《The Advent of Gods》 Chapter 1 - Prologue( Intro.) Billions of years ago when the Universe came into existence, by law some beings were born with it automatically. It was like yin and yang. Not only this time but from many, many universes before. As one universe ended in a big-crunch, another started with a big-bang, these beings started and ended with them. These being were cosmic entities. Tasked with duties beyond any mortal. These beings were called Moderators. And they had the most important job in the universe. The job of establishing laws. Laws that governs that universe. The laws were not just physical or the spiritual, but defined the interaction, establishment and existence of any and everything. Their was one exception though. The one law that was out of the bounds for even these celestial beings. It was the law of time. Even the Moderators were unable to govern time. It seemed that time was made from the same fabric in the universe that formed these Moderators. At the most they could bend it. But traversing to and fro through time was impossible even for them. But being the Moderators, there were some pre-set rules that even they had to follow. These rules were strict to the bone. They could not be bended. From a normal mortal¡¯s perspective it seemed like a task that was impossible in the least. But for these beings it was a whole another story. The Moderators for every iterations of the universe just followed the rules created by the previous ones, changed them a little to match their idea of the perfect world and leave it be. It was like entering a block of code and trying to find the output. Only the option of debugging was absent. But why were doing this? Trying to create the perfect universe. And through the millions of iterations of the universe why did they change the rules every time? Why didn¡¯t they just let the previous law flow and let their current universe take the route it is supposed to? Well, the reason has something to do with an ancient prophecy that was declared when the first universe came into existence. The first big-bang ever. Before it? There was nothingness. No space, no flow of time, no flow of energy, no rules, no knowledge and no Moderators. Only Darkness. So what was the prophecy? The reason for the continuous creation and continuous destruction of the universe. The reason for the existence of the Moderators. It was fore told ¡°When the time comes that the current world attains perfect harmony, the complete ability to dispel Darkness, then and only then will the destruction of universe stop.¡± Yes.... In order to create the perfect world the universe was in continuous state of creation and destruction. Again... From a mortal being¡¯s perspective this time between the creation and destruction was exponentially large. But for the Moderators it was a chance to prolong their lives and a chance to live on for all eternity. What we could call a true immortal. The constant struggle amongst the Moderators had proved one thing though. Even they feared death. One would ask that, for these Celestial beings that had the life time of a universe. Why would they want to live for all eternities. Well their life was certainly equivalent to that of a universe. But the flow of time for them was very different. To these Moderators, it was not immortality but knowledge that interested them. As any mortal is, even they were curious. What would happen if they created the ¡®Perfect Harmony¡¯? What was the darkness that the prophecy foretold and how would it be dispelled. What would exist if darkness was dispelled? These Moderators though possessed superior intellect didn¡¯t know that the universe when left as it is would not stablize, but would instead follow the path of destruction. This story is about the current universe. The constant alteration of laws from the Moderators. The incident that involved one of the Moderators personally getting involved in the affairs of one of the worlds. The change that happened due to it. The Court of Moderators The regular meeting that took place to decide the laws. It was very important for the moderators. Each and every decision that they took was consulted and approved by every-one. Generally the meetings turned out to be very intense. But it rarely got out of hand. It seems today was one of those days. Two of them were specially at each other. They seemed to have some sort of disagreement. But what could it be? Could the new law change forever how the things worked in the universe? Could they have cracked the code? From the heated discussion it certainly looked so. ¡°Oi! You cheated!!!¡± cried Mephisto. ¡°I definitely saw you cheating, you definitely moved your Rook just when I was talking to Helen.¡± ¡°Calm down idiot. I did not cheat. In the first place why would I cheat when I clearly had you in check¡± replied Argus. ¡°You did too 100%. I was gonna checkmate you with a clever plan that I had devised. And just so you know check doesn¡¯t mean shit in chess, its check-mate which is counted. I could have easily gotten out of it. But you....you saw what my plan was and figured out that you had no way out. So you waited till when I wasn¡¯t paying attention and moved the piece.¡± Mephisto fired back. ¡°Oh yeah? Then tell me of the millions of times that we played chess how many times have you won?¡± ¡°Wha-.... It-...It doesn¡¯t matter how many times I¡¯ve won because today was the day I was gonna defeat you and rub it in your face. Just admit you cheated and admit your defeat.¡± Mephisto said. ¡°Yeah like I¡¯m gonna admit it now. Now that I know what you plan on doing once you win. Just eat shit!!!¡± Argus taunted. ¡°How can I eat shit when shit doesn¡¯t exist in our realm?¡± Mephisto shouted. ¡°I¡¯m gonna prove it. Helen, did you see it? Did you see Gus move the piece. Just speak the truth.¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°I didn¡¯t see anything idiot. Even if I did isn¡¯t it your fault for not paying attention.¡± Helen replied. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. ¡°Ooooiiiii!!! Don¡¯t just call me an idiot. My name is M-E-P-H-I-S-T-O. Mephisto. Why do you all keep teasing me???¡± Mephisto asked angrily. ¡°Sorry idio- I mean Phisto. I didn¡¯t mean to tease you. We all call you idiot out of love, you know.¡± One could almost hear the playfulness in her voice. ¡°You were gonna call me idiot again weren¡¯t you? You just missed one letter. And love my ass, you just make fun of me because you have nothing better to do.¡± screamed Mephisto. ¡°Maybe you do really need to eat shit.¡± Helen whispered. She was controlling her laughter with great difficulty.¡± ¡°I heard that. You weren¡¯t even whispering.¡± Mephisto shouted. ¡°I get it, I get it. But you know, its not like you are not worthy of your nickname. You did some idiotic things in the past.¡± ¡°Well think about it. Do you think I am that much capable of discovering your strategy and subtly moving the piece when you moved your head away for a second? On top of that knowing where to place my rook exactly where it is in that split second?¡± Argus all serious looked straight into Mephisto¡¯s eyes. Mephisto previously full of doubt and contempt started to cool down. After all this teasing was a daily routine. He couldn¡¯t let himself be bothered by such trivial things. Although constantly calling him idiot did hurt his pride. He thought that the less reaction he gave towards their teasing, the less they are gonna tease him. But when the time came for actually sucking it up, he ended up shouting at the others. Making sure that they tease him again. ¡°I guess you¡¯re right. You couldn¡¯t have. After all I am the greatest of the greatest. You can¡¯t possibly hide any thing from me can you?¡± Mephisto calmed down. Looking down on Argus acting like whatever happened just now did not happen and that no matter what the situation he is gonna beat Argus like a pro. ¡°Well then...I¡¯m gonna enjoy it to the last moment. Right now I¡¯m so happy that we bet on who is going to do the ¡®Purge¡¯ based on this match. Cause you know.....Check-mate.¡± Argus exclaimed. Placing the rook beside the king. Right now Mephisto¡¯s king was surrounded by rook from the side and queen from the front by two steps when Argus checked him before. ¡°Wha.....¡± Mephisto was gasping for words. ¡°How did you...?¡± ¡°Sorry but you loose you idiot¡± Argus was laughing now. He got up and started dancing up and about. The chair he was sitting on vanished like clouds. The chess board resetted and from it a voice came out. It was the voice of Atmos. He was the leader of all Moderators. Although the Moderators did not have a hierarchy, but to they just randomly selected a person who could settle disputes like this. ¡°Victory to Argus. As the bet was the one who looses the game has to do the Purge. Mephisto is assigned the duty.¡± Mephisto, knowing that he played right into Argus¡¯s hand was loosing his calm. But as he¡¯d lost. He could do nothing but to obey the commands. He thought, back then when he was acting all high and mighty when he thought Argus was cheating he should have complained to the administrator. It would have been his victory by default. But he was so full of himself that he got totally blindsided. ¡°Well you got what you deserved.¡± Argus said. ¡°What did you say?¡± Mephisto who was already fuming was now getting mocked. Spraying salt over the wounds. ¡°Think about it. You were given one task by Atmos. To govern the fabric of space and you messed up even that. Not only that. The planets we were each given to cultivate, you couldn¡¯t even do that right. You allowed mortals to almost achieve the speed of photons, even established spiritual energy, accidently allowed bending of space and what not. You mess up your planets, you fix them your self. Specially when it is a complex one as yours.¡± Replied Argus. Even though his words were harsh. He was completely correct. And so Mephisto knowing that the coming days were gonna suck as hell prepared for the Purge. The Next Day Mephisto was ready for departure. He didn¡¯t do any thing different. He just woke up and came to the meeting to debrief. "Well I hate to see one of my favorite creations go into turmoil. Such a beautiful planet." ¡°Well what did you think? Clever right? I created the perfect world. These mortals messed it up. It was not my fault though. You think so too right?