Chapter 1: New Pages, Unwritten Paths
Welcome to Virelia¡ªa land where innovation and tradition coexist in dynamic harmony. Spanning verdant meadows and dense forests, shimmering metropolises and quiet hamlets, this region pulses with life, ambition, and dreams. Here, Pok¨¦mon battles are more than contests of strength; they are the beating heart of its culture, a shared language that transcends backgrounds and unites its people.
Yet beneath the surface, the region is not without conflict. Whispers of Team Eclipse stir unease, their influence creeping into even the most tranquil corners. From wild Pok¨¦mon becoming erratic to artifacts disappearing from ancient ruins, their shadow grows darker by the day. Virelia¡¯s Gym Leaders and League officials rally to preserve order, but cracks in the foundation widen. As the region looks toward its League Circuit, hope and uncertainty intertwine, setting the stage for both greatness and despair.
In Celestia City, the heart of the Virelia League, the Virelia Summit approaches its climax. Under the glow of Aurora Plaza¡¯s celestial arches, thousands of spectators watch with bated breath as Leonard Hartfield¡¯s Hydreigon unleashes its devastating Tri-Attack. The battlefield crackles with raw energy, the sheer power of the attack shattering Gavin Noir¡¯s Zoroark¡¯s illusion. Shadowclaw collapses, its crimson mane streaked with dirt, and the crowd erupts in deafening cheers.
"Leonard Hartfield¡¯s Hydreigon roars triumphant, cementing yet another commanding victory! Gavin Noir, the enigmatic Ghost- and Dark-type specialist, has finally met his match,¡± the announcers proclaim.
For those in the stands and across Virelia, the battle is more than just entertainment¡ªit is inspiration, a testament to the heights Trainers can reach. For aspiring competitors, it is both a dream and a distant horizon.
As the arena lights dim and the battle concludes, Celestia City itself seems to glow brighter, a beacon of Virelia¡¯s enduring spirit.
Far to the east, Lumora City buzzes with life. Known as the technological and cultural heart of Virelia, it is a city of contrasts. The towering skyscrapers of the Neon District shimmer with vibrant lights, their displays advertising everything from battle gear to limited-edition Pok¨¦ Balls. Nearby, the Glow Dome hosts dazzling battles and performances, its dynamic terrains drawing both seasoned Trainers and eager spectators.
Yet, amidst this cutting-edge modernity, whispers of the past linger. The cobblestone streets of Starlight Heights wind between quaint apartments and communal parks, where families and Pok¨¦mon play beneath gas lanterns. The neighborhood offers a quiet retreat from the chaos of downtown, but even here, the hum of Lumora¡¯s innovation is never far away.
The van rumbled to a stop in front of the aged brick building, its engine giving a wheezy protest before falling silent. Isabelle stared out the window, clutching Azurill¡¯s Pok¨¦ Ball in her lap. The apartment building loomed before her like a judgmental teacher, silently assessing her worth and finding her lacking.
The building wasn¡¯t exactly falling apart, but it wasn¡¯t winning any beauty contests either. The ivy creeping up its sides gave it an air of tired dignity, like an old man who still wears a suit even though he¡¯s retired. A few kids chased each other down the cobblestone street, their laughter echoing off the weathered walls. Pok¨¦mon lounged on stoops or darted between feet, their owners chatting animatedly about something Isabelle didn¡¯t care enough to eavesdrop on.
¡°Well,¡± ¨¦mile said, grinning as he hopped out of the driver¡¯s seat, ¡°here we are!¡±
¡°Yup,¡± Isabelle muttered to herself, gripping Azurill¡¯s Pok¨¦ Ball a little tighter. ¡°The fresh hellscape where my hopes and dreams go to die.¡± She climbed out of the van, squinting against the setting sun. The sky was painted in warm hues, the glow casting a soft light over the neighborhood. Great. Even the sun is trying to romanticize this moment.
Azzy popped out of her Pok¨¦ Ball in a flash of light, chirping happily and bouncing on her tail like this was the best day of her life. Isabelle crouched down, scooping the little Pok¨¦mon into her arms.
¡°At least one of us is excited,¡± Isabelle muttered, nuzzling her partner. Azzy squeaked in response, her stubby arms flailing with joy.
¨¦mile heaved a box out of the back of the van, his expression annoyingly cheerful for someone who¡¯d just spent hours on the road. ¡°What do you think, Izzy? Starlight Heights isn¡¯t so bad, huh?¡±
Isabelle glanced at the building again. ¡°It¡¯s fine,¡± she said aloud, but her internal monologue was already running wild. Yeah, it¡¯s fine. Like instant coffee is fine. Like wearing socks with holes in them is fine. Like dating someone because you¡¯re bored is fine.
She looked down the street. A bakery emitted the warm smell of fresh bread, and a vintage-style lamppost flickered to life, casting a soft glow over the cobblestones. A woman walked by with a Meowth perched on her shoulder, the Pok¨¦mon swishing its tail like it owned the block.
¡°Fine,¡± Isabelle muttered again, though this time with a little less venom. Azzy wriggled out of her arms and bounced after ¨¦mile, who was already halfway to the door with the box.
¡°Come on, Izzy!¡± ¨¦mile called over his shoulder.
She sighed and followed, dragging her feet like a kid being marched to the principal¡¯s office. As they entered the building, the smell of wood polish and faint lavender hit her. The narrow hallway was lined with old but sturdy furniture, and the walls were decorated with framed photos of landmarks from around Lumora City.
¡°This place has character,¡± ¨¦mile said, stopping to admire a painting of the Glow Dome.
¡°Character is just a polite way of saying old,¡± Isabelle quipped, earning a chuckle from her dad. She didn¡¯t hate it, though. There was something comforting about the lived-in feel of the place, even if it was as far removed from Verdantia¡¯s open fields as a Wailord was from being subtle.
They reached their new apartment on the third floor. ¨¦mile fumbled with the keys before pushing the door open, revealing a modest space with cream-colored walls and hardwood floors. The furniture had already been delivered, scattered around the living room like someone had been playing Tetris and given up halfway through.
Azzy wasted no time, bounding into the room and jumping onto the couch, her tail thwacking against the cushions. Isabelle set down her bag and took a tentative step inside.
¡°Home sweet home,¡± ¨¦mile announced, spreading his arms wide.
Isabelle raised an eyebrow. ¡°Sweet? It¡¯s got potential, sure, but let¡¯s not lie to ourselves. This place screams, ¡®I just got out of a bad relationship and needed a fresh start.¡¯¡±
¨¦mile laughed, patting her on the shoulder. ¡°You¡¯ve got jokes, kid. But give it a week¡ªyou¡¯ll be calling this place home.¡±
If by ¡®home¡¯ you mean the scene of my inevitable mental breakdown, Isabelle thought, though she didn¡¯t say it out loud. Instead, she wandered over to the window, peering out at the view.
Starlight Heights stretched out before her, a mix of cobblestone streets and cozy buildings with the Neon District¡¯s faint glow on the horizon. It was... charming, in a way. Not Verdantia, but not bad.
Azzy chirped from the couch, wagging her tail like she owned the place. Isabelle turned and smiled. ¡°Alright, Azzy, you win. Let¡¯s give this place a shot.¡±
Her dad grinned and handed her a box. ¡°That¡¯s the spirit. Now, let¡¯s unpack before your optimism runs out.¡±
Too late, Isabelle thought, hefting the box and heading for her room. If karma were real, I¡¯d be unpacking into a luxury penthouse right now. Instead, I get this charming ¡®fixer-upper¡¯ and a dad who thinks optimism is contagious.
Azzy bounced after her, chirping happily, and Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but smile. At least she wasn¡¯t doing this alone.
Isabelle set the last box down in her room with a dramatic sigh, brushing hair out of her face and surveying the chaos. Boxes were stacked against the walls, their labels scrawled in her dad¡¯s messy handwriting. The bedframe was lopsided, and the mattress perched on it looked like it was questioning its life choices.
¡°Well, Azzy,¡± Isabelle said, planting her hands on her hips, ¡°it¡¯s official. We¡¯ve moved in. And by ¡®moved in,¡¯ I mean we¡¯re surrounded by boxes and disappointment.¡±
¡°Bloop!¡± Azzy chirped, bouncing on the bed as if to say, This is fine.
¡°Glad you¡¯re keeping the bar low,¡± Isabelle muttered, prying open the nearest box. Inside were random books, a stuffed Psyduck she hadn¡¯t outgrown yet, and¡ªthank Arceus¡ªher laptop.
She pulled the dusty old thing out and set it on her desk. The sticker-covered casing barely held itself together, like a Pok¨¦mon holding on with 1 HP. ¡°Alright, old friend,¡± she said, flipping it open. ¡°Don¡¯t fail me now.¡±
As the ancient device wheezed to life, Isabelle dug through the box again, pulling out a tangled mess of wires and her tiny Bluetooth speaker. She plugged it in and placed it on her desk.
Azzy tilted her head at the screen, hopping closer. Isabelle grinned. ¡°You¡¯re about to see real quality content,¡± she told her Pok¨¦mon.
She clicked her bookmarked tab and pulled up BraixenVivi¡¯s live stream, a chaotic mix of battle replays, training advice, and the occasional unhinged rant about how Ground-types are ¡°just misunderstood.¡± The camera showed Vivi herself. Her sharp features were framed by her signature hood styled after a Braixen, and her cheery demeanor burst through the screen like an over-caffeinated Joltik.
¡°Hey, Trainers and future champions!¡± Vivi greeted, waving enthusiastically at the camera. ¡°Welcome back to the Flamecast! Today we¡¯re talking strategy, drama, and of course, that epic showdown between Leonard Hartfield and Gavin Noir. Spoiler alert: it was everything I wanted and more¡ªunless you¡¯re a Noir fan, in which case... awkward.¡±
Isabelle chuckled as she unpacked. ¡°See, Azzy? This is what peak performance looks like. Or at least, peak fake-it-till-you-make-it.¡±
Azzy bounced approvingly, her tail wagging as the stream transitioned into a replay of the battle. The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
¡°So let¡¯s talk Hydreigon, everyone,¡± Vivi continued, pulling up a slow-motion clip of Hartfield¡¯s Hydreigon dodging Zoroark¡¯s Dark Pulse. ¡°Three heads, three times the trouble, and apparently, three times the dodge rate. Seriously, look at this guy¡ªhe¡¯s like, ¡®Miss me with that weak energy.¡¯ And the synergy with Infernape? Absolute chef¡¯s kiss. Noir didn¡¯t stand a chance.¡±
Isabelle nodded along as she unpacked her books, placing them haphazardly on a shelf. ¡°Yeah, because everyone has a Hydreigon and Infernape just lying around,¡± she said, rolling her eyes.
¡°Bloop!¡± Azzy chirped, mimicking a nod.
¡°Right?¡± Isabelle said, pointing at her Pok¨¦mon. ¡°We¡¯d be unstoppable if we had one of those. Not that we¡¯d ever make it past the first gym, but still.¡±
Vivi was in full swing now, switching to an analysis of Noir¡¯s Zoroark. ¡°And let¡¯s not forget Shadowclaw¡ªabsolute legend. Those illusions? A work of art. But let¡¯s be real, illusions can¡¯t win battles alone, and Hartfield was out for blood. Hydreigon doesn¡¯t play nice.¡±
As the stream played on, Isabelle pulled out a small mirror from another box and propped it on her desk. She gave herself a once-over, grimacing at the sight of her messy hair and the smudge of dirt on her cheek.
¡°Okay, Azzy,¡± she said, placing her Pok¨¦mon on the desk. ¡°Moment of truth. Let¡¯s practice our victory pose. You know, for when we eventually win something¡ªmaybe a raffle or a free coffee.¡±
She stood in front of the mirror, trying to mimic Vivi¡¯s enthusiasm. ¡°Alright, Trainers!¡± she declared, holding an imaginary Pok¨¦ Ball high. ¡°That¡¯s how it¡¯s done! Victory is ours!¡±
Azzy squeaked and raised her tail like a tiny cheerleader.
Isabelle froze, catching sight of herself in the mirror. Her pose looked less ¡°future champion¡± and more ¡°awkward teenager cosplaying badly.¡± Her internal monologue didn¡¯t hold back. Wow. Look at you. That¡¯s definitely not cringy or anything. Maybe just go back to blending into the background.
She sighed, dropping her arms. ¡°This needs work,¡± she muttered, sitting back down as Vivi¡¯s stream wrapped up.
¡°Alright, folks, that¡¯s it for today!¡± Vivi said with a bright smile. She struck a pose, holding up her fingers in a V-shape. ¡°Remember: Train hard, stay lit, and keep those embers burning bright! Vivi out!¡±
Isabelle mimicked the pose half-heartedly, glancing at Azzy. ¡°Stay lit?¡± she said, raising an eyebrow. ¡°We¡¯re barely smoldering over here.¡±
Before Azzy could respond with her usual chirp, ¨¦mile¡¯s voice echoed down the hall. ¡°Izzy! Dinner¡¯s ready!¡±
The smell of roasted vegetables and spices greeted Isabelle as she entered the kitchen. ¨¦mile was already seated, serving up plates of stir-fry. Azzy hopped onto a stool, her tiny nose twitching at the enticing aroma.
¡°Didn¡¯t take you long to make yourself at home,¡± ¨¦mile said with a grin, gesturing at Azzy.
¡°She¡¯s adaptable,¡± Isabelle replied, sitting down. ¡°Unlike me, who¡¯s still debating whether this whole city thing is a bad dream.¡±
¨¦mile chuckled. ¡°Give it time, Izzy. Lumora¡¯s got a lot to offer. You just have to be open to it.¡±
As they ate, ¨¦mile talked about his new job at VireTech, his excitement palpable. ¡°The team¡¯s incredible,¡± he said. ¡°We¡¯re working on some groundbreaking tech¡ªlike integrating Pok¨¦mon abilities into renewable energy systems. It¡¯s the kind of work that could change lives.¡±
Isabelle nodded, chewing thoughtfully. She admired her dad¡¯s enthusiasm, even if it felt a million miles away from her own uncertain path.
After dinner, ¨¦mile leaned back in his chair, giving her a thoughtful look. ¡°Izzy,¡± he said, reaching into his pocket, ¡°I know this move hasn¡¯t been easy for you. But I wanted to give you something¡ªa little encouragement.¡±
He pulled out a sleek, compact device and slid it across the table. Isabelle¡¯s eyes widened as she picked it up.
¡°A VireBand?¡± she exclaimed. ¡°Dad, these are insane! You didn¡¯t have to¡ª¡±
¨¦mile held up a hand. ¡°Consider it a late birthday gift. And maybe a nudge to step out of your comfort zone.¡±
She turned the device over in her hands, marveling at its lightweight design and sleek interface. Azzy bounced excitedly on the table, clearly approving.
¡°Thanks, Dad,¡± Isabelle said softly, a small smile tugging at her lips. ¡°This is¡ really cool.¡±
¨¦mile leaned back in his chair, his expression softening as he watched Isabelle examine the VireBand. Azzy hopped excitedly on the table, squeaking her approval as the device''s sleek surface caught the light. Isabelle turned it over in her hands, the weight of her dad''s gesture settling in.
¡°Thanks, Dad. This is¡ really cool,¡± she said quietly, a small, genuine smile tugging at her lips.
¨¦mile returned her smile, his tone growing more serious. ¡°Izzy, I¡¯ve been thinking¡ this move to Lumora was a big change for both of us. I know it hasn¡¯t been easy, especially for you. But I don¡¯t want you to feel like you have to stay cooped up here like you did in Verdantia.¡±
Isabelle shifted uncomfortably in her chair. She had spent more time in Verdantia¡¯s fields reading books than chasing adventure. Moving to Lumora was supposed to be a fresh start, but stepping outside her comfort zone still felt daunting. ¡°It¡¯s not that I want to hide,¡± she said, glancing at Azzy. ¡°It¡¯s just¡ everything¡¯s so much bigger here. And louder. And¡ harder.¡±
¨¦mile nodded, his gaze thoughtful. ¡°I get that. Lumora can be overwhelming, but it¡¯s also full of opportunities. The League Circuit starts soon. If you wanted to, you could register as a Trainer, start your journey. Meet Professor Arden. This city¡¯s a stepping stone to the whole region, Izzy. There¡¯s a lot out there waiting for you.¡±
The idea sent Isabelle¡¯s stomach flipping. ¡°But¡ what if I¡¯m not ready?¡± she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. ¡°I mean, Pok¨¦mon journeys sound amazing, but they¡¯re dangerous too, aren¡¯t they? You hear stories¡ªpeople getting hurt, or worse.¡±
Her dad¡¯s expression grew serious, and he nodded. ¡°You¡¯re not wrong. Pok¨¦mon journeys can be dangerous, especially for unprepared Trainers. Wild Pok¨¦mon can be unpredictable, and the wilderness isn¡¯t always kind. That¡¯s why it¡¯s important to take it seriously. But the League has made strides to ensure Trainers are equipped and safe. You¡¯ve always been cautious, Izzy. That¡¯s a good thing. I think you¡¯d be just fine.¡±
Isabelle bit her lip, her eyes flicking to Azzy, who tilted her head in encouragement. She turned the VireBand over in her hands again, the smooth surface cool against her fingers. The idea of stepping outside, into the sprawling city and beyond, made her chest tighten. But something about it¡ªsomething about the possibility¡ªstirred a faint excitement deep inside her.
¡°I¡¯ll¡ think about it,¡± she murmured, a flicker of uncertainty still in her voice.
¨¦mile smiled warmly. ¡°That¡¯s all I¡¯m asking. No pressure. For now, though,¡± he said, his tone lightening, ¡°you¡¯ve got school tomorrow. That¡¯s a good first step. Get out there, meet some people.¡±
¡°School,¡± Isabelle repeated, her voice dripping with mock enthusiasm. ¡°Can¡¯t wait to see what horrors await me there.¡±
Her internal monologue kicked in, full force. The only thing scarier than a pop quiz is the teacher from math class wielding a ruler like it¡¯s a sword. High school is just a sitcom where every season introduces worse villains¡ªfinals, group projects, and whoever decided morning assembly was a good idea. At least in Pok¨¦mon battles, the chaos is contained to one arena.
