《Tharos Online》 Chapter 1: Logging in! *BEEP BEEP BEEP* I open my eyes, feeling sleepy. But sleep was not important, for today was the day. I rub my eyes as I get off my bed, shutting off the alarm clock. I had barely got a wink of sleep last night, since I was too excited about today.Today, I get my test results! It was 5:00 AM now, and I had kept an alarm, just so that I could check the results for my exams before my family. I hastily dressed myself, buttoning up my pajamas.I brushed and took a bath. Without a moment to spare, I immediately went towards my computer, wading through my mess of a room. I couldn¡¯t care less about cleaning up, so I just hurried to the computer and switched it on. I was feeling kinda nervous, but still expectant towards my results. I opened my school¡¯s site and checked the marks that I got. Waiting for my report to load, I absentmindedly kept clicking on the mouse, bored. The page loads and I check its content, nervous. ¡°Haaah¡ Thank god¡± I sigh in relief. Thankfully, I had accomplished the objective my parents had set for me. To get above 80% in the overall score. And I did it. I immediately switched tabs and opened my favorite site. Tharos Online. A recently released game. It was at the apex of technological innovation, being the first full immersion virtual reality game. The sense of reality was said to be surreal, and even I could gather that from the videos that were posted online. But from the player¡¯s reviews, it was said that unless you played it, you¡¯d never understand the beauty of it. The Brainhack, the capsule that was needed to play the game, sent some special electric signal to take over the brain¡¯s function. Although I had no idea how. The moment I¡¯d heard of it, I immediately begged my parents for one. They didn¡¯t refuse my request, rather set a goal for me. A goal which I accomplished. Just a few hours more, I thought to myself. Just a few hours more, and I¡¯ll be in that world. I clicked on the videos, and began watching the combat scenes of various players. And then I saw his video. Chaos¡¯s video. One of the top players in Tharos Online, Chaos breezed through the rankings and came to rank 14 in just a year. Currently speculated to be at almost level 312, Chaos¡¯s fighting style was extraordinary. He had some of the best equipment, and his skills were drool-worthy. He actively used skills like and other debuff like skills to reduce the opponent¡¯s agility. Then, he used his superior agility to overpower the opponent. I scrolled through the videos, watching random ones of quests and legendary equipments. ¡°Hoh~ The Unite guild gained a new territory huh¡± I muttered, scrolling through the guild news. Since Tharos Online also had typical MMO like features, guilds were not uncommon. In fact, there were more than thousands of guilds populating Tharos, and Unite was one of the major ones. The rays of the sun peeked past my window and the night slowly turned to day. I heard my mother calling for me, so excited, I ran downstairs. ¡°Ah. Woojin. We saw your results¡± Mother greets me with a pleasant smile as I enter the room. Her black hair was tied up in a bun behind her head, her calm black eyes fixed on mine. She sets down the cup, and gets up from the sofa. She comes close and hugs me. ¡°Your mother feels really happy Woojin! Like we promised, we¡¯ll buy that game for you!¡± Hehe. It feels good. I hugged mother back, feeling happy. ¡°Of course, if that game lets your grades drop, it¡¯ll be a different story!¡± Father talked to me from the dining room, looking at me from over his spectacles. He had a stern look on his face, but without doubt, even he was happy that I had scored this high. I¡¯m now second in the school rankings, so even Father can¡¯t complain. ¡°Come now, let¡¯s have some breakfast. Woojin, you can just order what you need online. Father won¡¯t say anything¡± Mother winks at me and ushers me to the table, gesturing me to sit. Breakfast~! ****************************************** ¡°Order!¡± I clicked the button, my anticipation shooting through the roof. Finally! Finally, I got the game! Tharos Online. My excitement couldn¡¯t be contained, and I just wanted to jump around. Expected delivery in: 1 hour. Looking at the info about the delivery, I couldn¡¯t help but finding it amazing. The popularity of Tharos Online was skyrocketing. It was obvious that a lot of people wanted to buy it. I spent that one hour browsing the site, reading guides and basic information. I enjoyed doing this, and I kept doing it from the moment I heard about this game about a year ago. To my amazement, the Hall of Fame had got an update. A player called SunWrath, had soared to rank 21. That was a huge jump from rank 70. I dreamed to be able to do it, and couldn¡¯t wait for the game. Finally, my long wait ended. I rushed to the door, hearing the knock. As I opened it, two older men stood there, wearing blue uniforms with caps. ¡°Is this Kim Woojin¡¯s house?¡± One of the men asked me, looking at the notepad in his hands. I nodded, and he quickly gestured to the other person with him. The man ran towards the gate, where a moving vehicle was present. Then, a couple of men, along with the man that went there, carried a box towards the house. To be honest, I could barely keep myself from just ripping apart the box and play it then and there. ¡°Well then, thank you for shopping with us. Enjoy the game, kid¡± One of the uncles pats my head as he leaves, and I bow in respect. He waves his hand, and gets into the vehicle. The vehicle moves away, and I wave goodbye to them. If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Unable to restrain myself, I dashed inside the house and headed to the now installed capsule in my room. ¡°Woojin, I know you have your holidays, and that you got that games, but you should come down here too!¡± ¡°Yes mother!¡± I lightly reply to mother and rush up the stairs, and barge into my room. My eyes widen in wonder, gazing at the wonder before me. A huge blue capsule, which was held inside a white structure. On it, the words Brainhack were written, in stylish italics. I could barely keep myself from drooling, and quickly shut the door. I shut the windows, covering the room in a dim light. I headed towards the capsule, anticipation welling up in me. A world of magic and swords. And I¡¯m going to be in it! I touched the surface of the smooth blue capsule, and pressed the button on the side. Slowly, the capsule opened, revealing a seat inside it. I climbed inside the capsule, settling down in the comfy seat. I pressed another button on the inside, and the capsule closed. I settled back into the seat and placed my hands on the armrest. Handcuff like structures grab my arms, and something like a steel cage covers my head. I close my eyes, and immerse myself into the game. ¡°Welcome, new user ¡° The words echo through my head, and the words Zedex gaming flash before my eyes. The game company that released Tharos Online. Then, suddenly, I was standing in a black space. It was pitch black throughout, but I could feel everything. I could move my body, as if I never were inside the capsule. It was a strange feeling. Then, a green light glowed from a distance. ¡°Welcome to Brainhack. This is a virtual space designed by it. Please do not be alarmed.¡± After a pause, the voice continued. ¡°We have completed a full body scan on you. Would you like to register yourself?¡± ¡°Yes¡± ¡°Creating new entry. Please state your name.¡± After some deliberation, I gave the name. ¡°Nexus¡± ¡°Please stand by¡. You have been registered. Would you like to enter the game?¡± ¡°Yep!¡± ¡°Entering game¡¡± The surroundings changed, and the dark space changed to a blinding white. ¡°Welcome, Nexus, to Tharos Online. Please pick your race¡± A list of races opened up before me.
Pure bloods
  • Human
  • Elf
  • Dwarf
  • Druid
  • Fairy
  • Qin
  • Undead
Half breeds
  • Melusine
  • Wendigo
  • Nephilim
I explored the list, trying to find one that seemed to be interesting. People could live almost however they wanted, enjoying the world of Tharos Online. Playing as a human would be best for me, but it would be terribly boring, since most people would choose it anyways. After pondering for a bit, I made my choice. ¡°Nephilim¡± It seemed cool too. The Nephilim were half Qin and half Druid. With debuffs and close combat as their forte, a Nephilim would be kinda cool to play, I think. ¡°This is the character modification space. You may modify your character here. You have been selected as the base, but you may change it if desired. ¡° Before me, a model of me appeared. It was like looking at a mirror, but there were some differences. I was taller, and a lot more paler. My face had some black markings, covering the area around my eyes and my chest. I moved closer to it, wondering how to modify it. Struck by inspiration, I thought of changing my hair to white, and it immediately changed. Continuing with it, I went wild with it, and changed myself a lot more. A bit taller, with a few more muscles. I changed the hair to a dark blue. But I couldn¡¯t modify the red irises, since it seemed that it was a racial trait. ¡°Done¡± ¡°Pick your starting position¡± A map opened up before me, highlighting several places. The world in Tharos Online was huge. And what made it huge was that there were two worlds. The world that users could play in, and a rumored secret world, that was still unexplored and undiscovered. There were X¡¯s and O¡¯s. ¡°Um, what are those?¡± I asked the AI, doubtful whether it would respond. ¡°The crosses represent areas that are not suggested for your race, since it may be that your race might not be welcome there. The circles represent areas that are recommended for you¡± I randomly selected a kingdom, the Sevia kingdom. It was a bit east in the map of Tharos, away from the central continents. The central continents would be crowded I figured. I might travel there, after I get stronger. ¡°Confirm choices?¡± All three of my choices floated before me, and I gave my affirmation. By now, I was pretty much raring to run free in the game, adrenaline pumping through me. ¡°Welcome to Tharos Online, Nexus¡± Chapter 2: A Whole New World A bright light blinded me, forcing me to shut my eyes. I could still feel my eyes stinging with pain, but I bore with it. Slowly, the light turned dimmer, until it became comfortable. I tentatively opened my eyes, letting the sight flood into me. ¡°Th..This is a game?¡± I was standing atop a set of marble white stairs, my view extending over the sight below. A huge town spread out around me, with houses and shops and what not. I could hear the voices from below quite clearly, almost as if it were real. I looked behind me, to see a lot of people standing there, wearing grey tunics, looking around in wonder. Behind them, loomed a huge cathedral, with four snow white spires, and a multi colored glass near the top. The entrance of the cathedral was huge, with white doors that looked like freshly fallen snow. I looked down at myself, seeing the same grey tunic that the others wore. I was amazed at the quality. I could see each thread wound around the other, each frayed end, and even the spots of dust on my clothes. I took a step forward, hesitant, and stumbled. It felt weird. This body was different from the one I had in real life, and it feels alien to me. My arms were white, with faint markings over them. I could see them only upon close inspection, as they were almost obscure on my pearly white skin. I touched my body, and an unnatural feeling spread through me, the smoothness of my skin astounding me. I stepped forward, stumbling again, but kept moving. One step on the first step, and moved down the stairs, away from the cathedral. A cascade of people were leaving already, heading towards the buildings. As soon as I stepped down the last step, a semi transparent blue window hovered before me.