¡± Mephisto exclaimed. ¡°Okay.....okay(sigh......) . Just be sure to remember that you will loose your Moderator powers while you¡¯re on the planet. That¡¯s the pledge of the Purge. Do you accept?¡± Atmos said. ¡°Do I have another choice??(sigh.....) I accept, might as well bask in the glory of my own creation.¡± Mephisto proudly replied. ¡°Very well. You may depart and remember........ I still believe you can achieve it. The ¡®Perfect Harmony¡¯. I believe in you.¡±Atmos said. ¡°Thanks. Well then...here I go.¡± With that said Mephisto¡¯s body started vibrating. It was like each and every particle of his body started to glow. The vibration¡¯s intensity increased until his body disintegrated into Photons. At the speed of light Mephisto headed towards Earth. The Moderators Court ¡°Do you think he can do it? As a mortal i mean.¡± Renitran asked Atmos. ¡°Of course. He¡¯s not only the strongest but also the most intelligent among us. Remember?¡± ¡°How could I forget.¡± ¡°Yeah... Me too. No matter how much we tease him, its true that we would be in jeopardy if it weren''t for him.¡± Argus admitted. Away from all these conversation. Flying at the speed of light, Mephisto was heading towards Earth. He prefered not to use the teleportation through a worm hole in order to think his plan through, while he travelled. After a while...he smiled. ¡°All right you brats. Here I come....¡± Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the God Planet Earth Away from all the tension between the Moderators. Was calmly and peacefully rotating around its axis. From afar, it truly looked magnificent. Mephisto really had done a great job in creating a world that could reach the heights of knowledge. With different law established on it. It was possible for the mortals to go further beyond. But unfortunately.... It took a turn for the worse. What Mephisto didn¡¯t take into account was the fact that the law survival of the fittest would apply even to the mortals at the top of the chain. As he said, the different races had totally different opinions. And no one was ready to bend their own rules. In the aftermath of the 5th world war. The effects of war caused about 3% of the land to get destroyed and get submerged in the water. This war was the most devastating for the Human race. Over the battles that took place little by little the humans lost the most of the land. After the fifth battle they controlled only 40% of what they used to. It took Mephisto only few hours to reach planet Earth. At a few thousand miles away from the atmosphere, Mephisto stood silent. Watching everything that was happening on the planet. Carefully and expertly mending and carving his plan to the current changes. In order the enter the Human¡¯s stronghold, he had to prove his physical and mental worth. Looking for a minute or two, he had found just how to do it. ¡°I pledge to abide by the rules. I Mephisto accept the Purge.¡± He was sent instantly towards Earth. Entering the atmosphere, he found that the golden aura that was previously constantly emitting had vanished. His divine protection was nullified. Due to this he now was a normal human being. A mortal. Someone who could die from a trivial thing such as a disease. Well falling through the clouds he quickly brushed aside these thoughts from his mind. He did notice one thing. Falling through the atmosphere had burnt his clothes. So basically Mephisto was a human being, falling from the sky; stark naked. [It would be very bad for my reputation if people saw me like this. They already make fun of me back on GramDivide ( The place where the Moderators work and live.) Even the people here will start making fun of me.] He desperately tried to hide himself with his hands. Not knowing how he actually managed to cover up, he actually thought he did a very good job of covering himself. Making the most of whatever you have. In just few seconds he could clearly see where he was gonna land. [Just where I wanted.] He smiled. At full acceleration under the full effect of gravity, with his speed increasing every second by almost 9.8 meters/sec. He landed on the surface. Finally.... But, as he was falling from the sky at probably 1000 of km/hr and crash landed on Earth, the after effect of his landing were quite prominent. From where he landed to a 1 km radius, everything burned up. Like a meteor would create a crater, similarly albeit a smaller one. Mephisto descent was pretty legendary. While thinking that and smiling ear to ear, he moved forward without a second delay. He knew for his plan to work, he had to act quickly. Also the his descent must have created some pretty huge uproar among the races. So it was better to move away. He used some of the big leaves he found in forest to cover himself. Using vines of some fruits to keep the leaves from falling. The beasts that were nearby would definitely come to check around. It would be stupid to engage them this early. Also, Mephisto didn¡¯t really know how much of his power had been taken away. He had lost his divine aura and Moderator powers for sure. But what about his physical and spiritual strenght? If he were to fight the beast race there and then and later found out that his powers were insufficient, then he would be in a lot of trouble. One of the rules of the Purge is:- If you die in your mortal form while doing a purge, then your life ends there and then. It would mean that he would never be able to return to Gram-Divide as a Moderator. It seemed pretty reasonable. If a Moderator is unable to lead a single planet to peace in the mortal realm, then how will he hope to achieve the Perfect Harmony? The jungles in which Mephisto landed were the territory of the beasts. To his knowledge he had landed on the territory of the beasts and humans. So getting out won¡¯t be much of a problem. The beast¡¯s territory was the largest of all. Of all the land they controlled 20% of them. Its not to say the whole beast territory was jungles. The terrain decided the fauna of that area and the beasts of that region had evolved themselves to sustain that area. One of the main features that set the beast race apart from the other races was the rate of evolution. While humans took thousands of years to get used to the climate and the area, beasts only took 100 - 500 years. This allowed them to keep every part of their territory in check. Not only that, due to the aggressiveness of the beasts, they had forcefully seized some of the territories of the other races too. Their own fighting art which they called ¡®Karnic¡¯ arts allowed them to strengthen their body and perform various manipulations. With the plan he had in mind he started moving in the east direction. Within 20 mins. he encountered several beasts. There were four of them. One was a goblin, pointy ears, pointy nose short height. It carried a sword with it. The sword was a normal rapier. Shiny and sturdy. Definitely made out of some alloy. [So even the beasts have advanced this much. Impressive.] The second was a werewolf. With height easily above 2 ms. His body fully covered with fur. Two upper canine thooths protruding out of it¡¯s mouth. The third one was a snake with the upper body of a human. Often called snake-men. His skin was blackish green in color. Tongue hissing just like snakes. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it. The fourth was a Chiron. With body of half horse and half human. He was the most muscular of all. With long hair. It carried an almost 3 m long spear. It was perfect for piercing the body with great speeds. While maintaining a distance from the enemy. But Mephisto didn¡¯t care for what they looked more than what they were doing. It seems they were ganging up on two women from human tribe. Most likely prisoners of war. Or maybe they got caught when the beasts seized more of the human¡¯s territory. The prisoners of war were treated very cruelly. The women were raped and kept as slaves. Their husbands were beheaded right in front of their eyes. Their faces almost unrecognizable after the torture. The beast race had always enjoyed themselves giving these excruciating treatments to their prey. Venting their anger and frustration on the captured women. One of the reason being the fact that the Male/Female ratio was very low. Almost, for every 20 males there was 1 female. So that created some unnecessary friction in-between themselves. Mephisto guessed right. They were about to get raped. After that maybe even get killed. One thing about beasts was, they had superior senses. The werewolf smelled an unknown scent and immediately faced the opposite direction that he was standing in. Seeing him the other beasts also stood on their guard. Fiercely looking and growling towards the direction of Mephisto. It was true. They had found his smell. But even with superior senses it was impossible to tell the exact location of a person. The Place from where Mephisto was watching them had his remnant smell. But Mephisto himself had vanished. The sudden change in behavior of these beasts gave the women a chance to back of as much as they could. The beasts suddenly started moving forward together. Their sixth sense warning them that there was an imminent threat. Within a split second Mephisto launched himself from a high branch of the tree, besides which he was standing earlier. With quick precision, he landed on the back of the Chiron. Before anyone could understand what the hell was happening, Mephisto immediately pulled of the spear from the chiron¡¯s hand and with quick precision threw it towards the werewolf. The spear flew like a bullet and before the werewolf could dodge, pierced his head, taking him along with the momentum and go t impaled to a tree nearby. The chiron who not only let his attention break but also let his friend die started to gallop like a mad horse. Trying to shake of the man who killed of his friend. The snake-man got ready with his rapier. But it was impossible to attack him until he got off the back of the chiron. The Chiron started galloping round and round. But Mephisto tightly hold on on to him. Until suddenly he let go of the chiron and again jumped off him onto the snake-man who was readily waiting to attack the man. But this sudden lance by Mephisto left him unguarded. Mephisto immediately hold on to the blade of the rapier. And quickly thrust it into the jaws of the snake-man, killing it instantly. He took hold of the sword from the hand of the snake-man and looked for chiron. Chiron was already near the tree where his spear was impaled along with the werewolf. He tried to forcefully pull out the spear. But it was to deep inside the tree. Chiron took hold of it with both hands and started pulling. It looked like spear was coming out. Just when it was about to come out of the tree, a sword flew in like a bullet. Just like before and peirced both his hands. The chiron screamed with pain. He started kicking his legs around in vain. But just like the spear, the rapier too was too deep inside the tree. His both hands were stuck unable to move even an inch. The goblins are said to be physically but are mentally smart. Probably guessing that he would end up just like his friends, he had already started running when Mephesto killed the werewolf. He was already 100 meters ahead of them. Leaving the chiron screaming and writhing with agony, Mephisto easily took out the spear which was almost already out of the trunk of the tree. Thanks to the chiron. ¡°Hmm.....