《Darkwalker》 The Proposition Walking alone through their clans'' ancestral garden, Creon welcomed the occasional fresh breeze which brought a dearly missed feeling of peacefulness. Trying to distance himself from his daily troubles of being Patriarch, he took a deep breath and watched the soft lights from the megacity beyond their clan walls and listened. Beyond the walls of their clan, beautiful skyscrapers loomed ubiquitously. As the capital city of Vadora, it obviously had to stand out somehow, and it did so magnificently. A testament to the country''s great progress and innovation power, designed down to the last detail. Because their clan had been one the founding members of the country, they''d aeons ago been gifted valuable land from the royal family. Land which they had kept ever since then, growing in value as free space became less available. Their clan property was now one of the most lucrative real estates privately owned due to its central location in the capital, not to mention the significant amount of land attached to it. Not it''d helped them much besides collateral for loans. He¡¯d never been an idealist, his experiences since childhood simply hadn''t allowed such illusions to fester, yet being confronted with the struggles needed for their clan to succeed had proved even beyond his imagination. In order to navigate them through these difficult times, he¡¯d to develop a more cunning and ruthless practice. Not that it¡¯d resolved their financial problems. Bad management of resources and money in multiple generations prior to his appointment as Patriarch had deeply cemented their situation. Walking in silence along the created pathways in the garden while pondering, Creon was suddenly disturbed by a calm deep voice of a man originating from behind him. ¡°You seem slightly troubled. I hope you don¡¯t me intruding, you see... I come with a proposition for you which I believe could be of great mutual benefit to the both of us.¡± Taken completely unaware he was initially quite shocked. He instinctively positioned his tail enabling him to evade incoming attacks, should it be necessary. Having reached the 3rd sphere no one should have been able to approach him without his knowledge. At the very least people from his clan shouldn¡¯t, so he was quite sure it could only be an intruder and judging by where the previous voice came from, he was standing right behind Creon. Cautious of the whole situation, he hesitantly asked. ¡°Can I turn around or would that present a problem¡±, patiently waiting for a response. This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. ¡°It¡¯s fine, you can turn around¡¡± The intruder said with a slight accent. Creon slowly turned around to prevent causing any misunderstandings. As he¡¯d guessed, the intruder had been right behind him although much closer than expected, as 10 feet from his position he saw a stranger wearing a hooded black cloak and a tribal mask, hiding everything except his massive built. The intruder was virtually like a small moving mountain approaching a height of at least 7,8 feet. He''d never thought of himself as short, but standing opposite this giant certainly put things in perspective. Of course, he knew appearance differed according to which region a person originated from, he¡¯d just never met anyone this enormous. Despite the unusual situation and considerable stature of the intruder, he felt less exposed having formed a visual contact. Moreover, the fact that he wasn¡¯t dead yet and the mention of a proposition certainly helped. ¡°Well, sir¡? I hope you''ve done your research properly because it would take something pretty major to resolve the kinds of problems I''m facing at the moment. However, in case you do have a solution in mind at the very least, I should hear you out,¡± Creon shrugged. ¡°Indeed I have, so no need to be so dejected. You can call me Mykl if necessary. So, for the past year, I''ve been tasked with researching potential sites which could be used as part of an expansion plan. Due to the increasing demand for our products our current facilities simply aren''t sufficient anymore," he shook his head. "Huh? So what exactly do you produce?" Creon asked, very much interested in hearing his answer. "We are in the business of producing opportunities and security. For those with enough wealth or collateral, our organization has specialized in selecting talented infants and eventually train them to become elite sentinels willing and able to complete any orders given. Warriors, assassins, infiltrators, bodyguards, it doesn''t matter, we will train them for whatever the clients need," Mykl explained. "So, in order for us to meet future customer demand, leaders of ours has decided to develop a new training facility, which brings us back to you and your clan," he nodded towards Creon. "With your cooperation, we would like to construct one part of this training facility beneath the earth we stand," he said while pointing towards the ground, "and be part of its basic operation to ensure prevention of any problems.¡± Mykl¡¯s directness and tone of voice during his explanation suggested a certain sense of familiarity and normalcy in relation to the subject. The revulsion that you might expect simply wasn¡¯t there and his initial explaining was followed by an almost artistic pause all while watching Creon¡¯s stunned expression. ¡°As you might understand it¡¯s essential to such a place to remain unknown to the outside world, but as your clan is just about forgotten caused by your rapid decline and this country generally being ignored due to being remote and inaccessible, it¡¯s practically an ideal location for constructing an urban training facility. Consequently, we would like for your clan¡¯s cooperation. We would, of course, compensate you for your troubles.¡± Finishing his proposition, he gestured for Creon to voice his opinion on the matter at hand. Negotiations Creon wasn¡¯t shocked by the fact such facilities truly existed, but being directly confronted with such a proposition still felt surreal. Taking a few calm breaths, he directed his gaze toward the masked intruder and tried to speak like a man accustomed to authority. ¡°Considering your directness I¡¯ll get straight to it then. You mentioned the fact that your organization basically trains child mercenaries and to expand your operation you require our help?¡± He questioned Mykl. ¡°That would be correct, though you aren''t our only option,¡± he acknowledged. ¡°Okay, so this I can understand, but what I don¡¯t get is why you would need to place one of your facilities within a city? Wouldn¡¯t that just increase the risk of exposure?