《The Master and his Bird》 Prologue - Life isnt always fair. Prologue In the vast world of Tariel there exist two types of people, Regulars and Chosens. As for which category you''ll end up in, it depends entirely on your luck and destiny. Because in the mysterious world of Tariel all humans are born linked with their own respectiveSpirit. A Spirit,or a ''Soul Beast'',is the metaphysical manifestation of a human''s soul, and as all souls aredifferentin everything from its colour to its shape the same thing naturallyconcerns the Spirit. Spiritsor ''Soul Beasts'' are usually materialised in the form of a common animal, its shape and size can range from asmall forest mouse to a massive elephant of the wastelands. Individuals who are born with these ''normal''Soul Beastsare referred to as Regulars. But then there are Chosens. Withsouls containing traces of divine power a Chosen''s personalSpiritis generally in the form of mythological creature such as a massive Dragon, a beautiful Unicorn or a majestic Phoenix. Long ago there were even rumours of an individual whoseSpirit was none other than manifestation of a true god, namely the god of the underworld,Hades. Now normally this kind of rumour would be dismissed as a bad joke by the public of Tariel, however when confronted by the hateful disbelievers this individual chose to use actions rather than words to prove himself. Even today it is unclear how this individual''sSpiritactually looked like, however what is clear is that it granted him the terrifying ability to raise the dead... which brings us to the major divide between a Regular and a Chosen, Abilities. A mythological or mysterious Spiritgenerally grants an ability corresponding to its nature to its Chosen. This ''inherent'' ability does not follow any strict rules and is therefore extremely difficult to rate or rank. However the ancient records of researchers specialising in these inherent abilities has shown that the nature of an ability could range from anything such as low altitude flight to the complete mastery of an element. Some extremely rare and specialSpirits has even been capable of granting two abilities to their Chosens. Spirits are all unique, and of course they are, because all souls are similarly so. But for a long time researchers was wondering how there can exist several Spirits in the form of the Rat, when they are all supposed to be unique? After years of research and testing a man suddenly came with a stupid but irrefutable answer to this dilemma. His words left researchers all over the world dumbfounded. "Isn''t each Rat unique as well?''" With no one to refute this seemingly innocent yet profound answer, it eventually became the truth. And therefore there are many Spirits in the same form as one another. However in essence, none are the same. ***** The township of Aspel is a medium sized town specialising in the manufacturing and export of furrs and beast skin, with an overall good reputation the citizens of the town live ordinary but fullfilling lives. As a town located in the northwestern region of the continent, Aspel is under the authority of the great Imperial Xeria Empire. However the acknowledged rulers of Aspel is not the empire nor its representatives, but rather the noble House of Silver. The House of Silver, or more commonly known as the Silver Estate, is a noble family which does not extort their territory through means of force, nor do they enslave people who are unable to pay the taxes. In fact, the Silver Household was and still is the founding aristocratic household of Aspel, therefore its place in the citizens hearts has always been steadfast as a mountain. The Silver Estate is located in the centre of Aspel, separated from the rest of the town by afivemeter tall cobblestone wall. However today, this normally silent estate was brimming with noise and activity. Maids and butlers could be seen running back and forth with a mixture of panic and excitement on their faces. The cause of this panic was the birth of the Silver soon-to-be Madame''s first child. In Tariel it is not uncommon for deaths to occur when women give birth. No one knows why but the fact is that almost a fourth of the women giving birthends updying in the process. It haslong been speculated by both researchers and scholars to have something to do with the transference and creation of theSpirit, but no conclusion has ever been made. The Madame released a spine chilling scream as she clutchedthe sheets of her bed sotightlythat her knucklesbecame white. On the right side of the bed, a golden haired man could be seen standing still. Towering over 2 meters tall the golden haired man could be titled as a true dragon amongst men. But what really stood out about the man wasn''t his size, demeanour or even his hair. No, it wasthe majestic white tiger standing next to him. With an ethereal otherwordly aura this beast truly emitted the demeanour of a king. This tiger was his Spirit, the Ethereal White Tiger, and even though it wasn''t a mythological or mysterious Spiritit was still the Spirit of a Chosen. On the left side of the bed stood a white monkey type Spirit. Its appearance was that of a normal one meter tall white forest monkey whose arms were as long as its legs, but when looking into its eyes one would be baffled by the amount ofintelligence it possessed. However even though the monkey was intelligent it was still a Spirit of a Regular. At the bottom of the bed crouched a nurse experienced in aiding new mothersgiving birth. However even with her bagage of experience the nurse couldn''t stop her forehead from being covered insweat, glancing at the pained face of the young Madame, a trace of fear flashed through the deepest parts of her eyes. Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel. Scream after scream echoed throughout the halls of the Silver Manor, and before long two newhigh-pitched voices entered the chorus. It was a pair of twins. The Madame, passed out but alive, breathed large breaths as she lied in her sweat. Her white monkeySpirit carefully and lovingly started to wipe her drenched face with a wet towel. The man with the golden hair turned his cold, piercing gaze towards histwo newborns, his firstborns. Unknowingly a faint smile appeared on the man''s lips as his cold gaze grew warmer. Two baby boys. One with strings of golden hair on his head and one with strings of white. Noticing their healthy appearance, the golden haired man suddenly felt a heavy burden lift from his heart and his smile turned into a toothy grin. However when he turned his gaze onto the twoSpirits his joyful expression morphedinto one of shock and disbelief. Two baby birds. One of the purest gold and one of the purest white. The two baby birds, whose tiny weak bodies could barely stand, were struggling their way towards the screaming babies, like chickens towards their hen. The golden haired man, now father, gave the two babies a last glance before turning to face the nurse. With a nod from the man, the nurse immediately began to clean the bloodied babies. Looking at the scene of his two sons as well as their passed out mother, the young father sighed softly before leaving. As soon as the head of the family left, the maids stationed outside entered the roomto help the nurse clean, when their curious eyes landed on the newborns shock and amazement appeared on their faces. ***** The news of the Silver Clan''snewborn twins spread like wildfire throughout the township of Aspel. However instead of asking which gender the babies were the most frequently asked question was what kind of Spirits they were born with. In a world were strength ruled absolute, gender and appearance was naturally less important. It was the highest hope and the biggest dream of most commoners to one day have a child born as a Chosen. Being a Chosen came with endless of benefits and possibilities. Not only was it the minimum requirement to become a landed noble but a human with a divine soul would also live longer than their counterpart. Being born as a Regular however, would mean that they were damned to live out the rest of their lives as ''lesser humans'' or in some countries, not even humans. However the status of a noble was naturally different from that of a commoner''s. But all light has its shadows, and for alanded noble the importance of having Chosen children was more important than anything. It was not rare for a landed noble to abandon or even outright kill their children if they were born as Regulars. ... Two days later, in the master bedroom, the Madame could be seen breast feeding her two newborn sons. The two bird typeSpiritswere supervised by the white monkey as they seemingly had a cute mock battle on the floor... But still being chicks, the battle looked more like they hugging or stumbling onto each other. The Madame looked at her children with a loving gaze however when the white haired baby boy suddenly opened his eyes her gaze and her body froze. Blind. Her son was blind. Seeing his sky blue irises unblemished by anything black the Madame immediately became frightened out of her witts. Reaching out her hands she took a hold of the golden haired baby boy''s head before she forced his eyes open, seeing the two black dots surrounded by faint lines of brown iris a smile quickly replaced her frightened expression. Normal. Breathing out a breath of relief she once again looks at her white haired son. But somehow, her gaze had changed. Instead of the previous unconditional love her eyes had grown cold and indifferent. "I have no cripple for a son." She said coldly while putting her white haired son down his crib. This may have seemed cruel for some but for her, a Regular commoner, it was nothing at all. What sacrifices hadn''t she made to make it to this point? It was common knowledge that upgrading one''s status in society was as difficult as climbing up to the heavens. For two decades she has struggled to become a noble, and now, when she''s on the verge of success, this... leftover brat is going to ruin it for her? No way. Standing up from her bed the Madame glanced at thegolden haired baby in her arms before she ruthlessly abandoned her second son as she headed towards her soon-to-be husband, James Silver. With a twitter sound the golden bird looked at its twin spirit before reluctantly following its Chosen. ... After hearing the news of his son being blind, James expression turned strained. Blind? If this got out they would be reduced to the laughing stock amongst nobles. A cripple for a son? Shaking his head the family head started pondering on what to do, a few minutes passed in absolute nerve-wrecking silence before he eventually came to a decision. He would give his second son to the head butler''s family, keeping him alive as a reassurance if something ever happened to his first son. At the same time he would start spreading the news of the death of his second son as a cover