《Questioning the Basic》 Chapter 1: Bidirectional Conversation
Regarding Mana, there were lot of theories that trying to fully explain the subject. Some were concerned about the manifestation of Mana in form of magic; such as a simple fireball that widely used by the apprentice of fire magician. Some tried to compare the Mana to the power that granted by the higher being (Divine), such as the blessing ability that were piously chanted by the Church of Freya''s benefactor.
Some tried to explore the affinity of the magic itself. What is light ? Why it''s in the same time strong and weak against dark ? How Wind affinity allow the user to fly? and Why were Water essential for life? How Fire burn? And How the Earth pull? No one know. But Knowledge progress. Tested by Scholar and Magic-enthusiast for centuries. There is one thing that could be concluded..
[p=center]Mana is energy[/p]
That''s why melee-class, where they''re perform skills required to have certain amount of mana. The correlation of mana with their magic counterpart were obvious, and would be redundant to be discussed. However, their correlation with their melee counterpart somehow rather blurry. Most of the time melee class perform their action through the use of the stamina; the energy of the body itself. Drawing mana to power the skill were action of strengthening the damage output through the use of external energy were considered...

"And seems the magic formed by structuring mana in certain forms, henceforth magic circle." "I see..." comment the young elf novices to no one in particular, well except if you count three piles of book in front of him. But since book couldn''t talk back -except for certain kind, which surely would horrified the reader- his comment certainly only be meant for himself. The young elf, had certain... appearances. He was short, 3/4 adult size, with a glistening-yellow blond hair and deep aquamarine eyes. A typical shoujo anime boy wannabe with a lot dose of kawaii as a side(puffy cheek and the bright smile that could bring laughter to the whole neighborhood). His real age of course better not to be mentioned, people have their secret, and secret of the age weren''t exclusive to female, right? Since he was child, he fascinated by magic, turning your constantly-barking neighbor''s dog into ant, and step on "it" were a delightful idea, no? If you master teleportation, no one would need to worry to be late to appointment, and world hunger should be an easy, solvable, problem. However, the most revered, the most true, and the most absolute, law of reality; Science states; Magic doesn''t exist. It simply could not be exist. Except perhaps if someone could somehow maintain nuclear fusion and fission reaction without exploding the entire neighborhood (and radiating the rest of the world into cancer-ridden society). Therefore, instead of building impossibly structured machine that could do just that, it would be more cost-effective just to use magic in place that you could set the rule for yourself. Virtual reality Royal Road Today were his first day, and as any aspiring magician knew, learning about the magic in the library were a first step to become one. However... "Seriously?" shout the elf with voice that could be heard in the whole library, terribly annoyed. "Ck ck ck... Library is a place to learn, child. Not to shout." chuckle the senior librarian who intrigued with the elf constant reading. "Sorry, sir..?" "Priel. And yours?" "Vincent Valitius, sir Priel. I''m sorry about my... inappropriate behavior." "Ha, try to reduce your sin with nice words! My, my.." Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel. "...." "That is fine, child. For the scholarly individual like us, there are a point when you stuck in your studies. Even though, the way of expressing the frustration differs from person to person, It would be wise to choose methods that would not disturb other people. Imagine, how you could progress in your study, if every quarter hour or so, someone shout their frustration, hmm?" "I''m sorry." "Ha,ha, it''s okay. Why were you shouting, if I may ask?" "err..I was learning magic..." "And... most of them about attacking! A simple kaboom, if I may be bold.." "Yes, that''s true, this is a secret, but Magician loves... flashy things, and the evocation branch, offer that the most. Well, beside summon-type spell in conjuration branch, but you see my point." "I know! It''s so boring!.... But... hmm... could I make a spell myself?" "Well, if you know how. Even though... it would be wise to wait until you had enough mana. Creating spell are very taxing process, not to mention the kaboom" "Oh, not to worry, I could always power it with outside mana." "Outside mana?" "Well, it''s my made-up term, your mana in the status bar called inside mana. And the mana outside you called, well.. outside mana." "Are you sure with that.... postulate, child?" "It''s only my conjecture, but how we explain why we regain mana after rest? If energy were really conserved, something should powered our internal mana. Health, satiety, and stamina are not the one which powered it, (magician have practically zero of them, and magician had lots of mana) and we never see the decreasing health or stamina when we rest to regain the mana. Satiety is out the question. If satiety power the mana, it logical to says that bread make mana --Alchemist would be bankrupt, and chef would raise to power-- On the other hand satiety does regen health and stamina, when we rest, we regain our health and stamina, no? But our satiety is lowered. Therefore, the only logical means, mana came from the outside, the environment, the nature itself. Like water that fall to lower place, mana''s seeking equilibrium, and transfer to the place with a lower mana, namely ourselves after we use mana consuming skill." "Mana regeneration are the termed we used to explain the rate of transfer the outside mana to our internal mana, and our internal Mana means our mana capacity. Simple as that. Therefore, rather than using our internal mana. It is possible to just outside mana. Even area of effect magic also powered by outside mana, the internal mana only used to draw the instruction and act as the catalyst, internal mana were often used because it''s well.. easier to control. So, even beginner like me could use 7-circle spell, if I somehow could redirect the outside mana to my use." "I see, i see, hmm how about I lend you my laboratory? It''s not much, but I''m sure you could test your hypothesis there." "Really? Thank you!" "And this is a little prize for explaining such beautiful explanation of mana to me. Haha, even though you''re still a child." said the senior Librarian handing ten gold coins and an intricated golden key. "Isn''t this too much for new freedman like me?" ask the elf, stupefied. "Research are not cheap you see, just tell me the result, after you succeed, or fail. Ha ha ha. Ehm.. Most importantly, my lab just two street across the library, go there and bring me the good news! " "Thank, sir Piri! Bye!" shout the elf running. Next Chapter Chapter 2: First day in Lab "Electrica...Conductiv..no..no..Reverse Enchanting? Perhaps?" Vin muttered continuously to himself. He faced rather prevalent difficulties in applying his theory. The bane of most researchers; Technicalities He sighed. Inward. Understanding the reality doesn''t equal mastery of the reality itself. If that were the case, Newton could collapse the whole continent by just reversing the gravity, and Einstein could create nuclear bomb only by chanting E=mc^2. And that were plainly impossible. For a good reason. He needs something... or perhaps.. someone? Who were capable of magic more than him, and willing to help for, let''s say, limited compensation. Someone who desperate enough, always trying to sell his service, and seldom to have a willing buyer. Hmm... Ah. Demon. Yes, yes, that''s true. Their kind were shunned due to mortal tendency to favor the good faction instead the evil faction. The latter offer hell-damned afterlife, though, so their choice were somehow justified. Anyway, I only need a little magical catalyst. A little unimportant demon. The kind the hell would not quarrel about if it''s mistreated. Some imp perhaps, they would be less demanding, right? [p=center]****[/p]
[p=center]Summoning the Should-Not-Be-Summoned for Beginner[/p][p=left]Yes, honored reader, this book were about summoning Devil, Demon, and the like you probably knew about. Why the title you may ask? Unfortunately using the title such as "The secret of the Dark Art" and "Demonic Tome" rendering our print to be refused in any children-friendly bookstore and prohibited in almost all library in the whole continent. By naming this book with euphemised title like "Summoning the Should-Not-Be-Summoned for Beginner" we could pass this book as those dark-brooding Novelette (with a little nudge of descriptive romanticism), targeted at those desperate teenager (which were our market target) who hates the whole world for no apparent reason. And since any respectable librarian would not give a peek for books that they claim as not real literature (But need to be put in the shelf anyway), we could easily pass this book to your nearest bookstore!! (We also put a spell in this book, so whoever read it and not the one who really willing to summon would be presented with that mentioned reading!) We have vampires![/p]
[p=left]Yes we aware that you people were a selfish bunch, and love exclusivity about your art. But, our sponsor, namely; evil god, were also god and GOD need mortal to worship them. Less mortal less power. Means we''ll always lose to those Good-Goody Two Shoes. Simple as that.[/p]
"...."
[p=center]How to Summon: Basic Imp-01[/p][p=left]Imp were a small lesser goblin. Mischievous rather than pure evil (great for beginner!). Imp have rather small magical prowess, but quite apt in the lesser spell of conjuration, illusion, and even lesser evocation. First-timer recommended to summon imp. They only need 100 mL of your blood to survive (not banished) for a week![/p]
[p=left]Summoning imp were easy. Draw a reversed star in a piece of paper with the blood as ink, and chant this incantation; Under the blood-strengthen Contract, I summon thee from the hell itself, Come to my assistance. O little child of darkness!"[/p]
"Erm.. There''s something wrong.Summoning should not be that simple. Contracted evil were...lawful and they followed their contract to the letter. But they love loopholes...." "Ah! The book never said the imp will obey me! He perhaps would cause chaos the instant it summoned, and I''m too weak too control him. What to do.. What to do.." "Well I have ten golds from sir Piri, how about.." [p=center]****[/p] "Miss Acolyte.." The mentioned acolyte surprised by the sudden greetings. She look around and found no one, after five ghastly seconds (and three where she start to questioning her sanity), she immediately realized an elf child were tugging her robe. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. Embarrassed, she hurriedly reply. "Sorry boy. don''t see you down there." "Now, how could I help you?" said the acolyte smiling. "Umm... could you give me a little bit holy water, miss?" Perplexed. The Acolyte look the boy carefully, he''s an elf, that obvious, with short stature of 9-10 years old human children (but elves life longer than human, still children were children). His attire showed that he were those freedmen that sent by Gaia. She doesn''t really mind, giving the boy holy water. But the problems were even though she joined the order six month ago she often still failed to create the holy water (she could only do it three times a day!). sometimes she considered if being acolyte of Freya were right choice for her. She loves to help. But. it seems that she''s not capable. It would be bad to failed in front of this boy. Adult should be seen as a successful person who could solve anything! Else, how children could depend on them? "Why you need holy water, boy?" "My current home (laboratory), threatened by evil! (I intend to summon imp) I live alone (just got here) and... could not afford exorcism..(I can''t perform it) , my caretaker not available this week. (Sir Piri in the library) .But it''s said holy water could repel the evil! (Which is true) I just need a little bit miss!(Which is also true)" said Vin, spouting the weasel word the best he could. "Ah, you should speak with the priest about that, boy. But yes... he charge a lot.. And your caretaker gone this week? Well.. wait a minute." muttered the acolyte as she took the canteen that the boy eagerly given to her. She walked to the fountain and fill it full. Please Freya! Let it work!! "With her grace. With her compassion. With her benevolence. " "Standing here is your servant." "Asking for Blessing. Upon the flask of earthly bound. To be purified, To be sanctified." "Vitae." "Aqua." "Sancti." A shimmering white light glow around the canteen. Brightly. Brighter than any holy water spell, she had ever cast.
You successfully created Holy water
Acolyte were servant of Goddess, but herself must also remember that she also the servant of the people. With great power comes great responsibility to help those born with the inherent misfortune. By creating holy water as a selfless act to help the elf child with conviction of the heart, Freya had decided that you passed the ordaining test. Holy water now were Intermediate Lv.01