¨¦mile chuckled, clearly unaware of her mental tirade. ¡°You¡¯ll do fine, Izzy. Just don¡¯t overthink it.¡±
¡°Overthinking is my default setting,¡± Isabelle replied, pushing back from the table. She gave her dad a lopsided smile before standing. ¡°Thanks for dinner. And the VireBand. I¡¯ll¡ try to figure out how to use it without accidentally deleting my trainer profile or something.¡±
Azzy chirped and bounced after her as she headed back to her room, the little Pok¨¦mon¡¯s tail wagging energetically.
Back in her room, Isabelle closed the door with a soft click and exhaled. ¡°Alright, Azzy,¡± she said, looking at the little Azurill bouncing energetically on her tail. ¡°It¡¯s just you, me, and this sci-fi wonder Dad handed over. Let¡¯s see what we¡¯re working with.¡±
She sat cross-legged on her bed, holding the sleek VireBand in her hands. It lit up with a faint, futuristic hum as the interface came to life. A glowing logo of the League sparkled on the screen before fading into a simple menu. Isabelle tilted her head, her finger hovering uncertainly over the first button.
¡°Alright, let¡¯s see,¡± she muttered. ¡°First step: figure out how to change the default Trainer name from ¡®User_001.¡¯ Because nothing screams ¡®I have my life together¡¯ like being called ¡®User_001.¡¯¡± She glanced at Azzy. ¡°Second step: don¡¯t accidentally sign up for the League before I¡¯m ready. Third step: try not to panic about step two.¡±
Azzy tilted her head in that adorable way she always did, her round eyes blinking with pure innocence. Isabelle sighed. ¡°Don¡¯t give me that look. You know as well as I do that we¡¯re not ready for the big leagues. Heck, we¡¯re not even ready for the medium-sized leagues. We¡¯re, like, the tiny kiddie pool leagues at best.¡±
Azurill chirped indignantly and launched herself onto Isabelle¡¯s lap with a surprising amount of force for a Pok¨¦mon the size of a loaf of bread. The sudden impact almost made Isabelle drop the VireBand.
¡°Okay, okay!¡± Isabelle laughed, catching the device just in time. ¡°Fine, maybe we¡¯re slightly above kiddie pool level. But let¡¯s not get carried away. You still think Bubble Beam is a war crime when it doesn¡¯t work.¡±
Azzy let out a triumphant squeak, clearly satisfied, and plopped down in a happy little ball. Isabelle turned her attention back to the VireBand, navigating its sleek interface. The menu options were simple but polished: Map, Pok¨¦mon Stats, Trainer Profile, and Communication.
She selected ¡°Trainer Profile,¡± and a blank page appeared with the words User_001 glowing at the top. Isabelle groaned. ¡°Ugh, they really went all out with creativity here. Might as well call me ¡®Generic Trainer Alpha Beta.¡¯¡±
Typing on the touchscreen, she carefully entered her name. Isabelle (and Azzy!) appeared on the profile. ¡°Much better,¡± she said, glancing at Azzy. ¡°Gotta make sure you¡¯re included. Can¡¯t have people thinking I¡¯m doing all the heavy lifting.¡±
Azurill gave an approving squeak, bouncing happily on her tail. Isabelle smiled. ¡°Okay, next step¡ªpicking an icon. What screams ¡®we¡¯re low-key disasters but still lovable¡¯?¡±
After cycling through a variety of icons¡ªPok¨¦ Balls, elemental symbols, a generic Pikachu¡ªshe finally settled on an image of a slightly derpy-looking Magikarp. ¡°Perfect,¡± she said with satisfaction. ¡°Because if that flopping fish can eventually become a Gyarados, maybe we¡¯ve got a chance too.¡±
Azzy didn¡¯t seem to share the sentiment, pouting adorably at the screen. Isabelle laughed. ¡°Hey, don¡¯t knock the Magikarp. It¡¯s the underdog story of the century.¡±
With the VireBand customized to her liking (or as much as she could muster without breaking into a cold sweat), Isabelle set it aside and began her nightly ritual. She rummaged through her unpacked boxes, pulling out toiletries and pajamas.
The bathroom mirror reflected her slightly frazzled appearance. ¡°Great,¡± she muttered. ¡°New city, new school, same dark circles under my eyes. At least I¡¯m consistent.¡±
She turned on the faucet, splashing her face with water that was either lukewarm or just mocking her for not waiting long enough. After brushing her teeth, she pulled out her skincare products, lining them up on the counter. ¡°Alright, Azzy,¡± she called out to the little Pok¨¦mon perched on the sink. ¡°Tonight, we¡¯re going full self-care. Because if I have to face a high school tomorrow, I¡¯m doing it with glowing skin, even if my social life combusts on impact.¡±
Azurill chirped enthusiastically, as if endorsing the plan.
Isabelle worked through her routine with the precision of someone preparing for battle. Cleanser, toner, moisturizer¡ªall applied with the seriousness of a Gym Leader assembling their dream team. ¡°You know,¡± she mused aloud, ¡°if high school had a ¡®Most Likely to Overthink Everything¡¯ award, I¡¯d win. No contest. Probably by unanimous vote.¡±
Azzy hopped onto the counter, watching her intently. Isabelle dabbed a little moisturizer on Azzy¡¯s tiny nose, earning a delighted squeak. ¡°There you go, superstar. Now we¡¯re both glowing.¡±
Back in her room, Isabelle changed into her pajamas¡ªan old but comfy T-shirt with a faded image of an Alolan Raichu¡ªand flopped onto her bed. Azzy curled up beside her, letting out a contented sigh.
Just as Isabelle was reaching for her VireBand to set an alarm, ¨¦mile¡¯s voice called from the hallway. ¡°Izzy! Don¡¯t forget to set your alarm. School starts early tomorrow!¡±
¡°Thanks, Dad,¡± she called back, dragging out the words with exaggerated enthusiasm. ¡°I¡¯ll be sure to wake up bright and early so I can experience the magic of teenage awkwardness in a brand-new location.¡±
Her internal monologue kicked in immediately. School. The sacred institution where you¡¯re judged for everything from your shoes to your breathing volume. High school is like a never-ending Pok¨¦mon battle, except instead of trainers, you¡¯re stuck with Karen from math class and her infamous ruler of doom.
She set the alarm on her VireBand, its soft chime confirming the time. Azzy nudged her hand, chirping softly. Isabelle sighed and patted her partner¡¯s head. ¡°Alright, Azzy. We¡¯ve got a big day tomorrow. Time to sleep and dream about not tripping in front of a crowd of strangers.¡±
As the city lights of Lumora glowed faintly through her window, Isabelle curled up under her blanket, Azzy snuggled beside her. For all her sarcasm and anxiety, there was a flicker of hope in her chest¡ªsmall but steady. Maybe, just maybe, this new chapter wouldn¡¯t be as terrifying as it seemed.
Maybe, she thought as sleep crept in, this was where the adventure began.
Chapter 2: Morning Rush
The persistent beeping of the VireBand yanked Isabelle out of a deep sleep, its sound far too cheery for such an early hour.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The sharp, rhythmic chirp of the VireBand cut through the haze of Isabelle¡¯s dreams like a Hyper Beam to the face. Groaning, she rolled over, burying her head under the pillow. The alarm didn¡¯t care. It kept going, persistent and merciless.
¡°Alright, alright, I get it,¡± she grumbled, fumbling to shut it off. Her hand found the VireBand on the nightstand, and she tapped at the screen blindly until the noise blessedly stopped. ¡°First day in a new city, and I¡¯m already being bullied by technology.¡±
Azzy¡ªMissy when she was feeling particularly mischievous¡ªchirped from the foot of the bed, bouncing lightly on her tail. Isabelle peeked out from under her pillow to see the little Azurill wagging her tail energetically, as if to say, Come on, sleepyhead, let¡¯s go!
¡°Morning, Missy,¡± Isabelle muttered, sitting up and stretching. ¡°You¡¯re chipper as always. Meanwhile, I¡¯m over here questioning my life choices.¡±
Azzy hopped closer, nuzzling against her arm. Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but smile. ¡°Alright, fine. Let¡¯s do this.¡±
She swung her legs over the side of the bed, the hardwood floor cool against her feet. Her room was still a semi-organized chaos of boxes, but at least her desk and mirror were clear. Isabelle grabbed her brush and ran it through her hair, glancing at the mirror with a skeptical eye. ¡°Good enough,¡± she decided, tying her hair into a loose ponytail.
Her morning routine unfolded with a mix of grogginess and determination. Splashing cold water on her face jolted her awake, and she meticulously went through her skincare steps¡ªcleanser, toner, moisturizer¡ªbecause if she was going to face a day full of strangers, she might as well have glowing skin.
¡°Today¡¯s the day, Missy,¡± she said, brushing her teeth with one hand while Azzy watched from the sink. ¡°We¡¯re going to be on time, look semi-presentable, and not trip over our own feet. Aim high, right?¡±
Azzy squeaked encouragingly, bouncing up and down on the counter.
She glanced at the clock on her VireBand. ¡°Okay, twenty minutes to breakfast. Let¡¯s pick up the pace.¡±
Isabelle turned to the uniform hanging neatly on her closet door, sent ahead of her move to Lumora. The pleated skirt and blazer weren¡¯t her usual style¡ªVerdantia¡¯s schools hadn¡¯t been quite so formal¡ªbut the colors were nice: navy with accents of light blue and silver. She pulled it on, smoothing out the fabric as Azzy watched intently.
¡°What do you think, Missy? Am I giving ¡®responsible student¡¯ vibes, or do I look like someone playing dress-up?¡±
Azzy tilted her head, then chirped approvingly.
¡°I¡¯ll take that as a win,¡± Isabelle said, grabbing her socks and shoes.
By the time she made it to the kitchen, the smell of sizzling eggs and toasted bread filled the air. ¨¦mile was at the stove, humming softly as he flipped something in a pan. Isabelle¡¯s stomach growled in response.
¡°Morning, Dad,¡± she said, sitting down at the small kitchen table. Azzy hopped onto a stool beside her, her nose twitching at the aroma.
¡°Good morning, Izzy,¡± ¨¦mile replied, his tone warm and cheerful. ¡°How¡¯d you sleep?¡±
¡°Like a rock until my VireBand decided to audition as a noise machine,¡± she said, yawning.
He laughed, setting a plate in front of her. Scrambled eggs, toast, and a side of sliced berries. Simple but comforting. ¡°That means it worked. Can¡¯t have you late on your first day.¡±
Isabelle rolled her eyes but smiled. ¡°Thanks for breakfast.¡±
As they ate, ¨¦mile chatted about his plans for the day at VireTech, his excitement evident. ¡°We¡¯re testing a new prototype for sustainable energy grids using Electric-type Pok¨¦mon,¡± he said, gesturing animatedly. ¡°If it works, it could revolutionize how we power cities.¡±The author''s content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
¡°That¡¯s pretty cool,¡± Isabelle admitted, taking a bite of her toast. ¡°Do you actually get to work with the Pok¨¦mon?¡±
¡°Sometimes,¡± ¨¦mile said, smiling. ¡°Though I leave most of the handling to the experts. I¡¯m more of the ¡®make sure it doesn¡¯t blow up¡¯ guy.¡±
Isabelle laughed. ¡°Good to know Lumora¡¯s safety is in your hands.¡±
They fell into an easy rhythm, the kind of warm, familiar routine that made Isabelle¡¯s new surroundings feel a little less intimidating. The kitchen was small but cozy, the light from the window casting a soft glow over the table. Azzy nibbled on a berry ¨¦mile had set aside for her, chirping happily.
¡°Alright,¡± ¨¦mile said as he finished his coffee, ¡°you ready for today?¡±
Isabelle hesitated, her fork hovering over her plate. ¡°I guess,¡± she said. ¡°It¡¯s just school, right? What¡¯s the worst that could happen?¡±
Her internal monologue wasn¡¯t as optimistic. Oh, I don¡¯t know. Getting lost. Saying something weird. Tripping in front of everyone. Becoming the next meme sensation. The usual.
¡°You¡¯ll be fine, Izzy,¡± ¨¦mile said, as if reading her mind. ¡°Just be yourself. And if that doesn¡¯t work, remember: confidence is key. Even if you have to fake it.¡±
¡°Fake it till you make it,¡± Isabelle echoed, standing up and grabbing her bag. ¡°Got it.¡±
She bent down to pick up Azzy, who squeaked in protest. ¡°Sorry, Missy, but you¡¯re staying here today. School¡¯s a human-only adventure.¡±
Azzy pouted but didn¡¯t resist as Isabelle placed her gently on the couch. ¡°I¡¯ll be back before you know it,¡± Isabelle promised, scratching behind her Pok¨¦mon¡¯s ears. ¡°Hold down the fort, okay?¡±
Azzy chirped reluctantly, settling into the cushions as Isabelle grabbed her things and headed for the door. ¨¦mile handed her a lunchbox with a smile. ¡°Have a great day, Izzy. And remember¡ªyou¡¯ve got this.¡±
After breakfast, Isabelle slung her bag over her shoulder and stepped outside, the crisp morning air tinged with the faint hum of Lumora City waking up. ¨¦mile waved from the window as he prepared to leave for work. ¡°Have a great day, kiddo!¡± he called.
Isabelle waved back, adjusting her blazer. ¡°You too, Dad! Don¡¯t let your boss guilt you into working through lunch again!¡±
The streets of Starlight Heights were already lively, with neighbors chatting on their stoops and Pok¨¦mon playing in the communal park. A Growlithe barked happily as it chased after a young boy, and an elderly couple fed breadcrumbs to a flock of Starly perched on a wrought-iron fence.
As Isabelle made her way toward the busier streets, the gentle charm of her neighborhood gave way to Lumora¡¯s pulsing energy. The sounds of the city grew louder¡ªcars whizzing by, the distant buzz of machinery, and the chatter of pedestrians. Neon signs flickered to life even in the daylight, advertising everything from Pok¨¦mon-themed caf¨¦s to high-tech gadgets.
The towering glass facade of the League Headquarters loomed ahead, its sleek design a stark contrast to the older buildings surrounding it. Isabelle paused for a moment, craning her neck to take it all in. Trainers of all ages milled about, some heading inside to register for the League Circuit while others gathered around the holographic leaderboard displayed in the lobby.
The hologram showcased the top Trainers in Virelia, their names and stats rotating in bold, glowing letters. At the top of the list was Leonard Hartfield, his Hydreigon¡¯s recent victory still fresh in everyone¡¯s minds.
¡°Yeah, no pressure or anything,¡± Isabelle muttered to herself, quickening her pace.
As she continued toward the academy, Isabelle passed through the edge of the Neon District. The vibrant lights and bustling energy made it clear why this area was the city¡¯s entertainment hub. An arcade blared catchy tunes from its entrance, where a group of teenagers were enthusiastically playing a game involving Pok¨¦mon-themed karts.
Street performers dotted the sidewalks, their acts ranging from juggling Pok¨¦ Balls to a woman with a Chatot that mimicked the voices of passersby. Vendors called out from brightly colored stalls, selling everything from rare berries to custom Pok¨¦Doll keychains.
One stall caught Isabelle¡¯s attention¡ªa small cart with a hand-painted sign that read, ¡°Evolutionary Stones: Rare Finds!¡± A cluster of curious Trainers gathered around as the vendor displayed a glittering array of stones, each one casting a faint glow.
She lingered for a moment before shaking her head. ¡°Focus, Isabelle. No time for shiny distractions.¡±
The academy¡¯s imposing gates came into view, their intricate design featuring engravings of various Pok¨¦mon species. A steady stream of students passed through, their chatter creating a lively atmosphere. Some walked in pairs, their Pok¨¦mon trotting alongside them, while others stared intently at their VireBands or chatted on sleek earpieces.
Isabelle¡¯s stomach churned with nerves as she joined the crowd. The academy was massive, its architecture a blend of modern glass panels and traditional stonework. The sprawling campus included training fields, outdoor battle arenas, and greenhouses filled with vibrant plant life.
She spotted a group of older students gathered near a bulletin board, their uniforms pristine and their conversations confident. Great, Isabelle thought. I already feel like the awkward new kid, and I haven¡¯t even stepped inside yet
Chapter 3: The Magikarp Among Sharpedo
The academy¡¯s massive double doors loomed ahead, carved intricately with legendary Pok¨¦mon dancing across ancient forests and luminous seas. The designs weren¡¯t merely decorative; they seemed to swirl in the morning light, as though telling silent, heroic stories. Isabelle paused beneath them, her heart fluttering like a trapped Cutiefly. Here she was, at Lumora¡¯s Academy for Excellence¡ªa place where destiny felt ready to pounce at any moment.
She clutched her bag strap as if it might anchor her to the earth. Calm down, Isabelle. It¡¯s just a school, not Victory Road. Just a school with seven times as many students as home, and hallways that look like they belong in a luxury hotel. She tried to steady her breathing. Come on, Izzy. You chose this. Don¡¯t freeze now.
No turning back. Straightening her shoulders, she stepped forward and joined the flood of students streaming inside. The instant she crossed the threshold, she entered a world humming with possibility. The buzz of chatter ricocheted through the foyer, mingling with the faint calls of Pok¨¦mon that some lucky students had permission to bring into class. Compared to Verdantia¡¯s modest brick building surrounded by open fields, this academy felt like a labyrinth of sleek glass and polished metal. Everything gleamed so brightly it was hard not to squint.
Slender staircases spiraled upward, as though climbing into endless possibilities. Digital boards along the corridors flashed urgent announcements, upcoming club sign-ups, and class schedules. Neon-lit motivational quotes drifted across the walls like evolving constellations. One caught her eye, glowing in gentle pink script:
¡°Every Champion was once a beginner¡ªexcept maybe Cynthia.¡±
Clever. Very inspiring. Now where¡¯s homeroom?