I uncertainly touched the screen, and it disappeared. Woah, that¡¯s cool. ¡®Status¡¯ As I thought that, another screen opened up before me. [/b] [tr]

Hou~ Level 1 huh. Nothing special in my stats too. Hm? Intelligence and Wisdom are lower than strength and Agility. Is it because of the race? At the top of the window, an miniature figure of me stood, wearing the same clothes as I was. A small chest like button was next to it. When I touched it, another window, called inventory came up. It had nothing in it except 10 loaves of bread, a can of water and 1 silver. The necessities? I closed the inventory by swiping it away, and kept checking the other features. My equipment was a grey tunic, grey pants, and a knife. I checked the knife, excited. As I clicked on it, a knife materialized in my hand, forming from small blue crystals. I tried swinging it, amazed at how real it felt. I could feel the rugged handle of the knife, the feeling of the blade cutting through the air. It was not as heavy as I expected. Must be the strength stat. I checked the knife, and another window opened up before me. Find this and other great novels on the author''s preferred platform. Support original creators!
Novice Knife
Damage:3-5Durability:40 / 40

A common knife made by an uncommon craftsman. It is made to be extremely sturdy, but it provides less damage than desired.
Hm.. A common knife huh. What if it breaks? Maybe I¡¯d have to fight barehanded then? I kept swinging the knife, trying to get a feel on how to use it. Absent mindedly, my eyes wandered over the market like setup before me. Many users, just like me, were slowly discovering the functions of Tharos Online. That said, this game is amazing. Even now, I can feel a gentle wind brush my hair. I wonder if I have any skills? ¡®Skills¡¯ As I thought that, another window opened up. The introduction didn¡¯t mention it, but there¡¯s a mention of it in the Help section, I think.
Skill Name:Skill Type:Skill Level:Skill Experience:
Sharp EyesActiveNovice0%
A racial skill of the Nephilim, Sharp Eyes lets one enhance their eyesight in order to see far and beyond, or enhance the quality of sight. Cost: 1 mana/sec
Sharp Eyes huh. How do I use it? Do I just think it? I tried thinking the command, but nothing worked. It can¡¯t be, right? ¡°Sharp Eyes!¡± As soon as the words left my mouth, my sight expanded and contracted. It got dyed by a reddish tinge, and my eyesight without a doubt, sharpened. I could count how many threads were frayed on that user¡¯s tunic, or the picture that was drawn on the wall of a house, a few meters away. I could feel a slight drop in my energy, so I closed my eyes. The drop stopped, and when I opened my eyes, my eyesight had returned to normal. If it were a normal RPG game, this wouldn¡¯t have been impressive, but in this world, the sensation itself was exhilarating. Now, what do I do? Kill monsters, I guess? I placed the knife into my inventory, and began walking into the town. Yup. Exploration first. Sevillia town. It was quite far off from the capital of Sevia kingdom, but it was a nice place nevertheless. There was no major race discrimination, and people lived happily here. People were all around in the crowded streets, and I could identify that some of them were users. Their equipment itself was a statement, and this one guy had such a cool looking sword, I was practically one step away from drooling over it. The town felt like¡ well a town. There were people happily chatting and laughing, merchants selling their merchandise, and I even saw a quarrel. It seemed so lifelike, that I would¡¯ve believed this was real if it were not for the game elements. The town was full of medieval Europe kind of buildings, I wandered to the edge of town, where a huge grassy plain spread out before me. Numerous users were running around, chasing after small green balls of some kind. ¡°Sharp eyes!¡± I used my skill, and the sight became clear. The balls, were small creatures, with cactus like spikes on them. They were covered with dark and light green spikes, and bounced around the field. Monsters! The users chased them around, trying to stab them. Occasionally, they would jump and tackle the users, burying their spikes into their skins. I could see some of the green balls turning into ash here and there. People hunted in groups, while some hunted alone too. Suddenly, someone called out to me. ¡°Oi, kid. You an other worlder too?¡± I turn around, to see an old man, with cropped red hair. He was short and overweight, with bright blue eyes. I continue to stare at him, unsure on how to respond. ¡°Hm? I guess you might be nervous eh? Nice to meet ya, I¡¯m Eadbor. What might your name be?¡± ¡°Wo-Nexus¡± ¡°So~ Nexus, you an other worlder?¡± ¡°Other worlder?¡± I answer his question with a question, puzzled. An other worlder? ¡°You came from the cathedral right?¡± Eadbor asks me, pointing with his thumb towards the white cathedral. Huh, I could see it even from here. It was really tall huh. I nodded, showing my affirmation. ¡°Hrm.. But you look sorta different kid, with that color of yours.. You human?¡± Huh. Would this be related to something like affinity levels? If I wasn¡¯t human, he would hate me? ¡°I¡¯m human¡± I decided to lie, just in case. Eadbor nodded, and looked thoughtful. Then, he began speaking. ¡°Oi kid. I need you to do me a favor. Can you deliver this to old lady Jennings? She lives near the eastern watchtower. You¡¯ll know when you see her¡± *Ding*
Congratulations! You have obtained your first quest. Completing quests will give you rewards and possible chain quests. Bear in mind ,that failing to complete a quest could lead to a drop in reputation, which would make it more difficult for you to obtain quests.
Eadbor''s Request
The Retired adventurer, Eadbor has a request of you. He needs you to deliver a package to Old Lady Jennings, who lives near the eastern watchtower. Difficulty: F Quest requirements: Meet up with Eadbor Rewards: Unknown
Huh. I got a quest. Chapter 3: Of Dumplings and Death ¡°Oh alright ! I¡¯ll do it.¡± I took the bag from Eadbor and put it in my inventory. He patted my shoulder and walked away, smiling. I checked the inventory screen again, and it was there, named ¡®Eadbor¡¯s package¡¯. I clicked on it to open the description, curious.

I quickly closed the description screen, as I spotted another small symbol hovering in the air before me. It looked like a scroll of sorts. I tapped on it, opening another window. [td4]THE OTHERWORLERS IN THAROS

