《Forever under My Care》 Chapter 1 - Rea Bianchi I was inside the car of Antonio De Luca - the person I would now be living under his roof and was my dad''s boss. 27 years old, wealthy, owns businesses yet have no wife sounds weird. No man would have such enormous wealth with a woman by his side - or so I thought. I stared at him from behind as he drove. Too bad I couldn''t talk to him... at all. I am mute. When my dad died, he told Antonio to take care of me. There was so much unspoken words in the air. Could Antonio sense it too? Upon arrival at his Estate, we''re we met with security guards taking care of the gate entrance. We went through some background checks before going through. Me and being mute, what''s going on?! "This is normal." Finally, I heard Antonio speak. 8 turned to face him as he continued. "Hope they didn''t scare you or anything. They are simply doing their job." I stared at him before replying. Could I sign at him or write on Notes? Deciding to write on my Notes app, I told him, "Thank you for explaining. That puts me at ease." Giving me a small nod, he then gestured me to get inside and then, drove inside the Villa. It is gigantic, luxurious, stunning and as they call it, ''off-the-charts'' or ''one-of-a-kind'' type of Villa. The drop-off point had a shed and even a drive in, but I was glad he didn''t do that. After the door was opened by other staff, I stepped out and took in my surroundings. I caught sight of the lily flower and hydrangea flower. It felt too good to believe that he never has a wife but I could sense that they were planted for a certain someone. As we got inside, I looked at the reception. Surprised, I asked, "Where is the house? Won''t I get lost while heading to and from home to work?" Antonio fell silent before signing, "No you won''t. I will show you the ins and outs." Then he ended with the words, "And don''t worry, I will always be there for you." I looked at him stunned. I wouldn''t have separation anxiety no matter what he does. "Thanks for the concern," I wrote. We then walked into the main house. I opened my eyes in shock and admiration. My dad and I lied in a mansion, but not this big and stunning. Antonio continued walling, leaving me behind as I gawked at the house. "Rea?" Antonio called out, bursting my little bubble. I walked to him quickly and we both were met with more staff in the house greeting him. He then introduced me to them. "Welcome Rea De-" "Oooh," the staff said, realizing what he was about to say. "Rea Bianchi." They faced me and welcomed me. My anxiety went up again. I couldn''t speak. Would they understand sign language? Will they see me as weird? "Word of caution," Antonio said, capturing everyone''s attention. "Although Rea can''t speak, she can hear. If I hear anything from any one of you..." Even I - although I never worked for him before knew what was to come next for a disobedient worker - loss of employment and a permanent job ban. They agreed and went to work. Jackie, who seemed to be more closer to Antonio, was assigned to take care of me. I felt like a child whenever people did that but unlike the others, Jackie took me as a real person. And the best part is that she knows sign language! "Rea Bianchi, right?" she asked. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. "Yes. Jackie?" I replied, asking her the same question. "Yes. If you need anything, I am a... phone call away." I laughed. Since I can''t speak, the only to ask for help is by calling. "Thank you, I will," I replied as I walked upstairs. My belongings were not that many since I never bought a lot of things. I got to my room and it was ten times bigger than mine back home. I have always wanted to know what my father wrote to Antonio before his death. Whether he truly said that he must take care of me or if there was a catch to it. Antonio had this cold exterior that makes him untouchable, unreachable. It had been mostly said that those with cold exteriors are actually the soft ones. I wanted to see Antonio''s soft side. I lied on my bed, contemplating what to do. I had to sleep early for work. I was a pyschiatrist at the Deluca Hospital. It was the biggest and known as the best in the country. Until the next morning... "What?!" I signed, showing shock and confusion. There were times I wished I could talk... this was the time. "How can you make me stop working?!" "It''s for the best, Rea," he said, adding no further reasons. "I can''t believe this..." I could hear chuckles from the others. I switched from signing to play voice audios of my text. "Being a psychiatrist is my life Antonio! It kept me going!" "For danger reasons, you won''t be allowed to go," he said. "Can you at least give me one?" I asked. "It''s... not easy to explain." "There has to be some reason." "Rea, tell me, when last did you get proper sleep?" "Yesterday." "How many hours?" "..." One thing - annoying thing about Antonio was that he loved being persuasive. He could turn your words against you. And he knew that being a psychiatrist sometimes meant working for the entire night. "Don''t turn my words against me." "Just take a rest, for some few months." "Months?!" I exclaimed, "I don''t have months, Antonio! Kids need my expertise... they need my help." "I have put a substitute in your place." "Excuse me...?" "See you later Rea." He then walked out, leaving me with mixed emotions. I turned to look at the others who were somehow clapping hands. I looked at them, confused. "What''s going on?" "No one has ever spoken up to Antonio before, so it''s pretty impressive. Well done!" "Thank you," I said smiling a bit. I spent the rest of my day in my room, trying to heal my broken heart. He never spoke to me about it and he goes on to make decisions. Just because I am mute, doesn''t mean I can''t hear. Thinking about it did break my heart a bit, but I had to know why Antonio made me stop working. I took my laptop and searched ''Deluca Hospital'' and showed me its website. Opening it, it gave me it''s history, the best doctors - my name included - and then moved on to the owners. I then saw Antonio. Yes. Antonio De Luca. Owner of the Deluca Hospital and of many hospitals around the world. Everything finally clicked. No wonder it was so easy to replace me so quickly. He was the owner. And some misconceptions were cleared up. I always thought he was in the mafia since he always had mysterious phone calls and alway busy with ''work''. Shutting down my laptop, Antonio''s words came back to me. "When last did you get proper sleep?" "Since last month to be honest, I could barely sleep yesterday." *** ANTONIO''S POV "So, how is Rea?" "She okay, although she doesn''t seem affected by her father''s death." "See? She is a strong woman." "Not the point uncle," I said, Anyway, from today, she won''t be coming to the hospital." "Why? Are you scared that a woman is working?" "No, it''s called safety precautions." "You took away her beloved career, moves in with you after her father''s death, and is unable to say a word because she is mute. She might think you are an emotionless human being who doesn''t even consider her emotions." "Like I said - precautions. People are always after me, who knows if they might target her?" "Who?" "..." "Antonio?" "The people looking for Ronaldi Bianchi." I had to keep Rea safe at all costs - especially when her father''s enemies are after him. *** It was evening, I knew Antonio would be coming home soon. Putting on my simplest, yet nicest outfit, I came downstairs. I was about to go prepare something when Antonio walked inside. It was my first full day being in the Villa. Was I supposed to do anything for him? Jackie pushed me to him, and he looked down at me, considering our height difference. "Do you want to say something?" Antonio asked. Cold as always... "No," I said, moving back and heading upstairs. Of course... there was nothing to talk about. *** ANTONIO''S POV I was on the kitchen counter, concentrating on the work I was doing... being owner of the hospital and of all the De Luca businesses my father left me with was hard work - who would get things done apart from me? I then heard faint steps coming down the stairs. Stopping, I turned to see Rea walk past and head to the fridge, looking for something to snack on. "Your meals are in the microwave," I said. She quickly turned around to face me. Her eyes so clear, yet felt unreachable. Has she always been this shut down with her feelings? "Thanks," she signed as she closed the fridge and took her meals from the microwave. She was about to head upstairs but... I needed a companion to stay downstairs with me, so... "You can sit here," I gestured at the empty seat beside me, "Why go through all that hassle heading upstairs?" *** I was surprised at him wanting me to sit beside me, so I reluctantly did. I ate my meals beside him while he was busy with his work. Taking care of the hospital and other businesses was not an easy type of thing to manage but Antonio De Luca was great in being a boss. After I finished my meals, I cleaned it and headed to my room. "Good night Rea." I then headed upstairs, and into my room. Before I could turn in for the night, I then received a message from an unknown number. "Keep your eyes open tomorrow Rea..." "Because it is the day Antonio might say his last words." I then received a phone call from the same number. "Rea Bianchi." "..." "You won''t be mute by the time Antonio hits underground." I widened my eyes. "Tick tock, tick tock." With that, the call was dropped and I stood in place, staring at my phone. Antonio... will die tomorrow? Chapter 2 - The Message (1) I woke up feeling uneasy. But I couldn''t tell Antonio what it was about. As soon as he left, I went straight to