-May 10th 2106 ¡°¡­ The much anticipated release of VRMMORPG game Scattered Islands Online is only 7 days away, people are gearing up to camp outside of stores selling their first batch of consoles.¡± Increasing the volume on his TV, Duke was busy unpacking his belongings while listening to current news. Just 4 hours ago Duke had arrived at his new home in Palo Alto. Duke was a 6 feet 1 inch tall, light skinned, black haired 24 years old adult with green eyes. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania, Duke was offered a job at an innovative Swedish Firm branch Headquarters in Silicon Valley. However, after most leading IT companies swarmed into Silicon Valley in the early 21st century, getting an apartment there for fresh graduates was next to impossible. ¡°¡­Scattered Islands Online is reported to provide 95% reality with a time distortion of 8:1 hours (8 in game hours: 1 real life hours)...¡± Excited to fend for himself for the first time, Duke was looking forward to his new life. Having been born and raised in Pescadero, California, he never had the chance to experience the real world since his parents paid for his college tuition and living expenses at UPENN. Duke was offered a condo fully paid for by his company in Palo Alto for one year. The downside was that it was a 2 bedroom 2 full bath condo and he had to find a different place of residence within a year. Duke was informed a month earlier that he would have to share the condo with a roommate who will be a fellow coworker as well. Being the first one to move in, Duke had the choice of bedroom. Choosing the room with the window facing East Duke decided to get settled in. While wondering who his new roommate might be he decided to clean up the condo after unpacking his belongings. ¡°Scattered Islands Online happens to be one of few games that does not compromise player health by providing a maximum of 192 hours (8 days) in game experience that is 24 hours (1 day) in real life¡­.¡± ¡°According to Brandon Keys (CEO of SIO) being logged in over 24 hours means an automatic log off from the server. In addition, players are unable to use the capsule for 8 hours real time.¡± ¡°This 8 hour ban was put in place so that players do not get addicted to the game and compromise their wellbeing.¡± ¡°There have been many questions regarding this ban. One of the frequently asked questions being, Will this result in Quests being aborted or marked as failure if they are time sensitive? Furthermore, Will that impact the game play or the story line?¡± Duke eagerly looked over to the TV while organizing the kitchen so that he can hear what the reporters had to say next. ¡°Well according to Brandon Keys, only the Major Quests, Raid Quests, Boss Quests, Special Events and certain time sensitive Quests will continue following the In-game time. While the others will freeze for the duration of the 8 hour waiting period.¡± ¡°This means players can resume where they left off after the 8 hours with almost no impact to their game play. Although this may seem like a same relief to the otherwise major inconvenience in regards to the Quests and Events unaffected. SIO has remedied this by stating players can in fact broaden their game time by taking frequent breaks.¡± Moving on to the refrigerator, Duke decided to put anyway some of the food and beverages he brought with him. ¡°To clarify, every time players take a 30 minute break after 4 hours of playing (Max 2 breaks in a given day), 10 hours in game time is added to their 192 hour counter for a maximum of 212 hours. This is equivalent to 26.5 hours in real time. Stolen story; please report. ¡°Although it doesn¡¯t seem like significant, you are indeed getting 20 hours in game. That¡¯s almost a whole day inside the game.¡± ¡°Brandon Keys also said their Quests and Events unaffected by the 8 hour ban will have down time in between objectives that account for the some of the 8 hours so that most players will not be affected by the ban so long as they are being time efficient.¡± ¡°Oddly enough SIO is being really specific about how long users can play because of their commitment to user health.¡± Finally done settling in, Duke decided to relax on the couch for a bit while wondering if he should order in food or go out to eat while exploring the new city he will be living in from now on. While Duke was relaxing on the couch, he heard the door knob turning. Getting up to check who was at the door he saw an olive skinned, green eyed young adult entering the condo. ¡°Hi, umm, who are you? My name is Duke St.Cloud. Are you my roommate?¡± asked Duke. ¡°Hey, I am Charles Ivan. I will be living here from now on.