Her stomach tightened. Back in Verdantia, everyone had known everyone. Teachers greeted students by name in the halls, and the entire school could fit into this lobby twice over. Here, anonymity pressed against her like a heavy hand. Just act like you know what you¡¯re doing. Fake it till you make it. Her father¡¯s voice echoed in her mind: ¡°You¡¯ve got this, Izzy.¡± She hoped he was right.
Isabelle fumbled out her schedule¡ªold-fashioned printed paper instead of the fancy digital interface on her VireBand. Room 203B. She tucked a strand of dark hair behind her ear and took a deep breath before forging ahead.
The corridors were canyons of glass and chrome, pristine enough that her own reflection followed her in the mirrored surfaces, a slightly pale girl with anxious eyes. She wove through the stream of bodies, catching snatches of conversation:
¡°¡ªKai Zephyr¡¯s last battle was unreal! His Skarmory¡ª¡±
¡°¡ªNeon Plaza tonight? New arcade games¡ª¡±
¡°¡ªMr. Kotomine assigning homework on day one? Seriously?¡±
No one addressed her. No one noticed her slight stumbles. She was invisible, which felt both relieving and disheartening. Let¡¯s see, 203B. Second floor, probably. The signs were sleek and minimalistic, and she swore the halls repeated themselves like a looping dream. After circling one identical corridor twice, her frustration mounted. Her grip tightened on her bag strap, knuckles whitening. Keep it together, Isabelle. You¡¯re not lost; you¡¯re just¡ exploring.
At last, she spotted a cluster of students heading up a staircase. Their easy banter suggested they knew where they were going. Isabelle followed at a slight distance, relieved when a sign at the landing read: Second Floor¡ª203-210.
Success. A small surge of pride warmed her chest. Not bad, Moreau. One step at a time.
Room 203B¡¯s door stood open, and as Isabelle entered, her heart lurched. The room was already full of students. Conversations drifted to a halt when she stepped inside, every gaze swinging toward her as if guided by an invisible pivot. She froze, feeling the hush spread through her limbs.
A woman with sharp glasses and a clipboard¡ªobviously the teacher¡ªraised an eyebrow. ¡°Can I help you?¡±
Isabelle cleared her throat. ¡°Uh, Isabelle. Isabelle Moreau. I¡¯m¡ new.¡± Brilliant introduction, Izzy. Nailed it. Her voice wobbled slightly, and she forced a smile.
The teacher¡¯s expression softened. ¡°Welcome, Isabelle. I¡¯m Ms. Chambers. Take a seat; we¡¯re about to begin.¡±
Spotting an empty chair near the back, Isabelle slipped into it, cheeks hot. She dared not look up, certain that everyone still watched her. But when she finally braved a glance, most had already returned to their conversations, curiosity sated. They probably won¡¯t even remember me tomorrow. Which might be a blessing.
Ms. Chambers moved to the front, tapping her clipboard lightly against the desk. She had a poised air of authority: a middle-aged woman with keen eyes that suggested nothing got past her. ¡°All right, class. Settle down. I¡¯ll be your homeroom and biology teacher this semester. Since we¡¯ll spend a lot of time together, let¡¯s start by introducing ourselves: name, where you¡¯re from, and something about you. Who¡¯s brave enough to go first?¡±
A boy in the front row shot up his hand as if spring-loaded. He stood with a theatrical flourish¡ªclean-cut hair, perfectly pressed uniform, and a confident smirk. ¡°Stefano Marino,¡± he declared, voice resonant. ¡°From Silverfield Village¡ªyou might have heard of it. Farming town turned rising star, just like me. I¡¯m here to crush every class, dominate the League Circuit, and become the next Champion.¡±
A ripple of chuckles followed. Stefano crossed his arms, soaking in the attention. Ms. Chambers nodded, unfazed. ¡°Ambitious. Thank you, Stefano.¡±
Another hand rose, this time more hesitantly. A boy in an oversized sweater and glasses fidgeted before speaking. ¡°I¡¯m Milo. I, um, really like stats¡ªbattle stats mostly. I track them for fun and want to be a Pok¨¦mon strategist someday.¡± He sank down quickly, cheeks pink, as if relieved to have survived the spotlight.
A girl with bright purple streaks in her hair leaned back casually, crossing one ankle over her knee. ¡°Clara, from Newmist City,¡± she said, voice low and cool. ¡°I¡¯m aiming to join the League next year with a Ghost-type team. No, I¡¯m not scared of them, and yes, I think they¡¯re cooler than any other type.¡± She smirked, daring anyone to challenge her.
Next to her, a boy who looked utterly uncomfortable cleared his throat. ¡°Elliot,¡± he said flatly. ¡°I don¡¯t like public speaking. That¡¯s¡ that¡¯s it.¡± The class laughed, and Ms. Chambers smiled indulgently. Isabelle couldn¡¯t help a tiny grin. I feel you, Elliot.
Near the back, a girl stood up with an easy grace. Her wavy light brown hair caught the overhead lights, and her hazel eyes gleamed with friendly confidence. ¡°Am¨¦lie L¨¦vesque,¡± she said brightly. ¡°My family moved from Coral Bay two years ago. We run a boutique for Pok¨¦mon accessories¡ªPok¨¦Ball cases, ribbons, you name it. If anyone needs something special for their partner, I¡¯m your girl.¡± Her voice rang clear, warm as a sunbeam. Isabelle felt a pang of envy. She looks so at home, like she¡¯s been here forever. Am¨¦lie¡¯s smile reached her eyes, genuine and open, as if welcoming everyone to be her friend.
Ms. Chambers nodded, then glanced at Isabelle. ¡°Isabelle Moreau, you¡¯re next.¡±
Time slowed. Isabelle¡¯s heart thumped as she stood, her knees a bit wobbly. Keep it simple, Izzy. ¡°I¡¯m Isabelle Moreau,¡± she said softly. ¡°I just moved here from Verdantia.¡± She swallowed. The silence stretched, so she added, ¡°I like reading, and I have an Azurill.¡± Her voice felt too small in this big room.
Ms. Chambers offered a gentle smile. ¡°Welcome to Lumora, Isabelle.¡±
Isabelle sat down, heat crawling up her neck. Great. The awkward bookworm with an Azurill. Might as well have worn a sign. She risked a glance at Am¨¦lie, who gave her a tiny nod and encouraging smile. Isabelle¡¯s chest loosened. Okay, maybe sunshine personified isn¡¯t so bad. This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.
The rest of the introductions blurred together¡ªvarious backgrounds, ambitions, and personalities weaving a tapestry of possibilities. Stefano¡¯s confidence hovered over the room like a lingering spotlight, Clara¡¯s edgy demeanor stood in contrast, Milo¡¯s quiet intellect hummed in the background, Elliot¡¯s discomfort mirrored Isabelle¡¯s own, and Am¨¦lie¡¯s warmth brightened everything around her. Isabelle took careful notes: not just on names and hometowns, but on subtle gestures¡ªStefano¡¯s self-assured lean, Clara¡¯s amused smirk, Milo¡¯s downcast gaze, Am¨¦lie¡¯s poised posture. So many pieces of a puzzle I don¡¯t yet know how to solve.
Ms. Chambers clapped her hands lightly. ¡°Excellent introductions. I look forward to seeing what each of you brings to this class. Now, let¡¯s talk about the syllabus.¡± She launched into an overview of the semester¡ªassignments, field trips, lab activities¡ªwhile Isabelle dutifully scribbled notes. The drone of the teacher¡¯s voice steadied Isabelle¡¯s nerves. Learning was familiar ground. Facts, figures, instructions¡ªthese she could handle. No one¡¯s watching me now, she reminded herself. I can survive this.
When the lunch bell rang, Isabelle followed the current of students pouring out into the hallways. Her stomach knotted at the thought of the cafeteria. At Verdantia, she¡¯d always known exactly where to sit. Here, she was a Magikarp flopping through unknown waters. Just find a quiet corner. You don¡¯t need a social miracle on day one.
The cafeteria doors swung open, and Isabelle was immediately swallowed by a tide of noise and chaos. The room was massive¡ªhigh ceilings with sleek beams crisscrossing overhead, animated banners on the walls blaring motivational slogans like ¡°Dream Big with Dragon Types!¡± and ¡°Bug Pok¨¦mon: Small but Mighty!¡± Hundreds of students milled about, chatting, laughing, and weaving through the maze of tables and food lines. The sheer energy of it all felt overwhelming, like being dropped into a stadium mid-game.
Isabelle lingered by the door, clutching her lunchbox like a lifeline. Her father¡¯s cheery goodbye echoed faintly in her head: ¡°You¡¯ve got this, Izzy.¡± Easier said than done. Okay, step one: find a table. Step two: eat quickly and quietly. Step three: don¡¯t draw attention. How hard can it be?
She took a tentative step forward, her eyes scanning the room. The food counters were surrounded by slow-moving lines of students chatting as they waited. The smell of melted cheese and roasted vegetables wafted through the air, mingling with something vaguely metallic from the kitchen. Whatever was in those trays, Isabelle wasn¡¯t curious enough to find out. ¨¦mile¡¯s carefully packed lunch felt like a small miracle now. No standing in line, no mystery stew. One win for Team Moreau.
Groups of students huddled around the tables, staking their claims in clusters that looked impossible to break into. At one, a boy in a green jacket gestured wildly, recounting some story that had his friends in stitches.
¡°And then I told him¡ª¡®You can¡¯t evolve your Charjabug without a power station!¡¯ And guess what? He¡¯d been trying to force it with Thunder Stones for weeks!¡±
His friend, a girl with a ponytail and a skeptical expression, snorted. ¡°You¡¯re kidding. How do people even survive with that little common sense?¡±
Nearby, a trio of girls leaned over their trays, voices hushed but conspiratorial.
¡°Did you see Beatrice¡¯s VireBand? She¡¯s got one of those limited-edition Fairy-Type themes!¡±
¡°Ugh, of course she does. Her parents probably ordered it custom.¡±
¡°She¡¯s probably too scared to even use it. Remember when she freaked out over that Growlithe in gym class?¡±
Isabelle sighed internally, her shoulders tensing as she wove through the tables. Every group seemed to have its place, its rhythm. Everyone belonged somewhere¡ªexcept her. Verdantia wasn¡¯t exactly a social wonderland, but at least I knew who to sit with. Here? I¡¯m a Magikarp in a tank full of Sharpedo.
Her sneakers squeaked softly on the polished floor as she kept moving, trying to look like she had a destination in mind. She passed a group of older students gathered around a VireBand projecting a holographic battle replay.
¡°Check out that Hydreigon!¡± one boy said, pointing at the flickering image. ¡°It dodged three Ice Beams in a row. Three!¡±
His friend shook his head, his mouth full of sandwich. ¡°Yeah, but you can tell it¡¯s all speed EV training. Bet it¡¯d go down in one hit if someone timed a Focus Blast right.¡±
She drifted past another table where a pair of students were comparing notes on their mock battle strategies.
¡°¡You really need something to counter Steel-types. Maybe a Ground move?¡±
¡°My Hitmonlee can take care of it! Brick Break, bam. Done.¡±
The knot in Isabelle¡¯s stomach tightened. Everyone seemed so confident¡ªso at ease in this noisy chaos. She felt like an intruder in a world that had already moved on without her. Keep walking, Izzy. Look busy. Act like you know what you¡¯re doing, and maybe no one will notice you don¡¯t.
Finally, she spotted salvation: a small table near the back corner, blissfully unoccupied. It wasn¡¯t the most glamorous spot¡ªhalf-hidden behind a vending machine with a view of the trash bins¡ªbut it was quiet, and it was hers. Isabelle darted over and plopped down into the chair before anyone else could claim it. She let out a shaky breath, the noise of the cafeteria still a dull roar in her ears but slightly less suffocating here.
She set her lunchbox on the table, flipping the lid open to reveal ¨¦mile¡¯s careful packing: a neatly wrapped sandwich, a container of sliced berries, and a thermos of tea. Simple, familiar, comforting. Isabelle bit into a slice of Oran Berry, savoring its tangy sweetness. Home in a box, she thought, the tiniest bit of tension easing from her shoulders.
Pulling up her sleeve, Isabelle tapped the VireBand strapped to her wrist. It lit up with a soft hum, its sleek interface glowing to life. The main menu greeted her: Trainer Profile, Goals Tracker, Customization. She swiped to the Trainer Profile, where her derpy Magikarp icon flopped happily. The empty field for Trainer ID below it glared back at her, a constant reminder of everything she hadn¡¯t done yet.
To officially register as a Trainer, Isabelle would have to visit the League HQ and get a Trainer ID. Without it, her VireBand was more of a fancy toy than a fully functional tool. Most of the advanced features¡ªlike battle analytics and Pok¨¦mon care tracking¡ªwere locked behind that ID. So basically, I¡¯m a guest user in my own life. Fantastic.
She tapped the Goals Tracker tab next. The entry she¡¯d typed the night before blinked up at her: ¡°Master Bubble Beam without falling over.¡± Isabelle smirked, remembering Azzy¡¯s indignant squeak when she wrote it. One day, Missy. One day. Her thumb hovered over the ¡°Add Goal¡± button, but she hesitated. What am I supposed to put? ¡°Make it through lunch without embarrassing myself¡±?
The customization options weren¡¯t much better. Without a Trainer ID, most of the tabs were just grayed-out placeholders: badge slots, battle stats, and even a ¡°Title¡± field where Trainers could assign themselves grandiose nicknames like ¡°The Dragon Slayer¡± or ¡°Misty¡¯s Nemesis.¡± Isabelle rolled her eyes and typed in ¡°Professional Flopper¡± for fun. The Magikarp icon flopped on the screen, as if approving her choice.
Isabelle chuckled softly, the sound almost drowned out by the cafeteria noise. Perfect. If nothing else, I¡¯ll be memorable for my complete lack of ambition. She leaned back in her chair, letting her thumb idly swipe across the Explore tab. A detailed map of Lumora City flickered to life, its icons marking key points of interest: the League HQ, the Glow Dome, Pok¨¦Centers, and various shops in the Neon District. Most of the icons were grayed out, inaccessible until registration.
She tapped the League HQ marker, and a description popped up: ¡°The heart of Virelia¡¯s League Circuit! Register as a Trainer, compete in battles, and track your journey to become Champion!¡± Isabelle snorted. No pressure, huh? Just the entire weight of my potential future staring me down. Cool, cool.
As she pondered, movement caught her eye. Someone navigated through the crowded tables with surprising grace, tray balanced effortlessly. Isabelle recognized the wavy light brown hair and hazel eyes. Am¨¦lie, from class. The girl¡¯s uniform looked as though it had been tailored just for her, and her VireBand¡¯s display glinted where it caught the overhead lights. She seemed to be scanning the room, searching for something¡ªor someone.
Then Am¨¦lie¡¯s gaze settled on Isabelle¡¯s corner, and her smile widened as if lighting up that entire shadowy spot. She angled her path toward the vending machine and Isabelle¡¯s lonely table.
Isabelle¡¯s stomach flipped. Oh no. She¡¯s coming over. Stay cool, Izzy. Her heart fluttered like a trapped bird. She could practically feel the cafeteria receding into background noise. Don¡¯t say something stupid, don¡¯t look panicked. Just¡ breathe.
Still, what did Am¨¦lie want? Maybe she was just being friendly, or maybe she wanted to find out more about the ¡°awkward bookworm with an Azurill.¡± Isabelle swallowed hard. The noise of the cafeteria faded, as if the spotlight had narrowed onto them.
Isabelle¡¯s stomach flipped. Oh fuck. Incoming. Shit. Act normal. Whatever that means.
Chapter 4: Sunshine Personified
The cafeteria noise swirled around Isabelle like an untamed tide¡ªsnippets of conversation, laughter, and clattering trays blending into a chaotic symphony. She was just finishing her sandwich when a shadow fell across her table. Isabelle looked up, startled, to find the girl from homeroom¡ªAm¨¦lie L¨¦vesque¡ªstanding there, tray in hand, her hazel eyes warm and inviting.
¡°Mind if I join you?¡± Am¨¦lie asked, her voice easy and confident, like they were old friends instead of near strangers.
How do people do that? Isabelle thought, the question a quiet mix of admiration and disbelief. Just walk up to someone and¡ talk?
¡°Uh, sure,¡± Isabelle said aloud, her voice barely loud enough to be heard over the cafeteria din.
Am¨¦lie grinned, sliding into the seat across from her. ¡°Thanks. The rest of the place is like a Tauros stampede, and I¡¯m not in the mood to wrestle someone for a seat.¡± She unwrapped her sandwich and glanced at Isabelle¡¯s lunchbox. ¡°From home?¡±
¡°Yeah,¡± Isabelle replied, reflexively fiddling with the corner of her napkin. ¡°My dad packed it.¡±
¡°Nice. Honestly, I¡¯m jealous. The food here isn¡¯t bad, but it¡¯s no home-cooked meal.¡± Am¨¦lie took a bite of her sandwich, chewing thoughtfully before continuing. ¡°So, how¡¯s your first day going? Adjusting to Lumora yet?¡±
¡°It¡¯s¡ a lot,¡± Isabelle admitted after a moment, choosing her words carefully. ¡°Big. Loud. Different from Verdantia.¡±
Am¨¦lie nodded knowingly. ¡°I get that. When my family moved here, it felt like jumping into the middle of a battle without knowing what moves I had.¡±
That earned a small, involuntary smile from Isabelle.
