《Domesticated Humans》
Well... WELL.... WELL!
The sun dipped down onto the horizon, turning grass''s green into glowing reds and yellows. The village has started locking its doors, and only one person is left outside: 15-year-old Toumi Ropou.
"Just another few red berries will last us... ouch!"
He drew his hand back after having accidentally stuck it into a thorn. After staying quiet for a few seconds and observing his wound, he worked up the courage to draw back the branches in the plant, expecting a larger grove of berries.
Instead he saw a small clearing with something in it''s middle.
"What is this place?" Toumi had never seen this before. It seemed to be an old well, but as he walked closer, something seemed off.
And before he could say or do anything else, he felt a magical force pulling at him, dragging him towards the well.If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
As he''s pulled into the pit, his head hits the stone body of the well, and he passes out.
What seemed to be only moments later, he was woken up by a strange sound, and as he pulled himself up, he saw neither the well''s interior, nor his own village. Instead, he had woken up in a small, damp cave.
A tiny voice sounded from below him.
"Good morning sir! You should probably hide before they find you!"
Toumi looked down to see a tiny creature. It looked like a dog, like some malformed chihuahua, but with multiple tiny sets of faery wings on it''s back.
"What''reyou?" asked Toumi, confused. He''d heard legend of faery like this before, but those were kids tales, specifically made up for scared little children.
But right in front of him was irrefutable proof of their existence.
The tiny creature started to say something, until something caught it''s attention, and it shut up.
"That is not important. Whatis important, young Toumi, is that you hide behind a rock before you get caught by the slimes patrolling this area of the dungeon."
First encounters
Toumi dove behind a moss-covered rock, as a faint noise came into the room, each "footstep" slapping against the uneven cobbled pathways of the dungeon like thunder on the hills during a storm. A brigade of maybe 50 slimes marched through the cave, which probably connected to somewhere else important.
After waiting for a time, the noises receded into nothingness, and Toumi stepped back out to address the creature.
"You," he said coldly. "You brought me here, didn''t you?"
The creature turned around to face him, nodding solemnly.
"Why? What reason could you possibly have to take somebody from their own home to some strange dimension?" Toumi was fuming. He had a family to get back to.
The creature seemed horrified for a second, before speaking up.
"Allow me to properly introduce myself. I am a faery spirit known as ''$\5<{:*''... but for now, you may call me Lynn." The creature seemed oddly cordial for a mythological being of doom.
"You were called here to save the human race from being kept as pets to the monsters of this realm. They''re kept as slaves to entertain and assist them, and need to be freed. So of course I summoned a hero!"
Toumi scoffed. He wasn''t a hero. He was just a clumsy kid. If a magical creature thinks he''s fit to save anyone, they must not be that magical.
"Toumi, look at me," Toumi looks up. "I''ve given you a rank in the Majisum. That means you now can level up if you defeat enough enemies. Use this power to save humans from their captors." Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.
Toumi checked his stat chart. He was currently a level 0. Embarrasing, but he could change that later. He scrolled through the UI until he found an "inventory", containing a weakling level sword.
Lynn smiled. "Defeat lower level monsters. Rise through ranks, and destroy humanity''s enemy. I must go, but I will come back when I can."
Lynn vanished into thin air, and Toumi collected his sword from his inventory. He promptly renamed it ''Slime Slayer'' and got to work... crushing ants for 1 XP per ant.
"This is so slow..." He sighed, having spent 24 hours to get to level 12 on nothing but ants and frogs in the cave. Eventually, he found himself drifting off to sleep.
"Help!" A girl scremed from somewhere in the distance, waking Toumi from his slumber. He immediately reached for his sword, and ran out toward the scream, hoping no monster got in his way. Thankfully, none did.
Toumi had reached another cave entrance when a girl on a metal leash stepped out. She had long brown hair and big purple eyes. Looking down, Toumi noticed her eyes weren''t the only big thing about her. A second after her, came out a monster. It was maybe seven feet tall, and had a reptilian appearance to it. The girl mouthed for help, and Toumi aimed his sword at the monster.
"You think you can end me with that weak little blade?" The monster laughed as he spit acid at it, melting it to almost nothing. Toumi panicked and let it fall to the ground. The monster looked up to find that after dropping the sword, Toumi had apparenty fled. It was just about to go back into his cave, when he felt something.