up. Babies often dies during their first few months after birth, unable to adapt to breathing and all. Sighing in relief he slowly explained his plan to Silvia whose eyes gradually brightened before immediately expressing her approval. ... The head butler was an old fellow with a trademark smile always present on his lips. His name was Charles Black and his Spiritwas that of a black dog, fitting for a butler. When the old butler brought home the family head''s baby to his wife Emma, he quickly described the instructions he had received from the family head. Emma, Charles noticed, barely seemed to listen to what her husband was saying as her attention was completely attracted to the young baby boy in her arms. After hearing the whole story from Charles, Emma had long since begun crying while complaining about the nobles'' heartlessness and cruelty. ''You are too kind hearted Emma, but I guess.. that''s a part of why I love you so.'' Charles thought with a sweet smile on his face as he watched the crying Emma slowly hug the baby boy to a state where it was uncertain if he was alive or dead. Chapter 1 - Electrical Currents Chapter 01 The Black family was but one out of the dozens of servant housesbeneath the Silver Aristocratic clan. As a commoner house the Black family consisted of a total of five members. The father and husband Charles, the mother and wife Emma, their first born son, their second born daughter and the newest addition to their family, the white haired baby boy, Nero. The Black family''s oldest child was a young boy calledCaden. Caden, whose age was but four years older than Nero, inherented his father''s raven black hair which was apparently a common trait in the Black family. Similar to his father however, Caden''s spirit was that of a cutegray wolf puppy, a Regular. The second born child of the family was a young baby girl barely a month old, her name was recently decided to be Rina. Herspirithowever, was that of a strange black kittenwith two snake-liketails, a Chosen. Thanks to just having given birth to Rina, Nero could continue being breastfed and naturally became a part of the family. ... Six years later... ... On a small green hill on the outskirts of Aspel sat a young boy with a head full of soft looking white hair. The young boy''s eyes were wide open revealing two beautifulblue gems as he faced the object in his hands. Looking at his calm and innocentexpression, the young boy almost seemed a bit dignified... or well.. as dignified as a six year old could seem at least. In his hands, the young boy held onto the small wooden sculpture of a rabbit. The work was not a masterpiece, with edgy and sharpborders, however it wasn''t something you''d expect a six year old to do, much less a blind one. Suddenly the young boy stopped carving the sculpture and his eyes smiled. With an excitedscreech a bird descending at an incredible speed could be seen diving towards the boy. When the bird finally reached its master its feathered body suddenly stopped descending mid air and its gaze changed from a cold predatory green to a loving warm. "Haux you''re back." The blind young boy surmisedwith a pure smile on his face. The previous white baby spirit changed drastically during its first six years of life. Its snow white feathers had almost completely faded away, leaving only the tips of its feathers in their original colour. The rest of the bird''s feathered body had beenreplaced by feathers so dark blue that they wouldneed to be under direct sunlight to not be confused with black. The size of the small bird had grown to a length of over half a meter long with a wing span of approximately one and a half meter. He, the blue bird Haux, hadalready turned into what would be defined as a ''big scary bird'' by the citizens of Aspel. Its cold, calculating hawk-like eyeswere the trademark definiton of a predator''s. Causingeven the bravest of guards tofeel reluctant to approach it. The bird called Haux was what would be defined as a Mysterious Spirit. A mysterious spirit is an entity completely unheard of before, their legends either forgotten or simply in the making. Howeverto be classified as a mysterious spirit it also has to grant its Master withan ability. How could it otherwise be a spirit of a Chosen? Haux''s species was named Thunderbird, by the young boy and his father, Charles. But how could they, two commoners uneducated in the forms of spirits, know that the bird type soul beastHaux with an attribute towards lightning and thunder was unheard of? There are after all, thousands ofbird type spirits with the lightning or the thunder attribute. Some common ones can even be found in Aspel, for example the Thunderbolt Eagle or the Flash Hawk, heck there is even a spirit in the shape of an electrifying song bird. What made Charles certain of Haux''s identity as a mysterious spirit was that it didn''t only "control" lightning. But seemed to have an innate sovereigntyover it. And everyone, even commoners, know the defining characterstic of a heaven rank spirit. The uncontested control over an element or law. A heaven ranked spirits are the royals of their respective element. Imagine a newborn phoenix fighting a mature fire salamander. Even if they belong to two completely different tiers of might, the newborn phoenix could still easily defeat the fire salamander by taking control over its innate flames. This is the fundamental difference between a heaven rank spirit, and the rest of them. However the amount of heaven rank spirits are extremely few and incredibly rare. Out of a thousand Chosens, you would be lucky if you found even single heaven rank spirit. The fact that a mysterious heaven rank spirit has been birthedwould surely throw the high officials of the empire in a frenzy. As new kinds of heaven rank spirits arerarely discovered. Not to speak about the potential profit as well as danger it could cause. But even after six years the world remained oblivious. The four empires are still fighting a never ending war in the shadows, all whileposing as "competitive" in public. As for the reason why they are reluctant to go into war completely, it is greatly related to the fifth major power on the continent. The Spirit Guild. Or more informally, the Spirit Academy. The Spirit Academy is a large institute located in the centreof the continent, bordering to each of the four empires. The Spirit Academy is the number one academy for Spirit Masters or in other words, trained Chosens. Furthermoredue to the large amountof Chosens choosing to stay in the Spirit Academy after graduating, itstrue power is absolutely comparable to any of the four empires, if notstronger. And due to the rivalry between the empires as well as their lack of high grade spirit teachers, they would never join forces to deal with a neutral and peaceful entity such as the Spirit Academy. The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. As for why no one knows about Haux, the answer is quite simple. The young, blind boy obviously didn''t get much chance to speak with anyone except his family. And the spirit in question''s arrogance and pride as a sovereign spiritnaturally wouldn''t allow it to bother itself with lesser creaturessuch as humans, with the exception of Nero of course. Haux, now contently perched on the Nero''s slimshoulder, looked at the wooden sculpture in the boy''s hand in curiousity. The boy, ignoring the odd bird''s behaviour, continued his carving... As his hands touched the wooden rabbit white sparks of electricity jumped from the boy''s fingers before entering the sculpture. After a fraction of a second the sparks left the wooden rabbit before once again entering the boy''s fingers... This was the ability the heavenrank mysterious spiritThunderbird had granted its Master. Supreme VoltageAuthority. The major difference between his ability and that of another lightning type Chosen''s ability is that he does not only possess absolute authority over all kinds of electricity and lightning, but he can also ''sense'' active charge carriers (electrical currents) no matter how weakthey might seem. By sending a minimal amount of lightninginto an object capable of leading electricity he can activatetheir inactive charge carriers and thereby sense the electrical current created. As a result he can''sense'' the shape of the said object. This of course has its fair share of flaws and problems, however for a boy without sight it can serve as a way to not only ''see'' but to sense everything he touches in a view without blindspots. Furthermoreas the scholars of the world of Tariel is extremely limited in their knowledge about electricity and its conduct no one really knows how his ''sight'' truly works. But being as young as he is the boy clearly hasn''t perfected the art of sensingthrough electricity. Therefore the area he can sense is limited to barely 20 square meters. Furthermoreany objects not connected to the ground instantly becomes invisible. If the target is airborne he''ll have to rely on charge carriers which are already active to sense it (such as the Thunderbird who has small sparks constantly zapping their waythrough its feathers). The boy Nero, finished with his carvingput the rabbit in his pocket. Under the weight of his companion Haux he pushed his way up to a standing position, his legs almost bending under the weight of the large bird.Haux however, seemed to enjoy its personal vehicle as it raised its beak to look arrogantly at the ground beneath them. Feeling the town walls 20 meters behind him Nero closed his eyes before casually picking up the stick on the grass beside him. With a deep breath of air, Nero headed back into his home town, Aspel. ***** (Nero''s perspective) Sensing the approaching town gates along with the two stationary guards I couldn''t help but to frown in annoyance. Sighing I poked Haux with my stick. Understanding my meaning Haux immediately stops acting hostile, revealing a fake weak demeanour.. Closing in onthe gates I secretly lowered my head. ''Not again, please don''-...'' "Oh! Isn''t it our very own little Chosen! Where you out practicing your ability again? Did you check it was trees and not people you were zapping with those sparks of yours?" The left guard suddenly exclaimed before snickering insarcasm, disgust and a trace of envy barely clear in his voice. Beside him I sensed the shape of a full grown badger, brandishingits sharp teeth while hissing towards me. ''C-can''t they just leave me alone?'' I complained inwardly ''... i-it''s alright just keep your head down you''re doing good.'' I tried to strengthen my resolve. "You know I really hate your attitude! Why do you always try to act so calm? Do you think you''re better than us just because your little birdie has some sparks in its feathers? Huh? ANSWER ME YOU BLIND BRAT!!" Stopping in my tracks I once again felt a familiar lump expanding in my throat. Turning my body towards the guard