(sigh...) probably 112 metres from west of here.¡± Saying this Mephisto threw the spear like a projectile in the shape of an arc. Within two seconds, there was a loud noise. [Yep... Its the goblin. Judging from the loudness in his voice, it probably hit his kneecap or maybe the ankle.] So basically, the goblin was pinned down. He himself didn¡¯t have the strength the pull out the spear and was too far away from the nearest camp for somebody to listen. [He¡¯ll probably die in this case. When they find out that the four of their beasts never reported back, they¡¯re gonna send a bigger army. We need to move and reach the capital before they do.] But the distance was still great compared to what Mephisto along with the two women could travel. Suddenly he had a great idea. ¡°Evening ladies... You are from the human¡¯s tribe right.¡± ¡°Yes.. we got captured when the beasts suddenly seized our areas.¡± said one of the ladies. One could tell that she was trying really hard not to look at Meohisto¡¯s attire. He was her savior. It would be probably disrespectful. The women were all muddy and dirty. Having being dragged around the forest. They had several bruises. It was probably right to disinfect the wounds as soon as possible. ¡°OK. Come with me. I¡¯m heading there too.¡± Mephisto said. He walked up to the chiron who had fainted due to the loss of blood. He helped the ladies on the chiron¡¯s back and then himself got on. With slight power, he pulled out the rapier impaling the chiron¡¯s hands. The chiron suddenly woke up. With sharp pain in his hands and his body feeling numb. Suddenly Mephisto put the rapier along the neck of the chiron and said ¡°If you want to live, take us to the border. Otherwise I¡¯ll cut you down right here like I did your friends.¡± The shear killing intent coming from Mephisto was enough to cause the chiron to sweat. ¡°Ok... Ok ... Just don¡¯t hurt me. I¡¯ll do anything.¡± And so, on the back of a chiron Mephisto rapidly moved towards the border. ¡°Haha.... Now the fun begins.....uh.. after I get some clothes.¡± Chapter 3 - Finally inside the Stronghold {Hey guys. I present to you my third chapter. As I started writing, I¡¯m getting a hang of it. I would love to hear your opinions. I appreciate any constructive criticism. Even if you don¡¯t like something in this world, do comment on it. I¡¯ll try to correct it, or try to explain it to you the reason I have made it so. I¡¯ve just started, so it will take some time for me to build the world. I decided that it would be better to explain different things as the character goes around the world discovering new things. Even though he created it, things have changed a lot since he did. Evolution always takes place. I¡¯ll make sure to properly build characters, though forgive me if I make a mistake. This is my first time after all. Well apart from my other story Syndicate which I started about two days before this one. I myself was tired from all the reincarnated in a new world and virtual reality fictions. But they provide for a good fantasy world. You can literally do any thing with those stories. I tried a different approach with this one. It may sound similar, but its different in a certain way. Anyway... Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I do writing it. For any complaints and corrections please comment below. Thanks} Few hours after the previous events Mephisto along with the two women that he had saved earlier were almost at the border. This really was a good idea. As Mephisto had seen from afar, in the space the place where the four of the beasts had held the two women captive was near the border. But reaching the border from a place which was so close to it still took them a few hours. Had he killed the chiron and chosen to walk, he wouldn¡¯t have reached even half the distance he had covered until now. Specially with the two women, with him. With the amount of injury they had suffered, it wouldn¡¯t be surprising if one of them even fainted. At the border, they got down. The chiron which had been running continuously up till now took a long breath. His wounds were already clotted. It was truly impressive how quickly their bodies healed. The beast race lived up to their name. They really were peerless physically. Although the current events had really shaken the chiron. To his knowledge there was no human capable of overpowering 4 beasts like he did. And yet he didn¡¯t feel that the man was stronger than them at all. If so how did he manage to defeat them this easily? But still evading their senses, ambushing them and easily killing them without so much as a scratch. If the human tribe was housing such warriors, it would certainly cause them trouble in the future. The chiron thought that he should definitely report this to the superiors, that is if he got out alive. Even though the man had promised him freedom in exchange for taking them to the border, there was no guaranty that this human would let him walk out of there alive. If it were the beasts in place of the man, they¡¯d surely kill him. ¡°Well then... (sigh....) since you fulfilled your part of the deal, let me fulfill my part too. Although I feel like I will regret this in the future, but you are free to go.¡± ¡°Wha....I am free to go? Really?.... Thank you very much. I¡¯ll take my leave.¡± With that said the chiron left. Running back at full speed. In case the human has a change of heart, he might still kill me like the werewolf and the goblin. But certainly, the chiron had not forgotten the humiliation and the painful experience of loosing his friends right in front of his eyes. Although he was kinda glad that the goblin had died. He never liked that guy. Even though he was stronger physically, the goblin was still higher ranked than him. Maybe some where in the hierarchy of the beasts they had preferred the one with the brains and not the one with muscles for brains. Still loosing a fight with a human?! That to with four of them against one?!!! He would loose all credibility. But the chiron had that much of a sense to brush aside his pride for this information. ¡°What??!!! You are letting him leave?? You could have easily killed him. Why did you let him go?¡± both the women said in unison. Thats right. From a normal perspective it really was foolish to let him go. Even they knew that once the chiron was free he would at once go and report back to his superiors. ¡°Ahhnn... Its fine. You don¡¯t need to worry. Besides, aren¡¯t we already inside our territory? They can¡¯t harm us here.¡± Mephisto jokingly replied. ¡°Maybe it seems that way to you. The beasts have already seized so much of our land. Once they hear about this, there will be no end to them.¡± ¡°I said its fine didn¡¯t I? You don¡¯t need to worry about this matter. What you need to worry about is the pussy attitude of this tribe. This is why nobody takes us seriously. Mephisto whose earlier replies had a glint of joke or fun in it now seemed very serious. The women at once understood that it was pointless asking more about that topic. ¡°So... Tell me about yourselves. Since I asked, I am Mephisto. I am going to the state¡¯s capital to join the army. I¡¯ve had enough of the bullshit. Its time to rise.¡± Mephisto said proudly. Hearing this, both the women started laughing. And Mephisto unable to understand what was funny as he meant every thing he said. ¡°Looks like you¡¯re new here. Anyway I am Mellisa. I live in the capital. I work at the Medical store near the Champion¡¯ Hall. And this is my assistant Beth. We were both working near the border in the jungles to collect some herbs, when they.....¡± at this point Mellisa chocked when she remembered what was going to happen to them if this man hadn¡¯t come. ¡°Oh.. That reminds me, we haven¡¯t thanked you properly. Please come to our Medical store and let us give you something to display our gratitude.¡± Mellisa spoke. ¡°Oooo.... Free stuff, I¡¯m in. I¡¯ll be sure to drop by.¡± Mephisto exclaimed. ¡°Please do¡± While they were talking they had reached the city main gate. There were two guards standing there. With medium height and build. What was surprising was their weapons and armors were of the average quality at most. This was totally unexpected. The soldiers specially outside of the town must have good amount of protection. Its because they are the ones that are responsible for the safety of the people inside. ¡°Hello Argus, how are you doing?¡± Mellisa asked. ¡°Is that you Mellisa? And Beth? You Two are safe!!! Dear God. I thought we would never see you. Your condition looks so bad. Wait. How did free yourself from those savages? The last I saw you, you and Beth were getting dragged by those beasts during their inquisition.¡± The guard Argus was genuinely happy to see them. [Wait...wait,wait,wait,wait,WAIT. His name is Argus. PFFffftttttt. Very fitting. The job he was best meant to do.] As Mephisto was thinking this grinning ear to ear, Mellisa introduced him to the guards. ¡°So he¡¯s the one who saved you. Eh??¡± Argus said while analyzing Mephisto from head to toe. If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it.¡°Thanks a bunch mate. These girls are very important to us. They have saved countless lives you know. The Duke had even set prize for the person who brings them back safely. You should go meet him. Bet you¡¯ll get some coins of gold easy.¡± ¡°I will. Thank you very much.