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
Elowen, who had been listening intently, finally spoke. Her voice was soft, but it carried an air of certainty, like someone who had spent years unraveling a long-forgotten mystery. "That¡¯s exactly it. This is the Thalassain Kingdom at its height, when they truly believed their rulers were gods. Look at how they¡¯ve depicted themselves. Their bodies are stretched, exaggerated, their garments almost otherworldly. Everything about them screams that they believed they were the direct representatives of the sun god. The king¡¯s sunstone wasn¡¯t just an artifact. It was a symbol¡ªa direct link between the rulers and the divine. It was said to glow faintly in the light, a constant reminder of their connection to the sun."
Kael shifted his gaze from the rulers to the priests and priestesses in the mural. A sense of unease settled over him as he traced their forms. "And those rituals? What¡¯s with the butterflies? And the altar... it looks... wrong."
Elowen¡¯s eyes lingered on the scene, her expression thoughtful, but there was something darker in her gaze now. "The rituals were part of their core belief system¡ªsolar worship. But this... this is where things began to take a darker turn. The high priests weren¡¯t just performing rituals; they were preparing for a sacrifice." She paused, as if gathering her thoughts. "They offered something precious to the sun god to ensure the kingdom¡¯s prosperity. See the sunstone heart on the altar? It wasn¡¯t just symbolic. It was powerful, almost like the very heart of the sun god itself. And the butterflies¡ªthey weren¡¯t just decoration. The Wickwing butterflies were known for their delicate nature. They symbolized life, death, transformation... and the sacrifice of something beautiful for a greater purpose."
Balthazar frowned, his gaze flicking between the altar and Elowen. His voice was tight with disbelief. "They were willing to sacrifice living creatures for the favor of their gods?"
Elowen nodded slowly, her eyes darkening with a somber understanding. "Yes. But it didn¡¯t stop there. Look closely. The faces of the priests are obscured by sun symbols. They were no longer individuals. They had become instruments of the sun''s will. They weren¡¯t human anymore, not truly. The entire scene feels oppressive, like the kingdom had surrendered itself completely to their worship. The gods weren¡¯t just offering blessings anymore¡ªthey were demanding more. And the people... the people were paying a terrible price."
Kael felt a chill run down his spine as he looked at the figures. It was as though the murals had come alive, pulling him into their dark story. He glanced at Eamon, then back at Elowen. "Do you think the people of Thalassa knew what they were paying? The price they were giving to the gods?"
Elowen exhaled deeply, her eyes searching the walls as if looking for an answer she already knew. Her voice was quieter now, almost mournful. "I¡¯m not sure. But as we move through these murals, it feels more and more like they were trapped. The rulers, the priests¡ªthey thought they were in control, that they could manipulate the gods to their will. But the more they gave, the more the gods took. It¡¯s a dangerous game, trying to bind yourself to celestial forces. Thinking you can control them. The Thalassain Kingdom believed they were elevating themselves, but in reality, they were sinking deeper and deeper into a pact they couldn¡¯t escape."
Balthazar¡¯s expression grew tense, his jaw tight. His voice trembled slightly with the weight of what they were uncovering. "And what happened when the gods took more than they gave back? When the price became too high? The kingdom was doomed, wasn¡¯t it?" He said as read the rhyme etched into the stone:
_"Rulers arose in the light''s steady glow,
The heart of the kingdom, in radiance did grow.
But in shadows they lingered, and shadows did show,
As the golems'' cold eyes began to bestow."_
The words hung in the air like a warning, their meaning deep and cryptic, as if the very stone itself carried the weight of the kingdom''s fate.
Elowen¡¯s gaze moved toward the next set of murals, her eyes dark with the knowledge of what was to come. She didn¡¯t answer immediately, but her silence spoke volumes. Finally, she whispered, her voice heavy with the burden of history. "It was inevitable. This... this was where the rot began. Right here, in this very moment. The kingdom thought they were ascending, but in truth, they were already falling."
The Third Mural: The Descent and Betrayal
| The Third Mural: The Descent and Betrayal:
|
|
As they read higher on the wall, the murals became more abstract and chaotic. The once harmonious relationship between gods and people began to fracture. The sun, depicted in earlier murals as a benevolent force, now appeared more aloof, its image distorted and twisted. In one particularly jarring panel, the sun was shown weeping, its tears falling from the heavens like burning rain, scorching the land below.
At the same time, the figures of the Thalassain rulers began to fade¡ªtheir once powerful forms diluted and fractured, their faces twisted in pain. Around the sun, the sea god rose in fury, its form swelling like an immense serpent from the depths of the ocean. The celestial moon goddess, once serene, was now depicted as a dark shadow, her pale face grim and contorted.
At the heart of this chaotic section, a striking image stood out¡ªa massive, blackened stone heart, shattered into nine pieces, its fragments scattered across the scene. The murals seemed to depict the moment of betrayal: the gods'' retreat, their withdrawal from the people of Thalassa, and the sacrificial heart that had been removed from the figure, now cast into the shadows of the chamber. The people of Thalassa, once rulers of a great kingdom, were now depicted as hollow shells, their eyes wide with terror and confusion, grasping at the emptiness left by their lost gods.
There was a palpable sense of loss in these murals¡ªthe gods had abandoned the kingdom, leaving behind a cursed and broken land. The people had given too much, and in return, they had been forsaken.
|