I felt badger come closer. "I-I''m sor..." SHRIIIIIEEEEK! Before being able to finish my sentence Haux on my shoulder couldn''t take it any longer. With a loud shriek I sensed its sharp eyes starting to glow in a much brighter intensity. Focusing my abilityonhim I sensed his predatory eyes starting to flicker with violent sparks. It was the first time I had sensedhim this angry, hate and disgust seemed to ooze out of his bones. Though I know my spirit can''t speak, I have never questionedthat Haux is really intelligent. He always listens to what I say and sometimes he even answers in his own way. Noticingthat I was the reason why Haux gotangry, I instantly felt the lumpin my throat tighten.Fortunately my eyes seems to lack the function of crying. Howeverthis, I''m actually happy for. Otherwise, if the guards could see how much their actions and words hurt me, they would surely find pleasure in finally getting to me. The guards and the badger seemed almost frozen in place. With their complete and full attention on Haux they eventually snorted simultaneouslybefore silently backing away. The duo of Regular guards knew thatthey weren''t a match for Haux if he got serious. Furthermore aware of my family''s connecting with the local ruler they knew what they could, and couldn''t do. Raising my armI softly put my hand onHaux''s feathery head. Petting him slowly I sensed the brightness in his eyes lessening. Once I was sure he had calmed down I once againlowered my head before enteringAspel, the lumpin my throat was suddenly much smaller. Here''s an idea of how Haux looks like: Chapter 2 - Friends & Enemies ...they aren''t a match for Haux if he gets serious. So they reluctantly ignores us instead. Raising my hand I pet Haux''s feathery head. Feeling him calming down I head into Aspel while feeling the fist in my throat slowly fading. Aspel, my home town is on its usual merry mood. Citizens could be seen mingling with each other while their Spirits run around searching for small game. I head straight towards the town center with Haux on my shoulder. His domineering presence automatically creates space for me so big crowds are of no problem. And if someone does come to close Haux usually scares them away by ''accidentally'' releasing a thunderbolt at their feet. With my stick I pretend to not ''see'' the faces looking at me from the crowd. Pity, disgust, jealousy and anger. But comically enough is that it''s not disgust, jealousy or anger that pierces my heart. No, it''s pity. What do they know of my life? Are their lives perfect enough to give them the right to pity me? Of course this is but a feeling I would never dare to say something like that. Picking up my pace it doesn''t take long until I reach the town center, the Silver Estate. It was only a year ago I started trying to sense my surroundings with electricity. And now if I focus I can sense everything in my surroundings until 10 meters away. However if I focus hard enough I can instead choose to sense 80 meter in one direction. But even when focusing I can''t sense the whole Silver Estate. It''s simply to big and further more all the small details on the estate makes my head hurt. Comparing the Silver Estate to the rest or Aspel is like comparing heaven and earth. And Aspel isn''t a poor town ship, that you can notice by just walking down the street. No, the Silver estate is just massive. *shhrrrrriiIIIIIIIIEEEEEEKKKKKKKKK!* A long shriek echoes through the area. Loud enough to be heard from every corner of the estate. Then suddenly a golden/red bird the same size as Haux breaks through... yet another window. The bird Spirit is in my detection range and I immediately sigh. "Not again..." Haux, seeing the red golden bird excitingly rubs his beak on my head. Being my life partner and my only friend I naturally know what he wants. "Okay, go! Don''t break anything." Hearing my voice Haux immediately releases an exciting shriek loud enough to make me go partly deaf. Then he quickly charges towards the red golden bird already circling above us seemingly comparably excited. Then another creature enters my detection range, Eric Silver. A boy my age with pure golden hair looks out through the broken window with a frown on his face. His eyes doesn''t even notice me, or maybe more accurately, he doesn''t even put me in his eyes. Before long Eric''s, or what my family has told me to call him Young Master''s voice echoes through the surroundings. "FELIX GET BACK HERE! WE HAVEN''T FINISHED TRAINING!!" The two birds immediately halted their mock battle, lightning and fire slowly fades away from the heavens. Haux looks towards me and the red golden feathered bird named Felix looks at Eric with a hint of defiance. Felix is after all a Pheonix. A being which pride rivals that of a Dragon''s. Why should he listen to a brat still wet behind his ears? Now contrary to some beliefs, Spirits aren''t under their ''masters'' command. They are a manifestation of their soul. You could even say a Spirit is half of the soul. The only thing which differs between a Spirit and a master is the master''s ability to ''banish'' their Spirit. This however comes with a great price. A Spirit is after all half your soul. To banish a Spirit you need to rip your soul in half, a minor mistake would result in death, and not a regular death but the death of your very soul. But a Spirit or more specifically a Spirit of the Royal rank and higher doesn''t fear banishment. And the Pheonix named Felix naturally doesn''t either. Even without my vision I felt the atmosphere worsen by the second. Even I have heard of extreme cases where a Spirit has started despising its master which results in a life partner that ignores or even ruins your life. With sweat on my forehead I decide to break the silence. "Haux, get back here we are leaving." Haux seemingly understanding the situation shoots a last low voltage lightningbolt at the red golden feathered young Pheonix. Then quickly dash back to my shoulder. Turning my body I start walking towards the second mansion where my family lives. Unaware that both Eric and Felix stares at my back with mixed feelings. ... After about 10 minutes of walking I arrive in front of my home. Before entering I stop, without turning my head I speak in a determined voice. "You need to stop winning against Felix. I know you are more powerful than that rival of yours so you don''t have anything to prove. You need to remember not to reveal to much of your power." Haux remained silent for a while before he reluctantly agrees by a slightly sad chirp. Hearing this I sigh. "But if you are sure you aren''t being watched I wont mind if you go all out..." If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement. Hearing this Haux chirped happily while rubbing his beak against my chin. I could feel his feathers tickli... "Hahahahaha n-no stop it! HAHAHAH NO MY EAR PLEASE HAHAAHHAH!" Haux''s number one person is obviously Nero so when he noticed Nero smiling he happily chirped while starting to tickle the young boy even harder. "PHAHAHHAHAH P-PLEASE I BEG YOU! I-I WILL GIVE YOU A HORNED FIS.. PHAHHAHAHAHA OKAY OKAY TWO HORNED FISHES JUST HAHAHAHAH P-PLEASE STOP!" "I still can''t help but envy your relationship when I see you two acting like this." Without any of us noticing Caden had opened the door and was looking at us with a smile on his face. Caden is now 8 years old and his black hair has been left growing now reaching his shoulders. Behind him is a still growing grey wolf. And as a member of the wolf family you can''t help but shiver when looking into its eyes, ready to kill at the snap of a finger. But I clearly have little to no trouble in that regard. Though I can still feel the cold gaze on me. Coughing a little to hide my red cheeks I answer Caden. "Haaahh Caden, I''m sorry I didn''t notice you standing there." Haux noticing the funny game is over reluctantly stopped tickling me and flew over to the wolf, landing on its back. Caden seeing this sighs while saying. "Don''t worry about it, I''ve been training in the art of stealth for two years now. If I couldn''t even sneak up on my blind little brother I would die from embarrassment." Hearing this I smile a genuine smile. Caden has alway treated me like a ''normal'' person, that''s why being around him feels really refreshing. "Yeah, I can sense that you and Calf has started getting this new kind of feeling to you." I say while sensing Cadens expression turn into a bright happy one. "For real?! You''re not lying?! I-I was sooo jealous when first meeting teacher''s disciples. They all had this cool cold feeling. Heheheheh I''m only 8 but I have already started catching up." We continued to talk merrily until Caden noticed we where still standing outside. So with a laugh we headed inside. Charles, my father is working in the Silvers Estate while Emma, my mom is out buying clothes. Saying good bye to Caden who is leaving to meet his friends I head towards the kitchen to find some horned fishes, otherwise Haux would never forget it... who ever created the term ''bird brain'' clearly wasn''t right in the head as Haux can hold a grudge for months. Entering the kitchen I almost trip over my own foot. "Great, Rina is here..." Sitting by the table is a girl my age. Her hair is long and silky black reaching her shoulder blades. And even though I don''t like her I can''t help but admit she''ll grow into quite a beauty. On the table in front of her is a black cat with golden eyes. The cat would look like a completely normal cat if it weren''t for its two tails. Rina''s Spirit is of the Luck Stealer specie. A very rare mythological Spirit with an attribute towards luck. The Luck Stealer is ranked high in the Spirit rankings. It''s ranked as a Royal rank Spirit. ''Only'' two ranks under Heaven. Her cat type Spirit is named Clair. An unusual name given to a Spirit but what can I say? Rina is an unusual girl. Seeing me entering the room she snorts loudly. Ignoring her I help myself towards the freezer. Looking around I only find one horned fish... ''That''s weird I swear there was three this morning..'' I think while unpacking the fish. Haux, with excellent timing decides to come back from his meeting with Calf (Cadens Spirit). Now different from his relationship with Felix which is that of childhood rivals, his relationship with Calf is somewhat strange. The both of them has the aura of a predator surrounding them, so I guess it''s a relationship of mutual respect? Which is really strange as Haux usually never concern himself with ''lesser'' Spirits. Seeing the 40 centimeters long fish with a 10 centimeters long horn his bird eyes widens. In the blink of an eye he dashes towards me. Creating a gust of wind which spreads through out the hall. Thankfully the kitchen, or rather every room inside the mansion is quite large. Stopping in front of me he is almost shaking from excitement. Seeing this, I smile. He