¡± Creon asked. ¡°It¡¯s true that placing a facility within the walls of your city will increase the risk, but we have certain measures to counteract some of those. As to the question of why¡ The main reason is that it would provide us easier access to certain things needed for training purposes,¡± Mykl patiently explained. Creon wasn¡¯t outright dismissive of the proposal. He could only imagine how the children scouted to be part of the facility would be kidnapped from different kingdoms and later put through hellish training to essentially become elite killers. Furthermore, it wouldn¡¯t surprise him if several of the children died in the process of training and selecting those most talented. The weak either perish, submits to those stronger or tries to become stronger. Country of birth, time period, parents and various other factors make people¡¯s lives unequal from the very beginning. These children were obviously going to be dealt a most unfortunate start in life. He was neither pleased nor saddened about this fact, he merely accepted it as a part of the world he lived in. Though arcane technology had reached a new point ensuring a high quality of life for most, wars were still being fought be it in the open or in the shadows. So, if by agreeing to Mykl''s proposal he could not only ensure their clan''s survival but actually make it flourish again, then he would most definitely do it. Even if he were to deny the proposal, it would most likely still be realized. The only difference being, it wouldn¡¯t be his clan reaping the benefits of a potentially lucrative deal. In case it went well at least. ¡°Okay, so I can only assume that the infants and children part of these facilities won¡¯t be obtained through completely legal means, so I won¡¯t question you on this. What I would like to know are the requirements and duties of partaking in this proposition for me and my clan. Not to mention, exactly how you expect to compensate our clan for the potential risk we would be taking being involved and for how long a period this collaboration is supposed to last?¡± Creon asked in a straightforward manner. ¡°Considering the matter at hand and the need for secrecy of both our parties, we would require for all personnel associated with the training facility to be placed under a containment seal to ensure no information about us or the facility leaks to any outside sources," Mykl nodded towards the city beyond their clan walls. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. "Besides this, one of the first duties would obviously be to help us construct the required facility. Our organization would, of course, be the ones paying for all associated expenses connected to the construction. After the facility is ready for use, our people would be in charge of all aspects concerning training and education. Your clan would have to provide any additional personnel needed to make sure the basic operational runs smoothly.¡± Taking a small breath, Mykl appeared to think about what to say next. ¡°And¡ You shouldn¡¯t be overly concerned about compensation. Knowing your clans¡¯ great financial difficulties, we would, of course, provide sufficient financial aid ensuring the opportunity to regain your past strength. As a necessary precaution, however, your clan should continue to act in a restrained manner and not display any too significant exterior changes during the period of our partnership in order to avoid any suspicion.¡± ¡°What about the timeframe?¡± Creon interrupted. ¡°At the present moment, our clan doesn¡¯t have a definitive time frame in mind. It entirely depends on a number of different factors, most of which are beyond our control. An estimate would be 200 years, at least" Mykl said, once again pausing to let Creon think the proposal through. Creon wasn¡¯t exactly thrilled to personally be placed under a containment seal, although he could see the merit in no one being able to speak. It definitely would lessen the largest risk factor involved. Besides this, one of the obvious downsides would be having absolutely no control of the situation. Sure, he would most likely continue administering their clan and perhaps parts of the facility, but when it really came down to it definitely wouldn¡¯t be him. By agreeing to this deal and letting them inside his clan, they would essentially be the ones in control. Even if he wanted to renounce his commitment, he had no confidence in them honoring his decision. It was a so-called ¡®one road ticket¡¯ with their Tahrus clan merely along for the ride. Possessing no means of slowing it down. If they were fortunate it would be a ride back to having their previous status restored, and if unfortunate a ride straight to their downfall. It would be sort of like gambling, just hoping for the best outcome to occur after the final choice was made. He was either going to rely on the help of this unknown organization for them to reach their destination or keep struggling the same way as before, hoping for a miracle like all the other clans that had been in the same dilemma as his. He once again directed his attention back at Mykl still standing in the same location. ¡°Do you require an immediate answer, or do I have time to consult with the elders of my clan?¡± He spoke questionably. ¡°I prefer an immediate answer of course,¡± came the short reply from Mykl. ¡°Hmm... Considering the potential benefits of agreeing, assuming you are able to deliver as promised according to your earlier proposition," he let it hang in the air for a bit, "then I would agree and make my clan available to meet your demand for the extended future.¡± Creon agreed to the proposal. Mykl nodded his masked head as a sign of satisfaction, ¡°I¡¯m pleased to hear your answer. In a show of good faith, here¡¯s a cube-drive that will give you access to an account containing enough credits to provide financial security for the extended future¡± Mykl replied, throwing him the small drive about the size of a child¡¯s fist. ¡°Much appreciated. So, how do we proceed from here?¡± Creon asked while appreciating Mykl¡¯s immediate generosity, assuring him in his decision. He answered while turning around and disappearing into the shadows, ¡°for now, you should go inform the elders of your clan about what has transpired and a week from now we¡¯ll meet up again to discuss the final details. We¡¯ll send you the details of the time and place.