Go to Church of Freya and speak with Priestess Williamna
Shocked. The acolyte were stunned for few seconds, before Vin tug her robe again. "Sorry, boy I were..distracted. Here." "Thank you!! Oh, I''m sorry I forgot to introduce my self, how rude of me!! My name Vin, and who are you miss?" "My name Lillian, Vin. You don''t need to call me miss! Just call me Lillian. okay!" "Oh, okay, thank you Lillian!" said Vin, running toward the market. "Bye Vin!!" shout Lillian. "And thank you." mutter Lillian, walking toward the east church. Finally. Previous Chapter Next Chapter Chapter 3: Sugar-Coating Departing from the nice acolyte, Vin continue with his plan. After fifteen minutes of walk, he arrived in Serabough Market Center, the most bustling location in the whole city. "Hello Uncle! Do you have any egg, salt, baking soda, milk, and butter?" said Vin, waving his hand back and forth. "Certainly! How much do you need, young man?" replied the merchant with a smile, silently calculating possible profit to be "gained" from the boy. "A dozen egg, two bottles of salt, two bottles of baking soda, a glass of milk, and five slices of butter!" "That would be Three Silvers and Fifty Coppers." said the merchant. "Okay, here you go!" "And here your grocery, come again!" Excellent.. [p=center]****[/p] "Excuse me, are you the blacksmith here, sir?" "Yes, that''s me. What do you want?" "Do you have any iron, sir?" "Of course I have Iron! What you take me for? I''m a blacksmith you know!" "Umm, I need iron dust, with just a little bit of copper in it. Could you make it sir? The smaller the dust, the better!" "Iron dust he? I never see any people interested in that, I''ve a lot of it. Comes from sharpening the blade all the time, wait a minute. WARREN!" shout the blacksmith. *tap tap tap tap* A teenage boy ran down from the upper stairs. He was sweating. Profusely. From his attire, this boy must be the blacksmith''s apprentice. Apprenticeship were never easy, Vin thought. You must do everything your master said. Of course there are nice masters, but most of master were nice and demanding master, the one who thought the best way to teach apprentice were let them experience the hard work in life continuously. A glance to the boy expression, people could say, he got the latter type of master. "Sweep the iron and copper dust from the sharpening room and give it to this customer! Chop-chop! I don''t have all day, and you still have your unfinished job!" "Okay, master." said the boy dejectedly. After fifteen minutes of laborious sweeping. "Here your iron and copper dust, Mr. customer." said the tired apprentice, giving him two jars of the dust. It seems if his master weren''t looking, he would collapse to the floor in instant. "Umm.. How much is it?" Ask Vin. "Well, we don''t usually sell the dust, let''s see, how about I weigh it, and you pay the normal metal price in weight, plus the grinding cost?" "Hmm, okay." "That would be 30 silvers and 40 Coppers." "That''s too much! How about 25 silvers?" "30." "26 and I would praise your good job in front of your master." "29 and fifty coppers, and I''ll put you in our regular customer list." "27, that''s if you don''t mind to be mean to a young child." "28 and fifty coppers, and that''s if you don''t mind to deem my labor''s free." "Deal!" "...." [p=center]****[/p] Back to the laboratory. Vin begin to conduct his plan. "There is no way, I''m going to give my blood to that imp! 100 ml is a lot! I going to get anemia! And possibly tetanus from making cut in my vessel! This medieval age don''t come with sterilized syringe don''t they?" complained Vin. Vin began to boil the water and prepared the salt and baking soda. Next, he carefully weigh the needed amount. He put salt and and the baking soda to the buffer phosphates. After careful inspection, he crack some of the eggs and separate the white from the yolk, adding the white to the milk. "Now, now, don''t precipitate... this age don''t came with emulsifier... Well, yolk is emulsifier, perhaps.." He took a cup of salt solution and added to the cup of white-milk, added with lots of yolk into the mortar. As he began to stir, he added sprinkle of iron and copper. He frowned, seeing the iron still comes in it''s powder form, floating in the surface of the emulsion, well of course he knew he should reduced it first into solutes form, then again, it''s not worth the effort. "Red color of the blood comes from the iron, and no, this lab doesn''t came with protein sequencer.. A bit of red lipid-soluble dye, should do the trick, I hope..." Ten minutes later, after heavy stirring. He finally created the gooey-looking red substances.

Vin draw the reversed-shaped star using the artificial blood in the piece of scrolls. Then he pour mixed of salt and sand around the scroll and sprinkle it with holy water. "Under the blood-strengthen Contract, I summon thee from the hell itself, Come to my assistance. O little child of darkness!" The star diagram glowing brightly, Vin could feel most of his mana sucked dry to the spell. A red smokes raised from the magic diagram. He had summoned the imp! "Ha haha! Foolish Mortal! Dare to summoned me when you''re so weak! Now I''ll wreak this who---*thump*" "What is this! You dare to imprison me mortal?" "It''s only salt-sand barrier, the most basic barrier. I''m fully aware the book never said you will obey me. So I took a little precaution." said Vin nonchalantly. "How dare you! Take this, fire ball!" said the imp releasing fireball from his hand. However the fire simply dissipate when it touch the barrier. "What? No matter! Teleport!" shout the imp, red light glow from his body, but after a while the light flicker, and disappear. "...." "Now, Now, Mr. Imp, would you be my colleagues?" "No! Why should I?! You''re nothing but a weak mortal!" "Well this weak mortal had managed to trap you." "It proofs nothing!" "And this weak mortal coincidentally able to produce lots and lots of blood, I could simply continue to pour the blood to your diagram, and you have to stay there, indefinitely." "...." "Here let''s me show you." Vin made another batch of Lesser Artificial Blood. "See, Mr. Imp, you could just stay there, like I don''t know? Five-ten years? You has created (Unique) Scroll of Lesser Teleport
[p=center](Unique) Scroll of Lesser Teleport[/p][p=left]Enable the caster to teleport another places instantly. Due to the novel application of magical technology used in the scroll, this scroll could be used for more than one time and the mana cost is tremendously lowered.[/p]
  • Only able to teleport to place that you had visited before or observed directly (via scrying)
  • Likehood of success were varies, there are possibility of teleport to fail.
  • Unless you specify the destination, you may ended in random place that the spell considered your destination
  • Unable to teleport to warded location.
  • Only be able to teleport yourself and no more than your maximum carrying capacity (depends on caster strength)
  • There are 15 minutes cool down per teleportation.

"Succes!! Succes!! SUCCESS!" shout Vin, jumping with joy; waving the teleport scroll excitingly. "See, Fou! Told you, it''d work!" "Alright! Fine! You''re right! Happy?" said Fou, lying on the table. Obviously exhausted, from "assisting" Vin with his research. "Now, let''s work! We''re making more! Lots and lots more!" "...." [p=center]****[/p] ~Four hour ago "Now Fou, the theory is pretty simple. I had told you that mana come from external source and magic is the art of harnessing those source, internal mana are CATALYST to redirect external mana." "But object, even simple object have at least a bit of mana, and this situation create equilibrium, which due to mana transport are passive transport, therefore, external mana stay outside and the object mana stay inside, because they had same mana concentration." "We could try actively transporting the mana to object, which were the conventional way to create magical object. But in the process it''d take lots of mana, which defeat our purpose." "First, increase the rate of transfer by open the "mana lid", you see mana lid were the limiting process of mana transfer, imagine like pouring water from half-closed bottle, it''d be faster to pour the water, if all the lid were open, magician have "more open" mana lid, that''s why their mana regeneration is faster than melee class." "Third, expand the mana capacity within the object. Therefore made it able to handle much more mana." "Fourth, devoid the object of mana, thoroughly. Simply consume all the object''s mana." "Finally, insulate the object of outside mana with seal. When you want to use the magic, just release the seal. The sudden opening would influx the mana so fast, it''d destabilize the object to brink of explosion. BUT, the sudden influx will provide the energy, that will easily pass the "magical minimum energy requirement" of a spell." "See for example if we use this technique on normal object it surely explode, but how if we use it in specially designed object, scroll for example." "Mana influx would cause stress, and the energy that build up will took the most easiest pathway to relieve the stressful condition, namely the spell that we had inscribe. Therefore activating the spell. Of course we had to optimize many things and to optimize the many things, required relentless devotion." "Therefore your assistance." "...." For Fou, the next four hour could only described by one word. Torture. "Fou, mana seems have an ineffective coefficient of partition... Half; k=0.5." "Means, every time you used magic of the object to the fullest, or extract it. Half of it''s original mana will remain. If we want to create this influx. At least the remaining mana should be negligent..... umm... let say... 0.0001%?" The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there. "So?" "Well... for each object that I already expand the mana capacity, you have to extract it... twenty times?" "WHAT? One times extracting, took third of my mana and a quarter of my stamina!" "Hmm... well you should put seal every time you finished the extraction, so the mana doesn''t come back inside." "...." "Good luck!!" [p=center]****[/p]

"Hu hu hu hu! I''d make lots of money!" First Chapter Previous Chapter Next Chapter Chapter 5: You Should Read those Fine Print "Therefore Chancellor, I am very certain this little proposal of mine should be considered as our best interest." The Chancellor sighed. Heavily. Three days ago ,twelfth-rang of Serabough Town''s bell indicate three years mark since he gained the promotion to became Serabough Magician Guild''s Chancellor. Sometimes he still reminiscing the passing of his master. His master were the true lover of magic and the most prominent researcher in her time. She would often complain to him that became chancellor were all paperwork and political intrigues, he could taste the disgust in her voice when she complained. He often thought that his master were exaggerating, how being the most high-ranked magician trouble her? Three years ago, when the twelfth Serabough Town''s bell just rang, he voice his thought to the fellow apprentice of his master. Unfortunately for him, his master seems to eavesdrop (even though in his defense, he was very sure that his master were spying on him, using her private scrying pool). To his surprise, his master didn''t reprimand him, She laugh and laugh with the most joyous voice he ever heard, somehow giving him creeps. The next day, he was appointed to become next chancellor. And four days after that, with clique farewell letter "let''s see how you handled it." she retired herself to the Greinard Village. Left him baffled and regretted. Become chancellor were far from easy. To keep everything in balance so there are no misuse of power, board of council were appointed in the same level of power as the chancellor himself. Getting through proposal from them took lots and lots of effort. Not to mention, most of them were those snobby noble, but with even bigger ego and holier-than-thou attitude. And one of the most difficult proposal to get through were the one that using significant amount of guild fund. Of course, he able to spend some fund if it were deemed necessary. Like laboratory accident that caused broken apparatus. But, the council accountant were very, very, very meticulous. One gold deviation from the market value and she would reprimand him to be more strict with the money. The fund were everyone money, not yours, she said. Therefore we must assure ourselves that the last copper were spend wisely. That''s why, now he were very hesitant. The young elf before him had shown him his research. It was the most amazing application of magic he ever see. Using external mana to power five-circle magic, so that even a peasant could use it? He almost get heart attack when the elf show teleportation scroll that could be used a hundred times. In that split second, he deemed it the most importance to be able to get this elf into his circle of colleague. The technology itself still mystery to him. He intrigued to learn the technique, but it seems Gaia issue protection of the elf research. The elf called it patent. The elf asked certain amount of exchange. And that exchange were costly. He could not imagine spend that amount of fund in this elf. The thought of the bashing he would got at board meeting were unbearable. But he couldn''t let the elf go. If he refused the elf could simply asked another town Magician Guild for exchange, and they would gladly welcome him, losing him wasn''t acceptable. "Very well, I... accept your offer. But you should gave us more than that one scroll, Let''s say, twenty?" "That is too much chancellor." "Hmm, how about I offer you certain class. I could see from your attire you''re the new freedmen right? I''m very certain that this class will offer you much benefit and will be suited toward your next research." "Well, okay. But, if somehow I feel your class were not to my liking. I will only supplied fifteen scrolls of your choice." "Agreed. Now, uh.. sorry I forget to catch your names." "Ha ha, that''s fine chancellor, I don''t know your names either, sometimes good conversation could throw people off track. My name is Vincent, Vincent Valitius." "My name is Tremenis Einthward, nice to know you, sir Valitius, so much knowledge in the young age. Do you want to be Scholar sir Valitius?"
Most of the modern magic that used today by the magician, originally derived from the ancient magic of God or Divine being. However due to tremendous requirement to use ancient magic, mortal never been able to fully utilize it. Scholar were the first line of magical profession. They tested the ancient magic thoroughly and created Modern Magic that require less amount of magic to be used. Even though the most modern magic were far less powerful than the ancient magic, scholar able to create most cost-effective mana/magic ratio than the ancient magic user ever dreamed of. It has been said that if scholar work to be applied in the ancient magic, total destruction will surely occur. Nowadays, scholar work mostly involved in creating and improving new magic in form of research. Scholar favour efficiency above else and viewing evocation branch with reluctance.

