《Wolf Continues On》 Prologue Prologue A four legged behemoth walks silently through the forest, large frame and white fur discouraging any animal from approaching. The vicious teeth leaving globs of saliva, that become one with the ground. The alpha wolf¡¯s nose perked slightly. It picked up on the scent of food. Eyes glinting with a savage coldness as the paws spring against the dirt floor, leaving a trail of freshly dug up dirt. A white streak almost indistinguishable between the falling snow, flashed through the forest trees. Winds began to wail, as torrents upheaved leaves from the dirt. The surroundings changed with every passing of the white wolf. The White had descended the mountain forestry, into an unfortunate village. ¡°50 coppers for a freshly skinned fox pelt!¡± ¡°40 coppers!¡± ¡°30 coppers, plus rabbit meat¡± Obnoxious voices of the human population tarnished the wolf¡¯s ears, as it himself continued to proceed to that village, without any fear of danger. Wood choppers and gatherers that found their wage outside the meager village walls, stood frozen in fear from the presence of the monster that came charging towards them. The animal too large for them to comprehend, it was not the monthly elk that they hunt. Nor is it the usual wolf that reaches the kneecaps of the larger adults, but¡ This beast reached the hips, and was as wide as a door! ¡°WOLF!¡± A child started shouting, frantically raising her small voice each time she glanced at the wolf. But suddenly, her ghastly screams penetrated the villager¡¯s ears no more. The beast was already among them. After skewering the little girl with a swipe of it¡¯s sharp talon-like paws, he looked longingly at the meat that laid itself unmoving before him. The White was not like a usual wolf who hunts small, but a veteran of great slaughter and the cause of countless homes being destroyed. ¡°Everyone-¡± A person too naive and foolish, tried to calm the villagers with his back turned against an apex predator. The man got the quick death that he wished for. Not long before the sun would start to fall, the village had started to become almost-silent, where only hoarse breathing of the still living could be heard. The villager¡¯s deaths were captured by the savage eyes of the white beast, as he took a satisfied glance around him. Bodies lay sprawled on the crimson death bed, surrounding the white monster from all sides. The beast himself, an axe protruding from his broad back and sharp sticks glittering his body in whole. But as an animal of nature who struggled for survival, the numbness to pain came naturally. As he raised his head from the treasure surrounding him, an arrow soared through the air. A glint of sadness, regret and guilt flas-- Thunk ¡°It really was a good idea to wait it out¡± A battle-hardened man trudged out of a hut with a silver crossbow in hand. ¡°I have been waiting for seven good years for this. Ever since you killed my hope, love, future...I have been dreaming of this day, but on this journey for vengeance I noticed one thing...you were not lucky to have been born on the same world as us. But as the cycle of life goes, may you rest peacefully in hell¡¡± He slowly massaged his teary eyes with his finger as he looked at the dying wolf¡¯s last moments. A pained growl escaped from the massive fur, before its feet buckled and it fell to the floor. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Crossbow bolt stuck out from the wolf¡¯s head. 000 Everything turned a beautiful pitch black, a clear black without impurities. The wolf felt refreshed, as his endless hunger and thirst quenched at last. The darkness started to crack as light made its way in through the crevices, eventually the darkness dissipated in the same manner frost vanishes from a leaf if moved. The different light that appeared, blinded the wolf for a few moments. But seemingly the wolf was unalarmed and not in a state of distress or fright, but in a strange state of calmness. As if the sudden change did not surprise him at all. ¡°Welcome to the reincarnation centre ZX1. I must congratulate you for being extremely lucky to have gotten this station. Since only a single soul is usually granted to be placed-back from this centre once every billion years, so it¡¯s almost impossible to enter this centre since the benefit is keeping memories from your pr..evious...life?¡± A flat tone spoke from an unknown direction, but almost sounded off like it had spoken from inside his own mind. ¡°A beast soul?¡± The place surrounding White cracked open, as if accompanying the astonished voice, once again revealing the perfect pitch-black darkness underneath the light. However, the light slowly rejoined to shut out the darkness almost like a spider fixing its web. ¡°I¡¯ll give this puppy a little test, be prepared.