《Protector of the Realm》


 Prologue: The Day the Human Race Fell

    Long ago, after the creation of the universe, five separate planes were created, each one holding unimaginable power and fantasy. There were beings that could shatter mountains or uproot trees that had lived for thousands of years. They could slaughter countless people without batting an eye.


    The first of the five realms was the Shou Plane. The Shou Plane contained savage beasts that lived in a world where survival was key. This type of lifestyle had made them bloodthirsty and strong to those who would oppose them. Some could be said to be over ten meters tall while others could be as small as an ant and still equally dangerous.


    The second was the Mo Plane. The Mo Plane housed the race of the devils and demons, cunning monsters that engaged in evil arts to increase their strength and would sacrifice people to do it. They were cold and ruthless and their savageness was beaten only by the Shou Plane. There were a large assortment of types of demons in the Mo Plane. The strongest of demons were called the Demon Gods and commanded absolute respect.


    The third was the Gui Plane. It was also similar to that of an underworld. The Gui Plane was home to the ghosts and undead existences. They were the most terrifying of all of the races in appearance alone. Legends had it that they were almost incorporeal beings that lusted for the flesh and soul of other races. They controlled the undead arts and were incredibly hard to kill.


    Fourth was the Tian Plane. The Tian Plane was home to the celestial divinities and heavenly gods who were believed to have a very noble character. They too possessed unimaginable power. However, the arts they trained in were the complete opposite of the other three planes. They practiced ¡°good¡± based skills that were moral and did not lust after blood like those of the other three planes.


    Last was the most peculiar of the races, the Ren Plane. The Ren Plane housed the humans. Humans were completely ordinary. They did not have special physiques or heaven shaking divine abilities. Rather, what they did have was superior intelligence. Humans had better comprehension abilities than all of the other races and thus had the most talent. Humans were also very secretive and rarely liked to show off. Due to their great level of comprehension, they were able to make discoveries that made up for their weaknesses as well as gain the recognition of the other races.


    Not long after their creation, the five planes embroiled themselves into a universal-scale war. The five planes were naturally born with an inbred jealousy towards each other¡¯s talents and wished to compete to see who was the greatest race out of them all. The war was incredibly long and gruesome. Thousands of each race perished against each other and blood showered across the skies. It seemed like the carnage would never end. Furthermore, because each plane¡¯s strength was incredibly high, it was impossible to declare a victor.


    After thousands of years passed and the war was still undecided, the ancestors of the respective five planes became tired. They wanted an end to the war as well as an answer to the question they had been harboring within themselves since their birth. Which one of them was the strongest? Thus, in order to end it, the five planes began to forge alliances with each other. The Gui, Mo and Shou planes allied together and the Tian and Ren planes allied with each other. At the climax of the war, all five of the ancestors of the planes met on the battlefield.


    The scenery at the moment was very similar to that of the current Earth; the moon hanging in the air, overlooking the vast expanse with its blinding light and the chilly breeze that accompanied it. Five robed figures could be seen hovering above the air, each one having a large contrast in appearance to each other.


    The first one was very savage like in appearance with the head of a beast and a humanoid body. Its arms and legs were covered in brown fur and a faint redness could be seen in its eyes. It licked its lips in anticipation at the events about to happen. The second one was much more terrifying than the first in appearance. He had a skeleton like body with thin layers of flesh attached to it. His grotesque face seemed like it was paler than the moon. Every time he breathed, a scent of death would materialize. The ghost like figure had an evil smile on his face at the moment. The third figure was much more normal in comparison to the others but still had very interesting parts about him. He wore a black robe and had thick black hair streaming down his back. He looked to be relatively young and had large horns with accentuating curves that further served to make him look intimidating. His skin was slightly darker than the ghost like figure. On his back was a black blade giving off a dangerous aura and bloodlust.


    The fourth figure looked heavenly in comparison to these fiendish figures. He wore a golden armor that gleamed in the moonlight and a helmet that complemented it. His hair was white in color and a bit short. His smile gave off a dazzling brilliance that seemed to be reminiscent of heaven itself.


    The last figure was...completely normal in appearance. He looked like a harmless middle aged man with his calm smile and tranquil expression. He wore a white robe and had relatively large muscles. The man had a regular white face but his eyes were sharp and gave one the feeling that the man held immeasurable wisdom.


    The three fiend like figures stood on one side while the golden armored figure and the human stood on another. They stared at each other for a good long moment before the human spoke.


    ¡°Three ancestors of the Shou, Gui and Mo planes. Why have you come here to my Ren Plane?¡± The three fiends looked at each other for a bit before smiling evilly at the two opposite them.


    ¡°Isn¡¯t it obvious?¡± The horned demon-like figure was the one who replied. ¡°We wish to end the war by killing you and Chao Sheng! We shall be the ones to rule the universe.¡±


    The human¡¯s calm face turned grim and a cold light appeared in his eyes. Chao Sheng merely looked on with narrowed eyes.


