《Offline》 Chapter 1: Offline Offline As I gazed at the words written in crimson red. I pondered. For what reasons have I deserved this? Never before have I sat at front of her four monitors. Why would I? I knew the term internet, games, players and online. She taught me. But never before have I touched a mouse ever. The warmth left behind lingered. Felt heavy like the long breaths of mine. Stiffened like my tensed fingers. A burden I moved left and right. ¡°A good gaming mouse always gets you far!¡± She said, have always said. Next generation was it? She replaced it, the next generation every year¡ Whenever we spoke about her games, I had no idea what language she spoke in. But even with a maneuver within less than an inch on the gaming pad, the cursor had already gone from right towards the left monitor. Just like the time spent with her. With effort, eventually I had the cursor at where I wanted it to be, hovering over the peculiar words, ¡°Offline¡±, and ¡°Begin¡±. I was proud, it took a while. But why, I question myself? Was it not suppose to be like all the other days? Me whom knocked the door. Opened it with a loud crackling squeak that raised the goosebumps. Not that she would ever mind. The light squeezed itself into the room, while the fragrance engulfed my nostrils, and there I would find her. Sitting there, at the corner beside her curtain tagged with her virtual name ¡°Eswhar¡±. She sat on the same seat where I currently am. A dark cozy room with musical chimes of her computer. With her crimson red hair towards me, it always started with a click with her tongue. Her complains that is. Not about life, not about boyfriends, but about games. Funny, yet how it saddens me¡ I don¡¯t recall much about the other days, yet this one burned into my mind. She raised her virtual gear. Probably because there ain¡¯t any use for it for the next game. But is it not heavy? My thoughts never reached her, for she rested it above her hair, and leaned onto her palm with her elbow on the custom ordered birch desktop. ¡°Che, one game after another¡ Repetitive! Boring! Where is the innovation?!¡± She grabbed her joysticks. Her torch burned with a new goal unknown to me. All while the butterflies tickled my inner giggle. I might not be familiar with computers, or in this case, games. But I knew how cute her personality could be. She might be complaining, but with another careful look. They wouldn¡¯t be surprised that she might have tried every game out there. Now what was it? A bright smile? No¡ Her iris, green like the emerald leaves bathing within the sun. If only she ever tried the game called life, the world outside the door. Raiding, or was it PvP? Either way, she called her goal the reason for not going outside. Something like that. She whom stayed up late, concentrated, never winking with her sharp yet wide open eyes. How she have yet to obtain the dark circles or eye bags, I wonder how. If only she knew that anyone would ask her hand out at a single glance, maybe the outside world could poke her interest? But¡ Even with her rosy cheeks paled from the four monitors, or rather, already porcelain from not going outside at all. There is always something hidden beneath it all. I shivered, the smell¡ I know it from experience. Traumatized perhaps. Did she hide it once again under the bed? Like the usual routine, I checked every corners of the room. Tidied as much as I could, paved my way towards the source. Grabbed the wasted clothes, sorted her old accessories, handhelds, gaming headsets, controllers, and all of the same category. Until eventually. My eyes burned! Now calm down, I told myself. For what I saw could not really be what I believe it was¡ Right? I sighed, for I had to do, what I had to do. But do I dare? Dare to reveal what would burn my eyes? I gulped down the voice before it escaped my throat, steeled my fingers and mind for war. And as the sweat rolled from my itchy back, I saw it¡ And I dare not scream. The pizza, the cheese glued between every fibre of the clothings. The pores of those ugly nasty mold, leaking from under a stack of clothes! If one questioned the meaning of life, I questioned the reason for the stack of clothes when she have yet to set a foot outside of her house¡ I should start cleaning her room daily¡ Wait¡ Maybe she is showing her rebellious age of me who bought clothes for her? Nah¡ It can¡¯t be? Is my taste that bad? I glanced at her, and before I knew it. I focused at the white tank tops. Proudly presenting her petite sculpted beauty, while she sat with her short blue jeans before her rainbow colored keyboard, two joysticks and a customized mouse from some secret benefactor. It pierced my heart to say this, but she is cute¡ My sister that is¡ Now, before you call me anything weird! Mind you... While currently she did not use the virtual gear, she still had it combined with her headset on her. For me, it looked just like the main character from a sci-fi movie. Ready with the joysticks to pewpewpew at the baddies. ¡°Fite me!