《Sanctum lost》
Arc 1 Prologue
In the wide world there was a particular forest, it was this place where few dared to venture that our story begins. This forest was not a deadly, dreary place filled with spiders and monsters intent on killing all who entered. No, this was a bright forest, filled with woodland animals and peace. The forest was filled with tall, thick trees and had a canopy of leaves to block the sun and provide shade to the residents living within it. The ground was a heathy color, filled with fallen leaves and newly growing plants sprouting with their green stems reaching to the sky. Deer would run peacefully through the open clearings without worry, as there were few being that were predators living in this forest. However there was a reason why so few entered this forest, and the reason was not something deadly; it was that the forrest was particularly unimportant.
This forest was filled with natural magics, and in turn it had a habit of turning all who entered away from it. Now this wasn¡¯t something uncommon in the world as magic saturated everything in existence and places like this were fairly common to find. As this effect was such a common occurrence in the world, the intelligent races developed ways to work with ever the changing magics. Over time some people could see magic and walk where few could ever go, and others could manipulate magic to help or harm. It was in this forest that a certain kingdom rose to power, it was a kingdom surrounded by the maze of trees that was incredibly hard to find, something seen as a myth to most who would go to this place. However this kingdom held a dark secret so black that none who knew it were able to leave alive- a secret so dark that even the peasants would tremble in fear every day.
In this kingdom there was a castle, it was a tall structure made of stone that rose high into the sky, far above the trees. Curiously, the closer one came to this castle the harder it was to see it, and it was in this place that there were three people. They were in a dark room filled with ritual stones and magic circles, and in the middle of one circle was a baby boy. This baby was like any other baby, it had hair just beginning to start growing in and cried as it was hungry or frightened. This baby had grey eyes that looked like storm clouds and was currently screaming as it lay in the center or a red circle filled with strange symbols. The circle and symbols were not quite red, but they were the color of dried blood. As for the other two people in the room, one had a majestic crown on his head, adorned with jewels and other precious stones. He wore a regal cloak and was wearing a red shirt on his muscular torso, this man was a giant compared to the baby, but in reality was only a little over six feet tall. He stood with a regal aura, and his golden eyes looked around the room in expectation as his brown hair rustled slightly with an unseen wind. The person next to the regal man was a woman of similar stature, she was just under six feet tall herself, and she was wearing a dark cloak with a similar red shirt on her chest. She had deep golden hair that was pulled elegantly behind her head, her golden eyes looked about the room and she smiled as she looked at the ring containing the baby.
For above the baby was a darkness forming, it was swirling as it churned in the air- the substance oozing dark ichor that pooled onto the cold stone floor. Forming around the baby the ichor rose, taking the form of a black, clawed hand that held the child as it rose from the pool. Soon the hand had become an arm and the arm was next to a head, and a torso rose to connect the body parts. In a few moments the room was eerily quiet, even the newly born baby had stopped crying as the demon took shape. And take its shape it did, the demon was a tall figure, taller then the man in the room, and had spiraling black horns on its head. This being had blood red eyes and a mouth filled with dark knife like fangs, it had no other facial features then this, and the rest of the demon¡¯s body was obscured by thick clothing. However through the clothes one could easily see the well toned muscles and capable stance the monster took as it stood in the room, the blood red circle beneath it shining with a dark, evil light. Holding the child the demon caressed its cheek and looked at the two standing before it for a moment, the air of amusement forming around it. After all, why wouldn¡¯t it be amused at the antics of the two people (if one could call them that) in front of it, these people would call itself from the abyss every few decades and offer a young, pure soul to keep themselves from growing old. Right now the demon had taken countless souls from the two, but ironically couldn¡¯t take their souls should they be offered. Demons would only work with the pure, and Angels would only work with the damned- it was just the way things worked, and rules were rules no matter how much one might disagree with them.
Not that it minded. The demon had gained substantial power from the innocent souls it had devoured, and was at a comfortable standing in the netherworld. It was now a ¡®Duke¡¯ of sorts in it¡¯s native realm, and it was only growing in power as the couple offered more and more souls to feed it. After all, the three had worked out a deal when they had began this exchange long ago. The two would act as ¡°Guardians¡± of the pure and innocent child after obtaining the rights to care for the innocent soul through various means, and then they would give the soul of the child to the demon. It was a simple deal that exploited a loophole in the law of heaven and the netherworld, and for the last few hundred years it was something beneficial to both parties. Looking closer at this child¡¯s soul the demon smiled, it was not a smile of kindness- it was the smile of a predator who had found suitable prey.
With a deep rumbling voice the demon spoke, gently holding the babe in its arms, ¡°So, its time for us to continue our contract? You seem to have found a good soul here- I will give you two an extra few decades of time. This soul is worth a century of youth, and it quite pure- It must have been difficult getting a newborn like this. ¡± Its voice echoed in the chamber, and the two people laughed together in joy. Every soul they exchanged would give them a period of youth- and the younger and more pure the soul the more time they received from the demon. With this child they kindly received from a recently deceased family within the kingdom they would easily have a century of youth to enjoy. And nothing could stop them. Grinning the man spoke, ¡°Alright, lets sign the contract and be on our ways, we look forward to our next meeting.¡± Chuckling softly the demon casually opened a hand in front of the couple, and with a burst of dark energy a contract appeared- it was a contract to give ownership of a soul to the demon to do with as he pleased. Taking the contract the man and woman smiled, and then bit their fingers to sign with a bloody thumbprint. Just as the man pressed his thumb onto the contract a loud explosion echoed through the castle, it was a sound so powerful that it rock the room the contract was occurring in and the building itself groaned aloud.
