 Chapter One The end to a new beginning

    Once upon a time in Evlissia.


    There was a Taupe who was just your ordinary girl.


    Until one day when she came home from a plain normal school. She found the door unlocked, which is strange since her mother always has it lock. Taupe would ring the doorbell so her mother could unlock it. Taupe slowly pushed the door opened and called out to her parents.


    The silence was a bit eerie throughout the house. No one came,no one answered back, no one was in sight. Reluctantly she went inside the house.She could sense something is wrong, this wasn¡¯t normal by any means. Her mother would be cooking at this time and father would be watching television. There was also a bone chilling atmosphere in the air that made Taupe more uneasy than she already was as explored her own house. There¡¯re  some broken items like plates and mugs shattered on the floor in the kitchen. The couch was torn up along with the wooden floors and the television was smashed. She went up the stairs to the second floor.


    As she made her way to the top she could see blood smeared on the hallway walls, but what stood out was a pool of blood out of her parents room that lead inside to the room. She knew she shouldn''t go in there, every fiber of her being screamed at her not to go, but her curiosity got the best of her. She slowly pushed open the door to her parent¡¯s room and stood in the doorway to see something that froze her in her place. She saw a dark figure covered in a ever shifting fog shrouding itself holding her two parents in each tentacle. The figure not noticing Taupe opened it''s mid section where a huge mouth appeared and chopped on her parents till they¡¯re gone. Nothing was left of her parents after the horrible monster ate them. Taupe screamed as loud as she could, she couldn¡¯t run even though she wanted to run right out of the house, too frozen from fear. This alerted the dark figured and started to walk towards Taupe extending its claw like hand out in a mocking way as if to  capture her. A bright light burst its way into the house from the ceiling onto the figure a few feet away from Taupe herself.

It turned itself into a dark fog and fled away into the sky disappearing from sight. The bright beam stopped, Taupe was speechless and just stood there not knowing what to do or what just happened. All that came to her was to cry so she cried as hard as she could  and fell to her knees.Taupe wanted her parents back to comfort her,but she knew that wouldn¡¯t be happening. She cried hard for her parents for several moments.She couldn¡¯t even see through her eyes thanks to the tears. A voice rang out to her that she could hear over her loud crying. "It''s ok little one, you are safe for now. Cry as much as you want ,but you should not linger here for much longer. The foul beast¡¯s presence will attract lesser monsters to this area and I won''t be here to save you again. I need to be very blunt here if you want to die, you should stay here,but if you want to live and grief for your parents more or even seek revenge on the beast you head north of here. Look for a entrance along the mountains that will lead underground. I will leave you with a simple sword and shield to protect yourself. Good luck if you decide to go, maybe we¡¯ll meet again¡±. The voice faded away and a sword along with the shield the voice speak of laid in front of Taupe. As sad as she felt she didn''t want to die today so she took the sword and shield along with a backpack of food and first-aid. At this time the sky was as settling down reaching dawn. The streets look emptied along with her neighbor¡¯s houses. Wiping the tears from her eyes she picked up her gear and head north like the voice mention to her.