¡± ¡°Ah.. About that, Argus can you land him one of your uniform? We¡¯ve gotten enough glances as it is. I can only imagine the numbers will increase. We¡¯ll make sure to retur it properly.¡± Mellisa requested. ¡°Sure... Just let me take a look in our inventory.....Ah, here you go. Keep it. You don¡¯t have to return it.¡± Argus said. ¡°Tell you what, you¡¯re going to look for a motel for tonight right? Just enter the one nearest to these girl¡¯s shop and look for the guy named Rust. And tell him ¡® Argus wants you to pay him back in blood.¡¯ Hearin¡¯ that, he¡¯s gonna let you rent a room for free.¡± [Wow..... Only 2 minutes and he¡¯s already better than that cheater up there. Such good people do exist.] ¡°Thank you, but I can¡¯t. I¡¯ve already imposed too much on you.¡± Mephisto humbly answered. ¡°Just accept it. As a gesture of my appreciation.¡± ¡°Well, if you say so. I accept.¡± ¡°We should hurry and rest for today. Tomorrow I¡¯ll go with you to the Duke¡¯s court. To prove that you have indeed saved me.¡± Mellisa interrupted the seemingly unending conversation between Mephisto and Argus. ¡°Right. Let¡¯s go. Old man I¡¯ll come again to meet with you. I promise you a drink with the prize I get.¡± Mephisto said while leaving. ¡°Alright then. Off you go. And don¡¯t call me old. I¡¯m only 45 you know.¡± While going through, Mellisa gave Mephisto a tour of the city. Whatever shops and people came into view that she knew, she told it to Mephisto. And unlike other people who would get bored and start thinking about something else entirely, Mephisto was very attentive. Apparently the town was surrounded by a large wall from all the sides. Those wall had four main gates on each direction. The wall were pretty high. Their thickness varied, but it was sure to withstand any attack from the neighboring beasts kingdom until the people escaped. So why did Melissa say that it was still dangerous inside? After a while, they reached the store. ¡°Would you care to came inside for some tea?¡± Mellisa asked. ¡°No its fine for today. Maybe some other day. We should all rest. You both have been through a lot today.¡± ¡°I see. Thanks for your consideration. I¡¯ll meet with you in your motel in the morning at 9, then we can go and meet the Duke. Is that alright?¡± ¡°Perfect.¡± Mephisto smiled. ¡°See you then.¡± With that Mephisto looked for the motel the Argus had told him about. With little effort, he found it. It was a little rusty looking, but still manageable. Mephisto entered the motel. ¡°2 silvers for a night, 5 for two days with meal.¡± A man said as soon as he saw Mephisto walk in. Mephisto was startled. He saw the man was reading a newspaper. The man didn¡¯t even lift his head up to convey the message. ¡°Sorry I don¡¯t have any money on me right now.¡± ¡°Well then, did you come here to smell the air? Get lost!!¡± The crooked man replied. Mephisto got a little angry. He was trying to be as polite as possible, but still, the man was acting like a grump. ¡°Are you Rust?¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°Who¡¯s asking?¡± the man said finally lifting his head. ¡°Not me.. But Argus is looking for you. He has asked you to pay in blood.¡± Mephisto said in a commanding tone, trying to get back for his previous behavior. The man¡¯s expression changed. ¡°You should have said that from the beginning. You are Argus¡¯s friend right? Here are the keys. Stay as long as you like.¡± Mephisto could feel the man trying to act cool suppressing his anger. [Wow the old man must have some thing on him. Some thing good. Anyways..] ¡°Thanks.¡± Taking the keys Mephisto started going upstairs. ¡°Remember, breakfast is at 8 sharp. Either you eat or you miss.¡± ¡°Got it.¡± Mephisto entered his room. Seeing a bed in front of him, he jumped on it . He had not taken rest in almost a day. On top of that, he had to fight those beasts to. It truly seemed like a never ending day. He¡¯d never thought that this would be so much tiring. He had not anticipated the human body to be so weak. Well maybe he could train it, to get stronger. He really had much to learn and accomplish if he were to help the humans. Putting these thoughts aside. He went to sleep. After all next day was a big day. The day that would decide his fate in this world. Chapter 4 - Judgement The second day Mephisto woke up with his body aching all over. He tried to get up, but the spasms in his back proved it to him that he wasn¡¯t the divine celestial being that he used to be. [Is this how I¡¯m going to feel every time I exercise. If that¡¯s the case then I guess its time for this universe to end..... Its like nothing I have felt before.] Mephisto had given up hope on going to the Duke¡¯s court along with Mellisa when someone knocked on the door. ¡°Who is it?¡± Mephisto asked while twisting and turning on his bed. ¡°It¡¯s me Mellisa, you weren¡¯t down in the restaurant so I came to check up on you. Remember? We promised to meet for breakfast.¡± That¡¯s right. He did promise Mellisa the previous day. And he hadn¡¯t forgotten. He was just... Unable. [Oh...Thank the existence that guides us. This universe can still be saved.] Mephisto was extremely happy to hear from Mellisa. ¡°Come on in.¡± Mephisto replied. Then from the other side Mellisa tried to open the door handle and open the door, but the door wouldn¡¯t budge. ¡°I¡¯m trying to but I think its locked from the inside. Can you check whether the door is unlocked?¡± It was then that Mephisto remembered that he had indeed locked the door from the inside. [Damn it. How am I going to achieve such a feat. At this point it looks like even the great existence cannot achieve this task] Thinking this Mephisto replied ¡°I¡¯ll try, just wait a second¡± He practically fell from the bed, dragged himself across the room and opened the lock from his belt which he took out of his uniform with great pain. Even after that turning the handle was no easy task. He had to use both his hands, as his only one hand could not produce enough power. ¡°What are you doing? How long does it take to open a door? Why are you on the floor?¡± Mellisa oblivious to what was happening inside the room asked Mephisto. ¡°I can¡¯t move my body. I think I overdid my self yesterday. I think I¡¯m gonna die.¡± Mephisto said. ¡°And just yesterday you were on such a high horse. This happens when you exert your body to do something that it isn¡¯t used to. Don¡¯t worry though, once you get in a routine, it will go away. Wait right here, I¡¯m gonna head to the store and grab something for you. You¡¯ll at least be able to walk.¡± Saying this Mellisa went out of the room. And what felt like the longest moment of his life. After some time she came back with a bottle in her hand. ¡°Here drink this, this should help with the pain.¡± ¡°What¡¯s in it?¡± Mephisto didn¡¯t want to sound like he did not trust her, its just that he was curious to know. Luckily Mellisa didn¡¯t take it the wrong way. ¡°It contains extracts of Basil leaves and red gargantula. It will act as a pain killer and help speed up the healing of your damaged muscles. So you better eat a lot of proteins. OK?¡± ¡°Any thing to make this pain go away¡± Half an hour later it appeared that Mephisto¡¯s pain was subsiding. Considering how normal medicines take longer time for their effect, Mephisto was surprised. ¡°That¡¯s because along with body repairing, the red gargantula also acts as a catalyst, speeding up the process of the other extracts added along side it.¡± Its one of the main reason its found in large quantity in the Smog¡¯s region. They almost always add it while making potent poison. Mephisto couldn¡¯t even believe how fast a human would die, from a poison catalyzed by a red gargantula. But thinking about this, Mephisto remembered the time for his audience with Duke was already over. ¡°Its fine, I know the Duke personally. I¡¯ll explain him the reason.¡± One thing that Mephisto noticed when he got up was how beautiful Mellisa was. Until yesterday he had only seen her with mud, dirt and bruise all over. But now that she had cleaned herself, it was transcending. She had a milky white skin, complimented by pair of blue eyes. Mephisto felt that he was recieving too much from Mellisa. But one thing he couldn¡¯t figure out was the reason why she was so willing to accompany him to the Duke¡¯s to get his prize. Coming from a world where money did not exist, he was yet to experience any hardship related to it. But he was about to, in the near future. He was going to learn exactly how important it is to have money on you. The motel and the medicine store was very close to the Duke¡¯s court. So they reached the court in no time. Out side the building, two guards blocked their path. ¡°State your reason for the visit.¡± One of the guards said. Mephisto noticed that these guards had one of the shiniest armor he had seen. Not only that, he had head gear. Belt with slots for keeping equipments. He had a spear in his hands. Mephisto was relieved to find that their equipments were better than the beast¡¯s equipments that he found in the forest. If the humans couldn¡¯t even smith better armors than the beast¡¯s then the humans were done for. Putting that train of thoughts aside. ¡°We are here to collect the prize money for the rescue of the two girls that were captured by the beasts. I bought one of them along as proof.¡± Mephisto explained. Opposite from what anyone would expect from a Moderator live amongst the humans as one, he was quite patient, he knew that his work was a step by step process and it would take some time to get it done. He avoided making enemies wherever possible. ¡°That time has ended. The time for prize reception has a slot in a given day. One cannot just waltz right in. Come tomorrow in time. Then I¡¯ll let you in.¡± The guard was stern. ¡°OK, this is how its gonna go down. You¡¯re gonna let us in right now. And you¡¯re gonna treat us with respect. Because if you upset me... Today will be the last day that you work as a guard here.¡± WOW. What a headstrong lady. ¡°Oh....uh are you Lady Mellisa? I¡¯m sorry I didn¡¯t recognize you, it won¡¯t happen again. You can enter.¡± the guard who was acting all high and mighty like a lion was transformed into a cat in front of her. ¡°It better not.