Chapter 1 – Welcome to Screamgate
Chapter 1¨CWelcome to Screamgate
¡°Hey, in which class are you placed?¡±
¡°I don¡¯t know. I just arrived here.¡±
¡°Hurry up, search your name and your classroom in the notice board!¡±
¡°Right, right. Hey, don¡¯t push me! I can walk by myself!¡±
In the front of a big building, a big group of children gathered around a massive board.
Happy and excited expressions could be seen from all of their faces.
All of them were fighting with each other to search their own name in the bulletin board.
They couldn¡¯t wait to know in which class they will be placed this year.
¡°I¡¯m placed in the battle class 2-3.¡±
¡°Hey, get out if you have found your name. It¡¯s very crowded here.¡±
¡°Huh? Why am I placed in the support class? I thought I registered as a battle class!¡±
¡°Please make way! I can¡¯t see my name from back here!¡±
¡°Yeah! We are placed in the same class!¡±
¡°Kyaaa!!! Who grope my butt!¡±
Lot of excitement could be heard from the area.
This big building was actually a school to prepare young adventurer the basic knowledge before they exploring the wilderness.
The school taught many things from weapon wielding to basic magic skills.
From herbal medicine to monster common weakness.
Screamgate adventurer school, it¡¯s the school name.
Screamgate was not considered a famous school in the empire.
But it was the best school you can attend in the outskirt, especially in this remote rural area.
Not far away from the excited group of kids, another group of kids sat under the trees.Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.
They watched the first group quietly.
Some adults could be seen sitting with them.
A few kids even holding hand with the adult.
¡°Hey don¡¯t you think they are too excited ?¡±
¡°I¡¯m scared. I heard this school is really harsh toward the new students.¡±
¡°Don¡¯t worry. It¡¯s my first year too.¡±
¡°I want to see in which class will I attend. But I am afraid they will hit me if I walk near them.¡±
¡°All kids older than you looks scary, right?¡±
¡°Right.¡±
¡°Let¡¯s wait until the crowd dispersed a little.¡±
The new kids group which sitting under the trees were new students that just enroll this year.
Screamgate adopted the education system that divide the study material into 4 grades.
Each grade lasted for one year.
That meant all of the student needed to attend the school for four years before they are graduated.
Different from the first kids group, these kids make an anxious face, some of them even crying.
¡°Mom..., sob... sob... I don¡¯t want to go to school.¡±
¡°Dear, don¡¯t you want to be smart and get a nice job in the capital?¡±
¡°But I don¡¯t wanna live here. Sob... I want to go home with you.¡±
Screamgate is considered as a dormitory school.
The students needed to live here if they want to study.
Even if their home was nearby, they still needed to live in the dormitory with the other students.
The mother looked at her crying daughter with worry.
Her daughter just reached 12 years old like the other children that enrolled school this year.
¡°Uhmm. My dear, don¡¯t cry. Don¡¯t you see that all of your friends here don¡¯t cry?¡±
¡°But... but...¡±
¡°You could have a lot of friend here. I¡¯m sure you¡¯ll be happy.¡±
¡°I have friends too at home.¡±
¡°How about this? When you go home at holiday, we will hold a party.¡±
¡°A party?¡±
¡°Right. I will cook all of your favourite food for you.¡±
¡°All of them?¡±
¡°Yeah. If you study dilligently here.¡±
¡°Ugh...¡±¡¯
¡°I will write letter for you! Everyday!¡±
¡°Everyday?¡±
¡°Everyday! So you won¡¯t feel lonely.¡±
¡°I will write too!¡±
¡°So, it¡¯s a promise?¡±
¡°A promise!¡±
The mother smiled at her daughter.
Eventhough her daughter face is still red like an apple, her eyes were no longer crying.
Then the mother turned her eyes toward the notice board.
The crowded group of kids gathering at the notice board were slowly dispersing.
¡°Look, it¡¯s not crowded anymore. Let¡¯s search your new class on the list!¡±
¡°Ugh...¡±
¡°Um, how about search your name with a new friend?¡±
The mother turn her head left and right to seek new student to become her daughter friend.
