《Calamity》 Chapter 1 - Important package Chapter 1 Garen watched the crystalized snowflakes as they drifted through the air, careless and free, as if without a single burden in the world. The puffs of frozen water fell like flower pedals, descending upon the human city of Muhandil. Each flake drifted in all directions, blowing in the fierce wind and twirling around like mini cyclones. Garen stood quietly in one corner of the watch tower ¨C a structure built on top of the city defense walls. From within, sentries could watch the outer terrains from a higher angle for any signs of danger. Garen wasn¡¯t on duty; unlike the others currently in the room, he liked spending time in this place to think. This was simply one of the few places where he can find solitude from those that was constantly demanding more from him. And Garen liked solitude when he was thinking. When you¡¯re alone, no one can hurt or betray you. His father had taught him so many things, and then reinforced his teachings by doing what he always preached ¨C by hurting Garen emotionally and physically whenever the chance comes up. They were good but harsh lessons, even if his father, Bernard was considered a low life in everyone¡¯s eye. The snow continued to fall in the winter cold. Sometimes, Garen imagined he was like the snowflakes floating in the wind, a thing without emotion or thought, free from the confines restraining Garen¡¯s life. Then he could finally live¡ He heard noises coming a short distance away, then the wooden door across the room snapped opened. ¡°Garen!¡± Lamberd said, moving his snow covered body into the room. ¡°There you are! The captains been searching for you, he thought you went home already.¡± ¡°Then why did you come looking for me here, it¡¯s obvious he knew I didn¡¯t leave yet,¡± Garen thought to himself. ¡°You should go see the captain right now, the guy seemed off like something is scaring him,¡± Lamberd said. This person was a senior soldier in the city sentry brigade, why he didn¡¯t reach a higher rank is anyone¡¯s guess. Nice man in his own way, the kind of fella a junior soldier would look to when they have questions. Help was always available if you talk to Lamberd but motivation was one quality this senior lacked. Infamous to his peers for his lazy attitude and can¡¯t do ways; it was considered a form of punishment by higher ranked commanders to pair Lamberd with junior soldiers. Life was relatively easy for Garen in the army. As a sentry soldier, they got one of the highest pay grades in the city and a above average chance of promotion. The only demerit that came with the profession is the inherent danger from bandits or war. As fate would have it, the city of Muhandil was located in the outback of the human empire. With barely any traffic from trade and a terrain full of mountains, a normal person would have difficult times crossing the land. The only exciting event that ever occurs in the citizen¡¯s life is the harvest festival each year, sending the people into the streets as they celebrate with food and dancing. ¡°Well?¡± Lamberd asked. ¡°If you stand there any longer, the captain is going to lose it.¡± Garen was annoyed by the demand, especially when he was technically off work, it¡¯s not like this is the first time the captain looked for him when he¡¯s off duty. Garen nodded unwillingly, moving at a quick pace out the tower room. He brushed pass Lamberd and walked out into the snow covered brick floors of the fortification walls. With each step, Garen felt the heat inside his body beginning to leak into the environment, adapting to the winter weather. The captain¡¯s quarter was located in the soldiers barrack in another section of the city, in order to reach it; Garen had to make his way across many twists and turns. Assuming he kept moving at his current pace, he would reach his destination in twenty minutes. It was already a common occurrence for him but he better be ready for a tongue lashing. Being treated like a dog running to its master at a single call was part of the job description. Garen knew what he was signing up for, even if he has to lower himself to such a man like the captain. The pay and job security was something most men would fight for if given the opportunity. ¡°There you are! Where were you?¡± Captain Ragard lifted his fat finger, jabbing into Garen¡¯s chest as he spoke in his disgusting attitude. Garen¡¯s body stiffened, making sure he didn¡¯t let any hint of anger or dislike show in his face. Giving his usual expressionless face as he explained his reasons, giving Captain Ragard what he would expect out of his personal servants. Without any hint, Ragard¡¯s hand slapped Garen across the face, the force from the impact made a noticeable impact sound. Captain Ragard growled slightly with a angered red face as if disappointed by the lack of reaction from Garen. ¡°Listen carefully,¡± Ragard hissed in a snake like tone. ¡°There is an important job I need you to do. Just like the jobs before, I want you to deliver a package to the city across the mountains. You better not mess it up; it is worth more then what you would make in months. Understand?¡± Garen nodded in acknowledgement. Captain Ragard studied him for a moment, his rugged face returning into a calmer shade. Finally, he looked away from Garen, implying the meeting was over. Garen was used to these meetings and the unreasonable requests made to him by the captain. Abuse of power and corruption was like a tradition in the sentries rank, being stuck in the outback of the empires territory didn¡¯t help when higher authorities didn¡¯t give a care. Making his way to the secretary outside the room, Garen picked up the wooden box that he was supposed to deliver from the young female. The lady in her green dress and blonde hair was absolutely gorgeous, no doubt selling her body to the higher ups in order to keep this job. As the wooden box changed hands to Garen, her eyes did not even make eye contact, acting like he did not even exist to showcase her status. ¡°It¡¯s as they say, similar people flock together.¡± Garen wanted to say this to the women but kept it inside, knowing the problems that would follow was not worth it. The sun has already set for the evening by the time he walked out of the building; darkness shrouded the lifeless streets as civilians made their way home for the day. Following the ritualistic habit ingrained into Garen¡¯s leg, the familiar sound of drunkards welcomed him as he caught sight of Gabbits pub. Ignoring the strong scent of alcoholic beverage permeating from the wooden building, he made his way toward the side alley where the entrance to his accommodation was located. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source.¡°Garen my boy!¡± The pub owner shouted through the wooden window. Broct, the snitch, the broker, one of the many names he gained from his side business. Broct was a small man if you compared him to the average native born, yet he had the strongest voice in the entire city. This stubby man wasn¡¯t born in Muhandil nor raised here in fact, only settling down in this city after being exiled from his family. With nothing but his own personal savings, he had to spend every dime to his name when he bought the pub off the previous owner. Fates been good to this foreigner, gambling everything he had into this establishment and quickly becoming one of the most popular places to get drunk. As business picked up over the years, he even bought the buildings next door, expanding his business to include lodging for travelers. Adding to his luck, Broct already reaching 40 years of age, managed to wed one of his pub wenches that was half his years. As if the gods themselves was looking out for him, his first wife passed away years ago, leaving only his daughter and him, so there wasn¡¯t any complication when he brought the idea of wedding another to the church. Already unhappy from his meeting with the captain, Garen wanted to ignore Broct, but he knew better than to offend his landlord. ¡°Evening Broct, how¡¯s business?¡± Garen shouted back. Breaking into a smile when Garen replied, Broct quickly made his way towards the front door. ¡°Oh you know, just the usual. You should come inside and have a drink too!¡± Broct spoke this as if giving an order to a subordinate instead of speaking between equals. Garen knew what the man really wanted. It was well known Captain Ragard ran a business smuggling artifacts into the black markets, it just so happens the person doing the delivery was the one and only, Garen himself. ¡°A man can never keep a secret when they are drunk,¡± Garen¡¯s father had always taught him. Garen knew Broct wanted information about what¡¯s inside the package but even Garen didn¡¯t have a clue; the lid was sealed tight with metal nails. Competition between smugglers are intense in this region, any leak in information can mean a major loss in profit or an ambush by bandits on the road. ¡°Its fine, I was just about to head home for the night. I had a rough day at work today so I¡¯m really tired,¡± hoping such a lame excuse would be enough to ward off Broct. ¡°Nonsense, a man can never be too tired for a drink!¡± Broct reached out his hand, grabbing Garen on the shoulder as if making sure he couldn¡¯t escape. The stubby pub owner practically dragged Garen inside with his inhuman strength, forcing him to sit in the depths of the pub. Turning his ugly head, Broct faced the bar table where his wife managed the drinks, ¡°Bring him the usual,¡± Broct shouted. His wife Marlene understood immediately, like two partners working together in order to finish a job. It wasn¡¯t the first time Broct wanted Garen to spill the beans by forcing him to drink, the first time this happened, Garen lost the content of his delivery when he was on the road. Three months¡¯ worth of salary ended up as compensation and a serious tongue lashing was what welcomed him after escaping from the bandits that robbed him. ¡°Very well, if you want to see it so badly, I¡¯ll let you see it.¡± Garen moved his package atop the table as he focused his attention in finishing his drink. ¡°By the gods, what is this stuff I¡¯m drinking?¡± Garen thought after taking a sip. The longer he stayed here, the more likely something unfortunate might happen. Ignoring the objection of his stomach, Garen continued to swallow every bit of the foul liquid. As if reading Garen¡¯s mind, ¡°What¡¯s that box you are holding there, my boy?¡± Broct leaned forward as he spoke. ¡°Did that Ragard want you to go on of those errands for him again?¡± Showing an innocence face as if he didn¡¯t care what Garen¡¯s reply was. But Garen knew better, ¡°No, it¡¯s just something a colleague asked me to pass on to his relative across the mountains.¡± Garen spoke in a tone as if the matter wasn¡¯t important. If he showed any sign of panic, it would be a quick give away that it was important, then word would spread like wildfire. ¡°Oh, mind if I have a look then? I¡¯m sure your friend wouldn¡¯t mind if a curious old fella like me takes a look now would he?¡± Broct moved his hands aiming for the box. After spending a few minutes inspecting the object, Broct realized unless he yanked apart the lid with something sturdy, he won¡¯t be able to look inside at the contents. Garen broke into a grin as he finished the last of his ale. ¡°Old fool, you think I would dare walk into a dragons nest unless I was certain?¡± Garen thought to himself. ¡°Well, I appreciate the free drink but I must get going. Got a long trip tomorrow you know.¡± Garen stood up as he says this, knowing he had won this encounter. Broct wasn¡¯t pleased by this situation but even so, he did a good job hiding it as he continued to smile while speaking, ¡°Very well boy, best not to keep you then but there¡¯s word that trouble is on the road recently.