Eamon¡¯s gaze swept over the chaotic murals before them, his eyes widening with disbelief. "This... this is nothing like what we saw before," he murmured, taking a step back. "The sun, the gods¡ªthey look... twisted."
Kael¡¯s voice was tight, his discomfort evident. "It¡¯s like they¡¯ve turned against the people. Look at the sun¡ªit¡¯s crying. Those tears... they¡¯re burning everything below." He clenched his fists at his sides, his heart heavy with a growing sense of dread. "What happened to the relationship between the gods and the Thalassains?"
Elowen¡¯s expression darkened as she traced the images with a steady hand, her voice grim. "This... this was where it all fell apart. The gods, once benevolent and powerful, had become distant and wrathful. The sun, once the symbol of life and creation, was now weeping, its tears like fire. It¡¯s a sign of betrayal¡ªsomething went terribly wrong. The gods withdrew their favor, and the people were left to suffer the consequences. It¡¯s as if the gods had simply given up on them."
Balthazar¡¯s eyes narrowed, his jaw tense as he examined the figures. "And these rulers... they look so different now. Their faces are twisted, their forms fading. What happened to them?"Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site.
Elowen¡¯s voice softened, as though she could feel the weight of their suffering. "The rulers of Thalassa were no longer divine. They were still clinging to their power, but the connection they once had with the gods was unraveling. As the sun turned against them, they were left powerless¡ªunable to hold onto what they once were. Their faces were no longer clear, filled with pain and confusion. The gods had withdrawn, and they were left with nothing." Her words hung in the air, heavy with the loss that echoed through the room.
Eamon gestured toward the sea god and the moon goddess, his face troubled as he studied their forms. "And these gods¡ªlook at the sea god. It¡¯s massive, almost monstrous now. And the moon goddess... she¡¯s not even the same. She¡¯s a shadow of herself."
Elowen nodded slowly, her eyes darkening as she took in the destruction that had consumed the gods. "The sea god, once a symbol of calm and fluidity, had become an angry, monstrous force¡ªrising up in fury, like a serpent. The moon goddess, once serene, was now a twisted, dark figure. Their power had been corrupted, their forms shattered by the betrayal. This mural shows the breaking point¡ªthe gods turned on the people of Thalassa, and in return, the people lost their connection to everything that had once given them strength."
Kael¡¯s brow furrowed as his eyes landed on the broken heart depicted in the center of the mural. "The heart... the blackened stone heart. It¡¯s shattered into pieces. Does that mean something? What happened to it?"
Elowen¡¯s voice trembled slightly as she focused on the shattered heart, her expression pained. "That heart... it was once the core of the sun god. The very source of the power that connected the gods to the people. But now, it¡¯s broken¡ªshattered into nine pieces and scattered. It¡¯s a symbol of betrayal. The gods took their power back, tearing apart the heart, and with it, the connection to the kingdom. The people of Thalassa were left hollow, empty, without their gods. They could grasp at nothing they could ever reclaim."
Balthazar¡¯s expression hardened, a deep frustration settling in. "So, the gods abandoned them. They were left with nothing... but emptiness. And terror."
Elowen¡¯s voice was heavy with sadness, as if the weight of the kingdom¡¯s fate lay on her shoulders. "Exactly. The people gave too much. When the gods no longer had anything left to take, they abandoned them completely. The Thalassan Kingdom, once great and powerful, was left in ruins. The people were hollow¡ªlost. Their eyes were filled with fear and confusion. They had sacrificed everything, and in return... they were forsaken. This mural tells the story of that moment¡ªthe moment the gods turned their backs on the people who had once worshipped them."
Eamon¡¯s gaze shifted to the scattered pieces of the heart, his voice somber. "And now... it¡¯s like the entire kingdom was doomed. The gods are gone, and the land..." He trailed off, the silence between them thick with the truth of his words. "It¡¯s cursed."
Elowen sighed deeply, her gaze lingering on the shattered mural before them. "It was the end of an era. The gods'' withdrawal sealed their fate. The kingdom was broken. And it was only a matter of time before the darkness consumed them completely. And now, this place... it¡¯s nothing more than a grave for their lost civilization." Her voice was barely a whisper, yet the sadness in it resonated deep within the hearts of all who heard it.
Beneath this mournful scene, another rhyme was etched into the stone:
_"From heavens once bright, the gods turned away,
Their tears fell like fire, and night swallowed day.
In the wake of their loss, the golems did sway,
Their hollowed-out chests, where no hearts would lay."_
The words seemed to linger, thick with the weight of grief and regret, as if the very chamber itself mourned the collapse of the Thalassain civilization.
The Final Mural: The Silence of the Gods
|
|
The final mural, high up along the curve of the chamber, depicted the golems¡ªthose great stone figures that had once stood as embodiments of the gods. Here, the golems were shown in varying states of decay. Some were weeping stone tears, while others had cracks running through their bodies like deep scars. The central mural portrayed a golem figure, the largest of them all, with a gaping hole in its chest¡ªthe exact spot where the heart had once been placed. Around it, the other eight golems stood motionless, their hollow chests mirroring the emptiness of the central figure.
One of the final images was a broken moon¡ªfractured, its light extinguished¡ªand a sun sinking into the sea, its fiery rays dissipating as it was swallowed by the ocean. The murals ended with this chaotic, dismal scene: a world in which the gods had forsaken their creations, and the cycle of life and death had unraveled.
|
Kael¡¯s voice was quiet, almost reverent, as he gazed up at the murals, his eyes tracing the cracked figures. "These golems... they weren¡¯t like the ones we saw before. These were... broken." His words felt heavy, as if the weight of the history pressed against him, and he shifted uncomfortably, unsure whether to feel awe or sorrow.