my laptop and tried hacking the number that messaged me. "The user uses a VPN," I said to myself. There is no way to track a person if they are using that. I bit my nail, thinking of a plan B. *VPN = Virtual Private Network. "Who are you?" I typed as I replied to the message. "Your joy destroyer," the person replied after a few seconds. "What do you want from me?" I asked. "Leave Antonio." I stopped. If he wanted to kill Antonio so badly, why would he want me to leave? Would it be so that he could finish the job easily without obstacles? "Why?" I asked, although obvious. "None of your business," the person replied. "It is, if-" I then received a message from Antonio. This was a first. Was he in hospital already? Quickly opening his message, it read: "Let''s get married." Telepathy or what, but not me thinking the same way as I was about to reply to the unknown number. "Sure," I replied, without thinking twice, "Let''s get married." Antonio Asking her to get married was to keep her safe from the people who were plotting to kill her. Well knowing that her family gave her - or rather sold her to me... she would get to that later. But her immediately accepting the proposal felt too good to be true. I knew she was hiding something from me, but she would tell me at her own time. I sent her the details of where we would be getting married and how everything has been arranged. "Our Villa in the outskirts at 12 noon. Make sure no one follows you. Use one of the cars in the garage." She quickly replied, "I will make sure." "Not asking for a wedding dress, Ms. Rea?" I asked myself, "That''s almost every girl''s dream." Our conversation then ended. Rea was unique from the others that I have met (not that I have been in a relationship before), but there are a lot of secrets she keeps beneath that shy exterior. And I will make sure to find out. Rea One thing about Antonio was that he wouldn''t plan a wedding if he didn''t have everything in place. So why bother asking for a dress knowing that it''s already there? Antonio is a secretive person, but since we are getting married, that means that most of his secrets would be out in the open (to me). But that also includes me. Whatever his motive is in marrying me... no.His motive can''t be the same as mine. I am trying to protect him. But I don''t need protection. My family abandoned me when my dad died. No one needs me. I am my own person. It was 10 in the morning, and knowing how much of a punctual man Antonio is, I decided to get ready. He didn''t tell me how to look like when I arrived. "An interesting man you are Antonio," I said to myself as I looked through my clothes in my wardrobe. Picking a simple black turtle neck dress, along with white, flower-shaped stud earrings. It was almost an hour''s drive from here so I took a shower and went to eat breakfast. Making myself a cup of coffee, Jackie came to join me. "I heard you are getting married today." I looked at her after reading the text on her phone. Antonio told her already. I nodded. Taking out my phone, I continued. "It came as a surprise, but I accepted." She smiled and gave me a hug. It felt so warm... when last did I feel this warmth? From my mom before she died. I nearly was moved to tears, but I had to keep it in for the wedding. I thanked her and after having our cup of coffee together, I went to get dressed. I looked at myself in the mirror one more time and took my phone as I walked out of my room. I went downstairs and Jackie gave me a thumps up. I waved her goodbye and I headed to the basement. Antonio told me to choose any car... I chose the black, tinted Mini Cooper. The smaller, the less suspicious, right? Getting in, I was about to put into my GPS the location Antonio sent me until I remembered that my phone could be hacked. Thus, I decided to use my other untouched phone. I transferred Antonio''s conversations with me and sent him a quick message. "Morning. This is my new number. Please use this number when reaching out to me. Thank you."Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation. "Sent." "And read?!" I exclaimed mentally as I stared at my phone, shocked by how he read my message so quickly. I guess there were many things that changed between us today. "Got it," he replied, "Are you out of the house yet?" "Yes, I am about to leave the parking lot," I replied, starting the engine. "Read." "See you there," his last message came through, before he went offline. Seeing him immediately read my messages... if I was a hopeless romantic, I would have melted a while ago. ***Luckily, the direction to Antonio''s second Villa was easy - use the high way all the way until you turn left to a gravel road. This was for security reasons and so that no one knew where Antonio''s Villas were located. Surprisingly today, there had to be traffic. In fact, a roadblock. As I removed my license, another message from Antonio got in. "If there''s a roadblock, give themI arrived at the Villa earlier than him. That was a great start. I remained in the car, waiting for his message until someone knocked on the car window. Rolling down the window, Jackie was standing outside. How she got here earlier than me, I had no idea. "Let me guess, Antonio is here?" Jackie nodded. I could never beat Antonio in being time punctual. "I am coming," I signed before closing the window and locking the car as I walked out. The venue was set up already, and it was as extravagant as the normal interior setup of the Villa we lived in. Jackie led me to the changing room where there were many dresses and jewelry. "Antonio said you can pick whatever you want," Jackie said. I looked through the dresses and saw a white, ballgown dress without straps, with a sweetheart neckline. I chose A Heritage In Bloom necklace along with white Stuart Weitzman high heels. "You look stunning," Jackie signed. With a smile, I thanked her, and letting out a breath, I opened the door and headed out, walking to the door of the wedding venue. I didn''t take any flowers, and I was proud of it - this wedding was unique and simple, yet expensive. The doors opened and I walked inside. I caught sight of Antonio with a surprised look before turning into a smirk. I looked at him, walking confidently as I approached him. Antonio''s men, uncle and a little girl - I assumed that was Antonio''s daughter, then the staff were the only ones at the wedding. The wedding took place in minutes. We signed and got our marriage certificate, but then when the officiator announced that we were married, my thoughts went to Antonio. Was he going to...? As everyone clapped hands, Antonio gave me a kiss on the forehead. Unexpected, but grateful that he didn''t force his way to me. We took a couple of photos, some just the two of us, and the others with the family, then staff. I asked Jackie to join in and after I went to change back into my clothes, I joined Antonio, who was talking to his uncle. "I''m not sure if Rea will be open to that-" "Rea!" He exclaimed, giving me a hug, "Congratulations." Guessing he knew my situation, he waited patiently for me to reply (since I was typing on my phone). "Thank you sir. I am pleased to meet Antonio''s side of the family," I replied. "You are my niece, same as my daughter. You don''t need to be formal with me." I smiled at his words and after a bit of some talking, Antonio then spoke. "Rea, meet my daughter, Arya." "Arya, meet my wife, Rea." We both looked at each other. She was so cute and adorable in her white dress, her hair styled in two buns, and her eye color exactly the same as Antonio''s and his uncle. "Arya will be staying with us from now on." Before I could greet, Arya gave me a hug. The three of us were shocked. "See?" Uncle said, "I told you she will be happy with Rea." As much as I refuse to show emotion, Arya broke my walls in a few seconds. Kneeling down, I returned the hug and she wrote a little text on her board. "So, you can''t speak?" She handed me her board, wanting me to reply. "Something like that." Arya nodded in understanding. "So we are just the same then!" I smiled as I wrote, "Yes - yes, we are!" She then gave Antonio her board and I couldn''t help it but laugh at the scene. Antonio was blank, Alejandro (uncle) was impressed and I was enjoying her company. Jackie called for Arya and she signed that she was coming back before she ran to Jackie. "She adores you, Rea," Antonio said, looking at me. "She took after you a lot," I replied, "Her eyes look like yours." I then received a message on my watch. It was from the very unknown number. Luckily my old phone number was connected to my watch. "See you tied the knot with De Luca - well, your fate has been tied with his..." I stared intently at my watch, waiting for his next messages, or rather threat. "Watch Antonio take his last breath in your arms tonight." "Rea?" Antonio called out, "Are you okay?" I nodded, and after thanking the officiator again, we all walked out and went our separate ways. I went with Arya back home. She must have woken up early in the morning, so she was already asleep. By the next stop, I quickly checked the boot to see if there was a blanket Antonio left inside. To which there was. "Prepared Antonio," I said, locking the boot. Getting inside, I placed the blanket on Arya. Then my phone vibrated. It was the number. "Antonio is currently in a business meeting and it''s only 1pm... 4 hours before he kicks the bucket!" "That can''t happen," I thought to myself. "You think it won''t happen?" Another message got in, "Wait for it at 7pm." ***I was pacing up and down the house. It was 7 and Antonio was not back home. Should I bring some first aid? Will it really happen? Luckily, Arya was asleep so I wouldn''t worry her too