may seem like a scary Spirit to others but I know he is really childish on the inside. Not bothering to gut the fish I throw it towards Haux. He, like lightning grabs it in midair with his talons. Not even waiting until he lands before he digs in. "I can''t believe how repulsive you and your Spirit are. Have you ever heard of etiquette?" Hearing the angel like voice, yet defiled by a smug tone I sigh. If only Rina wasn''t so proud she would almost be likeable. "Why should we bother our selves with etiquette when we are alone at home?" I answer with an indifferent tone, I don''t have the energy to put up a good face towards people like her. Author''s Note: Sooo, I decided to end the chapter here so you guys don''t get spoiled with crazy long chapters. I prefer to write a bit shorter but more in quantity than one long chapter a week. Next chapter: The Spirit Academy Chapter 3 - The Spirit Academy "Why should we bother our selves with etiquette when we are alone at home?" I answer with an indifferent tone, I don''t have the energy to put up a good face towards people like her. (Rina''s perspective) ''I can''t believe it! This blind orphan actually talks back at me!'' Ever since I was born I have been treated like a princess. Even Eric Silver, the young master treats me like an equal. But this brat who is even younger than me actually speaks to me like that. Just hearing his tone reminds me of... that incident... Shivering I look at Clair for help. Maybe she can steal some luck as a revenge. But my Spirit isn''t even looking at me. Her usual beautiful proud eyes are focused on someone else. The brats bird type Spirit, Haux. I have heard mama and papa speak about how its so sad that Nero is blind, he has a Mysterious Spirit. He would undoubtedly be able to enter the Spirit Academy if it wasn''t for his blindness. Remembering their conversation I follow Clair''s line of sight onto Haux. Seeing his green eyes I flinch. Bright green pearls which can only be compared to emeralds. Yet the emotion in his eyes is somewhat similar to Nero''s, indifference. But not the same kind of indifference as Nero, no. Haux''s eyes seem to transmit the meaning "I won''t care what you do, but hurt me or my master and I''ll rip you to pieces". Haux notices my gaze and looks back at me, not in the least lowering the contempt in his ice cold gaze. Shrinking back into my chair I clench my fists in anger. But what can I do? Turning my gaze back towards Clair I remember why I gave her the two horned fishes earlier this morning. The Spirit Academy''s letter. With a smile on my face I snort and continue reading the rulebook for students attending the Spirit Academy. ------ (Nero''s perspective) After leaving the kitchen and the spoiled princess I headed towards the library. The only time I can be inside the library is when dad and mom are out on business. Wouldn''t it be kind of weird if you saw a blind boy electrifying your precious books? And I don''t want to tell anyone about my ability to ''see''. It''s amazing what people can do when they think no one sees, and I really enjoy keeping a secret, it''s like I am some kind of hero heheh. The reason I''m in the library is to practice my ability to sense finer details. It''s still hard for me to read as there is barely any different in the ink and paper. But there IS a difference! That''s why I practice, my dream is to be able to enter the Spirit Academy. Which just happens to be everyone''s dream. A school with students who are daughters and sons of kings, students from all over the continent possessing unimaginable abilities and the most exotic Spirits in the universe! It''s the birthplace of legends, The Spirit Academy. To enter you need to: 1. Have a Spirit in the Captain rank at the age of 6 or lower. (Commoner > Soldier > Captain > Commander > General > Royal > Emperor > Heaven > Legendary > Ascension (only rumoured) > ?) 2. Be able to read and do basic mathematical formulas. That''s it, if you achieve these two requirements they don''t even reject orphans or homeless. But achieving the rank of Captain before 6 is a very, very rare thing. To be able to do that you either need a Spirit with a rank of General or over. As the rank of a Spirit is based on its potential to reach the claimed rank. Not which rank it was born with. If a Spirit was born already in the Heaven rank, what is to stop it from exterminating a whole city? Or you need a Spirit with incredible willpower and an initially strong soul. I think Haux has recently breached the border entering the Commander rank. Which is really good since he''s only 6 years old. Rina''s cat type Spirit is probably around the middle of the Captain rank soon reaching the peak. So with newfound determination I start trying to sense the differences between ink and paper. .... Three hours quickly passed with little to no progress. Haux is currently outside hunting small game and playing with (harassing) other servants Spirits. Putting down my book I sigh. I have gotten far in this one year of practice but I am still quite far away from being able to ''read''. Checking the pendulum clock I notice my mom should have gotten home already. With a smile on my face I head towards the kitchen. ... My mom, Emma is the kindest person I know. She is the reason I can go outside everyday when the world is against me. Her Spirit is a white rabbit. Which is what I used as a model for my rabbit sculpture. Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. Imagining her smiling face when I give her my present I unconsciously speed up. Entering the kitchen I sense my mom staring out the window with her back facing my direction, her expression is sad yet glad? The expression is so strange I unconsciously stop, forgetting about my previous excitement. It didn''t take long for her to notice me. Her expression changing to her usual sunny smile. "Oh Nero, I thought you where still in the library?" Hearing this I snap out of my daze with a flinch. "H-how d-did yo.." Before being able to finish my mom cuts me off with a sweet smile. "Hihih Nero you''re still to young to hide anything from your mother. I guess it has something to do with the lightning bolts you were sending into the book but as long as you are careful I wont mind." Hearing this I feel a mountain disappearing from my shoulders. The feeling of hiding something from your mom is truly excruciating. Letting out a sigh I start smiling once again. "Speaking of which. M-mom I made you a.." *BAAM* "MOOOOOOOOOM I''M HUNGRYYYY!!" Getting cut off.... for what I think is the 3rd time today. I don''t even need to sense who it is that basically destroyed the kitchen door. "Rina! You need to be more lady like! You won''t get any friends in the Academy like.." Remembering me she stopped talking. But the damage was already done. ''So Rina got the letter...'' Thinking this I notice my sweet smile fading. But not wanting to show it hurt me I force my smile to remain. But what''s left is a miserable smile. Rina noticing my expression smiles while saying in a loud voice. "Yeah I''m sorry mom, I''m just so excited to have been invited to the Spirit Academy!" During the last line she was even looking at me while talking. A sweet smile on her face. Feeling the fist in my throat wanting to break free I struggle to utter some almost inaudible words. While clenching the wooden rabbit figure in my closed hand so hard I feel something snap. "Ah.. e-ehm it was n-nothing. I n-need to find H-Haux he is p-probably looking f-for me. Bye." I say while stuttering. I can feel mom looking at me with a nostalgic expression... pity. Seeing my mom looking at me like those strangers on the streets I feel my heart start hurting and the fist in my throat almost hindering me from breathing. Turning around I run out of the room. Barely hearing my mom sigh behind me. I continue to run all the way to my room. My body screaming with the desire to cry. But there are no tears falling. Panting I look at my rabbit figure. The neck broke. Wanting to cry more than ever I throw it into the garbage can. Pity. She was looking at me like I am some kind of pitiful creature. The fist in my throat has been there so long it has started hurting. Jumping on my bed I bury my face in my pillow. ... *Peck* *Peck* ... *Peck* *Peck* Without the care to pretend to behave like a ''normal'' person. I just release some electricity in my bed which quickly travels throughout my room. Focusing on the electrical currents I ''see'' Haux pecking my window. Glass has always been hard to sense but I know it''s a window because there is a rectangular shape where I can''t sense any wall. Like a zombie I rise from my bed. My eyes closed and head facing the floor. Opening the window I take Haux by the wings and pull him close. With my nose running I start sobbing while hugging the quiet Haux. --------- (Emma''s perspective) Seeing my son run away in panic I don''t know what to do. Turning my head towards Rina who is looking at the door Nero just ran out from with a questionable gaze I sigh. "Rina.. you know your brother has dreamed about the Spirit Academy through all his life. When he was smaller he cried for days when we told him he needs to be able to read to go to the Academy. Why would you say something like that?" Hearing me I see Rina''s face turn ugly. "What? I only said the truth and he is not even my brother!" Hearing this I feel something snap. "RINA BLACK! How dare you say such a thing! He may not be your brother by blood but he is MY SON. Do not ever say such a thing again!" Rina flinched and I can see her eyes start welling up with tears. Only now do I realise I screamed at a six year old. Regretting my actions I sigh once again. "Rina, he''s had a miserable life not being able to see. I think you know that except from us, his family, he only is with that bird of his. So we need to be here for him more than anyone. Do you understand?" Rina''s who is desperately trying to withhold her tears and failing miserably at it nods weakly. Seeing my darling baby daughter like that I can''t help but walk up to her hugging her tightly. She completely collapses in my embrace saying she is sorry. And hugging me while she drenches my clothes in snott and tears. Author''s note: Wow, I sat in the train and wrote this. Not being able to hold it I started crying... people are staring at me as I write this... imagination is dangerous... I want to take this chance to apologise for my bad grammar. As I said previously I''m Swedish and have just moved to Japan. With Japanese lessons everyday my English has deteriorated. Peace out everyone! Chapter 4 - The Power of Connections Seeing my darling baby daughter like that I can''t help but walk up to her hugging her tightly. She completely collapses in my embrace saying she is sorry. And hugging me while she drenches my clothes in snott and tears. (Charles perspective) After a day of work I''m finally on my way home. During the pass 6 years the young master has basically been training everyday. Heck I swear I saw him do sit ups as a baby. Behind me is Chappie, my faithful dog. Some would probably be unhappy with a dog for a Spirit but I''m not. Dogs are smart, faithful and kind. The downside with a dog is their short lives. But my Spirit will be with me in this life and the next. Dragging my heavy feet I finally open the door. "I''m home!" I say in a robotic tone. Yet right afterwards I hear something smash to the floor. Then like a bolt of lightning Emma shows up. Her expression immediately tells me I won''t be able to relax just yet. "Yo*sniff * y-you need to help *hiccup* m-me. *sniff* h-he has locked himself inside his room. I-I don''t know what t-to *hiccup* do.. He hates m..