 Chapter 2 The girl who cried wolf

    As we left off in the last chapter our heroine has just left her home at the age of 15 to head north after witnessing her family being devoured before her very eyes. A bright light saved her and a voice her to head north if she wanted to live. Having little supplies and equipped with a sword and shield our Taupe takes off into adventure or her doom? Taupe left the bounds of the town,never looking back. She kept moving forward in hopes that one day she might get revenge for her parents, but now focuses on surviving. To reach the mountains she has to leave the town, go thru the forest,a small meadow,and then will reach the mountains. The sun has fallen and the only light there is to be seen is from the moon. Our Taupe head into the woods ready with her sword and shield. As she walked already for a few hours she could hear rustling in the bushes. She raised her shield and pointed the sword ready for whatever may come at her. As she walked closer a squirrel jumped out and ran away from her up a tree. Taupe sighs with relief and just lightly chuckles to herself that she is being a bit paranoid. Taupe continues onward picking up her pace a bit but keeping alert to everything even if this does make her paranoid. Hours later she can see the end of the forest and the meadow in the clearing. The moon is drifting off while the sun is barely rising. She cleared the forest and stepped onto the meadow fields, very happy to be out of the forest she smiles to herself and continues on. Until she hears another rustling from the bush that is on the edge of the forest. " I been following you thru my forest and the thing is I''m a bit hungry for some meat. While you don''t look very delicious you''ll be a nice quick meal" a voice said out loud. Taupe slowly turn facing the bush, raise her shield and sword then started to walk backwards slowly. " Hehehe, you think you can escape? I enjoy a good chase but with that shield and sword it will slow you down. Go on and run, I''ll just kill you when you''re exhausted" the voice says. Taupe thought about it. Her weapons are weighing her down but can she really hold her ground to this enemy that stalks her? Taupe stands her ground,dropping her backpack and gets ready for a fight. "Oooh decide to fight? I accept your challenge, my meals always run, but this is different for a change." the voice says slowly lowering in volume. Quick like a bolt of lightning the figure leap out of the bush and slammed into Taupe''s shield knocking her off balance. "Hahaha little girl, did you trip and fall? Hahaha" the figured said laughing. Taupe saw that what she is fighting is a werewolf that stood towering over her with sharps fangs and claws. The Wolf slashed at Taupe, but was deflected by her quick actions with her shield. The Wolf started to circle around Taupe, giving her a chance to stand back up, but kept it''s eyes on her. Taupe got back to her feet and ready herself for the next assault. The Wolf darted across her aiming for her legs with it''s claws, but was blocked by the shield. Taupe quickly took this chance and slash at the Wolf. The sword cut into the skin but didn¡¯t cleave thru hard enough. "Argh" the Wolf backed up" I should stop playing around and just end this, don¡¯t you agree little girl?" The Wolf said and went to starting to circle Taupe again, waiting for the right chance to strike at her defenses. All while Taupe watching the Wolf''s movement to see when to block and strike at her predator. The Wolf charges at her and swipes at her which she blocks, but the Wolf leaps to her side and tries to claw her with its other hand. Taupe swings the sword but the Wolf blocks this time using its claws against the blade itself. The Wolf swings with the other hand that Taupe reblocks with the shield. The Wolf grins and starts to try and chop at her neck. Taupe dodges a little to the left and right in place, but knows she can''t keep this up forever. She pull back her sword which the Wolf kept pressure on and cuts her shoulder with its claws, but Taupe swings with all her might at the Wolf''s chest leaving a gash that is spilling out blood. The Wolf howls out loud and can see a light from the direction of the mountains. "Damn it little girl. I will find you and I will kill you next time" The Wolf said then rushes into the woods and disappears from sight. Taupe greatly exhausted collapses onto the ground gasping heavily. A couple of strangers ran over to Taupe from the mountain''s direction. "Are you o.k little girl? The strangers keeping their distance noticing her sword and shield. "Yes I am surprisingly, I don''t know how, but I manage to get this big Wolf from killing me" The two strangers looked at each other " you said wolf? There hasn''t been a sighting of wolves here in months" Taupe looking puzzled went to show them the trail of blood on the ground, but it was gone. The blood on the sword was gone,what little that sprayed on her shield and on herself was gone completely. "Oh here look at this wound then" Taupe said. The two strangers look at it" this does resemble a wound that could have been made by something with claws. It does look fresh too." They walk off a bit and talk among themselves before returning to Taupe. "That wound needs to be treated right away, we live in the mountains and where picking some berries. We came over here when we heard the howling which was surprising to hear in this area. We can get some help from the local doctor if you want to come with us" said the stranger on the left. "Sure I would like that, but i have a few questions. What are you two? And is this place underground in the mountains?" Taupe asked. "OH I guess you haven''t seen our kind before? That is a bit strange, but we''re  very common in this area. We¡¯re what you humans call halflings or hobbits  for short. Also yes the doctor and our place is underground in fact. My name is Bubbles and my friend here is Buttercup, your name is? Bubbles asked. "Taupe, my name is Taupe" "Nice to meet you Taupe, but now let us be on our way" Bubbles said. The three of them crossed thru the meadow fields and reached the mountain. After traveling a few ways the three reach a secret entrance that led underground to the town of Hidden Cove. Taupe saw the doctor that quickly cleaned and treated the wound telling her to be more careful,but didn¡¯t ask how she got the wound. The treatment was free, but was told to help with the festival celebrating a newcomer to their fair town, so she did happily.