Outside the castle was a single man in a white robe, the man was fairly old, with wrinkles on his face and grey hair on his head. He had sharp eyes and the winds blew through his balding head, his hands had wrinkles on them and he looked around tiredly. He was holding a book, and around him were the burned bodies of hundreds of nobles and guards. Looking closer at the bodies one could tell that they were not quite human. These people had fangs that took the place of their canines and their eyes were narrow slits, the burning flesh bubbled as sunlight touched them and the man took out an object from his robe. This object was a shield made of pure silver, a religious object of a certain church that was known through the land. This man held the item in front of him and screams were released by the burned bodies around him, ¡°Minions of the Damned! I banish you- With the power invested in me by the holy light I purge this place from your evil! With my light I will tear your illusions apart- be purged!¡± With that a burst of blinding white light burst from the mans body, spreading outwards in a sphere as all the ¡°humans¡± that were around him disintegrated and turned to ash. When the light cleared the castle was no longer something that was made of stone, it no longer had the majestic appearance of a place where a just ruler will reside. No, now the bricks and walls of the place were black with the deeds that had corrupted this place, looking at the building in front of him the priest suddenly felt a wave of vertigo. Would anyone else look at the castle they would see a black brick building with moss growing on the well kept walls, however the priest saw something quite different. Upon looking at the building he could see blood oozing from the walls and feel the hate of many souls that had been sacrificed here. Looking at the castle he took a deep breath and walked inside- he had a job to do.

The Queen looked at the King in surprise, and the demon looked at them, waiting for the contract to be completed- for the sake of closing any loopholes. Having finished his side of the contract the King gestured for the Queen to do her part, and without hesitation she signed the seal with her own thumbprint. Looking over the contract the demon smiled toothily, and turned about to walk into the writhing darkness that he had entered holding the baby in it''s arms.
*BANG*
The door to the room burst open as a priest walked in, he was covered in soot and ash and looking at the demon holding a child he spoke, ¡°Return to your realm demon. Or I will end your existence here, I claim this child in the name of Inocuis, the holy god. Be gone!¡± Laughing at the pulse of power the priest released the demon grinned as he watched the King and Queen rapidly age as his magic to give them their youth again was destroyed. Looking at his withered hands the King let out a scratchy croak of rage and despair as he reached to the demon before falling over, the Queen falling next to him as the two continued to rapidly age, their bodies turning to dust in moments. Laughing the demon looked at the priest, ¡°So you destroyed the statute to give them their youth. Amusing, but your too late Priest. You just killed the two who gave me guardianship over this child- he¡¯s mine by all rights now.¡± With his face showing no expression the priest looked at the demon, ¡°Well. If thats the case I just have to -¡± In the middle of his sentence the priest took out a bookmark from his bible and held it in front of him, a golden light shining on the piece of cloth as he instantly rushed at the demon making it gently drop the child to the ground. With a roar of anger the demon raised one hand and summoned a sword to block the priest, ¡°THAT BOY IS MINE BY THE RIGHTS OF HEAVEN AND THE NETHERWORLD.¡± pulling another sword out of the darkness the demon chopped down towards the priest¡¯s head. Stepping to the side the priest easily dodged the attack and was immediately hit by the demon¡¯s other sword, sending him flying into a wall across the room. Coughing some blood the priest stood up once more, preparing to attack.
Curiously, the baby wasn¡¯t making a sound despite the battle around it, this was because the moment the demon touched it, the baby was inflicted with a coma causing spell to keep it quiet. While the child was in his slumber the priest desperately fought against the demon, the creature of the netherworld easily sending the holy man flying with each hit. Looking at the demon the priest finally realized, ¡°You shouldn¡¯t be in this realm- Your a Arcduke!¡± Laughing the demon grinned wryly, ¡°I can go where I wish, and where I am called to.¡± Blood quickly fading from the outmatched priest¡¯s face, he looked at the demon once more and took a small vial from his pocket. This vial was the size of a persons index finger, and was filled with a sparkling liquid with specks of gold within. The cork stopping the liquid from leaving was firmly attached to the vial, and some runes were carved into it. Instantly throwing the vial the priest watched it slam into the demon¡¯s sword as it cut the projectile by instinct, and the priest smiled. When the vial broke the liquid inside spread out into the air, and wherever the liquid touched the demon the flesh bubbled and bled. Crying out in pain the demon jumped back to the portal, his eyes seething with hate, ¡°Mark my words priest. That boy is mine, and nothing can stop me from taking him. I have all the time in the world, so a few moments longer won¡¯t mean much.¡± Disappearing into the portal the demon was gone from the realm, and with the demon returned the portal blinked out of existence. Looking at the many blood painted runes in the room the priest got to work purifying it, after he prevented this place from being able to bring that demon back the priest would take the child out of this accursed kingdom.