Then she fixed her head toward one boy sitting near the pond.
The mother held her daughter hand and walked toward the boy.
¡°Excuse me?¡±
¡°... Yea?¡±
¡°Are you studying at Screamgate School too?¡±
¡°... I am.¡±
¡°Oh... What a coincidence. My daughter here starts her school too this year.¡±
¡°A new student?¡±
¡°Right! Anna, introduce yourself to your new friend. Remember how we train at home?¡±
The girl hesistatingly speak from behind her mother.
¡°My name is Anastasia Vasiliev. I¡¯m twelve years old. Nice to meet you.¡±
¡°My name is Kevin Vanfent. I¡¯m turning thirteen this year. You could call me Kevin¡±
¡°What¡¯s a coincidence again. My daughter is turning thirteen too this year. Anna, now you can search your class with your new friend!¡±
¡°You can at least accompany me searching the class, right?¡±
¡°Dear, now you have a new friend. You could ask him to help you.¡±
¡°I don¡¯t wanna. I¡¯m too embarassed.¡±
Anna tightened her grip on her mother clothes.
She was too scared to enter the school area without her mother.
Her mother didn¡¯t know too what to do in order to calm Anna.
Kevin who watched the scene opened his mouth.
¡°Let¡¯s search for your name together. After that I¡¯ll accompany you to find your classroom.¡±
¡°See Anna? Your new friend here wants to help you. I will wait here too for you.¡±
¡°You will wait?¡±
¡°I¡¯ll wave my hand for you so you will know that I¡¯m here.¡±
¡°Really? OK. I¡¯ll go with Kevin.¡±
¡°Well then. Please excuse us, mam.¡±
After Anna said her goodbye, Anna and Kevin walked together to enter the school area.
The mother smiled at the children and pray for their success.
Chapter 2 – I am Your Senior
Chapter 2¨CI am Your Senior
¡°Ugh. I can¡¯t find my name. There¡¯s too much letter here.¡±
¡°Search harder! You are in the first year right? Your name should be on this section.¡±
¡°Really? I¡¯ll try to search again.¡±
¡°Don¡¯t worry, I¡¯ll help you.¡±
Right now, Anna and Kevin were searching their name on the front school board.
Occasionally, Anna would look back to see if her mother was still waiting outside the school ground.
Then Anna would see her mother waved her hand happily at her.
¡°I found my name! It¡¯s on class 1-2 list!¡±
¡°Oh good! Now it¡¯s my turn to search my name.¡±
¡°You haven¡¯t found your name already?¡±
¡°No, I was helping you. My name is on the other section.¡±
¡°Huh?¡±
Kevin walked away from the first year section.
Then he stopped at the other section of the board.
Anna who was curious followed him.
When she read the board, she was surprised.
¡°Eh... This is not the first year section!¡±
¡°No, this is not the first year section.¡±
¡°Then why are you searching here?¡±
¡°Well, because my name should be here, I think?¡±
Anna still didn¡¯t understand why Kevin searched on this section.
But she didn¡¯t ask anymore and helped him searching his name on the list.
After searching for a while, she found a name on the list.
¡°Eh... this kid has the same name as you.¡±
¡°Uh? Which kid?¡±
¡°This one. He is at the third year. But it can¡¯t be you, right?¡±
¡°Where is it?¡±
¡°Here. On the bottom.¡±
Anna pointed her finger at a name on the list.
She found Kevin¡¯s full name on the list, but she didn¡¯t think that it was him.
The name was on the third year support class list.
Kevin looked at the list calmly.
¡°Oh. I see.¡±
¡°Right? This kid has the same name as you.¡±If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
¡°Class 3-5 at support section. That¡¯s unexpected!¡±
¡°Hmm? Even if you said that, you don¡¯t look surprised.¡±
¡°Why should I? It¡¯s my own name.¡±
¡°Huh? But you see? There¡¯s another kid with the same name as you in this school! I want to meet him.¡±
Kevin was a little confused at how¡¯s the conversation going.
Anna observed Kevin¡¯s unkempt appearance.