¡± Securing his prize with both hands as he smiled, Garen slowly walked through the room full of men and women laughing as they enjoyed the alcohol and atmosphere of the place. Certain Broct¡¯s warning was just a last attempt to scare him with those parting words. Tired and exhausted, Garen shoved his boots into the snow covered alley as he made his way to his place in the alleyway. An old wooden door welcomed him, the rust apparent on the hinges, indicating the long years of neglecting care. Struggling to find his key and balance the wooden box with one hand, his patience was growing thin. ¡°Argh, why can¡¯t things go smoother today,¡± Garen mutters in a low voice, relieving his built up stress. As he walked in, the door made a loud creaking sound as it swung open from the chilling wind. Dropping the package without care onto the floor, he slammed the door behind him, only silence and darkness of the room welcomed him without a hint of comfort. Garen didn¡¯t care about anything at this point as he made his way toward the old wooden bed in the corner, the only place in the entire city where can truly rest. ¡°It¡¯s been rough this night and tomorrow will just get worse.¡± Garen muttered to himself as he drifted into slumber. Discomfort filled Garen¡¯s body as drops of sweat covered his face and body. ¡°Ugggh¡ nooo¡. please stop!¡± These words unconsciously leaked out of his mouth. Throughout the night, images of destruction and death of entirely unknown species played out in his mind, paralyzing his body as if he was reliving the very memories of those in his dreams¡ End chapter 1 Chapter 2 - The answer Chapter 2 Garen awoke with a hangover to the unpleasant and unwelcoming sound of the churches bell chimes, indicating the suns rising. You would expect bells to sound merrily but there was no happiness in Garen¡¯s mind regarding this tune. The bell was locally produced, crudely forged iron from the local blacksmiths, whom didn¡¯t have a clue about the art of sound tuning. As he emerged from his slumber (his mind still foggy from the previous evenings ale), Garen was welcomed by a misty chill enveloping his body as he shivered from the sweat clinging to his clothing. Nightmares ravished his nights constantly through the years as he struggle to come to terms with the death of his mother and the scorn given to him for carrying the ¡®Kindred¡¯ house name. But last night was different, ¡°What was that? Those feelings, it¡¯s like I was experiencing it for real.¡± Groaning miserably into his welcoming pillow, his nose picked up the sweet scent of bacon and bread floating into his room as his stomach rumbled with hunger. Mustering his strength despite the protests his sleepy body made, Garen pulled himself out of bed as he made his way toward the source of the scent. ¡°It¡¯s about time you woke up, you¡¯re such a pig you know that?¡± Standing in front of the stove in the Gabbits pub was a girl that has barely made it into adulthood. ¡°Why are you staring at me, do I have something on me?¡± She spoke to Garen in a familiar tone and a questioning eye. ¡°No it¡¯s nothing; I¡¯m just a bit dazed from the alcohol that I had last night.¡± Garen seated himself beside her. ¡°Your parents must have given me something really strong last night, I only had one cup but I feel like I drank a whole barrel.¡± Garen spoke as if looking for sympathy from her. ¡°Serves you right for having such a weak alcohol tolerance,¡± handing a scrumptious looking plate of bacon and egg to Garen. ¡°You know pops never liked it when you decided to go work as a soldier, he always complained the soldiers of the empire only know how to fight and squabble over women. Then eventually they would just die, leaving their family penniless and alone on the streets.¡± The young girl lectured him like a teacher would on a daily basis. ¡°Also do not call Marlene as my parent, she¡¯s only a few years older than me you know!¡± Garen wanted to argue back but knew it was best to finish his meal first. The young woman with her long red hair and green eyes was named Crystal; a childhood friend of Garen¡¯s. The two had known each as long as they can remember in their memories. The daily ritual of the two close friends had always remained the same. Crystal would cook breakfast in the morning and Garen would come in, half asleep to get lectured by her as he ate everything on his plate, it¡¯s not a bad situation for Garen. At the tender age of eight, Garen¡¯s mother had passed away early in her years from the grief and sadness of their family name, leaving him alone with a father that was never around. Once a while, his father would drop in only to be half drunk and penniless. Struggling on his own to make ends meet, Garen worked hard in order to prove himself to his employers. It¡¯s not easy for a child to find work in this world, especially when your father had a reputation of a disgraced master swordsman. ¡°The job is not bad, I get paid well for the work I do. It¡¯s not like I¡¯m stealing it off people.¡± Garen shot back at Crystal after his plate was empty of food. ¡°Oh so that¡¯s why you always run errands for that corrupted captain of yours, everyone knows he¡¯s a smuggler. If he could sell his own mother, I¡¯m sure he would do it in an instant.¡± Crystal eyed him with a smirk, knowing full well Garen wouldn¡¯t have a comeback for that because it was the truth. ¡°Look Crystal, I need this job, how else am I supposed to pay for my expenses?¡± Garen replied in a defeated voice with his hands out. ¡°And please don¡¯t say there are other jobs I can do, you know those don¡¯t pay nearly as well and enough to cover the rent on my room. If I miss even a months¡¯ worth of rent, your pops would have me out on the streets in a moment¡¯s notice. Besides, you know very well the fastest way I can achieve my dream of redeeming my family name is to work for the empire.¡± Finally relenting when the subject of her father was brought up, Crystal quietly picked up the empty dish from his table. Noticing the tense atmosphere brought on by her silence, Crystal wanted to change the subject because she understood Garen truly did care for her. ¡°Oh yes, I wanted to ask you what did you get me for my birthday next week? Also, you better take me out for dinner; I expect something special this year since I am officially old enough to take part in the magician¡¯s exam!¡± Crystal spoke in a cheerful voice. Garen sat in his seat dumbfounded at himself for not remembering such a important date. Crystal had been constantly badgering him for months about her birthday this year, yet he did not realize the issue last night. Gathering his wits knowing the fore coming storm from his reply, ¡°I¡¯m going to be away for a week, I just received an order to deliver something to the neighboring city.¡± Garen squeezed the words out in a mutter, expecting the fabric of reality to unfold any moment. Crystal froze instantly in her track as her fists tightened into a ball. ¡°Do whatever you want you idiot, what¡¯s so important about a family name when you just ignore everyone around you!¡± Crystal shouted in an angry voice then stormed into the back room, leaving Garen alone in the main dining hall. Out of Garen¡¯s sight, Crystal quietly wept tears of sadness at his friend¡¯s foolishness. ¡°I¡¯m such an idiot, why did I go and mention that,¡± Garen mutters in a low voice to himself. Realizing he royally messed up; Garen had no choice but leave the issue at hand and not pursue her for the time being. ¡°I¡¯ll need to make up for this after I come back.¡± Garen sighed as he headed back to his room. The trip across the mountain roads will not be a easy one, especially in the winter seasons when the weather becomes so unpredictable. Gathering the necessary supplies for his trek across the mountain roads, Garen soon realized a major problem; the wooden boxed package was too big for him to carry with only his hand. ¡°Damn, what am I supposed to do, I can¡¯t exactly go back to the captain and tell him I can¡¯t do the job. I¡¯d be lucky if he only yelled at me, if worse, I¡¯d be relieved of my post!¡± Garen wanted to slap himself as he walked back and forth trying to think of a solution. ¡°Come on Garen, you¡¯ve never let something this simple stop you before, why start now. If I want to raise my head high as a member of the ¡®Kindred¡¯ house, there¡¯s still a long road ahead of me and many hurdles to overcome!¡± Spending the next hour contemplating possible solutions, Garen¡¯s thought came up blank. Tired and thirsty, he sat down on his bed, eyeing the wooden box on the floor and wondering what was inside. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. ¡°Release me¡ release me¡¡.¡± Garen jumped at the sudden whispering voice in his ear, wondering who else was in the room with him. Agitated at the unknown voice, Garen readied his body for combat as he looked around the room. Minutes passed as he scanned the room for the tiniest hint of movement but no one was there, not even a shadow¡. ¡°Come on Garen, you must have imagined it. The stress must be getting to your head.¡± He muttered to himself in reassurance. A chime of the church bell knocked him back into reality, realizing it was already getting late into the morning. The day has already started with the sun shining bright in the sky and not a hint of a storm coming. If he didn¡¯t head out soon, it would be too late and he will have to postpone his plans till tomorrow. Ignoring the problem at hand, Garen lifted the box with both hands as he carried his supplies on his back. Making his way out into the main street, men and women littered the streets with life, a complete opposite to the emptiness of yesterday night. Ignoring the crowds, he squeezed passed vendor stalls and citizens of all ages, each going about their business for the day. Garen intentionally walked toward the city guards, hoping to avoid the line ups that formed as merchants and travelers leave through the city gates. Upon reaching the old iron defense gate, a friendly looking young soldier walked towards Garen with a hand waving in the air. ¡°Morning Garen, what are you doing here so early?¡± the young man asked with a smile. ¡°Just following orders from the captain, need to deliver this package to someone in the neighboring city,¡± Garen replied as he stopped in front of the young man. ¡°But Colin, why are you on gate duty, weren¡¯t you part of the scouting party today?¡± Garen asked in a wondering tone but something else quickly took hold of his attention. Further back from where Colin stood, another soldier was riding on a horse used primarily for scouting missions; this scene gave Garen the answer to his problem of transporting his luggage through the mountain. The young man around his age made a flushed face as he answered Garen¡¯s previous question, ¡°I asked to be transferred to this post, and you remember the girl I told you about before? I found out she worked around the corner as a seamstress. I was hoping my chance will be higher if I get to meet her more often.¡± Garen felt like laughing his guts out but knew better then to upset Colin. Having more people on your good side tended to be helpful when a favor is needed. ¡°Hey Colin, didn¡¯t you mention your uncle was in charge of the sentry stables?¡± Garen asked in excitement. Colin was confused by the sudden question about his uncle but answered anyway, ¡°yes, the old man been with the job for the past 10 years, he¡¯s practically living with them.¡± Delighted by the answer, Garen got straight to the point. ¡°Colin, I need a favor from you, help me get a horse from your uncle. Please, you owe me from before remember?¡± Making an uncomfortable face, Colin hesitated in thought until Garen brought out his finishing move. ¡°If you get the horse for me, I¡¯ll help set up a date with that girl you wanted so much.¡± Garen spoke with a sinister smile across his face. Colin did not need any more encouragement at this point; the guy literally sprinted toward the stable across the street. Garen relaxed his body as he settled himself on top of a pile of packed snow; waiting patiently for Colin to bring him his ride. After a good while, Colin finally returned with what Garen wanted, a mare with a brownish tinge in her coloration was following closely behind the young man. ¡°My uncle said she¡¯s the best in the stable, will get you there and back in no time.¡± Colin bragged as he handed the harness over to Garen. ¡°Don¡¯t forget what you promised, I expect you to come back quickly with her help.¡± Colin spoke in demanding voice. At that moment, he really wanted to laugh at his colleague but stopped because he felt like a villain in the way he was taking advantage of Colin¡¯s feelings. ¡°Don¡¯t worry lover boy; I¡¯ll be back in no time if I have this beautiful steed, it will only take a week instead of two on foot, you know? Then I¡¯ll work my magic and get you two love birds in bed without a hitch.