    ¡°This is truly your wish?¡±


    ¡°Don¡¯t kid yourself Wang Luo! We¡¯ve been waiting for this moment for thousands of years! Nothing can stop us!¡± The beast roared at the human. Wang Luo closed his eyes for a moment before resolving himself.


    ¡°Very well. Don¡¯t blame me for making the first move then!¡±


    Wang Luo moved incredibly, fast his hands making signals in an instant. At the same time, Chao Sheng had already summoned a golden longsword, brandishing it in his hands. With quick moves, Chao Sheng neared the three fiends and waved his sword, sending out a burst of golden light. The power contained within the strike was incredibly strong but the three fiends merely narrowed their eyes.


    ¡°This much cannot stop us!¡±


    The demon ancestor waved his own black sword filled with an evil aura at the strike, the two auras clashing with each other. The Gui ancestor raised his hands and two portals of pale whiteness opened up. Inside the portals were two swords covered in blood and flesh. They had vines circling up their hilts and had a dangerous aura. He shouted an incantation and the swords immediately flew at the golden sword light. There was a brief clash of the swords against the golden aura before the latter shattered apart. The demon ancestor looked around for Chao Sheng and was surprised to find out that the man was right behind him. Before he could turn around, a sharp kick was delivered to his back sending him flying five meters. The Mo ancestor cursed while holding back blood and yelled at the Shou ancestor.


    ¡°Kalder! Kill him!¡±


    ¡°You don¡¯t have to tell me!¡±


    Kalder bared his teeth and instantly his body doubled in size. His claws had grown significantly and his chest muscles had expanded. Furthermore, in the center of his forehead, was a wolf like mark that glowed brightly with a deep blue. Kalder¡¯s skin changed to an azure color and spider like pincers rose out of his back. Chao Sheng narrowed his eyes at this change but didn¡¯t falter. Instead, he brought his longsword up and rushed towards Kalder while whispering,


    ¡°The bigger they are, the harder they fall.¡±


    Kalder grinned at the approaching Chao Sheng and his arms crossed together forming an X. Chao Sheng was about a meter away from him when Kalder decided to attack, his claws dancing in a flurry of attacks. Chao Sheng slashed his longsword while keeping up with the speed of Kalder¡¯s attacks. Kalder willed his spider pincers to pierce Chao Sheng while he was preoccupied with his claws. The pincers obeyed and struck around Chao Sheng¡¯s back. The heavenly god turned around and blocked the pincers with his longsword leaving his back completely open for Kalder to attack. The beast laughed maniacally as he lunged forward to pierce him. Chao Sheng kept his right hand on his longsword defending against the pincers. He swung his left hand around him pointing directly at Kalder. Chao Sheng whispered an incantation under his breath and in his palm glowed a bright yellow seal.


    ¡°Shit,¡± Kalder exclaimed before attempting to block with his hands. Out of the seal came a torrent of bright energy in the form of a great serpent rushing straight at Kalder¡¯s body. The beast was hit directly and flew dozens of meters back with his arms burning from the blow. Chao Sheng moved to chase him but he was too late to realize that the Gui ancestor had already set him in his sights. A pale white beam of energy assaulted him, screams immediately filling his head. Chao Sheng gritted his teeth but he could not do much to get it out. At the exact same time that the Gui ancestor¡¯s attack hit Chao Sheng, Wang Luo had already finished preparing. Twelve Flood Dragons made out of a purple aura assaulted the Gui ancestor simultaneously. Wang Luo formed more seals and ten thousand snakes made out of the same purple aura hit the Gui ancestor. The ghost was injured heavily and because of this, the energy beam that had hit Chao Sheng ceased to exist. Both of the extremely powerful people stood next to each other. The three fiend ancestors all had ugly faces on them and were quite shocked at the level of power that the human and god had displayed. Looking on either side of him the Mo ancestor said,

    ¡°With both of them combined, it would be an extremely tough fight to combat them. We will have to use that method to defeat them.¡± Both of the other ancestors nodded their heads. Wang Luo taunted them,


    ¡°Is this all you have? We¡¯re clearly outnumbered but we kicked your ass easily. Second thoughts about warring with us?¡± The Mo ancestor smiled coldly and replied,


    ¡°Well...I must say that the power you two hold is certainly nothing to be underestimated. But I can still say for a fact that you cannot beat us.¡±


    ¡°And why is that, small demon?¡± Chao Sheng smiled and made fun of him. The Mo ancestor didn¡¯t answer and his hands flashed quickly, forming signs. The Shou and Gui ancestors moved in front of him. Together it looked like a triangle shaped formation. Wang Luo and Chao Sheng got a bad feeling seeing the strange formation and their confidence slightly dropped.


    The Shou and Gui ancestors were strangely making the same hand symbols that the Mo ancestor was doing. A savage aura filled the air around them and an evil aura crept up. Wang Luo stared at the formation in deep thought, attempting to identify what exactly it was. Chao Sheng held his longsword up just in case. Suddenly, portals formed around the three fiend ancestors. They continuously formed all around them, black in color. There were swirling black holes within the portals. Wang Luo combed through his memory and he instantly understood what was happening.