¡± She once said against all robots. Or did she mean fight me? Something from the internet I suppose. Suffice to say, she is cute. But it is all nothing more than admiration¡ What shattered that idea though, was that none of her gaming equipment even had a stain! No dust, no anything. Not even the fingerprint of everyday oily sweat! Why¡ Why you do this to me? That case though, full tower was it? Made out of steel with illuminating red crimson lights. Nicely colored but somewhat evil... Though I cannot fathom the care she has for it. All the stickers¡ Evga, Nvidia and Asus, you name it¡ If only she took care of her room as much as her¡ I scratched my head, sli¡ sli¡ 1380 Titan? Ti? Close enough, she had four of them at least. The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. I turned my gaze towards her, and before I knew it, she ¡°Htmh!¡±ed at me and returned to her little world. Did I stare at your beloved that much? I sulked. But the smell that tingled and caused my nose to be runny, finally forced my hands¡ I made my way to the closest, renowned as my arsenal of destruction. Grabbed my heroic weapons, my rubber gloves, my mop and bucket. I crashed into the room. But neither did she care. Fingers forged by sweat. Body strengthened by sweeping, and mind unbreakable from the torture of particles of dust. I was fast, swift, effective at what I did. And when I was finally satisfied, I inhaled the soothing smell of limes, as I swiped the greasy sweat off of my forehead. Am I not great? ¡ ... Met with silence, I left the room and glanced at the clock before the Tv. But then¡ It hit me¡ My eyes focused upon the time once again, and then outside the window. It was late! If I don¡¯t hurry, I won¡¯t make it to the grocery store! I drained the soot and threw my beloved cleaning equipment into the storage, ran towards the door, shoved my two feets into my summer shoes. Went back into the storage to properly place my weapons against the wall. Went back to the front door. Opened the door and let the wind chill me from the heat of work. ¡°I¡¯m heading out for groceries!¡± I shouted, lungs gasping for air. ¡ No answer. Not that I expected any. With that, I closed the door, locked it may I add. Checked three times. I had to be sure that my sister wouldn¡¯t mistake someone else as me. I sighed¡ Truthfully, I am a disgrace. For all I had thought of my sister, I¡¯m actually the one without work. If she was lazy, I am worse than lazy. You could say that the reason I might be still in this house of hers, is because I am her somewhat unofficial house maid. Not that I¡¯m complaining though. But where in my life did I choose the wrong road? University? School? The part times? Or my motivation¡ For all I remember, my sister never left her new house ever since that day... A genius? No, she left school for competitive gaming. I found it fun watching her win as an anonymous player who gambled with high stakes, but never did I really see the reason for playing games. Well, I blame my parents for parts of that. No matter. Today I will celebrate with the finest dining. A hard work needs to be supplemented with the goodies! Potato? Rice? Maybe juicy meat marinated with my super spices and butter! Before long, my thoughts had already wandered me back home. But I wished until this very second, that I had never left home at all. The bag of groceries slammed against the floor. It all went blank. Gone¡ Gone! I checked the bathroom, knocked first may I add. Checked the kitchen, the storage, bashed open my room, checked under every chair and behind every curtains. I ran back to her room, ran back to the door. Held my head as I recalled that I had unlocked it with my key. I was somewhat happy until it¡ It was still there¡ The key within the box beside the front door, and the pair of shoes¡ Untouched. I don¡¯t know how. But I froze, lost my balance, horror overshadowed my mind. What if¡ I didn¡¯t want to think of it, yet I knew I had to call them. And I did. And they arrived¡ The cause? At first, the police sent parties outside to locate her with the help of german shepherds. They wandered around the neighbour, but eventually found themselves back at the front door¡ No¡ It barked¡ They barked¡ They barked at me. They thought I did it, no¡ They thought I was spouting lies. Who wouldn¡¯t? The room was spot clean! Even her chair had no ass prints of someone ever sitting there! But they could not see what I could¡ Markings, unidentified markings etched across her room.. I tried to explain, but they thought I was crazy? Mental? Those eyes looked dead silent at me, tried to wring the truth out of my very