Toumi had ran behind him, and was now reaching through his natrually armoured skin, to clutch his heart.
"You ugly little human! How did you even do that? My skin is too thick for that!" Truth be told, Toumi didn''t really know. But he started to squeeze the heart, causing it''s owner to drop to his knees, writhing in pain. Then, without warning, Toumi yanked the heart out, and the monster evaporated into tiny golden bubbles: XP points. They cascaded to Toumi. He reached level 13 and was able to obtain a "basic sword".
His accidental lies
Toumi examined the sword. It seemed better quality than the first one. Sitting down, he continued silently tracing over the weapon with his eyes until a girl''s voice suddenly caught his attention.
"How did you defeat my master, sir? His armor class was in the hundreds!" The girl exclaimed. Of course that question didn''t have many answers, but she needed to know...
"Oh, maybe I just grinded for levels better than I originally anticipated. It was easy to get caught up in squishing ants~ And don''t call me sir. I''m no hero. I''m just a regular guy," said Toumi, smiling. "By the way, what''s your name?"
The girl blushed a bit. "My n-name is Tamatsu... my parents were caught by the monsters years ago, and perished. During the raid, they also... took my brother. Could you please help me find him?" Tamatsu looked into Toumi''s eyes, with a pleading look.
Toumi inhaled through his teeth. That was a tough question. Did he have time for finding brothers, when he had a home to get back to...
Suddenly, Lynn materialized from a puff of smoke. They flew up to Toumi, visibly angered, which caused Toumi to back up a bit.
"Oh, now you consider going home? Why didn''t you consider it when the monster attacked?!" Lynn yelled, starting a small fight. Tamatsu grabbed a blanket and took a nap, hoping conflict would settle later. As she drifted off to sleep, she heard the two continue to argue.
She woke up, gasping, feeling like she had just been grabbed by the heart. Her fear of Toumi had been rising every second since witnissing him fight that monster. Splashing some water onto her face from a small river in the cave, she took a minute to clear her head. She thought back to that moment talking to Toumi the other night. Something wasn''t adding up. The monster was an AC 100, meaning it''s armor was pretty much maxed out. "Some guy" would have died the moment they tried to even touch such a powerful monster. Yet Toumi did so with ease, and in fact was able to entirely extinguish it''s life.
The question was, if he wasn''t just some guy, what was he? Did he even know he was that powerful? She should tell him-
"Tamatsu?! You gonna stay out there all night or what?!" Toumi called, tucked neatly into his sleeping bag. They had raided some monsters'' lairs and found these luxurious items.
"Y- Yeah! Be right there!" Tamatsu responded. she hesitated, and then poked her head into the tent.
Toumi lay in the bed, cuddling a little stuffed bear he had robbed from a slime nest. Tamatsu almost giggled at the juxtaposition of the boy. He was very dangerous if what she had seen was correct, yet he seemed so childish in behaviour. Yawning, she closed her eyes, ready to rest and later, rescue her brother.
The next morning, she woke up to find Toumi not in his bed. She jolted upright to look for him, only for him to be standing just outside their tent.

"You finally woke up?" He looked at her. "So I may have overlooked some stuff... and there''s a slight chance that there''s maybe 20-50 vengeful slimes here. Since you clearly don''t have a weapon, just stay away from the fight.," He explained bluntly.
"Toumi, how did this even happen?" Tamatsu asked. After a few seconds of no response, she sighed. "Ok, I won''t intrude. They''re dangerous in large groups, so get away from them."
He stabbed a slime, confused. "Dangerous? They die so easy!" He gigglled. "They''re literally sentient puddles, I think I''ll be ok."
Just as he said that, another slime jumped at him, absolutely decking him. He landed on the ground, getting a few small scratches from the friction of the stone, but being otherwise unharmed. His sword fell neatly beside him, but he ignored it, pissed off.
"C''mon, I was busy talking!" He shouted, ready to fight the slime. It didn''t respond, and began to hop away as if it hadn''t done anything. Toumi was furious, and began to shout. "And of course now you choose to ignore me!" He ran at the slime, and punched it before it could hop away.