    ¡°Shit! Chao Sheng, try to avoid it!¡±


    The grey swirls within the portal glowed brighter and suddenly, beams of energy shot out from them. The beams carried a great power with them that could not be underestimated. Chao Sheng saw the beams coming faster than he expected and knew he had to try to block it else he would suffer heavy damage. His longsword glowed with a brighter holy light as he attempted to deflect several beams aimed at his head. His sword clashed with the beams of light but it looked like he was struggling. Chao Sheng gritted his teeth as the beams began to overpower him. His sword was bending backwards towards himself. Cracks appeared on the surface of the sword and soon, the whole blade shattered. The beams of light crashed into Chao Sheng¡¯s lower chest, almost completely severing it. Blood flew out of the man¡¯s mouth and a grim expression filled his face. Wang Luo wasn¡¯t much better. His entire complexion was pale and blood leaked out from his lips. The beams had injured them severely and they were hardly in a position to fight. Both of them stood next to each other, solemn expression filling their faces. They evidently hadn¡¯t expected the last attack to be so powerful. The three fiend ancestors hovered in the air opposite them and smirked at their misfortune.


    ¡°Hmph, you arrogant fools truly thought that you could beat us!¡± The Gui ancestor laughed at them. ¡°Now you shall die and only we shall reign supreme!¡±


    ¡°Fuckers. You used one of those stupid Supreme Formations to beat us! Don¡¯t you feel shameful?¡± Wang Luo cursed loudly at them. The Mo ancestor laughed and said,


    ¡°What is honor in the face of progress? It doesn¡¯t change the fact that you¡¯ll die today!¡±


    ¡°It doesn¡¯t matter if we¡¯re injured. Me and Chao Sheng still won¡¯t let you do as you please!¡± Wang Luo spoke with confidence in his voice. Chao Sheng however felt slightly uncomfortable. The man looked at his injuries and glanced at Wang Luo with pity.


    ¡°Wang Luo, I am afraid I cannot help you.¡± Wang Luo turned to look at Chao Sheng, who had a talisman grasped in his hands. Instantly, he understood what was going on and rage filled his heart.


    ¡°You...you are abandoning me? Even after all we have been through?¡±


    ¡°I am truly sorry Wang Luo. I have been injured severely and I won¡¯t be able to fight well in this state. We will lose if we continue!¡±


    ¡°That doesn¡¯t matter! DON¡¯T YOU HAVE PRIDE?!¡± Wang Luo was furious. He couldn¡¯t believe that the person he had been friends with would betray him so easily. Chao Sheng looked away and shattered the talisman in his hands. Instantly, his figure became illusory and after a few seconds disappeared. The last words he said before he left were,


    ¡°Wang Luo, I hope that you can forgive me one day wherever you are going after you die.¡±


    Wang Luo coughed out a mouthful of blood and hatred filled his eyes. The three ancestors were surprised at this outcome but they smiled wider when they realized what had happened.


    ¡°Haha. Wang Luo, you have been abandoned by Chao Sheng. You are all by yourself! Once you are dead, we shall move on to the human race!¡± Wang Luo lifted his head and realized that if he didn¡¯t make a stand here, his human race would die. He knew that he had to make a great decision. With a pained and tired expression on his face, he began to speak.


    ¡°Three fiendish ancestors! Let me make a pact with you!¡± The three ancestors raised their eyebrows. The Mo ancestor was curious so he said,


    ¡°What pact?¡±


    ¡°Swear an oath to the universe. Let the Ren Plane go. Let the citizens survive in exchange for my life. I shall seal myself in the Ren Plane¡¯s core forever and abolish the concept of martial arts there. There will never be another martial artist again in the Ren Plane!¡± The Mo ancestor was shocked. He hadn¡¯t thought that Wang Luo would present such a pact. However, he was not so easily fooled and sneered at him.


    ¡°There is no point in such a thing. Your life is in our hands. We could kill you and destroy the Ren Plane directly after.¡±


    ¡°Hmph, incorrect. I have set up a formation such that when I am killed, the Ren Plane will detonate. You people should know of the level of destruction a plane detonation will cause. The explosion will completely kill all of you guys as well as cause collateral damage to the other four realms. They will still live but will be severely damaged with over half the population being slaughtered.¡± Wang Luo held up a red talisman with a certain set of characters on it. The three ancestors¡¯ hearts grew cold when they read the markings and their faces turned white. They instantly knew he wasn¡¯t bluffing.


    ¡°You bastard! I don¡¯t believe that you would sacrifice your entire plane to destroy us!¡± The Shou ancestor Kalder said. Wang Luo glanced at him indifferently and replied,


    ¡°You mistake us. We would rather be destroyed in a small moment of magnificence rather than eaten alive by you people.¡± He spoke all of this with conviction and a willingness to hold the responsibility for his people¡¯s deaths if it came to that.