¡± Said Charles while moving his luggage inside the condo. After helping Charles bring his stuff into the condo from his car. ¡°Sorry Charles but I went ahead and picked the room with the window facing east since no one was here.¡± ¡°Ahaha, no worries all I need is a room with a comfy bed and I will be good.¡± While helping Charles organize his stuff, the two roommates found out a few interesting things about each other. Such as, Charles Ivan has a Master¡¯s Degree in Business Finance from UC of Berkeley. In addition, he loves jogging, playing racquetball, the cello and piano. Whereas, Duke is a fan of jogging, martial arts, reading books and listening to music. On top of their mutual interest for an active lifestyle they love playing virtual video games. ¡°There are 5 confirmed races: Human, Elf, Barbarian, Undead, Dwarf and Halfling, that all players have to choose from in the beginning. Whether or not if more races are playable later on is unconfirmed as of now.¡± ¡°Oh, is this news regarding SIO?¡± said Charles. ¡°Yeah, why do you play VRMMORPGs?¡± questioned Duke secretly hoping his new roommate was a gamer. ¡°Of course, I have been a gamer for as long as I can remember, ahaha.¡± ¡°Have you bought the pod then?¡± asked Duke relieved. ¡°Yes I have. It will be here within 2 days when the first shipment arrives!¡± said Charles smugly. ¡°Really? Same here. I have been dying to play this game since it was first announced a year ago. I saved up and bought the first gen pod when it was released as well.¡± said the overexcited Duke. ¡°¡­ The reason why this game only has 5 races unlike most VRMMORG games these days with their countless race system is because this game heavily focuses on abilites rather than race.¡± ¡°Player freedom in classes is highly valued, meaning regardless of race and racial traits, a dwarf can overpower elves in magic just as easily as an undead being a better craftsman than a dwarf.¡± ¡°While SIO does not have diversity in races, the diversity in classes is immeasurable and wholly unrestricted.¡± ¡°Wow, isn¡¯t that incredible Duke? We can play however we want without any significant impacts as long as we work hard to strengthen our characters however we please.¡± ¡°Yeah that sure is nice, but rather than the game I am more worried about grabbing some food soon. I am famished.¡± ¡°Same here, wanna go out and grab something to eat while exploring this city?¡± asked Charles. ¡°Yeah I am down for that. We will be living here from now on, so might as well get accustomed to it.¡± Said Duke eagerly. Chapter 1: Exploring Palo Alto Chapter 1: Exploring Palo Alto
After looking up points of interest in Palo Alto on their phones, Duke found an excellent place called Town and Country Village. Apparently it was kind of like an open neighborhood mall with a wonderful refreshing atmosphere. It has many excellent bakeries and restaurants with high end retail stores according to the reviews. Duke and Charles left their condo and decided to drive Charles¡¯s car there. 15 minutes later, Charles pulled into a parking space outside the mall. During the drive Charles and Duke learned about a lot about each other, such as Duke just broke up with his 2 year girlfriend from UPENN a month before graduation. It was a mutual break up with no drama to it. The primary reason was after graduation Duke moving to the west coast for work whereas Amy was moving to the east coast. Charles is currently in a relationship with Josh Parker. Josh is a Marine Biologist; he graduated from UC of Berkeley as well. Apparently he is currently on a research expedition with several biologists, geneticists, and other researchers in Hawaii. ¡°How did you and Josh meet? You guys are in completely different fields.¡± ¡°Well we were in same gen classes back in freshman year. He and I sat at the same row in Chem II. After some light chatting we found out we were in 2 other classes together.¡± ¡°How long have you guys been together then?¡± ¡°We started dating fall semester of junior year, so almost 4 years now.¡± Walking towards the Mall Map and Directory. Duke got busy looking for a good restaurant to eat at. Craving some Pizza, they started walking towards Howie¡¯s Artisan Pizza. ¡°Is Josh also staying in California whenever he is isn¡¯t on a boat in the middle of the ocean?¡± ¡°Yeah he is. You probably won¡¯t be seeing him anytime soon though. This expedition of his is about 3 months long.¡± ¡°Oh is that so? Well in the mean time you can act as my wingman whenever we go to bars. It will be a major help!