No matter how long she was observing him, he was just a twelve year old kid like her.
Kevin felt uneasy being stared by a pair of brown eyes.
Then he remembered something.
¡°Uhm... Oh yeah. I never told you. I am your senior in this school.¡±
¡°You... you are what?¡±
¡°I am your senior in this school.¡±
¡°Don¡¯t repeat the same thing! What I mean is why are you not in the same grade as me?¡±
¡°Because I am your senior?¡±
¡°Arrgh!!! I¡¯ll tell my mother!¡±
Anna turned arround.
Then she ran towards her mother outside the school area.
Kevin who was surprised by Anna¡¯s action freezed.
After Kevin watched idly for a few seconds, he started to chase Anna.
Anna ran with all of her might.
Her eyes started watering.
In the middle of her run, suddenly a gust of wind blow Anna from the opposite direction.
Unable to resist it with her little body, she fall backward.
Kevin who was chasing up close with Anna catched her before she fell down.
Then he held her so she couldn¡¯t run away.
¡°Wait, wait. Please don¡¯t tell your mother.¡±
¡°Uwaaa... Release me!¡±
¡°If I release you, you won¡¯t tell your mother?¡±
¡°I¡¯ll tell mom that you are not my friend!¡±
¡°But, but I¡¯m your friend!¡±
¡°If you are my senior then you are not my friend!¡±
¡°Why?¡±
¡°Because we are not in the same grade!¡±
¡°We could be friends too even if our grade is different, you know?¡±
¡°No!!! I heard all upperclassmen is a meanie!¡±
¡°I am not a meanie! Well I know someone who is a meanie. But I won¡¯t bully you.¡±
¡°You are bullying me...¡±
¡°Huh?¡±
¡°You are a bully!!! Uwaaahhhh.... Mooommm!!!¡±
Anna became more hysteric.
Kevin tightened his hold so Anna can¡¯t escape.
Kevin didn¡¯t know what to say.
He is a kid too.
Hearing Anna who cried loudly made him want to cry with her.
The other children on the area watched the scene dumbfoundedly.
Luckily Anna¡¯s mother was so far away so she could not see the whole scene clearly.
She only saw that there¡¯s a kid sitting in the middle of field.
Of course she never thought that the kid was her daughter crying.
A female instructor who was nearby approached.
She didn¡¯t pay attention before.
But after she saw a girl crying, she decided to see what was happening.
Kevin saw the black haired instructor walking toward them.
He shook Anna in a panic.
¡°H... hey... S... stop crying. The instructor is coming.¡±
¡°Waaa... Waaa.... WAAA... MOOMMMYYY!!!¡±
¡°What¡¯s going on? Why a girl is crying here?¡±
¡°M... Miss Adelia, I.. I.. d... don¡¯t know why she is crying.¡±
¡°Ah... You again, Kevin Vanfent. Do you hit the girl?¡±
¡°I don¡¯t hit her. She is suddenly crying by herself. I don¡¯t know.¡±
¡°Don¡¯t lie. Let me see her.¡±
Ms. Adelia examined Anna carefully to see if she was hurt.
After examining for a while, she was glad because she didn¡¯t find any injuries.
Ms. Adelia stroked Anna¡¯s brown hair and tried to calm her.
¡°Hey... Are you okay?¡±
¡°Sob... sob... sniff...¡±
¡°Did he hit you?¡±
¡°Waa... I want my mom...¡±
Hearing Anna¡¯s answer, Ms. Adelia pierced Kevin with her sharp blue eyes.
Ms. Adelia refrained herself to not knock Kevin¡¯s head.
She couldn¡¯t believe Kevin as a senior dared to hit a new student.
Moreover, the new student is a little girl.
As an instructor in the school, She tried to persuade Anna from going home.
Ms. Adelia chose her words carefully and spoke with smile.
¡°You are a new student, right? Let¡¯s go inside the school. Don¡¯t worry, everything¡¯s gonna be okay.¡±
¡°I don¡¯t want to go to school.¡±
¡°Why? School is fun. You will find a lot of friends here.¡±
¡°I don¡¯t want friends. I only want my mom.¡±
¡°Um... Hey... Do you come to school alone?¡±
¡°No, I come here with my mom. That¡¯s my mom.¡±
Anna pointed at her mom outside the school gate.