    ¡°Fine. We will agree. You will seal your soul within the core of the Ren Plane for eternity and abolish martial arts. In exchange, we shall not touch the Ren Plane and will let them survive. As long as there are no martial artists left on the Ren Plane, we will never attack them.¡± The three ancestors began to recite the oath of the universe. The oath was something that could not be broken by any circumstance. If it was broken, the oath breaker would be struck down by the wrath of the universe. A heavenly light descended upon all four of them and further served to prove that the oath was completed. The Mo ancestor looked at Wang Luo and coldly said,


    ¡°We have done it. Now do the things you said you would.¡± Wang Luo sighed to himself and chanted an incantation to himself. Instantly, his body began to wither and his organs decayed. Soon, his whole body had been erased except for his soul, which shone with a ghostly gleam. The soul shot straight down to the Ren Plane, burrowing deep into the core of the realm. With the strength of his soul, Wang Luo found it easy to reach the core. Within his soul, he once again chanted a set of incantations, this time for a different use. Ghostly chains materialized around him and struck deep within Wang Luo, locking him in place. Pain coursed throughout Wang Luo¡¯s body and he smiled wryly. He had never expected that the outcome would end up like this. Never once had he thought that the enemy would have a Supreme Formation or that the Tian ancestor would betray him. He sighed and chanted one last incantation. A wave of energy spread out from the core of the Ren Plane, encompassing every existence on the whole plane. They all found that their memories had somehow been changed but they couldn¡¯t identify exactly what. Confusion spread throughout the continents and martial arts was forgotten in the minds of every single human being.


    The Mo, Shou and Gui ancestors stared at the wave of energy that was altering the memories of every human as well as abolishing their martial arts. They nodded their heads as they verified whether the deed had been done.


    ¡°That human bastard. He actually did it. The Unbreakable Soul Chains aren¡¯t something that can be torn easily. Unless the universe wants him to escape, he will never escape. Let¡¯s go. There isn¡¯t anything left to do here.¡± The Mo ancestor was very surprised at Wang Luo¡¯s determination. The other two ancestors followed him out of the vicinity of the plane. Wang Luo had been chained up by the Unbreakable Soul Chains which sealed his fate of being forever trapped. The old human sighed to himself and said,


    ¡°I¡¯m going to be in here for a long time. Might as well get comfy.¡±


    Though he said this, he held too much humiliation. He had been betrayed by his comrade when he needed him most. The other planes had forced him into this horrible of a state. Wang Luo was full of regret. In his soul, a single thought sprouted constantly.


    I may be trapped in here for eternity. But if there is ever a day when I am free, then I will make all of them pay. I will take revenge for the suffering that the human race was dealt and destroy those bastards without fail!

 Chapter 01: The Two Siblings

    The rustling of snow could be heard all across the dark night as two figures clad in black clothing walked together. They walked casually and one of the figures even had a very content expression on his face. The two figures passed under a bright lamp post and  their features illuminated. The figure with the content expression appeared to be seven or eight years old, barely even four feet. He had sleek black hair that stretched slightly down his forehead. What made the child remarkable was his crystal green eyes that reflected in the moonlight. They were so beautiful and cute that any person would stop and stare for a moment when they passed him.


    Next to him was a tall middle aged man that held the boy''s hand tightly and walked with a calm and tranquil expression, one void of any excitement or emotion. The man had black hair, similar to that of the boy except he had strands of grey tinging the sides of his head. He had grey eyes that looked straight ahead and never faltered for anything. He slightly resembled the boy next to him and it could be easily identified that these two were related by blood. The boy, with his cheery expression suddenly let out a yawn of sleepiness. In an extremely cute manner the boy asked,


    "Uncle, can we go back home now? It''s getting pretty dark and I am tired of walking." The man shrugged his shoulders and nodded his head to the boy, not saying anything. He changed directions and began to walk to his left. The little boy frowned slightly and caught up to his uncle. He pulled on the back of the man''s jacket and in a cute manner asked,


    "Uncle, can we go through the black forest this time? I wanna see it again." The man halted his footsteps and stared down at the boy. He let out a breath and slowly said,


    "It''s dark there. You still want to go?"


    "Un...I want to go. It''s fun there. Darkness is fun. Silence is fun. Uncle is there with me all the time so I won''t be alone!" The boy cheerfully smiled and waved his hands in the air. The man narrowed his eyes and reached into his coat. Out came a pair of earmuffs that were small enough to fit a child. He bent down to the level of the child and slapped the muffs around the boy''s ears.


    "It''s cold. We should move quickly." Then, he changed directions once more and led the child on a thicker snow covered path. All the while the child was humming a glee filled tune that rang through the silent night. A few minutes later, the pair arrived at the entrance to a relatively large forest. The forest was completely black, giving it a very eerie feeling. If someone passed it, they would most likely retreat away in fear as the forest completely had that effect. The child and the man however, felt none of this as they stared at the humongous oak trees with snow covering their roots and white leaves. The man stepped forward without hesitation and the child followed him in, giddy with excitement.