During the battle the priest and demon didn¡¯t notice one thing. It was not a small thing, nor was it something of substantial importance. it was however something that would end up affecting the child in his future, when the demon bled and the holy water spread into the air a droplet of both substances entered the sleeping child¡¯s mouth through sheer coincidence. However as this was not noticed, neither the child, the priest, nor the demon knew about just what had happened and never would. Finishing purifying the room the priest nodded, he had destroyed the magic circles used to summon the demon, and he even went so far as to fill the room and saturate the stones with holy magic to rid of any lingering evil. With a heavy sigh the priest shook his head, ¡°I¡¯m glad the Archbishop insisted on giving everyone those Angel blessed vials, otherwise I would be dead right now. Now for the child¡¡± Looking at the sleeping baby the priest shook his head and made a sling to carry the baby. It was going to be a long journey back to the church, and almost on cue the baby woke crying loudly in the castle with the priest.
Several weeks of walking had passed, and walking into the church the priest groaned with deep dark rings under his eyes. He had been caring for the child on his back for the last few weeks as he traveled through the forest, and part of him wanted to leave the kid in the woods. However if he did that then his fight against the demon would have been wasted, and besides he had no reason to do such a thing other then because of being bitter about a lack of sleep. Lucky the child had fallen asleep and he was able to hand him off to a nun, telling her to alert the Archbishop to his arrival. Walking to a door, carved out of wood with a few holy runes of protection on it, the priest knocked on the door. From inside the room he heard an energetic voice, ¡° Come in!¡± Opening the door the priest saw a long man sitting on a chair hunched over a manuscript, getting up and stretching the young man hastily ran his hand through his black hair and looked at the priest with his deep blue eyes. He was wearing a similar robe to the priest, however his was lined with red accents to mark his rank within the church. Smiling slyly the Archbishop spoke, ¡°Welcome back Ardasil! You look older then normal¡¡± With an eye twitching the priest looked at the Archbishop taking a deep breath, ¡°Because you decided to make me look- and feel- like and old man this time! I nearly died at that place, there was an ARCHDUKE. AN ARCHDUKE I TELL YOU!¡± Laughing the Archbishop wiped tears from his eyes, and with a simple gesture the priest returned to normal. HIs balding, grey hair turned red and his face became younger by 40 years. Rubbing his face Ardasil gutted unhappily, being made to look and feel like a 60 year old man and then be sent on a mission to ¡®purge a hidden kingdom from evil¡¯ because the Archbishop was bored was not something anyone would consider fun. Especially when said Archbishop had Angels to help him when he needed to do something important- or pull off a good prank.
After grumbling for a while and complaining silently the priest finally spoke, ¡°I did as you asked, also as the source of the evil in that kingdom was the entire upper cast I had to purify the area, nothing of dark nature will step foot there for a few years as the forest absorbs the magic. I found an orphan as well, he was signed over to the Archduke I told you about earlier. As he has no family left in the kingdom, and is the last resident alive of that place, I brought him here to be cared for by the church.¡± Looking at Ardasil the Archbishop nodded and let his friend continue, ¡°Also, why did you send me in with a book? A book of all things! I¡¯m a holy knight not some church chanter for heaven¡¯s sake! I had to fight with a bookmark- do you know how embarrassing it is to face off against a demon with a bloody piece of cloth!?!¡± Laughing heartily the Archbishop knelt over, imagining the scene of the fight. after several minutes of laughter and complaining from Ardasil, the two finally became more serious. Looking at the priest the Archbishop spoke, ¡°So you brought an orphan from that place? Well, he should be safe here, and when he turns of age he will get the rights to his soul back. So we will just raise him here and teach him a few things before setting him loose in the world- don¡¯t worry about him. Also I have another mission for you.¡± With a cry of rage Ardasil walked out of the room and slammed the door behind him, not seeing the Archbishop laughing as he enjoyed the scene he had orchestrated.
Arc 1.1
Quote:The God Sethran is a being who will help all who ask, and he will shelter the young and innocent without question. From this church great good is born, and like all shadows born from the light darkness grows here as well. Due to this we must be on guard and accept the darkness we hold, lest we fall to it. -Book of Sethran chapter 6.3.2
The High Church of Sethran was a tall, gothic building the stood in the center of the city of Rethys- or rather, this church was also the city of Rethys. The High Church was a tall building that acted similar to a town hall and was where the Holy Knights and High Priests resided, this was the holy capital for all who worshiped Sethran, the god who protected the innocent. The surrounding town was made into three layers, the Inner most layer being where the church was. The middle layer was where a majority of the residents and shops were, and the outermost layer of the city was where the farms resided. Rethys was the holy capital, and as such nobody besides aspiring priests were allowed past the middle layer as the High Church was something only the few chosen priests could ever step into. The town was built in a victorian era fashion, with stone buildings and iron gates to close the streets in case of war- not only was the city a place holy worship, it was a fortress that was almost impenetrable to outside forces. Furthermore the walls that protected the each layer were carved with holy runes to prevent evil spirits from entering the city, everything was built as a part of the High Church in this unique city, and the layers worked as a maze to protect the High Church in the center of the city. In the Inner circle there was an orphanage that was where all who were saved from various demons and cults were sent to reside- this orphanage was closest to the heart of the city, and many of those inside would grow into knights and priests themselves- it wouldn¡¯t be too far fetched to say that this place was the home of many legends to be. It was also in this place that a baby was sent ten years ago, this baby had gone through various tests to see if it was safe and unaffected by demonic taint, and after being found that there was nothing to worry about it was sent to the orphanage to live in until it would have grown to be someone capable of protecting themselves and deciding their own future.