much. Jackie noticed my worry and reassured me that Antonio is fine. But I couldn''t. Not with the message that I got. "Antonio please tell me you''re fine..." 7 hours later I didn''t realize that I fell asleep on the couch when I heard the door open. Antonio - wounded, and full of blood, was helped by his men. As Jackie ran to Antonio, I heard myself call our Antonio''s name. "Antonio." Jackie and Antonio looked at me before breaking the gaze. So it was true. Antonio was going to get hurt. "Die in your arms." But no way was he going to die in my arms tonight. I ran to get the first aid kit. My doctor skills were coming in handy. "Rea-" "Shhh," I said, applying some surgical spirit to his wounds. I felt eyes on me as I performed first aid on Antonio. It felt good doing this after a while, since I was ''banned'' from my job. After bandaging his wounds, I checked if they were any gun wounds. "Did they shoot you?" I asked, showing him my text on my phone. "Luckily, no," he replied. I let out a sigh of relief. Packing it away, Antonio looked at me. "You look surprised," I said. "You shock me every time Rea," he said. "How so?" I asked. "How did you know I would be injured?" "It was just a hunch," I answered. I knew he was going to know sooner or later, but I too needed to find out who the person harming Antonio was. With a smile, I wrote, "I am glad you''re okay." Putting his hands on mine, he replied, "I''m glad too. All thanks to you." His men then helped carry him to his room but he grabbed hold of my hand. "Huh?" I heard myself ask. "We are married, are we not?" Chapter 3 - Antonio And Rea I stood by the door as Antonio got ready for bed. "Come." He gestured at the space he left for me to sleep. "I don''t bite." I tightened my gown belt as I felt chills run through my spine. Goodbye room, goodbye freedom. I slowly approached the bed as I kept my eye on Antonio. All of a sudden he was carefree. Stepping inside, Antonio pulled me in. "Antonio!" We were both taken aback. I looked at Antonio, while he smirked. "So you do have a voice," he said. "I am not exactly mute, you know?" I said. "I know." "Your father told me." I felt my stomach churn as I thought of my father. He was not a bad man, but I hoped to forget my grandma. And everything she said. I turned my back on Antonio. "Don''t hide yourself from me." I took a few seconds, before turning to look at him. It felt awkward, but I just needed to shut my eyes in order for the awkwardness to numb away. "Rea?" "Hmm?" "The world won''t disappear if you speak up, the people who care about you won''t leave you if you speak." I stared at him. "What I am saying is that whatever trauma you went through, speak about it." He then looked at me. "Using your voice." I let out a breath. No matter how I much I try. The trauma still haunts me. "One day," Antonio added. I pulled the blankets strong enough to cover him. "Running away I see," he said. "Night," I said, closing my eyes. "Good night." ***It was morning and I was expecting the bed to myself when I heard someone typing away. Antonio, of course. "Good morning." Whatever Antonio did to make me speak, was powerful. But I know it wasn''t any magic that did a thing. My mutism was selective, meaning there are times I can speak freely, and freely meant with Antonio. "Morning," I said with a low voice. I woke up and was about to open the door when Antonio spoke. "I am going to the hospital today." I looked at him. "You can come if you want." The hospital he took me away from? As much as I was upset, I wanted to see how it was after I stopped working a few days ago. I nodded. I walked out and clutched my hand to my chest after closing the door. "Happy first day!" I turned to look at Jackie, who had a small grin on her face. "Thanks," I said as I went downstairs. I made Antonio and I coffee and soon Arya came downstairs, waving at us. "Did you sleep well?" I wrote, asking her. She nodded. "Where''s dad?" "Upstairs." I subconsciously spoke. Shocking Arya and Jackie. "You can speak!" Arya signed, happily. I wished she also had selective mutism like myself. "I have selective mutism," I signed, "There are times where I feel overwhelmed to speak and times I can speak without worry." "Well, I am happy for you," Jackie said, "And I hope you can speak fully one day." "Thanks," I said. After handing Arya her strawberry milk, I took the coffee mugs and together with Arya, we went upstairs, heading back to the room. Antonio, as soon as he saw Arya, he put his laptop aside and picked up Arya taking her to the balcony. Their relationship was so wholesome, I couldn''t help myself but take pictures. Walking up to them, I handed Antonio his mug, while I sipped on mine. "Thanks," he said. We watched the horizon in silence. The morning breeze was so fresh, I appreciated Antonio''s choice of residence. In the city, but not too close to the noise. One could enjoy the fresh air, far from the noise and city problems. If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. ***We were heading to the hospital with Arya. A lot of thoughts ran through my head. All my workmates would know I married Antonio. Maybe they would think I left the hospital to marry the owner?! What if- "No need to panic Rea." I heard Antonio reassure me. "They will be happy to see you." His observation skills were impressive, no wonder he owns a hospital - he could be a doctor himself. "Thanks," I said. We got to the hospital and everyone watched us as we got in. Gasps were heard but we broken by applause from everyone. I never liked being the center of attention but Rena upon seeing me, have me a warm hug. "Ah, Rea, I am so happy to see you again!" "Me too," I spoke. She pulled away to look at me. "I am happy to see you too." "You... your selective..." She hugged me again. Gosh, she nearly made me cry. "I''m proud of you." She then filled me in on what has been happening and I introduced her to Arya. "My daughter." "Aw! You look so cute! Just like Mommy." I stole a glance at Arya. I knew she looked like Antonio, but no way she looked like me. She nodded. "Too kind," I said. "Truth." I thought I heard Arya speak, so I asked again. "What did you say?" She simply shook her head. "I am sure she said something, like ''truth''," I said to myself, questioning my hearing. After saying our goodbyes to Rena, Antonio took us to... "My office." My office. The office he said had a substitute. "Substitute?" I asked. "Why would I put a substitute for the best psychiatrist?" I laughed as I looked around in my office. Everything looked the same as it was. I walked to the picture of my family and I. Taking the picture off the frame, I hid it in my drawer and went out. "Coming," I said. I went and printed a picture of Antonio, Arya and I on our wedding day and returning back to my office, I put the picture in the frame. "Arya," I said, Look." Pointing at the picture, she smiled. "It''s us!" Antonio and I exchanged looks. She subconsciously spoke. "Yes Arya," Antonio spoke, "It''s us." Antonio''s uncle, Alejandro came and Antonio told us we would be under his company for the day. He then left for work. It felt good to be in my office. Although not working in it, but being inside took me back to the good times. *Beep* It was a notification from the number. "Antonio has survived I see... will he survive today?" The person was back with another threat. "Right at 5pm." This person always kept me on my toes. That would be the time Antonio would be picking Arya and I up at. "Leave him alone. If you have a problem with me, face me, not Antonio." "Feeling strong now that you''re a De Luca huh?" "Rea?" Uncle asked, "You good?" "Yes, uncle," I spoke, "Thanks." Shocked yet impressed, he nodded. "Time is ticking!" I looked at the time on the wall clock. It was 10:45 am. 7 hours were left before Antonio could come back. I had to be ready by then. "Will see about that," I texted back, before exiting messages. We will see about that. ***While uncle Alejandro showed Arya the ins and outs of the hospital, I remained in my office, thinking about the time that was left for Antonio to come fetch us. I checked the weather forecast and it said that it would be rainy with thunderstorms. Another message got in. "In 5 more minutes!" As soon as uncle got back, I stood up to leave. "Where are you going?" He asked, "It just started raining." "Emergency." "Emergency?" "Emergency, just a small thing, nothing big." "Okay," he said, although skeptical. Running out, I saw others gathering. I went out but was stopped by Rena. "Where are you going, it''s raining-" "Accident," I said, "Has Antonio arrived?" "Um, yeah, a few seconds ago? He just parked his car on the side of the road and is about to- Rea, no!" I ran out the moment I heard that he was crossing the road. He could die any moment from now, and I didn''t want that to happen. It truly was raining cats and dogs outside. The wind along with the rain covered my eyes that it took me some time to locate Antonio. Tears filled my eyes, having to do this felt tiring already but out of love for Antonio, I would do anything - even if it means sacrificing my life. I then saw Antonio, and to my left, a car approaching him. It was speeding directly at him. Dropping my phone, I ran to him and screamed his name. "Antonio!" He caught sight of me. I looked at the car approaching and then at him. Seeing what was about to take place, he dropped his phone and ran up to me instead. "Rea!" "Antonio, NO!" The car also swerved, heading for our direction. We both pulled each other what one could say, ''out of harm''s way'' and rolled all the way to the hospital. I stood up, Antonio and I looking into each other''s eyes but quickly broke eye contact due to being in a large crowd (hospital staff and their gossips) I tried to hold my ground, helping Antonio too. He went out to see the person that caused the accident while I stayed inside. "Rea!" Rena ran up to me with a look of concern. Psychiatrist at heart. "That was one heavy risk you took for Antonio," she said, "You could have died!" I shook my head. She couldn''t understand why I did that for Antonio - he himself must be shocked as well. The threats that I receive about Antonio... Would anyone understand, if I told them? I decided not to tell anyone for the time being. Antonio seemed to be driven by something as well - I guess we both had our own secrets. "I''m fine," I said with a low voice. Before she could ask further questions, she was called by her other workmates to the office. "I have to go back now, sorry I can''t stay with you longer," she said. I hugged her in assurance not to worry about me. She seemed skeptical but rather went with the flow. I appreciated her for not being pushy. "But call me anytime, okay?" "Okay," I replied, waving her off as she heading into the hallway. All the other workers were still capturing the scene - especially Giulia. She always had a thing for Antonio and was the bully of the hospital. She thought her richness could earn her a spot in our ranks so since that is never the case with Deluca, she always targeted us. Me especially. Before she could think of something, Antonio came back in, a worried look on his face. "Are you injured?" He asked. I had scratches there and there, but I couldn''t call them injuries. I shook my head. "Are you sure?" He asked. With a faint smile, I nodded. Giulia was glaring at me, and if Antonio sensed that, he simply made it worse by giving me a hug, which I returned. Soon, Alejandro and Arya came to see what the commotion was all about when they caught sight of us. "Antonio, Rea, what happened?" I searched for my phone, and Antonio doing the same. I was about to go outside when he handed me his other phone. I thought he dropped it outside but he always seemed to have a spare. "Antonio nearly got in an accident." "What?" He asked, "By who?" "You know how they are uncle, they wear black outfits, you can''t even tell how their facials are," Antonio replied. One thing I realized we did, was to hide our wounds. According to what I heard from Jackie, Alejandro is very rough when it comes to injury on Antonio''s part. Alicia, Antonio''s aunt, was the same. They never talk of her but I wondered how she was like. Was she comedic? Like uncle Alejandro? Or more logical? "Are you hurt anywhere?" Alejandro asked the both of us. We shook our heads, "No." After telling everyone to knock off early except those who were on night shifts and hiring more guards did he then allow himself to leave. "I will take the three of you home." "I can still drive-" "Let your uncle help his stubborn nephew and niece." Antonio and I exchanged looks. "Yes," Alejandro said, "You are both stubborn." He then got to the driver''s seat, while we sat at the back, Arya sitting in the middle. "That''s weird," Alejandro said, looking at me through the mirror, "How did you know, Rea, that Antonio would have an accident?" Chapter 4 - Untold Secrets "How did you, Rea, know that Antonio would get into an accident?" Trying to think of a reason, Antonio spoke in my behalf. "She saw me and the car that was coming." I looked at him. "There was a commotion in the entrance anyway, so when she saw the speeding car and me crossing the road, she ran to save me. Seeing what situation was unfolding, I saved her too - we practically saved each other." "It still doesn''t make sense, since Rea went out at the very same time the accident nearly happened." "Can we please save the talk for another time?" "Okay," he said, sighing in defeat, "If only you could tell me, you would see there are many things I know about." ***We were at the Villa and I took Arya out, since she fell asleep and after saying goodbye to Alejandro, he spoke again. "Antonio, Rea?" We looked at him. "There are secrets you both keep from each other. If you could speak about them, and involve me in what''s happening, this calamities could be dealt with in a day." "Uncle-" Antonio spoke but got interrupted by him again. "There''s more success when more advisors are included in decision-making, right?" Leaving us with that sobering question, he drove away. Jackie took Arya in while I followed behind Antonio. As soon as we got inside, I stood by the stairs, my strength failing me. I guess it had been a while since I last had such action packed life events like these, that I collapsed. And I saw black. Antonio Rea collapsed and I went up to her. It''s been a while, in fact, years since she last dealt with such action in her life. She must have been exhausted physically and mentally. Carrying her to our room, I told everyone that I would take care of everything and Jackie brought me the first aid kit. "Thanks," I said as she handed the kit over to me before heading out. There were many wounds to take care of, I am not surprised she didn''t tell me. "You are so stubborn Rea," I said. It made me remember uncle''s words. "You are both stubborn." I chuckled as I dressed up her wounds. Some on her neck, leg, and arm. Putting a blanket over her, I was about to pack up and take the kit back when Rea grabbed my hand. "Don''t... go," she said. Rea was more of a reserved person, never gives in to her emotion, but seeing her in this state, I wonder if she will remember this tomorrow. I could see her flustered side already. "Okay," I said, "Sitting on the floor, close to her, "I won''t go." Her grip was tight yet gentle. She looked so peaceful when she was asleep.Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation. "Ah." I then remembered what I wanted to search. Selective mutism. "Selective mutism is a learning disability that causes a person to become mute in certain situations or environments." "When does it occur?" I asked, typing using one hand. "To any person. Both young and old." Rea said that she had trauma... was it from her father? Or a family member? Don''t let it (her trauma) get to you Rea. ***Rea I woke up and headed downstairs to the kitchen. Jackie looked at me with a smug smile. "Someone received some special care." I widened my eyes as I touched my neck, looked at my arm and leg. Antonio dressed my wounds, and he didn''t mention anything. "Want some coffee?" Jackie asked, "It''s ready." "Yes please," I said as I sat by the kitchen counter. While I enjoyed my coffee, I decided to text Antonio. "Thanks for the..." A funny way to put it... "Special care yesterday. I really appreciate it." Sending it, I also attached a thank you sticker that I designed. I never thought I would use it. "Read." I slammed my phone on the counter, making Jackie jump. "Sorry," I said sheepishly as I took my coffee mug, trying to forget what I sent Antonio. Antonio I was in a business meeting with one of my twin brother''s business partners back in Korea. He was always happy to introduce them to me. They were pitching an idea to see if they could open their companies in Italy. As they continued with their pitch, I received a message from Rea. "Thank you for the special care yesterday. I really appreciate it." Along with a Gacha version of herself saying thank you. I chuckled at the message, everyone diverting their attention to me. "Carry on," I said, trying to keep everyone focused on the meeting. I stared at my phone and after some time, sent a personalized smiley face in response. ***"Who got you chuckling and blushing during the pitch?" My twin brother, Arnaldo, asked. "No need for you to know," I said with a smirk on my face, "You wouldn''t even understand." "Hey, I understand Korean without being originally born in Korea," he replied, "Tell me." "I will tell you one day," I said. "Come on!" Rea He sent a Gacha smiley face of himself? I laughed, or rather, giggled at the sight of this. Was I really enjoying this? "Is it from Antonio?" Jackie, who snuck up on me from behind asked. I nodded continuously, "Look!" I showed her the smiley face he sent. "A different side of Antonio for sure," I heard her say. That''s when I realized, That I showed Antonio a different side of me; a happy, open side of me. Evening Antonio was back home much earlier than expected, but we enjoyed dinner as a family nevertheless. We were surprised to see who the person at the door was, but we welcomed him anyway. "How are my stubborn kids doing?" Antonio and I sighed while Arya laughed. "Fine," we said in unison. "Well, I come bearing gifts." He handed us invitations to the business awards held in Portugal. Antonio looked at me before turning to look at Alejandro. "But this is short notice," he said. "Not when you will be receiving an award!" "Says who?" Antonio asked. "Says the stats! Before Antonio could question any further, he then received a phone call. "Answer it." Answering it, he got up and went to a quiet area, leaving Alejandro with Arya and I. "I thought you said you were not injured." I touched my neck. "Antonio thought it would be better to cover my scratches. They are merely scratches." "Hmm," he said, as if not convinced. Before I could wonder into space, Antonio came back on time. "I have been chosen for the Italy Business Awards?" Antonio asked. "Why is it held in Portugal then?" I asked. "Different scenery purposes, Rea and yes you have been chosen best businessman of the year, Antonio." Arya and I clapped hands for Antonio. "So pack your bags... excluding Arya." Antonio and I looked at him, "Why not?" Antonio asked. "That''s okay," Arya signed as she went down from her seat and walked out with uncle." Then Alejandro whispered to us, "Spend some time