Balthazar¡¯s eyes narrowed, a deep concern settling over him as he studied the deteriorating stone figures. "They were supposed to be the gods¡¯ guardians. Now, they were weeping, cracked... empty. What happened to them?" His voice was tinged with disbelief, struggling to comprehend how these once-mighty protectors could have become so... forsaken.
Elowen¡¯s voice was low and sorrowful as she traced the outlines of the decaying stone golems. She seemed to be speaking not just to her companions, but to the figures themselves, as if they could still hear her. "The golems were the final embodiments of the gods¡ªtheir protectors, their hands in the mortal realm. But with the gods'' abandonment of Thalassa, the golems began to decay too. Their purpose was tied to the gods'' favor. And when that favor was withdrawn, so was their strength." Her eyes softened with empathy as she continued, "They were hollow now, empty shells of their former selves. Some of them were weeping¡ªstone tears, as though they mourned the loss of their creators, and of their own purpose."
Eamon frowned, his eyes drawn to the central figure of the golems, the largest one looming over them. "This one... the largest. It had a hole right where the heart would¡¯ve been. Was that... the same heart from the murals below?"
Elowen nodded solemnly, her expression shadowed with sorrow. "Yes, that was the heart¡ªthe sunstone heart. It once powered the golems, gave them life and purpose. When the gods withdrew, that heart was torn out, shattered, and scattered. This golem, the largest one, was now empty. Its heart was gone, and with it, its soul. It was a symbol of the sun god''s final abandonment." Her voice trembled, her fingers brushing against the stone as though trying to feel the echo of the lost power. "The other golems stood in silent witness, their hollow chests reflecting that emptiness."
Balthazar¡¯s gaze darkened as he surveyed the surrounding scene. His fists clenched at his sides. "And then the final images¡ªthe moon was shattered, its light gone, and the sun was sinking into the sea. It was all falling apart."This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Elowen sighed deeply, her gaze lingering on the sinking sun, the image now etched in her mind. "Yes. The moon, once a symbol of serenity, had been fractured. The sun, once the giver of life, was now being swallowed by the ocean. It was the end of everything¡ªthe gods, their creations, the kingdom¡ªit was all unraveling. The cycle of life and death had broken. There was no more balance." She shook her head, her voice growing faint with grief. "The world was left in chaos and ruin."
Kael¡¯s voice trembled, laced with disbelief. "So this was it. The end of everything. The gods had abandoned them completely, and the golems... they¡¯d been left to crumble away."
Elowen¡¯s voice was filled with quiet grief as she lowered her eyes. "Yes. The golems were the last remnants of the gods¡¯ power in this world. But now, they were just broken statues, weeping stone tears. They could no longer protect anyone." She paused, her eyes reflecting a distant sorrow. "This mural marked the moment the gods forsook their creations, and the world fell into darkness. The people of Thalassa weren¡¯t the only ones abandoned¡ªso were their guardians."
Balthazar spoke softly, his voice heavy with the weight of what they had uncovered. "A once-great kingdom brought low. The gods¡¯ departure... it was like a curse, a slow, agonizing end for everything." He stood still for a moment, as if waiting for something to change, some sign that it wasn¡¯t all truly over. But nothing came.
Eamon shook his head, his eyes lingering on the images of the crumbling world before them. His voice was tinged with a sense of finality, as if he were speaking for all of them. "This place... it was a monument to lost hope. To a broken world." His words felt hollow, echoing the emptiness that had taken over the murals.
Elowen stood silently for a moment, her hand resting lightly against the cold stone wall, as though trying to connect with the past. "The gods¡¯ favor was gone, and the world had fallen into ruin." Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried with it the weight of the centuries that had passed. "All that remains now are the stories and the memories, trapped in these walls... like echoes of a time long past. But I didn''t understand one thing: these three murals were about the creation, rise, and fall of Thalassa, but why was this fourth mural different and hinting about golems? And why did the heart of this big golem appear in the third mural?" They all stayed silent; no one had anything to say.
The silence that followed was thick with the sadness of all they had learned, the civilization that had once stood proud now reduced to nothing but forgotten whispers.
Beneath this final mural, the last rhyme was etched into the stone:
_"The moon turned to black, and the sun to the sea,
As the golems, forsaken, stood silent and free.
The cycle was broken, and all we could see,
Were their empty stone hearts, as dark as could be."_
The words hung in the air, heavy with finality, as if the chamber itself had borne witness to the end of an era¡ªthe end of a cycle that could never be undone. The gods had withdrawn, the people had fallen, and the once-mighty golems stood as hollow monuments to a forgotten age. They took a deep breath and stepped back, taking in the full scope of the murals. The weight of their story pressed upon them: a tale of creation, sacrifice, and loss. The once-glorious civilization of Thalassa, the gods'' chosen people, had fallen into oblivion. The golems, crafted to house divine power, stood as lifeless sentinels, their once-purposed hearts long removed.
The murals seemed to cry out in a final warning¡ªa reminder of the price paid for overreaching, for trying to bind the divine too tightly to the mortal world. The images of the gods, once vibrant and full of life, now faded into emptiness. The gods had withdrawn, the people had perished, and the stone figures remained, silent and hollow, as if echoing the final, desperate plea of a kingdom that had reached too far, only to fall into darkness.