¡± ¡°Hahaha, don¡¯t worry, I got your back. I know how to impress the ladies¡± said Charles smirking. Walking into Howie¡¯s Artisan Pizza, Charles and Duke were led to an open spot by the window. Looking over the menu Duke homed in on Hummus and Tahini. ¡°Hummus and Tahini! I am definitely getting that. It sounds so delicious!¡± ¡°Do you want to split the pizza? We can get the Thai Styled Chicken Wings and The Works.¡± ¡°Yeah let¡¯s do that. They all sound real good right now.¡± Turning towards the waitress Duke said while handing her his ID, ¡°Can we get the Thai Styled Chicken Wings, The works, and the Hummus and Tahini, ohh and a Speakeasy Prohibition Ale.¡± ¡°Add the Lost Coast Great White for me as well.¡± Added Charles fishing out his ID. ¡°Okay, we can get that for you. Do you want your beer now or when the food arrives?¡± Asked the teenaged waitress. ¡°Umm, later is fine. Can we get some water now though?¡± said Duke ¡°Yes we can do that. It will be about 25 minutes for your food.¡± Said the Waitress while walking away. While waiting on their food to arrive, Duke and Charles got to know each other. Duke¡¯s parents are in Pescadero. He comes from a family of 4 with an older brother. His brother Faze is 26 years old and married to Iris, she is 25. His brother and sister in law live in Daly City. They didn¡¯t want to move out of state since they are planning on having child soon, and they don¡¯t want their parents to be too far. Duke decided to go into Chemical Engineering because he wanted to work for Runway in Paris when he was deciding his Major. Although he was mainly joking about working for some fashion company engineering their colognes and perfumes, he thought this way he would be in constant contact with hot models. Charles surprisingly thought that was an ingenious plan. However, Duke actually likes Chemical Engineering for its diversity and he is passionate about biotech. This is the reason why he came to work for Celest; the company they officially start working for in August. Charles was also born and raised in California but his hometown is Mailbu. Charles revealed his sexuality to his parents and friends when he was 15. Luckily, he never had any problems at home because his parents are open minded and downright chill. His friends were just as open minded so he never had any problems at school and wasn¡¯t mistreated. Apparently his dad let him taste his first beer when he was 16 and he started to drink frequently with his parents by 18. His parents reasoned that if he is exposed to it now, by the time he is in college the glamour of drinking and untethered freedom will have died down. This was a smart idea since by the time he was a freshman Charles had matured mentally. He was extremely responsible when he and his friends were partying. Charles went into Finance because his parents own businesses and he used to supervise some of them during Summer Break for extra pocket money. The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Soon the food arrived, and Duke started to devour everything in sight. ¡°Wow that was damn good food! I am stuffed and need to take a nap.¡± Said Duke stretching as he paid his share of the bill and leaving a 20% tip. ¡°Well we still have to check this mall out. Might as well burn some calories.¡± About an hour and half later Charles and Duke started to drive back to their condo. By the time they got back it was 8:18 pm. Once home Duke helped Charles organize his stuff while figuring out if they were missing anything. After settling in Charles made note of essentials they needed to buy tomorrow including: toiletries, kitchen utensils, and groceries. ¡°We need to do some shopping tomorrow morning. We need quite a few things, we will run out of supplies within 2 days.¡± Said Charles while inspecting the fridge. ¡°Yeah let¡¯s go to get everything we need tomorrow morning. While we are at it we might as well check out Celest Campus.¡± ¡°Sounds like a plan. Hey, fire up your laptop and check the Company email. If we have any paper work, or something we need to take care of we might as well be done with it tomorrow.¡± ¡°Lemme check.¡± Checking the company emails, Duke made note of everything they had to take care of before they went into work in August. ¡°Alright, there is Newcomer orientation it includes a campus tour. Some paper work regarding bank deposits, contracts, and checking in with our department.¡± Answered Duke. ¡°Not too bad, we can finish all that in a couple hours.¡± ¡°Yep, for now we might as well complete all the paperwork, so all we have to do is turn it in tomorrow.