¡°Where did you move from?¡±
¡°Coral Bay. It¡¯s a smaller coastal city, way less flashy than Lumora,¡± Am¨¦lie said, her voice light but carrying a thread of nostalgia. ¡°I remember my first week here¡ªit was a disaster. I got lost trying to find the Glow Dome, and somehow ended up in the Neon District. Let me tell you, wandering into a VR arcade and getting dragged into a multiplayer battle? Not part of the plan. I had no idea what I was doing, and this little kid¡ªlike, eight years old¡ªcompletely destroyed me with a Porygon2.¡±
Isabelle chuckled despite herself. ¡°That¡ actually sounds kind of fun.¡±
¡°Now it is,¡± Am¨¦lie said, laughing. ¡°Back then, I thought I¡¯d never live it down. But hey, I made it out alive. And I found this amazing caf¨¦ near the boutique my family runs.¡±
¡°Your family owns a boutique?¡± Isabelle asked, her curiosity sparking despite her usual hesitance.
¡°Yeah, in the Neon District. We make handmade Pok¨¦mon accessories¡ªribbons, custom Pok¨¦Ball cases, stuff like that. My mom¡¯s the real artist, but I help with designs sometimes.¡± Am¨¦lie¡¯s face lit up as she spoke, her pride in her family evident. ¡°It¡¯s kind of our thing. If you ever need something fancy for your Azurill, let me know. I can hook you up.¡±
¡°Thanks,¡± Isabelle said, surprised by the genuine warmth in Am¨¦lie¡¯s offer.
Am¨¦lie leaned back slightly, her hazel eyes studying Isabelle with casual curiosity. ¡°So, Verdantia. What¡¯s it like there?¡±
Isabelle hesitated, her instinctive guardedness flaring. ¡°Quiet. Small. Everyone knows everyone.¡± She paused, glancing around the bustling cafeteria. ¡°This is¡ the opposite of that.¡±
Am¨¦lie nodded, her smile softening. ¡°Yeah, Lumora can be overwhelming. But you¡¯ll get used to it. And if you ever feel like you¡¯re drowning, just find a quiet spot¡ªlike this one.¡±
Isabelle managed a small smile. ¡°Thanks.¡±
Am¨¦lie took another bite of her sandwich, gesturing casually to Isabelle¡¯s wrist. ¡°So, what do you think of the VireBand so far? Pretty sleek, huh?¡±
Isabelle glanced down at the band wrapped snugly around her wrist. Its interface had gone idle, displaying the simple time screen against a soft lavender glow. ¡°It¡¯s¡ cool, I guess. Still figuring it out. There¡¯s so much stuff on here, and half of it¡¯s locked until you register with the League.¡±
¡°Yeah, that¡¯s the catch,¡± Am¨¦lie said with a knowing grin, holding up her own wrist to show off her Grass-Type theme. ¡°I got mine as a gift from my parents. They weren¡¯t exactly thrilled when I told them I wanted to go on a journey, so this was kind of their way of saying, ¡®Prove you¡¯re serious first.¡¯ Coming here to study is step one in earning their approval¡ªand my starter.¡± Her eyes sparkled with determination as she spoke.Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
¡°Wow,¡± Isabelle said softly, surprised by Am¨¦lie¡¯s openness. ¡°That¡¯s¡ ambitious.¡±
Am¨¦lie shrugged, a playful smile tugging at her lips. ¡°Well, I¡¯ve got a whole plan. Show them I can handle myself here, learn everything I can, and when the time comes, I¡¯ll be ready to start my adventure. What about you? How¡¯d you get yours?¡± She nodded toward Isabelle¡¯s VireBand. ¡°It looks pretty recent¡ªnot the latest model, but definitely loaded.¡±
Isabelle hesitated, her fingers brushing the device absentmindedly. ¡°It was a gift¡ from my dad. He works at VireTech.¡±
Am¨¦lie¡¯s eyebrows shot up. ¡°No way! Your dad works at VireTech? That¡¯s, like, the hub for everything. You must be rolling in Pok¨¦Dollars.¡±
¡°Far from it,¡± Isabelle said quickly, laughing a little at the absurdity. ¡°He¡¯s just an analyst there. Crunches numbers, does financial stuff. The VireBand was his way of¡ encouraging me, I guess. A push to get out there, even if I¡¯m not, you know, ready for anything big.¡±
Am¨¦lie nodded thoughtfully. ¡°I get it. That¡¯s still pretty awesome, though. You¡¯ve got access to cutting-edge tech. I mean, look at this thing.¡± She tapped her own VireBand, the screen lighting up. ¡°Mine¡¯s got AR integration, too, but I barely know how to use half the features.¡±
¡°Same,¡± Isabelle admitted, swiping to bring her own interface back to life. The Magikarp icon flopped cheerfully on her profile screen, a ridiculous reminder of her earlier customization choices.
Am¨¦lie laughed when she saw it. ¡°Oh my Arceus, is that your icon? A Magikarp?¡±
¡°Hey,¡± Isabelle said, mock-defensive, ¡°it¡¯s symbolic. If a flopping fish can become a Gyarados, then maybe there¡¯s hope for me.¡±
Am¨¦lie grinned. ¡°Okay, fair. You¡¯ve got me there.¡±
They both began scrolling through their bands, exploring the functions available to them. Isabelle swiped through the familiar sections: Trainer Profile, Goals Tracker, and Explore. She tapped on the Explore tab, the map of Lumora City flickering to life.
¡°Check this out,¡± she said, turning the screen toward Am¨¦lie. ¡°The map¡¯s got all these points of interest. League HQ, Glow Dome, Pok¨¦mon Centers¡¡±
Am¨¦lie leaned closer, examining the icons. ¡°That¡¯s so cool. And you can¡¯t access everything yet, right? No Trainer ID?¡±
¡°Not until I register at the League HQ,¡± Isabelle confirmed, tapping on one of the grayed-out icons. The pop-up message read, ¡°Restricted¡ªTrainer ID Required.¡±
¡°Same here,¡± Am¨¦lie said, mirroring Isabelle¡¯s action. ¡°But hey, once we do register, we¡¯ll have full access. Battle analytics, Pok¨¦mon training tools¡ It¡¯s gonna be amazing.¡±
¡°Battle analytics?¡± Isabelle asked, raising an eyebrow.
¡°Oh, yeah,¡± Am¨¦lie said enthusiastically. ¡°The VireBand can track your battles, analyze your Pok¨¦mon¡¯s performance, and even suggest strategies. Like, if you¡¯ve got a Grass-Type going up against a Fire-Type, it¡¯ll recommend moves or switches based on the situation. Of course, all of that¡¯s locked until you register.¡± She sighed wistfully. ¡°One more reason to get out there and prove myself.¡±
Isabelle nodded, though the thought of battling on that level made her stomach twist. Baby steps, Izzy. You¡¯re not taking on a League Champion anytime soon.
Around them, the cafeteria¡¯s noise hummed like a living thing. Students moved from table to table, carrying trays or clustered in tight groups. Snippets of conversation floated through the air like fleeting messages on the wind.
At a nearby table, a boy held up his VireBand, displaying a clip of a battle replay. ¡°Look at this! BraixenVivi totally crushed that challenger in under five minutes.¡±
¡°Of course she did,¡± his friend said, laughing. ¡°She¡¯s got that strategy down to a science. Did you see how her Braixen blazed that poor Sunflora?¡±
Am¨¦lie¡¯s ears perked up, and she turned to Isabelle with a grin. ¡°Wait. Did I just hear BraixenVivi? You watch her streams too?¡±
Isabelle blinked, caught off guard. ¡°Uh, yeah. Sometimes. Azzy and I watched a ton of her streams back in Verdantia.¡±
¡°No way!¡± Am¨¦lie said, her excitement bubbling over. ¡°I¡¯m obsessed with her. She¡¯s so good at explaining her strategies, and her Pok¨¦mon are adorable. Did you see the charity stream she did last month? That battle against the Alakazam was wild.¡±
Isabelle nodded, feeling a small spark of connection. ¡°Yeah. I couldn¡¯t believe how her Braixen countered that Focus Blast. It was like she predicted the whole thing.¡±
¡°She¡¯s a total genius,¡± Am¨¦lie agreed, her smile wide. ¡°Okay, Isabelle. We officially have to hang out now. After school, you¡¯re coming with me. There¡¯s so much I want to show you in the city¡ªshops, caf¨¦s, cool spots you¡¯d never find on your own.¡±
Isabelle hesitated, her anxiety flaring at the thought of navigating Lumora¡¯s bustling streets. ¡°I don¡¯t know¡¡±
¡°Come on,¡± Am¨¦lie said, her tone light but insistent. ¡°You said you¡¯re still figuring out the city, right? Consider me your tour guide. Trust me, it¡¯ll be fun.¡±
Isabelle glanced at her VireBand, the glowing map reminding her of how little she¡¯d explored so far. Maybe this wouldn¡¯t be so bad. ¡°Okay,¡± she said finally. ¡°But don¡¯t blame me if I get us lost.¡±
¡°Deal,¡± Am¨¦lie said, laughing. ¡°But spoiler alert¡ªI don¡¯t get lost.¡±
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, and the two girls stood to gather their things. As they joined the stream of students heading back to class, Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but feel a small, cautious sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, Lumora City wouldn¡¯t be so overwhelming after all.
Chapter 5: City Rhythms, Bustling Boutique
The school day blurred into a whirlwind of activity, a mix of lessons, unfamiliar faces, and Isabelle¡¯s relentless attempts to remain invisible. Biology was manageable¡ªshe didn¡¯t trip over her words when called on¡ªmath was tolerable thanks to Kotomine¡¯s quiet clarifications, and history had been a battle against stifled yawns. By the time the final bell rang, she felt like she¡¯d survived a battlefield, mentally checking off her victories: Didn¡¯t embarrass myself. Didn¡¯t cry. Didn¡¯t trip. That¡¯s a win.
Isabelle packed her things, weaving through the bustling crowd of students streaming toward the exit. Her VireBand buzzed softly on her wrist¡ªa notification reminding her to check her ¡°Goals Tracker.¡± She ignored it for now, focusing on navigating her way to the front gates. The halls echoed with fragments of conversations, snippets of laughter, and the occasional shout from someone reuniting with friends.
¡°Did you see the homework already? Ms. Chambers is brutal!¡±
¡°Neon District tonight? They¡¯ve got a two-for-one deal at the arcade!¡±
¡°I swear, if Beatrice brags about her VireBand theme one more time, I¡¯m switching tables.¡±
Isabelle ducked her head, weaving through the crowd like a Zubat dodging flashlights. She repeated her mantra like a survival strategy: Keep moving. Blend in. Don¡¯t hit anyone. Don¡¯t get noticed.
Finally, she broke free of the building¡¯s suffocating buzz and stepped into the open air. The sunlight had softened into that late-afternoon golden hue¡ªLumora City looked different under it, like something out of a postcard. The sleek buildings gleamed with amber highlights, the clean lines of their architecture softened by the time of day. Cars lined the plaza, parents waving down kids, groups of friends claiming the benches as their unofficial hangout spots. The hum of life around her was so effortless, so confident.
And then, like a beam of sunlight cutting straight through her comfort zone¡ª¡°Isabelle! Hey!¡±
She froze. Oh no. A familiar voice, bright and cheerful enough to make her brace for impact. Isabelle turned and spotted Am¨¦lie jogging toward her, all perfect smiles and windswept grace. It was almost unfair how put-together she looked, like she¡¯d stepped out of a magazine. Does this girl even sweat?
Isabelle managed a small, awkward nod. ¡°Oh. Yeah. I¡¯m¡ here.¡± Brilliant. Absolutely captivating conversation skills.
Am¨¦lie didn¡¯t seem to notice¡ªor if she did, she was too nice to point it out. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder, bouncing on her heels like a Mareep full of static energy. ¡°So! Ready to explore? I know this amazing route through the city¡ªway better than any of the boring tourist brochures.¡±
Isabelle blinked. Explore? Lumora City? Part of her hesitated, her natural instinct urging her to find the quickest route home, to hide away from the world she was still trying to navigate. But there was something infectious about Am¨¦lie¡¯s excitement¡ªlike a spark trying to light up something long buried under layers of anxiety.
She cleared her throat. ¡°Yeah. Sure.¡± Cool. Smooth. So articulate. Someone give you a gold star.
Am¨¦lie¡¯s grin widened as she looped her arm through Isabelle¡¯s¡ªnot waiting for permission¡ªbefore leading her toward the street. ¡°Trust me, you¡¯ll love it. Lumora isn¡¯t just buildings and neon lights. There¡¯s this energy here¡ªlike every corner has a story. You just have to know where to look.¡±
The girls walked side by side, stepping into the rhythm of the city as the streets stretched out before them. Victory Avenue bustled with life, its wide sidewalks filled with students, professionals, and the occasional street performer showing off a Pok¨¦mon-inspired act. Isabelle kept her gaze forward, her fingers nervously adjusting her bag strap. Am¨¦lie, on the other hand, seemed completely at ease, pointing out landmarks and weaving through the crowd like she¡¯d been born to do this.
¡°That¡¯s Aurora Lane up ahead,¡± Am¨¦lie said, gesturing to a sleek, upscale street lined with shops and caf¨¦s. ¡°The perfect spot for window shopping if we¡¯re feeling fancy later.¡±
Isabelle nodded absently, the scale of the city still overwhelming. Window shopping? More like window-panicking. Do people just walk into places like that?
¡°Stick close, newbie,¡± Am¨¦lie teased, glancing back with a playful smirk. ¡°Lumora¡¯s a labyrinth if you don¡¯t know where you¡¯re going. First stop¡ªCentral Plaza. Trust me, you¡¯ll love it.¡±
The hum of activity was almost deafening. The Harmony Fountain roared softly at the center of the plaza, sending arcs of sparkling water into the air. Around its mosaic base¡ªintricately designed to reflect the blending of nature and innovation¡ªpeople sat chatting, feeding their Pok¨¦mon, or taking pictures. A little Litten batted at droplets from the edge, earning delighted squeals from a small group of kids.
¡°Pretty impressive, right?¡± Am¨¦lie said, gesturing to the plaza like she owned it. ¡°Central Plaza has everything. Everything. There¡¯s Hayashi Corporation¡¯s tower, EvoTech over there, and oh¡ªlook!¡±
She pointed excitedly to an enormous sprawling complex ahead: Pok¨¦Studios. Isabelle had seen it plastered all over holoscreens and trainer feeds, but seeing it in person was like being smacked in the face with corporate grandeur. The complex dominated the skyline even among the towering skyscrapers, its sleek facade glittering with holographic projections and surrounded by throngs of people.
Front and center, a colossal Detective Pikachu banner commanded attention. The golden-furred Pikachu, decked out in its signature deerstalker hat and magnifying glass, stood atop a crumbling rooftop as rain streaked dramatically behind it. The text below read:
¡°Coming Soon: Detective Pikachu - Unlocking the Enigma Files!¡±
¡°Is that¡?¡± Isabelle began, narrowing her eyes at the title. ¡°Are we seriously hyping up another Detective Pikachu movie? What¡¯s he unlocking this time, the secret to overhyped marketing?¡±
Am¨¦lie snorted, elbowing her. ¡°Oh, come on. Detective Pikachu¡¯s a classic. It¡¯s like the Arceus of movie franchises¡ªuntouchable. And the Enigma Files? Sounds epic.¡±
¡°I¡¯m sure,¡± Isabelle deadpanned, eyeing a nearby pop-up stall. It was overflowing with Detective Pikachu merch: plushies, shiny keychains, oversized mugs shaped like Pikachu¡¯s head, and even a miniature replica of its deerstalker hat. People crowded around the stall like Wingulls on a dropped Pok¨¦ Puff, waving credits at a harried vendor. ¡°If they slap a deerstalker on it, they¡¯ll sell it,¡± she muttered.
Nearby, a massive holoscreen blared the trailer, showing the iconic Pikachu leaping through a neon-lit cityscape, lightning flashing ominously as it quipped, ¡°Every mystery has a spark. Let¡¯s find it.¡± The camera panned to the Pikachu zapping a thug who was attempting to flee with a crystal shard. The crowd ooohed appreciatively.
¡°I¡¯m telling you,¡± Am¨¦lie insisted, ¡°this Pikachu¡¯s a phenomenon for a reason. He solves everything. Pok¨¦mon theft? Done. Cross-region conspiracies? Solved. The mystery of why my brother keeps burning his toast? Probably handled off-screen.¡±
Isabelle rolled her eyes, half-watching a kid run by holding a plush Detective Pikachu in one hand and a buttered scone in the other. ¡°It¡¯s just¡ he¡¯s so golden. And smug. Why does his fur have to sparkle like he bathes in Stardust every morning?¡±If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
¡°Because he¡¯s fabulous,¡± Am¨¦lie said, spreading her arms dramatically. ¡°And don¡¯t act like you don¡¯t like him. Everyone loves Detective Pikachu.¡±
¡°Fine,¡± Isabelle relented, picking up a Pikachu deerstalker hat from a nearby display table. It was the perfect size for Azzy, and for a brief moment, she imagined her little Azurill waddling around with it on. Adorable. But then she glanced at the price tag and nearly choked. ¡°Two thousand credits for a hat? What, is it woven with strands of Pikachu fur?¡± She quickly put it back down, muttering, ¡°Hard pass.¡±
The Central Plaza buzzed with energy as Isabelle and Am¨¦lie strolled through its heart. Around them, street performers vied for attention¡ªone juggled flaming torches while his Charmeleon mimicked the act with Ember, and another played an acoustic rendition of a popular theme song on a well-loved guitar. A melodic hum from the Harmony Fountain provided a soothing backdrop to the lively chaos.