¡± Garen spoke in a teasing tone as Colin¡¯s face turned red from embarrassment and anger. ¡°And I¡¯ll be damned if I waste any more time, with this horse I can make it back in for Crystal¡¯s birthday!¡± Garen inner happiness exploded from giddy joy. ¡°heeahh¡± Garen shouted as he nudged the horse with his foot, riding out of the city in style and speed, the package tied securely to the buttocks of the horse. Garen felt amazing from the excitement of riding at the speed he was going; it wasn¡¯t common for an average civilian or soldier to get the chance to ride a horse. The expense of caring for the animal was far too costly and time consuming for someone like him. There was the option of renting a horse from a private stable in the city but the price involved was more then what Garen made in a month. By night fall, Garen had already crossed more distance than what he would have on foot in two days. Moving across hills and forest lands, Garen enjoyed the lands scenery all the more compared to his previous trips. Knowing the likelihood of scoring another favor like this will not come easily with Colin. Along the way, the rare sight of merchants and their caravan added to the experience and his enjoyment. It¡¯s not always wise to be traveling alone in the wilderness; sometimes even the strongest may need assistance. This was how life should be, free from the whims of others and doing what you wished. That¡¯s how Garen felt at this moment and also the reason he could still put up with the constant insults. There was no pleasure in his line of work, it was exactly as Crystal said, there are other jobs out there but none gave the same amount of pay and freedom like a soldier had. It was also the easiest way for him to reach his goal of restoring his family name. Garen had set up camp that night next to the road as beast and man huddled together next to the flames. The bon fire burned with welcoming warmth, acting as a beacon of life in the desolate cold. It was simply safer this way; you may never know what roamed the woods in these lands so close to the frontier. Unknown to Garen, another presence lurked through the trees, stalking him, feeling him, readying to jump at its prey in a moment¡¯s notice. End chapter 2 Chapter 3 - Fight the shadow! Chapter 3 Garen rummaged through his bag as he sorted through his supplies for food. ¡°I should have brought something else; having only bread is going to make me feel sick.¡± Garen sighed as he looked at his dinner. ¡°Next time I better ask Crystal to help me with the supplies,¡± Garen thought as he took a bite but flinched from how hard the bread was. ¡°Dammit, it¡¯s bad enough this weather is getting worse. Now I¡¯m also stuck hugging this horse that smelled like hay stack and eating stale bread as hard as a rock.¡± As if noticing Garen¡¯s remark, the horse actually stood up and made a whinny sound. ¡°What, did it actually understand me?¡± Garen thought as he looked up facing his companion. Dumbfounded, Garen was actually about to apologize when he heard the rustling sound of branches behind him. ¡°Something¡¯s out there!¡± Realizing the horse wasn¡¯t reacting to him but to whatever was coming their way, Garen turned his head to see what it was. To his shock a shadowed figure at least double his height was slowly making its way towards them from the woods. Alarmed by the intruder, Garen reflexively stood up, sheathing his sword and readied his body for combat. ¡°Who¡¯s there? Show yourself!¡± Garen shouted. But no answer came, instead the figure stopped just before the moonlight could reach its body. ¡°Answer me this instance or I will consider you an enemy!¡± Garen made his words seem threatening but inside, he felt horrified. ¡°What is that thing; it¡¯s at least double my height. If I made my stance here alone, the chance of me winning is slim or none at all. I¡¯d be lucky if I can get away with only a scratch!¡± Garen wanted to flee at that instant but soon realized it was no longer an option for him. Maybe it was animal instinct, or maybe just fear, his horse did not even hesitate in her actions. Within seconds, she ripped apart her tree tied harness with her teeth, the very same sturdy leather harness that would be enough to lift Garen up a tree if needed. Like a mouse fleeing from a cat in fear, the horse that Garen had spent the entire day riding had abandoned him without any care. Galloping at a unbelievable pace down the road, the horse headed back in the general direction of Muhandil. Garen was dumbfounded as he stood there, watching his one-time companion continuing in her trot without as much as a glance back towards him, ¡°So much for the best horse in the stable!¡± Garen screamed toward the fading image of the horse. ¡°When I get back home, I¡¯ll be sure to have a few words with Colin!¡± vowing to himself as he focused his attention back towards the intruder. ¡°huhuhuh, Yor pet leave yooo,¡± the gigantic shadow spoke in a mocking tone as it continued to laugh at Garen¡¯s misfortune. Not daring to reply from the taunts sent his way, Garen instinctively began to slowly step backwards in order to put as much distance between them. As if fear itself had manifested into the winter air, the intruder hastily advanced towards him. Free from the cover of darkness. Garen could finally see the identity of his foe as the moonlights ray illuminated the shadowy figure. Standing at double Garen¡¯s height and with muscles bigger than anything he had ever seen, stood a creature like a moving mountain itself. Commonly known as a mountain Ogre by those with the knowledge, mere sightings of such a being is enough to incite panic to an entire city. The first thought that came to his mind was ¡°why?¡± It was common knowledge mountain Ogres lived in this region but they normally inhabited the land further north and never ventured far from their caves. So why did this lone Ogre show up here? Recalling his memories, there hasn¡¯t been a documented Ogre meeting for decades according to elder Nirin, one of the few people in Garen¡¯s life that he respected and liked. ¡°Remember child, never venture past the Grand Ravine that marked the edge of the empires border. You will be safe as long you stay on the southern side of the ravine where foul creatures never venture past.¡± A lesson taught to Garen by the elder in one of his many visits with his now deceased mother. ¡°I need to flee! There¡¯s no way I can win against this thing alone. Even the army needed a full platoon to effectively slay one of these things.¡± Garen warned himself as fear blossomed inside his body. ¡°No run, yor can¡¯t get away. Yor fill Grot belly tonight.¡± The ogre spoke as it slowly raised its arm over its head, readying to smack down on its prey. Feeling his leg had better sense than his head at the time, Garen didn¡¯t need to think. Leaving everything to instinct, he dodged the oncoming punch of the ogre as it swings past him. ¡°Grrr, stay still huma!¡± The ogre roared with saliva flying through the air, clearly angered by Garen¡¯s action. Noticing his chance, Garen dashed towards his luggage, grabbing the boxed package and anything else within reach. With lightning speed, Garen ran as hard as he could in the same general direction his horse had earlier. Within moments, the ogre has regained its focus, giving chase with both hands reached out, attempting to grab its prey into a deathly hold. The following scene was terrifying enough that Garen would never forget this encounter in his life. The Ogre had relentlessly chased after Garen for hours through the mountain landscape, ignoring the snow covered terrain like it was nothing. The only thing keeping Garen alive was thanks to his quick wits and the ability to out maneuver the lugging giant. If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement. ¡°Ogres are sturdy and durable but they are terrible at handling fast change in directional movements. So make a lot of quick turns if you are fleeing for your life,¡± one of the many lessons taught by elder Nirin. Each time as Garen was just about to fall into the Ogres grasp, he would make a sudden dash in a different direction. Ogre kind could easily outpace humans in a straight run by using its long chubby legs but due to their low intellect, they needed a noticeable amount of time processing information if it occurred too quickly. The extra few seconds that the Ogre wasted in order to refocus, gave Garen a good enough advantage to save his life, despite some near death encounters when he timed his turns incorrectly. This game of cat and mouse continued till sun rise, only coming to an end when Garen made a wrong turn and was finally cornered against a cliff facing the Grand Ravine. Normally Garen would not have made such a mistake but he was already exhausted from the unrelenting assault of his foe. Realizing there was no place left to run; Garen¡¯s body began to shake uncontrollably from fear. Drenched in sweat as he constantly gasped for air, ¡°Please god if you are out there, help me!¡± Garen begged to the heavens. Behind him was an inhuman mountain Ogre, ready to slaughter him for food. Facing in front of him was a ravine so deep, it felt like it reached into the very heart of the planet. It did not matter what choice Garen made at this point, either option was hinting certain death. ¡°What am I supposed to do? If I try jumping down the cliff, I¡¯ll be certain to be crushed from the impact! There¡¯s no other choice, I can only fight if I want to live!¡± Garen relaxed his body for battle but suddenly realized something unbelievable in his mind. Garen was still holding onto the boxed packed that captain Ragard had ordered him to deliver! ¡°What am I doing still holding onto this thing when I¡¯m about to be killed?¡¯ Garen didn¡¯t hesitate in his decision even though he realized if by the smallest chance that he lived through this ordeal, he will no doubt lose his job as a sentry soldier. Focusing his strength, Garen threw the package with all his might over the ravine without any regret. ¡°I cannot believe I kept carrying that around, I didn¡¯t even know what was inside, yet I risked my life for something that I didn¡¯t even own.¡± Garen thought to himself in self-pity. His foe has already reached where he stood with both fists tightened and ready to slam into his body. Garen had nothing left to do but to steel his resolve and fight. Brandishing his sword, Garen tightened his grip on the hilt for the impending battle. ¡°Come here you disgusting piece of flesh!¡± I am Garen¡ Garen Kindred! First of my name and I am no food!¡± Shouting with so much ferocity, even his foe was startled for a second at the intensity of his words. ¡°Roooaarrrrrrr¡± the Ogre¡¯s anger intensified to the point that even its skin began to turn red as the two made contact. Garen stood his ground deflecting blow after blow with his sword to no avail. With each hit of the Ogre intense attack, the sharpness in his blade continued to dull against the thick hide. ¡°I will not die!¡± Garen shouted. Minutes later, the once sharp edges of the blade have become scrap metal, dents and cracks apparent all over. With no other option left for Garen, he lunged forward against his opponent, dodging the oncoming punch and piercing the tip of his sword into the Ogres belly hide. ¡°Rharhaaa, weak huma try to hurt Grot.¡± The ogre laughed in amusement as it grabbed the blade with its hand, snapping the metal like nothing. ¡°This is it; even my sword is no more.¡± Garen thought to himself as he held the hilt of his now broken weapon. Garen struggled and flailed with his body as he was lifted into midair, coming into close contact with the ogre¡¯s mouth. ¡°No I do not want to die!¡± Garen screamed with tears in his eyes and the feeling of wetting his lower parts. Unknown to Garen in his panicked state, the skin of the Ogres face was much thinner compared to the rest of its body. If aimed at, it was even possible to penetrate into the skull with his damaged sword. In one of his random slashes during his struggle to break free, Garen threw his weapon out of panic, piercing into the left eye of the Ogre. Blinded by rage as blood poured out of its eye sockets and the immense pain not commonly felt in its life, the Ogre slammed Garen into the ground. Bruised and frightened as pain lanced through his injuries, Garen could only crawl on the ground towards the edge of the cliff as the Ogre refocused on him. Images of his life flashed across Garen¡¯s mind, both the good and the bad. Knowing the impending gruesome fate awaiting him if he stayed put, Garen used the last of his strength in his bloodied arms, pushing himself over the cliff to meet his demise. Midair, Garen could clearly see the Ogre in all its rage looking straight at him atop the cliff. ¡°Ha, dam beast. Even if I die I won¡¯t give you the pleasure¡.