 Chapter 3 new town, new problems?

    Taupe relax while people celebrated even though she just survive a horrible encounter with a werewolf. Everyone that live at the town was drinking and partying while taking the time to meet Taupe and greet her.


    Taupe wasn''t much for talking, just wanted to rest, but was obligated to meet people and do small talk with the residents. After she was done she sat by herself looking at the ground still reflecting on her life events so far. Until a non-hobbit came up to her and started talking " I see you manage to make it here as I suggested to you. Honestly this is great. I heard from the doctor you were attacked. I guess those weapons I gave you came in handy." Taupe looked at the person wearing a hooded cape that covered her face and most of the stranger''s body. "Are you the person who saved me at my house?" Taupe asked. "Yes, I had some business to take care of so I apologize for having to leave you alone. Ah I haven''t told you my name yet, my name is Evy ,but people call me Evy the Savior. I manage to save a town or two from drought. Vanquish a small crowd of monsters,but I¡¯m more concern about you"Evy said. "Now that i made it to Hidden Cove. What else am I suppose to do Evy?" Taupe asked. "Well I would like to take you in and help train you, be a teacher for you, but also provide a safe place to stay. First I need you to rest at the doctors for a day and then come to know these people and help them out for a while. I will be gone for a while so it¡¯s best to make friends in the meantime. I will check up on you after I complete something on my list that needs to be done. I just wanted to check up on you before I go, assuming that you agree to my terms of me being your new teacher." Evy explained. "Wow, uhh this is a lot to take in at this moment" Taupe replied. "Yes, I can imagine for someone in your situation,but I must know your answer before I take off. If no, then you are free to do whatever you want to do. You can stay here for the rest of your life or travel on your own. If yes, then I will take you under my wing when I return" Evy stated. "I guess my answer is yes then" Taupe answered. "Good! Enjoy your party and rest up, a few of the hobbits will keep a eye on you for me so don''t let me down on helping the people of Hidden Cove"Evy mentions before taking off. Taking Evy''s advice Taupe went on to enjoy her party and went to the doctor''s office medical room to rest up and recover. A new day has begun, while Taupe was sleeping the doctor barges into his own medical room. "Wake up Taupe! Time to get to work. Evy gave me instructions to wake you up early so you can get to work on helping out. Come back here at the end of the day o.k" the Doctor said. Taupe goes out and asks the town folks if they need any help with tasks around the town. Some tasks were easy or a bit time consuming while others were gross and outright deny helping that person. She went to see the doctor at the end of the day "Good work Taupe, Evy said you could stay here in the shack right over there. It has some food and water for you and a nice decent bed. Try and take it easy on your stay here. Be sure to eat three meals a day. Continue working until Evy comes back to pick you up whenever she is done with whatever she is suppose to do." said the Doctor. Taupe went to the shack and ate supper which was some soup mixed with meat and vegetables.The Doctor moved Taupe''s stuff already inside for her so she didn¡¯t have to worry about it. After Taupe finished eating and wash up she went to her bed  to rest exhausted by today''s work. Morning came and Taupe fixed herself some breakfast and went on to continue helping around the town. She help the elderly and play around with the kids. Everyone in the town knew her by name. This went on for about a month until Evy finally came back. When Taupe''s day was finished she returned to her shack to see Evy is inside waiting for her. " I hear you been busy and the people trust you as if you where they¡¯re own. I finished my task and am ready to take you on as my first student. You prove you can do the work,but now let''s see if you can take my training"Evy said "Can I rest first and then go in the morning" Taupe asked. "Hhmm I guess it would be fair. You did work today after all, but we leave early in the morning. You can eat once we get to my cottage" Evy replies. Taupe and Evy went on to eat supper and then off to sleep. Evy woke Taupe up way early than she is used to and told her to prepare for the journey that it is quite a distance. Taupe did as she was told, a bit sad she wouldn¡¯t get to say goodbye to her friends she made, but this is probably for the best. Evy and Taupe head deeper into the underground cavern,following Evy she takes a passageway that leads up up to the surface on the other side of the mountains only after walking for several hours. Once above ground they were meet with cold harsh winds.