¡± Hidden in the Mist Creon along with two elders of his clan was running at high speed through one of the most secluded regions of the Vadora Kingdom. Even though it was known for its mountainous forest regions and inaccessible nature, this particular region was still something else entirely. A mountainous terrain covered in dense green forests this part of the Vadora kingdom was filled with seemingly endless numbers of stone pillars covered in green foliage varying in heights and mass, some even reaching 1000 feet creating a spectacular sight as the peaks soared majestically, resembling mythical sculptures deteriorated over time. Between peaks, numerous ravines and valleys lay shrouded in drifting mist that protected small wonders of nature like waterfalls, streams, and lakes from prying eyes. Without being hindered in the slightest, they agilely maneuvered between obstacles with silver colored tails covered in fur acting as counterweights for better balance. Their tails and hair had the same color but it was offset by their light blue skin and clear blue eyes that pierced through the night. When Mykl initially said he¡¯d send details of the time and place for the meeting, Creon thought it would¡¯ve been at a hotel or restaurant in the capital city. He hadn¡¯t imagined that it would be coordinates of what seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. In order to even reach the meeting place in time, Creon and the two elders he¡¯d chosen to accompany him were quite literally forced to depart as soon the message came. Despite, all three being trained sentinels, with Creon having reached the 3rd sphere and the elders having reached the 2nd sphere, running continuously through this arduous terrain for the better part of a day had still taken quite a toll on them. Especially for the two elders, they didn''t practice as much anymore knowing progress were unlikely. Breaking the silence, one of the elders spoke in a hoarse voice. ¡°Are you sure this is the right decision, Creon? If it ever were to be revealed, we wouldn¡¯t even have time to regret before we would all be dead! How are we supposed to trust them not knowing who these people are?¡± Without showing signs of stopping they continued moving forward at great speed. Slightly out of breath Creon responded, ¡°Dawson, your worries have been noted, but now isn¡¯t the time to hesitate and question my decision as Patriarch. We are all aware of the present state of our Taurus clan. Despite my best efforts in establishing our previous influence and might, we have now reached past the point where it¡¯s impossible without drastic measures. Agreeing to this deal would provide us with both sufficient funds and resources to once again be prosperous.¡± Observing Creon¡¯s annoyance of being doubted at the present moment, Dawson decided against continuing to debate the issue any further and stayed silent. Creon also chose not to pursue the issue of being questioned once again, despite already making it clear the decision had been made, by him. He knew Dawson only had the clan''s best interests at heart and recognized his concerns. However, this wasn''t a democratic decision where everybody had a vote. No, he was the one in charge! He was the one bearing the heavy burden of carrying their clan and feeling stressed out due to his inability to solve their financial difficulties threatening to bankrupt them.Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. Later the night Creon had encountered Mykl he''d summoned all elders to explain the impending changes. Most had a healthy amount of skepticism. It did ease, however, as Creon went on to explain the potential benefits of accepting and the almost evitable consequence of bankruptcy had he denied it. They knew, as well as he, that the clan wouldn¡¯t be able to persevere in its current state for much longer. Yet, with the financial backing of this seemingly powerful organization, not only would they be able to repay all their debts. If all went well, reaching the Tahrus clans former status would no longer be just a dream. ¡°How much further?¡± Asked Tobias with a tired voice, one of his most trusted elders despite getting old. While still running, Creon took out a smartphone with a semi-transparent display and smooth black edges, which he''d used to navigate through the confusing terrain, ¡°According to the coordinates provided by Mykl, then it should be in the valley just up ahead¡¡± Creon said, trying to sound more confident than he actually felt. It had been ages since he¡¯d needed to navigate through regions such as these, so he was definitely out of practice, he could only trust the navigation provided by the smartphone. They continued onwards and in a matter of minutes, as Creon had predicted, they came to the outskirts of a deep valley shrouded in dense mist. Wanting to get a better view, all three of them quickly ran vertically up the side of a nearby deteriorated stone pillar with a height nearing 500 feet using their genetic energy. As they reached the top, Creon and the two elders were met with a spectacular sight. From their vantage point, they discovered what they previously thought to be a naturally formed valley might actually be a massive crater. With tall peaks and mist covering everything except the occasional canopy of an immense tree, it looked otherworldly. Everythings was quiet until the moment Creon quietly leaped from the pillar and into a giant tree in the crater. Without showing signs of stopping the elders immediately followed suit moving forward at great speeds. For Creon, it felt like he¡¯d stepped into another world. All the stone pillars had been exchanged with immense trees twisted between each other with interconnected branches creating multiple narrow pathways above the ground and using these they moved onwards to the intended meeting spot at the crater''s center. Quickly approaching the center, they came to a clearing where ancients looking buildings came into view. ¡°They¡¯ve actually manage to find an ancient city at a place like this!¡± Tobias sputtered, shocked by this find. ¡°This has to be the correct place, right?¡± asked elder Tobias. ¡°Well, if it isn¡¯t, then it would be a huge coincidence that¡¯s for sure¡±, Creon responded as he cautiously jumped down and approached one part of the wall which had broken apart allowing them access into this city long forgotten by history. Hidden by the passage of time and nature, the city remained a true relic depicting how far their civilization had come in terms of both technology and knowledge, despite constant warfare and political intrigues between clans. "These building must date back to before arcane energy was discovered, and genetic energy was used but not understood..." Tobias marveled as he observed the architecture walking through its streets. With annoyance audible in his voice, Dawson asked. ¡°How are we even supposed to find them inside the city? Look at all these buildings and temples! Couldn¡¯t they have been more specific?