Empty quest slot [/td4
The Otherworlders in Tharos? When did I ever get that quest? Also, I only have 3 quest slots? Hm, maybe it¡¯s because if there¡¯s too many, people would just stack quests, never solving them. But it¡¯d be a pain if they couldn¡¯t get an important quest just because the slots were full. Oh, there¡¯s a ¡®drop quest¡¯ option huh. Convenient. I opened the unknown quest, puzzled.
The Otherwolders in Tharos
Recently, strangers have been popping up all over Tharos, some with no clue where they are, and others without any knowledge of this world. You are one of these otherworlders, but have no clue as to why this is happening. Explore and find the reason of your arrival in Tharos. Difficulty: Story quest Quest requirements: Explore Tharos Discover the reason for the arrival of the otherworlders. Rewards: Unknown
I closed the window, more confused than before I read it. Why the otherworlders arrived? That¡¯s easy. Because we¡ bought the game? I do understand the need for a plot point to propel the story, since a compelling story would be nice. Well, it¡¯s sort of like a passive quest, so I can just ignore it and it won¡¯t even matter. I stood there, in the middle of the path, without any idea where to go. Unsure of the location of the eastern watchtower, I just stared around, trying to find a solution. Geez, a minimap would be helpful! Finally making up my mind, I asked the nearby store owner about the eastern watchtower. ¡°Hello!¡± ¡°What might yo-¡. you be needing kid?¡± The bandanna wearing middle aged man stared at me with suspicious eyes, his hands tensed. Geez, I thought my race was accepted here. Or maybe, my race won¡¯t be met with much hostility. Right. ¡°Could you tell me where the eastern watchtower is?¡± Wearing a pleased smile, I asked the shopkeeper. He relaxed just the tiniest bit, before pointing to my left, further in to town. ¡°Keep headin¡¯ that way, and you¡¯ll get to the eastern exit. Then, just look for the tall tower.¡± Thanking him¡ªhe did seem relieved when I left¡ªI headed towards the eastern exit. Constantly amazed at the visuals of this game, the clamor and bustle in this ground, one would almost believe he was living in this world. Maybe that¡¯s what the developers planned for. To make it seem as real as possible. And that¡¯s why they introduced that Otherworlders quest. I kept using Sharp Eyes as I walked along the busy roads, intent on gaining experience if even a bit. It rose slowly, by almost 1% if I used it for 2 minutes. And as it got to almost 8%, the increase visibly slowed down. Hm, maybe I should improvise to increase skill proficiency? This town was kind of small. In almost 20 minutes, I had already walked across town. Hm, perhaps I should have selected a bigger town? Sort of like a city I guess. The eastern exit was clearly marked, with a wooden gate like structure just beyond the last building. At the top, some old leaves hung. Possibly a good charm of sort. God, this game gave severe attention to detail. At the eastern exit, I looked around, intent on finding the big tower that the shop keeper had so helpfully told me about. Oh boy did I spook him. ¡°There it is!¡± I spotted the tower about 30 meters away from town, with a small cluster of shacks around it. It was tall and dark, possibly as camouflage. I used ¡®Sharp Eyes¡¯, and could make out the small holes in the tower. Stuff for archery huh? I could almost not make out anything, so I strain my eyes more. My vision was tinged with an even deeper shade of red, and the energy consumption suddenly skyrocketed. My body was getting hotter, and I could almost feel myself steaming. My mind felt groggy with the sudden boost in consumption and the skill got cut off. Another window opened up before my eyes.
[[Warning! Mana Exhaustion! You have exhausted your mana. Please wait for it to recover! ]]
Sigh, mana exhaustion huh. I checked my status screen, and there it was. Mana- 0/50 blinking red. Can I not see how much mana I have during skill usage? Checking it by opening the status everytime might be tedious. I might have to tinker around with the settings a bit then. After about 10 seconds, the weariness wore off, and I set off towards the tower. Old lady Jennings is surely there. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Interestingly, the increase in sharp eyes was substantial this time around. It increased to a whopping 15%, just by using up my mana for it. I couldn¡¯t repeatedly do it, but it was still a find. And who knows, there might be a debuff for repeatedly exhausting mana. I placed my hand on the black stone as I got next to the tower. The walk was nice. Sort of like a real walk. The stone felt rugged and cool to the touch. Tracing the outlines of the stone blocks, I walked towards the house that was obviously the target place. A small shack with an old lady sitting outside it. She sat in a chair, knitting a sweater of sorts. Her silver hair was tied up in a bun, and the numerous wrinkles on her face signified her age. Yup, definitely old lady Jennings. I walked up to the old woman, and as soon as i got close, she looked up from the knitting. I raised my hand in greeting, and she smiled sweetly. Geez, even the NPCs seem real. ¡°Old lady Jennings?¡± ¡°Why yes, it¡¯s me. You were searching for me, child?¡± ¡°Ah, yes. Eadbor wanted me to deliver a package to you?¡± ¡°Oh? Eadbor huh? That kid still remembers to send something to this frail old lady¡It has been a month since my son died, and these kids still send me food on a regular basis¡¡± I retrieved the package from my inventory and handed it over to her. After recieving it, she opened up the small wrapped package, and in it were-- Dumplings. Steaming hot, judging from the steam rising from it. The old lady looked warmly at the dumplings and then directed her gaze towards me. ¡°Why, thank you for delivering this child. What might your name be?¡± ¡°Nexus¡± ¡°Well then Nexus, have a dumpling. And thank you for making this old woman¡¯s day¡¡± *DING* The sound echoed as two new symbols popped up. One with a scroll and an exclamation mark, the other with a treasure chest. Guessing what the contents were, I tapped on the scroll first.
QUEST COMPLETE!
Eadbor''s Request
Stricken by sadness due to her son''s death, old lady Jenning''s only solace were the gifts her son''s comrades sent her, reminding her of how proud she could be of her son. By delivering Eadbor''s package, you have successfully alleviated some of her worries.
A huge chest spilling coins decorated the upper part of the window. A secondary window popped up as soon as the rewards window opened. I got some XP. a dumpling, and 10 copper coins. Huh, I got paid.
Congratulations! You have gained XP. Completing quests, defeating enemies, there are a multitude of ways to gain XP throughout the game. Gain XP to level up and gain stat points. Stat points will enable you to develop your character in a way unique to you!
¡°10 copper huh. Well, now that I¡¯m done with this quest, I should really get to leveling up now.¡± I looked a bit farther into the wide fields, where the little green balls were still hopping around. Equipping my knife, I set forth to kill my first prey. ¡°Get. Back. Here!¡± I struggled to catch those bouncy little pests, much less kill them. They were like rubber balls, bouncing away quicker than I could bury my knife in them. I dived to catch the ball, but it bounced away in the nick of time and rolled away from me. Damnit. This is hard! Not willing to give up, i tried once more with a horizontal slash at the little ball. Surprisingly, it hit. With a wordless squeal it was pushed away by my slash, and the little white eyes on it shut tight due to pain. Triumphant at my first hit, i proceeded to finish it off. Or so I thought. The ball monster quickly bounced away and tackled my stomach, knocking the air out of my lungs. Startled, I tried to regain the offense by smacking the ball away, but it gave me no respite as it immediately started its next assault. The next hit hurt quite a bit as I was sent staggering. The ball bounced back, and then charged at me again. This time, it accurately hit me in the jaw, sending me sprawling onto the ground.
You have been stunned! Having met with a powerful blow, debuffs will be applied for the next few seconds. ¡¤ Unable to move properly ¡¤ -2 to all stats for 10 minutes
My body was numbing all over as I struggled to regain control. I could barely make sense as my thoughts were sent into a whirlwind from the sudden stun. My vision suddenly turned hazy, and the voices I heard became muffled. I could feel some hits to my abdomen. Probably the ball huh. A new screen opened up before me, much more defined than what I could see.
STUNNED : 00:20
But as soon as the timer reached 10, my vision flickered, and slowly turned black. Then, a new window opened up.

YOU DIED!

