《Fiction》 Prologue: A Girls Love Among carefully and painstakingly gardened flowers laid a dog, whose white tail curled comfortably. The cool breeze gently ruffled his short fur and he fell into a deeper slumber. He romanticized of the dreamy and beautiful Miss Dog, a wealthy half-decade old poodle who lived five houses down. The moment his eyes held her beautiful form with tail held high and nose to sky, he dropped all paws and crowned her queen. His owner had received a fond tug-o-war memory in grave attempts to remove him from her sight. In return, he was rewarded a tighter, thicker leash and half-a-dinner. That fated night, he plopped himself down for hours in front of the mirror, experimenting his best angle. When his owner¡¯s older brother learned of this love episode, he laughed in his wicked way, and ungraciously said, ¡°You are just a pug.¡± However, the dog gave in not. The next morning, he prowled proudly house-to-house for his queen. For his effort, he was bestowed Miss Dog¡¯s unpleased look and several shrill barks. Thinking she must¡¯ve been angry from the lack of a house-warming gift, the next visit was prepared with his favorite toy, the Frisbee. When he hurled the Frisbee as an invite, he had to fish it back alone and returned home, droopy ears against dusky skyline. His sympathetic owner bought him delicious dog treats to court his fellow mate, and he continued to visit her but was turned away every time. Now he only visits her in dreams, because it was sweeter than reality. In the present, the dog¡¯s ears suddenly perked up with the opening of the front door and swift escaping steps of his owner¡¯s object of fascination, a handsome man of 20. A young and tall girl, dressed in training slacks, soon followed suit with a tray of baked goods, ¡°Wait! What about the cookies?¡± There was only the answer of hurried footsteps. The dog eagerly rushed up to his owner and bounced around in an attempt ease her sorrow. They actually share the same love story. A few houses down. Frequently offered chocolate chip cookies. Rejected. The girl turned her attention to her little companion, ¡°I did what I could. I even baked cookies!¡± He barked in agreement, as a witness of her efforts during all the slow long nights. His eyes followed her sullen retreating figure to the house. As evening came along, the older brother tuned in on his sister¡¯s recount of her ¡°unreasonable¡± rejection to their worried mother. He did not think her ugly, but she cannot be considered a Korean beauty. For a girl, she was tall at 170 cm, towering over most guys at the sensitive age of 17. Korean female celebrities appear slim and tall on television, but most are only around 165cm. ¡°Oppa!¡± Not to mention, her voice ran deep, all tenderness lost. The brother shifted his eyes to her small sharp face, no longer childlike but the eyes innocent. They both shared hazel eyes owed to their European father. One difference was that he has light brown hair while hers black from their mother. ¡°Oppa! Why are you looking at me like that?¡± the sister asked. You should keep your hair long, the brother answered. ¡°You know I keep it like this because of Tae Kwon Do.¡± I feel like I have a younger brother, try to call me ¡®Hyung¡¯! he said. ¡°Cheon Tae Guk! Stop it!¡± She was quick to raise her fists. Alright, Mi Ha. It¡¯s almost your birthday so I¡¯ll be nice, he smiled suspiciously. **************************************************************************** A bit of time has passed since her rejection however she has not given up on boy-next-door. Mi Ha eyed herself in the mirror. It was time to upgrade her uniform to a size L. She waited until not a single cm was gained in the past 2 months. The doorknob turned, followed by her mother peeking in, and Mi Ha turned quickly to hide her face. ¡°Aigoo, my beautiful daughter clipped up her hair! Don¡¯t be shy!¡± She quickly pulled out the pins and ran downstairs to eat breakfast. Opposite to her calmly sat her brother. No words were exchanged but he sported a knowing look. The morning has turned awkward. He looked at her some more before he said, ¡°I wired some money to your bank account last night. Now you can stop whining about playing the same game as Won Bin.