¡± ¡°They could, but I don¡¯t think it¡¯s going to present a problem. Take a look over there¡¡± Creon said and pointed towards one of the steps leading upwards to a temple looking structure. Casually sitting on the steps was a mask and cape wearing individual that both Tobias and Dawson hadn¡¯t noticed until Creon pointed it out. Making a Killing Standing up, the masked figure commanded in a distinctively female voice, ¡°follow me I¡¯ll lead you to Mykl.¡± No pleasantries of introduction, just a clear instruction for them to follow her. Unable to argue they all did as told and followed a couple of feet behind her as she led them up the pyramid-shaped temple she¡¯d been sitting on when first discovered. Below the hem of her cloak peaked a rather charming slim black furred tail which swayed gently as she walked up the structure. It had a stairstep design which relied on intricately carved stones to reach an estimate of at least 300 feet, its peak crowned with a sculpture of an evil looking deity gazing down upon them. Reaching the top, she stopped and turned around to face them. ¡°You won¡¯t be able to pass through this next part with illusion barriers without help, at least until you have learned the correct rhythm and amount of emitted genetic energy required to pass them, not that you will be visiting much. However, for now, you will have to be in physical touch with me in order to get through them.¡± Taking two steps forward Creon and the two elders each placed a hand on her narrow shoulders. Through their palms, they could feel slight pulses of genetic energy emitted from her body. As they walked through the entrance, each of them felt themselves being enveloped by a foreign energy while holding onto her at a slightly upward angle. She quickly led them beyond a large hall meant for meditation or prayers to the deity sitting at the top, and past multiple deserted chambers where the constricted airflow caused an uncomfortable moldy scent to permeate the air. They continued on until they reached the end of a small corridor without any options to continue. "Don¡¯t let go,¡± was all she said in preparation as they felt the rhythm of genetic energy change to become more erratic and walked them straight through a nearby wall, almost like it didn¡¯t exist in the first place. A split second of darkness later revealed a lighted downward spiraling staircase. ¡°Okay, you can let go now,¡± she stated coldly and without waiting for a response walked down the steps. Letting go of her shoulders, Creon and the two elders followed behind impressed with the protective measures taken to conceal this facility, not to mention the chosen location. Even if someone were to stumble upon its location, the time and skill required to decipher all their installed barriers should provide them with enough time to escape to safety. Arriving at the bottom of the staircase they came to a grand lobby equipped in a modern style equipped, proving the considerable amount of money invested in this project. ¡°This facility has been built by expanding and renovating this city''s already existing network of underground tunnels and buildings.¡± Said made a slight gesture to the polished walls without turning around, still leading from the front.Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author. ¡°Today we used the main entrance if you will. However, there are several others throughout the city and are similarly secured by different barriers. Furthermore, a sensing barrier has been placed around the entire crater constantly monitored by a team allowing us to detect intruders and intercept them if needed,¡± she explained. So that¡¯s how they knew our precise location, Creon thought to himself. ¡°The facility has been divided into several areas intended for varying purposes such as training, educational and medical. As for the all the different areas and their exact locations, someone will provide a more detailed explanation at a later date. For now, I¡¯m taking you to see Mykl and then we¡¯ll commence the placement of containment seals.¡± Having trailed behind her for the better part of ten minutes in the underground network of tunnel and buildings, she stopped in front an opaque sliding door the length of 15 feet that automatically opened letting them through revealing a large office on the other side. Despite Creon never actually seeing Mykl¡¯s true appearance the massive build of the man currently working behind a desk in the middle of the office using multiple displays definitely had the correct size. Judging by his white skin tone with a hint of blue, small pointy ears, short black hair and tail he should be from the kingdom of Zaia, known as one of the 8 most powerful empires. ¡°Ah, I see you made it. Good to see you again, Creon. I see you brought company!¡± Said the man as he stood up from his chair and went to greet them. ¡°Likewise, and I presume you¡¯re Mykl?¡± Creon responded as they shook hands. Their size difference becoming even more apparent standing next to each other. ¡°Hmm... How would you ever guess?" He chuckled in a deep voice. "No need to be so uptight Jasmine, we''re partners now you can drop the masks and all.¡± Mykl directed his attention to their female guide. "Yes, sir!" Was all she said as the hood and mask was taken off, in turn, revealing a stoic face that could have been pretty should she ever choose to smile. Her black hair was collected in a simple, sleek ponytail that complemented her face, but her pale blue eyes gave off a feeling of danger. Based on her complexion she should definitely be from Zaia, it also explained why she was so tall. "Never mind her she''s always like that no matter the company, come over here and take a look," Mykl showed them to panoramic windows behind the desk. "What? You''ve already begun?" Creon questioned in confusion as he gazed below, "We have to, the clients are lining up to buy what we sell. What''s down there is a part of the first generation we are going to train." "How many have you managed to collect?" Dawson asked, standing behind Creon. "About a 150 so far, though we still need another 50''ish to reach the planned number of 200 children in each generation. One generation needs to produce approximately 20 sentinels of the highest grade." Mykl said and pointed to one crib in the corner where an infant was receiving an exam, "That infant boy over there held by one of our facility''s medical staff members was brought in less than an hour before you arrived. Our recruitment is done in collaboration with various adoption agencies and agents we have placed within the foster care system. All infants need to pass a screening where we evaluate their potential and whether they are worth the investment." "How precise are these tests you perform?" Tobias interrupted him midflow. "Of course it''s not completely reliable as