Too bad! Your first death! Death incurs a 12 hour penalty during which you are not allowed to play the game. It will also result in the drop in all the skill proficiencies. After logging in, you will have reduced stats for an hour. Thank you for playing! <3
I couldn¡¯t even comprehend what had happened, before I felt my arms again. The things restraining my arms loosened, and I slowly climbed out of the capsule. I slumped onto my bed, berating myself for dying so quickly. I hadn¡¯t played the game for more than an hour, and I already died. The game had a 3:1 ratio with it being 3 times faster than real life time. I played for only about 20 minutes, and I died miserably to the first mob I found¡ Damn it. Wait, all this happened because I didn¡¯t have enough information. All right, I¡¯ll thoroughly check out the game¡¯s help section the next time I log in. Man, reading through all that stuff is going to be a pain¡ AUTHOR!! This chapter was seriously a real pain. THE TABLES! SO NIGHTMAROUS!! (Totally a made up word *winks* ) Errors just kept popping up, so in the end, I ditched most of the tables and windows and replaced them with Bold letters and double brackets! [[ ]]!!!! Hope you enjoy! Chapter 4: Victory! ¡°I really should have checked out the help section¡¡± I logged in again the next day, disappointed with the drop in skill proficiency. I read through the help section, waiting for the one hour deadline to pass. I had lost a whopping 6% from my previous 15% skill proficiency in Sharp Eyes. Also, apparently the game log had recorded it, but I had obtained a new skill, Knife skill. From the help, I learnt that a user can only have a limited number of skills active at a time. Even for passive skills. If I learnt [Sword mastery] and [Knife mastery] skills, I could only choose one of the two to level up. In other words, the build I choose would be the build I¡¯d have to use for life. Since the default weapon that everyone gets during the start is a knife, the [Knife mastery] skill that is obtained can be easily replaced. If I learnt [Sword mastery], then the skill proficiency I learnt from [Knife mastery] would drop to 0%, and it would be registered as an inactive skill. Unless I lose my swords and have no choice but to use my knife, every time I attempt to use a knife for combat as my main weapon, the [Knife mastery] skill would replace the [Sword mastery] skill, and I¡¯d have to start all over again. The only way to not lose the proficiency I gained in [Sword mastery] and still retain some amount of usability with the knife is to get a class related to [Sword mastery], so that my default weapon would be the sword. The offer for classes would be given by the AI whenever I fulfill some conditions to be classified for said class. I¡¯m free to accept or decline the class, or if I wish, I can just postpone the decision. Apparently, if some unknown conditions are satisfied, a multi class build can be obtained. Also, skills were stuff like [Knife mastery] and [Sword mastery], but things like combat skills were registered as sub skills under the respective master skills. I couldn¡¯t help but yawn as I read through the Help section. I had skimmed over skills and the like, and was checking out the HUD settings now. I could set a HP, MP and SP bar as my HUD if I wanted to. Actually, I could even customise how I wanted the HUD to look like. My EXP bar, my class, my stats, I could even cloud my vision with the HUD! I selected a simple setup for my HUD, complete with HP, MP and SP bar. A little red ¡®X¡¯ hovered in the corner of my vision, indicating that I was in a powered down state now. Due to the death, I had quite a reduction in stats, almost halving it. As of now, I would be toast if I faced that green ball right now. I quickly switched to the combat section, intent on finding out how to beat that damn rubber ball. The combat system in Tharos was dependent partly on the player¡¯s actual real life skills. But since it wasn¡¯t possible for everyone to be proficient at martial arts and such, the AI developed the ¡®specialised¡¯ combat system. In the combat ¡®mode¡¯, beginners and the like get a more slowed version of the game. The enemies move slower, and they can make sense of what¡¯s happening so that they don¡¯t wimp out. Until level 10, the AI¡¯s system will show the way to hit the enemy to deal some damage, how to dodge, and all the required information. The slowed time function will help said newbie to gather his courage and attack. But after level 10, this combat mode would be disabled. The combat mode is optional, since there are some who would love to just fight all out and test their abilities. Also, time gets faster the more you level up. So, it¡¯s recommended that users solo play until level 10 so that they can get the hang of combat. Without any second guesses, I immediately enabled combat mode. A small blue ¡®C¡¯ popped up in the corner of my vision. Hm. I immediately edited my HUD to make it more compact so that it doesn¡¯t occupy as much space. I deliberated on the value for the realism setting. The greater the realism, the more the pain. The maximum pain that could be felt would be 55% while the least that could be felt was like a sting when even the strongest attack hits you. I set it at about 30%, willing to have a bit more pain to get the adrenaline pumping. I scrolled through the rest of the help, hoping to find if I could get anymore useful tips. Suddenly, another notification greeted me.
Your satiety levels are at 30%! Consume food to raise satiety levels. Debuffs will be applied when levels fall to 15%. If satiety falls to 0%, HP will begin to decrease!
My stomach growled the moment the notification appeared, and I felt like I was really quite hungry. Huh. Satiety levels eh? I quickly opened up the settings and checked the HUD. There it was. The satiety levels. I must have just glossed over it. I added the satiety level to my HUD, and 30% appeared next to my HP bar. It was blinking, indicating that I should eat something. I quickly retrieved a bread loaf from my inventory and tore into it. It tasted quite bland, but I kept chewing on it, somehow stomaching the tastelessness of the loaf. The number rapidly increased from 30 to 50%, and stopping at 75% when I finished it. Satiety is quite a terrifying concept. Unless I quickly earn money, I won¡¯t be able to live in game, because death by starvation would be really common. ¡°Hey there! You¡¯re a user too?¡± Suddenly, someone greeted me. Startled, I turned back, quite vigilant. A boy who looked about as old as me, with long flaming red hair and eyes stood there. But something about him was similar to me. His pale skin. It was the same as me. ¡°You picked the Nephilim race too huh?¡± He came and plopped down next to me. I was too bewildered by this sudden conversation. He turned to look quizzically at me and waved his hand at my face. ¡°Lo? You there?¡± ¡°Uh? Um yeah¡± ¡°Well, I¡¯m Bladester!¡± He extended his hand towards me, smiling. I awkwardly shook his hand, still quite surprised at the conversation. I was conversing with a complete stranger! And it felt so real. He looked expectantly towards me, and I remembered that he was introducing himself. ¡°Um, I¡¯m Nexus.¡± ¡°Nexus huh? You new to Tharos?¡± ¡°Yeah.¡± ¡°Me too. I joined three days before. What level you at Nexus?¡± ¡°Level 1. I joined really recently¡± The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there. ¡°Level 1 huh. I¡¯m at 2 now. Didn¡¯t you go hunting?¡± ¡°Haha.. I died when I tried it¡¡± ¡°Hm? Even with the combat mode?¡± ¡°I didn¡¯t even know about it¡¡± ¡°Haha~! Tough luck Nexus.¡± Suddenly, I found myself enjoying the talk with him. ¡°What class are you aiming for ?¡± ¡°Hm? I¡¯m going for the Archer class. You know, like Robin Hood and stuff¡± He did an impression of shooting an arrow, pulling at the string of an imaginary bow. Heh, Archer class huh? ¡°Archer? Isn¡¯t it really expensive to become an archer?¡± ¡°It is. But it depends on the skills you have. If you choose to level up [Crafting] to at least Intermediate, I could easily make my own arrows. Anyways, arrows go for 1 silver for a 100, so it¡¯s not really that bad.¡± ¡°I guess. Classes huh?¡± ¡°You didn¡¯t choose one yet?¡± ¡°Well, I guess I¡¯d go for something that involves swords and stuff.¡± ¡°A warrior class?¡± ¡°Warrior seems too bland for me. Something a bit more cool sounding maybe¡± He chuckled, and I started to feel embarrassed. Well it¡¯s true anyways. I always felt that the Warrior class was a bit bland. ¡°Well, everyone have their own preferences I guess.¡± The conversation then lapsed into silence, and we just sat there, enjoying the view of the grassy plains spreading out before us. A few minutes later, Bladester stood up. ¡°Ah. I got to go now. My party¡¯s calling me! It seems I am needed.¡± ¡°See ya¡± ¡°Let¡¯s register each other on the friend¡¯s list. ¡° ¡°Hm? How do I do that?¡± ¡°You really don¡¯t know even that ? Dude, you are SO dead.¡± ¡°Ahaha. Please don¡¯t say it like that¡¡± ¡°Well, you just open the Friends list and say ¡®Register Friend¡¯ at the person and¡ Voila!¡± A notification appeared before me as soon as he said that.
Bladester wants to register you as a friend. Accept?
YesNo
I tapped on the Yes, and a new window appeared, titled Friend¡¯s list. At the very top, Bladester was present. ¡°Well then, I¡¯ll contact you if anything interesting comes up!¡± ¡°Interesting?¡± ¡°Well, we might meet again in the future right? So it¡¯d be useful if I have someone I know.¡± He winked and ran away. Huh. So he just makes friends in case he needs help someday. Speaking of leaving, the little X started blinking right now. The powered down state is almost gone. After about a minute, the X vanished, and I suddenly ¡®felt¡¯ myself getting more power. This is just too awesome! Without waiting anymore, I set out, intent on beating that stupid ball this time around. As I ran towards the hunting zone, I thought about my strategy to beat them. Kicking or punching them would do no good since their spikes might pierce my skin and deal major damage to me. I did have a 1% resistance to Piercing, but it might not be enough. Stabbing was also difficult, since the thing was like rubber. Most of my hits get deflected since I¡¯m not really a great stabber. Slashing is the only option, but it leaves me wide open for a counter attack. I need to figure out a way to attack it and quickly retreat. It might take me a few tries. This time, I¡¯d win. This time, that ball is gonna die! I spot my target as it rolls carelessly a few feet away from me. ¡°Here I come, My XP!!!¡± Without pausing, I immediately drew the knife. Before it could escape by bouncing, I prepared to swing the knife. And then it happened. Time slowed down. It was mind blowing. I felt like I was moving super slowly, but my mind was still racing. A red circle appeared below me, and below the ball. A notification alerted me that I was in combat mode, but I ignored it, choosing to fight. In front of me, holograms of me appeared. Weirdly transparent, they looked like me, standing in various positions. ¡®The AI assist is awesome¡¯ I couldn¡¯t help think that as I rotated the knife, holding it with the blade pointing downwards. Just like the holograms indicated, I run through them, almost perfectly superimposing their actions. I edged closer to the ball who was alerted of my approach. It prepared to jump away. But without pause, I bent down, and swung the knife upwards with all my strength. The sound of rubber ripping greeted my ears, along with the squeal of my hated enemy. The ball was sent flying like a ripped balloon. Some green goo splattered around from it. The gash on it remained open, and I could see the green mush inside it. It rolled twice and then turned towards me, glaring hatefully.
CRITICAL HIT!! Your unprecedented slash, accompanied by the dash has dealt major damage!
  1. 2X Damage bonus for Surprise attack
  2. 2X Damage bonus for a charging attack
Time moved so slowly that I could read the entire message and still roll away from the attempted tackle of the green ball. I immediately slashed at it again, giving it more damage. This time, I would win. The ball rolled around once, and then rushed towards me. It jumped at my chest midway. Without panicking, I immediately followed the instructions of the AI. Grasping the hilt of the knife with both my hands, I drove the blade through the green ball, shredding it into two. It couldn¡¯t even scream as it shattered into pieces of light. I killed it. I gasped as I looked towards the HUD. I had exhausted my stamina, and a bit of my HP from the stab just now. The stab wasn''t perfect, so I got some damage. ¡°I¡ I won..¡± For me, it was almost like I won a boss battle. AUTHOR!!! Nexus here! Another chapter done. If there are any of you wondering (I sure do hope so) I WILL be updating Descendant of the Demon Lord soon. I just need to figure out a few kinks in the current situation, so I''ll be updating really soon. REALLY REALLY SOON!!! Gyahahahaha~! Nexus out! Chapter 5: A Thrilling Battle ¡°XP bar..¡± I sighed, tired from the battle. My first kill in the game. I¡¯d be lying if I said that it wasn¡¯t exciting. A window opened up, showing the amount of XP that I had earned. Huh. I got about 14% by killing one of the balls. Meaning I¡¯d have to kill at least 7 more to get to the next level. 7 more of these battles huh. I¡¯m sure I¡¯d get the hang of it by then. I waited for my stamina bar to refill as I twirled the knife around in my hand. Suddenly, it struck me. Curious, I checked the skills.
Skill Name:Skill Type:Skill Level:Skill Experience:

Increased damage and effectiveness with Knives. Novice level : +2 Damage with Knives.