Both Toumi and Tamatsu gasped as the slime began to glow, and a few seconds later melted into a small puddle. Toumi backed away, shocked, as Tamatsu analyzed it.
"Tamatsu, is that normal in this world?" Toumi asked, a hint of concern rising in his voice. "Because I could not do that before."
"No, not at all." Tamatsu replied, astounded.
Before Toumi could fully freak out, a group of about twenty slimes ganged up on them. Toumi jumped up to fight, while Tamatsu grabbed his sword for him. The two made an amazing team while fighting. Tamatsu could make a plan, and Toumi would kill the slimes, making the job quick and efficient. Slime after slime was chopped down, until each was finally resting as a small amount of sludge on the dungeon floor.
Toumi and Tamatsu sat on the cold, stone ground, tired out. They hadn''t ever fought so hard, and took a long break, sitting next to eachother, panting, and holding eachothers'' hands.
"That was difficult. Why didn''t you use your ability? That would have made the fight easier!" inquired Tamatsu, staring into Toumi''s eyes.
"Well," Toumi started. "I don''t know how to use it. So that wasn''t a valid option." Tamatsu agreed with the statement.
"Ok, I forgot that part. I guess we should figure it out?" Suggested Tamatsu. Toumi stepped away.
"No thank you¨C" He looked shaken. "It''s scary. I don''t like all the killing." Tamatsu hadn''t realized Toumi never meant to kill anything.
"Ok then, no killing anything unless it''s directly threatening our lives." Tamatsu affirmed, making Toumi smile.
The two sat down to discuss what they would do. Since Tamatsu was an escaped "pet", she couldn''t be seen in the dungeon without raising questions, so Toumi suggested they leave the dungeon.
After packing up what few supplies they had, the two started a journey to a nearby opening in the cave. On the way there, they talked about their goals.
Toumi listened as Tamatsu ranted about her home life, what her brother was like, and her plans on getting him back. When Tamatsu asked Toumi about his goals, he stopped for a second.
"It''s complicated. I want to go home, but I don''t know how. So I guess I wanna help you out until I can make a better plan?" Toumi sighed, before beginning to walk again.
That seemed reasonable enough to Tamatsu, and she followed him up through the cave, making sure to not slip on some damp rocks, until light began to appear, far ahead of where they were.
"Can we make the journey there in one go, or should we rest soon?" Asked Toumi.
"I''d say if we don''t make any stops, we can make it there in a few hours." Tamatsu concluded. It was a reasonable guess, so both decided that was the better choice.
Fanboy
The two had been walking for a few hours now. The sunset¡¯s orange color set the room ablaze in dazzling light, refracting from water and crystal alike.
¡°Doesn¡¯t it look pretty?¡± Asked Tamatsu, taking in the scenery.
Toumi looked around, then shrugged. ¡°It¡¯s nice I guess,¡± He answered, ¡°But we still have to get out of the caves. What do you think we¡¯ll find out there?¡±
¡°Maybe more monsters? Maybe escaped humans? Either way they¡¯ll no doubt be aggressive.¡±
Toumi continued walking, no words escaping his mouth. Tamatsu followed behind him.
¡°Hey¡ You ok?¡± Tamatsu followed up her previous words. ¡°If I find a weapon, you won¡¯t have to-¡±
Toumi looked at her, tears dripping down his face. ¡°If I was brought here to save everyone, why can¡¯t I handle my own power?¡±
Tamatsu took a moment to think, then held his hand. ¡°We¡¯ll sort it out eventually-¡±
Toumi pushed her away. ¡°Don¡¯t touch me! What if I kill you? What if when I get home, I kill my parents too?!¡± He took a breath. ¡°If I can¡¯t control it, I don¡¯t want to put you in danger¡¡±
Tamatsu jumped forward, hugging him.
¡°It won¡¯t happen," She reassured him. "Listen to me, I won¡¯t let it happen, I promise. Now let¡¯s get out of this cave while there¡¯s still daylight left. Got it?¡±
Toumi nodded, wiping the tears from his eyes. A few seconds later, after Toumi had calmed down, the two continued walking at a reasonably slower pace. The unexpected shift in speed meant they would need to camp inside the caves overnight, and reach the exit the next day.