In this orphanage there was a large courtyard where a large group of children were able to be seen. There were a little over a hundred children at most, and they were divided into 3 groups, each holding various ages inside of them. The youngest group was of ages ranging from 5-9, the middle group was full of ages ranging from 10-14, and the oldest group was full of young adults between 15-18 years old. All these children stood in front of three people, three men to accurate. Each of the men held a weapon of some type and in turn would order the children to do various exercises. In the middle group of children there was a boy who stood resolute as he waited for his groups instructor to speak, he was only ten years of age and he had pitch black hair, his stormy grey eyes shone with a tinge of red in them as he looked around, his simple white tunic and pants fluttered in the wind and sweat rested on his brow. The instructors nodded to each other and then went to their respective groups having finished the warm ups, and one of the men walked to the group where this boy resided.
The Instructor was a tall burly man who¡¯s arms were covered in thick scars, he wore a tight fitting shirt and baggy pants as he looked at the crowd of children in front of him as they stood at attention. With a grin he spoke loudly to his group, ¡°ALRIGHT! Today I want you guys to do 200 push ups and jog 3 laps around the inner circle of the High Church. I¡¯m sure that isn¡¯t something too bad for all of you~¡± With a coy smile he listened to the groans of the children and watched as they started their exercises with despair filled eyes. After a two hours there was only one boy left doing push ups, he was the 10 year old who had black hair and grey eyes. He worked as hard as he could, but in truth he was pathetically weak- not that he didn¡¯t try to change that. This boy would always complete whatever unreasonable task that was assigned due to him being slower then the others to complete his exercises, and even though he did grow stronger, he grew so slowly that one couldn¡¯t tell he had changed at all. Currently this boy was on his 100th push up, he was wearing a drenched white tunic and long white pants as the dress code of the High Church demanded for the orphans in its care. However instead of any will to give up, this boy had a fire in his eyes, he was determined to become stronger, he wanted to be strong enough that nobody would be able to look down on him.
However the odds were stacked against him, this boy was not a pure-blood human, and his non-human blood was something of a mystery to the instructors. However they did notice that he was incredibly weak in the sun, and with the fact that he was most likely a first generation between a non-human and human, he was someone who inherited a majority of the weaknesses. The instructors had no idea as to what non-human race the boy inherited as any traits to reveal this were matched with conflicting traits to the races that they originated from, they noticed that he was painfully weak and Holy magic caused him pain despite the fact that it would heal him like the magic should. This itself was something confusing to them, as there was no knowledge of a race that was negatively influenced by Holy magic, but was still healed by it- many were hurt by the magic, but none experienced this phenomena. However as time passed the instructors pushed these questions away, and eventually forgot about them. In the beginning of training the boy was so weak that he couldn¡¯t even keep up with the weakest of his peers, and he would be out of breath after a few steps into the daylight. While now the boy could move and run outside like any other person, he had no real strength in his body during the day- and that weakness was what the second instructor was trying to fix.
To be honest only the higher ups of the church knew about the boys heritage, and as such it was kept a highly guarded secret. Even the instructors didn¡¯t know about it at first as they were not that high on the ladder of the church¡¯s hierarchy- they were only on the low end of the High-Tier. The strongest magic chanters and knights would only take an apprentice after they reached the age when they were in the third group, and even then not all the children were offered to be taken as apprentices, and when the instructors tried to look into the boy¡¯s background as to find out why he was so weak, and what race he was from, they received a warning saying, ¡°Each of the Orphans within the Inner Circle is a refugee from some sort of catastrophe that had destroyed their homes, or made them unable to live outside without the church¡¯s assistance. This boy is no different, and as such you have no need to look into where he came from or what he is.¡± When the boy had first started training he was picked on by not only the instructors, but also the other orphans. He was someone who was quiet and would often be found reading when he had the chance, and as such people saw him as a bookworm and would pick on him. It wasn¡¯t until the third week of training him that the instructors found out that something was wrong with his physique. It wasn¡¯t just that he was weak in comparison to the people around him, it was that he was too weak. Back then when the instructors noticed this they wondered how someone could be so weak as to barely be capable of walking and survive, and how they never noticed.
It wasn¡¯t until the Youth instructor finally had enough of the situation and asked the priests to look at the boy as he thought the child had an illness of some sort, that they were warned once more by the higher ups of the church, however this time they were told about why the child was so weak without being told what the boy was. What the instructors were told was, ¡°Because of his blood this child will need to work 5 times as hard to to something a normal human could do during the day until he gains the resistance to stand in the sun like another person.¡± When the instructors learned about this they stopped picking on what they had seen as a lazy, sickly child, and instead started working to help the boy be able to catch up to his peers with extra exercises. That was about 5 years ago, now the boy was working his hardest to close the gap between him and the other children who trained during the morning hours. And it was slowly closing, as he trained he was slowly becoming stronger and more resistant to the light of day, now instead of being 5 times as weak as the people around him he was only half as strong as them, in other words he would only need twice as long to do what they could do. To the instructors this was a huge success as they adopted training the boy as a pet project of their own. The goal of a teacher is to teach others, to make others stronger in their chosen subjects, and as such training the weak boy in front of them to have the same power and potential of his peers was a challenge that they had seen as worth taking.
By now four hours had passed and the boy had rolled over panting as he sighed, ¡°200.¡± Looking at the sky for a moment before slowly getting up. It was just then that the first of the other orphans stated to arrive as they finished their jogging. Looking at the sweat drenched boy in front of him the instructor couldn¡¯t help but feel a tinge of pride, he had worked hard to figure out how to help this kid become stronger, and never once did the boy complain. Smiling on the inside the instructor spoke with a deadpan look, ¡°Get off your arse Rune, you still have 3 laps to do. If your last you get punishment¡ again.¡± Yelping the black haired boy, Rune, stood up and started sprinting into the distance.