*sniff*e!" Hugging my panicking wife I wonder if every husband has to deal with this. "Calm down, tell me clearly what happend?" After a lot of crying, snott and self blame I finally have a somewhat clear picture of what happend. ''He still wants to go huh.. and why does he go to the library? He knows better than any of us how it is to be blind.'' Giving my wife a kiss on her cheek while she is hugging her white rabbit Spirit, I head towards my youngest son. After climbing the stairs and walking through a long hallway I arrive at his room. Standing there with a door in front of me I ponder over what to say... What do you even tell a child to make him give up on his dream? Sighing I''ll just tell the truth. Raising my hand to nock on the door I suddenly hear a faint voice from the otherside of the door. Stopping my hand I press my ear against the door. ".. the year... 467. The war conti.. inuud over a s..pan of 21 yers making it... on(?)e of the lon...gst wars in histor...u. The Fherian war en..dad when... King Xavius su..rremd..ered to save the liv..es of his citi..sens. Sa..cri..ficing his life for the life of m..anu, that''s wh..y he earnd the title ''The Sellf..less King''. The Ner..danian forces th..en..." The Fherian War. ''He is reading a history book!'' Clenching my hands I feel tears wanting to escape my eye lids. My son, has learned how to read! My blind son!!! Taking a step back from the door I feel newfound energy filling my body and mind. If my son has made it this far by himself. It''s my job as his father to take over from here. Walking back downstairs I whisle for Chappie. ''We are going to see the Master, James Silver.'' ----------- (Nero''s perspective) After hugging Haux for a long time I finally got my mind under control. Haux didn''t make a noise during all this time. Wiping my snott away, I smile a genuine smile towards my best friend. "Thanks Haux, you''re the best." Haux acknowledged my thanks with a small nod. Spreading electricity through my feet I sense my history book under my bed. My smile disappears and once again a determined expression forms on my face. ''I''ll show them. I''m not someone you pity, but someone you admire and envy!'' Forgetting my previous sadness I once again practice sensing words, keeping at it until I pass out from exhaustion. ------------- *Peck*... *Peck* "Aaaahhh stoop iit..." ... *Peck*.. *Peck*... *PECK* "Ouch! Okay okay I''ll wake up.. just five minutes please..." ... *Peck* *Sigh* "Good morning to you too Haux." Waking up I immediately start focusing on my surroundings. Blackness, and a bird with a massive amount of electricity inside him, his head, a few centimetres from my hurting forehead. When I''m alone I usually don''t open my eyes, as there''s no point in doing so. But when being around people they usually feel more comfortable if I look at them and speak. Spreading my ability throughout the room my attention gathers in the trash can. Sighing I walk to it and pick the broken rabbit sculpture up. ''Maybe I can fix it somehow.'' Even my thoughts sounds sarcastic. This book''s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. Feeling my stomach screaming for attention, I remember I didn''t eat any dinner last night. Changing clothes I put on a fresh t-shirt and some shorts. Heading towards the door I notice Haux isn''t following. Focusing on his form I ''see'' him. He is still standing beside my pillow looking at me. Haux can''t talk. But with our relationship I know when something is wrong or when he wants to tell me something. Focusing on his facial expression, it doesn''t take long before I flinch. He isn''t angry, sad or excited, no. It''s a new expression, one I haven''t seen on him before. An expression I am incredibly familiar with. Determination. He is determined. Determined to grow stronger, to improve, to help me achieve my dream. I don''t know what made him this determined but it warms my heart. Wanting to cry but feeling it would only ruin the moment I nod at him. Showing him a determined but somewhat shaky expression. Haux, seeing my nod spreads his wide wings which are flickering with billions of white sparks. The white sparks quickly increase in power until a point where the light pierces my mind like a trillion nails. Then suddenly my mind becomes clear, like a door which I didn''t even know about suddenly opened. Then I slowly sensed it. A whole world illuminates as I start sensing every corner of the whole mansion. My mom making breakfast, my sister secretly eating chocolate in her room. Slowly but surely I start sensing the small flowers growing on every tree branch in the garden. Even the morning dew on the grass starts sparkling like a sheet of small diamonds. Sensing this beautiful world I, for the first time in my life, feel pity towards ''normal'' people. Then it slowly fades away. The sparkling dew, the millions upon millions strands of grass, my sister eating chocolate, everything fades away until all I can sense is my room. But the feeling remains. The feeling not of sight, but of true sight. Like nothing could escape my ability. Ordinary sight is after all hindered by where you look or what''s in front of you. Mine is not. Now only a few random sparks could be ''seen'' flickering between Haux''s feathers. His domineering presence truly is worthy of being called a Heaven rank Spirit. ''If that is what''s waiting for me, I don''t care what I need to do. I will definitely achieve it.'' Haux, feeling satisfied once again flies to my shoulder, I don''t even need to use my ability to know what he is feeling, pride and excitement. I don''t know what he did to me. But my ability has obviously improved by leaps and bounds. Even the dirt underneath my bed doesn''t escape my ability anymore. Enjoying this new feeling of freedom, I head towards my mom in the kitchen. ... In the kitchen I sense Rina eating breakfast, her cat Spirit is scratching its body against a chair, very cat like. My mom immediately notices me. Without a moment of hesitation she dashes towards me. Her eyes glistening with uncontrolled tears Haux jumps of my shoulder exactly before the impact. Feeling my moms embrace my previous resentment towards her disappears like a fart in the wind. Lowering my head I burrow it in her chest. None of us say anything. Our feelings doesn''t need words to be expressed. After maybe a minute of silent hugging mom releases me. "Come and eat, I made your favourite." Taking a deep intake of air through my nose my eyes widen. "Pancakes!" Running towards my seat I sense a mountain of pancakes on the plate in front of me. ''I love you mom!!!'' Before digging in I give a pancake to Haux. Who immediately digs in. ... 7 pancakes later my dad joins us. His expression is full of smiles and he keeps taking secret glances my way. Sitting down, he steals on of my remaining pancakes. "Family, I have something to tell you." His words immediately gathers the attention of everyone present. Even Haux pauses his eating to look at him. "The Master has talked with the Spirit Academy''s representative living in the city of Neer, he has agreed to give Nero a chance to attend the Spirit Academy!" After his words an absolute silence envelopes the kitchen. The Spirit Academy? Who doesn''t want to attend the prestigious Spirit Academy? The one who breaks the silence is Haux who excitingly tackles my chest. Causing us both to fall to the ground. Yet the pain does not register. ''The Spirit Academy!!!'' Chapter 5 - The Pink Painted Claws Author''s Important message: As I mentioned in the foot note in chapter 2 a day ago. The border of his ability has changed to approximately 10 meters in all directions. This is because my math suc*cough* I felt he would progress to quickly otherwise. ----------- Who doesn''t want to attend the prestigious Spirit Academy but never gets the chance? The one who breaks the silence is Haux who dashes to my chest in excitement and happiness. Causing us both to fall over, but the pain doesn''t register. ''The Spirit Academy!!!'' Dad, seeing our stunned faces laughs loudly. "Hahahah pick up your jaws will you? I said he has been given a chance. He still needs to take a test in reading comprehension and mathematics. And Haux will also have to take a test." Hearing his words I finally get my grip on reality. ''Reading comprehension? Can I do it?'' Yet even when thinking this my whole body is shaking with excitement. Haux is also looking at dad with sparkling eyes. The only reason he wants to go to the academy is for my sake. But when it includes showing of his might... well, having seen his mock battles with Felix I know he loves it. "But.. but? What? How could you do something like that?! You know he can''t read! Why?... CHARLES?! STOP LAUGHING!" Only now did mom wake up from her daze. Seeing dad laughing while she''s panicking she snapped at him. "But Emma, he can read." Dad says with a beaming smile. When he said this everyone in the room turned their eyes towards me. Even Clair, the usually too pride full to care Spirit turned her head towards me. "Mom, I can only read a littl.." Before being able to finish my mom breaks down crying. Screaming at dad how he could''ve hidden such a thing. Turning my head towards Haux, I smile a smile so big my cheeks hurt. ------------ (Change of perspective) 12 hours before the news, in the City of Neer. Inside an office located on the top floor of a gigantic golden palace stands a man. The palace is decorated with thousands of carvings symbolising majestic creatures such as Dragons, Unicorns, Giants and winged humanoids. The middle aged man is wearing a light blue cloak with mysterious inscriptions seemingly making the surrounding air distort. In his hands is a letter with a silver stamp. "So Jamie finally wants to cash in that favor huh? But to want his servant''s son to get a chance to enter the Academy... either he has gone senile or the boy is... heh, seems like things just got interesting." After the crazy middle aged man finished talking with himself he suddenly flicked his sleeve. Not even a second after moving his arm a three meter long crack in space appear in front of him. The