    The two passed by countless black oak trees but payed none of them a single thought. The child had a very happy expression on his face and the dark atmosphere of the forest did not make him falter at all. It was as if he thrived in situations like this. The man, although mostly immune to the atmosphere, still felt discomfort to a small degree and questioned the child,


    "Why do you like this forest so much?" The child slowed his pace a little and scratched his head. Then, with a smile on his face he replied,


    "I like everything about it. The darkness, the silence. Everything is great. I can think in peace. I can play in peace. And there''s also..." The man stopped in his tracks and looked behind him at the boy who had stopped moving. He questioned,


    "And there''s also?"


    "There''s also this feeling I get. Like in the silence, arms are tightly hugging me. This place gives me a very comfortable feeling. I guess I am drawn to it. Uncle what do you think?" The man said nothing in response as he pondered the significance of the child''s words. The child did not pester him as he knew very well that this was his uncle''s usual attitude. The two walked on for another half hour, the scenery not really changing much except for some squirrels scurrying about and spider webs enlarging in the undergrowth. The two people had already walked a long distance and were nearing the end. The man said,


    "Let''s go. The end is just---" His voice was suddenly interrupted by the sound of crying invading the quiet atmosphere. The man''s eyes widened and the boy had a curious glint in his eyes.


    "Uncle. It sounds like a girl is crying. We should go take a look at what is wrong." The man nodded and they both followed the sound of the voice for a few minutes. It gradually grew louder until they had reached a setting where the oak trees became less frequent. They peered through an opening in the trees and saw a large clearing  in which a house was placed in the center. The house was constructed of bricks and looked to be quite old.


    The young boy and the man crossed over and strode towards the house. The sound of the crying girl was now clear as day and it was easy to discern where she was. The door to the house was wide open and it showed signs that someone...or something had come in unauthorized. The man stood in front of the little boy and held his arm out in front of him in a protective stance. Slowly, they advanced forward and pushed the door wide open. The man removed a knife from his belt and held it in front of him, a stern and cautious expression appearing on his face. With a sharp turn, he leaped around the wall and pointed his knife, ready to strike at whatever would be there.


    What met his eyes was the figure of a small little girl, kneeling on the floor, tears streaming down her face. The little boy walked into the scene and stared at the girl with pity. She had a very pretty face despite her age and long black hair. She wore a small pink skirt that was stained in blood and a small ribbon decorated her whole body. Next to her was a pair of bodies. One was male and the second one was female and both appeared to be middle aged. They wore normal clothes and their eyes were wide open. The female body resembled the little girl on the ground. Both figures had bloody holes inside their chests, obviously the result of knife wounds, based on the tears in clothing.


    The little girl had apparently noticed their presence as she looked up at them in curiosity. Then, tears once again streamed down her cheeks. She was younger than the little boy and had a lot of cute charm. In a high pitched voice she squealed,


    "M-mommy! Mommy and Daddy aren''t moving! Why aren''t they moving? What is this red stuff? I''m scared. I''m so scared!" Something shook within the little boy as pity overtook him. He stepped forward and pulled the little girl into his embrace. The girl''s eyes widened as shock overcame her. Then, her tears fell even faster than before, this time one coming from the solace of the boy''s embrace. The tall man walked over and squatted down next to the little girl. In a calm and quiet tone he whispered,


    "Little girl. Do you know what happened here?" The girl flinched when she heard the question but noticed the reassuring smile on the boy''s face, which implied that the man could be trusted. Gathering the courage to speak, the little girl grabbed the hem of her skirt and stifled her cries.


    "Me, Mommy and Daddy were playing outside together today. We were having so much fun. Daddy would chase me around and I would run. Mommy sat on the grass and watched us go. We played until evening. Then, we had to go inside." The girl bit on her lip before continuing. "Mommy made us dinner and we were laughing and eating before we heard a weird sound at the door." She paused her speech and looked down at the floor. The little boy tilted her head towards him and smiled warmly.

    "It''s okay. You can trust us. We will help you out. Just tell us what happened. What went on after you heard the weird sound?" The girl, seemingly reassured, resumed her recount.


    "Daddy''s eyes turned really cold that time. We don''t get any visitors in this part of the forest. He took a knife and went to the door. Me and Mommy followed him and we waited in the living room. But...but as soon as Daddy opened the door, a guy with a knife stabbed him. He...he fell to the ground. So much blood! I didn''t like that Daddy wasn''t moving. I called out to him many times but he wouldn''t listen. Big brother, why wouldn''t he listen to me?!" The girl looked at the boy that was a year older than her for an answer. His hand came to rest on her cheek and he dodged the question, gesturing for her to go on.


    "Daddy fell down and the guy threw him into the living room. He was wearing black clothes everywhere so I couldn''t see him clearly. He saw Mommy there, and charged towards her. I tried to stop him but he threw me into a wall and I felt so dizzy. I saw him strangling Mommy and...she was fighting back. She tried to fight back. Then, he took a knife and stabbed her too! I don''t remember what happened after that." She had finished recounting her tale and looked at the boy and the man for answers. The man sighed and told her,


    "Little girl, your parents have gone to rest in the heavens. They are safe there now and are watching you from above. You are all right."