"I always use this spell when making my way thru here" exclaimed Evy. Taupe got closer to Evy to stay warm as they continued walking. They left the mountains behind and reached a swamp area and eventually made it to the center where the ground was stable and the water was clean and seeing a big cottage that stands a big out with its weird design. "This is my house it''s not much, but better than nothing. I will sleep in my room while you can have the guest room. I''ll cook breakfast for us, but want you to watch me so you can learn how to cook for yourself one day. Afterwards you can spend the day sightseeing. Starting tomorrow we will begin your training so enjoy today while you can." Evy grins at Taupe showing only her smile and still hiding her whole face under the hood. Taupe gets situated to her new home and watches Evy as she cooks and happy to eventually eat. Afterwards Taupe takes her shield and sword and start to explore the nearby surroundings keeping the cottage in sight.

 Chapter 4 A new stranger appears

    Taupe started her training with Evy. The first week was rough for the both of them. Evy wasn''t great at explaining her techniques and Taupe wasn''t the best student either. Taupe started to question Evy on everything. Evy was getting annoyed that Taupe wasn¡¯t getting the lessons down on the first try, giving her a hard time every chance. After weeks of training they start to form a bond of teacher and student. Evy went on to explain things more clearly to Taupe and go into depths of all the elements in the world. She open up a bit about herself talking a little about her past, and allowing Taupe to see her face that is always covered by her hood. While Taupe tidy up the house, plant a garden of edible fruits and vegetables, and practicing what she learned when Evy wasn''t watching her. Weeks turned into months and months turned into years. Taupe is now 20 and Evy was going to head off into town to pick up some ingredients to bake Taupe her favorite type of cake, strawberry cheese cake. While she is gone Taupe is in charge of watching over the cottage. Evy left wearing her signature hooded cloak that was as dark as the night and Taupe wearing a plain normal dress with a belt was sitting outside. A few hours passed by and Taupe knew it was still going to be a while before came back. So she decide to cast some spells and practice her staff attacks. As Taupe practiced her spells she saw someone in a long black coat and a wide hat. By the look of the face, it was a male that stood taller than Taupe by a few more feet. Taupe is roughly five feet seven inches, the stranger had to be near five feet and eleven inches. "HEY YOU FREEZE!" Taupe shouted. "How did you manage to get here?" Taupe asked reaching for her staff. The stranger replied" Easy I was just passing thru. I think that''s not really the answer you wanted.  A mirage spell cast in this swamp and I seemingly was getting turned around. I then used a spell that break the illusion for me and decided to check what is in the center. I''m sorry if I startled you".  "The fact that you say you cast a simple spell to get here is a lie. My teacher casted this spell to ward off intruders. No average mage could enter this area" Taupe stated. "Heh, quite right you are there. I am looking for someone actually. I''ll ask my question and then be on my way. Have you seen or heard about a strong witch named Evy? The Stranger asked. Taupe got out of her chair and is now standing facing the stranger. " I didn''t quite catch your name before, what was it again?" Taupe asked "I see that you might actually know something. Alright my name is Fallen Savior. Now can you answer my question? Fallen Savior asked. "I don''t think I should, It would be best if you leave now for your own safety" Taupe commanded. "I don''t mean to upset you, I am just asking a simple question so I can find Evy and make her pay for the crimes she has committed" Fallen Savior said. "What crimes are you talking about?" Taupe ask clearly curious to what Fallen