together, okay?" He then walked out, leaving us flustered and with a lot of questions. Chapter 5 - The Message (2) I went with Antonio to one of his business awards. He was going to receive best businessman of the year. He deserved it - he always works hard for his employees and businesses. Our dress code this time was black. I wore my black silk dress by Designer Blaire. The best designer in Italy. Arriving at the entrance, there were a lot of cameras flashing at us. Antonio always helped me get through, so I was better able to handle them. As soon as we got inside the ballroom, Antonio was surrounded by tons of people, who some of them noticed me and greeted me. Antonio did his best to validate my presence, so I met him halfway by finding a seat for us, a bit closer to the stage. Never have I attended a family friendly event but I was happy to meet up with kids I have helped and were once my little patients. Their parents thanking me for their work touched me along with reuniting with my former workmates. I met up with Rena again. She was always the friend who always sent me messages to check up on me. "Rea!" I waved at her as I ran up to her, giving her a tight hug. I learn to slowly start speaking again. "So, how have you been? With the new family and stuff?" "Great, I can''t complain," I replied. My attention changed from her to Antonio, who also looked at me. Before we could get caught, we both averted our gazes, mine shifting back to Rena immediately. Rena then asked. "Antonio De Luca... (Pointing at him) Is that him? Your husband?" "Yes," I replied, "In the flesh." After we had a nice conversation, the event then began. The awards were given and I made sure to record it (for personal keepings). After the event ended, Mr. Russo - owner of the hospital in the other district in Italy, came to congratulate Antonio. "Congratulations are in order, Mr. De Luca," he said, giving him a handshake, "I know your father would be pleased to see how far you have come since you left the empire." Antonio was a bit disgusted by his words but thanked him nevertheless. "Thank you Mr. Russo, that''s kind of you," Antonio replied. He then looked at me differently, as if his interest was piqued. "Ah! And who do we have here? Your fianc¨¦e?" He asked jokingly. I took a glass from one of the waiters and gulped the drink down in one go. "My wife, in fact." But I nearly choked on my last gulp. It felt different being called by that title, but I managed to control myself so as not to attract attention. "Interesting," he said. He looked at me seriously that if looks could kill, I would be dead by now. Did he have his daughter in mind? "Will catch you later, Luca," he said as he walked away with his men. "Bye Angelo," said Antonio. I looked at Antonio. So many things were running in my mind. What did he mean when he said Antonio left the empire? Was Antonio close to Angelo, or was it simply through his father that he knew him? Antonio saw a few people in the ballroom dance. He looked at me and offered his hand. "Care to dance?" I nodded. Antonio took me to the dance floor. An instrumental was playing and Antonio assured me that he would help. One thing he didn''t know was that my father taught me way before I was even 18. As we danced, the song reached a particular climax that made me show my full dancing potential, leaving him in awe. "So you can slow dance?" I replied, "Of course." Expecting him to be shocked, he was rather impressed, a smirk growing on his face. I was the one confused instead. "And you are using your voice." I nodded. "Why were you silent most of the time?" He asked, "Scared I knew your secret?" "No," I spoke again, "I am rather surprised by your reaction." "I can''t be shocked by such things." "But I have lived with selective for such a long time, only to for me to break out of it now, are you sure you are not a bit angry or betrayed?"Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. "If I told you I knew what caused you to become selectively mute, would you believe me?" I was taken aback by his words, but shook my head. "No I wouldn''t." "Really?" He asked again. "Of course, you have tons of connections to find everything about me, I wouldn''t be surprised," I replied. "Okay then." He then looked at me, this time, with a soft look that nearly got me melting. But his words were the ones that brought my trauma back. "It is because of your grandma''s words at one of your father''s Villa when you were young, right? The day your father''s Villa exploded?" I stared at him, unable to protest. I knew he is Antonio De Luca. I knew he could gather any secret about me. I never lied about being selectively mute, I just never told him the reason behind it. Well, he did know that it was truama, but he didn''t know the true story of the trauma. However, he didn''t look upset or anything... perhaps it was because he was in a public space. "Why are you so smug? Aren''t you supposed to express some emotion? If I were you, I would be-" *Bang* A loud explosion was heard. I fell down on my knees, covering my ears. This took me back to where my trauma began. Flashback I was with my father along with our family in our Villa when an explosion happened. We all ran out while my father called a brigade. I was reaching for the door when my grandma pulled me back. As I struggled for air, she shouted. "Why are you still alive?!" "I wish you died with your mother!" End of flashback As people rushed out, Antonio remained with me, trying to reassure me that he was not going to leave me. "Mr Antonio!" Mr. Russo came rushing to us. He looked at me and nearly broke me apart from Antonio when Antonio gently pulled me closer to him. "Rea is staying with me." "But Mr. De Luca-" "She''s my wife." "But the explosion-" "She is under my care," Antonio interrupted once more. "Everyone is being evict-" "I''m fine!" Antonio and Mr. Russo looked at me. Antonio pleased, while Mr. Russo surprised. "Okay then," he said running out. As soon as he left, Antonio helped me get up and with a impressed smile, he said, "You stood up for yourself." I looked at him. "I''m proud of you Rea." I smiled a bit. Antonio then led us to another emergency exit where there was a car waiting for us. When I turned around, he was gone. I got inside the car, which was when I received a message from the same number. Opening it, it said: "How much do you love your daughter? Or... husband? Meet me in the entrance of the burning fire." As I was about to make a run for it, another message came in. "Be careful! You have 2 minutes to make it in time!" "Argh, this number," I said as I left my bag, tied up my hair and got out of the car. "Mrs De Luca, wait!" I ran to the entrance of the burning fire and ran into it, pushing anyone that stood in my way. Getting in, I nearly got engulfed by the smoke but I used my elbow to get me through. It was going to be difficult locating them without my phone but I had to depend on my watch for any messages. "Antonio, Arya!" I shouted. I then ran deeper into the building. Did I care if I was injured? No. As long as Arya and Antonio were safe, that''s all that mattered. Antonio "Rea did what?!" I knew I disappeared on her as she ran to the car but her sacrificing her life for me was not part of the plan. "Where did she run to?" "The main entrance of the building." "Thanks-" "There''s a message that was left on her phone sir." I never wanted to snoop on her phone but I had to know what made her come. This had been happening more than once... twice to be exact. I was about to ask when, "On second thought, don''t tell me - she will do so when she is ready." "Okay sir." I then dropped the call. I wanted to earn Rea''s trust, and checking through her phone was no way to do so. Having Arya come to the event unexpectedly meant that she was either held hostage or she willingly came on her own. How come did the call inform me that Arya''s life was in danger? Just then, I heard someone shout my name, and Arya''s. "Arya, Antonio!" "Rea!" I shouted back. I ran to the main entrance route and I could see a shadowy figure running in circles. Rea was looking for Arya and myself. Looking up, I then saw a plank wood that was about to fall directly at Rea. Using all my strength, I ran to her as fast as I could. "REA!" She turned to look at me while I ducked her down and rolled her to the side, covering her head. We then stood up and before I could check any injuries, I heard a beeping sound in one of the planks. It had a timer of 1 minute 4 seconds (counting) and a small scream. Rea and I glanced at each other. "Arya!" Rea We shouted Arya''s name and ran to where the sound came from. It was on the podium, close to the fire, and another bomb. We stood there, thinking of a quicker plan to get ourselves out of the fire. "You got here in time, Rea," said one of the men. They were all dressed in black that I couldn''t see their faces because of the smoke and clothing. "Antonio De Luca. I wish you knew who brought all these calamities on you." Antonio kept silent, but my focus was on how to save Arya. I fell on my knees, meeting her gaze and Antonio didn''t look back but rather kept his eyes on the men. I signed at Arya on how to get away. "Move back." "Three steps left." "Two steps back." "Look at me and wait for my sign." I stared at one of the others, almost pulling a staring contest. I then signed for Arya to run away which was saved with a cough. I then saw Arya run to me and I ran to her, giving her a hug. Antonio kept the men distracted. I then saw the timer on one of the bombs. 15 seconds. "That quick?!" I thought to myself. I picked up Arya and Antonio followed. They then started counting. 10... 9... 