¡± Garen¡¯s thought wavered as he began to lose consciousness. All the while his body continued to plunge toward the depths of the Grand Ravine into the heart of the darkness. End Chapter 3 Chapter 4 - Invasion Chapter 4 Garen stood alone in the unending darkness, feeling neither warm nor cold as if all emotions dissipated from his mind and body. ¡°Do you want to live?¡± A voice echoes into Garen¡¯s mind. Unable to comprehend the situation, Garen couldn¡¯t make out a reply as he continued looking into the unknown. ¡°Answer me mortal, do you want to live! The voice this time was louder and dominating. Feeling a forceful energy compelling him to answer, Garen could only utter a murmur of agreement. Seemingly pleased by Garen¡¯s answer, the voice no longer returned, leaving him alone in the void. Memories of all types played out in Garen¡¯s mind, his time with his loving mother, periods of sadness mixed with hate for his father, and the longing for those close to him in his times of need. Such scenes continued to show itself repeatedly as the passage of time moved forward. Back in reality, his tattered and broken body laid limp on the cold damp ground without motion, as if devoid of life in its unmoving state. Pools of blood formed around, staining the dirt and debris littering nearby in a crimson red. Swirls of energy floated in midair around his crippled body, slowly increasing in volume as the seasons changed. Years came and went; soon five years have passed since Garen¡¯s disappearance in the eyes of those that knew him. Deep below the Grand Ravine of the northern region, a bright light glistened in the darkness as if a star had descended from the sky. No one could explain the reasoning behind this strange phenomenon nor could they investigate it. Rumors spread over the years as travelers and merchant passed the word on in social gatherings. Each time growing in exaggeration as it crosses a new mouth. ¡°Have you ever heard of the fallen star in the north?¡± A merchant whispered to his companions sitting near him in the tavern. ¡°Yes, they say it¡¯s because the demons trapped the star there with foul magic.¡± Another person answered back as he ate his food. ¡°I concur; the demon army from the north is so powerful that I wouldn¡¯t be surprised if they could do it.¡± An older woman murmured in another corner of the table, reluctant to say anymore from the fear she held of the north region. ¡°Blast those demons, what is the empire doing? We¡¯ve been fighting them for the past five years and losing ground with each passing day.¡± A dwarf shouted in anger as he slammed his cup on the table, clearly drunk from the alcohols. ¡°Shhh, you mustn¡¯t speak so loud, what if someone from the army hears you and report you to the empire¡¡± The old women warned his friend as she readied herself to leave. ¡°So what if they hear, everyone is already talking about it. Those demons just shows up one day up in the north, then invaded the empire in mass and destroying everything in its path. And the empire has done nothing useful but let one kingdom fall after another,¡± screamed the dwarf, startling everyone currently in the pub with them. ¡°But how can you blame only the empire, the dwarves and elves are just as helpless in these dark times. Don¡¯t forget the church is keeping their mouth shut too,¡± A young man shouted toward the dwarf from the other end of the room. What followed soon after was what you would expect in a typical tavern full of individuals drunk on alcohol. Chairs went flying, tables got turned, and men fought each other with their fists to relieve their anger and their stress. Such conversations played out constantly across the lands as the empire and its allies continued waging war against a unknown force. Many commoners believed these beings were demons called forth by the dark arts but only a select few in the higher hierarchy knew the truth. Everything started five years in the past, just after Garen went missing. In the northern outskirts of the empires domain, an invasion of never before seen in size and brutality took place. ¡°This world belongs to us now, we the abyss kind will conquer everything!¡± These were the first words spoken by some of the leaders in the first wave of attacks. Led by powerful forces in the shadow, hordes after hordes of otherworldly creatures rampaged through the lands, destroying cities and slaughtering any that crossed their path. ¡°Someone please save us! My child is dying, please someone help!¡± These were just a few of the many screams and pleas for help of those left behind, some unable to flee in time or due to certain circumstances and many were simply too weak to escape. Those that somehow did manage to flee the northern regions in time, brought words of terror to the rest of the world. In quick succession, multiple vassal kingdoms of the empire were conquered in record breaking time. In retaliation to the threat, the emperor and his council sent word to every controlling power in the continent, and conscripted every able body men and women for war. Within a months¡¯ worth of time, the empire has amassed a force ten thousand strong. Leading the frontal assault was a seasoned group comprising of the strongest elite knights and magicians within the empires land. It would be no exaggeration to call this special platoon the core of humanities strength as each member of this frontal assault force was famed and seasoned warriors, capable of holding their grounds no matter the situation. This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it. Battle after battle, warriors and magicians alike fought valiantly in the forefront, pushing the invaders back through the north and into the uninhabited glacial ice lands. Supported by volleys of projectiles released by siege weapons, bodies continued to pile high in the dirt and ice as the invading army took enormous loses from the empires might. Victory was within the grasp of the empire as the fleeing invaders scatter in all direction back into the mountainous ice lands. Yet the unthinkable happened, just before the final battle could take place, a unknown gigantic sized beast descended from the sky - this beast was later recorded as a disaster class abyss creature by scholars. Confused by the sudden appearance of the dangerous unknown entity, orders were sent out to all platoons at the command of the coalition General. But this was the biggest strategic mistake they could have done¡ Fully aware of the enemy¡¯s movements, the leviathan class creature with bee like appendages let loose rays of destruction from its mouth and single handedly decimated the brave warriors of the empires army. Bodies and smoke littered the terrain but even the unmoving dead bodies were not left to rot. Fleshes were ripped apart to feed the creatures from the abyss and the still living survivors unlucky enough to be captured were brought further into the north, never to be seen by their friends and family. Night after night, the survivors took heavy loses as they retreated back to the nearest fortress for safety, losing more men and women as they struggled for their lives. In no time, the abysmal creatures of all shapes and sizes pressed their invasion back into the heart of the empires territory, reaching as far as the city of Larkal - one of the biggest settlements and trading hub in the central region. If the city walls were to be breached, the empire would have lost around forty percent of its land and strength. Leaving one of its most important strategic locations in enemy hands and opening up the way to the rest of the continent. Feeling the threat has reached their own borders, Elves and Dwarves alike gathered for the first time in history to aid the humans. Marching an army so great and diversified, they were able to halt the enemy from conquering the city of Larkal. From this point onward, every battle was a fight of attrition in the coming months as each side fought to gain even the smallest amount of territory. It wasn¡¯t until the arch mage Falus of the human empire, Silver arrow of the elven race, and Thunder hammer of the dwarven race joining the battlefield, were the tides changed. In a combined effort of these three individuals, they single handedly destroyed the gigantic disaster class creature in the sky but only at the cost of their very lives. Forever remembered as the strongest of their generation, they were honored by every witness in the battlefield. Though some argued they were cowards for not being there in the initial defense against the abyss legion, none can deny what they had accomplished. In the aftermath following the death of both sides main fighting strength, small skirmishes erupted across the landscape. No longer a organized army, the invading creatures scattered like the wind into the continent on all direction, only retaining a quarter of its original number as it retreated back into hiding. Word of the enormous defeat and decimation of the empires army spread like wild fire. Civil unrest by the citizens erupted in great numbers and fear hanged in the air, polluting the morals of the people of the empire. Not only humanity was affected as they hide behind their walls, the Elves became even more isolated as they shut themselves in their forests, and the dwarves locked their gates to all outsiders, limiting trade routes into their mountains citadel. The strength of the mortals continued to drain away with each passing day, yet the abyss creatures continued to wait, biding their time in the north as their strength grew with each passing day. End Chapter 4 Chapter 5 - Deadly meeting! Chapter 5 Five years have passed since Garen¡¯s body was enshrouded inside a mysterious energy. Like a starving lion, his once decrepit body absorbed every ounce of the energy into him, healing him, and changing him over time. With the last of the mist dissipating into the air, his body laid motionless on the ground, awaiting the owner to awaken. ¡°My head¡ But I¡¯m not dead, why?¡± A throbbing pain haunted him as Garen slowly regains consciousness. Twitching his fingers and toes to confirm they were still attached, Garen felt relieved, knowing he still had all his appendages. Minutes passed as Garen continued in his semi-comatose state, not daring to open his eyes or make huge movements. Yet curiosity and impatient got the better of him like so many others in history. As he opened his eyes and adjusted to the darkness, the first scenery to welcome Garen was nothing short of disappointment. Within the short vicinity of his hazy vision, there was nothing but dirt and rocks of unknown quality, wet from the trickle of rain droplets. Not a single memorable object could be seen other than clusters of mold and puddles of water on the ground. Unsettled by the lack of life, he felt like he was trapped within a cage unable to break free. His breathing becoming erratic as his throat ached from a sharp pain due to dehydration. ¡°This cannot be happening; I don¡¯t want to die alone in such a place.¡± These thoughts blurted out of his mouth as Garen stared into the sky looking for comfort but the familiar color of blue and white wasn¡¯t where he expected. In its place was but a glimmer of light streaking in an unending line from one direction to another. ¡°That cannot be the sky¡ How high did I fall?¡± Garen was starting to regret his decision to jump but thought better of it when comparing his memory of his battle to his current situation. A unknown amount of time have passed since Garen awoke and only silence accompanied him in this solitary terrain. His dull senses returned to full and his thirst quenched from the small amount of liquid around. Garen searched high and low from where he awoke, looking for anything to be of use. By the end of his effort, Garen had in his possession pieces of dirty rags as his clothing and a leather canteen empty of water. There were other things seemingly familiar to him littering the rocky ground but somehow different, as if aged by years of tare and wear. Unsure and afraid of what to make of the situation, Garen pushed the thought into the back of his mind. In his search, Garen did come across one memorable object further away. Scattered into a mess was the sealed box that he threw away before his stand against the Ogre. Clearly broken from the impact, pieces of a once magnificent statue was scattered around the box debris. ¡°So the content was a statue, I wonder how much would it have gone for in the underground auction if I managed to deliver this to the dealer?