dark crack suddenly widens sucking in all light in the room. But inside the pure black rift a creature slowly emerge, shining so brightly the room lights up like a firework. A second later a leg made out of blazing fire steps out of the rift. Following the leg of fire is a head. A head completely made out of flames, with two seemingly inter-dimensional white horns shining with an otherworldly aura. "Aurora, I want you to inform our old gang that fourth bro is sending not one but possibly two sons this year." The majestic raindeer Spirit bows its head before turning around disappearing along with the black rift in space. The middle aged man, not in the least affected by the appearance of such a being slowly walks to the window of his office. With a view over the entire city of Neer he smiles while muttering. "You sly fox, so your second son didn''t die after all... to hide him even from us five brothers you really need a spanking, hahahahaah!" The crazy middle aged man continued to laugh like a mad man, scaring the birds who where silently resting on top of the palace roof. ------------ (Nero''s perspective) After the discussion with my family I decided to go on a walk with Haux on my shoulder. The invited Chosens living in the Xeria Empire are all gathering in the capital two months from now. Aspel is fairly close to the capital, so by riding a carriage I can probably get there in 4 weeks, 3 if I hurry. But I''m first going to the city of Neer to take the tests. Which is why I leave tomorrow morning. My little sister got an invitation from Eric to travel with him, which she immediately accepted. I guess there is some kind of charm a rich boy like him possess. Not even noticing it I entered the merchant area of Aspel. Stopping in the middle of the street I breathe in with my nose. The smell of freshly cut timber mixes with the smell of fresh food sold on the stands around me, all of which completely consumes my senses. I''ve never noticed how much I love this town. I was always hurrying, hurrying not to be seen, not to be pitied. But now? I''m leaving towards the Spirit Academy! I heard from dad that from Aspel there is only a total of 4 people including me who will be going to the Spirit Academy. That''s four out of approximately 200 six year olds! That''s two percent! If every township in the Xeria Empire sends four children there is already over 200 students! And that''s not included the countless villages, cities and the capital! Feeling my hands sweating and my pulse rising I smile a bright smile. Not noticing all the citizens staring at me in shock, I continue my walk. ... The day passed without me noticing and before I knew it I was back at home. Sitting by the table in the kitchen I sense my surroundings. Mom is crying while setting the table. Dad is reading the newspaper and Haux is flying around happier than ever with a cat grabbe... Is that Clair? Quickly forgetting what I just sensed I pretend as nothing is happening. But Clair''s desperate hisses still echoes throughout the kitchen/dining area. ''Rina is so going to snap at me... oh... who cares I''m leaving tomorrow!'' I think while still smiling brightly. ... My sister got home an hour later but I had already told Haux to let Clair down before she noticed. So with a sobbing mother, a traumatised kitten, a sister not understanding what''s wrong and two smiling idiots the feast slowly came to an end. ... The next morning I woke up before Haux. Seeing him sleep standing up I decide to take my revenge for yesterday. This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. A few minutes later I''m done. My majestic Spirit is no where to be seen. In his place is... el Hauxo, a bird with glasses, a "majestic" mustache and pink painted claws. Looking at my masterpiece I almost combust in laughter. Imagining his usually serious eyes combined with this... I almost stop breathing. ''Hahahahahah haahhh, I''m so glad my ability has improved... this is why I''m practicing everyday.'' I think to myself holding my tummy in a desperate attempt to not wake him up by laughing. "Nero, Haux! We are leaving soon, wake up and get something to eat!" Flinching I check if Haux woke up... ''He did...'' Haux is looking at me with a questionable look as if asking why I''m standing in front of him with a pink pencil in my hand. ... Then he notices them, the pink claws. Sensing Haux freeze on the spot I finally let out my laughter. "PHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA EL HAUXO HAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH..." Haux, understanding what has been done to him looks at me with a bit of killing intent in his gaze... yet... combined with his mustache and glasses... I completely collapse in laughter. Kneeling on the floor I try to control my laughter to breathe. But each time I almost grasp it, his expression pops up into my head... ''Haahhhh, El Hauxo...'' Haux has long ago started ignoring me but I can sense a few of his feathers sticking up in irritation. Taking a last laugh I stand up and walk towards my personal bathroom... while occasionally letting out a small laugh. Finding a small cloth I drench it in water before returning to Haux. While wiping away my masterpiece with a smile, I sense Haux''s expression. ''You will pay for this.'' Is the thought that pops up in my head when sensing his expression. Smiling faintly I turn my face towards him. "Hahh that''s what you get for pecking my forehead to wake me up." He does a bird shrugg (yeah it''s a bird shrugg). Before looking at the wet cloth with a tint of expectation. My smile widens slightly before I start cleaning his feathers as well. ... A few minutes later I''m finished. Haux is lying on my bed, asleep with pure bliss clearly written on his bird face. I quickly change out of my pyjamas and head down towards the kitchen. ... Inside the kitchen is my whole family. Everyone are gathered around the small table located in the middle of the far too large dining room. My mom is looking at me with both pride and sadness on her face. Dad is already drinking his morning coffee while Rina is combing the fur on Clair. Even Caden has skipped morning training to send me off. He looks at me with such a big smile you almost wonder who it is that''s going to the Spirit Academy. "Good morning little bro'', where is Haux?" Caden says while looking at my shoulder. "He is still sleeping." I answer with a smile. Sitting down I immediately start eating. My mom speaks enough for the five of us as she repeatedly reminds me to send letters and visit when I have time off. I answer everything with a nod and a smile. Afraid that my voice will crack if I speak, my mom just means to much to me. When the clock turns nine my father suddenly stands up. "Okay, we''ve delayed this far enough, we don''t have all the time in the world." He says the last part while facing mom who nods weakly. "What about my luggage?" I ask while putting a freshly baked piece of bread in my pocket. "We have decided to buy you new clothes, as you are going to grow taller during these upcoming years. You only need to pack a few clothes to change into during the travel towards the academy. We will send the rest." Answers my mom while looking at my pocket with a smile on her face. Not knowing what to say I head towards my room to pick up Haux and some clothes. ... Entering my room I spread my ability so it covers every corner. Quickly gathering everything I need I turn towards Haux. "Wake up we''re leaving!" I say while shaking him gently. Haux immediately awakes and without any delay jumps onto my shoulder. Giving him the freshly baked bread, he quickly starts gobbling it down. With a backback full of clothes and a bird on my shoulder I head towards my dad. ... Outside I quickly sense my dad talking with a horse carriage driver. Walking up to them I greet the driver named Jon. Talking with him I have my eyes opened facing his face. Jon doesn''t notice I''m blind at first but when he does I sense him frown. I''m used to it so it doesn''t bother me but a low voltage lightning bolt from Haux eased my heart a little bit anyways. Giving the slightly frightened Jon my luggage I step into the wagon. My family is gathered outside waving me and my dad off. Even Rina is there looking at me indifferently, but her just being here still feels kind of good. With a smile on my face I hug Haux who is sitting in my lap lightly. ''The first time leaving Aspel... I wonder how the outside world looks like." With a lash from the whip we head off! ''To Neer!'' ------------ On a balcony of the Silver estate are two figures silently watching the carriage leave through the gates. "Do you really believe he can read?" The woman asked, breaking the silence. "Charles has been with me throughout my life, he has never lied to me. It doesn''t matter if I believe he can read or not. I believe Charles." The tall, golden haired man answers indifferently. A long silence envelopes the two until the woman once again asks. "Have you noticed he doesn''t use a stick when he''s at home? He even knows where the carriage door is located.. could it be tha..." Before finishing speaking the middle aged man interrupts her. "It doesn''t matter, what''s done is done. He is not our son anymore." The golden haired man says with strong resolve clear in his voice, but looking closely enough you could see his hands clenching until his knuckles turn white... Author''s Note: Okay, the journey has officially started. I want to take this chance to thank you all for your wonderful comments. You may not know this but it really fills me with energy to write even more. This chapter is slightly longer than the previous ones. So don''t blame me if I use tomorrow to stock up on more chapters! Thanks for reading! Spirit Ranking System + Teaser It has come to my attention that some people have some questions regarding the Spirit ranking system. This is a thread meant to clarify some things. First let''s talk about regular spirits. Like all Spirits they are born without a rank. Growing up they usually end up between ''commoner'' and ''soldier'' rank. But with enough hard work and a strong spirit bond (will be explained in the Spirit Academy arc) they can reach the ''Emperor'' rank at best. Mythological spirits are however ''ranked''. For example the ''Heaven'' rank Golden Dragon. It is a spirit with the ''potential'' to reach the Heaven rank after growing up. This is, however not always the case. There are a lot of variables connected to which rank it''ll reach after growing up. These variables will be touched upon in the Spirit Academy arc so I don''t see the need to explain them now. But what I want to clarify is that even dragons are born without a rank or at the early commoner rank at best. The Ranking System goes like this: Unranked > Commoner > Soldier > Captain > Commander > General > Royal > Emperor > Heaven > Legendary > Ascension > ? ... How a spirit is ranked will also be explained in the Spirit Academy arc. Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon. Everything I explained in this thread is however not my (the author''s) words. But what is known in the world of Tariel... I hope this post will clear some things up for you guys! I''m sorry for my horrible explaining skills! You''ll have to bare with them until I find myself a proof reader! Next chapter will be posted tomorrow (I live in Japan)! Teaser down beloooooow: During the first few days of our journey all I did was sense what was happening around us. A new flower, a new insect everything seemed so interesting. ... Then it got boring... just sitting here for hours drains more mental energy than you think. Haux however is lucky, he can fly. So he usually flies away to find a mouse or some other small animal to gobble down. Sitting here I sense my father sleeping in front of me. His drool has been my only source of entertainment for hours... Sighing I start playing with my ability. ''Monarchy of Thunder'' is a name I thought up approximately a year ago. That day, there... See ya tomorrow c: Chapter 6 - The Three Foxes "It doesn''t matter, what''s done is done. He is not our son anymore." The golden haired man spoke with strong resolve in his voice. However, looking closely, one could see his hands clenching until his knuckles turned white... During the first few days of our journey all I did was sense our surroundings. A new flower here, a new insect there, everything was fascinating. ... Then it got boring... just sitting in the couch for hours drains more mental energy than one might think. Haux, however, was lucky. Being a bird, he could fly, so he usually roamed the skies looking for a mouse or some other small animal to gobble down. Sitting in the couch, I sensed my father sleeping opposite me. His drool had been my only source of entertainment for hours... A sigh escaped my mouth as I start playing with my ability. ''Monarchy of Thunder'' was a name I had thought up approximately a year before. That day, a storm hit Aspel. It was the first real storm I had seen in my life, and what happened left me almost brain dead. When the sky started generating electricity, I saw it! I saw the way electricity flows. I almost fried my brain by sensing so many details, but that gave me the idea to create my own ''electrical flow''. I could also send lightning bolts like Haux. But... it somehow felt like a waste of an incredible ability. Lightning is fast and powerful, and a lightning bolt is next to impossible to ''control''. All I could do was aim and fire. However, after seeing that flow of electricity the year before, I felt that there are so many more possibilities to this ability! Sensing the sparks of electricity jumping between my fingers, I sighed. ''If only it were that simple to create new techniques.'' Without anything else to do, I started whistling while playing with some sparks. ... Bandits were a problem for some Empires, but in Xeria things were a bit different. The reason for that was mainly the Order of Xeria. The Order was a group of Chosens and Regulars who had gathered together in order to seek evildoers and deliver punishment. They, alone, made up almost half of Xeria''s military power and they only answered to the Imperial family. My brother Caden was a disciple of a senior member of the Order. With the support of the Imperial family, they acted like harbinger of death, hunting down evildoers and not giving up until they came back with their heads. At times things went so far that they hunted bandits across the borders! Still, thanks to the Order of Xeria''s fame and their ''an eye for an eye'' policy, usually the military of the other empires closed an eye on them, unless they provoked them. Bandits are, after all, a pest in every empire. No one turns down free workforce. But where there is light there are shadows, and Xeria was simply too big to control, so of course there were some bandit gangs that decided to try their luck. However, the fact that in Xeria there are far less bandits than in other empires had already spread across the continent long ago. That was why we didn''t bother hiring guards. The road between Aspel and Neer was quite close to the Capital, so the chance of bandits attacking us was comparable to being hit by a snowball in hell. ... The journey progressed slowly, but after two weeks we finally arrived at the city of Neer. The first thing I had done when dad had said we were close was to focus my ability towards the city of Neer. During the two weeks of our travel, my ability had immensely improved. Whereas before I could ¡°see¡± in a radius of 10 meters, now it was almost 18 meters. However, the biggest change wasn''t the extended range, but the quality of my perception. Since that moment with Haux, my ability had improved by leaps and bounds. I didn¡¯t even have to focus anymore to sense the facial expressions of those around me. Also, being able to process more details had made it possible to increase my perception radius to approximately 100m, if I focused in one direction. That was why I was so shocked right then. Even with my 100 meters long scan it felt like I had barely scratched the surface of Neer. My perception of the world was gradually changing. The walls around Neer were supposed to be circular, but all I could sense was a straight wall. I could only imagine how big that city was. The carriage arrived at a gate guarded by six heavily armoured men, with their wolf and bear Spirits standing beside them. Comparing these guards to the ones in Aspel would have been like comparing war gods to some spoiled noble brats. Everything, from their appearance to their expression, screamed ''veterans''. Even the crowds leaving and entering the city paid their respect to the guards. Thanks to the stamp indicating that we were servants of the noble House of Silver, we entered without trouble. Some of the guards stared at Haux with caution, but he kept resting on the carriage roof as if worldly matters didn¡¯t concern him, not even bothering to open his eyes. "We will first head to the Three Foxes. It''s a tavern owned by Helia, your mother''s childhood friend. She has three daughters your age, so try to make some friends while we are there. Think of it as practice for the Academy, okay?" Dad said with a smile, his hand scratching Chappie behind his ear. I nodded in response, not really taking it to mind. ''I have never had friends before, why would I need one now?'' That was what I thought. In the meantime, Haux woke up. He immediately turned his gaze towards East, with a very rare expression of unease in his eyes. I immediately tried to sense what he was so concerned about. Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author. ''It''s too far away...'' I sighed, while retracting my ability''s range back to my normal radius. Though I could extend it to 17-18 meters, it was more comfortable not to sense unnecessary things. I kept playing with my sparks, waiting patiently to arrive at our destination. ... An hour later it seemed like we had entered the city center. The growing sea of people hindered the progress of our carriage, so we bid our farewells to Jon and continued on foot. Spreading my ability to the maximum, I sighed. If it weren''t for Haux intentionally scaring away people I would have probably drowned in this sea of people. I pretended Haux was leading me, a sort of ¡°guide bird¡±. We earned a few curious gazes but they quickly turned away. I guess a blind boy wasn¡¯t as unusual there. My father, seeing my difficulty, grabbed my hand before picking up the pace. ... Ten minutes later we arrived in front of a five floor tavern. An engraving, depicting three baby foxes playing with each other, stood above the entrance. - The Three Foxes - Was carved in neat cursive script on a sign hanging beside the entrance. After entering I had to immediately cover my ears. ''God! What a loud atmosphere!'' Haux seemed to have the same problem as he dug his head into my jacket. "HELIA! YOUR BIG BRO IS HERE!" My dad screamed even louder, with a smile on his face. ''Big bro? But I thought she was a childhood friend?'' The atmosphere turned silent for a few seconds and many stared at dad, gazes filled with curiosity, anger and... envy? However, like a tsunami, the loud atmosphere once again enveloped the tavern. Only three people remained focused on us. Or rather, three children my age. One of them ran away through a door behind the bar. The other two kept looking at us as if... *Flinch* Rubbing Haux''s feathery back I tried to calm him down. ...as if we were a pair of thieves, they appeared hostile and ready to chase after us. Their expression was unmistakable. Dad didn¡¯t seem to have noticed them as he continued to smile while frantically looking around. I would have asked him what he was doing if it hadn¡¯t been for the fact that I was pretending not to know him right then. The noisy atmosphere persisted until a lady entered the lobby/dining room. Her movements were graceful and even I, a six years old kid, could sense she was a real beauty, one for which people would wage wars. But when she saw dad I sensed her heartbeat accelerate. Her expression didn¡¯t show it, but I was afraid she''d have a heart attack if it continued like that. Dad smiled brightly at the sight of her. "Ahahahah! Helia, how can you still look the same after all these years?" Dad said while shaking his head. "SUCH IMPUDENCE! HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TOWARDS THE LADY LIKE THAT!" Only then did dad notice that basically every man inside the lobby was staring at him with the intent to squash him on the spot. Before dad got the chance to answer, the Lady did. "Maggot, why are you speaking?!" She said with an icy tone to the man who had just spoken. Yet... his pulse... no, scratch that, every man in his nearest proximity pulse went completely haywire. Sensing the electricity gathering in his lower body and his...... I quickly stopped focusing on the electricity. ''I-It is that, r-right...? The thing w-which happens t-to grown-ups... D-dad said it was a... a natural thing... r-right?'' Still thinking I had sensed something I shouldn''t have, I turned my attention onto Helia. After glaring daggers at the guy who raised his voice, she once again turned towards dad. "Charles, you look awful. It''s probably that hag¡¯s fault.. hmph. She told me you where coming but I didn''t think you would have the balls to show up." Helia said this with an indifferent tone, but her heart was still beating rapidly... like when you secretly take an extra piece of chocolate when no one is looking... but I couldn¡¯t sense any chocolate on her... that was weird. My dad, not affected by her words, just kept smiling. "Ahhh, don''t call my wife a hag... where is the cute little girl who ran around calling me onii-chan everyday?" After dad spoke