    "Really mister?" The girl''s eyes turned wide, as if she was having a hard time accepting that her parents were actually happy somewhere and safe. The man nodded and looked over at the boy. After pondering for a short while the boy said,


    "She''s like me. She has lost her parents as well."


    "Indeed. What do you wish to do?"


    The little boy ignored the question and instead stared at the little girl''s pretty face. Tears glistened in the corners of her eyes and she looked worried.


    "Little sister, what is your name?"

    Eyes fluttered open as a young man awakened from a dream. The young man sat up in his bed, panting hard and trying to catch his breath. It appeared as if the dream he had was actually a nightmare from his condition at the moment. He placed his hands on his temple and closed his eyes, trying to sync with reality once more. When he finally took his hands off, the sun''s rays had passed through the windows of the room, illuminating his features.

They had an extremely intelligent feel to them and one could notice if they tried hard enough that this young man had been through a lot. Overall, he was quite handsome, extraordinarily handsome. He looked to be about seventeen years old, his youthful body still developing somewhat.


    The young man was shaken out of his thoughts as he heard and felt the rustle of the bed sheets next to him. He looked over and noticed a head peeking out, staring at him with an interested glint in its eyes.     "Good morning Jia Yue, Xiu Shen. The usual stroll?"


    "Good morning Uncle Xiao. Brother is taking me to the park today." Jia Yue laughed and greeted the man with some conversation. The man was quite familiar to the two and had been living next to them as a neighbor for quite some time. Uncle Xiao would frequently do favors for them and collect groceries from the store when Xiu Shen had to take care of Jia Yue. He was a very amiable man and kind enough to spare time for the two siblings who had suffered misfortune. He was actually one of the only people in the neighborhood who would spare time for them. The man nodded and said,


    "Well, I will let you go have your walk. But if you need anything, please don''t hesitate to call me." Xiu Shen nodded in response and gave a light smile. He was not really one for talking and usually kept to himself. Uncle Xiao jogged past them and continued on the sidewalk. The two siblings continued on their own path towards the park, about fifteen minutes away. They passed many neighbors of theirs on the way and greeted them lightly before moving on. Eventually, they reached a wide open space full of greenery and life.


    The space was easily a couple miles long and there were many playgrounds scattered throughout the area. Children ran across the place, playing games and laughing in delight. There were many courts and fields for those who wished to play sports there. Alongside those courts were a series of food and drink shops that sold a variety of things. Xiu Shen pushed the wheelchair around the various forests and greenery, slowly moving so that Jia Yue could take in the scenery. They went on and on and quite a few hours passed by. Xiu Shen did not get tired at all however and did not make even a hint of a complaint. He was willing to do whatever was necessary for his sister and nothing would stop him.


    "Brother, you must sit down. There''s a bench over there where you and I can rest." Xiu Shen didn''t say anything and merely nodded. Then, he pushed Jia Yue over to wooden bench and sat down. He stared at Jia Yue''s face and watched as the contentment from being around people surfaced on her face countless times. She felt so alive when she was at the park. Although she wouldn''t interact with them, just being around them made life so much brighter for her. Xiu Shen felt as peace merely seeing her incandescent smile everyday.


    After a little bit, Jia Yue''s stomach growled somewhat. She looked away from Xiu Shen embarrassingly, trying to hide the sound that came out. Xiu Shen smiled at her and stood up while at the same time surveying his surroundings. Finally, his gaze came to rest on a small ice scream shop only a few minutes away from their position.


    "Sit tight. I''ll go get something for us to eat."


    Jia Yue nodded and wanted to apologize for making him do so much work but she saw the willing look on Xiu Shen''s face and decided not to. You could hardly stop her brother when it came to these things. Thinking about their lifestyle all these years made warmth rush into her heart. Xiu Shen was truly the most important person in her life.


    A few minutes later, Xiu Shen came back with two ice cream cones, filled with different toppings. He handed one over to Jia Yue and sat next to her on the bench. They enjoyed the treat for a while, savoring the taste and tranquility of the atmosphere.


    "Brother, have a taste."


    Jia Yue held the ice scream to her brother''s face that she had already licked with an innocent looking face. However, Xiu Shen was clearly aware of the mischievous antics that his sister could get up to; but he still didn''t refuse. He raised his head and took a bite of the ice scream.     "Are you sure? You don''t have to if you don''t want to. I can persuade Uncle to not have the trip this time." Jia Yue saw the amount of consideration he showed for her and bit her lips fiercely, putting on a bright smile to hide her sorrow.


    "No...if Uncle wants me to visit Lin Wei, then I will. After all, I owe everything to him as well as you. There will be no problem." Xiu Shen nearly sighed at the amount of bravery that his sister and lover held in her heart.