Savior has to say now. "Well there are multiple accounts of homicide of other magic users, attempted homicide, practice of forbidden magic, sacrificing citizens, slaughtering of towns, even killing a council member of Overseers that keep the peace between all the races" Fallen Savior said. "That can''t be true, you must be lying. You need to leave now or else!" Taupe said angrily. "The rumors were true then she is hiding here and took a new apprentice on. Normally she isn''t one to teach so you must be special to her. I think it''s best if you don''t pick a fight with me young lady. I was one of those attempted homicides, I will bring Evy in and she will pay for her crimes" Fallen Savior stated. Taupe let her feelings get the better of her and shoot out a ball of fire at Fallen Savior. Without even flinching he does a circle motion with his hands and block the fireball reducing it to nothing. "I can have you on trial for attacking a member of the Magic Council. It''s best if you stop this foolishness now" Fallen Savior warned Taupe. Taupe wasn''t about to give up yet, she cast another fireball then conjure up a strong wind to blow against her opponent. Lastly she follows up with a chuck of rock from the ground beneath her and flings it at him. Fallen Savior cast a barrier around himself and stood his ground. The fireball hits and burst into flames but only sets the ground around him on fire. The wind fuels the flames but still Fallen Savior stands still unhurt from the attacks. The rock smashes forcing him to step back a step but is still standing. "Nice I see you learn some basics, but there is more to learn. This fire is a problem you shouldn''t use it whenever you like. No doubt Evy is your teacher. Self control when using magic is one of the fundamentals to magic and you are lacking it." Fallen Savior scold Taupe. Fallen Savior does a sweeping motion with his hands again creating water and putting out the fire. He starts to walk closer to Taupe and every spell she tries, Fallen Savior cancels it out until in close range where Taupe uses her staff.

    Taupe tries as hard as she can to hit him but he blocks every hit, even pushes against the staff knocking her off balance and falls to the ground. Finally when Taupe is knock to the ground, she drops her staff by accident. Fallen Savior forms a circle with his two hands and start to slowly make the circle smaller. Taupe can feel she is being restricted against her will making it impossible to move. "I don''t want this to continue, you will only be hurting yourself. I could reflect your spells back at you thus you would be killing yourself. This isn''t a game Taupe. I have been watching thru the mirage for a while now. I been waiting for Evy to leave to say this to you. Get away from her. Evy never took a student before and what''s worse is she killed her own teacher. This was mainly a scouting missions today, but I wanted to take the risk to warn you. I can sense she booby trap that cottage for a stranger like me and honestly I don''t know if I can take Evy on by myself. One day she will be weaken and then I and my group will capture her, but today isn''t that day. She has ways of disappearing from us who hunt other mages or witches that kill. Just heed my words Taupe and don''t mention my name to Evy. If you do leave here, head east till you come up against a big hollow tree then head northeast to the town of Tera. You can get directions from there on how to get to the Grand Academy for magic users so we may meet again" Fallen Savior said breaking the grip on the restriction spell and walking east till he was out of sight. Taupe stood up and thought about all he had to say. What reason does this stranger have to lie  to her about Evy? What has Evy really done before she met Taupe? Questions she doesn''t have the answers to, but should she listen and leave now or stay there and wait for Evy to return. Taupe continues to ponder this as she sits back down on the chair. she was on outside while the wind gently blows thru the air.