Am¨¦lie paused at a nearby bench, plopping herself down with the grace of a Skitty leaping into a sunbeam. ¡°Alright,¡± she announced, ¡°one more stop before we hit the Neon District. I¡¯ve got something to show you.¡±
Isabelle tilted her head, crossing her arms. ¡°If it involves another overly priced Pikachu hat, I¡¯m out.¡±
Am¨¦lie laughed, waving her hand dismissively. ¡°Oh, please. I wouldn¡¯t subject you to more capitalism crimes. This is way better¡ªand free.¡±
Before Isabelle could protest, Am¨¦lie reached into her bag and pulled out a small packet of Pok¨¦puffs. With a mischievous grin, she knelt down by the edge of the fountain and tapped the stone softly. ¡°Hey, little guys, it¡¯s treat time!¡±
A pair of wild Duckletts waddled out from behind the fountain¡¯s base, their blue feathers glistening as they quacked in anticipation. Am¨¦lie tossed them a Pok¨¦puff each, her face lighting up as the Pok¨¦mon gobbled them down. ¡°Aren¡¯t they cute? They¡¯ve been hanging around the fountain for weeks now. I¡¯ve been bribing them to like me.¡±
Isabelle snorted, crouching down to get a better look at the Duckletts. One of them tilted its head at her before waddling over curiously. She extended her hand, and the Ducklett gave her an approving quack before nibbling gently at her fingers. ¡°Okay, that is cute,¡± she admitted, her lips twitching into a small smile. ¡°You¡¯re like the Dr. Pok¨¦mon of Central Plaza.¡±
¡°Thanks,¡± Am¨¦lie said, tossing another Pok¨¦puff to the second Ducklett. ¡°But seriously, this place has everything. You could spend a whole day just watching people and their Pok¨¦mon here. Oh, look at that!¡± She pointed toward a group of kids cheering on a Machop who was attempting to balance on a giant inflatable Pok¨¦ball. It wobbled precariously but stayed upright, earning a round of applause. ¡°See what I mean? Never a dull moment.¡±
Isabelle straightened up, brushing off her knees. ¡°Yeah, but it¡¯s a bit¡ much. All these people. It¡¯s like they have endless energy.¡±
Am¨¦lie nodded sympathetically. ¡°It¡¯s a lot to take in, for sure. But hey, that¡¯s why the Neon District is perfect. It¡¯s a little chaotic, but it¡¯s got its quieter corners too. Trust me, you¡¯ll love it. Plus,¡± she added with a wink, ¡°it¡¯s where my mom¡¯s boutique is. I can finally introduce you to the source of all my fabulous accessories.¡±
Isabelle raised an eyebrow. ¡°And by ¡®introduce,¡¯ you mean rope me into buying something, don¡¯t you?¡±
Am¨¦lie gasped in mock offense. ¡°How dare you? I would never¡ªokay, maybe. But only because I know you¡¯ll love it. Come on, it¡¯s just down the street.¡±
Isabelle sighed, her lips twitching into a reluctant smile. ¡°Alright, lead the way. But if your mom tries to upsell me a ribbon for Azzy, I¡¯m holding you responsible.¡±
Am¨¦lie laughed, looping her arm through Isabelle¡¯s as they headed toward the Neon District. ¡°Deal. Just wait until you see it¡ªit¡¯s got lights, colors, and probably the best Pok¨¦puff caf¨¦ in the whole city. You¡¯ll be hooked.¡±
Isabelle glanced around again, taking in every detail. Small personal touches scattered across the boutique added to its charm: an old photo framed on the back wall showed a much younger Madeleine holding an enormous bouquet in a coastal setting, the sea glimmering behind her; tucked beside it was a small glass case filled with pressed flowers and what looked like faded notes. Clearly, this shop was more than just a business¡ªit was history.
¡°Your shop¡¯s amazing,¡± Isabelle said honestly. ¡°It feels¡ alive.¡±
Madeleine¡¯s expression softened. ¡°Merci, ch¨¨re. That¡¯s the magic of flowers, isn¡¯t it? They¡¯re living stories¡ªreminders of celebrations, moments of love, and even quiet grief.¡±
Grief? Isabelle¡¯s gaze flickered toward Madeleine, but the woman¡¯s smile didn¡¯t falter. Something about the softness in her tone, though, hinted at memories Isabelle didn¡¯t dare pry into.
Madeleine turned her attention back to Am¨¦lie. ¡°Is your father back yet?¡±
¡°No, he¡¯s still out picking up stock from the suppliers,¡± Am¨¦lie replied, absentmindedly twirling a ribbon from a nearby shelf. ¡°He said he¡¯d be back before dinner.¡±
¡°Of course,¡± Madeleine murmured, a twinge of worry creasing her brow. ¡°The roads have been busy lately. I¡¯ll check on him later.¡±
Am¨¦lie tugged Isabelle toward a narrow doorway tucked in the back corner of the shop, clearly sensing the impending mom-worry. ¡°Come on, Isabelle. I¡¯ll show you upstairs.¡±
The staircase creaked softly underfoot as they climbed to the second floor. The walls were lined with small framed photos¡ªsnapshots of family moments. One caught Isabelle¡¯s attention: a boy in his late teens, his dark hair tousled, standing proudly in a League Conference stadium with a Pok¨¦Ball in hand. ¡°Is that your brother?¡± she asked.
¡°Yeah,¡± Am¨¦lie said, smiling fondly. ¡°That¡¯s Aim¨¦. He¡¯s prepping for the Circuit right now. Top eight in Virelia two years ago. He¡¯s determined to win this time.¡±
¡°He looks like a pro already,¡± Isabelle said, genuinely impressed.
Am¨¦lie snorted. ¡°Oh, he¡¯s good, no doubt. But living with him? Nightmare. Imagine sharing a room with someone who sleep-talks strategies like ¡®Hydro Pump into Ice Beam for coverage!¡¯¡± She pushed open a door at the end of the hallway. ¡°Speaking of that room¡ªhere it is.¡±
The space was small but full of personality. The bed was tucked against the wall, covered in a quilt stitched with floral patches that matched the shop¡¯s charm. A corkboard hung above the desk, cluttered with pinned drawings, ticket stubs, and faded photos of Am¨¦lie and her brother at various Pok¨¦mon events. A few stacks of books were piled neatly on the floor, next to a drawer slightly ajar with clothing peeking out.
¡°It¡¯s¡ cozy,¡± Isabelle said with a smile, stepping inside. ¡°You and your brother shared this?¡±
¡°For years,¡± Am¨¦lie said, flopping onto the bed with a dramatic sigh. ¡°But once he left for the League Circuit, I got the room to myself. Best. Day. Ever.¡±
Isabelle chuckled and perched on the edge of the desk chair. ¡°Your parents must be proud of him.¡±
¡°They are,¡± Am¨¦lie replied, quieter now. ¡°But they worry too. Especially Mom. She lived through some rough times when she was younger. The idea of sending me off to do the same thing Aim¨¦¡¯s doing?¡± Am¨¦lie sighed again, more genuine this time. ¡°It freaks her out. She never says it outright, but I know.¡±
Isabelle looked down at her hands, fidgeting with a loose thread on her sleeve. ¡°Yeah¡ I get that.¡±
Am¨¦lie sat up, offering a small smile. ¡°Anyway. Enough about my cramped room and existential family drama. You ready to see the real Neon District? The part that glows?¡±
Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but smile back. ¡°Sure. I¡¯m curious what else this place has up its sleeve.¡±
Am¨¦lie grinned and hopped up, leading Isabelle back downstairs. As they stepped out into the evening streets, the Neon District was already beginning to wake up¡ªits lights flickering on like stars scattered across steel and glass. The streets thrummed with energy, and Isabelle felt a small flicker of excitement stir in her chest. Maybe Lumora City isn¡¯t so bad after all.
Am¨¦lie grinned and hopped up, leading Isabelle back downstairs. As they reached the bottom of the stairs, Madeleine stood by the counter arranging a fresh display of lavender and primroses. Spotting the girls, she looked up with a soft but expectant expression.
¡°Am¨¦lie,¡± she called, slipping into French briefly before switching back to English for Isabelle¡¯s sake. ¡°Be back by eight for dinner, oui? Your father will have the stock, and I don¡¯t want it getting cold.¡±
Am¨¦lie rolled her eyes playfully. ¡°Yes, Mom. Eight sharp. We¡¯ll behave, I promise.¡±
Madeleine¡¯s gaze softened as she looked at Isabelle. ¡°You¡¯re welcome here anytime, ch¨¨re. But make sure my daughter doesn¡¯t get you into trouble.¡±
¡°I¡¯ll keep her in line,¡± Isabelle promised, though the attempt at confidence sounded a little wobbly.
Am¨¦lie snorted and tugged Isabelle toward the door. ¡°Keep me in line? You¡¯re hilarious.¡±
As they stepped out of the shop and into the streets, the Neon District was already beginning to wake up¡ªits lights flickering on like stars scattered across steel and glass. The streets thrummed with energy as shops lit up their holographic displays and stalls began opening for the evening crowd.
¡°Three hours to explore,¡± Am¨¦lie said, practically bouncing on her heels as she glanced at the shimmering streets ahead. ¡°Plenty of time to show you the good stuff. C¡¯mon, Isabelle¡ªlet¡¯s see if Lumora can impress you.¡±
Isabelle took in the vibrant lights and busy crowds, her heart beating a little faster. Three hours in this sensory overload? Arceus help me. Still, the flicker of excitement she¡¯d felt earlier returned, this time stronger.
¡°Alright,¡± Isabelle said, managing a grin. ¡°Let¡¯s see what you¡¯ve got.¡±
Chapter 6: Glow Dome, A Beacon of Battles
The Neon District didn¡¯t just glow¡ªit screamed.
Lights exploded across Isabelle¡¯s vision in bursts of electric blue, shocking pink, and pulsating green. Towering holo-screens advertised everything from Pok¨¦Boost Energy Drinks (¡°Fuel your battles, Trainer!¡±) to the newest installment of the Pok¨¦Kart Dash VR series (¡°Race with Flygons now¡ªfeaturing All-New Meteor Mode!¡±). Billboards looped animations of glamorous Trainers tossing designer Pok¨¦Balls, their sparkly teams of Sylveon and Gardevoir practically posing for the camera.
Isabelle stood frozen for a moment at the street corner, feeling like a particularly confused Slowpoke in the middle of a stampede. The ground beneath her buzzed faintly, likely from all the Electrike-powered tech grids running through the streets. People weaved past her with practiced ease: Trainers showing off their VireBands, street performers juggling glowing Pok¨¦Balls, and vendors barking out deals on snacks and rare Pok¨¦mon gear.
Am¨¦lie, who clearly belonged here, turned back when she realized Isabelle had stopped. Her face lit up with a teasing grin. ¡°Well? Pretty different from Verdantia Town, huh?¡±
Isabelle managed a small snort, dragging herself forward. ¡°Different? Try ¡®a whole different planet.¡¯ Do city kids just¡ live in perpetual rave mode?¡±
Am¨¦lie laughed, looping her arm around Isabelle¡¯s and tugging her forward. ¡°C¡¯mon, country girl. You haven¡¯t seen anything yet.¡±
To Isabelle, it felt like stepping into another world. Neon fever dream meets a Kantonian fashion parade, and I¡¯m the country bumpkin gawking at everything. She stayed close to Am¨¦lie, her eyes wide as they took it all in.
Neon light splashed across every surface, reflecting off the polished sidewalks and the sleek windows of sprawling stores that stretched skyward like glass monoliths. Digital billboards towered overhead, displaying trainers in dazzling outfits mid-battle, their Pok¨¦mon rendered in explosive, high-definition detail.
A holo-display floated above the center of the street, showcasing a life-sized Haxorus roaring dramatically, surrounded by promotional graphics for a new HoloBattle Tournament coming to the Glow Dome next month. Kids with glowing VireBands clustered beneath it, pointing and chattering excitedly about entering.
¡°This place is insane,¡± Isabelle muttered under her breath. ¡°It¡¯s like¡ someone took every flashy idea and said, ¡®Yeah, let¡¯s jam all that into one district.¡¯¡±
Am¨¦lie smirked, tugging her along. ¡°Welcome to Lumora City¡¯s Neon District! The brighter, the better¡ªunless you¡¯re broke.¡±
Isabelle chuckled softly, though part of her brain was still reeling. ¡°Do you ever stop and think, ¡®Maybe there¡¯s too much personality here?¡¯ Like, it¡¯s trying too hard?¡±
Am¨¦lie¡¯s grin widened. ¡°It¡¯s supposed to try hard. That¡¯s the point. It¡¯s unapologetic, just like me.¡±
Of course, Am¨¦lie fit here perfectly. She walked with a bounce in her step, her hazel eyes shining brighter than the lights above them. She paused in front of a glass display featuring ¡°Designer Pok¨¦Gear - Fresh from Technogrove City!¡± and made a face. ¡°And this is where it gets ridiculous.¡±
Inside, rows of expensive VireBand cases glimmered like gemstones¡ªeach one covered in metallic accents, decals of Legendary Pok¨¦mon, or animated holo-patterns that rippled as you moved. Isabelle squinted at a price tag.
¡°Who¡¯s paying 3,000 Pok¨¦Dollars for a case?¡± Isabelle blurted, her voice pitching louder than intended.
¡°People with more money than brains,¡± Am¨¦lie replied, deadpan.
Meanwhile, an entire wall of a nearby boutique projected slow-motion footage of a Lopunny strutting down a runway in an absurdly fashionable scarf-and-sunglasses combo. Isabelle blinked. Okay, so we¡¯re doing Pok¨¦Chic for Pok¨¦mon now? Fantastic. The bottom of the ad read: ¡°Now available for 2,500 Pok¨¦Coins or PokePay-approved!¡± A cheerful jingle chimed as the screen switched to the latest luxury Pok¨¦Ball design ¨C something gold-lined and way out of anyone¡¯s budget unless they happened to stumble upon a Nugget farm.
Am¨¦lie noticed her stare and grinned. ¡°If you think that¡¯s pricey, wait until you see the Pok¨¦Yen-exclusive gear stalls. Some people are just obsessed with the high-end labels. Like, why? You¡¯re going to throw that Pok¨¦Ball at a Graveler and pray it doesn¡¯t explode.¡±
Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but snort. ¡°Yeah, I¡¯ll stick to the budget brand. If I can¡¯t tap to pay, I¡¯ll just whip out a handful of Stardust and hope for the best.¡±
¡°Don¡¯t knock Stardust,¡± Am¨¦lie teased. ¡°There are market vendors here who¡¯d trade their left arm for a bag of that stuff. Or at least a really fancy Pok¨¦Doll.¡±
The girls wove through the crowd, passing street stalls where Trainers haggled over vintage Pok¨¦Gear or bartered with Shards and Pearls like they were merchants on a pirate ship. Overhead, neon signs flickered with shop names: ¡°Shiny Shimmer Trinkets,¡± ¡°Evolution Emporium,¡± and ¡°Gadget Grotto.¡± Isabelle couldn¡¯t decide if it was all dazzling or headache-inducing.
Verdantia had two shops. Two. You walked in, bought a MooMoo Milk, and left. This? This was capitalism on Hyper Beam.
The Glow Dome loomed like a glittering monument as Isabelle and Am¨¦lie approached, its curved, neon-lit facade shimmering under the deepening orange hues of the sunset. The sheer size of it left Isabelle gaping; it practically dominated the entire horizon, the glowing lights reflecting off the pavement like molten gemstones.
Crowds bustled around them, a surge of Trainers, families, and fans chattering in excited bursts of energy. People of all ages moved with purpose¡ªsome holding trays of snacks, others toting Trainer bags or Pok¨¦mon plushies, and a few decked out in customized gear representing their favorite Trainers. Their excitement was infectious, even if it also made Isabelle¡¯s head spin.
If chaos had a physical form, it would be this place. Isabelle stayed close to Am¨¦lie as the crowd swept them forward, her grip on her bag strap tightening.
¡°Welcome to the Glow Dome,¡± Am¨¦lie announced with a dramatic sweep of her hand. ¡°The crown jewel of Lumora City. This is it. If something important¡¯s happening, it¡¯s happening here. Battles, tournaments, showcases¡ªyou name it. Some say the Neon District is the soul of Lumora, but this?¡± She gestured upward, the Glow Dome¡¯s towering lights casting her grin in sharp relief. ¡°This is its beating heart.¡±
Isabelle¡¯s mouth twitched as she forced a nod. ¡°Beating heart¡ sure. Feels more like an aneurysm with all these people.¡± Her words were tight, her tone hovering between sarcasm and discomfort. Her brain was already cataloging escape routes. Crowds? Check. Noise? Check. Possible panic attack lurking like a wild Zubat? Triple check.
¡°Me? Freaking out? Nooo. I¡¯m fine.¡± Isabelle¡¯s voice cracked slightly as she lied through gritted teeth, already regretting agreeing to this. ¡°This is¡ great. Love it. So many people. So much noise. Definitely not hyperventilating.¡±
Am¨¦lie¡¯s laughter bubbled up like a sparkling soda. ¡°You¡¯re terrible at lying, you know.¡± She tossed her hair over her shoulder with an easy grin. ¡°It¡¯s not so bad once you get used to it. Think of it as a giant festival¡ªbut with cooler lights and zero clown-themed nightmares.¡±
Before Isabelle could respond with an equally self-deprecating remark, Am¨¦lie¡¯s eyes flicked to someone in the crowd. Her entire demeanor brightened as she elbowed Isabelle lightly. ¡°Hey, look who it is! Milo!¡±
¡°Milo?¡± Isabelle repeated, confused.
¡°From our class, remember? He¡¯s that kid who¡¯s always buried in notes.¡± Am¨¦lie stood on her tiptoes and waved.
Isabelle turned to see a boy slightly off to the side, practically camouflaged among the throng of people. He was perched near a bench, hunched over his VireBand, the sleek device projecting a faint, holographic display into the air. His fingers moved with practiced precision, tapping and swiping through screens filled with battle stats and live match replays. Every so often, he glanced up at the leaderboard projected on one of the Glow Dome¡¯s exterior screens, his light blue eyes narrowing behind his round glasses in focused observation.
The faint glow of the AR features reflected off his lenses, making him look like a tech wizard lost in his own world. His sandy blond hair stuck up in unruly tufts, as if he¡¯d just rolled out of bed and forgotten to comb it, but Isabelle doubted he even noticed. Whatever Milo was analyzing clearly had his full attention.
Who even needs a notebook when you¡¯ve got a VireBand that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi movie? Isabelle thought, feeling like she¡¯d walked in on someone solving a math equation that could end the world.