Sharp EyesActiveNovice9%
A racial skill of the Nephilim, Sharp Eyes lets one enhance their eyesight in order to see far and beyond, or enhance the quality of sight. Cost: 1 mana/sec
Hm.. 4% in [Knife Mastery] and 9% in [Sharp eyes]. I quickly need to increase the skill proficiencies. The damage boost from the [Knife mastery] skill is useful. It might¡¯ve helped out in the fight too. Suddenly, I noticed the state my clothes were in. I didn¡¯t pay attention since they were just the beginner clothes, but the grey tunic was ripped in several places. I realised how my clothes got ripped due to the attacks from the ball. Meaning the damage is carried over huh. But what will I do if it gets completely ripped? Will I have to wander naked? But I¡¯m sure the game won¡¯t allow such a thing to happen. Also, the ripping of clothes is probably just to bring in a sense of realism. Noticing that my SP bar had filled up, I immediately activated sharp eyes and looked around for new prey. I needed to kill 7 of these buggers, and I need to do it fast. Bladester reminded me how slow I am in the game. ¡°All right! On to the next one!¡± ¡°Haa.. Haa¡¡± I gasped for breath as I faced off against the sixth green ball. I killed five of them until now, and somehow got my experience up to about 70% successfully. But the sixth one was on an entirely different level. It stood before me, but unlike the others which were green, this one had turned a bright red. It was literally letting off some steam as it rolled about, glaring at me with its now red eyes. The combat mode did slow down time, but this thing was sort of faster than the others. I couldn¡¯t react as quickly to it, and I got hit twice. I eyed my HP bar, feeling nervous. I can¡¯t die now! I somehow managed to get sharp eyes to 10%, and if I died, I would lose a lot of that precious skill proficiency. My HP bar was at 79 now, and dropping. A little droplet of blood was positioned next to it, indicating the bleeding debuff. And I am bleeding. I could feel the fresh blood pouring out of the holes it punched in me. The front of my ragged tunic was stained a deep red with my blood. My head felt strangely light headed, but thankfully it didn¡¯t progress too much. I diverted my attention towards the little white window in the right corner of my vision.
STUNNED: 00:07
Seven more seconds huh. My HP bar blinked red and decreased to 72. Damn it. If I moved, the decrease would be even more. Apparently ending its resting time, the ball rushed towards me, quicker than ever. I tried to do the stab to deal some great damage to it, but the ball had a trick up its sleeve. It spun at a great speed as it flew towards me. Realizing my mistake, I tried to stop the stab, but it was already too late. My knife¡¯s blade collided against the spinning spikes of the ball. My hand got pushed away from the ball, my knife along with it. To add to my misery, the knife flew out of my hand, landing a few feet away from me. The ball continued on its trajectory and rammed into my now completely defenseless chest. I bit back the need to howl as its spikes pierced my chest and spun, digging deeper than before into my chest. Even the goo from the gash I had opened up on it when I first attacked mixed with my flesh and flew with it. Then with a final push, the ball pressed its spike deep into my chest, imprinting the heat and the sharpness of its spikes on me as it jumped away from me. I staggered onto my knees, almost blanking out from the pain. The ball rolled away, standing next to my now out of hand knife. Damn it. This situation is what¡¯s getting out of hand... I looked towards my HP bar, confirming my status. Dang it. I only had about 46 HP remaining. This bugger is really annoying. The bleeding status had evolved or something, and now showed two droplets. I could check the notifications to see what happened, but I turned it off so that it won¡¯t distract me. The timer now showed 25 seconds, and without doubt, I¡¯m in deep trouble. Running away is not an option since that would mean I would lose the knife. The HP bar blinked and then the numbers reduced again. Now a total of 4 HP was lost. The counter dropped down to 24, and I realised how bad the situation was. 24 seconds. 4 HP per second. And I have about 46 left. No matter how I slice it, in about 12 seconds, I¡¯d be dead meat. Even if I win, there¡¯s no chance for me to survive. The HP loss would kill me anyways. Just as I was about to resign myself to death, a new thought entered my mind. Food. In most games, food recovers HP right? So if I survive this now, I can hopefully eat some bread and not die. Well, I¡¯d regret not trying anyways. I struggled back onto my feet, and lurched towards the ball. The AI gave me several warnings on not to do it, but I still went for it. Just like I expected, the ball rolle- Wait, why is it preparing to jump at me? This wasn¡¯t what it was supposed to do. The spike ball shot forwards, aiming at my face. This is going to hurt. The ball collided with my face, splattering fresh blood from my broken nose. But bearing the brunt of the attack, I grabbed onto the ball with one arm--The spikes were quite painful as they tore into my skin-- and reached for my knife. A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation. My HP kept dropping every instant I kept hugging onto that little red ball of agony. My HP dropped to 30, and then I started to get desperate. Finally my fingers curled around the kn- Ouch-- My HP dropped by an additional 2 as I grasped the blade of the knife. Well damn me. I twirled the knife around, grasping it by the hilt. I struggled to keep the ball under control as it squirmed in my arm, dealing more damage by the minute. Without pause, I drove the blade into the ball. It squealed in my arms, and renewed its efforts to escape. My HP dropped to 25, and the counter reached 20 seconds. I had to finish this quickly. I raised my arm again and gave another stab to it. And another. And another. Until it finally burst into little specks of light. Time sped up again, and I lay there, gasping for breath. My stamina was completely depleted, and my HP was almost getting in to the danger area. I quickly retrieved the bread from my inventory and tore into it. The taste of blood and bread filled my mouth as I struggled to swallow it. ¡°Haa¡ It works¡± Luckily, food did the job. Barely. I recovered about 2 HP from that bite. Without pausing, I kept tearing into the food, hungry and desperate not to die. I started to notice something as I got to the third loaf. The amount that was being recovered was lessening. Damn it. It recovered by only about 1 HP now, so I got scared. My HP dropped to 5 and the timer to 2 seconds. 8 HP would be lost if I couldn¡¯t do it. Anxious, I quickly devoured the 5th bread, and the timer dropped to 1 second. To my surprise, the HP didn¡¯t recover anymore. On contrary, I was greeted with a notification.
You¡¯re full!! Eating too much, you have completely filled your satiety meter. Thanks to that, the recovery effect of food has stopped.
And the counter dropped to 0. ¡°What the--¡± I couldn¡¯t even complete the sentence as the familiar text came before my eyes.

YOU DIED!