The two stumbled around the caves, looking for a flat surface to pitch their tent on, and found one next to a small lake after an hour of searching. Tamatsu pitched up the tent, as Toumi stood watch over her, sword drawn.
¡°Toumi, you can set down the sword. Come sleep.¡± Tamatsu yelled from her comfortable sleeping bag. Toumi started walking back to the tent, sword set gently on the ground, when he heard a faint dripping. What started as a gentle trickle soon became a cacophony of water upon water. Toumi turned around to come face-to-face with a gargantuan mosquito, towering at maybe 3 stories tall. Its massive wings just barely scratched the cave¡¯s ceiling, and its proboscis was large enough to swallow a car if it wanted to, of course there were no cars in this world, but the size was accurate enough.
¡°Shi-shit,¡± Toumi gasped, falling to the ground. The massive insect took a step towards him, and he scrambled for a sword. His hand brushed the sword away, and it clattered into the lake.Find this and other great novels on the author''s preferred platform. Support original creators!
The mosquito took a step towards Toumi, a loud, low, bass-like hum echoing across the walls. He cowers away just as the mosquito leans closer toward him, but nothing happens.
He opened his eyes to see a guy standing over him, holding a sword covered in blood.
¡°Are you ok? That mosquito looked pretty powerful for a kid like you to fight on your own,¡± He spoke. ¡°My name¡¯s Kyouko.¡± He offered to help Toumi up.
Toumi stood up, confused. ¡°Thanks, I guess?¡± He smiled uncomfortably. ¡°But I gotta go¡¡± He turned to walk away.
Before he could leave, Kyouko asked the one question Toumi knew was suspicious.
¡°Why didn¡¯t you use your powers, if I may politely ask?¡± He inquired, trying to act casual and hide his stiff posture.
Their surroundings got quiet for a moment as Toumi processed the comment.
¡°How did you know? Get in the tent and tell me how you know that.¡± Toumi furiously replied. ¡°Tamatsu deserves this explanation as much as I do,¡± He struggled to push Kyouko into the tent and shove him down into a sitting position. If anything, he had let Toumi push him around.
Moments later, the three had a conversation, and ultimately would leave the tent as a group of friends, no matter how much Toumi wished otherwise.
Kyouko was an orphan who worked in a temple, and a goddess had told him to protect Toumi with his life. Toumi was highly skeptical of this newfound group (he preferred to travel only with Tamatsu, hoping he had a chance at a relationship with her.)
¡°So now I have a tall, edgy bodyguard. What a lovely addition to my life,¡± His voice wrought with sarcasm. Kyouko smirked at him.
¡°We should get to sleep now. The exit is close enough. we¡¯ll get there after another few hours of walking.¡± Tamatsu tried to keep the conversation as nonviolent as possible. Toumi and Kyouko both sighed and went to sleep on opposite sides of their tent.
Toumi awoke to the bright rays of the sun once again filling the cave. Glancing around he could tell he was the only one awake. He stood up to find something to drink, but stumbled. His entire body was sore, like he had spent all night trying to fight something. He shrugged it off as sleeping weird, but still felt it was kind of odd. He pushed his way out to check the cave and see if there was anything worth doing.
The small lake glistened with the rays of the rising sun, blinding Toumi as he walked about. Violets blossomed in the tiny meadow near the lake, and Toumi plucked one, sniffing it, and taking in the sweet, flowery aroma.
¡°That¡¯s a cute flower, Toumi. Who¡¯s it for?¡± He heard a voice ask.
¡°You know exactly who it¡¯s for,¡± he giggled, turning around to tuck the flower into Tamatsu¡¯s hair, right above her ear. This gesture made her blush, taken aback. Seconds passed with the two flustered individuals waiting.
Until Tamatsu leaned forwards and kissed Toumi. A long, passionate kiss that left his heart rate so high he was dizzy. So this was what love was like?
¡°Come on Toumi,¡± She smiled, holding his hand and pulling him to the cave¡¯s exit. ¡°Kyouko is getting impatient. We only have a little while left until we reach the mouth of the cave.¡±
As they trudged through the cave, Kyouko grumbled angrily about Toumi taking too long to do stuff.