¡± Saying this both of them entered the building. [I¡¯m sorry ¡®Lady¡¯. Just how well known is this woman. But lucky for me its better for me to stick around, munch as much as I can of her. Plus she¡¯s good by nature.] The building from inside looked as luxurious as the building looked from the outside. Pillars supported the roof were made of marbles. The building had long arches which added the support of the roof. The This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author''s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.floor spectacularly shiny. The Duke had also appointed many workers and maids who were at the beck and call of his every needs. The building itself was rectangular in shape. And in the center was a large garden. It was designed in such a way that fresh breeze always blew in. It was in the garden that the Duke looked into the matters. Currently the time slot was for judging for the convicts. As Mephisto and Mellisa entered the court, the Duke got up. ¡°Milli???!!! It¡¯s really you. I didn¡¯t think I would ever see you again. I practically wanted to order a man hunt for you and Beth.¡± The Duke looked very surprised and happy. Though he might be faking it. At his position it get harder to guess what the person truly thinks of you. ¡°Oh... Thank you Nor. I came along with this man Mephisto. He¡¯s here to collect his reward for saving me and Beth.¡± ¡°Oh....Yes, yes. I had heard that a man did save you. But I didn¡¯t expect him to be so tall and handsome.¡± ¡°Well, I can¡¯t disagree with you on that one...¡± Mellisa replied. Mephisto, who wasn¡¯t used to being complimented was feeling embarrassed. He was blushing all over. ¡°So young man, I hear that you want to join the army. I also heard that you had some good ambitions of returning us to our past glory.¡± ¡°Its true.¡±Mephisto straightforwardly replied. ¡°Well then you better get yourself admitted as a captain or above or else you won¡¯t be able to change much.¡± Saying that the Duke handed him a pouch. It contained 10 gold coins. It was a lot. To give an perspective, the medical store that Mellisa owned was worth 5 gold coins. But the Duke was right. Unless he moves up the rank, his goal would be very difficult to achieve. ¡°Tell you what, you help me with this situation I¡¯m having and I¡¯ll put in a good word for you.¡± ¡°What situation?¡± Mellisa asked. ¡°Well some gold was stolen from our vault. We have narrowed it down to four people, who are plausible to do it. But among the four, nobody is willing to admit. Since we don¡¯t have any proof or witness, we can¡¯t just accuse any one. If you help me catch the thief, then I¡¯ll promise you I¡¯ll pay you back good.¡± It sure was a tempting offer. A recommendation form a Duke goes very high within the ranks. After thinking a while, Mephisto replied¡±Sure why not? But you must promise a written recommendation. If you agree then we have a deal.¡± ¡°Then I believe we ave deal.¡± Duke smiled. ¡°Well, then give me some time. I¡¯ll return with something necessary for the investigation. After I return, introduce me to the suspects as a person who¡¯s come from the north.¡± The Duke, unable to understand what Mephisto meant agreed to his condition. After some time, Mephisto returned. He had four sticks with him. The sticks were cleaned by a knife. It had no cover of bark on it. It looked almost exactly like drumsticks. But was more like trapezoidal cylindrical in shape. He came inside the court, and gave each of the four suspects a stick. After that he said¡± This is a magical stick. I¡¯ve given each of you one. As you know I come from the north. The northern continent is the territory of the elves. And as such I know some of them. After all they are the only race that have somewhat decent relationship with us. One of the elves taught me a spell, which I¡¯ve already casted on the sticks. All you have to do is go home and sleep with the stick near you. And the stick belonging to the culprit will automatically grow an inch. This way the culprit will be caught. Meet us right here, all four of you. If any of you leave, then we don¡¯t even have to check the stick do we?¡± Saying that Mephisto ordered those four people to leave. The Duke and Mellisa were both confused. They had no idea what was happening. The Next Day The four suspects gathered at the court. As warned by Mephisto none tried to escape. Few minutes later Mephisto came inside. Today again Mellisa accompanied him. Though maybe it was just because she was curious as to how Mephisto was gonna catch he thief. After everyone was at the garden, Mephisto announced ¡°Now everyone give me back the sticks.¡± The four people handed him their sticks. Mephisto took them in his hands and after one glance looked at Duke and the said ¡°Seize the third from left.¡± Immediately the guards came up front and seized the person that Mephisto referred to. ¡°Admit your mistake. You¡¯ve been caught by the magic. Theres no way for you to defend.¡± The person the guards seized was the treasurer of Duke. He was in charge of keeping tally of the riches in the vault. ¡°I give up, I give up. I did it. It was me, OK¡±the treasurer said gritting his teeth. ¡°Take him¡±Duke ordered. ¡°I¡¯ll decide what to do with you in a while.¡± The treasurer was taken away. ¡°How¡¯d you do it? How do you know magic. How¡¯d you befriend the elves.¡± the Duke asked. Mellisa was also curious as to how Mephisto pulled this off. ¡°Who said I did anything I said before?¡± Mephisto wassmiling now. ¡°Then how¡¯d you...¡± It seemed like Duke suddenly got it. ¡°You led them into believeing that the stick was magical knowing that the one who commited the crime would deliberately cut it by in inch, thinking that it had grown.¡± ¡°Bingo!!!¡± Mephisto said. It was indeed clever. Using the reputation of elves against the suspects. Nobody would have so easily come up with such an elaborate plan in such short notice. ¡°So.... Do I have my recommendation?¡± Mephisto now smiling asked the Duke. Chapter 5 - Journey (Part 1) { Hi guys. First of all I apologize for the delay in this chapter. I was at home for holidays, so I was able to write more. Now I am at college, so I get less time. This chapter has about 3 to 4 parts so I made these parts a little smaller that the previous ones. I will try to upload 2 chapters per week. Also do check out the first chapters, as I have updated some parts. The races have been renamed a bit. Any way, thanks for reading and please do comment and review this if possible. I''ll try to upload the next chapter tomorrow.} The day had passed. Mephisto had received a glowing recommendation. He had thought of questioning the Duke about the poor equipment and weapons of the Guards of the wall but was stopped by Mellisa. ¡°Lets not make his mood bad again¡±. After that, Mephisto took his leave from the court. Mellisa stayed there to talk something with the Duke. It was probably related to the herbs that she was collecting in the forest. She was unable to collect the herbs due to the interference of the beasts. As such without it, it would be impossible to form any medicines. Knowing how dangerous it is to wander around the forest. It would probably be best if she gets the help from the guards in doing the more dangerous tasks. After coming back, not having anything to do, Mephisto slept for a while. He had decided to leave the city the next day in the morning. In the evening Mephisto went up to the city guard Argus and invited him for couple of drinks. Argus readily agreed. It seemed as if he was overworked everyday. ¡°Huuuhhhhh..... So ya¡¯ kept your promise huh???¡± ¡°Yeah. I told you didn¡¯t I? Tonight the tab¡¯s on me. Drink your fill¡± ¡°Well then, since you¡¯re askin me so nicely, I won¡¯t hold back¡± After a while Argus noticed that Mephisto wasn¡¯t drinking with him. In fact he was so caught up with the talk between them that he almost didn¡¯t know that Mephisto hadn¡¯t taken a single peg. ¡°Why are you not drinking??!!! You low on coins??¡± ¡°No...no, it¡¯s not like that, I have plenty coins. Its just that I don¡¯t drink.¡± ¡°What don¡¯t drink?? Really??? In this God forsaken world. If you don¡¯t wash down your emotions like me, then you won¡¯t be able handle what happens before your eyes. You want to become a general right?¡± ¡°God forsaken.....huh. Well I plan to change that. I¡¯ll let the world know that God did not leave this world to its destruction¡± ¡°Look at you, talkin like a man who haven¡¯t seen the current situation of our army. You¡¯ll soon learn why we keep loosing like we do. Why our land keeps getting occupied¡± As soon as Argus uttered these words, one could feel the heaviness in his voice. Mephisto sympathised with him. ¡°But that¡¯s all the more reason for me to go. Remember me when I say, I¡¯ll definitely make you return those words of yours¡± And thus, the night ended full of convictions. The Next Day Mephisto rose up early. By now he was almost used to his body. He had understood the limitations You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.that came with being human and had determined to work to improve on it. ¡°Have you got every thing you need for the journey?¡± Argus asked. ¡°I would have gone out and bought some food for the way but, missy here insisted on giving me some of ¡®er hand made ones.¡± ¡°It¡¯s not much, okay. You should have taken more. And here some medicines, that I¡¯ve prepared. This bag contains all types of medicines and potions. Should you need anything, just check that label.¡± Mellisa blushed as she handed over the bag of goods. ¡°Well this is a first. I haven¡¯t seen anyone up till now that has gained the trust and respect of Milly here¡± ¡°Oh shut up! I just want Mephisto to live. Who knows what type of animals and dangerous plants he will find in the forest.¡± ¡°Wait you mean there are people from the beast tribes even inside our own territory?¡± Mephisto sounded confused. ¡°Don¡¯t misunderstand. The lands possessed by the humans also have some land as forest. But the people from beast tribes and the animals are different. They are both the same species, but the beast tribe has evolved to possess general intelligence. While animals don¡¯t possess any. They attack anyone, even the people from the beast tribes. Although I wished for you to take an alternate route to the capital Moren. But Argus here insists that you can handle the shorter path through the forest¡± Mellisa sounded worried. Even though Mephisto claimed he was from the human¡¯s race yet he didn¡¯t know about the human territory. He pretended that he that he almost knew that and just failed to notice it with a nod. ¡°Don¡¯t worry if he can¡¯t even kill a few animals, how will he even hope to make it big in the capital?