Am¨¦lie waved her hand dramatically as if summoning a Pok¨¦mon from its Pok¨¦Ball. ¡°Milo! Hey, nerd! What are you doing here?¡±
The boy looked up sharply, his light blue eyes flicking from his VireBand¡¯s holographic interface to Am¨¦lie, then to Isabelle. For a moment, he seemed caught between annoyance at being interrupted and sheepishness at being noticed at all. He pushed up his glasses reflexively, the faint glow of his AR screen still dancing across the lenses.
¡°Spectating,¡± Milo replied simply, his tone as dry as a sandstorm. ¡°And taking notes.¡±
Am¨¦lie dragged Isabelle closer without asking, her grin bright as ever. ¡°Isabelle, meet Milo Tanner. Milo, this is Isabelle Moreau¡ªyou know, the new girl from class.¡±
Isabelle blinked, unsure how to respond. ¡°Uh, hi,¡± she said, lifting her hand in an awkward little wave. She hoped her voice didn¡¯t betray how completely out of place she felt standing in the shadow of the Glow Dome surrounded by strangers.
Milo studied her for a beat¡ªnot rudely, Isabelle noted, but like he was quietly processing her existence. ¡°Hi,¡± he said back, voice flat but not unfriendly. Then he turned his attention to Am¨¦lie, clearly still engrossed in whatever he¡¯d been doing before they showed up. ¡°You¡¯re interrupting my analysis.¡±
Am¨¦lie rolled her eyes with exaggerated flair. ¡°Oh, excuse me for pulling you away from your important nerd work. What¡¯s so fascinating that you can¡¯t even say hello properly?¡±
Milo sighed as if dealing with Am¨¦lie required the patience of a saint, though his faint smirk betrayed a tiny spark of humor. He swiped his hand through the AR display on his VireBand, and a live battle replay flickered to life¡ªa Salamence swooping down with a devastating Dragon Claw on an opposing Talonflame. The attack landed with precision, the Talonflame spiraling out of the air.
¡°I¡¯m studying the matches,¡± Milo said, his voice soft but purposeful. ¡°That¡¯s Colby Ferris¡¯s team¡ªhis Salamence and Heliolisk are dominating this week¡¯s Glow Dome tournament. He¡¯s been on a streak for three weeks now. I¡¯m analyzing his move patterns and team composition.¡±
Am¨¦lie leaned in slightly, her hazel eyes darting toward the AR display. ¡°Is this your idea of fun? Watching Colby say ¡®kerplunk¡¯ fifty times in a row?¡±
¡°His battling strategy is far more interesting than his vocabulary,¡± Milo replied, adjusting his glasses again. He flicked through another screen¡ªlines of data, stats, and diagrams floated in midair, far too dense for Isabelle to process at a glance. ¡°He relies on overwhelming speed and unpredictable move rotations. Most Trainers lose because they try to counter him directly and fall into his traps.¡±
Isabelle blinked, trying to wrap her head around what she was looking at. ¡°Wait, so you¡¯re, like¡ taking notes? On Pok¨¦mon battles? For fun?¡±
Milo turned his gaze back to her, a little surprised but still composed. ¡°Yes. Understanding strategy is the foundation of battling. I want to become a researcher one day¡ªfocused on advanced battle analytics and Pok¨¦mon behavior.¡±
Am¨¦lie poked him teasingly in the arm. ¡°He¡¯s basically a walking battle encyclopedia. Don¡¯t let the quiet vibes fool you¡ªMilo knows everything there is to know about matchups, stats, and move synergy. Seriously, he could probably coach half the Trainers here.¡±
¡°I¡¯m just observing,¡± Milo corrected her, though there was a faint flush of color on his cheeks. ¡°There¡¯s always something to learn if you know where to look.¡±
Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but feel impressed, even if Milo¡¯s intensity was a little intimidating. ¡°That¡¯s¡ cool, I guess,¡± she said slowly, gesturing toward the AR display. ¡°So, what happens if someone actually figures out how to beat Colby? Does his streak end?¡±
As Milo swiped through the AR display on his VireBand, the screen lit up with a slowed replay of Colby Ferris¡¯s latest battle. A massive Salamence dominated the field, its wings spread wide as it soared above a clearly overmatched Talonflame. Colby¡¯s voice blared from the speakers¡ªloud, chaotic, and somehow even more baffling than the visuals.
¡°Yo my mans, we ¡®boutta go KERPLUNK on this scrub! Salamence, hit ¡®em with that slow-motion dive-bomb¡ªy¡¯all see this precision? Stay frisky now! KERPLUNK!¡±
Isabelle stared at the display, her face scrunching as the Salamence swooped down with perfect form, its claws glowing with Dragon Claw. The Talonflame flapped frantically in retreat before getting absolutely smashed out of the sky. A shocked silence hung in the air from the crowd in the video, followed by Colby shouting triumphantly into his mic.
¡°KERPLOOOOOONK! Y¡¯ALL SAW THAT COMIN¡¯? YOU DIDN¡¯T. NO ONE DID. LET¡¯S GO, SALAMENCE! WE MAKIN¡¯ WAVES, MY DUDES!¡±
Milo, unfazed by the chaos, flicked to a new angle¡ªthis time showing Colby mid-victory pose, his backward cap slightly crooked as he flexed a double thumbs-up to his team of Pok¨¦mon, who were less flamboyant but equally victorious. His Heliolisk sparked with electricity, Talonflame preened its singed feathers, and an absolutely massive Conkeldurr hoisted its concrete pillars over one shoulder like they were nothing more than twigs.Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
¡°Is this real life?¡± Isabelle muttered, unable to tear her eyes away from Colby, whose grin was so wide it practically split his face in half. She pointed at the screen, half horrified, half amazed. ¡°Did he just¡ did he just yell ¡®kerplunk¡¯ like it was a legit move?¡±
Am¨¦lie snorted, doubling over as she struggled to contain her laughter. ¡°Oh, Isabelle. Welcome to Colby Ferris. The guy¡¯s been Glow Dome¡¯s reigning champ for three weeks, and no one has a clue what he¡¯s talking about half the time.¡±
¡°I¡ªwhat¡ªhow?¡± Isabelle stammered, gesturing wildly at the screen. ¡°Is this a battle, or did someone let a Chatot hyped up on Rare Candies take over the mic?¡±
Milo ignored them both, his fingers gliding across the VireBand as he zoomed in on another clip. ¡°Say what you want about his vocabulary, but his team is solid. Watch the way he rotates between Salamence and Heliolisk.¡±
The screen switched to another replay¡ªthis time, Colby¡¯s Heliolisk zipped across the field, its frill crackling with electricity as it dodged an incoming Thunderbolt. From the side of the screen, Colby¡¯s unmistakable voice boomed again, his enthusiasm unfiltered.
¡°HELIO! LET¡¯S DODGE ¡®N ZAP, BABY! SWERVE IT LIKE A MILTANK IN A FIELD OF MOOMOOS!¡±
Am¨¦lie cackled, clutching her side. ¡°Like a Miltank in a what? I can¡¯t¡ªhe¡¯s ridiculous.¡±
Even Milo sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. ¡°I¡¯ll admit, his phrasing is¡ unorthodox. But focus on his Heliolisk¡¯s movement. It¡¯s exploiting its speed and Electric Terrain perfectly. Most Trainers can¡¯t keep up.¡±
The Heliolisk skidded to a halt, its frill glowing brighter than ever before it unleashed a devastating Thunderbolt that struck a Gyarados dead-center. The Gyarados roared and collapsed in a heap, fainted in a single hit.
¡°KERPLOOOOONK!¡± Colby¡¯s triumphant yell rang through the replay again, his voice shrill with excitement. ¡°YA LOVE TO SEE IT! MY BOY HELIO OUT HERE MAKIN¡¯ IT LOOK EASY!¡±
Isabelle clapped her hands over her ears in mock agony. ¡°I cannot deal with this guy. He sounds like he inhaled three gallons of coffee before every match.¡±
¡°Three?¡± Am¨¦lie chimed in. ¡°More like six. And chased it with a triple-shot espresso.¡±
Milo shot them both a look, as though personally offended they weren¡¯t taking this seriously. ¡°You¡¯re missing the point. He¡¯s chaotic, yes, but it works for him. He throws opponents off their game because they underestimate him. Look at this.¡±
Another battle flickered to life. Colby¡¯s Conkeldurr faced down a Steelix, towering over its opponent despite the intimidating type disadvantage. Steelix loomed with glowing eyes, its massive metallic body curled like a wall of destruction. Colby¡¯s strategy, however, was anything but conventional.
¡°Yo, Conkeldurr! LET¡¯S GET THAT EARTHQUAKE MOVIN¡¯! SHAKE IT LIKE A JIGGLYPUFF AT A DISCO!¡±
The Conkeldurr grunted, slamming its concrete pillars into the ground with enough force to create cracks across the battlefield. The Steelix, caught off guard, wavered just long enough for the arena to shift. Seconds later, Colby shouted again.
¡°FINISH IT! DYNAMIC PUNCH¡ªFULL KERPLOOOOONK MODE!¡±
The Conkeldurr charged forward, its fist glowing with brutal energy before it swung, landing a devastating Dynamic Punch. The Steelix toppled over, crashing into the arena floor as the crowd erupted in wild cheers.
Isabelle stared at the display, equal parts horrified and impressed. ¡°That worked? That actually worked? I¡¯m so mad right now.¡±
Am¨¦lie wiped tears from her eyes, still laughing. ¡°And that¡¯s why he¡¯s the Glow Dome champion three weeks running. You don¡¯t know whether to cringe or cheer.¡±
¡°I¡¯m leaning heavily toward cringe,¡± Isabelle deadpanned, though a reluctant smirk tugged at her lips. ¡°I feel like my brain just short-circuited from listening to him. What does ¡®full kerplunk mode¡¯ even mean?¡±
Milo turned off the AR display with a flick of his wrist, his expression unwavering. ¡°It means he¡¯s winning. That¡¯s all that matters.¡±
The Glow Dome loomed like a glittering monument as Isabelle, Am¨¦lie, and Milo made their way through its neon-lit corridors. The air buzzed with energy, filled with the chatter of Trainers, fans, and families weaving between concession stands and souvenir shops. Holographic screens projected live stats, replays of battles, and advertisements for everything from exclusive battle gear to glow-in-the-dark Pok¨¦Ball decals.
The main lobby was an intricate web of sleek, futuristic design, its polished floors reflecting the neon glow from above. Arches of shifting light created pathways, guiding people toward different areas of the arena. Isabelle barely had time to process the visual overload as Am¨¦lie steered her toward a glowing counter marked "Spectator Registration."
¡°We need bands to get into the main arena,¡± Am¨¦lie explained, her voice brimming with excitement. ¡°They track where you¡¯re sitting and block you from wandering into VIP zones unless you¡¯re allowed. It¡¯s Glow Dome policy.¡±
¡°Great,¡± Isabelle muttered, her sarcasm sharp. ¡°Can¡¯t wait to strap on my official tracking device.¡±
Milo glanced at her, mildly amused. ¡°It¡¯s not a tracking device. It¡¯s for security and crowd management. They¡¯re practical.¡±
¡°They¡¯re invasive,¡± Isabelle shot back, but Am¨¦lie was already dragging her to the counter.
The attendant greeted them with a rehearsed smile. ¡°Welcome to the Glow Dome! Please scan your VireBands or Trainer IDs to register.¡±
Am¨¦lie tapped her VireBand against the scanner first, the device lighting up with a soft chime. The attendant handed her a sleek bracelet, its faint glow matching the orange highlights of her VireBand. ¡°You¡¯re all set! Section C, row 8.¡±
Milo went next, his VireBand displaying a series of data streams as it synced with the system. He received a navy-blue bracelet with a quiet ¡°Thank you for registering.¡±
Isabelle hesitated before stepping up. She tapped her VireBand, the scanner lighting up with a soft beep. Moments later, the attendant handed her a bracelet glowing in faint lavender¡ªmatching her VireBand. ¡°Section C, row 9. Enjoy the matches!¡±
As they headed toward their section, Isabelle stared at the bracelet on her wrist, her thoughts bubbling. Great. Now I¡¯m officially tagged like a Mareep in a herd. Progress.
The Glow Dome buzzed with anticipation, the energy in the air almost electric as fans packed into the stands. The arena was a dazzling spectacle, the dynamic terrains below flickering through holographic simulations¡ªcraggy cliffs, dense forests, shimmering lakes¡ªbefore settling back into a neutral state. Above, massive screens displayed live feeds, stats, and commentary, ensuring that no one missed a moment of the action.
Isabelle, Am¨¦lie, and Milo had settled into their seats, their special Glow Dome spectator bracelets glowing faintly with their section colors. The roar of the crowd was deafening, making Isabelle¡¯s heart pound faster with every passing second.
Am¨¦lie leaned toward Isabelle, her voice raised over the noise. ¡°Get ready. They¡¯re introducing Colby first.¡±
¡°Kerplunk guy?¡± Isabelle asked, her tone drenched in disbelief. ¡°Fantastic. Can¡¯t wait to hear his wisdom.¡±
Am¨¦lie laughed, but Milo shushed them both, his focus razor-sharp on the stage below. Isabelle raised an eyebrow at him, but he didn¡¯t notice¡ªhe was already pulling up stats on his VireBand, the AR display flickering softly in the dim lighting.
¡°Ladies and gentlemen!¡± boomed the voice of Felix Sparks, the Glow Dome¡¯s charismatic announcer. His silver hair and flashy neon blazer lit up the central screen as he gestured theatrically. ¡°It¡¯s time to introduce one of today¡¯s challengers¡ªa Trainer who¡¯s been tearing up the Glow Dome with three consecutive weekly wins. Give it up for your reigning champion¡ Colby Ferris!¡±
The crowd erupted into a frenzy as the stadium lights dimmed, casting an electric glow toward the far side of the arena. The heavy bassline of a custom beat thumped through the speakers, and the door slid open with a hiss of smoke and neon light. Out strutted Colby Ferris, his sideways cap practically defying gravity and his oversized hoodie pulsing with faint LED patterns that shifted from fiery red to electric blue. He moved with a swagger that screamed confidence, one hand casually flipping a Pok¨¦Ball, the other pointing dramatically to the sky.
Behind him, Salamence emerged from the mist, its wings flexing wide as it let out a low, guttural growl. The dragon¡¯s scales shimmered in the stadium lights, giving it an almost otherworldly glow as it stalked behind its Trainer.
Colby¡¯s mic crackled to life, his words hitting the Dome like a Thunderbolt. ¡°Yo, yo, yo! Glow Dome, ya feel that buzz? ¡®Cause we ¡®boutta KERPLUNK this place into the stratosphere!¡± He spun the Pok¨¦Ball on his finger like a seasoned juggler before catching it mid-air with a flourish. ¡°Stay frisky, stay risky! Salamence, it¡¯s time to flex¡ªlet¡¯s go, baby! KERPLUNK!¡±
The crowd roared in response, the energy contagious as Colby strode confidently toward his side of the battlefield, Salamence prowling at his heels. His mic cut out for a moment, but his exaggerated gestures and constant energy made it clear: this wasn¡¯t just a battle¡ªit was a performance.
Isabelle groaned audibly. ¡°I can¡¯t. This guy. What is he even saying?¡±
Milo didn¡¯t even look up from his notes. ¡°Ignore the personality. His team coordination is exceptional.¡±
¡°Exceptional?¡± Isabelle repeated, pointing at the screen. ¡°He just said ¡®stay frisky.¡¯ Are we watching the same match?¡±
Am¨¦lie couldn¡¯t stop laughing. ¡°Welcome to Colby Ferris, Isabelle. You either love him, hate him, or both.¡±
¡°Yo, crowd, keep that energy goin¡¯!¡± Colby continued, gesturing wildly as he crossed the walkway. ¡°We ¡®bout to hit full KERPLOOOONK mode! Salamence, you ready to light this place up?¡±
Salamence let out a deep, rumbling roar, and the crowd went wild. Isabelle covered her ears, wincing. ¡°Is there a volume setting for this guy? Or a mute button?¡±
Milo, engrossed in his VireBand, spoke without looking up. ¡°Say what you will about his personality, but his strategy is solid. He doesn¡¯t just rely on brute force; he uses unpredictability to keep his opponents off balance.¡±
¡°Sure,¡± Isabelle said flatly, pointing at the screen. ¡°That guy? A tactical genius? Look at him.¡±
Colby paused mid-walk to strike a double thumbs-up pose for the cameras, his Salamence gliding overhead. ¡°Let¡¯s make it happen, fam! KERPLOOOOONK!¡±
Am¨¦lie laughed so hard she nearly fell out of her seat. ¡°Okay, but tell me that isn¡¯t entertaining.¡±
Isabelle sighed. ¡°Entertaining like watching a slow-motion train wreck, maybe.¡±
Milo finally looked up, his expression serious. ¡°He¡¯s flashy, but it works. His opponents underestimate him because of his antics. That¡¯s why he¡¯s been winning.¡±
Felix Sparks¡¯s voice boomed again, the spotlight shifting to the other side of the stadium. ¡°And now, his challenger¡ a name some of you might recognize. After two years away from the competitive scene, he¡¯s back to make waves in Lumora City! Give it up for¡ Veyron Lux!¡±
The crowd¡¯s energy changed instantly. The deafening cheers that had been roaring for Colby moments ago were swallowed by a strange ripple¡ªwhispers of recognition and awe spreading like wildfire. It was as though someone had flipped a switch, transforming the atmosphere into something charged, weighty, and oddly reverent. Isabelle froze, the shift so stark it sent a chill down her spine.
What the fuck? Isabelle¡¯s internal monologue stumbled to catch up with reality. She could feel it¡ªsomething unspoken settling over the crowd, heavier than the noise it replaced.