Ms. Adelia turned her head to watch outside.
She saw a woman waving her hand from afar.
¡°Is that your mother who is waving her hand?¡±
Anna nodded to answer.
¡°Your mom looked happy. She wants you to go to school.¡±
¡°No... I want to go home. I¡¯m scared.¡±
¡°Why are you scared?¡±
¡°I don¡¯t want to be alone... I want my mom.¡±
¡°Hey, you won¡¯t be alone. There¡¯s a lot of kids who will study with you. They will become your friends.¡±
¡°Huu... huu... sob...¡±
¡°Did your mom say anything to you before you entered the school?¡±
¡°My mom told me to study then get a nice job in the capital.¡±
¡°Then let¡¯s study together. I promise you will get fun here.¡±
Anna kept crying.
Ms. Adelia couldn¡¯t calm her.
As a new instructor, she was not experienced in dealing with this kind of situation.
Kevin stood on the side watching in silence.
He didn¡¯t dare to speak anything.
Suddenly a loud sound of bell broke through the scene.
It¡¯s the sign that lessons would begin soon.
Ms. Adelia who watched Anna with worry turn her head toward Kevin.
A trace of discontent could be seen on her face.
¡°KEVIN!!!¡±
¡°Yes!!!¡±
¡°You better go inside the school now.¡±
¡°Eh?!¡±
¡°Do you want to miss your first lesson?¡±
¡°Umm... Ms. Adelia, I don¡¯t want to miss my lessons. But Anna¡¯s mother has asked me to accompany her to her classroom and...¡±
¡°You want to make her cry again?¡±
¡°... No, miss...¡±
¡°Then go to your class now. I¡¯ll take care of her.¡±
Kevin hesistated to leave Anna.
He wanted to bring her to her classroom so he could fulfill his promise with Anna¡¯s mother.
But when Kevin saw Ms. Adelin¡¯s angry face, he gave up his thought.
Kevin turned around unwillingly and ran to enter the school building with uneasy heart.
Chapter 3 – Adventurer with Consience
Chapter 3¨CAdventurer with Consience
¡°Ahaha... We are on the same class again.¡±
¡°How¡¯s your holiday?¡±
¡°Dude, your parents must ¡®enjoy¡¯ reading your terrific report.¡±
¡°Argh! Why should I be here? The neighbour class has better girls.¡±
¡°Hey! Who said that this class has ugly girls? Say that again!¡±
The whole class was full with noisy chattering.
Walls can not surpress the atmosphere of excitement from inside the classroom.
All of the students talked with each other.
Some were laughing, bragging about their holiday.
Some were sad, weeping about their parents anger for bad report.
Should I enter now? ¨C Kevin said inside his heart.
He was standing at the closed door, reluctant to enter the classroom.
Kevin braced his heart and breathed deeply.
He gripped the door handle.
Then he slowly opened the door.
Kevin dragged his legs and entered the classroom.
The whole class were looking at him.
The noise were gone as if it was swallowed by the void.
Ughh... I am stupid. It will be better if I wait and enter with the instructor.
Kevin sighed.
He casted down his eyes and walked to the back of classroom.
Then he sat on an empty seat which is the furthest from the blackboard.
Whispering could be heard on the air.
¡°Hey, do you know what happened this morning?¡±
¡°What do you mean?¡±
¡°You don¡¯t know? Kevin hit a girl.¡±
¡°Hmm. His body is small, but he has big guts. So they are dating now?¡±
¡°Not that ¡®hit¡¯! I heard he wrestled with the girl at the school yard.¡±A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
¡°Woah! He dared to wrestle in the front of people? Is the girl pregnant?¡±
¡°What the crap is inside your perverted head! The girl was crying!¡±
¡°I saw the scene too! He chased the girl and then molested her.¡±
¡°Yeah. The girl is so small. I never see her before. Maybe she is a new student.¡±
¡°He¡¯s so mean!¡±
The whispering slowly turned into a public discussion.