¡± ¡°You¡¯re right. I have to be prepared for anything. And don¡¯t worry Mellisa, i will definitely achieve what I came here to do. After that I¡¯ll take you on a world tour. Places you haven¡¯t visited before. You said that you wished to visit the southern part of the continent right. I¡¯ll take you there.¡± Mephisto said. ¡°Really. You¡¯d do that for me¡± ¡°Sure¡± Argus interrupted the conversation. ¡°Careful boy women usually take promises to the heart. So you better keep yours¡± ¡°I will¡± Mellisa blushed again. She looked happy. That¡¯s all that mattered there. ¡°You better hurry then. On the horse it will still take you about 4 days¡± Argus said. ¡°Off I go then¡± With that said Mephisto rode of the back of the horse. It wasn¡¯t long before he disappeared form their sight. ¡°He¡¯ll definitely keep his promise, that man.¡± Argus said to Mellisa. ¡°I¡¯ll wait.¡± Mellisa¡¯s voice trailed. Chapter 6 - Escalation Between his departure and now, Mephisto had covered a considerable amount of distance or so he thought. When he referenced the fact that it took them half a day to reach to the border from a place near it, it made him think twice about his achievements. Still the path that he had taken, though had dangers but was still very direct to the capital. As warned earlier, Mephisto was almost always on the lookout for any kind of dangers. What he did to those beasts earlier while saving the women could very well happen to him. While traveling he kept thinking about all the things that had happened till now. On the realm of the moderators and here. The thoughts of the situation here and the the regions that he hadn¡¯t discovered kept bubbling inside his mind. The humans and the beasts have very tense situation. But that alone should not call for a purge to happen. There was something far worse going on than a simple power struggle. For now, he decided to keep himself on the ground. He had to get stronger. The purge aside, he really wanted to fulfil the wish of Mellisa. It was almost night now. Mephisto decided to camp up in the forest. Although camping in a forest known to house some of the most vicious animals is never good. But he had no choice. He decided to hang a hammock made of leaves of the plants high up the tree. Knowing that he wasn¡¯t safe up the tree but, at least it was better than down under. Before he knew it, he was asleep. He was probably tired from the journey. In this case it can be dangerous because being in a deep sleep can be fatal. The Next Day Mephisto woke up early. He had a good night¡¯s sleep. For some reason the wilderness didn¡¯t bother him. But he was safe and that¡¯s what mattered. He wandered around for a bit in the region nearby. He found some fruits, on the trees that looked tasty enough. He looked into a book that Mellisa had given to him. It contained info. about various plants and their qualities. He quickly found out that the fruit he was about to nonchalantly eat was poisonous enough to kill him before he could take another step. Along the way one thing kept bugging him was unavailability of any public transport to the capital. It appeared very strange to him. Usually the progress of development would have allowed for such facilities at a very earlier stage. He thought to enquire about it once he reached the capital. After looking for a while he found some non-poisonous fruits and filled his stomach and his bag for the journey. At this point he had nothing to do so he decided to set off once again. Surprisingly enough he didn¡¯t face any of the so called beasts of the forest. Just because you enter a forest doesn¡¯t mean that you¡¯ll get attacked. As the time passed on Mephisto moved closer towards Moren. If all went well, he would reach the capital very quickly. Completing the journey in 2 days seemed very achievable. But at the same time, it would mean that the country of the humans doesn¡¯t have much land left to begin with. But his wish seemed to be too much for ask. It seemed that it was night time again. As it was difficult seeing in the dark and was dangerous in night, Mephisto decided to rest at a suitable place he finds on the way. Just when he was thinking of these things. Mephisto saw cave in a distance. That place was a God send for him. There was one strange thing though. Mephisto got a strange feeling from inside the cave. It was not unpleasant, but more like mysterious. He decided to check it out anyway after resting a while. The entrance was big enough to let him in but not so big to let the wild beasts inside. It was the perfect place to spend the night, aside from the strange feeling that he got. Once he properly went inside, he saw that the cave¡¯s mouth was connected to a tunnel that was descending underground. It was really a rare find. The inside of the cave did not seem used. It might have been because the mouth of the cave being too small to notice easily. Also the bigger reason was almost everyone avoided the forest rout. Mephisto kept moving inside the cave. That unpleasant feeling kept getting more and more intense. The path swivelled here and there. Uncertain as to where it may lead, Mephisto kept moving on. He was surprised as to how long these paths were. Just while he was thinking about these things, he stopped near a dead end. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. That¡¯s it!!! I came here all the way for this??!! Mephisto was very frustrated. Angrily he kicked a stone lying on the ground. It flew towards the wall, but to his surprise the stone did not hit the wall. Instead the stone vanished from his sight. More than vanishing, it was more like the rock got sucked into the air. At first Mephisto could not believe it. But then he tried it again with another rock and the same thing happened. Suddenly something popped in his head. His confusion seemed to be gone. As if knowing what he was doing he dived forward. Again instead hitting the wall ahead, he got sucked inside the air. What happened next was something very unexpected¡. What seemed like minutes, Mephisto kept falling down. Still he could not see the ground. Everything surrounding was white. He could feel air hitting his body but was unable to do anything, preparing himself for when he reaches the ground. But this falling continued forever¡.. Seeing no end to this Mephisto instead of falling horizontally started to move his legs. To his surprise he started to walk on thin air. It was then that Mephisto realised that he was not actually falling for hours but actually it was an illusion, a realistic illusion. He remembered that while he was creating the planet, he created something known as a void area. This was a type of a portal to another realm. This was in another plane entirely and its only connection to the planet was through the portal he came through. While creating the void he set it as a variable. Ever changing its location and ever changing its own world. That¡¯s not to say that it would appear anywhere. Instead of random it was more pseudorandom. As Mephisto walked on he could see no end to the path, not that he could see the path itself. One of the great disadvantages of a variable in an equation is that its value could change. Also, just because Mephisto had created the world didn¡¯t mean that he remembered all of it. Now that he was no longer a moderator, not only his body but also his mind was limited. He moved ahead. It seemed that he had no other choice, seeing that he had no way of getting out of the void. One thing that he could not understand was the reason why he got that uneasy feeling. He was weary of not losing focus. Mephisto moved forward at a brisk pace. On an unending path it was very difficult to predict anything¡. Specially what happened in the next few moments. As Mephisto walked on it seemed that he was sucked into the air like before from inside the void. For a second, Mephisto thought that he was safe now that he could finally return to the other side, but it seemed that he did not teleport back to where he was before inside the cave. Instead where he was now looked quite like the interior of a castle. Due to falling on the ground from above, Mephisto felt a little dizzy, but he shook his head and opened his eyes. He could see about fifty or so soldiers surrounding him. All had their swords aimed at his neck. ¡°Spy¡.. assassin¡..be careful, he managed to infiltrate the inner castle up to the Majesty¡¯s room¡± the soldiers were murmuring among themselves when one of the higher ups shouted at them. ¡°Quiet all of you. This is how you behave when a person manages to infiltrate his Majesty¡¯s room. He slipped by under your noses. Somebody better have an explanation, or everybody¡¯s in for the worst days of their lives¡± ¡°Calm down Rick, you saw that didn¡¯t you? The man suddenly appeared in front of us, the soldiers are not at fault. Now let the man up and stop pointing your swords at him.¡± Majesty Klaus said without an ounce of hesitation. ¡°But your majesty¡¡± ¡°Its OK Rick, I know you were guarding me¡± One of the few soldiers helped Mephisto up. He was too confused to listen to anything. ¡°Welcome stranger. My name is Klaus and I am the king of this country and the leader of the humans.¡± ¡°Why don¡¯t you rest for a bit and then try to explain what¡¯s going on¡± Klaus said. ¡°Y.. You are the king???!!!¡± Chapter 7 - Selection (1) Moren¡. A city which could not get more close to the reality than it already is. As an outsider one would think that being the capital it would get separated from the rest of the country. It was probably due to the King. Klaus was a new king elected by the people of the country. His goal was the same that of Mephisto. Bringing the humans to be at par with the rest of the race. That would explain why the soldiers and generals were so respectful of their king. ¡°So¡you decide how you want to die. Death by hanging or guillotine. You can even off yourself by electrocution thanks to our mages.¡± General Rick ¡°Wait...wait, hold on¡. I said it so many times, didn¡¯t I? I¡¯m telling the truth. I even have the proof with me. Check my robe, it has the recommendation of the duke of Viden¡± The king was surprised and ordered one of his men to search the Mephisto¡¯s robes. It had a scroll. One of the soldiers handed it to the king. The king started to read it. With every second passing his eyes opened wider. ¡°That guy who never has a good thing to say about anyone is praising you!!!