¡°Toumi, it¡¯s dangerous to go out without someone there to protect you,¡± He ranted, out of breath. ¡°Please don¡¯t do that again. Please.¡±
Toumi snickered. Kyouko knew how dangerous Toumi was. Even if he didn¡¯t want to use his power, if it was a life-or-death situation, Toumi clearly didn¡¯t need some fanatic ready to worship his every move.
From what Tamatsu estimated, they would make it to the outside by about midday, meaning it was about a 5-hour walk, which was fine, but Toumi didn¡¯t think Kyouko would make it any easier. And he still had a suspicious feeling about the brooding yet joyful newcomer.
Nightmare
Kyouko had been pestering Toumi for hours, and for just a moment he felt like he wanted to use his power on Kyouko. Once the high of the moment had worn off he was horrified. He didn¡¯t want to just kill someone for a minor inconvenience.
¡°It¡¯s only for emergencies¡ It¡¯s only for emergencies¡¡± Toumi whispered, not realizing he had spoken aloud until Kyouko noticed.
¡°Toumi, are you ok?¡± He asked, looking back to Toumi from the front of the group.
¡°Yeah. Sorry.¡± Toumi replied timidly, shying away from Kyouko, who had slowed his pace to match Toumi¡¯s.
Tamatsu slowed down a bit, until Kyouko nodded at her. She continued walking, leaving Toumi and Kyouko at the back of the line.
¡°It¡¯s gonna be ok, Toumi. I promise, there are adventures out there that people in the cave can only dream of! I know a village that has everything we need. It¡¯s about a week¡¯s journey from here to there, so if you aren¡¯t interested-¡± Kyouko cut off, looking expectantly at Toumi.
Toumi stared for a second, confused. More like lost in thought. A week with Kyouko¡¯s jokes and near-obsessive behaviour would be the end of him. Then again, he needed to figure out a way to go home, as fast as he possibly could.
¡°I guess¡¡± He replied. ¡°As long as it has the answers to all my questions.¡± Toumi smiled weakly.
Kyouko glanced at him.
¡°It does. Trust me, you won¡¯t have any questions once we get there.¡± Toumi couldn¡¯t help but notice a small drop of water roll down Kyouko¡¯s face. Yet Kyouko¡¯s outward appearance changed not one bit.
Must¡¯ve been imagining it, thought Toumi, walking at normal speeds again.
Further time had passed until the trio finally stepped out of the cave. The sun peeked behind the horizon, slipping into nighttime. Toumi yawned, and leaned on Kyouko. The latter blushed slightly, standing still. After a few seconds, he grabbed Toumi and carried him bridal-style to where Tamatsu had set up a campsite.
Setting Toumi down gently onto a sleeping bag, he sat across from Tamatsu.
¡°What is our plan from now? We¡¯re heading to the village to uncover ancient mysteries. Do you have anywhere to go?¡± Kyouko whispered, trying to not wake Toumi.
¡°Yes. My family¡¯s home is located along the way to the village. I¡¯ll stay with you,¡± She whispered back. ¡°If you¡¯ll have me, of course,¡± she added.
With that, the two settled into bed and slept soundly. Toumi, on the other hand, did not.
His nightmares were full of the horrific, dismembered corpses of people he knew. He saw his family, Tamatsu, Kyouko, and even the monster he had killed when he first arrived in this world. The most horrific thing was the lack of blood. The bodies all twisted in unnatural ways, yet no blood was spilled, as if some form of magic had killed them. All around him were the whispers of the deceased.
¡°This is what happens to the family of a pet who does not behave. Be good for your master, honey.¡± Spoke a woman¡¯s voice, and Toumi woke up, drenched in sweat.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
His heart was racing, but the memories of his dream were fading fast. Kyouko and Tamatsu were waiting outside the tent for him. They were safe, and that was all that mattered, right?
Right. Why worry about anything else currently?
He stood up, walking out of the tent. The forest surroundings around the cave felt like a healthy change after his first few days surrounded by damp stone. Only the disperse sounds of nocturnal creatures, and Tamatsu and Kyouko¡¯s conversation, broke the stunning silence of the outside world.
¡°Finally awake?¡± Jabbed Kyouko.