[p=left]"Magnificent! Now, sir Valitius, all magician guild''s scholar have unlimited access to any books that owned by the guild, we will also provide your private laboratory if you like." "Thank you Sir Einthward. Here, the scrolls I promised." "Lesser Teleport, Mirage, Sound Deviation, Greater Summon Familiar, Healing Hand, Eye from Above, amazing... Oh my! Greater Fire Storm, and Object Transmutation! Poison Cloud, Entangle, Suggestion, Binding of Blood, Hex of Silence, Blinding Light. My, my." "You''re so amazing sir Valitius, oh my, here 5000 golds, like I promised." "Thank you." "If I may ask do you have plan for the rest of the day?" "Ah, yes, I need to open my stall in the market.." "What stall?" "You''ll see sir, you''ll see."[/p][p=center]****[/p][p=left]"Step right up and test your Luck!! Yes come here sir, and you too mam! Here one chance only, only for THREE DAYS, you''ll be able to enjoy the service of the Magical Mystique!" shout Vin booming toward his potential customer. With the money he received from Sir Einthward, he managed to secure stall in most bustling place in Serabough market, and of course he don''t forget to make himself seems more mysterious, he bought the equipment from the nearby seamstress. The effect were so-so, but the charm it possess were second to none. Tipped White-Wizard hat with blue ribbon lining on the base, regal white wizard robe with complex insignia design on the shoulder patch, and of course the long wooden staff with aquamarine gem rested in the top. "Crazy kid." said some passerby. "But his equip seems nice, maybe he really selling something unique." said his friend "Do you think it really worth it?" "Probably, nothing to lose if we just ask him." "Excuse me, what actually you''re selling? I don''t seems to see any wares here." said the long-haired woman who seems to be Tyr Priestess. "You''re right Mam! I don''t sell any items! I sell certain service!" "Eh, what kind of service?" asked the priestess again, curious onlooker now begin to gather. "You see, when you increase your Level or when you train yourself, your stats will increase right?" "That''s right." answer the woman, dumbfounded. "But sometimes the increase of the stats it''s not to your liking! For example tank-type knight gained agility, priest gain stamina, and rogues gained intelligence! Don''t you think the knight will be more benefited if vitality is the one is increased? And the magician got the intelligence?" "Of course. But we can''t control that. When you train your body strength increased. Reading books increase intelligence, you can''t change that!" "Of course not! But I could change the aftermath! You see Dearest Customers, What I offer you here is called status gamble." "Status Gamble what''s that?" asked the obviously-warrior type man in the crowd. "I could exchange your status to another type of status!" "That''s impossible!" "It''s not! But, it''s called gamble because you must determine three of status that you designed as targeted status. For example, you want vitality, and have lots of spare wisdom. You could gamble, let''s say 15 wisdom! But, you have to provide another target status beside vitality, for example strength, and agility. After the gamble finished, for example you could get, 4 vitality, 10 strength, and 1 agility, you couldn''t set the number of amount each status get, and more status you gamble, the more targeted status you should have. And I only could work with basic status that could be raised normally via increasing level, means no honor, no faith, no endurance and such." "I don''t believe it!" said another person in crowd "Well, how about this, the first customer get free pass! Who want to try?" Silence creep in. No one want to gamble their status, the kid here could be a charlatan. "I will try." said the previous Tyr Priestess. "Oh really miss?" "Yes, I have excessive strength, mainly from my newbie days beating scarecrow *cough*, but priestess never needed in the front line, we only heal and buff. But some wisdom or intelligence would be nice." "Okay miss, but remember don''t bet all the strength! Leave it minimum 10 for everyday use. Too little strength and you can''t even lift your leg." "Oh okay, I''d love to gamble 25 strength." "25 required four target stats miss." "Umm, let see, wisdom, Intelligence, that''s for sure, uhh, vitality would be nice, and agility in case I must flee, he he." "Okay and your name?" "Evero." "Very well Evero, now I must recite the last question, do you want to gamble, 25 of your strength, for the possible increase in intelligence, wisdom, vitality, and agility?" "Yes."[/p]
You have lost 25 of your strength. Please wait while the spellcaster pray to the Lady of Fortune
[p=left]"Release the seal." whisper Vin to the scroll, he secretly hold inside his robe. "Lesser wind of the Northen Tribe, gather here as follow. Wailing sound of everwolf will christening the land with your luck." "The greatest took comprehension, made the most careful step, and granting order in every creation." "But the truth lies within chance, and chance lies within luck." "Wheel, goes around and comes around, up and down, right and left." "In front of you there is a dice thrower, a blackjack seeker, and a shooter of the moon." "Gambling their life essence; for better, for worse, for the unknown." "Within your ever wisdom. Within your ever grace." "Shall the truth open, beyond the random chance!"[/p]
The Gamble were succeed! You received 5 Intelligence, 8 Wisdom, 10 Vitality, and 2 Agility in exchange of your 25 strength
[p=left]"Wow it''s really work! Too bad I only get five int and more vitality, but it''s still amazing!" said the priestess in exclamation. "Really? How much stats do you get, sister?" ask another priest from the crowd. "I got 5 intelligence, 8 wisdom, 10 vitality, and 2 agility. That''s amazing right? I means, now I could beat scarecrow but raised intelligence instead." "Wow." said the another priest. "ME ME! Do me next Mr. Magician!!" shout a red haired swordwoman from the front line. "No, I''m first! Do me next!" said the all-black male. "Please everyone, from a simple line, you''re an adult, right? Everyone will get their chance." "Ehehe, sorry." "Ah, Mr. Magician, how much do you charge?" ask the previous red haired swordwoman. "Not too much, 10 silvers per level. And I need you to show me your level. Non-disclosure of course." "What? That''s so expensive!" "Yes, because it''s scale with level, 10 strength of Level 100 is very different from 10 strength of level 1." "Aww, I don''t bring that much, now." "It''s okay, you could just use the second payment method." "What''s that?" "Well, you could simply gave the lowest target status from gamble to me." "Eh?" "Means, if you get for example 5 strength, 2 agility, 3 intelligence, and 4 wisdom. I''ll take the agility, which is the lowest stat, for myself." "Oh.." "And remember one person could only do one gamble per day. Its...harmful to tempt Lady of Fortune too much." "Now do you want to proceed?" "Ah, yes, I think I''ll go with that stat payment." "Okay, and your gambling stat is?" "Luck, 30 Lucks." "Are you sure you have left enough luck? Too few luck and you''ll find misfortune never left you. Ah and you have four target status." "Right, right, I''m sure. My target status are strength, agility, dexterity, vitality." "And your name is?" "Gladys." "Very well Gladys, now I must recite the final confirmation, do you want to gamble, 30 of your lucks, for the possible increase in strength, agility, dexterity, and vitality. ALSO you choice to pay with the lowest possible stats?" "Yes."[/p]
You have lost 30 of your strength. Please wait while the spellcaster pray to the Lady of Fortune
[p=left]"Release the seal." whisper Vin to the scroll again.
You received 9 Strength, 7 Dexterity, 7 Vitality, and 7 Agility in exchange of your 30 luck
Due to choice of second payment method, the wisdom, vitality and agility increase were given to the spellcaster
[p=left]"What? You trick me you took 21 stats!" "No I don''t trick you miss, as I said before I''d took the lowest stats, it just coincidence that dex, vit, and agi score the same." "What! That''s crazy, give me my stat back!" "I''m very sorry miss, it could not be undone, Need I to remind you that you''re the one who choose second payment method?" "Buts, buts.." "NEXT!!" First Chapter Previous Chapter Next Chapter[/p] Chapter 6: Twisting the Canon I should have known... Vincent look at the line in front of him, dejectedly. There''re least five hundred players queuing for his service. It seems to him there were too many people that having stat-based trouble. Most of them were combat profession; magician, archer, and warrior class took up majority of the crowds, not surprisingly most of them ask to convert their dump stats that already so dumped, to what they deem more useful stats. How many people want to be glass cannon here?!, cursed Vincent silently. Focusing one stat, often bring harm more than good. He didn''t particularly mind, though. It''s their decision and if I could reap profit from it, why not? But serving five hundred people and counting, were not something you''re really really looking forward to. Forcing the smile he greet his second customer. "Welcome, I assume you already familiar with the rule, miss?" said Vincent tried to be professional. "Y-yes!! I''ll pay with money! The second payment method is just too harsh!!" reply the lady, she wore ground-length, white robe. It seems she was magician or some sort. "Please show your level to me, don''t worry, your level will be a confidential information, and if you were not comfortable showing your level, you could always say show level instead show status window." "Oh, okay, Show Level to the Mr.Wizard!"

"That would be 16 gold and 72 silver, please." said Vincent silently calculating in his head. "Eh? I thought the price is 10 silvers per level? It should be 15 gold and 20 silver!" exclaim Edna. "No miss Edna, for every customer I served, the price increased by 1 silver per level, regardless payment method." "What?!" "You''re my second customer, therefore the service''s price are 11 silver per level. You could always opt the second method, though." "Lady of Fortune favor those who try hard in their endeavor. Like queuing in the front line." "Ah, can''t be helped. At least the difference still it''s not too expensive. Here Mr. Wizard." "Thank you." "I will gamble 50 of my Agility. My target stat are Intelligence, Wisdom, Vitality, and Dexterity." "Please wait."
You have lost 50 of your Agility. Please wait while the spellcaster pray to the Lady of Fortune
. Release the Seal, whisper Vin to his scroll.
The Gamble were succeed! You received 32 Intelligence, 18 Wisdom, 0 Vitality and 0 Dexterity!
"Waw! Most of the stat going to intelligence, like I wanted!" "Ah yes, it seems Miss Edna were really lucky, perhaps you have substantial amount of luck, miss?" "Oh, it''s not too much." "When asking too the Lady of Fortune, it helps if you show respect to her, and high amount of luck is sign of respect." "Oh, I don''t know luck were so useful, thanks Mr. Wizard."said Edna, leaving. "NEXT!" [p=center]****[/p] His 127th customer tried to "reduced" his level by one hundred. The 131st cursing him loudly (with lots and lots of saliva as added bonus). The 207th lost throwing 10 minutes tantrum after she lost half of her stat due to second payment method. The 342nd tried to postpone the payment by making the cliche "I swear I''ll pay tomorrow" promise that no one would believe. And the last customer grudgingly gave him her last silver while spouting her ''back in my days-kid these days'' non sequitur. But of course Vincent had to smile! That''s one of the important rule when you work in service industry! Smile! No matter how ridiculous your customer demand was, you have to smile! Even if the only "solid" argument of your customer were a full-blown ad hominem. You MUST smile. That''s how keep the more civilized customer loyal. After all those illegible miscreant would stop their bark after you shove some coupon to them (it''s going to expire tomorrow anyway). Vincent sigh inwardly, finally. Finished. His little endeavor had managed to gather about 11,000 golds. He, perhaps were the richest level 1 in town. Not to mentioned... Show Status Window!