¡± Said Duke while printing the documents. After a tedious 30 minutes or so Charles and Duke were done with their paper work. To relax they decided to watch a movie. ¡°We might as make this movie into a drinking game. We got beer and liquor in the fridge.¡± said Duke. ¡°Hahaha, official move in party! Lemme set up my hookah while you go grab the drinks and turn on a movie.¡± Answered Charles. Soon the party really got going with Alcohol, Hookah and a movie marathon late into the night. Sorry guys and gals. ahaha (awkward)... Chapter 2 Chapter 2: Campus Tour -May 11th 2106 The next morning Duke was roused awake by his cellphone alarm indicating it was 7:30 am. Exhausted from lack of sleep the previous night, Duke had to forcibly drag himself out of bed and into the bathroom. 30 minutes later refreshed and awake Duke strolled into the kitchen for a light breakfast. While eating, he checked his emails, and read some daily news. Walking out of his room Charles approached the dinner table. Duke noticed Charles was dressed in sportswear. Thinking about where he was going, Duke asked ¡°Are you going somewhere this early?¡± Charles replied, ¡°About to go for a quick run,¡± while grabbing his warm toast. ¡°Oh wait for me, I need to stretch my legs as well.¡± Cramming food down his throat he rushed into his room to change. They discussed when they planned on doing their shopping before heading off to their Campus tour at 2 pm. ¡°Yeah let¡¯s go to a local grocer around 11, then grab a quick lunch before heading off around 12 pm¡± confirmed Charles. After finishing their 3 mile run around the block quickly, Duke practiced some Martial Arts he picked up recently for about an hour. While Duke was practicing martial arts, Charles was reading a novel he was currently engrossed in. By 11 am, Duke and Charles were dressed and ready to head out. Using Duke¡¯s car this time around they drove to a neighborhood market about 5 minutes away. Once there Duke and Charles split up to cover more ground. Checking out 35 minutes later, Duke said ¡°We have about 40 minutes for a quick lunch. Where should we go?¡± ¡°Hmm, let¡¯s just go to a fast food place nearby.¡± ¡°There is a Subway nearby.¡± ¡°That works, let¡¯s go.¡± After spending about 25 minutes inside Subway it was time to leave for their orientation. Driving into Silicon Valley took about 45 minutes, so by the time they pulled into a parking space in the employee parking lot it was past 1:50 pm. ¡°Made it just in time,¡± said Charles relieved. ¡°Now we just need to figure out where we need to check in. This place is like a shopping complex,¡± replied Duke frustrated. Walking towards the main building Duke was checking out his surroundings. Manicured lawns, gardens with flower beds decorating the landscaping, cobbled walk ways through the gardens, and lawn chairs. It looked more like a park meant for couples rather than a company campus. Heck people were even riding bicycles, motorized scooters and longboards arounds. Duke had seen pictures about the campus, but seeing it personally was truly breathtaking. ¡°I have finally made it here¡± said duke. ¡°It truly looks like a fun work environment doesn¡¯t it?¡± replied Charles. ¡°Have you been here before?¡± ¡°I have actually. I actually know someone that works here¡± ¡°Seriously?¡± ¡°Yep! How do you think I got this job? I have a referral¡± smirked Charles ¡°Damn, lucky! Walking through the front doors, Charles spotted a receptionist. ¡°Hello my name is Charles and this is Duke. We are here for job orientation. Do you know where we go?¡± ¡°What department will you be working for?¡± asked the receptionist. ¡°I am in the finance department while he is in the engineering department.¡± Waiting for a few seconds as the receptionist typed on her computer, Duke was observing his surroundings. ¡°What¡¯s up?¡± asked Charles ¡°Nothing much I was just observing the people and the d¨¦cor¡± replied Duke. ¡°Not what I expected from an IT company. By that I meant not¡­¡± ¡°Okay it looks like Charles has to go to the Business Center and Duke has to go to the Engineering Center. Someone will meet you by the main entrance to guide you on your tour.¡± ¡°Thank you for your time¡± said Duke ¡°Well we know where we have to go based on this map. Engineering Center is only 2 minutes north from here and the Business Center is about a minute west from here.¡± After separating Duke walked into Building # 2 imagining what it would be like to work for one of the world¡¯s leading technological companies in biotech. ¡°Hello my name is Duke. I am here for a tour¡± said Duke while approaching the receptionist. ¡°Okay, I informed someone to come here. They will be here in a minute. Hang tight until then¡± About a minute later, a gentleman in his forties appeared and introduced himself ¡°Hello, you must be Duke. My name is Peter and I am in charge of your tour today.