¡°OH come on!!¡± I wanted to break the capsule as soon as I got kicked out of the game. The hunt was an entire loss as not only did I lose the proficiency I worked so hard to increase, I even lost 5 pieces of bread. That left me with only 4 pieces of bread. And I¡¯d have to consume at least two per day. I could survive for two days at best. I walked down the stairs, disgruntled at the death. It was so dissatisfying and aggravating! I could barely contain the urge to throw a tantrum. Now, I¡¯d have to wait till tonight before I could play again. I glanced at the time as I reached the dining room. It was half past noon, meaning I¡¯d have to play at midnight. Mom and Dad had gone out today to do some shopping, so I was free to do what I wanted. I took some cookies and began munching on them. Good. Sweet things always calm me down. Resigning myself to my fate, I decided to call my friend. I waited for him to pick up as I listened to the dialtone. ¡°Ah! Woojin is it?¡± ¡°Hey there Min-jae..¡± ¡°What¡¯s up mate? You sound down?¡± ¡°Ha...It¡¯s the game¡¡± ¡°Dude! You seriously got Tharos?!¡± Obviously, the only thing that would be called ¡®the game¡¯ nowadays would be Tharos Online. Even Lee Min-jae has been playing it for about 2 months. He¡¯d surely be on a much higher level than me now. ¡°Yeah¡ I started playing two days ago.. And I died twice..¡± There was silence from the other side. ¡°Hello?¡± ¡°..You died twice already?¡± After a while, he spoke up. ¡°Haha¡ Yeah¡± ¡°Here I was excited about finally being able to talk to you about Tharos. And now you died?¡± ¡°I just have a different breed of talent..¡± ¡°Yeah. The worst breed there is. But hey, you never cease to amaze me!¡± I chuckled at his comment. Really speaking to Min-jae was the best way to cheer myself up. ¡°So, where did you start?¡± ¡°Um. Sevillia town in Sevia kingdom¡± ¡°Sevia? Why so far off? It¡¯s in the west right? Why did you start there?¡± ¡°It was one of the recommended spots for my race actually¡± ¡°Hm? What¡¯s your race?¡± ¡°Nephilim¡± I could hear someone spitting and coughing on the other side of the line. Violently. Did something happen? I waited for a while, waiting for Min-jae to respond. ¡°...Hello?¡± ¡°Ah hey. What happened? I heard some coughing¡.¡± ¡°What race did you say you picked again? I¡¯m sure I heard it wrong¡± ¡°The Nephilim¡± ¡°The Nephilim? You serious?!¡± ¡°Yeah. What¡¯s wrong?¡± ¡°Why did you pick a half breed race? And Nephilim at that?! Don¡¯t you know Woojin? The half breeds have real difficulty getting quests since they¡¯re outcasts! You won¡¯t even get quests, and there won¡¯t be ¡®home¡¯ places for you! And the Nephilim has it the worst! They¡¯re only good for close combat, and pure close combat is nothing in the game! Even if people chose close combat, they would pick something like magic warrior or something! Seriously Woojin, did you even read about the races?!¡± ¡°Huh? There was a post for races? I just checked out the player news.¡± Silence on the other side again. Haha, I might have screwed up a little bit. ¡°Fine¡ Let¡¯s meet up in the game someday. Mom¡¯s calling me, so I got to go. Tell me when you get Tallius kingdom¡± ¡°Oh, ok¡± I hung up the phone, and then went to watch some TV. Hm¡ It might be boring without the game I guess. And Dad won¡¯t hesitate to take the capsule away if my grades dropped. ¡°Sigh¡ it¡¯s so hard being a kid¡¡± I flicked between channels before falling asleep on the couch. After all, I¡¯d have a long night tonight. Nexus here! I kinda really enjoyed killing him AFTER he thought he survived I''m so evil! MWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA~!!!! Hope you enjoyed it! Thx for reading! :D :D :D [th_084_.gif] Chapter 6: A Chubby Angel I logged in to Tharos an hour after midnight, fully rested. I fell asleep watching the TV, and so I definitely won¡¯t feel sleepy at night. Wait, do I even feel sleepy in game? My lifestyle was slowly becoming nocturnal. The sight of the cathedral greeted me again as I logged in. This was the default space for respawns as long as I was in the area. The game selected the nearest safe zone as a respawn point. But if you went to a town and then left for an adventure somewhere far off, dying would make you respawn at the same town. Immediately after logging in, I checked my skill proficiency. 4% in [Sharp eyes] and 1% in [Knife Mastery]. I couldn¡¯t help but sigh at those numbers. After all, I had to fight a lot to get the proficiency to at least this much. I wonder if I¡¯d be able to get at least Intermediate in the skills. The ball that I had fought before death was apparently in the Berserk state. Because of that, it gained an aggressive characteristic and got a stat bonus. A huge stat bonus. But the disadvantage of Berserk was that after it wore off, the user would be in a severely powered down state. A Berserker class fought using that, and Berserk was their forte. But once they got into battle, they would be in a compulsory Berserk state. I did some more research on the conditions due to which monsters go berserk. Apparently, sneak attacks had a 25% chance on doing it. Some of the boss monsters went berserk when their HP got to a certain point. And they¡¯d continue to be in the state until they die. Even if you abandon battle and escape. Or, if they recover a certain amount of health they¡¯ll lose the berserk state. An enemy won¡¯t use Berserk twice in a row. It had a certain cool down time. Today, I decided to do some quests like the delivery quest for Old lady Jennings. I was worried about the fact that Nephilim rarely get quests., but apparently the fact that you¡¯re Nephilim won¡¯t be obvious until you get to a higher level. As the level gets higher, the faint marking on my skin would darken, and my appearance would change- A lot. Until then, I¡¯d just be a pale faced freak. But there was another thing that surprised me. My XP. ¡°It dropped by 20%?!?!?¡± I couldn¡¯t help but exclaim as I saw it. People turned to look at me, and the newbies who stood around were gazing at me like I was crazy. But some of them had understanding looks on their faces. A whole 20%?! That was barbaric! It took me a while to get to 70%, and now it dropped back to 50%! No one told me about the XP drop on death! I immediately pulled up the Friends screen and typed in Dynamix. Min-jae¡¯s character name. He had texted me later about the Friends search system. I waited for about a second before the name Dynamix came under the result. I immediately sent a friend request to him. But it would take a while for him to get it anyways. It was midnight after all.
Dynamix accepted your friend request!
To my surprise, the notification not even a minute after I sent it. He was playing right now. The next second, another notification popped up.
Dynamix wants to whisper to you. Accept?
YesNo
Whisper? What¡¯s that? I pressed Yes, uncertain.
Dynamix : 00:01
Hm? Something like a call huh? ¡°Yo, Nexus!¡± ¡°Just call me Woojin, Min-jae¡±. ¡°No! That defeats the purpose of VR. Here, I¡¯m Dynamix, and you¡¯re Nexus! Also, you¡¯re speaking aren¡¯t you?¡± ¡°Huh? Of course I am. How else would I¡ª¡° ¡°Of course you didn¡¯t know! You only check the Hall of fame after all. Listen, Whisper is used to speak¡ with our minds! Oooo!¡± ¡°Speak with my mind?! That¡¯s crazy!¡± ¡°I know right? It¡¯s sick mate! Just try it.¡± Apprehensive, I tried it out. I thought what I wanted to say. ¡°Yup. I can hear you¡± ¡°Holy cow! It works!¡± ¡°Ah there was a time in which I was surprised by this too. How times pass¡± ¡°Yes Yes Old man¡± ¡°Hehe. So, what¡¯s up mate? I¡¯m doing a real important quest here, and since my party¡¯s taking a break, I decided to call you since you so graciously requested me to be your friend. Man, you must be desperate.¡± ¡°Shut it. Well it¡¯s this, I lost XP when I died!¡± ¡°Hm? Yeah, so?¡± ¡°Why are you so nonchalant about this?! I lost XP man! The guides didn¡¯t say¡ª¡° ¡°You didn¡¯t even read the guide.¡± ¡°But the game said it when I died!¡± ¡°Ah. Yeah, Zedex included that as a real vexing penalty. There were even cases in which people lost their levels. Apparently, it was meant to surprise people.¡± ¡°Some surprise it is.¡± I said darkly. ¡°Yeah right. There were several complaints about that on the internet, but no one really cared in the end. After all, the game is amazing!¡± We said that in unison, and it was obvious. It was unthinkable to say that this game was boring. There were no words to describe it. No wonder the release took so long. The beta test was a big failure, so everyone where apprehensive about it. There wasn¡¯t any news about it for about an year, and then the finished version came out. It blew every critic¡¯s and beta tester¡¯s minds. ¡°Anyways, what equips are you using?¡± ¡°Hm.. The beginner¡¯s equipment of course.¡± ¡°Say what?! Dude, get some weapons. Some actual weapons. Do some errand quests and get some money. At least 3 silvers for an iron sword I think. Buy that and then do some hunting. Jeez, how do you not know this?!¡± ¡°Huh. I could do that?¡± ¡°Of course you ca¡ª¡° The line got silent, and I waited for him to return. The timer was still running, so he¡¯d get back eventually. ¡°Yeah mate, I gotta go. We¡¯re gonna continue the quest now. And. Get. Some. Weapons.¡± ¡°Yes mommy!¡± Laughing, he cut the line. The timer froze, and then another window opened. The timer along with Dynamix¡¯s name went on there. A small ¡®play¡¯ button popped up on it. ¡°Recordings huh. Useful.¡± Now then, time to do some quests! I set off, with absolutely no idea how to do a quest. But I did have some experience with RPG¡¯s like this, so I decided to talk with some strangers. ¡°But first, this¡± I scooped up some dirt and rubbed it over me. On my hands, covering the marks with all of it. I also rubbed some of it on my face. Alright. Disguise complete.
Incognito mode! As a Nephilim, you are extremely conspicuous in public due to your appearance. Since a Nephilim is an outcast, they had to adopt such methods to get some jobs and earn their living. ¡¤ Lesser chances of being discovered as Nephilim ¡¤ Higher chances for getting quests
Yup. Just like the forum said it. I had checked the forum yesterday, and it gave this nifty little tip for lower level Nephilim. There were three known methods for higher levels. One, to get some disguises. Two, to get some serious fame so that people won¡¯t hesitate to give you quests. Three, to work up some serious infamy so that people wouldn¡¯t deny you the quest if you asked them nicely. Obviously I¡¯m gonna go for the high fame one. Working up infamy is easy, but the consequences could get me killed. And I already get killed easily enough as it is. I wandered through the streets of Sevia, intending to find some nice quests. ¡°Oi little otherworlder! Can you do me a favour?¡± I turned to the familiar call, happy. But to my disappointment, it was some other user. He grinned at me as he passed by. Damn you! I watched as the copper haired NPC gave that user a quest. I almost wanted to cry as I saw it. It was this easy to get a quest? The NPC noticed me as he turned around. His eyes widened, and then were filled with anger. ¡°You filth! Get out of our city!¡± I ran away before he picked up the rock. Wasn¡¯t this city supposed to be not very hostile to me? Damn, the game gave way too many advantages to the pure breed races. I counted the amount of money I had. 1 silver and 5 coppers. I lost 5 of them when I died the second time. And I was low on bread. Deciding my path, I went to the shop. After asking around some, I found the shop. Surprisingly, the people I spoke to didn¡¯t seem that bothered by me. Maybe that guy who gave the quest was special? It might be that he has some ability. I kept using [Sharp Eyes] and finally got the proficiency to 6%. This time, I won¡¯t lose it. Nope! Death shall not have its grasp on me anymore! This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there. I entered the shop, a bell ringing as I pushed on the door. A ginger haired man raised his head as I walked in, his chubby cheeks shaking slightly. ¡°Boy, where you diving in the desert or something?¡± he said wryly, running his eyes over my dirt covered hands. I immediately cut to the chase, since there¡¯s a chance that he¡¯d find out that I¡¯m a Nephilim if I stayed for too long. ¡° I need ten pieces of bread. How much is it?¡± He seemed a bit shocked at my abrupt request, but quickly regained composure. I could faintly hear him mumbling about ¡®not asking too many questions¡¯. I couldn¡¯t help but smile at that. ¡°It¡¯ll be 2 coppers kid.¡± So cheap?! I quickly opened the Help and checked the currency. A 100 coppers is a silver. That means I could buy almost 500 bread loaves! I¡¯d never have to starve! Then I remembered that it¡¯d only get more expensive, with me needing to buy equipment, manage it and other consumables that I¡¯d need. I need money. I tossed 2 coppers at him. He caught it, and looked at me with disapproval. Sorry, but I can¡¯t get too close. But being the professional he is, he tossed the bread at me, sighing. I fidgeted a bit while I stood there, unsure of whether to ask him. Getting chased out wouldn¡¯t be good for me mentally. ¡°Um, do you have... any jobs you need done?¡± His eyes widened, and then he chuckled. He thought for a while and then asked ¡°Can you bring some stuff for me?¡± I nodded eagerly and he looked me over once more. ¡°I need you to buy some flour from the Baker and then bring it back to me. Can you do it?¡±