Looking at the now returning children the instructor sighed. He still had a ways to go before Rune would catch up to the others- but by the end of that boys time under his training he would be able to walk outside and have no weakness in the sunlight, but that was something years away at the moment and right now there were other things to work on. As the children sat down, already knowing what to do after the years practicing with the Youth instructor, they started meditating and cultivating their inner power and magic. Rune did this as well, however he had to do it on his own time and would often lose hours of sleep at night as he meditated to supplement what training was lost during the day.
Rune was running around the Inner Circle of the High Church as fast as he could, every day he was the last person to get back, and every day he took the punishment that came from being last. Shuddering he sped up, the surroundings blurring as he ran, each step brought him closer to his goal, and as he ran he managed to pass a few people. Then he ran out of breath and knelt over as he gasped for air, feeling the hateful heat of the sun on his back the boy winced. As he took a few breaths and finally stood back up Rune looked around the empty outskirts of the Inner Circle. With an unhappy grunt he continued running, he had three laps to do and he didn¡¯t want to deal with he instructors over the top punishment game. Running once more Rune didn¡¯t pause as he turned a corner, and without warning he was sent flying, and tumbled across the ground before slaming into a wall. Dazed Rune looked up as he felt three people walk to him, looking at them Rune franticly tried to get up, but his stunned body wouldn¡¯t move as he wanted. It was the three people who picked on him the most, Hob, Joss, and Saerus. Hob and Joss were the lackeys of Saerus, and both were short and unimportant as they only stuck with Saerus because he was stronger then they were. Searus however was someone who was within the top 5 of the group, he had blond hair and hazel eyes that shone with a malevolent light. Saerus was 11 and being a year older then Rune he tried to force him to be his ¡®underling¡¯ when they were younger time back. Rune however, didn¡¯t like the idea of serving under someone, and as such he declined and humiliated Saerus by accident in the process.
Rune finally felt his body reply to his movements and slowly rose, only to kicked by Saerus as Hob and Joss laughed at him as he hit the floor. Kneeling down to Rune Saerus whispered in his ears, ¡°I thought I told you to stop training under the instructor. Do I need to beat it into you~? Your so weak that you¡¯ll never live outside the city- so why don¡¯t you just give up?¡± Without waiting for Rune to reply Saerus grabbed him as he tried to get up and punched him in the stomach. Couching loudly Rune collapsed onto the floor, hearing the mocking laugh of Saerus and his lackeys. Curling up into a ball Rune waited, his eyes filled with rage, and was rewarded for his forethought with multiple kicks. Hob and Joss were laughing loudly as Saerus kicked him in the side several times before laughing once more as he looked down on Rune. ¡°I guess your too stupid to drop out- Well, I suppose it doesn¡¯t matter, someone as weak as you won¡¯t ever become a knight.¡± Mentally Rune agreed with Saerus, he was weak. But one day he would be strong enough to make him cower in fear as he returned the favor. As for being a knight- Rune couldn¡¯t care less. To Rune, knights were untouchable existence that were far beyond his reach, and besides that he had no ambition to become a knight either. Curled up into a ball Rune waited as Saerus taunted him and left, staying curled up for a while longer to make sure he wasn¡¯t going to come back. Slowly getting up Rune grabbed the wall and looked around before he began running again, in his heart he didn¡¯t care about Saerus- he cared about getting stronger. In all the books Rune had read it was said that becoming strong was the best form of revenge, and when revenge was mentioned it was always ¡®best served cold¡¯.
Running around the Inner Circle was one of the few training exercises that Rune enjoyed, save for the fact that he had to encounter Saerus. As he was normally the last student to be doing the basic jogging exercises, he would be able to catch glimpses of Holy knights training themselves and spot the occasional Priest if he as lucky, then he would be able to see them train- and in comparison to what he was doing it made him feel better, and over time he became friendly with some of the Knight¡¯s and Priests. Today however, Rune was not lucky enough to see the residents of the High Church, instead he was alone and soon running his second lap. By just under noon Rune had finished running around the Inner circle and the other orphans had left to spend their free time eating lunch and playing as they had no other obligations to do for the day besides go to classes later in the afternoon.
Finally running to the instructor after finishing his third lap Rune hoped that the man wouldn¡¯t assign something too terrible for him to do like last time. Shuddering Rune remembered the day before when he was told to haul the water tanks across the Inner circle and refill them before returning them to their places. Looking at Rune¡¯s arrival the Middle group instructor looked to the sky and smiled slightly- the boy was faster this time. Not only that but he was able to move without needing to be restored with Holy magic these days. Scratching his ear the instructor beckoned for Rune to follow, bringing the boy to a small building in the back of the Inner Circle. This was the ¡®punishment¡¯ room as Rune thought of it- in reality it was a room filled with holy magic to help heal anyone as they practice inside. Needless to say this room was what gave Rune nightmares in the future.