8... Seeing the exit in front of us, it was then blocked. As if someone planned this on purpose. Antonio kicked the doors open and the place would blow up at any given moment. 3... 2... 1... Using my strength, we opened the door and Antonio pulled us close as the place went up in flames. Chapter 6 - Antonio De Luca Antonio I called the team to come as Rea was unconscious. It must have been because of the trauma, I was impressed by Rea''s bravery. She really loved Arya (and myself) very much. She overcame her trauma and Arya asked if Rea was going to make it. "Rea simply passed out Arya, she is still alive." "Okay," she replied, a mixture of fear and relief. It then sank in. Arya spoke. "What did you say?" I asked Arya to repeat what she asked. She simply stared at me. I was sure she said something. 1 hour later After asking Uncle to take Arya home, I sat alone, waiting for Rea. Some time later, I saw two nurses approaching me with Rea on a wheelchair. I stood up. "Mrs De Luca is doing good and no sign of any injuries, thanks to you." "What do you mean?" I saw them look at Rea but then nodding. "We will take our leave. She can go home anytime from now." "Thank you-" Just then, Rea stood up slowly and hugged me. I froze in place for a few seconds before returning the hug. "Were-" "I''m glad you''re okay." I tightened the hug after hearing her words, "I am glad you are okay too." After some time of emotional intimacy, we then went home. She fell asleep so quickly that I myself was sleepy for the first time. As soon as we got home, Rea was fast asleep. Carrying her in, I was met with Jackie seated by the counter table. "Is Arya okay?" I asked. "She is well and asleep sir," she replied, "How is Rea?" "No injuries, and all tests came out normal and good. She simply passed out from the fire." But the most impact was the trauma that flashbacked as soon as the explosion happened. I called my assistant, Aulo. "Yes sir?" "Please get me information on Rea Bianchi." "Yes." ***Rea I woke up being in bed. I looked around for Antonio but he was nowhere to be seen. I then heard the door opening. I quickly closed my eyes, pretending I was asleep. I could feel Antonio''s eyes on me. I could feel his presence more closer, my heart stopping for a second. He leaned to the right and I opened my eyes. "You thought I would do something?" He asked, a chuckle coming out of him.The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. "No." "Were you awake this entire time?" "I just woke up," I replied, "What happened?" "You were asleep as soon as we got home. I carried you here." "Oh?" I asked, "Well, thanks." We fell silent. He switched off the lights and the room immediately went pitch black. "Antonio?" I called out. "I''m here," he replied, holding my hand, "Are you... scared of the dark?" "No, but I just wanted to feel your presence." He kept quiet until he got into bed. "Your results came back," he said, "They were good." I nodded. "And about what you said." I looked at [him] though it was dark. "You are starting to open up." "Well, I was thinking about Alejandro''s words. About us keeping secrets." "True, but I feel like it takes time." "Time to do what?" I asked. "To open up and speak about what is truly in our hearts," he replied. "..." "Rea?" "Hmm?" "Since I won''t be going to work due to my injuries, why don''t we go out?" "Where?" I asked. "Just the two of us, and about the place, it''s a surprise." "Sure," I said, "I would like that." ... It felt more awkward but comforting being in the dark. I was about to speak when Antonio beat me to it first. "Antonio, I-" "Rea, I-" "You go first-" "Ladies first." I smiled a bit, grateful that Antonio couldn''t see. "It''s nice hearing your voice." "You think?" I asked. He chuckled. "Well, I wanted to say thank you for helping me." "I''m confused." I tilted my head, puzzled by his statement. "You are my wife, Rea. I would always throw myself in the fire to rescue you." "Even in a room full of snakes?" I asked. "Even in an ocean of water." "That can happen," I muttered. "But," he spoke, "Thank you for rescuing me and Arya. Not just once but three times." "You are welcome," I said, not wanting to say much. "But there has to be some motive behind it, right?" I could feel myself heating up. "Good night Antonio," I said, fixing my pillow and turned to the other side. "Don''t turn your back on me ma''am." I thought he was joking until I turned and met his eyes. "More like it," he said, "Let''s sleep like this every night, okay?" "Okay." I forced my eyes shut and tried sleeping. Antonio, then placed his arm around my head, patting my head. He took hold of my hand as well. "Good night, Rea." "Good night." Then, within seconds, sleep washed over me. ***Morning came and I was still tired. Perhaps it was the two days, or rather three days of restlessness that I felt tired for the first time. We were still in bed, and in the same position we slept in since last night. I looked at Antonio, who looked so peaceful. "What am I doing Rea?!" I shouted at myself internally. I then shut my eyes but only to hear a chuckle from Antonio. "So Rea can be soft," he said, looking at me, "Good morning." "Morning," I replied, "And besides, I am human too." We then heard the door opening and we both closed our eyes. "They are still asleep?" I heard Alejandro ask himself. He was the only person who could rock up in the house and open doors. I refrained myself from laughing but Antonio pulled the blankets to cover us. Opening my eyes slowly, I saw Antonio with a smile on his face. I subconsciously smiled back too, surprising him a bit. "Did you want to see them, or...?" We heard Jackie ask. "No. I wanted to see how long they can keep pretending to sleep." "Argh." We removed the blankets and looked at uncle, annoyed. He, instead, had a grin on his face. "Good to see the family is doing well," he said. "You are disturbing us," Antonio said, letting out a sigh. In seconds, his expression turned serious. "I need to take you both somewhere, so be quick," he said as he walked out of our room. "Why?" Antonio and I asked, both of us exchanging looks. "It is with regards to the De Luca Empire." Antonio then became stiff. "Get ready." Chapter 7 - Deeper Connection Alejandro brought us to another big Villa. Same size as Antonio and close to the same design, a number of cars were lined up and I assumed they were Antonio''s family. There were many things yet to be discovered. Walking inside the Villa, I saw an entourage of people in black. What a coincidence. Since Antonio and I wore black too. "Is this for pretense to be public eye?" I asked With a smirk, he replied, "You got it." "So this is the reason for Antonio''s smiles." Looking to the person who spoke, he looked like a clone of Antonio. My hand - without second guessing - reached Antonio''s. I looked at him, then at the other figure. "You both look the same... twins?" I asked. "More like triplets," he replied, walking up to us and reaching his hand out to us, "My name is Arnaldo De Luca. Second brother of Antonio. Walking clone." I let out a chuckle, "You accept that phrase as well?" I asked, "Walking clone?" "What can I say my sister, I am right after Antonio." "Now you have met him," Antonio said. "Scared I would pose as you?" Arnaldo said, folding his arms, "I can be a pretty good Antonio imposter." "You never can, no matter how well deceiving it is." They both looked at me. "Antonio has his way of doing things, getting certain jobs done and his way of reacting to certain things that makes him unique. I have learnt them and if you were to be an imposter, I would definitely notice." "Ahh," Arnaldo said, "So your wife is stalking you too?" I flushed in embarrassment, stuttering as I tried to explain myself. "No! I-I have been with him for a long time now, and I am a fast learner, so I get to know how he is quickly - not in a creepy way or anything like that-" "He''s teasing you, don''t worry. This is why I didn''t want you to know." "You may be oldest, but I still have emotions okay?" "Antonio, Arnaldo, Rea, come," Alejandro called us, his voice firm and serious, "We have a lot to discuss." Walking towards him, I met with Antonio''s aunts and other cousins. One of the aunts looked at me with disgust. I was used to such treatment but as long as I stood out if her way, she would hopefully keep her hate to herself. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. "We need to convince Andrea to shut the empire down." "He would, if he had a wife beside him!" "Please, what wife? What happened to the girl he had? Left him and now he is in this mess alone. Wives brought to the family are a disgrace to the De Luca family." She - Aunt Camila - looked at me. "For someone mute as you, I wonder what help would you bring in this situation." "Camila," Antonio spoke, "Don''t speak to my wife in that tone." Camila taken back but not shaken, "I am being honest." "Honest? Please, you haven''t even covered the basics." She looked at me, including the other family members. "Let me update you on your... misconceptions. First, I am selectively mute, and even if I was mute, I can hear. Second, I am one of your own now, meaning I am on your side. Third, my selective mutism can be an advantage on our side, so why don''t we tough it out and be friends for now, no?" Alejandro impressed, Arnaldo nodding in agreement, and Antonio proud. "You heard my wife. She is one of us, so no bad talk, okay Aunt Camila?" "Fine," Camila replied, folding her arms. After the meeting concluded, I stood up and called Jackie to check up on Arya. I felt another presence walk behind me but I didn''t mind on whoever it was. "Thanks Arya, see you soon." Dropping the call, I turned around to see Antonio behind me. "How is Arya?" Antonio asked. "She''s good, currently eating some ice cream." I laughed and Antonio joined in a light chuckle. "That little one," Antonio said. "Antonio." We both turned to see Aunt Camila. Giving Antonio and her aunt space, I walked away. Antonio "So your wife is selectively mute?" Camila asked. "Yes, and?" I asked, "The point?" "She is the daughter of Ronaldi Bianchi. How sure can we trust her?" "That''s her father we are talking about. This is my wife you are talking about." "But still, what if she turns her back on us afterwards?" "Deal with your insecurities Aunt, but I know that Rea won''t betray me. She will be by my side." "Oh, you are blinded by love Antonio," she said, "Remember how her father betrayed you? Then gave her daughter to us? How do we know they didn''t make a deal-" "Aunt Camila," I spoke, "I appreciate the concern, but I trust Rea. And yes, I am blinded by love, but I am not blinded enough to see a person''s worth." Unable to protest, she gave a nod, "If you say so." "Thank you," I said as I walked away and joined Rea who was waiting by herself by the door. Rea I saw Antonio walk towards me after what seemed like an eternity. Surely, Aunt Camila didn''t trust me, but my dad''s betrayal (which I never knew about) had nothing to do with me. I hated involving myself in such... shenanigans but to help Antonio, I would. We walked to the car and drove off in silence. I stared outside the window, admiring the rows of trees lined up almost perfectly on both sides of the road. "I am sorry about Aunt Camila''s words back there," Antonio spoke, keeping his eyes on the road, "She is a sharp-tongued person." "That''s okay," I replied, "Trust needs to built, and we will get there one day-" "Still, the way she spoke to you was unwelcomed. I told her." I looked at Antonio. "I am just your wife Antonio," I said, brushing his words off. "Yes, you are my wife." He gave me a short glance before taking his eyes back on the road, "You are worth more than just a title." I chuckled, then adjusted myself to look at him, "You are way more softer than you realize." "Only for you and Arya," he replied with a smirk, "Not even my family knows this side of me." "Hard to believe," I said, folding my arms, "Doesn''t the saying go, ''Charity begins at home'' prove true in almost every household?" I asked. "Not in mine," Antonio replied, "It is more like, ''Charity begins where home is''." I looked at him puzzled, "Interesting. What does Mr. De Luca mean by that unique phrase?" I asked teasingly. "It means home is where my wife and daughter is." He then looked at me, "Where you are." I subconsciously gave him a smile, then made him turn his attention back to the road, "We need to stay alive for Arya, okay?" He smiled, though not looking at me, clearly enjoying the conversation as I was. Chapter 8 - Deeper Secrets Arriving home, Antonio went back to work while I went with Arya to the bedroom. She looked tired, though not wanting to show it. I looked at her. "I am not tired," she signed, yawning though she was tired. "I know," I signed back, "Well, I am going to sleep." I was tired anyway, so why not? I closed my eyes, and after a few minutes, Arya joined me. She came closer to me and slept within minutes. I smiled as I pulled her close and drifted to sleep. It felt surreal being happy, content, and at peace. Though it wasn''t going to be like this forever. Antonio I spoke with my uncle, who didn''t have an agenda. I listened to his conversation nonetheless. "You better take care of Rea, okay?" he asked, "She is a rare gem." "I will," I said as I ended our conversation. Going back to my work, I decided to find more information on Ronaldi De Luca. His death was strange to think of, considering how he died in his own Villa. Rea was not there at the time, since she was at the hospital. When officials went to check on the Villa, all the rooms were damaged but there was no sign of a body. I called my brother, Arnaldo to ask him to check him out. "You think he could have faked his death and what? Escaped to Korea?" he asked. "I believe so," I replied, "Or at least close to Korea. Like Japan or China." "Is there anyone in Asia that he or Rea is related to?" "Her grandma - his mom, is in Japan. Check her out, and report back to me." "It must be nice being the oldest, bossing your second-in-command around." "Arnaldo-" "Okay, I will try my best, okay?" he said, before dropping the call. Secrecy isn''t the essence of a marriage, but it is better to be sure of information than to make false assumptions. Before I could leave the office, I received a message from a number. "100-105-101" "Antonio De Luca, son of the renowned Empire Don, Alexander De Luca. Spouse Rea Bianchi and niece''s name Arya De Luca. The third brother went AWOL from the family and Arnaldo in Korea. I have news for you. Answer my call." The number then called and I answered. I kept silent as I waited for the caller to speak. "Antonio De Luca," the voice spoke. "What do you want from my family?" I asked. "Straight to business I see," he said. This narrative has been purloined without the author''s approval. Report any appearances on Amazon. His voice was automated like he used a voice changer and that didn''t surprise me. I waited for him to say his piece before I could drop the call. "Rea''s father, Ronaldi Bianchi..." "..." "Is still alive." I shifted on my chair and stood up. Walking up the window and asked, "Come again?" "Ronaldi Bianchi is still alive and well in Asia." I chuckled, "I am not surprised." The person froze. "What? Cat caught your tongue?" I asked, "Or are you Ronaldi Bianchi himself?" With that, the call was dropped and when I called the number again, the number was no longer in line. "So I was right." I checked my call logs and found the recording of the call and sent it to my uncle and brother. I then walked out and was met with complete silence in the Villa. I searched for Jackie, who was seated on a counter reading a newspaper. "Jackie," I called out, walking to her, "Where is Rea and Arya?" "In the bedroom," she replied with a smile. Her grins were a sign that Rea was well. Thanking her, I went upstairs to the bedroom. This peaceful silence felt surreal. I opened the door slowly to see Rea asleep with Arya in her arms, her vulnerable side showing in her sleep. I leaned against the door, enjoying the view. Jackie came with a cup of coffee, and we drank together. She always was the mother I never had, since my mom died in the crossfire of dad''s empire dealings, she was one person I allowed to have close in my life, and as much as I never admitted it, it was nice to step into another chapter of my life with her. Closing the door slowly to avoid making a noise, I turned to Jackie. "I need help," I said. "At your service," Jackie replied, "What do you need?" "If I told you that Ronaldi Bianchi''s father is alive, would you believe me?" Before Jackie could respond, Rea, who happened to have woken up from sleep was by the door, listening in on our conversation. "What?" she asked, "My father is... alive?" Rea Waking up to hearing that my father was alive felt surreal. I was in denial of the fact that he could even be alive. He died in the fire... my father would never be the type to... "Is it true?" I asked, looking at Antonio. "I can''t be sure, but if the caller is right, he might be alive and well in Japan," he replied. I closed the door so as not to disturb Arya, who was still soundly asleep. "But the fire at the Villa," I said, "It burnt down. But if he is still alive, that means one thing." He nodded. "That he faked his death." I brushed my hair backward as I allowed the information to process through. "So what is the plan?" I asked, "Are we going to go to Japan to see him or-" "Would you be able to handle it if we did go?" Antonio asked, his sight never leaving mine as he spoke. With eagerness and firm determination, I agreed. I had a lot of things to tell my dad and grandma. A lot. If I was going to move forward as a strong person, I needed to deal with my trauma. "I am ready for it," I replied, "I have a few words to exchange with them." "Them?" Jackie asked. "My grandma - his mom," I replied, "I need to exchange some words with her too." I turned to Antonio, "Please promise me one thing." "It depends," he said, "Do I have to leave you behind?" "No," I replied, "As soon as I see them, can I be the first one to speak?" "Sure," he replied without second doubting himself, "Just don''t push yourself, okay?" I smirked, "The Antonio De Luca being a simp? Some aura you have sir," I teased, making Jackie laugh. "I will let you two be," she said, walking away. "Says Rea De Luca, who pretends to be a weakling than she originally is," Antonio shot back. "Don''t be confident of yourself Antonio," I said, walking back into the bedroom in defeat. *** I was on the balcony, enjoying the breeze when I received a message from the same number. It has been a day since the explosion happened. "346 Aomori Street, Bianchi Villa, Japan." It was an address to my father''s Villa in Japan. But the message came with a warning. "You don''t want to cross the line, Rea." Chapter 9 I stared at the message as I thought about my father. He faked his death because he couldn''t repay Antonio. He faked his death to run away from his enemies. I was not surprised, I knew this day would come soon. "Rea?" Antonio called out from behind, taking me off from my line of thoughts for a second. "Antonio," I replied, "You are still awake?" "Yes," he replied, "You have been staring at your phone for the last minute. Is everything okay?" "Yeah," I replied. But the reality is... *** "Rea?" I stared at the man who was my father. The man who faked his death and left me to