He nodded happily and then went back to writing something under the desk. I left the store, happy that I got the quest. I need to quickly finish quests, get some money, and then buy some good weapons. And then I¡¯ll go and kill those balls. Level ups, here I come!
QUEST COMPLETE
By collecting the Ripsin herbs and delivering them to the herbalist, you have ensured that the shopkeeper Mapar gets a steady supply of potions.
Yeah! Finally, I got 5 silvers! I had to do about 4 delivery quests, 3 purchase quests, and 6 monster killing quests. Some of the quests that the herbalist¡¯s gave involved killing the green balls and bringing their parts, so I occasionally had to kill some of them. The experience was much needed, so I gladly did it. Thanks to it, I successfully reached level 2. And a bit more, thanks to the quests that I did. I was a step away from level 3. But it took me a whole day to finish it. So my pace was much slower. I stared lovingly at the shiny coins in my hand. It¡¯s too much of a shame that I¡¯d lose them soon enough. But it¡¯s okay. Thanks to the extensive number of quests I did for the baker, the shopkeeper and the herbalist gave me some pretty sweet discounts from all of them. I could sell stuff to the herbalist for a price 2% higher than the market price, and she¡¯d sell it to me for a 5% discount. ¡°Say boy.¡± The shopkeeper Mapar said. He was the one who started this rapid quest round. If it hadn¡¯t been for him... ¡°I heard some interesting stuff the other day. That.. you¡¯re a Nephilm. Is that true?¡± Mapar questioned, his eyes locking on to my face. Lying would be bad here. I took a deep breath, and told him the truth ¡°Yes sir. I¡¯m in fact a Nephilim. I¡¯m sorry I didn¡¯t tell you before¡± Mapar stared at me for quite a while, and then to my surprise, burst out laughing.¡±Gyahahahahahaha! You¡¯re quite the child! I just guessed it, and you confessed? You really need to be a better liar child.¡± I nervously laughed, quite bewildered by his reaction. That wasn¡¯t so ba¡ª ¡°That said, Get out of my shop you filth¡± he grunted, venomous hate in his eyes. --d. Huh. Guess I was wrong. I was just about to turn and leave when- ¡°That¡¯s how you lie m¡¯boy! I¡¯ll tell you the truth. I was quite angry that you lied to me. But you know, you were really helpful to me, so I didn¡¯t feel so angry any more. Don¡¯t worry m¡¯boy. I won¡¯t forsake you now.¡± I just couldn¡¯t express my gratitude to this person! He was just like an angel! A fat, chubby one, but still an angel! ¡°I told Yonbe and Kiosa about it, and they didn¡¯t mind it too. In fact, we all pitched in and bought you this, since you were so helpful. Here you go kid. Take it as thanks for all the time you helped me.¡± I received the clothing he was holding out.

Whoa! Sweet! A 50% increase in stealth AND a 40% increase in Friendliness! Yay! ¡°You know what to do with the mask and the hood. Use them bandages to cover up your arm boy. Just come to me if you need more. I¡¯ll sell them for a discount¡± He winked, saying that.¡°Of course, you¡¯ll have to pay me for that stuff. A trader never likes to lose much¡± ¡°I was planning to! How much?¡± ¡°It cost us about 5 silvers...¡± he trailed off. My heart fell at that. ¡° But since it¡¯s supposed to be a gift, You can pay for it later. Consider it a loan.¡± He said. My happiness was through the roof! I even thought of giving him an extra 5, but remembering my financial state, I refrained from it. I immediately equipped the hood and the mask. The mask looked like that of a fox, with slanting eyes on its face and a couple red lines on it. I then took the linen bandages and tied them around my arms.
INCOGNITO MODE! With your perfect disguise, people would be hard pressed to recognise you as Nephilim ¡¤ Friendliness with NPC¡¯s +50% ¡¤ Guard¡¯s suspicion +20% WARNING: Adults would be suspicious of you at first Depending on your further behaviour, friendliness may rise OR fall.
Huh. Obviously, guards would get suspicious about a hooded masked man. An extra 10% friendliness? Must be because of the bandages. I thanked Mapar, and he waved cheerfully at me. I left the shop, feeling reborn. ¡°Mommy, there¡¯s a funny looking person!¡± ¡°Don¡¯t look at him Johnny. Just keep walking¡± Haha~.... Well, at least it¡¯s better than being called filth. I looked towards the boy and the mom. The boy smiled at me as I looked at him. I raised my hand towards him, and he did the same. Woah... If I didn¡¯t know this was a game, I¡¯d have believed that that kid was as genuine as the ones in the real world. ¡°Hell, for all I know, the ones in the real world are also simulations.¡± 5 silvers. This is my fortune now. First, some weapons! ¡°To the Weapon¡¯s shop!¡± YES!! FINALLY DONE!! The tables were sooooo troublesome. I had to recheck it again and again and again and again. Only to find that there''s another mistake. In the end I just changed the entire thing... Enjoy~! Chapter 7: The Herbalists shop On the way to the armoury, I checked my status.