Picking up a wooden sword the Instructor passed it to Rune before grabbing his own. ¡°Alright Rune. Because you were late today, you have the privilege to spar against me. If you can hit me once in the next two hours, you won¡¯t have any punishment tomorrow should you be last.¡± Eyes widening Rune looked at the instructor in despair. Every time he came to this room he would be forced to fight his instructor, and he had been doing so for the last few years. Normally a human would call this a blessing as the Holy magic in the room constantly healed a person if they were hurt. However to Rune it was different. Holy magic hurt¡. a lot. Every cut, bruise, and broken bone would heal instantly, however Rune still felt the pain of the injuries condensed into a single second as it healed. More often than not the pain was enough to bring him to tears as he was beat on by the instructor who was in charge of him. To be honest Rune didn¡¯t see any improvement in his ability to fight back against the instructors, and because of this he was able to know the gap between their power rather intimately. Looking at the instructor Rune readied his sword and blocked with a hopeless expression on his face, as if defending against an imaginary attack he knew was coming. Only, the attack was real- with a casual strike of his blade the instructor sent Rune flying across the room and slamming into a wall with bone shattering force. With a cry of pain Rune slowly stood up, his body healed instantly by the magic in the room.
He hated this room. Ever since he began training under the instructors he was always brought here to fight them for whatever length of time they wanted him to be their punching bag. In the last few years Rune had experienced combat of almost every kind, from bows to the fist and everything in-between. Rune groaned as he dodged the instructors blade, he couldn¡¯t even block it so the next best thing would be to dodge it and not get hurt in the first place. Unfortunately he was no genius in combat, and after years of fighting he had steadily learned his own method of combat in order to survive the instructor¡¯s over the top abilities. He would avoid any path that the sword could reach with the instructors strikes, and while he was able to avoid being hit, he also was unable to get close enough to hit the man. Narrowing his eyes Rune cursed under his breath, ¡°**** the Instructors never hold back¡¡± and he instinctively jumped back as a sword pierced the air he was standing in a moment ago. He desperately wanted to manage to tie a match against the instructor, but reality was cruel, and in truth the most Rune could do was dodge someone who far outmatched him. Every so often he would make a mistake and be sent flying, and for the next two hours Rune was left to his fate of being a punching bag.

Leaving the room Rune entered into the sunlight once more. He was bone tired and wanted to fall over and sleep, however that would mean that he would miss lunch- and he was starving. Making his way to the orphanages mess hall Rune listened to the voices of people laugh in the distance and grumbled unhappily. It was a this point when Rune was suddenly tackled be a boy with blond hair and gold eyes yelling, ¡°Ruuuunnnneeee~!¡± making a half strangled response Rune forced his friend off of him, panting from the effort. Grinning the boy helped Rune up, ¡°The instructor gave you a long punishment this time, what was it?!¡± Grunting Rune looked at his friend, one of the few people who he cared about in the orphanage, and sighed as he rubbed his neck, ¡°He made me fight him again¡ and he didn¡¯t hold back¡ at all¡¡± Laughing the blond haired boy looked at Rune, ¡°I couldn¡¯t be that bad. I mean your still alive so he had to of held back a little.¡± Grunting unhappily Rune walked deeper into the Inner Circle, heading to the cafeteria with his friend following him. Walking down the hallway Rune rubbed his neck, even though there was no physical injury he could remember how it felt to be hit by the Instructors attacks, and how helpless he was to fight against that man. With a heavy sigh Rune kept walking in silence before his friend started speaking, ¡°So Rune, what do you want to eat?¡° With the skillful change in topic Rune smiled and laughed, ¡°It¡¯s always about food in the end for you isn¡¯t it Akriel? I¡¯m going to grab a sandwich and head to the library- I want to finish reading a book I found.¡± Smiling guiltily Akriel chuckled, ¡°Well we are friends after all. Besides food makes people feel better you know? I¡¯ll meet you in the library as the Knights and Priests are eating. I need to make sure you eat you know~¡± Shaking his head Rune continued to walk beside friend and soon opened the door leading into the Mess Hall.
The Mess Hall was a large room that contained rows of tables for people to eat at and was lit up by the glass windows that reached to the ceiling. The walls were made of finely cut stone that shone white in the daylight, the borders of the walls were carvings depicting legends that had been passed down through the world involving hero¡¯s fighting monsters. The long tables in the Mess Hall were made of the same stone, and with it being a little after lunch a majority of the people eating were Knights and Priests. With Rune entering the room nobody took a second glance at him, as even though it was an unspoken rule that the youth groups were supposed to eat before them, everyone was aware of the fact that Rune was always late to eat. Inside the Mess Hall there was a counter that had a large amount of preserved food that was piled onto trays, the food itself was preserved by magic in order to keep it from rotting, and people would grab some food when they were hungry and eat. Walking up the the counter Rune quickly made himself a sandwich and moved to an empty table to eat. Sitting down Rune watched as his friend, Akriel made a face at him and slipped out of the room gesturing in the direction of the library. With a sigh Rune shook his head, even though Akriel was always around he was someone who most people didn¡¯t notice, and most people included everyone but Rune and a Priest who Akriel brought to Rune to prove that he was real.