¡± ¡°Tell me, why do you want to be a soldier when you could become a General easily with your wits. You can command so many soldiers and lead them to victory¡± The king was curious ¡°Well¡I¡.uh¡.¡± It seemed that this thought hadn¡¯t crossed Mephisto¡¯s mind that with the recommendation he could directly become a General. ¡°Well honestly speaking I didn¡¯t know that the recommendation was worth that much. ¡±Mephisto replied. ¡°Now that you know, what do you say¡± ¡°Your Majesty please don¡¯t go around offering him the position without first letting us check him thoroughly. ¡°Rick interjected. ¡°Well Rick since the duke recommended him, I am going to believe in this guy. We shouldn¡¯t be disrespecting the judgement of our own people.¡± Klaus replied calmly. ¡°Well if you say so, but even if you yourself give him the go ahead. It doesn¡¯t mean he is fit to lead an army does it? He might have quick wit and knowledge but war tactics and fighting abilities are what matters in the end. If he can prove himself in those, then it wouldn¡¯t be a problem.¡± Rick was precise and right. Considering that before all this he was one of the creators he hardly had any need to learn war tactics or fighting. ¡°I would like to volunteer for the physical training part but wouldn¡¯t it be best to learn war strategies from watching his Majesty and the Generals?¡± Mephisto spoke firmly. ¡°OK¡ you think you can do it?? Have you ever wielded a weapon before? We¡¯ll need to test your aptitude before you can begin. During your breaks you¡¯ll get to sit with us and listen to our plans. It¡¯s the fastest way to learn.¡± Rick said. ¡°I¡¯ll do my best¡± ¡°OK then¡go sign up at the barracks, they will test your physical and magical capabilities to determine which path you choose.¡± ¡°The...the barracks?¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°You didn¡¯t think one of us Generals would actually train you did you?? That recommendation will only get you so far. But don¡¯t worry, if you¡¯re good you can skip a huge part of your training and move ahead.¡± Rick explained. It had been a long day for Mephisto. Considering what had happened throughout the day, he still considered himself lucky. Walking into a void and coming out directly inside a king¡¯s castle. It was all to surreal for him. But what intrigued him the most was the existence of the void. Although he had created it himself, he had a hard time remembering why he did it. It isn¡¯t like the void had no meaning at all. [Guess this is why they call me an idiot all the time right?] Mephisto registered at the barracks and headed to sleep as soon as possible. The next day was going to be the judgement day for him. Although his journey had just started he could feel his body shaking in excitement for the next day. A lot of these feelings and actions were new to him so obviously it would take time to get used to them. That day ended¡..quite eventful. [Come to think of it, what happened to the horse that got left behind in the forest?] The Next Day Mephisto was woken up early by a loud alarm that sounded a lot like sirens. He got up and got ready for the big day ahead of him. Mechanical watches were not mass produced then so the barracks still used a sundial. There was one at the centre. It was currently 4 in the morning. The barracks was itself placed at the edge of Moren, the biggest city in the country. It was surrounded on all sides by wooden logs which had sharp nose on one side and placed at an angle away from the barracks. Why it was the same way inside the city was still a mystery to Mephisto. A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.¡°Alright. You the new recruit right? My name is Will and no its not short for William. But can only call me as captain. OK??? Now¡.are there any questions??¡± The captain asked in a commanding tone. For a captain he seemed quite young. Only about 23 or so. ¡°Yes captain, why are the walls of the barracks outward even in the inside??¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°Oh! You caught that did you. I can see why his Majesty recommended you. Most of the recruits never notice it.¡± After a brief pause Will continued ¡°It¡¯s because the other races have proven to have the capability of flight you see. In a few other cities they avoided the walls from the outside and directly attacked from the inside. It was devastating. Losing your barracks means you lost. Remember that.¡± ¡°But what if they fly right in the centre??¡± ¡°They can. But then they will be directly between thousands of soldiers. If we are gonna fight, then better do it first so that the rest of the people have a chance at escaping.¡± True it seemed the system was quite revised from the previous failures. ¡°Anything else??¡± Will seemed to be giving Mephisto a lot of time to enquire. Maybe he had taken a liking to how Mephisto thought. ¡°General Rick said that I will be tested for my aptitude and either physical of magical training will be assigned to me based on that.¡± Mephisto enquired. ¡°Ah yes, follow me¡± Will took Mephisto to a separate area inside the barracks. Along the way he could see a lot of soldiers fighting each other. One peculiar thing was they were fighting with real swords instead of a wooden one. Also they were wearing they armours that they were to use in case a war broke out. Maybe it was so that they would feel like even during the practice their life was on the line. And they had to give their utmost all the time. ¡°Here take this¡± Will handed Mephisto a sword. As expected the sword was very heavy. But Mephisto managed to keep a calm face. ¡°Now hit that big stone in front of you with all your might.¡± Will instructed. There certainly was a stone in front of Mephisto. It appeared as a normal stone. If anything was different then it was the texture. It was very smooth, almost shiny. Mephisto gripped his sword tightly and without questioning anything that was said rushed towards the stone. He gained considerable speed and almost before he was a few meters away from the stone, he stopped and swung his sword onto the rock. To his surprise the rock absorbed the sword inside it. With every second passing he could see the sword going inside the rock. Till almost the hilt was left in his hand. Just then the rock started to glow and the colour red was emitted from it. When Mephisto looked at Will. He could see that Will was very surprised. ¡°That¡that was a precise stroke. How did you do it? Did you know that spot was the stones weak point? No you couldn¡¯t have.¡± ¡°I don¡¯t know. I just hit it with all my power. I don¡¯t know anything about this precise stroke that you¡¯re talking about. It might be my luck that I hit it on that spot.¡± ¡°No. It can¡¯t be. Precision strokes aren¡¯t luck. You know how you can achieve a critical hit at an enemy and gain a chance to severely wound them or even kill them. But the thing is because of that enemy¡¯s movement the Precision stroke change from place to place. In the same way this rock changes its weak spot just like an enemy in an actual battle. And yet¡ you managed to hit it right on the spot.¡± Will¡¯s voice was clearly wavering. He knew it in the heart that Mephisto had lot of potential in him. He could not imagine the miracles he would perform when trained fully. ¡°With a talent like yours I would like it if you skipped the magic test and came under our physical discipline. But as much as I want I can¡¯t. The new king and all.¡± ¡°Thanks for the compliment. Oh right. Then where is the next test?¡± Mephisto enquired. ¡°You wait here.. I am going to send the next instructor over here.¡± With that Will hurried out of the area. He seemed pretty excited. He really wanted Will to join the physical discipline. As Mephisto waited he heard a voice from behind him. As he turned, he felt a stick poking in his stomach. ¡°This is how easy it is to kill off an amateur¡± ¡°you¡you are a woman???!!¡±Mephisto exclaimed. ¡°Nothing wrong with that is there?¡± Chapter 8 - Clairvoyance ¡°What kind of line is that. At the least you could have greeted me first didn¡¯t ya??¡± The lady said in an irritated voice. ¡°Can¡¯t women join the military??Huh?!!¡± ¡°N..No I¡¯m sorry about that. Its not that, it just slipped out from my mouth. I¡¯m sorry.¡± Mephisto was sincere. ¡°Well. Since you apologize I¡¯ll let this one go. But be careful, cause you¡¯ll find a lot of women in the magic discipline. ¡°I¡¯ll certainly keep it in my mind.¡± ¡°Now to the task at hand. So you¡¯re the one that the kings recommended. Here catch.¡± Saying that the lady threw at him a ball glowing in bright blue. Mephisto caught it. It was about three times the size of marbles. ¡°My name is Kris. I am the captain of the 3rd squad. I¡¯ll be testing your mana capacity and your magical capabilities.¡± ¡°Now try and channel your mana into that marble. It will tell us what we want to know.¡± Kris said. ¡°How do I channel my mana?¡± ¡°Well channelling mana should come instinctively. It¡¯s like asking me how to breathe or how to think. Just try to focus your spiritual energy.¡± ¡°Huuuuh¡.Ok¡± Mephisto relaxed his body and focused his mind. He remembered the time when he used to change the laws of nature with a flick of his hand. But right now nothing happened. Even when he tried real hard. ¡°Looks like this won¡¯t help. Lets try it another way shall we?¡± Kris said. She stood still for a while and then suddenly released a gust of mana towards Mephisto. It was hard and fast enough to knock him off his feet. It seemed like Mephisto almost lost consciousness. But he got up soon enough. ¡°What was that??¡± Mephisto¡¯s head was spinning. ¡°I just blew you over with a mana charge. That should help you recognize what its like.¡± Kris Replied nonchalantly. ¡°Yeah but why did you have to knock me down. Couldn¡¯t you do it more gently?¡± ¡°Well gentle is something you¡¯re gonna see less and less of from now on sweet heart. Now, try that again.¡± Kris replied. ¡°You are not gonna let me off without that will you.¡± Mephisto was tired already. ¡°What did I just say??? Now again!!!¡± Kris didn¡¯t show any sign of letting loose. It was apparent that Kris was stricter than Will. ¡°OK I¡¯ll give it a try.¡± Mephisto tried again. He focused his mind and tried to channel his mana. Sadly, he failed. Unable to do anything. ¡°Stop. Stop. There¡¯s something wrong. I can feel your body has mana but your mind cannot release it. Something is blocking your thoughts. Is there something on your mind??