¡± Slowly a wavy stream of blue colour appeared in front of White and entered him, it joined slightly before jolting outside of him and back into the timeless space and disappearing. ¡°Hoho...I know exactly the place to put you in, and going by your savage nature, this should be fairly interesting. Or it might be extremely boring...¡± The voice cut off, seemingly in thought before continuing: ¡°It seems you are just a regular beast, unintelligent and the silent type, nothing to be cautious of. So during this life, you should learn how to speak and gain some intelligence of your own.¡± As the voice gradually disappeared, White¡¯s form; a floating mist of grey, began to shrink in size rapidly. ¡°Have fun and good luck, may this time you be successful in finding your true path and meaning in life.¡± Then the floating grey mist became almost nonexistent, but not before something extraordinary happened. ¡°B...ye¡± An old and ancient voice resounded across the emptiness, in an almost tyrannical manner. A sudden gasp escaped the mouth of the monotonous speaker. White had said a word; spoken not in a growl and nor by using his teeth to get his point across. But by connecting the dots of his past life; the sights of humans opening their mouths and high pitched noises coming out. White had remembered all of it clearly, how could he not. The female mother opened her jaw whilst staring intently at the offspring, her farewell brought about an unparallelled atmosphere of sadness. ¡°Bye, my dear one¡±. And then, White was gone from that white sphere of space. A faint streak of blue appeared in the center of where White was previously situated. Slowing to a halt, the blue streak stopped and transformed into a transparent image of a woman of great beauty. The lips parted where the tongue swirled across the tips of her teeth, her face revealed a relaxed manner. ¡°Thankfully, he was sent into that world¡± Chapter 1: Savage Eyes; Hungry Heart Chapter 1 - Savage Eyes; Hungry Heart ¡°I can see his head, just one more push!¡± My husband shouted loudly, full of excitement. I just wish he would calm down for at least a minute. ¡°I am trying, so stop talking already!¡± I tried to shut him up. I can¡¯t afford to think right now otherwise I will faint. But even when I try so hard to push the baby out, he or she still doesn¡¯t budge an inch. So stubborn. This one will most likely be a headstrong one, unlike the brothers and sisters. That should give some nice suggestions for the name: something that includes the meaning of determination and resistance should be a good suit for this one. Or if it¡¯s a boy: a simple name like Gerald would do. Gerald Junior, named after his dad. But if it¡¯s a girl, then something cute and majesti- I felt something move just now! I believe the baby decided to leave its home and reveal itself to me. Please God, be a girl. ¡°The baby!¡± Gerald shouted straight into my ear. ¡°Sister, is it a boy or a girl?¡± I asked little sis, who was currently holding the calm newborn baby. Calm baby? The last ones were screaming their lungs out...unless there is something wrong with this one. No! Tha..t can¡¯t be. ¡°H...ey! Mary, don¡¯t fall asleep!¡± Gerald once again demonstrated his loud voice. But, his voice began to lose it¡¯s power¡ 000 Seems like this baby was too much for my dear wife to handle, unlike the previous ones. And she had never fainted after giving birth before, she is always a strong woman so I know there shouldn¡¯t be much to worry about. However, seeing her faint for the first time like this does no good for my heart. I really hope she is well and fine. ¡°Flare?¡± I stare at my sister-in-law¡¯s serious face. It is rare for her to show one, so she must be emotionally moved by what has transpired before her. But right now, I am more eager to know the gender of the baby. Hopefully it¡¯s a boy. There is already too many girls in the house, compared to boys. Two guys including me, against four needy women including Mary. It¡¯s a bit of a mouth full to be honest. But I really wouldn¡¯t mind a girl either. We need women in this dying place, and most of all excluding the village. Humanity really needs women, who can carry on our race. But in the end unless some miracle happens, we will most likely¡No, I shouldn¡¯t think about the future. I should cherish the present even more, if the future is like that. I should start showing more love to my daughters from now on. ¡°Gerald, there is no need to start crying like a girl. Mary is fine, she just fainted a little.¡± Flare¡¯s mocking voice returned along with her naturally mischievous face. Women. They never understand what you are thinking about, and there is no way that I cried. It must have been the sweat dripping down, as it is unusually warm in this room. ¡°I was speaking about the baby. Is it a boy or a girl?