Smiling at the memory Rune bit into his sandwich, back then Rune would constantly be with Akriel, however overtime he noticed that other people didn¡¯t see his friend. For example, when Saerus was trying to recruit Rune to be his underling Akriel threw a glass of water at him, and the water sprayed over his pants. After that a few girls walked in and saw Saerus¡¯s state and assumed that he had peed himself, and even now it was a topic that was touchy around him. After that incident Rune had wondered if Akriel was real, as nobody could see him and he had recently read a book about spirits, however he was disproven by his friend when a Priest came by and was able to see him like anyone else. It wasn¡¯t that Akriel couldn¡¯t be seen, it was that he was hard to notice in the first place. Chuckling to himself Rune finished his sandwich and stood up, quietly leaving the laughing Knights and Priests. However upon reaching the door Rune was forced to stop. ¡°OI! Rune! Don¡¯t sneak away like you always do, come over here and sit with us a bit!¡± turning around Rune could see some a group of Knights, the one that called out to him was someone who Rune looked up to like a big brother. The knight was named Abris, and he was a person with bright blood red hair and grey eyes. He stood around six feet tall and was seven years older then Rune, and right now he was grinning as some friends punched him in the shoulder as they joked. While they were called knights, the people at the table were still in training, they only held the name of their professions at the moment.
Smiling Rune headed over to Abris, and sat next to him as the group chattered. ¡°So Rune, how is the youth training? We just had to do dragon drills¡. It took 25 minutes before we ¡®died¡¯ this time¡¡± Abris shuddered along with the rest of the table as they remembered the drill. Looking at the depressed atmosphere Rune remembered what the drills were, and winced as he remembered what he had seen on one particular day. ''Dragon Drills'' were training exercises that would practice the disaster of a dragon attacking and how to survive against the flying reptile. The Teachers would use magic to replicate what a dragon attack would be like on a controlled scale, and with High Priests on standby they would practice fighting an illusionary dragon. This exercise was done every month, and after you ¡®died¡¯ you would be considered out as the teachers creating the illusion only had so much magic power to continuously use. These exercises would last between 5 minute to an hour depending on the luck of the Knight¡¯s and Priest practicing, and in the case of this mornings Dragon Drill the fight lasted a whole 25 minutes. With a slight smile Rune spoke, ¡°I had to do the normal stuff, a few hundred push-ups and 3 laps around the Inner Circle¡ and what the Instructor decided to do for punishment¡¡¡± Wincing the group chuckled, anyone who was under the training instructors thumbs as a child knew that they were fond of over the top punishments for the person who finished last in their exercises as ¡®incentive to do better next time¡¯. In fact the training instructors trained anyone who was accepted to be trained as a potential Knight or Priest, the orphans tend to get a better deal as they usually lived in the Inner Circle longer than anyone else their age. Rune continued talking with Abris and his group for a short while before respectfully nodding his head, ¡°I¡¯m going to the library, good luck in your training~¡± and quietly left the Mess Hall, slipping through the wooden doors like a shadow flickering in the candle-light.
Leaving the Mess Hall Rune smiled, he was happy to have talked with Abris considering that he would often be unable to meet up with him during the day. As he walked Rune bit the inside of his cheek as he reviewed the fight he had with the Instructor earlier in the day, and before he knew it he was at the library door. The inside of the Library was something disorienting to someone who would first enter, it was a building many floors high and there would often be knights and Priests looking for certain books as they travelled between the tall rows of books.
Looking around Rune noticed Akriel sitting at a desk in the corner of the room, reading a thick book about magic. Making his way to his friend Rune looked at the shelves and picked up a few books at random, and then sat down at the same table as Akriel. Looking at the book Rune read the title ¡®Theoretical magic- existence of the elements¡¯ by Aldwin Bastat and tilted his head as he looked at his innocent looking friend. ¡°I¡¯m surprised Akriel, that book is as dry as they come. I mean if this is your first time reading a magic theory book I would say read something else- because its so boring and well known that it is what makes people hate reading magic theory.¡± Jumping Akriel looked at Rune and almost dropped his book, ¡°I almost dropped the book because of you. Besides the school wants us to read this as there is a test in a few weeks.¡± Looking at Akriel quizzically Rune spoke, ¡°There is?¡± With a sigh Akriel looked at his friend, while Rune was a nice person he was also much smarter then most others. ¡°You wouldn¡¯t know as you graduated early. I mean seriously who graduates a 10 year school in only 6? ¡± Shrugging Rune yawned as he opened a book at random, ¡°Meh, I like reading, and before I knew it I graduated.¡± shaking his head Akriel rubbed his forehead. Part of the reason why Rune was bullied was because he graduated early, however he rarely spent extra time training after the Instructors exercises and instead went to the library instead.
Grunting no committedly Rune looked at the title of the book he was reading and smiled, glad to be reading something new. He was reading ¡®History of the World- Lost and Forgotten Races¡¯ by Fethis Belit. Looking at the book Rune started reading at his usual pace as he skimmed over the information and tried to read it. In summary the information was something along the lines of,
| The world is a large place that we are constantly expanding. All the while we wage wars and fight other beings that we discover or have discovered. In the process of this cycle that has continued for all of history I have decided to write about the more rare and some of the unknown races in order to correct misconceptions.
First I will start with my organization of such sentient races, There are Humanoid, Monstrous, and Other. Humanoids are anything that is bipedal, Monstrous are races that resemble more real creatures, but are still capable of sentient thought, and finally there are Other. Other is a category for anything that isn¡¯t in the previous two stated or for races that change between the two (for example: centaurs (page 480)).
In the world of Humanoid races we have several subgroups, Humans (pages 250-299), Demi-humans (page 300-350), and Human-like (pages 351-410). Humans are a bipedal race that is the most widespread of all of the races, except possibly Demi-humans as the two races have similar populations. Demi-humans are humans with animalistic characteristics, for example a person with wings or a person with animal ears would be an example. Lastly there is Human-like races, these are the more confusing races to talk about as they tend to be merged inappropriately with the Demi-human race.