His status increase significantly! Thanks to his brilliant plan by increasing the price gradually, so the customer who couldn''t paid, chose the second method of payment and BAM! Instant Stat. Clang, clang, clang.. Ah, the fifteenth bell. Evening, already. Vincent frowned, his scroll of Lady Luck had disintegrated an hour ago. He couldn''t walk to sir Piri''s lab, it''s simply too far, night will arrived soon and his teleport scroll were given to the Chancellor. After careful consideration, he decided to spend the night in the Magician Tower. The tower were only five blocks away and they provide research room for him in there anyway. So he could rest there free of charge. Suddenly his eyes caught a movement.Suspicious Movement. Thief?! Wait it''s not that. He could count at least five people already observing him. They seems desperately trying to look inconspicuous, but seriously? Wearing tattered cloak and leaning their back at the wall was definitely pathetic. It''s like screaming "I''M SO SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE, LOOK AT ME AND MY MYSTERIOUS CLOAK!" At least they still have common sense to stay put. It''s a market after all, no one want to attract attention of the crowd. "What to do, what to do.... Ah let''s try this." "Blessed by the Hand of Frigg herself, Thy lavished the world with consolation. With protection." "Thy mother, blessing from thee were the utmost. Upon the shield-bearer Paladin as my witness. I exerting my Arcane to reach your Divine. Grant this mortal mercy upon the fate that he destined to be." "Under your purview, I prayed. Ward!" The luminous light of setting sun slowly ripening apart to rainbow light. The light encircle themselves one by one, creating full circle rainbow; a halo that encompass the whole market area. After while the halo declined in size and placed conveniently around my head.
You have created Ward!
Ward were the advance from barrier, it could repel most of the thing it specified to. Granting the caster near complete protection
Please specify the ward.
"Deepest gratitude for answering my prayer Lady Hlin, I humbly asked thee for Ward against bad intention." Like poem, magic were play of words. Beside the mana, word play important role in magic spell. The more eloquent your incantation were. Chance the spell will grant better result. Especially when you invoke the power of God or Demon. Words were indeed the key.
[p=center]Ward against Bad Intention![/p] [p=left]The ward would repel bad intention that harbored toward you. Any individual that try to harm you will found the fate were against them. Constant misfortune and failure were guaranteed to happen to those who not know their place. Due to the blessing of Hlin, the Ward possess divine property. Effect: -250 Luck to people who wanted to harm you Restriction: Atrocities may not be committed when using the ward, less the effect will disappear and the user would face serious repercussion.[/p]
The crowd were aghast. The rainbow halo indeed were very flashy. Some of them tried to approach Vincent due to curiosity, but the latter already ran away. Slipping himself to the alley. Relieved Vincent began to walk again. The tower only four blocks away. Suddenly. The "Thiefs" from before had already encircled Vincent. Two of them were barbarian with high-school delinquent wannabe attire. The other were all-brown thief, assassin, and a mage. One of the barbarian lunged his sword at him. However, instead of slashing Vincent, he tripped by a small pebble and fall flat to the ground. And even more unfortunate to him, his sword somehow flied to the air and precisely hit him on the chest. He dead. Vincent tried his best to stifle his laugh. Using all his concentration, he casually walked over the barbarian dead body and continue to walk to tower as if nothing happened. The rest of the group look surprised, but after a second they got back to his sense and ran after Vincent. The assassin tried to pierced the katar to him,and... he hit the thief instead. The second barbarian using his sword-skill to Vincent, .....he hit the assassin instead. They dead. The mage fell to his knee. And the second barbarian tripped on the same pebbles again. They both dead. That evening a cackled Laugh could be heard across the whole Serabough [p=center]****[/p] Using his Vincent-Fouvilious External Mana Harnessing Formulae, Vincent created lots and lots of scroll. Being Scholar, he able to reconstitute many ancient magic. The last one were Lady Luck Charm that he use to gamble the player stats. However, scroll were impractical, he literally had to hid the scroll under his robe or risk to be found out. Luckily, his customer seems to be more focused on whether they''d gained good stats or not. How about enchanting? If he could apply the same concept to ring or bracelet, then the problem would be solved. However enchanting were rather expensive. Gem cost a leg. And certainly he could only put one spell per magical item. Then again, there''s nothing to lose if he tried. But there are world difference between scribing scrolls and cutting accessory. The latter required meticulous workmanship of precision. Since his formula need the magic spell transcribed into the item. Engraving couldn''t be avoided. Firstly, he thought of asking Jeweler for service. However the fee that they charge were exorbitant. 100 golds per item? It''s simply too much. And they could only carve crude symbol at the bracelet. He need finesse. Perfection. There were no room for mistake in magic. Therefore, Vincent decided to only purchase rings and bracelets that have no status granting power. He purchase fifty of them for 12,000 golds. So much for hard work... Next, he tried to engrave the magic himself. But the result were scratches and reduction of durability. Then, he asked Fou to tried. The result were worse mishap, it seems imp didn''t possess any artistic ability. [p=center]****[/p] The next day, when he just wanted to open his stall, he observed rather weird peculiarity. The market were devoid of people. Only the vendor stayed, and even that they seems a bit restless. "Uncle, where is everyone?" ask Vincent to the Grocery vendor beside him. "Don''t you know, Vin? People were crowding the Freya Church. The Benefactor of Church were returning from the battle against horde of undead monsters. I don''t really get it. He beat lich or some sort." "Who?" "His name were... We- I don''t really know. Something about plant." "Weed?" "Ah yes, that''s right." "Oh. It''s weed. I think I''ve heard him. He''s called God of War, I think." "Yes, that''s true. I heard he fought bone dragon, and he has Ice Dragon under his command." "Houu, but I''m looking for engraver though, or reasonable jeweler." "But Weed is sculptor." "I thought he''s God of War?" "And he''s also sculptor, the best of the continent, he made the King tomb, and that Sphinx-thing that the freedman love to visit." "But..." "Hard to believe right? But that''s true! Class is not everything, Vin. Hardwork would open the path. Any path." "Oh, my.. In that case.. Sorry Uncle, talk to you Later!" "Eh, wha--" "TELEPORT!" [p=center]****[/p] BAAM!! "Oh my, teleport to sacred area really difficult. If not for the ward, I could ended up inside a wall... or worse." complaint Vincent. Due to Weed extreme popularity, Users and NPC were flocking in front of the Freya''s Church gate. The guard try their best to fend them off. One hundred trained guards of Freya could easily block the push from the crowds. However, if magic were used, the balance would tipped quickly. Fortunately, using evocation magic to Church Guard were frowned, the one who did it would gain high notoriety and no one want that. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it. However... "Rain of Feather!" "Tickling Dust!" "Pepper spray!" Prank-Magic! The magician use loopholes and using harmless magic. So the guard wouldn''t be harmed, but distracted enough (aka sneezing and tickled) to lose their foothold. This is dangerous Thought Vin, he already teleport inside the gate, but it''d be a problem if crowds start flocking in. "Let me help you, sir Guard." "Uh, who are you? HAHAHAHAHA, it''s TICKLED! !!" Vincent smiled. "Someone who want to help." "Alrigh-ACHOOI! Alright, please help us. ACHOO!!" "First there is Mana, and from it''s lifeblood the Magic were born." "Magic create Presence, and Presence alter reality." "I''m here standing on the scale of construction and deconstruction." "Retrieved what had been lost, Return what had been changed, and Reclaim what had been done..." "The one that had changes! Return to your to form! And relieve us from your presence! Dispel!!!" In instant, all the magicians spell in area were vanished. Thanks to Magic Manipulation Vincent could expand the Dispel area at cost of more mana. The guard look surprised, but they quickly snapped out of it and resume their duty. Grumbling could be heard from the crowd who previously thought they had managed to shake off the guard. "What''s happened?" asked a blue-haired warrior as he pushing the guard along with crowd. "That elf kid over there remove the spell!" answered one of the magician. "Then just cast it, again!" replied the warrior. "Spell have cooldown, you twit! It''s Five minutes.." "No matter. My spell will be ready in moment.." answered Chie. Even though she said that, she actually very surprised. Dispel were high level magic, it required five circle to cast it. For the elf could cast dispel, it means he must be some high level wizard, she thought. She raised her staves and began chanting spell. Pepper Spray were one of her old favorite, any monster that possess even the tiniest nostril would sneeze uncontrollably when subjected to pepper spray. Moreover, the pepper spray would reduce their vision too. Thanks to it, she able to solo goblin and kobold by herself. "Pepp-" "...and protect us from the low hanging-fruit of troubling day. Air Dissonance!" shout the elf again.
You''re under effect of Air dissonance. Mana requirement increase by twenty three fold. Skill Failure chance baseline set at 72%
"-er spray!" BAAM "Aaah!! " Chie were taken aback. Mana reflux . The worst enemy of every magician, taking all but 50 of her health and leave her mana completely drained. That elf really amazing, she thought, gulping her emergency minor health potion. Looking around she observed the other magician suffer the same fate, Evio even got himself killed from the reflux. "...I can''t use my skill!" "What the hell happened?" The melee class on the front shouted their frustration. Of course! Chie screamed in her mind. The mana requirement increase by twenty three fold you dimwit! I spent ALL of my mana on ONE pepper spray. How do you expect, class with mana less than five hundred could cast skill? Chie sighed, waving her hand to her friends, she sign them to leave Church of Freya gates. [p=center]****[/p] After a while the crowd start dispersing, some of the magician even hurried themselves to leaves the church. No one likes the effect of Air Dissonance. But still, most of them still flocking the area around church''s vicinity. Thankfully no more people tried to break in anymore. "Thank you child, if not for you, they should have managed to come in." said one of the guard. "We''re really thankful to our benefactor, but it seems the freedman also very ...fond of him, it''s not the first time the crowd tried to barge in like that!" chided his friend. "And it wouldn''t be the last..." "Last time, the paladin were here, so it''s kinda okay. But now all of them were in relief duty at North." said the first guard sighing. "It''s my pleasure sir, to help the esteemed guard of Freya''s Church is an honor." said Vincent. "What a nice re--" "How the situation?" asked a priestess suddenly. The priestess wore a ground-length red robe with golden fur lining. Her yellowish white muffler transcribed symbol of Freya; diagonal-like cross with alternating filled circle at the center. Worried look could be seen at her hurried pace to the guard. "Everything under control Priestess Lillian. Thanks to the child over here, um.. sorry child what''s your name?" "Vincent, sir guard." "Oh vin! It''s that you?" said the priestess. "Miss Lillian!" replied Vin "I told you to not calling miss." she humphed. "Sorry... but! [but! You''re priestess! Priestess should always use honorific! It command respect! Especially in public." "That''s true...well, only in public, right?" "Yes.." "Why''re you here by the way? And look at your new attire, so elegant! You must be a great magician, now!" "Well, no, not really..." "Don''t sell yourself short, kiddo! I saw what you did back there, he removing all the magic of all magician and disable them from casting anymore spell!" said a bearded tough-looking guard to Vincent. His chiseled stature command respect. Vincent could feel the veteran aura emitted from the man, especially if you''re looking to his prevalent scar across his face. "Uncle Mer! You''re back!" said Lillian. "Ah, Lilli! You''re priestess now! I''m so proud!" said Mer booming. "Yes uncle! When you''re back?" "Just got back here, it seems my training weren''t enough eh, Rio?" "N-no sir, we''re j-just overwhelmed" replied the first guard, shuddered with that word implication. "Hoooo.. overwhelmed.. Well, well. Next week I finally had a free time, your platoon need a retrain, Ri!" "Y-yes sir..." "Ah by the way, what''re you doing here kid?" "Umm.... I want to meet sir Weed." "Typical! But how do you get here, did you managed to slip through the guard?" said Mer, glancing to Rio. "No, I teleported here, sir." "But the church were hallowed!!How Vin?" asked Lillian in disbelief. "Well... the protection on the yard were not as powerful compared in the inside, and there''s a bit distortion around the corner where the spell neutralizing each other, it was small, but possible." "Eeh? That''s unbelie--" "Yes, it is Priestess Lillian." said a voice. It was from a wizened priest, he wear the same cloth as Priestess Lillian, with addition of white streaked ermine cape and towering hat. "High Priest!" Priestess Lillian gasped, she hurried herself to curt, Mer and the guard follow suit, and bow to the high priest. "Raise yourself, Priestess, and you''re to Captain. No great servant of Freya should ever bow before me." "Yes High Priest." answered Mer. "It was a fact that the protection in the church yard were negligible compared to the inside and I somehow still remembered Vienn earful complainhow she couldn''t fixed those distortion completely. But, I shrugged it off cause the gap were very small and it would be tremendously difficult to enter. However certain someone just prove me wrong." said the High Priest smiling "Elp!" said Vincent, fidgeting. "May I inquire your name, child?" asked the High Priest again. Vincent sigh again, he didn''t want this to happen. He just hoped he could meet Weed while he leaving the gate. But it seems the High Priest had taken interest in him, and considering Church of Freya Position he couldn''t simply shrugged him off. Well, fineeee. "My name is Vincent Valitius, the Scholar of First Magician Tower of Serabough, your Eminence. I am very sorry at the trouble that I had caused, but I hope to meet the Church of Freya''s benefactor. His esteemed expertise with the art of engraving were spread far and beyond, and I required his expertise in my studies. I were informed that due to his fame, crowd would follow him around all day. Therefore I decide to wait him in front of the church, once again, I''m very sorry your Eminence."