¡± I tried to sound as frustrated as possible, just to show her that I have no time to waste. I need to go back to work soon. But in the arms of Flare, the baby looked so strange, as you wouldn¡¯t think she would be carrying a baby. But I guess people change over time. ¡°I can¡¯t really tell. Is a baby not supposed to cry from birth?¡± 000 After 1 year ¡°Atarneus, why do you always stare at me like that?¡± I whispered in his ear really quietly. It would be awkward if I asked him out loud, as he can¡¯t even think for himself yet. But, I think there is something different about my one year old brother. I think he can understand me. ¡°Spring, stop pestering Atarnu, he doesn¡¯t seem happy.¡± Said Mother, who was currently knitting a pair of socks for the weird one. She should just focus more on her knitting than me, it¡¯s important to do the only thing she can. She doesn¡¯t even trust me: a sensible fourteen year old lady. I won¡¯t hurt him or anything, and I know how to control myself unlike Gate. But anyway, I really think he can understand what I am saying. One time, I told him to look over here. It was little Autumn¡¯s fifth birthday and everyone was having a splendid time; chatting and singing loudly. Atarneus was sitting playing with his hands at the other side of the room, together with big sis Flare. He was around eleven months old and he spent most of his time sleeping, accompanied with the daily feeding. At the time I had already had some suspicions about him, as I was the one usually playing with him. His every action and movement did not seem to be of a child''s, he moved his limbs with a purpose. Seated furthest away from him and almost inside the other corner of the room, I whispered softly: ¡°Atarnu, I am coming to get you.¡± But it was just to test out a scenario I had in my head. His little head turned at a speed I thought impossible. I might have passed it off as a vivid imagination, if it weren¡¯t for the cold sweat that dripped down my head. I could still remember his cold penetrating eyes staring right through me. His right eye had been colored a savage red, and everything turned black around him. He made me feel small and weak, but I kept on thinking that something like that did not happen. And I still do, even a month later. ¡°Why is Atarnu not sleeping like Gate?¡± I asked in the nicest way possible. Gate is already two years old, and he is sleeping way more than Atarneus. Wouldn¡¯t that cause some problems later on for Atarneus? ¡°Spring¡± Mother¡¯s squeaky voice sounded off behind me. No doubt it is about me and not Atarneus, so I might as well ignore her and annoy her. Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more. Currently, the boy who is too tall for his age is stretching his legs in a funny way, so maybe he will start walking soon. I hope he doesn¡¯t, as it is really calming to see how seemingly laid back he is with no worries in the world. And if he starts walking, that would mean he might go somewhere that is dangerous like the kitchen. I wish everyone in this family was like that, relaxed and enjoying their life. They are too serious all the time. But that is because it¡¯s the way things are. ¡°Spring, go and put Atarnu to sleep¡± ¡°Yes, Mother.¡± She can put him to sleep herself, since she isn¡¯t doing anything anyway. But I guess I¡¯ll do this one favour for her. I still respect her as a mother after all. Getting up off the straw, and bending over. I lifted the heavy Atarneus and placed him to one side of my chest, which is definitely soft and comfortable for Atarneus, and it also makes the load lighter for me in a way. Walking out the room, I took a glance at the grinning person who was knitting in a deliberately slow manner. And it was not until I took two steps out the room that I heard a released giggle from behind me. She really has no appreciation for my countless helpings. Looking at Atarneus perched closely into me, I couldn¡¯t help but lightly nibble on his ear because of his defenselessness. A lost hope in wanting to see a different facial expression on him: he simply stared at me with his big round eyes. His ear soft and squishy, it might become a habit to do this to him, but not that I would hate it. I walked straight past the room Gate and Autumn were sleeping in, and where Atarneus should be sleeping. But they are already awake. Whenever Atarneus is going to sleep, the others would rouse awake as if by pure coincidence. But it¡¯s not coincidence, Atarneus is doing something to them and I know it. My room is getting closer and closer, so I let my smile break loose. Atarneus moved his head slightly, nudging my shoulder lightly with his body. His eyes fixed on the front door of the house, it made me turn around to look at it. But nothing was there, and nothing beyond. Dad has been gone for almost a month already and Crystal has not yet returned from the school in the capital. The premonition that something bad might come charging through the door, gave me shivers and my legs would have buckled if I did not turn around. Walking into my room I was greeted with a misfortunate surprise. Crystal has returned. ¡°Why are you taking that one into your room?