    "Very well. But if you ever feel uncomfortable at all in any point of time, I''ll take you away. Fine?"


    "Okay brother!"


    Xiu Shen tuned out for a while, thinking about the order that his uncle had given him. Visiting Lin Wei wasn''t something he wished to do however his uncle''s orders were absolute.  Chapter 03: Visiting Lin Wei

    Lin Xiu Shen brought his sister back to the house and helped her into the bed. Jia Yue had been tired out from the day''s sightseeing and needed to sleep.     The next morning, he followed the same procedure he did every day, bathing and clothing her. He carried her body downstairs, where he placed her in a chair next to a table. Cooking was a skill that he was forced to learn in order to take care of Jia Yue and over the passing of time, he gradually became better at it. Today, he just decided to cook simple omelet and some toast. They had to take the subway in order to reach Lin Wei''s house so they couldn''t be late.


    Lin Wei lived in Tianhe District and was quite a wealthy person. Xiu Shen and Jia Yue lived in the Panyu District. Both were districts of Guangzhou so they were somewhat interconnected.

    "I already ate earlier than you," he lied to her. The truth was, Xiu Shen normally skipped breakfast. He didn''t see the need for it and only needed lunch and dinner.     She cut a piece of the omelet and held it up to his mouth. Xiu Shen looked at it in surprise and tried to refuse but the stubborn look in Jia Yue''s eyes stopped him. Sighing to himself, the young man took the fork into his mouth and chewed on a piece of omelet. After swallowing the bites, he waved his hands, indicating "no more", but Jia Yue wouldn''t have it.


    "Another one."

    Xiu Shen came out of the bathroom with a fresh set of clothes on him and walked over to the wheelchair. He glanced at the TV before saying,


    "Let''s go."


    Jia Yue nodded and he pushed her to the door, accidentally leaving the TV on. Their figures disappeared from the house and the sound of the door closing echoed throughout the living room. While the TV was on however, a new message came through.


    "Hold on, some new data came in. There appears to be some amounts of seismic activity occurring around Tianhe District. Fortunately, it doesn''t look to be too much. Just be careful if you''re traveling around there!"


    Xiu Shen and Jia Yue traveled to the nearest train station, where they registered their tickets and waited for the train to come. Many people had happened to glance upon them and when they saw Jia Yue, pity surfaced upon their faces before they went their own path. Jia Yue sighed and laid back in her wheelchair, closing her eyes. She was used to the expressions of pity that everyone would show her but every time would still bring her some pain.


    To be thought of as a pitiful individual that was crippled for life was certainly not a pleasurable thing.


    Xiu Shen didn''t say a word as he continued to wait beside Jia Yue, sneaking glances at her face to check her condition. After waiting for about half an hour, the train came into full view and stopped at the station. As the doors opened up, Xiu Shen pushed the wheelchair inside and found a space to sit. After everyone had boarded, the train began to move. A few hours went by and countless scenery flashed through the windows of the train. Jia Yue watched every single piece of it with longing. She wanted to experience the beauty of nature herself.


    The train came to a stop around noon and when the doors opened up, the scene was completely different. The Tianhe District was quite a lively place and when they exited the station, they were met with a colossal amount of buildings and skyscrapers. It had quite the city life, with people bustling to get to their jobs and on their phones. Xiu She looked around a bit and spotted a cab waiting for someone to come by. He pushed Jia Yue over to the cab and said,


    "Sir, we need to get to Tianyuan sub-district."

The cab began to drive past the traffic as they sat. The cab driver tried to make small talk with the two siblings during the time.


    "So, what brings you to Tianhe District?"


    Xiu Shen glanced at the driver, not replying to the question. The cab driver was about to drop it when Xiu Shen suddenly said,


    "To meet an...acquaintance."


    The cab driver nodded his head and decided to not pry into the two siblings'' private matters. The drive took about forty-five minutes to reach Tianyuan sub-district. The two siblings got off and paid the driver the money. They didn''t spare another look back and headed in the direction of Lin Wei''s house.


    They knew the layout of the city quite well so finding Lin Wei''s house was quite simple. Xiu Shen made his way through the city before arriving at a certain neighborhood. They noticed the wealthy people that lived in the neighborhood, their lavish jewelry and clothing further accentuating their status. The houses were more like mansions, with each one containing multiple pieces of private property. Huge backyards, gardens, pools, you name it. The wealthy residents of this neighborhood had it all.

    "Tch, fine. But only because of your uncle. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn''t even allow you into my house!"


    Xiu Shen didn''t respond and suddenly, the great gates began to open. He pushed Jia Yue forward through the gates and was met with a handsome boy in rich clothing sitting in a chair behind the fountain. The boy looked to be about twenty or so years old and wore expensive clothing and his hair was neatly combed. He emanated the aura of a man of class. Even though his looks could be said to be inferior to Xiu Shen, his lavish clothing made up for it. The man had a smug smile on his face as looked at the two siblings, or more specifically...Jia Yue.