"I see, we''re very honored to welcome the Scholar of Serabough. Such accomplishment in the young age must be proof of hardwork and excellence. We''re very thankful to your help to our guard, we''re peace loving church and we know the crowds mean no harm, but sometimes order must be held."
Thankful to your help, High Priest of Freya, Grant you 12 contribution point. Contribution point could be redeemed in Church of Freya for item or service.
"I pray the benefactor would accept your request, he just visiting the King and returning the Royal Guard to their post. I believe he will arrive shortly, ah! there he is." exclaim the High Priest. "Sir Weed, come here a moment please." "Yes High Priest, how could I help you?" "This gentleman over here inquire your help with his studies, he was the Scholar of First Magician Tower of Serabough." Weed frowned, from his attire, he could see that the child were player. He already got the quest from the High Priest to restore the honor of Nifleheim Empire. Originally, he planned to sell his service again in the market before dropping his japtem to Mapan. But, he couldn''t afford to look bad in front of the high priest. Troublesome Indeed. "Oh, how could I help you, sir..." "Vincent, sir Weed. I require your expertise in engraving, could you help me?" Well, if it''s just couple of statue, he wouldn''t really mind. But he should check, just be sure. "I''m flattered sir Vincent, what should I sculpt?" "Here, sir Weed." said Vincent handing a gold bracelet to Weed. Weed examined it, he couldn''t identify it in front of High Priest. But he could see that bracelet were very expensive. Three hundred gold, minimum, Weed thought. "Could you engrave this symbol to the bracelet sir Weed? Originally I want to ask the town jeweler, but her carving were rather... imprecise.. " said Vincent handing a scroll. "Just give me a second." said Weed, pulling his zahab knife and began copying the scroll. "Amazing sir Weed, it''s perfect! Now please do the same with the rest of the accessory. Ah and please use only one kind of scroll for each accessory." said Vincent handing one hundred accessories like necklace, bracelet, ring, wristband, and so on. It is so much. Weed frowned. "That were magnificent sir Weed, you''re an amazing engraver, Church of Freya were honored to be your benefactor." said High Priest. "Thank you, High Priest." "Ah yes. yes. This talk tire me, come in Captain I''d love to hear about your stories. Excuse us, sir Weed, sir Vincent." "Yes your Eminence, thank you for your help." "Thank you High Priest, hope you rest well." [p=center]****[/p] "Now sir Vincent, are you... freedman?" said Weed while we walk toward my stall. "Ah yes of course! I''m sorry I didn''t tell you before." "Well it''s okay, but 100 accessories seems a bit too much for little help, don''t you think?" "Ah!! How could I forgot! Sorry!! Here sir Weed, I don''t have many gold left. But I''m very certain this is enough for compensation." said Vincent handing a scroll. "Thank you.. Vincent, please drop the sir, it''s uncomfortable. Do you mind if I identify this?" "No Weed, be my guest, that''s the best scroll I''ve ever created." "Identify.Identify.Identify.Identify"
Identification Succeed

"I ACCEPT!!" First Chapter Previous Chapter Chapter 7: Adventure Time! :hi: this is LikoPilio again! Thank''s for your support! My mid term finally over and I can release the chapter with more fixed schedule. However, don''t hope too much!! I still have lots of coursework and Labwork that need to bee done! Please rate and review!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The engraving process were long and precarious. Part of it because the minuscule detail that had to be carved. The another part due to Weed constant banter, aiming to utilize me to the fullest, realizing He was helping me creating magic item. (Well... a hundred magic items) He keep asking me what does certain scroll do, why I need my help, what exactly I''m doing and so forth. Unfortunately, this situation exacerbated because Fou were extracting mana from the engraved accessories beside him. Therefore, it was natural to him to inquire the questions. Outright lie of course not an option. Relationship with other player in Royal Road were always fragile. Afterall, we were selfish bunch of people who only cared about our own interest. Unless, you were friend or family from the real life, it was very difficult to maintain relation within Royal Road, in the world where every person were a potential thief and betrayer that would face no repercussion. NPC were the only party who gifted with the privilege of trust. To me Weed seems not to be outright decadent, but he also didn''t deserve to be lavished as a benevolent. He seems to be a person who would keep his promise straight and his reputation decent, however word and promise were prevalent of loopholes, and loopholes were where the people jab their fangs and suck the other dried, ethically. The action itself not malevolent, nor punishable by law. It simply a competition; free market system where every party tried to get their stubby little finger at most of the coin that thrown on the table. Therefore the appropriate behavior were answering his question with a bit of truth and lots and lots blurring powder. "Vincent, is this magic scroll?" "No." First rule, never answered what hadn''t been asked. "But I thought you were able to create magic scroll?" "That''s right. But what you held were only my note to be engraved. It requires lot of magic to create a functioning Advanced magical scroll." Second rule, technically right answer with uncorrelated sentences, That''s true I''m able to create magic scroll. It also true magical scroll require lot of magic. Both of the statement were correct, but not necessarily inclusive. "I see, but the scroll you gave me were created by you, right?" "That is true." "It seems to be advanced magic for me." Of course if someone were able to read between the line Weed his question were :"You''re able to create advanced magical scroll right?" "Advanced magic were relative term. If one high level magician create 1000 damage Frost bolt, five mid level magician with 200 frost bolt damage each create an equal outcome to the high level magician. The mentioned scroll were created by the joint venture of many magician, wizard, and scholar alike. The creation required one month to complete and relentless devotion of whom involved. It only by chance I able to obtain this scroll." Third rule, shifting responsibility. The scroll of course created by me and Fou, but there are also people whom writing the books which help me create my theory and there are people who help the people who creating the book, there are also sir Piri, Chancellor, their family and friend who help them and raise them to what they ought to be right now. So by mathematical induction, hundred thousand, if not million, people were involved in creating this scroll, and since some of them were magician, wizard, and scholar, the statement were essentially correct. But the way I answered his question gave an illusion that the scroll I gave him were highly intricated magic scroll and I just a measly apprentice who got lucky. Additionally, the timeline to create the scroll were actually like one day top, but by mentioning the length of time since my reading and the creation of the scroll (which were technically right to be included in the timeline), it gave additional illusion that the scroll were hard to obtain and it would be impossible for me to create it alone. Not to mention since I answered all his question, he didn''t have any justified cause to ask me further. To ask me how to create the scroll or why there were imp in my lab were terribly rude. His question end here. [p=center]****[/p] In the end Weed and me seems to be reaching status quo. He stopped asking me question, and continue to sculpt the magic symbol on the accessories. However in order to appease him (I might still need him for future partnership!), I asked him to made small figurines of many monster from rabbit, fox, wolf, orc, kobold, goblin, and so forth. In total there are about two hundred kind of figurines. I told him I''d require it as my model in my further studies to create "living golem". He nodded and we agreed in amount of 567 gold coins. After that, we add each other to friendlist and bid simple farewell. Then I began five days non-stop montage to manufacture all the magic accessories. I cast stamina recovering magic every time Fou drop dead from exhaustion. He complained that mana and stamina exhaustion were two different thing. I just giggled and remind him that I were demanding. In the end I wore fifty rings (which I hid under a black glove and layer it again under another white glove), Five necklaces, Two gauntlet, and 10 bracelet. The rest of the ring and bracelet were studded in my staff. Because I were worried I might lost it. I cast ward at it over and over until it become permanent. Next, I said goodbye to the Chancellor and Sir Piri, the Chancellor were reluctant to let me leave, but agreed when I told him that we still could communicate to each other through communication magic. On the other hand sir Piri look beamed and proud when I met him. Some of the reason were due to he took pride in generating town best scholar (and won 1000 gold bet with his pal), and another reason because I gave him ring of flight and necklace of telekinetic which eased him to arranged the book in library. [p=center]****[/p] "Finally, first month were up, Fou!" "Yeah, yeah. so when you''re releasing me?" "Hmmm.. Let see. Well, Someday in the future...Exact date not to be determined yet!" "Bah! So what''s the plan now?" "Well, I''m thinking about adventuring a bit, walking from town to town, seeing new things! Isn''t that great?!" "Not bad, anything beside that cooped up lab." "Hahaha, and I already bought enough supply! Water and Food could be created by magic, Shelter too! And of course I already stock lots of blood enough for a lifetime, just for you Fou!" "Whatever..." "Now, put an illusion Fou, No offense but having imp beside you were worst attention grabber ever." "Fine, what should I changed to?" "Since you were small and should be able to fly, how about owl? Owl looks magiciany!" "Right, right.. Illusion!" said Fou change into owl. "That''s great!" said Vin also changing to beginner clothes. "Why are you change to those rag? I thought you bought nicer clothes." "Duh! I''m beginner Fou! Well, rich beginner, but beginner nonetheless. Us freedman, have tendency to be.. jealous of each other and like you being imp, flaunting good armor were sure way to grab their undivided attention. Additionally in our other world we have means to communicate to another person in the whole world! Flaunting armor as newbie basically screaming LOOKS PEOPLE I HAVE MONEY, PLEASE ROB ME! Last time I were lucky caused I realized it and cast Ward. But not all people have bad intention, some people were just curious. And it would be troublesome!" Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more. "You don''t need to give me the full lecture! I understand! But how about your dangling trinket?" "Ring and bracelet below glove, necklace under clothes, my staff in the inventory." "Hmm, so when we go to this adventure?" "Now!" [p=center]****[/p] "Why those beginner killing the rabbits?" said Vincent shocked observed hundred group of newbies ganged up on rabbits. The rabbits itself seems more agile and able to bite back, but because one rabbit ganged up by roughly three newbies, the rabbit were cornered and defeated. "Hah? I thought that''s what you freedman called ''leveling'' and to gain ''experience''?" "But isn''t that... wrong? I meant, if it''s for survival like eating fish to satisfy hunger and continue to live, that''s fine, that''s how every living being life right? Or defending yourself when attacked also justified. Rabbit were peaceful animal! If it like kobold who attacking your village, that''s fine! But, relentless killing for the fun of it? Isn''t that wrong?" "Well, as what they say, if you want to level up, you must beat it out!" "Yeah it seems, it isn''t Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, but ,are these other, otherenough that I can do unto them what I don''t want done unto me?" "So...we''re not killing those critters?" "Of course Not! They don''t do anything wrong! If this were how the system went, well I won''t stand it! Come on Fou, let''s go behind those tree." "What are you planning?" "There are hundred of ways to maintain peace, I shall enforce one of it." "Interesting.." "Draw this circle in the ground, One meter in diameter. Use salt, sand, silver dust, and morning glow''s extract, 2 : 1 : 2 : 0.01 ratio " "Fine, master.." said Fou began to mixing the the ingredients, after Fou continuous assistance in Vincent experiment, he also got alchemy skill, which Vincent appreciate to the fullest. "Done." Birth decided with dice, and Alignment were tossed to the born as inheritance. "But beyond his path were redemption, beyond her path were sanctification. I here stand here as the witness of penance for the Sin that had never been done." "Within my sacrifice, please accept this grain of justice to grant this child protection. To bless the luck of the most unfortunate." "Grant him mercy. Grant her salvation. For he who condemned to be sin. Were she who born within!" "For he evil by nature! For she good by choice! Protection From Good!" A shining yellowish light enveloping Fou creating some divine-like aura that surround him.
[p=center]Protection From Good![/p] [p=left]Most of the evil creature were evil by nature. They''re born as demon, succubi, goblin, or even imp. Evil were a fickle thing, condemnation of the Good faction were similar to rich blaming child who born in the poor family. To survive their environment the creature were forced to be Evil, it is very similar to how orphan were forced to steal bread in slum. However there are small group of "evil creature" whom trying to be good. And shouldn''t we welcome them? Who already suffered the most as the unlucky? Effect: Nullified any Holy or Light based damage from the evil creature. Duration: 2 hour and 45 minutes[/p]
"What. Is. This?!" "This ritual could emanate some holy power, Better safe than sorry." "But this effect were great! My friend down there would pay you great amount to have this kind of spell Vin!" "Well, that''s true, but I don''t want it to be misused. Undead horde who immune to holy? No thanks..." "Suit yourself, as long you''re keep casting it to me! I''m okay!" "Now please keep some distance, Fou, and notify me if someone comes here, use illusion to distract them, if you could," said Vin, he slowly put the rabbit shaped figurine he got from Weed to the center of the circle "From one to many, From small to big. Change the size of this Tiny to that Gigantic! Enlarge!" "Luckily, the figurine made of stone, so I don''t need to convert it to metal. If he sculpt it using wood, the durability would far much less than stone." "Now, it''s time." "Some people wonder, what is right, what is wrong, what is the meaning, and what wait in the end." "But we''re know something were out there. The first being. The first creator. The promised land. And The promised condemnation" "We''re just compound of dust who got lucky. To blessed with faculty. To think. To be sentient. To be sapient." "There are whom who chose to patronize the strong, because when their believer were dominant, their power grow exorbitant." "But there are whom who born with misfortune, to be scared within their life, if every other day were the day of their hanging." "I am standing here, presenting you the case, O the great Mother of Creation. Odin may be the one who cut Ymir''s heart and gave it life to every mortal." "But it through your blessing and within your power that this Midgard allowed to flourished." "My arcane were limited, and I just a humble mortal in your Presence." "But I asking for thee, the change the fortune of those born with misfortune, to tipped the scale to balance." "For what I asked is no more than defense of the bystander." "Please grant protection to your people. The Rabbits. We all were the children of yours, whom the every one deserved to be doted within your care." "For you Mother Yggdrasil, the utmost sanctified, in the name of Holy Seer, I prayed." A great shining white light one meter wide fell down like a heavy rain from the sky above. It enveloped the enlarged rabbit statue with white glowing aura that were only could be described as divine. Vincent could heard a faint whisper, the voice were distant, but warmth could be felt from it. "It shall be done."