Elowen, Balthazar, Kael and Eamon__all walked further into the chamber, trying to ignore the ominous feeling that slowly built inside them. They knew it would come eventually. Suddenly, they stepped on something hidden beneath the dust-covered floor. A sharp click echoed through the silence, followed by the creaking of ancient gears stirring to life. The stone beneath their feet shifted, and the air grew heavy with the hum of long-dormant magic, awakened at last by their touch.
A low rumble reverberated through the chamber, and the walls trembled as though the entire structure had come to life. Dark carvings on the walls glowed faintly, as if reacting to the disturbance, while a low mechanical whirring began to fill the room.
With wide eyes, they took a step back, but the mechanism had already been set into motion. Something¡ªa door, a hidden passage, or perhaps a trap¡ªopened in the distance, revealing more of the long-forgotten secrets that had been sealed away for centuries. As the mechanism groaned to life, Elowen''s heart raced. The air seemed to pulse with an ancient, unseen force, and the room''s dim lighting revealed a vast chamber stretching before them, lined with dark stone and unsettling shadows. The floor beneath their feet felt strangely uneven, like it had shifted over the centuries. They instinctively stepped back, their eyes scanning the room for any sign of danger.
Suddenly, the familiar voice of the system crackled to life in front of their eyes:
|

[Warning: A wrong step could activate the ancient guardians... Proceed with caution!]