¡°Sorry if I kept you guys from travelling more.¡± Toumi apologized. Kyouko grumbled but said nothing further.
¡°It¡¯s fine. We¡¯re in no rush,¡± Tamatsu broke the silence between the boys. ¡°I¡¯ll go prepare breakfast. You guys talk for a bit.¡±
She walked out of sight, leaving Toumi and Kyouko to themselves. Toumi sat, staring down at the grass, until he broke the silence.
¡°What do you think will happen when we get there?¡± He asked. Kyouko could sense the hurt in his voice, and knew what he was thinking.
¡°How would I know?¡± he asked. ¡°When we get there, we can rethink this. For now, our destination is the temple, and nothing else.¡±
He noticed Toumi seemed to become more upset, and quickly adjusted his words.
¡°But cheer up. We have a week to figure stuff out.¡±
Toumi started to say something, but stopped when he heard Tamatsu¡¯s footsteps approaching.
¡°I found some eggs and mushrooms. Eat up, we have a very long day of travel ahead of us.¡±
The trio ate their food and settled in for the night. Toumi yet again felt something was off as he slowly fell asleep. This time his sleep was fast and dreamless, and he awoke still tired. Thirsty, he gently got out of his sleeping bag and kneeled down to sip from a freshwater pond.
A young girl peered out from the bushes adjacent to the pond. He estimated her at 8-9 years old. ¡°C-can you please help me. A dragon killed my family and now I¡¯m all alone,¡± she sobbed. Toumi initially felt he should stay away from something so dangerous, but his friends woke up and ran out to the pond.
¡°Toumi, who¡¯s that girl?¡± asked Tamatsu as she ran up to him, panting.
¡°She says her family was killed by a dragon,¡± he responded. ¡°Should we help her?¡±
Kyouko spoke up. ¡°I think we should.¡± Tamatsu agreed. Toumi had no choice, the majority had voted.
¡°Ok little girl,¡± he began as he turned around to her again. ¡°We¡¯ll help.¡±
The trio hiked into the forest the girl was in, and followed her as she led them deeper in. Minutes had passed, and no such village had come into sight. Just as Toumi was getting suspicious, the girl ducked into an opening in the vines, and he followed. A town of maybe 50-60 now-charred buildings stood, surrounded by the expanse of forest.
The girl continued walking, and stopped in the middle of the town. The trio stood further back, as they sensed something eerie about it. Where were all the people? If nobody was there, and everything was already destroyed, why were they lured there? Unless-
The girl started giggling. Her flesh peeled back into scales. She was the dragon all along. Standing at two stories high, she bared her teeth at the group. Kyouko realized he didn¡¯t bring any weapons with him, and Tamatsu hadn¡¯t either. Toumi had hated that this was his one choice, but if he didn¡¯t kill the dragon, he and his friends would surely perish here, and Toumi wasn¡¯t going down without a fight.
He stepped forward, and the dragon growled, threatening to shoot a fireball from its glowing maw. The air around it shimmered with heat, and Toumi had just enough time to pull his friends to the ground before a ball of flame engulfed the very spot they had been standing in only a few seconds before.
While the dragon recharged its flame, Toumi stood up and readied himself to run at the dragon. It seemed to be rapidly attaining heat, so, without wasting any of his valuable time, he sprinted to the dragon¡¯s leg, and touched his palm to it. Without warning, its huge body went limp, and crashed down upon the remains of the very village it had destroyed. Toumi¡¯s friends walked to him, and hugged him. This was the first time he¡¯d been shown affection since being sent here. He was reminded of his family. Would he ever see them again? It took massive amounts of self-control to not start sobbing there.
Thankfully he didn¡¯t. He was the strongest in the group, and had to maintain composure to help protect the others. As he thought that, a brief flash of darkness, interrupted only by the image of an elegant woman, overtook him, and was gone just as fast. It was his sign to stay on task. He somehow knew this was the goddess whom the temple belonged to. The one Kyouko had talked about.
¡°Back to camp. We should pack our stuff up, the conditions are perfect for more traveling,¡± he commanded, refusing to explain his reasoning. Yet, as they all marched back to the site they had stayed overnight at, he felt guilty for lying briefly to his friends. Might as well add that to his list of weaknesses.