That afternoon, there are lots of newbie who suddenly got struck by lightning and died on the spot. Chapter 8: Hanging a Lampshade Hello every one, I''m terribly sorry, it seems my draft showed up in the update list. Don''t know why it happened... If I remember correctly, I chose to save the draft, not post it.. :shy: Anyway, here the latest chapter, please rate and review

Royal Road forum were in uproar. -Listen guys, I got hit by Lightning when hunting the rabbit! -You too? My friends also told me that she hit too! She died in instant! -Same for me! Why this is happening?? -Dunno event maybe? -No way! Event of "Killing Newbie with Pack of Lightning"?, please.. -This is insane! I need those rabbit pelt for Merchant Job Change Quest! -I heard the price of rabbit pelt now 25 silvers a piece. -No!!!! I need 100 of those to change job! -Guys, guys! Same thing now happened at the fox and wolf field!! -Hit by lightning too? -Not just lightning! Earthquake and Fire pillar also keep hitting us somehow... -That''s ridiculous! -Ah hello friends, I apologize to interrupt, but neither me or my friend experience such misfortune, we just finished hunt the rabbit now. Perhaps I could help, where do you people start ? -Eh? Serabough City, Rosenheim Kingdom -Serabough City. -Same! -Me too. -So it seems the anomaly only happen at Serabough, you perhaps want to explore the hunting field for any anomaly, it could be a quest. -I already told my friend to do that! -Same, we''re organizing 10 newbies group to look for weird thing -Now no one dare to attack any monster... -We only could wait.. -Yes. -GUYS! GUYS! I just come back from the rabbit field! -So what''s happening? -There are sculpture in that place!! -Sculpture? -Yes! It gave great effect like the sphinx. I got walking speed+12% and health and mana regeneration increase, but the sculpture is rabbit sculpture! -So? -There are additional description there, it said now all rabbit fall under her Yggdrasil Purview, attacking without a just cause may incur her wrath. Who is this Yggdrasil? -Yggdrasil?? Darn!! She''s the Goddess of Unity! -What? -Royal Road follow Nordic God Mythology for naming the God, such as Freya, Thor, and Loki. And Yggdrasil is the unity Goddess who separate the realm into nine realm. She like top class Goddess, even Odin hesitate to get on her bad side. -So the rabbit protected by that Goddess? -Not just the rabbit! The Fox, and Wolf too, But they got different God protecting them, Fox protected by Hlin, and Wolf by Loki. -This is insane... Wait.. Statue! The Statue, try destroy the statue! -We already tried! But there are magical protection around it! -My friend trip to pebbles when he want to swing his sword to the statue! It''s hit him on the head and kill him instantly. -Well you''re friend just got a bad luck.. -No! My another friend, a mage, try destroy it by fire ball, the spell reflected to him! -Same! My archer friend''s arrow suddenly change trajectory and hit our group instead. -How about asking for high level player help? -Of course we already did that! My sister tried to dispel the protection, but she got message that she lost 100 Faith due to trying to disturb another Goddess people. -So what to do... -This just in! Our guild Archmage just identified the statue thoroughly. It said that the statue were created by a Master Sculptor and undergone a divine-arcane magical ritual by a Serabough Scholar. -Who? -Don''t know, she said, the name were blurred by a high level spell. And it seems there are multiple ward around the statue. One of it generate -250 Luck to whomever attempt to destroy the statue, the other increase hardness to mithril, and the last ward would reflect any magic that thrown at the statue. -What?? Are you sure? -Of course! Our Guild Archmage shared the information window to our group! -Is there anything we could do? -....Perhaps we should start at another city?... [p=center]****[/p] "It is just me, or you seems more like a priest than magician?" "Oh don''t be that uptight Fou! You know very well that it''s hard for me to grant permanent protection by only using my own magic! I just Level 1 for Godsake! Also, God and Goddess also have difficulty to gain new follower in this competitive religious market, especially if it''s a race that hadn''t been accustomed in any religion before. By performing the ritual, the God and Goddess gain more follower, thus increasing their power and in exchange, they protected the race that worship them. It''s a win-win situation." "Hah, but you got nothing from it! Win-win situation? More like Win-win-Lost situation and in case you''re don''t get it, the lost were meant for you!" "Well, Helping others never a bad thing. I lucky to be elf and freedman, it made me apt in magic and technically immortal, you''re lucky because you''re the one who summoned by nice person like me. Every living deserve a chance, Fou." "Really??" "You''re know Fou, you are very lucky to be born here. In this world your God were real, your Heaven and Hell were apparent. You blessed by mana to ease your life and your priest are really the avatar with power that no one dare to doubted. In my world there are no healing with just saying heal! We couldn''t cure disease by saying cure!. Our God were only our figment of imagination, we create him because we''re afraid. Afraid of death, afraid of dark. Our religious leader were fraud. Our communion consist of masses who too afraid to against their parent belief. Our God never care, never do anything, because he never exist. But, every new innovation, every new technology, every new cure of disease that discovered, people from my world will lavish him praise." "We have no purpose, we''re just bunch of random molecule that somehow become alive. Imagine if you want to create a book, but instead hiring a novelist, you put a toddler to hit typing machine constantly for a year. Of course you''d think it''d be gibberish, but how if you have infinite toddler, infinite typing machine, and infinite time? Somehow in the land of infinity, at least one of the toddler would managed to create a readable novel." "And we freedman were that novel. A lucky being from the random chance of infinite, infinite plane." "But you have purpose, you have goal. Perhaps a horrendous goal if we considered it from good God point of view, such storming the heaven gate and bring destruction to the whole living. However, goal were goal nonetheless. Have you ever tried looking within? What''s your purpose? Why are you here? We, freedman simply don''t have any. What we do meant nothing. And for being that granted faculty, that''s somehow saddening. Despairing." "That''s why we create, that''s why we innovate and that''s why we indulge ourselves in our every day life. We just want to fill the void within our heart." "Due to that reason, in my personal humble opinion, there are no such thing as a monster, every one and every living were same, in this world we would never die, but in our world? Someday. Somehow we will. We have no forever because there are no such thing as forever, So when I live, why don''t I extend my help to the other who need it? Why I dare to call my life more mattered? More precious? More worth it than the other? Why I want to take the dream of other because we differ? Why I want to rob other from the peace that they desire? I simply got lucky to be born in the top race, Fou, simply got lucky." "I...never thought like that before.." "I know, and it''s okay. Come on, see that''s cave? It''s a goblin lair, which God do you think welcome them?" "...Embinyu maybe, Hel would not mind either..." [p=center]****[/p] "We don''t know how we could ever thank you." Vincent stuttered, he tried with all his might to keep the plastered faint smile in his currently wavering lips. In front of him a large creature with resemblance to the majestic sequoia staring at him intently. His rooted brown foot stood high as the elves shoulder blade, his body were painted in the red soil of nearby alluvial mud; indicate his authority of his remaining race. Vincent could observe the reassuring fake smile of his brightening the uneventful evening. "We treant were originally served under the order of druid, we nurture the life of the forest, and guard it as a place for living. However a thousand year ago, in those senseless, senseless war, the greed of the mortal were causing havoc around the world, the druid order decide to sacrifice their life to cast five hundred years protection to our forest. The wars end, and the protection follow suit. In this five hundred year we couldn''t do much, without druid order acting as our Vicar, the connection with Her Yggdrasil, may She bless the living within her benevolence, were disappear. We couldn''t protect the forest anymore, the elves sometimes tried to help, but their number were limited, and the forest were too fast. Without our power, the greed of the mortal invade the whole forest, and we''re stuck here, rotting our root." "Her Yggdrasil told me when you finished to enchant our statue. Firstly, that we''re fell under her grace once more. And we thank you for that. The rustle of wind also told me that you have been doing the similar to every creature, whether they''re good, indifferent, or even evil without discriminating any." "We couldn''t give you any treasure for we don''t have any, but we could give you our recommendation." "Recommendation?" "Within her grace, Within her bless. We treant, recommend thee."

Due to your unselfishness God and Goddess had agreed to grant you one reasonable wish! Please name your wish.
"I don''t know what to say, Elder, I only do what I think it''s right. I don''t think I even deserved this much honor..r" "Nonsense! In this five hundred years of mortal greed and 5 years of freedman arrival, no one ever try to protect us fully. Yes sometimes some mortal would sympathize with our fate, but they could only help temporarily, no one have ever managed to gave us full protection for indefinite time! You deserved to be the Peacekeeper. Even the God and Goddess had agreed to grant you one wish, don''t they?" "That is true...but..." "But what my boy? You''re the most kind mortal I ever seen, you even treat that imp of yours with respect as friend! I never even see any dark magician do the same, and you not even one!" "Thats... Well.. Thank you Elder." "Thanks to you too. Now shoo, spread those peace around young elf, you have whole continent to cover." [p=center]****[/p] Great, it''s worked as planned. HA HA HAHA HAHA Chapter 9: Mandatory Life-Changing Journeys Montage Serabough situated in the intersection of the great meridian and 10th degree of south latitude. The climate tend to be all years lukewarm, coupled with monotonous variation of mild rainfall in the end of August to mid December. Cartographer and frontier alike dubbed Serabough blissful weather as Land of Forever Spring. However, Serabough''s climate didn''t came from nature. In fact, until three hundred years ago, Serabough citizen were questionably adjusted to it''s region peculiar Storm and Twister weekend. Landlocked between the foreboding Plains of Despair in the East, scorching Desert of Tranquility in the South, and barren Barouge Mountains on the North. Serabough weather were rather peculiar, if not downright unsuitable for living. However through enormous persistence and undying stubbornness of it''s citizen. Serabough town Wizards were able reconstruct the ancient magic of weather control, thus relieving Serabough from it''s ill-fated curse. Armed with clear weather and mental fortitude that built from hundred years of relentless persistence, Serabough agriculture were flourished. It is well-known that if their basic need were fulfilled, human would seek new challenge for themselves, adapting and constructing to claim their right of better living. Equipping themselves with army of trained soldiers and loyal knight commander, Rosenheim Kingdom were born. Led by their well-meaning king, Rosenheim managed to fend off the thousand-years threat from Plain of Despair''s aberration. Celebrating their changed luck and well-deserved success, Rosenheim''s Royal seeks to brought prosperity for his people. In accordance to the big book of ''What Every Developing Kingdom Should Know''. Rosenheim decide to follow the way of commerce and embark in the trade of natural resources and craftsmanship. Merchant were ordered to establish a trade road. Unfortunately their choice were rather limited, Desert of Tranquility, were.... a desert. There were no point to venture through that water sucking sandbox, except if you were an adventurer who eager to feel the state of unquenchable thirst or those peculiar sunburn masochists. Plain of Despair were a big no-no, the rumor said that you wouldn''t last ten minutes in that place. The rumor were proven by Serabough Capital Warden, he decided to gave three death-sentenced prisoner a chance of amnesty by dropping them in the border of the Plain of Despair. According to the Warden''s hourglass, they last about 8 minutes and 57 seconds before two monsters gulping their last cracked bone. Brent Kingdom in the North were out of question, Barouge Mountains created a landscape that only viable to knight and warrior whom possessed high stamina. Additionally, Rosenheim and Brent foreign relation were rather... finicky. Their last war didn''t end in peace, rather it''s end in a tense cease-fire which both kingdom never bother to terminate. Therefore, the merchant option only Parvan''s pass of the Northwest, located between Barouge and Thoron mountain, Merchant of Rosenheim managed to established trade with the Briton Alliance. The road were called Conatus Itinere, which translate to Path of Effort. Vin and Fou were travelling the mentioned road. Posed as travelling adventurer with Fou as his pet Owl. Originally, Vin asked the merchants the required fare to board their wagon. However all the merchant shook their head, even at his one hundred gold coin offer. A hundred gold were too small fee to bother when they paid their mercenary 35 gold per person, not to mention additional 1 gold per kill they made when protecting the caravan. "Is there any possibility that you could spare me any room at all?" "No can''t do kid. It''s full." Vincent didn''t want to resort to teleportation to arrive at Parvan, unless it''s an Epic Teleport Skill. Teleportation with no prior visiting were suicide. scrying would not help much, his level were far too low, and He did want to enjoy adventuring and popping to one city to another definitely did not count as adventuring. "How about if I worked as your mercenary?" "Hah! We''re not small caravan kid! We had 200 mercenaries already! What do you think you could do that they couldn''t?"\ "Umm... I could discourage monster from attacking? Well, it''d not work if you decide to attack them first, but still.." "Pfff! HA HA HA HA! Seriously? That''s impossible! All of the monster in the road were so aggressive they''d attack anyone they see! Or smell, depend on what kind of monster." "Perhaps you attacked them first?" "Don''t be stupid kid! We brought expensive wares, why we''d risk on attacking monster on the road? We want a safe journey, that''s why we hired those competent mercenary." "Umm..." "Say what, you could hitchhiked my wagon, if it proven that until you leave there are no monster attacking without provocation, I''d gave you a free ride, if not, you should paid me a thousand gold!"