¡± Her voice had changed, and her experience traveling to the capital probably had something to do with it. ¡°My brother likes to sleep more comfortably in this room.¡± I replied, not revealing the name of the boy I was carrying. Crystal is around eighteen years old, and has been attending a private school in the capital. The only reason she was able to go there is because the whole family, plus others, provided the money to her. She left around my age without saying goodbye to anyone. She took our money, slapped us in the face and ran away. If she doesn¡¯t know what has happened with this village in her absence, then it is her responsibility to find out. ¡°So what is his name?¡± She asked with a mocking tone. She had not changed at all. ¡°Please leave, I need to put my brother to sleep.¡± I replied in a nice way, just to show her she wasn¡¯t the only one to change. ¡°Isn¡¯t he a little big for his age?¡± She asked, moving in front of me and halting my advance. She stood in front of me with her hands on her hips, it felt like I was looking at a mountain. She has changed. ¡°What are you talking about?¡± I replied, trying to not sound weak. If she tried something right now with her massive frame, I don¡¯t think I could stop her. I also got Atarneus in my arms, so right now I definitely don¡¯t stand a chance against her. ¡°A one year old child shouldn¡¯t look like a five year old. I just got surprised that is all. But you on the other hand have not changed at all, still a weak girl. And still not destined to get anywhere in life.¡± She stated the truth from her intelligent mind. Her words clear as day, to remind me of my position. ¡°Sorry wise Sister, Atarneus needs to sleep. Please catch up on matters with mother.¡± I told her with shaky legs. What happened to her, for her to change into this mountain? Her feet moved past me with a giggle, and I let out a sigh of relief as I heard the door close. 000 In this dark room with only candlelight as warmth, I lay powerless to the world that changes around me every day. I gained sisters as wells as fiends to accompany me in my growth. My mother is gentle like the morning breeze, and my father is like a viper who lost its sense of direction. Creak The danger arrived together with the noise of the front door opening¡The short lived life of intelligence is now going to end, if I don¡¯t act. I stood on my two feet, and left my sister¡¯s warmth as I headed towards the gargantuan door. I need to act quickly. Extending my legs and balancing my weight on the tiptoes, I reached for the door handle and levered it down, carefully shifting my balance to accommodate the action. Down the dark hallway I saw the savage red eyes I once had, staring straight at me. Chapter 2: First Wave Chapter 2 - First Wave ¡°Everyone get up!¡± The shouting scream jolted me awake from that pleasant dream, it was about Atarneus running around in a field of white flowers. I have no idea what is going on, but it can¡¯t be good. The familiar voice of my father in a state of anger made me unwilling to question against his tyrannical shouting. Father had returned home with bad news it seems. Throwing mother¡¯s knitted blanket away from me, I reached towards Atarneus¡¯ sleeping back. My eyes were still locked onto my father¡¯s demonic appearance, through the open door of my room. I grasped the place Atarneus¡¯ is sleeping at, in order to wake him. He is quite a heavy sleeper in the first place, and only awakes on his own accord. However, this matter is extremely urgent and sleep comes after it. My hand touched only the straw that was placed on the floor. He wasn¡¯t there. I retracted my gaze from father¡¯s presence and looked beside me. ¡°Atarneus is missing!¡± I screamed as loud as possible. The hurried and panic-stricken movements within the house turned frozen. Everyone slowly waded towards my room like snails with eyes that seemed dead inside. ¡°Weren¡¯t you with him, how could he have gone missing?¡± Crystal stated the facts. I looked at mother for help, but she just looked at me with hatred filled eyes. Her heart frozen in ice, and her gaze were blades that slashed me open. Atarneus is gone, and the mother I once knew, is gone too. It¡¯s how things are: if someone is reported missing, their most likely dead. I am blamed for the unknown death of my brother. ¡°We need to move, now!¡± My father broke the moment of silence with a calm shout. His calmness showed that he did not care one bit, even if everyone in the house died. ¡°Bear!