there will always be outliers, however, we''ve reached a point where the statistical error using various tests is sufficiently low for us to still make a killing doing this!" He said with a satisfied grin on his face. Investments Mykl turned around to face Jasmine who casually leaned against the wall behind them, "could you go call upon Alestra and let her know she soon will be needed in my office?" "Certainly," was all she said before exiting the same way they entered leaving the office in silence until Mykl explained. "Alestra is our in-house enchanter, which means she will be the one inscribing a containment seal on each of you and later on the rest of your clan members." "Ah, of course. I imagine it''s quite convenient to have one at hand, but we will be at your disposal whenever." Creon commented. "Excellent," he nodded "and indeed it is a fortune to have one such as her. Both Jasmine and Alestra were part of a previous generation trained for clients of ours, same for me I guess though it''s been a long time since then." "You only hire from within your own ranks?" Dawson asked. "Not necessarily, but with the clients accept we typically include an option to choose one or two graduates among each generation in return for a price discount." Gesturing for them to follow he led them to a comfortable sofa arrangement encircling a living room table. With each of them sitting down Mykl placed his right hand on the table''s dark glass-like surface and emitted a sequence of genetic energy pulses, unlocking its computing features. Tapping a folder, he opened several pictures and building plans for them to see. "Here, this is the plans for the facility to be built beneath your clan. Though it''s a downscaled version of another facility placed elsewhere, it should still be able to accommodate 500 trainees comfortably." "Damn, you''re even adding gravitation rooms! Those are freaking expensive to install," Tobias exclaimed in shock while studying the drawings. "They are expensive, yes, but it''s worth the investment. It will help bring out the potential of the trainees quicker and deliver finished products within a timeframe of 20 years." "Hmm, right..." Tobias said, pretending it was normal. Mykl spent the time until Jasmine returned with Alestra, going through the details of their responsibilities and how they''d send the appropriate personnel within a week to begin construction. Apparently, they''d only be sending trainees to receive the so-called ''urban experience'' after passing either a certain age or skill level. The main facility placed in the ancient city was responsible for nearly everything else. When they came back, Alestra who looked almost identical to Jasmine except for her boyish short hair, started inscribing a containment seal onto their throats using fine needles dipped in a mixture of ink and her blood. It was extremely painful, and they could feel the invading genetic energy being injected with each tiny stab, all to ensure their silence. None of them really knew how it worked, only that it did. "It is finished," Alestra said exhaling, "I''ve used a dynamic blueprint which connects to your emission points allowing you to change the color of the tattooed seal making it easy to hide. Should you ever reach the next sphere of cultivation it will naturally evolve and stay connected your new emission points, unlikely as that may be." "Well done Alestra," Mykl interrupted her before she insulted them further, "with that finished let me show you out, gentlemen."If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it. On the way out, Mykl pointed out parts of the facility Creon and his two elders hadn''t seen coming in, some still being constructed. "One key aspect we try hard to instill upon trainees during training and education is the fact we''re doing them a favor, they are blessed to be here. If it wasn''t for us their talent would probably never be explored. Our goal isn''t to train them to become mindless robots without identities. Unless they possess some unique skill we usually sort those out quickly, as we find people who actually like to live on the edge and being on top of the latter much better products." "So, you''re saying at some point most of the trainees become grateful?" Dawson questioned. "Indeed, it''s true! It''s not like we deprive them of much. Our program has recently begun to expand the opportunities for trainees to differentiate and grow as people. Gathered statistics have shown this provides a greater motivation, in turn, providing more balanced sentinels able to blend in everywhere without notice on our client''s behalf." "Most would make the argument never having a family, the constant danger and freedom of choice are valuable..." Tobias said. "In reality, there will always be a tradeoff of some kind and our trainees are more aware of this fact than most. People like us do not have a choice over the environment we''re in, but we still get to decide what we will make of it and what path we will take from there," Mykl responded as they reached an exit. Same procedure as last time all of them reached up to put a hand on his shoulders. This time a slightly different rhythm of genetic energy enveloped them until they stood within a down broken residence that probably belonged to someone important as it was connected the city''s tunnel network. "That''s it for this time, though we''ll be seeing each other regularly from now on since I''ve been appointed the role of director for this site." Saying their goodbyes, Mykl left them to return back to the capital by themselves. "Guess there''s no turning back from this," Dawson said pointing out the obvious. "Nope, there definitely isn''t," Creon sighed, "we''re in it now, so when we get back you two will start the necessary preparations!" ---------- The main facility, 16 years later. "Each of you has been gifted with exceptional talent, which is why we chose you. Few will people will ever have the rare chance to experience the true apex of in this world, however, this is what we are giving you. Commit yourself, be strong and we will guide you to become the best possible version of yourselves." Mykl took a breath as he walked sideways inspecting 10 lines of 20 children standing at attention. There were children from all 8 great empires, even some of the smaller kingdoms were represented. It was pretty easy to distinguish people''s origin as long as you knew the color combinations and body characteristics of each. "Since each was fortunate enough to be chosen you''ve been groomed and readied for this day. Today begins a journey that will last the next 16 years, a time during which you will be educated and trained in various fields required to excel as elite