¡± Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. In her elatedness, she nearly flipped the table over by jumping out of her seat and giving her brother a big bear hug. As she left for school, Mi Ha planned to buy the game by sneaking out during lunchtime. She had classroom duty after school, and when she was done the game store would close. By the time Mi Ha arrived at school she had bumped into two of her friends, who congratulated her on the long awaited 18th birthday. Their school was for the wealthy and she attended with a sports scholarship. When her friends realized Mi Ha could play the same game as them, they began to chatter excitedly about the VRMMORPG, which was released 2 years ago called <>. Its name came from a 99% likeness to the real world where one lived in the projected future. It¡¯s a very popular social game with youths due to the ability to travel to the outer space and meeting new people. Her beloved next-door oppa also played the game, but she didn¡¯t have enough allowance to buy the headset which was used to connect to Non-Fiction. In all honesty, she only wanted to play because of her crush. As every student filed to the cafeteria, Mi Ha also got up. ¡°Cheon Mi Ha!¡± called a bulky male student outside the classroom door. ¡°Sunbae! What¡¯s wrong?¡± She wanted to leave quickly to buy her game. ¡°Did you forget about Tae Kwon Do practice for the upcoming tournament?¡± Mi Ha lightly stomped her feet, ¡®How could I forget?¡¯ She was too love-struck and forgot all about Tae Kwon Do. There was no way to skip practice since she can¡¯t risk her scholarship. ¡°OK, I¡¯ll join you after I make a phone call!¡± Mi Ha quickly dialed her brother¡¯s number. ¡°Oppa! Your uni classes end after 2, right? Can you please, please, please help me buy the game? It¡¯s called <>!¡± Her sunbae tapped his feet impatiently. ¡°Oops, I have to go now! Thanks a bunch!¡± Tae Guk stared blankly at his cellphone. He didn¡¯t get a word in. After class, there was an important Student Government meeting. ¡°Was that Mi Ha? It¡¯s her birthday today, isn¡¯t it?¡± He looked at his girlfriend next to him. He was one lucky guy. His girlfriend offered to help him buy it. He gave her a light peck, gave her instructions, and invited her over for dinner. Mi Ha sighed upon arriving home. Rushing to the kitchen to grab a sip of water, she failed to notice a familiar person sitting on their living room couch. She turned her head while chugging down a glass of water. A shattering of precious glass echoed through the house, and hurried steps rushed into the room. ¡°Young lady, I hope you have enough money left to replace the glass.¡± The mother sternly said. ¡°Eomeoni, it¡¯s not her fault. She was just surprised to see me.¡± The familiar girl from the couch stood up and offered help to the surprised Mi Ha. ¡°Unni! You really scared me! Why didn¡¯t you say anything?¡± the girl exclaimed, ¡°And why are you here? Where¡¯s oppa?¡± ¡°You oppa still has a meeting, and he asked me to buy the game for you. Before your mom came into the room, she was setting it up in your room!¡± After the words left her mouth, she had to sweat drop at how fast Mi Ha left the room. Upstairs, all the fatigue left Mi Ha¡¯s body. On her bed laid her dog, Tobu, but what was important was the headset next to him. Briefly, she pondered what would happen if she put the headset on Tobu, would he be able to play, too? In better judgment, she decided it was too expensive for her dog. ¡°Tobu, get up boy.¡± She replaced Tobu¡¯s spot, and thanked him mentally for warming it up. Mi Ha could barely contain her excitement at the thought of playing with Won Bin oppa. She lay down comfortably, lifted the headset and did some breathing in preparation. Putting it on, her world immediately darkened. Next Chapter Chapter 1: Birth of a Lady

I am only a voice to guide you.¡± Mi Ha frowned. Only one has seen her naked and he didn¡¯t speak a human language. ¡°You are free to customize your character¡¯s appearance.¡± The faux Mi Ha was thoroughly evaluated by the real Mi Ha. Her goal was to impress Won Bin oppa and that includes looking ladylike. ¡°Make me paler.¡± The figure lost a little bit of tan. ¡°Paler.¡± The figure lost a little more tan. ¡°More!¡± The figure lost 2 years of tan. Mi Ha smiled and the voice figured the creator was finally satisfied and asked, ¡°Any further enhancements?¡± ¡°Yes, make my hair above my butt, and can you lose the bruises? Oh, that¡¯s good. Make my eyebrows thinner, too. Can you also make me a little shorter?¡± ¡°I¡¯m sorry, unless it¡¯s a race characteristic or a game option, there is no way to change your height due to a change in perception.¡± Mi Ha eyed her copy for a few minutes. After that, Mi Ha almost wept by looking at the unfamiliar girl in front of her. Mi Ha tried more names: Love, Hot Stuff, Cutie, Angel, Gorgeous, Dear. ¡°I¡¯m sorry but I can do a search and offer suggestions based on your current inputs.¡± Mi Ha clapped her hands and told the voice to hurry. In a minute, a screen of suggested names appeared in front of her.