A chill ran down Elowen''s spine. The "guardians" were the last thing they wanted to face in that cursed place. The ancient texts she had studied spoke of them¡ªconstructs of stone and magic, built to protect the treasures within those ruins. But how could they avoid them? Was the warning referring to the guardians themselves¡ªor the traps? They glanced down at the floor. It was covered in a thin layer of dust, but even that thin covering couldn''t disguise the subtle irregularities in the stone. Here and there, faint symbols were etched into the surface¡ªslightly raised, ancient runes that were almost imperceptible unless they knew what to look for. They were pressure plates, designed to trigger deadly traps if disturbed.

Elowen took a cautious step forward, testing the ground beneath her. Her boots scraped softly against the uneven surface, and she froze when she heard a faint click-barely audible, but unmistakable. Her heart skipped a beat. The air seemed to grow heavier.
"So that''s how it was," she whispered to herself. "One wrong step..."
She crouched low, scanning the ground more carefully. The cracks in the stone were barely visible, and the markings-if she hadn''t known what they meant-would''ve seemed like random scratches, but now, they were a warning. She was surprised to read a language she had never learned before. She stopped there and started reading it carefully to avoid any mistakes or damage.

Suddenly, a shift in the air caught their attention. A faint hum came from the walls. There were mechanisms at work there, ancient ones, set to trigger the moment they disturbed the wrong pressure plate. Elowen''s eyes narrowed. They couldn''t risk stepping any further without testing the ground first. They reached into their satchel, pulled out a long stick they had found earlier, and carefully lowered it to the floor, nudging it toward one of the marked sections. The moment the stick touched the plate, there was a sudden whoosh¡ªand the unmistakable sound of a trap being set in motion.

[Warning: Pressure plate activated. Spike trap triggered]
|
From the ceiling, sharp metal spikes shot down like a rain of death. They pierced Elowen''s arm as if they were made of pure glass. A thin stream of blood ran down her side as another spike struck again, sending waves of agonizing agony throughout her body. She gasped and yanked the stick away just in time, the spikes missing her neck by inches. The mechanism above groaned and retreated, its deadly threat temporarily disabled. Her breath was shallow, and her pulse raced. She quickly scanned the surrounding area for another potential hazard, but there was no time to waste. There were other plates, and they were hidden well. She needed to be careful.
"One wrong move," she muttered under her breath.
But then, another sound filled the air¡ªa low, muffled hiss. Elowen''s eyes widened. There was something else, something far more insidious. She followed the sound to a nearby corner of the room, where the walls seemed darker, the shadows more oppressive. A fine mist began to rise from the cracks in the floor¡ªthick, greenish, and faintly shimmering in the dim light. The smell was strong as well, thick, acidic, and choking. It reminded her of the stench of rotting meat. She quickly covered her nose with her hand and turned her attention upward. The ceiling itself seemed to be slowly collapsing, revealing dozens upon dozens of dark, gaping maws underneath. Her breath hitched. They appeared perfectly symmetrical¡ªone at each end around the chamber. She knew what that meant¡ªthere were traps beneath the surface. And they were set to go off at any given moment. Elowen cursed under her breath. This wasn''t how she had imagined spending her first days on Earth.
"Elowen!" Balthazar''s voice rang out, panic and urgency lacing his words. "Get away from the walls! There''s something wrong with the air!" His eyes darted nervously toward the mist creeping along the floor, his grip tightening on his weapon. "If that mist touches you¡ª!"
"Elowen, move!" Kael shouted, his eyes wild with fear as he sprinted toward her. His boots slammed against the stone as he shoved aside a loose piece of debris, eyes never leaving the ceiling. "Don¡¯t wait for the rest of it! The ceiling¡ªit''s going to drop again!"
"Gods," Eamon¡¯s voice broke through next, his usual calm shattered by the gravity of the situation. His hand reached for his dagger, and his heart raced in his chest. "We have to get you out of here, now, before whatever else is waiting activates!"
Elowen turned toward them, her body trembling, blood still dripping from the deep punctures in her arm. The mist thickened. The ominous sound of something shifting in the ceiling made her stomach twist. She was running out of time.
"I¡¯m trying," she gasped, her voice hoarse. "I just¡ª I need to¡ª"
"No!" Balthazar¡¯s voice cracked, a mix of fury and helplessness as he reached the edge of the chamber. He swung his dagger to clear a path toward her, but the floor was already beginning to tremble beneath them. "You don¡¯t have time! Get to the center of the room, quickly!"
The moment he said it, the mist began to swirl faster, and Elowen felt the air grow thicker and harder to breathe. Panic surged through her, but her focus remained sharp. She took one last glance toward the ceiling, eyes scanning the dangerous maze of traps. Then, with a burst of effort, she dashed toward the center of the room, the others close behind.
"Get down!" Kael cried as something clicked, a series of grinding metal sounds shaking the room. Another spike mechanism, activated by her movement. She dived, narrowly missing the deadly rain.
"Hold on Elowen I''m coming!" Eamon called out, his voice strained as he darted forward to shield her, but the chamber was shrinking, the walls closing in. The air was thick, and every breath felt as if it might be her last.