I got some upgrades to Health and Stamina. Also in Strength, Agility and Intelligence. I thought it had something to do with the fights, since even Piercing resistance went up. So level ups increased my stats based on my actions. Since I fought a lot and exhausted my stamina, my stamina regen and stamina went up. From my first level up, my character build was already becoming unique. Like in Mapar¡¯s shop, a bell jingled as I walked in. ¡°Welcome, welcome! What might you be needing today?¡± The swordmaster greeted me cheerfully. His bald head shone brightly from the sun¡¯s rays, but his most striking feature was the scar that ran down his face. From above his brow, curling around his eye and ending at his chin. Looked like someone drew on him. ¡°I need a sword¡± my voice was a bit muffled as it came through the mask ¡°Of about 3 silvers¡± ¡°Sure thing!¡± He then went in to a back room, leaving me alone in the shop. Bored, I looked around the shop. It was filled with swords of all shapes and sizes. Greatswords, bastard swords, katanas. All of them adorned the shelves behind the counter, or in glass cases in front of it. I marvelled at the steel as I waited for the old man to come back. ¡°Woah... Dual swords...¡± I couldn¡¯t help but gaze in wonder at the pair of swords in the top of the case. It was sleek like a katana, but tempered like a scimitar. A curious curve. It¡¯s hilt was wrapped with some green wire. ¡°Cool... Me want...¡± ¡°Do you like them, lad?¡± The blademaster¡¯s voice startled me and I turned back, a bit surprised. In his hands were three swords and the smile was still plastered on his face. ¡°No... Not particularly¡± ¡°No need to lie lad! I know someone who likes a sword when I see one. Even if that someone wears a mask¡± He laid the swords on the table and pushed them towards me. I stepped closer, and then he began explaining them. ¡°This is the more commonly bought Iron sword. This one¡¯s the needle. And this one¡¯s a bit more expensive than your budget... by about a silver. A Orihal sword. It¡¯s a bit troublesome to use.¡± ¡°Show me the Iron sword.¡± After all, troublesome to use is troublesome. Maybe I¡¯ll get it when I¡¯m richer. I took the sword from him, ignoring the thin needle and the pencil like Orihal sword. Definitely not buying that. Hm... Not bad. ¡°Alright. I¡¯ll take it.¡± The sword master looked at me disapprovingly. ¡°That¡¯s it? That¡¯s all you¡¯re gonna check about a sword?¡± Huh? What? What else is there to see? I got a bit puzzled as the man kept looking at me, expecting me to do something. I awkwardly stood there, sword in hand. Sighing, I decided to ask him. ¡°I¡¯m not experienced with swords. So I really don¡¯t know what to look for.¡± The disapproval in the man¡¯s face seemed to dissipate a bit. ¡°Oh is that so. Swords must be rare for you otherworlders then.¡± I shrugged. ¡°It¡¯s the first I¡¯ve used a knife, much less a sword.¡± Suddenly, my instincts flared. Could this possibly be a secret class or skill or sub skill? Maybe so. I decided to test it. ¡°I¡¯m far too inexperienced with such things. Could you teach me?¡± I asked him, as humbly as I could. ¡°Of course! You see, the first thing you should check is for the nicks and scratches in the blade. After all, they might reduce the.....¡± the sword master kept talking, droning on and on about weapons and how to check their quality. Finally, after quite a while, he stopped. He let out a huge breath, and then smiled at me. ¡°Got it?¡± DING!
Iron Sword
Damage:5-7Durability:20 / 20

A sword made of iron. It is very sturdy, and quite sharp. Damage dealt will decrease without proper caring.
NEW SKILL OBTAINED! Weapon Insight: By gaining extensive knowledge about the objects of battles and violence, you have gained an insight about weapons and the way they work. ¡¤ Novice: Able to identify the faults in a weapon
Oh great. A trash skill. A boring lecture and all I got was a skill that won¡¯t be of any use to me. Combining it with some Repair skills might help me out, but I had no idea how to get that. Well, at least these types of skills don¡¯t have a maximum limit. I could learn all the skills I wanted now. But once I obtained a class, restrictions would be imposed and some skills would be removed. I sighed and placed 3 silvers on the table. The sword master smiled cheerfully as he handed them over to me. ¡°Take good care of it!¡± I left the shop, feeling a bit disgruntled. My brand new Iron sword hung at my waist. I slapped my cheeks in an attempt to clear my mind. Yes! Only part one of my mission was completed. ¡°It looks quite good on you lad!¡± the armourer said, looking me over. ¡°Thanks.¡± I left the armourer¡¯s place, my money bag now considerably lighter-metaphorically. I only had about 50 coppers left. I had to buy an iron sword, a leather breastplate and just one beginner¡¯s potion. The beginner¡¯s potion cost 50 coppers. Counting the 1 silver the breastplate alone cost, I only had 50 coppers remaining. And soon I¡¯d be losing even that too, what with the maintenance costs and stuff. Sigh, maybe this game was made to make people understand the need for money management? Perhaps. I headed out to the fields, ready to bring down some of the balls. Today, I¡¯ll go for a rapid level up. A thorough grinding. I had a lot of catching up to do after all. I headed out onto the lush green fields, slowly drawing my sword out as I did so. I really can¡¯t wait to get to a higher level and start exploring. Tharos is a huge place. And I want to see as much of it as I can. I rushed at the first ball I found, brandishing my sword as I did so. The ball wasn¡¯t so surprised as it had already seen me. It rolled and the shot towards me. The AI assist had already kicked in, so I was in the best state I could be in. I ducked, feeling its spikes graze my back as I narrowly missed it. It shaved off a bit of my HP, but that was no matter. Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation. Right now, I was itching to try out the sword. I swung at the ball as soon as it landed, the back of its body exposed. The sword cut through the air smoothly, and it made a satisfying squelch as it cut through the jelly like body of the ball. The reach of the sword was quite huge, so it dealt some major damage to the ball. The blood- green goo- flew out, and it yelled in frustration. I didn¡¯t stop there, as I twisted the blade in my hands and raised it above my head. Like an executioner, I brought it down on it. Definitely a critical hit. The ball exploded as the sword cleaved through it, giving me some pretty sweet HP. ¡°Alright! On to the next one!¡± I brushed my blood off from the leather breastplate. It was my precious after all. I had killed quite a number of them balls, and successfully got my level to 5. I didn¡¯t encounter any berserk balls too, so that¡¯s a good thing. Also, Dynamix told me that I could salvage items from the dead bodies of monsters. So, I tried prying off the spikes from the balls. Thankfully, it worked. I collected quite a few of them, so I decided to sell them all to the herbalist. Profit~! Right now I got about a 100 spikes, by diligently picking up what was left behind. Apparently, minor beasts like the ones here would just explode and leave behind some spikes. After leaving the beginner¡¯s area, the monster carcasses would stay there. With the spikes I would get about 4 coppers each, netting me a price of about 400 coppers. That¡¯s 4 silvers! I could buy even more armor with that! But soon enough, silvers wouldn¡¯t suffice. Gold would be what matters. God, I can¡¯t wait to get to a high level. Maybe join Unity? I always wanted to become a high levelled player in a guild. Respected and feared. With level 5, my stats improved considerably. My [Sword Mastery] went up to 8%, and [Knife Mastery] stayed at 0%. ¡°Maybe I should check out that skill I got?¡± I stared at the sword and spoke the magic words. ¡°Weapon Inspection!¡± A wave of sorts boomed out from me, and the sword¡¯s appearance changed drastically. Some lines appeared on it, making it look like a cyber object. The lines crisscrossed throughout the surface of the blade, and the dark grey colour of the sword changed to a dark blue, with the lines glowing white. Then, some red marks began appearing on the sword, highlighting the nicks on the blade. ¡°That¡¯s a lot...¡± The surface was coated with numerous scratches, presumably due to the spikes of the balls. For once, I noticed a major flaw. Most of the scratches were on the flat of the blade. Even the nicks and gouges were pretty clear. I realised that most of my attacks hit monsters partly with the flat side, annulling some of the damage. I thought that there were some special conditions for me to achieve full damage, but to think it was this. In the end, the game did give a bit of an edge to people with actual experience. ¡°Ah forget it. I got to level 5!¡± I need to get back to the town now, and sell the thorns and stuff to the herbalist. After that, I would be done for the day. Mom did say that we¡¯re going to eat outside tonight. To my surprise, I suddenly yawned. It was a weird feeling. My body felt completely vigorous and active, but slowly, my head felt quite drowsy. Well, seems like the nocturnal lifestyle hasn¡¯t been completely mastered by me. Stifling another yawn, I sheathed my Iron sword again and headed back to town. I kept watching the other newbies fight as I did so. It was quite hard to push open the thick door of the herbalist¡¯s shop. What with all the plants near the entrance, the vines had coiled around the door, hindering it from opening smoothly. The moment I stepped in, a familiar voice greeted me. ¡°Oh? Is it Nexus? The mask does look good on you! Just like I told em¡± The lady wearing the pointed green hat greeted me as I walked in. Her gray hair covered her cheeks with their curls, her messy hairstyle making her look like a cave woman. She wore a dark green outfit of sorts, matching the colours of her store. The walls of the herbalist¡¯s shop was covered completely with thick vines and leaves, making it seem like a small jungle. An extremely compact jungle, to be exact. Complete with a cave woman. ¡°Hello Mrs Kiosa! I came by to sell some of the stuff you wanted!¡± I took out the bundles of thorns from my inventory and placed them on the counter, among the various other leaves that covered it. She¡¯s really a plant enthusiast. She hobbled closer and looked at the thorns with great scrutiny. Then, her expression brightened as she looked at me. ¡°Good work Nexus! This is a good batch. So you wanna sell it?¡± she questioned me, her hands turning the thorn around in them. ¡°Yep. Gimme what you can Mrs Kiosa¡± I said. After all, she would give me a price higher than that of the normal market price. ¡°Hm? 112 thorns huh. I¡¯ll buy them all for about 440 coppers. Fine with you?¡± she asked me. ¡°Sure!¡± I completed the transaction and pocketed the money. The other NPCs might buy it for 400 coppers or so. Only in that regard, I chose to sell it here. After all, money is money! I bid farewell to her as I walked out, happy with the extra money. I opened the menu and pressed the ¡®Log Out¡¯ option, yawning as I did so. Today was quite tiring. But still, I managed to get to Level 5! Right now, I¡¯d just go to sleep... Without a care in the world, I immediately jumped onto the bed and fell deep asleep. Was quite sleepy when I typed this, so I might have glossed over a few things. Thx for reading! Hopefully there are no table troubles.