¡± Garen looked down as he imagined Captain Ragard¡¯s wealth from his side business. In his moment of thought, a sudden irrational urge struck his body as the emotional longing for company grew inside of him. Driven by his needs, Garen willed his body forward, unsure of the general direction he was going. He himself unaware, the once frail human body of his has morphed from the remarkable energy - like a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. It would not be an exaggeration if one compared him to a monster because of the strength he unknowingly wields within him. Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon. Unable to keep track of time, Garen had unknowingly traveled quite a large distance from where he started; only sustaining his body through edible spores recognizable to him. His unstable emotions ran high as his mind paid close attention to any movements or sound around him, searching for the slightest hint of company. In his encounters, Garen did not meet any living creatures but did come across certain oddities in the ravine. Gazers of hot steam would randomly spew out of the rocky walls, keeping the temperature around him warm enough to keep his body from freezing. ¡°I need to find a path out of this place soon, I can already feel my body getting weaker and who knows what unnatural surprises awaits me.¡± Garen uttered these words to himself as he contemplated his options. Then out of the corner of his eyes, he could make out a silhouette of a opening far into the distance. Words of happiness could not begin to describe his feeling at the moment. Filled with excitement, Garen rushed towards the cave but a sudden overwhelming aura gushed out of the entrance, pushing him back and sending him tumbling backwards on his butt. ¡°What in the world was that?¡± Garen questioned himself and his sanity, unable to believe something was actually inside the cave. Then a sudden flash of light blinded his sight, ¡°Ahhhh!¡± were the only words he could get out of his voice before something took hold of him. Feeling a dire urgency to know who had restrained him, Garen stared wide eyes into his assailant. Standing equal to his height was a mummified corpse but unlike the average rotting dead, this forsaken being clearly showed signs of intellect as it stared right back at him with its glowing blue eye sockets! An undead can take on many forms, some haunted the land as ghouls, some returned as skeletons unable to rest in their graves. In this case, Garen¡¯s encounter would fall into the first category, a ghoul, known for ripping apart the fleshes and devouring their victim slowly was their trade mark characteristic. All the while, this action takes place entirely while the victim was still alive, watching as their life slowly and painful fades away. Unable to budge even an inch as his blood ran frozen from shock, Garen¡¯s face could only turn pale white as his heart pounded with a roaring thump. Time slowed down to a halt in Garen¡¯s mind as his instinct took over his body. Concentrating all his strength into his arms and fist, Garen let lose multiple punches that would send any average man flying across a distance. Unfortunately for Garen, even with his magnificently improved strength, only a thudding sound could be heard as his fist landed on a layer of black energy wrapped around the ghoul¡¯s body. ¡°Stop your assault child¡¡± the undead spoke in a clear and crisp voice of a old man, seemingly devoid of malicious intent as it continued to latch onto Garen¡¯s body in a deathly grip, refusing to budge even an inch. End chapter 5 Chapter 6 - A little cleaning Chapter 6 He sat alone with his back leaning against the stone cold wall, waiting patiently for the original resident of the shelter to return. Inner turmoil ravaged his mind as he waited but another part of him wanted to take his chance and flee into darkness once again. Both choices offered no set of comfort as the benefit of either option were by no right tempting to him. Continuing his indecision, echoes of footsteps far into the distance could be heard through the entrance located a few meter to his right. Minutes later, the subject of Garen¡¯s worry made its entry into the cave that was acting as shelter from the elements of nature, carrying something in a basket made of straw. ¡°I brought you some food and we can light a fire to warm you up, so wait a bit longer while I prepare something for you.¡± The undead spoke to him without making eye contact. Unsure of how to reply to the hospitality being given to him, Garen could only look onward in observation at the moving dead. Within moments, a blazing fire burned into life as a ball of flame erupted from the bony finger of its caster. Fueled by pieces of fallen branches and dried plants, the comforting crackle of burning wood filled the cave. Unable to resist his need for the first hint of warmth, Garen scurried towards the fire in the center of the cave. Seeing the desperation in Garen, a chuckle of laughter leaked out of the undead¡¯s jaw as it handed a basket of fish towards him. Ever since the passing of his mother, Garen have always made due with whatever he could find for sustenance. Ignoring the quality or taste, he would swallow the item no matter the condition if it could fill his belly. This time was no different, after an extremely long period of time since Garen ate anything decent, the miniscule amount of fish protein in the basket felt like a feast in the heavens. Not bothering to roast them over the fire, Garen dug into his meal as he devoured each piece like a reaper given a soul to keep. Somehow feeling disgusted by the gruesome sight in front of it, the undead ghoul actually flinched for a second as it tended the flames. ¡°Follow me, let¡¯s get you cleaned up and replace those rags you are wearing first,¡± the undead gestured a finger towards the inner tunnels of the cave. ¡°There¡¯s a spring that I dug up many years ago, we will head there and have you change into something more presentable.¡± Surprised by the information, Garen focused his eyes on himself and finally realized how unsightly he looked. Embarrassed by his ragged clothing and dirt covered body, he didn¡¯t want to reply in words as if his voice would only increase his shame. Nodding in agreement, Garen silently followed behind his guide. As the two headed further into the cave tunnels, Garen couldn¡¯t help but notice the clothing and accessories adorning his guide. Lit by the flaming torch in its bony hands, he could tell the material was ancient in design. Unconsciously, Garen¡¯s hand reached out as if bewildered by the beauty of the black fabric used to weave the valuable robe adorning its mummified body. ¡°Remove your hand!¡± a roaring voice shocked Garen out of his trance. Staring at him, Garen could see a flicker of anger as a dim red glow replaced the once blue shade in its eye sockets. This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. ¡°I¡¯m sorry... Somehow, my hands just moved without my realization.¡± Garen could only utter these words in front of this person as If an aura of strength weighed down on him like a insect. Seemingly disappointed, a sigh of sadness was released from the undead ghoul. ¡°No, it¡¯s not your fault. I overreacted there but next time; do not touch me unless I give you permission. Now enough of this, just a bit more and we will be there.¡± Minutes later, a faint tang of sulphur alerted his sense of smell as gusts of steam in the air brought comfort to Garen. Alit by a purplish light radiating from protruding crystals in the water; details of the walls and grounds revealed themselves to Garen¡¯s eyes. ¡®Magnificent¡¯ were the only word he could think of to describe this underground paradise. Without needs of instruction, Garen rushed toward the glittering spring lake in the center of the cavern. Splashing sounds echoed into the air as Garen cleaned his body of filth, unaware his commotion has alerted their presence to other creatures nearby. ¡°Hey,¡± waving his hand into air. ¡°I never actually introduce myself yet, names Garen Kindred. Mind telling me your name? This way I know what to call you.¡± Garen looked towards the shore, awaiting a reply. Amused by Garen¡¯s playful antics, a smile appeared on its wrinkled face. ¡°My name eh, has been so long since I spoke of it,¡± tilting its head toward the ceiling as if in thought. ¡°I was called Norzak Frizen by those that knew me in the.¡± His speech cut off by an anonymous change in the surroundings. Norzak beckoned Garen to come ashore immediately with a hand gesture for silence. The once friendly atmosphere they once had going was replaced with a sickening tense feeling inside Garen¡¯s heart as he struggled ashore against the muddy sand. Understanding the danger that was drawing closer with every passing second, Norzak shrouded its mummified body in the same black aura coating when it met Garen. Within expectation, silhouettes of multiple creatures revealed themselves as they jumped out of the water, descending upon their location in a circle with no visible escape route left. Standing in at full height equal to that of a full grown man, stood creatures with faces and gills equal to that of a fish and a tail like a reptilian lizard. Their arms and legs had frog like webs in-between their fingers and poisonous looking claws. Garen understood there are different tribes and races living on the continent, many he would never even thought possible. But his better judgment is telling him these amphibious creatures with silver and black coloration felt wrong to his instinct, as if they did not belong in this world. Unarmed and butt naked with droplets of water dripping off his body, Garen felt anger welling inside himself for his incapability to defend himself against such foes. Comparing his current situation with his previous life threatening encounter, the Ogre no longer seemed as frightening as it once had in his memory. End Chapter 6 Chapter 7 - Strength! Chapter 7 The amphibious creatures raised their jaws, revealing razor sharp teeth¡¯s, readying to rip apart flesh and bone. Instead of being intimidated by their actions, Garen could feel strength coursing through his veins and a urgning feeling to make a stand. He did not understand why he felt this way, putting it off to his brain playing tricks on him rather than reality. ¡®Hey Norzak, I know we just met but I just want you to know it was a pleasure meeting you. Even though you are already dead and all, I hope you will find peace after everything¡± With their backs against each other, Garen could not tell how Norzak reacted to his sincere candor. ¡°You presumed too early child, we are not the ones in danger here!¡± Clearly not amused, a sudden burst of white flames enveloped Norzak¡¯s bony hands. ¡°Let me show you how blinded you are to judge so early, one can attain power in many ways and having physical strength is only a scratch on the surface.¡± With a fling of its arm, the white flames flew into the air and burst apart into a raging inferno, causing enormous death and injury to all those caught inside the blast. With the tables turned, the amphibious creatures couldn¡¯t grasp the concept of magic inflicted upon them. Each suffering certain levels of burns from the flames impact, their predatory eyes locked onto the source of their comrade¡¯s demise. Losing all reasoning as flames ravage the survivor¡¯s bodies, they ran forward in a suicidal charge, intending to cause as much damage to Norzak as they can. Angered by the foolish and desperate charge of those that would throw away their lives so easily, Norzak could only sigh in contempt for those aiming for him. The black aura that had acted like a shield on Norzal¡¯s body suddenly expanded many meters in size, covering the two in a protected shell. For the next minute, Garen was awestruck by what he saw in front of him. Using their poison stained claws and teeth¡¯s as their weapon, the creatures attacked the barrier with a unrelenting ferocity as the life in their eyes slowly faded away. Safe inside, Garen watched on in silence with a hint of happiness at the carnage brought upon these aggressors. With a solemn roar, the last of the lizards finally met their demise as their smoldering flesh lay dead and lifeless across the sandy ground. Garen wanted to vomit at that moment, knowing he just witnessed mass murder and suicide by others living beings. ¡°Did I really feel happiness for a minute? I know it was either them or us but when did I become so cold blooded? Did I really change so much after only a short time period?