[Warning: Poisonous gas detected. Immediate evacuation advised]

Her instincts screamed at her to move, but there was no clear way to retreat. The room was filled with traps and dangers she couldn''t see, each one more deadly than the last. If she attempted to leave the chamber right then, they would most likely die on the spot-poisoned, crushed, or worse. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a brief moment, trying to think clearly. A surge of adrenaline pushed her into motion.
"Focus, Elowen, just focus" she whispered to herself, stepping carefully around the plates. She looked up at the ceiling. Large, jagged rocks hung precariously, seemingly suspended by magic or some ancient mechanism.

Her mind raced as she plotted her next move. Every inch of the floor could be a potential death trap. But she had no choice. She needed to cross this chamber to reach the heart of the ruins. The treasure was close. Her eyes settled on a nearby wall, where the ancient symbols seemed to form a pattern. There! A faint, hidden switch was embedded in the stone near the base of the wall. If she could just reach it...
She leapt forward, landing lightly against the wall, and began moving toward the spot. As she crept closer, the pattern on the stone began to blur and twist before her eyes, like water-color splashes in a pool. In her haste to find the lever, she missed an important detail. Another trap.

Elowen moved toward the switch, being as light-footed as possible. Each step felt like a gamble, each breath a prayer. The faint symbols on the ground glimmered under her feet as she moved, and she held her breath as the floor groaned softly beneath her weight. One false step, and all hell would break loose-she might as well have stepped directly onto acid.
At last, she reached the wall, where she pressed her ear against the stone near the switch, listening intently for any sounds coming from behind. A moment passed, and the symbol on the floor continued to shimmer.
Her fingers brushed the switch, and-
The ground trembled....
Then... the noise started....
An ominous creaking echoed around the chamber. The stone shuddered and gave way, crumbling inward until only dust remained. There was no turning back. They jumped through the gap, their hands gripping tightly around the edge of the hole in the ceiling, barely holding themselves steady as they fell into the void below. Their entire world disappeared into darkness.
Below the broken rock ceiling, they felt their descent slowing; the tunnel was growing steadily narrower, becoming more and more claustrophobic as they plummeted downward. After a few moments, the tunnel abruptly opened up into an endless abyss. It stretched out before them, empty and cold. An endless expanse of darkness. No light shone anywhere; every direction seemed identical. Only the occasional faint outline of a distant peak broke the monotony. There was no sign of life anywhere.
A chill went down their spine. What should they do? They weren''t equipped with any sort of light, except the faint glow of Moonveil butterfly. They would never make it far enough in this condition. And even if they managed to reach a safe distance away from here, they still didn''t know how long the traps would last. Perhaps they would be waiting for them when they returned...

Elowen exhaled slowly, wiping the sweat from her brow. She had survived. For now.
But she knew better than to let her guard down. There was more ahead-and more traps yet to face.
