《Soul's Journey》 Prologue - And so there was a single blade of grass... A single blade of grass lay in a plain, next to an ocean of trees, or a forest if you would call it that. This grass was all alone in a fertile dirt area that was without plants for some reason or another. If this grass could find out, it would hear that all of the other plants had been burnt because of a rare forest fire of an extreme variety, even burning their roots. This single blade of grass of grass was very small, and any botanist would be able to tell this grass was just born. And this was just the truth, for at this time, this single blade of grass was being introduced into the world. ¡ ¡°Welcome to World #2396, otherwise known as Alsef. Your Soul Branding and knowledge imparting will soon commence, brace yourself for some pain.¡± This single blade of grass glowed for a moment although it was less visible than a single firefly. For this single blade of grass it felt like it was torn into pieces, shredded and burned all in a single moment. If this blade of grass had a voice, and it wished that it did, all living things within kilometers would instantly pale from the pain that would be visible in the voice. ¡°Thank you for your patience you are Soul #258392013859306. Please view your Status to see some basic information, to view your Status look through your received knowledge.¡± As the voice faded and disappeared, the single blade of grass blew lightly in the wind as it soaked up the heat from the sun and endured the shock of the pain it had felt while attempting to recall what had been said. After a very short while the pain had disappeared from the grass¡¯ consciousness. Finally recalling the sounds he had heard he slowly pieced together the meanings using the knowledge he had acquired. The grass also quickly looked through this knowledge. After about 30 seconds the grass had learned and looked through enough to continue. Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Chapter 1.1 - And so the grass spread... A single blade of grass lay in a plain, next to an ocean of trees, or a forest if you would call it that. This grass was all alone in a fertile dirt area that was without plants for some reason or another. However this single blade of grass was braving the heat of the sun as it processed this energy into sugar to grow. Luckily for this single blade of grass, the dirt was slightly wet, or moist if you would call it that, and absorbing the water in the dirt was a necessity for this grass. From the outside, any observer would see a single blade of grass swaying lightly in the wind as it felt the heat from the sun. However on the inside this process is not as simple as it seems. This grass has two important things to do, and at the same time as well. Grass has to process the energy from the heat to convert the water in its body and the carbon dioxide in the air to form sugars to fuel itself. In theory this seems like a simple task, however in practice it is not so easy. First to actually gather the energy from the heat is no easy task in itself. Imagine sitting on the sun and focusing all your attention on the slight amount of heat you feel from the sun. Secondly Grass has to spread its roots and absorb the miniscule amount of water into its body to use for photosynthesis with the heat energy and carbon dioxide from the air. It would be similar to gathering water from a muddy river using a single pipette to gather as much as you can. Now put these two operations together and you will be doing what Grass is doing. Namely feeling the slight heat on himself, breathing, and at the same time taking water out of a muddy river using a pipette. Now imagine doing this the whole time the sun is up, which on average is about 10 hours. This may seem a bit over exaggerated but it is essentially what Grass is doing. After around 8 hours of this process, the sun has gone down and Grass could no longer do photosynthesis. If one were to measure the height of Grass compared to the morning they would find that Grass had grown about half an inch taller. Surprisingly this has almost doubled Grass¡¯ height. The next process that Grass has to work on is the extending of the roots. This is very important, if you do not extend your roots it can be very hard to absorb moisture from the soil when there has been no rain, or the grass will not get enough. Thus the extending of the roots is a vital point in the growth of any plant. To grow the roots, Grass has to stretch his roots downward. Similar to how a person would stretch out their legs taut, however, Grass will do this as long as the sun is not up, which is around 12 hours. Photosynthesis and growing the roots will be Grass¡¯ main things to do for the next couple days. The next morning Grass was surprised that his absorption of heat and water had increased. Grass quickly realized that this was attributed to his growth of his roots and actual body. Grass comparatively deduced that the increase was about 25% faster than before. ¡°6 inches into the soil, and i¡¯m around 4 inches tall so far. Its been around a week since I came into being. My next goal should be reproduction and the continuation of photosynthesis. I still haven¡¯t gotten any Soul Points after my growth, I guess i have not done enough yet growth yet.¡± ¡°At this point my goal will be photosynthesis during the day and reproduction during the night using rhizomes. This will also increase the range of my roots and increase my absorption as well.¡± For Grass to reproduce it will have to spread it¡¯s roots horizontally near to the soil, then it will have to grow buds which will then turn into more strands of grass. It is almost similar to reptiles re-growing a leg, except it is a whole new leg. The end results of reproduction will be increased photosynthesis speed as the new strands gain the ability to absorb the heat from the sun. Over the next two days the grass had formed a small spider web like structure in the soil surrounding itself. This structure will turn into a network of roots connecting the now growing Grass. The diameter was around 1 inch with Grass in the center. At this point buds had slowly started to sprout from the roots. The next day, about five hours after the sun had come out, Grass suddenly felt as if he had grown 12 new arms. With this new realization a slight warm feeling spread over Grass for a moment. Grass could tell instinctively that this was from a similar source comparatively to the imparting of knowledge and soul branding. Suddenly an image appeared in Grass¡¯ mind as the warm feeling disappeared.

Grass quickly realized that this was the Status the voice had told him about. Looking over the information, Grass understood the most basic things, but was still confused about the Goals, and Soul Points. After a little bit of thinking, Grass realized that their was 12 new strands of grass and that Grass¡¯ own height was around 4.5 inches. Wondering how the 3 Soul Points had come about, quickly Grass thought of the History branch menu. Suddenly another Image appeared in his mind to the side of the other one. At this time he thought of hiding the status window and it disappeared.

¡°So one will increase the rate at which I grow, and one will increase the rate at which i can attain energy. In other words If I get one, I will be at a disadvantage without the other to reset the balance between consumption and speed.¡± Another sigh nearly escaped Grass¡¯ nonexistent lips. Closing the last menu Grass went over the information learned from the menus. Based on the information Grass¡¯ main goal would be to increase the strands of grass and grow, which will come passively with time. The next day a slight warm feeling passed through Grass¡¯ body late into the day. Quickly understanding that it was based it was the advancement of growth he ignored it as he continued with his now daily routines. For the next five days Grass passed through the days like usual, extending his spiderweb of roots underneath the surface and gaining energy through photosynthesis. However Grass¡¯ bodies had started to dry out from the lack of rain for the past four days. Realizing his mistake, for the next five days, Grass extended from the base of each strand roots into the ground around five inches. Almost satisfied, Grass then continued to extend these roots a whole foot into the ground before being satisfied, then Grass continued with his past processes. ¡ Grass silently observed the Status menu.

Where there was once was a wide, rich, dirt field, there now lay a circle of grass with a diameter of about five or six feet. The closer to the edges of the circle, the shorter the grass was. The very center strand of grass was the tallest, at around 10 inches.