¡± He wanted answers to these questions but there was no one he could look towards. Noticing the daze in Garen¡¯s eye, Norzak stepped forward. ¡°You seem to be worried about something, is this the first time you seen a creature of the abyss?¡± questioning Garen in a relaxed manner. Seemingly unable to comprehend the knowledge, Garen broke down into a shiver as reality finally caught up with him. To Garen, it has only been two weeks since he left home. Yet he fought a Ogre and ended up being trapped below the Grand Ravine, now he has even witnessed a undead mage slaughtering countless beings in front of him. Events have clearly spiraled beyond his imagination. Out of self-preservation, his mind closed in upon itself, refusing to intake anymore knowledge. Seeing the weak willed mortal in front of him, Norzak let out a long sigh before speaking. ¡°It would seem spending five years alone by yourself in that mist has harmed you in more ways than I have guessed¡¡± Within moments, Norzak regretted his words as Garen broke down into a mindless laughter and his blood shot eyes locked onto Norzak in shock. The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. Thoughts of abandoning such a fool blossomed inside the undead wizard but certain factors kept changing his mind. As a practitioner of magic, he carried inside him a unbearable urge to learn of the unknown and this mortal was the embodiment of the unknown. Unable to find a quick solution to the problem, Norzak could only relent and carry the naked deranged man back into his inner sanctum. Calmed down by a day¡¯s rest in a sheltered room, Garen confronted Norzak in a fitted rage, hoping his aggressive attitude would change what he knew was the truth. ¡°I will not believe you, you hear me? Everything you said are lies, I did not spend five years alone in this desolate wasteland. You must have a motive for this; speak the truth this instant or I will¡ will break it out of you by force if needed be!¡± His words sounded like those of desperation than a threat and he himself knew it as memories of the mysterious voice came back to him. Norzak felt pity and contempt towards Garen as he spoke. ¡°Humph, I have offered you nothing but goodwill since the moment I met you, yet you accuse me of treachery. I myself do not understand how you survived your fall, nor what power kept you alive for so long.¡± Stabbing a dried bony finger against Garen¡¯s chest, ¡°Maybe it has something to do with that mysterious mist blocking everything around your body before. Even if you refuse to face the harshness of reality, the fact that five years have passed since I noticed your presence remains true¡± His hollow eye sockets had once again changed to a red shade instead of the usual blue. Indicating his level of anger. ¡°Five years, it was not a short amount of time,¡± Garen reflected. He knew there were no lies in Norzak¡¯s words as he thought everything through last night. All evidence around him when he awoke pointed to the same conclusion but how could he possibly accept such a reality. To him, it only felt like a few weeks have passed since he last saw Crystal, his childhood friend. ¡°Very well, I still do not believe your words but if what you speak is the truth, then I have been away from home for far too long. I ask you one last favor and direct me to a route back to the surface.¡± Pleading with tear stained eyes as he lowered his head in submission. Surprised by the sudden request, Norzak raised his nonexistence eyebrows in shock. ¡°Very well, I will offer this last gesture of goodwill despite the insult you bestowed upon me. I will show you not everything is black and white in this world, and I¡¯m no foul being out to plague the world of the living!¡± Exalted by the chance to return home, Garen cried tears of joy as he embraced Norzak¡¯s mummified body. Caught totally off guard, Norzak let out a breath of grief at his own foolishness. Little did Garen know, what awaited him on the surface will no longer be what he expects. ¡°It will take quite a lot to apologize to Crystal again, I disappeared for five years and I¡¯m sure she will make me go through hell once I get back!¡± For once since Garen¡¯s misfortune, he had a smile plastered on his face as he thought about the friends he will meet again. End Chapter 7 Chapter 8 - Why? Chapter 8 Walking on foot, Garen and Norzak have traveled through many cave tunnels and climbed many narrow crevices. In two days, the duo has made their way through many twists and turns, now finally reaching the passageway leading to the surface world. When he took his first step out into the open world, blinding light caused Garen to narrow his eyes as he adjusted to the sun¡¯s ray. First glance, the rocky mountain terrain wasn¡¯t all that much different but the sight of weeds near the exit proved it wasn¡¯t a lie. Staring upward towards the blue and white sky, Garen¡¯s longing for home grew ever more deeply as he took in a breath of fresh clean air. In good health and outfitted with provisions, he was ready to part ways at this spot. But after carefully inspecting himself, he could see his black leathering clothing and everything else in his possession was given solely by Norzak¡¯s generosity. Garen felt he needed to say something, anything will do. He simply couldn¡¯t end their meeting in such a manner as a sense of remorse chewed away at his heart for his folly. ¡°Norzak, you know the things I said before, please forgive me. Those words weren¡¯t how I really felt¡ I¡¯m finally thinking clearly now, please, my mind wasn¡¯t thinking straight you know?¡± Garen wanted to keep going but was interrupted. Raising a hand in a forestalling gesture as he spoke, ¡°its fine, I understand. I won¡¯t blame you for acting the way you were but know this.¡± Norzak paused for a moment, making sure his words got through to Garen. ¡°I will most certainly hold your future actions into account, there will be no excuses.¡± Then out of thin air, an orb of light shrouded around Norzak¡¯s forestalling hand, in moments, a masterfully crafted silver sword engraved with rune symbols appeared. ¡°Judge me by my actions and not my appearance, I do not ask you to trust me completely but do not doubt my sincerity thus far.¡± Norzak tossed the mysterious sword towards Garen. Surprised and excited, Garen immediately inspected the silver sword, wondering why he was given a weapon so suddenly. ¡°I¡¯m a bit confused; I don¡¯t believe there is a need to arm myself. How could anything around here possibly get past you? Garen questioned in a worried tone. ¡°You will understand soon, for now, keep that weapon at hand. We are in dangerous grounds here and not even I can be certain in keeping you out of harm¡¯s way, you understand me?¡± Norzak¡¯s voice sounded serious and worried but he walked onward without taking another glance towards Garen. Unable to understand why someone like Norzak , a undead being capable of wielding destructive spells and slaughtering monsters in droves, was acting scared. ¡°That¡¯s not like him¡± Garen pondered before realizing another fact. ¡°Wait, you¡¯re coming with me? I thought you were only intending to bring me back to the surface!¡± Bewilderment haunted Garen¡¯s mind as he chased after Norzak. Soon the two had left the mountain pass containing the cave passageway they had escaped from. The mood in Garen was finally started to lift as he saw vegetation¡¯s all around; bushes, pine trees, and grasses of all kinds welcomed them as they walked along a path that seemed long neglected. Yet the air was eerily quiet as if devoid of wildlife, other than small games and insects scavenging for food, they did not meet a single person on the road. If Garen had inspected the forest terrain more closely, he would understand something was seriously wrong in the land. Stolen story; please report. Somewhat bored and agitated by the lack of words between them, Garen wanted to learn more about his traveling companion. ¡°There¡¯s something bothering me and I¡¯ve been meaning to ask you. Why are you going through such lengths in helping me and giving me so much?¡± Garen asked out of curiosity. Continuing along the rugged path without stopping, Nozark turned his head before replying, ¡°I¡¯m curious about you, or to be more precise, I¡¯m curious about what¡¯s inside you and your body.¡± Raising a finger to point at the center of Garen¡¯s chest, ¡°I can sense the same energy that created the mist inside your body, and I wish to learn the cause of it. That is the main reason I helped you in the first place, does that answer your question?¡± Even though Norzak¡¯s answer seems logical, Garen could tell he wasn¡¯t speaking the entire truth as one of his bony hands reach inside a pocket. Somewhat satisfied by the partial truth and a little disturbed, Garen felt relieved knowing the reason wasn¡¯t some insane undead plot waiting to be unleashed upon him. He always believed others will only lend a hand if they wanted something from another. Contemplating whether to inform his companion of the mysterious voice he heard in his near death experience, Garen felt it was better to keep this knowledge to himself as leverage in the future. Not to mention this person was a undead ghoul and a powerful magician to top it off, who knows when he might turn on me if he finds me of no more use. The sun has already risen late into the afternoon and they were reaching the edge of the forested lands, marking their journey half complete. If continuing at their speed, they might have been able to reach the city by late night, but lady fate hasn¡¯t been kind to Garen. A loud scream echoed into the sky, alerting Garen and Norzak to the danger awaiting them pass the cover of the forest. Uncertain by the sudden cry for help, Garen¡¯s body acted before his mind could react as he ran forward in haste ¨C truly a man of action before his thoughts. Left behind in the dust, Norzak stood there alone, shaking his head in disappointment for such rash actions. ¡°I better spend some time disciplining this boy soon. If he acts this way in every situation, there will be no end to the troubles coming our way.¡± Picking up his pace, Norzak followed closely behind Garen¡¯s trail. End chapter 8 Chapter 9 - Scouting party Chapter 9 A ensuing battle is currently taking place in a open road as soldiers fought for their lives against a pack of hungry abyss beasts. Spanning 3 meters in length and 1 meter in height, these abyss creatures sported characteristics similar to wolves and hunted in packs. Due to these similarities to the predatory animal, Scholars have even given these abyss monsters a name due to their large numbers and easy to recognize features. ¡°Squad leader, the Ravagers got Henry, we must help him!¡± A Young scout sporting light armor and two swords shouted towards a older man, most likely the leader of the party. Before he could say anything else, two Ravagers attacked him simultaneously with their two lethal canine fangs. Outnumbered and demoralized, the scouting party was surrounded on all sides, slowly being tackled by unrelenting attacks. Every couple of minutes, the wolf like Ravagers would manage to ensnare a careless defender, dragging them behind the pack. The tactics used were not new; in fact it was quite similar to how dolphins herded their prey in the open sea. But this was much more gruesome as screams of their fallen comrades echoed into the sky while blood splatter around. Nothing would remain after the terrifying carnage inflicted by the Ravagers, the only remnant of the victim¡¯s existence was pools of blood acting as a grave marker for their death. ¡°Everyone stay close to me, we will charge forward and head to the ruins of Muhindal, there we can use the rubbles to our advantage!