The rest of the week went uneventful. Geovanne, the scouting ranger were baffled. Normally, the caravan would be attacked at least two times per day, ranged from weak kobold and beastmen, to the more difficult monster like gargantuan and digging mole who would create a hole under the road and pull the unsuspecting caravan along with their owner underground. What surprise Geovanne more were the fact that the monster were indeed approaching. But after certain distance from the caravan, suddenly the monster would turned still, and after three minutes of looking contemplative, the monster would walk away with no apparent reason at all. He did not complain though, the additional gold payment were only available to the butchering mercenaries like those AOE-specialized magician. As a ranger, his main weapon were bow and arrow, it deal a decent damage, but still significantly less than the specialized archer, his risk of death were far greater should the monster decide to attacked. Therefore, as a scout this condition could be called a lucky break, he got paid for scouting and didn''t need to worry about death. The others opinion were varied, the merchant of course were satisfied with the current condition, they got to pay the mercenary less and have a safe journey. The rest? Well not so much. Grumbling of dissatisfaction could be heard from the guarding warriors. Less attack mean less pay, and since they under contractual obligation to not provoke the monster, they couldn''t do anything. Archers and magicians were indifferent, they''d not mind to get additional income from the monster attack, however since their defense were rather low, they prefer a smooth journey. Since some of them did want to travel to Parvan and death before arrival means you''d be revived in the Serabough, causing lot of wasted time. "Soo, what kind of wish did you asked?" Asked Fou, tugging my hair with his feathered wing. "Don''t know.. I haven''t got the right one." answered Vin. "Well, make up your mind, master. How about gold? Yes, yes.. wealth beyond your wildest dream!" "Midas scroll, I just need to transform copper to gold." "Eternal life?" "I''m a freedmen, Fou." "Legendary item? Artifact?" "I already able to practically use all existing magic. What kind artifact do I need?" "Power? Like a kingdom for your own." "I''m an Emissary of Concord, my job description is to promote harmony, owning a kingdom would resulted in conflict of interest." "Bah, a mortal with no desire, the bane of every tempter." "Yeah, sure, What I want is to understand magic better." "Wish for all knowledge then!" "That''d surely categorized as unreasonable wish." "That''s true..." "Errr. Firstly do you empower the magic?" "Correct." "Every single one?" "That is true." "For every one?" "No-discrimination, magic is for every one who capable to use it." "How do you turned back into mana? Like for example after been turned to fireball." "Simple! After our energy turned to the other, our consciousness would reappear under Her Yggdrasil tree, and we would drifted back after our energy were replenished. If you mortal created magic item, we''d stay there until it destroyed." "I see, I see. But do you guys only exist to... I don''t know, powering magic?" "Well of course we''d love to have same freedom as the mortal, but everyone got their role! And our were to empowered the magic." "Oh, how about if you''re turned into those golem?" "If it the crude mindless type, we will just be their power source. If it''s the sentient kind? Our consciousness would meld with other mana that present. Our personality would be heavily affected by the property that the creator will the golem to be. Earth golem for example would be kind-hearted with a stubborn attitude." "It''s liberating of course, but we won''t remember ourselves ever been a mana." "Correct! You''d only remembered that after you released from the golem." "Not to mention you have to heed every your creator command." "A reasonable command, Dev" "Yeah, right! I remembered when I turned into golem, my creator insert infatuation in the golem mind (a.k.a us). Well, long story short, he made us a meat shield in the barrage of volley. We were so in love with him that time, we don''t think anything else." "That''s terrible!" complained Vin. "Well not really, we practically immortal. He''s not." "Umm, how about if I made a golem while you maintained your consciousness, is that feasible?" "Don''t know but--" "KID!" Roswitch suddenly open the wagon window. "Stop cooping yourself in the wagon, we arrived in Pavan, already." "Talk to you later, Dev, Vriv." Whisper Vin. "Talking with your Owl, I see, Kid nowadays." "Ehm! Five hundred moons ago, Parvan were known to be a simple fief which attended by her Marchioness of the Land, Theressa Millioresti Angelo de Pavan. Her ruling days were modest and humble, there were no conflict that couldn''t be solved after three days of reasonable discussion, nor there were any breakthrough that exciting enough to giddy up the travelling bard to devote a song to her work. In her days, the common of Pavan were enjoying a simple life of belly-filling farming. Their motto were; work until your need were kept, then let''s the happy jack ran amok. The happenstance were occurring at the emerging days of Rosenheim. His Majesty, the Grace of People, Protector of Common, King Reinheart Neivelle Theodarren I of Serabough, Lavias, Baran, and of his other realms and territories were uniting the sparse settlements near Serabough to what the people knew as Rosenheim kingdom today. However, Parvan were a special case, located within the charted territory that His Majesty tried to include, half of the other Parvan territory were fell under the dominion of Briton Alliance. Her Marchioness herself were indifferent to the impeding development, either Briton or Rosenheim were fine, for what she deemed worthy were peace and content of her people. Unwilling to create unnecessary enemy, His Majesty convey a well-placating writ with lot of purple-prose euphemism and subtle ennui to Hir Appointed of the Agreeing Council, Bearer of the Flag, Vistivious Mellindia Everal. Fortunately for Her Marchioness, His Majesty and Hir Appointed were both agree to put Parvan as independent region as the two sovereign symbol of friendship and reasonability. Five hundred moons later, with the development of Parvan''s Pass as the main trade road of Briton and Rosenheim, Parvan''s economy were flourished. Most of the Parvan''s townsfolk had left their clearing and open more interesting business. Quality store and shop were open in every corner offering purchase of highest quality and service to the passing merchant. For the more economically-challenged traveler, Parvan also provide the more cost-friendly peddler that could be visited in the central market. Vin and Fou were just finishing their small shopping at the said''s grocery peddler. They''re restocking for Fou''s artificial blood supply. Putting the last item to his hammerspace, Vin said a simple thanks to the merchant and bid their goodbye. **** "Hello, welcome to Central Parvan''s Magician Tower, how could I help you?" greet a smiling receptionist behind the front desk. From his forced smile, Vin could observed that the receptionist was tired, it was a late afternoon anyway, thus, understandable. However he still smiling despite his tiredness, professional indeed, the receptionist were wearing a simple ground-length magician robe with the tower sigil embroidered in his left muffler''s patch, his brown hair were kempt in the popular curtain style; deviation from formal wear in earth, but not everyone were ready to throw out their fashion statement to compel to what the elder deem appropriate. "Ah co--" "Perhaps you were interested to become a Magician? Our tower provide five different type of magician, Neutral, Fire, Wind, Earth, and Water Magician. Neutral were able to learn all types of magic, however the strongest spell were only available to specialized magician, therefore specializing is more recommended." Vin was dumbfounded. Why the receptionist offer him to change to magician? Ah! He was wearing his beginner suit instead of those expensive outfit he bought at the Seamstress, therefore the receptionist were assuming he was a magician to be novice. "To become magician you need at least 50 intelligence, pay 1 gold for the administration fee, and--" "Tev! We ran out of egg!" shout a blue-robed magician as she approaching the receptionist who seems to be called Tev. "What? You haven''t baked the cake?" said Tev in disbelief. "I''m busy!! I already stocked the ingredients in the kitchen! But someone use all the egg I bought!" "Ohh.." "YOU! You''re the one who used those egg! TEV!!" "Sorry Chie, I...was....hungry..." "What kind of excuse is that? It''s already too late to buy it at the store!!" Engulfed in anger, Chie emanating a large blue ball of magical spell aimed at the frightened Tev Lord of Ocean hear my plea, Beseech my enemy with your raging roar! Destroy h-- "No Chie!! Don''t! Pleeaase!" Troubled with the development, Vin lightly tap Chie wrist, since spell of high caliber require utmost concentration to cast a simple gesture could break the spell casting. The blue ball in in Chie hand were pulsed, then flickered out. "Here Miss, I''ve leftover egg, I want to make omelette for tomorrow breakfast, but it seems you need it more than I do." said Vin handing over three egg to Chie before she could said anything. "..Ah? Oh! Thanks! Now I could bake the cake! But, who are you?" "I''m Vin." "Glad to meet you Vin, you''re lifesaver, We''re holding surprise birthday party for our Chancellor, but certain someone decide to use all of the remaining egg for himself" said Chie glancing coldly to Tev. "Sorry..." "Well, do you want to join the party, Vin? It''d be fun!" "Sure!" **** "SURPRISE!" shout thirty people in unison, two of them were blowing rainbow-colored confetti with the wind magic create a swirling pattern around the room. Three others were releasing balloon from what it seems to be teal-colored santa''s bag continuously, gushing the flow to the surprised person who just entered the door. "Oh my! What''s this?!" "Your Birthday party, Master Evellene!" replied Chie excitedly. "We''re set it up!" said Tev. "Oh my, thank you all, I don''t know what to say." Needless to say Master Evellene -the Chancellor- were surprised and pleased to everyone kindness. Then she did what every birthday girl expected to do; blowing up the candle and making a secret wish, after that, she greet everyone with high enthusiasm (not to mention giving each guest a piece of cake). "Ah, who we have here?! I''m quite sure I never met you before, child!" said Master Evellene to Vin. "His name is Vin!! Tev ate all the egg to make the cakes! Luckily, Vin have some!" "That''s true.... Chie were already prepared to cast Ocean''s Wrath to me! Vin is a lifesaver!" "I see, thanks for saving my surprise party Vin, even though I didn''t know it!" "You''re exaggerating Master Evellene! All I did were gave Chie three eggs!" "Well it doesn''t reduce the importance of those eggs, though! Hmm, by the way, are you here to becoming a magician like us? You even have a pet owl already! See that Tev, Chie! That''s how you tell everyone you were a magician by a single glance! First impression is very Important!" "Ah but--" "Master Evellene here were a great Master! She''s Neutral Magician specialized in Weather Control! In fact she''s even the city official Weather master! She keep the day bright, and the needed rain pour on midnight so it doesn''t bother anyone!" "Now, now Chie. It seems Vin want to say something. Hmm? Isn''t that right Vin?" said Master Evellene slowly caressing Fou. Suddenly a wavy yellow light were formed around Fou, three seconds later, the light flickered and reveal Fou''s imp form. "Now look what you''ve done, smart guy." "Imp! Talking imp!" shout Chie. "How it could get here?! I thought there is a protection for it! Vin is that your imp?" "Oh my..." mumbled Vin. "I''m very sorry at the trouble Master Evellene, Chie, Tev. However Fou were my...hmm...companion.. yes, companion..." "Ohh, that''s quite interesting. " said Master Evellene. "I don''t meant to be rude, but Chie and Tev seems troubled with the cakes when I was coming, so...." "Well... what I meant is.. Err.. I came here because I need to borrow, well perhaps rent one of your lab... I don''t really know the exact system." "But I thought you''re just a beginner Vin!" spouted Chie "Well, not really, my other attire would attract too much attention, and Parvan''s pass isn''t exactly safe. Well..umm.. here my card Master Evellene." said Vin showing his Scholar identification card to Master Evellene.