Am¨¦lie shot to her feet, gripping the rail of their section with both hands, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief. ¡°No way,¡± she blurted out, her voice cutting through the murmurs around them. ¡°What is he doing here?¡±
Isabelle blinked, glancing between Am¨¦lie and the stage, her confusion mounting. ¡°Wait, who¡¯s he?¡± she asked, but Am¨¦lie ignored her, her attention laser-focused on the figure stepping onto the walkway.
Milo, seated on Isabelle¡¯s other side, adjusted his glasses with a sharp, deliberate motion. The faint glow from his VireBand reflected off his lenses as he leaned slightly forward, his analytical focus shifting into overdrive. ¡°That¡¯s Veyron Lux,¡± he said softly, almost as if speaking the name too loudly would break some unspoken rule. ¡°The Silent Strategist.¡±
¡°The what strategist?¡± Isabelle asked, feeling more lost by the second. Her gaze flicked back to the stage, where a man had stepped into the spotlight, his presence cutting through the Dome¡¯s atmosphere like a blade.
Veyron Lux moved with the kind of confidence that wasn¡¯t loud or showy¡ªit was sharp, precise, and utterly unshakable. His tailored navy suit caught the light in a subtle sheen, the silver accents along the cuffs and lapels shimmering faintly with each step. Designer sunglasses obscured his eyes, but his expression¡ªor lack thereof¡ªsaid everything. He carried himself as if the world bent to his will without him needing to demand it.
The crowd didn¡¯t just react¡ªthey adjusted to him. Cheers turned to murmurs, awe replacing excitement. Even Colby Ferris, halfway across the arena, seemed to falter slightly in his exaggerated stride, Salamence pausing mid-step as if sensing the shift.
¡°Seriously,¡± Isabelle whispered, her voice low but urgent as she turned to Milo. ¡°What¡¯s happening? Did everyone suddenly forget how to breathe?¡±
Milo pushed his glasses further up the bridge of his nose, his gaze unwavering. ¡°Veyron Lux is one of the most talented Trainers the League Circuit has ever seen. Two years ago, he made it all the way to the final eight. People called him a prodigy. Then, out of nowhere, he disappeared from the Circuit entirely.¡±
¡°He disappeared?¡± Isabelle asked, frowning. ¡°Why?¡±
¡°No one knows,¡± Milo replied, his tone laced with curiosity. ¡°That¡¯s part of why his recent appearances here at the Glow Dome are so strange. Someone of his caliber doesn¡¯t usually compete in places like this.¡±
Am¨¦lie scoffed, her grip on the railing tightening. ¡°Of course he¡¯s here. The Glow Dome¡¯s been hyping him up for weeks¡ª¡®Silent Strategist¡¯ this, ¡®Unstoppable Comeback¡¯ that. It¡¯s like they¡¯re determined to make everyone forget what a smug ass he was back on the Circuit.¡±
¡°Wait, you know him?¡± Isabelle asked, turning to Am¨¦lie, who hadn¡¯t taken her eyes off Veyron.
¡°Oh, I know him,¡± Am¨¦lie said, her voice dripping with bitterness. ¡°He¡¯s the guy who destroyed my brother in the League Circuit two years ago. Didn¡¯t even break a sweat. And now he¡¯s slumming it here for whatever reason.¡±
Destroyed her brother? Isabelle blinked, trying to piece it together. What is it with this guy? she thought, her fingers curling into her jacket. Why does it feel like he knows something none of us do? ¡°So¡ he¡¯s good?¡±
Am¨¦lie whipped her head around, giving Isabelle a look that was almost incredulous. ¡°Good? He¡¯s terrifying. He doesn¡¯t make mistakes. Not even little ones. It¡¯s like he sees five moves ahead while you¡¯re still deciding your first.¡±
Isabelle turned her attention back to Veyron, who had reached his side of the battlefield. He paused just before stepping onto the arena floor, adjusting his sunglasses with an almost dismissive gesture. His Gallade stood at his side, its elegant frame and glowing blades as poised and sharp as its Trainer.
¡°And he¡¯s just¡ back now?¡± Isabelle muttered, her voice tinged with confusion. Something about the way Veyron carried himself tugged at her¡ªlike gravity, pulling her attention whether she wanted it or not. It wasn¡¯t just the shift in the crowd, or Am¨¦lie¡¯s visible frustration, or even Milo¡¯s calculated interest. It was him. He exuded something she couldn¡¯t quite name, but it stirred an uncomfortable knot in her chest. A mix of awe, curiosity, and something else she didn¡¯t want to examine too closely.
¡°Why does it feel like everyone here knows some big secret, and I missed the memo?¡± Isabelle whispered under her breath. She crossed her arms, trying to ground herself against the growing unease creeping into her thoughts. Focus. He¡¯s just a guy in a suit with good Pok¨¦mon. That¡¯s it. Get a grip.
The announcer, Felix Sparks, broke through her spiraling thoughts, his voice booming across the Dome with renewed excitement. ¡°And now, Trainers and spectators alike, prepare yourselves for an epic showdown! In one corner, our reigning Glow Dome champion, the unpredictable and electrifying Colby Ferris!¡±
The crowd roared as Colby struck another pose, his Salamence letting out a guttural roar.
¡°And in the other corner,¡± Felix continued, the energy in his voice shifting to something more serious, almost reverent, ¡°the strategist who needs no introduction¡ªmaking his long-awaited return to the battlefield¡ Veyron Lux!¡±
The crowd¡¯s reaction was immediate and unanimous: a mix of awe, reverence, and raw anticipation. Isabelle stiffened, her eyes locked on Veyron as he stepped forward. He didn¡¯t pose, didn¡¯t smile, didn¡¯t even acknowledge the crowd. He just walked to his position, each step deliberate and unhurried. He didn¡¯t demand attention¡ªit was given freely, as if the air around him carried its own gravity.
Am¨¦lie muttered something under her breath in French, her knuckles white against the railing. Milo¡¯s fingers hovered over his VireBand, his focus razor-sharp. Isabelle, meanwhile, slouched slightly in her seat, trying to make sense of the strange pull she felt toward the man standing on the battlefield.
Just a guy with good Pok¨¦mon, she told herself again. Yeah, keep telling yourself that.
Chapter 7: The Glow Dome Showdown
The holographic displays around the Glow Dome flickered to life, casting an eerie glow over the volcanic battlefield. The audience hushed momentarily as the arena lights dimmed, drawing all attention to the massive screens overhead. Rules scrolled across the screens in bold, glowing letters, accompanied by Felix Sparks¡¯ trademark dramatic narration.
¡°Ladies and gentlemen, tonight¡¯s battle will be a Double Battle!¡± Sparks announced, his voice amplified through the stadium speakers. ¡°Each Trainer will select four Pok¨¦mon from their team of six, with two on the field at any given time. The last team standing will claim victory! Rules are simple: no duplicate Pok¨¦mon, no duplicate items, and¡ªof course¡ªno mercy!¡±
The audience erupted into cheers, the anticipation rippling through the crowd like static electricity. Isabelle felt the vibrations in her seat, her fingers clenching her bag strap.
The arena¡¯s terrain generator whirred to life, the circular battlefield transforming with impressive precision. Jagged, obsidian-like rocks jutted out from the simulated ground, while molten magma pools bubbled ominously, radiating holographic heat. Smoke and steam hissed, creating an atmosphere both foreboding and thrilling.
¡°Oh, this is gonna be good,¡± Am¨¦lie whispered, leaning forward in her seat. Her eyes sparkled with excitement. ¡°Volcanic terrain is brutal. One wrong move, and you¡¯re toast.¡±
Milo adjusted his glasses, his VireBand already glowing as he pulled up battle data. ¡°This terrain heavily favors Pok¨¦mon with mobility and elemental resistance. If Veyron plays defensively, he could stall out Colby¡¯s momentum, but¡ª¡±
¡°If Veyron plays defensively?¡± Am¨¦lie cut in, her tone laced with annoyance. ¡°Let¡¯s not pretend guys like him don¡¯t already have every angle mapped out.¡±
Isabelle tilted her head, watching Am¨¦lie¡¯s scowl deepen. ¡°You really don¡¯t like him, do you?¡±
Am¨¦lie huffed, crossing her arms. ¡°He¡¯s smug, calculated, and acts like he¡¯s untouchable. Just because he¡¯s good doesn¡¯t mean I have to like him.¡± She hesitated, her tone softening as her fingers drummed the rail in front of her. ¡°Besides, people like that always leave. No matter how good they are.¡±
Isabelle blinked, unsure what to say to that. Milo, meanwhile, ignored the exchange entirely, engrossed in his data.
The volcanic terrain glowed with simulated heat, giving the battlefield an ominous, dangerous allure. Felix Sparks leaned into the microphone, his voice booming with uncontainable energy.
¡°Trainers, release your Pok¨¦mon! Let the battle... begin!¡±
Colby¡¯s grin stretched wide as he tossed two Pok¨¦Balls into the air with a theatrical flourish. ¡°Alright, fams! Time to razzle, dazzle, and KERPLUNK these fools! Heliolisk, Talonflame¡ªlet¡¯s light it up!¡±
The twin flashes of light revealed Colby¡¯s chosen starters. Heliolisk landed gracefully, its frills sparking with vibrant electricity as it sized up the battlefield. Beside it, Talonflame took to the air, its wings trailing fiery embers that lit up the space around it.
¡°Yo, Heliolisk, keep that energy frisky! Talonflame, show ¡®em some air-style flair!¡± Colby called out, his chaotic energy already infecting the crowd.
Isabelle blinked. ¡°Air-style flair? Did he just make that up on the spot?¡±
Am¨¦lie groaned. ¡°That¡¯s Colby for you. His battling strategy is one part chaos, one part talent, and three parts headache.¡±
Milo adjusted his glasses, his attention laser-focused on the field. ¡°It¡¯s effective. Heliolisk acts as a pivot with Volt Switch, boosting its power before swapping out. Talonflame capitalizes on speed and flashy strikes to disorient opponents.¡±
The announcer chimed in with theatrical gusto. ¡°And here we have Colby¡¯s opening duo¡ªHeliolisk, the electrifying speedster, and Talonflame, the fiery ace! Can they maintain their winning streak, or will tonight be the end of the road?¡±
On the other side of the field, Veyron Lux barely moved. His cool, unbothered demeanor contrasted starkly with Colby¡¯s over-the-top theatrics. Without a word, he tossed two Pok¨¦Balls into the air.
From the flashes of light emerged a sleek Serperior and a menacing Toxapex. Serperior¡¯s coiled, emerald-green body shimmered under the volcanic glow, its regal posture radiating control. Toxapex, meanwhile, exuded an aura of quiet menace, its spiked form gleaming ominously as it took its defensive stance.
Felix Sparks wasted no time hyping up the crowd. ¡°And on Veyron¡¯s side¡ªSerperior, the elegant serpent of strategy, and Toxapex, the defensive powerhouse! What a team! What a clash! Are you ready, Lumora City?¡±
The stadium shook with cheers, but Veyron remained composed. His lips moved just enough to utter a single word: ¡°Begin.¡±
¡°Y¡¯know, Talonflame, we ¡®boutta hit ¡®em wit¡¯ that turbo-glide scorch play, feel me? Flip the board, spin the flame, and ZWOOP on by!¡± Colby hollered, gesturing wildly at the field like he was conducting a chaotic orchestra. Talonflame¡¯s wings blurred into a fiery blur, streaking across the volcanic battlefield with erratic grace, flames licking at the jagged terrain.
¡°Heliolisk!¡± Colby bellowed, his grin growing wider, his voice somehow both nonsensical and commanding. ¡°Crank the juice, zap that pincushion back to the Stone Age, then skedaddle! It¡¯s all pivots, all sparks, no brakes, ya dig?¡±
Heliolisk responded with a sharp nod, electricity crackling across its frills as it released a sizzling Volt Switch directly at Toxapex. The energy arced through the air, hitting the defensive Pok¨¦mon squarely. But Toxapex, as steady as a rock, didn¡¯t flinch. The electricity fizzled against its tough exterior, leaving it virtually untouched. Heliolisk darted back to Colby¡¯s side in a flash of light, disappearing into its Pok¨¦Ball.
¡°Yeah, baby! Zappin¡¯ ¡®em and tappin¡¯ out! Now it¡¯s time for the main event!¡± Colby whooped, throwing another Pok¨¦Ball with a flourish. ¡°Salamence, roll up, big dog! Bring that air flex and drop jaws!¡±
The crowd exploded as Salamence roared onto the field, its presence immediately filling the arena with palpable intensity. The dragon¡¯s scales shimmered like molten metal under the simulated volcanic glow, its wings casting intimidating shadows as it loomed over the terrain.
¡°Salamence!¡± Colby called, his voice dropping into an almost unintelligible rhythm. ¡°Flex ya wings, flex ya claws, we goin¡¯ primal time! Ain¡¯t no slinkin¡¯, ain¡¯t no stinkin¡¯¡ªwe toppin¡¯ charts, shakin¡¯ parts!¡±
Milo adjusted his glasses, leaning slightly forward. ¡°He¡¯s distracting. That¡¯s part of his strategy¡ªkeep his opponent second-guessing by acting completely unhinged. It¡¯s not as sloppy as it looks.¡±
Am¨¦lie groaned, her fingers gripping the railing. ¡°It¡¯s exactly as sloppy as it looks. But somehow, it works. I swear, if he says ¡®kerplunk¡¯ one more time, I¡¯m walking out.¡±
¡°Serperior, Leaf Storm,¡± Veyron said simply, his voice barely rising above the din of the crowd.
The elegant serpent coiled tightly before unleashing a whirlwind of glowing leaves. The attack tore through the air with surgical precision, aimed directly at Salamence¡¯s hulking form. Salamence growled, flapping its massive wings to stabilize against the onslaught.
¡°Toxapex, Baneful Bunker,¡± Veyron added, his voice calm and detached.
Toxapex braced itself, retracting into its spiny shell just as Talonflame dove in with Flame Charge. The fiery bird collided with the toxic shield, releasing a plume of purple mist that enveloped it. Talonflame screeched, faltering in the air as the poison seeped through its system.
Felix Sparks jumped in with his signature flair. ¡°Ladies and gentlemen, this is the beauty of high-stakes battling! Veyron¡¯s Toxapex turns Talonflame¡¯s aggression into its own undoing! Can Colby pivot back, or will this field become a chessboard for the Silent Strategist?¡±
The crowd erupted in cheers and gasps, the energy of the Glow Dome reaching a fever pitch. Isabelle felt her chest tighten as she tried to take it all in. Her eyes flicked between Colby¡¯s frenetic commands and Veyron¡¯s calm precision, a stark contrast that seemed to define the entire battle.
Why does this feel like more than just a match? Isabelle wondered, gripping her bag strap tighter.
¡°Salamence!¡± Colby hollered, his tone wild. ¡°We ain¡¯t playin¡¯ no slow-mo charades! Light ¡®em up with that hyper-roar zap twist, ya heard? Talonflame, backup wit¡¯ the loop-de-loop blaze strike!¡±
Milo¡¯s brow furrowed as he scribbled on his VireBand¡¯s holographic display. ¡°Salamence is trying to set up for a sweep, but Veyron isn¡¯t giving him the space. Toxapex is locking down the field, and Serperior¡¯s keeping him on the defensive.¡±
Am¨¦lie crossed her arms, her frustration evident. ¡°It¡¯s not just about his strategy. He¡¯s playing with Colby¡¯s tempo¡ªmaking him rush, forcing those flashy moves.¡±
¡°Serperior, Glare,¡± Veyron said, his tone as steady as ever.
Serperior¡¯s golden eyes gleamed as it locked its gaze onto Salamence. The dragon faltered mid-movement, its body stiffening as the paralysis took hold. Meanwhile, Toxapex released a targeted Scald, the steaming jet of water dousing Talonflame and sending it tumbling back.
Felix Sparks leaned forward dramatically. ¡°And there it is! Veyron¡¯s Glare neutralizes Salamence¡¯s momentum, while Toxapex punishes Talonflame for overcommitting. This is strategy at its finest, folks!¡±
Am¨¦lie exhaled sharply. ¡°Okay, fine. That was impressive.¡±
¡°Fine?¡± Isabelle echoed, side-eyeing her friend. ¡°You look like you¡¯re about to give him a standing ovation.¡±
Am¨¦lie glared at Isabelle but couldn¡¯t hide the faint smirk tugging at her lips. ¡°Shut up.¡±
Isabelle shrugged, her attention returning to the field. Veyron¡¯s silence, his minimal movements, the way his Pok¨¦mon executed his commands flawlessly¡ªit was captivating in a way she couldn¡¯t explain.
As the battle pressed on, Colby¡¯s chaotic energy only seemed to heighten. ¡°Aight, y¡¯all! Let¡¯s flip the script and double down! Salamence, Dragon Claw! Talonflame, you got one more in ya¡ªBrave Bird time, fam!¡±
Talonflame let out a strained cry, its wings faltering as the toxic energy coursing through its body finally overtook it. It collapsed onto the rocky terrain, flames flickering weakly before extinguishing. Felix Sparks¡¯s voice boomed across the arena.Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings.
¡°Talonflame is down! The poison proves too much, and Colby is now down to three! Can he turn the tides with Salamence and Heliolisk, or will Veyron¡¯s stoic defense keep holding firm?¡±
The crowd erupted into a mix of cheers and murmurs. Colby gritted his teeth, but his ever-present grin didn¡¯t falter. ¡°Alright, alright, I see ya! My boy Talon got clapped, but we ain¡¯t done dancin¡¯ yet. Helio, let¡¯s crank it up!¡±
Heliolisk leapt back into the fray, sparks crackling along its frills. Salamence roared beside it, wings beating powerfully as it prepared to take flight once more.
¡°Serperior, Leaf Storm,¡± Veyron said, his voice calm and measured.
The grass serpent coiled before releasing another hurricane of glowing leaves. Heliolisk dodged, barely avoiding the brunt of the storm, while Salamence took a direct hit. The dragon staggered, clearly worn down but still standing strong.
¡°Toxapex, Recover,¡± Veyron added.