soul. Suffice to say, my tears welled up and I cried. Since then? A long week passed. Felt like years before the discharge. Deafening as if someone strangled my throat. I could still hear the siren, the echoes, the table that crackled from each slam. My headache from being thrown against the wall. The smelly cigar, the rough voice which threatened me as I was held by my collar. Falsified proof that entered my ear and exited the other... All because no one believed me¡ But the damage was already done. The old lady, the ma¡¯am, the butcher. The people whom told their child to look away, stay away. None of them even glanced at me anymore. People, humanity¡ Is this how those innocent felt when accused of murder? Before I knew. I sat before my sister¡¯s desktop. Comfortable from the cushion of the seat as I succumbed myself into deep thoughts. Somehow I nudged the joysticks, Found my fingers before the triggers. Why? Maybe I wanted to see how my sister felt, but the awakening of the computer fished me out of my thoughts. I saw them, the markings, the language still lingered. From across the room, it moved towards one singular point. The central monitor, pitch black, but the language combined into a word. Illuminating itself with a crimson header ¡°Offline¡±. Crimson¡ It reminded me of her messy hair straight from the bed. Though, I¡¯ve always wondered. Why is her¡¯s red, while mine is black? No¡ I knew the answer all along. When our parents¡ died¡ Father left a dying message for me alone. The older brother. Or son¡ even so, she is still my family, the only one I cannot replace. For that very reason. What had drawn me towards the computer since that day. Beckoned me to click ¡°begin¡±. So I did, and with a flash, the world fell apart. Chapter 2: The Unknown Chapter 2: The Unknown The gentle streams rustled, the warmth bathed like the summer skies, while the breeze acted as the perfect balance. Cold and warm, the grass which tickled my bare skin, whistled as they waved like the seas. I inhaled the air, chewed more than my lungs could ever expand, and out it soothed my mind. When was the last time I left the surrounding urban skyscrapers? When was the last time I took her out to build castles out of sand, fight with sticks and leaves, or anything together at all? Before I knew, a chasm had already separated us both. Why¡ Why did I leave her alone within the shell, our house. All alone with her only friend, a computer? With a crowbar or two, I peered open my eyes from the past, and I frowned. For the first sight on my journey met me with a scorching burn, rainbow halos which seeped past my fingers. Suffice to say, anyone would cover away as their eyes adjusted to the beauty within the radiance. And so I did, from bright colours¡ To total darkness... What happened? I tried to move, but couldn¡¯t. Not an inch, nor an milimeter. Why? I could¡¯ve sworn that I covered my eyes from the dazzling light, and rose from the grass to see where I were. But now, nothing but absence of light surrounded me, and stiffened my body felt as well. As if my nerves and neurons never belonged to me in the first place. If uncomfortable is not the word, unnerving it is. Being unable to differentiate between eyes closed or open. But even then, within the dead silence. I still tried to gather my five senses, like breathe and taste the stagnant air. For one who couldn¡¯t move a muscle, there wasn¡¯t much I could actually do. Yet I still searched for the soft green grass which once cushioned me, only to return with cold hard steel. My heart skipped a beat. Fireworks exploded, or what I believed to be multiple firecrackers from a far. Yet quite unique, more deafening, more rhythmic and sharper as if the crackers ripped through air itself. Whatever it was, it seemed to close- My heart skipped another beat. ¡°Stabilisation of body condition has reached 100%.¡± A digital voice announced, and continued ¡°Commencing injection of dose UF-alpha-6.¡± I have no idea what had gotten into me, but the high pitched sound itched and shivered my spine, as if something dangerous extended forward beside my ear. Though I may not be able to identify the source, my brain knew from those few words that a sharp needle was about to pierce through my bare skin. What if an overdose occur? What if in actually it was heroin or crack? What if all of this was staged? I wanted to shake my head away from these thoughts, I wanted to think about the positives, like regaining my senses back through this injection. But my actions spoke louder. Breaths grew shorter and heart accelerated towards its melting point. In the end, fatal or not. The idea alone not knowing anything, scrambled my brain into disarray. I awaited my fate¡ Somewhere I¡¯ve never been nor ever knew. ... Perhaps it was my paralysis. Perhaps I was too afraid. Either way, I felt no pain, nor a gentle nudge. Only silence for the needle that retracted back towards its origins, and only a sigh of relief as my throbs eased itself from a cardiac arrest. ¡°Injection complete, commencing next phase.