¡± shouted the squad leader. Even in such a dire situation, this seasoned veteran did not give up and ordered his men into formation, readying to break out of the encirclement. It was at this moment, in the covering of the forest trees half a field away; two human shaped beings ran towards the scouting party. From quick observation, the squad leader could make out a young man with short black hair in his prime. The second person was less obvious as a glimmering black robe covered any hint of his identity. Even from that distance, Garen could make out the defenders were soldiers of the empire. Excited at the prospect of meeting a living human again, his mind pushed all other thoughts of fear or anxiety aside. Brandishing his silver sword, Garen charged forward into the pack of Ravagers as Norzak stood from a distance in observation. With his new found improved strength and bloodlust filled eyes, every strike and slash sent blood and gore flying into the air. Any semblance of order and tactic quickly fell apart for the pack hunters as Garen singlehandedly wiped out one-fourth of the enemies number. The scouting party was awestruck with their mouth hanging open. Like a gift from the gods themselves, a single man came to their aid and decimated the enemy that has spent day after day killing their comrades. Seeing the chance for revenge, the squad leader knew it was now or never as he gave his orders to everyone, ¡°Everyone attack now, fight alongside that person and get revenge for our comrades!¡± Upon hearing the long awaited orders, the group¡¯s moral and attitude changed completely as smiles of anger masked their faces. Working as a single entity, they attacked any careless Ravagers that had their backs turned against them. In minutes, the human plated feast has turned into a bloodbath for the Ravagers instead. By the time the last of the beasts was slain, Garen was covered from head to toe in blood. Calming down, he could see the others were gathered in a tight circle, surprise and confusion on their faces. Tracing their eyes, he saw they weren¡¯t afraid of him but rather staring at Norzak with a guarded position; luckily they were not rash like Garen and attacked without cause. Just when Garen thought he could help smooth things through if he spent a moment explaining, Norzak unleashed a devastating amount of power into the surrounding as he walked towards where Garen stood. ¡°Wait, stop! Don¡¯t harm these people; they have done nothing to wrong us.¡± Unnerved by the oppressive air, Garen pleaded towards the undead mage as his grip tightened against his sword. Without minding the somewhat squeamish plea, Norzak pulled off its hooded robe, revealing his husky dried body for all to see. From the glaring red glow in its eye, Norzak studied each men and women from a distance and seemed angrier with each passing second. Garen felt if he didn¡¯t act immediately to change the situation, another battle will soon follow only because he was too weak willed. But as soon as he took a step towards the group of people he tried so hard to defend, Norzak raised its left mummified arm to block his way. A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. ¡°Do not go any further and get behind me now,¡± Norzak instructed with a serious tone, assuring Garen that he wasn¡¯t acting this way without reason. Remembering the conversation they had that morning, Garen felt he owed this semi dead person a measure of trust. Taking in a deep breath, he resigned himself against his own wishes and did what he was instructed. As he walked around to stand behind the undead mage, Garen masked a face of anguish and pain, knowing the outcome of this encounter will not be a happy one. ¡°Listen mortals, if you wish to live then heed my words. Spread apart with at least a meters length in distance between each of you. I will not repeat my words!¡± As soon as the words left its jaws, Norzak summoned forth a unbelievable high tiered spell known only to casters of the highest circle ¨C Magicians are ranked from 1st to 10th circle in rank, the strongest can reach up to 10th circle and was considered unachievable by humans. Below Norzak¡¯s boots, a red spell circle had formed into the ground as sparks of lightning erupted from the markings. The description of a undead mage could no longer describe this being as it floated into the air. What was once feared across the land as they raised the dead from their graves, the epitome of black magic belonging only to the Liches of ancient times, capable of waging war against all in this world. Garen watched on with grim determination, knowing he will regret and never forgive himself if he closed his eyes. Unlike the previous coating of black energy that Norzak donned when they first met, this time its entire body was bursting with a dark flame of powerful magic. The grass nearby instantly withered away as if the very life was sucked out of them. With a finger pointing towards the scouting party, the unseen deathly grip of magic shot forth from where they stood, aiming at its intended target. The squad leader could sense the incoming attack but could not see anything with his non enchanted eyes. Even though he could not see, his instincts told the seasoned veteran unless he did what the undead said, he and his comrades would most definitely die like the withering grass in front of them. ¡°Everyone spread apart immediately!¡± Thanks to the high level of discipline from months of real combat, each person reacted to the order as if they had spent years performing the exercise. In mere seconds, the attack had reached the group but instead of harming the soldiers that were spread out, it aimed specifically for only one single person. The target had a tired looking face, standing furthest away in the back of the scouting party. What aroused the attack was the way his attire looked; despite the shambles and dents in everyone¡¯s armor, this lone person did not receive any injuries or a scratch for that matter even after going through all their perils. Nor did he deal any major blows during any opportunities presented in front of him. This had alarmed Norzak in his initial observation of the situation from afar; his conclusion was that this entity is dangerous if left untouched. Upon impact, a deafening sound erupted as a enormous bloom of smoke and fire spread around like a fog. Everyone including Garen was knocked backwards from the shockwave; the closest to the blast received the brunt of the initial force. Dazed and numb, Garen lay there with his eye squinted, unable to make out a clear picture of his surroundings. As time pass, the wind had slowly begun dispersing the smoke, revealing the aftereffect. Upon closer inspection, a looming shadow etched itself into his eyes, it was Norzak and he was fighting something near him! End chapter 9 Chapter 10 - To honor and glory Chapter 10 If anyone were to tell Garen a mage was weak in a close up fight, they were proven wrong this day. He watched on into the darkening clouded sky, unwilling to move even an inch from his spot. With each shocking strike and pounding blow, the air distorted like reality itself was bending to the will of fighters. The enemy Norzak was facing off against was less freighting looking then the ancient Lich, but no less dangerous. Oddly looking like a bird but with arm and legs of a human, if it wasn¡¯t for the sinister feeling it gave off, one might mistake it for an angel of lore. Contrary to Garen¡¯s reluctant will to run away, the rest of the men and women that had been knocked to the ground were quickly reorganizing themselves. They were just as confused by the outcome of the spell strike since everyone was unharmed except a few bruises. They were not fools especially the squad leader. In the Great War against the abyss race, he saw many horrendous battles and it was known some had special abilities and intellect. Clearly, one of his men was not what he seemed to be and the Lich caught on to the disguise perpetrated by the abyss monster. ¡°Gather everyone immediately; we are fleeing from this area now!¡± The squad leader gave out his orders desperately, afraid they would be caught up in the cross fire. Upon hearing the words of a human once again, Garen¡¯s eye flickered toward the sound. The fire in his desire to meet another living human once again ignited in his heart. His legs felt like heavy bricks as he takes each step but it wasn¡¯t enough to stop him. ¡°Wait, let me come with you. There are a lot of things I need to know and you people are the only normal people here.¡± Garen pleaded with hope but also fear of being rejected. No reply came from any of the members of the scouting party; everyone was far too busy trying to help a lagging comrade that was far too injured to move. Garen wasn¡¯t happy at being ignored but what can he say? He was in no position to argue but silence didn¡¯t mean rejection. Ignoring his own pain and scratches, Garen followed closely behind the group as they fled, leaving behind Norzak to deal with the mysterious foe that was fighting on equal force against the undead lich. Inside his heart, Garen did not feel comfortable at leaving behind Norzak, yet he knew his own power was child¡¯s play in their battle. It wasn¡¯t long before they had put enough distance to disappear from sight, but they were not safe as echoes of the fight reached their ears. A part of him wanted to return and fight along Norzak, it seemed the right thing to do but his other half was saying otherwise. ¡°Dammit Garen, why are you acting so indecisive¡ The way you are acting is pitiful, hiding behind someone else while they fight to defend you! Enough Garen, Norzak has done too much for you, there is no justification for leaving him there!¡± Garen¡¯s inner turmoil was showing on his face as a shade of darkness filled his eye. ¡°You there, my name¡¯s Logna Fristan, squad leader of this scouting party. I thank you for your help earlier,¡± the hulky man leaned closer. ¡°You wish to go back don¡¯t you? I can tell, I seen that face countless times in the war. No one likes to leave their friends and comrades behind to fight on their own.¡± Lagna made a fist and brought it to his chest, ¡°I will go with you, we owe you two strangers too much for saving our lives and giving the rest of my group a chance to go home.¡± You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. Garen was surprised by the sudden offer of help, taking a noticeable second to process the information. ¡°My names Garen Kindred, I lived in the city of Muhandil,¡± raising his blood stained hands as a offer of greeting. The indecision no longer in his mind, Garen showed a face of conviction, refusing to let his weakness control him. Then at this moment, a bright flash of thunder rocked the sky. The battle was about to reach its climax. Words were not needed to convey Garen¡¯s intention now, he just looked into Lagna¡¯s eye and they both understood. Mere mortals like them were a dime a dozen but even pawns has their uses. Garen nodded his head to show he was ready and Lagna did the same. But before they could go back, a young female soldier tapped Lagna¡¯s shoulder. As Garen looked her in the eyes, he could see fear in them and realized everyone around was the same. Whether they were injured or still fit for combat, these people were no longer capable of fighting and they needed guidance. ¡°Lagna, you cannot come with me,¡¯ he pointed a finger towards the rest of the group. ¡°They need a leader to lead them and you are the only person they can look towards.¡± Garen spoke with reluctance in his voice. The hulky middle aged Lagna looked torn but in the end, he could only nod his head as he looked down against his boots. ¡°If you make it out of this, meet us in Muhindal, we will stay there for three days and look for you every morning in the central square. Do not die; I still got a debt to return.¡± A smile formed on Garen¡¯s face, he truly did feel happy. Never in his life did he feel this way, it was the kind of bond only found in those fighting beside each other. ¡°Thank you; let us meet again if fate permits.