    "Welcome welcome. Please come inside. I have prepared tea for you."


    "Hello cousin Lin Wei," Jia Yue said with a small hesitant smile. "It''s been a while."


    "Indeed indeed. I must know. How are you doing these days Jia Yue? You''re becoming prettier by the minute."


    Jia Yue gave a small smile and replied,


    "I''m doing quite well, thank you. Brother has been taking me to the park all the time and caring for me quite well."


    Lin Wei''s face turned unsightly upon hearing "brother" come out of Jia Yue''s mouth. He looked at Xiu Shen in disgust and said,


    "Ah...yes. He must be taking very good care of you. But you know, there are much better parks around here. I could take you to some of them. They are incredibly grand and just one of them could stretch for a mile or two! You could live here...with me and I could take care of you."


    He said it in a very suave voice filled with sincerity but Xiu Shen and Jia Yue knew better than to trust the deceptive face of Lin Wei. Xiu Shen remained calm despite the advances that Lin Wei was making towards Jia Yue. This had happened before and losing his temper would only make things worse.


    "I''m sorry Brother Lin Wei, but I cannot do so. Maybe someday I''ll come visit you before I die, but for now, I want to remain with my brother." Jia Yue firmly refused Lin Wei''s offer with a smile. The man''s eyes widened before fury flashed through his eyes.


    "Hmph, what''s so good about this kid. He doesn''t have a rich background, all his parents are dead, and he is too unworthy of your beauty, Jia Yue! Living with this kind of person, it will only ruin the mount of life that you have left."


    Xiu Shen''s eyes flashed and he was about to say something when Jia Yue beat him to it. Although she couldn''t move her legs, her arms were certainly long enough to deliver a slap to the face.


    SLAP!


    The white skin on Lin Wei''s unblemished skin turned red from the impact of Jia Yue''s hand. Shock flashed past his face as he clenched his cheek. Jia Yue''s face was creased with anger and her seductive features had turned somewhat ugly with anger on her face.


    "How dare you slap my face?!" Lin Wei yelled at her. "I invite you into my own house and this is how you pay me?!"


    "I could hardly give a crap about your bullshit hospitality. You insulted my brother endlessly and he never retaliated at all in respect to Uncle. But you dare take advantage of that and call the person I love all these shamelessly horrible comments? Xiu Shen is more worthy than you will ever be!"


    Lin Xiu Shen''s face turned to that of warmth and happiness after hearing Jia Yue''s words. He was not one to be jealous or suspect his own lover''s devotion to him but he had been quite disturbed by Lin Wei''s words. Hearing Jia Yue personally say it made him happy.


    "You wench! If it wasn''t for the fact that you are under the protection of your uncle, I would have personally raped you in the bed already!"


    This time it was Lin Xiu Shen''s turn to administer punishment. Fury present in his eyes, his movements were like the wind, appearing in front of Lin Wei easily. The man could not even register how fast Xiu Shen had moved before a punch slugged him through the face. Lin Wei collapsed to the floor, screaming out in pain and cursing with obscene language.


    "Don''t ever call her that again. Actually, let''s hope that you never see my face again, otherwise I will make sure that you get out with a severe beating. Jia Yue is far beyond your range of touch!" Lin Xiu Shen turned to Jia Yue. "Let''s go."


    Jia Yue nodded and pushed her through the gate without giving a second glance to Lin Wei, who was madly cursing at them.


    "You whore! I''ll make sure you never die with a peaceful mind! I hope you two never find happiness!"


    Xiu Shen didn''t pay any attention to the countless obscene remarks thrown his way. In his mind, he was thinking,


    What an annoying spoiled brat. Doesn''t he have anything else to do?


    Since they did not plan on staying over at Lin Wei''s house, the two siblings decided that they would go back to their home on the train. That was where they felt most comfortable.


    As they traveled among the streets of Tianyuan, faint tremors could be felt through the streets. Jia Yue could feel her wheelchair slightly shaking as they moved.


    "Brother, did you feel that?"


    "Feel what?"


    "There was a slight tremor beneath me."


    "Really?" Lin Xiu Shen looked confused. "I didn''t notice. Perhaps it was the wheelchair shaking."


    Jia Yue looked hesitant but then nodded her head as well. Moments after the tremor occurred, another one showed up. This time, in great magnitude. The earth beneath the two siblings shook in a wave like motion. Xiu Shen lost his balance and nearly fell to the floor. This time, he clearly understood that the tremors were real.


    "What the hell was that?!"


    "Brother, the tremors were real!"


    "If that''s so, then that means that there may be an earthqua..."


    Lin Xiu Shen''s words were cut off as a deafening noise erupted from their surroundings. The tremors had multiplied and the earth was moving. The paved roads before them were suddenly splitting apart and the buildings were shaking uncontrollably. Xiu Shen watched with wide eyes as all of this happened.


    Unbeknownst to the siblings, in the high parts of the sky, two illusory figures hovered about in the sky opposite each other, energy rippling from their bodies.