The atmosphere was just like before Kevin entered the class.
Everybody were chatting leisurely.
Not only that, some kids were even exagerating the news.
They forgot that the main culprit was still behind them.
Kevin closed his ears and lowered his head.
He hate hearing any rumour about him.
Kevin tried to hold his anger.
He didn¡¯t want to snap and cause more trouble.
But the kids didn¡¯t stop talking.
Kevin wanted to yell and told his classmates to stop.
Unable to hold his anger anymore, Kevin stood.
He gritted his teeth.
Kevin prepared his breath to shout.
Luckily, before he could make any sound, an instructor entered the classroom.
Once the instructor closed the door, he shout.
¡°Students, close your mouths or stand outside for eternity.¡±
The whole classroom became quiet again.
Then the instructor scanned the classroom.
He focused his sight on Kevin.
¡°Mr. Vanfent, it seems that you have prepared yourself to stand outside. You are too smart to attend the lecture, aren¡¯t you?¡±
Kevin didn¡¯t answer and sit down immediately.
¡°Hmph... I¡¯ll let you go since this is the first time we meet after a long holiday.¡±
The instructor walked to instructor seat and sit.
Sunlight from window touched his blonde hair.
The instructor snorted and closed the curtain roughly.
After that he read a list on top of the table.
¡°Let¡¯s start with confirming the attendance. Allan Horak...¡±
¡°Here¡±
¡°Bernhard Isaksen¡±
¡°Here¡±
...
¡°And the last. Tommy Mourits¡±
¡°Here¡±
¡°Good. Then I¡¯ll continue with the introduction. I¡¯m sure that some of you have known my name. Who wants to introduce me for a special remark?¡±
No one were brave enough to raise his/her hand.
¡°So there are no volunteers? What a shame.¡±
The instructor raised from his seat and approached the blackboard.
He wrote something.
HENDRICK MAURENN
EMPIRE ETHICS
¡°Ok, that¡¯s the end of the introduction section. I would like to start the lessons immediately, but there¡¯s a special rule about introduction week so I would refrain to do so.¡±
Mr. Hendrick put his right hand inside his vest.
He took out a piece of paper.
¡°This is your lessons schedules for this year. You are free to copy it if you think it is important.¡±
Mr. Hendrick gave it to a student in the front seat.
The student given the paper scanned it before he passed it to his friend.
¡°Before I leave, I¡¯ll give you two news, a good one and a bad one.¡±
The whole class listened attentively.
¡°The bad one is, during the first year introduction week, there will be no lessons for you¡±
The students smirked.
Some were even planning how to spend the free week.
They glanced at each other expressing their happiness.
¡°The good one is, your lessons will be replaced as tasks. You need to submit a summary ¡®why I need to learn this subject¡¯ for each subjects on your yearly schedule.¡±
Hearing the last news, the smirking faces were dissappeared.
The students wanted to protest, but they were afraid to do so.
Mr. Hendrick ignored the class response and continued speaking
¡°The due date is next week. Don¡¯t miss any single subject.¡±
After delivered the news, Mr Hendrick ended his speak.
¡°Then, that¡¯s all. Class dismissed.¡±
The stern instructor walked approaching the door.
As his left hand reached the door handle, he remembered something.
Mr. Hendrick turned his body toward the students direction again.
¡°I am pretty sure that you have known the school¡¯s rule about violence. The headmaster has forbidden any activity that possibly inflict any kind of unnecesary damage.¡±
Mr. Hendrick stopped speaking and observed the students.
He watched the students reaction one by one.
¡°I know that we are an adventurer school that mainly teaches about fighting and destroying, but we must remember that we are still humans with reasons.¡±
¡°The school doesn¡¯t want you to be an unruly person who trample the other.¡±
¡°Screamgate wants you not only become a strong adventurer, but also a human with consience.¡±
¡°Think twice, before you speak or do something. Please consider your action a little bit more, since you are already in the third grade.¡±
Mr. Hendrick ended his speech and exited the classroom.