¡± ¡°Nice to meet you Peter¡± ¡°If you will follow me I will show you around.¡± Replied Peter as he turned and walked away. ¡°The first floor is more for social interaction. We have a cafeteria, lounges, game rooms and even a library to suit people¡¯s needs. People normal relax on this floor, other than that there isn¡¯t much that happens here work related at least.¡± Walk down the hall, Peter pointed out the various game rooms, and lounges. There were even dart boards and Billiard tables. All kinds of people could be seen relaxing and having fun. ¡°The second floor is more focused on the Computer Science than anything else. All the floor are divided based on the field in question. Therefore, the third floor is focused on mechanical engineering, the fourth floor on¡­¡± Going up an elevator, Peter crammed as much information as possible so that they can move to different sections of the campus without wasting too much time. Duke will be working in the fifth floor primarily. Some 40 minutes later Duke learned everything related to his responsibilities and where everything was to best of his ability. Walking out of the building and towards building # 3 Peter said, ¡°You won¡¯t have much interaction with this part of the campus, but might as well show you where everything is¡± ¡°Sounds good to me. So how many sectors are there?¡± ¡°There are 7 sectors on this campus and more overseas.¡± ¡°That sounds a pain. Having to travel all over the place¡± complained Duke. ¡°Hah! That¡¯s why you see people with bikes, and boards. Not many like walking all over the place.¡± Agreed Peter. Around 5 pm their tour ended and they were ready to go home. Driving home Duke said, ¡°I am thinking about buying a longboard. I don¡¯t feel like walking all the over the place.¡± ¡°That¡¯s smart. I already have one so I don¡¯t need to worry about one.¡± Finally home Duke collapsed on the couch. ¡°Ah this feels good. Today exhausted me.¡± ¡°I just want to take a nap.¡± Replied Charles. Waking up from a 30 minute nap. Duke decided to eat some dinner. While eating he was reading up on any new information regarding SIO and their release 6 days away. ¡°What are you doing?¡± asked Charles walking out of his room. ¡°Seeing if there was any new update regarding SIO.¡± ¡°So is there any new information.¡± ¡°Nope, oh I almost forgot our pods will be here tomorrow morning around 10 am.¡± ¡°Sweet! I am pretty excited about using the pod even if the game doesn¡¯t actually work for another week¡± said Charles excitedly. ¡°Wait a second there is information regarding the pod that was released just now.¡± ¡°What does it say?¡± ¡°Looks like the pod has more uses than just playing a game. Apparently once you are immersed you enter your personal room. That room has the time distortion similar to SIO in addition you can customize it however you wish. Also, just like SIO there is restriction on how long you can be inside.¡± ¡°Wait does that mean you can do whatever you want in there? Like can we do our work in there?¡± ¡°Holy Shit! Exactly you can literally take your work in real life inside there.¡± ¡°I wonder how many people will take advantage of it. If I had this pod while I was in college, homework would have a breeze. Also all those last minute cramming before an exam.¡± ¡°I know right? Damn, the demand for these pods are going to skyrocket.¡± ¡°Is there anything else?¡± asked Charles ¡°Let¡¯s see¡­ wait there is more. You can actually link your personal space with others as well! You can hang out with others as long as you have their permission, and you can do whatever you want. Legal of course.¡± ¡°That sounds convenient if you have like a group project or a study group. Heck you can even have conference meetings in there.¡± ¡°I wonder if our company with take advantage of this and buy a bunch of pods. That way people don¡¯t to run around so much¡± questioned Duke. ¡°Knowing them I am sure they will.¡± ¡°Man SIO really thought this through. They have some innovative ideas. No one has thought about linking up personal space with others.