"Me neither, Master Vin, Please forgive us!" add Chie. "That''s okay, Chie, Tev, you don''t need to add Master, I''m definitely not a master magician, I''m simply a little bit more studious." "But-" "That''s fine, I don''t really keen with formality, as long I stayed here, I hope we could be friends." "Oh, okay... Vin." said Chie. "Umm, why do you come here again, Vin?" asked Tev. "I need to borrow the tower''s lab, sometimes idea just popped up during travel you see? And I like to test it." "That''s true! I wrote any interesting idea in my journal, you must be prepared to welcome sudden idea! Like yesterday I just finished warm-snow park in Marquees south garden!" said Master Evellene. "Really? Could I come master?" asked Chie. "I''d ask Marquees, Chie. But anyhow, is there anything else do you need Vin?" Yes, Master Evellene, I''m currently seeking land in sale, I want to open a shop." "What kind of shop?" "Well, it''s a bit secret for now, but one thing I could tell you, It''d be unique!" "Hmm, unfortunately Parvan doesn''t really have land to be purchased. With so much trade going on in Parvan, every merchant want to own a land, so I''m afraid currently there are no land in sale." "But Master, how about the tournament?" said Chie "What tournament?" asked Vin "Ah yes, this year Marquees held a Tournament, the first prize is a piece of Land in central market, it''s quite huge, about five shop size I think? If I remember correctly, It was Cecil''s, she lost a bet with Marquees, and had to given up that store." "That''s awful!" "Not really, she own, like, another twenty other store in town. It seems to me she just enticing Marquees to up his wager, I was there. Next thing we knew, she got three year tax relief for all his shop from the next bet." "...." "So, I think the Marquees is trying to make up his loss, you know, Entrance Fee, 10% Betting Tax, Admission Fee, Food Vending Right ,while he himself post his strongest knight in the Tournament. The tournament system is a simple one of one battle." "Umm.. well, I think I''d try?" "That''s a spirit, Vin! It''d be nice to see magic-class win in tournament once in a while." "Eh?" "Well, our quick spell dealt little damage, and our longer spell need high concentration and long casting time to evoke, in one on one we basically an easy prey" "...." But don''t worry! I have every confidence that scholar like you could Win! The registration is tomorrow, Chie and Tev would show you the place!" **** "The admission fee for non-citizen is 100 golds, but with your fame I could reduce it to 71 golds." said the bespectacled elder at the registration desk. His pointy, long finger alternating with each other, giving impression that he would snagged all Vin money given a chance. "That''s expensive!" exclaimed Vin horrified. "We know..." grumbled Chie and Tev simultaneously "For citizen it''s 75 golds, non-citizen 100 golds, that''s why we couldn''t enter it." "I heard many of the participant borrow the fee from merchants at high interest." "We don''t want any debt." "So we don''t enter." "Sigh, really, 71 golds? Fine, here sir." said Vin handing the admission fee. "Thank you, your participation number will be #3214, please be noted that battle to death only allowed if both participant were freedman, battle would end if any of the participant were dead, incapacitated, loss hir consciousness, surrender, or expelled from the battle arena for five subsequent seconds." "Okay." "Your battle begin in five minutes, enjoy!" **** The crowd itself not huge, in fact the stadium were rather sparse, only 1 in 4 seat were taken. According to Tev this was because the tournament were just preliminary, and only those who really into betting were present. The remaining spectator would wait until it reached semi-final to see more interesting battles. There were four arena in the stadium and due to being preliminary, all of them currently in use, Vin were placed in the outermost left arena. "Why you use those newbie suit? Those guys with destroy you!" asked Fou. "To throw them off duh! If I''m showed up as a no-threat newbie they''ll ignore me and not put up too much guard." "But the defense is like super Low!" "That''s why, this is my good outfit! I only put illusion on it to looks like a newbie outfit." "Good, good, finally you have use for that overgrown cranial." "Hey!" "Shush! Your opponent here." Vin opponent were a young freedman, probably around his twenty, his class were knight, he appeared to use a full-plate steel armor with sword and shield as main weapon. Looking at Vin in his newbie suit with a long wooden staff, Vin could saw the knight trying to hold back his sneer (probably sneering would reduce knight''s honor point? Vin were not very sure). To the knight, Vin were a magician that had just finished his job change quest. "Young mage! Don''t you think it''s too soon for you to enter this tournament?" said the knight, followed by the laugh of the crowd who nodding to his remark. "Uh, um... I would try my best, sir Knight. P-Please bear with me." said Vin faking a stutter, the crowd laugh at his response, some of the spectator even took a pity to the cute little elf. Tev and Chie whom sitting in the crowd of course knew better, silently they cursed Vin shameless disguise. "What are your plan?" asked Fou whispering to Vin. "Keep the knight distracted for five seconds, I already prepared a perfect spell." "Alright boy! Here I come!" said the knight sheathing his sword and marching forward. In instant Fou flied to the knight and slam his face with his owl''s claw. "Aw! What''s this!" said the Knight trying to get Fou off his face. The crowd laugh even louder seeing that. And shall the grace move thee, from thee predestined place! After the five seconds Fou immediately flied back to Vin. The angered knight began to rushing again, but suddenly he began to writhing in pain and compressing his chest, he fell to the floor. "Umm sir Knight, are you okay?" said Vin approaching the knight and poking him with his wooden staff. "W- wh" mumbled the knight still holding his chest. "Um I don''t know what happen but I''m sorry about this, my teacher told me to win." said Vin as he began rolling the knight outside arena with his staff, meanwhile the crowd were silent, still shocked with this development. "Mr. Referee, I think It had been five seconds?" "Ah sorry! 5,4,3,2,1! The winner is Vin!" shout the referee. "What! How could that be?" "I don''t know! One second the bird slamming to the knight face and suddenly he fell down." "Do you see any spell cast?" "No! I don''t see any!" In the corner Tev and Chie were nodding in amazement. Vin were a scholar afterall, every magician knew you should not mess with the one who create majority of spell. **** "How?" asked Fou "Teleport object. Pebble." "I don''t get it." "Simple, I use teleport object to teleport very small pebbles to his coronary artery." "Coro- what?" "Coronary artery, blood vessel that give nutrient supply to heart, that pebbles blocking it, thus, giving him a heart attack." "I never heard such kind of method!" "Well, human body were weak from inside Fou! In fact every race weak from the inside! It just people prefer blasting fireball and sword slashing instead targeting the body''s weakness. The former could be protected by armor, the latter? I''m not very sure." "....I''m glad you''re my master." Embrace!" a shimmering white light coordinate themselves within the magical circle on the floor. Vin could observed the awkward movement of the still-stiff golem in the center of the ritual. Last night, he have a long conversation with Vriv and Dev about nature of Mana, Vin offered them chance to become a humanoid golem but retaining their original memory. Of course Vriv and Dev were excited, and the news spreading like wildfire to other Mana. Lots of them were literally hogging him demanding to be included. Vin agreed to a certain condition. Because the retained memory, the golem body were unstable and a ritual were needed to stabilize the golem body. Vin used the store that he won from the tournament (which story for another time) as the base of the ritual. The ritual were needed to be made permanent by permanency spell. Which require lots of mana. However it no longer concern, since there were lots of volunteer. Next, he need to create a golem body as a base, because of course no single mana could possibly move the golem body around, they agree to form 8-stack mind hive, personality meld, that would change the head personality every week or so. Secondly, for expressing their gratitude, the mana agreed to work for Vin for certain amount of times. And coincidentally, Vin just were in need for employee in his brand new alchemical store, Vival Pharma. With only 4 times workday a week, the mana agreed it''s were a win-win situation. And since mana were lived since the beginning of time and most often used by magician and alchemist alike. Vin literally have a big book of everything in Alchemy. All the recipe that needed mana were known by.. well... the mana. And they have no qualm to tell Vin all about it. Which is perhaps made Vin the most successful alchemist in the whole royal road. And perhaps the richest, well, at least, soon-to-be richest. Chapter 12: Pleasant Banter Emily rubbed her forehead for the third time in the last ten minutes. Glancing forward, she found herself frowned to the ever-smiling lady in front of her. The lady herself had a striking attire that speaks confidence in volume. A biretta with a pair of gleaming white wings perched on her top and for heaven sake, a bell gown with size that indicate fourteen-layer petticoats. Not to mention the sacred, well, feared actually, distinct ochre VV sigil, embroidered in her left shoulder. "I assure you my lady, our offer is very beneficial to both of us, if my lady is willing to sign~." "Certainly, to you and your company, it''d be beneficial indeed." remark Emily hastily. "I''m very sorry my lady, perhaps there are certain clauses, that my lady deemed in need of.... further inquiries?" "Inquiries?? Inquiries??!!! Your company inquiries me to signed off four hundred thousand golds worth of land for a mere hundred grand!!" "Ah, but my lady, the land is quite small, not more than three farmland wide, I suppose.." "The land located on central market!" "That is true my lady, but perhaps my lady haven''t heard the benefit that our business brought in the developing towns? Especially, in the flourishing frontier towns like Eigel." "Why do you think I tolerate your presence here?" "Ah, my lady is the most informed." "Spill it." "Excuse me, my lady?" "The additional perks, bonus, whatever you people called it. Tell me all what you could offer." "Vival were ready to give my lady the needed 35% discount for all my lady and my lady''s affiliate for two hundred consecutive use of the Gates." "And?" "Vival also prepared to held, for limited time only, our Corporate Social Responsibility program, by giving away newbie pack in the case Vival were allowed by my lady to open our branch here." "Is that it?" "Vival also agree to gave my lady and fifteen chosen affiliate that my lady selected as a premium member of Vival. Premium member would be waived of any additional service fee that Vival accounted for it''s normal member. Including the famous personal, case-by-case basis, Vival Dungeoneering Consultation. " "But of course, if my lady were chose to have all of the rewards included in Vival Contract, Vival would need a relieve of 2.5% tax that imposed on Vival for the next twenty seven month." Emily closed her eyes. Vival were the big pharma, well the only big pharma. They popped in Royal Road about three months ago, no one know where they come from. But with flair of negotiation they managed to open their branches in fifteen towns and counting. Their potion collection were very vast, from anti sting bites to skill cool down reducer, they have all of it. Not to mention, a month ago when they, God know how, managed to open the Gates. The Gates were teleportation station that could transport you to any town that own Vival branch. She remember the uproar in her frequented forum when Vival did so. Usually, a gate need forty wizard on to perform the ritual with lots and lots of reagent that is so damnable expensive. And even then, they could only open it for a week top, with twenty days of cool down. How Vival managed to open a continuously operating Gate were beyond her. The teleporting fees were still expensive, thankfully, about 900 gold per person plus 1.5 gold per 10 kilo of weight. But of course, the rich merchant has no qualm about that mere pennies. Teleporting were far more cheaper than hiring mercenaries to protect their wares from bandit and it faster too. This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience. Thus, merchants were hailing Vival as the centuries lifesaver, while mercenaries despise Vival grudgingly (because they still need Vival potion). The customer information also shared by every branches, guaranteeing convenience of it''s customer. Emily realize that she did want Vival, no she need Vival to be exist in her town, there were Loiree and Penell in the east and west of Eigel, and Vival only open branches between towns that packed quite distance (thus, maximizing their Gates profit). And if she refused here, Vival would simply move to Loiree or Penell. And she couldn''t have that. Merchant would chose that town and the rest of the population will follow, not to mention the new players that will also chose the other town. "Fine. I accept your term." **** "It is the most peculiar, Vincent, all of your store potions have a question mark effect when I Identified it." Comment Weed with his "sincere" smiles as he polished the marble statue of siren that Vincent commissioned to be perched on the top of the Geind Municipal''s Vival Branch. "Hmm? Are you sure Weed? Perhaps your eyes playing tricks on you? If I remembered correctly you have played for 24-hours long without a break. Perhaps you need a rest?" "Possible. But my identify skill is Advanced Level 8, Vincent. Ah, do you want the siren''s diadem to be emptied?" "Yes, please put this gem etched to this diadem. You must be very keen observant to have such high identify skill, my friend." "Blue aqua gem of the silent sea? This could fetch a whole town! Are you sure it''d not be stolen? Yes, I need to be observant, in this dog eat dog world, bad thing happens, you see." "Do not worry, I have taken every known precaution. So, the usual payment?" "Glad to hear that. Of course, with a little bit bonus perhaps this time?" "Of course, dear friend." "Non-disclosure eh? So what is your plan, the mysterious Vincent?" "The usual. The cliche. The most profitable. That you may or may not already knew." "The most interesting...." Spoiler : Hello guys, sorry for out so long, I went through lots of Idea for this buffering chapter to keep it more interesting.