¡± A scream from our neighbours only made us move that much quicker, as we left the house and ran like mad. Father, -the village guard- spared no glance towards the bear that split apart our neighbours bodies. The first wave has begun, and already the village is no more. ¡°Get to the base, hurry!¡± Father rallied people into a stampede, as we followed closely in fear. We met friends on the way, and overheard grave news repeatedly. Chaos has fallen. But the pain is not leaving my heart. Atarneus is gone. The masks that covered the faces of the villagers fell, revealing their true nature. As they started to swear, shove and punch in hopes of getting to safety faster. Patience lost and ripped from them by the beasts that invaded the village. There is no way a person can be calm in the face of one of these, unless he is already one of them. A devastated cry for help broke out from the back of the crowd, someone is being ripped apart. The beasts have come, but the defenders have ran. Father is running alongside us, hiding his suit of arms by his home clothes. The gallant father who rallied us in the first place, has fallen to fear. Like the rest of us. Running away from danger made me feel safer, and knowing that we are going to the base I felt thankful to be alive. I am able to experience these kinds of feelings; fear, danger, excitement. I am filled with excitement, along with fear. I look to the side and see Crystal carrying both Gate and Autumn. Her face distorted in anger, and her arms rippling with muscle. She caught me staring at her, so she turned her head and looked at me with hateful eyes. ¡°Don¡¯t make eye contact with me you slug. You killed the one with potential, so I will see you become a whore in the future.¡± She stated loud enough for anyone to hear. But no one showed any disgust and simply nodded their heads, as they kept running. My future is set. No tears emerged from the eyes of the little one¡¯s, and their faces calm. Soon, outside the fortress we saw Flare adorning a set of knightly armour with a sword and shield, being commanded by an officer. The troops were said to be around one hundred, but only a handful of heads could be seen currently. I looked to father who is going to join them. But, he only lowered his head and covered it in a dirt cloth. His eyes looking a different direction. He fears the thought of dying on a field and not living another day. We all do. ¡°Men, defend the fort and rally all the villagers, then get them underground. We only have five minutes left before the next wave, so we need to clear them o...¡± We ran straight past the old swordsman and into the hardened building, like scared rats. People are going to fight against the endless waves of beasts, whilst we grin happily knowing we don¡¯t need to lift a finger. We just need to run from danger, and it will keep us alive. Looking around, I saw my father dispersing into a dark corner together with countless men. They are all ¡°defenders¡± of our home, the place we cherish and fight for. But I don¡¯t see anyone with the will to fight against the beasts. The dark ashen faces of everyone in here is evident that this village is a goner. ¡°Spring, where is Atarnu?¡± A sweet voice broke the tension of my thoughts, it was an unpleasant disturbance. Atarneus? I look down and see the person who called out, it was Autumn. Her face still calm with a fiery determination in her eyes to know my answer, I will tell her and explain everything to her. Hopefuly, she will stop distracting me...but, Atarneus is dead. I doubled over from the pain in my heart, I need to get away from this pain. Need to change my mind in order to rid this pain. The triggers always happens when his name appears. ¡°Are you okay?¡± Autumn rubbed my back with her smooth hands. I sat myself upright, I don¡¯t need help from anyone younger. I look at Autumn, her face not showing any worry for me. Why is she still calm? We are going to die soon, the underground won¡¯t save us. Why do you remind me of him? You are too calm for a kid, just like him. Has he affected you too? ¡°Atarneus has died, he was slain by the beasts at night.¡± I told her seriously, in an attempt to make her cry and get rid of her. I need to think hard, I don¡¯t need distractions. ¡°Then what are we doing here?¡± She asked again, her voice still calm but her eyes revealing. Tears streamed down her face like a waterfall. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Her resolution is amazing, but her questions are stupid. They should just be left¡her question. What am I doing here? Saving myself. What will I achieve by staying here? Eventually, it will be death. I ran towards the corner filled with armed men, and bumped into a familiar body. My hands went to work during it, going underneath his dirty rags and gripping the hilt of the sword. ¡°Spring?