I heard everyone gasp. Their pulse seemingly stopping completely. Their looks towards dad slightly changing with a feeling of respect. ''Onii-chan? What''s that? Must be some foreign word, I''ll ask dad later.'' But Helia was completely silent. Yet, her heart was beating so fast I worried it might burst through her chest. Just sensing it made my own heart hurt. "Oh, her? She disappeared when you left saying you had fallen in love and didn¡¯t come back to visit until 20 years later." She spoke while smiling, but I recognised it: a forced smile. One I often wore when my ''friends'' teased me thinking I didn''t see anything... My dad''s smile disappeared. And an awkward silence enveloped the lobby. Then, the Lady shook her head and smiled. "Enough of this. We haven''t seen each other for years. Let¡¯s catch up privately, I don''t want to disturb my customers." A few people opened their mouth as if wanting to say something. But they were all quickly hushed by their friends. ''Seriously, what''s going on?'' I thought with a frown. Dad, noticing my expression, put his hand on my shoulder and began to smile. "Sure, let''s go." Dad walked in front of me, following Helia. Haux returned to his original position and looked at me as if to ask what was happening. Sensing that, I felt some relief in not being the only one who did not understand. Noticing a lot of people looking at me, I quickly picked up my pace and followed dad. Chapter 7 - The Lingering Warmth of Love Dad walks in front of me following Helia. Haux has once again returned to his original position. He looks at me as if not understanding. Sensing this I feel some relief that I''m not the only one not understanding. Noticing a lot of people looking at me I quickly pick up my pace following dad. After entering the private room behind the bar the loud atmosphere once again hits the lobby like a wave. Focusing my ability on the private room I would describe it as cosy. Two couches, three armchairs and a low wooden table. The window is facing the south so I guess the afternoon sun should be visible from here. Outside the window is a garden with flowers resembling roses. Yet their size are bigger than sunflowers. Sitting down on a leather armchair covered with somekind of animal fur I immediately feel the fatigue from the journey hit me. Haux, noticing my wellbeing decides to do the same and lands in the armchair next to me. Wiggling a bit to get comfortable he practically fell asleep instantly. Knowing that this isn''t our final destination I bite my lower lip to keep myself from falling asleep. Feeling that I''ve memorised the room I stop sending out electricity in my surroundings. In the room there''s a total of 12 living beings. Me, Haux, Dad, Chappie, Helia, A squirrel, three girls whispering with each other and three baby foxes sniffing at the armchair Haux is sleeping in. My dad is sitting on the last armchair with Chappie lying on his feet. Helia sits on the coach facing him. The three girls are sitting to the left of her shooting glances at my dad every once in a while. Me and Haux are occupying the armchairs to the left of dad. Haux is sleeping on the armchair closest to Helia. "Jen can you go fetch us some tea. Oh and put on some coffee, you still drink coffee right Charles?" Asks Helia. Her previously cold tone has disappeared leaving a mature motherly tone. My dad smiles at Jen while answering. "While yes I do, but aren''t you going to introduce these three lovely girls first?" Hearing this Helia''s previously controlled heartbeats once again start racing. "Oh.. yeah of course... girls introduce yourself to uncle Charles." Hearing this the three girls stands up. "Nice to meet you uncle Charles. My name is Jennifer. I''m 7 years old and my Spirit is the red fox named Cecil." Says the tallest one of the three. Her voice is neither soft nor harsh but somewhere in the middle. Her posture is straight and her body is neither skinny nor obese. Everything about her nearly screams ''normal''. One of the foxes turned to look at her after hearing its name being called. After finishing, the shortest of the three girls was about to clap her hands but the second tallest stopped her. After stopping her younger sister she straightened her posture but her heart was clearly beating abnormally quickly. "Nice to meet you uncle Charles. My name is Florence and I''m 6 years old. My Spirit is the white fox named Sylvia, she is a Frostbite Fox. Her voice was a bit shaky but she didn''t let it crack. The last part of the introduction was obviously filled with pride. But I can''t blame her, I''m proud of Haux as well. "Hihihhih my name is Sarah and my favourite hobby is drawing. Mama says that I can draw really pretty! Oh, and I''m 5 years old! My best friend is our neighbour Elin but my super best friend is Recka. The brown fox with a white spot on its head! Look the one looking at me right now! Her fur is reaaally soft and when I sleep she always warms my feet. But Charles why aren''t you as cool as mama told us you would be she also said...*BAAM*" "Ah, s-sorry Sarah I think we n-need to hurry. They are undoubtedly tired from their journey." Helia interrupted her while accidentally kicking the table when standing up. Her heartbeat is basically audible from where I am. She avoided looking at dad as much as possible, who is grinning from ear to ear. His eyes are a glistening with tears. *Cough* Clearing his voice dad looks at the girls with a smile reaching his eyes. "Nice to meet you all, to think Helia would have such pretty daughters! My name is Charles but you can continue calling me uncle Charles. Your mom and I made a pact when we where small to forever be as close as a brother and sister. That''s why she is my little sister." Turnings his eyes towards me he continues. "And this is my son Nero! Introduce yourself will you?" Hearing this I sensed Helia''s face turn sour. "Can''t you see he has fallen asleep? You obviously nee.." She stops talking when I opened my eyes staring at her as I stand up. Turning my gaze towards the girls I smile. "Nice to meet you Aunt Helia, Jennifer, Florence and Sarah. As my father said, my name is Nero Black and I''m 6 years old. My Spirit is called Haux, the birdie sleeping over there." A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation. I say while pointing at the armchair beside me. "His feathers are also really soft! And he loves when people massage them." I finish before nodding towards the wide open mouthed Helia and the girls, especially Sarah who is looking at Haux with stars in her eyes. After finishing I turn my face towards dad who thankfully understands my expression. "Yeah, as your mother said we are both really tired so we will continue catching up tomorrow. Helia I presume you have a room for us?" "I-I e-eh, yes.. Yes of course! Jen my darling can you lead them to room number 34. The keys should be in the third box." Helia pulled from her daze completely lost her composure. Looking at me with an apologetic expression. I smiled at her before she continued talking with dad. ... Jen led us towards room 34 occasionally taking a glance my way with a curious expression. After arriving we thanked her for the trouble and dad gave her a silver coin to buy some sweets for her and her sisters. Jen, almost crying tears of happiness quickly dashed off towards her sisters. ... While preparing for bed, dad complimented me on my introduction but I didn''t take it to heart. Answering that it was because they where his friends and that he was there with me... Dad just smiled and told me I just need to imagine him always being there. In my pyjamas I quickly fell asleep while sharing my bed with Haux. ----------- (Florence''s perspective) After finishing my introduction I mentally sighed with relief. Mother told me that the first impression is really important so I''m glad I didn''t mess it up. Looking at Charles I can''t figure out what makes him so special, the way mom described him is completely different from what is in front of me. He has wrinkles covering his face and his black hair has a few strands of white. Sure he was probably handsome when he was younger but now he only looks like an old man.. When Sarah started giggling her first few words I immediately did a mental facepalm. She is always too energetic... And then I understood it. Why mom likes this man. His smile. When he heard about how mom has mentioned him as cool I immediately became entranced. A smile so bright it almost left me blinded... even his wrinkles perfectly fitted his smiling face. When he started talking about how he and mom made a pact when they were smaller I tried to seem curious... but after hearing it from my mom so many times it has gotten somewhat old. "And this is my son Nero! Introduce yourself will you?" Turning my gaze towards the boy addressed as Nero I see a young boy sleeping in my armchair. His chaotic white hair has somehow found a neat order in all those strands sticking out. "Can''t you see he has fallen asleep? You obviously nee.." Mom, saying what''s on our my minds suddenly stop. I didn''t see it at first, the boy just stood up in a calm manner while looking calmly at mom. Then he turned his gaze towards us and I saw them. His eyes. Two sky blue eyes without any pupils... Yet looking into his imperfect eyes, his calm demeanour and dignified posture making him seem older than he is I unconsciously blush profoundly. Only when he starts talking about his Spirit''s soft feathers do I snap out of my daze. ''Heh, seems like Sarah''s found a new toy...'' I think while looking at the sleeping bird. But then I saw something that made me sharpen my gaze. ''Was that a spark?'' Turning my attention on the calmly smiling Nero my face turns a shade redder. ''He''s a Chosen? Like me??'' Then his dad tells us that they are tired. And I reluctantly watch them walk away. Seeing big sis shooting glances at Nero while blushing I feel... jealous? ''No way!'' Signaling for Sylvia I sit down on my armchair.. Feeling the lingering warmth left behind by Nero my ears turns hot. Embarrassed I quickly lift up Silva. Burying my face in her fur... ''.. his hair also looked like this.'' I think while not knowing why I''m smiling. ...hugging Sylvia I curl up in the armchair. Savouring the last bit of warmth still left... While hugging Sylvia I failed to notice my mom looking at me with a nostalgic yet somewhat sad smile on her face. Author''s Note: Got my first negative review today! Feels kind of sad but I guess everyone can''t like my work. I''m currently pondering over if I should stop posting chapters until I''ve found a proof reader. As it clearly is a problem. I also accidentally deleted this chapter before posting today... (I''m writing on a smartphone) I was originally planning on posting two chapters today as this one is more a introduction of Florence. So sadly I''m too tired to post another one. Peace out every!