¡°Won Bin!¡± A handsome man with loosely styled reddish hair paused in his steps and reluctantly turned to the familiar voice. The dim streetlights shone partially on another man, who soon rushed up and placed an unwelcome hand on Woo Bin¡¯s shoulder. The strings of fate tied him to a persistent pair of siblings. ¡°Tae Guk... I have no business with you.¡± He gently slapped away his schoolmate and also neighbor¡¯s hand from his shoulder. ¡°Don¡¯t be like that. Want to drop by my house?¡± Tae Guk grabbed Woo Bin¡¯s arm and started pulling him towards home, but Woo Bin firmly rooted his feet by putting all his weight in. ¡°I know what you are thinking, but ¡®no¡¯.¡± ¡°C¡¯mon. You rejected poor Mi Ha the other day. You should be nicer to girls.¡± Tae Guk smiled slyly. His sister tortures him by mentioning Won Bin every day, and in turn he returns his suffering to the source by bringing up Mi Ha. Won Bin immediately made a painful look, ¡°If you were hospitalized like I was from your sister¡¯s shitty cookies, you¡¯d run too at the sight of them.¡± ¡°Hey! It was no better for me. I ended up glued to the toilet for hours!¡± Tae Guk shuddered at the memory. ¡°Besides, she¡¯s not cooking today. My mom and my girlfriend probably made dinner.¡± Tae Guk felt Woo Bin¡¯s resistance let up, and he coolly added, ¡°You might regret missing this dinner. I have a big surprise for you.¡± Contrary to what he expected, Woo Bin¡¯s sudden burst of laughter sang through the empty street. Wary, Tae Guk asked, ¡°W-why are you having that ¡®I-know-something-you-don¡¯t¡¯ laugh?" The laughter became louder yet it broke as suddenly as it came, ¡°Let¡¯s just say¡ Mi Ha tells me everything, but I don¡¯t tell her everything.¡± Won Bin shook off Tae Guk¡¯s hand and waved before heading back home, leaving a confused figure behind.
As Gem regained her consciousness, she quickly sat up and covered her nose to block out the onslaught of various odors. ¡®Ugh¡ It smells like fart! ...Where am I?¡¯ She raised her head and looked around in vain as darkness clouded her vision. Rubbing her eyes repeatedly, Gem couldn¡¯t believe there was still a place on Earth where light did not shine. ¡®Is this the future of Seoul? A city without light?¡¯ A pair of sudden voices startled her, ¡°Ah¡ If only other cities offered the assassin class, then I wouldn''t be stuck in this stink hole.¡± ¡°Can¡¯t be helped, harpies laid siege here since a month ago. We can¡¯t go out during the day.¡± Their voices indicated she was alone in a room with two males. Gem wasn¡¯t sure if calling attention was a good move, but she remembered her voice didn¡¯t change. Gathering her undertones, Gem chimed in, ¡°Excuse me bros, but where are we?¡± Surprised, two distinct curses were muttered before the first male who spoke spat, ¡°Oh great, another dude in this cramp-ass space.¡± The second at least answered the question, ¡°Obviously we are in Soul City. She tried turning the doorknob, but it was locked. ¡®What¡¯s this? Break the prison game?¡¯ She took a back stance and swiftly delivered a heavy kick. The shock wave went back to her leg, and Gem immediately bowed over. D-ding.