¡± After these final parting words, he turned and ran. They all stood there watching him go, not one said anything. Their eyes were pained but that was all, a life of a stranger was far less valuable then their own. Up to this point, Garen has always managed to make it through his ordeals, even if the odds were against him. The burden he carried with, the Kindred family name has forced him to walk the path of a soldier. He was neither gifted in magic nor excelled in swordsmanship like his father. But a fight between an ancient lich and a monster that could match its strength made his spine shiver. In matter of minutes, he would reach Norzak, it was no time to stall. This day, he will prove his worth, the world will once again see a member of his house fight on the battlefield with courage and honor. Brandishing his sword, Garen could finally see Norzak and his foe. Both of them looked hurt, but such words were not enough to describe their conditions. Norzak was missing his right arm and his skull was cracked from an angle. There is no doubt his life was in peril as he limped with every move he made on the ground. ¡°Norzak!¡± Garen screamed with all his might to get the attention of his companion and now friend. The lich turned his head towards the person that called his name. A happy mummified face was imprinted itself upon the elder and if he was actually living, tears of joy would be showing. ¡°To think you would come back to help me, the gods haven¡¯t forsaken these old bones completely.¡± Norzak spoke with a hint of sadness but also happyiness. End chapter 10 Chapter 11 - Scorching hot! Chapter 11 Watching from a distance with a torn wing and a serious burnt wound on its tarsal was the angel like abyss creature. ¡°Enough, how dare you ignore my existence after inflicting such wounds upon me. I the proud Fazua created by the ¡®Mind¡¯ itself was reduced to such a state!¡± Raising a finger towards them, ¡°State your name and what is your purpose in hindering me, I can see you are different from those pests that had escaped me.¡± These words may seem strong but he was not fooling anyone, it was clear this foul being was stalling for time. Norzak sensed something was off but pushed it aside, even if his foe was stalling for time, he couldn¡¯t do anything at this moment in his current state. ¡°Names Norzak Frizen, as you can see I¡¯m not exactly a living person, standing before you is a 7th circle Lich so do not flatter yourself.¡± the Lich spoke with a smirk as a idea popped inside its head. Beckoning Garen to come closer, he wanted to convey his plan for the next strike. Upon hearing Norzak was a 7th circle Lich, the angel like Furzua¡¯s taunting attitude changed immediately. The highest level a mortal has ever reached in history was only 8th circle; the realm of demi god was 10th circle. Fazua was not a mindless meat shield like most of its brethren. The ¡®Heart¡¯ was the core of the Abyss race, a queen in a hive if you will. All of his brethren¡¯s were born from this single entity, the strength and intellect of each individual was strictly controlled from birth. Like a hive of insects, certain roles are given and carried out and his role was special. With enhanced intellect and enormous strength and power, Fazua was one of the select few in the first invasion force to lead and command the many legions of Abyss monsters. Upon reaching the undead Lich, Garen listened intently to the plan but a part of him just wanted to run wild at his foe. Never once did Garen imagined this Fazua was able to communicate with others, there was never any clues indicating they are capable of speech. To be looked down upon like this out of the blue, his unyielding will filled his blood at the thought of the enemy. Maybe it was the blood talking but he wanted to inflict the most painful and brutal blows he can manage at this moment. ¡°Listen Garen, I will distract him with my attacks and you will go from the side and strike him from his blind spot in the back. This is our only chance left; I do not have enough strength to defeat this enemy in my current state.¡± Norzak looked him in the eyes as he spoke, showing how serious this situation was. ¡°Use the sword I gifted you, I have spent years enchanting the metal, even in your hands, the sword is still lethal to anything it touches¡¡± Somehow the last part didn¡¯t sound too convincing even to Norzak but he had no choice but to leave it to fate. Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator. Before Garen could even reply, a flash of lightning was shot towards them by the enemy but was repelled by Norzak¡¯s barrier. Surprised by the sudden attack, he knew it was now or never. Following the plan, Garen left the Liches side as he made his way around. Norzak was definitely keeping his words in the plan as he let loose barrages of endless bolts of spells. Every element of nature was hurled at Fazua, Lightning, Fire, Water, Wind, even Dark magic was conjured into Norzak¡¯s spells, pinning their foe in a defensive formation. In mere seconds, Garen was already behind the enemy, readying to pounce at the foe. With his sword aimed true, he lunged with every ounce of strength he had in his legs and pierced straight through Fazua¡¯s back and out of the chest. Normally one would be overjoyed at stabbing a weapon into its enemy, yet the foe was eerily quiet. There was no scream of pain or curses of vengeance; Fuzua was silent as the night. ¡±What¡¯s going on, I clearly hit him right in the middle of his spine?¡± Sensing the situation was entirely wrong, Garen pulled his sword out, stepping backward to gain some distance. ¡°GET AWAY FROM THAT THING!¡± The usual calm and self-assuring Norzak was nowhere to be seen. As the ancient Lich stumble with every step he took, his mummified face was growing ever more dreadful. Fuzua¡¯s body immediately expanding like a smoking balloon as its limbs exploded with greenish blood spurting into the sky. Any semblance of the once angel like appearance of Fuzua was gone. In its place was a smoldering blob of gooey slime radiating uncontrolled energy readying to ignite. ¡°You shall all perish ignorant fools¡± was the last words the gooey mass spoke before waves of energy pounded into the very depths of the ground. Garen didn¡¯t know what to expect but one thing was certain, he needed to grab Norzak and bail the hell out of this place! Returning to his friends side, Garen lifted the undead Lich in a princess style and sprinted on his two legs to lower grounds. It did not matter where they flee to, anywhere would provide better safety then facing this foe. Close in their tails, the ground was cracking in every direction as flaming lava spewed from the very depths of the earth¡¯s crust. It would seem the entire region they were in had a vein of magma moving through the underground, that would explain the piping water steam in the underground ravine. With the sudden influence of Fuzua¡¯s powers, the once stable magma has boiled out of control, like a volcanoes erupting at its peak. ¡°Ahhhhhhhh¡¯ were the only words coming out of Garen¡¯s voice. No longer in danger, the two hid themselves behind a curving hill, sheltering them from the raining smoldering ashes. Garen¡¯s breath was heavy and fast as he shielded the now unconscious Lich from the searing heat of flowing lava in the distance. Looking closely, Garen¡¯s worries were increasingly hard to bear as the once flexible glossy sheen of Norzak¡¯s body become dry and flaky. With a arm missing and a crippled leg, any common mortal would have moved on into after life. Garen was no medical doctor but that didn¡¯t stop him from acting like one. Ignoring his own fatigued body, he worked diligently to ease his friends suffering. Limited in options, he could only clear up the open wounds. Recalling his lessons, the first step was to remove the clothing covering the wounds but with a quick glance, Garen realized there were shrapnel¡¯s of debris lodged onto every part of Norzak¡¯s body. ¡°The battle was far too intense; I can¡¯t even find a spot where a wound isn¡¯t apparent. ¡° Garen muttered to himself. Reacting to his words, the once unconscious Norzak made a choking cough as he tried to speak but his crumbling husk of a body wouldn¡¯t allow him. Seeing the pain his friend was in, Garen gestured for him to stay quiet and rest but something still felt odd to him. Using both his hands, Garen helped his patient into a sitting position with its back leaning against the cliff. ¡°He is so frail,¡± were the first thought that came to his mind. The dependable and powerful Lich earlier today just seemed so helpless now. Going through the wounds wasn¡¯t all that difficult; in fact it was rather easy considering he didn¡¯t need to worry about excess bleeding. All the while, Norzak watched on in silence, staring at him with a longing look. This made Garen a bit uncomfortable but seeing the weak pulses of light in Norzak¡¯s eye sockets, he didn¡¯t have the heart to question the ancient Lich. That night, Garen didn¡¯t get any rest as he sat against the cliff. He was tired, no question about that but something was urging him to stay awake, as if closing his eyes would blind him to something important. Looking up, Garen could see the dark sky shining brilliantly with stars, a familiar sight that he had seen so often in his life, reminding him of better times in his youth. He kept up with the silent and calm state for hours into the night until he felt something against his side. Glancing down, a locket was there on the ground, probably dropped by Norzak while he was moving. His first instinct was to pick it up and examine the content but before he could touch it, a bony hand reached out for the item. Garen was startled for a second. He thought Norzak was resting the entire time but now he knew it was his misunderstanding. Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings. Paying close attention, Garen could see how much Norzak cherished the locket. Dangling it against his dry and crumbling fingers, Norzak held the locket against his now heaving chest. ¡°You must be wondering what¡¯s inside the locket, right?¡± Norzak questioned in a low whisper as the glow in its eye sockets grew even dimmer. Garen wanted to stop his friend from talking anymore but even he could see it was pointless. The magical life force keeping the ancient Lich animated was slowly fading away and he could only watch on from the side. Garen didn¡¯t say anything; all he could do was nod his head to answer the question. Then with a flick of a finger, Norzak opened the lid of the locket, letting Garen see the mysterious content. It was a family portrait, a boy and a women standing in front of a man. Looking closely, Garen¡¯s eye widen in disbelief. The young lad in the picture was so similar to himself; the only difference he could really see was the age. ¡°Norzak¡ who?¡± Garen uttered these two words without realizing, too shocked by what he saw. The ancient Lich let out a small but grunting laugh, unable to hide its pain from the simple action of speech. ¡°What you see is my family. That child was my son, and¡ the woman is my wife. No matter how many years went by, I couldn¡¯t let them go. This small trinket was the only reminder of my life and my humanity.¡± Garen couldn¡¯t hold back his tears anymore; he finally understood the reasoning behind Norzak¡¯s unending aid. Until now, he always believed the answer he got before wasn¡¯t the entire truth, but he did not expect something like this. ¡°Thank you¡ I¡¯m sorry¡¡± ¡°No,.. the time we spent was short but thanks to you, I was once again able to live. Spending unending amount of years in hiding was warping my very soul.¡± Norzak held out the locket towards Garen, dangling it in front of his hand. ¡°Take this with you, all the knowledge I gathered through the centuries is sealed inside. Consider it a gift from an old man; you and my son¡ are too similar.¡± Garen wanted to look away. This was painful, too painful. It was exactly like how his mother acted when she was at death¡¯s door. Like time itself was finally catching up, Norzak¡¯s remaining body was slowly crumbling away into dust. Drawing his last breath, Norzak¡¯s voice was getting weaker to the point of a whisper, ¡°Don¡¯t be afraid of the future, no matter how much pain, there is always hope and¡¡± That was it, the light inside his hollow eye sockets were gone. All that remained was the dark void of a lifeless head. Garen wrapped his arms around the dusty husk of his onetime friend, unwilling to let go of the powerful bond they formed in the short period they spent together. ¡°Rest well¡± were the only thing he said after being left alone.