sentinels." Turning around, he gestured for a man behind him to step forward. Originating from the Morewen Empire he had the traditional tan skin that made his long white-blond hair and tail fur stand out even more. Standing side by side his head reached the height of Mykl shoulders making him above what could be expected from his kind. "As the director, I would like to introduce you to Tomas, a representative of the clan sponsoring your generation of trainees," who nodded towards the newtrainees. "He will be staying with us to observe and help us evaluate your progress until only 20 of you remain." Mykl briefly introduced him. "As previously stated, each of you should strive toward becoming the strongest possible version of yourselves. From this point onwards it''s a competition to the finish line. You will be tried and tested, so pay attention to everything we teach. Most of you will fail, there''s no way around it, but the only way of knowing is to actually try. Those who succeed will eventually enter the scene of where giants lurk, unknown to the masses." He encouraged them as he noticed something peculiar in one of the back rows. As an elite sentinel and a leader who regularly met with clients from different kingdoms and empires, he prided himself in his ability identify anyone''s origins based on their appearance, yet, a small child with bright purple eyes surprised him as he had characteristics, unlike any of the variations Mykl was familiar with. Almost Picture Perfect In addition, to his bright purple eyes which Mykl had never seen or heard of before in his rather long life, the child''s thick curly hair also had a dark purple color, only a shade or two from it being black. Unlike himself who was fairly pale, this small boy had a light brown skin, despite never having been allowed to roam outside. His ears were quite a bit longer compared to any of the other children beside him, a feature that only added to his exotic appearance. Despite his young age, it was quite easy to tell he''d become a handsome looking devil should he ever manage to become an adult. Caught in his own thoughts, Mykl didn''t notice Tomas who had been standing beside him this entire time had started to grow slightly impatient. "Mykl?" Tomas prompted him to continue the ceremony. "Umm...? Ah, yes!" Mykl said, leaving his theory crafting behind him and redirected his attention to the entire generation of new trainees once again. "Now! Listen up!" He called for them to pay close attention. "To prepare you for the coming trials each of you will facing to evaluate your individual ability and talent we''ve prepared a short video and live combat starring one of your seniors," Mykl announced in a loud voice. "Bring up the recording," he directed with a hand as he walked to the side together with Tomas. Behind where they once stood a significant part of the wall suddenly lit up and a recording started playing. ---------- Standing in one of the back rows Raphael gazed up at the wall as some recording started playing. Only a short time in Raphael had he was watching a deathmatch between a boy and girl seemingly just a couple of years older than him. Without mercy, both of them fought unarmed only aided by their martial skills, strength, and speed as weapons to strike down their opponent. It was his first time watching one of these, however, he could feel his heart beating faster in a combination of excitement and surprise at the brutal fighting that ended with the girl winning. After she disabled one of his legs it had been an easy task to gain the upper hand and twist his neck killing him. The video ended with a closeup of her battered and bloodied face edged in sadness despite the victory which confused Raphael. She just won, what reason did she have to be sad? Looking to the boy standing next to him, he whispered, "hey, what do make of this?" "Be quiet, stupid! The director is watching," he whispered back, shutting down all communication. Sneaking a peak, Raphael accidentally made eye contact with the director. Now I''ve really done it, he sighed, wondering why he''d actually been looking over here.Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. Lucky for him the director didn''t make something out of it and instead chose to move back to his previous spot with the video done, this time accompanied by the same girl from the fight though slightly older. She had lighter skin than Raphael, but her hair and tail fur was a stark white creating a distinct contrast. She reminded him of a female version of Tomas who apparently sponsored them. "This is Amarah," the director said placing a large hand on her right shoulder, "and as you might have noticed she''s the one you''ve just seen fighting in the recording. She''s currently 8 years old and part of the 4th generation we''re training. At the early age of 6, she awakened to a rare mystery bloodline ability called ''fantasy descent''. It basically enables Amarah to solidify her genetic energy and for it to take on a unique form," he said sounding proud. "It''s an extremely flexible and powerful ability in the right hands. Unfortunately, her ability isn''t inheritable making her unable to establish her own bloodline. Because of this, however, we have been able to make an agreement with her generation''s sponsor for her to be given to us. Until this point in time, she''s the most valuable trainee we''ve ever had and her future potential is undeniable." Raphael took notice of Amarah''s sad expression when the director brought up the recording, he still wondered why that was, but the director went on. "To demonstrate what each of you is expected to learn within the coming few years we''ve asked Amarah and one of her instructors to spar," he said. Orderly lines were quickly replaced by a wide circle, allowing plenty of space for Amarah and her male instructor to fight within its center. The disparity in sizes was quite significant as she was rather petite and slim, while her opponent was tall and bulky. Not that such things necessarily mattered when it came to fighting ability, or at least that''s what they''d been told up until this point. Raphael had never actually experienced a live battle between sentinels before, not that any of the other kids had. As Amarah and the instructor prepared, the air was thick with anticipation. Unlike the unarmed deathmatch this time blunt weapons were being used. Both of them picked up what they''d been told were the standard weapons amongst sentinels, a single tactical short sword and throwing knives. Through time it had become the favored combination for its versatility in combat, and each empire or kingdom usually exhibited slightly varied designs. Quality was a whole separate issue that