The other two persons in the room screamed no as the door tumbled awkwardly. The daylight poured into the room and Gem shielded her eyes. Through the gaps of her finger, Gem saw big birdlike humans guarding every inch of sky. The rays of light flickered on and off as the harpies fly about each other. Without warning, Gem quickly tumbled back as a large razor-sharp claw swooped in from the door. She quickly turned around and dashed to the far corner of the room. One of the unlucky guys was caught and died an instant death. The other guy also jumped back to the edges of the wall. The giant claw grabbed persistently at every inch of space all the while screeching at a deafening volume. Gem grabbed her ears but it failed to block anything.

She never expected an online game to be so intense. Now she was stuck here with a human eating bird-thing while the the other person mysteriously vaporized. ''Oppa...'' All at once, Gem began to hear distant flares and the high screeches of the harpies. The disturbance in the air drew the attention of the harpy at the door as the explosions multiplied. Gem felt slight vibrations under her feet, and she realized the harpy has retracted her claw and flew off. ''Why is the ground shaking??'' The quaking quickly intensified and Gem clung desperately at the wall for balance. Her survival instincts told her not to go out, but curiosity told her to take a look, so she clumsily tumbled along the walls to the door. Gem held tightly to the doorframe and looked up. The harpies were being hit by fire arrows and what seemed like streams of fireball. Most of them continue to burn in midair while a few crashed horribly to the ground. The attacks were coming over the city walls from the outside. Although Gem did not understand the situation, she stormed out in frustration. ''I should find Oppa. He is so fragile. If he gets hurt, I''ll never forgive these people!'' She hurriedly examined her surroundings, ''The biggest building...'' She was in a wide open street. Most buildings were stone-built and one or two stories high and arraigned in a grid. The tallest construct was a tower opposite from the city gate and four stories high. The exterior was white stone and she could make out a bunch of moving figures looking out from the tower top. ''Maybe there.'' With the tower as her destination, Gem soon navigated the alleyways in between the buildings, while noticing none were open. It was a ghost town, and if this was the future of Seoul, she thought it''s better to live in the real world. Her breath became heavy and her body was sluggish. ''It''s so hard to breathe...'' The effects from the harpy was still in place. Gem stopped running. Since awhile ago, the sounds of explosions had stopped but the cries of the harpies continued. She went to the end of the alleyway and discretely took a peek. Coming over the southern city walls were numerous humans charging on flying mounts. Most wielded swords, some held something Gem couldn''t discern. ''Wow, a-are those unicorns? ...Maybe not.'' The mounts had beautiful white wings which shone even from a distance. Even though Gem liked horses with wings, something else had caught her attention. From the rest of the three directions flocked in groups which were distinct from the initial. They held different weapons, it was more mix-and-match even with the mounts. One looked like a bird on fire. ''No way¡ A pig with wings?'' Unprepared, Gem clumsily crouched with hands overhead as the humans and mounts zoomed past above the alley. She decided she couldn''t keep hiding and continued her way to the tower. On the way, Gem noticed the dead harpies on the ground were slowly fading away and in replacement left unknown objects. She went closer for an inspection and prayed the harpies were actually dead. There were two objects on the ground ¨C Gem reluctantly picked it up. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
Harpy Feather A dull bird feather from an anguished harpy. Due to the flames of magic, the feather has lost all magical properties.
Harpy Talon A sharp, poisonous nail from a harpy. Advised to be handle with care.
¡°Eek!¡± At once, Gem threw the talon away. ''Wait, maybe I can save it and make someone I don''t like eat it.'' Gem examined her person. She was wearing a homely and dull green knee-length dress with two pockets at the side, and a pair of worn-out brown boots. ''That''ll do.'' Retrieving and pocketing the feather and talon, Gem searched the harpies along the way for more items. Nearing the tower, Gem took a glance to the sky. She found the harpies had largely decreased and her mood brightened at the thought of soon meeting her oppa. The tower loomed over Gem and casted a long shadow. She searched two times about the tower, but there was not an entrance. Gem stepped away and threw her head back, trying to catch a glimpse of the tower top. Numerous heads poked out from the tower windows and looked down curiously. ''Don''t tell me...'' It was an ridiculous idea but she yelled as politely as she could, ¡°Excuse me! Is there someone who could let their hair down?¡± Immediately everyone started laughing, to which Gem became mad. A chirpy young man bent out the second floor window, teasing, ¡°Hey pretty lady! Aw, don''t frown! It ruins your nice face... Well, you look cute angry, too!¡± His fellow mates all began laughing comically, while a leering expression adorned their faces. Heated, Gem quickly covered her body defensively but no sooner had she done that, her hands went to loosen her boots. While the young man was unaware, Gem pitched her boots at his face. He fell from her sight. ''Score!'' Gem grinned proudly until a message popped up.