¡± You can fool me once or twice, the third announcement however, I was mentally prepared for! I boasted. But my heart tensed, cells went quiet as whatever I resided within shook. Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author''s consent. Report any sightings. The music of cogwheels rolled forth, while machinery crackled and roared as if old and rusty. Whatever their functionality served, it turned wheels of the platform 90 degrees till I stood upright on a smooth metallic surface that chilled my feet. ¡°Commencing exit of online. Please be patient as we stabilise the pressure.¡± Finally, some words that made sense! Just like how the system announced. Fans ventilated, pressure softened. But I cursed the filtration. Never did I expect particles of dust to fill my chamber, and no matter how much I wanted to scratch my tingling nose. I couldn¡¯t! The light before me caught my attention wide. Whatever I resided within, slowly and eventually retracted the two screens and revealed the outside world. Or so I thought, what separated me still, were a window of glass with a word spelled backwards, or rather presumably to be read from the other side. It said, ¡°Online.¡± ¡°Stabilization complete, welcome back participant 7-1-3-0¡± Participant? And 7-whut? What in hells did it mean. The glass retracted upwards, and helpless my knees fell forward. It hurt, kneecaps hit the floor, cheeks followed the pull of gravity and scratched against ceramic tiles. I wanted to scream in pain, yet mouth could not open. Neither could I shudder as the change in temperature engulfed me. Therefore, since gathering dust as I laid stomach first on the floor would not get me anywhere, and neither would the swollen pain vanish anytime soon. I surveyed the metallic wall before me, which glinted off the seeping light from the crackling cracks above. Where am I? Is this some kind of lab? Why so dark¡ Unable to move my neck or body. My iris glanced left and right, or in this case, from ceiling towards floor. Questions filled my mind. But most importantly, where is everyone? The firecrackers went off yet again, much louder, more precise, but what caught my ears more, was the hoarse groans before my very eyes. You! Hey, over here, you in the shadows! Please help me! I wanted to shout. Even though my sentences was quite rude and inappropriate. Truth be told, be it selfish or not. I¡¯ve had enough of waiting, especially after amassing a pile of questions awaiting for its turn. So having someone lend me a shoulder or an ear, is like striking the jackpot on the lottery. Either way, with a single glance. My new friend¡¯s body functions still did not function properly. They groaned, staggered, and with their stiff legs they took one prolonged step at a time. I couldn¡¯t imagine how I¡¯d fare myself when It was my turn to walk, nor if I wanted to communicate. Yes over here! You can do it! Take your time, no rush- I strangled my throat, kept my voice deep within the depths of the abyss, and froze like a pillar of ice. Rotten meat permeated the air, flies buzzed left and right. And the presumed source entered the light from the crack above. Skin peeled, bones between tissues, organs ripped and brown liquid dripping like blood. It was akin to a nightmare of a movie, which trembled every living atoms within my cell. ¡°GRAAAaaaaHHHH!¡± And so I knew, I had to avoid being bit at all cost.
Sorry, quite short but had no idea if I should have gone the RPG-fantasy route, Survival RPG, or the sci-fi ^^. Well, after all the rewriting and bashing my head against the wall, do enjoy! Chapter 3: The Inevitable Chapter 3: The Inevitable The dust turned moist, wet from the dripping drool. Eager, the mouth twitched. Groaned as it craved for the savoury meal before its unfocused eyes. As if instinct was all that was left within the pair of pale white. It wasn¡¯t just the staggering movements. The stench of decay churned my stomach, while maggots that crawled between rotten intestines made me frown. But no matter how ill, no matter how much the urge to vomit were. I was unable to peel my constricted pupils away from the once human creature, wounded as if other kin alike had ripped the bloody person apart. I had to move. I needed to crawl away, but I couldn¡¯t. Each time my chest pounded as I laid helpless on the floor. I repeated the very same question. What do I do? Desperation crept closer. Accursed thoughts couldn¡¯t find an answer. And while bones crackled for each baby stride, I have yet to move a single muscle. But then it registered. The realization that my fate, that my death was sealed, it blurred