¡± ¡°I wonder what sex feels like inside there¡± smirked Charles ¡°¡­¡± Chapter 3- Arrival -May 12th 2106 Waking up around 9 am Duke went into the bathroom to change quickly for his morning run. Wolfing down his breakfast Duke was getting ready to leave when Charles walked in. "Oh, are you done with your run?" "Yeah, I finished just now" replied Charles panting. "I should be done within thirty minutes, if the pods arrive earlier give me a call" answered Duke while putting his shoes on. Walking out of the house Duke was distracted because of the pods. He thought the pods were experimental, but well thought out. The pods incorporated ideas people haven''t put into practice yet. As a result, there was no data indicating if these add ons will be effective in attracting new customers or even work at all. After thirty minutes Duke entered the bathroom for a quick shower and change his sweaty clothes. Instead of pacing around impatiently he decided tosit down on the couch and confirm the delivery status on his laptop. Seeing the ETA at fourty-five minutes Duke pulled out a measuring tape to find a good place for the pod without it being in the way. After ten minutes or so he decided to have the pod placed in his room for convinence sake without cluttering the living room. First, he had to rearrange his room to make room for the pod. By the time he finished reorganzing his room the doorbell rang. "Hello, we are from New Age Gaming (NAG) with a delivery of two pods for this address. Are Duke St. Cloud and Charles Ivan here?" Charles came running towards the door excitedly, "Yes that''s us." Bringing the pods inside the delivery man said, "Where do you want this pods to be set up?" "I would like mine to be set up inside my room. It''s this way please" replied Duke leading the way. "I also want mine in my bed room" seconded Charles. Leaving the techicians to their job of setting up the pods, Duke and Charles decided to read the instructions manual. About an hour later, one of the technicians said, "Alright the pods are up and running. Just give them about 30 minutes for them to update and configure. After that you can use your personal space within the pod until the game launches." Dying to try out the pods Charles decided to have some food before entering VR. Duke escorted the technicians out of the condo while anxiously waiting for the update. Some time later Duke and Charles decided to test their pods. Scanning... identifying user... Scrolling through the terms Duke learned about the laws surrounding the pod and NAG''s future games; including SIO. His vision blurred, then the landscape he was standing on changed into a raised circular platform with a simple polished marble altar standing before him. On top of the altar was a levitating fairy enshrouded in some type of fog. Soon a screen popped up in front of Duke. In front of you stands your Support AI, please use the screen in front of you in order to customize your AI. On the screen were a bunch of lists indicating physical features and accessories that were customizable. Starting off with the hair, Duke took his time making changes. As he customized further he noticed the mist dissipating wherever the changes were made on the fairy standing in front of him. After spending thirty minutes on extensive changeshis end result was a purple/violet haired, violet eyed fairy with a neon green robe with dark purple trims. Other than this she looked like a typical adorable fairy. The only thing left to do was namingthe fairy. "Let''s see... for the name let''s go with Lichen Hailwasp," said Duke after much thought. He got this name from pressing random a few times using the fairy name generator that was included in the set of tools on thefairy customization screen. Soon a ball of light covered the fairy in front of Duke as it slowly expanded before implodingon itself. In front of him stood a purple haired fairy staring right back at him, as if examining him. "Hello! I am Lichen, I will be your guide and house keeper from now on." said the fairy excitedly while flying around him. "Hey I am Duke, nice to meet you. So, what is it that you can do? Also what do you mean by house keeper?" "I help users such as you familiarize yourself with VR and all its features. Besides setting up and maintaining your virtual home, I also have access to the internet as such I can help keep you updated on current events and provide neccessary information that you may be lacking while in game or in your VR home. Depending on user''s permission I can also have access to your cellphone, emails and other personal information to help keep you updated while using the pod." stated the fairy. "That''s certainlyconvenient" exclaimed Duke. "Do you want to go ahead and set up your house now?" "Sure let''s do this." "First things first, all new users start with a basic two-hundred sqft room. This room can be upgraded later using real world currency or using in game currency. RememberNAGis an American based company as such currency conversion rates used in real world apply when making virtual purchases.