¡± I made eye contact with his fear-swollen face, hideous. Turning my knees, I unsheathed the sword with a swift movement, almost like a leaf floating accordingly to the wind. His reactions extremely slow, the hand reached out too late, it was evident he had already figured out what I was doing. I charged towards the front entrance with swift feet, easily maneuvering around the horde of people. I can fight for my life. The light from outside shined onto me, giving me a spotlight as I reinforced my determination and resolution. The doors closing ever so slightly made my mind go into chaos, am I really going to do this? I have to do this, I need to. For Atarneus, the child who changed my life in only one year, his every glance gave me something. It was the passion to live life to the full. A glance shouldn¡¯t be able to do that, but it was something I experienced first hand to be wrong. Atarneus was destined for greatness, and he gave us that feeling. If he hadn¡¯t died, maybe he could have changed the world. My last steps within the fortress were the slowest steps I have ever taken. I am sure I was going the same speed, but the world began to slow down. I felt everything as it should be felt, and saw things I haven¡¯t seen before. However, if only for a mere second, it that was enough to get a glimpse. I felt the cobblestone walls, and the wooden doors. Information flashed through my mind. I saw their life, and how they ended up like that. The doors came from the surrounding forest trees, carved into the structures they are now by men with big hammers and chisels. The cobblestone was mined out from a far of land where beasts were abundant, the place where beasts multiplied by the thousand every day. The sword in my h~ I experienced the profoundness of the world through these eyes, only for a little bit. ¡°Spring, I didn¡¯t know you were capable of this.¡± A voice slithered into my blissful moment. I turned my head and saw Crystal standing beside me, her hand grasping a longsword. She is going to fight. ¡°Remember what I told you earlier, it¡¯s still going to be your future. So make it out alive for it to happen.¡± She gave me a hard thump on the back and sprinted outside with a smile on her face. Inhaling a breath, I ran outside too. Leaving my family behind to cower by themselves. 000 I didn¡¯t stand a chance against the wolf. His fangs clamped down into my torso, I was carried off. ¡®I am going to die¡¯ Is this what all humans felt when I ate them? Did they know that death was approaching and they had no chance to get out alive? They did not. Humans always struggled till the end. The insides of my stomach are being eaten by little cubs, at least they will survive longer because of me. ¡°Slayer, you found a child today?¡± A voice rung out from the inside of the cave, the voice sounded disgusting and horrid. The wolf that brought me here howled in response, his eyes showing no savageness. So most likely, he is in a close relationship with that voice. I heard the footsteps of a human come nearing me, approaching me in a steady manner. The cubs were still devouring my insides, as the blood of mine began to empty. Hopefully I don¡¯t see that human¡¯s face, otherwise I will kill him. No beast should create a relationship with humans, they are the ones that hunt us. It¡¯s a rule of the wild that does not need to be said: never think a human to be friendly; kill on sight. ¡°Slayer this one is still alive, I didn¡¯t know you were into that.¡± The sharp fingers of that voice went inside my mouth doing whatever they wanted, and as he probed around inside, he left something. It did not go down my throat, but just stayed inside my mouth. I tried to grasp the hand that went into my mouth, but my whole body was numb and incapable of moving. ¡°You now belong to me child. Slayer, I am claiming this one as mine. There is some meat outside that I personally butchered, you can have it instead.¡± The human spoke once more in that horrid tongue, and the beast did not oppose any of his decisions. Taking the cubs away from my already dead body. Then after a while, I saw something that even I could not comprehend. A monster stood in front of me, arms covered in black scales with sickly crimson wings sprouting out his back. The beak of an eagle where the human nose and mouth should be, his eyes identical to ones of a serpent. The lower body of a goat, but with human feet instead of hooves. Torso coated in a muscular shell that looked to be from a turtle''s, his appearance made my numbed body shiver. Monster. ¡°Don¡¯t worry child, I won¡¯t hurt you. In fact, I will save your life and make it better.¡± He inhaled a sharp breath whilst looking all over my body with his snake eyes, forked tongue slithering out his beak and slapping against his beak¡¯s pointed tip. The beak opened once again: ¡°I will make you into a monster just like me.¡±