Toxapex pulsed with a soft glow, its spiny body regenerating as it fortified its position. The battle dragged on, Veyron¡¯s Pok¨¦mon refusing to falter despite Colby¡¯s relentless offensive. Heliolisk darted across the battlefield, delivering sharp Thunderbolts, while Salamence unleashed its Dragon Pulse, but Serperior¡¯s agility and Toxapex¡¯s impenetrable defenses made them near-impossible to break.
Eventually, after a grueling exchange, both Heliolisk and Salamence succumbed to their injuries, fainting almost simultaneously. The referee raised both flags, signaling their defeat.
¡°And that¡¯s it for Heliolisk and Salamence!¡± Felix Sparks roared. ¡°What a grueling bout! Veyron¡¯s defense is a masterclass in endurance. And now, Colby is down to his final Pok¨¦mon¡ªhis powerhouse, Conkeldurr!¡±
The crowd roared in anticipation as Colby grinned, pulling out his last Pok¨¦Ball. ¡°Aight, my dude. Let¡¯s get this bread! Conkeldurr, my ace, my main man¡ªshow ¡®em how we get it done!¡±
With a flash of light, Conkeldurr emerged, its massive concrete beams crashing onto the battlefield with a resounding thud. It flexed its massive arms, letting out a guttural roar that sent vibrations through the arena.
Am¨¦lie groaned loudly, gripping the railing. ¡°Ugh, the dramatics. It¡¯s always the same with these guys. Just finish the fight already.¡±
But Veyron surprised everyone. He raised both Pok¨¦Balls simultaneously, recalling Serperior and Toxapex in a flash of red light. Gallade, who had been standing silently at his side throughout the entire match, stepped forward onto the battlefield.
The crowd¡¯s noise fell to a low murmur, confusion rippling through the stands.
¡°What¡¯s he doing?¡± Isabelle asked, leaning toward Milo. ¡°Doesn¡¯t this put him at a disadvantage?¡±
Milo adjusted his glasses, his tone thoughtful. ¡°Not necessarily. Gallade is his strongest Pok¨¦mon, and one-on-one battles are where it shines. It¡¯s a statement¡ªa show of confidence.¡±
Am¨¦lie rolled her eyes. ¡°It¡¯s overkill, is what it is. Colby¡¯s down to one Pok¨¦mon. There¡¯s no need for all this flair.¡±
But Isabelle couldn¡¯t shake the strange feeling that Veyron¡¯s actions weren¡¯t about theatrics. It felt deliberate, almost personal, as though he was honoring the battle itself.
Felix Sparks, oblivious to the undercurrents, hyped the crowd once more. ¡°And there you have it, folks! Veyron Lux, the Silent Strategist, is setting the stage for an epic one-on-one finale! Gallade versus Conkeldurr¡ªbrains versus brawn! This is going to be a battle for the ages!¡±
Colby clapped his hands together, his grin widening. ¡°Aight, Conk, you know what to do! Bulk up and show this dude why we¡¯re the Glow Dome¡¯s reigning champs!¡±
Conkeldurr flexed its massive arms, its muscles bulging as its power surged. The crowd roared in approval as it slammed one of its concrete beams into the ground, shaking the battlefield.
Veyron, as calm as ever, gave a single command. ¡°Gallade, advance.¡±
The graceful Pok¨¦mon moved forward, its blade-like arms glowing faintly. Conkeldurr charged, swinging one of its beams in a wide arc. The clash that followed was nothing short of cinematic. Gallade ducked and weaved with fluid precision, its movements like a dance as it deflected the heavy strikes with its blades.
¡°Gallade, Leaf Combat,¡± Veyron said, his tone almost casual.
Gallade''s arms shimmered an intense emerald green as the energy of Leaf Blade seamlessly melded with the raw, relentless strikes of Close Combat. The crowd gasped as one, the arena falling into a near-silent awe broken only by the clash of blades against stone. The fusion of techniques wasn¡¯t just an attack¡ªit was art. Each movement was a fluid dance, the perfect balance of offensive precision and defensive agility. Gallade''s strikes carved glowing arcs into the air, emerald leaves trailing like an ethereal storm in its wake.
Conkeldurr swung its massive concrete beams with the force of a wrecking ball, the sheer weight of its attacks shaking the battlefield. But Gallade was too fast, its movements calculated to the millisecond. Every swing was met with a parry or a deft sidestep, leaving Conkeldurr¡¯s strikes to crash harmlessly into the volcanic terrain.
From the stands, Isabelle¡¯s mouth fell open. ¡°What¡ the fuck?¡± she muttered, the words slipping out before she could stop herself. Her voice was barely audible above the clamor, but Milo turned his head sharply, his expression as focused as Gallade¡¯s movements below.
¡°That,¡± he said, almost reverently, ¡°is a fusion move. I¡¯ve only ever read about them. They¡¯re not just rare¡ªthey¡¯re practically mythic in battle mechanics.¡±
Isabelle tore her eyes from the fight, looking at Milo as if he¡¯d just told her Arceus was refereeing. ¡°Fusion move? What even is that?¡±
Milo adjusted his glasses, his tone slipping into the careful cadence of a seasoned academic. ¡°Fusion moves combine the principles of two distinct attacks, blending their properties into a single, cohesive technique. It¡¯s not just about teaching a Pok¨¦mon two moves¡ªit¡¯s about perfecting the synergy between them.¡±
Isabelle blinked, her thoughts racing. ¡°But that doesn¡¯t sound¡ possible? How does that even work?¡±
Milo leaned forward, gesturing toward the battlefield. ¡°It¡¯s a feat of unparalleled training. The Trainer and Pok¨¦mon need to share an almost psychic bond, and the Pok¨¦mon must have complete mastery over both moves individually. Then, through practice and trust, they learn to execute them as one. Most Trainers don¡¯t even attempt it¡ªit¡¯s that hard to pull off.¡±
Am¨¦lie crossed her arms, trying to mask her intrigue with an exaggerated scoff. ¡°Yeah, well, it¡¯s still extra. No one needs to pull fancy stunts like that to win a battle.¡±
Milo glanced at her, undeterred. ¡°It¡¯s not just about winning. Fusion moves represent the pinnacle of strategy and understanding between a Trainer and their Pok¨¦mon. They¡¯re as much a statement as they are a tactic.¡±
Am¨¦lie rolled her eyes but didn¡¯t retort, her gaze betraying her grudging admiration for what she was seeing. Isabelle, meanwhile, returned her attention to the field, her thoughts a storm of confusion and awe. How the hell does someone even come up with this stuff?
On the battlefield, Gallade continued its relentless assault. Its Leaf Combat strikes sliced through the air, glowing leaves scattering like embers in the volcanic terrain. The sheer force of the attack drove Conkeldurr to its knees, the massive Pok¨¦mon panting heavily as it struggled to keep up.
The crowd¡¯s murmurs turned to open cheers, and Isabelle felt the weight of the moment pressing down on her. This wasn¡¯t just a battle¡ªit was a performance, a display of unparalleled skill and discipline. And yet, Veyron stood there, silent and calm, his gaze steady and his posture relaxed.
From the corner of her eye, Isabelle noticed Milo still watching intently, his analytical mind undoubtedly dissecting every movement. ¡°Fusion moves aren¡¯t just about power,¡± he added quietly, almost as if speaking to himself. ¡°They¡¯re about timing, precision, and control. It¡¯s like¡ rewriting the language of battling.¡±
Am¨¦lie snorted, finally breaking the tension. ¡°Yeah, and here I thought battling was supposed to be fun.¡±
Isabelle couldn¡¯t suppress a small laugh, though her mind remained fixed on the battlefield. Rewriting the language of battling, she thought. What does that even mean for someone like me?
As Gallade delivered its final, decisive blow, the crowd erupted into deafening cheers. Isabelle couldn¡¯t help but feel like she¡¯d just witnessed something far more significant than a Glow Dome match. And for reasons she couldn¡¯t explain, Veyron Lux was at the center of it.
The battlefield¡¯s holograms dissolved into glowing particles, fading into the air like the end of a dream. Conkeldurr lay sprawled on the volcanic terrain, its massive concrete pillars resting limply by its side. Gallade stood tall, its glowing blades slowly dimming as it returned to its composed stance. The silence that followed was brief¡ªa single heartbeat¡ªbefore the crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Felix Sparks¡¯ voice boomed across the stadium, barely containing his enthusiasm. ¡°And that¡¯s it, folks! Gallade claims victory with precision, power, and the seamless execution of a fusion move we¡¯ll be talking about for weeks to come! Ladies and gentlemen, your new Glow Dome Champion: the Silent Strategist, Veyron Lux!¡±
But just as Sparks¡¯ voice hit its crescendo, a curious murmur rippled through the crowd. All eyes were on Veyron, but instead of basking in his victory, he stood as calm and composed as ever. Without so much as a nod to the cheering audience, he silently recalled Gallade into its Pok¨¦Ball. Then, to everyone¡¯s astonishment, he turned and began walking away.
¡°Uh¡ wait a second!¡± Sparks stammered, his enthusiasm faltering as he gestured toward Veyron¡¯s retreating figure. ¡°Where¡¯s our champion going? Mr. Lux, surely you¡¯d like to say a few words to your adoring fans¡ª¡±
Veyron didn¡¯t even glance back. His polished shoes clicked softly against the arena floor as he exited the stage with an air of nonchalance, his sharp suit catching the neon lights in just the right way. He looked less like a Trainer celebrating a hard-fought victory and more like someone who had just wrapped up a business deal.
The crowd¡¯s cheers shifted into confused chatter.
¡°Does he always do this?¡± Isabelle whispered, leaning toward Milo.
Milo adjusted his glasses, his expression a mix of fascination and exasperation. ¡°He¡¯s not called the Silent Strategist for nothing.¡±
Beside her, Am¨¦lie stood rigid, gripping the rail as she stared daggers at Veyron¡¯s back. ¡°Unbelievable. He doesn¡¯t even care. What a smug¡ª¡± She cut herself off with an annoyed huff. ¡°Whatever.¡±
Before anyone could fully process Veyron¡¯s abrupt departure, Colby Ferris¡¯s voice blared through the speakers, dragging everyone¡¯s attention back to the field. ¡°Yo, yo, my dudes, we ain¡¯t down and out just yet! Y¡¯all feel that vibe? We¡¯re comin¡¯ back hotter, faster, zingier next week¡ªKERPLUNK STYLE!¡±
The crowd roared with renewed energy as Colby threw his arms up dramatically, his mic booming over the chaos. His Heliolisk darted around him, sparking for effect, while his Salamence stretched its wings in a show of strength despite its earlier defeat.
¡°Next time, we¡¯ll be bringin¡¯ the full zest, baby! Conkeldurr, Heliolisk, my crew, we takin¡¯ this to the top¡ªno cap, all facts! Stay frisky out there!¡± Colby continued, firing off words so fast Isabelle wasn¡¯t sure half of them were real.
Isabelle groaned audibly, burying her face in her hands. ¡°What is this guy even saying? Is it¡ is it a dialect? A new form of language? Do we need subtitles?¡±
Am¨¦lie laughed despite herself, the sound bright and genuine. ¡°Oh, Isabelle, you just witnessed peak Colby Ferris.¡±
Milo shook his head, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. ¡°He¡¯s chaotic, but you can¡¯t deny he knows how to hype up a crowd.¡±
¡°I can deny it,¡± Isabelle muttered, still cringing as Colby strutted off the field, his mic now capturing the sound of his own theme music blaring from portable speakers.
As the Glow Dome began to empty, Isabelle found her thoughts drifting back to the battle. Despite her frustration with Colby and her confusion about Veyron, something about the intensity of the fight had gripped her. The way the Pok¨¦mon moved, the strategy and precision¡ªit was exhilarating. She wasn¡¯t ready to admit it aloud, but watching a battle like that made her wonder if, maybe, there was something thrilling about being a Trainer.
Her VireBand buzzed, snapping her out of her thoughts. The screen lit up with her dad¡¯s name, and she hesitated before answering.
¡°Hi, Dad,¡± she said, her voice sheepish.
¡°Isabelle,¡± came her father¡¯s voice, firm but not angry. ¡°Where are you? It¡¯s almost seven-thirty.¡±
¡°I¡¯m on my way home,¡± she assured him quickly. ¡°I¡¯ll be there soon. Promise.¡±
Am¨¦lie nudged her with a grin. ¡°Busted?¡±
¡°More like on a timer,¡± Isabelle replied, tucking her VireBand against her chest.
Milo stood and adjusted his bag. ¡°I should head out too. School tomorrow.¡± He glanced at Isabelle and gave a small nod. ¡°It was nice meeting you. If you need help with anything at school, just ask.¡±
Am¨¦lie jumped to her feet, her usual brightness returning. ¡°Before we split, Isabelle, let¡¯s exchange info!¡± She held out her VireBand, the holographic display shimmering as she initiated the connection.
Isabelle hesitated. ¡°Uh, sure. But just so you know, I¡¯m terrible at keeping in touch.¡±
Am¨¦lie waved a hand dismissively. ¡°No pressure. You¡¯re stuck with me at school anyway, so I¡¯ll remind you.¡±
The girls tapped their VireBands, the devices chiming softly as their profiles synced. ¡°There,¡± Am¨¦lie said with a wink. ¡°Now you¡¯re officially part of my world.¡±
Isabelle rolled her eyes but smiled faintly. ¡°Great. Can¡¯t wait to disappoint you with my professional flopping skills.¡±
¡°Magikarp today, Gyarados tomorrow,¡± Am¨¦lie replied, throwing an arm around Isabelle¡¯s shoulders before heading off with a quick wave. ¡°See you tomorrow!¡±
As Isabelle made her way out of the Glow Dome, she couldn¡¯t shake the strange mixture of emotions swirling in her chest. She thought about the battle, the crowd, Veyron¡¯s silence, and Colby¡¯s chaos. She thought about her dad waiting at home and Azzy probably bouncing around impatiently.
Today was weird. But maybe weird isn¡¯t so bad.
Interlude: The Magikarp Diaries #1
Interlude: The Magikarp Diaries - Entry #1
Day 1 Summary
Date: 20XX
Location: Lumora City, Starlight Heights
Journal Entry: ¡°Magikarp Diaries¡±
So¡ I survived my first day at Lumora¡¯s Academy for Excellence. Barely.
Let¡¯s break it down, Izzy-style: Picture it. A sprawling campus that looks more like a Pok¨¦mon League HQ than a school, with its shiny floors, way-too-fancy architecture, and students who seem to have their shit together. Everyone¡¯s got their perfect VireBand setups, pristine uniforms, and that smug, ¡°I¡¯m totally going to make Champion by the time I¡¯m eighteen¡± energy.
And then there¡¯s me. Isabelle Moreau, professional flopper in a pond of Gyarados.
Am¨¦lie L¨¦vesque: My first (and possibly only?) friend here. She¡¯s like if sunshine became a person. Loud, bubbly, and effortlessly charming. She dragged me all over Lumora after school, showing off the Neon District like she owned the place. Part of me wonders why someone like her even bothered with someone like me, but she makes it¡ easier. Like the world isn¡¯t as loud when she¡¯s around.
Milo Tanner: Quiet, nerdy, and somehow knows everything about battles. He¡¯s the type who can probably recite every Pok¨¦mon type matchup in his sleep. Am¨¦lie introduced me to him, and he seems nice enough¡ªthough I¡¯m still not sure if I¡¯m supposed to feel inspired or intimidated by his encyclopedic brain.
Colby Ferris (a.k.a. ¡°Kerplunk Guy¡±): Oh Arceus. Where do I even start? Glow Dome¡¯s reigning champ for three weeks, he talks like a brain-damaged Chatot and has the energy of six cans of Pok¨¦Boost. Watching him was like being trapped in a meme that¡¯s become self-aware. But hey, his Salamence is impressive. This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
Veyron Lux (The Silent Strategist): Then there¡¯s this guy. He doesn¡¯t talk, doesn¡¯t pose, doesn¡¯t even acknowledge the crowd¡ªbut somehow, everyone¡¯s obsessed with him. Even I can¡¯t stop thinking about how he just walked into the Glow Dome and completely wrecked Colby like it was nothing. It¡¯s infuriating, really. There¡¯s something about him that feels¡ off. Like he knows something the rest of us don¡¯t.
The Highlights:
School: Didn¡¯t trip over my words in biology. Didn¡¯t cry in math. Didn¡¯t pass out in history. Win.
Glow Dome: Watching Veyron sweep the floor with Colby was equal parts inspiring and terrifying. The guy¡¯s Gallade fought like a knight straight out of some Kalosian fairytale. It was¡ something.
Neon District: Am¨¦lie dragged me through the Neon District, and holy shit, that place is a sensory overload. Everything glows. Everything screams. Everything costs way more than it should. It¡¯s both ridiculous and kind of amazing.
The Lowlights: I hate how small I feel in this city. Lumora is so¡ big. Loud. Intense. It¡¯s like the whole place is daring me to keep up, and I can barely even catch my breath.
Watching the battles at the Glow Dome stirred something in me. I didn¡¯t want it to, but it did. Seeing how people connect with their Pok¨¦mon in ways that feel larger than life¡ªit made me wonder if I could do that, too. And that scares me.
I feel like I don¡¯t belong. Like I¡¯m just¡ flopping around, hoping I won¡¯t drown.
Goals for Tomorrow (Ha, Yeah Right)...
- Survive another day of school.
- Don¡¯t let Am¨¦lie drag me into another spontaneous adventure.
- Figure out what the hell I¡¯m even doing here.
- Maybe¡ªmaybe¡ªthink about talking to someone about this weird idea of starting a Pok¨¦mon journey.
I don¡¯t know what I¡¯m supposed to do next. The League Circuit starts in two weeks, and everyone seems to have their path figured out. Meanwhile, I¡¯m here, a Magikarp with zero splash damage.
Still, even Magikarps can swim up waterfalls, right? Or so the legends say.
Here¡¯s hoping this useless flopper figures it out before she sinks.