depended on the metal used but as with most things, money talks. Something Raphael had understood by reading between the lines of the director''s impassioned speech. With tactical short swords, Amarah and the instructor began their deadly sword dances. She initiated with a quick right slash he parried, only to be forced to twist in an awkward angle to avoid her immediate reverse. Taking a few swift steps backward he brought his sword up to block another attack only to shift his feet to get a better angle of attack. Amarah smoothly sidestepped his stab and once again went aggressive with a series of blurry attacks. Shortly after beginning, their sparring accelerated into a fierce exchange of sword attacks. Every sweep of their blades was as quick as thought and reacting on instinct they danced back and forth. This continued for several minutes until Amarah somehow summoned a silver mirage-like beast claw going for the instructors exposed back. Attitude Rotating, he dropped low barely avoiding the attack and in one fluid motion went for her legs. Just as he was about to connect with her left thigh, she backflipped and midair summoned the rest of the beast. By the time she landed on her feet a 10-foot tall saber-toothed tiger appeared. Like a loyal companion, it stood by her side guarding her, waiting, ready to engage the instructor. Constructed out of pure genetic energy it had a mirage-like quality to it, only adding to its dangerous aura. Without notice Amarah and her beast attacked, both creating two silver colored blurs Raphael wasn''t able to follow. Moving too fast for his eyes to track he''d no idea how the instructor evaded her frontal assault, except that he did since the fight continued. Without notice Raphael was suddenly blasted backward by a powerful gust of wind, almost falling on his ass. Thankfully he didn''t, but in the center, Amarah and her saber-toothed beast had separated from the instructor. None of them looked worse for wear from when they started, except a bit out of breath. Somehow deciding without speaking both of them sheathed their tactical short swords. As Amarah dissolved her energy constructed beast into nothing the director started clapping. "Excellent spar! I see you''ve gotten a better hang of it Amarah," the director said. "Yes, it has gotten easier to keep the rhythm of the arcane blueprint going even while fighting, though I still can''t keep it going for long," she exhaled. "No matter. It''s good to see you improve. Even though we did spend a fortune finding an arcane blueprint designed for your specific bloodline ability," he commented loud enough for everybody to hear. "Yeah, but I still have a long way to go!" Amarah said with a smile as she went towards the door leading out. "Well, considering our future plans for you it''s definitely worth it," he hollered at her. Not even bothering to answer, she just left. The balls on that girl, shit! Raphael would never have dared to do that, not yet at least. He''d seen other kids from his group get their asses whooped for much less, and she was doing it to the facility director no less. But he guessed she''d already proven her worth several times over leaving her much more leeway compared to any of them. They were still very much untested, and their teachers had yet to teach how to do what Amarah did. "Okay then, let''s move on to the last part," he tried to speak, but two boys engaging in a heated debate interrupted him.If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. "Oi, listen up you two! I''m not going to repeat myself," annoyance evident in expression. The troublemakers found that the leniency given to Amarah didn''t extend to them and they immediately became quiet. With silence reestablished, he once again tried to explain the last part. "Each of you will now be given an instructor who will teach you the fundamentals of what it means to be sentinels! Though supported by other staff members, this person will be in full charge of coordinating your entire education and training. Structuring your schedules to maximise time spent, as our time is short and we have much to teach," the facility director explained. "Besides this we''ll also be making entire new groups, each of them consisting of only 10 trainees, instead of the previous 20. To move on you would either need to pass a certain test at age 10 or a certain criterion for potential like Amarah did," he told them. With that said, the instructors went on a naming spree, calling the names of each child supposed to be on their team. Chaotic as it was with all instructors doing it simultaneously, everybody was still able to hear when they got called upon. As they went by alphabet, it took a while until anyone called Raphael''s name. Enough time him to get a little irritable. He wasn''t much for waiting around doing, well nothing. "Raphael!" A female voice called out just as he was beginning to zone out. "Here," he responded and strolled towards the woman. "Okay, now that we''re all together, please follow me..." She said, not even introducing herself. Following her, she led them to a classroom with seats for 10 people and free space to the right allowing the possibility of live demonstrations, should it be needed during lectures. Raphael chose one of the back seats, his preferred spot during lectures such as these since they started receiving them at age 3. From his position, he had an almost complete view of the new group he''d been put in, including their instructor standing at the very front. Looking around, he noticed that not one of them appeared with the same physical traits as him. Not that he expected them to. During a previous lecture on demographics and racial classification, he''d found that none of the available documents for him to read about the current empires and kingdoms described them having physical traits like his. It didn''t matter too much, but if possible he would still like to know. "Now that you''ve all found a seat, I''ll do a brief self-introduction and afterward give you an overview of your coming years," their instructor begun. Raphael''s tail flicked in annoyance, understanding he''d have to go through yet another speech. "Am I bothering you, hmm... Raphael?" She asked while looking at the tablet she''d been holding. "Sorry, won''t happen again," he murmured with his ears lowered. "It better not, but by reading up on your file I''m guessing that it will. Control your tail, or you will get in trouble with me, young man!" She said. Angry with his own tail for betraying him in such a way revealing confidential information to her, the ''enemy'', without his damn approval and getting him in trouble. He wanted to strangle it! Not that it would remedy his current bad standing