deal with the damage. He was mocking Antonio, and I - I, Rea De Luca, was not going to keep silent as I always did. I am no longer the old Rea who died in silence. I was mature, strong and Antonio''s wife. "Ronaldi," I called out, getting his attention immediately alone with my grandma''s. "Is that how you speak to your father, Rea?" He asked, "I did not teach you that." "You are right. The man who died didn''t teach me that," I replied, walking to stand close to Antonio, "But the man before me just did." "Rea!" My grandma exclaimed. "As for you, grandma," I said, turning back to Ronaldi, "We will chat afterward." I stood in front of my father, right into his eyes, I stared straight into. "I don''t like the tone you spoke with to Antonio." "Antonio is a dangerous man-" "The dangerous man you gave me to - correction," I interrupted, "But also the man I married." The room fell silent. "Antonio is MY dangerous man. Got that?" I asked, "So, give him some respect." My dad froze, completely stunned. "Go on," I said, "Apologize." "You have changed," he muttered. "I think we both did dad," I replied, "It''s even. Now apologize." "I... I am sorry Antonio," he said, bowing his head down, "I guess my daughter went in full swing into the marriage." I turned to my grandma and sat on the floor, facing her upwards. "You always told me how much you hate me," I said, "So I am giving you an opportunity to show it now." She clutched her pendant hard. "It''s not brand news grandma, go on! I am giving you a chance to fulfill your wish." I pushed my hair backwards clearing my left cheek. "Go on grandma," I said, "Slap me." "I...uh..." "Touch her and you will deal with me instead." I could tell it was Antonio''s voice. I am never this brave but I was relishing the attention. "I can''t do that," she whispered. Antonio came by my side and picked me up, helping me to my feet. "You do realize that I am now have a voice right?" I asked, "You know what happens when the quiet observant child finally finds their voice..." "They speak up." "You wouldn''t," my dad said. "Try me," I said, "It''s only within a blink of an eye." "And I wouldn''t want to kill my grandma to a heart attack right?" I asked, looking at her. "What do you want?" He asked. "Pay back every cent you deceived Antonio with and the secrets are safe with me. If not..." "We will pay it back by this month," Grandma replied, her voice firm and unforgiving. "No," I replied, "Three days max." Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. "That''s too short!" He exclaimed, "Antonio?" "You heard her." A smirk formed on my lips. I remember saying I wanted nothing to do with Antonio or his dealings, but now... I am in this - there''s no turning back. The enjoyment of seeing people who deceive others for their own personal gain suffer the consequences... I love it. "So?" I asked. "In three days, right?" After some time, he replied. "Fine. In three days." *** THREE DAYS LATER "So... how does it feel to be on the other side of the table, hmm?" Ronaldi- my dad asked me as I was bound on a chair, mouth closed and in a claustrophobic room where I could only hear him. "You were too forward in speaking that time, what happened to your bravery?" I kept silent. I should have thrown away the rag closing my mouth but I didn''t. The silence was loud as I closed my eyes to steady my breathing. "ANSWER ME!" he exclaimed, causing me to jump. All the memories came back at once. The shouting, the cursing, the threats... the ''I wish you died with your mother'' always haunted me. I freed my mouth, and took a deep breath before I could speak. The old me wouldn''t have been this brave, but now, I was ready for anything - as far as to even die if that''s what the situation comes down to. "Dad?" I called out, "Why don''t you just kill me?" Silence. "Why would I?" he asked, "Why would you even think about-" "Dad, let''s stop pretending. Grandma has always wanted me dead. Why not give her the satisfaction? Besides, we were never the same after Mom''s death." "REA!" "I AM BEING HONEST HERE!" I bit my lip, trying hard to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill. "Why?" I asked again, "Why don''t you just do it?" Just then, I heard some commotion happening, and before he could leave, he switched on the water tanker to reroute the water into the room I was in. "You asked why I haven''t killed you yet," he said, "This is my way of doing so." I stared at the water rising at an increasing speed, "Thank you." "Those might be your last words if... Antonio doesn''t come on time." "Don''t worry, continue with what you are doing." "DO NOT MESS-" A violent explosion happened near the basement, vibrating the room slightly. I looked around and looked at my legs. I tried to untie my legs, breaking one leg free at a time. After some time, when the water was about at leg''s length, I finally broke free. I walked to the door and tried breaking my arms free by knocking the door down, hopefully, but with no luck. I made one big knock, and the chair broke up into components. "Weak chair," I muttered. I brought my tied hands to the door handle, where I battled to get one hand free. The water had risen to my waist length. "YES!" I exclaimed as I let go of the rope. Antonio''s POV "Rea!" "Rea!" I caught sight of Ronaldi. "She''s in the basement," he answered, without holding back. I was about to head there when he spoke once more, "That''s if she will survive the fire." "What fire?" I asked, "And what kind of a man are you? What kind of father would do that to his daughter?" "I am no father." I flashed a wicked grin that made my blood boil. "I am Ravez - her father''s deserted twin brother who is going to satisfy his revenge through her." "She''s-" I wanted to get to him but Rea was more important. I tasked some of the men to not let him escape as I went into the basement. I ran down the stairs and found a door. "Rea?" No response. I broke the door down and was met with a body of water instead. Rea was standing, without a single movement. I walked to her and the water started to go down. I picked Rea in bridal style and took her out. She opened her eyes to see me and immediately hugged me. "Antonio," she said, a smile forming on her lips, "You came." "Of course I did," I replied, "I wouldn''t leave my wife for too long." We rushed out, and saw smoke filling the house, blinding our paths. I used the shortcut I found on the way to find it close. Rea asked to be put down and she helped to open the door, which was purposely blocked from the other side. "He wants to kill us," Rea muttered. "Do you know him?" I asked. "He''s my dad who ''came back from the dead'' to the land of the living, no?" she asked, "Though my dad wouldn''t act this extreme, but... people change. Besides, my dad and I were no longer close after my mom died-" "He''s not your dad." Rea froze. "He''s not?" I shook my head, "He''s your dad''s-" Another explosive blew off. I took Rea''s hand and navigated back to the main entrance. "Run." "What?" she asked, "Why?" My eyes went to the bomb that was counting down. Rea followed my gaze. "There are only 10 seconds!" she exclaimed, tugging my shirt, "We need to get out-" "You do," I said, "I will find a way out." Though conflicted, she followed through, "Promise me?" I nodded, a faint smile on my lips, "I promise." She turned to the other side and ran while I headed in the opposite direction. Rea''s POV I wiped the tears off my eyes as I headed out the door. Running down the the stairs, I finally saw the house set ablaze, causing us to stumble slightly. I got on my knees, my thoughts spiraling out of control. The man who caused havoc was not my dad and Antonio was... "Antonio!" I got to my feet and ran to the back side of the alight mansion. Some of his men ran after me to stop me, but I increased my speed. He promised to come out alive. He promised. As soon as I got to the back, I saw the fire intensifying. I walked towards the burning entrance of the mansion but one of the men, stopped me. "It''s too dangerous Mrs-" I moved away from him. I looked around for a tiny sign of life... None. I stared back at the mansion. I then heard someone call my name, and I turned to see Alejandro. He looked at me then at the fire. "Where''s Antonio?" I was about to speak when someone hugged me from behind. "Sorry for worrying-" But I turned around and upon looking at Antonio, I pulled him for a hug. "I... You are... awful to work with," I said. He looked at me, wiping a tear off my cheek, "I am sorry." Just at that moment, I felt someone hug my leg. I looked down to see Arya, who refused to let go. "It''s okay, I am here," I said, pulling her for a hug, "Sorry that we scared you." "It''s... okay." Antonio, Alejandro and I exchanged looks. "Arya?" Antonio called her, "Can you please repeat that?" She took a moment before she repeated, "It''s okay." She looked up at us three, "Don''t... scare me.. like that again." "I promise," I immediately answered, "And you spoke." With a huge smile on my face, I cupped her face, "I''m proud of you." Antonio joined and she went to him, Antonio hugging her tighter. My cellphone rang, and I quickly picked it up to receive a normal message - spam. I looked at my phone then at Antonio. "Some things need to be thrown away to move forward, right?" I asked. He nodded, "As you wish." I walked back to the fire and threw the cellphone in, causing another fire wave. I took in a deep breath before exhaling. Life isn''t about focusing on the people you don''t have. It''s about appreciating the people you love and who have always been with you. True, there''s much to Antonio yet to discover, but I know that I love him and I will always be forever under his care. THE END