¡± Kris pried. ¡°I don¡¯t know. I think that I¡¯m trying my best. Maybe can¡¯t do magic at all.¡± Mephisto was reasonable. Maybe he had aptitude for physical warfare but couldn¡¯t do any magic. ¡°You¡¯re wrong. Everybody can do magic.¡± Kris replied. She had her reasons for doubting Mephisto. From her point of view, it was like the basic knowledge of the world was unknown to him. ¡°Everyone???¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°Yeah. Though not everyone might have the aptitude to engage fighting magic but very low level magic can be performed by everyone and that includes all the other races.¡± After asking for a detailed replay Kris explained to Mephisto that in the past not many people were capable of magic. But throughout the time more and more people started adapting to it. It¡¯s not like the soldiers who practice swords can¡¯t do magic. It¡¯s that their abilities in physical fights far outshine their magical abilities. That¡¯s why many soldiers choose the physical discipline instead. But everyone has to test their physical and magical adaptability before starting their training. Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. After a while Kris dismissed Mephisto for the day. After a few failed attempts even Kris got frustrated. It was evident that even the soldiers who ultimately choose swords don¡¯t take this much time for this test. There was something wrong with Mephisto¡¯s case. Mephisto immediately went to his bed and lied down. He became frustrated as well. It was his first time that any task had taken this much time and yet he failed. But Mephisto was not at fault. When he accepted the purge he not only lost his physical prowess but also his mental capacity. He could now only think at the level of humans. He might be a little better at the thinking process but that was it. Also the planet earth was one of the many creations of Mephisto. At his current mental capacity, it would be extremely hard to recall everything perfectly. Yet he was at a huge advantage with retaining even the information that he had. He knew secrets of the topology of the planet that nobody could. That would explain how Mephisto quickly figured out how to get out of void even with its pseudorandom tendencies. What Mephisto was not good at however was perceiving human emotions. He was in no way dense, but could not figure out the hidden intentions of something. It may not have mattered when he was a Moderator on the Gram-Divide, but now even emotions and feelings had a lot of effect on day to day life of everyone. Empires build and fall because of emotions. It was not like he was incapable of perceiving emotions, but it was only imaginable how long it would take before he does it. But that night Mephisto decided to sleep. He figured that a fresh mind was necessary for something like mana manipulation. He had a hard time getting to sleep. He found it very relaxing on his bed, but still could not sleep. After a while though, he fell asleep. What was unusual about that night was that, he dreamt of something strange that night. That night Argus came into his dream. Usually he would taunt Mephisto or maim him, but tonight he came to his dreams for another purpose entirely. ¡°Oi Mephisto it¡¯s me Argus. How are you?¡± Mephisto was very surprised to see his old friend here. ¡°How come you¡¯re appearing in my dream?¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°It¡¯s because I wanted it so. I can do that you know.¡± Argus replied. Mephisto tried to pinch himself but was stopped by Argus. ¡°Stop! If you do that I won¡¯t be able to convey you the message. I¡¯m here to help you get past that trial.¡± ¡°Then all the more reason that I pinch myself.¡± Mephisto replied. ¡°I don¡¯t understand; why would you deny a hint when you are stuck here?¡± Argus confronted. ¡°It¡¯s because of that reason that I can¡¯t let you help me old friend.¡± Chapter 9 - Selection (2) ¡°I don¡¯t understand. What do you mean?¡± Argus asked. ¡°This is what the Purge is all about. We as divine beings are too great to experience and get to know the extremities of a planet. The Purge strips you of your divinity and makes you do it.¡± Mephisto explained. ¡°So? What¡¯s bad about giving a little help?¡± ¡°That would defeat the purpose of the Purge. It means that I have to find a way myself to find True Harmony. It¡¯s not even known what the interference of a higher being will do to the process. That¡¯s why even if I¡¯m on the brink of death, you must not help me.¡± Mephisto sounded very determined. The fact is that even after being the one to have created the planet. He could not predict how the law of evolution would take its course. It was one of the things that Moderators had themselves set as a random variable. It¡¯s also because the law of evolution is meant to be random. Though the difference in topographies and the climatic conditions would have effect on how the beings would evolve but after a while when the living beings adapt to their planet they start to evolve further into more capable beings. Taking into consideration of that fact Mephisto¡¯s words seemed carefully placed. ¡°Well. I never thought I would say this but, I understand. Now that I know that you have thought of this so deeply, I think that you might be able to pull it off. Maybe you will lead us to eternal wisdom.¡± ¡°Thanks friend.¡± Mephisto was happy. ¡°By the way. Do you know why this planet was chosen for the Purge?¡± Mephisto asked. ¡°No. I just as much in the dark as you. Honestly speaking, from above the planet looks fine to me. It doesn¡¯t seem like a world that would need something like a Purge. But you never know. You tell me, you are the creator of this one.¡± ¡°I can¡¯t be sure. I haven¡¯t explored this planet all that much to know too much about it in depth.¡± Mephisto honestly replied. ¡°Well either way you have to continue.¡± Argus said. ¡°Oh and just so you know, I know that you cheated in our match that time.¡± Mephisto said. There was not a single hint of resentment or anger in his voice. ¡°But it¡¯s OK. At least I get to help my own creation thrive and succeed than let any one of you do it.¡± Argus laughed ¡°Maybe that¡¯s why I cheated.¡± ¡°Also you might need to wake up soon. The time flow is different here than on your planet right?¡± Argus warned him before disappearing. Mephisto opened his eyes slowly. He was physically rested but mentally tired. [It¡¯s a bad way to start today.] But he still got up quickly. He didn¡¯t want to hear another lecture from Kris after all. After eating he went to same location as the day before. He was surprised to see Kris waiting there for him. [That¡¯s it. I¡¯m done for.] ¡°Well. You sure take your sweet time.¡± Kris was already annoyed. ¡°I¡¯m really sorry. I promise it won¡¯t happen again.¡± Mephisto took on the defensive from the beginning. ¡°Well alright hurry up and get to it.¡± Kris gave him the same crystal ball that she gave him the day before. Mephisto focused again and tried to force out his mana onto the crystal ball. But the results of the previous day were repeated. Suddenly Kris spoke up ¡°Tell me Mephisto, do you fear something? Something that you can¡¯t achieve. Something that you won¡¯t be able to protect. Do you fear death?¡± Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.¡°What do mean by that? I don¡¯t understand.¡± Mephisto replied. ¡°Because one of the above reason is blocking you power to channel your mana.¡± Kris was very analytical. ¡°It¡¯s one of the main reasons that we lose so many battles. Our soldiers start fearing death and other things when they get a proper glimpse of the other races¡¯ prowess. So many people die because of this and honestly I¡¯m sick and tired of witnessing it. So let me ask you once again; is there something you fear.¡± Mephisto was shocked from this sudden change in the atmosphere. ¡°Well more than me I fear this planet dying.¡± Mephisto said. ¡°What? The planet?¡± Kris heard it right but couldn¡¯t make out its meaning. ¡°Yeah. The planet. I fear that this planet will die. That we will never find peace. Can we really best the other races?¡± Mephisto broke down. After a while Kris replied ¡°That¡¯s not for you to decide is it?¡± Mephisto was surprised by that answer. ¡°All you can do now is walk the walk, not talk the talk. You get it? And regarding this planet, I think it¡¯s one of the finest creation in this entire cosmos. I personally think that it can some survive some riff raff here and there. Don¡¯t you?¡± Hearing this, Mephisto fell into a deep thought. [If the people here can have this positive attitude, then how could I as the creator of that cosmos have such thoughts. Even hasn¡¯t even been one month and I have already started thinking about giving up. Just because I didn¡¯t face any hardships until now doesn¡¯t mean that when I do I¡¯ll just give up.] ¡°Hey great thinker. Are you done or what?¡± Kris slipped back to her sarcastic tone. ¡°Yeah I¡¯m ready now.¡± ¡°Good. I like that voice. You seem to have worked up with whatever was on your mind.¡± Mephisto closed his eyes and focused in his hand. This time however he freed his mind. He could now feel his own mana flowing within his body. Kris who was watching him from a distance started to shiver. She saw that Mephisto was totally enveloped in a golden aura. It certainly was mana. But the strange thing was mana does not have a physical form. The mana emitting from Mephisto was circling around him. Kris immediately raised her hand and shot a projectile from her hand. That projectile was red in colour and exploded in the sky with a loud bang. Within few seconds every soldier came inside that arena. Just like Kris even they were shocked. The mana projection automatically came to a halt. It seemed that Mephisto had drained all his mana. Before the generals could enter the arena, Mephisto had already drained his mana. But enough people had seen the incident to let everyone know. ¡°What happened Kris? You sent the distress signal.¡± One of the generals asked. That¡¯s when he saw Mephisto he said ¡°You. You¡¯re the kid from before aren¡¯t you?¡± ¡°Look in his hand.¡± Kris said. Everyone looked at Mephisto¡¯s hand. The magical crystal was emitting golden aura. It was almost blinding. Everyone was speechless. ¡°What???¡± A confused Mephisto said.