Maybe she had a certain affinity for losing money. Leaving to find another way of entry, Gem heard a wait from the tower. There was no entryway previously, but a portion of stones were slowly sliding back and then it moved to the side. A pair of hands waved Gem inside. As soon as Gem walked in, barefooted, the crowd was staring silently at her with interest. There were a lot of people. ''Are they other players?'' Looking about, the interior of the tower was just like the exterior ¨C cold white stones. ¡°Look, she is still wearing novice equipment.¡± ¡°You''re right! She shouldn''t be here.¡± The sound of murmurs float about. ¡°That means she was running around outside with the harpies? No way! They are at least level 60!¡± Surprise and awe filled their faces. ¡°Maybe she''s wearing the novice equipments to hide her level...¡± Some nodded in agreement. ¡°Pfft ¨C what a show off!¡± Gem could hear them but she didn''t understand what the deal was. She looked around for Won Bin but saw no familiar face. ''I''d recognize him anywhere.'' Swimming through the crowd, she climbed the stone stairs to the next floor. Again, she was faced with a large crowd and they all turned to look at her. Gem saw the young man whom she knocked unconscious from earlier and his crew. The crowd looked on curiously as she walked over to them. As much as Gem wanted to hit the young man again, she already had a debt of 700 coppers. ¡°Hmph! It''s your lucky day!¡± She was brash for someone who just started playing. Moving along after not spotting Won Bin, she proceeded to the next floor. Suddenly, the tower began to sway heavily. A long ear-splitting cry caused everyone to wince and cover their ears while unsteadily falling backwards. Despite the fact that Gem had terrific balance due to Tae Kwon Do, various bodies grabbed on to her meanwhile pulling her down too. ''Ow'' As soon as Gem''s behind met the floor, she received a message.
Alert! Angry at the blood spilled of her kinswomen, the Queen Harpy, Zeas has descended. Location: Soul City
Zeas'' Cry has decreased your speed by 50%.
''Oh no!'' Not being able to stand, Gem crawled painfully slow up the stairs to the top floor. Many people were groveling on the ground and clutching their ears while groans filled the room. This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience. ''There is no way oppa is here.'' Gem ducked her head and crawled some more until she was beneath the tower window. Slapping her hands on the window sill, she momentarily noted the ruggedness and rawness of the stone before peeking her head above and observing the situation. Instantly, a strong wind chaffed her face. Zea was a quarter of the size of Soul City. Every flap of her wings swept the fighting humans away. It seemed like they were having a hard time getting near. Gem saw the fighters slowly retreating, and the queen harpy did not give chase but continued to destroy the city just by the flap of her wings. Roofs were being lifted, flags were torn, and all these objects were slowly being sucked into the vortex around her. As the debris spiraled, it has formed a defensive wall around Zea. ''Oppa is not here. That means he must be down there somewhere!'' Gem decided she must do something before Won Bin gets hurt. Gathering all her strength, she tightly gripped the rough sides of the window and hopped up the window sill. The ragged edges of the stones scratched her bare foot, but she ignored the pain. Drawing in all the air to her lungs, she yelled, ¡°Ugly face!!! Look here!!¡± Though her voice reverberated throughout the tower, the noise from the storm outside easily diminished her cry to a squeak. Without giving up, Gem screamed out all the profanities in her book. A nervous voice came behind her, ¡°Uh, w-what are you up to?¡± Gem didn''t even respond and continued to yell the things which Won Bin says frequently. It continued on for about 5 minutes and then she heard a ''ding''.