with their instructor, but it would make him feel better. He did decide against it, however, as it would make him look crazy and stand out even more than usual. Instead, he chose to just stay attentive and keep his tail low, thus making it less likely for him to mess up any further. Sentinels "Anyway, I''m Camille and if you are among those who pay attention," she said looking straight at Raphael, "then you should also know I''ll be your instructor the next 6 years." Raphael knew the comment was directed at him and he felt it wasn''t fair. His only true offense was not liking speeches, but nobody did. It was like they kept presenting him with the promise of a delicious dessert he wasn''t allowed to eat it until a full week later. Damn, now he was hungry as well. The frustration was getting to him. To Raphael it was very simple, stop talking and start teaching. Not that he was expecting Camille to care, she didn''t seem like the type. Not paying attention to Raphael''s brooding, Camille went on without stopping. "So far I''ve managed to reach the 5th sphere. It might not mean anything to you now, but it will after this day is over," she promised them. Raphael nodded, pretending it meant something to him. "Before we begin, let''s get a few things straight! My role isn''t that of a babysitter, but an instructor! As such, I will teach you the art of sentinels. If you''re having trouble I''ll help point you in the right direction, however, whether or not you succeed will depend on your effort and luck." Raphael was only half listening at this point, but he did catch what she said concerning luck. If she was right, he would most likely be forced to double his effort for his bad luck. "I''ll do my best to make your talents bloom and polish your instincts, but I can''t walk the path for you. That''s a burden one must always carry alone," Camille finished her speech and begun their first ''true'' lecture. Raphael had been on the receiving end of rudimentary lectures on content read in books, but nothing concrete about what sentinels were and how they did those things from the previous spar. "Do anyone of you know what a sentinel is?" Camille asked the entire class. "No one knows?" Not quite believing nobody knew. "Miss, I don''t think anyone of us has been privy to that information yet," a girl the front row answered. "Okay... you little man," she pointed at a boy, "take a guess from what you''ve seen today." "I don''t know, someone who fights other people?" He guessed not knowing whether it was the right or wrong. "That''s a child''s answer, and none of you is children! Children have families; fathers, mothers, siblings. Do you have any of that?" She questioned the same boy.The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation. "No," he responded in a low voice. "Right you are! And if you''re not a child then what are you?" Camille asked once more. "I don''t know," almost crying now. "You''re nothing, that''s what you are... and until you manage to become a sentinel that''s how you''ll remain." She stated. Raphael looked around and found quite a few crying in silence. Some even reaching for their tails, seeking comfort by holding on to it. Others seemed too shocked to mentally process anything of what just occurred and did nothing. Raphael was probably somewhere in the middle. He didn''t feel like crying, but he could still feel a painful stabbing sensation in his chest, it hurt. "To answer the original question myself," Camille continued, "In today''s society, the title ''practitioner'' is a general term given to anyone who''s able to absorb arcane energy and manipulate their own genetic energy. Sentinels are commonly referred to as practitioners who specialize in combat aspects, but that''s only part of what we are," she said disappearing from her spot in of everyone. No blur, just gone. She instantly reappeared in front of the same boy she''d ridden hard only minutes earlier. With a small smile, she bent over his table getting right in his face. "Don''t hold your tail like it''s some damn pet. You might as well suck your thumb," Camille instructed him. At the same time Raphael felt sorry for the other guy, he was also most pleased Camille had replaced him with another target. "Don''t smile Raphael... I haven''t forgotten you," she said straightening her back, gazing directly at him. "It never even crossed my mind," he lied. "Sure you did," not believing him for a second, "good try though!" she commended him for his effort. It felt weird, being praised for attempting to lie. "How did you know?" Raphael questioned her as she went back in front of everyone. "Your tail is quite the little storyteller," was all she said. Twisting around, he gave his swaying tail a mean stare. It betrayed him once again! This couldn''t keep happening. Next time, he would make sure to control it. Answering Raphael she went on explaining, "sentinels are feared and respected because they can do what most can''t. Unlike the non-combat categories of practitioners, sentinels take the potential of our species to its very limits by integrating the use of pure genetic energy and arcane blueprints thereby increasing their combat prowess exponentially." Raphael did his best to memorize everything she said. "For example, me moving from here... to here," once again moving faster than they could see, "is accomplished using genetic energy in its pure form and what you saw Amarah perform during the spar was a combination of both," she explained. "Until now, your physical bodies and genetic points haven''t been able to handle the strain required for such moves, both too fragile. Usually, this would remain true till you reached the age of 8, however, by us creating a living environment with increased amounts of arcane energy in the atmosphere, this period has been shortened. What I''m talking about is this," Camille tapped her tablet and a holographic body of a woman appeared next to her. She directed their attention to several points marked throughout the chest, stomach, legs, tail, back, and head. "These are commonly referred to as ''genetic points'' and to the furthest extent of our knowledge a prerequisite for life. Their most basic function is to absorb arcane energy, thereby allowing our bodies to convert it into genetic energy. For most, it''s a complete involuntary action, like the beating of our hearts," holding a hand over her heart. "The path of cultivation was created by taking advantage of this mechanism and learning to control it... It''s the very foundation of all practitioners powers, including sentinels. The ability to manipulate emission points is a basic requirement all of you must pass in order to learn the required skills for sentinels," she said.