Human-like beings contain non-human characteristics, and in some cases are the closest to Monstrous races. For example, Vampires, Werewolves, Ogres, Trolls, Demons, Angels, and the like will fall into this category. There are many more examples in this category, and they will be located on page 351-410, however I will go in depth about two of the most well known and well mistaken races as examples, further references can be found within the appendix at the back of the book.
Vampires are a race that has no resistance to the sun, or intensive heat for that matter, and have a thirst for blood. However, while this race does desire blood they tend to view it as something similar to a strong wine. As children of the age of 6-9 they exhibit bloodlust and will hunger for blood, often times animals are used for this as they are the most easily accessible sources of blood available for the race. Vampires are often cleric to garlic, however it is not fatal nor is it warding, its just that the strong sent tends to irritate them as they have strong senses. There is no warding affect of waterfalls or bridges of the sort and that is a superstitious rumor. There have been recorded cases of vampires living at the bridge-city of Terth, and they are perfectly healthy citizens of the city. However Vampires do have reactions to silver and iron as they have a blood relation to the Fae (page 375). Holy magic will hurt this race as they are technically considered undead, however there are rare cases of half-breeds that have existed. However these cases are so rare that I am unable to write about them as they are so few and hard to find. Vampires also have innate control over blood magic, and in the more powerful cases they can manipulate blood without being in direct contact with it. These vampires are normally referred to as Elder Vampires due to them often being thousands of years old.
Vampire society differs from place to place in drastic turns. Most are rather moderate society that accept all who wish to live among them, and view blood drinking as an intimate action (like how drinking wine with a loved one would feel). however there are vampires who go mad with their abilities and become ¡°blood fiends¡±. Blood fiends are like the normal vampire, however they will flock to the strongest presence in the area and build city around it as underlings. They are indistinguishable from normal vampires save the fact that they often are incredibly prideful and thirst for power and blood in turn.
The other common yet often mistaken race is that of Werewolves. This race is originally from a group of beings, I do not know if they were wolves that became human or the other way around, however they eventually evolved into what many stories call as mindless killing machines. However this is wrong, Werewolves tend to be thoughtful creatures and family oriented in societies. They tend to take the role of city guards to protect the young, or will work in hospitals to help heal others. They have a better sense of smell then dogs do, and eagle like vision that can be used at will should they need it.
This race is weak to silver and it¡¯s strength will grow with the phases of the moon. While normally rational there have been cases of bloodlust causing a Werewolf to start a rampage, however this is dealt with quickly either by the end of the night, or by it being killed.
Most of the time one is unable to tell if another is a Werewolf as a Werewolf living in human society tends to be someone who is social and well liked by others regardless of their race. Due to this few bother thinking about such people being of a Human-like race and instead think them as rather outgoing, extroverted people... |
Yawning Rune looked away from the book and rubbed his eyes. The introductions to the various races were interesting, and there were well drawn pictures of each race in that was being described in the book next to the page. There was an in depth explanation about the heritage of the races described as well as theories about them and how they came to be. However Rune was rather bored as he read the book, the pace of the reading material was rather slow, and at this rate he would be unable to properly read it. Putting down the book Rune opened another titled ¡®Myths and Legends of the Alitial kingdom¡¯ by Westin Estris. The book wasn¡¯t particularly large, however upon opening it rune was able to look at the sprawling, neat text that lined each page and began reading.
Several hours passed and Rune was still reading the book, his friend Akriel had tried to rouse him from his reading, however Rune was notoriously difficult to bring out of his reading when he enjoyed the book he was reading. Finally putting down his book Rune stretched as his joints popped, and he yawned. Myths and Legends was a rather interesting read about the various dungeons and infamous places that exist in the world
.
The most interesting piece of knowledge was that there was a famous labyrinth that people were still exploring even though it was discovered 500 years ago- and they were only on the first floor. There were hint and leads about the labyrinth being able to go deeper, however no one had ever found the supposed second layer to the labyrinth. Looking outside Rune sighed, the sun was setting and night was begging to make its presence known. ¡°That book took longer then I thought¡¡± Rune muttered as he put away the books he had picked out. In fact he was a little sad as he was unable to finish reading everything that he had picked out. Soon having put everything away Rune made his way to the orphanage, the last thing he wanted was to miss dinner.
A distance away from the city in a dark cave deep in the wilderness the sounds of screams would escape, inside was a workshop with an old man cackling as he worked. This old man was a necromancer, and was in turn taking the lives of travelers to supplement his slowly growing army of the dead. Bound to the table in front of him was an adult man with bloody carvings in his chest, looking at the old man in hatred the bound man cried out once more as pain coursed through his body and he felt death embrace him as he faded away. Cackling madly the necromancer looked at the dead body with a look of bliss, and with a toothless smile he gazed at the city that had cast him out in the distance licking his lips as he thought of all the souls it contained.
Sorry about the long time I took off. College happened, and then I got writers block. I''m trying to make each ''chapter'' of decent quality and am also working on Tales of a Traveler which I am writing the next chapter for. For Sanctum Lost I am trying to make each chapter 10 pages long, and that takes time as I want Quality over Quantity.
-Sorry.
Tell me what you think about the layout of this chapter, I''m trying to make the blocks of text easier to read.