the world behind tears. Never had I imagined that my will was so fragile, the pillar that kept my torch burning. Deep inside, I still prayed for a miracle. Who wouldn¡¯t? I rather die without knowing, not be chewed alive piece by piece. But who¡¯s here to lend a hand? No one, nothing from miles away. For who knew my location, when even I did not? I wanted to laugh. What if all of this was staged? What if- I sighed. Truth laid bare before my very sight. Why deny it? All I could do was awaited my death, and watch as the creature narrowed the gap. Watch as the world lost all of its colors. Watch as each breaths of mine I exhaled, echoed and distorted my sense of time. Before long, everything had slowed to the point which they moved according to my beating heart. Flies, particles of dust, and even time itself. As if a greater being mocked me, gave me time to ponder about my past mistakes. Yet even so¡ Why¡ Why is life so unfair? ... ¡°What¡¯s the matter?¡± She asked. Yet when I recognized her tender voice, my eyes had already met with her emerald honesty. I curled up, and bursted into tears on my wet kneecaps once again. Of all people, why her? She spoke, presumably to cheer me up. But all I heard was one word, then a sigh, and a few more words before grass rustled from each of her distancing steps. Suffice to say, I payed no heed to any of them, only my sobs and tears I brushed away. With the passing of time, a quarter perhaps. A distant bell high above rang its musical chimes. Melodies which calmed my tears. Maybe coincidence was the word, or a hunch, but when I peeked over my wet forearms at the river bank. A pink dual popsicle covered my blurred scenery. I avoided her, looked elsewhere as I scraped my wet cheeks dry, and leaned against the crunchy bark. Why, why did you come back? I sniffed. But my thoughts never reached her, never did, and never will. She tugged her skirt between her pale thighs, and sat beside me within the shadows. Tongue licking the cold chill, as her mind wandered towards the skyscrapers, which reflected the summer skies. The bumblebees took flight, dandelions¡¯ fragrance had them dance, and as she swept her fringe sideways, her crimson hair fluttered with the breeze. Our eyes met, the pair of calm green like the leaves that rustled above. Silence was all we needed, and the way she snapped the popsicle into two, confessed it all. She smiled, and I looked away, cheeks burning yet fingers icy cold. For curiosity had caught the best of me once again. ¡°Here,¡± she said, and I hesitated. But eventually a sigh relieved the weight on my shoulders. I accepted the wet popsicle, and before any second thoughts could ever change my mind. Regret had me already shivering from the burning chill. She giggled. A gentle smile which melted my pain away. Sour yet sweet. The cold and juicy taste which froze her kindness within me. Before I knew, my cheeks became moist once again. ... How could I have forgotten? If creatures like these exist, wouldn¡¯t- It dawned upon me. I had to Move. Fingers, toes, legs, body or anything at all! FUCKING MOVE YOU PIECE OF USELESS SHIT! A finger flinched, and a spark relit my torch of hope. However, even something tiny can grow in size. I gasped for air, forced my blood to circulate quicker, faster, and fiercer. Even though it may not work. At least, as the groans raised my goosebumps, while spine itched from crackling bones that grew louder. My toes finally scratched the surface of the dust. Only a few more- I shuddered. A cold shade bathed over me, and a river of warm glue tingled down my back. No matter how much I wanted to shriek and fling my arm, patience held me back. I needed every second I could buy. The fangs extended, vanished behind my line of sight, and when a warm breath tingled my sweaty pores. I knew it was my que. My arm rocketed backwards from the floor, with a sheer force that sent the creature crashing down back first, scattering teeth and maggots around. Suffice to say, a price had to be paid. A scream which my bolt of adrenaline clashed against to keep at bay. But I bit my lips. Grit my teeth, and savoured the rustic blood, as I silenced my wail. After escaping the thin ice. I don¡¯t know what went through my chaotic mind. Next move nor plans. But I never looked back, never glanced anywhere. Not at the hoarse groans that asked for an apology. Not even my naked skin gathering dust from ceramic tiles, and especially not the groove of my dislocated shoulder. Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. All I heard was lungs gasping for the strangling air, and beating heart about to erupt like a volcano. I heaved forth, dragged limp arm and body straight towards the light. Perhaps the injection had something to do with it. But even with the stabbing pain, and weight taking its toll on my arm. My strides got me further with each crawl forward in the dim corridor filled with- I couldn¡¯t believe it. Did not want to believe it. Stasis chambers straight from a sci-fi movie. Either they were tucked inside or suspended from the metallic wall. However, what caught my curiosity was after the third chamber. Dried blood hidden beneath the thick dust, and three deep crevices carved across the wall of steel. My body stiffened, and silence befell me as my wide gaze rested upon the mangled chamber. Jagged sharp and deep red, an enormous rupture, as if some monster shoved their claws inside and ripped it open. No¡ At first, it teased with its claws. Let the wall beside wail its siren shriek, while each step brought it closer to the chamber, and nearer to the one unable to move. What if that person was me? A groan snapped me back to my senses, and I crawled. The thoughts alone hastened my pace, while at the same time could only be described as selfish, regardless of how I wished. Fortunately, from the clues of the built up dust, a lot of time must have passed since then. I grabbed the edge of the door and pulled myself out towards the left. I knew there was something of importance over- How did I know my way around? Screw the questions! I reminded myself, and pulled myself forth. Ugly groans growing weaker as I followed my guts past walls and corners dyed in blood. Eventually, as time passed, or rather around 2 minutes. My lungs already gasped for the strangling air, while I found myself in a large room with two stories tall walls. One guess would be the dining room, yet because of the knocked over tables and chairs, blocking my vision of the back end. Uncertainty found its way inside my mind. One thing for sure, the flickering lamps, and the walls of steel gave the eerie shudders of a prison. To add, no windows could be seen anywhere. Which lead me to believe, that something had to be kept out, or maybe kept inside. Whatever it may be, the shattered plates and glass, including culinaries scattered around the floor, told the stories of the struggles. A growl roared across the room. Instantly I laid low, and threw my glance everywhere¡ By the time I confirmed that the coast was clear, I sighed. Somehow, my guts was actually in search for food. Either way, before going anywhere, there is one thing I had to do to increase my chances of success. I made way towards a nearby standing chair. Threw my arm over it, and pulled myself up. Veins popped and arms trembled mad as I fought against gravity. Comon! My inner soul cheered, while sweat stung my eyes, and fueled my soul with fire. But the chair tilted, and I guarded my dislocated shoulder. Cheek smacked against the floor. It hurt, and like a tide, it raged, the eagerness to break the chair apart. If only it had not already slid further away from my clenched grasp. I took a deep breath, a pause to say. This time, I¡¯ll make sure that it won¡¯t happen- I choked on my breath, silenced my beating heart, and quickly yet quiet I forced my cheeks against the cold floor, breathing in the tingling dust. Where did it come from? I focused all my senses into my ear, searched for the noise. The banging noise as if something was moving through a small metallic space. It was not slow, rather it accelerated, as if something of interest have been found¡ Behind? No above! Bam! The fans and the grill of the ventilation clattered against the floor, echoed from the center across the room. Slowly, I traced backwards and hid next to a knocked over table. But before holding my breath to minimize my noises. I brushed away all nearby dust to make sure a sneeze wouldn¡¯t blow my cover. Whatever it was, it landed on chairs and tables. Did not scream nor trip, but broke them apart with its sheer weight. I looked towards the exit where I came from. Body irked for an immediate sprint, while my instinct screamed through loss of strength that it was not a wise choice, especially the state I am at now. The shards of grass crackled, tensed my muscles from the unnerving sound alone. And while a peculiar weight could be heard being dragged along by the creature across the floor. It shrieked, a weak and docile wail. Nevertheless that does not mean I could outrun it. Unlike the withered corpse eaten alive by parasites. The comparison between this one, is like comparing a rifle and a knife. Not only could it walk and force anything to slide away from its path, the sheer speed through the ventilation, had my imagination chain me in place. It was then I heard a groan, and I saw it. The creature with a broken neck, crawling with a leg bent 90 degrees. Death finally had me cornered. Shit...
Phew, finally I''m done <.<... Took a while. But still a bit unsatisfied. Might update this later on as I progress with the next chapter!
Updated :> It''s better than before at least!
